travel guide to krabi

Krabi Starts Here

It comes as a surprise to some people, but not all places in this Krabi travel guide are beaches. Some of the best ones, in fact, are nowhere near the sea—well, not really. (Although I’ll be honest: The question of how many days in Railay Beach you need will figure heavily into what I’m about to say.)

Which is not to say Krabi’s beaches aren’t amazing. Generally speaking, I find them to be the best of any “mainstream” destination in Southern Thailand, and certainly better than Phuket ‘s.

It’s just that Krabi is so much more than a beautiful beach. Let’s start the discussion of where to go in Krabi on this premise, whether that sees you spend 1 week in Krabi, or simply sketching out an Ao Nang itinerary.

Where to Stay in Krabi

Before I dig deeper into this Krabi travel guide, allow me to recommend a couple of hotels. If you’re on the higher end of travelers, you won’t want to miss Railay Beach’s Rayavadee , which some people consider to be the best hotel in all of Thailand. A more reasonably priced property, meanwhile is Sunrise Tropical Resort , which is also in Railay but is more, shall we say, accessible.

Beyond the best beach hotels in Krabi, there are other places in this province to make your home. I’m not going to recommend any hotels in Koh Phi Phi or Ao Nang, for reasons I’ll explain in just a moment, but I am a fan of the cozy and comfortable Sasi House in Krabi town. This laid-back yet stylish hotel is built inside an old Thai house, and has a charming feel you won’t find at any place where waves lap nearby.

My Favorite Places to Visit in Krabi

Railay beach.

travel guide to krabi

When it comes to the best beach in Krabi (at least those that are easily accessible), Railay Beach takes the cake, no question. As far as actual swimming is concerned, Railay West is where you’ll want to head, while many of my favorite hotels and restaurants are located at Railay East . I also like to include Phra Nang Cave Beach , the Railay Viewpoint and Tonsai Beach , where you can see bioluminescent plankton, within the topic of Railay. When it comes to the question of “how many days in Railay Beach,” my answer is usually “as many as you can possibly spend”!

travel guide to krabi

Among places to visit in Krabi that require a bit more effort, meanwhile, I think that Koh Poda is probably the best beach you’ll find in the province. This is usually visited on a day trip from Railay, during which you visit several other islands (like Koh Gai , or “Chicken Island”), and which also gives you the opportunity to do some snorkeling. TIP: Book a private tour so you can visit Koh Poda early, before the crowds arrive.

Koh Phi Phi

travel guide to krabi

Ferries leave from Railay to Koh Phi Phi often enough that you don’t need to think too much about the time you devote to the Phi Phi Islands, which is for the better. To be sure, while the beautiful of Koh Phi Phi is hard to over-estimate, where at the Phi Phi Viewpoint or at iconic Maya Bay , it’s also difficult to underestimate how obnoxious the crowds can be, even if they’re likely to be lighter in the wake of coronavirus .

Wat Tham Suea Temple

travel guide to krabi

The first destination within this Krabi travel guide that doesn’t involve a beach is Wat Tham Suea , aka the Tiger Temple. Visiting this temple isn’t easy—after getting a taxi, you’ll need to climb up about 1,200 steps, which is a chore even if you’re fit, given how hot it’s likely to be. The view from the top, however, is just stunning, to say nothing of how the breeze hundreds of meters up will cool your sweaty body.

Sa Morakot (The Emerald Pool)

travel guide to krabi

When it comes to day trips from Krabi (assuming you stay in Railay), I like to combine several into one, if I can. To be sure, you can visit the Sa Morakot “Emerald Pool” using the same taxi you book to take you to the Tiger Temple. Additionally, you can add a third attraction—the so-called Hot Springs Waterfall —if you want, but beware. Although this place is cool, figuratively speaking, it is literally scalding!

The Truth About Ao Nang

The good news? Many of the cheap hotels in Krabi (at least the ones on the beach) are in Ao Nang, which is the closest thing to a “main” beach Krabi has. The bad news? Ao Nang’s accessibility (you don’t need to take a boat to get here, as you need to do with Railay) means that anyone and everyone goes here, which gives the area a crowded, claustrophobic feel that just isn’t very pleasant to me.

To be sure, while Ao Nang isn’t near the top of places to visit in Krabi as far as I’m concerned, it isn’t horrible. If you’ve already booked a refundable night (or three!) there by the time you read this, I wouldn’t recommend taking the loss. I just think that when you dive deeper into Krabi, both its beaches and some of its inland treasures, you will see what I mean about Ao Nang, and why it’s not a place I’m rushing to return.

Krabi vs. Phuket

The topic of the best islands in Thailand , more generally, is one I’ve left to another post. What I will say, when simple comparing Krabi and Phuket, is that it’s not really close for me. While Phuket island does have some merits, which include both charming places inland and great beaches, Krabi generally has scenery that is more iconic of Thailand, even if it isn’t as culturally interesting.

This takes into account the fact that some things to do in Krabi (such as excursions to Koh Phi Phi, the Koh Yao islands and James Bond Island) are also accessible from Phuket. Click here to visit Leave Your Daily Hell and read more about my thoughts comparing Phuket vs. Krabi , which I hope will give you insights to make your own decision to this end.

Other FAQ About Travel to Krabi

How many days do you need in krabi.

Krabi province is huge, so I recommend spending at least 3-5 days here. This will afford you a night or two either in Railay or Ao Nang (including the potential for a 4-island day trip), two nights in Koh Phi Phi and at least a full day exploring the attractions of inland Krabi province.

What part of Krabi is best to stay?

Personally, I find that Railay Beach is the “sweet spot” of Krabi. Although it’s not an island, it is only accessible via a (short) boat trip from the mainland, which gives it a castaway feel and a less busy atmosphere than Ao Nang. The scenery is gorgeous, featuring towering limestone karsts and calm, clear waters; islands deeper in the Andaman are either a day trip (Koh Poda, Koh Gai) or a weekend excursion (Phi Phi) away.

How much is the 4 island tour in Krabi?

Depending on how many people you have, whether you choose a private tour and your preference (speed boat or longtail), the 4-island day trip from Krabi starts from 500 Baht per person. As of January 2023, you can hire a private long-tail and driver for a half day for around 3,000 Baht. However, if you’re a solo travel or on a budget, you might want to join a group tour. In either case, any travel agent on the main street between Railay West beach can hook you up, presuming you aren’t afraid to haggle.

The Bottom Line

Should you visit Koh Phi Phi or Railay Beach? The breadth and depth this Krabi travel guide embodies precisely why this is one of my favorite Thailand destinations , even if it is a rather “mainstream” one. There’s simply very few sights in the Kingdom as iconic as the towering limestone karsts of Railay Bay, let alone with dozens of long-tail boats splayed out beneath them. I hope you’ll follow in my footsteps to this paradisiacal part of Thailand. And I hope, if you aren’t able to mold the advice I’ve laid out about Krabi vacations here into an itinerary, you’ll consider hiring me to create one for you .

Krabi is a province in southern Thailand hosting all the usual gems you’d expect.

From the beautiful beaches, pristine water, coral reefs, waterfalls, and epic caves to get lost in.

Krabi is a dramatic combination of landscapes. From a mountainous mainland surrounded by the drop-dead gorgeous Andaman Sea . It’s a 130-island-strong archipelago. Go rock climbing in the morning and relax on the sand afterward.

Krabi’s beaches are more beautiful than Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in the region of Surat Thani. And it’s way less touristy than the more famous Phuket . Railay Beach and Ao Nang Beach are famous!

If you’ve been losing your mind in Bangkok, head down south to Krabi for your dose of rejuvenating time and exploration.

It has some of the busiest party islands like Koh Phi Phi, but also some off-the-beaten-track places.

For those looking for something a little more chill, it’s a perfect place for relaxation and recreation.

There’s a little bit of everything here – from water sports to buzzing nightlife. On land, you can find tropical temples and Buddhist caves, and a wealth of delicious cuisines to tuck into.

From the hot springs of Thung Teao Forest Natural Park to the rock climbing cliffs of Railay Beach, to the white sand of Phra Nang Beach, there is no shortage of adventure opportunities.

After adventuring in nature, get a Thai massage, taste local cuisine at a night market, or hang out in Ao Nang or Krabi Town.

From the culture, to the nature, to the most welcoming of locals, it’s obvious why Krabi’s at the top of travellers’ must-visit destinations in Thailand .

Krabi White Sand Beaches

Krabi is one of the most relaxing places ever and once you get there you’ll see exactly why. It can’t help it, being home to 130 beautiful islands.

One of the most epic things about Krabi is that many of its isolated beaches are accessible only by boat!

Hop on a famous colourful long tail boat to reach some of Thailand’s most secluded paradise islands and beaches on an island tour.

The most famous tour is called the Four Island Tour which takes you along the Krabi coastline to Railay Beach, Tub Island, Chicken Island, and Poda Island. Some tours also stop at Phra Nang Beach which has caves and cliffs.

You can book the island tour through many agencies, and they usually include pick up from your accommodation in Ao Nang or Krabi town.

The island tour is a full-day adventure, usually running from about 8am to 4pm. Tours range in price from 600-800 baht, depending on the quality of the vessel and buffet and the National Park fee usually isn’t included (400/200 baht per adult/child).

You never know the quality you’re going to get from these agencies though. If you want a guaranteed good experience, book online through the Klook website .

BONUS –  Booking ahead of time ensures you won’t miss out on the tour, and get the best price too! And just for NOMADasaurus readers, if you use the Klook discount code  “NOMADS10”  on the website when checking out, you’ll get $10 off your first booking!

Koh Phi Phi probably rings a bell! It was made famous by Leonardo’s stunning performance in the movie ‘The Beach’, so it’s one of Thailand’s most famous spots.

It’s actually a small archipelago of six islands though, not just one! And no list of the top Krabi attractions would be complete without mentioning it.

Koh Phi Phi Leh is the second largest island and is home to just one beach – Maya Bay. This is the famed stretch of white sand that Leo hung out at!

Unfortunately, the beach closed indefinitely to tourists following environmental damages.

It’s the main reason people used to visit the island – but it’s also home to the Viking Cave.

The cave has some cool ancient paintings of Scandanavian drakkars , although no one knows exactly how ancient they are.

The caves are now used to demonstrate how to collect swift’s nests. It’s all very eclectic. If you fancy checking it out, it’s up in the northeast of the island.

You can get there in half an hour on long-tail boat from Tonsai Bay which is the main pier for the islands.

If you want to make friends, get yourself to Koh Phi Phi Don. It’s the only island in the little archipelago that people live on.

It’s pretty mainstream now with many bars and clubs – let’s just say there’s plenty to do and many people to make friends with here!

Tonsai Village is the liveliest part which you can head to for a party! There’s enough going on here to keep the biggest of party animals amused.

Long Beach is nearby, but a little more tranquil. If you want super laid back, then Phi Phi East coast is where you should head.

You can get to Koh Phi Phi by ferry or speedboat. The ferry takes about two hours from Phuket (Rassada Pier) and an hour and a half from Krabi (Klong Jirad Pier) or Koh Lanta.

Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint

For a more laid back island getaway, head to Koh Lanta. It seems to attract a lot of backpackers, peace seekers, and solo travellers – and for good reason!

It’s a lot bigger than Koh Phi Phi, so it has many more beaches and inland areas to explore. It’s got waterfalls and a national park and something like 30km of sunbathing-worthy sand to hit up.

It’s pretty hippy – comparable to Indonesia’s Gili Air vs. Gili Trawangan kind of thing.

Koh Lanta has managed to avoid too much overdevelopment similar to the likes of Koh Samui, which makes it one of our top recommendations for places to visit in Krabi.

There are at least fewer of the skyrise mega-hotels and ugly condos, rather it’s peppered with traditional bungalows.

Koh Lanta is actually one of our favourite places in Thailand to rent a bungalow and kick back for a week at a time! Don’t miss it!

But it’s still got plenty of places to wine and dine yourself. Fear not – Koh Lanta has lots of fun bars, restaurants, and spots to get souvenirs.

Hippie bars and picturesque sunsets are not in short stock here. Charm and convenience – Koh Lanta’s got the lot.

The island is 27km long, so it’s a good spot to rent a moped so you can whiz around and explore all the secluded beaches with some independence.

Long Beach is the longest beach on the island (it really does what it says on the tin)!

It’s beautiful and next to all the action, where some of the coolest restaurants are.

Head south, and you’ll hit Beautiful Beach and Relax Bay. Two awesome spots to do some serious chilling!

Check out Sala Dan and Lanta Old Town for some local culture. There are many teakwood shophouses towering over the water on stilts which have many lovely little cafes and shops.

You could spend weeks here without realising it’s been more than a few days!

Koh Lanta Beaches

Krabi is peppered with white sand beaches of the softest purest sand you’ll find in Asia – and even the world!

If you want a base for beach-related adventures, Ao Nang is a place to start .

Ao Nang is one of the most popular places to go when you visit Krabi. It’s busy and touristy but it’s a start and it turns out lots of people love that vibe anyway! Ao Nang Beach itself is a popular spot in Krabi as well.

There are a ton of bars and restaurants and you can sign up for many tours and dive trips from Ao Nang.

Minutes away you can find Nopparat Thara beach and Railay Beach. You can only reach Krabi’s gorgeous renowned Railay Beach by boat from Ao Nang Beach. Boats go every hour and only take 15 minutes.

Railay Beach has lovely serene neighbourhoods and glorious warm water. The jungle lined beaches attract all sorts of monkeys and rock climbers!

Phra Nang Beach is super remote with more famous limestone cliffs and caves. You can only reach Phra Nang Beach by long tail boat from Ao Nang.

Snorkel to discover some of Thailand’s epic marine life or go scuba diving from one of the dive centres here. If you’re into water sports, rent a kayak for some picturesque activities!

Koh Hong is another secluded beach reachable by boat from Ao Nang. The beautiful Koh Hong is part of Than Bok Khorani national park and is surrounded by forest.

