Chile & Easter Island

tours to easter island from santiago

This classic 8-day Chile and Easter Island itinerary takes you from Santiago de Chile to the enigmatic Easter Island. Enjoy the modern and historical highlights of Chile’s sophisticated and eclectic capital city, then head to Easter Island, aka Rapa Nui, in the Pacific Ocean for a chance to marvel at the moai, the giant human forms carved from stone. Learn about the heritage of the Rapa Nui people, the island’s native Polynesians.

Santiago de Chile

Chile’s exciting capital city is characterized by skyscrapers against a stunning snow-capped mountain backdrop. There’s lots to see and do here, and the best way to take it all in is on a downtown walking tour through the historic district. Start at the main avenue, the Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins, and head to La Moneda, the Government Palace.

Walk through the pedestrian streets of Huérfanos and Ahumada, and visit the famous main square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, where you’ll see the beautiful Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago. Continue to Santa Lucia hill, which is a great vantage point for viewing the city. Stroll around Providencia with its top restaurants, elegant shops, and modern high-rise buildings. Finally, a highlight of any visit to Santiago is taking the funicular up to Cerro San Cristobal, the city’s highest hill, for stunning panoramic views.

Easter Island

This unforgettable Easter Island Chile tour allows plenty of time to stand in awe and admire the many giant stone moai statues, which were built during the 13th – 16th centuries by the island’s inhabitants, the Rapa Nui people, in honor of their ancestors. View the moai at various different locations on the island. Head to Rano Raraku volcano − which is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the world − and view the quarry where moai were cut from volcanic tuff.

The quarry contains 397 moai statues which are all at various stages of carving. Walk along the path that leads to the ancient crater; it is like being in an open-air museum. Marvel at the most famous and best preserved moai platform of Ahu Tongariki, where 15 complete statues stand in an impressive line on their ahu plinth in front of the ocean and cliffs. This is the picture that you will see on nearly every postcard rack on Easter Island. Wander Anakena Beach, the legendary landing place of Hota Matua and take a dip in the cold Pacific. See Ahu Nau Nau, which is the best-preserved platform on the island because the toppled statues were buried under sand for many years, protecting them from damage.

Take a drive up to Rano Kau, the largest volcano on Easter Island and the location of the historic Orongo village. See the stone dwellings looking out over the sea towards a couple of rocky islands. This ceremonial village is where the ancient ‘Birdman’ competition was held, pitting representatives from each village on the island against each other in a dangerous climbing and swimming match to one of the offshore islands.

Peer inside the Puna Pau volcanic crater where there is a quarry of red scoria that was once an important source of raw material for the islanders. Visit Ahu Akivi for unparalleled ocean views.

Rich in legends, extraordinary landscapes and gorgeous sunsets, this is an unforgettable trip of a lifetime, perfect for couples and families with kids. The featured activities and accommodations can be tailored to suit your personal wishes. The tours are conducted on a private basis (private transport with a private guide).

Welcome to Chile!

Welcome to Santiago, the capital and largest city of Chile as well as one of the biggest cities in the Americas. It is situated smack bang in the center of Santiago Metropolitan Region, which is Chile most densely populated region, with a population of 7 million. Filling the country’s central valley, was founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago is rare among South American capital cities in that it has served as the capital city since the colonial occupation.

Downtown and central Santiago is largely made-up of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, but has smatterings of art-deco and neo-gothic architecture, amongst others. Like many cities in along the Western confines of the continent, Santiago is surrounded by hills as the Andes begin to rise behind it. The main river in the city is the fast-flowing Mapocho River, and Santiago is known in South America for being modern, organized, and very safe, as well as a clean, prosperous city with important financial and industrial clout in South America.

Upon arrival in Chile, you will be picked up at the airport and taken to your hotel.

City Tour Santiago San Cristobal

On today’s excursion, we explore the historical and modern sights of Santiago de Chile. We start our trip at the main avenue, the Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins, and head to La Moneda, the Government Palace, where we will learn about the historical and contemporary role it plays in Chilean life.

