The Captain's Quarters, Ranked

Where would you want to spend your time?

Star Trek: Discovery

StarTrek.com

While I’ve been at home during quarantine, like many other Trekkies, I’ve been rewatching Star Trek . Perhaps it is this extended time at home that caused me to pay closer attention to the homes of Star Trek captains. (It could also be that I recently watched three full seasons of Property Brothers too — it’s been a long few months.)

I started to think about what qualities would make for the best living space aboard a starship. Three things stood out to me as the most important: the flow of the room, the amenities present, and the comfort of the space in space! Within each of these categories I thought about what elements I thought were essential and adjusted my rating based on their presence or absence. I’ve ranked each room out of ten in each of the three main categories and then added these to give an overall score out of thirty.

Captain Kirk’s Quarters - USS Enterprise (NCC - 1701)

Star Trek: The Original Series

While small, the flow of Kirk’s room is better than your average college dorm room. There are two distinct spaces in the room (office area and sleeping area) which are made clear by the furniture and the small dividing wall. It is this partial wall that makes this space more like a small apartment and less like a dorm room. The entrance into the room is in the office area which lends additional privacy to the sleeping area. While a sliding door between the two rooms would have provided more privacy the room flows well for its size.

Amenities: 5/10

Kirk’s quarters have most of what a Starfleet officer needs. There is a computer, communication system, desk, chairs, built in drawers, and a closet/bathroom. The main drawback for me was the lack of access to food in the quarters. If I was Captain of a starship I know I would want to be able to have a midnight snack without leaving my room.

Comfort:  3/10

The comfort of Captain Kirk’s quarters gets a low rating for a few reasons. The first is the complete lack of windows — even tiny college dorm rooms have one window! The second is the bed. Kirk’s bed appears to be only marginally more comfortable than the beds in sickbay — at least in sickbay you get a blanket. And what is with that weird rectangular pillow? Also, orange is not the calming color you would expect in your bedroom. What keeps this room from getting an even lower score  for comfort is the presence of personal items including a potted plant.

Star Trek: The Original Series -

Overall Score: 15/30

Captain Picard’s Quarters - USS Enterprise (NCC - 1701 - D)

Star Trek: The Next Generation

The first thing that stands out about Captain Picard’s quarters is the size. This space is comparable to that of a loft apartment rather than a dorm room. The main living space is open concept with sight-lines between the seating, eating, and working areas. Furniture and accessories define what each space is used for without cutting it off from the rest of the room. A full wall with a sliding door gives the bedroom more privacy. The bedroom itself is spacious (maybe even the size of Kirk’s whole quarters). My only critique is the placement of the desk - personally I find it awkward to not be able to see who is entering my room while I’m sitting at my desk. I would have placed the replicator and bookshelves on that wall and moved the desk to the same wall as the door to the bedroom.

Amenities: 10/10

Picard’s quarters do not seem to be lacking anything Starfleet officers might need. He has a computer, desk, dining table, seating area, bathroom, bookshelf, and most excitingly a food replicator. As captain I could very easily pass my time in this room before the next adventure came.

Comfort: 9/10

Windows! Not only are there windows but there is a whole wall of windows in the main living area and in the bedroom. All in all the furniture in this space also appears to be comfortable. Having both a couch and armchairs also makes it more possible to have guests come and feel welcome in the space. Moving on to the bed the first thing that stands out is the size, no more college dorm sized bed for the captain. Second, the bed actually has blankets and, depending on the season, no weird rectangular pillow. The only drawback comfort wise for me are the carpets. The carpet itself is not a problem (I’m sure carpets on the Enterprise D are kept very clean) but the color. The beige tone that was chosen is very dull and is the only reason keeping these quarters from a perfect score.

