Incontournables : les 3 Tours à La Rochelle

Classées Monuments Historiques depuis 1879

La tour saint-nicolas .

Une légende raconte que la tour St-Nicolas a été construite par la fée Mélusine. Alors qu’elle volait au-dessus de La Rochelle avec les pierres d’un château détruit, son tablier se déchira. Les pierres en tombant les unes sur les autres auraient formé la tour Saint-Nicolas…

Cette tour dont la date de construction n’est attestée par aucun document historique, constitue avec la tour de la Chaîne, une porte d’entrée du Vieux Port de La Rochelle. Elle a rempli pendant des siècles la fonction de verrou défensif du front de mer de la ville. Véritable « donjon urbain » et demeure palatiale tournée vers l’océan, cet édifice militaire symbolise la puissance et la richesse de La Rochelle.

La tour achevée en 1376 et haute de 38 mètres, est bâtie sur de longs pieux de chêne enfoncés dans la vase et calés par des pierres. Mais durant sa construction la tour s’enfonce dans le sol instable et penche vers le Nord-Est. Elle est alors renforcée et à partir du 2ème étage, elle retrouve son aplomb. On aperçoit encore aujourd’hui ce léger déséquilibre.

La Tour de la Chaîne

Après l’achèvement de la tour Saint-Nicolas, la municipalité fait édifier la tour de la Chaîne de 1382 à 1390. Son nom provient de la grosse chaîne en fer qu’il fallait manœuvrer avec un treuil pour permettre l’entrée et la sortie des navires dans le Vieux Port . Le Capitaine de la Tour surveillait ainsi les mouvements des bateaux et percevait les droits et taxes de passage.

En 1472, la tour reçoit la visite du Roi Louis XI. Une légende raconte qu’il aurait gravé une inscription sur une vitre de la tour avec le diamant qu’il portait au doigt… 

Alors qu’elle sert de poudrière pendant la Fronde (soulèvement contre la monarchie lors de la minorité de Louis XIV), la Tour explose et reste 300 ans à ciel ouvert. D’importants travaux de restauration ont lieu aux XXème et XXIème siècles avec la reconstruction d’un chemin de ronde crénelé, la création d’une nouvelle toiture puis, la restitution de 2 étages à l’intérieur.

La Tour de la Lanterne

Les origines de la tour de la Lanterne remontent à la fin du XIIème siècle. Située à l’angle de la muraille du quartier St-Jean-du-Pérot, dernier phare médiéval de la côte atlantique, elle servit tout au long de son histoire de phare et de prison.

D’abord résidence du « Désarmeur des nef » chargé de désarmer les navires avant qu’ils n’entrent dans le port, elle est ensuite dotée d’une flèche monumentale et d’une lanterne pour guider les marins. Haute de 55 mètres de haut elle est alors visible de tout le pertuis d’Antioche (détroit entre les îles de Ré, Aix et Oléron ) et participe au « Guet de la mer » pour la surveillance militaire de la côte.

A partir du XVIème siècle la tour sert de prison. On y enferme des prisonniers de guerre capturés en mer, des marins, principalement anglais, hollandais et espagnols. Des protestants au moment de la révocation de l’Edit de Nantes y sont également enfermés ainsi que des insurgés vendéens. En 1822, les « Quatre Sergents » meneurs d’un complot visant à renverser le roi Louis XVIII sont arrêtés à La Rochelle, deux d’entre eux sont emprisonnés dans la tour avant d’être guillotinés à Paris… une histoire qui lui vaudra entres autres le surnom de « Tour des 4 Sergents ».

Self-guided tour to visit La Rochelle in 1 day

Here are now the detailed visits to be made on foot in the order of the tourist circuit:

La Rochelle in 1 day – Departure from the historic center

For those who come to La Rochelle by car, the most practical for parking and doing my tour is the Verdun car park . It is just 450 meters from the Market Square in the city center.

From the Verdun car park, I suggest you start with a stroll in the historic center of La Rochelle.

Head to the Rue Rambaud then going towards the market (see detail below), you will admire the old streets lined with arcades and beautiful mansions.

Unmissable stop on my walking tour: Les Halles from the 19th century where the La Rochelle market is held. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the market is a place to go to enjoy good local products and taste oysters with a glass of white wine.

This historic place (1st meat hall in 1836) is part of the heritage of La Rochelle.

The Maubec Gate

By following my itinerary, you will discover the Porte Maubec which is a vestige of the old Protestant enclosure from the 17th century.

As you head towards the Cathedral, you will pass the magnificent Hôtel de Ville which resembles a fortified castle.

