Just a couple weeks after the producers asked for patience , there is finally news on the release of the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy .

Today the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy showed up on the “Coming Soon” tab for Netflix Kids, listing Monday, July 1 for the release. TrekMovie has confirmed this with CBS Studios. However, we were not yet able to confirm if the release will include all 20 episodes of season 2 . The listing on Netflix also includes a new synopsis:

Now Starfleet trainees, Dal and his friends embark on another adventure to solve the mystery of the Protostar and save the planet from destruction.

Season 2 of Prodigy will feature the return of Star Trek: Voyager’s Robert Picardo as the Holographic Doctor, now serving on the new USS Voyager-A under the command of Vice Admiral Janeway. The Doctor will be tasked with minding the new trainees Dal R’El, Rok-Tahk, Zero, and Jankom Pog along with their Melenoid slime worm companion Murf.

Earlier this year Picardo had high praise for the Prodigy  writers and their approach to his character…

“What’s wonderful about the writing of the show is that they maintain what I love most about doing  Voyager  itself, which was I could be a comic relief, but on a dime I could turn and it could get quite serious when it was a dire situation. [ Prodigy ] used me for comic relief, believe me, in a lot of scenes, in a lot of episodes. But there are some dramatic moments which was really a pleasure to do as well.”

Gwyn will still be a big part of the show in season 2. She has a mission of her own, to save her people the Vau N’Akat on the planet Solum.

The first season of Prodigy  wrapped up on Paramount+ in December 2022. Season 1 was re-released worldwide on Netflix last Christmas after Paramount+ removed the series in the summer of 2023. Netflix previously announced that season 2 would arrive in 2024 and today is the first time there has been a specific date. In March all 20 episodes were unexpectedly released early on French TV (dubbed in French).

We are awaiting more details and the release of preview images or possibly even a trailer. A clip from season 2 was released by CBS last summer .

Oh cool, I didn’t expect any more Trek for a long while.

I liked the first season although it lost something when it became too Voyager. Was never a fan of Voyager so not sure how I feel about this. We’ll see.

I’m the opposite, the more Voyager the better. Bring it on if you ask me.

How does this work for Canada? It is usually shown on CTV Sci Fi and is not on Netflix here currently.

We will be following up with more info including international release for those countries outside the current Netflix countries. This includes Eastern European countries with SkyShowtime and Canada with CTVScifi

In Canada, it used to be that Star Trek shows were on CTV (a network) and Crave (a streaming service), both of which are owned by Bell Media. Now the only way to watch Prodigy is via CTV, which I think requires a cable TV subscription; there’s no streaming service that carries it. Any chance this might change…?

You can use a VPN to make your device look like it’s in the US. I recommend Surfshark, IP Vanish or Express VPN. I use Surfshark. I watch Netflix from the US, London, UK or Budapest, Hungary.All from the comfort of my home from the GTA. (Greater Traffic Area..)

So far, season 1 is still available on CRAVE. I haven’t seen anything in the listings for CTV Sci-Fi or CRAVE regarding season 2 yet. I’m in Montreal, so I will check the Videotron guide to see if the Prodigy season 2 is listed in the guide at that time. But I think I can only look 2 weeks ahead.

This is very very exciting!

I just watched season one for the first time literally a month ago and I was so impressed with this show. I adored practically everything about it; especially having Janeway back. But all the new characters were great and enjoyed all their arcs Dal went from my least favorite to favorite after the first half of the season.

Other than Picard season 3, this is the only other show in NuTrek I have truly loved. Hopefully we will see more Voyager characters along the way

As far as more legacy characters showing up, I am 100% convinced at least one more Voyager character will appear, even if it’s just a cameo or something. But they have said there will be another major legacy character involved in the season outside the Doctor and not from Voyager. So most likely TNG or (hopefully) DS9.

And I’m also happy to see you can post your thoughts without feeling harassed over it as you were but I will digress on that. Most people here are actually very open, friendly and civil, but yes like yourself, VERY passionate lol.

Yes it is really nice to be enjoying another show outside of Picard. But I didn’t watch it because I thought it was bad, but simply not for me being geared to young children. But you and others were so right, it really does speak to adults as much as kids. I just appreciate it’s telling authentic Star Trek stories again. I know the others try but I have other issues with them beyond just that.

I would truly love anyone from TNG or DS9. I was actually a bit irked we didn’t get anyone from DS9 at all on Picard. I didn’t expect Odo for obvious reasons even though the season dealt with the changelings, but Kira or Bashir popping up would’ve been fabulous. Let’s hope we get another shot on Prodigy!

And yes everyone has been super lovely outside of that one individual I won’t name; just happy they are gone. But I haven’t had an issue with anyone else and have always had pleasant conversations, even when we do disagree from time to time. As you said, we are all passionate and sometimes resolute in our opinions; but that’s no excuse to be a bully to others because you can’t handle a difference of opinion that’s frankly been said many times over by others anyway. If you can’t have a civil conversation without getting so triggered over it, just keep scrolling. But I want to reiterate, this has been a great board to pop my head in from time to time to give a few random opinions and talk to you lovely people the last few months. :)

And I haven’t really posted here or other boards much lately anyway since I decided not to watch Discovery this season (but really hoped you and others liked it) and there haven’t been a lot of other things that have interested me. This show definitely has my attention now though.

Sadly that’s so much of the Internet these days so we’re all used to it but this board is very small as it is and it’s sad when someone new comes along who has never bothered anyone and is treated that way really bothered me. I’m guessing all the shouting and meltdowns over shows and movies we have here probably keep most new people away as it is lol. But it’s different when you are being harassed or attacked for simply having an opinion.

And most of the strife has mostly been over Discovery IMO. Passions just run very high on that show on either side. But the irony is the last season has been an absolute delight to discuss lol. Seriously, very little fighting has happened over it. There are still people who hate it as others who love it but very little infighting or trolling over it

Part of it has to do with certain personalities finally being banned who kept all the silly fights going in the first place as you experienced yourself, but there has just been a lot less people talking about the show overall for some reason and more people seem to generally like the season including me. That always helps lol. All in all it was actually a pretty tame, chill and frankly a dull place at times to discuss the show for a change.

Now that’s it’s over these boards will probably take a turn for the better overall since the other current shows are just more well liked or just less bitterness over them lol. Prodigy is one of those shows that gets 50 posts on a GOOD week discussing an episode and there is very little strife over it. People obviously disagree here and there but it’s a pretty easy going show to discuss so can’t wait. Prodigy brings more good vibes!

And definitely would love to see Kira or Bashir. Anyone from DS9 would be a plus. Give me 10 episodes with Brunt and I won’t complain lol.

And I’m very happy you enjoyed this season of Discovery. I haven’t read any of the articles or the comments about the season so not sure how others felt about it. Someone I talk to on FB watched it and it sounds like she liked it too and she’s not a big fan of the show either. I did watch a YouTube video discussing the finale yesterday to see how they handled the Progenitors. It sounded fine but not something I need to watch personally. But I hope its fans enjoyed the ending.😊

But I’m still in the middle of my Enterprise rewatch I started a month ago and currently on season 3. By the time I finish Prodigy may have already started!

So a good way to pass the time along until it gets here. 😄

And I would have no problems if Brunt joined the show lol. Jeffrey Combs is a Star Trek treasure.

LOL thanks. And yes very excited about Prodigy. I really had no idea how I would ultimately feel about this season of Discovery considering I haven’t been a big fan of the last four lol. And while it did come out a little better as I hoped, it still wasn’t a complete home run either. But I felt it did just enough to feel it ended OK at least and that’s really all I can ask for at this point. I still have zero interest to rewatch it anytime soon though.

With Prodigy my expectations are much much higher because I trust the people who make that show 100%. They knocked it out of the park in the first season and I imagine it will be just as solid next season as well.

