While I was at Coco Cabana, a prominent Japanese BonBon festival was happening over the weekend, and the atmosphere, with night entertainment and food stalls, was electric. I enjoyed trying different Japanese foods and watching the traditional Japanese dance performances. It was a fantastic experience.

Although events don’t happen every weekend at Coco Cabana, it doesn’t take away from the Miri attraction. The Sunset Bar, in particular, is a must-visit spot. They serve delicious food, and their signature cocktails are out of this world. The bar overlooks the sea and provides the perfect setting for a relaxing evening—no wonder it’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

There’s always something happening at Coco Cabana, from the Sea Horse Statue, a popular photo spot, to various restaurants. The beachfront is perfect for long walks, and the sea breeze is refreshing. Miri acts as a gateway to four surrounding national parks, beaches and occasionally hosts the enchanting Blue Tears too.

1. Panoramic views from Canada Hill

Canada Hill, sometimes called Miri Hill, towers behind the city center.

The limestone hill reaches a height of 150 meters (492 feet). A network of easy trails leads to its summit for the city’s best views.

Lambir Hills provides visitors with the chance to go jungle trekking near Miri.

Dozens of marked trails penetrate the rainforest. Some pass through differing ecosystems to waterfalls. Others rise to vantage points and natural pools.

Having a guide is essential.

Listen to their expertise as they identify the howls of distance gibbons and point to the occasional sun bear camouflaged against the tree trunks.

The most popular trails lead to both Pantu Waterfall and Latak Waterfall.

Pack plenty of water. Bring leech socks.

13. An equatorial sunset on Brighton Beach

Miri’s Brighton Beach is a highlight of the city.

Known locally as Tanjung Lobang, the beach with its two characteristic piers stretches along the South China Sea.

Local families play in the sand and swim in the warm, gentle waters. The wafting smell of barbeques hangs in the evening air.

But the real magic happens around 6:00pm when the equatorial sun dips towards the horizon. A mirage of oranges, purples and reds spread across the distant sky.

After sunset, stroll along the promenade and pick up some fresh seafood in the many beachside restaurants.

14. Empty beaches and strange rock formations on Tusan Beach

Tusan Beach is just far enough from Miri to keep the visitor numbers at bay. But close enough to reach within 30 minutes by car.

The beach itself has a long sandy coastline and gentle waters. Vertical sandstone cliffs tower against Tusan’s sandy shore.

Come down in the afternoon with your towel and enjoy the privacy of an empty beach for a few hours.

Or bring the camera and capture the strange rock formations caused by decades of erosion.

15. Witness the rare and hypnotic Blue Tears

The ocean and sea bursts with life so small that we need a microscope to see them.

Some of these micro-organisms are called dinoflagellates. Dinoflagellates have an uncanny ability to generate light under certain conditions.

Tusan Beach, when everything is just right, transforms into a glowing blue mass.

Tiny organisms glow neon blue which spreads across the sea as the waves roll in.

This natural phenomenon is known as the ‘Blue Tears’ in Sarawak and sometimes takes place at Tusan.

Witnessing this natural spectacle is both enthralling and awe-inspiring.

But it doesn’t happen every night, and you’ll need a big dose of luck to see it.

The Top Things to Do in Miri, Malaysia

Malaysia ‘s booming oil town is in northern Sarawak, beside the South China Sea. Whatever your holiday desires, Miri will fulfil them, as it’s rich in beaches, urban parks and handicraft centres. It’s also the gateway to four nearby national parks, including Gunung Mulu – one of the finest in Southeast Asia. Here they are, Culture Trip’s favourite things to do in Miri.

1. visit sarawak’s best strand, tusan beach.

Natural Feature

Around an hour’s drive from Miri lies this slender stretch of white-sand beaches, backed by limestone and sandstone cliffs. There’s also a lovely rock that resembles a horse’s head bowed to the beach. City slickers love Tusan for a serene day out. The views before you descend are magical, but stick around on the beach until nightfall for the chance to witness the bioluminescence: the so-called “blue tears” are from tiny micro-organisms that emit ethereal light. The sea begins to sparkle like a star-studded sky.

