The Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA) was established in 1981—by Presidential Decree No. 134—as a regulatory body affiliated with the Ministry of Tourism. ETA’s mission is to boost international tourism by promoting Egypt’s rich history and civilization and highlighting the country’s abundance of diverse tourist attractions. Part of ETA’s mandate is to also address any obstacles that may stand in the way of growth in Egypt’s tourism sector. It also aims to promote domestic tourism, raise tourism awareness throughout the country, and strengthen the connection between Egyptians and their heritage.

ETA works to achieve its objectives by:

  • • Highlighting the diversity and variety of Egypt’s tourist attractions and destinations
  • • Developing marketing strategies and programs to promote international and domestic tourism
  • • Providing technical and marketing support in coordination with relevant entities for the promotion of tourism

ETA also organizes and sponsors tourism, sports, social, cultural, entertainment, and educational events held at tourist attractions, archaeological sites, and museums across Egypt. These activities shed light on Egypt’s diversity of experiences and highlight the country’s competitive edge as a destination for international travelers.

The ETA Board of Directors is chaired by the Minister of Tourism. Its members include the ETA’s CEO and representatives from relevant entities, such as the Chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Federation (ETF), the Egyptian Travel Agents Association, and the Egyptian Hotel Association; the Chairman of the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority; the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities; the Director General of the Grand Egyptian Museum; and four additional tourism sector experts. The ETA Board of Directors is responsible for setting ETA’s general policies and making the necessary decisions to help achieve its goals and objectives.

Egypt Tourism

Egypt, officially known as the Arab Republic of Egypt, is one of the oldest countries in the world. Once considered the “Cradle of Civilisation” for its advanced society built along the banks of the fertile Nile River, the country has today evolved into a tourism hotspot, boasting two giant coastlines and the iconic pyramids.

Egyptian civilisation traces its history back to almost 8000 BC, making it a must-see destination for historians and interested travellers alike. The country’s long and rich cultural tradition has kept up with years of modernisation and foreign influence, ensuring it remains one of the most diverse destinations for serious vacationers.

It’s for these reasons that Egypt tourism has been on the rise over the last few years. There’s a lot to offer. You could enjoy a day at the beach, time-travel with the ancient monuments, or enjoy the raging nightlife in a number of cities. But be assured of one thing, you’ll never be bored.

Quick Overview

Egypt geography .

Egypt is a country in North-eastern Africa, that includes a large part of the Sinai Peninsula, which is almost considered Asia. It has almost 3000 km of coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Red Sea, so prepare to spend a number of your days lazing by the sea.

Egypt is further divided into Upper Egypt in the South and Lower Egypt in the North. This is because the Nile flows from the South to the North, eventually meeting the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean Sea. While Upper Egypt is mostly desert, with a few low mountains, Lower Egypt has more urban spaces, wide valleys and the mouth of the Nile, near Cairo. Make sure you pack accordingly while planning your Egypt tours.

Egypt Climate

Egypt is mostly desert, meaning it’s warm through the year, even during the winter months. The best time to visit Egypt is during the “winter” months of October to February when temperatures can range between 11 and 25 degrees.

The less popular months for Egypt tourism are July and August. During this season, you’ll experience hot and dry winds during the day. Temperatures can switch between 7 degrees and 45 degrees in a single day! Avoid the Western Desert completely during this season.

The Mediterranean is slightly cooler during these months but that also means crowded beaches and higher rates for rooms. The period between March and May is spring season in Egypt, bringing with it a few dust storms. So don’t venture too far out from your hotel at this time of year.

Egypt receives fewer than 80 mm of rainfall in a year.

Egypt Culture

Egypt has a population of around 70 million people, a majority of whom are Sunni Muslims, followed by a large minority of Coptic Christians. The country speaks mostly Arabic. But the country also has thousands of years of recorded history, which make Egypt tours akin to travelling through time.

Since Egypt is a Muslim country, please respect the faith and local customs. Public displays of affection are frowned upon and traditions are meant to be followed. Remove your shoes before entering any establishment. That said, Egyptians are a very friendly people, always willing to help tourists out with directions, or with their time.

Most establishments are closed on Fridays, the holy day in Islam, while some also close on Thursdays. Alcohol and pork are permitted in some places, not really consumed by the locals. During the month of Ramadan, Egypt tourism takes a backseat, as Muslims are only allowed to work for six hours a day. Remember that in this period, eating, drinking or even chewing gum on the streets is not allowed.

