How to Explore Manipur in 4 Days: An Ideal Itinerary

Manipur is the “Jewel of India”, and rightly so. Located in the northeast, the three states of Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram encircle it on three sides. Nature has endowed Manipur with marvels like Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao National Park, and Shirui Lily. Manipur is also a visual treat owing to her lush paddy fields, rolling hills, and picturesque valleys. Additionally, Manipur has a rich cultural heritage, thanks to a sundry of traditions existing among her 32 tribes. Manipur’s cultural affluence is also evident from the existence of various dance forms, such as “Ras Leela” (one of the classical dance forms of India) and “Khamba Thoibi”. Hence, Manipur offers some interesting experiences for any wandering soul.

Loktak lake Manipur

It has been our dream to explore every “Seven Sisters” state of northeastern India. As such, we were lucky to start our tryst with Manipur. We spent 4 days in Manipur. To sum up, each day brought new experiences and taught us new tidbits about Manipur.

So, here we have discussed a 4-day itinerary for Manipur and a host of other important things.

How to reach Manipur:

  • By air: Manipur’s sole airport, Bir Tikendrajit International Airport is located in Imphal. The most convenient way of reaching Imphal undoubtedly is by air. Daily multiple flights ply to Imphal from Kolkata and Guwahati, both of which are well – connected with rest of India.
  • By train: As of now, Manipur has no rail connectivity. The nearest rail station is at Dimapur in Nagaland.

How to travel within Manipur:

The bus service in Manipur is not very reliable. We noticed locals rely upon only tempo services for transportation. Hence, it’s better to book a cab beforehand for traveling throughout Manipur.

Sadu Chiru Manipur

Our trip was managed by Mr. Ashok Sapamcha of Sangai Moonlight Camping. Not only did he take care of every aspect of the trip, he also provided his valuable inputs and helped us in planning our itinerary.

What is the best time to visit Manipur:

The months from October to April are perfect for visiting Manipur since the weather remains pleasant for exploring the state. Avoid the monsoon months altogether, as the monsoon in the northeast is unrelenting.

Why you need to visit Manipur:

Manipur is a fascinating place, waiting to be explored.

  • There is the Loktak Lake , the largest freshwater lake of northeastern India. Loktak is renowned primarily for its ‘Phumdi’ or floating islands. These floating mass of vegetation indeed bequeath a unique attribute to Loktak.
  • Manipur has world’s only floating national park, Keibul Lamjao .
  • The gravely endangered, Sangai or Eld’s Deer , is also found only in this state.
  • Shirui Lily , a rare type of Lily, blooms once every year, solely at Ukhrul of Manipur.
  • Manipur is one of the few Indian states where cherry blossom blooms every year. Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated every year in November at Ukhrul.
  • Part of Manipur’s appeal lies in its diverse tribal cultures. There are around 32 tribes here, each having their own custom and culture.
  • Manipur’s history is also rather appealing. From the ancient Meitei rulers to the Battle of Imphal during the Second World War, you can find interesting remains here.

Loktak Lake scene

So, here’s the 4-day itinerary we followed in Manipur.

A rain-soaked morning welcomed us when we arrived at Imphal’s airport. Our destination was Moirang. However, we had planned to explore the following places on the way.

Peace Museum Manipur

  • Red Hill: This is worth visiting for the Second World War memorials. During the War, Manipur had turned out into a hotbed of fierce battles fought between the Allied powers (British-Indian forces) and Axis powers (Japan along with Indian National Army under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose). The encounters took place from July, 1943 to May, 1944. These battles occured at Red Hill or Maibam Lokpa Ching.
  • Indian Peace Memorial : It was built by the Government of Japan in 1994 for commemorating 50 th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal. Revered as a symbol of peace, it has been consecrated in memory of those who lost their lives in the War.
  • Imphal Peace Museum : The museum has remarkably preserved artifacts dating back to the War. You can find written first – hand experiences of the War, remains of soldiers’ uniform, shells, mortars etc. It is amazing how this museum honor memories of both the victor and the vanquished.
  • Sadu Chiru waterfall . The road took us through little villages until we reached our destination. The waterfall, also called Leimaram, lies at the end of a short hike through a forest. The waterfall is not much worthy and it is more like a local picnic spot. However, we did like the quaint ambiance.
  • Bisnhu Temple of Bishnupur . Built by King Khyamba, it is believed to be the oldest Bishnu temple of Manipur. The temple is certainly unique.

Bishnu Temple Manipur

It was afternoon when we reached Moirang. Jiteswar took us to a shanty hotel for dinner, which apparently serves the best Manipuri food in the town. A few moments of apprehension later, we did enjoy the simple lunch here.

