What to Know

Peter Jackson's return to Middle-earth is an earnest, visually resplendent trip, but the film's deliberate pace robs the material of some of its majesty.

Deviations from the book [ ]

  • [1] Elijah Wood appears briefly as Frodo Baggins , while this character does not appear in the book. However, his appearance is purely a cameo as the set-up for the movie, as the Red Book of Westmarch is being written and read by Bilbo, shortly before the start of The Fellowship of the Ring .
  • The Dwarves do not arrive in order (first Dwalin, then Balin, then Kíli and Fíli, then Óin, Glóin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur all at once, and then Thorin arrives significantly later) and they do not have their multi-colored hoods or beards as they did in the book.
  • Bilbo was shown to be allergic to Horses .
  • The Dwarves surrender when the Trolls threaten to rip Bilbo in two instead of being overpowered and popped into bags.
  • Bilbo goes to the Trolls because they steal the Dwarves' ponies.
  • In the book, it was Gandalf that stalled the trolls until they turned into stone. This was done by Bilbo in the film.
  • The trolls' cave is wide open, and there is no locked door blocking it.
  • In the book, Bilbo finds Sting and takes it. In the film, Gandalf comes upon it and gives it to Bilbo.
  • The group is attacked by Orcs on the way to Rivendell , just after the Trolls sequence in the movie. This did not happen in the book.
  • Radagast the Brown aids the Dwarves in escaping the Orc Warg-riders near Rivendell. In contrast, Radagast did not appear in the book at all, and there is only one mention of him.
  • Radagast investigates the darkness of Mirkwood, and at Dol Guldur encounters the Necromancer and the Witch-king of Angmar , with whom he briefly duels and from whom he takes a Morgul Blade. In contrast, Tolkien never wrote of any such incident.
  • Azog has survived the War of the Dwarves and Orcs in which he was wounded by Thorin, who cut off his arm, and hunts Thorin Oakenshield and his followers. In contrast, in the Tolkien literature Azog was beheaded by Thorin's cousin Dáin Ironfoot in the Battle of Azanulbizar , well before the events of The Hobbit . The events of leading to and included in the battle are also altered: Thrór leads an army to Moria to reclaim it as opposed to investigating it with a single companion, and he is beheaded during the battle while in the books this occurred several years beforehand. The origin of Thorin's name of Oakenshield is taken from the appendices of The Return of the King , but here takes place during battle with Azog and involves him picking up an oaken branch rather than cutting it off a tree.
  • While at Rivendell with Thorin's party, Gandalf meets with Elrond , Galadriel , and Saruman (the film's version of the White Council ) and relates Radagast's news about Mirkwood, but Saruman discounts Radagast's news about the Necromancer, who he says must be no more than a human pretending to be a wizard. This conflicts with Tolkien's version, in which the White Council already knew that the Necromancer was Sauron and was at Dol Guldur , since Gandalf had already confirmed this 89 years earlier, and Saruman had discovered two years earlier (although he did not inform the Council of this) that Sauron had learned of Isildur 's loss of the One Ring at the Gladden Fields by the river Anduin and his servants were searching the area. Accordingly, in Tolkien's original version, in the year of the events of The Hobbit , Saruman finally agreed to an attack on Dol Guldur because he wanted to prevent Sauron from finding the Ring. [2]
  • There is no mention of Galadriel in the book, although she is part of the White Council.
  • At the White Council meeting, Galadriel relates how the Witch-king of Angmar, after his defeat near Fornost , had been killed and sealed in a tomb in that could not be opened in the High Fells . This is a serious departure from canon (Tolkien's writings), in which the Witch-king had not died, but fled. In fact, Glorfindel had stopped pursuit of the Witch-king and prophesied, "Do not pursue him! He will not return to these lands. Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man will he fall." [3] This prophecy, of course, was the basis for the later dramatic moment in The Lord of the Rings in which Éowyn was able to kill the Witch-king because she was not a man. This prophecy no longer makes sense if the Witch-king had already been killed and is now (as Saruman implies) just a spirit raised by a necromancer who could "summon the dead." Furthermore, per Tolkien the White Council knew the Witch-king had not been killed because he and the rest of the Nazgûl had previously been fighting with Gondor and had captured (and presumably killed) the last King of Gondor at Minas Morgul in TA 2050, long after he had fled Fornost [2] . It is possible, however, that the Ringwraiths could not die due to their Wraith nature and were imprisoned in the tombs, and only Sauron had the power to call them forth. As for how they presumably killed the last King of Gondor , Galadriel never specifically says if the other Ringwraiths were sealed in the High Fells along with the Witch-king when Angmar fell. So it is possible that the other Ringwraiths challenged and killed Eärnur , and were defeated and sealed with their leader centuries later.
  • When traveling along the mountain pass, Bilbo observes the stone-giants hurling rocks at a distance, "across the valley." Bilbo and his companions take refuge under a hanging rock during the thunderstorm (thunder-battle), but are never involved in the stone-giants' game.
  • In the book, it was Bilbo that alerted the party when the trapdoors in the Front Porch open. In the film, the Dwarves realize this just as they fall into the hole.
  • In the book, the Goblins only had tunnels, not rope bridges.
  • In the book, Bilbo is with the Dwarves when they are taken to the Great Goblin and later rescued by Gandalf. In the film, Bilbo is separated from the group and falls to Gollum's cave before the Dwarves are taken to the Great Goblin.
  • In the book The Hobbit , as in the prologue to The Fellowship of the Ring film , Bilbo Baggins finds the One Ring by chance when his hand happens to fall upon it as he is crawling through one of the dark Goblin-town tunnels, well before he comes across Gollum. In this film, Bilbo sees Gollum fighting with a Goblin and we see Gollum drop the Ring during the fight.
  • Gollum has six teeth in the book, not nine.
  • In the book, when Gollum and Bilbo were playing the game of riddles, the cave was pitch black and Bilbo could only see Gollum's glowing eyes and hear his voice echoing through the walls of the cave. In the film, the cave was partly lit up and Bilbo could see Gollum entirely.
  • In the book, Gandalf saves the Dwarves in the goblin cave with a storm of burning smoke and instantly slays the Goblin King with his blade. In the film, the Goblin King is merely knocked aside in this scene (though many of his minions die in the telekinetic blast), and slain later on.
  • In the film, Gandalf does not use multi-colored fire when lighting the pine cones.