Egypt Tour

Egypt tourism has something for everyone. To enjoy a bit of natural beauty, you could take a tour through the Nile, or take deep-sea diving lessons. For fans of history, there’s so much on offer. Do remember to include the Pyramids of Giza, and Abu Simbel temples, which have giant rock carvings of famous pharaohs, in the itinerary of your Egypt tours .

Another Egypt tourism favourite is the Museum of Ancient Egypt, a building containing the world’s largest collection of pharaonic artefacts. Tourists often flock to the Great Sphinx, a figure popularised by movies and books over the years. No one exactly knows who built the Sphinx or why.

Egypt Tourism Tips

The following are some Egypt travel tips and do's and don'ts to keep in mind during your Egypt  trip.

• Always keep plenty of water with you. The weather is harsh in most parts, and you don’t want to find yourself dehydrated with miles of desert in either direction.

• Remember to tip all your staff, as tipping is a big part of Egyptian culture.

• Respect the rules and regulations at the monuments you visit. Those rules are meant to protect the monuments for posterity.

• Dress modestly when not in the cities of Cairo or Alexandra, and especially when visiting religious places.

• Remember to carry proper footwear. No point walking around in the hot sun with slippers on!

• Don’t get lost! Plan where you’re going well in advance and use taxi services from your hotel.

• Do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during the month of Ramadan.

• Do not speak to or take photographs of local women without their permission. Also, if you’re a woman, it is best not to walk around alone.

• Do not eat with your left hand when sharing food with the locals. It is frowned upon as it is considered to be unhygienic.

  • A Thrilling Trip To Egypt From India In 2021 – Busting 6 Common Myths About This Wonderful Country

27 Mar 2023

Egypt had long been on Shivani’s mind. The mystical monuments, bizarre pyramids, Arabian towns, aromatic spice souks, and the famous Nile had been calling out to her for long, beckoning her to this lovely country. And when she finally got a chance to explore this Middle Eastern beauty with her son and husband, she planned her trip to Egypt from India in a way that would allow her to enjoy it to the fullest! See what all she did on her trip to make it memorable.

Egypt is a fascinating country and unlike any in the world. I have always wanted to see those Arabian deserts and enchanting pyramids with my own eyes. But the reviews of the country and the people kind of put me off. However, I did not let that damper my yearning to visit. I decided to go ahead with my trip and experience for myself what all this beautiful country had to offer, and boy am I glad that I did!

I chose to travel via TravelTriangle since they let me customize my itinerary and let me deal with the agent directly, something not many travel firms offer. The agent constantly kept me updated with the progress on my trip and I had nothing to worry about.

If you’re skeptical about taking that trip to Egypt yourself, let me bust a few myths about this wonderful country so that you can have the best of experiences there.

Why You Should Definitely Visit Egypt – Myths Vs Reality

Here are a few myths and misconceptions about Egypt that I came across on my trip to Egypt from India . Given below them are my experiences that prove none of these preconceived notions about Egypt are true:

MYTH 1: “The People Of Egypt Are Not Friendly”

best memories

I discovered that the locals of Egypt are some of the friendliest and most helpful folk in the world. People are extremely nice and hospitable. Whether it’s a shopkeeper in a general store or someone walking down the street, they would totally stop by to help you with whatever you need. The natives of Egypt are also very trustworthy people, and you’re least likely to be conned during your trip to Egypt.

Must Read: Egypt Wildlife: 8 Best Natural Reserves Of Egypt To Attract Every Wildlife Lover

MYTH 2: “Don’t Shop In Local Markets”

camel riding

The true essence and joy of shopping in Egypt lie in its local bazaars and souks. You haven’t truly experienced this place if you haven’t visited any of its bustling shopping streets brimming with the most authentic Middle Eastern goods and handicrafts. We had been told that shopkeepers in these local markets quote ridiculously high prices, do not let you bargain, and do not offer quality products. None of that is true.

You’ll find people selling authentic merchandise in the markets and souks of Egypt that are very much open to bargaining. Besides, it’s their sole means of livelihood, and most of the craft items, clothes, handbags, food, home decor items, and souvenirs you buy here are handmade, which is why the prices tend to be higher than what you get elsewhere. But you’ll find it all to be worth every penny you spend.