2. Stroll Miri City Fan Recreation Park

All things to everyone – this triumph of an urban park is so named because it traces the outline of a traditional handheld fan. You’ll find a range of themed gardens, among them Botanical, Chinese, Health and Islamic. What you wouldn’t guess is that it’s also home to the Miri City Library, an amphitheatre and a huge public pool. Then there are the murals and statues here, there and everywhere, depicting the history of Malaysia. For all the activities, it’s also great to just sit on a bench watching families strolling and couples jogging.

It’s in a straightforward residential neighbourhood, which makes this colourful, ornate Buddhist temple demand your attention even more. Architecturally, it’s textbook-photogenic, with two large dragons guarding the entrance at the top of the steps. You don’t come to this place for urgent appointments, rather for a meditative morning or afternoon, contemplating the beautiful tiles and hanging red lanterns, as well as the orange flicker of koi carp in the lobby fish ponds.

6. Browse Tamu Muhibbah market

If you’ve just disembarked your bus in the central station, you might want to head straight to this nearby institution – a market busy with whirlpools of shoppers, picking at teetering piles of sweet, sun-ripened pineapples, long tapioca tubers and fresh and nose-wrinklingly pungent dried fish. Stock up on great-value spices, handicrafts and produce from upriver areas as well, including neatly stacked sacks of fragrant Bario rice from the highlands.

7. Eat top Kelabit cuisine at the Summit Cafe

You’ll need to queue, but you won’t regret the authentic cuisine from the Kelabit Highlands dished up at the Summit Cafe. Take your pick from the colourful traditional dishes displayed on the counter at this no-frills restaurant just off Jalan Melayu. Do try dure (fried jungle leaf), minced tapioca leaves and daun ubi (sweet potato leaves). It’s always packed, with diners inside and outside happily eating at the plastic chairs and tables, so get there early.

8. See spectacular views from Canada Hill

Canada Hill, or Bukit Telaga Minyak in Bahasa Malaysia , is a limestone hill a short drive inland from Miri. In 1910, this became the site of Malaysia’s first oil drill, giving birth to the long and lucrative industry driving the country’s economy today. The Grand Old Lady, a replica of the first oil well, soars 30m (100ft) at the top of the hill. Enjoy the panoramic views of Miri and the South China Sea – it’s best to be here at sunrise or sunset.

9. Stock up at Miri Handicraft Centre

Did you come all this way just to look around malls? This emporium, on Jalan Brooke, is a terrific source of authentic arts and crafts from northern Sarawak. Stalls are run by the artisans themselves, and you can often watch them working – making basketry using plants gathered from the forests, shaping pottery and finessing jewellery. Your list should include Penang mats, Orang Ulu beadwork, or bolts of ikat, tie-dyed and skilfully woven on a loom – an experienced weaver requires an inspirational dream to create a new design and a variety of textiles from around the state. Cultural performances are occasionally held on weekends.

10. Have a dusk drink at Miri Sky Bar

If you’re shopped out and footsore after a session at the Miri Handicraft Centre, this place is close by: 17 floors up at the Meritz Hotel. The Miri Sky Bar majors in delicious dishes and drinks – in particular, try the so-called “steamboat buffet”, which involves dipping raw ingredients fondue-style in a boiling soup base at the table. This is the place to come for a few sunset selfies over one of the generous shared cocktails, as your pulse slows on the terrace, overlooking the city and South China Sea.

Top Things to Do in Miri | 10 Days in Miri Mulu

Miri is all but a sleepy town.

Located in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, about a two-hour drive from neighbouring country Brunei, Miri plays a crucial role in modern-day Malaysia and is an excellent gateway to marvellous natural wonders and UNESCO sites .

It houses Malaysia’s first petroleum well – first struck in 1910 – and powered the growth of the country’s oil and gas company Petronas , which ultimately contributed to the prosperity of the city.

We were on a 10-day trip in Miri and Mulu, and here is a guide to the list of places we went and activities we did to inspire your planning.

Our 10-day sojourn is broken into three parts – Miri Old Town , Mulu National Park , and Miri Marina Bay .

If this is your first time reading my blog – welcome! – know that my trips incline towards outdoorsy activities more so than city tours or cafe hopping. Miri Mulu is my first overseas trip after a two-year-long working holiday adventure in New Zealand .

Travelling within Miri is easy.

As with most other Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, you could easily hail a taxi through the app Grab . It costs us less than RM15 to travel anywhere within Miri.

We hired a car for two days to travel to places outside Miri like Gua Niah . Car rental and petrol are affordable. It costs us around RM100 per day and the same for a full tank. Remember to purchase parking tickets from convenience stores for parking within the city.

