9. Deoria Tal: The Reflection Lake

Even though there are plenty of popular places as well – from Chamoli, Dehradun, Haridwar, to Pauri, Rudraprayag, Tehri & Uttarkashi. The plethora of places to discover and the sheer beauty of the region will definitely leave you mesmerized.

There’s literally so much to do in Garhwal that any route you take and any destination you choose will be a fulfilling time! But, for the sake of structure – today, I have chosen to describe what a common active itinerary in the region would be like. If adventure and nature are what you seek, I am hopeful my planned trip will be of huge help!

The region is formed entirely of rocky mountain ranges, recognized through separation narrow valleys. While geographical wonders such as Nanda Devi , Kamet, Chaukhamba, and Trisul are found here; the region is truly known for its heart-warming hospitality. Often touted as the “ Heart of Uttarakhand ”, Garhwal truly has a lot to offer and the natural beauty is par excellence!

I should tell you that the below itinerary is for activity seekers and adventure enthusiasts. Of course, the Chota Char Dham Yatra is also quite enthralling and physically demanding. Distances of Important Place – Garhwal Itinerary

In order to cover the below itinerary, there are a few distance points you should be aware of that will help you in planning your travel between the destinations. Of course, given that this trip requires you to have mobility independence – your own personal vehicle or cab would be supremely helpful. However, you can cover the distances through public transport as well! The hours’ journey described below is for personal car driving distance.

• New Delhi to Chamba – 320 km (8.5 hrs)
• Chamba to Kund – 150 km (6 hrs)
• Kund to Kirtinagar – 75 km (2.5 hrs)
• Kirtinagar to Rajaji National Park – 155 km (4.5 hrs)
• Rajaji National Park to New Delhi – 255 km (6.5 hrs)

Chamba is situated at an elevation of 8500 ft. and forms a major town en route Gangotri. The town is only 30 kilometers ahead of Kanatal and 60 km from Mussoorie . Important places to see in Chamba include –

• Tehri Dam , the highest dam of India and one of the highest dams in Asia, is visible from New Tehri. The town was created for relocation after Tehri town got submerged by the Dam.
• Eco Parks situated in Dhanaulti – are a cluster of 2 eco-parks – Amber and Dhara about 200 m apart. It has been developed recently by the Forest Department of Uttarakhand

A riverside settlement about 20 KMs before Guptkashi in the Mandakini Valley, Kund offers stunning views of Kedar mountain – the backdrop of Kedarnath Temple . In fact, Kund forms an important pit stop for many pilgrimages including visiting temples like Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Triyuginarayan, Guptkashi, etc. Main places on your visit this trip would include –

• Ukhimath, a pilgrimage situated at an elevation of 4000 ft., is around 41 km from Rudraprayag. During winters, the idols from the Kedarnath temple and Madhyamaheshwar (Panch Kedar) are brought to Ukhimath.
• Deoriya Tal and Tunganath Trek – the high altitude lake is about a 3 KM trek from the Ukhimath-Chopta road.

Rajaji National Park

Rajaji National Park lies 25 km from Haridwar and 40 KM from Rishikesh. The park is an excellent point for bird watching with over 23 species of mammals and 315 species of birds found here. You can participate in Jeep safaris, arranged by the forest department.

Descriptive Active Garhwal Itinerary

Now, let me take you through the detailed journey plans

Day-1 Delhi – New Tehri (300 Kms, 7 Hours)

[Chamba – Tehri Dam (10.00 kms), Eco Park Dhanaulti (29.00 kms)]

Start your day off as early as possible to reach New Tehri. While the driving time is 7 hours, you’ll be stopping over many places – including the holy towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh . Reach by the evening and rest for the day.

Day-2 Activities and sightseeing

Enjoy the early morning sunrises in the Himalayas! Your views should include the stunning Nanda Devi peak. Today, you should plan on visiting the Eco-Park. Return through the forests at Kanatal . Here, you may enjoy an evening session of rappelling.

Day-3 New Tehri – Kund via Tehri Dam / Lake (155 KMs – 5 hours)

[Kund – Ukhimath (10.00 kms), Deoriya Tal and Tunganath Trek (14.00 kms)]

Depart for Kund early in the AM from Tehri. The hamlet of Kund is situated en route to Kedarnath and also lies in close proximity to Chopta, with some stunning meadows. Today’s journey will include stops at the Tehri Dam and Lake. Once you’re at Kund, I would highly recommend a light hike to the Ukhimath temple and later spending your evening time by the gushing sounds of the river.

