Programs in India
World Leadership School works with host communities outside of Mumbai. On a School-to-School Partnership program, students will spend the first few days in Mumbai learning about their unique new surroundings. Students have the rare chance to learn about one of the world’s largest slums, Dharavi, which is home to over a million people. Students will meet with local leaders and local business owners that make this unique area a hub of industry and innovation. Then the students will transfer to their host community, where they will live with host families and take part in a community engagement project alongside local students. They will gather a unique glimpse into the daily life of rural India while making connections that will last a lifetime. On a typical NGO Partnership India student travel program, students will learn from and work with local leaders that are doing inspiring work in education, medicine, women’s empowerment, and much more.
India’s diversity is immense: over one billion people, 18 main languages, 844 dialects, and six main religions. India’s rise as a global superpower is no longer in doubt. But important questions remain as to how India’s legacy of caste, its multicultural mix, and the crushing burden of poverty will impact India’s economic future. India is located in Southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, between Myanmar and Pakistan. Its terrain is marked by plains in the south, rolling plains along the Ganges, arid deserts in the West and the majestic Himalayan Mountains in the North.
India has capitalized on its large numbers of well-educated people, skilled in the English language, to become a major exporter of software and other outsourcing services. Despite its dazzling economic growth, India is still a desperately poor country by most measures. The average person still earns less than $2 a day. Almost a quarter of India’s population lives in extreme poverty, according to the World Bank. As a result of this poverty, about half of India’s school children are malnourished – even higher than sub-Saharan Africa.
The safety of our programs rests on the experience and skills of our Staff, Country Coordinators and Instructors, who convene at our annual training in Colorado’s Arkansas Valley.
- The Staff of World Leadership School have decades of experience working in different educational environments. Their focus is logistics, risk management, program design, professional development, and consulting.
- Our Country Coordinators live and work year round in our overseas countries. They screen our homestay families, evaluate our transport and other service providers, and provide ground support for our groups.
- Our Instructors are veteran educators with extensive international experience. They have wilderness first responder training and often have past affiliations with Peace Corps, Outward Bound, NOLS , and/or independent schools.
We strive to responsibly manage risks. Our itineraries minimize highway travel and maximize immersion in rural communities that we know well. We update our risk management protocols, integrate feedback into program design, and invest in safety and communication equipment. Despite these efforts, World Leadership School cannot guarantee safety nor can it eliminate the inherent and other risks of international student travel. For information regarding program activities and associated risks, risk management, and student and parent responsibilities, please contact our office.
“Going to India helped me grow as a leader, friend, and supporter by realizing those roles aren’t that different.”
— Student from The Berkeley Carroll School
“Here in India, I had nowhere to hide. There was nothing to distract me from myself …Here I realized my potential, my strengths, weaknesses, value, and hopes. I realized that seeing others at their best and doing things at their greatest potential makes me happy. I realized that language isn’t the only way to communicate. I realized that a smile can be the reason why someone else smiles. I realized that I want to be that reason or at least part of it. I hope to seek and support the best in others, which in turn brings out the best in me.”
“This program has inspired me to pursue what I love, live positively, and explore the world and sit with or walk with others along the way.”
— Student from Lincoln School
“I have always wanted to travel, but this program helped me realize that I want to travel to be with people, that it’s not just about observing but immersing and absorbing in order to be one around the world.”