As for getting to Mulu National Park, the only reasonable way is by flight, which costs less than SGD100 (2022 prices) for a return journey with Maswings .

Accommodation

Being the ever-budget-conscious backpackers, we stayed in one of the many OYO franchise motels in the old town and later Marina Bay area for about RM 30 per person per night (2022 prices).

For something better, have a look at Amigo Hotel , Walk Inn , or the Grand Palace Hotel .

There are also 5-star international hotels like Marriott and Pullman .

Stating this upfront: we did not anticipate spending more than three days in Miri. Our plan was to dive in Miri-Sibuti Marine Park for two to three days, but bad weather foiled that. We did squeeze in a day’s worth of diving towards the end of the trip after the storm had passed.

The silver lining, if you could think of it that way, was more time spent exploring all the possible nooks and crannies of the city.

Within Miri City

Most places of interest are within walking distance from our motel in the Old Town . We stayed two nights in the Marina Bay area after Mulu National Park and found the area to contain more chic cafes, unique restaurants and cool bars.

Warning: I like to think we are hardy people so we mostly walked under the afternoon sun to get to those places. But the Mirian sun burns more – and stings the eyes more, especially if you are driving – than the sun in Singapore if that makes sense. Our Mirian friends blame the sea.

Beyond Miri City

The usual places beyond Miri City include exploring the UNESCO-nominated site Gua Niah/ Niah Cave , doing a half-day hike at Lambir Hills , and beaches like Tusan Beach or Brighton Beach .

Information on the sights beyond Miri is incredibly sparse.

We intend to coincide our visit to Tusan beach on a full moon night to see if we could catch the phenomenal Blue Tears . However several reviews dating back to 2021 state the deplorable conditions of the beach, which made us think otherwise. The famous rock formation that has been widely circulated on the internet is also no longer there. That ultimately led us to choose Tanjong Lobang Beach for the 6.40 pm sunset instead.

Miri is a popular base to fly to the UNESCO site Mulu National Park for its impressive cave chambers and ecologically diverse tropical forest. We visited the Mulu caves and did a challenging trek to the Pinnacles .

Do you know the underwater world of Miri is more than impressive? We managed to squeeze in a day to dive at the Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park , which coincided with Sarawak Independence Day !

My 10 days in Miri x Mulu

We had delicious rice noodles at WZT Cafe , spent our first evening wandering up and down Wireless Walk Miri at Jalan North Yu Seng and Jalan Merpati, and visited the malls .

The next morning saw us slurping up more noodles and chicken curry rice at Miri Central Market , while locals engaged in their daily marketing activities.

We stopped by one of the several beautiful murals and wandered into an old but quirky shopping complex – Old Man Street .

Afternoons are hot, and since we cannot explore the sea, we dived into Lemongrass Family Reflexology for some well-deserved massage instead.

What’s next after a dreamy Thai massage? Some more delicious food – Kuching Laksa – at 63 Cafe .

The Miri City Fan was a bore, to be honest, and our saving grace for that long walk was a couple of cooling ice kacang at Sin Wan Delight & Cold Drink .

We grabbed to Canada Hill , located behind Miri City, where Shell first drilled oil in Malaysia. The now-defunct oil well, affectionately named The Grand Old Lady , is a replica of Malaysia’s first oil well.

Situated behind the monument is a free, albeit run down and poorly maintained, museum – the Petroleum Museum – on the history of oil in Miri.

A giant ‘Miri’ sign landmark was recently set up (we saw it spruced up for its opening!) and added more colours to the hill.

Apart from visiting the landmarks and enjoying the panoramic sunset from the cafe by the huge sign, you could combine the experience with hiking the hill – as most locals did in the evenings.

That day ended with a fatty meal from the Saberkas Night Market , which opens at 5 pm every Thursday to Saturday.

Our third day in Miri was to Gua Niah , where we drove in our rented car and spent a day there.

On our third day in the Old Town, we drove to Thien Sin Prawn Mee to have some divine prawn noodles for breakfast (it errs on the expensive side, but the price is justified!).

Next was another random jalan-jalan around the streets of Old Town to see what we missed.

We wandered into the small streets of Miri Chinatown (around the Central Market) and visited the oldest Buddhist Temple in Miri – Tua Pek Kong .