If you’re up for something more resort-y, head to Klong Muang.

No matter what beach vibe you’re in the market for – there are a few to explore in the vicinity.

Krabi Snorkelling

Whatever islands and beaches you go to, be sure to take a dip in the glorious Andaman Sea. Rent a snorkel and fins or try scuba diving in Thailand – it’s famous for being one of the top things to do in Krabi for a reason!

The water is warm and it’s as blue as can be. You could see some inspiring marine life too!

If you want to try your hand at scuba diving – you’re in for a treat. Ao Nang Islands is one of the best places to give it a go. It’s one of Krabi’s most famous dive areas with awesome things to see.

It’s great for beginners as well as advanced divers. In Koh Yawabon there’s even an awesome cave system that experienced divers can explore.

You can go with a bunch of different dive shops. The price for two dives is usually between 2700-3200 baht.

Ao Nang Islands isn’t the only place you should go and blow bubbles at though! Krabi is home to many awesome dive sites.

From Koh Lanta, you can get to Koh Haa Yai which has an epic underwater cave system.

There’s one called The Cathedral which is 20 meters deep and a thrill to swim through. This isn’t for the faint-hearted though – beginners beware.

In the My Koh Lanta Marine Park, you can go to Hin Daeng (AKA Red Rock) which is your best bet of getting to fly around with majestic manta rays! There’s nothing more epic than seeing a manta for the first time. They’re unbelievably huge and so graceful – it’s a humbling experience.

If you want to swim with the friendliest sharks in the ocean, get in the water in Krabi. It’s home to Leopard, Bamboo, and Blacktip reef sharks.

From Koh Phi Phi you can hop on a dive trip to Shark Point which is a must visit! There’s also The King Cruise site which has a shallow wreck which means even beginners can go.

For the more adventurous out there, hop on a liveaboard dive trip to the Similan Islands !

There are four-day tours starting from Khao Lak – followed by epic diving in the most remote sites in Thailand. Cruises can be a little pricier, from nearer 11,000 baht, and they run from November to May.

Around Krabi, you could see schooling barracuda and big grouper fish. And of course, the usual colourful fish that frequent reefs, and maybe even lobster!

If you’re big into scuba diving and a bit of a macro geek – you can also find nudibranchs, seahorses, shrimp and even ghost pipefish around these waters. Get in there!

For more great diving opportunities in Thailand be sure to check out diving in Koh Tao !

The natural beauty of Krabi is truly one of its most attractive features. The jagged soaring limestone islands stand dramatically out of the picture-perfect blue ocean. All lined with glorious white sand beaches.

There are sheer limestone cliffs and dramatic waterfalls. Krabi has a slice of nature for everyone to get their teeth into!

Climbers from all over the world are attracted to the quintessential geological features of Krabi’s limestone peaks. The area has some of the world’s top rock climbing.

The karsts are challenging and many people agree it’s worth the trip to test yourself on Krabi’s rock climbing spots!

Millennia of chemical erosion led to these idyllic islands – hop on a cruise to Koh Poda to see some secret spots.

Railay Beach is one of the best spots to go rock climbing in the world. From the beaches there are rock climbing routes for all experience levels.

Routes in other locations can be accessed via a walk through the jungle or by abseiling over the sea. Not a bad way to start a day of rock climbing.

You can find instructors, equipment rental and guides all over the area as rock climbing is very popular – there are plenty of adventure agencies where you can sign up .

Rock Climbing Walls Krabi

You can mountain bike to Huay Toh Waterfall and explore Thailand by horseback.

Hire a fishing boat to cruise around Krabi’s islands, explore the jungle, or take a tour of the mangrove swamps.

There are hundreds of reasons to get outdoors in Krabi.

Grab a mountain bike from Krabi Mountain Biking on Chaofa road down by the river.

You can cruise around to Huay Toh Waterfall, the Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool and Hot Springs as well as a bunch of other temples and caves.

On Koh Lanta you can ride horses from Khlong Nin Beach and explore the gorgeous landscapes of Krabi Thailand from a different vantage point to normal.

There are horses available for beginners as well as advanced riders and those who want to get their thrills from a faster ride!

If you fancy a spot of fishing, you’re in the right place. Deep-sea fishing in Krabi is renowned for a reason.

There’s Tuna, Mackerel, Giant Trevally, and Barracuda, to name a few! These trips are usually reserved for the hardcore and will require stamina and skill – some of the fish are pretty big old things.

Thailand is famous for its gorgeous jungles – and it’s definitely worth getting deep inside them and having a look around.

One awesome viewpoint is Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. You can hike up here on a pretty exciting trail. And the best thing about it, it’s free!

There’s a 4km trail up to a viewpoint worth climbing for. It’s absolutely epic and something to behold for the photographers out there! On the way, you pass picturesque scenes too so keep your eyes peeled, always.

Krabi Park Waterfall

Explore all terrains on ATVs, or quad bikes. You can pick up a rental which is about 2000 baht per hour in Ao Nang, and charge around to explore the best things to do in Krabi!

A lot of the roads you can cruise around are standard roads but you can go through plantations too.

If you want to go off the beaten track, you can take a tour through Nai Sa with a guide . This gets you a bit more off-road and gives you a more authentic experience of the Thai countryside which is pretty epic.

Before you go, always check the condition of the quaddies, as it’s not uncommon for them to be in poor condition if they’ve been driven to the ground by inexperienced drivers who wear down the gears and brakes.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. And helmets are for the win – just in case!

Kayaking in Krabi, especially along the serene Klong Root Water Canal, offers an enchanting experience where the natural beauty of Thailand truly comes alive.

Paddling through this tranquil waterway, kayakers are enveloped by lush, verdant jungle and towering limestone cliffs that epitomise Krabi’s unique landscape.

This journey through Klong Root is not just a physical activity, but a peaceful escape from the busyness of downtown Krabi, allowing one to connect deeply with the natural world.

Here, away from the bustle of tourist spots, you can witness the untouched beauty of Thailand, occasionally spotting wildlife like exotic birds or playful monkeys in their natural habitat.

It’s an immersive experience that blends adventure with tranquility, making it a must-do for any visitor to Krabi.

Krabi’s capital, inventively named Krabi Town, is quite beautiful in itself.

Krabi Town is a major hub for many travellers as it acts as a throughflow point to other islands and mainland beaches. But it’s worth a mosey around!

Krabi Town is a mish-mash of fresh and funky bars and restaurants. The retro markets have some of the best local curries you can find.

There are even some cultural attractions that shouldn’t be missed .

Best of all, it’s surrounded by seductive mangrove forests, swamps, and rivers. Plus impressive limestone cliffs and of course, the dreamy turquoise sea.

Krabi Town is much less tacky compared with nearby Ao Nang. Although its traveller/backpacker area has expanded so it has many cafes, hostels, and fancy hotels.

Gentrification has certainly occurred here but Krabi town has kept its lovely locals and lively town aura.

Get a Thai massage, browse the shops, try a cooking class, or just wander around and get lost.

Hit it up in April during Thai New Year for a cultural adventure you won’t forget! Songkran is a three-day festival that is unlike any other new year celebration in the world.

Gorgeous Krabi Views

Krabi Town has a fab lively night market from 5-10pm Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Head to Thanon Khon Dern AKA the Walking Street to check out over 50 stalls selling everything from street food to clothes, and just about any products you can imagine.

Wander around and appreciate the beauty of locally made pearl jewellery and other souvenirs.

It would be rude not to sample some of the local cuisines from street vendors while you’re at the market in Krabi Town.

You can get anything from grilled satay to barbecue fish and fried squid eggs.

There are many cakes and sweets AKA kanom in Thai which are definitely worth sampling through the night. The sticky rice and mango is to die for!

The prices here are cheaper than most markets in Krabi town. It’s still worth bargaining though, and a smile goes a long way when it comes to that!

Considering it’s such a small market, it brings in a pretty big, lively crowd which is a testament to its awesomeness. It’s a great way to get an insight into life in southern Thailand.

To get the most out of your night market visit, consider booking a guided tour .

You might think it’s a bit overkill, but having a local with you will allow you to get a way deeper understanding of how the markets work, and you can try some real local food that isn’t just pad thai and satay chicken.

If you fancy some tropical temples then check out the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi Town.

It’s a few minutes drive from the town centre – be prepared to climb though!

At the top of 1,247 steps, you’ll find an epic view and a golden Buddha nestled in a beautiful forest. It’ll take what breath you have left away.

It’s named Wat Tham Suea in Thai after the tiger paw prints which were once found in the temple.

The legend is that a tiger used to enter the cave while Abbot Luang Por Chamnean Srilasatheto was meditating, but the tiger did not harm him.

Don’t worry – it doesn’t seem like there are many tigers around there these days! The Tiger Cave Temple is now a famous meditation centre. Nuns and monks retreat here from all over Thailand.

You can get there via an arranged tour via an agent , or grab yourself a taxi or rent a moped and go on your own accord.

As seems to be the case in Thailand, there’s plenty of nightlife on offer in the Krabi Province! If you really want to party, there are DJs busting decks all night in Ao Nang Beach!

For the early evening, the Last Cafe has some delightful sandwiches and chilled beers.

Amy’s Bar has got the tunes, bevvies, and snacks to keep you going all night.

There’s also Ao Nang Centre Point – a huge three-story complex that has late-night dining, night markets and venues to keep you entertained late into the night.

Klong Thom Hot Springs are an hour from Krabi Town, and they’re some of the best hot springs in the area. Find some serenity under the canopy of the rainforest and soak until you shrivel.

It’s situated near the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve and the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park – and is home to Mother Nature’s self-made hot tubs, known to Thai locals as nam tok drawn.

The appealing hot water comes from thermal springs, heated by volcanic chambers deep underground. Thank you, world!

The Klong Thom hot springs are sort of bathtubs, naturally hollowed out in lovely smooth stone, and full to the brim with spring water at 35-42 degrees celsius. It’s almost perfect!

There’s even a cool river running not too far away, in case you fancy a refreshing cool down after the hot springs.

If you fancy something a bit less rustic, they’ve created some man-made pools because the site was becoming so popular. There are even changing facilities. Ideal!

To avoid crowds, hit it up before 10am or after 4pm. There’s Krabi Hot Springs and Saline Hot Spring which is smaller and more local. It’s only 90 baht to enter – so join in and bathe away.

The Famous Crab Sculptures In Krabi.

If you walk a kilometre from the Krabi Hot Springs you’ll get to the Insta-perfect Emerald Pool. The water is clear as crystal and totally worth heading there early for!

If you appreciate nature and like a little hike on some decent trails, you’ll be rewarded at the end with the stunning pool, which is a little hidden away in the jungle.

You can explore a whole network of trails through the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park to get to the pool. The longest trail is 1.2km with no climbing – so it’s fairly accessible to most.

On the journey, you’ll pass loads of streams, waterfalls, and mini pools. There are many gorgeous tropical trees and flora which will keep your eyes pleased for the whole walk, especially if you’re a nature lover.

Entrance to the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve and Emerald Pool is 200 baht. For both the hot springs and the pools, you can go on a guided tour , or rent mopeds and cruise around by yourself for some independent exploration.

Krabi Travel Guide

Now that you know all the great things to do in Krabi, here’s our guide to help you get here.

How to Get to Krabi Thailand

It may seem like a tropical paradise in the middle of nowhere, but it’s very easy to visit Krabi!

Flying into Krabi is as easy as pie. Krabi International Airport is 15 kilometres from the town centre. International and domestic flights operate daily from major cities.

Four countries fly directly to Krabi: Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Qatar (Doha) and many cities in China.

Within Thailand, you can fly from Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and of course, Bangkok. You can book flights from all locations easily online!

Bussing around Krabi couldn’t be easier. Hop on the bus from Bangkok at Borommaratchachonnani Road – it’ll cost you about 620-970 baht for the ten or so hour journey.

Other main places you can bus from in Thailand are Trang (129 baht), Phuket (155 baht) Hat Yai (234 baht).

You don’t usually need to book ahead unless it’s a Thai public holiday. You can choose to get air-conditioned, deluxe and luxury coaches depending on your budget.

There are also tourist buses which can pick you up from your hostel/hotel. It’s best to contact a local agency to arrange these.

You can visit Krabi all year round, but it’s best to head over when humidity is at its lowest to avoid sweating through too many of your t-shirts!

There are three seasons when it comes down to it.

Peak season is from October to March when it’s ‘hot’.

It’s hotter in the rainy low season from June to October .

The hottest time of year during their summer season is March to June .

During the low season, Krabi is perfect for backpackers! Accommodation can drop to a very affordable $5/night.

Although the price to pay is the chance of monsoon rains hitting hard for up to a week, and certainly no guarantee of sunbathing weather!

Humidity is high and temperatures usually hang around 25-30 degrees celsius. Many ferry routes are substantially less frequent but it’s cheap as chips.

In the high season, prices jump and accommodation gets booked up. Perfect temperatures, blue skies, and ideal water conditions attract tourists from every corner of the world.

So it’s best to plan as much as you can if you want to visit from October to March.

However, the kayak rental price on Pai Plong Beach is much higher than elsewhere (at least for non-hotel guests). So, if you plan to do a full day of kayaking, we recommend renting a kayak at Ao Nang or Railay Beach.

Find the Monkey Trail on AllTrails.

Note: Be careful when walking the Monkey Trail in Krabi, as the monkeys there, as in most places in Thailand, can be a bit aggressive if they suspect you carry any food or drinks, as they will want to steal it. And they often get agitated when irresponsible tourists taunt/provoke them.

17. Go Diving

While there are some great dive centers in Ao Nang, if you’re looking for better diving opportunities in Krabi province, we recommend going to Phi Phi Islands or Koh Lanta. There, you can learn to dive or go on plenty of fun dives if you’re certified, as the diving sites are much closer than to Ao Nang.