Food in Manipur

After lunch, we proceeded to our next and final location. A right turn and there it was – the Loktak Lake. Two conjoined boats waited for us for taking us to the homestay. The boats navigated through phumdis and clusters of vibrant lotus. We also spotted many egrets and storks on our way.

The sun had already begun to set when we reached homestay. We watched a beautiful sunset while sipping tea and munching on colorful fryums. We chatted and did stargazing for the rest of the evening with a backdrop of crickets chirping and frogs croaking.

Sunset at Loktak Manipur

Where to stay in Loktak Lake:

We stayed at Loktak Aquamarine Floating Homestay. The homestay literally floats as it has been built on phumdis. For details on this unique homestay, check our blog here.

Cottages of Loktak Aquamarine Floating Homestay

The second day started with an early morning boat ride on Loktak Lake. This gives a brilliant scope to enjoy the serenity of the lake as also the daily activities of fishermen. You can watch scores of fishermen busy with their nets and traps for collecting the catch of the day. Many others gather edible weeds from the lake. We further spotted some women collecting lotus flowers, which are essential in Meitei religious rituals. For learning more on Loktak Lake, read our blog here .

Fishing at Loktak Lake

After having breakfast, we went out to explore the town of Moirang. We visited the following places:

  • Sendra view point: It provides a beautiful view of the Loktak Lake.
  • Chauba Ching view point: Previously, it formed a part of the now deserted Assam Rifles Camp. The watchtower now provides perfect view of the Loktak Lake and its phumdis.
  • INA Museum: Formerly headquarter of Indian National Army or Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji, it now houses priceless documents, letters, photographs etc. of Netaji.
  • Ibodhou Thanjing Temple: Thanjing is one of the principal deities of Meitei community. This temple is dedicated to him. Moreover, Manipur’s famous “Lai Haraoba” festival is celebrated here.
  • Ima Keithel: Like Imphal, Moirang has an Ima Keithel or women’s market. Though it is smaller than the one found in Imphal, the spirit is same nonetheless.

Moirang Ima Market Loktak Lake

During sunset, we went out for another round of boating around Loktak.

Sunset at Loktak Lake

The next day, we went to the Keibul Lamjao National Park as early as possible. As mentioned earlier, it is the only floating national park in the world. It is a part of the expansive Loktak Lake and plays a significant role in the preservation of Loktak’s ecology. Moreover, Keibul Lamjao is the home of the vulnerable Sangai deer.

Keibul Lamjao Manipur

The Sangai deer are primarily visible in the early morning. They come in herds for grazing during this time. We were lucky enough to spot a few, including a stag and a fawn. Learn more about Keibul Lamjao in our blog here.

We bade Moirang adieu and moved on to Imphal. The day was reserved for exploring the beautiful capital city of Manipur.

A visit to Imphal remains incomplete without visiting the following places:

Kangla Fort Manipur

  • Kangla Fort: Regarded as the prime attraction of Imphal, it served as the seat of power of the Meitei rulers right from the ancient period up to the conquest of Manipur by the British in 1891 AD.
  • Ima Keithel: It is the famous women’s market of Manipur. Accordingly, it is believed to be the largest market of its kind in the world.
  • Shree Shree Govindajee Temple: It is the largest Vaishnavite temple of Manipur.
  • Imphal War Cemetery: Here lies the graves of those valiant soldiers who fought for the Allied side and lost their lives in the War.
  • Nupi Lan Memorial Complex: Its purpose lies in preserving the memories of the brave-heart Manipuri women martyrs who fought against the British on 13 th December, 1939.
  • Manipur State Museum: It displays different tribal attire, royal costumes, weaponry, valuable historical documents and scores of other priceless artifacts.
  • Manipur Zoological Garden: Along with Sangai, there are Hoolock gibbon (India’s only ape), Slow Loris, Himalayan Sloth Bear and others. In case if you missed Sangai at Keibul Lamjao, you can see a few here.

Ima Market Manipur

Where to stay in Imphal:

We stayed at Yum & Hills Cottage. It is a pretty homestay, located on the outskirts of Imphal. The cottages resemble traditional Manipuri houses and are spread across a nice garden. Also, the owners are warm and helpful.

For our last day, we visited the Andro village . Located near Imphal, the first settlers of Manipur lived here initially. Andro is popular for four reasons:

Andro Manipur

  • Its traditional method of pottery called “Charai Taba” or coil pottery, practiced only by married women of the village.
  • Its indigenous alcoholic brew called “Sekmai” and “Andro”.
  • The ancient temple of Mei Mutaba dedicated to Panam Ningthou, the village deity.
  • The cultural complex cum museum which showcases the culture and conventions of northeast India’s diverse tribes.