We ourselves ended up buying a variety of beautiful souvenirs and gift items from these markets in dirt cheap rates. We also bought the local ‘namkeen’ – packets of roasted seeds of fruits like watermelons, pumpkins, and sunflowers that are salted and spiced.

MYTH 3: “Dress Conservatively. Your Arms And Legs Should Be Covered”

memorable trip

We could find a number of tourists roaming around wearing hot pants and sleeveless tops, and none of the locals were raising an objection against travelers who were not covered from head to toe. Nowadays, people are very open to wearing whatever they want in these Middle Eastern nations without being looked down upon or ridiculed in public. One should, however, cover their legs, arms, and heads before entering any holy place such as a mosque.

MYTH 4: “Book A Hotel Near Popular Attractions Like The Sphinx”

exploring the place

On the contrary, one should always book a hotel that lies within the city limits. This way, you’ll be closer to a lot of facilities like grocery stores, pharmacies, vehicle rentals, and restaurants to help you in times of need. Staying in a hotel in the middle of the desert offering nothing other than gorgeous views of the Sphinx and the pyramids will not do you any good in case an emergency arises. Plus, they’re also pretty expensive!

Staying in or near the city will allow you to see more than just the famous tourist attractions, and you can explore Egypt more like a local than a tourist.

MYTH 5: “Egypt Is Just About Barren Deserts, Lofty Pyramids & Camel Rides”

 fascinated with Egypt’s history

No sir! There’s so much more to this country than meets the eye. Scholars and history geeks will totally love being here, owing to the treasure trove of knowledge and wisdom it provides to its visitors. From the Light and Sound Show at the Sphinx and the Giza pyramids to the informative and guided tour of the Egyptian Museum, you’ll be surprised by how much you will end up learning here.

My son was fascinated with Egypt’s history, museums, and even mummies. He was constantly taking notes throughout our Egypt tour. He was super ecstatic about visiting the Aswan Dam that he had been studying about for weeks, and the pictorial representation of the construction of this dam that he found near this attraction itself helped him gain in-depth knowledge about the same.

Seeing the pyramids and learning how they came into being was the most exceptional experience of my trip. The Egyptian Museum didn’t tell us about them as much as the Light & Sound Show did. The geometrical dexterity from every angle was simply mind-blowing, and it made us wonder how the people who built it had this kind of a technology thousands of years ago!

MYTH 6: “You Won’t Find Good Vegetarian Food In Egypt”

love being here

The other thing we came across on our trip to Egypt from India is that the food of Egypt is very similar to that of India. So, there’s no reason for Indian travelers, even vegetarians, to be afraid. The spices are also more or less the same. In fact, much of India’s exotic spices are imported from Egypt. You’ll find good outlets and vendors making delicious Shawarmas and Falafels almost at every corner, two of Egypt’s most famous dishes that have now turned into my favorites!

Whether you’re a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian, you’ll totally love the food options in Egypt during your Egypt tour from India. And the best part – good Egyptian cuisine at pocket-friendly rates won’t be hard to find.

Some Egypt Travel Tips For A Hassle-Free Holiday

  • Don’t go by what people say about Egypt. Experience it for yourself and you’ll be surprised!
  • Give more preferences to local markets and souls for shopping rather than malls. You’ll only find the actual local produce of Egypt, including pretty souvenirs, in these markets.
  • While buying stuff from local craftsmen in bazaars, bargain only to a certain extent keeping in mind that the items you’re buying are their sole means of income.
  • Take a guided tour of the Egyptian Museum.
  • Keep yourself hydrated at all times. Egypt weather is quite dry, so one needs to drink plenty of water and apply generous amounts of moisturizer before stepping out.

What To Pack For Egypt Trip

Common Queries We Had While Planning Our Holiday

We had quite a few doubts while we were planning our trip. Now that we’re back from our trip to Egypt from India, we would like to answer them to help you book yours smoothly.

Do you know any interesting facts about Egypt?

The pyramids were, by far, the most interesting aspect owing to their geometrical accuracy that just blew our minds. We learned a great deal about the interesting history of Egypt and the origin of the Giza pyramids at the museum and the Light & Sound Show. Even the temples of Luxor and the city of Alexandria had a curious history that can put one in a trance. In fact, everything about this marvelous country was intriguing, no matter where we went.

What is the most common food in Egypt?