  • Check our Phi Phi Islands Travel Guide for more information.

We personally got our diving certificate in Koh Tao , which is one of the best places to get certified in Thailand.

18. Go on a sunset snorkeling cruise

The best boat tour in Krabi is the Krabi 5 Island Sunset Snorkeling Cruise . We absolutely loved that trip, as we went to some really cool snorkeling spots and enjoyed a really lovely time onboard the impressive boat.

Michael and the rest of the crew were great, and the super cool boat made the experience so much better. We could even jump in the water from the roof!

A great option for families/groups

Another great option for groups or families is to book the same exact boat but for the whole morning. It’s super spacious, and you get snorkeling gear, a paddle board, and a kayak, as well as a delicious gourmet breakfast (with champagne!).

  • Check the availability of the Private 4 Island Gourmet Breakfast Cruise .

19. Enjoy a private boat trip

For the ultimate experience in Krabi, we recommend booking a private boat trip, as it allows you to explore the nearby islands in a more relaxed and intimate fashion.

And if you’re traveling as a group, booking a private boat might turn out to be just a little more expensive than booking a shared day trip together.

There are many private boat options you can book in Krabi, and you can customize them to fit your needs . But most have prepared travel itineraries, like a day out around the four islands, or to Phang Nga Bay’s Hong Island and nearby spots, or even a combination of Phi Phi Islands and four islands.

19.1. Four Islands Private Boat Charter

Enjoy a pickup from your hotel and choose between a 4 or 6-hour trip to the “local” 4 islands in Krabi on a traditional long-tail boat.

Private 4 Islands Local Tour is the most affordable private trip you can book in Krabi , and it’s really worth the money.

A similar trip, but on a bit more comfortable longtail boat with a sun bed in the front as well as a covered inside space with a table, is the Private 4 Islands Tour .

And the most comfortable and luxurious option is the Private 4 Island Gourmet Breakfast Cruise . Super cool boat with a great crew and a well-planned itinerary with nice snorkeling spots.

19.2. Phi Phi Islands Private Boat Charter

The most popular trip both from Krabi and Phuket is the Phi Phi Islands day trip . And this one especially makes sense to book a private one if you have the budget or you’re traveling as a bigger group/family.

Booking a private Phi Phi Islands trip will allow you to adjust the itinerary so you come to Maya Bay as soon as possible in the morning and then choose other places you want to be at according to the crowds.

We recommend the Private Phi Phi Islands Speedboat Tour .

19.3. Hong Island Private Tour

We went on a private tour to Hong Island, and we can highly recommend it for a more comfortable day out.

There are a few options, from the Standard Longtail Boat Hong Island Tour to the Luxury Hong Island Longtail Boat Island Hopping Tour , as well as a Hong Island & 4 Islands with Sunset & Night Snorkel .

19.4. Phang Nga Bay Private Tour

For Phang Nga Bay, we recommend the James Bond Private Speedboat Tour , where you can not only visit James Bond Island, but also Koh Panyee, Ko Yao Noi, and Hong Island, including some other stops on nearby small islands.

A bit more affordable is the Private Phang Nga Bay Longtail Boat Tour , which visits James Bond Island, Koh Panyee, but also the incredible Samet Nangshe Viewpoint.

20. Get your adrenaline pumping

Krabi is the adventure capital of Thailand , and beyond rock climbing, you can get your adrenaline-pumping on activities like Ziplining, ATV rides, and stand-up sea paddleboarding in the mangroves.

20.1. Zipline

One of the most thrilling activities in Krabi is the Zipline Adventure Experience , where you spend a thrilling day riding zip lines 70 meters above limestone mountains and rubber trees, as well as rappel down cliffs.

20.2. ATV Tour

ATV tours are a standard offer in most Thai tourist destinations, and Krabi is no different, with really good trails that offer an exciting day out. Check the Krabi ATV Adventure , and choose between a 30-minute or 1-hour ATV ride through durian plantations, palm trees, and mud roads.

20.3. Stand Up Paddleboard

A cool activity you can do by yourself is to rent a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and go paddleboarding along the beaches or inside the mangroves.

A great option you can pre-book online is the SUP Board Sunrise or Sunset Tour , which includes hotel pickup from Ao Nang and then takes you to a cool paddleboarding spot right by the mangroves.

Another option is this Stand Up Paddle Board Rental on Ao Nang Beach (options: 1, 4, 8 hours, sunrise/sunset), including board delivery.

20.4. Horseriding

We usually avoid recommending any kind of animal tourism in South East Asia, as it’s unfortunately often the case that places don’t take care of their animals or straight out abuse them.

However, we saw that Ao Nam Mao Horse Riding in Krabi operates a proper horse-riding business and cares for the horses. You can walk along the beach with them, plus if your horse is up for it, you can even go in the water.

But please, before you hop on a horse, check if there are any obvious wounds on them and if they generally look malnourished. Although keep in mind, that the horses you see there are a bit smaller and skinnier by nature.

21. Join a cooking class

25. Day trip to Similan Islands

Another must-do day trip from Krabi or Phuket is to Similan Islands , one of the most breathtaking islands in Thailand .

Similan Islands, similan islands from krabi

While there aren’t as many day tours going to Similan Islands from Krabi, there are still options.

You can book the Similan Islands Day Tour , which picks you up at 6 am from Ao Nang and brings you back at around 7 pm. It’s a full day out, as the transport between Krabi and the starting point in Khao Lak takes about 2 hours one way. But it’s so worth it.

These tours from Krabi, however, don’t operate every day, so if the schedule doesn’t fit, we recommend adding a day either in Phuket or Khao Lak, as you don’t want to miss the Similan Islands .

26. Day trip to Khao Sok National Park

To experience a bit of a different landscape to Krabi’s, we recommend a day trip or overnight trip to Khao Sok National Park .

It’s a great destination to add to your itinerary, as you can go on a nature walk in the jungle, spot some wildlife, explore a cave or two, and take a bamboo raft ride down a beautiful river.

Since Khao Sok is quite a drive away from Krabi, expect to spend a full day out.

One of Khao Sok’s top attractions is Cheow Lan Lake with its floating bungalows, which you can visit on a One Day Khao Sok Cheow Lan Lake Tour .

Otherwise, the 2-Day Khao Sok Jungle Safari allows you to explore the main parts of the Khao Sok National Park, like bamboo rafting, night nature safari, and river canoeing while staying overnight in a jungle bungalow.

If you want to experience it all, then you need to stay at least one night at Khao Sok village and one night at Cheow Lan Lake.

Best time to visit Krabi

The best months to visit Krabi are between mid-November and February,  when it’s mostly dry and not too hot or humid. However, this is also a high season for Krabi, so booking hotels and tours in advance is advised!

Book your hotel in Krabi to secure the best deal!

March, April, and May are the hottest months  in Krabi and Thailand. Ensure you drink plenty of water and use sun protection during these times. The heat here is no joke!

GOOD TO KNOW

Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) takes place in April. It’s when water fights are organized all over the country.

  • Read our comprehensive Songkran Travel Guide to learn everything you need to know if you’re visiting Thailand at this time.

The wind starts picking up in April . That means the beaches are less enjoyable as the waves get bigger, and trash can be washed on the shore, even on some of the best Krabi beaches. But it’s not always the case, so you might have a completely different experience as well.

Rainy or monsoon season in Krabi generally starts in May/June and lasts till November , with its peak in August, September, and October. This is the time when Krabi experiences lots of downpours and showers.

However, despite the rain, there can still be lots of sunshine and good weather. You just need to be flexible and prepared for the rain.

weather in krabi, best time to visit krabi, krabi rainy season, krabi travel guide

Remember, Thailand is tropical, and the weather can be unpredictable . Plus, the weather seasons have slightly changed in South East Asia in recent years.

Another thing to note is the air pollution in Thailand in recent years due to the burning season in the north. During this season, the air quality, with less visibility, can be bad. But it all depends on the year. And sometimes, it’s not at all noticeable.

Where to stay in Krabi

The best area to stay in Krabi is Ao Nang , as it’s the most centrally located.

Otherwise, Railay Beach is a great place to stay in Krabi if you want to be close to the incredible Phra Nang Beach, as well as activities like rock climbing and boat trips to nearby destinations. All the tours usually offer pickups in Railay, and it’s easy to get to the mainland.

Staying in Krabi Town is best if you want to be closer to all the amenities. But keep in mind it takes about 30 minutes of a drive to get to the beaches in Ao Nang, as there is no closer one to the town.

For a more luxurious stay experience in Krabi, check out Tubkaek , as it’s where you can find amazing resorts on a more secluded beach.

Choosing the best area depends on what you want from Krabi. The main things to do in Krabi are scattered all over, so whatever you choose, you can’t be close to everything. But if you want to be closer to the beach, don’t stay in Krabi town, it’s just too far.

Where to eat in Krabi

While Krabi is less developed than its neighbor Phuket , it’s still full of great restaurants and cafes that offer a wide variety of dishes from local Thai cuisine to international food.

Our favorite restaurants in Krabi were Rainbow Restaurant and Little Govinda’s (vegetarian). Mama Kitchen also had good Thai food, but the service was a bit of a hit-and-miss.

Another excellent option is to get some snacks and street food at Krabi’s night markets. In Ao Nang, you can find street food stalls that open just before sunset at the Ao Nang Mosque Market . This market is much smaller than others, but it offers a good variety of things you can enjoy.

We recommend grabbing a delicious Thai pancake (roti) or some tasty papaya salad and fruit smoothies. Yum!

In addition to regular taxis, there are also shared minivans you can hail down at the side of the road, as well as motorbike taxis and even a kind of tuk-tuk .

25 Best Things to Do in Krabi, Thailand

Krabi is the most relaxing part to be in all of Thailand , it is a province that has the most stunning scenery imaginable, beautiful white beaches that stretch on for miles, a jungle and over 200 islands just of the coast. Krabi covers quite a large area so a lot of the attractions require a fair bit of traveling but when everywhere you look is beautiful it is no hardship at all.

The best time to visit is between November and April as the weather in the South of Thailand can be unpredictable but with many places now opening all year you will always find something to do.

The airport in Krabi is offering more routes and more frequent flights than ever before so come and explore the best things to do in Krabi !

1. Escape From It All At Railay Beaches & Caves

Railay Beach, Krabi

Railay beach is potentially the most attractive beach in Thailand, accessible only by boat due to the large cliffs on each side cutting it off from the mainland. Here you will find stunning white sand, breath taking views and fantastic limestone cliffs. When you arrive at Railay you will not find any roads or cars because of its cut off location, just a few long tail boats and a couple of bars to spend your evenings in. If you want to really feel away from the world this might just be as good as it gets.

Try this half day rock climbing tour on Railay Beach (includes hotel pick-up & drop off and a professional guide/instructor).

2. Rent Your Own Boat Or Hire A Guide

Krabi Boat

There are roughly 200 islands sitting just off the Krabi coastline, some are small rocks jutting out of the sea, some are quite a lot larger but still remain uninhabited and some are large islands with many inhabitants living a normal life. You can rent a boat from Krabi town or Ao Nang and explore the islands on your own if you are a keen sailor. Alternatively you can rent a boat that comes with a guide so that you can relax whilst everything is taken care of. The best time of year to go is between November and April to avoid any unpredictable weather.

3. See Outstanding Beauty At Thung Teao Forest Natural Park

Thung Teao Forest Natural Park

Home to many spectacular plants and animals The Natural Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty, one part that is particularly inspiring is the Crystal Lagoon. Also known as the Emerald Pool, the water is naturally warm and completely clear, you can go for a swim and escape to another world whilst admiring the waterfall. Keep your eye out for the Pita Gurney bird, once thought to be extinct but some have been spotted within the park.

4. Visit A Temple In A Cave At Wat Tham Sua

Wat Tham Sua

One of Thailand’s natural wonders and certainly worth a visit is this warren of caves that sit within the jungle and house many monks that live and worship here, legend has it that a tiger once lived in the cave which is where the name of the temple originated. The caves can be explored and you will find many icons and relics to take a look at. When you are at the caves you need to make sure you visit the ‘footprint of the Buddha’ it is a climb up 1,237 steps which is no small task but when you get to the top you are rewarded with 360 degree views on the Andaman Sea and the beautiful islands that fall within it.

5. Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi Island

After being used as the film location for the movie ‘The Beach’ The Phi Phi islands shot to fame and the tourists have never stopped coming, you can get there by speedboat which takes about forty five minutes from Krabi mainland. There are two islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, Phi Phi Don is inhabited and is the one where all the tourists flock. Known for its turquoise water and stunning beaches the island really is a tropical paradise. If you are planning on taking a trip leave early in the morning to beat the crowds as it gets very busy.

6. Take A Dip At Klong Thom Hot Springs

Klong Thom Hot Springs

Set inside beautiful rainforest surroundings are the Krabi Hot Springs. They have been cut into the smooth rocks and the water is provided from deep rooted thermal springs that are located inside volcanic chambers. The water get up to temperatures of forty degrees Celsius and contains natural mineral salts that have many healing properties. You will feel totally relaxed here and if you fancy a cooling swim after there is a stream that you can do this in. The springs are quite close to the Emarald Pool so it is worth combining the two.

7. Khao Khanab Nam – The Landmarks Of Krabi

Khao Khanab Nam

The Khao Khanab Nam Mountains are the most famous landmarks in Krabi, they sit either side of the river and are a real natural wonder. The two mountains sit on top of a large series of caves that have many stalagmites and Stalactites, there are also a large number of human skeletons that could have been from people stranded during a flood. One of the mountains is climbable and offers some excellent photograph opportunities from the top.