From there we take a walk through the pedestrian streets of Huérfanos and Ahumada, where the main commercial activity of the city is concentrated. Afterward, we visit the famous main square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, around which are several important historical buildings, including the Metropolitan Cathedral. From there we continue our trip on to Santa Lucia hill, the mount upon which the Spanish founded Santiago in 1541. It is a lone steep rock, covered in vegetation and a great vantage point for viewing the city.

Moving on, we cross the Mapocho River to get to Bellavista, the cultural and artistic neighborhood of Santiago and home to many artists, actors, and young bohemian people. Bellavista lies at the foot of the San Cristóbal Hill, the highest in town, and is situated in the middle of the Metropolitan Park. We venture up the hill to explore the surrounding areas all the while enjoying beautiful panoramic views of the city. Finally, we visit Providencia with its top restaurants, elegant shops, and modern high-rise buildings. After this amazing tour, we will call it a day and return to the hotel.

Welcome to Rapa Nui!

Today we are transferred to the airport for our flight to Easter Island!

Upon our arrival at the Mataveri airport in Hanga Roa, we are received with the traditional Island welcome presentation of a traditional flower necklace. After a short transfer to the hotel, we will have the rest of the day to spend as we please. A visit to the nearby church and village is recommended, where we have the opportunity to observe both Catholic and indigenous symbols and statues (Sunday mass available if time permits).  Next to the church, there is a local market and museum rich in Rapa Nui artifacts and culture.

The Moai of Easter Island

Today we will learn more about the fascinating history of Rapa Nui as we head south along the coast. As we travel along the road, we have the black volcanic rock shoreline as a backdrop, and behind that, some amazing views of the vast Pacific Ocean.

Our first stop will be a place known as Hanga Te’e where we will be able to view a variety of toppled Moai (statues) of Ahu Vaihu. From there, we will continue on and arrive in Rano Raraku. This volcano is home to an ancient quarry that supplied the stone from which about 95% of the island’s sculptures were carved. Here we will enjoy a box-lunch and explore our surroundings.

Subsequently, we make our way to the next highlight, Ahu Tongariki. This is the largest restored Ahu on Easter Island and features 15 impressive moai. Afterward, we drive towards the east coast and arrive at Te Pito o Te Henua. This location is known locally as the “bellybutton” of the world boasting the nearby Ahu Te Pito Kura. Last, but not least, we will reach the beach of Anakena known for its beautiful white sand and coconut palm trees. After some time here, and a visit to a nearby restored Ahu Nau Nau, we’ll have time for a little rest and a refreshing swim in the Pacific Ocean.

Legendary Tangata Manu Bird Cult

After breakfast in the hotel, we take a drive up the Rano Kau, an extinct volcano that offers spectacular views from the track that takes you towards the summit. Along the way we will be able to stop and appreciate beautiful panoramic views of the island from different heights and angles – these stopping points are great places to take some really impressive pictures of the dramatic scenery.  Further up, we make a brief stop at an outlook point from which we can see the beautiful lake which is nestled neatly inside the old volcanic crater.

From there, we will head to the ceremonial village known as Orongo and learn about its fascinating past and how such traditions have been preserved to this day. Orongo is home to the birdman cult, Tangata-Manu, an epic annual race in which competitors needed to swim to a nearby island, harvest the first egg of the sooty tern, and return to Rapa Nui, climbing the cliff with the egg intact!

Here, we can also see some ancient petroglyphs and have a fantastic view of the three islets situated on the opposing coastline. Afterward, we will drive down the volcano to the Ahu Vinapu that includes an ahu – a sacred ceremonial site where several moai stand – with its intricate stonemasonry. Our last stop of the morning before heading back to the hotel will be the cave of Ana Kai Tangata, famed for the ancient cave paintings that adorn its walls

Original Seven Explorers

After a good rest and a delicious breakfast, we set off to Ahu Akivi, a sacred place that features seven re-erected moai. This Ahu is situated inland, and as such, varies a little from other statue collections. Our guide will tell you about the story and legends around this sight and the belief that these statues represent the first seven explorers who were sent to Rapa Nui by the late king Hotu Matua.