And enjoy your Enterprise marathon. Although I know you didn’t watch Discovery this season I know you’re obviously aware about the big reveal in the finale and one of the reasons why I liked it so much. Just a cool tie in although I know others are more mixed on the revelation. Not me, I thought it was great and I just love how it basically bookends Enterprise and Discovery together. :)

What I love about Prodigy is that they didn’t change the legacy characters so much that they were unrecognizable. They feel like a plausible continuation of the characters.

I’m rewatching S1 now and it’s so much fun. These writers can put in so much story in 23 minutes and it works. I can’t wait for S2. I’m hoping for a S3 or maybe a TV or theatrical movie.

Yay! Have Anthony & Laurie talked about how they are going to review the season if they are all dropped at once? Like maybe 2 per week or something like that?

I hope they at least have a little break between batches of episodes. Dropping all 20 would be ridiculous. They’d be gobbled up in a flash and fan conversations wouldn’t be as fun.

I prefer this format. Having the freedom to choose when/how to watch each episode is a gift. Specially with Prodigy!

I feel like 10 episode releases with a short break a la Bridgerton is getting plenty. We all benefit from being able to talk about these shows on relatively the same timeline. Watching a show on my own time is fine, but I enjoy talking about them as they happen. With Netflix shows it’s always a case of, “OMG did you see episode 6 yet? No? Oh. Okay, well let me know when you get there!” or “Oh man I’m not there yet! Bummer.” The immediacy of conversations is stifled a bit. I find the majority of people gobble up binge shows like candy in one big bender, and everyone from the fans to the creators doing publicity chatters excitedly for maybe a month… and then the audience moves on to the next content that must be consumed. Binge models lead to longer hiatuses too. Even beyond Ted Sarandos’ inane comments, I lament what Netflix has done to the industry more than the convenient disruptions it has pioneered.

I assume TrekMovie will stagger reviews for episodes that have come out and it could become a big jumble of different schedules.

I’m hoping they at least divide the season up and we get 10 in July and maybe the other 10 in September or something. Give people wanting more. But don’t space it out too much. I really feel a big reason the show failed on P+ is because after they dropped the first half of the season, it took a full year to get the second half and most people (especially kids) just moved on by then.

Precisely, this is what modern animators don’t seem to understand. Kids grow up fast, which means you need to get the content to them quickly. In thine olden times there use to be 65 episodes spread over 13 weeks to tell the show’s story. If it was really successful it would get an order for the next year.

I’m of the opposite opinion. I hope they drop the entire season so that it can be binged. That seems to be the dominant strategy at Netflix.

I get it. And Prodigy’s team are going to be delighted it’s being seen at all and supported. It just would be nice if it were over the span of 20 weeks at a decent ebb.

This show is really great with the addition of the Voyager characters. Can’t wait to see The Doctor.

More Voyager please!

I wish that I could muster-up the level of enthusiasm the show’s biggest boosters (saluting you, Tiger 2) have for it, but I’m happy for them and will certainly be checking it out myself. From my perspective it’s fine for what it is: a children’s show set in the Trek universe. There’s nothing at all wrong with that in principle, and the best Pixar outings can easily transcend the demographic they’re pitched to accommodate. It’s just not particularly what I come to Star Trek for.

And speaking of Pixar, whatever reservations I have about Prodigy — man, is it gorgeous to look at. Many years ago, before TAS premiered, I remember Roddenberry boasting that the level of animation at Filmation Studios was on a par with Disney. . . a claim that, to be generous, was pretty generous. But that the level of cinematography and production design in Prodigy often compares favorably with feature films is just what you happen to see on the screen. It’s stellar work.

I laughed pretty hard over that first sentence.

And at the end of the day, you gave it a chance and it’s not really your thing. That’s all anyone can ask for. And yes, if nothing else, the show is stunningly beautiful to look at. Why it’s disappointing it didn’t reach the original target audience as it was meant to; or not as many as Paramount hoped I guess. Maybe it will have a better shot being on Netflix.

We’ll now know soon!

In regards to the visual quality, I agree it’s stunning to see. And it’s even more impressive considering it’s apparently about half as expensive to make compared to other animated shows (according to what the Hagemans have said), and they were working during the height of the pandemic which would have created certain hurdles getting it done.

Well…my patience died a couple weeks ago, but maybe I should have tried to be just a tiny bit more patient to begin with, because I am surprised Netflix isn’t waiting until December like I was thinking they were going to. So, this month The Acolyte, and next month Prodigy!

Even if they do drop them all at once, I will be watching one per week.

Alright, maybe two or three per week.

This is great news to have confirmed at last. Now the big question for me is will season 2 get a physical blu-ray/DVD release later down the line? Netflix are very against this, but Paramount are for it. Wonder which way it will go.

Not saying it’s a guarantee, but Netflix shows that were produced by outside studios have gotten physical releases. The Crown and Narcos come to mind.

I hope they release all 20 eps at once. The once-a-week thing is getting tiring…

If this ends up being the last season, as I’m suspecting it will be, I hope they get a chance to wrap things up.

I was thrilled to see this yesterday. After all that the show went through, and all the waiting for a release date, it’s great to finally know we’re in the home stretch. I loved this show. The biggest surprise of the modern era for me (though Lower Decks was a close second in that regard). So excited to see what’s in store for season 2. I’ve been hearing nothing but great things from those who’ve seen it (and thankfully no spoilers either).

YAY!! The wait is over. PROD rocks!!!

Netflix typically releases episodes all at once. So we’ll probably either get all 20 on July 1, or get the first ten then and get the second half at a later date.

YES! Definitely keeping my Netflix subscription. CANT WAIT FOR SEASON 2! Seeing the Doc again will bring a tear to my eye I bet.

The Doctor was one of my 2 favorite Voyager characters (hard to choose between him and Seven), so I’m thrilled we’re getting him back. And I could easily imagine him being great on Prodigy, with these writers. He should have great interactions with everyone, including very likely having scenes with Janeway.

Yes I love the Doctor so much as well. I was hoping he showed up on Picard at some point but sadly not to be. But this is actually better because he will be a full time character and back on another Voyager with Janeway! I can’t wait for their scenes together. That’s music to my ears.

Yep the Doctor is one of my favorite characters as well. I was so happy to hear he’s coming back on this show.

I’m ecstatic with all the Voyager love we’re getting on this show. And it’s so great how accurate canon has been on it. They have honored the Star Trek universe well.

Good news, time for a rewatch of season one.

We’re getting our beloved Prodigy back in less than a month and I can’t wait! Absolutely love this show. We have to show up in force and let Netflix know we want a third season!

This show and LDS is what I’m excited to see this year! It’s great to have them back even if it’s their final seasons.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Series Finale Review — “Life, Itself”

We begin right where we left off in “Lagrange Point,” as Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin Green) emerges into the Progenitor’s realm: a seemingly endless space filled with floating walkways that reach to the horizons and windows leading to other worlds.

It’s sleek and high-tech, but there are natural elements as well. It’s very cool looking and well designed, and aesthetically and mechanically it immediately feels like a videogame. I don’t say this as a criticism — I spend a lot of time playing and enjoying video games — just that it’s where my mind went.

Burnham’s fights with one of the Breen who first entered the portal (and later Moll), using wind-gust-enabled super jumps and the strange gravity of the place only reinforced that impression for me. It’s the first time in my many decades of watching Star Trek that I’ve thought, “This is a video game!” It’s after this elaborate fight that takes Burnham and Moll (Eve Harlow) from the “lobby” through to other worlds and back again that the two finally settle on a truce — if they’re focused on fighting each other, neither of them are ever going to get out of here, much less find and activate the Progenitors’ technology.

Outside the portal, Discovery watches as the Breen dreadnought quickly recovers from its skewering to be a threat again, both the ship itself and also the swarm of small fighters it launches.

Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) wants to be able do it all — stay near the portal, keep the dreadnought away from the portal, keep those fighters at bay, try to communicate with and/or recover Burnham, and stay alive and in the area for when Tahal arrives in a dreadnought of her own — but realizes that he’s got one too many things on his plate. He’s going to need to drop one if he wants to keep everyone alive.