8. Chill Out On Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta Yai

Koh Lanta Yai is an island about two hours away from Krabi Town, it is a small island that stretches about twenty kilometers from end to end. The island is inhabited and home too many guest houses and resorts. The island itself has various beautiful beaches that are often quiet but look absolutely stunning. If you want to relax for a few days this is the place to get away and do it. The prices on the island are still quite low as tourism has not reached the levels of the Phi Phi islands yet. Koh Lanta is home to many diving schools all certified and ready to take you out to see the beautiful marine life and coral the waters have to offer. A bridge is currently being built that will link the island to Koh Lanta Noi giving you even more places to explore.

9. Step Back In Time At Krabi Town

Krabi Town

Unlike many places that you visit on holiday Krabi Town is different, it still receives many tourists but it has not changed itself to pamper to the tourists needs. It has still managed to retain its ‘local’ feel. The river running though the town is always full of fishing boats bringing in their days catches ready for the restaurant tables. The town has a genuine feel to it with its local bars and eating spots to it is worth visiting for that authentic taste of Thailand.

10. Geological Wonder At Susan Hoi

Susan Hoi

Dating back to sometime between 25 and 40 million years and sitting on a 200 meters long stretch is a fossilized shell fish cemetery, Limestone deposits in the surrounding water covered the shell fish and fossilized them, it is one of only three cemetery’s like this discovered in the world today. If you like geology then this has to be visited whilst you are in Krabi. There is also a Chinese temple which you can visit as well as mangrove forests in the area.

Four Island Tour, Krabi

One of the most popular tours that visitors to Krabi go on is the Four Island Tour, It takes you on a tour of four different islands, and they are usually Tup Island, Phra Nang Cave, Chicken Island and Poda Island. Ao Nang Beach is not the prettiest beach in the area and if you are after white sand and a tranquil setting you are better off at Railay Beach, but if you are looking for some nightlife and a lively atmosphere this is a good place to start. There are many bars and restaurants in the area selling plenty of varieties of cocktails as well as all the food types you would expect in a tourist hotspot. It is also a great place to book your tours from as there are a lot of operators in the area fighting for business keeping the prices slightly lower than some areas.

14. Admire The Beauty At Phra Nang Beach

Phra Nang Beach, Krabi

Having been voted as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world this is a place you will not want to miss. Outside are various food stalls and vendors looking to sell amulets.

17. Spend An Afternoon Rock Climbing

Krabi rock climbing

Climbers from around the world come to Krabi to scale the limestone rocks that are plentiful in this area. Various schools cater to beginner climbers where sport climbing is practiced. It is a much safer way for beginners to start as there are permanent hooks placed into the rock with ropes through them, when you lose your grip you will only fall a maximum of fifty centimeters. For experienced climbers there are more than 700 climbs available in the area ranging from F4 (easy) to F8c (professional).

Famous throughout the country are the Thai cookery schools and Krabi is no exception to that, every inhabited island in Krabi will have at least one as does Krabi mainland. The schools provide all the ingredients and the lessons are run by Thai people that have had years of experience cooking. Whether it is green curry or Pad Thai they will be able to teach you the correct ingredients and techniques to use. Most classes finish with you sitting down to sample your creations.

White Water Rafting, Krabi

Fairly new to Krabi is the opportunity to go white water rafting. The rapids are on the Songprak River where a seven kilometer stretch of the river is used. The grade of difficulty is levels 2-4 making it a fairly low difficulty run which is perfect for complete beginners. The instructors stay in the boats with you making sure that you do not run into any difficulties along the way. A real adrenaline sport and one not for the faint hearted.

21. Kayaking

Kayaking in Krabi

For those looking to do something a little less exhilarating than white water rafting but still wanting to get out on the water might like the option of kayaking. There are several sites in Krabi to go kayaking each with different benefits. Ao Thalane provide mangroves and canyons, Bor Thor has ancient limestone caves and Koh Hong has a lagoon hidden in its center. In each location you will be spoilt to beautiful views and interesting wildlife (maybe even some monkeys) whilst meandering along in your Kayak.

There are pool tables to play on and an extensive cocktail list to keep you busy throughout the evening. A lot of bars in Krabi play reggae but this bar plays good American bands from the nineties and beyond. Western and Thai food is served with the pizzas having an excellent reputation.

23. See A Different Kind Of Island At Koh Klang

Koh Klang Island

Unlike the other islands that have been mentioned Koh Klang does not have white sandy beaches to admire and lie on, instead it is a simple fishing island where the local people live off the ocean in a simple existence. Instead of the usual red and gold that you see in many Thai temple this one has been decorated with white walls and a roof made of dark blue tiles. The walls of the temple are decorated in beautiful paintings and many relics can be seen. A souvenir shop as well as various food stalls sit outside the temple should you need some refreshment after the climb to the top.

Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint

About 30 kilometers to the north of Krabi Town is a place called Nong Thale, here is where you begin your hike to the summit, and the trail itself is about four kilometers long and should take about two and a half hours to reach the summit. Khao Ngon Nak translates to mean Dragon Crest Mountain and feels like a real adventure as you slowly make your way uphill.  Whilst hiking you will encounter a stream, a waterfall and a couple of viewpoints. Krabi Itinerary Pre-Travel Tips

Planning a trip to Krabi is relatively easy since the region is very tourist-friendly. Moreover, since Thailand is one of the cheapest countries in Asia , it’s a great destination for all kinds of travelers – whether you’re backpacking Thailand or visiting with friends or family.

However, Krabi covers quite a large area. As a consequence, there are a few things that you’ll need in place to guarantee a hassle-free Krabi vacation. Here are some travel tips and hacks to help you plan the perfect Krabi itinerary.

  • Search the  best hotels in Krabi . Krabi is quite a tourist hotspot, so rooms tend to fill up quickly. Make sure to book accommodation well in advance.  Also, expect steep prices during peak seasons.
  • If you’re traveling with lots of luggage, or not comfortable catching a bus from the airport,   booking a private transfer  is an excellent alternative.
  • Wifi is widely available at most tourist spots, restaurants, and hotels in Krabi. But if you prefer to have internet on the go, grabbing an eSIM is highly encouraged. By doing so, you’ll never have to worry about accessing maps, checking transport schedules, or planning your stops. Alternatively, pick up  pocket wifi while still in Bangkok .
  • Unfortunately, things can and do go wrong when you travel. Make sure you have travel insurance when visiting Thailand. I use SafetyWing .
  • If you aren’t comfortable navigating Krabi on your own, o r perhaps traveling in a group, this Krabi private custom tour   allows you to see all the highlights without the headache of planning out a trip.
  • While it’s great to discover all of Krabi’s best bits independently, having a travel guide handy is always a good idea. This Lonely Planet includes tons of valuable tips on traveling Thailand and was a lifesaver on my Krabi solo trip.

When to Visit Krabi, Thailand

South Thailand has two very distinctive seasons, a dry season and a wet season. The  best time to visit Krabi is during the dry season , which runs from  November  through  March . During this time, you can expect pleasant temperatures and sunny blue skies – perfect for a Krabi beach getaway.

Krabi’s off-season starts in April and runs through October . April is the hottest month in Krabi Province, and October sees the most rain during the year. Although it is possible to enjoy good weather during the wet season, frequent downpours aren’t uncommon.

How to Get to Krabi, Southern Thailand

Krabi is a vast province in Southern Thailand and includes several popular destinations stretched over land and sea. These include Krabi Town ,  Ao Nang ,  Koh Phi Phi , and  beautiful Koh Lanta , to name just a few.

Krabi International Airport is the main gateway to Krabi Province, and most likely the starting point of your Krabi itinerary. There are many daily flights from Bangkok to Krabi , as well as elsewhere in Thailand and Asia. If you haven’t booked a flight yet, Skyscanner is good place to compare airline prices and find cheap domestic or international flights. For those backpacking Thailand, this SEA transport guide includes lots of tips to help navigate your travels.

Once at the airport, it’s easy to access the rest of the province by land or sea. If you’re visiting the nearby islands or Railay Bay, you can take a ferry, speedboat, or long-tail boat to access them. Inland there is also an array of taxis, buses, tuk-tuks , and songthaews ready to transport you to all corners of Ao Nang and Krabi Town.

Joining a island hopping tour to Chicken Island is an excellent add-on to any Krabi travel itinerary.

How to Get to Your Destination From Krabi Airport

If this is your first visit to Krabi, I recommend basing yourself in Ao Nang or Railay. From here, it’s easy to explore the rest of Krabi Province and come face-to-face with some of Thailand’s best landmarks .

To get to  Ao Nang from the airport , it’s a good idea to  book a discounted transfer  in advance. Alternatively, take the  shuttle bus  (150 Baht) or order a  fixed-rate transfer  at the airport upon arrival (600 Baht).  Read my detailed guide on exactly how to get from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang for more tips.

The  fastest and easiest way to get to Railay  is to book a direct transfer with your hotel . Railay is c ompletely cut off by land, so it is slightly harder to get there . If you are traveling with lots of luggage , this will be the best way to get there. If that’s not an option, catch a long-tail boat to Railay at Ao Nang Private Boat Club  or  Ao Nam Mao Pier .

If you are headed to  Koh Lanta  or  Koh Phi Phi  directly from the airport and haven’t booked a transfer in advance, don’t worry. There are several stalls within the arrivals hall where you can quickly get this sorted out.

Taking a day trip to discover the best Islands near Krabi is a fun day out.

The Ultimate 5 Day Krabi Itinerary: The Best Things to do in Krabi

Now that you know when to visit Krabi and how to get to Krabi, it’s time to find out where to go and what to do!  Ready to discover the best things to do in Krabi? Let’s dive into this 5 days in Krabi itinerary!

Krabi Itinerary Day 1: Explore Ao Nang

On your first day in Krabi, you’ll have ample town to settle in and orientate yourself to Ao Nang town.

Ao Nang is a bustling little seaside town with plenty to entice travelers. Make sure to read my super detailed guide on top things to do in Ao Nang , as well as my guide on the best places to stay in Ao Nang on any budget.

The very first thing you’ll want to do after arriving at the airport is to catch the local airport shuttle bus (150 Thai Baht) or grab a   transfer (600 Thai Baht) to get to your accommodation in Ao Nang town stress-free. (Pre-book a  shared transfer  or a  private transfer  here).

Once you’ve settled in, it’s time to see what Ao Nang has on offer! Here are my top recommendations on what to do in Ao Nang on your first day in Krabi.

Head to the Beach

Ao Nang is blessed with an incredible laid-back vibe, a bustling nightlife scene, great food, and gorgeous beaches. While most travelers flock to  Ao Nang Beach  to enjoy the sand and sea, a short stroll further you’ll find  Nopparat Thara Beach .

Nopparat Thara is a great beach to chill for a few hours and the ideal spot if you want to get away from the crowds. The main road is lined with lots of cute beach bars and restaurants. So, if the heat gets too much for you or if you simply want to enjoy an ice-cold beer with a view, the options are endless!

Tranquil beach setting

Take a Sunset Cruise

Another fun thing to do in Ao Nang is to join a sunset cruise . It’s a great way to see Krabi’s spectacular coastline and scenery from the water while you sail past several of Krabi’s most famous islands. The best part? You can jump off the boat and discover the diverse underwater world along the way.

Snack Your Way Through the Night Market

After watching the epic sunset, it’s time to head to the Ao Nang Night Market to feast on incredible treats. While Ao Nang’s food market isn’t nearly as big as the  night market in Krabi Town , it is one of the most popular night markets in Krabi and should not be overlooked.

Ao Nang Night Market boasts a great selection of food, and you’ll find many vendors selling tasty Thai street food like pad Thai, Thai pancakes, sticky mango rice, fresh seafood, and all kinds of kebabs.

Ao Nang Night Market

Krabi Itinerary Day 2: Go Island Hopping

Krabi is blessed with 80 marvelous islands near its shores and, consequently, quite a hotspot for island hopping. That said, there are a few Krabi islands that you definitely shouldn’t miss on your Krabi 5 days itinerary.

While it’s possible to rent a long-tail boat for a day to explore Krabi at your leisure, the easiest way to discover Krabi’s gems are on an organized tour. Make sure also to read my detailed guide on the best islands near Krabi for more tips on which islands not to miss.

Hopping in a long-tail boat to explore the dreamy islands near Krabi's coastline should not be missed.

Krabi 4 Islands Tour

You can’t visit Krabi without adding an island hopping tour to your 5 day Krabi itinerary !

The  Krabi 4 Islands tour  is the perfect opportunity to see some of Thailand’s most dreamy islands. The tour stops at four islands, namely Phra Nang Cave, Koh Tup, Koh Poda and Chicken Island. It’s a fun day trip to take, and there are lots of opportunities to snorkel, swim, or lie under a coconut tree.

Taking this full day tour is a great way to see the best of the best and will allow you to maximize your time in Krabi.

Taking a Krabi 4 island day tour is a highlight on any 5 days in Krabi itinerary.

Hong Island Tour

Another excellent day tour, I highly recommend, is  spending a day at Hong Island . Besides the exquisite beaches, Hong Island boasts crystal clear turquoise water full of marine life. The best part, you don’t need to go very deep to see all kids of bright-colored fish dashing past you.

After you’ve explored the treasures below, make sure to take a hike through the island’s thick jungle or rent a kayak to explore the dreamy turquoise lagoon.

Exploring Krabi's diverse and tranquil coastline.

Krabi Itinerary Day 3: Explore Railay Beach

When spending time in Krabi, a visit to Railay Beach is a huge must! Revered for its gorgeous beaches, stunning craggy cliffs, countless adventure-filled activities, and chilled out vibes, Railay is the perfect add-on to any Krabi itinerary. It’s also the perfect spot to experience outdoor adventures in Thailand !

What really sets Railay Beach apart from other gems in Krabi is its location. Since Railay is completely cut-off by land access, you’ll need to catch a long-tail boat to get here. Luckily, Railay is only a 10-minute long-tail boat ride from Ao Nang, making it easy to access.

While Railay is relatively small, there’s also plenty to do and see. From rock climbing and kayaking to hiking, swimming in a secret lagoon and much more! Read my super detailed guide on the most unmissable things to do in Railay for more tips.