From there, we continue on to Hanga Poukura, a site with a number of ahu in various states of disrepair. One of the most famous and varied statue sites on the Island, where we can see the widest variation of stones, with the famous “topknot” statues featured heavily.

Next, we will visit the important quarry of Puna Pau that provided the sole source of the red scoria that the Rapa Nui villagers used to carve the Pukaos, with every single one traceable back to this one quarry site. We conclude our visit by heading back towards shore and a visit the ceremonial site of Tahai which boasts three completely intact ahus, some other statues that have been lovingly and carefully restored and the remains of the old boathouses and ramp system used many years ago. This is a day is filled with history, culture, and breathtaking sights!

This discovery tour to Chile will introduce you to two very different faces of this comically thin nation that stretches from the bellybutton of South America right down to its big toe. On one hand, you will experience urbane and eccentric capital city of Santiago de Chile, only later to be whisked off to the historically captivating, culturally enigmatic and scenically magical Easter Island. While in Santiago — with its popular local markets, tantalizing local cuisine and bohemian neighborhoods — you’ll discover a cosmopolitan, lively and sophisticated wonderland of old-world legacy, modern elegance and colorful unconventionality nestled at the feet of the snow-covered peaks of the majestic Andes. And once you travel to Easter Island, you will find a place where history meets legend, as this island’s history is present in an almost surreal way: massive and mysterious moai statues scattered all over the island. What you will also find on this 7-day/6-night tour of Santiago and Easter Island is that the people of Chile, wherever they are, constantly strive to retain their cultural heritage in dance, art and music. These two adventures in this single country promise to be a travel experience that you will never forget.

Upon arrival at the airport on Easter Island, you will be welcomed by another private driver, who will take you to your hotel: La Perouse Guest House. This hotel is located on the seafront of Hanga Roa, a few meters from the beach, as well as close to restaurants, shops, banks and recreational areas. An exclusive space where every detail is taken care of, you can enjoy the sunset and the peaceful local life from your guest house’s inviting terrace.

PM: Enjoy the sun and the shore, and let your mind disconnect as you gaze into the most isolated horizon on the planet.

AM: The Arrival of Hotu Matu’a – After breakfast, you will be picked up by your private guide and driver, who will take you on a wonderful full-day tour of the island. You will be introduced to the epoch of when the first Polynesian navigators stepped ashore, as well as when the island was colonized. You will learn the importance of Ariki (“king”) Hotu Matu’a – not only from the placement of his tomb, but also from the efforts that made in his honor to create the island’s emblematic moai statues. The principal sites we will visit this morning will consist of the following: Anakena Beach: Once viewed, it will be easy to understand why the island’s first king, Hotu Matu’a, landed on this beach and initiated one of the most amazing megalithic cultures in history. Anakena Beach has four Ahu (alters), two of which have been reconstructed and two others that attest to the weathering of time. The first Ahu is called “Ature Huki,” which was restored by Heyerdahl in 1955, and the other is called Ahu Nau Nau which was restored by archaeologist Sergio Rapu. Anakena is located to 18 km from Hanga Roa, in the island’s north coast. Ahu Te Pito Kura: This site only has one moai, however it’s height is 10 m (30 feet) and it weighs as much as 90 tons, making it the largest moai to be raised on a platform. The hat-like “topknot” structure alone is worthy of praise, as it weighs up to 11.5 tons. Here, we will also find a very sacred stone that the Ahu is named after. It has been said that this stone was brought from the home island of Hiva by the first Rapa Nui king, Ahu Te Pito Kura. It is located to 2 km from Anakena Beach, also on the north coast. Rano Raraku: Without a doubt, this is one of the most interesting archaeological sites on not only Rapa Nui, but in the entire world. Here we can find 396 moai (statues) in the quarry, which is an extinct volcano that has an amazing fresh water crater. Some of the statues are still encrusted in the quarry’s rock and were never moved. Others were in a process of getting their backs finalized and highlighted, while still others are in the “staging area,” still waiting for the moving crew to take these moai to their destined Ahu. Here, we will also see the largest moai ever carved; called “Te Tokanga” or “El Gigante,” it measures a staggering 22 meters (66 feet) in height and is estimated to weigh 220 tons.