Costs & Itinerary
“As our rickshaws sped closer and closer to the limits of Heranjal, we shared a moment of silence to appreciate and reflect our time spent in the village. We are grateful for our homestay family’s willingness to share their lives with us and giving us an experience we will never forget.” - The Berkeley Carroll School, India 2019
“We all walked around 15 minutes to a new village called Divi. From 5 minutes away we could hear the music, laughter, and burst of fireworks. When we arrived we were immediately welcomed to dance with the little boys and girls, and then eventually became a part of the parade. One of the oldest woman of the Divi village even came out to dance with all of us. It was that moment where we felt at home.” - Lincoln School, India 2018
“While walking through Dharavi we experienced a range of emotions that deeply affected our attitudes towards each other and the understanding of what a slum is. Most importantly we learned that a slum is not a place full of crime and poverty, but a place where communities come together to work hard for the things they love and care for.” - Parish Episcopal School, India 2017
“As we closed our eyes during a “prayer,” footsteps shuffled around us…and suspicion of why we needed to wear bandanas around our face soon became clear. We proceeded to have our own mini Holi Hai festival with music and dancing. To keep the surprises going, we were lead to a river and jump in to clean ourselves off. After some sharks and minnows, we went back to our homestays to shower, eat lunch, play games, and build deeper relationships across cultural differences.” - The Berkeley Carroll School, India 2018
“Today has been a very busy busy day, starting off at 5:30am with a hike to see the sun rise. Later in the morning, while most of the group played with the children and continued to paint the school, we took part in an important conversation. We discussed ways to strengthen and further develop the bond between our schools and communities.” - Lincoln School, India 2016
“After a delicious breakfast of agila and chapatti (both pancake like foods), we walked from our homestays to Krishna’s house for some morning activities. We were delighted to see the familiar faces of some of the school children we had played with the previous day joining our games. After they went off to school, we prepared for our first lesson in Yakshagana, a traditional religious dance performed at many ceremonies. It’s so valued that our Yakshagana teacher Shinivas’s dance team is booked for the next 20 years.” - The Berkeley Carroll School, India 2016
“At the beginning of the trip, we did an exercise where we imagined a target on the ground as we were standing in a circle. In the center was the place where we are most comfortable. On the outside was the place that was WAY out of our comfort zone. At some point on this trip all of us have been at both places. We have been stretched and pulled to lengths that we didn't think possible. Your children are stronger, wiser men and women today than they were two weeks ago. Thank you for your trust in allowing them to participate.” - Ensworth School, India 2015
Frequently Asked Questions
We use the term “Collaborative Leadership Programs” to describe all of our student travel. Collaborative refers to all the relationships and learning that happen when students work alongside peer students and local leaders from the host community.
WLS is more than a travel provider. We are a school change agent. We not only help our schools build immersive travel programs, but we integrate these programs into classroom learning in order to drive innovation.
We are disciplined about the travel programs we work on in order to pursue our mission to “partner with K-12 schools to reimagine learning and create next-generation leaders.” We focus on long-term, partnership-based travel programs with schools that are seeking to bring greater purpose to learning. We support the integration of these programs into classroom learning via support services for educators such as workshops, coaching, and conferences.
There is an understandable backlash against service learning done wrong. For too long, organizations have offered experiences that are poorly planned, episodic, and transactional. Volunteers arrive and depart with the illusion of helping. The reality is that these volunteers can do more harm than good. At World Leadership School, we believe that traveling students can be a powerful force for good if service learning is done responsibly. We have a long track record of positive results in the communities where we operate. Many of our programs involve Community Projects, while other programs focus on NGO collaboration or work with our partner nonprofit, TeachUNITED .
Our approach to service learning is “Walking Together.” We build long-term, year-round relationships with communities via our country coordinators, who live close to our communities. We pair a maximum of two traveling schools with a host community to ensure sustainability and deep relationships. We listen to and work alongside local leaders in order to accomplish community goals, rather than come in with new ideas. Our students are prepared ahead of time to listen and learn, rather than help.
- Focus on one place, one partnership. Our groups spend their entire time in a single community and the focus is building a strong partnership. Our traveling schools go back year after year to this same place. Though students change each year, many faculty return year after year to the same community.
- Work like an NGO . Since 2007, our sister nonprofit World Leadership Foundation has invested $950,000 in donations raised each year by students. These funds are invested in Community Projects , which are planned by the communities in which we operate.
- Our traveling students also support many of the same rural schools served by TeachUNITED, which spun off from World Leadership Foundation in 2020. TeachUNITED works to transform rural education in Tanzania, Costa Rica, and rural USA through an innovative combination of side-by-side instructional coaches, teacher workshops, tablet technology, and online learning.
Each year, World Leadership School staff, instructors, and country coordinators manage approximately 900 students and faculty on immersive programs across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the U.S. Our staff and instructors have extensive experience and training in risk management, which is a focus of our annual spring instructor training retreat. World Leadership School offers risk management workshops to our partner schools.
Our approach to risk management emphasizes three principles:
Risk management is a continuous conversation that happens at all levels of a program at once and we structure that conversation with a simple tool we call AMP (Analyze, Manage, Prepare). This conversation happens at the level of our Staff , who are in close connection with school leaders and parents; our Coordinators , who work with our communities before, during, and after a program; our Instructors and Faculty , who build a close working relationship; and our Students , who run AMP sessions each morning.
Keep it simple. We make risk protocols simple so that our Staff, Coordinators, Instructors, Faculty, and Students are all on the same page.
Education and risk management go hand in hand. When programs are integrated with classroom learning, risk management improves. We help our schools integrate off-campus programs into the classroom via a variety of educator development services.
