If you're visiting for the first time, taking one of the Rome bus tours around the city can be a great way to get a lay of the land and spot some famous landmarks right off the bat.

city sightseeing bus in front of Colosseum

Is this the best way to spend a day in Rome ? Your first day in Rome?

Learn about the ins and outs, the pluses and minuses of taking a Rome bus tour, and whether it's right for you.

Rome bus tours - Everything you need to know

Most of the bus tours in Rome are hop-on-hop-off tours.

On this page we'll cover:

  • Overview of the hop-on-hop-off tours in Rome

What route do the bus tours follow?

  • What will you see on a Rome bus tour?
  • What to expect on a Rome bus tour and how to decide if you should take one
  • How much do the hop-on-hop-off bus tours cost?
  • How and where to buy tickets for the hop-on-hop-off Rome bus

Tips for making the most of your bus tour in Rome

Are the bus tours in rome accessible, other types of rome bus tours you can take, overview of hop on hop off bus tours in rome.

hop on hop off buses in Rome

Taking a hop-on hop-off bus tour can be the perfect way to get an overview of the city, especially those that offer an open air bus tour Rome option.

You can get on and off the bus as often as you like, so you can explore the sights that interest you most at your own pace. All the operators offer bus tours of Rome in English as well as other languages.

This is the most common type of bus tour in Rome and there are many companies offering this tour with pretty much the same itinerary.

So let's talk first about the itinerary of these tours and what you can see from the bus, and what you can see by getting off the bus.

The most common route for Rome Italy hop on hop off bus tours is:

  • Start of route - Termini station
  • Stop 2: Santa Maria Maggiore
  • Stop 3: Colosseum
  • Stop 4: Circus Maximus
  • Stop 5: Piazza Venezia
  • Stop 6: Vatican
  • Stop 7: Piazza di Spagna/ Spanish Steps
  • Stop 8: Piazza Barberini/Via Veneto

This route takes you to or near most of the major tourist attractions in Rome.

What tourist attractions can you see on a Rome bus tour?

The buses cannot go near some of Rome's must-see sites but they do have stops nearby.

So on the route above, besides the obvious sites listed there, you can also see:

Santa Maria Maggiore stop

rome city sightseeing bus in front of santa maria maggiore

Of course, you can (and should!) visit the stunning basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . If you have time, you could also visit a hidden jewel of a church just around the corner from Santa Maria Maggiore, the basilica of Santa Prassede.

You may also wish to explore the charming Monti neighborhood .

Colosseum and Roman Forum stop

If you actually visit the Colosseum , your ticket includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill as well.

You may want to do this as part of your hop-on-hop-off ticket (you can purchase them as a combo), or you can just use the bus tour to get a quick view and then come back later for a complete walking tour of Ancient Rome.

Other sites in the area include the basilica of San Clemente, the Roman Houses at Celio, and the basilica of Saint Peter in Chains where you can see Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses.

Piazza Venezia Stop

Via dei Fori Imperiali, Via del Corso (shopping), Mamertine Prison, Capitoline Museums, and Capitoline Hill

Vatican City

st peter's basilica

If you stay on the double decker bus, you will glimpse Saint Peter's Basilica . But of course, there is so much to see in Vatican City .

If you decide to get off the bus at the Vatican stop, you can visit Castel Sant'Angelo , the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel , Saint Peter's Square , Saint Peter's Basilica , and Saint Peter's Dome . The bus ticket does not include entrance tickets to any locations, so you will need to purchase these separately, such as those for the Vatican Museums .

Piazza di Spagna/Spanish steps

spanish steps crowds

The Spanish Steps are a must-see tourist attraction by themselves but there is also a lot to see nearby.

Besides being the main shopping area of Rome, you can also visit Piazza del Popolo, Trevi Fountain , the Pantheon , and Piazza Navona .

Piazza Barberini/Via Veneto

From the bus, you can spot Bernini's Triton fountain but if you get off the bus you can easily also visit the famous Capuchin Crypt, the Trevi Fountain , and the Palazzo Barberini museum.

What to expect on a Rome hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tour

Most of these buses are open on top but also have a closed lower level.

The tour typically includes an audio guide in a variety of languages.

Some of the companies will also have live guides on the bus who give commentary in multiple languages.

Many of the companies say they offer free wi-fi onboard, but I would not always count on this.

You can board the bus from any of the stops and get on and off as much as you want in the time frame of the ticket you buy. (Often there are options for 24, 48, or 72 hours.)

If you stay on the bus, the entire loop takes around 1 ½ hours.

The ticket will also include a map of the city.

You can generally find discounts online if you book in advance .

