Key West Sunset Cruises Overview

Sunset Cruises

A Key West sunset cruise is a vacation must-do that adds an unforgettable experience to any Key West visit. Choose a graceful sailing schooner, a sleek modern catamaran, or a roomy dinner cruise liner with live music and all the trimmings – this curated selection of the best Key West sunset cruises offers good times set against one of nature’s grandest spectacles.

Depart the harbor in the late afternoon to enjoy an evening on the water, or combine dolphin watching, snorkeling, or a glass-bottom boat tour with sunset and the perfect end to another day in paradise. Key West sunsets are famous for highlighting nature’s grandeur as the sun sinks below the broad ocean horizon and brings on dramatic color changes of a range and intensity not seen on land. The unobstructed fetch of the light, atmospheric moisture, and other refractory factors combine to produce awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Add a chilled beverage and a loved one to share the occasion and the result is sublime. Click on a selection below to learn more about the most popular Key West Sunset Cruises.

Frequently Asked Questions

The answers provided below are based on answers previously given to customers' questions.

Q: What type of boats are used for Key West Sunset Cruises?

A: The diversity of available sunset cruise vessels is one of the things that make Key West Sunset Cruises so special. Guests who enjoy sailing can choose a 65-foot skipjack schooner with authentic lines that replicate the sailboats used by 19th century Florida Keys fishermen and wreckers. Or a modern sailing catamaran with the stability, speed, and generous deck space these craft are known for. Power catamarans are fast and smooth, perfect watersports or dolphin-watching platforms. And of course, enjoying a buffet dinner and cocktails aboard a 65-foot custom party catamaran should be on everyone’s bucket list. For a wedding, anniversary, or other special occasion, try a private charter to have a sail or power yacht all to yourself.

All the boats used for these popular Key West Sunset Cruises are top-of-the-line designs built for safety, comfort, and fun on the waters around Key West. The United States Coast Guard regularly inspects every Key West Sunset Cruise boat, and all required safety equipment is aboard and properly updated at all times. This is luxury sunset cruising at its best, with expert local captains and crew members, high-tech navigation gear, and the latest in quiet, efficient, low-emission engines. Plus, there are those added touches to enjoy like room for cocktail and wine service, deck space for top local musicians to perform, and even a bit of space to dance on some cruises.

Q: What makes a Key West Sunset Cruise so special?

A: Something about sunset in a tropical island location inspires people to a greater appreciation for what is normally a simple daily event. The famous and elusive Waikiki sunset “green flash” draws hundreds of camera-toting tourists to the Kalakaua Avenue beach walk each evening. Maui has Mt. Haleakala, the “House of the Sun” with sunsets worth an hour drive up the mountain. Beach bar decks in Phuket Thailand get packed as early evening comes on. And sunset in Key West is definitely a big deal whether seen from land or water.

Mallory Square and the nearby anchorage waters have been a hub of activity in Key West for over two hundred years, and when hippies arrived in town during the late 1960’s, they discovered that Mallory Pier offered a perfect wide-open view to the west. The custom of celebrating the amazingly colorful ocean sunsets took hold, and now Mallory Square and the Key West sunsets are both world famous.

Visitors have been boarding boat tours out of the harbor near today’s Mallory Square since the mid-19th century. With quiet, unobstructed on-deck views, the blazing orange, red, and purple clouds along the horizon and the awesome disc of the sun visible as it slides out of sight captured attention very early on. Now, modern vessels are able to provide visitors with a nice range of specialized sunset-watching cruises to suit any taste, and the best way to find out why Key West Sunset Cruises are so special is to come aboard and try one (or more).

Q: Which Key West Sunset Cruise is best for me?

A: The only easy choice among the many popular Key West Sunset Cruises is deciding to go on one. After that, the variety of attractive options may easily lead a visitor to decide that the only solution is to enjoy more than one sunset on the water! But if a choice of just one (or two) must be made, the best strategy is to consider what you like best and who is joining you for what could easily be the highlight of any Key West visit.

Naturally, the idea of gliding smoothly over turquoise water under sail while toasting a perfect day with a cold beer, glass of wine, or cocktail is very tempting. A Sunset Sip & Sail or Premium Sunset Sail with Hors D’oeuvres and Full Bar will provide a perfect happy hour start for a couple planning an evening on the town.

