10 PHILIPPINE ROAD TRIP DESTINATIONS: From Manila, Cebu, and More!

You know what that means: the weather is more unpredictable. But you should never let less sunshiny skies rain on your parade. The rainy season is when Vins and I love going on road trips with our friends!

This post is brought to you by Pepsi.[/caption] For budget travelers like us, the rainy season is a great time to explore. Some destinations are much better during this time: waterfalls are grander, beaches are less crowded, and wildlife is more alive! The best part: It’s off season! Hotel and resort stays are much cheaper!

Don’t let the season stop you from exploring! We’ve asked some of our travel blogger friends for some of their road trip route recommendations and we’ll be sharing that in this post.

But before that, some important tips to turn your road trip into an awesome journey by making sure you get your money’s worth.

• The more, the merrier, the cheaper . You get the full experience when the barkada is complete! It’s also a lot cheaper because you get to split the costs of everything. In general, the cost of family rooms and dorm rooms divided among the group is lower than a double room. At restaurants, “for sharing” meals split among the group costs much less than individual orders.

• Ask for the hotel’s policy on extra beds . Most hotels allow extra beds for a minimum fee! You can take advantage of this to save on hotel expenses.
• Buy food, drinks, and toiletries before leaving . They are generally more expensive if you buy at the resort or hotel. You’ll save a great deal if you bring your own provision.

• Watch out for potential savings! Even small discounts matter. They add up over time. Hotel-booking sites often offer deals like free breakfast during off-season. Take it! When it comes to drinks, a road trip won’t be the same without Pepsi. Choose a 1.5L bottle of Pepsi, which costs only P38! That’s a P10 drop from its usual price and much lower than other brands. Every peso your barkada saves collectively can be used to fund other activities along the way!

• Buy in bulk! It will help bring down cost. Instead of buying individual sunscreens, just buy a big one and share. Grab 1.5L bottles of Pepsi and just pour into your own reusable cups! It’s more sulit that way.

When it comes to road trips, no one is more credible in the Philippine blogosphere than Kara Santos of Travel-up . Her pick: Manila to Sorsogon. It’s one of the more popular road trip routes in the country. You can adjust your itinerary depending on the number of stops and how much time you want to spend in each place. The suggestion below is a very relaxed itinerary, where you can still spend some quality time in the major stops (Quezon, Naga City & Sorsogon).

Day 1: Manila to Quezon (passing the Laguna backroads) Scenic drive through Laguna backroads, stopover at Pililla Windmills Lunch in the Pagsanjan area; drive to Lucban Check into Batis Aramin Resort in Lucban, Quezon Kamay ni Hesus (optional)

Day 2: Quezon to Naga City Drive from Lucban, Quezon to Naga City, Camarines Sur Pass the Old Zigzag Road Stopover photo ops at Gumaca Arrive in Naga City Check in to chosen hotel Food Trip / Dinner at Bob Marlin’s/ Coffee at Travel Cafe Camsur WaterPark (optional)

TIP: You can cut this road trip to two (or even one day) if you leave really early on the first day and make minimal stops, but this can be very tiring.

BATANGAS BEACHES ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for residents of: Manila, Batangas, Southern Luzon

My personal pick is Batangas. I’m biased, of course, because I was born and raised here. It is a blessed land. It cradles a wide array of diverse landscapes — a scenic lake, spectacular diving sites, breathtaking rivers, fertile farm lands, enchanting mountains, and a volcano.

But what most people love about Batangas is its beaches! This route will take you to some of the province’s most stunning ivory coasts!

Suggested Route:

Day 1: Lipa City to Laiya Drive to Lipa City for a quick lunch Head to your resort in Laiya in San Juan, where you will spend the night Hit the beach

Much like Tagaytay , Baguio is a favorite amongst locals when they want a chilly escape from Manila. Milea Bee Farm is a top farm destination with its authentic and serene environment. With its aim to save the bees, the farm is dedicated to the care and propagation of various species of honey-producing bees. 

Currently, they have Philippine Native Honey Bees, Italian Bees, and a variety of Philippine native Stingless Bees in their natural habitat. 

