Andrew Zimmern shares his Atlanta favorites on his new Travel Channel show
Photograph by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images for Food & Wine
Chef, world traveler, and television personality Andrew Zimmern recently launched the first season of his latest travel and food show, The Zimmern List , on the Travel Channel. During the fifth episode , which premiered on the cable network last week, he eats his way across Atlanta, which he calls “a city with a dozen different food personalities.”
His first stop is old-school Southern: Mary Mac’s Tea Room . He half-jokes he wants a table for one but food for three—and proceeds to order fried chicken, collard greens, tomato pie, and dumplings, among other things. His favorite is the fried green tomatoes, which he calls “one of life’s greatest pleasures.”
Zimmern hits the other end of the Southern food spectrum at Miller Union , calling it “Southern cooking at the peak of its expression” and gushes over chef Steven Satterfield’s boiled peanut and field pea salad.
He next descends on upscale Jewish deli the General Muir and raves about the chopped chicken liver, calling it one of the few perfect versions he’s encountered. He also finds an ideal burger—perhaps the best in the country, he says: the world-famous Ghetto Burger at Ann’s Snack Bar in Kirkwood.
From there, Zimmern heads to “the hottest market in all of America,” Ponce City Market, where he tries the spicy pork buns at Simply Seoul ( which unfortunately closed earlier this year ), Georgia coastal oysters at W.H. Stiles Fish Camp , and a Cuban sandwich at El Super Pan .
Photograph by Angie Mosier
Zimmern ends his Atlanta culinary tour at the one-of-a-kind Gunshow , Kevin Gillespie’s format-busting spot where “cooks have free reign to make whatever they like and then the cooks themselves bring the food to the table and convince you to order what they made.”
Zimmern’s takeaway? “Atlanta isn’t easily defined, and I think the more you try to define it, the less you’re going to enjoy it. So when you come down to Atlanta, just live it.”
Want to see the episode? The next re-airing is Tuesday, June 26 at 9:30 p.m.

Atlanta doesn’t settle for doing anything the way it’s always been done.
We didn’t create freedom, soda, grits or hospitality—we elevated them into something sacred. We didn’t invent hip-hop—we just took it to a whole different level.
We raise the bar, because we don’t look to others for inspiration. Instead we look ahead to our own future and see our influence on everything as we move.
And that small difference doesn’t just set us apart. It defines us.
Atlanta. On A Different Level.

10 things to know before visiting Atlanta
May 26, 2024 • 6 min read
Discover the power of activism at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights © wayfarerlife / Shutterstock
My Atlanta story began in 1990, when my parents moved their young family to the metro area so they could pursue new job opportunities. It was an exciting time to grow up in the unofficial capital of the South . Atlanta’s first Black mayor, Maynard Jackson, was in his third and final term; local leaders were working on their successful bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympics; and Freaknik, the biggest college party for historically Black college and university (HBCU) students, had already gained a national reputation.
As an adult I’ve moved away from home a few times, but this city always seems to draw me back in. I find new ways to fall in love with Atlanta every time I move back. If you’re planning a visit, here are a few insider tips to help you navigate our rules, culture and even the streets.
1. Plan to spend at least three days in the A
It’ll take a first-time visitor at least two days to see all the typical sites, starting with Atlanta’s downtown tourist district – home to the Georgia Aquarium , the World of Coca-Cola museum and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights , all within the same square. Centennial Olympic Park is a short walk away. The King Historic District is about a five-minute drive from there, but given the legacies of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King , it needs time to absorb it all. After that, visitors can choose their own adventure by exploring Atlanta's neighborhoods; strolling along the Beltline, a 22-mile multi-use trail; or getting a seat at one of Atlanta’s award-winning restaurants.
Add these top experiences to your Atlanta itinerary .
2. Know the pros and cons of each season
Summertime is filled with incredible festivals and outdoor celebrations, but brace yourself for 90°F (32°C) temperatures and sweltering humidity. Winters are mild, but there’s considerably less to do in Atlanta since Southerners don’t appreciate cold weather of any kind. Spring and fall are magical times in the city, but check with your allergist first. Atlanta gets blanketed in pollen, particularly in the spring thanks to our abundant tree cover, but at least we can all admire the blooming dogwood trees while we sneeze.
3. Prepare to see and be seen in Atlanta
Atlanta doesn’t believe partying should be limited to the night. Day parties and restaurants with a lounge atmosphere – a term one website aptly called the clubstaurant – are plentiful. This style may be strange to some visitors. The popular TikTok food critic Keith Lee was shocked by the lack of hospitality at some of these businesses. But to enjoy them like a local, go for the vibes, not for traditional restaurant service.