We could find Shawarmas and Falafels at every nook and corner. Other than this, roasted salted seeds of fruits like pumpkin, sunflower, and watermelon seemed to be the favorite snack of all Egyptians. You could easily find them in all grocery stores across Egypt.

What is the best time to visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is ideally from November to April. We had visited in April and it was already starting to get warmer. The air is very dry during this time, so make sure you carry plenty of water as well as keep your skin moisturized regularly.

How much should an Egypt trip cost?

Overall, our trip cost us around 1 lakh per person, including the stay, shopping, transfers, and other tidbits. For a trip of 9 days to cities like Cairo and Aswan, the ideal Egypt trip cost from India should be between 3-5 lakhs depending on your choice of accommodation and modes of transit.

How should female tourists dress in Egypt?

Females are recommended to dress modestly in Egypt. They can wear sundresses with leggings and denim with non-revealing tops. Also, they must keep a scarf with them as there are some tourist attractions where they would need to cover their heads.

What is the coldest month in Egypt?

January is considered as the coldest month in Egypt when the temperature is about 14°C.

One of the oldest civilisations in the world, India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences. With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It covers an area of 32, 87,263 sq. km, extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. As the 7th largest country in the world, India stands apart from the rest of Asia, marked off as it is by mountains and the sea, which give the country a distinct geographical entity.

Fringed by the Great Himalayas in the north, it stretches southwards and at the Tropic of Cancer, tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. As you travel the expanse of the country, you are greeted by diverse nuances of cuisines, faiths, arts, crafts, music, nature, lands, tribes, history and adventure sports. India has a mesmeric conflation of the old and the new. As the bustling old bazaars rub shoulders with swanky shopping malls, and majestic monuments accompany luxurious heritage hotels, the quintessential traveller can get the best of both worlds. Head to the mountains, enjoy a beach retreat or cruise through the golden Thar, India has options galore for all.

Egypt and India eye 'strategic partnership' as Modi visits

India's Narendra Modi praised his visit to Cairo as "historic" after he and Egypt's Abdel Fattah el-Sissi pledged to boost trade and diplomatic ties.

India and Egypt vowed to elevate trade and diplomatic ties during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first trip to the north African country.

On Sunday, Modi and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi "signed a joint declaration to elevate relations to a strategic partnership," which they had first announced in January when el-Sissi visited New Delhi, a spokesperson for the Egyptian leader said. The two nations pledged to intensify their cooperation and hold periodic talks, according to an official statement.

"My visit to Egypt was a historic one," Modi later said on Twitter.

"It will add renewed vigor to India-Egypt relations and will benefit the people of our nations."

Modi wants $12 billion in annual trade

India is already Egypt's seventh-largest trading partner with trade surpassing $7 billion (€6.4 billion) last year, according to data from Cairo's central bank.

Modi said he hopes to increase this to $12 billion annually.

In the lead-up to the visit, Egypt offered a potential "dedicated land area" for Indian industries in the Suez Canal Economic Zone that could be used as the site for a $12 billion green hydrogen plant built by Indian firm ACME.

The two leaders also discussed food and energy insecurity "and the need for Global South to have a concerted voice," Modi's office said on Sunday.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine drove up grain prices globally in 2022, India banned wheat exports to protect its reserves but granted an exception to Egypt, the world's biggest wheat importer.

Modi visits Cairo mosque

Modi's visit also took on cultural significance when he toured the 11th-century Al-Hakim mosque — a rare engagement for the Hindu nationalist prime minister.

The mosque was renovated by the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community that originated in Modi's home state of Gujarat.

Meanwhile, el-Sissi bestowed Egypt's highest honor, the Order of the Nile, on the Indian leader.

Modi is the first Indian prime minister to pay a state visit to Egypt in more than two decades. His trip comes off the back of a four-day visit to the United States where he met with President Joe Biden.

Exclusive Interview: Minister Ahmed Issa’s Vision For Egypt’s Tourism Sector

Tamer Hafez

Tamer Hafez

With a career spanning over 30 years in banking and finance, Ahmed Issa, the former CEO of retail banking at CIB, Egypt’s largest listed bank, has a proven track record of being a “natural-born” builder.

In 1998, he was one of the three founders of CIBC, later called CI Capital, which grew to be one of Egypt’s top brokerages. “That is when I realized my interest is in building new things,” Issa says. “The bank identified me as a potential leader [of new projects]. As such, they put me on track to either lead or be part of the leadership team of new activities projects.”