Quizzing the Dwarves

Extended Edition [ ]

The extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released on October 22 , 2013 for digital downloads and November 5 2013 for hard copies. It includes these scenes:

  • The introduction. The Elvenking Thranduil is given more screen time. He approaches the throne while Thráin gestures for a Dwarf to show Thranduil a chest of gems. As Thranduil looks entranced and reaches for it, the Dwarf closes the lid. Bard's ancestor Girion is given screen time. He is seen behind his Wind lance attempting to shoot down Smaug during the dragon's attack on Dale .
  • Bilbo's introduction to himself. A flashback wherein a young hobbit boy comes running up to Gandalf and plays with him. His mother Belladonna runs after him and acknowledges Gandalf as an old friend.
  • After Bilbo meets Gandalf on the front bench, he buys supper from Hobbiton while suspiciously looking around everywhere to make sure Gandalf is not around.
  • Kíli glances over to a female Elf in Rivendell and winks at her. Dwalin sees him and Kíli begins making excuses. In one of his excuses, he mistakenly calls another male Elf a female and Dwalin corrects him. The rest of the Dwarves laugh much to Kíli's embarrassment.
  • While eating, Nori and Óin complain about the song played by the Elf musicians. Bofur climbs up a platform and begins singing. The other Dwarves join in and start throwing food around. Elrond and Lindir look surprised and angry about Dwarves activities because they start throwing fruit to Elrond, Lindir and Bofur but they say nothing about it.
  • Bilbo is wandering around Rivendell during the daytime. He approaches the statue holding the shards of Narsil before a particular painting catches his eye. The painting depicts Isildur about to cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. Bilbo is particularly interested in the One Ring on Sauron's hand.
  • A conversation between Bilbo and Elrond in Rivendell. Elrond also welcomes Bilbo to stay in Rivendell if he wishes.
  • Lindir complains to Elrond about the Dwarves' behavior. They find them swimming in a large fountain.
  • Gandalf and Elrond further discuss Thorin and Company's quest. Elrond voices his concern of Thorin himself, since both his grandfather and father succumbed to madness. Bilbo and Thorin overhear this conversation.
  • At the White Council, Gandalf brings up the fact that the Ring of Power once owned by Thorin's father mysteriously vanished. Saruman dismisses this as it would be of no use since all believe the One Ring was lost long ago.
  • A new song from the goblin king and longer interrogation.

Bilbo with Dwarves

Bilbo in Rivendell with the Dwarves

  • Guillermo del Toro was originally on board to direct, but bowed out due to "ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming."
  • When it appeared Martin Freeman would not be available to play Bilbo in The Hobbit films due to scheduling conflicts with the BBC television series Sherlock , other actors such as James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire were considered. A false rumour was spread online that David Tennant was considered, but both Tennant and Jackson denied this. Tennant was actually considered for (and offered) the role of Thranduil but had to turn it down when his girlfriend discovered she was pregnant.
  • Ryan Gage was originally cast to play Drogo Baggins , father of Frodo Baggins . According to Peter Jackson , "Ryan is a great young actor who we originally cast in a small role, but we liked him so much, we promoted him to the much larger Alfrid part."
  • This is the only film in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies in which Legolas makes no appearance.
  • The scene when Bilbo first puts on the Ring is very similar to the scene in The Fellowship of the Ring where Frodo puts on the Ring in The Prancing Pony .
  • The filmmakers titled the project Little Rivers to aid in hiding the film's identity.
  • When a Giant Eagle grabs Thorin's unconscious body, his oak-log shield falls off his arm and is permanently left behind.
  • This was both the last film not distributed by Disney, Universal or Paramount and the last film distributed by Warner Bros . to gross $1 billion until the release of Aquaman in 2018.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