The Handicraft Centre , the so-called ‘most recommended place in Miri to buy souvenirs, was disappointing.

Lunch at Surabaya Restoran was delicious – the fried fish and spicy chilli padi tickle my ears.

The 6.40 pm sunset at Tanjong Lobang Beach was divine.

Day Five – Day Nine

Our next five days were in Mulu National Park .

We spent Day One visiting Deer and Lang Caves and spectated the daily bat exodus . Visits to the Wind and Clearwater Caves, followed by a three-hour trek to Camp 5 happened on Day Two. Day Three saw us scrambling up and down the difficult 2.4 km trek to the Pinnacles . We trekked out of the forest on Day Four and flew back to Miri on Day Five.

Naturally one could only indulge themselves with more Thai massage and delicious food upon landing in Miri after five days of Mulu.

Alas, a day spent exploring the underwater world of Miri at Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park ! The weather finally cleared up. After hours of intense and frantic communication with several dive shops the day before, the people of The Dive Squad at Piasau Boat Club managed to swap us in with others who would dive a day later instead.

Diving on Sarawak Independence Day was nothing short of special as we met true-blue Mirians who dived with their state’s flag.

We spent the last half-day in Miri grabbing to Coco Cabanas to snap a selfie with the gigantic seahorse. Then it was a cuppa in Chapter One Cafe , and later back in the airport to face reality.

Conclusion/ Rambles

I’m so glad I’ve finally visited the Bornean side of Malaysia and explored one of the biggest cave chambers in the world! Cost-wise, this trip isn’t exorbitant vis a vis the experiences we had gathered – hiking in a tropical forest saturated with wild animals, visiting the caves, climbing the pinnacles, eating and massaging as and when we want it, and scuba diving.

My 10 – or rather 11 – days in Miri was a mix of leisure and exertion, and a great trip to explore the sights and sounds of Eastern Malaysia and Borneo.

Top Miri Attractions

Welcome to my Top Miri Attractions page. 

Miri is the second largest city in Sarawak with a population close to a quarter of a million but until oil was first drilled in 1910 it was little more than a fishing village. The town developed rapidly following the discovery of oil and it became the administrative centre for northern Sarawak by 1929. 

There is not a huge amount for tourists to see in the city itself and most visitors pass through rapidly on their way to Mulu Caves or Niah Caves, but there are a few sights in town for those who are not in a hurry. Here are my suggested top Miri attractions. Most can be covered on foot if you are staying near the city centre.

1. Handicraft Heritage Centre

This building on the corner of Jalan Merbau and Jalan Brooke contains a number of shops selling local handicraft products. Borneo, in my opinion, has the best handicrafts in Malaysia and this is a good place to buy them. Unlike many other parts of Malaysia, where souvenir items are imported from China, most of the items sold here are made locally or are from nearby Kalimantan.

2. Sarawak Handicraft

Nearby on Jalan Merbau is another handicraft shop, Sarawak Handicraft, which sells a good range of tribal art and souvenirs.

3. Petroleum Museum

On Canada Hill overlooking the city centre is the site of The Grand Old Lady, Malaysia’s first oil well, and the Petroleum Museum. See my review here.

4. Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple

This hundred year old temple dates back to Miri’s earliest days and is dedicated to a deity who is credited with curing an epidemic which was ravaging the town in those days. It was one of the few buildings to survive the Allied bombing of the town in WWII. Miri’s main fish market is located next door.

5. Shopping

There are a few modern malls in the newer parts of town as well as more traditional shopping streets offering all manner of goods. Visitors from Brunei, which is a short drive away, like to shop in Miri to enjoy lower prices than back home and to enjoy goods and services which are unobtainable in Brunei.

6. Miri City Fan

This is a landscaped park with a musical fountain, Islamic Garden, health Garden, Chinese Garden and more, surrounded by facilities such as a public swimming pool, library and civic centre.

7. Taman Bunga

Another smaller park contains a topiary and bonsai garden, ornamental garden, conifer garden, succulents, orchids and a pond.

9. Miri Crocodile Farm

I have not been to this place but it is said to house over 1,000 crocs plus a number of other creatures.

Niah Caves is usually ranked as the second best cave complex in Malaysia after Mulu Caves. It is also rated as the best place to go in the Miri area of northern Sarawak, besides Mulu. See my review here.