Day- 4 Bird watching and Deoriatal Lake trek

Wake up as early as you can to visit the bird-watching spots. I highly recommend doing it pre-sunrise and having an expert accompany you. Also, remember to wear subdued colors! After you’ve had your heart’s fulfillment here, have breakfast and move to Sari village. From here, you will start on your 2-hour trek to the Deroriatal. Trust me when I say this, the lake with the meadows surrounding it will make you forget any troubles in your life!

Day-5 Chopta visit and Tunganath visit. Later in the day, leave for Jayalgarh (70 KMs, 2 hours)

Today’s day starts with a visit to India’s Mini-Switzerland! Here, you can even take a short trek to Tungnath – at an elevation of 3680m. The views from Tungnath are stunning and the Shiva’s shrine is holy and transcendent. Once returning to Chopta, have some snacks and rest up, before commencing on your forward journey. Jayalgarh is a renowned place for some White Water rafting. I suggest waiting till the next day to participating in this activity, however- you’ve had a long enough day as it is! Rest up!

Day-6 Jayalgarh – Rajaji National Park (135 Kms, 4 hours)

Start your day bright and early with a beautiful session of white water rafting! Then, after some rest, some food, take off towards the Rajaji National park. Here, I highly urge you to splurge a little and get a stay at some of the riverside premium lodges! This will offer you some of the most relaxing views and a perfect end to your trip as the last stop! There are a bunch of trails you can explore, though be careful and check the routes before embarking on the journey,

Day-7 Rajaji National Park – Wildlife and Bird Watching in Rajaji National Park (0.50 kms)

This is the day you get to indulge in a jeep safari – and boy, what a day it will be! Also, if you still have energy- you can even squeeze in a visit to Haridwar for the evening Aarti!

Day-8 Depart to Delhi (280 kms – 7 hrs).

The last day of the trip comes so soon, don’t they! I hope this trip was as beautiful for you as it was for me (and writing it was particularly cathartic!). I am sure Garhwal would have been wonderful to you and this will be a journey you’ll remember for a long time!

Popular Extensions to the active Garhwal Itinerary

If you’re keen, you can add another day or 2 to your Garhwal active itinerary, then I highly recommend spending some time in Rishikesh – truly the most tranquil of places and Haridwar for – above all else – some lip-smacking food!

If you want you can even add a trip to Auli further from Tunganath – Chopta – Chamoli route.

Garhwal has a lot to offer and this itinerary obviously will not help you cover the entire place. However, the whole journey of 8-10 days will be life-enriching and stunning, to say the least.

Garhwal Hills, Uttarakhand – A Travel Guide

Uttarakhand, the Abode of Gods aka Devbhoomi is a beautiful northern state of India. It is a land nestled in the majestic Himalayas- Nanda Devi, Panchachuli, Trisul to name a few and locked among the mighty rivers- Ganga and Yamuna in its varied forms. Snow clad mountains, lush green forests, meadows, and valleys come with fresh, non-polluted mountain air. While the state is popular and loved by all people alike for what it has to offer – be it temples, pilgrimage centers, adventure or peaceful getaways, most of the regions in Uttarakhand are still unexplored.

For the last five years, I have been fortunate to explore this land which is mighty rich in its culture and heritage. We were stationed at the Garhwal region before and is now at Kumaon, making us feel humbled and blessed because back to back postings in the same state is definitely kind of a miracle in Defence Forces. 

EXPLORING UTTARAKHAND – THE ABODE OF GODS

Uttarakhand- the administrative division s.

Uttarakhand meaning Northern ( Uttara ) Land ( Khand ) was formerly known as Uttaranchal. It was part of the state of Uttar Pradesh but the BJP government of 2000 headed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee made Uttarakhand a separate state. It has thirteen districts and is broadly divided into two regions, mainly for administrative purposes – the Garhwal division in the west and Kumaon division in the east.  

GARHWAL HILLS, UTTARAKHAND

The Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand gets its name from the word ‘Garh’ meaning the Land of ‘Forts’. It has its name and fame from the Puranic period, having referred in Mahabharata and Skanda Purana. 