Railay Beach packs the perfect mix of outdoor fun, pristine beaches, and epic sunsets.

Krabi Itinerary Day 4: Head out to Koh Phi Phi

If you have 4 days in Krabi, you’ll have ample time to visit the dreamy Phi Phi islands . The islands are stunning and possibly the most beautiful islands in Asia !

If you just want to take it easy, head straight to the beach to enjoy the sand and sea. Many shops sell or rent snorkel gear, so it’s easy to explore the warm waters at your leisure. Afterward, kick back at one of the cute beach bars with a boozy cocktail as you wait for the epic sunset.

More adventurous travelers shouldn’t miss the chance to catch the epic sunset from the Phi Phi Viewpoint. It’s a short hike taking no longer than 30 minutes, but prepare to break a sweat. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded panoramic views over the islands, sea, and cliffs. It’s truly magical!

While it is possible to take a  day trip to Koh Phi Phi by speedboat , I suggest staying overnight or even longer if your Krabi itinerary is flexible.  By doing so, you can easily squeeze in a visit to the world-renowned Maya Bay, which was made famous by the movie “The Beach.” After being closed for several years for coral rehabilitation, Maya Bay opened back up to tourists in 2022. You can only visit on an  organized tour  now, and even though you can’t swim there anymore, it truly is one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see in your life!

pileh lagoon Koh Phi Phi

Travel T ip:  If you’re visiting Koh Phi Phi during peak season, make sure to book accommodations well in advance. Koh Phi Phi is a popular destination, so hotels fill up rather quickly. I suggest staying somewhere central as some parts of the island is only accessible by a long-tail boat. The  Phi Phi Holiday Resort  is a great mid-range option, while  Phi Phi Coco Beach Resort   is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an upscale secluded stay.

Krabi Itinerary Day 5: Unwind and Soak up the Vibes

On the last day of your Krabi 5 day itinerary, reward yourself for getting through Krabi’s top attractions on this Krabi itinerary! Here are my recommendations on what to do in Krabi on day 5.

Join a Cooking Class

Start your morning by learning the ins and outs of Thai cooking!

Joining a cooking class in Krabi is a massive must while visiting Thailand, and also a fun way to master a new skill. During the cooking class, you’ll prepare seven local dishes of your choice and get lots of tips to take back home with you.  You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make Thai food, but don’t let that fool you, you’ll work up quite an appetite during this 3-hour cooking class !

Master the ins and outs of Thai cuisine by going a fun cooking class.

Soak in a Hot Spring

A great way to get away from the crowds is to head out to  Wareerak Hot Spring . Located near the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, this is the perfect place to spend your last day in Krabi. The springs are surrounded by lush jungle, making it an excellent place for nature seekers.

After a soak in the steamy pools, make sure to drop by the dreamy  Emerald Pool a bit further afield. It’s a short trek, and you’ll pass by gentle streams, waterfalls, and tropical plant life along the way.  If you still have energy, climb the 1,237 steps to the top of Tiger Cave Temple , where you’ll be rewarded with a bird’s-eye view over the Krabi basin.

Stopping by the Emerald Pool to explore Krabi's lush interior is a must-do on any Krabi itinerary.

Get a Thai Massage

No visit to Krabi, or Thailand, would be complete without experiencing a Thai massage.

Massage parlors are practically on every corner, so it’s really easy to find one. If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, I suggest spending the afternoon at  Boossabakorn Spa  for a full pamper session.

What to Wear in Krabi: Krabi Packing List

Since the weather in Krabi is mostly hot and humid, it’s best to pack light, breathable clothes. Besides the usual beachwear like swimwear, t-shirts, shorts, light dresses, and skirts, it’s a good idea also to pack flip-flops, sunglasses, and a hat.

Here are a few more essentials to add to your Krabi packing list:

  • You’ll probably need a travel adapter for your visit to Krabi and the rest of Thailand.  This world travel adapter  is lightweight and covers more than 160 countries.
  • Since you’ll probably be spending lots of time near the water, keep your phone and belongings safe from getting wet. Make sure to grab  this waterproof cellphone case  and  this handy dry bag  to enjoy a stress-free Krabi itinerary.
  • You won’t have trouble finding sunscreen in Krabi, but since most of them aren’t always eco-friendly, it’s a good idea to bring your own.  This reef-safe sunscreen  doesn’t contain a whitening agent, and its the perfect choice for eco-friendly or vegan travelers.
  • Mosquitoes aren’t uncommon in Krabi, so make sure to pack DEET-free bug spray .
  • Make sure you pack a lightweight microfibre towel, like this Turkish beach towel that will dry quickly and won’t weigh you down.
  • The weather in Krabi can be somewhat unpredictable, especially during the wet season. Pack a  lightweight travel umbrella  that won’t weigh you down.
  • Don’t forget your camera! I never travel without my  Olympus Mirrorless Camera , but if you prefer something more lightweight, bring a GoPro Hero . Just a heads-up — most of the islands near Krabi do not allow the use of drones . Make sure you do proper research before flying a drone in Thailand.

Thailand boasts paradise beach settings lined with towering palm trees.

5 Days Krabi Itinerary Conclusion

Whether you have 3 days in Krabi or planning to spend 5 days or more here, Krabi is an excellent add-on to any Thailand itinerary. Although these are just a handful of the top attractions in Krabi, I hope this guide will come in handy when planning your Krabi itinerary.

How to get to Krabi?

Krabi is well connected to other countries by the Krabi International Airport. Direct flights are available from different parts of Thailand including Bangkok and Chiang Mai as well as from  Malaysia  and  Singapore .

Plane tickets are quite cheap since the route is serviced by low-cost airlines like Air Asia and Vietjet Air. You can book your plane tickets on 12go.asia .

If you’re staying in Ao nang, you can take a shared minivan from Krabi Airport for 150 baht or a private taxi for about 500 baht ( read this guide to find out how to get from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang ). For those staying in Krabi town, the minivan from the airport should cost about 90 baht.

Where to Stay in Krabi?

One of the best places to stay in Krabi is Ao Nang since it’s close to the beach and the perfect jumping-off point for those wishing to explore the nearby islands.

There’s a huge range of accommodations in Ao Nang to choose from. Centara Ao Nang Beach is a great choice if you want to be near the beach.

Ao Nang Cliff Resort , on the other hand, is located along Ao Nang Walking Street close to all the restaurants and bars, and boasts an incredible panoramic view from its infinity pool.

If you’re on a budget, you can opt for Wake Up Ao Nang , Seaworld Guesthouse , J Mansion , Buri Tara Resort , or Pop In Hostel .

Khao Khanap Nam Mountain in Krabi Town

Backpackers will often stay in Krabi Town as there are loads of cheap hotels there. But the main draw is the night market that serves cheap and delicious local food.

Pak Up Hostel , located less than a 5-minute walk from Krabi Night Market, is great for backpackers. A huge plus is that the beds have curtains for privacy and breakfast is provided for free.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a private room, Lada Krabi Express and OYO 1118 are both great choices.

4 island tour.

One of the best things to do in Krabi is to go on a 4 Island hopping tour to visit some of the best Krabi islands like Koh Poda, Chicken Island, and Tub Island as well as Phra Nang Beach and Cave.

Koh Poda is my favorite since it’s the most picturesque one with fine white sand and a single limestone cliff standing right across the shore.

Chicken Island is great for snorkeling thanks to the crystal-clear water and abundance of colorful fish. I also recommend checking out the viewpoint on Chicken Island as it takes less than 5 minutes to get to the top.

If the tide is low, you can also walk from Chicken Island to Tub Island as they are connected by a beautiful sandbar.

Note that you have to pay a national park fee of 200 baht for adults and 100 baht for children to visit the islands.

Lunch, drinks, snorkeling gear, and round-trip transfers are usually included in the tour price, so it’s great for those on a budget. You can either join a group tour or hire a private boat to take you to the islands.

Klong Root is a gorgeous mirror lake/river located only about a 15-minute drive from Ao Nang and one of the most unique places to visit in Krabi.

I haven’t heard about this attraction in Krabi until my third visit and I absolutely enjoyed my time there. It’s quite popular among locals, especially during the weekends but not a lot of tourists know about this place.

You can rent kayaks for 300 baht (or 400 baht if you want to have someone paddle for you) and admire the reflection of the limestone rocks and vegetation as you glide peacefully along the river. Toward the end, you’ll reach a small clear-water lagoon where you can swim in.

There are also several “Instagram spots” near the lake where you can take photos or just sit back and enjoy the view.

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)

Hiking to the Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) is one of the best things to do in Krabi.

The 1,237 steps leading to the top are very steep and uneven in some places but well worth it for the amazing 360-degree view.

Depending on your level of fitness, it should take between 30 minutes to one hour to get to the top. Make sure to watch out for the monkeys as they can sometimes be aggressive.

If you want to visit Tiger Cave Temple, you can either join a guided Krabi jungle tour which also includes visits to the Krabi Hot Springs and Emerald Pool (mentioned below), or hire a private taxi for about 2,000 baht for the whole day.

Day trip to Emerald Pool and Krabi Hot Springs

Another top thing to do in Krabi, Thailand is to take a day trip to the Emerald Pool and Krabi Hot Springs.

The Emerald Pool is a clear-water lake and can be accessed through either an 800-meter or 1.4-km jungle trail. It’s definitely the perfect place to cool off after hiking to the Tiger Cave Temple. Entrance to the Emerald Pool costs 400 baht for adults and 200 baht for children.

The Krabi Hot Springs on the other hand is a series of cascading streams heated by underground volcanic chambers. The water temperature averages around 35-40 degrees Celsius and is claimed to have therapeutic and soothing properties. Entrance to the hot springs costs 200 baht for adults and 100 baht for children.

Tip : You can visit both attractions as well as the Tiger Cave Temple as part of a guided Krabi Jungle tour or hire a private taxi for the day.

Guan Yin Bodhisattva Mountain Temple

Guan Yin Bodhisattva Mountain Temple is one of the best hidden gems in Krabi and a great alternative to the Tiger Cave Temple.

Not many tourists know about this temple, making it a great place to go if you want to escape the crowds. Every single time I visited, I saw only about four or five people there.

The view is just as incredible (if not more) as the one at Tiger Cave Temple but you only have to brave 250 steps to get to the top. Plus, I didn’t encounter any cheeky monkeys there!

The temple is located about 3 km from Ao Nang Beach . While you can walk there from Ao Nang, it will take about 45 minutes which isn’t ideal in the heat. Instead, I recommend renting a motorbike or hiring a Grab taxi (about 90 baht).

At the top, you’ll find a gold Buddha statue overlooking rows of limestone cliffs scattered in the distance.

Tip : The middle stairs are quite steep and narrow but the ones on the far left-hand side are less steep.

Hong Island and Hong Lagoon

Located about a 45-minute boat ride from Ao Nang, Hong Island is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Krabi. The island features fine white sand, clear blue water, and tall limestone cliffs jutting out of the ocean.

Some of the best things to do here include swimming and snorkeling. You can also check out the small walking trail that goes around the island or visit the 360 viewpoint which is one of the latest attractions.

Before getting to the main beach on Hong Island, the boat will also make a stop at the Hong Lagoon, an emerald lagoon completely surrounded by huge limestone cliffs.

boats floating on an emerald pool at hong lagoon | best place to visit in Krabi

You can get to Hong Island and Lagoon by taking the public longtail boat for 500 baht per person but this option is more time-consuming as the boat will only depart once there are at least 8 people.

This is why most people choose to visit as part of a group tour by longtail boat or speedboat. The tour is the most cost-effective option as you’ll also visit Pakbia Island and Lading Island.

The tour price also includes round-trip transfers to and from your hotel, lunch, drinks, and snorkeling gear. Note that most tours don’t include the national park fee which cost 300 baht per person.

If you’re traveling with a group, you can rent a private longtail boat for about 2,500 baht for the day.

Railay Beach

Gigantic limestone cliffs, powdery white sand, turquoise water, and rows of colorful longtail boats are what make the perfect postcard picture of Krabi and you’ll find exactly that at Railay Beach.

Although attached to the mainland, Railay can only be reached by a 10-minute longtail boat ride which costs 100 baht each way, making it a quick and easy day trip from Krabi . You can read my guide on how to get to Railay beach from Ao Nang for more details.

The boat will drop you off at Railay West where you can relax in the shade or swim and snorkel. You can also explore the walking street to do some shopping or check out the restaurants and bars.

The most popular activity on Railay is rock climbing but you can also hike to the viewpoint and princess lagoon or visit the Diamond Cave.

Kayaking at Ao Thalane

Another must-do activity in Krabi is kayaking at Ao Thalane. You can opt to kayak in the morning, afternoon, or during sunset.

I chose the morning and it was very peaceful and quiet with very few people. I found the morning session to be ideal as it wasn’t too hot.

We spent about 2.5 hours kayaking through limestone cliffs and mangroves and also spotted some monkeys.

While you can take a taxi to Ao Thalane and rent a kayak from there, it will be more expensive, plus you won’t have a guide to show you the way which is why it’s best to book a guided tour.

This highly-rated Ao Thalane kayaking tour includes round-trip transfers to and from your hotel in Ao Nang or Krabi Town, an English-speaking guide, life jackets, water, fruits, and lunch (add-on).

They also provide dry bags, so no need to worry about getting your belongings wet if you don’t have your own.

Pai Plong Beach

Pai Plong Beach  is one of my favorite beaches in Ao Nang. It can be accessed from Ao Nang beach by walking along the Monkey Trail (which as the name suggests is full of monkeys but luckily they only hang out near the entrance).

Alternatively, you can charter a longtail boat from Ao Nang for about 100 baht.

It reminds me a lot of Railay Beach with its huge karst cliffs so if you’re looking for a less-crowded alternative to Railay, I highly recommend visiting Pai Plong beach instead.