With the opportunity to kill multiple fighters with one detonated plasma cloud too good to pass up, Rayner decides he can’t afford to keep Discovery near the portal. Book (David Ajala) and Culber (Wilson Cruz) of all people — who insists against Stamets’ objections that he needs to come along — stay behind in a shuttle to guard the Progenitor portal.

Meanwhile, Saru (Doug Jones) and Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) are doing their part to defuse the situation as well. Talking to Tahal while he heads to the black holes at high warp, Saru offers her an exclusive trade route in exchange for her turning back from Ruhn’s dreadnought. When she declines, Saru goes in for the kill, calling her a coward and telling her he knows about her secret bases in that same stretch of space. If she doesn’t turn back now the Federation will destroy those bases and will start a war with the Breen.

He’s later described as ‘Action Saru’ again, but really this is Predator Saru. “Look into my eyes and tell me I’m not serious.” Oh he is, and she turns away, leaving just a small cloaked (but detected) scout ship in the area.

Saru’s shuttle, and Book’s as well, saw the NX-02’s distractingly-flashy bridge lighting and said “Hold my Romulan ale.” I already wasn’t a fan of that shuttle design (why is it so empty and cavernous inside?) but now that they’ve added a huge panel of pulsating lights that sits right in the middle of the frame I really don’t care for it.

Combine this with director Olatunde Osunsanmi’s decision to film much of Saru’s scene through a constantly moving sea of flashes and streaks and what looks like rippled, warped plexiglass, and I found parts of the sequence to be visually unpleasant.

Back in the portal, Burnham and Moll have finally found the Progenitors’ technology. The console is simple, just a surface with nine moveable triangles on it. Burnham shares the final clue (or riddle, really) with Moll, that they need to make the one between the many. Moll interprets this one way, but Burnham’s not so sure. Not wanting to wait any longer, Moll knocks Burnham out and gets to work at the controls. Oops, her solution is wrong, and things start to hit the fan.

I understand how and why the five scientists created tests of ethical and moral fortitude to safeguard the Progenitors’ technology — and ensure that only someone trustworthy would be able to find and access it — but the fact that they added one last obstacle that entirely hinges on just how literally someone is going to be with an abstract riddle is a little strange. Moll’s solution, to make a solid triangle with the pieces, is perfectly reasonable; any “chosen one” of otherwise impeccable character who had passed all the other tests could easily have made the same mistake without any bearing on their worthiness to wield Excalibur, as it were.

I know we’re supposed to see that Moll is being punished for her impatience, but really it seems like a flip of the coin whether the “good” person is or isn’t going to pick the right solution to an open-ended riddle. “Ah, so close, we think you’re great… but it’s actually a young woman instead of an old crone so we’re going to have to kill you now.”

Moll’s incorrect usage of the console kicks it into life, but in what appears to be an uncontrolled way. Outside in space, the portal starts drawing energy (and mass) from one of the black holes, pulling it closer and closer to the event horizon and threatening to destabilize the system.

From his shuttle, Book struggles to get a tractor lock on the portal, but Culber comes to the unlikely rescue. In a moment of epiphany which seems almost magical, he pulls a precise harmonic frequency out of the ether and it works, allowing the shuttle to hold the portal in place and stop its fall.

Was this a moment of divine inspiration? A glimpse of the universe telling Culber its secrets? Well, no, it’s actually just a surfaced memory from his Trill zhian’tara experience with Jinaal, who’d found himself in the same scenario 800 years prior. While this is a perfectly good, logical explanation for Culber’s actions in the moment, is that really it for his larger story arc? Has Culber been dipping his toe into existential questions of religious faith all season because of one nagging Trill memory, or is there more to it?

It feels as if the show wanted something bigger and grander and more mystical to be happening, and then remembered at the last minute that this is Star Trek and we don’t do that here. If this was a plotline I cared more about I would be disappointed with its conclusion, but as it is my response is just a big “Okay.”

Even with the Breen fighters destroyed, the dreadnought — and Tahal’s lingering scout ship — are still a big problem, so Rayner comes up with an equally big solution. Separating Discovery’s saucer and the drive sections and maneuvering them into position on either side of the dreadnought, he essentially uses the ship a huge pattern enhancer, “beaming” the dreadnought to the galactic barrier by initiating a spore jump between Discovery’s two sections. It’s crazy, it looks cool, and it works.

It’s also a harbinger of how Discovery is going to address the other of its two big storylines: simply erasing it from the board.

Inside the portal, Burnham regains consciousness, removes Moll from where she’s been stuck to the console, and comes up with the correct configuration of the little triangles (negative space triangle instead of Moll’s positive space one)… and a Progenitor (Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama) appears.

This is it, the moment the entire season has been leading up to, and it is suitably profound. We watch Burnham have a conversation with someone who’s been dead for four billion years about the nature of life itself, and the revelation that the Progenitors didn’t create this technology — but instead found it just the way Burnham has — hints at the existence of (a) God and also makes me want to play through the Mass Effect trilogy again.

There’s a wrinkle in all of this, though: according to the Progenitor, for completing the quest to access the technology, Burnham is the person who can it. That’s a lot. It’s, understandably, too much. She doesn’t have to use it now, she can come back later, but she cannot, it seems, hand this off to someone else within the Federation. It cannot be a collective venture, it is power for Burnham to wield alone.

And so, she decides to destroy it.

Her reasoning for not wanting to use the technology is valid — and strongly Star Trek . We already have infinite diversity in infinite combinations, and thus we don’t have need for the power of creation. There’s nothing that needs to be added. That works for me as an overarching explanation for why Burnham doesn’t start spinning up new planets for fun.

We know from the Progenitor that the technology can’t really bring people back from the dead — sorry L’ak! — but maybe it can cure disease? Solve any lingering scarcity problems? Something else noble and positive and exhilarating? As Stamets  (Anthony Rapp) excitedly announces, it represents the most significant scientific discovery of their lifetimes.

From a storytelling perspective, the decision not to use — and in this case going even further and deciding to destroy — the Progenitors’ technology is kind of the only choice they have. If the technology is really as powerful as it seems, it comes with the thorny side affect of either solving all plots before they exist or making all plots about itself. It’s not uncommon for television shows to introduce notably powerful characters or objects and then, once their immediate dramatic purpose is fulfilled, de-power or defuse them.

Sending the spore drive into the 32nd century where it can’t “bother” any of the rest of Star Trek ’s long history of traditional warp drive is a perfect example of doing just that. But Stamets is also right in his disappointment, this is a scientifically unsatisfying conclusion and one that, the more I think about it, becomes a narratively unsatisfying one as well.

What are we doing here narratively if, after all the effort to get there (both in-universe but also in the crafting of the story itself) we end up at “Eh, never mind!” after 30 seconds of thought? A story is much more than its ending, but if, as this one was, it’s a story predicated on solving a puzzle and finding an answer, it does need a meaningful conclusion of some sort to be satisfying.

If the presence of the Progenitors’ technology was really such a problem for the story, maybe the writers should have chosen a different puzzle to solve in the first place. Instead, it seems as if Discovery is saying that yes, all jokes aside, the enormous godlike power and incredible scientific breakthroughs really are the friends we made along the way.

This is not the first time Star Trek has shown its characters, who are otherwise on a mission of exploration and the pursuit of knowledge, decide to turn away from that knowledge because gaining it is simply too dangerous. Captain Janeway does just that in “The Omega Directive,” stating that it would be “arrogant” and “irresponsible” to “risk half the quadrant to satisfy [their] curiosity” about the Omega molecule, the most powerful substance known to exist at the time.

But that was one installment of episodic television, not the conclusion to a highly serialized season-long arc, and the Omega molecule remains in existence as something that can be studied at a later date. Not to mention, the central purpose of the story is the discussion of scientific ethics. It’s not an afterthought, it’s front and center and characters spend time debating it.