  • A reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home and the gold within it from the dragon Smaug.
  • Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities ... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know. — Production
  • Once upon a time, the Kingdom of Erebor in the Lonely Mountain was taken from the dwarfs by the evil dragon Smaug. One day, the young Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is unexpectedly visited by the wizard Gandalf the Grey and twelve homeless dwarfs led by their former king Thorin and decided to vanquish Smaug and recover Erebor and their treasure. Bilbo joins the company in an unexpected journey through dangerous lands of the Middle-Earth where they have to fight against Trolls, Orcs and other magic creatures. Bilbo also meets the Gollum and finds his lost magic ring. — Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • A well mannered Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, embarks upon a journey to take back a kingdom, and a very important jewel ,with twelve dwarves, and a wizard named Gandalf the Grey. Halfway throughout the journey, Bilbo embarks upon a magic golden ring, which he stole, or earned from Gollum.
  • With his days of adventure and excitement nearly forgotten, the now 111-year-old Bilbo Baggins, has finally settled down for a more conventional, comfortable--and above all--safe way of living in his beloved green Shire. Almost sixty years before the formation of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) , a knock at Bilbo's door from the wise Gandalf the Grey and an assortment of uncontrollable Dwarves led by King Thorin II Oakenshield prepared the ground for an unexpected quest to help them reclaim their homeland, Erebor. As the Lonely Mountain was taken over by the gargantuan gold-loving dragon, Smaug, this unlikely company would face challenge upon challenge that would later seal the fate of the entire Middle-earth. — Nick Riganas
  • Approaching his 111th birthday, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) begins writing down the full story of his adventure 60 years earlier for the benefit of his nephew Frodo. Long before Bilbo's involvement, the Dwarf king Thror (Jeffrey Thomas) brings an era of prosperity to his kin under the Lonely Mountain until the arrival of the dragon Smaug. Thror had a precious diamond (the heart of the mountain) and untold riches of gold that had led his city to prosperity. This drew the dragon Smaug to it, as dragons covet gold with a deep desire. Destroying the nearby town of Dale, Smaug drives the Dwarves out of their mountain and takes their hoard of gold. The dragon then sets base in the Lonely Mountain & drives all the dwarfs out. Thror's grandson Thorin (Richard Armitage) sees King Thranduil and his Wood-elves on a nearby hillside and is dismayed when they take their leave rather than aid his people, resulting in Thorin's everlasting hatred of Elves. The dwarfs were scattered all over the Middle Earth. Prince Thranduil took work wherever he could find it, mostly in the city of men. In the Shire, young Bilbo is tricked by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) into hosting a party for Thorin and his company of dwarfs: Balin (Ken Stott), Dwalin (Graham McTavish), Fili (Dean O'Gorman), Kili (Aidan Turner), Dori (Mark Hadlow), Nori (Jed Brophy), Ori (Adam Brown), Oin (John Callen), Gloin (Peter Hambleton), Bifur (William Kircher), Bofur (James Nesbitt), and Bombur (Stephen Hunter). Gandalf's aim is to recruit Bilbo as the company's "burglar" to aid them in their quest to enter the Lonely Mountain. Thorin believes that the time is right for Smaug's reign to end. He knows that others have read the signs too. So, he has assembled the company of Dwarfs along with Gandalf to recover the lost treasure of Erebor for his people. Bilbo is unwilling to accept at first but has a change of heart after they leave without him. On their journey, Balin tells Bilbo that once Erebor was lost to Smaug, Thror tried to reclaim the dwarf city of Moria, but it had already been taken over by a legion of Orcs. The Orcs were led by the vilest of Orc, Azog the defiler (Manu Bennett). Azog killed Thror & had sworn to kill Thorin, making Orcs the sworn enemy of dwarfs for all eternity. Thorin cuts offs Azog arm in the same battle & rallies his troops to a famous victory over the Orcs. Traveling onward, the company is captured by three trolls. Bilbo stalls the trolls from eating them until dawn, when Gandalf exposes the trolls to sunlight, which turns them to stone. They search the trolls' cave and find treasure and Elven blades. Thorin and Gandalf each take an Elf-made blade-Orcrist and Glamdring, respectively-with the latter finding an Elven short sword, which he gives to Bilbo. The company encounters the wizard Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy) (Radagast & Gandalf are 2 of the 5 wizards in Middle earth, led by Saruman the white), who tells them of an encounter at Dol Guldur with a Necromancer that has been corrupting Greenwood with dark magic. A Necromancer is an evil spirit with powers to interact with the underworld. The Necromancer had attacked Radagast at Dol Guldur, but Radagast escaped. While escaping, he picks a strange blade from Dol Guldur that is not from the land of the living. The company is then chased by orcs on Wargs. Radagast covers the company's escape as Gandalf leads the company through a stone passage to Rivendell. There the company is rescued by Elves who chase the Orgs away. Thorin is dead against asking for any help from Elves, but Gandalf convinces him. There, Elf Lord Elrond (Hugo Weaving) discloses a hidden indication of a secret door on the company's map of the Lonely Mountain, which will be visible only on Durin's Day, which is fast approaching. Gandalf later tells the White Council-consisting of Elrond, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Saruman the White (Christopher Lee) about his involvement with the Dwarves. He presents a Morgul-blade Radagast obtained from Dol Guldur as a sign that the Necromancer is linked to the Witch-king of Angmar and may attempt to use Smaug for his evil purposes. Saruman is skeptical, not believing the Necromancer to be a true threat. Galadriel knows that Angmar used to serve the evil lord Sauron. Sauron & his armies were defeated 400 years ago & there has been peace in middle earth. She believes that the riddle of the Necromancer must be resolved as it is hiding an evil that has not yet revealed itself. Galadriel thinks that the council should assemble an army to counter the impending threat, but Gandalf re-iterates his faith in the deeds of everyday ordinary folk to keep evil at bay. The leader of the Orc pack returns to his base & it is revealed that Azog is still alive & is baying for Thorin's blood. Without Gandalf, the company journeys into the Misty Mountains, where they find themselves amid a colossal battle between stone giants. They take refuge in a cave and are captured by Goblins, who take them to their leader, the Great Goblin (Barry Humphries). Bilbo becomes separated from the dwarfs and falls into a cave where he encounters Gollum (Andy Serkis), who accidentally drops a golden ring while killing a stray goblin to eat. Pocketing the ring, Bilbo finds himself confronted by Gollum. They play a riddle game, wagering that Bilbo will be shown the way out if he wins or eaten by Gollum if he loses. Bilbo eventually wins by asking Gollum what he has in his pocket. Noticing his ring is lost, Gollum suspects that Bilbo possesses it and attacks the hobbit. Bilbo discovers that the ring grants him invisibility and evades a furious Gollum. Bilbo finds his way out into the sunlight where the Gollum can't follow. Gollum curses Baggins & vows to hate all Baggins forever. Meanwhile, the Great Goblin reveals to the dwarfs that Azog, an Orc war-chief who beheaded Thror and lost his forearm to Thorin in battle outside the Dwarven kingdom of Moria, has placed a bounty on Thorin's head. Gandalf arrives and leads the dwarfs in an escape, killing the Great Goblin. Bilbo, sparing the pursuing Gollum, exits the mountain and rejoins the company, keeping secret his newly obtained ring. The company is ambushed by Azog and his hunting party and takes refuge in trees. Thorin charges Azog but is knocked to the ground. Bilbo saves Thorin from the orcs just as the company is rescued by eagles, who fly them to the safety of the Carrock. In the distance, the company sees the Lonely Mountain, where the sleeping Smaug is awakened by the knocking sound of a thrush.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review