4. Sunday booze sales can be confusing
Southern cities have a complicated relationship with alcohol sales on Sunday, and Atlanta is no different. It can be tough to keep track of the regulations, especially when ordinances change from county to county. If you’re in the city limits of Atlanta, you can order a Sunday morning mimosa or bloody mary at brunch beginning at 11am. If you’re outside of Atlanta/Fulton County, be aware that the local laws may be different.
5. Getting around without a car is challenging
MARTA is Atlanta’s public transportation system, and it’s generally reliable and safe. Many people use the train’s red and yellow lines to get to and from the airport, but the train system isn’t robust enough to take locals or visitors to all of the area’s best offerings, which are sprawled across a large metro area. Renting a car or using rideshare apps are your best options. Local politicians haven’t managed to keep up with infrastructure to support the city’s rapidly growing population, so spontaneous traffic jams occur regularly. Make sure you plan ahead for any timed entries.
Navigate like a local with these tips for getting around .
6. Atlanta has all the Peachtree Streets
Whoever was in charge of naming streets in Atlanta seemed to run out of ideas. You’ll notice a lot of roads are named after peach trees. On one hand, it’s cute because Georgia is known as the peach state, but the charm tends to wear off quickly. At last count, 71 roads in Atlanta have Peachtree in the name. It can get confusing quickly, so pay attention to the details to see if you’re looking for Peachtree Street, Road, or Way.
7. Fill your soul with local cuisine
You can’t come to the South without filling up on soul food, and Atlanta has some iconic options for you. Look out for local favorites such as shrimp and grits, and fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese. Then try new classics like lemon pepper wings. For eclectic international offerings, try the food hall at Ponce City Market, Buford Highway Farmers Market or East Atlanta Village.
Other states may disagree, but here, we embrace the diner food chain Waffle House. It was founded in Avondale Estates, a suburb of Atlanta, after all. Most people have their hash brown order memorized, whether it’s smothered (with sautéed onions), covered (in melted cheese), diced (with chopped tomatoes) or capped (with mushrooms).
8. Saying Hotlanta will get you the side eye
Yes, we know Atlanta gets hot in the summertime, and yes, we also know our city is poppin’ with fun things to do all year long. But neither of those truths would ever warrant someone calling the city Hotlanta. The nickname may have been acceptable when it was first coined in the 20th century, but today it will instantly label you as an outsider. Casual nicknames locals prefer are “the A,” and “A-T-L.” If you’re looking for more high-brow nicknames, The Gate City and the City in a Forest also apply, but are not typically used in casual conversation.
9. Black culture is intrinsically connected to Atlanta
Atlanta has the second largest population of Black Americans in the US , behind New York City. But that’s not the only reason why the Black community sees Atlanta as a central city for the culture. It's also home to four HBCUs and Tyler Perry Studios, and has deep roots in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. Atlanta has remained a major hub for hip hop, from early pioneers such as Frank Ski and Kilo Ali and legends like OutKast, Ludacris and T.I. to fresh talents including Two Chains, Gucci, Future and 21 Savage.
10. Atlanta embraces our LGBTQ+ community
Atlanta is also a hub for the Black queer community, and has been for at least two decades. Every Labor Day weekend the community comes together to celebrate Atlanta Black Pride . But there are opportunities to celebrate all year long, whether it’s during Atlanta Pride in October, or at any of the city’s gay bars and clubs, including the established favorites, Bulldogs and My Sister’s Room .

The Best Restaurants in Atlanta for Every Budget
If you consider yourself a serious foodie, you have to check out these top restaurants, from classic to cutting-edge, on Atlanta's trendy restaurant scene. This booming — and sophisticated — Southern city should be on your must-visit list for these great food options from affordable to pricey.
A Southern City Built on Great Food
Atlanta is home to a powerhouse contingent of James Beard-nominated (and prize-winning) chefs and has become a foodie destination for fans of chef TV and local stars like Kevin Gillespie, Linton Hopkins, Steven Satterfield and many more. And from the diverse eats on the internationally focused Buford Highway to the elevated dining at Bacchanalia , Atlanta has a lot to offer for fans of great affordable cuisine and also a high-end, chef-driven dining experience. So don't think shrimp and grits and meat and three are the only game in town. Atlanta has amazing pho, Korean BBQ and sushi if you know the right place to look.