While the water is clear, I didn’t find a lot of fish but it’s still a nice place to swim and relax far away from the crowds.

While the beach belongs to Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villa , you can enter for free after signing in with the security guard.

Tab Kak Hang Nak Hill (Dragon Crest Mountain)

Tab Kak Hang Nak Hill , also known as Dragon Crest Mountain or Khao Ngon Nak viewpoint is one of the best adventurous things to do in Krabi.

After a challenging 2-hour hike, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs dotting the land and sea.

The trail is easy to follow as there are signs along the way but due to the steep incline, it does require a moderate level of fitness.

If you want to do this hike, make sure to read my detailed guide to hiking Tab Kak Hang Nak Hill .

The trailhead is located about a 30-minute drive from Ao Nang. To get there, you can rent a motorbike, hire a private taxi for about 1,000 baht, or join this tour which includes a morning hike at Dragon Crest followed by an ATV ride and a kayaking trip.

Ao Nang Walking Street

Whether you’re on the hunt for souvenirs or want to buy new clothes, make sure to check out Ao Nang Walking Street.

If you head north from Ao Nang beach, you’ll find a huge selection of clothing stores, souvenir shops, restaurants, and bars lining down the street.

This is also where I recommend staying if you want to be within walking distance of Ao Nang beach. There are lots of budget places to stay like Seaworld Guesthouse , J Mansion , and Pop In Hostel , all of which I stayed at and recommend for budget travelers.

If you’re looking for more high-end hotels, Ao Nang Cliff Resort and Centara Ao Nang Beach are both great options.

Phra Nang Beach and Cave

With a gorgeous white-sand beach surrounded by tall karst cliffs, crystal-clear water, scenic viewpoints, and two interesting-looking caves full of wooden phallic shrines, Phra Nang beach  is one of the most beautiful attractions in Krabi, if not the whole of Thailand.

You can have a massage right on the beach, rent kayaks for about 100 baht per hour to explore the nearby cave formations or take a rock climbing course .

CLICK HERE TO BOOK A ROCK CLIMBING COURSE

The beach used to be lined with longtail boats selling Thai food but I didn’t see any during my recent visit, so if you need to buy food, head to Railay Walking Street where most of the restaurants and bars are found.

Krabi Town became famous thanks to the Krabi Night Market that takes place every weekend.

Although it’s a town, it has more of a local village vibe. You can find a great selection of budget hotels and hostels here, so if you’re on a budget and don’t mind staying slightly away from the beach, Krabi Town would be a great choice.

Some of the best things in Krabi Town include Pak Nam River waterfront, Wat Kaeo Korawaram (a Buddhist temple sitting on top of a hill), Krabi Urban Forest Mangrove Walk, and Khao Khanap Nam Cave where the skeleton of a giant was supposedly discovered.

Krabi Night Market

One of the best things to do in Krabi for foodies is to visit the Krabi Night Market in Krabi Town.

Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening from 6 to 10 p.m, the market will be packed with vendors selling clothes, souvenirs, artworks, plants, and so much delicious food from satays to grilled fish, pad thai, sushi, and more.

You can also watch live music performances and fire shows at the night market.

Those staying in Krabi Town can easily walk to the night market as most hotels are located nearby.

If you’re staying in Ao Nang, you can book a shared minivan for about 150 baht per person. Pretty much every tour operator along Ao Nang main street will be selling tickets for the minivan.

Alternatively, you can go on a  guided food tour  if you want to learn more about the local cuisine.

Tip : I also recommend checking out the Black Crab Night Market located along the waterfront. It’s smaller than the Krabi Night Market but is less crowded and has more food variety.

Lesser-known beaches near Ao Nang

There are quite a few beaches in Ao Nang that feel less touristy compared to the main beach. Some of them include Nopharat Thara Beach, Klong Muang Beach, and Tubkaek Beach.

Nopparat Thara is closest to Ao Nang and although it might not be the best swimming beach, it’s definitely a great spot to watch the sunset. When the tide is low, you can easily walk to the neighboring Koh Liao and Koh Khao Sam Nuai Islands.

If you’re looking for a place to eat near Nopparat Thara Beach, make sure to check out the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market which opens every evening from 4 p.m to 10 p.m.

Sunset on Nopharat Thara Beach

Klong Muang beach , on the other hand, is located about 12 km away. The beach is lined with only a couple of hotels and restaurants, so it’s super quiet. The water is calm, crystal-clear, and not too deep, making it ideal for kids.

I recommend eating at Ruean Siam @Sea Restaurant , a small restaurant overlooking the beach, or at the local food stalls found next to the beach entrance.

Finally, Tubkaek Beach is the perfect place to take a refreshing swim after hiking the Tab Kak Hang Nak Hill since it’s located less than 1 km from the trail entrance.

Tonsai Beach

If you’re looking for a cheaper and less crowded alternative to Railay, I recommend Tonsai, a beautiful white-sand beach bordered by swaying palm trees and jagged cliffs which are the perfect rock climbing playground.

There have been quite a few developments on Tonsai recently with the opening of new high-end resorts but you can still find some budget accommodations like Chill Out Bungalows and Dream Valley Resort as well as some cheap local restaurants.

The best and cheapest way to get to Tonsai Beach is to walk from Railay West. It should take about 10-15 minutes but this is only possible during low tide. Alternatively, you can hire a longtail boat or hike the jungle trail that connects Tonsai to Railay East.

Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi is very popular among backpackers and party-goers but if you venture past the main touristy areas, you’ll find a couple of chilled and quiet spots that are also worth checking out.

One of the best things I did during my trip was hiking to Koh Phi Phi viewpoint but I didn’t stop there.

I hiked all the way to the more secluded beaches like Loh Ba Kao Bay and Loh Lana Bay and passed through a bridge overlooking a clear-water mangrove swamp.

view of mountains and beaches from Koh Phi Phi viewpoint

Ton Sai and Loh Dalum are two of the most popular beaches on Koh Phi Phi , but if you follow the small coastal trail path beside Phi Phi Bayview Resort , you’ll reach the more secluded Viking beach and Long beach .

Snorkeling tours in Koh Phi Phi are also great as well as a visit to the famous Maya Bay. Note that there’s a national park fee of 400 baht to enter the beach.

While the  Koh Phi Phi day tours from Krabi  are very popular for those short on time, it’s best to stay at least 2 days to fully explore the island. You can easily get from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi by a 45-minute speedboat or 2.5-hour ferry ride.

Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi actually forms part of the Phang Nga Province but since it’s very close to Krabi, I’ve decided to include it on this list of the best things to do in Krabi.

This underrated island can be reached by a 1-hour speedboat ride from Ao Nang or by longtail boat from Ao Thalane pier.

There are also boat tours from Krabi that will take you to Koh Yao Noi but I actually recommend spending at least 2 or 3 days there.

One of the best things to do in Koh Yao Noi is to explore the many deserted beaches like Tha Khao beach, Klong Jark beach, and Pasai beach. In all honesty, they aren’t that great for swimming as the water is quite shallow but they are still beautiful and quiet.

a secluded beach surrounded by lush greenery and mountains on Koh Yao Noi

You can also rent a kayak or hire a boat to take you to the beaches along the north coast and the smaller islands of Ko Roi and Koh Kudu, both of which feature incredible views with jagged limestone rocks.

You can also take a day trip from Koh Yao Noi to Hong Island or James Bond Island since they aren’t that far away.

I also recommend taking a longtail boat to Koh Yao Yai (100 baht each way for a 10-minute ride) to visit the beautiful sandbar on Laem Had beach.

The cheapest way to get around is to rent a motorbike (200 baht) or bicycle (150 baht). Otherwise, you can hire a tuk tuk for about 100 baht per trip.

Looking for an authentic Thai island that’s not overrun by tourists yet? Koh Lanta is no doubt the best place to visit in Krabi. Plus, accommodations are very cheap, so you can’t go wrong.

You can easily get to Koh Lanta from Krabi Airport or from Ao Nang by taking a shared minivan which should take about 4 hours. If you’re coming from other islands like Phuket or Koh Phi Phi, you can get there by speedboat.

stairs leading to nui bay in koh lanta

The most popular thing to do in Koh Lanta is to rent a motorbike and explore all the secluded beaches. Some of my favorite Koh Lanta beaches are Bamboo Bay, Kantiang Beach, and Nui Bay.

Make sure to linger long enough for those epic sunsets that Koh Lanta is famous for.

You can also go on a kayaking and rock climbing tour on Koh Phee (Ghost Island) and Koh Talabeng, visit Koh Lanta Old Town, go on a snorkeling tour around Koh Rok Island , or take a 4 island and Emerald Cave tour .

I also recommend checking out the lighthouse at the national park for a beautiful panoramic view.

Fire Show on Ao Nang Beach

Although not the most beautiful, Ao Nang beach is the perfect spot for chilling and watching the sunset.

Every night at around 6 p.m locals perform some of the best fire shows I’ve seen for 30 minutes straight. The fire show is completely free but you’re welcome to give a tip.

Hello. The fire shows usually take place near the Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club, the spot where you take the boat to Railay. You can head to the beach right before sunset which is usually around 6 p.m. The show isn’t organized by any hotel in particular.

How to get to Krabi

Krabi is 170 kilometres away from Phuket and 800 kilometres south of Bangkok. There are many ways to get to Krabi from these Thai cities. It’s up to you to decide between air, road or sea based on your budget, comfort requirements, and time constraints.

Krabi has a small airport with flights from only four other countries: Malaysia, Singapore, China and Qatar. There are also domestic flights to and from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui.

Although flying is one of the most convenient options, flights here tend to be on the more expensive side. If you do decide to catch a flight from Bangkok to Krabi, remember that Bangkok has two different airports. If you’re arriving at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), make sure you’re not departing from Don Mueang (DMK) and vice versa.

A much more popular airport to fly into is Phuket (HKT). As it is a larger airport, it is served by a wider range of international airlines with regular flights. The journey from Phuket to Krabi will take you about two to four hours by land, depending on your transport of choice.

Minibuses and government buses, for example, are very affordable but take longer. If you’re not in any rush, you’ll save a ton of money and won’t have to worry about booking in advance as they run so frequently. If you decide on a private transfer or taxi, you’ll arrive at your accommodation directly but pay a whole lot more.

During high season, there are daily ferries and speedboats that cross the Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi. Though this is the shortest route, you’ll still need to factor in travel time to and from either piers.

Aside from flying, you can also catch a train or bus from Bangkok. Be prepared for a lengthy trip, as the full air-conditioned bus journey will take 12 hours.

While there is no train station in Krabi, you can depart from Hua Lamphong Station and go to Surat Thani, then catch a bus for the remainder of the distance. You’ll be able to book first-class, 12-hour sleeper trains or daytime trains that take eight hours.

What to expect in Krabi

Before visiting Thailand for the first time, you may worry about how you’re going to communicate. As Krabi is a top tourist destination, many locals working in the service and hospitality industries can speak basic English. If you can, it’s a nice gesture to at least learn hello and thank you in Thai.

You’ll use the currency Thai baht, which comes in both coins and banknotes. Most places only accept cash, though you can often use credit cards at more upscale restaurants.

You should always have enough cash on you for the day. Tipping is not required or expected here.

How to get around Krabi

Krabi has numerous transport options. A popular method to get yourself around is to rent a scooter. If you’re in town for a week, you can find discounted rates. Remember that people drive on the left side of the road in Thailand. Always be safe and responsible while driving a scooter, and wear a helmet!

If you’re hesitant about your driving skills, stick to taxis. Download the Grab app so you can book affordable rides whenever you need. Grab is the equivalent of Uber, which no longer operates in Southeast Asia as of this year. There are always promotions going on to give you a further discount on your rides.

You’ll become familiar with ferries and speedboats as a way to get between islands in Krabi. These are several daily services to Phuket, Koh Lanta and Phi Phi. Inexpensive boat taxis also run along the coast and are a scenic way to get between Ao Nang, Ton Sai, Railay, Phra Nang and Krabi Town.

The best time to visit Krabi

Although Krabi experiences warm weather year-round, you’ll want to avoid the summer monsoon season. The wettest months are August to October, so a trip during these months may ruin your plans for sun baking on the beach.

The perfect time to visit is from January to March. You’ll miss the tourist rush from Christmas and New Year’s Eve, as well as the Northern Hemisphere summer vacation crowd.

Not only that, but the conditions are near perfect, with very little rain and warm but mild temperatures.

Things to do in Krabi

Wondering what else there is to do other than lay at the beach all day? Here are some ideas for fun things to do in Krabi.

Shop at the Night Markets

One of the most lively things to do in Krabi at night is to head to Walking Street (known as Thanon Khon Dern in Thai).

A night market is held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from six o’clock. You’ll find a wide variety of items for sale, from handmade oyster pearl jewellery to classic souvenirs and T-shirts.

Of course, there will also be a ton of delicious street food vendors. There are always plastic chairs and tables to sit down at, so there’s no need to be in a rush.

When you’ve wandered long enough, enjoy a drink and watch a Thai musical performance at the central stage.

Soak in the Hot Springs

Less than an hour away from Krabi Town is the district of Klong Thom. There are a few hot springs in the area that are as beautiful as they are therapeutic.

Krabi Hot Springs is a serene spot under the shade of the tropical rainforest. It gets quite busy in the afternoons, so try to get there as early as possible. Many locals also enjoy going to Saline Hot Spring, the smaller of the two main areas.

Swim at the Emerald Pool

Close by the Krabi Hot Springs in the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park is the magnificent Emerald Pool . Photos simply cannot do the crystal-clear water justice.

You’ll need to walk over a kilometre to reach the stunning mineral pool, but it’s absolutely worth the trek. Again, come as early as you can to beat the crowds and have the most peaceful experience.

Places to visit in Krabi

Tiger cave temple.

This Buddhist temple is only 10 kilometres northeast of Krabi Town. The strenuous 1,237 steps to reach the summit may turn some people away, but the view of nearby Krabi is beautifully rewarding.