PM: We will have 1 hour for a delicious picnic lunch at a special site for enjoying and relaxing. We will then continue the tour by visiting the following sites this afternoon: Ahu Tongariki: One of the most visually stunning sites on the island, Ahu Tongariki demonstrates how the island’s ancient people were part of a true megalithic culture. Not only is Tongariki the largest reconstructed site on the island, but it is the largest reconstructed temple in all of Polynesia. This site has 15 moai that were restored in the 1980’s after a huge tsunami came ashore in 1960 and washed 80 ton moais ashore. This site is located in front of the Rano Raraku Volcano. Ahu Akahanga: “The Platform of the King,” believed the grave of the first king of the island, Hotu Matu’a, can be found in a cave in Akahanga. Here rest four separate platforms with 12 moai (statues), of various sizes, and 8 Pukao (hat-like “topknots”). One statue can be found behind the Ahu. Interesting lining stones made from red scoria (a type of iron rich volcanic stone used to make topknots, funeral items and boarding stones). Also, petroglyphs run along the front of the main Ahu. Duration of tour: 6 hours (full-day tour) Difficulty: Easy (except trekking the Rano Raraku Volcano, which is of moderate difficulty) Suggested Equipment: Rain gear, proper hiking shoes, sunscreen and comfortable clothes (a map will be provided for each passenger)

AM: After breakfast, you will be picked up by your private guide and driver and taken on 2 wonderful half-day tours of the island. You will be taken to a new era of Rapa Nui’s pre-history. When the moai and the ahu were destroyed and chaos was imminent, a new order rose: the reign of the birdmen. Visit the sites of the annual ceremonies and see where an unrivalled competition of physical dexterity and strength gave power to the competitors able to obtain the first egg of the manutara (“Sooty tern”). The principal sites that we will visit this morning are the following:” Ana Kai Tagata: This beautiful cave has pictograms, which are paintings on rock. The paint is made from mineral pigments found on the island. The paintings depict the Manutara bird. The arrival of this frigatebird in spring would initiate the Tangata Manu competition. Rano Kau: The triangular appearance of Rapa Nui is the result of three main volcanic centers and 70 secondary volcanic cones. Rano Kao was the second of the three main volcanoes to erupt about 2.5 million years ago. It has a height of 310m, a huge crater of 1.6km in diameter, and a fresh water lagoon 11m deep. Inside the crater grow grapes, bananas, and totora (a reed used extensively for houses, boats and other purposes). Orongo: From this vantage point, the curvature of the earth can be seen with an unending vista of ocean. Orongo was restored in 1974 by William Mulloy, who reconstructed 47 houses, many of which had collapsed or had been torn down by treasure hunters. He also established the first set of trails through the site. Recently, a Canadian team created an interpretation 1K trail through Orongo, which makes the visit more accessible and enjoyable. Throughout the trail at Orongo, the Birdman Cult will be highlighted. You will hear a presentation about elements such as the competitions, competitors, and how this competition could be seen as an ecological mechanism for survival during the most difficult part of Rapa Nui history. At the end of the interpretive trail lies Mata Ngarau, which was the central focus of the birdman cult. Here, nearly every boulder is carved and re-carved with petroglyphs (carvings on stone). Duration of morning tour: 3 hours Difficulty: Easy Suggested Equipment: Rain gear and proper hiking shoes (a map will be provided for each passenger)