Star Trek: The Next Generation -

Overall Score: 28/30

Captain Sisko’s Quarters - Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Flow: 10/10

Much like Picard’s quarters Sisko’s quarters are also an open floor plan. In fact, because of the more industrial look of Deep Space Nine these quarters are slightly reminiscent of old mills that have been converted into lofts. Personally, I like the industrial look of the quarters on Deep Space Nine . The main living area has three distinct spaces: a desk for doing work, a seating area with a couch and two chairs, and a dining area. While the room appears to be slightly narrower than Captain Picard's, the arrangement of furniture makes the space feel open. Additionally, a smaller work area leaves more room for the dining and sitting areas. Having the bedrooms come off of different sides of the room gives both Captain Sisko and Jake privacy. I know if I had to get up early to run a space station, I wouldn’t want my teenage son to keep me awake.

Despite being a reclaimed Cardassian space station, Sisko’s quarters are not lacking in any of the basic needs of a Starfleet officer. One of my favorite things is that Sisko was able to get quarters that had room for his son. The fact that Jake has his own space gives this room major points. Other than the additional room for Jake there is a desk, seating area, dining area, and food replicator. I also appreciated that while he could replicate food there is the space in the quarters for Sisko to cook his own food.

Comfort: 7/10

There were a few reasons that Captain Sisko’s quarters received a lower rating for comfort. While there are windows in this space they are considerably smaller than those on the Enterprise-D . Furthermore, only one of the two bedrooms has a window. The low light level in the space also affected the comfort rating. I can imagine that while Sisko was preparing food he might have appreciated better lighting — especially when chopping vegetables. While the darkness is due to this being a former Cardassian station I think it would have been possible to replicate some accent lamps (perhaps even a salt lamp or two). In the pilot of Deep Space Nine , Jake points out that their newly assigned quarters have no bed. O’Brien assures the two of them that they can get “a real bunk off the Enterprise ''. This assertion leads me to believe the beds in the room would be similar quality to that on the Enterprise-D , and not the uncomfortable Cardassian beds we hear so much about on the show.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -

Overall Score: 27/30

Captain Janeway’s Quarters - USS Voyager (NCC - 74656)

Star Trek: Voyager

The flow of Janeway’s quarters is very similar to those on the Enterprise-D . This makes sense considering the two ships were constructed in a similar time period. The set up of the main living area allows for Janeway to do work from her desk while also having space to have crew over for dinner or just to talk. The main flaw I see in this space is the fact that there are two entry ways. I’m sure there is a practical reason to have two of them and I would simply eliminate one. I think it makes the most sense to keep the one that is closer to the bedroom area. Also, considering Janeway has a rather large office off of the bridge I would also consider shrinking down the work area. Sisko has a very small desk in his quarters and I think something like that would fit better on Voyager .

Amenities are of utmost importance on Voyager considering how much time the crew spends onboard the ship. Janeway’s quarters have a work area, eating area, sitting area, bedroom, bathroom, and replicator. Even though Neelix is always cooking, we all know the crew is thankful to have replicators in their rooms. Plus, how else would Janeway get her morning coffee?

The absolute best part of Janeway’s quarters is the presence of a huge bathtub! What better way to relax when thrown into a distant galaxy than in a giant bubble bath. Her bedroom also receives high points because of the huge windows along with blankets and real pillows on the bed. However, the comfort in the living area furniture does not quite match up with that of the bedroom and bathroom. While it makes practical sense to build furniture like the couch into the wall it could have been more comfortable if padding were added to the arms. Having large windows in the main living space is a positive feature of the space. The grey carpet, while still slightly bland, is better than the beige carpet on the Enterprise .

Star Trek: Voyager -

Captain Archer’s Quarters - Enterprise (NX - 01)

Star Trek: Enterprise

Out of all the captain’s quarters, Archer's is most similar to a dorm room. (My own dorm room was probably only slightly smaller.) There is a smallish entryway that is set apart from the rest of the room but this is the only real division in the space. There is no separation between the working and sleeping areas. Additionally, there are only two spare chairs in the room making it very awkward for any guests to come and visit. I do appreciate that the bed is placed out of sight of the door, this does give the space some privacy. The only reason that this room does not get a lower flow rating is that there is room for Porthos to have a dog bed, even if he does spend a lot of time on Archer’s bed.