HISTORY OF GARHW AL

In the 15th century, King Ajai Pal diminished the minor territories and brought together the 52 separate realms into one kingdom of Garhwal , with each realm having its own ‘Garh’ or fortifications. Ajai Pal and his successors ruled the kingdom for around 300 years. Mind you, it wasn’t a piece of cake. They were under constant attack by the Mughals, Kumaon, and Gorkhas. In the 18th century, the Garhwali soldiers succumbed to the brutal attack of Gorkhas who had also captured Kumaon. 

The 12 years of the reign of Gorkhas is known as Gorkhyani , synonymous to their brutal attacks, massacres, ravage and marauding of armies. They ruled with an iron fist imposing excessive taxation policy, an iniquitous judicial system, slavery, and torture of people.

In the Gurkha War of 1814, the British attacked the Gurkhas and the region of Garhwal and Kumaon came under the British empire. The Garhwal rulers gave 60 percent of their kingdom to the Britishers for their support in chasing the Gorkhas away. Thus, the Britishers ruled in the eastern part of the Garhwal region, then known as the town of Dehra and later became popular as the Dehra’dun’. The western part of Garhwal – the Tehri region was restored to the Garhwal kings. 

CULTURE OF GARHWAL

Garhwal is culturally colorful and the hospitality here is heartwarming. The people of Garhwal region are known as Garhwalis and they primarily speak Garhwali language with varied dialects of its own. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan language and most of the Garhwalis also speak Hindi and Sanskrit. The region celebrates music, dance and a number of festivals and fairs. The folksong ‘ Bedu Pako ‘ is quite famous and yeah, once in a while you can find me humming the tune. 

THE GARHWAL CUISINE

Uttarakhand is popular for its food too. The Garhwali and Kumaoni food is something that you should discover and relish when on a trip to this state. The cuisine is made of simple ingredients, mostly cereals and grains, and local produce. Winter calls for heavy meals. I wait for winters for it brings fresh greens in the form of Fenugreek leaves ( Methi ), Mustard greens ( Rai ), Spinach ( Palak ), Radish Greens ( Mooli ke pathe ) and more.  Mandua (finger millet) ki Roti, Chainsoo (made with black Urad Dal), Phaanoo (made from a mix of different lentils including Gehat ), Rajma , Kafuli (made with spinach and fenugreek leaves) and Jholi (a thin gravy made of potatoes, tomatoes and curd) are some staple food. 

Non-vegetarian foods are loved too, primarily curries ( Jhols ) made with river fish and gravies with red meat and chicken . Dessert options include Jhangore ke Kheer (made from millet) and Arsa (sweet balls made with jaggery and curd).

FLORA AND FAUNA OF GARHWAL 

The meadows, valleys and lush green forests come with rich flora and fauna as well.  The feline family including Tiger, Snow Leopard, and Panther is bountiful in the mountains. You can also spot Jackal, Musk Deer, Bear, Monkey, and Flying Squirrel among many others.

Oh, don’t get me started with birds. One can spot over 400 different varieties of winged creatures including Bulbul, Kingfisher and Jewel Thrush.

From Oak, Fig, Deodar, Pine, Chestnut, and Poplar, to medicinal plants and over 500 varieties of flowers, Garhwal Uttarakhand is home to rich flora. 

PEAKS AND RIVERS OF GARHWAL

A large part of Uttarakhand is occupied by some mighty mountain peaks. A part of the Himalaya Shivalik Hills can be seen in Garhwal mountain ranges.  Chaukhamba peaks come with three mountains and rest at the Gangotri glacier. Swargarohini boasts itself along the Saraswati range in Uttarkashi along with Gaumukh , a treasured glacier. The Shivling and Kedarnath peaks are part of Gangotri.

The two most holy rivers, Ganga and Yamuna have their origin in Uttarakhand.  The Yamuna originates from Yamunotri glacier and is the longest river that does not end up in a sea. The river Yamuna merges with Ganga at the Triveni Sangam in Uttar Pradesh – the confluence of three rivers- Yamuna, Ganga and Saraswati, the latter now believed to be in invisible form. 

The Ganges has many streams including Bhagirathi and Alaknanda and forms the five holy unions in Garhwal Himalayas namely, Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag . Ganga hits the plains at Rishikesh.

POPULAR PLACES TO VISIT IN GARHWAL REGION OF UTTARAKHAND

The districts that fall under Garhwal region are Chamoli, Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, and Uttarkashi.