PM: We will have 1 hour for a delicious picnic lunch, and then continue with the next tour: “Looking To the Stars.”During the last period of the moai era (the most important of Rapa Nui’s culture), the descendants of the Polynesian navigators turned their eyes to the sky. You will be taken to the archaeological sites that tell of the connection between the islanders and the universe. Ahu (altars) and moai (statues) prove the magnificent development of megalithic construction with astronomical orientation. This tour mainly focuses on the central part of the island and all of the great archaeological features that can be found there. Moreover, all of the points represent ancient sites that were created and used during the end of the Ahu Moai phase. This tour visits the following sites: Ahu Huri a Urenga: Located in a depressed area named Manavai Tokerau, this was one of the last Ahu (altars) to be restored by Dr. William Mulloy. It is believed to be astronomically oriented such that the sun on the morning of both the winter and summer solstices would rise directly in the facade of the moai as it stands on its Ahu (altar). Ahu Akivi: This altar, with its seven moai, was completely restored in 1960 by Dr. William Mulloy who dated it back to 1460 AD. 3 Ahu Vai Teka: This island site dates back to 1470 AD and was apparently set up to be oriented towards the rising equinox sun (the beginning of spring and autumn). In the vicinity of this ahu are found a large number of caves and waterholes, which were a very important source of freshwater for the ancient population. Puna Pau: One of the 70 secondary volcanic cones found on the island, Puna Pau is a mineral matrix is much different than other types found on the island. This site has a rich red color due to an iron-rich deposit of easily carved scoria, which the Rapa Nui people used to made topknots, linings, lintel stones, and funeral cists (stone-built coffin-like boxes), among others features. Duration of afternoon tour: 3 hours (half day tour) Difficulty: Easy Suggested Equipment: Rain gear, proper hiking shoes, sunscreen and comfortable clothes (a map will be provided for each passenger)

AM: The First Ahu (altars) – The most complex altars of Polynesian culture in the South Pacific are on Rapa Nui. We invite you to a voyage through time to understand the customs and spiritual traditions of the island’s first inhabitants. Get to know the centers of ancient times on Rapa Nui. This excursion will cover three sites that can be found on the southwest and southern coast of the island, including the impressive stone wall of Ahu Tahira, in the Vinapu area. We will then take the coast road to see many other Ahu Moai scattered along the coast, until we reach Hanga Poukura. This morning’s sites include the following: Vinapu: This sector is one of the oldest on the island (dating back to 600 AD). The stone masonry found on the Ahu Tahira has a fit so perfect it is often compared to that found in Cusco, Peru. Hanga Poukura: This southern coast archaeological site is an excellent example of an ahu (open-air altar) belonging to the era of major conflicts on Easter Island (1680-1864 AD). This was a time when the statue-cult lost importance and the moai statues were toppled, giving rise to new cults, among them the Tangata Manu (birdman). At this site, avanga (funeral cists) can be seen as well. Hanga Te’e (Vaihu): Hanga Te’e is located in the Vaihu district, and here we can see 8 toppled moai forever resting faced down in their ancestral homeland. Vaihu is also the site of the first missionary church built there, in 1868, though it later moved to the village of Hanga Roa. Duration of morning tour: 3 hours Difficulty: Easy Suggested Equipment: Rain gear and proper hiking shoes (a map will be provided for each passenger)