Downsides of taking a hop-on-hop-off tour bus in Rome:

Is there a downside? Here are a few issues to be aware of:

  • Although they say the buses come every 30 minutes, it may not always be the case and you could find yourself waiting a while for your bus. You may not be able to get on another company's bus and will have to wait for your own company's bus to come.
  • The buses can get very crowded, especially in the summer. You may even find that there is no room available and you'll have to wait for the next bus to arrive.
  • You may find it difficult to hear the audio guide if you are sitting on top of the bus.
  • Some online comments have mentioned that it can be difficult to find the bus stop although I usually see them pretty well when I am walking around Rome.
  • The bus routes do not cover all of the city, so for sights like the Appian Way (including the catacombs ), Galleria Borghese , and others further outside of the center, you will need to find an alternative route.

bus stop in Rome

Should you take a Rome bus tour?

Given the above pluses and minuses, you may be wondering if the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus is worth it.

One important thing to note is that it's not the same as using the public transport system .

The Rome bus and metro system is considerably cheaper and much more flexible in terms of schedules and routes.

So I would not consider taking the hop-on-hop-off bus as a means to just "get around Rome."

It is meant specifically to be a sightseeing tour with strategic stops that allows the visitor to get between some of the main sites in Rome .

The hop-on-hop-off bus in Rome is for you if...

I recommend a Rome hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour if it's your first time in Rome, whether you have 1 day or a week .

What I would suggest is to stay on the bus for the entire loop so you really get a lay of the land.

This is also a great option if you are jet-lagged, because you don't have to tire yourself out with a walking tour and you can absorb as much as your body and sleepy brain will allow.

Then, the second time around (or the next day), you can get off at any of the stops that interest you and explore more.

Or, if you're done with the bus tour, you can then decide to explore more on your own on foot or take some walking tours.

And, if you have limited time in Rome , this can be a great option to ensure you at least get a glimpse of all of the major sights .

The hop-on-hop-off bus in Rome tour may not be for you if...

If you love walking and want to make your own way, Rome is fairly compact and easy to walk around.

While Rome is actually hillier than you might think (7 hills of Rome!), it's still pretty easy to cover a lot of ground on foot. (Don't forget to wear super comfortable shoes!)

You may also not want to deal with the crowds on the bus or having to wait for the bus to come at the different stops.

Finally, as I mentioned above, if what you're looking for is the best Rome public transportation option , then this is not the bus for you.

How much do the Rome hop-on hop-off tours cost?

Most of the Rome hop-on-hop-off bus tour companies offer various ticket options depending on the number of days you want to use the pass, the age of the passenger (adult vs. child), and any add-ons or bundles you may wish to include.

Typically a 1-day adult ticket costs around 27-30€

Typically children aged 5-15 pay around 13-15 Euros.

I say "usually" and "around" because there are often discounts when you book tickets together, and when you book online in advance.

In most cases, you can purchase 1, 2, and 3-day passes. You can also get family passes.

Often you can add on a tour and/or ticket. See below for more details about bundles.

The best way to book a Rome sightseeing tour

Can you buy your hop-on-hop-off sightseeing tour tickets on the bus.

Most bus companies do offer the option to purchase your ticket directly on board or at a kiosk near the stop.

However, keep in mind that during high season the Rome hop-on hop-off tours sell out quickly and you may find there is no room to board.

Can you pay with credit card? Even American Express?

For answers to these and other money-related issues, visit my comprehensive guide about Money in Rome.

Booking your hop-on-hop-off tickets online

If you can plan ahead, the best way to purchase your hop-on-hop-off tickets is by booking online in advance.

First of all, you'll often get a discount this way.

Second of all, as I mentioned above, sometimes in high season, you may find there is no room on board if you just show up.

The hop-on-hop-off tour of Rome can be fun and interesting if you plan it right.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your tour:

What to wear

Wear comfortable shoes as you may be doing a lot of walking if you get off at any of the stops.

The weather in Rome can be quite hot in the summer , so definitely bring sunscreen and a hat or scarf to cover your head and shoulders.

No matter what season you visit Rome, here are 4 things never to leave at home:

Hydro Flask 24 oz Standard Mouth with Flex Cap Stainless Steel Reusable Water Bottle Lupine - Vacuum Insulated, Dishwasher Safe, BPA-Free, Non-Toxic

Disclosure: If you make a purchase through a link on this page, I may receive a small commission - at no extra cost to you. Thank you for supporting my site!

Gadgets to bring

I know I don't need to tell you to bring your smartphone and/or camera, but don't forget to also bring a spare battery for your camera, and a charger for your phone.

If you have an e-reader or tablet, consider bringing that as well so you can look up things about the sights you are seeing as you go along.