the hobbit an unexpected journey kurdish

Director: Peter Jackson Cast: Ian McKellen Martin Freeman Richard Armitage Hugo Weaving Rated: PG-13

The return of the franchise was like re-visiting an old friend.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is a prequel story to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy that came out a few years ago, all based on the books written by J.R.R. Tolkien. In this film, the story surrounds Bilbo Baggins (Freeman), the uncle of the LOTR protagonist Frodo, who gets a visit from the wizard Gandalf the Grey (McKellen). Gandalf informs Bilbo about an adventure he and a group of dwarves are going to attempt and asks him to be a member of the company.

Bilbo is at first reluctant to join in however the call of adventure brings him out of there and he joins with the dwarves and Gandalf. The leader of the group is Thorin (Armitage), a dwarf king who is trying to retake his home and reclaim his birth right. Through the adventure, Bilbo begins to earn more trust from the group.

Getting out some of the problems of the film first, there could have been a few things cut. The film is nearly three hours long, yet the length is never really felt too much, instead there are just a few scenes (for example those with the Brown Wizard) that feel a bit out of place and unnecessary. These could have been put into an extended addition for those who wanted to connect more of the dots, but for a theatrical version they could have been pulled.

These scenes aside though, the film is really good and makes for a nice launching point into a new trilogy. Once the film gets going into the adventure it becomes quite enjoyable. The best part of the film though is not just the adventurous fun fantasy aspect, but the story of Bilbo Baggins himself.

Bilbo has a really good character arc which shows him going from a bit of a reluctant, out of place member of the group to a legitimate partner and friend of the dwarves. He really makes for a great protagonist and helps the flow a lot. The number one best part of the film by far is the scene involving Gollum and Bilbo; it is very well put together and actually is more exciting than many of the battle scenes.

