snorkelling nusa penida tour

If you love spending time in the water, snorkeling in Nusa Penida has to be included in your Bali itinerary . Nusa Penida, famous for the mighty Manta Rays, boasts some of the best snorkeling spots in all of Indonesia and is located only 45 minutes from Bali by fast boat.

While living in Bali, I went on a one-day snorkeling tour in Nusa Penida and had the best time, even as someone who is nervous underwater. The private tour was such a treat, an experience I can’t recommend enough!

I have since returned several times, so I knew I had to do this guide for you to cover the best time to go snorkeling in Nusa Penida, the best snorkeling spots and what you can expect to see.

Best time to snorkel in Nusa Penida

Private one-day nusa penida snorkeling tour, other popular nusa penida tours, how to get around on nusa penida, manta bay and manta point, crystal bay, toyapakeh wall, green sea turtles, reef and bamboo sharks, what to bring on a snorkeling trip, where to stay in nusa penida, remember to pin for later 😉, is nusa penida good for snorkeling.

Absolutely! Nusa Penida is a fantastic destination to go snorkeling, it is actually one of the best in all of Indonesia. Its pristine, clear blue waters and diverse marine life make it a captivating underwater paradise.

Trust me when I say that snorkeling in Nusa Penida is an experience you don’t want to miss while in Bali.

The best time to snorkel in Nusa Penida is in the dry season , which falls between April and October. During these months, the water is generally calm, allowing for better visibility and a more enjoyable experience.

The optimal time of day for snorkeling in Nusa Penida is in the morning when the light is just perfect.

It’s important to note that conditions can change, and sometimes the water can get a bit rough. Before heading out on your own, always inquire with local guides to ensure snorkeling is a good idea for the day.

Kelingking Beach, one of the stops on our snorkeling trip to Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida snorkeling tours

There are many amazing tours to choose from online these days. Some tours cover all the popular spots around Nusa Penida, while others also include snorkeling around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan .

The tour my friends and I booked is this 10-hour private Nusa Penida snorkeling tour departing from Bali.

You can choose between a snorkeling-only tour, or spend the afternoon exploring the island, with stops at Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach (Pasih Uug Beach), and Angel’s Billabong. Nusa Penida is such a beautiful island and actually quite different from Bali, so I highly recommend you choose both!

Many so-called “private” Nusa Penida Island tours include transfers by public fast boat, however, this tour gets you there on your very own boat. It was such a treat to skip the lines in Sanur Harbor and lounge in the sun on the roof on the way over. (You also have the option to choose a shared fast boat to make the tour more affordable.)

We started the day at Manta Point and I got to experience the incredible Manta Rays. I have always been very nervous in the water and never enjoyed being around large sea creatures, however, I absolutely loved this experience. So you can safely bring your anxious friends or family members.

Our next stop was Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay, before a nice lunch at AMARTA Sunset Lounge & Bar with the most amazing views. The highlight of the snorkeling for me was seeing Sea Turles up close, I just love them so much.

After lunch, we got in an air-conditioned car and headed to all the Nusa Penida highlights I mentioned above. My lovely, knowledgeable and very accommodating guide Gee, doubled as a photographer. I can hands down say that this is one of the best guided tours I’ve ever been on.

How to get to Nusa Penida

If you prefer to spend some more time in Nusa Penida, you can easily book a transfer only online . The easiest way to get to Nusa Penida by yourself is by taking a fast boat from Sanur Habor in Bali.

The boat ride usually takes around 45 minutes, and several operators are offering daily schedules.

Keep in mind that it can be a bit difficult to get on board the boats in Indonesia, often without a ramp. So I can’t recommend this for people with mobility issues.

🌟 You can check price & availability here >> Fast boat from Bali to Nusa Penida

The best way to get around Nusa Penida largely depends on personal preference and comfort level. Renting a scooter, or motorbike as the locals call it, is a popular option for those who are comfortable navigating bumpy dirt roads and want the freedom to explore the island at their own pace.

I love to ride a motorbike on Nusa Lembongan , however, driving in Nusa Penida was a whole other story. The island is much larger than I thought, let’s just say I have never gotten lost so many times as I did in Nusa Penida.

At one point Google Maps guided me into a village meeting where I was quickly and sternly asked to leave. Yikes!