A water bottle is also a good idea , especially in the summer .

You can always refill it at one of the bus stops, from one of Rome's many drinking fountains - the ideal way to stay cool and hydrated!

Keep your valuables close to you - pickpockets do target tourists on these buses.

Better yet, travel with a pick-pocket-proof backpack.

Visit my page here about staying safe in Rome for more tips.

Book in advance to avoid disappointment.

If you decide to combine the bus tour with some city sightseeing on your own, i.e. you plan to actually get off and on the bus, make sure to have plenty of patience and no major time constraints , as the buses don't always run on schedule.

Yes, but with a caveat.

All the major companies who run the Rome hop-on hop off bus tours state on their websites that 'most' of their buses are accessible .

Most of the buses I see around the city are modern vehicles with wheelchair and step-free access available, but some do appear older.

I would recommend contacting your preferred bus company in advance to check they can accommodate your needs.

If you're looking for a walking tour of Rome, you'll find those on many other pages on this site.

And while this page is mostly about taking the hop-on-hop-off bus in Rome, there are a few other types of bus tours you may find useful/interesting, including trips further afield, like bus tours from Rome to Pompeii :

Rome Big Bus Visitor Tips and Guidelines

  • Know before the tour begins which attractions you want to explore further. The bus will stop at every designated stop but if you're not aware of what the attraction entails, you wouldn't know whether to explore it or not. Avoid this confusion and be prepared beforehand.
  • The buses across different routes arrive at different frequencies. To avoid wasting time waiting for the next bus, be aware of the frequency and go to the stop only when you know a bus is scheduled to arrive.
  • While the Big Bus Rome tour stops as close to the attractions as possible, there's still a fair bit of walking involved. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hat or sunglasses along if you're visiting during the summer season.
  • The Big Bus Rome tour happens on an open-deck bus and it can get pretty windy, especially during the evening. Bring a light jacket along to stay comfortable throughout the journey.
  • If you're confused between different tour operators, make the route and price your biggest consideration. The operator that stops at landmarks that interest you would be a better choice.
  • Don't plan anything immediately after your Big Bus Rome tour ends. The bus will drive through some of the busiest parts of Rome and there might be a delay of 10-15 minutes depending on the particular day. Keep a buffer of at least 30 minutes between your tour and the next activity.

Online Tickets in Rome

A quick look online will show you that there are a lot of ticket options to choose from when you are planning your Rome vacation and some important choices to make.

To help you decide which tickets are the right for you, we’ve put together a guide to everything you need to know, from getting to Rome to the most popular excursions and choosing the Colosseum tickets that are right for you.

Tourist Passes

Tourist passes can be a great way to save you time and money when you are on holiday. Some will allow you to book everything in one go, others are a little more complicated.

Let’s take a look at 3 of the most popular passes available in Rome and what they can offer you.

1. Roma Pass

The Roma Pass is an initiative of the Rome City Council. It is the cheapest of the passes and includes free access to the city’s transport network .

What’s Included?

  • 1 or 2 free entrances of your choice, including the Colosseum
  • Free access to buses , trams , and metro lines (excluding airport transfers )
  • Discounts to museums , events, sightseeing buses , guided tours , bike rentals, and more
  • Free access to the P-Stops (public toilets)
  • Can be purchased online or in Rome

How Does It Work?

You can buy your Roma Pass online or in person once you arrive. This is a physical card, and even if you pay online, you’ll need to pick up your pass from one of the many collection points around the city.

You can choose a 48-hour pass or a 72-hour pass. The pass includes 1 (48hr pass) or 2 (72hr pass) free entrances. Some of the sites you can visit, like the Colosseum or Galleria Borghese , require you to go to their website and book a timeslot for a small booking fee. No museums are guaranteed to be available when you buy the pass, and options don’t include the Vatican Museums , Sistine Chapel , or Colosseum underground.

The main advantage of the card is that it is also a travel pass, and you won’t need to worry about buying Rome tickets for every trip.

Other benefits are free access to the city’s public toilets (known as P-Stops) located in some of the most popular areas and monuments and discounts for many exhibitions, events, and services around the city, such as luggage storage, bike rental, Hop-on Hop-off buses, urban adventures, and guided tours.

Where Can I Get The Roma Pass?

At the airports , metro station ticket offices (not available at all stations), tourist information points , and P-Stops .

Is This Card For Me?

The Roma Pass is a good option if you are planning on visiting Rome by public transport.

2. Omnia card

The Omnia card is great if you want to focus on Rome’s religious history.

  • Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel
  • Carcer Tullianum
  • Catacombs of St. Callixtus
  • St. John Lateran
  • Hop-on, Hop-off Rome & Vatican buses

How does it work?