A jewel of the Renaissance, it suffered a fire in 2013 but was rehabilitated and the interior of the monument is even open to visitors.

Saint Louis Cathedral

This cathedral was formerly the Protestant Grand Temple of the city of La Rochelle. It was transformed into a Catholic religious building in 1648 after the long siege of 1928 and the victory of the Catholics against the Protestants.

The Big Clock

You will pass through the Big Clock which is the old gate which separated the port from the medieval city. This monument cannot be visited.

La Rochelle in 1 day – Visit the old Port

The Old Port of La Rochelle dates from the 13th century. It is the emblematic place of the coastal city. At the time of the Middle Ages, it was a fortified port of which there remain beautiful ramparts and 3 magnificent tours who guarded the port.

The three towers of La Rochelle are essential monuments when visiting the city. They were designed in the Middle Ages for military purposes but later they were also used as prisons.

The Lantern Tower

It is the oldest lighthouse on the Atlantic coast. Restored in 2015, it is the tallest tower of the 3 with 55 meters in height!

The Saint-Nicolas Tower

It is about a military building which was intended to defend the city. Today, this building can be visited because it houses a museum.

The Chain Tower

This 3rd tower was the gateway to the port. It was built to monitor boat traffic in the harbor.

La Rochelle in 1 day – Visit to the Saint-Sauveur church

Without wasting too much time, by following my itinerary on foot, you can stop off at Saint-Sauveur Church.

La Rochelle in 1 day – The aquarium and the Maritime Museum

The La Rochelle Aquarium opposite the Old Port is renowned as very beautiful and worth a visit (when possible). Home to more than 12000 species, this aquarium exhibits the biodiversity of wildlife and the seabed from around the world.

To continue the program of visits to La Rochelle, I recommend the maritime museum. At the very end of the port, Place Bernard Moitessier, it is open to visitors.

There are 3 exhibition spaces which retrace the maritime history of La Rochelle. And you can enter some boats as in the emblematic France 1.

La Rochelle in 1 day – End with the Parc des Pères

It is perhaps one of the most pleasant places in La Rochelle: the Parc des Pères. A little away from the old town, if you don't want to walk, the park is served by bus line 4.

This is the last stop on my tour because it is a very pleasant place, especially at the end of the day for the view of the Ocean! Indeed, when the view is clear, we can distinguish the island of Aix, the island of Oléron, Fort Boyard and Fort Enet.

The lighthouse at the End of the World, which can be seen from the Parc des Pères, is a lighthouse which is the copy of the lighthouse at the end of the world in Patagonia.

You can see it during a walk from the port of Minimes or by crossing to reach Fort Boyard.

What to do for a weekend in La Rochelle?

You won't have time to visit the islands off La Rochelle in just 1 day. But, if you have the chance to spend an entire weekend in La Rochelle, I recommend that you plan a small cruise. Indeed, La Rochelle is the starting point towards the numerous islands such as Ile de Ré, Aix and Oléron or even towards the Fort Boyard .

If you are by car, you can also reach Ile de Ré by crossing the Ile de Ré bridge (€ 16). There, the most beautiful beaches are located in the south of the island (Le Bois Plage en Ré or La Couarde sur Mer) or in the north, between Saint Clément des Baleines and Les Portes en Ré.

Histoire des tours de La Rochelle

Découvrez l’histoire des tours de La Rochelle, situées au cœur de la ville de La Rochelle : la tour Saint-Nicolas, la tour de la Chaîne et la tour de la Lanterne, emblèmes de la ville depuis le Moyen Âge.

Trois tours puissantes !

Un peu d'histoire.

Dressées face à l’Atlantique, les trois tours de La Rochelle, Saint-Nicolas (XIV ème siècle), la Chaîne (XIV ème siècle) et la Lanterne (XII ème et XV ème siècles), sont les vestiges d’un programme de fortifications médiévales de grande ampleur édifiées par la ville.

La tour Saint-Nicolas et la tour de la Chaîne constituent la porte d’entrée du Vieux-Port . Leur fonction est principalement défensive . Une chaîne relie même les deux tours à l’époque ! Elles sont conçues chacune comme un donjon . Dans chaque tour réside un capitaine , nommé par le maire de La Rochelle, avec sa famille, et des soldats sous ses ordres.

La tour de la Lanterne a, quant à elle, plusieurs rôles successifs . Son capitaine contrôle et désarme les navires qui entrent dans le port . Elle sert de phare et d'amer (point de repère maritime) avec sa grande flèche. À partir du XVI ème siècle, la Marine Royale la transforme en prison pour les corsaires . Au XIX ème siècle, elle devient une prison militaire . Voilà pourquoi vous aurez la surprise d’y découvrir plus de 600 graffitis gravés par les détenus .