With a private driver

On the other hand, if you’re not comfortable riding a motorbike or want a more comfortable and convenient option, I recommend renting a car with a driver.

When I don’t feel like driving by myself, I usually book this customizable tour . You have the driver for 8 hours and can set your own itinerary or take suggestions from the driver. Remember to pick option 2 if you’re already in Nusa Penida.

Crystal Bay - The second stop on our snorkeling tour to Nusa Penida from Bali

Best snorkeling spots in Nusa Penida

The highlight of snorkeling in Nusa Penida is Manta Bay or Manta Point because you get the chance to swim with the majestic Manta Rays. In my mind, snorkeling in Manta Bay is an experience that everyone should have on their Bali Bucket List .

It is known for being one of the best places in the world to swim with manta rays, and the strong currents in the waters surrounding Nusa Penida mean that these graceful giants are present all year round. The visibility is usually excellent, making it an enjoyable experience for snorkelers of all skill levels.

Keep in mind that these are very popular snorkeling and freediving spots, which means that it does get very crowded. Don’t be discouraged if there are 10 other boats when you get there, you can still have an incredible experience.

I prefer Manta Bay because Manta Point is located out in deeper water, not sheltered by any headlands. That means that the currents are much stronger, though both are located on the exposed side of Nusa Penida.

You’ll find Manta Bay just south of Broken Beach and Angel Billabong, two of the most popular tourist destinations on the west coast of the island, both included in this guided tour . You can see photos of both in my West Nusa Penida guide .

Crystal Bay is home to a beautiful sandy beach perfect for relaxing before and after snorkeling. It is up there with the best beaches on Nusa Lembongan , just with a ton more palm trees. You may even get lucky enough to catch sight of dolphins from the sand. Gotta love that, right?

It is arguably the most popular spot for underwater enthusiasts of all levels due to the easy access from shore, its abundance of colorful coral, sandy bottom and shallow clear waters. It is especially popular from July to October when you get the chance to witness the large sunfish, also known as Mola Mola.

If you decide to visit Crystal Bay on your own, you can conveniently rent snorkeling gear from one of the warungs along the beach. Just remember that unless you’re a very experienced swimmer, don’t go further out than where the boats are anchored, the currents can take you by surprise.

Located in the channel between Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, Gamat Bay boasts an impressive reef wall that is home to abundant marine life. I was amazed by the rich underwater world here, the colorful coral is among the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

Gamat Bay is easily reached both from the shore and via boat. It is surrounded by cliffs, creating a serene and quiet atmosphere while snorkeling. Remember to bring your GoPro or a more affordable underwater camera , because of the good light and shallow depth, it is an excellent location for shooting underwater pics.

Continue north and you’ll reach Toyapakeh Wall, known as one of the best snorkeling and dive sites in this area. It sits in the northern mouth of the Ceningan Channel, which means that the site is continuously fed from the currents flowing through bringing smaller fish and nutrients for the coral.

While the water is deep and currents strong, at times unpredictable, you are rewarded with impressive coral pillars featuring both hard and soft corals and rich marine biodiversity. Expect to see large schools of colorful fish, Bamboo Sharks and my favorite, turtles.

Four Manta Rays spotted while snorkeling in Nusa Penida

What you can see snorkeling in Nusa Penida

During my snorkeling tour in Nusa Penida , I was lucky enough to see the majestic manta rays up close. These gentle giants were gliding effortlessly through the water and it was fascinating to watch them feed on plankton.

Surprisingly large, flat and slightly weird looking, they are named for their unique appearance, Manta meaning blanket or cloak in Spanish.

The type of manta rays that you can expect to see on Nusa Penida is reef manta rays, the second largest ray in the world. With a wingspan of up to 5 meters, they are hard to miss.

Is it safe to swim with manta rays?

Yes, it is generally safe to swim with manta rays, not to be confused with stingrays. In fact, their calm demeanor and curiosity made the experience very enjoyable for me. Just remember to keep your distance, at least 3 meters, and avoid touching them as their skin is extremely delicate.

Another highlight of my snorkeling adventure in Nusa Penida was seeing the green sea turtles. These sometimes curious creatures can come up to you to investigate your camera. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any good shots as I was too busy keeping calm to not scare it away.

This colossal fish, often measuring over three meters in diameter and weighing over a ton, usually keeps to depths of several hundred meters. However, during the colder months, it surfaces to much shallower waters, making it visible to divers and if you’re very lucky, snorkelers.