The 24hr card gives you skip-the-line access to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, as well as St. John Lateran (Rome’s cathedral), the Carcer Tullianum prison where St. Peter was held, the catacombs of St. Callixtus and the Hop-on, Hop-off Open Bus.

The 72hrs card doesn’t include the catacombs, but it is combined with the Roma Pass (adults only) and gives you access to the city’s transport network, free entrance to 2 other sites of your choice, and numerous discounts.

Where Can I Get the Omnia card?

Buy your ticket online and book the times you want for each visit. You can also add discounted tours of the Vatican Museums and St. John Lateran.

Pick your card up at one of the official collection points in St. Peter’s Square or outside St. John Lateran.

Is This The Card For Me?

The 2 Omnia cards are quite different, and you should check carefully which will suit you best as they are non-refundable.

The 24h card will let you spend a day (or 2 half days) visiting the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, seeing some of Rome’s many beautiful churches by bus, and taking a tour of one of the catacombs (not on the bus line). While the 72hr card is a great option if you want a wider choice of Rome and Vatican sites, and it gives you free access to the transport network.

3. Rome Tourist Card (TicketBar Pass)

Rome tourist card is a 100% digital option to visit Rome’s most visited sites.

What’s included?

  • Colosseum , Palatine , and Forum with multimedia experience
  • Vatican and Sistine Chapel with an audio guide

Where Can I Buy the Tourist Card?

A great advantage of this pass is that you won’t need to pick up a card when you arrive in Rome. Buy the card online and receive everything you need by email. No printing is required.

If you only have a short time in Rome and aren’t interested in guided tours, the Rome Tourist Card can be a one-stop booking solution that lets you see the highlights of the city ticket-free.

Popular Rome Attractions

Dream of going underground at the Colosseum or visiting the Vatican Museums after hours?

If you are looking for more than the basic entrance tickets included in the tourist passes, there are plenty of exclusive experiences and offers available when you book your tickets directly or through a tour operator.

Here are some of the best ones to know about before you book your tickets for Rome.

The Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Museums has an amazing selection of tickets which you can buy through their website. These include:

  • guided tours
  • special access outside the regular opening hours
  • entrance combined with breakfast, lunch, or aperitif
  • entrance to off-limit areas of the Vatican Museums
  • tours of the Vatican Gardens
  • combined visits to the Pope’s summer villa at Castel Gandolfo from the Vatican train station

Don’t worry about getting separate tickets for the Sistine Chapel . Michelangelo ’s masterpiece is in the middle of the Museums and included in every entrance ticket.

In the summer months, book your tickets as early as possible, especially for early or after-hours tours, which sell out quickly. Regular entrance tickets are available 2 months in advance, and if you can’t book online, it’s still possible to wait in line and buy a ticket on the day.

The Colosseum

The Colosseum is one of 3 sites in the archaeological park Parco del Colosseo , along with the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. You can choose to visit all the sites or just the Colosseum.

The basic entrance ticket is perfect for seeing the 3 sites, but for those who want to see all the areas which are open to the public, the Full Experience with Colosseum Underground is the best option. This will give you access to the Colosseum, including the arena and underground areas, the Forum, the Palatine, and the S.U.P.E.R sites.

And remember, waiting in line to buy tickets at the Colosseum is no longer an option. All Colosseum tickets are for a fixed time and must be purchased online in advance on the Coopculture website.

Galleria Borghese

Art lovers won’t want to miss Rome’s most elegant art gallery and its wonderful collection of works by Bernini , Canova, and Caravaggio . But Galleria Borghese is the hardest museum in Rome to get tickets for. Only 180 tickets are available each hour, and you have to buy them online on the TicketOne website.

Museums Capitolini

Advanced booking for Museums Capitolini will let you walk straight in here through the priority entrance. There are no timed entrances here, so you can even buy your ticket online when you arrive if there’s a line at the ticket office, though you will have to register with the vivaticket website.

Hop-On, Hop-Off Buses

There are several sightseeing bus companies in Rome to choose from:

  • Big Bus Tours
  • I love Rome City Tour
  • City Sightseeing
  • Greenline Tours (3 routes)
  • Vatican & Rome

They all follow a similar route, starting at Termini Station and ending at the Vatican. First-time visitors find this a great way to see a lot of the city quickly. The bus will take you close to some of the most popular sights in Rome, including the Colosseum, Pantheon , Trevi Fountain , and the Vatican .

Greenline also has 2 additional routes, one going to the world’s largest Eataly store near Ostiense Station (a must for foodies) and the other visiting the museums of the north of Rome.

The Vatican & Rome ticket (or Omnia card) allows you to use their yellow buses, as well as the Big Bus Tours and City Sightseeing buses.