Les tours de La Rochelle sont classées monuments historiques depuis 1879. À partir de cette date, des campagnes de restauration se succèdent jusqu’à aujourd’hui encore.

La tour Saint-Nicolas ou la tour qui penche

La légende de la tour saint-nicolas.

La légende raconte que la tour Saint-Nicolas a été construite par la fée Mélusine . Alors qu’elle volait au-dessus de La Rochelle avec les pierres d’un château détruit, son tablier se déchira. Les pierres en tombant les unes sur les autres auraient formé la tour Saint-Nicolas.

La construction

Si sa date de construction n’est attestée par aucun document historique, les dernières recherches archéologiques menées indiquent un début des travaux vers 1340.

Des travaux qui commencent mal !

La tour est bâtie sur de longs pieux de chêne enfoncés dans la vase et calés par des pierres. Mais durant sa construction la tour s’enfonce dans ce sol instable et penche vers le Nord-Est. Grâce à l’élargissement de sa base et des fondations, ainsi que l’ajout d’une tour servant de contrefort, elle est renforcée. Elle retrouve son aplomb à partir du deuxième étage.

Il paraît même qu’on projetait de construire une arche entre la tour Saint-Nicolas et la tour de la Chaîne !

La tour est achevée en 1376 et porte alors le nom de « tour de la Chayenne » (chaîne) ou grosse tour de la Chaîne. Depuis, son air penché la rend unique, comme celle de Pise !

Au XV ème siècle le nom de la tour est modifié en hommage à Saint-Nicolas, protecteur des marins, des gens de mer… comme le quartier Saint-Nicolas avec son église dont relève la tour.

L’architecture complexe de la tour Saint-Nicolas

Elle combine espaces défensifs et résidentiels , avec un système de double circulation. 

La tour est conçue dès sa construction pour servir à la fois de résidence pour le capitaine et sa famille, et de défense militaire avec la présence de soldats. Le capitaine prêtait serment de ne jamais quitter la tour pendant l’année où il en avait la charge.

En 1651, lors des combats de la Fronde, le troisième étage est détruit, bombardé par les troupes royales. La tour ne retrouve un toit qu’en 1670.

Après une restauration extérieure sommaire, la tour est ensuite utilisée comme prison pour les protestants à l’époque de la révocation de l’Édit de Nantes (1685), puis pour les Vendéens durant les guerres révolutionnaires (1793-95).

En 1879, la tour Saint-Nicolas est classée monument historique. De 1884 à 1904, elle bénéficie d’une importante restauration.

La tour, propriété des services de l’Armée, est transférée à l’administration des Beaux-Arts en 1905, puis au ministère de la Culture.

Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la tour Saint-Nicolas est occupée par les soldats de l’armée allemande.

La tour est composée de 5 niveaux , qui s’élèvent sur 42 mètres de hauteur . Et le nombre de marches ? Difficile à compter tant les escaliers s’entremêlent et que vous ne passerez jamais par le même chemin ! En moyenne on compte environ 150 marches à monter et un peu moins pour descendre.

La tour de la Chaîne

La tour qui a perdu son toit  .

Après l’achèvement de la tour Saint-Nicolas, la ville de La Rochelle fait édifier la tour de la Chaîne au XIV ème siècle, de 1382 à 1390. La tour, en forme de cylindre de 15 mètres de diamètre, s’élevait à 34 mètres, surmontée d’un toit en poivrière. 

À l’origine, « tour de la Chaîne » désigne un ensemble de bâtiments composé de la grosse tour de la Chaîne et de la petite tour de la Chaîne (face à la tour Saint Nicolas), et d’un corps de bâtiment les reliant. Une grosse chaîne en fer manœuvrée par un treuil  permet de contrôler l’accès des navires et de fermer l’accès au port. Retrouvée au fond du port au XIX ème siècle, elle est encore visible au pied de la tour. 

Comme à la tour Saint-Nicolas, un capitaine réside dans la tour. Il surveille les mouvements des bateaux et le trafic du port. Il fait percevoir les droits et les taxes, dont les armateurs rochelais sont dispensés. 

En 1472, la tour reçoit la visite du roi Louis XI. La légende raconte qu’il aurait gravé une inscription sur une vitre de la tour avec le diamant qu’il portait au doigt. La tour devient alors la résidence du gouverneur de la ville. 