I was thrilled to see some sharks as well. During a visit to Fiji some years ago, I forgo the chance to swim with these sharks because I was too scared and regretted it ever since. This time I was assured by my guide that it was completely safe, so I managed to stay in the water and keep relatively calm.

Although they may appear intimidating, they were actually quite shy and seemed disinterested in my presence.

The one thing I wanted to see that I didn’t was the well-camouflaged frogfish. These unique fish are ambush predators, and it would have been interesting to see them blend in with the coral and rocks.

Overall, snorkeling in Nusa Penida was an unforgettable experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to witness the beauty and diversity of the underwater world while in Indonesia.

Once you have decided whether to join a guided snorkeling tour or make your way to Nusa Penida on your own, it is time to pack your bags.

The number-one essential to bring on a snorkeling trip to Nusa Penida (or take before you go) is seasickness tablets. Consider also wearing a seasickness wristband on the boat, I’ve found these to be very helpful. If you’re anything like me and get seasick easily, this can make or break your experience.

I also recommend wearing your swimsuit under your clothes as these popular snorkeling spots do get crowded with no places to change in private.

Here’s a list of other items I always make sure to bring on my snorkeling trips:

  • Snorkeling gear : Although the tours provide everything you need, if you plan to spend a lot of time in the water, it might be a good idea to bring your own for a better fit and hygiene reasons.
  • Waterproof and reef-safe sunscreen : I apply it generously before getting into the water and throughout the day. It is so easy to get severely sunburned out on the water, it can literally ruin the rest of your trip.
  • Swimwear and a lightweight towel : Comfortable swimwear is important for enjoying your time in the water without having to readjust all the time, and a towel comes in handy for drying off afterward.
  • Underwater camera : Capturing the beautiful marine life around Nusa Penida is a must, so remember to bring your GoPro or waterproof case for your phone. I absolutely love my GoPro Hero 11 , the quality is just insane.
  • A change of clothes: Having a fresh set of clothes makes the boat ride back to Sanur much more pleasant.
  • Snacks and water: Although lunch and water usually are provided on the guided tours, I always pack some snacks and extra water just in case.
  • A small backpack or dry bag : Keeping all your belongings in one place, protected from water, is essential.

Bintang Bungalows, close to Crystal Bay, one of the best snorkeling spots on Nusa Penida

If you decide that one day in Nusa Penida is just not enough, I recommend finding a place to stay close to Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay on the west coast. My favorite budget accommodation option is Bintang Bungalows , located right in the middle of the two popular snorkeling spots.

As you can see above, you get your own super cute and highly-rated bungalow with air-conditioning and a semi-outdoor bathroom, and a beautiful pool area right on your doorstep.

If you have a bit more cash to spend, check out Atalaya Villas Nusa Penida . Omg, I have no words. This place is an Instagrammers dream. I wish my bedroom at home looked like that!

Two of the villas boast their own private infinity pool overlooking a sea of palm trees below. The common pool area is just as beautiful with tipi-like day beds and a bar serving up frozen margaritas. Perfect after a day of snorkeling.

Snorkeling Nusa Penida | A complete guide to this island paradise

It’s known for its drool-worthy, Instagram-perfect landscape shots, like the ‘T-Rex’ at Kelingking Beach, the dreamy Rumah Pohon treehouse, the death-defying staircase to the stunning Diamond Beach and numerous other iconic landmarks . But Nusa Penida island is equally admired for its teeming sea life; think parrot fish, angelfish, loads of turtles and – if you’re lucky – manta rays! Whether you’re already on the island or want to do it as a day tour from the Bali mainland, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to snorkelling Nusa Penida.

Snorkeling Nusa Penida - Manta Ray header

What to expect from Nusa Penida snorkeling

First up – you don’t need to just stick to Nusa Penida. You might know that Nusa Penida is only one of the three islands making up the Nusa Islands: Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Actually, if you had to ask us, we’d quickly tell you that it was our least favourite of the three!

So, when people talk about snorkelling Nusa Penida, they often mean spots around all three of the islands, accessible via local boat, car or motorbike.

We’ve indicated in each spot whether it’s accessible via land or whether it has to be done as part of a boat trip or tour. By the way, we’ve got more information below but we highly recommend you book this one in advance .