Amenities: 4/10

The amenities in this room cover the basics, but there is nothing very exciting. There is a desk, computer station, two chairs, bed, and bathroom. Like the Enterprise-1701 there is no way for the captain of the NX-01 to make food in his quarters. Archer does have a decent amount of storage space (at least enough room for food for Porthos) in the entryway to his room, which does help the small space seem a little more useful.

Comfort: 4/10

Archer’s quarters also receive a low rating on comfort. One of the main reasons is the size of the bed. Even at 5’ 2’’ I prefer to sleep in a full sized bed. (Clearly a nice bed is an important factor for me.) Overall, the room is also very grey. While I was not a big fan of the orange accents on the Enterprise NCC-1701 at least there was an attempt at a pop of color in the design of that room.

Star Trek: Enterprise -

Overall Score: 13/30

Captain Lorca’s Quarters - USS Discovery (NCC - 1031)

Star Trek: Discovery

Like the rooms on the Enterprise NX-01 and NCC-1701 the captain’s quarters on Discovery are a single room. Out of the three Lorca’s quarters have the biggest floor plan, there is much more space to move around this room. The main spaces in the room appear to be a seating area and sleeping area. While I like the size of the sleeping area I do wish there was more separation between it and the rest of the room. There are two small walls but they don’t really create any privacy in the space.

Not much show time is spent in Lorca’s quarters so it is hard to tell what amenities are present in this room. There appears to be a seating area, bed, and bathroom. Based on the fact that the show takes place before The Original Series I would guess that there are no food replicators in the quarters. This drops the amenity points. A plus for this space is the seating area, if Lorca was more social he could have had visitors come to this space.

Comfort: 6/10

Like the other early ships there are no windows in this space and this brings the comfort rating down. However, unlike the Enterprise NX-01 and NCC-1701 these quarters have a bed that actually looks comfortable. This fact raises the comfort score a little bit.

Overall Score: 18/30

So how do all the captain’s quarters stack up? It turns out that the newer a ship was, the higher overall ratings I gave it. As one may have expected from the start, newer ships tended to have more space for quarters and better amenities within the quarters which helped them get higher scores. The older ships tended to be smaller and were lacking basics like windows and food replicators. If I had to choose a ship to live on I would choose Deep Space Nine or Voyager. What about you?

Final Rankings:

1st - Tie between Janeway’s quarters on Voyager and Picard’s on the Enterprise - D with overall scores of 28 out of 30.

2nd - Sisko’s quarters on Deep Space Nine with an overall score of 27 out of 30.

3rd - Lorca’s quarters on Discovery with an overall score of 18.

4th - Kirk’s quarters on the Enterprise NCC-1701 with an overall score of 15.

Last - Archer’s quarters on the Enterprise NX-01 with a score of 13.

Forgotten Trek

From Kirk’s to Data’s Quarters

Kirk’s quarters in The Motion Picture were originally built for the aborted second Star Trek television series Phase II and would go on to serve as Data’s and Worf’s quarters in The Next Generation as well as those of the junior officers, like Harry Kim, on Voyager .

Kirk’s quarters

Enterprise crew quarters concept art

The production crew of Phase II had only erected the walls of Kirk’s quarters when the show was canceled and produced shifted to The Motion Picture . The stateroom Leon Harris built for the movie, and which doubled as Lieutenant Ilia’s quarters, nevertheless stayed largely true to Mike Minor’s design.

It consisted of two sections: a living room with a library computer terminal and a sleeping area with access to a bathroom, separated by a retractable, transparent partition. The translucent sliding door was an invention of Production Designer Harold Michelson.

A large wall display that showed minimalist art when not in use as viewscreen involved a rare use of rear projection and was back-lit for the artwork.

Kirk's quarters in the 2009 Blu-ray theatrical cut

Built but unseen was a corner booth and table designed as dining area. Lora (then Shane) Johnson, the author of Mr Scott’s Guide to the Enterprise (1987), visited the set in 1986 just after Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home had been filmed, and told Greg Taylor of Trekplace that it had “a clear plexiglas tabletop and snazzy upholstery.”