For an active family, or anyone who enjoys the water, taking an afternoon snorkeling trip that winds down with a beautiful sunset (and beverages) offers the best of both worlds. A Key West Sunset Snorkel Sail is just the ticket. Nature lovers should try a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour Sunset Combo or take the Dolphin Watch Sunset Snorkel Cruise.

Looking to party with some reggae or just enjoy live music and a cocktail hour at sunset? Take a look at Rum n’ Reggae or the Sunset Party Cruise. The award-winning Key West Wind & Wine Sunset Sail is notable for its pairing of fine wines and craft beers with gourmet appetizers. Special occasions (and every Key West sunset is special) call for a Sunset Champagne Cruise or Dinner Cruise. And for the ultimate in luxury, gather family and friends or just one significant other on a 65-foot schooner and sail away on a Key West Wind & Wine Private Charter.

Q: What kind of wine is served on the Key West Wind & Wine Sunset Sail?

A: Looking for a sunset cruise with a focus on fine wine to go with the fine view? The Key West Wind & Wine Sunset Sail is a legend with locals and visitors alike. This elegant and awesome sunset cruise has pulled down top ratings on Trip Advisor for several consecutive years in addition to earning a Top Sunset Cruise designation (one of the top 2 in North America) from Coastal Living Magazine. The Wind & Wine is a cruise that stands above the rest because it is one of very few sailing excursions in the United States that offers a selection of “real” fine wines from America and around the world.

A small group will gather on deck beneath the billowing sails to enjoy an intimate atmosphere, tropical music, and the incredible Key West sunset along with 8 different wines from around the world and 5 types of domestic and imported beer. There are usually 4 red and 3 white wines plus a champagnoise open for the tasting. The charcuterie and cheese board goes far beyond simple sailors’ rations to deliver the perfect wine pairings with Dill Havarti, Smoked Gouda, fresh Mozzarella, and Brie cheeses. Caprese skewers, summer sausage, honey-drizzled green apple slices, fruit, water crackers and more make for the ultimate water-borne wine tasting session.

Q: Skipjack schooner or catamaran – which one is best for a sunset cruise?

A: Sailing schooners and sailing or powered catamarans are the two most popular Key West sunset cruise vessels. In fact, these are the most commonly used craft for all types of Key West water tours from Backcountry snorkeling and kayak tours to glass-bottom boat rides. The reason for this is simple – skipjack-style schooners and catamarans are both shallow-draft boats that are well-suited to navigating the sandbar- and reef-filled waters around Key West.

Skipjack schooners were originally designed for harvesting oysters in shallow Chesapeake Bay. Adopted for use by 19th-century Florida Keys wreckers, sailors who would race out to salvage cargo from ill-fated ships caught on the reefs around the Keys, skipjacks became very common in local waters as general working and fishing boats. Modern catamarans are adaptations of ancient Polynesian boat designs used by sea-going peoples who lived on tropical islands ringed by shallow coral reefs and lagoons. The ability to skim through the shallows and land directly on the beach was critical. Known for their stability and versatility, today’s catamarans are the fastest and shallowest-running boats on the water.

Both types of vessel provide a safe, comfortable ride and can take guests to the best places to sightsee and play in Key West waters. Do you enjoy a touch of history and the romance of a tall ship under sail? Then a schooner would be a good choice. These classic ships have been sailing out of Key West for over 200 years, and guests who come aboard a Key West schooner today are in for an award-winning luxury sunset cruise.

Catamarans also move very gracefully under sail, but a key difference is that the cat’s deck remains level at all times because the vessel does not heel (lean over under the wind power) like a single-hull sailboat. A catamaran can also offer more wide-open deck space between the two hulls. This allows for seating at tables, live music and dancing, and ease of movement around deck for enjoying the view and taking pictures. The broad, flat deck also makes the catamaran a great play boat for an afternoon of watersports and sunbathing.

Schooners and catamarans are both a lot of fun on the water, so the choice between them is mainly about a guest’s personal preference. Planned activities for the sailing trip as well as any physical limitations and the need for ease of movement should also be considered. Of course, many Key West visitors end up going out on both types of vessel to enjoy not only beautiful sunset cruises but the many other opportunities for fun on and in the water that have made Key West a world-famous tropical vacation destination.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.