As one of the most popular destinations in Sarawak , Miri forms a gateway to the famous Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park . Miri used to be a bit of a cowboy village in the past, where people mainly came in search of oil. It is said that Malaysia's petroleum industry once started in Miri. Years later however, Miri grew out to be a modern city though still a bit overshadowed by the neighboring oil state of Brunei (Miri was granted city status in 2005). The city is home to a population of about 300,000 people, and this makes it the second biggest city of Sarawak behind Kuching . For the best views on the city of Miri you should visit Bukit Telaga Minyak (Canada Hill). The coast of Miri is a great place to dive; especially around the recent discovered diving spots Miri/Sibuti Marine National Park. Although it is not yet a very famous or crowded diving spot, the unspoiled coral is dazzling and absolutely worth a visit when you're a dive enthusiast as it contains a variety of coral and marine life that rivals the best anywhere in Borneo .

Attractions in and around miri.

Miri is the main tourist gateway for numerous wildlife attractions. The world famous Gunung Mulu National Park with the Sarawak Chamber (biggest cave in the world - UNESCO World Heritage Site) is one of the most popular eco-tourism destinations in Sarawak; reachable by air in 30 minutes. Miri is also the main gateway for Loagan Bunut National Park (Sarawak's largest natural lake), Lambir National Park (12th site with biggest biodiversity in the world) and Niah National Park with its fantastic caves and waterfalls.

Some interesting sights within and directly around Miri are the Unity Tower, Pustaka Miri, Petroleum Museum, views over Miri city from top of Canada Hill, the San Ching Tian Temple and the Esplanade Beach at Luak Bay.

Borneo Jazz (Miri International Jazz Festival)

Every year Miri is host of one of the biggest events in Sarawak; Borneo Jazz (formerly known as Miri International Jazz Festival or MIJF) that usually takes place in the month of May. The event is held at the pavilion of Parkcity Everly Hotel. Performances are daily from 6pm to 12 midnight. Borneo Jazz aims to be the leading tourism-driven music festival in the region by assembling regionally and internationally recognized jazz musicians from the US, Europe, Australia and Asia performing jazz funky latin, oriental jazz, carribean roots, blues, contemporary fusion, boogie woogie and more. The event draws visitors to Miri and the Northern Region of Sarawak for a fun-filled and entertaining experience and at the same time showcasing Miri as a city of cosmopolitanism and relaxing lifestyle. The Miri International Jazz Festival is organized by the Sarawak Tourism Board in collaboration with a select group of people from private sectors.

Nearby Labuan Island

Miri is also the place from where a jetty to the federal territory of Labuan leaves. Labuan is a tax free offshore island north of Brunei where it is possible to start your own offshore company without much hassle. You can register a Labuan company for around $1.500 (initial costs) and another $1.200 yearly (prices may vary). A great benefit of a Labuan company is that you - as director - are able to get yourself a directors (work) permit that way. Some people use this to settle in Malaysia without having to work within Malaysia as that's perhaps one of the big downsides; you cannot work within Malaysia; with Malaysian companies or with Malaysians. Besides being an offshore investment heaven people also visit Labuan for great diving.

Miri is also well known as a shopping paradise; especially among the neighboring Bruneians. Rich Brunei citizens come to spend their money as products are much cheaper in Malaysia. Noteworthy shopping malls in Miri are: Permy mall, Bintang megamall, Boulevard shopping complex, Imperial shopping mall, E-Mart, Miri plaza and Wisma Pelita mall. Brand new malls that are currently being built are: MYY mall, Merdeka mall (semi open to public) and Senadin mall.

How to get to Miri

The only way to get to Miri from the Peninsular Malaysia is by air and there are several daily flights from Kuala Lumpur . Two airlines operate on this route; Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia . Malaysia Airlines departs from KLIA (domestic) and AirAsia departs from LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal). Both airlines also fly daily from Johor Bahru , Kota Kinabalu and Kuching to Miri. Some Malaysia Airlines routes are operated by MASwings . AirAsia also started a direct connection between Singapore and Miri. From Miri international airport you can take a taxi to your hotel. You can buy taxi tickets at the taxi counter for a fixed price.