De 1568 à 1628, La Rochelle est une ville protestante . L’Amiral de Coligny, qui y réside épisodiquement avec les hauts dignitaires protestants, lance l’idée de créer dans la tour un mémorial funéraire protestant. 

En 1651, lors de la Fronde , les soldats quittent la tour de la Chaîne en mettant le feu au stock de poudre qui y était déposé. L’explosion détruit les planchers et la toiture. La tour reste ensuite à l’abandon pendant trois siècles. 

Au XIX ème siècle, la tour est arasée aux 3/4 de sa hauteur. De 1811 à 1824, pour élargir l’entrée du port, la petite tour et le bâtiment attenant sont démolis. À leur emplacement, un bastion est construit. 

D’importants travaux de restauration ont lieu aux XX ème et XXI ème siècles avec la reconstruction d’un chemin de ronde crénelé, la création d’une nouvelle toiture, puis la restitution de deux étages à l’intérieur. 

La tour est composée de 4 niveaux, fait 20 mètres de hauteur et compte une soixantaine de marches.

La tour de la Lanterne

Du phare à la prison .

Les origines de la tour de la Lanterne remontent à la fin du XII ème siècle. Située à l’angle du quartier Saint-Jean-du-Perrot, une tour cylindrique de trois niveaux est construite à l’emplacement de la tour actuelle. Le capitaine qui y vit est surnommé « le Désarmeur des nefs » car il est chargé de vérifier que les navires entrent sans armes dans le port. La tour de la Lanterne contrôle l’accès au port primitif de La Rochelle. 

Au XV ème siècle, la ville de La Rochelle décide de modifier la tour. Les travaux commencent en 1445 et s’achèvent en 1468 grâce au financement du maire Jehan Mérichon. La tour primitive est enveloppée par une nouvelle tour . Mais la belle voûte de la salle basse est heureusement conservée ! La nouvelle tour est surmontée d’une grande flèche servant d’amer pour les navires, et dotée d’une lanterne servant de phare . Des vitres protègent le feu qu’on y allume. D’où le nom de tour de la Lanterne.

À partir du XVI ème siècle, la tour sert de prison . 

En 1568, pendant les guerres de Religion, treize prêtres catholiques sont massacrés et jetés à la mer. 

En 1632, par manque d’entretien, la lanterne s’écroule et la tour perd sa fonction de phare. Aux XVII ème et XVIII ème siècles des prisonniers de guerre y sont enfermés, principalement des marins, des corsaires anglais, hollandais ou espagnols destinés à être échangés contre les corsaires français prisonniers à l’étranger. Des protestants, au moment de la révocation de l’Édit de Nantes (1685), puis des insurgés vendéens en 1793-1795 y sont incarcérés.

La tour de la Lanterne est ensuite utilisée comme prison militaire à partir de 1820. En 1822, les « Quatre Sergents » , membres d’un complot visant à renverser le roi Louis XVIII, sont arrêtés à La Rochelle. Deux d’entre eux sont emprisonnés dans la tour. Tous sont guillotinés à Paris. 

Les prisonniers ont laissé de nombreux graffiti (plus de 600 répertoriés) qui témoignent de la constitution des flottes de guerre et de commerce et livrent de nombreux détails sur les gréements, les coques et les armements des navires de ces époques. 

On trouve également des croix, des noms, des dates, des textes… 

Au fil de son histoire, la tour a connu plusieurs dénominations ou surnoms : « tour du Désarmeur des nefs », « tour du Fanal », « tour du Phare », « tour du Garrot », « tour des prêtres », « tour des Quatre Sergents ». 

La tour de la Lanterne a été restaurée de 1900 à 1914 avec une galerie recréée à mi-hauteur et la création d’un lanternon néogothique à la place du phare médiéval. 

En 1985, dans le cadre d’une commande artistique de l’État, les artistes Jean-Pierre Pincemin (artiste français 1944-2005) et Gottfried Honegger (artiste suisse 1917-2016) créent des œuvres contemporaines encore visibles à ce jour. 

De 2013 à 2015, une grande campagne de restauration de la tour est réalisée. 

La tour est composée de 8 niveaux et s’élève à 58 mètres . La galerie accessible au public est à 38 mètres de hauteur . Il vous faudra grimper 162 marches pour arriver au sommet. Prêts ? C'est parti !

La Pallice is a commercial port situated 6 km to the west of the historic fortress port of La Rochelle.

From the ship you have a nice view of the bridge to Ile de la Re.