We strive to responsibly manage risks. Our itineraries minimize highway travel and maximize immersion in rural communities that we know well. We update our risk management protocols, integrate feedback into program design, and invest in safety and communication equipment. For a complete summary of our approach, read this article in Independent School magazine.
Despite these efforts, World Leadership School cannot guarantee safety nor can it eliminate the inherent and other risks of international student travel. For information regarding program activities and associated risks, risk management, and student and parent responsibilities, please contact our office .
For more information about our COVID -19 policies, please visit the COVID -19 page .
Most of our programs have 10-15 participants, 1-2 faculty from the traveling school, and 1-2 Instructors. We strive for a 1:4 ratio of adults to students. WLS also designs full-class programs with 60-80 students and 10-15 teachers. We work closely with these schools to divide the larger group into smaller groups during the day.
Many World Leadership School students travel each year to places like Peru and Costa Rica with no knowledge of Spanish, to Tanzania with no knowledge of Swahili, to Haiti without knowledge of Haitian Creole, etc. We believe communicating across cultural lines in the absence of a common language is an important 21st century skill. To help students manage homestays in another language, we help students develop a survival vocabulary in the local language. We also take language fluency into account when doing homestay pairings.
Many of the students from our programs come back from their extraordinary experience and wonder: “What is next?” There are many ways to stay engaged once a program is over. Past World Leadership School alumni have taken their WLS experience deeper by working with their partner community on a research project throughout college.
We love to hear from all past program participants and students! Please take this quick online survey to give us an idea of what you’ve done since your WLS experience. Like us on Facebook , follow us on Twitter , and Instagram , stay connected to the WLS Alumni Network , and be sure to check out our blog .
Our instructors are seasoned educators who have between 10-15 years of teaching experience in the classroom, wilderness settings, or overseas programs. Many of our instructors are full-time classroom teachers and have a background with the National Outdoor Leadership School or the US Peace Corps. Our instructors have traveled extensively in the developing world and are current on their Wilderness First Responder training. Our instructors are amazing human beings who love working with children, engaging with the world, and leading immersive experiential learning. We bring all our instructors together each April at our annual staff training. For instructor profiles, see “Who We Are.”

15 Best Educational Places to Visit in India | Ideas for a Refreshing Field Trip
Traveling is slowly but steadily becoming a big part of academics and education. It is an important way through which one can experience the world; moreover, you can learn a lot while traveling. It has been said that the one that has traveled has seen, heard, and felt so many things that when they return, they aren’t the same person anymore. There are many things in life that can only be learned through experience, and traveling acts as a medium for that kind of learning. Here are 15 places to visit in India for students that are looking to learn while experiencing the wonders of these places.
1. Magnetic Hill
Location : Leh, Ladakh Who should visit : Anyone with a curious mind for wonders of nature, those who like long drives.
The Magnetic Hill is located in Leh, Ladakh. The stretch that is specifically called the Magnetic Hill is 7.5 km southeast of Nimmoo and 26.5 km west of Leh on Srinagar-Ladakh Road. It is part of the Leh-Kargil Highway and is 14,000 ft above sea level. The reason this hill is called the Magnetic Hill is that when a car is left with its engine off, it still rolls up the hill at a speed of 20 km/hr.
There are many theories and myths which offer an explanation for this phenomenon. Locals of the area believe that the road once led to heaven, and it would pull anyone deserving upward to heaven. On the same note, it is said that the undeserving will never be able to find their way to it. However, there are two scientific theories, which is that the hill has such a strong magnetic pull that it pulls vehicles in the area. The more likely explanation though is that it is because of an optical illusion. The hill appears to have an upslope when in reality, the road goes downhill not uphill, hence not defying laws of nature.
Location : Assam Who should visit : Those interested in knowing where historical “firsts” took place.
Digboi is a small town in the Tinsukia district, in Assam. This place may not have architectural structures of wonder, or laws of nature defying natural spaces, however, this place does have a significant place in history. Crude Oil was discovered here in the late 19 century and the first oil well was dug in 1866. Moreover, Digboi is known as the Oil City of Assam where the first oil well of Asia was drilled.
By 1901, the first oil refinery was established. In 1867, Italian Engineers accidentally discovered oil in the area, and “Dig boy, dig” was what the English Engineer shouted as they found the legs of their elephants drenched in oil. This is the legend behind the name of the town, however, this is not likely to have been true. Digboi also has a notable Oil Museum that you can visit which has a fair amount of preserved machinery.