With lofty snow-covered peaks, enchanting rivers, rich flora and fauna, and sacred temples and pilgrimage centers, the Garhwal division of Uttarakhand gives you the option of relishing and quenching the travel lust in you.

CHARDHAM YATRA

The four pilgrim destinations – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath is collectively known as Char Dham or ‘Four Abodes’. Many thousands of devotees take up this pilgrimage every year where each destination is devoted to one deity. Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, Gangotri to Goddess Ganga, Kedarnath to Lord Shiva and Badrinath to Lord Vishnu. The pilgrimage is considered to complete only if one follows this exact order, commencing from Yamunotri towards Gangotri, Kedarnath and finally at Badrinath. You are to experience Moksha/inner peace and absolute bliss after taking up this spiritual journey.

Counted as one of the seven holy places for Hindus, Haridwar aka Gateway of God is situated at the base of the Shivalik Range of Himalayas. Come June and July, millions of Lord Shiva Devotees gather to attend the Kumbh Mela . Take a holy dip at Har ki Pauri and you do not want to miss the Ganga Aarti .

HEMKUND SAHIB

Hemkund Sahib is popular not only for its stunning landscape but it is said that Guru Gobind Singh meditated here for years before leaving for the heavenly abode. This place is of great significance for the Sikhs and is thus an important Sikh Yatra center. 

Staying true to its name, Auli or ‘meadow’ is an offbeat but popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Why head to Switzerland if you can go to Auli! The meadows are a beautiful green in summers and covered with snow in winters. Auli is a favorite destination for skiing.

Known as the Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh is home to both spiritual as well as adventure tourism. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy a quiet introspection of life in this place. Go on solitary walks along the banks of the Ganges, walk across the Lakshman Jhula or go kayaking, bungee jumping or river-rafting. Chat with travelers from around the world, sip a cup of ginger tea at cafes overlooking the brilliant landscape. Ah, there is so much to do in Rishikesh.

The International Yoga Week from 2nd to 7th Feb is held here on the banks of Ganga and attracts participants from all over the world. The Rishikesh International Film Festival is another event to look forward to every year. Like Rishikesh, Uttarkashi is famous for both its pilgrimage importance as well as adventure sports. It is said that at one point, there were over 365 temples here. Home to ashrams, it is also a trekker’s paradise.

One of the popular hill stations of the country, Dehradun is also home to some of the finest education centers in India including the Indian Military Academy, Doon School, and Forest Research Institute. It also houses some busy shopping streets like Paltan Bazaar, Tibetan Monasteries, and nature’s hideout at Lal Tibba and Robber’s Cave.

This quiet hill station is a biker’s paradise. Surrounded by pine and oak forests and hills, Lansdowne is loved by nature lovers. The picturesque town is also easily accessible by road. There are many beautiful churches, lakes, and museums. The Garhwal Rifles Regiment is situated in this town and the Regimental War Memorial is a must-visit. 

Dhanaulti is around 24km from Mussourie and is another sought-after hill station. It is one of the best places in Uttarakhand to watch snowfalls. 

Known as the ‘Queen of Hills’, Mussoorie is one of the favorite honeymoon destinations of India. When in this hill station, don’t forget to take a walk down the Mall Road , take a ride on a cable car to GunHill , take in the remarkable view of the Doon valley, take bath in the stunning Kempty Falls , relish momos and treat your palate at various quirky restaurants and of course, meet Ruskin Bond if on a Saturday.

Being close to Delhi, Mussourie is a favorite place to celebrate New Years. However, since thousands flock to this hill state at this time of the year which forces the authorities to close down the place due to massive jams and bumper-to-bumper traffic. Trust me, it isn’t a pleasant scenario. We were fortunate to visit the place and get back on time than getting stuck in this chock-a-block traffic which may last for a day until revelers are cleared and asked to return mid-way. 

Another wonderful destination known for its picturesque picnic spots, Chakrata is home to some fun and adventure activities. One can trek your way to Tiger Falls or go camping in this quaint hill station. Waterfall rappelling, river crossing,  and mountain climbing are some of the popular activities one can undertake here. 

The Department of Uttarakhand Tourism has taken special measures to develop New Tehri which engulfs some popular tourist attractions. This includes the spiritual tour of many revered temples and also watersports including jet skiing. The Tehri lake Festival boasts of Asia’s biggest lake festival and includes a plethora of fun and frolic events. The 3-day Tehri Lake Festival of 2018 included activities such as Light and Sound show, Yoga and Meditation, Stargazing, Paragliding, and Water Zorbing among many others. The region also houses one of the highest dam projects called the Tehri Dam.