Located 21 kilometers away from Batangas City , this small farm is located in a secluded area with no neighbors and no electricity. It is also a five-minute walk away from its parking area. But this is what makes it exciting because it brings you to the natural world of bees. 

They offer a Beesita sa Bukid tour to guide you in your stay at the farm. The guided tour starts with a talk about bees, and then you can taste the fresh honey direct from the beehive. 

The tour ends with light snacks and bottomless honey drinks. It lasts one hour and thirty minutes and is available daily from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm only. We suggest picking up an earlier time to avoid the scorching noontime sun. 

Milea Bee Farm also grows edible fruits, herbs, and various vegetables like cucumber and celery. They offer vegetable picking to the guests, where they can personally pick the fresh and organic vegetables from their gardens. 

Please note that the farm does not have a restaurant. They can, however, serve food using their organic ingredients if there is a prior arrangement. 

Batangas road trip itinerary #2: Dive in Anilao 

• Best time of the year to attend: April to May
• Suitable for: Teens and adults
• Things to see: Rich and colorful underwater world, rare critters, nudibranchs

The birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines, Anilao is one of the top diving destinations in the country. It is a protected marine sanctuary that is home to rich coral reefs, a variety of fish, and other underwater creatures. 

It is also ranked third for muck diving, next to Indonesia’s Lembeh Strait and Malaysia’s Mabul Island. 

Anilao has more than twenty diving sites you can choose from. The prominent ones in the area are Kirby’s, Twin Rocks, Mainit Point, Beatrice Rocks, Secret Bay, Devil’s Point, and Eagle Point, to name a few. 

Since it is just three hours away from Manila, Anilao is the preferred diving destination of both local and foreign divers. It is also a beginner-friendly diving place because many offer specialized diving courses and packages for both advanced and beginner divers. 

The primary diving season in Anilao is from early November to May. However, the peak season for diving is April to May. The temperature may go up to 28.8 degrees, but the visibility is good, where you can expect to see up to 30 meters in terms of diving conditions. 

Before deciding to dive, please make sure to check the local weather report to know if diving is suitable on your chosen date. 

Batangas road trip itinerary #3: Hike in Mt. Maculot

• Duration: 5 – 6 hrs
• Things to see: View of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake, the Grotto, the Rookies, and the Summit

Mt. Maculot is one of the famous hiking spots in the Philippines that is good for hikers at all levels. Its summit has a 4/9 difficulty level, making it the best day-hike adventure option with a magnificent view of the Taal Volcano. 

The mountain is located at Barangay Cuenca, Batangas. Local authorities require local and foreign hikers to pay a fee and register before trekking. A trained guide is also needed for a safe journey. 

Even though some parts of the trail are steep, slippery, and muddy, it is a beginner-friendly mountain trail. It takes about five to six hours trekking to reach the summit. If you want a day hike, it is recommended to start hiking at 5 am. 

What’s good about Mt. Maculot is that it has 14 resting campgrounds or stations, which symbolize Jesus Christ’s journey on Mount Calvary. 

There are also three main destinations for mountain trekking: the Grotto, the Summit, and the Rockies. The Grotto is the popular vantage point and is the sire for the Lady of Lourdes shrine. 

Both the Summit and the Rockies vantage points offer views of the most famous Taal Volcano. The Summit is the second vantage point that offers breathtaking views of the Taal Volcano Island, Mount Makiling, and Labangan Bay. Meanwhile, the Rockies is the last vantage point overlooking the rocky cliffs along the southern part of Taal Lake. 

Before the Taal Volcano became active again, tourists could trek the main creator of the small volcano, either walking or riding a horse. However, the local authorities currently prohibit such activity for safety reasons. You can only view the Taal Volcano and Taal Lake from a distance. 