Location : Karnataka Who should visit : Ideal for history buffs and architecture students and those who appreciate details
Hampi is located in east-central Karnataka and is a six-hour drive from Belgaum. It was the capital of the 14th century Vijayanagara Empire, which was the world’s second-largest medieval city after Beijing. What is special about Hampi is that the preserved ruins include market complexes, townships, residential areas, tanks with unique hydraulic techniques, and a temple complex, this covers about 4,100 hectares of land.
A unique feature of the temples is the "Stone Chariot" which appears to have been of religious significance. Moreover, the ruins also include Queen’s Bath and the Elephants stable which is an adoption of Indo Islamic Architecture, speaking of the evolved multi-ethnic society. You can also ride interesting handmade boats which look like round handmade “tokris” made by straw, they are called “coracles”. You can ride this unique boat across the Tungabhadra River. Students are also likely to be awed by the caves formed naturally on the sides of the river.
4. Living Root Bridge
Location : Meghalaya Who should visit : For nature lovers, inventors, and creatives
A living root bridge is made from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees. These bridges are common in the southern part of Meghalaya. In the small Khasi town of Pynursla, India, a 50-meter bridge is the longest example of a living root bridge. The suspension bridge which is made by live trees through tree shaping is a unique sight and often not taught about in schools.
Therefore, it is an important thing to witness as it is a handmade bridge that is sometimes made without any help from man-made materials. However, it can also be held up by scaffolding until the roots grow and develop; these bridges look nothing short of a bridge from a fairytale. These bridges can be found in the West Jaintia Hills district and East Khasi Hills District.
5. The Hanging Pillar
Location : Andhra Pradesh Who should visit : For anyone who is interested in uncovering mysteries and for those who only believe in what they see.
In the 16 Century Veerabhadra temple called the Lepakshi temple, located in the Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh exists a “hanging pillar”. The temple is an architectural wonder as, among the 70 pillars in the temple, one pillar appears to be floating slightly above the ground. It is possible to pass a thin sheet of cloth or paper through the pillar which proves that it is not an optical illusion. The pillar is slightly dislodged from its original position as in the British era, a British Engineer is said to have tried to move the pillar in order to uncover the mystery behind this architectural wonder.
6. Shettihalli Rosary Church
Location : Karnataka Who should visit : Ideal for fans of Gothic-style architecture and people who love adventures
The Rosary Church is located 2 km from Shettihalli, Hassan, Karnataka, and it was built by French Missionaries in the 1860s. It is an excellent example of Gothic-style architecture and is reminiscent of many of the historical structures of Europe. The church is also known as the floating church or the submerged church. However, the main attraction for the church is that it is partially submerged in water from July to October, thus the church appears to be floating in the water. Why education trips.
Memories of school Educational trips are among the most prominent of the formative years, largely because they are a welcome break in the routine for both students and teachers. While their purpose is essentially to educate, they can also be a fun bonding experience for everyone involved.
Reinforcement
The trip can reinforce what a teacher has been instructing in class about a subject and help students understand the topic better.
Teachers turn trips into mobile classrooms, instructing students to collect data, then quizzing them or assigning a project based on what they learned during the outing.
Socialization
Taking students into a new environment gives them the experience of travelling in a group and teaches them to be respectful of the locations they visit.
Kids get to visit a place to which they have never been before. This can be particularly advantageous to students who are less fortunate and don’t have the opportunity to travel.
Students who go on Educational trips find that they want to learn more about the subjects on which the trip focused.
The type of memories that Educational trips create, called “episodic memories,” helps children retain information for longer periods.
Advantages of Educational trips?
Visiting the Historical places, watching wild life or asking a NASA Scientists about space travel are all possibilities for Educational trip excursions that are stimulating and educational. One issue that is reducing Educational trip opportunities is a lack of financial resources. Classrooms that are faced with budget restrictions should consider fund-raising programs or ask one of their school’s local business partners to donate a portion of the funds. Consider a tour of a local factory, restaurant or bank that would require only transportation and meal costs to create an affordable Educational trip and valuable community relations between businesses and students.
Real-World Experience
Educational trips provide an opportunity for total immersion in the natural environment and social setting. On such excursions, the student practices his social skills and critical thinking abilities outside of the controlled class setting. Being able to ask experts about their particular area of study on the spot requires thinking. He is able to learn real-world lessons.