The characters are well done here. As previously stated Bilbo makes for a great protagonist and is well performed by Martin Freeman. It was also great to see Ian McKellen return as Gandalf too, having played the part before he knows the ins and outs of the role. The leader of the dwarves, Thorin, was also very good. The strong, brave and at times stubborn leader was someone to root for, and he was played with a lot of believability by Richard Armitage.

The rest of the dwarves could have used a little more fleshing out though. It was as if I barely got to know all of them and only really got attached to a few of them. I am ready to let this slide a bit more though as, one, this was the first movie of a trilogy where they can be better known, and two, because this was more Bilbo’s story of how he earns the trust of Thorin.

As expected, the work on the set design and costumes are very well done and it’s easy to tell that there was a lot of work put into it. Peter Jackson does what he did before and really captures both fantasy and real landscapes to create a visually great world. The cg at times did look a bit lacking though. The looks of some of the villains, like the dragon Smaug or the white orc seemed to be a bit artificial looking compared to the likes of the Uruk-hai which looked very real in the “Lord of the Rings.”

Overall, “The Hobbit” isn’t an absolute masterpiece. There are some flaws in things here and there and may not be as good as the films from the previous trilogy. That being said, it’s still fun to watch, the length isn’t ever to strongly felt and the main characters, especially Bilbo make for very good protagonists. This one comes in at a low 4 out of 5.

Every Missing Location From the 'Lord of the Rings' Movies

Wouldn't it have been great to see Mirrormere in 'Fellowship of the Ring?'

From 2001 to 2003, Sir Peter Jackson released his Lord of the Rings trilogy of films based on the acclaimed work by J. R. R. Tolkien . The movies were massive critical and financial successes, walking away with seventeen Academy Awards and helping to change the public perspective on fantasy films. To this day, the Middle-earth trilogy maintains a powerful grip on popular culture thanks to its unique aesthetic, phenomenal cast, and gorgeous landscape shots of New Zealand.

When adapting a work as rich and detailed as Tolkien's, it's natural that not every location will survive the switch between mediums. Though this is understandable, some of these places offered more detailed looks at Middle Earth or were the location for important conversations and events that furthered the plot. These are every major book location missing from the Lord of the Rings movies , landmarks and dwellings that could've further enriched Jackson's take on Middle-earth.

9 Wellinghall

Should've appeared in 'the lord of the rings: the two towers' (2002).

After escaping their Uruk Hai captors, the hobbits Meriadoc Brandybuck ( Dominic Monaghan ) and Peregrin Took ( Billy Boyd ) flee into the ancient Fangorn Forest. Here, they meet Treebeard ( John Rhys Davies ), the oldest of the ancient tree shepherds known as Ents . They inform Treebeard of the actions of the fallen wizard, Saruman ( Sir Christopher Lee ), which leads to the Last March of the Ents as they go to war against the orcs of Isengard.

Before calling the Entmoot in the book, Treebeard brings Merry and Pippin to his home of Wellinghall, a beautiful creation made from trees forming a roofless hall in a stone cave, with a stream of water creating a curtain between the outside and inside. There, Treebeard gives the hobbits Ent-draught to drink, causing them to grow and become the tallest hobbits ever recorded. Wellinghall's omission is understandable to keep the pacing dire , and the hobbits drink the Ent-draught in the extended edition, but it still offered an interesting look at the lives of the Ents by showing what one of their houses looks like.

8 The Eyrie of the Eagles

Should've appeared in 'the hobbit: an unexpected journey' (2012).

During their journey to the Lonely Mountain, Bilbo Baggins ( Martin Freeman ), Gandalf the Grey ( Sir Ian McKellen ), and thirteen dwarves are chased up pine trees by worgs and orcs led by Azog the Defiler ( Manu Bennett ). Though the company tries to fight back, they are eventually forced off the cliffside. Fortunately, they are rescued by giant eagles, who take them to the other side of the Misty Mountains.

While The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ends with the eagles depositing the heroes, in the book, they are taken to their eyrie high on the mountaintops, where they provide the company with food while Gandalf negotiates with their leader for further transportation. Since the films removed the eagle's ability to speak, it's understandable why this location was cut . However, the lack of speech from the eagles is a contributing factor to their perceived status as plot holes in the films since they cannot explain their reasons for only helping part of the way.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

7 drúadan forest, should've appeared in 'the lord of the rings: the return of the king' (2003).

As the forces of Mordor prepare to attack Minas Tirith, the capital city of Gondor, Pippin lights a signal fire that leads to the lightning of a series of beacons. The fires eventually reach the kingdom of Rohan, Gondor's ally, which had recently survived an invasion from Saruman. Honoring the alliance, King Théoden ( Bernard Hill ) musters his riders and travels south to save the city.

To avoid being spotted by the orcs in the book, Théoden and his riders travel through Drúadan Forest, a stretch of wildwood inhabited by tribesmen known as the Drúedain. Théoden meets with their chief, Ghân-buri-Ghân, who shows the Rohirrim a safe path in exchange for their promise to respect the boundaries of the woods and aid them in driving away the orcs. While not a major loss, the absence of the Drúedain is unfortunate because it denies audiences the chance to see another faction of men and see the politics of Middle Earth in action.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

6 the old forest, should've appeared in 'the lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring' (2001).