In terms of the marine life, there is a lot to see, we’d compare it to diving in Sulawesi . The sea bed here is home to nearly 300 types of coral and over 500 types of fish. Many avid divers (and snorkelers, of course!) make the pilgrimage to the Nusa Islands to spot manta rays or the moon fish ‘mola mola’, which appear between July and October.

The state of the corals really depends on which spot you choose but, on the whole, they are in an okay condition; as best as you could expect from an area which enjoys a lot of tourism. This isn’t untouched Raja Ampat but it’s still beautiful and worth time spent underwater.

List of Nusa Penida Snorkeling Spots

Crystal bay – nusa penida.

This quiet bay is set in a protected bay just between the two islands of Lembongan and Penida. The beach itself is on the west coast of Nusa Penida and is a great stretch of sand to relax – it’s got beautiful palm trees and a few small warungs (local restaurants) to get snacks and a fresh coconut.

It’s a safe area to snorkel, plus you don’t need to venture very far to see multi-coloured fish and some corals – you can just walk in from the beach. The water is also usually very clear – hence how Crystal Bay got its name – so you should enjoy good visibility.

The area is actually quite famous for mola-mola sunfish and, of course, manta rays, but you’ll most likely need to go scuba diving to see those.

Accessible from land? Yes.

snorkelling nusa penida tour

Manta Point and Manta Bay – Nusa Penida

We were lucky enough to see giant mantas as they floated gracefully just below the surface of the water. However, as any tour operator on the islands will tell you, spotting a manta ray near Nusa Penida is not always a given.

Due to the increase in tourism in the area, you’ll find that the mantas have become a little shy and are increasingly sticking to the ocean floor. This means you’ve got a better chance to see them if you can scuba dive.

The two main spots where you’ll go to spot manta rays are Manta Point and Manta Bay, neither of which are accessible via land.

Both areas are not really designed for snorkelling to see corals – the water is relatively deep and can be quite choppy. The main attraction is the mantas, so you’ll usually visit this site only to visit these ‘devilfish’.

Accessible from land? No.

snorkelling nusa penida tour

Gamat Bay – Nusa Penida

Known as Crystal Bay’s little cousin, Gamat is a wilder, more inaccessible version. This secluded, slightly untouched beach itself is usually quite quiet although the snorkelling area attracts more visitors, as it’s usually part of the standard snorkelling tours offered in the area. It’s also busier in poor conditions as tour boats skip Crystal Bay and Manta Point in favour of the calmer Gamat Bay.

Gamat is particularly good for scuba divers (it has a beautiful coral garden at about 8 metres) but you could be lucky and see a bamboo shark if you’re snorkelling here.

Mangrove Point – Nusa Lembongan

This is one of the better snorkelling points in the Nusa Lembongan area, because of its proximity to mangroves, meaning that loads of fish and marine life live in the vast coral gardens near the mangroves, and thus make their way out to Mangrove Point. You aren’t likely to see manta rays but you’ll definitely see a lot of colourful fish here.

Mangrove Point does have a light current which carries you along the breath-taking coral reefs. You probably won’t need to do much swimming here (we didn’t!), since the current will drift you down the reef.

This spot is entirely safe but on the day we did it, the current was a little stronger than usual, so be prepared!

snorkeling nusa penida - coral reefs

Toya Pakeh – Nusa Penida

The last one on the list, this is probably a snorkelling ‘given’ if you’re departing from Penida itself. Toya Pakeh is the ‘pier’ or at least beach where all the ferries and boats come in. Most local tours will start here but even if not on a tour, you could wade into the ocean and try your hand at swimming for sea life.

Accessible from land : Yes.

Ways to snorkel Nusa Penida

Let’s be honest – the best way to see the various snorkelling spots on Nusa Penida and the surrounding islands is through a boat tour. Yes – I know – we’ve given you all the land-accessible options but you’ll miss out on key places like Manta Point. That said, there are really three ways you could get your snorkel fix in.

Self-guided

Trick’s in the name – you guide yourself. Take your pic of the snorkelling havens that you can reach via motorbike, and spend the day beach-hopping!

Motorbikes are easy to rent on Nusa Penida and usually cost between 50, 000 – 70, 000 IDR (3.50 – 5 USD /  2.75 – 3.85 GBP). A very stern word of warning though: The roads in Nusa Penida are very difficult. They are bumpy, hilly and full of potholes – even the most experienced of motorcyclists has trouble with them. So only do this if you are very confident.