Classroom Inspiration
A student who sees touches and smells historical relics, ancient artefacts and original sources of text becomes motivated to learn more in depth when he returns to the classroom. Educational trips stimulate learning beyond what textbooks and videos can provide to the learning environment. This is not to say that all Educational trips are equally stimulating, but those excursions that are well-designed result in higher levels of academic achievement in every subject of study. He is learning in an informal setting when on a Educational trip that is directed by professionally trained staff, such as at a museum or science centre. This allows all participants to learn without realizing it, which reaches more students from various learning backgrounds and styles.
Connection to Community
For low-income students or students who are new to the school, Educational trips that take advantage of local resources promote community connectivity. For example, a student may not ever have the opportunity to visit a local park or banks, which are important resources within a community for both the student and his family. Students from non-English-speaking families or who have recently moved to the community get the chance to learn about the local area with the guidance of their school, as well as share the information with their family when they return home.
Classroom Supplement
It’s important for instructors and school administrators to choose Educational trips that augment existing lesson plans and synchronize with classroom learning. An Educational trip that teachers choose for these reasons can serve to illustrate difficult concepts or extend the general natural of a classroom lesson by giving more specific information. The specialists who lead school groups on Educational trips also may be able to provide professional insight from advanced study or direct experience that teachers could never provide alone.
Before a Educational trip even takes place, it can begin to produce benefits for students. By not allowing students with behavioural or academic problems to participate in a Educational trip, teachers can encourage good behaviour and motivate students to work hard with the prospect of a Educational trip looming as a reward. Even the most informative Educational trips usually have an element of recreation, making them a time to unwind for all students.
Importance of Educational trips?
Going on an Educational trip means more than simply leaving the school grounds. Educational trips should always have a major educational element, but the impact of Educational trips can extend much further. The importance of Educational trips includes giving students the chance to build closer bonds with their classmates, experience new environments and enjoy a day away from the classroom
When students and teachers are together outside the classroom, new educational environments and experiences are possible. Students may have the opportunity to observe many things that are not available at school, including exotic wildlife, rare plants and maybe even the stars if the Educational trip is to a planetarium. Discussing the Educational trip beforehand is wise because it allows students to know what they will experience during their time away from school
Getting away from the everyday atmosphere of the classroom gives students an opportunity to spend time with each other in a new environment. They may be able to connect on more of a personal level without the structure of the normal school day. Students may be able to spend much of the Educational trip day in small groups, observing, chatting and learning about each other. Having an Educational trip in the early part of the term is wise, since it will allow students to bond with classmates they may not know very well.
Informal Learning Environment
Educational trips provide valuable educational opportunities away from the classroom, without using textbooks and other tools used in a normal school setting. Students on Educational trips can often learn while having fun in a more informal environment. If the Educational trip destination has staff members who do hands-on teaching with visiting students — such as at a science centre or historical museum — the children will be excited to learn from someone new
No matter how much students learn during a Educational trip, their favourite memories may be based on their enjoyment of the day. Getting away from school for a day or even half a day is always exciting for students, and Educational trips are always highly anticipated. Students will have fun with their friends and they also may return to the classroom with a renewed focus on their schoolwork.

Educational Tours: Learning Beyond Classrooms
In order to attract the schools and students alike, the agents try to work closely with the faculty and develop highly customised tours
The Covid-19 wave in India has led to the closure of educational institutions. For more than a year students have been taking classes from the four walls of their homes. The only kind of tour that they can take at the moment are virtual tours.
Flash back to 2019, when students had the world at their feet. Students from dozens of colleges and schools around the country would be dashing across the globe to different destinations as part of an educational tour organised by their educational institution, with the objective of learning about their field of study, interacting with students and faculties of other countries as well as to discover foreign cultures and destinations. This segment was amongst the fastest growing niches of the Indian tourism industry, until it all came to a screeching halt in early 2020 with the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic across the world.
In many ways, the 30-odd students of Symbiosis Skills & Professional University in Pune were extremely fortunate. It was late in October 2019 that they were taken on a week-long visit to the United Arab Emirates, notably Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as part of an educational tour organised by the college in collaboration with numerous institutions overseas.
Fortunate as this may have been one of the last school trips leaving from India to an overseas destination since the first signs of the severity of the coronavirus pandemic had already begun appearing in many parts of the world and countries were slowly, but certainly closing down on international travel in order to curb the spread.
About 30 students from Symbiosis Skills & Professional University in Pune, went for a weeklong educational trip to UAE, notably Dubai and Abu Dhabi, late in October 2019
And indeed, for the students, the trip turned out to be memorable in more ways than one. Japneet Singh Anand, one of the students, has vivid memories of the trip even today, almost 20 months later, more so because of what followed barely three months later.