The Breen have been dispatched with, the Progenitors’ technology is gone, Moll is in custody, and the Red Directive is over. Things are settling back down, so it’s time now for the epilogue, tying things up for our characters and the series as a whole.

And then it turns out that Kovich (David Cronenberg) is actually Daniels , the futuristic temporal agent who visited Captain Archer throughout the four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise ! I never thought we’d hear about this guy ever again! His time-traveling ways explain a lot about his collection of era-spanning relics, his knowledge of centuries of Starfleet history, and his love of black outfits. (I asked for a bit more background to flesh out Kovich, and the  Discovery writing team certainly delivered, dang.)

Several weeks later, Saru and T’Rina (Tara Rosling) are having lovely beachside wedding. Saru’s wedding attire is gorgeous, T’Rina’s is suitably bizarre — Vulcan’s are, for all their claims of logic, big fans of “more is more” when it comes to women’s fashion and we love them for it — and everyone’s in a good mood at the reception discussing their future plans. It sounds like Rayner (who survived, thank you!) is getting roped into a mentorship role at Starfleet Academy, and Burnham and Book are officially back together.

They talk of the future and literally walk off into the sunset together as they head toward whatever the next mission brings. The end… wait, that wasn’t the epilogue? There’s more? Why is there more? That was a perfect ending!

ONE LAST DANCE

The show jumps decades into the future, as we find a grey-haired Burnham and Book living a semi-retired life on the red-forested planet first visited back in “That Hope is You, Part 1.” Book has planted the last bit of Kweijanian World Root, Burnham is good at mending fences from interloping space deer… and then their grown son, a Starfleet captain, arrives to ferry Admiral Burnham to another Red Directive mission.

I’ll be blunt, I really don’t think show needed this epilogue. It was fine — nothing that happened was terrible — but it seemed completely unnecessary for the episode, the season, and the series as a whole. Watching the pair walk down the beach wondering what the future holds would have been a perfectly satisfying ending, leaving viewers with the hint that the exploration of the galaxy will go on, and that our characters will be the ones doing it, but without creating an unrealized cliffhanger.

Instead, we get a 20-minute setup for 2018’s “Calypso.” Really? The Short Trek that had already been given a perfectly satisfying nod earlier in the season when Zora asked if seeing Burnham and Rayner in the disastrous future was another dream — not to mention that many viewers around the world never even saw “Calypso” thanks to the limited Paramount+ distribution at the time, and minimal DVD release outside of North America.

Yes, there is more to the epilogue than that, but none of what we see is particularly unexpected, nor does it really tie up any loose ends. Burnham and Book live happily ever after? That was implied by them walking away together on the beach, thanks. Tilly (Mary Wiseman) teaches at the Academy still, decades later? Okay cool. Starfleet continues to cycle through new uniforms? Got it.

Burnham sits in the captain’s chair one last time to send Zora (Annabelle Wallis) and an un-refitted (antefitted?) Discovery off to sit somewhere so an 18-minute Short Trek from six years ago can occur, she drifts off into memories of her time aboard Discovery — and then shifts into a recollection of the crew that has the unfortunate feel of someone with dementia recalling people they used to know, but can’t quite remember the context for anymore.

It’s clear that this was not a memory of an actual occurrence, but instead Burnham’s mind lining up her former crew for one last mental goodbye, everyone laughing at jokes that no one’s told, bathed in glowy golden light, sharing hugs that don’t feel rooted in any real event. The whole thing goes on far too long and feels incredibly strange.

Burnham just talked with Tilly last week, why is she remembering their younger selves saying goodbye to one another? Is Discovery , the ship, being put out to pasture, or is Burnham?

OBSERVATION LOUNGE

• Fan-predicted things that did NOT happen this episode: none of the notable Discovery characters were killed, L’ak was not revived, and Book did not use the Progenitor’s technology to restore the Kwejian homeworld.
• This episode’s opening credit sequence includes elements from all four prior seasons of the show. A spacesuit helmet , Klingon weaponry , and an Original Series communicator  represents Season 1; the Red Angel suit, the Enterprise captain’s chair, the transporter room animation and the original Starfleet delta emblem represent Season 2; Book’s ship represents Season 3; the Zora voice modulation graphic represents Season 4.
• Those portable pattern buffers sure are handy. Phasers, dermal regenerators, ham sandwiches — something for every situation!
• L’ak’s body makes an appearance, but actor Elias Toufexis did not actually return to Toronto for this episode, he revealed on social media. 
• Culber gets a nice little McCoy homage with his “I’m a doctor, not a physicist” line.
• Nhan tells Saru, “Remind me to never play you in Ferengi rummy,” a game never previously mentioned in Trek .
• Stamets, Tilly and Adira (Blu del Barrio) find a way to quantum entangle the spore drive’s magic mushrooms, split the ship in two, and surround the Breen dreadnaught to jump it away from the dual singularities. Federation starships really do move at the speed of plot!

• Discovery separates its saucer and secondary hull for the first and only time in the series. (I don’t think we even knew the ship was capable of separation!)
• Force-jumping the Breen dreadnaught was ridiculous, but man did it look cool!
• When the Progenitor gives Burnham a taste of the technology’s power, she sees many past versions of herself: as a young girl, in her Season 1-2 uniform and hairstyle, wearing her yellow Starfleet prison jumpsuit from “Context Is for Kings,” and her Season 3 courier look.
• A reversed clip from Season 1’s “Will You Take My Hand?” is used in the Progenitor sequence — specifically the pullback from 23rd century Paris into Earth orbit, showing Spacedock under construction.
• It seems like the Discovery writing team seemed to have completely forgotten that Adira Tal hosts a Trill symbiont, with the many lifetimes of knowledge and experience that come with a joining. “When did you get so wise?” Stamets asks. Um, when they got a Trill symbiont two seasons ago, people!
• Familiar Star Trek items seen in Kovich’s office include a Terran Empire dagger, a TNG Season 1 “dustbuster” phaser, a bottle of Chateau Picard wine (vintage 2249), and a VISOR like the one worn by Geordi La Forge.
• Agent Daniels’ last appearance — prior to Season 3’s “Die Trying,” where we first met Kovich — was the 2004 Star Trek: Enterprise episode “Storm Front, Part 2.”

• I’m happy for T’Rina, but I did NOT love her wedding hair — yikes! I don’t know if her wig was slipping back under the weight of the headdress or if they just decided to give her a new haircut, but man those bangs were severe.
• Book mentions that he encountered a group of Talaxian pirates on the way to Saru and T’Rina’s wedding.
• The Starfleet officer who notifies Admiral Burnham that her shuttle is about to land is voiced by Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise .
• The space deer outside of Burnham’s fence is named Alice, named for the main character of Burnham’s favorite childhood book.
• The 33rd century coda introduces yet another new Starfleet uniform design, complete with rank pips under the wearer’s chin (uncomfortable when looking down, no doubt), upside-down trapezoids on the arms, and one more Starfleet combadge redesign. An Admiral’s badge can even initiate an entire costume change, apparently!
• Captain Leto Burnham (Sawandi Wilson) is named for Book’s nephew Leto, who perished when Kwejian was destroyed in Season 4.
• Leto’s next mission is to the planet Crepuscula , which is the desert world where Burnham and Captain Georgiou were visiting in the opening moments of “The Vulcan Hello.”

• Admiral Vance remains on active duty in the 33rd century, and Tilly is the longest-serving Starfleet Academy instructor in history. (Gee, I wonder if she’ll be in the Starfleet Academy series? Hmmmmm!)
• The USS Discovery’s physical arrangement is fully reverted to its original configuration — including the elimination of programmable matter and the “-A” designation on the outer hull, and restoration of the original command chair control panels — to align with the continuity of “Calypso,” which was filmed between Seasons 1 and 2.
• It seems kind of cruel to leave Zora alone for 1,000 years just to wait for Craft , right? Like, she’s a computer but she’s still a sentient being!
• Due to scheduling conflicts, Wilson Cruz was not available when the final ‘crew reunion’ on the Discovery bridge was filmed in 2023. Culber is represented by a stand-in during wide shots and a digital composite of Cruz from archival footage in his close-up — with his white uniform CGI’d in place.
• Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) both say the word “happy” when we see them during the farewell montage. Are they happy… together???
• It may have taken five seasons and 900+ years, but as we see Discovery fly out to complete its last mission, somebody FINALLY remembered to shut the cargo bay door.