Why Choose Us

Sebago’s experienced captains navigate to the best spots on the water for viewing our famous Key West sunsets.

We intentionally limit the number of guests on each cruise to provide a more intimate setting. More room on the deck means better views and the ability to interact with the captain and crew.

As our boats enter open Key West waters, each captain unfurls the sails so guests can experience authentic sailing while enjoying the sunset views.

Along with the spectacular views on this tour, you also get an all-inclusive gourmet dinner with bottomless drinks to go with it!

For each tour, our professional crew provides a thorough briefing for how to move around catamaran decks safely. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or on a boat for the first time, we've got you covered.

Sunsets Key West Style

In line with the long history of sunset watching in Key West, Sebago Watersports regularly participates in the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration, a longstanding tradition that is now an integral part of everyday life for locals.

As a past meeting place for pirates, merchants, and revelers, Mallory Square now hosts nightly jugglers, musicians, artists, tourists, food vendors, and even psychics — all intent on raising sunset watching to an art form. Experience Key West’s breathtaking sunsets for yourself with Sebago Watersports’ sunset sail tours.

Special Sunset

You may still be asking yourself, the sun sets everywhere, what makes a Key West sunset so special? That question is answered by experiencing it for yourself. The best place to watch the sunset in Key West is on the deck of a Sebago ship, drink in hand. Sebago takes part in this nightly sunset tradition, sailing past Mallory Square where our guests wave to the crowd gathered on the docks and watch the jugglers, musicians and other performers. Then we head for open water and sail into the sunset. As the orange sun sinks lower, casting its reflection on the turquoise sea, Sebago’s experienced captains carefully maneuver their ship to provide their guests with a magnificent view of the sunset. No need to stand on tiptoe to catch a glimpse over the crowds!

Sebago offers a variety of sunset tours on catamarans, historic schooners and even combo dolphin watch tours. There is sure to be one tailored to your interests and schedule. Book a Sebago Key West Sunset Tour and join in the celebration!

Hello! Welcome to the Marathon Mermaid! Having a Marathon Florida Boat Tour company has been a dream of John and Angela’s for years, and now is finally a reality! John, born and raised in Marathon, and Angela, a “transplant” from California, met in 2015, when Angela was a scuba instructor at the marina where John owned his rental boat business. Angela had dreamed of owning her own charter boat for years since she became a professional scuba diver and John wanted to be the person to make that dream come true with his skills and knowledge of boats. Skip forward a few years and they started to work on this dream, and that is where the “Marathon Mermaid” was born. Together, John and Angela put both of their ideas together to create this beautiful and unique vessel for some of the best Florida Keys boat tours and cruises in the area.

For a couple in their early 30's who have never been on/driven a jet ski before this tour was a lot of fun! Our tour guide, Niko was very friendly and did a very good job making us feel comfortable throughout the tour. We stopped several times to view the different hotspots as Niko talked about their history. Thank goodness for these breaks as the waves can get a little intense at times and being the 2nd rider my arms got sore from hanging on tight. I'm very happy we chose to do this tour. The views of the clear turquoise waters and taking a short dip at the sandbar were my favorite part.

We had booked an All-day adventure but weather in the AM did not cooperate so we did the sunset snorkel dolphin expo wiener and it was AMAZING! Small group due to iffy weather but sun came out (and down for a gorgeous sunset!). Saw dolphin family after only a short while and they came very close to boat. Water a bit choppy for snorkel but great location and saw a huge sea turtle, stingray, and tropical fish. Crew was attentive and helpful. Would highly recommend to families or adults flying solo!

The Sunset Dinner Cruise is everything you can ask for. We went to celebrate my Brother-in-Laws birthday and it was amazing. Captain Clay was fun and made sure everyone was comfy. Po was super helpful with bringing us drinks and making sure the Bday cake came out at the perfect time. The bar was great and the two bartenders Alex and Steve were on a mission to make sure everyone got there fill. They kept the drink rolling and they are FAST!!!! Make sure you upgrade for the full bar its $20 but its beyond worth it!!!! The food was pretty good as well especially the Chicken, plantains and the grouper!!! I WOULD DEFINITELY DO IT AGAIN!!!! Thank you to the whole crew for making my bro bday one to remember!!!!!