This is a commercial port with little (temporary) facilities. There is nothing within walking distance. La Sirene bus stop, which is closeby, from which bus line 1 will take you straight to the main bus station at Place de Verdun in La Rochelle. The bus runs every 20 mins, and costs around 2 euro (coins or small bills).

The shuttle bus from the ship to town (10 Euro). This shuttle will be announced shortly before you arrive (the night before) as not to jeopardize the regular excursion sales of the cruise company.

Very few if any taxis around.

La Rochelle is a quaint and delightful place to stroll and shop for a few hours. Plenty of outdoors cafes.

Aquarium de La Rochelle : Near the old port: this is the most popular attraction in La Rochelle, and one of the largest aquariums in Europe. The aquarium newly reopened in 2001 after expanding to become six times larger than it previously was. Today more than 10,000 species of flora and fauna inhabit the aquarium, spread out over two levels. The Aquarium de La Rochelle is 100m from the tourist office.

The exhibits are divided according to body of water: the Caribbean Room, the Atlantic Room, etc. There is also a shark tank where various species of sharks swim in over 1.5 million liters of water. In the Jellyfish Tunnel, you can walk through 360-degrees of jellyfish, who swim above and below you.

The towers of the Vieux Port in the rich and powerful town of La Rochelle are remarkable examples of military and palatial architecture. They provide splendid views of the harbor and nearby islands from their round galleries. The Tour Saint-Nicolas guards the gateway to this major maritime trading center and symbolizes the alliance between the king and the town. Like its neighbor across the harbor, the Tour de la Chaîne, the tower dates from the 14 th century and was designed by the same architect who built the Chateau de Vincennes.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Boat trips from the harbor to nearby islands are popular - including trips to Ile de Ré and Ile d'Oleron. Discover the islands of Aix, Oléron and Ré on the horizon. The island of Ré, linked to La Rochelle by a 2km long road bridge, offers wonderful beaches, great cuisine and biking trails.

An inexpensive way to visit the Ile de Re is by bus number 3 from the main railway station (200m from the tourist office, from where the timetable is available). An all day adult ticket cost just 5 Euros, and with this you are able to explore the whole island, and return. Journey time to St Martin's picturesque town harbor is about one hour.

On a shore tour you can explore by boat the serene rural waterways of the 'Green Venice' national park - or relax on one of the lovely beaches of the nearby Ile de Re.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Most shops, businesses, information services, museums and banks in France stay open all day. The exceptions are the smaller shops and enterprises, which may close for lunch sometime between 12.30pm and 2pm. Basic hours of business are from 8 or 9am to 6.30 or 7.30pm Monday to Saturday for the big shops and Tuesday to Saturday for smaller shops (some of the smaller shops may open on Monday afternoon). You can always find boulangeries and food shops that do stay open, however, on days when others close – on Sunday normally until noon.

There's plenty to do in La Rochelle on a sunday, especially in the summer. (Boat trips to the islands, and the town beach). The Aquarium is open all year round and has a great top floor restaurant. The Natural History Museum is well worth a visit. Like most towns in France, Sundays are quite sleepy, the shops are shut but restaurants are usually busy with families getting together for sunday lunch

La Rochelle is a port city in southwestern France, located on Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean). It is also the capital of Charente-Maritime department. Since 1988, the town is connected to Ile de Re (island) via 3-km (2-mi) long bridge. Port's harbor opens into Pertuis d'Antioche - a protected strait separating Re Island (north) from Oleron Island (south). The town has population around 80,000 and total area approx 28 km2 (11 mi2).

City's best-known attraction is its picturesque "Old Harbour" ("Vieux Port") - located in downtown and lined with top-quality seafood restaurants. Old Town's walls are part of the waterfront promenade. Departing from the harbor, boat tours link to Ile d'Aix and Fort Boyard (stone fortress). Ile de Re is at a short drive to the north.

The surrounding countryside is rural. The marshy area Venise Verte is to the north, crisscrossed with small canals and a well-known resort for inland boating. Re Island is accessible through the sea bridge. OFP La Rochelle (freight railway) serves the seaport. Popular landmarks include St-Louis Cathedral, Orbigny-Bernon Museum, Museum d'Histoire Naturelle.

For season 2020, the cruise port had scheduled 18 ship calls with expected around 23, 000 tourists (passengers and crew). In 2018 were handled 13 ship calls and around 9,000 tourists.

La Rochelle port's cruise terminal is new (2012-built) and can handle vessels of any size and passenger capacity (even world's largest liners ). The terminal is located at approx 25-min drive distance from downtown. For each ship call, bus shuttle service is provided.