During the Second Age, a great forest stretched across Middle Earth, where the Elves taught the trees how to wake up and talk to one another. Unfortunately, it got destroyed during the wars with Sauron ( Alan Howard ) and was felled by human expansion, but a small section survived near the borders of the Shire. It is called the Old Forest by the hobbits, who built a barrier hedge to keep the moving trees from entering their lands.

Since Fangorn also fulfills the role of an ancient forest brimming with magic, it's understandable why Jackson removed this section , even if it is disappointing. It offers Frodo ( Elijah Wood ), Sam ( Sean Astin ), Merry and Pippin their first taste of adventure and the dangers of the world outside the Shire and helps to highlight how inexperienced the heroes are. At the least, the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers includes a scene where Merry and Pippin run into a sentient tree that nearly kills them, which references Old Man Willow, an evil willow tree from the Old Forest.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

5 farmer maggot's house.

Perhaps the most wasted character in the Lord of the Rings movies is Farmer Maggot ( Cameron Rhodes ), a hobbit farmer who wishes to tend to his land in peace. In the movies, he is shown chasing after Merry and Pippin when they steal his crops, and then later points a Nazgul towards Hobbiton when it asks about "Baggins." Meanwhile, the book paints Maggot as perhaps one of the bravest individuals in the books, and his home offers the hobbits a moment of rest before the next leg of the journey.

Over dinner, Maggot tells Frodo, Sam, and Pippin about his encounter with a black rider, who offered him gold for information about Frodo; rather than accept, Maggot refused him and threw him out of his land. He then personally escorts the younger hobbits to Buckleberry Ferry so they can meet up with Merry in Buckland, despite how dangerous the roads are. Maggot's homestead offered a chance to see the hospitality among hobbits and remind Frodo of the average, everyday people of Middle Earth that he would be saving by taking the One Ring to Mordor.

While most might assume hobbits only live in the Shire, there is a small, independent community called Buckland found on the east side of the Brandywine River and bordered by the Old Forest. Inhabited mainly by the Brandybuck family, the community is less isolated than the Shirefolk and always ready for a fight. Frodo originally grew up in Buckland until his parents died in a boating accident, and he moved to Hobbiton to live with his uncle, Bilbo.

Buckland's absence in the films streamlines Frodo's departure from the Shire . In the books, rather than just leave home with his supplies and a walking stick, Frodo covers his tracks by selling his house at Bag End and moving to Crickhollow, allowing him to slip away into the Old Forest unseen. Had Buckland been included in the movies, it would have been a fun chance to show the differences between the two communities of hobbits and give some more characterization to Merry.

3 Mirrormere

During the journey to Mordor, the fellowship is forced to pass through the Mines of Moria, leading to a showdown with a demonic Balrog and Gandalf's death. Shortly after escaping the mines, Gimli (John Rhys Davies) realized that they were close to Mirromere, a dark and deep lake shaped like a spearhead. Gimli takes Frodo and Sam with him to look upon the lake, where they see the crown of King Durin.

Including Mirromere might have killed some of the dramatic tension following Gandalf's death, but it is one of the most beautiful moments for Gimli and gives some insight into dwarven culture . Gimli sings The Song of Durin , a somber ballad about the history of the first dwarf king, Durin, and how the dwarves wait for his return. Without this scene or other examples of his love of the natural world, the movie version of Gimli is left to be little more than comic relief.

2 Tom Bombadil's House

One of the most powerful beings in middle earth.

In the book, after nearly dying to Old Man Willow, the hobbits are rescued by Tom Bombadil, a mysterious little man who loves to sing and dance. He invites them back to his home and introduces them to his wife, Goldberry. Despite his unassuming appearance, Tom is one of the most powerful characters in The Lord of the Rings and is completely immune to the tempting power of the One Ring itself.

Tom Bombadil is consistently cut from Lord of the Rings adaptations because of how little he moves the plot forward , but he remains one of Middle Earth's most enigmatic and fascinating characters. He is an example of how not everything needs to be explained in a story and that there are forces at play who do not care for power or control and rather wish to live a life free of evil. Interestingly, Tolkien also used Tom to show the dangers of such a philosophy, since if Tom were to be given the One Ring for safekeeping, he would likely forget about it or just not understand the importance of it, thus dooming the world.

1 The Barrow-Downs

After leaving Tom Bombadil's house, the hobbits cross the Barrow Downs, which had long been the burial place for the men of the north. Following wars with the Witch King of Angmar ( Lawrence Makoare and Andy Serkis ) that destroyed the kingdom of Arnor, evil spirits called Barrow Wights inhabited the region. One of these wights lures the hobbits into its tomb and nearly kills them.