“I have mesmerising memories of the trip. It was a unique experience for me to travel abroad with my friends, enjoying visits to the landmarks of the country, from Ferrari World, Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa and to learn about the Middle-east culture along with them,’’ Anand tells India Outbound .
But it was not all just fun. Anand says that the group visited a number of companies as well as educational institutions in Dubai to get an insight not just into the world of education in another country, but also in the world of business and economics. He says that the learning experience of the trip has been serving him in the good stead ever since, especially since he himself began working last year.
Educational tours as a segment of India outbound market have been growing at a rapid clip, year-on-year, for over a decade, ever since the Indian economy began booming in mid-2000s
“There were many things that we got to learn during the visit. For instance, I saw how various MNCs and institutions work as well as the daily retail operations of the big brands, their handling of HR, mall management, how efficient the companies are and the processes that they adopt for efficient and cost effective operations,” says Anand.
As he had already joined his father in the family’s retail business, Anand says he has been able to apply whatever he learnt on the trip. “These learnings have helped me in bringing new ideas into our daily operations and to make business levels more efficient. I believe that it also helped me in making decisions efficiently,” he says.
A booming segment
Educational tours are becoming increasingly important for India in part thanks to the poor quality of Indian education as it is almost entirely focused on classroom teaching with little practical application. It also helps that these tours are mainly popular amongst children from well-to-do families, which anyway travel overseas at least once a year. In addition, the cost per person is easily affordable for the targeted families. For instance, the week-long Symbiosis trip cost INR 68,000 per person, just over 10 pc of the total course fee for the 3-year course.
Little wonder then that educational tours as a segment of India outbound market have been growing at a rapid clip, year on year, for over a decade, ever since the Indian economy began booming in mid-2000s.
It is not just college-going students who venture overseas for such tours. Many top-notch institutions like the Delhi Public School (DPS), a large franchise of expensive, private schools, has been organising similar trips for its students as young as from the VIII standard, whose average age is 13-14 years. One such school sent its students to the United Kingdom as well as the United States on educational tours.
Each group comprises of anywhere between 15-25 students and an average trip costs about INR 100,000 per person. “When they go, they mainly visit historical sites. For example, in the UK, they generally visit London, the Parliament House and the Westminster Abbey. In terms of educational sites, our students also visit top notch places like the NASA in the United States,” says a teacher of DPS in Kolkata who is involved in organising these trips.
The educational institutions as well as the travel agents try to add a special and memorable element in each visit. One particular batch of DPS students was especially lucky. Their trip to the United Kingdom coincided with the cricket Champions Trophy which sees top national cricket teams from across the world vie for the title. The students were treated to watching one of the matches in the stadium on their visit, recounts the teacher.
Travel professionals get into the play
Recognising the potential of the niche, several tour operators in India began offering educational tours to various schools. Take for instance, the biggest player in the market, Thomas Cook India, which offers a special programme, Travel Quest. It offers highly customised study tours across a wide range of educational institutions, including schools and colleges, as well as management and technical institutes.
“Educational tourism has gained popularity over the course of the last few years as it offers students an exciting opportunity for learning beyond the traditional classroom setting. Travel is indeed the best teacher and such study tours offer students a two pronged benefit: a practical facet to their theoretical knowledge along with valuable global exposure,” Rajeev Kale, president & country head – Holidays, MICE, Visa, Thomas Cook (India), tells India Outbound.
He says that the tour itineraries are specifically designed by experts from Thomas Cook India and the faculty, to be fun and educational, while adhering to the precise requirements of the institution. With innovative activities that offer experiential hands-on learning opportunities, it aims to enhance theoretical knowledge with a practical global exposure. “With a range of experiences like behind-the-scene tours at theme parks, chocolate/cheese making lessons, interactions with rocket-scientists at a space centre in USA/Europe, and more, the Travel Quest programme has already forayed into institutes focusing on specialisation in architecture, management, food & beverage, engineering, automobiles, languages, and more,” adds Kale.
Educational institutions as well as the travel agents try to add a special and memorable element in each visit
The agents say that most of the educational tours involve Class XII and higher. The key source markets are no longer limited to the four metropolitan cities, but also include numerous Tier II or even Tier III cities. “Our key source markets include Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi and Ahmedabad. Apart from these, we have also successfully expanded our reach to Tier II cities as well, having successfully undertaken group bookings from Vijayawada, Rajkot, Shimla, Madurai, Mangalore and Guntur,” says Kale.