Had an amazing time! The crew did a wonderful job! Was recommended the sunset tour over the earlier one and definitely enjoyed it. Saw lots of dolphins and crew found us a great location to snorkel. Thought we would not have enough time for snorkeling but had over an hour in the water. Beautiful relaxing sunset trip back to the dock with good drinks. JC the bartender was a tremendous joy after a day of sun and snorkeling!

We had never done a sunset dinner cruise before but we really enjoyed this. Sunset was beautiful, food was very good and fresh, and entertainment was awesome! We enjoyed the music so much! The bartenders & crew were very friendly!

We had an excellent time on the dolphin watch and snorkel! The crew (CJ and Jade) were very accommodating and Captain Nick was able to find a few different pods of dolphins! We were able to snorkel at Sambo key, since the weather was calm and we saw a lot of different fish!! It was nice to be in a boat that wasn’t overly crowded and more personable.

The jet ski tour was awesome! Connor was our tour guide. He was super knowledgeable, which put me at ease for someone who had never been jet skiing before. My favorite part was hanging out on the sandbar.

Sunset Tour

sunset boat tour florida keys

A sunset in the FL Keys is a magical experience to behold. There are few places on the east coast where one can see the sun set into the water, and this is one of them. Motor or sail, ocean side or Gulf. We depart the marina 2 hours prior to sunset. Bring your own sunset drinks and snacks. We might even take a quick dip–whatever we want. You’re in the Keys!

Sunset on the Water

This is magic hour, when the seas flatten out, the sun is not too strong, and everything has a brilliant glow. This is the same as our eco tour, but during sunset. The wind dictates Gulf or ocean side. You can combine it with a dip. Or, you might instead combine it with a sip. You are free to bring whatever you like food and beverage wise. And, to play your own music. Enjoy the moment.

We depart the marina two hours prior to sunset, or if you prefer, 3 hours prior. This tour is $325 (2 hours) and $400 (3 hours). You’re in the Keys!

For a couple in their early 30's who have never been on/driven a jet ski before this tour was a lot of fun! Our tour guide, Niko was very friendly and did a very good job making us feel comfortable throughout the tour. We stopped several times to view the different hotspots as Niko talked about their history. I'm very happy we chose to do this tour. The views of the clear turquoise waters and taking a short dip at the sandbar were my favorite part.

We had booked an All-day adventure but weather in the AM did not cooperate so we did the sunset snorkel dolphin and it was AMAZING!

Make sure you upgrade for the full bar its $20 but its beyond worth it! Thank you to the crew for making this bday one to remember.

Land the perfect outdoor adventure in The Florida Keys

When you drive along the Overseas Highway through The Florida Keys on a clear day, there’s a moment when it becomes tough to separate blue from blue. There’s the sky, arching overhead, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico stretching out below. In the shallow channels between The Keys the water gets so teal, it’s hard to tell where the sky ends and the liquid begins.

It’s an immensely inviting tableau, one that attracts thousands of visitors each year. They come for some 44 islands connected by the Overseas Highway, plus around 1700 islands and islets scattered around the main archipelago – exact numbers are hard to come by, as it depends on what gets classified as an ‘island.’

Whatever you call a slice of mangrove coast and palm forest surrounded by crystal waters, it’s always special. And that description continues, and grows, in the outdoor spaces and activities The Keys are so justifiably famous for.

Florida-Keys-Outdoors_boating.jpg

Go boating among the islands

For those who live in The Florida Keys, getting a boat is kind of like getting a car when you’re 16 – it opens a world of exploration and freedom that was previously nonexistent. This is an archipelago, after all, and the Overseas Highway notwithstanding, going by boat is the most natural way to get around.

It’s easy to rent a boat in The Keys, with locations in all the major districts of the archipelago (North to south: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, The Lower Keys, and Key West). The bigger question may be: where should you take the boat?

Dry Tortugas National Park is the most obvious answer. Located about 70 miles west of Key West, this 70-island archipelago includes the incomplete 19th-century Fort Jefferson, the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas, and a long list of isolated, excellent snorkeling spots. In the Upper Keys , the most varied island landscapes can be found around Islamorada, while Boot Key Harbor in Marathon boasts one of the best-resourced marinas in the islands.