The Barrow-Downs are one of the most atmospheric and suspenseful moments in the trilogy . The imagery of Sam, Merry, and Pippin sleeping with a blade across their throats while a pale hand reaches for it is genuinely terrifying, but it offers Frodo his first chance to be heroic when he saves their lives. The hobbits also obtain enchanted swords from the barrows built specifically to kill the Nazgul, which Merry uses to stab the Witch King in the leg in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King , setting him up for Éowyn ( Miranda Otto ) to finish.

Indiana Jones Meets Tintin in Pitch Perfect Mashup Fanart

Walking dead's creator teased carl's death 7 years early (but no-one believed him), 10 funniest far side comics starring god.

  • Artist Adam Murphy has shared a charming fusion of The Hobbit and Peanuts.
  • Bilbo Baggins slips into Charlie Brown's mannerisms incredibly easily, since the two diminutive, nervous heroes have a lot in common.
  • As children's media that have captured entire generations of fans of all ages, Peanuts and The Hobbit have more in common than you'd think.

In this adorable art from Adam Murphy, The Hobbit 's Bilbo Baggins is recreated in the iconic art style of Charles Schulz's Peanuts . J. R. R. Tolkien's beloved fantasy novel sees the titular hobbit Bilbo hired as a burglar by a group of dwarves who intend to reclaim their home from the dragon Smaug. But while it's hard to imagine Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Pig-Pen tangling with trolls and charting the Misty Mountains, the story's pastoral setting has a lot in common with Peanuts ' idyllic American childhood .

Shared to Instagram by creator Adam Murphy , a series of illustrations depict events from the Hobbit in a tribute to Charles Schulz's art style , including Bilbo turning down Gandalf's offer of adventure and having his house swamped by dwarves.

Recently, Murphy has shared a number of pieces mimicking iconic art styles and uniting unlikely characters, from Calvin and Hobbes meeting the Rocketeer to Indiana Jones working alongside Marvel's Wolverine and Belgian comic hero Tintin.

In an unexpected yet welcomed mashup, a work of fanart by Adam Murphy pairs together Tintin and Indiana Jones for a pitch perfect crossover.

A Thief Stole Something Precious After The Hobbit Movies Wrapped

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

In J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 adventure novel "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again," Bilbo Baggins and his merry band of stern dwarf friends are apprehended by a marauding group of wicked goblins and dragged into their dank underground lair. The lead dwarf, Thorin Oakenshield, is targeted as a particular threat by the Goblin King as he is carrying a unique sword called Orcrist, the Goblin-Cleaver. Orcrist, according to Tolkien's lore, was forged millennia ago by expert elf swordsmiths, and passed down through generations. It is a magic sword that glows when orcs are nearby, warning its wielder of danger. Later in "The Hobbit," Thorin would lose Orcrist when he was captured by the Wood-elves of Mirkwood — though it was eventually returned to him.

In Peter Jackson's three "Hobbit" film adaptations — "An Unexpected Journey" (2012) , "The Desolation of Smaug" (2013), and "The Battle of the Five Armies" (2014) — Thorin was played by Richard Armitage, and the Orcrist sword was constructed by Wētā Workshop, the SFX house that provided most of the visuals and props for Jackson's six extant "Lord of the Rings" movies. It was important that Orcrist look good, as fans of "Lord of the Rings" have a keen eye for weapons, and can likely identify which swords, axes, bows, and scabbards are held by each character. (Antiwar sentiment is a large theme of Tolkien's "The Hobbit," so there is certainly an irony in the weapon fetish that springs from its fandom.)

When Jackson completed filming "Battle," he thanked Armitage for his hard work by gifting him the prop Orcrist sword. Armitage packed it away in a storage locker, hoping to keep it safe. Imagine his surprise then, when he learned that his sword was put up for sale on an online auction. Armitage revealed details of the theft in the latest issue of Total Film Magazine .

Orcrist was burgled from Richard Armitage's lair

Armitage didn't even know his sword had been stolen until Peter Jackson brought it to his attention. He'd been equally surprised to have Orcrist join his possessions in the first place. When asked about his most memorable end-of-shoot gift from any production, the actor replied:

"Orcrist, the sword from 'The Hobbit.' I just did not expect to be gifted the original sword from the shoot. Actually, I had it in a lock-up and it got stolen, and someone was trying to sell it. Peter pulled me aside and said, 'Are you hard up for money?' I was like, 'What are you talking about?' He said, 'Your sword's for sale online.' So I had to go through this whole thing of getting the police involved, but we got the sword back. Now it's on a shelf in a very prominent place."

Neither the circumstances of the theft, nor the identity of the thief, were given. The important thing is that Armitage got his sword back.

Tolkien fans will be quick to note the poetry of the theft. In "The Hobbit," Orcrist was plundered by Thorin from a trolls' lair with a pile of other knick-knacks — a location reminiscent of a modern, disheveled storage locker. It's also worth noting that Bilbo Baggins was hired by Thorin to be a burglar, and that theft and salvage are common themes of Tolkien's novel.