Potter at Andro

From Andro, we travelled to Sanamahi Kiyong temple, perched atop the Nongmaijing Hills. Lord Pakhangba, the ancient Meitei God, is worshipped here. Regarded as the main center of Sanamahism, it attracts pilgrims not only from Manipur but also neighbouring states of Assam and Tripura. The temple in its brilliant colors stands out amidst the greenery of the hills.

Sanamahi Temple Manipur

Our last destination was Langei Model Village. We wanted to watch weavers weaving their magic on textiles. However, owing to the pandemic situation, weavers have gradually stopped coming to the center and prefer weaving at home. There was only one woman, working with her tools and weaving a ceremonial ‘Phanek’.

Things to remember:

  • Like other northeastern states of India, Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for entering Manipur. You can get it beforehand from the online portal of Manipur Government . Or you can make one at the airport on arrival.
  • Carry your Covid – 19 vaccination certificate if you have both the doses. In case you are yet to get your vaccine, carry a negative RT-PCR test result done 72 hours prior of travelling.
  • Gone are the days when Manipur was volatile. At present, it is absolutely safe for traveling.
  • The ecology of Loktak is vulnerable. Therefore, while visiting Loktak Lake, refrain from littering and using plastic.
  • Same goes for Keibul Lamjao National Park. Its absolutely important to travel responsibly here as the ecosystem is at risk owing to unchecked human interference.
  • Respect the customs and culture of the locals.

Manipur ( Manipuri : ꯀꯪꯂꯩꯄꯥꯛ, Kangleipak) is a North-Eastern Indian state, rich in history, culture and natural beauty.  Ancient Manipur  was one of Asia's oldest human civilisations. It was known for the arts, language, philosophy, politics and sports. Besides its cultural heritage, the blue mountains and the bowl like central plain draw many tourists from far away. Loktak lake , home to the world's only floating national park, is known as the "Mirror of Manipur".

Manipur is also known as "Switzerland of the East", "Jewel of India" and "Maid of the Mountains". Besides these, it is also called "Gateway to South East Asia" for its strategic location in India connecting with the South East Asian countries. Other than Manipur, there is no well developed land route in India to connect with the ASEAN nations.

Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years, connecting the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia to Southeast Asia, East Asia, Siberia, regions in the Arctic, Micronesia and Polynesia. This strategic geographical location enables the migration of people, cultures and religions, to and from all sides.

Manipur has mountainous and plain regions with countless islands spread over the Loktak lake in the middle of the central bowl like plain.

Map

Manipur is broadly divided into plain districts (Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Jiribam, Kakching, Thoubal) and hill districts (Chandel, Churachandpur, Kamjong, Sadar Hills/Kangpokpi, Noney, Pherzawl, Senapati, Tamenglong, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul).

Major cities include:

  • 24.8167 93.95 1 Imphal (ꯏꯝꯐꯥꯜ) — the metropolis and the largest city of Manipur state, most of the archaeological and historical sites are concentrated here
  • 24.63036 93.75983 2 Bishnupur (ꯕꯤꯁ꯭ꯅꯨꯄꯨꯔ) — housing the first Hindu temple built in Manipur - Bishnu Temple (Vishnu Temple)

Manipur is bordered by Assam in the west, Nagaland in the north, Myanmar (Burma) in the east, and Mizoram in the south.

The state is a melting pot of different cultures and languages. In Manipur, people are legally classified as non-tribal groups and tribal groups. All the non-Meiteis are considered tribals, giving governmental privileges in every sectors. The Meitei people (popularly called Manipuri speaking people) comprise the vast majority of the population, although there is a sizeable population of the Nagas (the largest minority group) and other various tribal groups. Tribesmen communities are native to the hill districts while the Meiteis are mainly predominant in the central plain and other valleys, including Jiribam and Moreh . Hinduism and Christianity are the dominant religions in the state. Sanamahism is the only ancient religion indigenous to Manipur. After a long suppression of three consecutive centuries, it is reviving and is the fastest growing religion in Manipur.

Manipur has long connected the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia , enabling the migration of various cultures and languages to and from the two regions, and the state is credited for introducing the sport of polo to Europeans.

As with several states in North-Eastern India , Manipur has faced a violent, often brutal, insurgency. The parallel rise of the Naga insurgency in the hill districts and the fact that there are elements of ethnic and tribal nationalism in the insurgent movement have made the situation very complex.

Although the worst of the violence may have come to an end with many rebel groups having since surrendered peacefully to the Indian government, some issues caused by the insurgency still persist.