A large, golden Buddha statue will greet you once you make it to the top. Wat Tham Suea, as it’s known in Thai, was named for the tiger paw prints once found in the cave.

Railay Beach

Railay is one of Krabi’s most iconic beach areas and only accessible by boat from Ao Nang. Fortunately, the boats depart hourly and take only 15 minutes.

The limestone cliffs attract rock climbers, and the serene beaches draw in anyone looking for a relaxing, sunny atmosphere. With a jungle right by the sand, be on the lookout for many playful yet sneaky monkeys.

Phra Nang Beach

Further down from Railay Beach is the gorgeous Phra Nang. More limestone cliffs and caves create a picturesque backdrop during your swim.

It’s a wonderful place to rent a kayak and go snorkelling. If you’d like to go scuba diving, there are nearby centres where you can book an instructor.

What to eat in Krabi

Thailand is a haven for foodies , and Krabi is no exception. You’ll have no trouble finding great restaurants and vendors that serve fresh fruit, spicy curries and grilled meats. Many of the street food dishes cost only 30 to 60 baht, so with such affordable prices, why not eat as much as you want?

Here are three foods you must sample while in Krabi:

Pad Thai: Of course, this classic Thai dish had to be mentioned! There’s no need to overpay at fancy restaurants, as the most delicious pad Thai can be found at street vendors. There are varieties for everyone, including shrimp, chicken and vegetarian.

Som tam : After eating your weight in fried noodles, a light, fresh meal may be just what you need. This savoury green papaya salad is a local favourite and is available everywhere. Although it’s served cold, it has a spicy kick to it.

Mango sticky rice: One of Thailand’s most popular traditional desserts is just what the name suggests. It’s a deliciously sweet yet healthy post-dinner treat that you’ll never get sick of.

Where to stay in Krabi

While you may want to stay on many of Krabi’s gorgeous islands too, we’ve picked out some of the best hotels and hostels on the mainland for you. Here are a few recommendations to help you narrow down where to stay in Krabi.

Bliss Resort is a welcoming accommodation that’s right along the tranquil Klong Muang Beach. You’ll have access to the hotel’s private beach area, mere steps from your door.

The rooms are industrial and modern but incorporate warm and cosy decor. If you want to stay somewhere peaceful but not too far from Krabi Town, this resort will be perfect for you.

Whether you’re travelling solo or with friends, Pak-Up Hostel is the best budget-friendly accommodation in Krabi Town. It’s on the corner of the busy Thanon Utarakit road, a prime location to begin exploring and meeting fellow travellers.

Their bar area has great music, a pool table, and a free barbecue every night. Although there’s such a lively social scene, all dorms and double rooms at Pak-Up are incredibly clean.

If a garden oasis retreat is more your style, you’ll fall in love with Phanom Bencha Mountain Resort . This resort is a special and harmonious place, located 20 kilometres north of Krabi Town at the foothills of a national park.

The standard and two-bedroom bungalows are surrounded by fruit trees and tropical fauna. A stay here gives you the opportunity to go on a nighttime rainforest trek to see the different forms of wildlife.

Tours to do in Krabi

With so many island hopping tours available, how is anyone to choose between them all? Here’s a rundown of some of the best-rated island tours to help you pick the one that’s right for you.

A six-hour sunset cruise allows you to explore five islands along the coast of Krabi. You’ll have snorkelling gear and stand-up paddle boards provided, with plenty of opportunities to have a relaxing swim.

The cruise also has a cocktail bar on board and offers a Thai buffet for dinner (including vegetarian options). With all of this included and more, you’re guaranteed an enjoyable day.

For those seeking adventurous things to do in Krabi, Hong by Starlight runs a sea cave kayaking tour. Paddle through the limestone caves and emerald lagoons of Phang Nga Bay with an experienced guide.

The tour lasts 10 hours, so you can experience the area during the daytime, sunset, and under the moonlight.

If you want to explore the land instead, why not try a beginner’s rock climbing tour on Railay Beach ? Challenge yourself on Krabi’s famous limestone rocks and be rewarded with once-in-a-lifetime scenic views.

Suitable for all ages and skill levels, this four-hour experience is one you won’t soon forget.

KRABI, THAILAND - Rock climbers climbing on Railay beach in Krabi, Thailand. Railay beach is one of the most popular rock climbing locations in Asia.

Day trips from Krabi

While the Phi Phi Islands are technically part of Krabi Province, a 90-minute ferry ride is required to get there. Therefore, you should dedicate an entire day to exploring this beautiful island group.

If you’re not sure which spots to visit, you might like to opt for an early-bird speedboat tour run by Sea Eagle. Leave at sunrise, be taken to several of Phi Phi’s most impressive islands, and enjoy lunch at a cliff-side restaurant.

This excursion lasts all day and you’ll be dropped back off in Krabi by the late afternoon.

Krabi, Thailand: A Complete Travel Guide

Updated: Sep 11, 2023

The province of Krabi is located on southern Thailand’s west coast. Home to impressive limestone cliffs, dense mangrove forests, white sand beaches, and more than 100 offshore islands, Krabi is one of Thailand’s most beautiful beach destinations. But since it covers quite a large area, some attractions require a bit of traveling. In our experience, Ao Nang is the best place to base yourself, as it offers opportunities for exploring the mainland as well as island hopping. In this travel guide, we share 10 of the best things to do in Krabi as well as great places to stay, eat, and drink.

The estuarine town of KRABI is both provincial capital and major hub for onward travel to some of the region’s most popular islands and beaches, including Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta, Ao Nang, Klong Muang and Laem Phra Nang (Railay). So efficient are the transport links that you don’t really need to stop here, but it also makes an appealing base, strung out along the west bank of the Krabi estuary, with mangrove-lined shorelines to the east, craggy limestone outcrops on every horizon, and plenty of guesthouses. The beaches of Ao Nang and Railay are both within 45 minutes of town, and other nearby attractions include the mangrove swamps and Ko Klang peninsula across the estuary, the dramatically sited Tiger Cave Temple at Wat Tham Seua and Khao Phanom Bencha National Park. A number of organized day-trips in the Krabi area, including snorkelling and kayaking excursions, are available (see Activities around Krabi, Ao Nang and Laem Phra Nang).

Mangrove tours

Life in a mangrove swamp.

Krabi town has no unmissable sights, but is small enough for a pleasant stroll around its main landmarks. Its chief attraction is its setting, and a good way to appreciate this is to follow the paved riverside walkway down to the fishing port, about 800m south of Tha Chao Fa; several hotels capitalize on the views here, across to mangrove-ringed Ko Klang, and towards the southern end the walkway borders the municipal Thara Park.

Inland, in the centre of town, you can’t fail to notice the bizarre sculptures of hulking anthropoid apes clutching two sets of traffic lights apiece at the Thanon Maharat/Soi 10 crossroads. They are meant to represent Krabi’s most famous ancestors, the tailless Siamopithecus oceanus, whose forty-million-year-old remains were found in a lignite mine in the south of the province and are believed by scientists to be among the earliest examples worldwide of the ape-to-human evolutionary process.

Chiang Mai offers a balmy escape from Bangkok’s humidity. Regarded as the cultural heart of the country, come here for nature, lovely Lanna-style temples, museums and the infamous night bazaar.

A boat trip through the eerily scenic mangrove-lined channels of the Krabi estuary is a fun way to gain a different perspective on the area. As well as a close-up view of the weird creatures that inhabit the swamps, you’ll get to visit a riverside cave or two. Tours are best organized directly with the longtail boatmen who hang around Krabi’s two piers and the surrounding streets, but can also be arranged through most tour agents.

The estuary’s most famous features are the twin limestone outcrops known as Khao Kanab Nam, which rise a hundred metres above the water from opposite sides of the Krabi River near the Maritime Park and Spa Resort and are so distinctive that they’ve become the symbol of Krabi. One of the twin karsts hides caves, which can be explored – many skeletons have been found here over the centuries, thought to be those of immigrants who got stranded by a flood before reaching the mainland. You can also choose to visit the Muslim island of Ko Klang.

Mangrove swamps are at their creepiest at low tide, when their aerial roots are fully exposed to form gnarled and knotted archways above the muddy banks. Not only are these roots essential parts of the tree’s breathing apparatus, they also reclaim land for future mangroves, trapping and accumulating water-borne debris into which the metre-long mangrove seedlings can fall. In this way, mangrove swamps also fulfil a vital ecological function: stabilizing shifting mud and protecting coastlines from erosion and the impact of tropical storms.

Mangrove swamp mud harbours some interesting creatures too, like the instantly recognizable fiddler crab, named after the male’s single outsized reddish claw, which it brandishes for communication and defence purposes; the claw is so powerful it could open a can of baked beans. If you keep your eyes peeled you should be able to make out a few mudskippers. These specially adapted fish can absorb atmospheric oxygen through their skins as long as they keep their outsides damp, which is why they spend so much time slithering around in the sludge; they move in tiny hops by flicking their tails, aided by their extra-strong pectoral fins. You might well also come across kingfishers and white-bellied sea eagles, or even a crab-eating macaque.

Though the Krabi mangroves have not escaped the environmentally damaging attentions of invasive industry, or the cutting down of the bigger trees to make commercial charcoal, around fifteen percent of the Andaman coastline is still fringed with mangrove forest, the healthiest concentration of this rich, complex ecosystem in Thailand.

Krabi travel blog: When is the best time to go to Krabi?

Krabi is located in the hot tropical region of Thailand where outdoor temperatures rarely go below 27 degrees Celsius. This region has only two main seasons: The dry season (from December to May) and the rainy season (from June to November).

travel guide to krabi

The best time to visit Krabi is in late January to March, when the outdoor temperatures are acceptable, quite pleasant, the sky is clear and avoid the peak months of Christmas and New Year. In contrast, many visitors prefer to come in the rainy season, simply when Krabi is very cool and also less touristy.

Krabi travel guide: Getting to Krabi

If you going from Vietnam, there is currently no direct flight to Krabi but still have to transit in Bangkok. From Bangkok, there are many ways to get to Krabi such as plane, train or bus. In the above ways, the plane and bus are more popular because the train looks quite bad but more expensive than the bus. During my last trip, I took a Nok Air flight from Bangkok to Krabi, when return to Bangkok I took the bus.

I fly with Nok Air, the airline I think is very good because of the quality of service, cheap price and free checked baggage up to 15kg, they also serve a light meal. Nok Air is based at Don Muaeng airport, but if you fly with this airline, you can refer to the article on how to getting around Bangkok to know how to go from central Bangkok to Don Mueang Airport. If you buy cheap tickets of Nok Air to Krabi, the ticket price is only 1,000 Baht. In addition to Nok Air, there are many other airlines with routes to Krabi such as Air Asia, Thai Airways, etc. You should check the fare often and early to hunt cheap tickets.

Krabi-island-thailand3

If you traveling by plane, you will landing at Krabi Airport, about 20km from Krabi Town and 25km from Ao Nang Beach. To getting from the airport to the above two locations, the best way is that you take the shuttle bus with the corresponding fare of 90 Baht to Krabi town and 150 Baht to Ao Nang, the shuttle buses park right outside the door of the airport terminal. Note that when you come to Krabi and want to take the boat to Koh Phi Phi island, you can buy tickets of the travel agency right at the airport, then take the bus to the ferry pier. The bus from the airport will not go straight to the pier but take you to the travel agency office in the center of Krabi, from here you take a break for a while, close to the departure time of ferry they will take you to the pier by Songthaew.

travel guide to krabi

Bus in Thailand is big car, very convenient and good service, bus tickets can be bought in advance via the website https://12go.asia/en , priced at over 600 Baht and can be reserved seat. Return from Krabi by bus you can buy tickets directly from your hotel at 600 Baht/way. There is air conditioning, warm blankets on the bus, free snacks are two boxes of milk, water and cakes. It takes about 12 hours to traveling, departure time you can free to choose, in the middle of the road they also serve a free meal. Although the meal is not very good for me because of Islam food is not suitable, but I appreciate their service quality, completeness and comfort. When taking the bus, I choose the night bus running from 4:40pm and arrive Bangkok at 5pm, sleeping on the bus to save a night at the hotel.

Krabi blog: How to get around Krabi?

The most convenient means of transportation on the island and getting around the main areas is by motorbike. You can rent a motorbike right at your hotel at the price of 150 Baht/day, very cheap, add more fuel, you can riding comfortably. If you buy a tour, usually the tour agents will pick you up at the hotel, and after the tour they also will take you your hotel.

When getting from Krabi airport if you buy bus tickets to go to the pier to get to Koh Phi Phi island, the bus will take you to Krabi Town first and drop you right at the transport company office, then the bus continues take the others to Ao Nang. You stay here for a while until before the ferry runs, they will have Songthaew to take you to the pier (free). Ferry tickets to Koh Phi Phi you can buy at the airport is also OK, price at 400 Baht/way and round-trip is 700 Baht but the return ferry trip will take you to the wharf in Krabi Town. If when you return from Phi Phi and you stay in Ao Nang, you should only buy one-way tickets for the departure trip, and for the return trip you can buy right on the island only 300 Baht/return-trip that go straight to Ao Nang. There are Songthaew or minibus at every pier, you can bargain freely, do not hear any people, they often say incorrectly.

In addition to the two main areas above, tourists come to Krabi often choose to spend a few nights on Koh Phi Phi island or Railay beach. On Phi Phi island, the room rate is a bit higher than in Ao Nang, the hotels are located near the pier, so it is quite convenient. I stayed at the Marine House hostel ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) , the room rate is good on the island, like a stilt house, a beautiful clean wooden room, a 5-minute walk to the pier. And Railay beach is an isolated area you have to take a boat if you want to stay here, this area many visitors like because there is a beautiful beach to watch the sunset.

Krabi trip blog: What to eat in Krabi?