Nobu Atlanta
Some of the best sushi in Atlanta is served at the Buckhead iteration of Japanese star chef Nobu Matsuhisa's eponymous restaurant. Nobu opened his first world-class sushi restaurant in New York City in 1994 alongside partner and actor Robert De Niro. The restaurants are celeb favorites with the likes of Madonna, Bill Clinton and Cindy Crawford. The Atlanta location, in the tony Buckhead neighborhood, is conveniently attached to the city's designer-centric Phipps Plaza shopping center (featuring Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Celine, Gucci and Balmain among other high-end boutiques) and the Citizens Market food hall.
The bustling Nobu Atlanta dining room is warm and inviting with a golden backlit white onyx bar and a glamorous, moody vibe. The scene is classic Atlanta: diverse and with a vibrant bar scene. (Reservations can be very hard to come by, so dining at the bar is a good option.) Fish is sourced from Tokyo's Toyusu fish market and some domestic purveyors and showcases Nobu's time spent cooking in Peru with an inventive mix of the freshest fish and complex flavors. Catering to a local preference for shellfish, the Nobu Atlanta features ATL exclusives including Lobster "Dynamite" and Hawaiian Prawns in Garlic Soy Butter and an exceedingly Southern dish, Crispy Okra with Spicy Tozasu. Menu highlights include a smooth-as-silk Nobu Old-Fashioned with Torres Magdala orange liqueur, the perfect twist-on-a-classic to start the meal. Standouts include the yellowtail jalapeño combining delicate fish and the balancing spiciness of the pepper and Nobu's signature rich black cod miso, a decadent rock shrimp tempura in a creamy homemade mayo sauce and the outrageously fresh sushi and nigiri rolls.
Nobu Atlanta is tucked inside the glamorous Nobu Hotel defined by elegant, understated Asian aesthetics. A beautifully designed lobby and inviting guest rooms feature idiosyncratic touches like wooden floors, black-and-white slippers and a traditional Japanese robe to make the experience feel elevated and bespoke. Currently in the works: a mini bar highlighting local shops and Atlanta breweries including a Japanese lager. The property is part of the 56-location restaurant (and 16-hotel) Nobu empire.
Citizens Market Food Hall
The latest entry in Atlanta's booming food hall scene, Citizens Market food hall is a casual option close to Atlanta's high-end shopping destination, Phipps Plaza. The diversity of options at the eight staills include a cocktail bar and every cuisine you might summon up to satisfy a craving: Italian (Cicci Di Carne from chef Dario Cecchini), which serves up a delicious spin on the tuna melt; sushi (Krispy Rice); Mediterranean (Soom Soom Fresh Mediterranean and Michelin-starred chef Dani Garcia's El Pollo Verde); burgers (Umami Burger); and even a classic chicken sandwich joint (Sam's Crispy Chicken) with a long line of fans.
Palo Santo Brings Glam to the Cuisine of Mexico
Housed in a former warehouse, Palo Santo's setting is as striking and as memorable as the cuisine. Already building a reputation for its see-and-be-seen rooftop lounge with stunning city views and a very attractive clientele, this restaurant is from Mexico City native Santiago Gomez who rose to prominence on the Miami restaurant scene. The space is defined by spectacular oversized light fixtures made from plant material and vessels and tableware sourced from Mexico, to give your meal an earthy authenticity. In one of the magical, theatrical touches that defines this gravitas-filled space, staff burn a stick of palo santo and walk through the restaurant as if offering on olfactory blessing to your night. The food defies any preconceptions about Mexican food, though you can order a delicious guacamole to start your meal. There are many memorable options for vegetarians on the menu including an unforgettable caramelized cauliflower dish that recalibrates your brain about that vegetable's potential. The branzino is a deconstructed take on a street food classic with the surpising and delicious addition of basil. And the las bravas dish is another reimagining of the classic Spanish patatas bravas, but far more luscious and decadent. Don't miss a chance to sample from the diverse artisanal tequilas and mezcals offered from the drink cart that makes its way through the dining room at regular intervals, with the option of adding a little protein (aka bug) sidecar to your shot.

Visiting Atlanta: A business traveler’s guide to Georgia’s capital city
May 29, 2024
Home to 71 different streets that bear the name “Peachtree,” Atlanta, Georgia, is a bustling city and premier destination for business travelers. Known for its deep and complex history, diverse culture, and vibrant economy, Atlanta has much to offer business and leisure travelers. Our resident “ATLien” Shemika Britt contributed to this Atlanta city guide.