Tours from Bali

Most people wanting to swim with manta rays will hop on a tour from mainland Bali. These tours are actually great value: you’ll usually get free pick up and drop off at your hotel, a fast boat from Sanur, three snorkelling sessions (spots dependent on weather), and a delicious local lunch, usually at Paradise Beach.

We prefer the full day all-in-tour which also allows you to navigate the mangroves via kayak or stand-up paddleboard (and includes all of the above). At time of writing, it cost 1,145,000 IDR (81 USD / 63 GBP) and is a bargain for the value you get.

Our advice? Book your Nusa Penida tour ahead if you can.

Tours from Nusa Penida or Lembongan

If you’re already on the island, it’s quite easy to find a local tour. You can head down to the Toya Pakeh beach and check out the operators, or ask your hotel or accommodation.

How to get to Nusa Penida

There are a number of ferries leaving from Sanur, in East Bali. However, we wouldn’t recommend just heading to the docks since these can fill up in high season. Book ahead for the lowest price – we recommend Bookaway since you can cancel up to 24 hours beforehand plus they have 24/7 customer support (unlike some other providers we used to use!).

Book your ticket: Bali to Nusa Lembongan/Nusa Penida .

What to pack for snorkeling on Nusa Penida

If you’re doing one of the tours, they all include snorkelling gear (fins and mask), lunch and water, so no need to worry about those. However, a few other key things to pack include:

  • Swimming gear (obviously!)
  • Sun protection – lotion and hat
  • Hydration sachets – if you get tired easily, it might be worth bringing one of these
  • Waterproof bag or housing for phone, camera and valuables
  • Bonus: Vaseline. If you struggle with ill-fitting masks and hate water getting into your mask while wading around, it’s worth putting some Vaseline around the edges.

Where to stay

Now we mentioned earlier that Nusa Penida was our least favourite of the Nusa Islands? Perhaps we’re jaded but we found Nusa Penida to be very ‘Instagram’ focussed – people were racing around the island looking for a feedworthy shot rather than just enjoying island life.

With that in mind, we have provided some good options for accommodation on Penida but also thrown in a few on Nusa Lembongan. We loved Lembongan for its laidback vibe, plus you can just scoot over the yellow bridge to neighbouring Nusa Ceningan.

Where to stay on Nusa Penida

Budget: Budget travellers should look no further than Apit Lawang . It’s got single beds (no bunks here!), a great location and even has a refreshing swimming pool, all at a bargain rate!

Mid-range: We love the Ananta Bungalow since it’s got cracking sunset views and is right by Crystal Bay, so you can easily hop onto your snorkelling tour! The bungalows are super affordable yet have modern, beautiful amenities.

Luxury: There are not many luxury options on the island but the one that sits atop the pile is worth the money: Semabu Hills Hotel . Think sweeping views, yoga in the morning for sunrise and plush, comfy suites – it’s the best hotel on the island.

Where to stay on Nusa Lembongan

Budget : With a perfect location near the harbour, super cheap prices and big, clean rooms and dorms, Acala Hostel is the best pick for backpackers looking to stay on Lembongan.

Mid-range : It falls nearer the budget side, really, but we have to make a huge plug for Dimol Garden Cottage . This property is a little off the beaten track but hugely worth it – it has the most amiable owner and staff, the bungalows are gorgeous, squeaky clean and smell amazing plus the pool is perfect for sundowners. We can’t rate this place highly enough for the incredible price!

Luxury: The Tamarind is one of the newer resorts on the island, and boasts all the luxury amenities you would want, all wrapped up in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s in a great location too, has 3 swimming pools and a delicious breakfast. What more could you want?!

Frequently asked Questions

Do you need to know how to swim for snorkeling?

The short answer is yes. It is possible to snorkel with a lifejacket, but you’ll need to discuss this upfront with the tour company and only choose spots like Crystal Bay, since it would be difficult to navigate more difficult snorkelling places like Nusa Penida Manta Point.

snorkeling nusa penida - snorkeler

Is it safe to go snorkelling in Nusa Penida?