Discovery ushered in the modern era of Star Trek , something I truly never would have thought possible before it was announced back in 2015. I simply didn’t think there would ever be any new Star Trek after Enterprise ’s fourth season came to an end in 2005.

I am so grateful for Discovery , not only for opening the door to so much new Trek —  but also for bringing so many new fans into the fold. I know so many people in my personal life who started with Discovery and have gone on to watch and love everything else Star Trek as well. That’s huge, and  Discovery did that.

Despite my personal quibbles with elements of “Life, Itself”, it feels like the right finale for Discovery — an episode that only this series would build towards and do. Lest anyone think I’m giving a backhanded compliment here, I’m not.

“Life, Itself” is the show that Star Trek: Discovery set out to be, unapologetically, and how great is it that it got the opportunity to realize itself?

Star Trek TNG Turns Bowling Ball Into Sci-Fi Special Effect

Bowling is probably the last sport you think about when you think about Star Trek. After all, this is a franchise filled with some wild fake sports like Parrises Squares and real sports like darts, but we never see Captain Picard go to the holodeck and pick up a spare. Nonetheless, one simple special effect in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Symbiosis” was created using a bowling ball.

Is There Bowling In Space?

As longtime fans know, it’s actually surprising we never see any of our favorite characters pick up a bowling ball and demonstrate their sports acumen. In The Original Series episode “The Naked Time,” intoxicated officer Kevin Riley wanted to have a formal dance on the ship’s bowling alley, but because he wasn’t in the right state of mind and we never see it onscreen, it’s never been entirely clear if the Enterprise really had a bowling alley or not.

Decades later, set decorations indicated the Deep Space Nine had a bowling alley, but it was similarly never seen onscreen.

A VFX Puzzle

Despite Star Trek never really embracing this sport (let’s be honest, Chief O’Brien and Worf would have been the ultimate bowling duo), The Next Generation used a bowling ball for a simple special effect in the episode “Symbiosis.”

In the episode, there is a scene where the Enterprise gets a little too close to the star Delos. Obviously, the ship has shields to keep everyone safe from the heat and the radiation of the star, and the show’s visual effects team had to figure out how to represent this onscreen.

A Bowling Ball Saved The Day

Thanks to the “The Making of a Legend” special feature on the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1 DVD set, we know that a bowling ball was used for this effect, but making it work took some creativity. Their process began by trickling some salt all over the ball. Next, the team filmed the salt bumping off the bowling ball.

How did all of this translate to the cool special effect that we see onscreen? Simple: the effects team took the footage of the salt and “squeezed” it during the digital composition process. Their last step was to turn the footage upside down to achieve the desired look of the ship’s coruscating forcefield fending off the effects of the nearby star.

Physical Media

We found this story extremely cool, and the only way to really learn about stuff like this is to buy the Star Trek: The Next Generation DVDs or Blu-rays (bowling ball not included) and check out the special features.

Sure, it’s nice having most of the entire franchise available at the push of a button with your Paramount+ subscription. But without the relevant physical media, these behind-the-scenes tales will be lost in time, like tears in the rain…er, stream.

These days, Star Trek shows like Discovery and Strange New Worlds look undeniably beautiful, but they have a somewhat sterile aesthetic thanks to everything being accomplished with CGI wizardry.

In the days of The Next Generation, the effects crew had to work with real models, practical effects, and plenty of ingenuity to bring our favorite episodes to life. Just something for you to think about next time you’re talking about Trek over a White Russian at your favorite bowling alley.

Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 10 “Life, Itself”

Star Trek: Discovery delivers an excellent series finale that surpassed our high expectations, as this show ends its five-season journey with one of the most Star Trek messages possible.

Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) is trapped in the Progenitors’ portal, and it’s a locale that makes thorough use of this show’s famous AR wall. It’s a beautiful location, one that inspires mystery and familiarity, as Burnham views relatable environs throughout the galaxy, presumably created by the Progenitors. After falling into and then struggling to find her way out of a cyclonic environment, she encounters Moll ( Eve Harlow ), who is still hell-bent on finding a way to resurrect her lover, L’ak ( Elias Toufexis ).

After reaffirming she won’t let the Breen or the rogue Moll have the tech before the Federation can safely study it, Burnham finds herself engaged with the desperate ex-courier. This extended imaginative, gravity-defying fight scene ends with the pair calling a truce to find the Progenitors’ tech together. Moreover, Burnham gives Moll her personal assurance that she is looking out for Moll’s interests.

On their path to the bright light they assume indicates the Progenitors’ tech, Burnham notes a major difference between the environment within the portal and the rules of physics enjoyed by those outside the portal. There are pockets of “negative space” in the portal, places that shouldn’t exist. Upon interacting with one of these spaces, Burnham opens the true path to the tech – a jaunt through a field of waist-high flowers amid a pastoral, sunset-kissed area.

The pair run across a rock monument that Burnham deduces was made by the tech’s 24 th -century scientists for their fallen comrade, as referenced in “ Jinaal .” Not surprisingly, as they are right on the cusp of interfacing with the tech, Moll cold-clocks Burnham and tries to take the tech for herself, which leads to her entrapment as the space outside the Progenitors’ portal starts to get all wonky, much to the detriment of Discovery and its crew.

What are Discovery ’s crew up to while Burnham is on the doorstep of the Progenitors’ tech? The Breen dreadnaught that got its shuttle bay absolutely wrecked in the previous episode is more or less out of action, but our protagonists still have issues. Tahal ( Patricia Summersett ) is on her way, and the temporarily disabled dreadnaught near Discovery is harassing our heroes with fighters.

This situation just adds pressure to Commander Rayner’s ( Callum Keith Rennie ) rescue of his captain and the Progenitor tech. To rid themselves of those pesky fighters, Rayner and his bridge crew resurrect the Riker Maneuver from Star Trek: Insurrection (whether they realize it or not) and destroy their pursuers by igniting a plasma field near the black holes. Meanwhile, Cleveland Booker ( David Ajala ) and Doctor Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) take a shuttle to keep the portal from falling into the black hole.

“Ever since Jinaal, I’ve been trying to figure out what it means, this change inside of me or whatever it is. I’m not sure if this will give me the answers, but it might. And at the very least, I can help him. I know I can.” – Culber to Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ), as the doctor goes with Book into the dangerous space surrounding the Progenitors’ portal.

Why is the good doctor on such a dangerous away mission? Before Booker embarks to save Burnham, Culber insists on coming with him, as he instinctively feels he needs to do this. Surprisingly, Culber remembers the precise tractor beam frequency required to grab the Progenitors’ portal, something he has no reason to know; after all, he doesn’t keep any of Jinaal’s memories. Remember, the scientists who studied the Progenitors’ tech, including Jinaal, did indeed make it as far as Discovery ’s crew has, and would thus know how to access the Progenitors’ portal. Why did that particular memory unlock itself when Book needed it? Culber is puzzled by this fortuitous event.

The end of Culber’s metaphysical journey this season is in the shuttle’s cockpit with Book, as the pair hold onto the portal while Burnham is within. Culber never gets an answer to the spiritual journey he experienced this season, but you know what? He’s okay with that. Whereas he thought he might be on the path to answers of life and death, he is content with the mystery of not knowing the answers to such powerful questions. Not knowing, after all, is part of the human condition.