As well as the companies’ websites, you can also get these tickets from online tour operators and at many places around the city. They are available at tourist information points, P-Stops, newsstands, and the staff at the official bus stops.

These buses can be great if you don’t want to walk too much, but Rome has a lot of traffic, and some visitors find the slow progress of these buses very frustrating. There’s no need to buy these tickets in advance as they are always available, so wait until you get to Rome and decide if they are for you.

Guided Tours

With a 2000-year timeline full of hundreds of popes and emperors to get your head around, choosing a guided tour can be a great way to make sense of everything.

There are loads of tours to choose from in Rome , from walking tours of the city center to guided visits to the Vatican & Sistine Chapel, to trips out of town. Once you’ve decided what you’d like to do, book your tour online or through a tour operator.

Walking tours are the most common tours in the city center. You’ll find an amazing selection of tours online for all the major museums and sites and with dedicated itineraries for Rome’s art, history, culture, and food.

But first, you’ll need to decide what type of tour you are interested in:

Group Tours

Planning to take a lot of tours? The group tours will help keep costs down. Once you book the tour, you’ll be given the meeting point where you’ll find your guide, usually holding a sign with the name of the tour company. These kinds of tours always use a radio system so you can hear everything the guide is saying no matter how big the group is.

Small Group Tours

If you like the idea of being with other tourists, but would rather not be in a large group, then a small group tour could be right for you. With fewer than 10 people in a group, these kinds of tours offer lower prices than private tours but a more personal experience than regular group tours, as you can ask questions and interact with the guide.

Private Tours

Hiring a private guide will give you maximum flexibility. Many licensed guides have their own websites where you can contact them directly, or you can find recommendations from happy travelers on TripAdvisor. Private guides will arrange tickets and transportation for you if you want and can tailor the tour to your group and interests.

When you are ready to give your feet a rest, there are other ways to experience the beauty of the Eternal City.

River Boat Cruise

While Rome’s streets are full of traffic, her river is usually empty except for the River Boat Cruise . You can get a 2-day pass and use the 4 stops at Isola Tiberina, Ponte Sisto, Castel Sant’Angelo , and Piazza del Popolo to explore different parts of the city or take a single trip and enjoy the multilingual commentary about the monuments and neighborhoods you are passing.

Golf Cart Tours

This eco-friendly tour option of golf cart tours is the ideal way to navigate some of Rome’s Medieval streets, which aren’t always accessible by cars. If you’re traveling with young children who have had enough of walking, kids love riding on these open buggies and watching the monuments as they pass.

A day trip is a great way to escape the crowds of Rome and see some more of Italy. Here are 5 of the best and easiest excursions from Rome.

  • Ostia Antica

The ancient Roman port is today a fascinating archaeological park just 30 minutes outside Rome. You can enjoy a relaxing stroll around the ruins or join a tour for a more in-depth look, while younger visitors will enjoy running along the ancient roads and climbing the Greek theater.

Less than 1 hour from Rome, the town of Tivoli is home to 2 UNESCO sites: Villa d’Este, a 16 th century villa famed for its water gardens, and Villa Adriana, the country retreat of the emperor Hadrian. Villa Adriana is outside the town, so the easiest way to see both villas is to hire a car or take a tour from Rome.

  • Castelli Romani

The hills to the south of Rome are scattered with picturesque towns famed for their beautiful villas and their wine. One of the easiest to visit is Castel Gandolfo, home to the Pope’s summer palace and a 40-minute train ride from Termini. You can visit the palace and (in summer) its gardens before finding somewhere to have lunch overlooking Lake Albano.

  • Naples and Pompeii

A high-speed train from Termini will get you to Naples in just over an hour. You can then spend the day exploring this stunning city, visiting the underground ruins, castles, palaces, and churches, not to mention tasting the original pizza. It’s also possible to visit the spectacular ruins of Pompeii, which are just 30 minutes south of Naples.

Italy’s Renaissance jewel is small enough that you can see a lot of it in just one day. Do you dream of visiting Uffizi and Michelangelo’s David? Or will you spend your day wandering the old streets, crossing the Ponte Vecchio, and drinking in the beauty of the city before returning to Rome? A high-speed train from Termini will get you to the heart of Tuscany in just 1.5hrs.

Rome Transportation

Buses , trams , and metro tickets.

Although Rome’s metro is easy to understand – there are only 2 lines – there are hundreds of buses connecting every corner of the city.

There’s just one type of ticket that you can use on metros, buses, and trams. You can either buy single tickets for each journey (a ticket is valid for 100 minutes, including 1 metro trip) or get a travel pass for several days.