VALLEY OF FLOWERS

Situated in the Chamoli district near Badrinath, Valley of Flowers is a stunning national park with beautiful meadows of alpine flowers. The Valley of Flowers is open only from the month of June till October as it is covered with snow the rest of the year. That said, the best time to visit is in the months of July and August when the flowers are in full bloom. To reach the Valley of Flowers, one should go on a 13-hour trek from Govind Ghat which is the nearest you can get to by road. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a true paradise on earth with the view of melting glaciers, snowclad mountains, and rich flora. 

Mythological legends say Lord Hanuman visited this valley to collect the ‘Sanjeevani’ herb to save Lakshman’s life. 

Mana is the last village of India near the Indo-China border. It’s one of the best destinations for bikers and is home to tiny yet quaint houses. 

TREKKER’S PARADISE

The Garhwal region is dotted with many treks routes which you can go on including Har ki Dun Valley Trek, Nanda Devi, Nachiketa Tal, Dodi Tal, Sat Tal, Kedar Tal, Gangotri, Gaumukh, Nandanvan Tapovan and to Yamunotri in Garhwal.

Very informative and detailed post, Shalini. We had been to Binsar in 2010 for a family trip with a 5-year-old in tow, who fell so sick that we had to cut short our 10-day trip and return to Bangalore the very next day. This post is like a digest on the state. Loved the information, description and pictures. I have been to Rishikesh , Dehradune and Mussorie but I was a little girl back then. I want to go once again and see Uttarakhand. I remember the times, UP got split. I wanted to study in Pantnagar but then one day – I became a resident of UP and had lesser chances of getting admission in another state. Old times. Places to Visit in Garhwal

The state of Uttaranchal is primarily divided into 2 regions namely the Kumaon and Garhwal. The Garhwal region consists of 7 districts namely chamoli, uttarkashi, pauri, dehradun, rudraprayag, haridwar and tehri garhwal.

The Garhwal region is a treasure trove for nature and art lovers. The lush green landscape surrounded by picturesque mountains is a treat to the eyes and this makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The people of Garhwal are called Garhwalis and they are renowned for their traditional songs and dances which are mostly dedicated to Gods.

The present community is a mixture of indigenous settlers and immigrants from different parts of the country. They speak the Garhwali language which owes its origin to the Indo Aryan language. The language uses the Devanagari script and has several dialects spoken by people in different parts of Uttarakhand. Very often the people of Garhwal are called Paharis. They consist of Rajputs, Brahmins and Tribals.

The tribals of Garhwal are settled in the upper regions of the Garhwal district and are of Mongoloid origin. These people live a nomadic or semi-nomadic life and rely on animal husbandry or small time business for their livelihoods. One such tribe of Garhwal is the Jaunsari tribe of the Jaunsar Bawar.

The Rajputs of the Garhwal region are believed to be of Aryan origin. These people went on to settle in the mountainous region of Garhwal during the Mughal invasion. They practised agriculture for a long time but are now engaged in all kinds of professions.

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun, which is about 155 km from Pauri Garhwal. The only railway station in the district is the Kotdwara.

One of the most well-known treks near Delhi, the Nag Tibba peak stands in the Tehri Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. This trek over the weekend is witnessing growing footfalls, and offers splendid views of the Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Gangotri and Kedarnath mountain peaks en route. What makes this an ideal first trek are the relatively easy routes etched along the mountain. Thick Deodar forests blanket the hill, and the best seasons to visit are between February and June, and September to December. The Nag Tibba trek route is circular in nature, and the differing starting and ending points ensure that there is no overlap at any point. The lush meadows hide patches behind them that act as serene camping sites.

Har Ki Doon

A pristine hanging valley in the Garhwal range, Har Ki Doon is one of the simplest trekking places near Delhi—making it an ideal foray into Himalayan trekking for amateurs. Fulfilling scenes of nature’s majesty carry you through rampant alpine vegetation, glaciers and breath-taking views. For the hill folk, time has remained elusive and one gets to notice their lives from close quarters. The best season to visit is during the months from April to November, and is one of the closest places for trekking in Delhi.