In Star Trek II , the same corner of the room was refurbished as Spock’s meditation alcove.

Kirk's quarters floor plan

Warmer colors

Minor, of all people, disliked how the set had turned out, telling Enterprise Incidents in 1984 ( My Star Trek Scrapbook has the full interview ), “it’s just ghastly — dead, empty, nothing’s going on.” So when he took over from Harris as art director for Star Trek II , he said, “we tried to soften things, warm them up and do things with the interior, add appointments to make them more human.”

Kirk's quarters

The team carpeted the wall and Minor remembered it was Production Designer Joe Jennings who came up with the cabinets around Kirk’s desk.

He recognized, though, that it’s hard to find the right balance:

You’ve got a combination space-going liner and military vessel, so just where do you draw the line?

Contemporary warships are spartan. On the other hand, the Enterprise is designed to be away from home for five years, so “it needs more color.”

Spock’s quarters

Nicholas Meyer and Leonard Nimoy

The set doubled as Spock’s quarters in Star Trek II and III . The plan was to hang a Vulcan tapestry on the wall, but there wasn’t time to make one. Instead, Jennings and Minor designed a wall mural composed of hundreds of small metal discs and thousands of sequins hung from pins.

Leonard Nimoy wasn’t happy with the result. Director Nicholas Meyer later agreed, saying in the audio commentary to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — The Director’s Edition ,

Spock’s room, as a Vulcan, I think, should have been atmospheric and mysterious and different. It should have been a very different [scene].

Nimoy got his chance to improve the set on Star Trek III , which he directed. The grey of the previous film was replaced with red, orange and amber.

Spock's quarters

The Next Generation

The first season of The Next Generation redressed the movie set, giving it lighter colors but retaining many of its structural elements, including the small foyer, curved bathroom door and half-open wall-to-ceiling partition. What had been a dining booth in Kirk’s quarters and meditation alcove in Spock’s was removed.

Geordi's quarters

The set was rebuilt for Season 2 with a modular design, so it could be better customized to different characters. The tiny foyer, curved bathroom door and half-open partition were removed. The curved wall was retained in Data’s office, if swiched from blue to beige. When the same room became Geordi’s or Worf’s bedroom, the curved wall elements were removed. All the doors were repainted from grey to orange.

Data's quarters concept art

Where the bathroom had been, Geordi’s and Worf’s quarters got a new foyer that presumably led to the bathroom. No actual bathroom was built.

Data's quarters floor plan

Voyager used the same set for the quarters of its junior officers and enlisted crew but added a bathroom and switched the color back to — wait for it — grey.

To drive home that Voyager was a smaller ship than the Enterprise -D, lower-rank personnel had to share quarters, for example in the episode “Good Shepherd”.

Kim's quarters

The original layout has never made sense to me with the entrance right into the bedroom. It should have been into the living room.
This is Kirk we’re talking about. I think the bedroom being the first stop is… appropriate?

Jean-Luc Picard's Captains quarters

Let’s Judge These Star Trek Captains’ Quarters

Image of Kaila Hale-Stern

We’ve had several beloved Starfleet Captains, but how are they sleeping at night? Journey with me into the final frontier of  Star Trek Captains’ quarters, and let’s see who had the sweetest floor plan.

Courtesy of a post by home services site Angie’s List , we now have detailed layouts to pore over. They created floor plans of our Captains’ quarters, starting with Kirk’s in  The Original Series to Archer’s on  Enterprise. Discovery  is a bit trickier Captain-wise, since we only have the late unlamented Lorca’s rooms for reference—but maybe Pike will show us where he lays his head in the future.

star trek enterprise quarters

The original (and, ahem, the best) Captain James T. Kirk had a small, spare combined living space and bedroom. It has a ’60s-dreaming-of-the-future flair, with some collected artifacts you can see in the picture up top. It’s hard to imagine our energetic Captain penned up in here for long (except, perhaps, in that bedroom). No wonder he was always roaming the halls and spoiling for a fight (or a game of three-dimensional chess with Spock).