Meitei (popularly called Manipuri ) is the official state language and is the native language of the vast majority of the population, although an English speaking visitor will not encounter significant language problems. English is the second most widely studied and understood language next to Meitei, followed by the local tribal languages. At least some basic knowledge of English can be expected from almost most of the population in the tourism industry and public transport services. However, learning a few Meitei terms, like "hello", "how are you" and "thank you" will be warmly welcomed.

Some people in Manipur can communicate in Hindi similar to its neighbouring states, but nearly everyone in Manipur is better in communicating in English over Hindi and locals too prefer communicating in English over Hindi.

If you are an Indian citizen but don't reside in Manipur, you need to apply for an "inner line permit" (ILP) upon arrival in Manipur. Foreign travellers also need to register with the police when they enter, but do not officially require any kind of permit. If entering by land along the main road from Nagaland, there's an obvious ILP counter next to the border gate at Mao. The place for foreigners to register is also well-marked, but is located just a bit farther down the road at the big police station in Mao village.

Imphal Airport ( IMF  IATA ) is the largest in Manipur, second largest and the third busiest in North East India. Several airlines transport passengers from Manipur and other places. AirAsia India serves transportation from Delhi , Guwahati and Kolkata . Air India has flights to Aizawl , Delhi, Dimapur , Guwahati and Kolkata. Alliance Air serves transportation from Dimapur and Guwahati. IndiGo serves transportation from Agartala , Ahmedabad , Bangalore , Delhi, Dibrugarh , Guwahati, Hyderabad , Mumbai , Kolkata and Shillong .

Manipur can be entered by roadways from any of its land neighbours. From Myanmar, Assam and Nagaland, there are international highways, national highways and inter-state highways to Manipur. From Myanmar , Manipur can be entered through Moreh , the Indo-Myanmar border commercial hub. From the eastern side (Myanmar), the most popular route to Manipur is the Indo-Myanmar Highways (Imphal-Moreh Highway). From the western side via Assam, the most popular route to Manipur is the Imphal-Jiribam Highway. From the northern side via Nagaland, the most popular route to Manipur is the Imphal-Dimapur highway, which crosses the state border at a place called Mao Gate.

There are daily bus departures from Kohima to Imphal, leaving only at 7:30AM. The bus sometimes fills up, and no advance bookings are accepted, so you should arrive half and hour to an hour early to get your ticket.

Another way to get from Kohima to Imphal is to take a sumo from P.R. Hill neighborhood in Kohima to Khuzama village, near the Manipur border, then another sumo from Khuzama taxi stand to Mao Gate at the border, then another from the taxi stand inside Mao village (just past the police station, left at the fork in the road). This, of course, is both slower and more expensive than taking a bus, but is a workable backup plan if you aren't able to get the bus.

Indian Railways connect Manipur with the rest of country's regions through Jiribam . As of 2022, the world's tallest railway bridge is under construction in Noney district of Manipur.

Inter district buses and inter city buses are good options for domestic travel across Manipur, both plain and hill districts. The Inter State Bus Terminus in Imphal is the meeting point of every bus services in Manipur.

Exploring Manipur by car can be an awesome experience, allowing you to explore the incredibly scenic and varied terrains of the Manipur's central plain, surrounding hills and mountains, river valleys and lake islands, at your satisfaction. Most roads are well-marked and well-maintained due to the rapid expansion and the improvement of the international highways, national highways, inter-state highways and intra-state highways in Manipur. Road signs in Meitei ( Manipuri ) are usually repeated with the respective English language translations or Latin-Roman script transliterations.

Getting around the islands (human inhabited as well as non-human inhabited) of the Loktak Lake in the central bowl like plain of Manipur, is usually done with boat rides. Boats of various types are available. Motor boats, canoes, fishing boats, kayaks, house boats, rowboats, sailing boats are some of the common types of boats travellers usually choose.

One of the most popular boatyards is in the shoreline foothills of the Sendra hillock in Thanga (outside the Thanga main island but under its geopolitical jurisdiction). Others are almost all the shoreline peripheral regions of the Loktak Lake, especially [hanga and Moirang .

Hundreds of buoyant restaurants and hotels are floating around the Loktak Lake, giving services to the travellers. Staying one or two nights at these floating lodges is a unique experience for people who are fleeing from noisy city life.

Few Asian provinces can pride themselves on a heritage as important to oriental civilization as Manipur. A range of the classical historic landmarks remind one of the days when the great Meitei rulers and authors made their mark on the development of culture, literature and sports.