Kedarkantha Trek

Close to another marvel of nature, Har Ki Doon, lies the Kedarkantha trek passing through windy trails of the Garhwal Himalayas. A classic winter trek unravelling untouched mountain-villages on its path, it’s the perfect trek to prepare for the other more arduous Himalayan treks. 

Abound with flora and fauna, the Kedarkantha treks passes around the rim of Govind National Park and is open throughout the year. This place for trekking near Delhi is flanked by the Swargarohini peak and a hanging valley, complete with views that’ll blow your mind away.

Chandrashila Trek

With gradients suiting beginners, Chandrashila trek allows eyeful glimpses of Garhwal Himalayas and the trek passes through an ancient Shiva temple atop Tungnath.

The name Garhwal has an unknown origin, but some believe that it's derived from 'Garhwala' (literally 'owner of forts'), possibly a reference to the first ruler of the Garhwal Kingdom, Ajay Pal.

Though the people living in cities and towns usually speak Hindi, outside of it Garhwal (a local dialect of Hindi ) is much more common.

To get to Garhwal, one can easily get a bus from I.S.B.T Kashmiri Gate (Metro Station) in New Delhi to Kotdwar and Rishikesh.

• Rishikesh is around 280 km from Delhi
• Kotdwar is around 215 km from Delhi.

Dehradun is another useful entry point, with regular trains from New Delhi and shared taxis and buses available to several destinations within Garhwal.

Terrain vehicle and taxis are the best modes of transport in Garhwal. Shared terrain vehicles and buses ply the major north-south routes during the day, connecting Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar with most of the towns listed above. For towns that are not on the major north-south pilgrimage routes you may have to change vehicles multiple times - most drivers will be able to drop you at the right intersection and point you in the right direction to get where you need to go.

Garhwal has a good bus network for all of its important cities. There are 24-hour regular bus services for Dehradun, Roorkee, Rishikesh and Kotdwar.

• Dodital Lake , Dodital – 5- to 7-day high altitude trek. Day 1. Arrival and Overnight at Kuflon Camping site in Assi Ganga Valley. Day 2. Drive 3 km to Sangamchatti and trek 8 km to Bebra Campsite. Day 3. Trek 14 km to Dodital (3024 meters). Day 4. Trek 6 km (one way) to Darwa Top (4200 meters) and return to Dodital. Day 5. Return trek of 14 km to Bebra. Day 6. Trek 8 km to Sangamchatti and return drive to Dehradun/Haridwar. Note: One can crossover to Hanumanchatti side on day 4 to camp at lower Seema. Next day, 6 km downward hike to Hanumanchatti road head in Yamnotri valley. For kids and senior citizens there is an option to camp midway at Manjhi between Bebra and Dodital.
• Panch Kedar ( पंचकेदार ). This refers to five Hindu temples or holy places of the Shaivite sect dedicated to Shiva . The five temples are to be visited in strict order during a pilgrimage.  
• Roopkund – Six days Trek. Day 1. Arrival at Loharjung campsite. Day 2. Drive 8 km to Kooling and trek 4 km to village Dhidna. Homestay in Dhidna. Day 2. Trek to Bedni Bugyal via Tolpani and Aali Bugyal. Day 3. Trek to Baguabasa. Day 4. Attempt Roopkund and return to Pattar Nachouniya. Day 5 Trek to Village Wan via Bedni Bugyal and Gairoli Patal. If on time drive back to Loharjung or camp above village Wan. Day 6. Return drive.

There are numerous traditional dhabas available in Delhi-Rishikesh and Delhi-Kotdwar-Pauri route.

Though popular cold drinks are available in every nook and corner, one should search for traditional and tasty burans juice which is made up of burans, an indigenous plant known as the rhododendron in English.

G.M.V.N guest houses are in nearly every town of the region and often provide cheap dorms. Most towns along the main pilgrimage contain at least a few hotels.

One can get out from Kotdwar direct to Delhi following N.H 119 and from Rishikesh through Haridwar-Delhi highway. Trains run every day from Kotdwar and Rishikesh to Delhi.

Why Visit Chamoli?

Although every place in Uttarakhand is scenic, Chamoli is one such place where you can find eye captivating natural beauty, along with spirituality and peace. Nature Walks:  The natural beauty that envelops the vicinity of Chamoli is quite mesmerizing. The namesake district is one of the most gorgeous regions of Uttarakhand. Shopping :  Being a commercial town, Chamoli does have lot of shops and stores where one can purchase handlooms, artifacts, indigenous household items, pickles, jams etc. Apparels made from Angora wool can also be purchased at Chamoli. 