Atlanta led the list of the most visited domestic cities for business travel in our Cities & Trends 2023 United States edition . It’s home to many Fortune 500 companies, including Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola. And it’s also the home of North American headquarters for BCD Travel. Atlanta is recognized as the city with the fastest growth in people starting a new business. Georgia’s capital city is a major economic hub with a diverse range of industries, including aerospace, finance, technology, film and entertainment, and logistics and transportation.
Meet BCD Travel at GBTA 2024, July 22-24 in Atlanta
Atlanta will be the host city for the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Convention 2024 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The conference is expected to attract thousands of professionals from the business travel sector, including travel managers, service providers, and industry experts. Will you be at the show?
Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL)
Located about 10 miles south of downtown Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson is the world’s busiest airport, serving approximately 105 million passengers last year. Within the airport, travelers can access multiple lounges, business centers, dining options, and shopping outlets. Atlanta’s public transportation system, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) offers a direct train connection to the airport, making it easily accessible from various parts of the city. The Airport Station recently reopened after a six-week closure for renovations.
Shemika: Calling ATL the world’s busiest airport isn’t just boasting. We have two terminals and seven concourses. Check out the airport app or website to get a sense of the layout before your first visit. Allow yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go. Some say get to ATL two hours before a domestic flight, I’d go with three. Travelers with CLEAR and TSA PreCheck® may get through the lines a little faster. People movers and the plane train will help shuttle you to your gate.
Getting around Atlanta
MARTA is a sustainable way to navigate the city. Trains run through key business districts but you may have to connect to a bus to reach your final destination. A single ride costs $2.50, with options for multi-day passes. Trains and buses run on frequent schedules during peak hours, with slightly reduced frequency late at night and on weekends. Take note of operating hours. Trains run from 4:45 a.m. – 1 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. weekends. Buses operate 5 a.m. – 1 a.m. during the week and 5:30 a.m. – 12:30 a.m. on weekends.
Taxis and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are widely available in Atlanta. And, they’re generally affordable, with rates varying depending on distance and demand.
Planning to rent a car? You can pick one up at the airport and at multiple points around the city. Reserve cars in advance and in line with your corporate travel policy. Rental cars get booked up quickly, especially during peak seasons or major events. Before you hop behind the wheel, take a look at a map and familiarize yourself with Atlanta’s traffic patterns and road regulations. GPS can be incredibly helpful for navigating the city’s sprawling roadways.
Shemika: It may feel like rush hour never ends in Atlanta. But typically it starts before 7 a.m. and lasts until about 9 a.m. Traffic starts to pick up again at 4 p.m. and continues until 7 p.m. (or later). Build time and patience into your commute. You might need it.
There’s a couple of highways you need to know about, if you’re planning to drive. Interstate 285, also known as the Perimeter or Inside the Perimeter (ITP), is a beltway that circles Atlanta. Interstates 75 and 85 are major highways that intersect in the city. We call them the Downtown Connector. I-75 and I-85 form a north-south corridor through the city. I-75 primarily runs from north to south, connecting cities like Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Macon, Georgia, while I-85 runs northeast to southwest, connecting cities like Charlotte, North Carolina, and Montgomery, Alabama.
And yes, we do have 71 variations of Peachtree streets, roads and parkways. So, do yourself a favor and doublecheck all addresses.
Dining, entertainment & culture in Atlanta
When exploring dining and entertainment options in Atlanta, travelers can stay in the city center or venture out for foodie experiences and hotspots. Here are a couple of areas to check out:
The Atlanta Beltline: The 22-mile long Beltline is a transformative urban redevelopment project that has become a hub of activity, culture, and recreation. It has multi-use trails perfect for walking, jogging, biking, or skating. You can rent scooters and e-bikes at nearly every corner. One of the highlights of the BeltLine is its ever-evolving collection of public art. Keep your eyes peeled for colorful murals, sculptures, tiny art and installations created by local and international artists. It is lined with a variety of eateries, cafes, and food stalls offering delicious bites and refreshing drinks.
Shemika : If I had a couple of hours to wander along the BeltLine, I’d rent a scooter and make my way to TWO urban licks for the salmon chips. Then head over to the James Room for a cool experience. At first glance, it appears to be a quaint café. A host will lead you through a set of mysterious doors and into a moody, soulful speakeasy serving craft cocktails and the absolute best music playlist. End your Beltline visit with a stroll at sunset and watch the city skyline glow .
Decatur: Explore the charming suburb of Decatur, known for its eclectic dining scene. Stroll along the streets of Decatur Square to find a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars offering everything from Southern comfort food to international cuisine. Don’t miss out on local favorites like Kimball House for oysters or Brick Store Pub for craft beer enthusiasts.