Manipuri cuisine is a blend of indigenous traditions and outside influences. Mainland India have left significant impacts on modern Manipuri cuisine. The traditional Meitei diet is very oriental, espousing fish, grains, herbs and vegetables native to the Asian biome. Rice is a staple food. Being highly dependent on the Loktak Lake , the Meiteis incorporate plenty of aquatic food into their diet, especially fish. Manipur is also a remarkable producer and consumer of fish, pork and chicken. Wines are legally allowed for tribes but not for the Meiteis (excluding Chakpa castes) since they are legally not tribes.

  • Umorok – literally ‘tree chilli’ u=tree; morok = chilli. It is garnished with maroi (maroi namakpi, maroi nakuppi, awa phadigom, mayang-ton, toning-khok tilhou, coriander leaves).

Tea and coffee

In Manipur, tea is more popularly consumed as compared to coffee. Tea is readily available in almost all the hotels but you can't expect the same thing for coffee. Both drinks are not native to Manipur. So, there are no Manipuri terms for these drinks. The common Indian term "Chaa" (not "Chai") is used to refer to tea and for coffee, it's the same pronunciation - "Kofee".

Alcoholic beverages

The Manipuri collective term for all liquors like alcohol, beer, wine, etc. is "Yu" ("Yoo"). It's common among the tribal people of the hills of Manipur. Among the majority Meitei tribal, it's not legally allowed. However, the Chakpa caste inside the Meitei ethnicity is an exception. The Chakpa dominated areas like Andro , Kakching , Khurkhul, Sekmai, etc. have some of the most famous breweries in Manipur. In some Chakpa villages, the term "wanglei" (/waang-lei/) is used instead of the general term "Yu" ("Yoo").

Pineapple and orange juices

Manipur is extremely famous for the production of pineapple and orange juices. These fruits are produced in bulk from the hill districts and the hilly areas of the plain districts. Notably, pineapple is the state fruit of Manipur. Pineapple and orange juices manufactured in Manipur are annually exported to foreign nations, including Japan. The Manipuri terms for pineapple and orange are "kihom" (/kee-hom/) and "komla" (/kom-laa/) respectively. Among the fruit festivals organised in Manipur, pineapple festivals and orange festivals are the most popular ones.

tourism map of manipur

Large-scale riots broke out throughout Manipur between the Meitei people and Kuki people in May 2023. The military was authorised to shoot and kill any rioters along with applying regular riot-control weapons. Stay away from protests, monitor local media, and follow instructions from local authorities. Christians and Hindus are also advised to keep a low profile, since rioters may associate those religious identities with their respective enemy groups.

Manipur has distinct valley people (plain people) and hill people (mountain people). The Meitei people ( Manipuri-speaking people) are the predominant as well as the largest ethnicity and live in the central plain of Manipur. The non-Meiteis are regarded as the tribesmen communities (Nagas, Kukis, Zomi/Chin) that live in the surrounding hills. The Zomi/Chin would like to be united in an independent state with their tribespeople in Myanmar. There are multiple competing tribal militias that extort money from their countrymen, block roads, and occasionally erupt into warfare/killing.

The Imphal Valley (also called the Manipur Plain) is generally safe (see the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office website and similar sites), but hilly areas should be visited only on the basis of good local information, and the word 'disturbed' means no-go.

About this Blog: A travel story meeting a photo essay, this blog is about showing you the beauty of the Loktak Lake in Manipur. It is our endeavor through this photo story to show you why you must visit Loktak Lake in Northeast India once in your lifetime. Along with that, we will share important information like how to reach, where to stay, what to do in this special place. There are also the stories of Phumdis, Sangai deer and information about Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park in India.

It was on our flight to Imphal that we saw blue expanses dotted with green ring-like structures. That was our first glimpse of the Loktak Lake in Manipur. But at that time, we were travelling to Myanmar by land crossing the Moreh-Tamu border . We did not have the time to visit the lake and the floating islands. It was much later that we once again got the opportunity to visit Manipur and this time, we included this place in our Manipur itinerary.

Loktak Lake in Manipur, Northeast India is one such place that will leave you speechless, no matter what. Not only the visuals, you will also be awed by the stories and facts about this largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. So read on to know more about Loktak Lake and Keibul Lamjao National Park – the only floating national park in India.

Where is Loktak Lake?

Loktak Lake is located in Moirang district of Manipur in Northeast India. Located about 53 km from Imphal city, the capital of Manipur, Loktak Lake is known for its circular floating swamp known as Phumdis . The lake, with its glassy water and floating phumdis, is a sight to behold. Manipur is known as the “Jewel of India” and Loktak is definitely the most precious one out there. After our amazing experience at Dal Lake , Loktak Lake was definitely another place that we will remember for a long time to come.