Staying in Chamoli

Chamoli is a small township in the Garhwal hills and is situated en-route to Joshimath-Badrinath Highway. There are quite a few budget accommodations available at Chamoli where tourists can stay. During the Char Dham Yatra peak season, when finding accommodation is quite difficult in Badrinath and Joshimath , pilgrims tend to stay at Chamoli and make a day a trip to Badrinath.

Chamoli Food Guide

Chamoli may not offer variety of cuisines as chances of finding a decent restaurant that serves different platters is slim. Local food joints and roadside eateries specialize in popular North Indian and Chinese dishes. Local cuisine is worth giving a try one can taste all sorts of Pahadi dishes like Chainsoo, Gahat Dal, Sisunak Saag, Kappa to name a few. However, In-house restaurants of the expensive hotels serve all types of cuisine.

History of Chamoli

The history of Chamoli dates back to the 6th century A.D. Initially, it was under the rule of King Bhanu Pratap of Panwar dynasty of Garhwal, who founded Chandpur-Garhi as the capital. Later in September 1803, an earthquake hit the region and weakened the economic as well as administrative set up of the Garhwal dynasty. 

The Gorkhas took advantage of the situation and attacked the kingdom, taking control over half of the Garhwal kingdom, till 1804. The region remained under the rule of the Gorkhas until 1815 when the British Government came and took it under its rule. In 1997 Chamoli city became a part of a separate, Chamoli district carved out of Pauri Garhwal.

Chamoli experiences salubrious weather throughout the year, therefore it is an ideal place for the travelers to chill, relax and enrapture in adventure activities. One can visit here anytime but if you are looking for some refreshing natural views to replenish your soul then, it is advised to plan a trip between June to September as nature is in full bloom. 

Chamoli is only 2-3 hours drive away and features some of the best excursion places of Uttarakhand like the sacred Badrinath , the pious Hemkund Sahib , the blossoming Valley of Flowers , Auli known as the ‘ Switzerland of India ’, Gopeshwar , Chopta , Tungnath and many more. So if you are a wanderer then Chamoli is the place for you.

It is noted for its several shrines and temples and is the birthplace of the renowned Chipko movement which led the focus of the whole world towards our nature and the atrocities done to it by us. Chamoli is known for its villages and the rich culture of the Garhwal region.

Uttarakhand or Uttaranchal was carved out of 13 districts of Uttar Pardesh in 9th of Nov2000. It became the 27th state of the Indian Union and Dehradun was made the state capital. The initial name Uttarakhand was renamed to Uttaranchal and finally again changed to Uttarakhand in 2006.

Uttarakhand is home to the holiest rivers the Ganga and Yamuna and the mightiest of the mountains the Himalayas. Geography and People

Uttarakhand is divided into 2 regions the Garhwal and the Kumaon. Both the regions are equally beautiful and have a surrounded by the majestic mountain peaks of Bhagirathi, Chowkhamba, Pindari, Sahastrataal, Milam, Nanda Devi, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Jogin Group and many more.

The Garhwal region has around 7 districts while the kumaon region is made up of 6 districts. The Nanda devi mountain is the natural divide among the two regions. The districts in the Garhwal region are Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri Garhwal,Pauri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag while the Kumaon region consists of Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat, Nainital,Pithoragarh and UdhamsinghNagar. It is further divided into 49 sub-divisions and 95 development blocks, 15,638 inhabited villages and 86 urban settlements in the state

Uttarakhand with a total area of around 53,483 sqkms has a total forest area of around 35,651 sqkms with majority of them are Oak and Pine forests.

The Yamuna and the Ganges are the two biggest rivers of Uttarakhand and also the most important. They are also one of the biggest rivers in India. The other important rivers passing through the state are the Sarayu, Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, Dhauliganga, Ramganga, Tons and Saraswati. These holy rivers give form to most of the important holy places such as the prayas, Haridwar and Rishikesh and provide a lifeline for almost a 5 million of people across 5 states in India.

Garhwali and Kumaoni are the two main regional languages, whereas Hindi is the most widely spoken language.