Midtown: Midtown Atlanta is home to a mix of residences, hotels, upscale dining establishments, trendy eateries, and lively entertainment venues. Indulge in culinary delights at establishments like Empire State South for modern Southern cuisine or The Vortex Bar & Grill for legendary burgers and quirky ambiance. Politan Row , a food hall in Midtown Atlanta’s Colony Square, features 12 food options under one roof. Dine inside the common area in the upscale food court or outside in the green space.
Alpharetta: Venture to Alpharetta, a suburb north of Atlanta, for a taste of suburban charm and culinary delights. Explore the Avalon , a mixed-use development offering a plethora of dining options ranging from farm-to-table restaurants to gourmet food halls. Don’t miss Jekyll Brewing or Butcher & Brew for craft beer and artisanal bites.
Buford Highway: From authentic Korean BBQ and Vietnamese pho to Latin American street food and Chinese dim sum, Buford Highway offers a culinary journey around the world. Be sure to explore Plaza Fiesta for a vibrant Latin American shopping and dining experience.
Shemika: My absolute favorite place to eat is Surin of Thailand in the quirky Virginia-Highland neighborhood, just minutes from the heart of the city. It’s tiny and the décor is kind of unremarkable, but hear me out. Golden walls and tealights everywhere make it a vibe. I’ve never have a bad meal there. If you’re into craft drinks, ask for the Ladies Man. It’s not on the menu, but it’s amazing. After dinner, you can walk a few blocks in either direction to window shop at boutiques or people watch at any of the multiple nearby bars.
When it comes to entertainment, Atlanta boasts several iconic venues and attractions:
Fox Theatre: Immerse yourself in the rich history and grandeur of the Fox Theatre , a historic landmark and performing arts venue in Midtown Atlanta. Catch a Broadway show, concert, or classic film screening in this opulent Moorish-style theater.
Roxy : Experience live music and entertainment at The Roxy , a popular concert venue located at The Battery Atlanta near Truist Park. Whether you’re into rock, pop, or country music, The Roxy offers a dynamic lineup of performances in an intimate setting.
Truist Park: Catch a baseball game at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, and indulge in a culinary adventure at The Battery. Explore a diverse selection of dining options, including upscale restaurants, casual eateries, and sports bars, all within walking distance of the ballpark.
Shemika: For lessons and a deeper appreciation into the city’s culture, plan time at the Atlanta History Center , Fernbank Museum of Natural History (there are dinosaurs!), Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park , Michael C. Carlos Museum , or the High Museum of Art .
Co-Working in Atlanta
When you need a break from the hotel room or office, Atlanta offers several excellent coworking spaces and cafes:
- WeWork (Colony Square): Located in Midtown, offering a vibrant environment with all necessary amenities.
- Spaces (Midtown East): A stylish coworking space with flexible options and a collaborative atmosphere.
- Roam (Buckhead): Known for its professional setting and convenient location near upscale dining and shopping.
- Chattahoochee Coffee Company : For a more relaxed atmosphere, this coffee shop provides a scenic view of the Chattahoochee River and a quiet spot to work.

Memorial Day travel: Whether you’re flying or driving, here’s what you need to know
ATLANTA — The Memorial Day holiday weekend is expected to set two travel records in Atlanta starting Thursday.
Whether you’re flying or hitting the roads, Channel 2′s Linda Stouffer looked into what you should know in order to plan a smooth trip.

AAA reports road trips are expected to set a record with about 38 million traveling by car. In metro Atlanta, avoid getting on the road between noon and 7 p.m. on Thursday or Friday. Those are expected to be the most congested times.
Gas prices have remained steady at prices similar to this time last year.
Gas prices have been ticking down in recent days and they really remained steady over the past month or so,” said AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz.
Right now, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Georgia is $3.61. You can click here to see the average prices county-by-county.

If you’re renting a car, book now. Hertz reports Atlanta is one of the top five cities with the highest demand.
At the airport, Channel 2 Action News got inside access with Transportation Security Administration. TSA officer Briana Anderson had this advice for travelers.
“If you’re trying to get through TSA, just make sure that you double check your bags and make sure you don’t have any large liquids, any large toothpaste. And make sure you listen and we’ll get you right through the day,” Anderson told Stouffer.
The TSA says their goal for getting passengers through security is 30 minutes in general security, 10 minutes through precheck. The standard recommendation is to arrive two hours before domestic flights and three hours for international flights.