Angie’s List notes: Along with a bed, Kirk’s only other furniture were a desk and chair for working on his personal computer, without even a window to see the stars flying past. He had minimal decorations and personal effects, and were as one alien queen described them: “Your quarters are quite like you, Captain: austere and efficient, and in their own way, handsome.”

star trek enterprise quarters

Fittingly, our worldly Captain Jean-Luc Picard has a more sophisticated setup onboard his  Enterprise. Of course Picard seems to have two rooms designed entirely for the purposes of reading, plus his own in-house conference table for meetings on the fly and/or gourmet dinner parties. Sleek and yet still inviting relaxation with a good book in hand, I think I could pick these quarters out as Picard’s even without a label.

star trek enterprise quarters

My personal fave Ben Sisko had more permanent-feeling quarters on Deep Space Nine , though the station’s conversion from its origin as a Cardassian mining station and its use in wartime gives his rooms a different foundation than those aboard a Starfleet vessel. Sisko was our only Captain to have a child on TV, and Jake’s room is incorporated as well (the literary Jake needs a writing desk, though).

I love the big round windows that let in all that space and stars, and a lookout point for trouble coming from the wormhole. Sisko’s living space seems lived-in and reflects his sociable personality.

star trek enterprise quarters

Our first lady Captain’s quarters on  Voyager look light and airy and modern (and I love the purple). Captain Kathryn Janeway was ready for action with a central administrative desk and a large screen, but like Picard and Sisko, she also has some cozy nooks. She’s embellished her quarters with personal touches like artwork on the walls, a prominent plant, and old Earth tech like the gramophone. Her dining room setup is less conference room like Picard’s and more ready for the dinner party.

As Angie’s List points out, “Star Trek went back in time for its next series, so Captain Jonathan Archer’s quarters on board the early version of the Enterprise were much more basic than the rest of the captains who have been featured.”

We’re back to spare design with Captain Jonathan Archer’s  Enterprise  quarters, a reminder that this is a Starfleet ship and not a pleasure vessel. Of course, most prominently featured here is Archer’s beloved pet Beagle Porthos, who is notably not residing on his own bed.

Since  Discovery takes place before  The Next Generation , the production team couldn’t suddenly go wild with a lavish Captain’s quarters for Gabriel Lorca. But they’ve incorporated some of that evocative Janeway purple as well as the relaxation areas favored by Picard and Sisko.

Angie’s List notes that, tellingly, “There was little in the way of personal items in his quarters, though most of his possessions seemed to be kept in his creepy ‘menagerie’ elsewhere on Discovery.” Maybe it was difficult for Lorca to populate his quarters with a real personal touch, considering that he was an imposter.

I love getting to see this detailed slice of interior starship life. Which Captain’s quarters are calling to you? If I could move in anywhere right this moment, I’d go for Janeway’s.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that even among the greatest television shows in Star Trek history, most of them take two seasons to stop being kind of bad. Never has that been more true or more excruciating than in the case of Star Trek: Discovery .

Polygon is looking ahead to the movies, shows, and books coming soon in our Spring 2024 entertainment preview package, a weeklong special issue.

Often it felt like what Discovery was really doing in its early seasons was discovering what didn’t work. Strong performances from a great cast? That works. A Klingon design that absolutely nobody liked ? Definitely not. But despite the stumbles, Discovery season 1 had still averaged C’s and B’s with reviewers, and had built an audience and a subscriber base for Paramount Plus. On the strength of Disco ’s first season, Paramount greenlit Star Treks Picard , Lower Decks , and Prodigy , three new shows covering a huge range of ages and nostalgic tastes. And spinning out of Disco ’s second season, which introduced familiar , nostalgic characters and a brighter, more Star Trek-y tone, Paramount produced Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , inarguably the best new addition to the franchise since 1996.