Batangas road trip itinerary #4: Revisit history at Taal Heritage Town

• Duration: 6-10 hours

Some practical information before your trip to the Philippines

First and foremost, we recommend that you do not rent a car in the Philippines , as driving is very different from here and quite dangerous if you are not used to it. The roads are not always adapted, scooters are very (very) numerous and especially at rush hours, which makes traffic complicated (high density). Moreover, you need an international driving licence or you will not be able to drive a car. When you are in the big cities, you can use the “ Grab ” application to get around, it is the equivalent of Uber in Southeast Asia.

Stop 1: Manila

What to do in Manila?

The capital of the Philippines, Manila is in a state of continuous change. A large metropolis, it mixes past and future. Its nightlife is important. We start this 10-day road trip in Northern Philippines with a day in Manila, but don’t worry, you will return to the capital at the end of your trip.

• Explore the city’s historic neighbourhood:  Intramuros . It is the oldest in the city with its churches, cathedrals, museums… The best way to get to know almost everything about the history of this area is to take a guided tour , either on foot to get around or by bike for a more sporty alternative.
• Rent a jeepney (military jeeps transformed as typical Philippines public transport) or just walk around the many streets.
• Start your visit of Intramuros with the Saint Augustin Church , which will tell you about the history of Philippines.
• Interested in Spanish colonisation?  Head to Santiago Fort (Intramuros), one of the rare ruins in the Philippines. And if you want to save money, keep in mind that you can get in for free on Sundays!
• Take advantage of a beautiful end of the day to go and have a drink on one of the many rooftops of the capital. Beautiful views and sunshine are to be expected!

Stop 2: Baliuag

What to do in Baliuag?

Baliuag is a city of the Bucalan region and is right next to the region of Pampanga. It’s a nice stop of this 10-day road trip in Northern Philippines, alternating between culture and nature. 

• Explore the  Baliuag Museum and Library , cultural center in the city center, telling the city’s history.
• A 45 min drive away, go discover the  Candaba Bird Sanctuary  get to enjoy nature and admire rare birds (don’t forget your binoculars if you want to get a closer look of these birds !).
• If you like visiting, San Agustin Church is a must-see. One the most beautiful churches of the region, it is a popular attraction.

Where to sleep in Baliuag?

Stop 6: Alaminos

What to do in Alaminos?

Before getting to  Alaminos , stop at  Cacupangan Cave   for a few hours, a semi-natural cave where you’ll have to walk, climb and even swim! And get to see bats, crickets, fish and snakes!

The city is famous for being the home to the Hundred Islands National Park and its 124 islands off Brangay Lucap’s shore. It’s a great stop to combine relaxation and adventure on this 10-day road trip Northern Philippines. 

• Nature lovers, do not miss the Hundred Islands National Park . This stunning place is calm and you’ll get to go on boat excusions around the islands or go diving and admire giant shells and colourful fish.

What to do in Dagupan?

Makati is one of Manilla’s neighbourhoods, also called the business district or the « Filipino   New-York » because of its many sky scrapers and luxury stores. It represents the modern side of Manila and is perfect for partying, and celebrating the end of your 10-day road trip in Northern Philippines. 

• Relax on a bar’s patio and enjoy the city’s atmosphere.
• Take advantage of the great rooftops such as the “ The Nest Dining in The Sky ” to have a drink with friends or family and enjoy a view over the whole city. You can even book a room there to enjoy the view a while longer! It’s a bit expensive but… Incredible.

Philippines Road Trip: Manila to Leyte in 1 Week

What’s the longest road trip in the Philippines you’ve taken? Ours is a 1-week-long drive from Manila to Leyte, where our final stopover was Kalanggaman Island in Palompon.

Hali and I booked this packaged tour in the Holy Week of 2016. As such, we had ample time for a long vacation and we didn’t have to use up leave credits at work. Initially, I considered going to Calayan Island instead, but ultimately I decided that a long road trip is something everyone should experience at least once. Moreover, since this was a packaged tour, we simply had to pay and let the organizers arrange everything.

That saying, you can also use this as a guide if you ever plan on doing a similar road trip.

Road trip from Manila to Leyte

Thoughts on our road trip, tips on how to survive a long road trip, budget and expenses.

Our group met at Buendia Station where a private van was waiting for us. Our road trip includes stops to interesting points in Albay, Sorsogon, Samar and finally Leyte.