In order to attract the schools and students alike, the agents try to work closely with the faculty and develop highly customised tours on the basis of the specific requirements of the institution. Kale says that innovative itineraries curated by the Travel Quest team incorporate unique experiential as well as hands-on learning opportunities, coupled with fun elements.
For the agents, educational institutions and specially for the students, no destination is too far, too complicated or too expensive. Thomas Cook says it has covered destinations as diverse as South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, USA and of course Europe. “School students enjoy a fun way of learning with inclusions like behind-the-scene tours at Singapore Zoo, BMW factory in Munich, chocolate or cheese making lessons in Switzerland, learning traditional Muay Thai Boxing in Bangkok, dance session on famous K-pop music in Seoul, interactions with rocket-scientists at a space centre in USA and Europe,” says Kale.
Destinations discover demand
Most destinations, especially those with a footprint in India, have begun recognising the current demand as well as future potential of this highly lucrative segment of outbound tourism. They are now trying their best to capture this segment that is especially attractive due to the age group of the target audience. The destinations realise that if someone visits a country as a student at a very young age, she is likely to form a life-long bond with the destination and hence they are increasingly going out of their way to receive educational tours from India.
Sheetal Munshaw, director of French tourism body, Atout France, in India is frank about it. “It is not for nothing that they say ‘catch them young!’. Students are opinion makers of tomorrow. Besides their alma mater will always stay close to their heart and these very students will be future ambassadors of France and its myriad tourism offerings. They will play the role of influencers towards their own circle of friend and family and result in creating aspiration to travel to France,” Munshaw tells India Outbound .
Moreover, destinations are banking on children who have visited on an educational tour to be an influencer for their families. “Even as it stands at their young age, children especially in India are a very important criterion in the selection of holiday destinations as Indians tend to travel as families,” she says.
Travel agents say for the sector to revive it would be crucial for destinations to set out clear rules regarding quarantine and health and hygiene conditions in various countries
To promote educational tours, Atout France says it has worked with sister French organisations like the network of Alliance Françaises in India to reach out to an audience of Francophones and Francophiles who have a natural affinity for France and who would most certainly love to discover the country as students of the language.
“We also collaborate with Campus France with the objective of reaching out to students who are travelling to France for further studies. The idea here is to showcase France’s touristic assets to these students. We are also very open to collaborating with schools who plan educational trips and counsel them on itineraries that make for an educative yet entertaining discovery of France,” says Munshaw.
Besides India’s very young population as about 450 million Indians are millennials, overseas tourism bodies are also enthused by the active engagement of leading travel professionals in this segment as a there has been a surge in travel professionals dedicated to organising student travel as well as larger tour operators dedicating departments to this specific segment that they see as a testimony to the demand pre-pandemic as well as the potential that this segment represents, post-pandemic.
Munshaw also points out that during the pandemic, the only category of Indians who have been able to get visas and travel are students as this was the only non-repatriation or imperious reason mobility that was authorised.
She says that this focus on promoting educational tours and attracting students will continue long after the pandemic is gone. “France has a very diverse tourist offering and is an ideal destination to combine the aspect of exploring a country and its culture, cuisine and language and acquiring a skill given the slew of domains in which France stands out as a force to reckon with be it aviation, wine and food, art de vivre, fashion, ski, sports et al. Given that our offering is befitting and the demand has been on a gradual upswing with Indian parents eager to expose their children to international cultures and skill sets we will lay more emphasis on this segment in times to come,” she says.
Travel agents are also very enthusiastic about the future of the segment. But they add that for the segment to revive at the earliest after the pandemic is behind us, it would be crucial for destinations to set out clear rules regarding quarantine and health and hygiene conditions in various countries.
“Basic easing of travel restrictions, while health-hygiene will continue to be of paramount importance to travellers’, we look forward to corresponding direct point-to-point flights for travel in the ‘new normal’. Quarantine protocols will also have an impact on the travellers choice of destination and hence we look forward to support from the destinations in laying down a roadmap for educational tours,” says Kale.
As and when educational institutions reopen in India and other parts of the world and once travel becomes a bit more normal, with borders reopened, it would not take a bright student to guess the direction that educational tours would take and the pace with which it would return to pre-pandemic normalcy.

How travelling enriches cultural understanding in education | Explained
E ducation extends beyond the walls of a classroom, and the impact of travel on a student's understanding of the world is unparalleled. In recent discussions, several educational leaders have emphasised the profound role that travel plays in shaping a student's cultural awareness and global perspective.
Travelling plays a significant role in enriching cultural understanding in education. Educational leaders and experts have highlighted numerous insights into how travel enhances cultural understanding.