With such a background, few would guess he would be appointed as the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. For Issa, the call from Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in August 2022 telling him he was nominated for the position “felt like a culmination of my 30-year career in managing change and [as] a problem solver.”

One of the critical advantages of having someone from outside the sector lead it is that he comes with pragmatic views and fresh perspectives to increase Egypt’s tourist arrivals and revenues from that vital sector.

The replies to the questions were edited for length and clarity.

How did you feel when you got the call informing you of the nomination for the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities position?

The prevailing feelings were of extreme pride and excitement. I met the Prime Minister on a Sunday evening, where he informed me of the nomination and asked me a few questions about my plans to improve the sector.

The holistic challenge was to determine who in the tourism sector deserves to receive the nation’s savings and how I can lead the industry to the “next level.” As someone who has given loans to tourism companies throughout my career, I know a lot about how the sector operates. Nevertheless, it took all my experience to set a plan, as I am now in charge of the regulating authority.

Another challenge was to ensure the Ministry’s strategies and policies cement its role as a regulator to serve better the tourism ecosystem, which comprises over 8,000 tourism companies, marine and diving centers, bazaars, restaurants, and civil society organizations that represent the industry vis-a-vis the regulator and policymaker.

What is your strategy to grow Egypt’s tourism sector?

As a problem solver, I had to quickly identify why the tourism sector has yet to realize its potential. I firmly believe that the Egyptian tourism industry deserves so much more.

On the upside, Egypt is spending a lot on improving infrastructure and quality. The country now can receive millions more tourists. Some of those developments are building a sustainable transport network [high-speed train and monorail] to ensure a magnificent experience for those seeking ‘sun-and-sea’ and Egypt’s unparalleled cultural and historical experiences.

The other positive is that Egypt is a very safe country compared to most other popular tourist destinations.

That meant our strategy was straightforward. There is plenty of demand, as there are hundreds of millions of travelers worldwide each year. The fundamental issue Egypt faces is that supply is limited. There are three components to that limitation: plane seats, accommodation rooms, and the tourist experience. We plan to have over 100,000 accommodation rooms on the Red Sea and build the infrastructure to make it accessible for tourists.

Accordingly, my first task was to ensure supply growth and to deliver our product. Those two factors come from more effective promotion and marketing of Egypt as a top-tier and diverse destination for foreign visitors. The other factor is to have a presence in foreign countries to interact with travelers who have Egypt on their shortlist of destinations.

Our marketing activities focus on families, adventure, beach, and culture. These products are extremely popular across a handful of countries. Our focus is on identifying where Egypt has the most competitive advantage and targeting potential travelers in those nations with suitable promotional and marketing activities.

How are you compensating for the loss of Russian and Ukrainian visitors? (In 2019, they were the top two nationalities visiting Egypt.)

We developed a strategy in response to the Russia and Ukraine conflict to maximize the number of tourists still willing to travel. We also designed and implemented strategies to diversify the nationalities of visitors to replace lost demand quickly.

Since the conflict started, the number of Russian tourists has been recovering, but not to the previous average levels.

Meanwhile, we saw more tourists from Germany, the U.S., Italy, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, Poland, Saudi Arabia, India, and China. The growth rates from those countries were equal to 2019 and 2022.

For various reasons, Egypt has gained market share from other destinations, including Latin America and Asia. Meanwhile, European travelers are finding Egypt a more attractive destination than ever, as they now seek destinations that offer better value for money.

Demand has been growing so fast that tour agencies have increased prices. We have seen prices to visit Egypt rise between 20% and 50%.

How are you digitizing the tourism sector?

One of the main benefits of digitization is that it improves the tourist experience, which is one of the main issues we have always faced.

We started by offering tourists the option to book tickets to museums and other destinations on our website using a bank card. Meanwhile, local tour agencies can buy in bulk for their customers with a 5% discount.

That has had a tremendous impact. Last year, 90% of the Supreme Council of Antiquities’ ticket sales revenues were cash. This year, that percentage declined to 3%. Meanwhile, pre-booking online means tourists will not need to stand in line at any site or museum to get tickets.

However, we need to continue digitizing and automating our services to ensure we take those services to the next level and the one above. We are never satisfied and are always looking for better ways to improve.

What are the biggest challenges facing tourism in Egypt? And how are you solving them?