According to the latest census the state has a population of 10,086,292, making it the 19th most populous state in India. The men are around 51,54 178 while the women are 49,62,574 of the state population. A large portion of the population consists of Rajputs and Brahmins. More than 88% of the population follow Hinduism. Muslims are the largest minority in the state with Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, and Jains being the other major religions. Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are the most populous districts of Uttarakhand.

Uttara means North and Khand means Land – Uttarakhand and the majority of the population still live in rural villages, an approximately 70 percent of population residing in villages and rural hills in about 16,763 villages. The state has come a long way in terms of growth and development with the strong will of the people.

Festival Culture and Cuisines

The people here celebrate all major festivals such as Holi, Diwali, Navratri. Some of the festivals related to Uttarakhand are Ghee Sankrant, Harela and Bhitauli. The people enjoy enacting the great hindu epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana during the diwali festivals. The Pandav Nitya and the Jagars are one of the highlights of the festivals.

The Uttarakhandi are god fearing people. They have their share of beliefs in sprites ( ghosts ) and gods alike. Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga is worshipped here during all festivals. Many of the people have witnessed the power of the gods during the Doli ceremony. Sometimes god is invoked in a human being in order to search for an answer for a particular problem. Animals such as Goats and sheep were also sacrificed in order to please the Gods.

Uttarakhand is a poor state with agriculture as the primary occupation. The food also is very simple in the hills but as the people say that the water here is magical which increase the taste of any food tenfold. Here the use of spices and tomatoes is very minimal. Madua ( Buck wheat ) - Koda , Rajma, locally grown green vegetables, fish form their staple diet. Some of the famous cuisines of Uttarakhand are Tuasu, Kaplu, Jholi, Phaanu, Thechwani, Swala, Jhangora and Desserts are Arsa ,Methubhat, Gulgula, Jhangora ki kheer and Prasad ( mix of wheat flour and ghee ) . It is believed that a stay of 6months in garhwal can cure a man of obesity.

Music and dance form a essential part of festivals of the people of Uttarakhand. Some of the most common folk songs are Chhopati, Chounphula, Jhumeila and Basanti. Mangal is another popular folk song which is sung during the marriage ceremony by girls to tease the bridegroom and his friends. Langvir Nritya, Barada Nati and Pandav Nritya are some of the traditional folk dances of Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand has a rich history from the stone age to the modern age. The state is also mentioned in almost all the great vedas and purans and related with the great legendary epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Evidence has also been found of human habitation around the stone age in the Almora and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand has also witnessed the wide spread pain and agony during the Gurkha rule and also has played his part in the struggle for freedom against the Britishers.

The people of the state also agitated against the UP Govt. for a separate state.

Chipko Movement of Uttarakhand

Chipko Movement was a daring act of non - violence carried out by the people of Uttarakhand in order to save the trees of the forest from being felled down due to the then government allocated tenders and policies.

The women of Uttarakhand also played a very active role in this movement.

ChandiPrasad Bhatt, Gaura Devi and all the people who took an active part in the movement were real heroes who faced the then mighty government with great courage and a firm determination.

The Chipko movement has also been carried out successfully all over the country in various other states.

Uttarakhand is very well known for education. Mussoorie, Dehradun and Nainital is home to some of India's best boarding schools. There are around approx 15,500 big and small primary schools in India.

Economy Issues Faced

Uttarakhand being a hilly region the changes of optimal use of land for economic development is rather minimal. Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and some parts of Dehradun and Nainital districts are in the plains and contribute to almost 80% of the the state economy. Most of the hilly areas are dependent on agriculture for livelihood whereas the scope of agriculture in the hilly regions are highly constrained due to various physical, geographical and environmental problems.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha general elections, Tirath Singh Rawat of BJP won in this seat defeating Manish Khanduri of INC by a margin of 3,02,669 votes which was 40.75% of the total votes cast for the seat. BJP had a vote share of 67.78% in 2019 in this seat.

In 2014, Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri of BJP emerged victorious in this seat beating (Dr) Harak Singh Rawat of INC by a margin of 1,84,526 votes which was 27.06% of the total votes polled in the constituency. BJP secured a vote share of 59.48% in the seat.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Satpal Maharaj of INC won this seat beating Lt Gen(Retd) Tejpal Singh Rawat of BJP by a margin of 17,397 votes which was 3.24% of the total votes polled in the constituency. INC had a vote share of 44.12% in the seat.