Both types of tickets can be bought from the machines at metro stations, as well as from tobacconists, newsagents. If you choose to get a Roma Pass, this can be used as a pass for the transport network .

Taking public transport abroad can be daunting, and unless you are staying in the heart of the city and plan to walk everywhere, I’d definitely recommend getting a travel pass to make life easier.

Don’t waste time trying to hail a cab in Rome , they almost never stop.

Either call a taxi from your hotel or go to the nearest taxi rank (look for the orange ‘Taxi’ sign or a line of taxis). There are lots of these around the city, for example, outside Termini, on the corner of Piazza Venezia/Via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza del Popolo/Via di Babuino, and in Piazza di Spagna.

Far more convenient is to use an app to call a taxi to come to you. An app can also come in handy if you want to pay by credit card and the driver claims the machine isn’t working (which happens a lot).

There are fixed rates between the airports and addresses inside the Aurelian Walls. For locations outside the ancient walls that circle the historic center of Rome, the driver will set the meter.

It’s generally easy to find taxis to/from the airports unless there is a public holiday or transport strike.

Flying to Rome

Rome has 2 airports: Fiumicino (FCO) , close to the sea, and the smaller Ciampino in the south-east.

All international flights come into Fiumicino. Flights from around Europe and the UK use both airports, with Ciampino favored by low-cost carriers.

Airport Transfers

Traveling between fiumicino and rome.

Getting to/from Fiumicino by taxi will cost you a fixed price if the other end of your journey is inside the Aurelian Walls. For destinations outside the walls, the driver will set the meter.

There are 3 private bus companies operating buses between Termini and Fiumicino (Terminal 3). You can buy tickets online, or at the bus stop.

  • Terravision

Buses leave from Via Giovanni Giolitti, at the back of Termini close to the Mercato Centrale

Buses leave from Via Giovanni Giolitti and stop at Stazione Ostiense (outside Eataly).

Buses leave from Via Marsala with additional stops at Aurelia and Vatican

There are 2 trains to/from Fiumicino:

  • The Leonardo Express is a direct connection between Termini Station and Fiumicino. It takes 32 minutes.
  • There is another train that leaves from Fiumicino airport and goes out of Rome to the town of Orte. Along the way, it passes Roma Tiburtina, Roma Tuscolana, Roma Ostiense, and Roma Trastevere. It does not stop at Termini. A one-way ticket on this train is more convenient if you are staying in or around Trastevere .

Traveling Between Ciampino and Rome

For Ciampino, there is a fixed rate inside the ancient walls.

Buses stop close to the entrance of the airport and depart Termini from Via Giovanni Giolitti (Terravision) and Via Marsala (S.I.T.)

You can take a train between Termini Station and Ciampino town. For the airport, you need to take an additional bus to get from the railway station to the airport.

The easiest way to do this is to buy a combined ticket for the 2 services from the Trenitalia website by selecting the destination Ciampino Airport. The trip takes 30-45 minutes, depending on the connections.

Rome transport tickets

  • Public Transport

Rome transport tickets

In Rome, visitors can purchase different types of transport tickets and travel cards depending on the number of days they stay in the city and how often they plan on using public transportation there.

Types of transport tickets

One-way ticket (bit).

The BIT ticket lasts 75 minutes since its first validation and allows for unlimited transfers between the metro, buses, trams and urban trains . The only transfer that is not allowed is to leave the metro and return (by the metro turnstiles), even if it’s in the 75 minutes of validity. The ticket costs € 1.50 ( US$ 1.60).

MetroBus 24 hours

This ticket allows unlimited public transportation from the moment the ticket is validated until midnight of the same day. The MetroBus 24 hours costs € 7 ( US$ 7.50).

MetroBus 48 hours

The 48-hour ticket allows unlimited use of Rome's public transport for 48 hours from the time it is first used. The price is € 12.50 ( US$ 13.50) .

MetroBus 72 hours

It allows unlimited use of public transport for 72 hours from the time it is used for the first time. The price is € 18 ( US$ 19.40) .

Weekly pass

If you're going to spend a week in Rome and you plan to use public transport a lot, the ideal option for you is the weekly pass, as you'll be able to use unlimited public transport for 7 days . The price is € 24 ( US$ 25.80) .

Other travel cards

If you’re planning on staying in Rome for a longer period, there are also annual and monthly travel cards.

What means of transport are included?

  • Cotral bus services (within Rome)
  • Urban trains : Rome–Lido, Rome–Viterbo and Rome–Pantano.
  • Trenitalia Regional trains (second class).

Where to buy the travel cards and tickets?

Public transportation tickets in Rome can be bought in vending machines in any metro station, convenience stores or newsagents . There is also a way to buy tickets by SMS , but unless you have an Italian phone number, we do not recommend this option.