Star Trek: Discovery crawled so that the rest of modern Trek could run... and then it started to walk. The show’s third season saw the USS Discovery and crew in the place that should have been their starting blocks: the bleeding future edge of Star Trek’s timeline. Thanks to season 3’s groundwork, season 4 became the first time that Discovery had a status quo worth returning to. In its fifth and final season, Star Trek: Discovery is finally free — free in a way that a Star Trek TV series hasn’t been in 23 years.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery, season 5. Wearing a glowing uniformed spacesuit, she clings to the back of a spaceship speeding through hyperspace, colorful lights streaking the background.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is such an elder statesman of the television elite that it’s easy to forget that it was daring. The show’s triumph wasn’t just that it featured a new cast of characters, but also its audaciousness in imagining the future of the future — and making that future unmistakably different . The Original Series showed a racial and national cooperation that seemed fantastical in its time, with an alien crewmember to denote the next frontier of embracing the other . Next Generation saw that bet and raised it, installing a member of the Klingon species, the Federation’s once-feared imperialist rival state, as a respected officer on the bridge of Starfleet’s flagship.

Next Generation ’s time period — one century after Kirk’s Enterprise — wasn’t a nominal choice, but a commitment to moving the story of Star Trek forward. From the show’s foundations, Gene Roddenberry and his collaborators, new and old, set a precedent that the Federation would evolve. Therefore, in accordance with the utopian themes of the franchise, old enemies would in time become friends. Next Generation embraced The Original Series ’ nemeses and the rest of ’90s Trek saw that bet and raised it again, pulling many of Next Gen ’s villains into the heroic fold. Voyager welcomed a Borg crewmember and disincorporated the Borg empire; Deep Space Nine gave the franchise the first Ferengi Starfleet cadet, and brokered a Federation-Klingon-Romulan alliance in the face of an existential threat.

But Discovery — at least until it made its Olympic long-jump leap 900 years into the future — couldn’t move Star Trek forward. So long as it was set “immediately before Kirk’s Enterprise,” hemmed in by the constraints of a previously established era of Star Trek history, it could graft on new elements (like Spock’s secret human foster sister) but it couldn’t create from whole cloth (like a galaxy-wide shortage of starship fuel that nearly destroyed the Federation). Like its predecessor, the ill-fated Star Trek: Enterprise of the ’00s, it was doomed to hang like a remora on the side of the events of The Original Series , or, if you’ll pardon another fish metaphor, doomed like a goldfish that can only grow as large as its half-gallon fishbowl will allow.

Discovery ’s later, free seasons in the 32nd century have shown the Federation at its most vulnerable, a subtler echo of Picard ’s own season 1 swing at fallen institutions . (Fans of Voyager and Deep Space Nine know that this is an extremely rich vein of Trek storytelling.) In its third season, Discovery solved a galaxy-wide fuel crisis that had shattered the community of the Federation. In its fourth it fought for a fragile new Federation alliance and its millennia-old ideals.

And those seasons have also boldly committed to the idea of imagining the future’s future — 900 years of it. The centuries-old rift between Vulcans and Romulans is long healed, Ferengi serve as captains in Starfleet, the work of Doctor Noonien Soong has brought new medical technologies to the fore.

Even still, Discovery hasn’t been truly free in its third and fourth seasons. Star Trek: Picard was out there, forming new past elements of a post- Next Gen / Voy / DS9 era that Discovery had to abide by. And, after all, the show still had to make sure there was something for its own next season to come back to.

Blu del Barrio as Adira in Star Trek: Discovery. She kneels confused before a strange figure dressed in white with white hair, with red robed figures in the background.

But now — with Prodigy and Picard finished, and Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks locked into their settings of Star Trek’s established past, and Starfleet Academy and Section 31 not yet in production at the time that its final season would have been written — Discovery has reached the final final frontier for a Star Trek show. If you’re a Star Trek fan, that should excite you.