With the Breen dreadnaught coming back online and posing a serious threat to his rescue mission, Rayner needs to eliminate the ship from the playing field. Tasking Paul Stamets to work miracles, the engineer and Adira Tal ( Blu del Barrio ) devise a way to use Discovery ’s Spore Drive to jump the dreadnaught to a different part of the galaxy: the Galactic Barrier. After all, the decades-long trip home for the Breen is more time than the Breen ever gave Rayner’s family during their occupation of his homeworld.

Let’s talk about this plan for a second. Using Discovery ’s trademark Spore Drive technology – which the Pathway Drive recently made outdated, much to Paul’s chagrin – in a way we’ve never seen before is a smart and cool trick for the series finale, and we think Rayner found a clever, harmless way to avenge his family and world while still serving his mission. Seeing Discovery separate its saucer to encase the dreadnaught with a Spore Drive field is such a remarkable sight, and it comes as Burnham is coming face-to-face with a Progenitor.

What to do with Ultimate Power?

Remember when we said Moll and Burnham were on the cusp of discovery? We were referring to them being faced with a puzzle. A grouping of nine triangles sits on a table at the center of the Progenitors’ space, and it’s here Burnham figures the hint she received from the mindscape – “Build the shape of the one between the many” – comes into play. As we alluded to earlier, Moll gets a try at the puzzle first, but ends up injuring herself and almost wrecking the space in and around the portal. When its Burnham’s time to try the puzzle, she correctly uses the lessons she learned along the clue path and places the triangles in the proper order – in a way that forms a larger triangle using negative space between the other triangles – which thus unlocks the key to the whole shebang.

Burnham comes face to face with a Progenitor ( Somkele Iyamah ), or at least the semblance of one; after all, Progenitors died out billions of years ago. The Progenitor asserts she is now responsible for showing Burnham how to use the Progenitors’ technology, and that the rate of its life-creating nature can be adjusted for speed and scale. Moreover, the Progenitor surprises Burnham with a weighty reveal: The Progenitors aren’t actually the ones who created life in the galaxy; they found it there and augmented it after arriving. Who are the Progenitors’ predecessors, the ones who the Progenitors assume created them? Who created the creators, and exactly how far back such a creation cycle goes, is a question that may never be answered, but one that’s mighty fascinating to ponder.

“I’m far from perfect. I’m afraid, lost sometimes.” “Every sentient being, myself included, is all of those things. Yet some strive to be the best of themselves. I see that in you.” – Burnham and the Progenitor.

The Progenitor recalls how the only other visitor to the Progenitors’ space, the Betazoid Dr. Derex, asserted the next visitor needed to be better prepared to handle the tech’s enormous responsibility. Having passed all those trials laid by the tech’s scientists, the Progenitor gives Burnham the powerful choice of choosing what should be done with such power.

The climax of Burnham and the Progenitor’s conversation is framed against the actions being taken by Burnham’s friends in pursuit of their shared goal. It’s a powerful, inspiring scene that is interposed with the actions others are taking – including Discovery spore-jumping the Breen ship – in pursuit of the ultimate treasure and Burnham’s rescue. Major kudos to director and Discovery production veteran Olatunde Osunsanmi for crafting such powerful storytelling.

To help Burnham decide what to do with the tech, the Progenitor also asks Burnham what’s most important to her. As the one who proved herself time and again as someone responsible and altruistic, the choice is hers. The Progenitor offers what was important to her and her people. In their time, they were the only sentients in the galaxy, and they wanted to populate the Milky Way with an endless array of diverse beings. Burnham can’t answer the question of what is most meaningful to her immediately – who could, really, without weighing a ton of factors and deep introspection? – so the Progenitor leaves Burnham with the tech and one final gift.

Burnham’s mind conjures a montage of all the things that had to happen to get her to this point in time. The propagation of life on Earth, evolution, discovery, humans reaching for the stars – it’s all there. Returned to the injured Moll with the bad news that she can’t revive L’ak with the Progenitors’ tech, Burnham and Moll are rescued from the Progenitors’ portal by Book and Culber. Thanks to Discovery’s ability to spore-jump the Breen dreadnaught away from the battle zone, and with Saru’s ( Doug Jones ) ability to force Tahal’s fleet to turn around, the day is saved.

Action Saru

Yep, Saru ended up playing a pivotal role in helping his former shipmates. Remember how in the last episode he was tasked with taking a shuttle to intercept Tahal’s fleet and get them to stand down? He embarks on that mission with Nhan ( Rachael Ancheril ), who we’re thankful makes one final appearance in this show besides her wasted role in “ In the Shadow of War .” Nhan volunteers to assist Saru on this possible suicide mission, and they both agree the effort is worth it to save their found family on Discovery .

“Ambassador Saru, are you insane?” “Not to the best of my knowledge.” – Tahal and Saru, as Saru attempts to stop Tahal’s fleet in an unarmed shuttle.

Catching up to Tahal’s fleet as they barrel toward the black holes, Saru gets one of his best moments in recent seasons. First, the Kelpien hails Tahal to try a typical diplomatic overture, including offering her some trade concessions if she were to stand down. But when that approach predictably doesn’t work, Action Saru comes out in full force – but not by him shooting his ganglia. No, he’s more calculating than that.

Saru confidently asserts himself and confronts Tahal, without any hint of deceit in his expression. The Kelpien uses his diplomatic connections made during his absence from the show, and keen observation of Tahal’s behavior and motivations to all but force her to turn her fleet around, lest she encounters trouble from Starfleet’s allies and other Breen. This scene is a masterclass from Doug Jones, who constantly nails how to act while wearing a mountain of prosthetics and makeup. Expect this scene to show up in any future compilation video for Top Badass Star Trek Character Moments.

We Are Enough

“I saw the last four billion years… I realized we already have infinite diversity in infinite combinations. There’s no need for this technology anymore.” – Burnham.

With the day saved, it’s time for Burnham to decide what to do with the Progenitors’ tech. Her answer offers the perfect Star Trek- ian message. She orders Discovery to shoot the tech into the event horizon of the nearby black hole, free from discovery of any Milky Way species. Her rationale is beautiful: the people of the 32 nd century already have such a diverse and wonderful array of relationships – “infinite diversity in infinite combinations,” as she says, borrowing a phrase from her Vulcan upbringing – that this renders the Progenitors’ tech unneeded in such an idyllic galaxy. Think about this: Burnham asserts the ultimate power in the galaxy already exists in our shared diversity. How much more Star Trek can you get? We loved this resolution to the season-long question of what Discovery should do with the Progenitors’ technology. It really is quite inspiring.

Stamets, who has been viewing the potential study and utilization of the Progenitors’ technology as a lasting part of his legacy in the wake of his spore drive being rendered obsolete, isn’t so thrilled by this plan. However, he ultimately accepts Burnham’s well-intentioned logic and concedes casting the technology into the black hole is the right thing to do. Offering some words of support to her faux-foster father, Adira reassures Stamets that the crew learned a lot in their pursuit of the Progenitors’ tech, and that gaining knowledge is a good enough outcome. We agree with Stamets when he calls the young Adira “wise” for such a mature observation. What are humans if not their quest for lifelong learning?

“I’ve lived many years, captain, and many lives. I’ve met few who have impressed me but also aggravated me as much as you.” – Kovich to Burnham.

There’s one more surprise in store before the episode proper ends with Saru and T’Rina’s scenic marriage and Book and Burnham heartfully reigniting their relationship before venturing off on another mission. ­ Discovery returns to Federation HQ after the ordeal at the black holes, and Burnham pays one last visit to Doctor Kovich ( David Cronenberg ), who recently requested Moll be transferred to his care for unknown reasons. Burnham’s Red Directive mission is over, and all records about the Progenitors’ tech will be erased.

It’s a sensible outcome for Burnham, who, let’s remember, had her 23 rd -century activities erased from official records, but it’s clear she harbors questions about who or what Kovich really is. Every time Kovich was on screen since his introduction in season three, there’s been more to him than meets the eye. Luckily, Discovery wouldn’t let the show end without revealing a big surprise to Enterprise fans.