In Krabi Town in the evening you can go to the night market for eating and drinking, during the day there are also quite a lot of restaurants open with pretty good food right near the night market area near the lake. In general, the food in Krabi are similar to those in Bangkok, the most popular is still Pad Thai.

krabi food

If you stay in Ao Nang, you will have to ride a little far away if you want to have many options and cheap. In general, Western food, fast food such as Mc Donald, KFC, Burger King have a lot on the main street in Ao Nang, but traveling, after get boring with local food, then you should eat fast food. The streetfood stalls in Ao Nang you can find on the main street perpendicular to Ao Nang Beach (at the end of Ao Nang Beach, turn left), passing Mc Donald is a short distance is an area with quite a lot of restaurants on the right. Another area is near Wang Sai Seafood , a row with lots of good streetfood restaurants and good prices, but this area is mostly bustling at night.

Krabi Town: In the daytime in Krabi town (the center of the town) is quite peaceful, before I go, I thought Krabi was just a small village, but when I came here, it was different, quite bustling, many shops, especially there are many nice hostels combine cafes. In the evening you can walking around the lake (which looks like a long but quite small and narrow river), duck pedal boat, explore the crowded and interesting night market. The roads in the town are as wide and as many vehicles as the medium-size cities, it’s gentle and quiet.

Discover all tours and activities in Krabi here.

I just experienced the 4 Islands Tour, the tour pick up me from the hotel at 9am and returned at 3pm, generally they would take you to some islands near Krabi by Longtail boat, not much special things compare to the island tours in Vietnam like Binh Ba island tour or Cu Lao Cham island tour. These islands are very small, not so beautiful, you can snorkeling to watch corals, corals here are also quite beautiful, and the beach is normal (maybe because of I had been to the Maldives, so I see any island is ugly now, LOL!). Anyway, with the tour price of 600 Baht/person with pick up and drop off service and have fun for all day like that is too good already.

longtail boats in krabi thailand with travel tips

So if you’re planning a trip to explore the relatively lesser known province of Krabi (or visiting Thailand for the first time), you’ve come to the right place! We’re sharing some essential and useful travel tips you should know before visiting. Not only will these tips save you time and money, but they’ll also take the stress out of planning your trip!

Things to Know Before You Travel to Krabi

Is krabi worth visiting.

If you’ve always wanted to travel to Thailand, but weren’t too keen on battling the sea of tourists in Bangkok and Phuket, then Krabi is a great travel option. It may not be as serene and peaceful as Khao Sok National Park or have the beautiful beaches Koh Phangan is known for.

But it does strike a great balance between experiencing the hustle and bustle of Thai culture, whilst also having the option of escaping to more tranquil natural surroundings. So if this is what you’re looking for, Krabi is oh-so worth visiting!

Related Guide: If you love adventure, hiking and exploring the great outdoors like us, then you’ll really love Krabi. In that case, after reading our top travel tips, make sure to check out our Krabi 3 day itinerary to find the best hikes and beaches to explore.

What is Krabi Most Well-Known For?

Krabi is most well-known for its majestic limestone cliffs, attracting rock climbers from all over the world attempting to conquer the cliffs of Ton Sai Beach and Railay Beach.

It’s also popular for island hopping. From Krabi, you can easily find day trips to see Phi Phi Island , Hong Island , Bamboo Island and the Four Islands (Phra Nang Beach, Tup Island, Chicken Island and Poda Island).

travel tips for travelling in krabi thailand

Island Day Trips from Krabi

Island day trips (or island hopping) is one of the top things to do in Krabi. But we’re going to be honest- it gets crowded. Especially during peak season.

The only way to beat the crowds is to go really early and to book a private tour. Chartering your own private boat can cost an arm and a leg in most countries. But luckily not in Thailand!

You can easily charter your own boat for under €50 ($55) per person if you’re traveling in a group of 4. Here are the options:

  • From Krabi: Private luxury long tail boat island hopping tour
  • From Ao Nang or Krabi: Private island hopping tour in a luxury long tail boat

You can also go scuba diving around Krabi. If you want to learn how to get scuba diving certified, find out what to expect in our Scuba Diving Beginners guide.

7 Top Travel Tips for Krabi, Thailand

1. daily budget for krabi.

Our Krabi travel tips guide would be incomplete without providing a daily budget guideline. Excluding accommodation and flights to Krabi, we estimate:

  • Western cuisine: Around €50 ($55) per person for 3 meals, snacks and drinks
  • Thai cuisine: Around €25 ($27) per person for 3 meals, snacks and drinks

Like we mentioned in our  Hong Kong budget travel tips and culture guide, eating local food will save you a lot of money when travelling to most countries. But we understand that some of you may have food allergies or particular dietary requirements, so we thought it would be helpful to share with you the budget for eating western cuisine too.

We are both lucky in that we don’t have any food allergies, so we generally just follow the “see food” diet.

If you love massages like us (or a pedicure if you’re Michael), budget another €7 – €9 ($8 to $10) for a 60 minute massage.

2. Money and Banking Travel Tips in Krabi

Should you buy forex before travelling to thailand.

The Thai Baht is the official currency of Thailand. You get a lot of bang for your buck if you’re holding American Dollars, the British Pound or the Euro (which gets you around 39 Thai Baht per Euro depending on the exchange rate).

Although Thailand is extremely tourist friendly, it is not card friendly at all. It is best to always have cash on you as most places (including some hotels) will charge you an extra 3% fee on your bill if you pay by card.

travel tip for withdrawing money in krabi thailand by ATMs

You can also draw cash when you’re in Thailand, but the withdrawal fees are not cheap. The withdrawal fee is 220 Thai Baht (or €6 or $7) per withdrawal. All the ATM’s charge the same withdrawal fee except AEON, which is slightly cheaper at 150 Thai Baht (or €4 or $5).

The only downside is that there aren’t many AEON ATM’s around. They’re normally located at a local mall outside the main town area. Draw as much as you feel comfortable carrying (put some in your hotel safe) since you pay per withdrawal and NOT per amount.

If you’re interested in how we always get the best exchange rate buying foreign currency for our travels (and free cash withdrawals), read our Revolut travel card guide.

3. Getting a SIM Card in Thailand

How much do sim cards cost in thailand.

Another top money saving travel tip for Krabi is to avoid high roaming charges.

We highly recommend buying a tourist SIM card when you arrive in Thailand. Internet is super fast and reliable in Thailand, so you won’t be disappointed.

You can easily buy one at any 7 Eleven, network operator’s store or even at the airport.

If you are able to delay that post-flight internet craving, you can save some money by NOT buying your SIM card at the airport. Vendors usually add a premium at the airports to take advantage of internet-deprived travellers. So hold off just a little longer if possible.

We bought the TrueMove Tourist SIM card for 699 Thai Baht (under €18 or $20). You get unlimited data with this SIM and it is valid for 15 days.

If you’re not staying so long, there is also an 8 day option that costs 499 Thai Baht (under €11 or $12). If you’re not sure how long you’re staying, you can always buy the cheaper option and top up later. Topping up will extend your SIM’s ‘expiry date’.

Besides money, make sure you bring your passport or identity card when buying your SIM card in Thailand. The store or vendor will need it for the mandatory SIM card registration.

e-SIMs in Thailand

Another way to get a tourist SIM card in Thailand is to use an e-SIM. It’s a bit more expensive, but oh-so-convenient. Everything is done online and the SIM is activated instantly.

A 7-day eSIM is the cheapest with only 1GB of data. This should be sufficient if you’re just using it for Google Maps, finding restaurants or checking e-mails. But you can also buy a 30-day eSIM with more data (3GB to 20GB) on SimLocal .

4. Health and Hygiene

Is tap water safe to drink in thailand.

No, don’t attempt it even if you think you have an invincible stomach. Always drink boiled or treated water.

As people who promote eco-travel and environmental sustainability, it is very hard for us to recommend buying bottled water. But there are just some places that you travel to, where tap water is not drinkable and bottled water is the only option.

In this case, we recommend that if you do buy bottled water, keep the bottle and ask for a refill when you go to restaurants or hotels where they provide safe drinking water. This will significantly help minimise the amount of plastic waste created.

can you drink tap water in thailand

In Koh Phangan , we found these green Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration machines where you can refill your bottles for just 1 Thai Baht per litre (basically free).

This was the best discovery on our trip. Not only do you reduce tons of plastic waste, it is also super affordable.

For us personally, it was encouraging to see developing countries like Thailand implementing environmentally friendly initiatives in an effort to protect their country’s natural beauty.

The bad news is that we didn’t find any of these machines in Krabi…

5. Transport in Krabi

It is really easy to get around in Krabi. The main town area is usually small enough that everything is within walking distance. But if you want to venture out a bit, there are public buses, taxis and tuk tuks available.

public bus in krabi and aonang

You could also opt for the more adventurous mode of transport and rent a scooter. This is usually our most preferred mode of transport as we like to feel the wind in our hair and wander around at a leisurely pace.

How To Get To Krabi, Thailand

Thailand may be a developing country, but its public transport system is extensive and really affordable too. You can easily get from Bangkok or Phuket to Krabi by bus, train or even by ferry. You can literally pick and choose depending on your budget and how much time you have.

Here are some of the most popular ways to get to Krabi:

  • Phuket to Krabi
  • Bus from Bangkok to Krabi
  • From Koh Lanta to Krabi
  • Chiang Mai to Krabi
  • From Koh Phi Phi to Krabi

If it’s your first time in Thailand, make sure to read our Thailand Public Transportation guide so you know what to expect. If you’re flying directly into Krabi Airport, here are some airport transfer options for you:

  • Krabi Airport transfer via Shared Van
  • Private transfer from Krabi Airport

Is It Safe To Rent A Motorcycle in Thailand?

We’ve heard our fair share of horrible scooter accidents in South East Asia, but we still believe it is an amazing and affordable way to travel and experience the country like a local.

We are not regular motorcycle riders (we don’t even have a motorcycle licence), but we do have a driver’s licence, wear helmets and make sure to always drive at a safe speed (don’t drink and drive).

We’ve rode scooters in Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand and have had a great experience in all those countries.

travel tips for krabi scooter rentals

Tips for Motorcycle Rentals in Krabi

Our top travel tip for renting scooters in Krabi (or anywhere in South East Asia) is to test drive the bike around the vicinity of the shop you rented from to check if everything works. Lights, brakes, diesel gauge, basically all the important stuff before you get on your way.

Also, wear sunnies during your ride so the wind doesn’t dry your eye balls out. Not only will you look extra cool, but you’ll have a much better riding experience when you don’t have to squint your way through it.

In Krabi or Aonang, you can rent a scooter for 200 Thai Baht (under €6 or $7) per day. Prices are pretty standardized so don’t worry about ‘being taken for a ride’ with inflated prices. It costs around 100 (under €3 or $4) Thai Baht to refill the scooter from empty to full.

rent scooter in thailand safety tips

What You Need to Rent a Motorcycle or Scooter

  • Your passport (they will keep this until you return the bike)
  • Show them your drivers or motorbike licence
  • No cash deposit required

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Travel insurance will protect you against injury, illness, theft and even trip cancellation. It’s comprehensive cover in case anything goes wrong. We never go on a trip without it as we’ve had to use it many times in the past. Here are our favourite companies that offer the best value and service:

  • SafetyWing  (best for everyone)
  • AXA  (for US residents)
  • Outbacker  (for UK residents)
  • Allianz  (for Germany residents)

6. Where to Stay in Krabi

We chose to stay at Ao Nang Beach because we are complete beach bums and ocean lovers. It’s a short 20 minute scooter ride from Krabi town. We preferred it because it was closer to Railay Beach and the stunning Tab Kak Hang Nak Nature Trail, which we explored on our 3 day Krabi itinerary .

For accommodation, anywhere within walking distance to the main road 4203 (parallel to the beach) is central.

We wouldn’t recommend wandering too far off beyond Nemo2 Resort because tour transfers (which are usually included in tour or ferry packages) will not venture beyond that hotel to come collect you.

If you aren’t a light packer, that means you may need to drag your luggage along the side of the road under the blazing sun and risk a T-shirt tan.

Avani Aonang Cliff Krabi Resort

In Aonang, we stayed at the  Avani Aonang Cliff Krabi Resort . We loved it because it is a heavenly sanctuary from all the hustle and bustle on the streets.

Aonang Cliff Beach Resort view

The hotel also has the most amazing views in Aonang because it is embedded into the cliffside facing the ocean. The cherry on top is that you can enjoy this view from their magnificent infinity pool while enjoying a cocktail or two.

Best hotel to stay in Aonang

Overall, it’s a great accommodation option whether you are a couple, a family or just looking to celebrate a special occasion.

For families with young toddlers, there is a dedicated play area in the hotel so the parents can go get a well-deserved break at the spa. There’s also a gym if you’ve indulged too much on delicious Thai cuisine.

7. Best Time to Visit Krabi

The best time to visit Krabi is between November and April, outside of the monsoon season.

Bear in mind that it will be more expensive travelling during this period, as this is typically their peak travel season, and for good reason. Some activities such as visiting the Blue Pool (part of Emerald Pool) and diving around the Similan Islands are not open for tourists from May to the end of October.

Although it may be an inconvenience for tourists, it’s good that these unique, natural ecosystems are given a 6 month break from thousands of visiting tourists so that they can remain healthy.

Avoid the Tourist Crowds in Thailand

Thailand is one of our favourite countries to travel to. We love how friendly the locals are, their delicious food and it is an absolute paradise for outdoor enthusiasts like ourselves.

The only downside to Thailand is that some places are incredibly touristy, which can dampen the travel experience. That’s why we always search for less touristy, hidden gems to explore.

tips on travelling to krabi

If you have the same travel style, then you should make a stop at Khao Sok National Park . This little gem gets compared to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, but without the tourist hordes. It is one of the most majestic and unique landscapes we’ve seen in Thailand.

If you’re more about that beach life, then find the best beaches in Koh Phangan with our guide.