At JBCN International School in Mumbai, Principal, KV Arjun Rao believes that travel is a pivotal component of a child's education. "It's not merely about planning trips; it's about nurturing an appreciation for diverse experiences and cultures," Rao states.
He emphasises that regardless of age, travel leaves an enduring impression on students, fostering a lifelong passion for exploration and learning.
Travel provides firsthand experiences that cannot be replicated in a classroom. It exposes students to diverse cultures, traditions, languages, and ways of life, fostering experiential learning that goes beyond textbooks.
CULTURAL IMMERSION
Being immersed in a different culture allows students to interact with locals, try new foods, participate in customs, and observe daily life. This immersion helps break stereotypes, fosters empathy, and encourages tolerance and appreciation for diversity.
CULTURAL COMPETENCE
Through exposure to diverse cultures, students develop cultural competence - the ability to interact and work effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. This skill is crucial in an increasingly diverse and globalised workforce.
"The best education I have received is through travel," Rao underscores the transformative power of firsthand cultural experiences, said Aishwarya Rao, Director of the Vivekalaya Group of Institutions.
She emphasises that travel offers an immersive learning experience, showcasing the coexistence of vastly different civilisations.
LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Travelling often involves exposure to different languages. Being in an environment where a different language is spoken can accelerate language learning and understanding, encouraging students to communicate beyond their native tongue.
It presents students with new and unfamiliar situations, encouraging them to think critically and solve problems in real-time. Negotiating cultural differences and adapting to new environments foster resilience and adaptability.
PERSONAL GROWTH
Traveling can lead to personal growth by pushing students out of their comfort zones and building confidence, independence, and resilience. It encourages self-reflection and a deeper understanding of one's own identity in the wider world.
Educational leaders often advocate incorporating travel and cultural exchange programmes into educational curricula. These experiences complement traditional classroom learning, enrich students' perspectives, and contribute to the development of well-rounded, globally aware individuals capable of navigating an increasingly interconnected world.

Wayanad DTPC to promote bamboo rafting and kayaking in River Kabani around Kuruva Island
Wayanad: The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is all set to promote bamboo rafting and kayaking in the Kabani River around Kuruva Island to attract more tourists to the destination. The initiative is for reactivating the tourism industry in the region as the forest department had closed down Kuruva Island on directions from the High Court on February 17, this year. The closure has resulted in a dent in the revenue of local people who depend on the industry to eke out a living. A team of officials headed by District Collector Dr Renu Raj and DTPC secretary K G Ajesh visited the Kuruva islands recently to have an on-ground feel of the possibilities of bamboo rafting in the River Kabani around the island.
At present, bamboo rafts and wooden boats are used to ferry tourists to the island crossing the water body. With more custom-made rafts made available, tourists can sail around the island in the rafts on an hourly basis, thus exploring the serene nature in a better way, it was pointed out. After the visit, District Collector Dr Renu Raj told reporters that there are large numbers of tourists who love water sports including kayaking and rafting. “The Kuruva Islands are ideal for bamboo rafting, and there are many experts in bamboo rafting among the staff in the centre,” she said. “The vast as well as calm water body is ideal for bamboo rafting,” she added. “Being eco-friendly, there will not be any opposition from the forest department against inducting bamboo rafting in the ecologically sensitive water body,” she pointed out.
Project launch in the next season The Kuruva Eco-tourism project is managed jointly by the forest department and DTPC. The District Collector also assured the women of Kudumbasree units of the locality who were employed in the project, that the district administration would ensure all steps for the opening of the tourism project. Kuruva can be accessed from both Mananthavadi and Pulppalli. DTPC member secretary KG Ajesh told media personnel that the DTPC would launch the project from the next tourism season soon after the monsoon. “Trials have been already on,” he said. The closure of the Kuruva Island for tourists has badly hit hundreds of families that depend on the tourism sector to eke out a living,” he pointed out.
Moves are afoot by the tourism fraternity and district administration to open Kuruva Island as there were sufficient summer rains in the forest regions of the district and the threat of wildlife attack is over. A protected river delta rich in flora and fauna, the Kuruva Island is a unique cluster of islets in River Kabani. The closure of the island was a sequel to the series of wildlife attacks on human beings and three deaths in a row that rocked the district in one month. V P Paul, an employee of the Kuruva Eco Development Committee, which manages the tourism activities under the forest department, was also killed in the attack of an elephant herd. Every year the forest department used to close down Kuruva Island during the peak of summer, for a few days as a pre-emptive measure to check the spread of forest fires."