You might see where this is going if you watched Scott Bakula’s four-season early-2000s Star Trek show. Burnham gets Kovich to finally formally introduce himself to her: Agent Daniels of the USS Enterprise and “other places.” Kovich is a codename for the time-traveling agent seen in a handful of Enterprise episodes, and his extra-temporal nature explains why he not only has access to legitimate pen and paper, as seen earlier in the season, but a collection of memorabilia from across the timeline. On his office shelves, we see artifacts such as what’s presumably Geordi LaForge’s VISOR, Ben Sisko’s baseball, and a bottle of Chateau Picard. It’s Easter egg city for Star Trek fans in this scene, and it’s a relief knowing this show had a cool plan for Kovich all along.

Such would be a great place to leave this season if we were expecting its return next year, but of course, this show’s cast and crew had to return for additional shooting after news of Discovery ’s cancellation broke more than a year ago. For the last 15 minutes of “Life, Itself” director Jonathan Frakes closes out the story of our inspirational protagonist. In a sequence set decades after the events of the Progenitor search, Burnham, who seems to have retired on Sanctuary Four with Book, has one final mission: escorting her son, played by Sawandi Wilson , to Federation HQ for him to assume his own captaincy.

“A long time ago, someone asked me what was most meaningful to me… At the end of the day, every member of your crew has to find their own sense of meaning.” “So, do you know how you answer that question now?” “Yeah… just being here. You know. Sometimes life itself is meaning enough.” – Admiral Burnham to her son.

Burnham and her son share a heartfelt conversation about the importance of captaincy and the even greater importance of finding meaning in one’s life. It’s a tender discussion, and neatly puts a bow on one of this series’ most prominent themes: finding family. Burnham asserts her time aboard Discovery and making the close connections she did was one of the most impactful aspects of her life.

Besides the prideful mission of bringing her son to his first command, Starfleet has one more mission for Admiral Burnham. She is to lead Discovery and its resident artificial intelligence, Zora ( Annabelle Wallis ), to coordinates quite a ways from home. Zora’s Red Directive mission? Await a “craft” – but Burnham doesn’t know if that refers to a ship or a person. We know, however, that Craft is a person, someone who is destined to visit Discovery in the far future as Zora lives a solidary existence as the sole resident of the ancient Starfleet ship. Finally, we get a direct link to the 2018 (yes, six years ago!) Short Trek episode “ Calypso .”

Before sending Zora on her way, Burnham lives in the past a bit as she sits in her captain’s chair one last time. The aged Burnham disappears briefly, replaced by her younger 32 nd -century self, as the admiral remembers her found family from Discovery . Thanks to Burnham’s vivid imagination, we see the entire cast on the bridge one last time. Luckily, both Keyla Detmer ( Emily Coutts ) and Joann Owosekun ( Oyin Oladejo ) make one final appearance, after basically being absent this season.

As far as nostalgic family gatherings go, this one, scored by a heartbreaking soundtrack that really pulls at your heartstrings, is a great one. The scene is imminently appropriate considering Burnham just told her son the most important thing to her was family, and we’re saying goodbye to this cast we’ve grown to love over the last seven years.

Discovery , getting its “last dance,” as Burnham wistfully says to herself,gets the Babylon 5 -esque farewell treatment as the ship, newly de-graded to appear as it did before its jump to the future, is saluted by rows and rows of Starfleet vessels as Burnham and Zora lead the ship into its lonely future. Fin .

Of course, we think this show deserves more than just the relatively quick, albeit well-executed epilogue delivered due to the show’s surprise cancellation. Extended farewells to certain cast members would have been welcomed, but perhaps we haven’t seen the end of this crew’s adventures in the 32 nd century. Who knows if books, comics, or other media can pick up stories left untold. The possibilities for continued storytelling using Discovery ’s powerful ethos and 32 nd century worldbuilding are endless, and it’d be a shame if the final minutes of “Life, Itself,” as good as they are, were indeed the end of the line for these characters.

Sticking the Landing

“Life, Itself” serves as a fantastic finale for the season-long Progenitor mystery, tying together the scientists’ clue trail and associated tests of character with masterful storytelling and emotional depth. Burnham’s decision to cast the Progenitors’ tech into the black hole is a remarkable reflection of how strongly and powerfully Discovery upholds Star Trek ‘s timeless ideals of galactic cooperation and the power of diversity. By choosing to trust in the strength of “infinite diversity in infinite combinations,” Burnham embodies the essence of Roddenberry’s vision, reminding us that true power lies in the unity and diversity of life across the galaxy. If only this lesson was followed in the present day.

Burnham’s resolution, combined with stunning visual spectacles throughout the episode, Culber’s acceptance of the mystery of life, the reveal of Kovich as Daniels, the touching glimpses of Burnham’s future, and a heartfelt sendoff for her crew, solidifies “Life, Itself” as one of Discovery ’s best entries. This show has delivered a series finale that not only meets but exceeds expectations.

Stray Thoughts:

• Here’s a neat statistic from the fine folks over at TrekRanks : “Life, Itself” makes Discovery the longest-running Star Trek series ever. This show, from premiere date to today, is 11 days longer than the time between TNG ‘s airdates for “Encounter at Farpoint” and “All Good Things.”
• Why was Moll fighting Breen while in the portal? The Breen who were sucked in before her should have been deferential to their new commander, no?
• Burnham really should have warned Moll she was going to programmable-matter a dermal regenerator into her hand, as Moll could and should have easily taken the surprise tool in Burnham’s hand as a weapon.
• We see almost 20 Breen fighters pursuing Discovery . Why can’t such a large taskforce disable one ship?
• Culber gets to utter a version of the increasingly rare classic Trek line by saying, “I know I’m a doctor, not a physicist, but…,” and we’ll be damned if that didn’t put a smile on our face.
• Pay attention to Jörg Hillebrand on X , who will undoubtedly turn his eagle-eye toward identifying all the mementos in Kovich’s office.
• After voicing her opinion earlier in the season that Starfleet Academy was missing a key element, Tilly realizes in this episode that a one-on-one mentorship program is what the Academy needs. So, expect to see such a program play a role in the upcoming Starfleet Academy show.
• Book notes to Burnham that he planted the World Root, which was given to him by the Eternal Gallery and Archive in “ Labyrinths ,” on Sanctuary Four, the planet seen in “ That Hope is You, Part 1 .” In the epilogue for “Life, Itself,” we see a strong, mighty tree near Burnham and Book’s house that is likely the spawn of the World Root.
• Burnham seems to have named the pretty sci-fi deer on Sanctuary Four “Alice,” perhaps a reflection of how Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland played a role in Burnham’s upbringing.
• Did you notice how there’s a Starfleet insignia in Burnham’s backyard, which serves as an indicator of sorts of where the shuttle should pick up the admiral? Remember in the series pilot how Burnham and Georgiou traced a Starfleet insignia in the sand to indicate to Shenzhou where to pick them up. The symmetry is just *chef’s kiss*.

Thanks to Paramount Home Entertainment, fans can now travel centuries back – to 1923, exactly – as the prequel series' first season will be arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on August 8. The new release will revisit the Dutton family's history with all-new featurettes and bonus contents.

Considered to be an instant hit on Paramount+ , the Blu-ray release of 1923 comes with three new featurettes, including the "Behind the Story" content for each episode and the show's storytelling techniques. Moreover, the release also includes special features, such as "Unstoppable Change: The Adventure of 1923," "I Am the Land: Teonna Rainwater," and "Inside the Series."

Yellowstone introduced audiences to the Dutton family's complicated and cruel lives. However, 1923 raised the stakes in Yellowstone in a way we haven't seen before. Created by American filmmaker Taylor Sheridan , the show's synopsis describes the series as "a whirlwind romance out of Africa to the rugged mountain frontier of Montana." Starring Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara, 1923 highlights the Dutton family's struggle in an era plagued with drought and prohibition. Having experienced the Great Depression a decade earlier, the series—set during the early 20s—sees Jacob and Cara fight for their family's legacy.