Experience at Loktak Lake

It was the end of January when we visited Manipur. After spending two sunny days in Imphal, the weather suddenly decided to be a bit gloomy. It was raining when we started our journey from Imphal. However, by the time we reached Bishnupur town, it was again sunny. We have long accepted the fact that weather in northeast India and mountains are quite unpredictable.

At Bishnupur, we stopped for a few minutes to see the old temples. However, that is for another post.

After a drive for another 40 minutes, we reached Moirang town. We had wanted to visit the INA memorial at Moirang. However, it was closed that day.

At Moirang, we met our homestay owner and he took us to the lake side from where we would take the boat to our homestay on the lake. Yes, it was a floating homestay. Built on the Phumdis, the homestay was simple, yet elegant.

Journey to Loktak Aquamarine Homestay on a small boat

As we were waiting, a narrow boat arrived and we hopped on to the boat with our luggages. The boat maneuvered through swamps and floating biomasses and after a short and sweet trip on the Loktak Lake, we reached our homestay.

Loktak Lake Homestay

Loktak Aquamarine Homestay - Manipur Tourism

The homestay, in one word, was exceptional. Made of bamboo, there are 3 cottages, all located on Phumdis. There was a kitchen area and a dining area as well.

Our host showed us our cottage and like most of the time, we seemed to be the only ones in the homestay. Our host later informed us a couple of other guests are also due to arrive that day. However, we were given the choice to stay at either the ground floor or the first floor of the cottage.

They also cook awesome and tasty food in their kitchen. We were quite delighted to have rice and fish for lunch and even a few local fares for dinner.

Breakfast with a view at our homestay

The homestay was just a piece of heaven, literally cut off from the rest of the world. There was no noise, no stress – a perfect place to relax amidst nature. There was a small sitting area in front of the cottage where you could simply sit and spend time watching the ripples on the lake, the phumdis and the fishermen with their boats.

So, what are Phumdis?

Phumdis at Loktak Lake

Phumdis are essentially the moving biomass that you see floating on the Loktak Lake. They are heterogeneous masses of vegetation, soil and organic matters in various stages of decomposition. The Phumdis actually start growing from the bottom of the lake. They absorb nutrients during the dry season from November to March.

The Phumdis can vary in size from small ones to an area as much as 50 sq km. The Sendra Tourist Lodge stands on one such huge Phumdi.

Sendra Island Manipur

The locals build their houses on these Phumdis or Phums, mostly for the purpose of fishing. These Phums are also affected by the winds. Movement of Phumdis becomes active especially during the autumn season (August to October). These months are locally known as “phum ngaoba matam” , which literally translates into “ season where floating mass goes wild ”.

Phumsangs or the Floating Huts

During this time, the fishermen folk usually look for the best phumdis to construct Phumsangs (floating huts). The Phumdis that are not squelchy are chosen and then the mass is cut as per the required size. It is then bound with strong threads and ropes. Once the Phum is ready, a layer of bamboo is placed on them to form a stable base or platform on which the hut will be constructed.

Phumshangs or floating huts on Loktak Lake

The phumdi is then anchored with the help of heavy stones so that their movement is restricted. This process is known as sangkha-namba. This is a laborious process and often becomes a community affair with the villagers pitching in together. Once the phumdi is properly anchored and tied, then the owner of that specific phumdi can construct his hut on it.

The life span of such a Phumdi is usually two years, also depending on the number of persons staying on it.

Phumdis on Loktak Lake Manipur

A few of the phumsangs also have vegetable gardens on them. Extensive cultivation cannot be done in the phumsangs, but the little that is done, helps the locals for sustenance and reduces their dependency on going to the mainland markets.

The Rings of Loktak

The rings that you see on the Loktak Lake is actually another type of aquaculture practiced by the fishermen. Well, they are not natural, but made by the fishermen by cutting phumdis into smaller sizes. These are then tied and placed in a circular position. These are called athaphums .

Ataphums or rings of Loktak Lake - Manipur

These ataphums are generally placed where the water is deep. A wide net is generally put inside the athaphum to gather fishes and is then left undisturbed for a few days. The fishes inside the ring are given extra feed so that they are larger and heavier than the other fishes in the lake. This method of fishing with the help of athaphums has been used by the fishermen of Loktak Lake from time immemorial.

A fisherman inside an Ataphum

The Loktak lake fishing community is a world of its own revolving around the lake. But while everything looks great from the surface, all is not well at Loktak.

All is not Well at Loktak Lake

Loktak Lake covers an area of 230 sq meters . For all the lakeside residents, fishing is the only livelihood.