PM: We will have one hour for a delicious picnic lunch. We will then continue with the next tour: “The Twilight of the Moai.”Rapa Nui is known throughout the world for its moai, but before we could see images of the reconstructed statues, the island went through one of its worst periods. You will travel along the road of the twilight of Rapa Nui’s megalithic past, visiting west-coast sites to understand how a civilisation that was able to reach such an elevated level of cultural development could destroy itself before it would rise again. Museum: The Father Sebastian Englert Museum, open from Tuesday to Sunday, is located in the Tahai area, 2 km from the downtown. Ahu Tepeu: This is one of the largest and best preserved ceremonial centers on the island’s west coast. Among other features found there is the largest foundation of a Hare Paenga (a house in the shape of an upturned canoe), with a length of close to 48 meters. Based on its size, it has been concluded that 150 villagers could have slept in it at the same time. According to legend, Tu'u Koihu, the island's second king, was said to have lived there. Tahai: This complex was restored between 1967 and 1968 by archaeologist William Mulloy. This ceremonial complex is one of the oldest sites (6th century). It includes three different ahu. Ahu Ko Te Riku, stands 4.73 meters high, has an estimated weight of 20 tons and has been dated to 690 AD. Ahu Vai Ure holds 5 different statues and on Ahu Tahai stands one statue. Hanga Kio'e: About 3 km north of Hangaroa, Hanga Kio'e is located close to Tahai. Legend claims that the island's leader, the Ariki Henua, was proclaimed at this ceremonial site. Hanga Kio'e was restored by American archaeologist William Mulloy in 1972 and has been dated back to 1650 AD. Duration of tour: 3 hours (half day tour) Difficulty: Easy Suggested Equipment: Rain gear and proper hiking shoes (a map will be provided for each passenger)

AM: At a previously arranged time, you will be taken back to the airport on Easter Island to catch your flight back to Santiago. Once landing in Santiago, you will be met by your private driver and taken to Hotel Cumbres Lastarria.

Chilean Wine Country, Millahue Valley (3 nights)

Following your arrival into Santiago, embark on a two hour drive to unwind in Chile’s spectacular wine country. Arrive at Vik Chile in the Millahue Valley, owned by Alexander Vik whose aim was to produce the best wines in South America. Enjoy lunch at the restaurant terrace, overlooking the beautiful infinity pool and the green valley. In the late afternoon, enjoy a gentle hike or mountain biking excursion in the picturesque valley with your expert guide.

During your time in this region, head into the famed Colchagua Valley for a full day of wine tasting at Chile’s top vineyards. Here, you’ll learn about the rich history of Chilean wine-making, which began in the 16th century by Spanish conquistadors and developed in the 19th century as French varietals were produced, including the iconic Carménère. As guests of Blue Parallel, you will have exclusive access to some of the region’s best vineyards. Among the highlights is lunch at the restaurant of famed South American chef, Francis Mallmann, set in the Viña Montes vineyards.

Explore the expansive vineyards of Vik Chile with the estate’s hosts. Then tour beautiful La Cruz hill on horseback for panoramic views of the property before sitting down for a delicious private picnic. For moments of relaxation during your luxury Chile tour, head to the infinity pool or request a rejuvenating spa treatment. Later, tour the state-of-the-art Vik winery, where you’ll learn about the estate’s different grape varieties.

Santiago (2 nights)

From Vik, head north to the capital city of Santiago. Along the way, stop for a private tour and wine tasting at the renowned vineyard Concha Y Toro. The modern metropolis of Santiago offers fantastic restaurants and is home to bohemian neighborhoods. Your tailor-made Santiago tour can include any or all of the following: the Plaza de Armas with its 18th century cathedral in the heart of the city, Constitution Plaza and La Moneda Palace (the seat of executive power), the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, and the attractive neighborhoods of París-Londres and Santa Lucía. You’ll also get to visit La Chascona, the private home of Pablo Neruda, Chile’s most celebrated writer.

The San Cristóbal lookout point is a popular hangout spot for locals with breathtaking views over Santiago. We will recommend top Chilean restaurants for local seafood paired with fantastic regional wines. For food lovers, we can arrange a unique culinary experience at the private kitchen of a local chef who will teach you about Chilean culture through the country’s typical dishes.