The two main fundamental limitations are plane seats and accommodation rooms. For the former, we have an effective incentive plan to grow plane seats yearly for all carriers coming to Egypt.

Of course, each tour agency has its own problems, but those two are overarching challenges that will open Egypt’s tourism market to new heights.

However, as regulators, we are always looking to do better. We have to automate and digitize our services to industry players. We also have to expedite our license-issuing process to hotels and other establishments. We have to monitor the overall performance of the businesses we regulate and take their performance to the next level.

Accordingly, we have enacted several programs and initiatives. First, we contracted the private sector to manage facilities for visitors and services in several museums and archaeological sites. That is a critical initiative that we will continue to expand.

We are also using the higher income from raising ticket prices to double our spending on restoring and maintaining monuments and archaeological sites to preserve them for the next generation. We are also doubling our capital expenditure budget for museums and other archaeological sites to improve their tourist experience.

On the tourism side, we are expediting the process of allocating land to private-sector tourism companies. Meanwhile, The Sovereign Fund of Egypt is working closely with the Egyptian Tourism Federation and other industry associations to coordinate the re-purposing of abandoned government buildings in Downtown Cairo to become a historical tourist destination or hotel.

Some facilities that ministries have vacated to relocate to the new capital are classified as historical palaces per Egyptian laws. Some would be repurposed to become among the region’s most luxurious and exclusive hotels.

Are you introducing any legislative reforms?

The President recently ratified a new law that allows tourism companies to self-regulate via the federation and tourism chambers in tandem with the ministry’s regulatory framework. Those industry bodies know their industry the best, and, as a regulator, we must support them.

Accordingly, the law will put unprecedented powers in the hands of associations representing tourism companies to reform the investment climate and truly put the private sector in a leadership position to grow the industry without violating the Ministry’s laws and regulations.

One example is that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities will only give a license to a company if they are members of the Egyptian Tourism Federation. That way, we would ensure that industry players comply with the federation’s standards and regulations.

That [delegation of responsibility] means the Ministry could focus on developing and growing the tourism sector rather than auditing new players and solving individual problems.

Only 150,000 Indian tourists visited Egypt in 2023; scope for more with direct flights: Ambassador

Gagneet Kaur

Wael Hamed shared that during discussions with Indian authorities last year about the Cairo-Delhi flights, there was optimism that these flights would maintain high occupancy rates. “Filling these flights will indeed be a significant achievement,” the ambassador expressed.

While the recent enhancements in connectivity between Egypt and India are a strategic move, Wael Hamed, Ambassador of Egypt to India pointed out that the tourist traffic in 2023 from India was ‘disappointing’.

“Only 150,000 Indian tourists visited Egypt last year, a modest figure in comparison to the 25 million Indian tourists who travel abroad annually. Direct connectivity is crucial for fostering a fruitful relationship, and the new routes are poised to increase tourist traffic from India to Egypt,” stated Hamed.

To note, Egypt’s tourism sector was somewhat affected by the Gaza conflict, but the impact was cushioned by high pre-existing bookings and strategic measures from the government and tourism operators. Being largely unaffected by the conflict, Egypt welcomed 14.9 million tourists in 2023 according to the sources.

Speaking further on the newly launched direct flights from Cairo to Mumbai and Delhi, Hamed emphasised this development as a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations. Notably, EgyptAir is set to increase the frequency of its flights from Cairo to Mumbai and Delhi, aiming for daily operations. Currently, the airline operates four weekly flights from Delhi and five from Mumbai, yet there are some unutilised frequencies.

Hamed shared that during discussions with Indian authorities last year about the Cairo-Delhi flights, there was optimism that these flights would maintain high occupancy rates. “Filling these flights will indeed be a significant achievement, reflecting the potential of one of the world’s largest countries—India,” he added. Notably, the existing flights from Delhi operate from Friday to Monday.

“We remain committed to collaborating with the relevant authorities to address any remaining issues and further enhance our connectivity. Together, we can reach new horizons and foster a thriving exchange of culture and tourism between our nations,” the ambassador affirmed, while speaking during an EgyptAir roadshow in Delhi.

Besides enhancing the India frequencies, EgyptAir is on track to significantly grow its fleet by 2026, adding 28 new aircraft, including the wide-body Airbus A350. EgyptAir’s current fleet also includes six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with two more expected soon.