The land under the lake was once farmland and grazing land. But with the construction of the Ithai Barrage and hydroelectric dam in 1979, almost 20000 hectares of arable land was submerged under the swelling waters of the lake. Unofficial figures state the area to be almost 80000 hectares. There are also no industries or factories in the vicinity to provide employment to the residents near the lake.

As a result, the farmers became fishermen.

But the problem is that the current state of things is gradually destroying the lake and in turn hurting its residents.

Fishermen of Loktak Lake

With the number of people depending on the Loktak Lake for livelihood, it is putting a huge pressure on the lake. Overfishing is now a concern. And it is messing with the natural ecosystem of the lake. Loktak Lake once used to be a haven for migratory birds from far north. With time, the number of migratory birds coming to the lake has reduced in numbers.

Human activities have also posed other problems in the lake. Loktak Lake was not very deep to start with. The deepest parts of the lake were almost 10 meters (33 feet). Nowadays, the depth of the lake has reduced to only 3 meters (10 feet) in most of the parts. Several rivers drain into the Loktak Lake accumulating silt into it, making the lake shallower. It is also increasing plant growth.

A fisherman of Loktak Lake amidst tall grasses and overgrowth

As much as Loktak Lake is known for its floating masses or phumdis, they are actually strangling the lake. The silt is fuel to the plant growth. As the pollution in water rises, the plant growth also increases with the water level going down. With the decreasing depth of the lake, the fishes are also vanishing.

Government Action for Loktak Lake

The Government has undertaken various efforts to tackle the overgrowth in Loktak Lake. In 2011, the Loktak Development Authority went on a cleaning spree of the lake and cleared a large area of the lake of Phumdis and destroyed several huts. As many as 1132 floating huts and 100 huts were burnt down by the LDA and many families were displaced . While the people received compensation, it was clearly not adequate to start a new life.

Landscape and ecosystem of Loktak Lake

As of now, Loktak Lake is divided into two sections – a no-development zone and a conservation zone. The conservation zone is mostly clear of phumdis and nothing is allowed to be built in that area.

The no-development zone still has the fisherman huts and fishing is continued, but no new constructions are allowed in the area.

This is no way the ideal solution to save Loktak Lake and its people. Whatever solution is found, it has to be inclusive of both the lake and its people. This is something that we felt in the case of Dal Lake in Srinagar as well.

Can Tourism Save the Loktak Lake?

Aerial view of Loktak Lake Manipur

Unlike Dal Lake in Srinagar , tourism is yet at infancy in Loktak Lake. Manipur is yet to be prominent on the tourist map of India. There are people who are skeptical of visiting the state because of the insurgencies taking place here. But let me tell you, it is quite safe to visit Manipur. Though the number of travellers to Manipur is gradually increasing these days, the numbers are not huge. Also, it was our observation that the state is not yet equipped to handle a large footfall of tourists. Maybe with time, the infrastructure can be improved so that the tiny little state can handle tourism in a better way. Same can be said for the Loktak Lake. The area is still not ready for mass tourism.

An increase in tourism can definitely help the locals through means of homestays, boats and tour guides. However, it needs to be done gradually and with proper planning.

Loktak Lake Tourism – What to do at Lokatak Lake?

Now that we have spoken about tourism in Loktak Lake and you have decided to visit the place, let us discuss what are the places to visit at Loktak Lake.

1. Keibul Lamjao National Park

View of Loktak Lake

Home to the endangered Sangai deer, Keibul Lamjao National Park is the only floating National Park in the world and is one of its kind. It is perhaps the largest phumdi on the Loktak Lake on which the National Park is located.

The park has an area of 40 sq km and has a rich diversity of flora and fauna. You can take a boat ride inside the park. We would recommend you to take the boat ride at dawn because that is the time when there are maximum possibilities of getting a view of the elusive Sangai deer.

Unfortunately, we were not able to visit the park as it was yet to open up for tourists after the pandemic.

2. Visit the Loktak Lake Viewpoint

Loktak Lake Viewpoint - Things to do in Loktak Lake

Loktak Lake Viewpoint is a must visit place from where you will get a panoramic view of the lake. It is actually a hilltop and there is a watchtower from where you can get an all-encompassing view of the lake. From here, you will get an inkling of how huge the lake is. This is one of the best places to watch the sunrise over the Loktak Lake.

3. Take a morning Boat ride

Morning boat ride at Loktak Lake

Getting up early in the morning and taking a boat ride to watch the beauty of the lake is a great thing to do in Loktak Lake. It is a lovely way to experience life on Loktak Lake. You will encounter several fishermen and locals doing various odd jobs.