Easter Island (3 nights)

Next, you will embark on your luxury tour of Easter Island which starts with a 5.5 hour flight from Santiago. Upon arrival at your lodge, Explora Rapa Nui, marvel at the dramatic open landscape and Pacific Ocean views. Begin your first afternoon with a hike to Pui Rano Raraku (in private or in a small group) to explore the lower slopes of the volcano, then visit the Moai quarry. This quarry once supplied the island’s stone that the Rapa Nui used to create the mysterious Moai statues that have perplexed visitors ever since Dutch explorers came across the island on Easter Sunday in 1722.

During the next two days, explore spectacular volcanic craters with an expert guide. You’ll also visit the Tongariki, home to the island’s iconic row of Moai statues. Enjoy a full-day hike of the remote northern coast, characterized by its rugged landscape.

Afterwards, visit Anakena Beach to swim in crystal clear waters, then snorkel at beautiful Ovahe beach. Explore Orongo, the ancient ceremonial village that hosted the Tangata Manu (birdman) competition. You’ll get to witness exciting contests of strength that celebrate the unique Rapa Nui culture. In the evenings, enjoy panoramic sunset views and take in the magnetic energy of Easter Island during delicious dinners at your lodge.

Dotted with mysterious stone statues and boasting several volcanic craters, Chile’s Easter Island is one of the remotest places on earth. Located some 2,200 miles from South America, the island was inhabited by Polynesians before the arrival of the Dutch, Spanish, and English in the 1700s. The Europeans were awestruck by the nearly 1,000 moai they found, giant heads and torsos representing the ancestors and gods of a vanished civilization. You will be, too, as our Easter Island Tours take you up close to this fascinating South Pacific destination.

Easter Island is one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world. It is now part of Chile but is little more than a speck in the vast Pacific Ocean, some 2,200 miles west of the mainland. Join Astronomy for a far-out eclipse adventure on Easter Island

Easter Island, home to nearly 1,000 moai statues, will be the prime spot to see on annular solar eclipse on Oct. 2, 2024. Photo: Wikimedia Commons

I’m delighted to say that in October 2024 Astronomy magazine will partner with our tour guide friends at Eclipse Traveler, carrying us to Chile and the magical site of Easter Island .

Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, will witness an annular solar eclipse over the Pacific Ocean. Missing landfall almost entirely, the eclipse will be visible from one of the great, celebrated, exotic locations on Earth — Easter Island! The famous locale is renowned for its nearly 1,000 moai statues created by the Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500 A.D. It will be a mind-blowing place from which to see an eclipse.

The trip schedule stretches from Sept. 28 to Oct. 9, encompassing 12 days and 11 nights. Travelers will fly into Santiago, Chile, on Sept 28, commencing the journey with a Santiago city tour. The following day will see an exploration of San Cristobal Hill outside Santiago, including a visit to the National Astronomical Observatory among other historical and cultural sites.

The following day will feature a flight to Easter Island. For several days we will explore this magical place, which is home to 7,750 people on a landmass of about 63 square miles. On Oct. 2, our group will observe the annular eclipse from this amazing place, and the possibilities for eclipse photos are mind-numbing. (We’ll certainly incorporate those incredible statues!)

From Easter Island, the duration of annularity is significant — 5 minutes and 48 seconds. Following the eclipse, we’ll have a wonderful and relaxing day on Easter Island before heading back to Santiago.

The adventure then continues. We will head to Valparaiso, Chile’s great historic city and oldest port. Museums, amazing architecture, and historical treasures await us here. For some, after 8 days, the adventure will conclude. An extension, however, can carry travelers to San Pedro de Atacama, center of astronomy enthusiasts who gather in the Atacama Desert, the greatest skygazing location on Earth. Adventures in the Atacama will include touring the incredible ALMA radio telescope array as well as dark-sky observing. We will also spend an incredible day touring the El Tatio Geysers, a geological treasure of the planet.

I’m very excited about this adventure. For complete details on the trip, see https://www.eclipsetraveler.com/tour/2024-chile-easter-island-annular-solar-eclipse/

I hope to see you there!