Editor’s Pick: What a Life Tours – Skip-the-line Vatican Small Group Tour

Price: Adults from 99 euros (about $108); kids from 94 euros (around $102) Duration: 3 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send Laura Itzkowitz , a freelance journalist based in Rome, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. What a Life Tours – Skip-the-line Vatican Small Group Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

One of the largest – and most crowded – landmarks in the world, the Vatican Museums actually comprises 26 museums, plus various chapels and galleries, so while it’s a must-see attraction, it can be an overwhelming place to visit. The engaging guide leading this skip-the-line tour brought us straight to the highlights, starting with the Pinecone Courtyard and ending in St. Peter’s Basilica , where she showed us Michelangelo’s Pietà and explained why it’s the only work the artist actually signed.

Along the tour, you’ll see masterpieces from the Vatican Museums’ collection, including the ancient statue of Laocoön and his sons; the Belvedere Torso, which inspired Michelangelo; Greek Cross Hall; and the Round Hall, which contains a monumental bronze statue of Hercules. Other highlights include the Gallery of Candelabra; the Gallery of Tapestries; the Gallery of Maps, where the guide pointed out some fun facts about Italy in the 1600s; and the Sistine Chapel. Talking isn’t allowed in the Sistine Chapel, so the guide explained Michelangelo’s frescoes at the beginning of the tour. Our guide shared a deep knowledge of the artworks, and delivered her commentary with a sense of humor. However, the guide didn’t bring us to the Raphael Rooms; if this is a priority for you, you may want to book a different tour.

Tours generally operate Monday through Saturday; the first tour begins at 9:30 a.m. In addition to its variety of Vatican tours, the company also offers tours of the Colosseum and daylong tours of Rome.

Why we love it:

  • Groups are capped at 12 or fewer participants.
  • After the tour, stroll down Via della Conciliazione to capture perfectly framed photos of St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • For a nice lunch nearby, book a table at Ristorante Arlù, a family-run eatery that’s been open since 1959. If the weather is nice, ask for a table outside on the charming cobblestone street.
  • Prati, the neighborhood surrounding the Vatican, is popular for shopping, especially along Via Cola di Rienzo. Stop by il Sellaio di Serafini for a handmade leather bag, or Castroni for espresso and other gourmet foods to bring home.

Reviewers praise guides for their interesting and informed commentary (which tourgoers can hear via audio headsets). Parents are particularly impressed with guides' ability to engage children.

Tours are offered Monday through Saturday multiple times in the morning and afternoon. Maya Tours also operates longer, semiprivate tours of the Vatican.

How to get around in Rome

Find your way around in Rome with this guide to transportation and tickets © TFILM / Getty Images

Whether or not you find it easy to get around Rome  will depend a lot on what your expectations are.

The most important thing to remember is that Rome is old. Like, old. Most of the streets have not been designed to accommodate people, buses, cars or bikes, and the underground network has been built in and around one of the most archaeologically rich locations on earth. The  very things we all come to Rome  to see are the very reason that it takes so long to get around it. Keep that in mind the next time you visit and remember that any confusing detours you go on may end up being the best part of your trip!

Here's what you need to know to find your way around in Rome.

Explore the city on mass transit

Just like any major city, the Eternal One has a comprehensive public transport network of buses, trams, and trains that will take you anywhere you want to go. Of course, they may also take you to a few places you weren’t planning on visiting, so it helps to get yourself familiarized before you’re on the ground. Atac, the company that operates all mass transit in Rome, has undergone a facelift in recent years and though some wrinkles are still visible, it’s a pretty convincing nip and tuck. Visitors can download maps in multiple languages from the Atac website , or download the Moovit app to get real-time info.

Metro line C is best for sightseeing

It’s helpful to remember that the two metro lines A and B mostly travel north and south, with the C line heading further to the east. The C will be one of the most familiar sights if you pass through central Rome: archaeological finds at the Imperial Forum station are so proliferate that it’s taken decades to dig for tracks. As a result, the street between the Colosseum and the Forum is lined with heavy machinery and the promise that “it’ll soon be done.” Don’t hold your breath, but don’t sweat it either, and remember that the street is still open to some traffic, so be mindful when crossing the road.

Trams run east to west

Rome’s six small tram lines are primarily useful for traveling east to west and are a good way to see the Trastevere and Monteverde neighborhoods . The trams are a fun, somewhat nostalgic, slightly nicer way to travel as they tend to avoid a lot of the car traffic. Plus, some vintage trams are still in operation, so may get the chance to catch a bit of retro cool as you go.