Sunrise at Loktak Lake - sky is cast with clouds

For us, it was a lovely experience. The sky was overcast with clouds that day and we went around the lake on a narrow boat. The boatman was singing various songs as he took us around the huge lake. By the time we were back, it had started drizzling. Boating at Loktak Lake was definitely one of the best experiences we had.

4. Visit the local islands – Sendra and Karang

Local islands at Loktak Lake

Loktak Lake is dotted with several small islands and you can visit a few of them. It will give you a glimpse of local life around the lake.

One of the larger islands is Sendra Island. It also has a tourist lodge on it and a small garden and a watch tower. Sendra Island is a common attraction for the locals as well. There is an entry fee of Rs 20 when we visited. You can roam around the island and even eat out at the restaurant there.

Another smaller island to visit is Karang Island. There is a local passenger boat that will take you to the island. There are several vantage points on the island from where you can see the lake the phumdis.

5. Watch the Sunset

Sunset sky at Loktak

While we were not quite lucky with the sunset at Loktak (because of an overcast sky), sunsets are beautiful in Loktak Lake. Hike up to any hill or just take a boat ride, you will be able to see a beautiful sunset. Just remember, the sun starts going down at around 4 PM here. So, plan accordingly.

Our Time at Loktak Lake

Our stay at the homestay on Loktak Lake was nothing short of pleasing. We enjoyed our slow and relaxing time in the midst of the lake without any worry of career, work, and life problems. Our conversations with our host helped us understand the life around Loktak Lake in a much better way.

Our Homestay at Loktak Lake

The next morning, we went for an early morning boat ride. Later we visited Sendra Island and the Loktak Viewpoint.

The entire place and our stay was so peaceful that we decided to stay another night at Loktak Lake. Our hosts were super happy to accommodate us for another day. As I mentioned earlier, the Keibul Lamjao National Park was closed and so we went to visit another offbeat place in Manipur – Churachandpur. More about that in a separate blog.

Our host with a fish

We enjoyed the local cuisine, fish curries and the food that our hosts prepared for us. And at night we simply looked at the star studded sky and enjoyed our time together.

Honestly, this slow and leisurely trip to Loktak Lake was one of the best trips we had in years.

Loktak Lake Travel Guide (FAQs Answered)

How to reach loktak lake.

The best way to reach Loktak Lake is to start from Imphal and reach Moirang. From Imphal, you will get shared taxis to Moirang from Jiribam-Imphal road , close to Ima Keithel or Mother’s Market. That is the main market area of Imphal. If you do not see one around, ask the locals and they will point you in the right direction.

The journey of 30 odd kilometers to Moirang will take about an hour. Moirang is a small town with a small market. There is the INA Museum dedicated to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose that you can visit.

INA Museum dedicated to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at Moirang

Moirang to Thanga

From Moirang, you have to take another shared taxi to Thanga. Here too, ask the help of the locals who will point you to the right destination. Thanga is actually the cluster of villages that make up a peninsula on the Loktak Lake.

Finally, you can always ask your homestay owner to pick you up from Moirang. Our host picked us up from Moirang and took us to the lakeside from where we took a boat to our homestay.

Where to Stay at Loktak Lake?

Homestays at Lokatak Lake, Manipur

The biggest hotel is at Sendra Island. You can book you stay at Sendra cottages. Sendra Island can be accessed from Thanga. There are a couple of homestays at Thanga as well.

There are also a few homestays on the lake itself. We stayed at Loktak Aquamarine Homestay. You can book your stay from here.

How can you be a responsible Tourist to Loktak Lake?

Overtourism is very much real now. While tourism can uplift the livelihood of the local people, it can also be a curse for the environment. To be honest, Loktak Lake is still not equipped to handle a large influx of tourists. While efforts are being made to provide a sustainable income to locals through tourism, the place is yet not immune to the hazards of tourism.

If you are planning to visit Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao National Park and Manipur in general, we urge you to be a responsible tourist and travel consciously. Here are a few things that can help and leave a positive impact –

  • Firstly, limit the use of single use plastics. If possible, refrain using mineral water bottles. Clean and filtered water is available and you can refill your bottles. Even if you are using plastics, do not leave them around. Also, do not drop anything in the lake waters.
  • If possible, stay at a local homestay over hotels. In this way, you can help the locals directly.
  • Avoid having Maggi and taste the local cuisine and homestay cooked food.
  • For boat rides, use wooden boats by the fishermen to row you around. Your homestay owner can help you arrange a boat.
  • Talk to the locals. Listen to their stories and share your stories with them. I am sure you will enjoy it a lot and so will they.