Manila to Leyte Road Trip Itinerary

Our organizers created the itinerary. This is an edited itinerary to show the actual one that we followed.

We had an agreement to have an open itinerary. This means the itinerary is subject to change, depending on our decision. We can stop whenever we discover a new place of interest even if it’s not in the original schedule.

Our original plan was to visit Kalanggaman Island in Leyte and then head straight to Sambawan Island in Biliran. After a group discussion, it was decided to camp overnight in Kalanggaman Island instead. I was disappointed since the reason I booked the tour is to see Sambawan Island, but Hali was in agreement that it was the more practical choice, money- and time-wise. Looking back, I agree that we made the right choice then because it would be a shame to visit Sambawan Island on a rush.

From Manila, we spent a night on the road all the way to Bicol Region. We were ready for Day 1!

We had breakfast and a short tour in Cagsawa Ruins in Albay. This is actually our second time here — Hali and I had also visited Cagsawa Ruins during an outreach mission in Sorsogon a year before.

We took a couple of shots, greeted the other joiners in the road trip, and then proceeded to our next stop, Sorsogon.

Hali and I love Sorsogon , so we were both excited to get here!

From Albay, we headed straight to Paguriran Island Lagoon in Bacon, Sorsogon. Paguriran Island Lagoon is an emerging summer destination. It features a natural pool that fills with aqua-green saltwater during high tide. It’s similar to  Tangke Lagoon in Gigantes Islands .

It was low tide when we arrived in Paguriran Island Lagoon, so we didn’t get a chance to swim. We stayed for a bit and took pictures.

We had lunch and then hurried to catch the last passenger boats in Matnog Port headed to Subic Laki Beach . We got off at Subic Laki Beach, where we pitched our tents for the night. Hali and I watched a bright full moon before joining the group socials held on the beach.

The morning after, we went on an island hopping tour in Matnog .

Our first stop is  Matnog Lighthouse , an abandoned lighthouse in a rocky islet. The waves were strong so our boat had a bit of difficulty in letting us off, but we safely managed to set foot in the island.

Next is Juag Lagoon Fish Sanctuary . This is a marine sanctuary home to various species of fishes, giant clams, sea cucumbers, and more. In our first visit in Matnog, our group stayed here and even today it’s still one of my favorite places in the country. Hali and I were so excited to be back. We sought out Kuya Alex and asked how he was doing considering the last typhoon that ravaged the province and then we went with the others for fish feeding.

Our last stop is Tikling Island , a privately owned island with gorgeous shoreline. Similar to Subit Liit and Subic Laki, the sand here is pinkish when wet. Hali and I enjoyed the shimmering-blue water to our hearts’ content.

Visiting Sorsogon for the second time was delightful as the first time. We freshened up in Tikling Island before heading to our next destination.

From Matnog Port, we rode a roro bound for Samar. We took a boat to Marson’s Beach Resort (also known as Villa Patria) in Bani Island. We pitched our tents here for the night. Marson’s Beach Resort has a pebble beach, but we liked it nonetheless. Along the shore, there are two tree swings where you can sit and get your feet wet from the waves during high tide. We enjoyed a boodle fight dinner before heading back to our tents.

Early in the morning, we rode the same boat to Biri Island, located 1 hour away.

We registered in the tourism office and headed to the Biri Rock Formations . There are seven rock formations you can visit. For our day trip, we explored Bel-at, Caranas and Magasang rock formations. I particularly enjoyed exploring Bel-at and Caranas because of the picturesque ocean views and tidal pools.

Our final destination is Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte. Kalanggaman Island is a bird-shaped island famous for its whitish sand bar. It’s also an IG-famous spot, perhaps one of the most recognizable places in the Philippines.

We arrived here in what was probably the busiest day of the year — a weekend in Holy Week. After looking for a good place to pitch our tents, Hali and I walked around the island. It was crowded so we didn’t get a good photo of the sand bar, but instead stayed in quieter spots of the island. We then spent the rest of our time enjoying social drinks. As our organizer Kuya Ram said, “Ito talaga yung buhay beach bum.” (This is the real beach bum life).