If you’re into sailing, The Keys are practically paradise, with fair winds, calm waters, leaping dolphins and islands awaiting discovery the norm. Monohull sailors will find plenty of rentals down here, but excellent weather and shallow flats make The Keys especially inviting to multihull sailors. Even if you’ve never sailed, consider taking some lessons down here. Sailing schools dot the islands, and there are few more enjoyable, or forgiving, places to learn.

Whether you go by motor or wind power, talk to locals and your rental company about where to chart your course. By boating standards The Keys are not hard to navigate, but the channels between islands can get shallow, and grounding your vessel is a surefire way to ruin a vacation.

Florida-Keys-Outdoors_paddling.jpg

Go paddling & kayaking in the mangroves

Between the calm waters and more than a thousand islands, you could spend a lifetime paddling around The Florida Keys and Key West. Assuming you don’t have that kind of time, consider some quick excursions around John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , and bring some snorkeling gear – this is one of the best preserved coral reefs in the Lower 48.

There’s 170 acres of dry parkland here and more than 48,000 acres (75 sq miles) of wet: the vast majority of the protected area is the ocean. The park's most famous attraction is the coral-fringed Christ of the Abyss, an 8.5ft, 4000lb bronze sculpture of Jesus – a copy of a similar sculpture off the Portofino Peninsula in northern Italy.

For another great paddling excursion, head to Islamorada to rent a kayak and cruise out to Indian Key , once a busy little settlement of a few dozen souls, now a place of quiet, moldering ruins and still, natural beauty.

Florida-Keys-Outdoors_walking.jpg

Walk and hike the flat terrain

The simplest way to get outdoors is also the best way to explore The Keys’ most urban environment: Key West . The town’s historic center, on the west side of the island, is not just good for walking; in many ways it’s optimized for it. The narrow streets, dearth of parking and small distances makes having a car pointless as a sightseeing vehicle. Better to walk up Duval Street, take a left or a right, and then get pleasantly lost amid the historical homes shaded by palm fronds and sprays of bougainvillea. If you need a destination in mind, consider heading to the Key West Cemetery , a gothic slice of land where the ancestors of the islands rest in peace, and paradise.

The Keys are not known for hiking – it’s not like there’s any elevation here – but plenty of nice nature walks abound. You can lose yourself in the sweaty shade of the tropical hardwood forest at Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon, or say hello to the alligators that swim around the Blue Hole, on Big Pine Key. The Hole is a limestone sinkhole, surrounded by a platform trail a few hundred feet long; access it by turning onto Key Deer Blvd from the Overseas Highway and following that road until you see signs for the Blue Hole.

Florida-Keys-Outdoors_snorkeling.jpg

Dive and snorkel in the crystal waters

There’s no lack of excellent diving and snorkeling spots in the Keys, but the most well-known spots are John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Dry Tortugas. Visit Pennekamp because it is one of the few dedicated underwater coral reef parks in the country (and the only one on the Eastern seaboard). Snorkeling and diving tours can be reserved online and – especially for snorkeling – are suitable for newcomers to the sport. The appeal of the Dry Tortugas is the isolation from the rest of the islands and the unique experience of swimming around the old moat of Fort Jefferson.

With all that said, there is some excellent, underrated diving and snorkeling in the middle of The Keys at Islamorada, Marathon, and Big Pine Key. From Islamorada, access patch reefs (small, isolated reefs) like Cheeca Rocks; offshore from Marathon is the wonderful Sombrero Reef; at Big Pine is the ocean-adjacent Looe Key barrier reef. There’s a rainbow of marine life – including sea turtles – at all of these spots, but they must all be accessed via a boat tour.

Florida-Keys-Outdoors_biking.jpg

Bike a chain of keys

Biking around Key West is easy and pleasant, with easy access to Mallory Square, Mile Marker Zero, Ernest Hemingway's home, the southernmost point in the continental U.S., and more. But if you want to pedal a larger swath of the archipelago, consider the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail . The trail connects Key Largo to Key West, and as such, it is the slowest, most scenic means of getting across the islands.

The flat elevation and ocean breezes are perfect for cycling, and gorgeous vantage points are prevalent along the way, but take caution – parts of the trail cross from the ocean side of the road to the bay side, sometimes unexpectedly. Additionally, parts of the trail share a 3-foot shoulder with the busy Overseas Hwy. For all that, cycling around the islands can be utter magic – just check with local outfitters before you get on two wheels.