Well, yes, but with a disclaimer. Tour operators will not take you to areas if the current or waves are too strong, opting for other, calmer waters. That said, the currents around the Nusa Islands are a little unpredictable and if you are doing a self-guided snorkeling trip you should be aware of the risks and take precautions.

If you are starting to tire, turn back, particularly if you are at more difficult spots like Manta Point.

Which one is a better destination Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan?

For snorkelling you can’t go wrong with Penida or Lembongan. But, if it was up to us? We’d pick accommodation on Nusa Lembongan.

Bonus: More things to do on Nusa Penida

Beyond a Nusa Penida snorkeling trip, the best way to discover Nusa Penida is to do a tour of other places on the island. There are so many of them, but here are a few highlights of things to do on Nusa Penida .

As we mentioned above, we don’t really recommend that you take a motorbike to get around to these, unless you are a very accomplished biker. We hired a driver for a day tour of the island, and think that’s the best way to get around. Check for the latest prices here .

Broken Beach

The name is a bit of a red herring – this one isn’t truly a beach. It’s a circular cliff walk that shows you a natural archway or ‘hole’, made by the waves breaking through the rock face.

7 days Bali itinerary - Broken Beach

Angels Billabong

Right next to Broken Beach is Angel’s Billabong; a natural crystal clear tide pool, that is best seen at low tide. Make sure you check the best time  to go and see the rock pools, else you can’t go down into it (it’s roped off).

When it’s low tide you can take a quick dip in the pool, formed from thousands of years of waves hitting the rocks.

Kelingking Beach

It’s the famous T-Rex, gracing Instagram feeds all over the globe. An islet shaped like a dinosaur that has people flocking to see it. Kelingking beach offers you a viewpoint to get this famous shot, as well as a chance to go down to the beach itself.

But, be warned. Firstly, there are many (many) tourists trying to get a shot from the viewpoint – expect crowds unless you go early. And, the staircase down the beach itself is pretty rickety. If you are afraid of heights, give that a miss.

7 days Bali itinerary - Kelingking beach

Diamond Beach

We loved the beach – it’s got a beautiful viewpoint and once you’ve made it down the stairs, you can spend hours watching the toothpaste-coloured blue waves breaking onto the sand.

As seems to always be the case with us when talking about Nusa Penida, here’s another warning. Firstly, the stairs are a little precarious at the bottom, so take it slow. Also, the sea currents are very unpredictable at this spot. Someone drowned a few weeks before we were there, so keep close to the shore.

7 days Bali itinerary - Diamond Beach

Rumah Pohon Tree House

Another Insta-famous place, this treehouse is actually up for accommodation, so you can book it to stay. Most people, however, go to get a nice photograph on the stairs leading up to the treehouse, since it’s perched with a perfect view from the Thousand Island viewpoint towards Diamond Beach. Keep in mind that the photo isn’t free – at last check it was 100,000 IDR (7.10 USD / 5.50 GBP) to take a snap there.

Manta Snorkeling Nusa Penida Bali – When? Where? How Much?

' src=

The manta snorkeling in Nusa Penida was the part of our Bali holiday that we were the most excited about. A close encounter with these majestic creatures was the highlight of our trip, and now we share all the information you need to know about these giant creatures, including when, where, and how you can swim with them when visiting the Nusa Islands.

Nusa Penida Manta Snorkeling Overview:

  • Manta rays can be seen year-round in Nusa Penida
  • The best time to swim with them is the dry season between May and October
  • The site where you can swim with them is called Manta Bay; it is located on the west side of the island
  • You can visit this spot by joining a manta snorkeling tour
  • Excursions can be booked locally or online
  • Local tours depart from Crystal Bay and Toya Pakeh Habor
  • Manta snorkeling day trips are also available from Bali and Nusa Lembongan
  • Swimming with manta rays is not dangerous, however, you need to keep a safe distance from them
  • This experience is recommended for advanced snorkelers, as the currents can be strong

Best Time To Go Manta Snorkeling In Nusa Penida

The good news is that there is no specific manta season in Bali. They are present all year round, thanks to the fact that the waters around Bali and the Nusa Islands enjoy the benefits of the Indonesian Throughflow. It is technically a massive volume of water (stream) that runs around the Indonesian archipelago from Timor to Bali.

feeding manta ray

This flow transfers the water from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. It is the largest movement of water anywhere on the planet, meaning that the strait between Bali and Lombok enjoys fresh, nutrient-rich currents in all seasons.