Sadly, actor Martin Freeman, who played Bilbo , was not revealed to be the thief. That would have been a little too perfect.

Why Smaug Is The Only Dragon In LOTR & The Hobbit (What Happened To The Others?)

  • Smaug was the only great dragon alive in the Third Age, with others like Ancalagon and Glaurung in previous ages.
  • Dragons in Middle Earth likely dissipated over time due to the absence of their creator, Morgoth.
  • Smaug's history before Erebor is unknown, but it's possible he survived by choosing his targets wisely while other dragons were killed.

Smaug poses a menacing threat in The Hobbit , raising the question of why he's the only dragon to appear in the Lord of the Rings saga. In the story of The Hobbit , Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and their crew of dwarves set out for the Lonely Mountain to reclaim the dwarven kingdom of Erebor. Prior to the story's events, the once-magnificent city under the mountain was invaded by the fire drake Smaug, who was drawn to the vast wealth accumulated by the dwarves . In the Lord of the Rings chronology , The Hobbit occurs roughly 60 years before The Fellowship of the Ring .

One dragon single-handedly ruining an entire kingdom is a power that surely would've factored into the War of the Ring. Unlike the famous dragons in HBO's Game of Thrones series, dragons in J.R.R. Tolkien's world are gigantic, sentient, and talk . The films in the The Hobbit trilogy aren't the best Lord of the Rings movies , but Smaug is a compelling villain with a fascinating performance from Benedict Cumberbatch. His human-like qualities differentiate him from the other antagonists in the series, even offering more complexity than Sauron in the films.

How The Witch-king Breaks Gandalf's Staff In The Lord Of The Rings

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King sees the Witch-king break Gandalf's staff, which has led to a lot of controversy - and here's why.

Many Dragons Existed During The Lord Of The Rings' Past Ages

Dragons were created by morgoth and used for war in the first age.

Seeing as The Lord of the Rings is a quintessential fantasy story, it's strange that dragons don't play a more significant role. While they're not prominent in the main trilogy, they're undoubtedly prevalent in the histories of Middle Earth and are examined in Tolkien's writing. Dragons existed in all ages of Middle-Earth, initially created by Morgoth in the First Age to serve in his forces. In The Silmarillion , which depicts the War of the Jewels, Morgoth utilized the first dragon, Glaurung, to wage war against the Elves.

Smaug is one of the only dragons alive in the Third Age, but he wasn't the most powerful of his species. Smaug is considered one of the "great dragons," while Ancalagon the Black was known as the greatest and most powerful in history. Ancalagon also played a significant role in a major event, the War of Wrath, which concluded the First Age. By the Second Age, as depicted in The Rings of Power TV show , dragons were less prevalent in war and instead focused their attention on capturing treasure, becoming a terror to Dwarves and Men.

Why Dragons Became Less Common In Middle-earth

The power of dragons dissipated over time after morgoth's downfall.

After the First Age, dragons generally ceased to be used as forces in war and went off instead to pursue their own desires for wealth. It's not that they couldn't be used for war. One of the reasons that Gandalf took part in the Quest of the Lonely Mountain was that he wanted to avoid Smaug joining forces with Sauron upon the Dark Lord's return. Dragons are immensely powerful, so very few evil beings, like Morgoth and Sauron, could possibly subjugate them . Without the leadership of such characters and without Morgoth creating new great dragons, they naturally dissipated.

Dragons could reproduce, and many lesser dragons were made, many of whom were likely alive during the War of the Ring, even after Smaug's death. Why Sauron never sought them out is unclear, but it could be because they were sentient and would have to be bargained with. Most of the great dragons were killed in battles, with Smaug considered the last of the great dragons by the Third Age. Ultimately, dragons still existed in the Third Age but were spread too thin and suffered from disorganization.

Why Sauron Didn't Really Die In Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King's Ending

Sauron was finally defeated at the conclusion of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, but Middle-Earth's evil conqueror wasn't actually killed.

How Smaug Survived (& Are Any Other Dragons Still Alive?)

Smaug wasn't the only dragon left alive, but he was the only one that mattered.

Smaug's history before his attack on the Lonely Mountain isn't recorded, including his birth origin or age, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly how he lasted as long as he did. He wasn't the only great dragon during the Third Age , as Scatha the Worm was a threat to the Dwarves roughly 700 years prior to Smaug's dominion over Erebor. Scatha was slain by a man named Fram, Lord of the Éothéod, in physical combat. The assumption can be made that this was the case for other lesser dragons, with them being killed in their exploits by Men or Dwarves.

Smaug's survival until the near end of the Third Age could be due to passivity before his assault on Erebor , or it could be that he was skilled enough in picking his targets to avoid death. There may be other dragons alive during The Lord of the Rings , but they lack the power of those that came before. In Fellowship , Gandalf states: "It has been said that dragon-fire could melt and consume the Rings of Power, but there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough."