From Miri to Mulu National Park

Visiting Mulu World Heritage Area is a journey into the interior of Borneo. MASWings operates two daily flights from Miri into Mulu. Flights from Miri to Mulu take about 30 minutes. Mulu can also be reached by boat or overland by 4x4 over rough timber tracks, both of which will approximately take 8-10 hours to reach the National Park. This option is only relevant for real adventurous travelers as there is no actual road access or highway between Miri and Mulu.

From Miri to Niah National Park

Syarikat Bas Suria departs from the Miri bus station to Batu Niah town. The journey takes well over an hour (109km by road) to up to two hours depending on weather conditions. From Niah town, you can either take a speedboat (nice scenery), taxi or walk to the Niah National Park headquarters at Pengkalan Batu. You can also use a rather expensive taxi from Miri (you can try to share one with others) which will take you directly to the main park entrance.

American tourist facing possible 12-year prison sentence after ammo found in luggage in Turks and Caicos

Valerie Watson returned to Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport in tears on Tuesday morning in a drastic departure from how she imagined her long weekend trip to Turks and Caicos would end.

Watson is home, but her husband, Ryan Watson, was jailed on the island and is facing a potential mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years behind bars after airport security allegedly found four rounds of hunting ammo in his carry-on bag earlier this month. 

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News. "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

Valerie Watson, who learned Sunday she would not be charged and would be allowed to return home, said the trip "went from what was supposed to be a dream vacation to a nightmare."

Ryan Watson was released on bail after two nights , but must remain on the island and check in with police twice a week.

The Watsons are not the only ones going through this ordeal.

Bryan Hagerich is awaiting trial after ammo was found in the Pennsylvania man's checked bag in February.

"I subsequently spent eight nights in their local jail. Some of the darkest, hardest times of my life, quite frankly," Hagerich said. "These last 70 days have been kind of a roller coaster, just the pain and suffering of having your family at home and I'm here."

Possessing a gun or ammunition is prohibited in Turks and Caicos, but tourists were previously often able to just pay a fine. In February, however, a court order mandated that even tourists in the process of leaving the country are subject to prison time.

Since November 2022, eight firearms and ammunition prosecutions in total have been brought involving tourists from the United States, three of which are currently before the court with each of the defendants on bail.

Last year, a judge found Michael Grim from Indiana had "exceptional circumstances" when he pleaded guilty to accidentally having ammunition in his checked bag. He served almost six months in prison. 

"No clean running water. You're kind of exposed to the environment 24/7," he told CBS News. "Mosquitoes and tropical illnesses are a real concern. There's some hostile actors in the prison."

The judge was hoping to send a message to other Americans. 

"[His] sentencing was completely predicated on the fact that I was an American," Grim said. 

The U.S. embassy last September posted a travel alert online, warning people to "check your luggage for stray ammunition," noting it would "not be able to secure your release from custody."

In a statement, a State Department spokesperson told CBS News, "We are aware of the arrest of U.S. citizens in Turks and Caicos.  When a U.S. citizen is arrested overseas, we stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. In a foreign country, U.S. citizens are subject to that country's laws, even if they differ from those in the United States." 

Last year, TSA found a record 6,737 guns at airport security checkpoints, and most of them were loaded.  

"I can't even begin to think that this very innocent, regrettable mistake would prevent me from being able to watch my son graduate or teach him to shave or take my daughter to dances," Ryan Watson said. "It's just unfathomable. I do not — I can't process it."

The Turks and Caicos government responded to CBS News in a lengthy statement confirming the law and reiterating that, even if extenuating circumstances are found to be present, the judge is required to mandate prison time.

Deep Beneath London, Onetime Bomb Shelters Will Become a Tourist Attraction

Used for spying, a phone exchange and more over the years, a semi-secret web of tunnels in central London could open to the public in 2027.

There’s a locked door on the eastbound platform of the Chancery Lane station of the London Underground. The door is unassuming, sturdy and white.

Behind it is a wide set of stairs leading to a roughly mile-long maze of tunnels built in the 1940s that were first intended to serve as a World War II shelter and later used for espionage, the storage of 400 tons of government documents and telecom services.

Welcome to the Kingsway Exchange tunnels, set roughly 100 feet below street level in the center of London, sprawling beneath the Underground’s Central Line. Soon they could enter a new chapter: Angus Murray, the owner of the complex, who bought the tunnels last summer, has applied for planning permission to the local authorities together with the architecture firm WilkinsonEyre to turn the tunnels into a tourist destination that could handle millions of people a year.