Understanding this phenomenon explains why Bali snorkeling spots feature such vibrant marine life. And also, this is the reason why manta rays can be spotted all year round here!

Manta Ray Nusa Penida

Although it is possible to encounter these graceful creatures year-round, you should avoid coming in the wet season, between December and March, due to rough seas. The best time for manta snorkeling in Bali is the dry season between May and October, when you have the highest chance of bright sunshine and calm water. Locals say manta rays are the most active in the mornings, so most tours are scheduled accordingly.

Where Can You See Manta Rays In Nusa Penida?

The island’s southern coast is the best place to see manta rays in Nusa Penida. There are three specific points where they are regularly seen: Manta Bay, Manta Point, and Manta Viewpoint. The first one is a snorkeling spot, the second is a diving site, while the third one, as its name shows, is a viewpoint where you can observe them from the cliffs.

Sometimes, they swim into Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay, too, which are two of the most popular snorkeling beaches in Nusa Penida . You can encounter them at these places, but it is rare.

Manta Bay is a relatively shallow bay on the west side of Nusa Penida. Here, manta rays swim near the surface and feed on the plankton that currents bring into the area. This is the place where most manta snorkeling trips will take you.

Mantas in Manta Bay - Bali

Tour organizers suggest visiting Manta Bay in the morning to see the most mantas. Therefore, it can get super crowded in the early hours of the day.

We think you should not skip the idea of going out for an afternoon trip as we saw many mantas later in the day too; you might be lucky to experience swimming with manta without the crowds!

Manta Point

Manta Point is one of the most southern dive spots on the island, surrounded by high cliffs. The water is approx. 15 meters (50 ft) deep here with tricky currents and often rough seas; therefore, this place is more suitable for scuba diving than snorkeling. This is a manta cleaning station where these majestic creatures come to rest above the shallower reef section while getting cleaned by smaller fish.

Manta Viewpoint

You don’t necessarily need to get wet to encounter these giant creatures; you can see them from land, too! Keep your eyes open while hiking or visiting viewpoints because you can often spot them when they swim near the surface.

Manta place from manta view point

The official Manta Viewpoint is on the left side of Broken Beach, the cliffs over Manta Bay. Generally, you have a chance to see them from all the viewpoints of the southern coastline. For example, we saw mantas from the cliffs at Kelingking Beach too!

Nusa Penida Manta Snorkeling Tours – Options And Prices

Whether you stay in mainland Bali, on Nusa Lembongan (the most popular Nusa Island), or Nusa Penida, several organizers offer manta ray snorkel tours locally and online.

The price depends on where you will start the tour: the most expensive ones are of course the manta tours from Bali mainland, while the cheapest option is to sign up for one locally when you are in Penida. Below, we collected the most important information on each version with approximate prices. However, note that prices are just approximated, except for the online tour prices.

Manta Ray Snorkeling From Bali

Manta snorkeling trips from Bali are usually full-day tours and stop not only in Manta Bay but also at some other Nuda Penida snorkeling sites. This is the most expensive and tiring option since you need to spend the whole on the boat.

Whole-day manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trips from Bali are available from 1.000.000 IDR (70 USD) with hotel pick-up, drop-off from most South Bali areas, soft drinks and lunch included.

Save time and pre-book it online, this trip has very good reviews:

If your schedule is tight, but you don’t want to miss swimming with manta rays, a day trip from Bali could be a good choice, but if your vacation itinerary is flexible, consider spending a few days on the island! There are so many things to do and attractions on the island so I’m sure you won’t regret it if you come for a longer time!

Manta Alfredi over the reef in Bali

Nusa Penida Manta Bay Snorkel Tour

If you stay on the island, you can easily book a manta snorkeling trip locally. You can ask your hotel staff to sign you up for one or go to Crystal Bay or Toya Pakeh Harbor and find a seller. These are the two main places where trips depart from and arrive.

boats in Toyapakeh harbour Nusa Penida

A 2 hours-long snorkel trip with two stops costs around 150.000-200.000 IDR (10-13 USD), while expect to pay between 300.000-400.000 IDR (20-25 USD) for a half-day trip with four-five stops included. Don’t be shy and try to haggle, you may get better a deal.