The Expanding Story of the Dutton Family

Despite conflicts involving Kevin Costner , the Yellowstone universe is constantly expanding – and the Dutton family won't be going away anytime soon. Yellowstone , which debuted to critical acclaim back in 2018, spawned different spin-offs, including 1883 and, of course, 1923 . The two prequels mentioned went back in time to tell the infamous family's history. And with Bass Reeves , 6666 , and 1944 coming soon enough, there will be plenty of stories to be familiar with and secrets to uncover.

1923 brings the best of Yellowstone to a higher level of excitement with excellent casting and a well-written plot. The first season of the series was outstanding, thanks in large part to Sheridan's writing and the talented cast members. Apart from Ford and Mirren, the 1923 cast also includes Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, Isabel May as Elsa Dutton, Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton, Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis, Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford, and Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield. 1923 arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on August 8.

I love Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , but even I can agree with one major fan criticism of his role in DS9 's first two seasons. While DS9 is now rightly regarded as a critical highpoint in the Star Trek franchise, it took a while to bed in with viewers who preferred the action and adventure of Star Trek: The Next Generation . As the lead member of the Star Trek: DS9 cast , Brooks' Sisko followed in the footsteps of TNG 's Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). However, while fans liked Sisko a lot, they felt he lacked Picard's commanding presence and dramatic impact.

This negative feedback about Commander Sisko and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine more generally was shared with the production team at the end of season 2. The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion revealed that fans effectively wanted DS9 to be more like TNG . To justify its existence, DS9 had to establish itself as separate from other Star Trek TV shows , so this criticism does miss the point of the show a little. However, as I recently looked back on Sisko's impact on DS9 season 1 and 2, I found myself agreeing with the criticism that he sometimes lacked presence .

Benjamin Sisko's ending in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine finale was originally a lot less ambiguous until Avery Brooks asked for it to be changed.

Fans Criticized Sisko For Not Making An Impact In Star Trek: DS9’s First 2 Seasons

It's unfair to say that Sisko makes no impact in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's first two seasons, but all too often he fades into the background. After immediately making an impression in "Emissary", outlining his many differences from Captain Picard, Sisko starts to get lost among DS9 's ensemble cast. It's for this reason that few, if any, season 1 and 2 episodes make anyone's list of best Sisko episodes of DS9 . There are some strong moments, such as Sisko's insurrection against the Bajoran isolationists in DS9 's Circle trilogy, or his barnstorming " it's easy to be a saint in paradise " speech from "The Maquis".

According to a 2002 special feature on the season 7 DVD boxed set, Avery Brooks had apparently considered leaving Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the show's early years. A conversation with his son about never giving up changed his mind.

However, early period Sisko rarely got to be front and center in the way that Picard or Kirk were in their Star Trek shows . That's partly due to the fact that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine isn't set aboard a starship, and is instead set aboard a military space station and commercial hub. A lot of Sisko's jobs in DS9 seasons 1 and 2 were smaller-scale, like dealing with accusations of sexual impropriety against Quark (Armin Shimerman) or intervening in a rivalry between two businesses on the Promenade. After such small-fry concerns, DS9 season 3 finally gave Sisko a proper challenge to sink his teeth into.

How Star Trek: DS9 Season 3 Fixed Sisko For The Better

Answering fan complaints about Sisko lacking impact, showrunner Ira Steven-Behr and his fellow writers immediately gave him more prominence in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3. Where in previous seasons, Sisko wouldn't have much to do in an episode that wasn't focused on him, the writers ensure that DS9 's commanding officer is present throughout. For example, DS9 season 3, episode 3, "The House of Quark" is a Ferengi comedy about Quark (Armin Shimerman) marrying a Klingon, but also features a great scene where Sisko gives Chief O'Brien (Colm Meaney) advice and support on marital issues.

More broadly, the introduction of the Dominion in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's season 2 finale revitalizes Sisko as a character. From securing the USS Defiant to leading a diplomatic mission to the Gamma Quadrant, Sisko is given a role of vital importance to the Federation from season 3 onwards. From a real-world perspective, Avery Brooks is relaxing into the role, and by the end of season 3, is finally allowed to grow a beard and shave his head for season 4. This final touch completes Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3's concerted effort to show Benjamin Sisko as the integral and impactful lead character he should have been from the start.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.

St. Mary's Catholic Church was built in 1906-1907. Reflecting the influence of neogothic architecture, the red brick house of worship included a choir loft and an organ. Murals painted on the walls were said to have been the work of Italian craftsmen. The church was gutted during the Stalinist era. STAR TREK THE ORIGINAL SERIES features the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Capt. James Kirk (Shatner) and his first officer, Lt. Cmdr Spock (Nimoy) during the 23rd century. They are on a mission in outer space to explore new worlds, where the Enterprise encounters Klingons, Romulans, time paradoxes, tribbles and genetic supermen.

The three 2004 DVD sets collect all 79 episodes of the show, including "The Cage" in both a restored color version and the original, never-aired version that alternates between color and black and white. Each set is supplemented by over an hour of featurettes incorporating new and old interviews with Shatner, Nimoy, other cast members, and producers, and there's also some vintage footage of Gene Roddenberry. Accompanying the 20-minute seasonal recaps ("To Boldly Go...") are a number of interesting featurettes: "The Birth of a Timeless Legacy" examines the two pilot episodes and the development of the crew; "Sci-Fi Visionaries" discusses the series' great science fiction writers; Nimoy debunks various rumors in "Reflections of Spock"; "Kirk, Spock & Bones: The Great Trio" focuses on the interplay among Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley); and, in what is probably his last Star Trek appearance, James Doohan (Scotty), slowed by Alzheimer's but still with a twinkle in his eye, recalls his voiceover roles and his favorite episodes. As they've done for many of the feature-film special editions , Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda provide a pop-up text commentary on four of the episodes filled with history, trivia, and dry wit. It's the first commentary of any kind for a Star Trek TV show, but an audio commentary is still overdue. The technical specs are mostly the same as other Trek TV series--Dolby 5.1, English subtitles--but with the welcome addition of the episode trailers. The plastic cases are an attempt to replicate some of the fun packaging of the series' European DVD releases, but it's a bit clunky, and the paper sleeve around the disc case seems awkward and crude. Still, the sets are a vast improvement both in terms of shelf space and bonus features compared to the old two-episode discs , which were released before full-season boxed sets became the model for television DVDs. --David Horiuchi

The Boys showrunner says it's likely that the series will go on longer than its original five-season plan

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke thinks it's unlikely that the Prime Video series will wrap up after five seasons as originally planned – especially when it comes to his track record with TV.

Before The Boys, Kripke was the showrunner of Supernatural, the CW series about two demon-hunting brothers played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Initially meant to run for five seasons, the show came to an end in 2020 with season 15. 

"I have learned since then to not try to call the seasons as the person who, and this is without hyperbole, is literally the most wrong in entertainment history of how many seasons their show should go," Kripke told Inverse . "Someone pointed that out to me and I was like, 'You're right. That's ridiculous. I need to keep my mouth shut.' And so I will."

The Boys has already been renewed for a fifth season, despite the fact that season 4 hasn't aired yet. "We're about a month into the writers' room right now, so we have some pretty cool notions," Kripke recently told ScreenRant . "It's a very raw lava-esque deal right now. It hasn't hardened into anything, but I'm excited. I think there's some crazy shit's been talked about, that's for sure."

Saratov Oblast was the center of Volga German culture, Germans who resettled in Russia in the 17th century enticed by offers of farmland, until World War II, when Stalin deported the Germans en masse to Siberia and Kazakhstan. Today, Saratov Oblast is a big center of industry along the Volga River.

Overnight trains from Moscow to Saratov take about 16 hours and are very affordable. Flights cost about twice as much (although they are still very reasonable) and will get you there in an hour and a half.