Mr. Murray’s London Tunnels is planning to invest a total of 220 million pounds (about $275 million) on restoring and preserving the tunnels, as well as adding technology for art installations and other attractions. Mr. Murray hopes to open the complex in 2027, and said that it would be able to host temporary art exhibitions, fashion shows and more.

At the moment, entering the tunnels requires riding a small elevator tucked behind a side door in an alleyway off a wide street in central London. (Visitors to the attraction would use a different, bigger entrance, Mr. Murray said.)

When the elevator doors open, you step into a World War II-era tunnel — one of 10 civilian shelters proposed by the British government after the beginning of the Blitz, the eight-month bombing of London by the Germans that started in September 1940. The tunnels were never used as shelters. By the time they were completed in 1942, the Blitz was over.

During the Cold War, the British government instructed its telephone department, which later became British Telecom, to set up a secret communications system in the tunnels that could survive a nuclear attack. The famous hotline between the Kremlin and the White House ran through the complex, according to the project’s website. Some of the phone exchange’s equipment in the tunnels still survives today, even though it hasn’t been used since at least the 1980s.

“The idea was that it would provide a degree of protection,” said Martin Dixon, a trustee for Subterranea Britannica , a charity that documents and tries to preserve underground spaces.

“If the Cold War had turned into something more serious, it would have allowed communications on some level to continue,” Mr. Dixon, who joined Subterranea Britannica about 40 years ago, said.

The tunnels under the Chancery Lane station of the tube are more than a mile long and in some places have a diameter of almost 25 feet. Those dimensions make them among the largest sets of tunnels built for people in a metropolitan city, Mr. Murray said.

“They have a fascinating history,” he said.

For a group of Post Office and telecoms workers in the decades after World War II, the tunnel complex became a workplace, some aspects of which have survived. In one room, the stuffy smell of an old carpet is inescapable. Another still holds the remnants of a canteen. Yet another has fake windows framing images of nature as decorations. There are still offices, as well as rooms where workers could spend the night.

Some parts of the tunnels are lined with fake walls, and doors with nothing behind them. The effect is not unlike watching a scene from the dystopian Apple TV+ show “Severance .”

A bar where postal workers could drink is also still there, and Mr. Murray said he hoped to revive it and make it London’s deepest underground bar.

The tunnels’ communication operation became obsolete in the 1980s, and in 2008 British Telecom put the tunnels up for sale . BT employees used to go down into the complex up until the 1990s to inspect for fire safety and other conditions. The tunnels were otherwise vacant.

Many details of the new attraction still need to be ironed out, but Mr. Murray said the cost of the experience would probably be in the same price range as that of other major tourist sites in London. (The Tower of London’s entry fee is about $40, and Westminster Abbey’s is about $36.)

Mr. Dixon, of Subterranea Britannica, said he was excited about the prospect of the Kingsway Exchange turning into an attraction — provided it’s safe and the history is preserved.

“I’ve seen thousands of underground spaces, from the mundane to the spectacular,” he said. The Kingsway Exchange is particularly interesting, he added, because of all the different functions it had. “It played its part in World War II, and was ready to play its part in the Cold War.”

U.S. reissues Level 2 travel warning for Germany. Here’s what you need to know before your next trip

The U.S. State Department has reissued a Level 2 travel advisory for Germany due to fears of terrorism.

The State Department issued the advisory on Wednesday, ranking the travel advisory on a scale of two out of four. This means that those traveling to an area must “exercise increased caution.”

“Terrorists may attack with little or no warning,” the State Department noted.

The agency added that terrorists could target tourism and transportation hubs, as well as shopping destinations, hotels, clubs, restaurants, local government facilities and major events.

The State Department noted on its website that for those who do decide to travel to Germany, travelers should pay attention to their surroundings , follow the instructions of local authorities, be aware of the latest breaking news in the area and adjust your plans, if necessary. The organization also urges travelers to Germany to create a contingency plan for emergency situations as well as sign up for the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive alerts and make it easier for the State Department to locate you in case of an emergency.

The U.S. Department of State has issued several travel warnings this year with those most recently centered around the Caribbean.

One was a Level 4 “do not travel” warning against traveling to the country of Haiti due to kidnappings and gang violence.

Another warning from the State Department cautioned travelers to “reconsider travel” to the country of Jamaica after 65 people were murdered in one month.