I think that Kalanggaman Island is beautiful, but it’s one of those places that look way better in photos than in real life. Aside from its picturesque sand bar, another thing that has it going is its good tourist management. There is daily tourist capping, proper garbage disposal, among other things. I hope the rest of the LGUs in the country follow suit.

The morning after, we packed our things and made our way back to Manila. The return drive was almost non-stop except for a few hours we spent in CWC Sports in Camarines Sur, where our driver got a good sleep while the rest of us tried wakeboarding.

This Manila-Leyte road trip was once-in-a-lifetime experience. Because the Philippines is an archipelago, rarely do people plan on doing road trips from Luzon to Visayas, preferring instead easier modes of transport such as airplanes. The good thing about this route is we were able to stop at interesting points.

One of the reasons I joined the tour is that I wanted to see Sambawan Island in Biliran, so I was initially disappointed when the group decided to stay in Kalanggaman Island instead. However, in hindsight this is the better decision, since ideally it takes a whole day to island hop in Biliran.

If I were to change a few things, it would be:

• Exclude Paguriran Island Lagoon from the route. It took us a long detour to get there and even then we couldn’t stay long since we needed to catch the last trip of passenger boats in Matnog Port. I don’t think it was worth it.
• Add another 1-2 days to visit Sambawan Island in Biliran.
• Plan more pit stops on the way back so that it wouldn’t be a continuous long drive.

Overall though, this was definitely an enjoyable experience. I’m looking forward to more road trips in the future.

Here are personal tips from this week-long Philippine road trip.

• Pack light . Seriously, try to put everything in one backpack . If you have it, use packing cubes to save more space. OOTDs are fine, but re-use clothes if possible. You’re most likely going to be in a van (or a smaller car) and it’s gonna be cramped. Be considerate to yourself and other people by packing light to occupy as little space as possible.
• Get an awesome road trip playlist .
• Be with people you’d like to travel with . If you’re joining a packaged tour, research about the tour agency first. You’re going to be on the road half the time, so it’s important that you get along with your acquaintances.
• Use an untinted car . My personal preference is going in a car with untinted windows. Heavily tinted windows can protect you from the day heat, but it can also be stifling especially since you will be on the road for hours. Personally, I like looking outside on road trips as it lets me see a little bit of the country at a time.
• Prepare for a long return trip . We visited everything on our itinerary on our drive to Leyte, so we had nothing left to see on our way back. We literally stayed in the van for 24 hours or more, except for a short stop at CWC in Camarines Sur.

This is a packaged tour. Hali and I spent about P7000-8000 each.

We paid for the van use and then chipped in for island hopping, cottage rentals, and so on. Food was shared by the group or brought individually.

Also included in our expenses were endless snacks for the road trip such as Ovaltine biscuits (Did you know these exist?) and refreshments, (mostly ice-cold coconut juices and1.5-liter Coke bottles); two beach hats; a white anklet made of shells; and a thick four-meter rope that may be of use for survival in the future.

Ovaltine biscuits? Where did you get them? Haha! I remember that I have eaten Ovaltine candies but not biscuits. This is such a long trip! The longest road trip that I have experienced was from Manila to Pangasinan. It was enjoyable because I live here in Oriental Mindoro. I have not visited the northern part of the Philippines prior to that trip. I agree that you should travel with the ones whom you want to be with. It is a long trip and if you are in a wrong company then the trip would be unbearable.

Wow this is an amazing road trip. I think I agree to all your tips. Always pack light as much as possible bring 1 bag, traveling with people you love makes the travel less boring and you wouldn’t notice the time. Plus yeah the not tinted car. I agree with that I love seeing the world runs through the window. I’ve been to bicol region and it was really a long land trip. I can’t imagine pushing it forward to samar and leyte. Another city that is near Manila that makes a good road trip destination is Antipolo. It only takes approximately an hour to go there which makes it hassle-free. There are great places to visit where you can eat your hearts out after admiring beautiful works of art.