The tram system plays an important role in the history of modern Rome and it’s worth getting to know a bit of the background (for all of our transit history fans out there). However, an ongoing improvement project on the number 3 tram line means that you’ll need to take a bus replacement service if you want to get across the Tiber, so some of the convenience, and thus the charm of the trams, might escape you.

Rome's bus network is extensive

But consider that replacement bus service a good way to dip your toe in the vast bus network, which covers the most ground of any part of Rome’s mass transit system. Riding the bus is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the cacophony of the city and though the sheer size of the network might feel intimidating, it’s worth doing.

The Atac signage at almost every bus stop can help you go in the right direction, and the Moovit app has up-to-the-minute timetables that will tell you which direction to look. And as always, don’t be afraid to ask people waiting at the same stop: you may get a few grumbles but you’re much more likely to get someone who will not only tell you whether you’re in the right place but will also make sure you actually get on the right bus.

Tickets are valid on buses, trams and metro lines

Travelers can purchase daily or weekly farecards from machines or kiosks located at the entrance to nearly every metro station, and the Tap and Go system is available to anyone with a contactless card as well as smartphones and smartwatches. You’ll be charged for single rides and each is valid for 100 minutes, as with a standard travel card. While the Tap and Go system has become quite reliable in the past year, it still has its share of hiccups and is occasionally out of service for maintenance. It doesn’t hurt to have a ticket in reserve for just such an occasion. Oh and, the ticket machines don’t give more than €6 in change so be aware before you use a €20 note to pay for a €1.50 ticket!

Tourists stroll along a cobbled street in Rome

Walking is the best way to see some of Rome's key sites

Walking through Rome is as frenetic and romantic as you think it will be, and you’ll see icons at every turn. Much of the ancient center of Rome, which includes sites like the the Colosseum , the Forum  and the Pantheon , is easily within walking distance, and on a nice day, you could cover all of these and much more.

There is always something going on and if you slow down a bit, you’ll find yourself soaking up the ambiance that makes Rome so singular. After all, it’s only by walking that you’d catch the Rose Garden hiding above the Circo Massimo , or the path that winds along the Tiber River. If you want to see Rome for what it truly can be, stop and walk for a while.

Of course, for all its magic, the center of Rome can be extraordinarily congested with foot and car traffic, so navigating these areas sometimes takes a lot of time and even more patience.

Try to avoid peak hours at places that you’re not necessarily going to enter: if you only want to walk around the Colosseum, wait until after it closes at 6pm and the crowds largely dissipate. After all, that’s the magic hour, when the light hits it just right and everything is illuminated with pink and gold hues.

Driving in Rome is best avoided

Here’s the thing. Driving in Italy is an art form, and if you can drive in cities like Rome, you've reached a new level of mastery. Romans drive with an urgency and a logic that will escape everyone else, and while it may seem that they’re aggressive (and they can be) often they’re just moving into openings in traffic that only they can see. Do not attempt to mix in this, as it will inevitably result in confusion on your part and frustration on the part of everyone around you.

Taxis are easy to find

Leave the driving to the professionals, in this case the Romans. Taxis are proliferate, and can be easily ordered via the Free Now app , which will give you fixed rates and allows you to pay through it as well. Uber is also quite reliable around the city and will give you the option of both a taxi or private hire car called an NCC, which stands for Noleggio con Conducente (hire car with driver).

Bikes and scooters are popular, but not always wise

Exercise caution with bikes and scooters in Rome. These have become a popular mode of transportation here just as in other cities around the world. Tours guides are often skilled at helping riders navigate the streets on bikes and scooters, but if you’re not used to riding in busy lanes with uneven sidewalks, you could put yourself (and others) at risk.

Rome is not very accessible

Both the national and municipal governments have been working on improving the city’s infrastructure for people with disabilities, and the ATAC website offers a comprehensive overview of the metro, tram, train and bus services for people with disabilities. According to the ATAC website, 98% of buses are equipped with boarding platforms, 70% of trams have platform level flooring, and the vast majority of metro stations have elevators as well as tactile paths and maps for visually impaired passengers, displays for those with hearing impairments, and Braille messaging. The website also has a handy search function to check whether your station has these services available, and is updated in real time for any service interruptions.

Major sites around the city offer special access to visitors with limited mobility: it’s possible to reserve a wheelchair at the Vatican museums , and the Colosseum has both ramps and elevators to facilitate movement around the monument (that said, the underground parts of the Colosseum are not wheelchair accessible). But there’s no doubt that it’s still slow going on those picturesque cobblestone streets for those with any mobility challenges, including those who might be traveling with small children and strollers. Keep it in mind as you plan your day, and if you’ve got precious cargo in hand try to schedule your iconic visits for off peak hours.