Not since Deep Space Nine in 1999 and Voyager in 2001 has a Star Trek series had the freedom to wrap up its run with the Federation in any state it wants to. With franchise flagship Next Generation at an end, and Voyager restricted to the Delta Quadrant only, Deep Space Nine used its last seasons to throw the Federation into all-out war, making sweeping changes to the established ficto-political norms of ’90s Trek. Voyager used its finale to do what Captain Picard never could: defang the Borg (mostly).

We don’t know exactly what Discovery will do with that freedom. Season 4 directors have talked about reaching “ into the past to get further into the future ,” and likened it to Indiana Jones. Official news releases have said the crew will “uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.” But speculating on what that means would be beside the point.

Discovery , the show about an intergalactically teleporting starship, can finally, actually, go anywhere. It’s been almost a quarter of a century since a beloved Star Trek series was so free to boldly go. Let’s hope they’re very bold indeed.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres with two episodes on April 4 on Paramount Plus.

Is season three of Star Trek: Enterprise really 9/11 in space?

Warning: this contains a brief spoiler for the series finale of star trek: discovery, life, itself..

T he end of Star Trek: Discovery gave a little throwback to Star Trek: Enterprise with Kovich revealing that he was Agent Daniels. Fans of Enterprise will remember Agent Daniels for his part in the Temporal Cold War. Lina Morgan from Bells of Souls made some excellent points as to why Discovery fans should watch Enterprise following that reveleation. It really was a neat, unexpected tie-in, and I'm on board with Morgan recommending a watch with caveats.

One interesting point of view Morgan made was that the season three of Enterprise "is basically just 9/11 in space." I've never heard it phrased that way, and there's no indication that the writers had this intention. However, Enterprise debuted on September 26, 2001, just fifteen days after 9/11. Many television shows during that time did, at some point in the future, reference the tragedy. The West Wing, Law and Order, NYPD Blue, Homeland, and even the sci-fi series, Fringe, had episodes that either directly referenced 9/11 or focused on other terrorist attacks. So it certainly wouldn't be out of the question for the Xindi storyline to have come about because of 9/11.

Season two of Enterprise concluded on May 21, 2003, and the third season focused on the aftermath of the Xindi's attack on Earth with Captain Archer and the Enterprise crew trying to track down the aliens and destroy the weapon they'd used before it could be utilized again. Adding the weapon to the season kept the series from focusing on revenge. As it turns out, though, the Xindi attacked Earth because of false information that humans would destroy their world in 400 years.

I can certainly see Morgan's point of view and why others could believe that Enterprise had created its own version of 9/11. Some would say, though, that the decision to move in this direction affected Enterprise negatively along with it debuting so soon after the horrific events of 9/11. Season three was definitely much darker than the previous two seasons and took the crew members down a more painful path. Perhaps that was a reminder that viewers just didn't want at the time or they simply preferred their television watching experience to be about entertainment and escapism not the reality of the devastating attack that took place on 9/11.

A new “Hunger Games” prequel film will be released in theaters in 2026.

After last November’s “Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” charmed its way to $337 million at the box office, Lionsgate teased that moviegoers may not have seen the last of Panem, the dystopia where the story is set — even though the spinoff story covered the entirety of author Suzanne Collins’ 2020 novel of the same name.

Like the forthcoming novel, “ The Hunger Games : Sunrise on the Reaping” will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of the “Hunger Games” saga (anchored by thee Katniss Everdeen) and four decades after “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” It will start on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell — in which Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original series, competed. Haymitch Abernathy later mentors Katniss and Peeta in the 74th Hunger Games.

“Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star,” Fogelson said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant. The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and looms large over the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter-century later.”

Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien will oversee the production on behalf of the studio. Patricia Laucella and Phil Strina oversaw the rights for the book for Lionsgate.

“The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” took place 64 years before Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute. Tom Blyth played a young Coriolanus Snow, who later becomes the tyrannical leader of Panem, while Rachel Zegler portrayed impoverished District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird, whom he mentors and develops feelings for during the 10th annual battle royale. By the end of “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” Lucy Gray Baird’s fate remains ambiguous and Snow begins his ruthless rise to power.