Should you prefer to book it online, we recommend this tour:

Tip: Organized tours usually provide gear, but we recommend having your own snorkel equipment .

Manta Trip From Nusa Lembongan

Should you stay on the nearby Lembongan Island, you can choose a half-day trip that includes manta snorkeling in Manta Bay plus one or two additional stops. This can be Crystal Bay or Gamat Bay in Nusa Penida, the Mangrove Point in Nusa Lembongan, or the Buddha Temple next to Nusa Ceningan, depending on the sea conditions and your tour provider.

Snorkelers swimming near a boat in Bali

Generally, locals use their traditional boats for such tours and take a maximum of 6-10 people. Trips usually start around 8 am and cost approximately 250.000-300.000 IDR (15-20 USD).

Swimming With Manta Rays In Bali Nusa Penida – How To Prepare

Don’t be afraid of the mantas.

Knowing that manta rays can grow up to 23 ft (7 m) and weigh about 6600 lbs (3000 kg) makes it easy to understand why many people think they are dangerous. But don’t worry; despite their massive size, manta rays are completely harmless to humans.

Bali manta rays are Reef Manta species ( Manta alfredi ) that are the second-largest ray species after Oceanic Manta with an average size of 9.8-11.5 ft (3-3.5 m). They are filter feeders, which means they feed on plankton, crustaceans, and smaller fish, and have small, non-sharp teeth only that they use to chew their food.

Manta alfredi aerial photo

Mantas don’t have poisonous tail stingers, so swimming with manta rays is completely safe. They have the largest brains of all bony fish and enjoy interacting with humans, so it is not a surprise that snorkelers and divers often describe their manta snorkeling as their best experience.

Don’t Chase And Touch The Animals

Even if manta rays are not dangerous, you should not chase or touch them. First, you can damage their special mucus layer by touching them; this coating protects them from bacteria and viruses. Second, chasing them scares them away. Try to stay relaxed without splashing with your fins too much, so they might swim close to you.

Be Prepared For Strong Currents

I feel it important to draw attention to the dangers of the currents around the Nusa Islands. The ocean has great power and we need to take precautions when hitting the water (read our snorkeling safety tips if you haven’t had it yet).

These extreme currents mean you must be extra careful if you go swimming, diving or snorkeling here, especially if you are a beginner. The currents are probably the strongest I’ve ever experienced while snorkeling and can change rapidly.

Rough sea Nusa Islands Bali

After our tour, we agreed that our manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trip was like swimming in a washing machine because of the rough sea and strong currents. Therefore, while swimming with the mantas, don’t forget to watch out for the waves, keep a safe distance from the boats around, and stay away from the cliffs!

Never swim far from the shore, and always use good snorkel fins to help you return to the beach! If you are caught by a current and can’t swim against it, wave to nearby boats and ask for help. I rarely suggest signing up for organized trips over snorkeling from shore, but this is the safest you can do in Nusa Penida!

Know That There Can Be Debris In The Water

I wanted to dedicate a single section to the plastic problem. You have probably also seen videos of a manta ray swimming through massive plastic in Nusa Penida. I also watched it and felt so sorry for these magical creatures because I know how polluted the ocean is.

Plastic is a real problem in Indonesia, and so it is in the Nusa Islands. Many people complain about the rubbish after snorkeling in Manta Bay. We were lucky because there was no (very little) plastic on the days we went there, but we know it was pure luck and the plastic problem exists.

 plastic in the sea

You find crystal clear water one day and a huge amount of debris the next; the explanation for these fast-changing conditions is the Indonesian Throughflow phenomenon . As mentioned, there are powerful currents around the island transferring water through the whole Indo-Pacific area, so nobody can predict what and when they will wash up onshore.

In most parts of Indonesia, there is no waste management. People don’t know what to do with plastic waste or how to recycle it. Usually, they collect and burn it (which is one of the worst things they can do since burning plastic releases toxins in the air), or it ends up in the sea after rain.

Hopefully, governments will soon realize the demand for urgent changes and develop a waste management strategy. But stopping the pollution is everyone’s responsibility. Do your best and minimize the impact on nature! Don’t litter and reduce the amount of plastic you use !

The Site Can Be Crowded

Swimming with manta rays in Nusa Penida has become popular in recent years. The number of boats and tourists visiting the bay is rapidly increasing, so you might end up being surrounded by tens of boats and hundreds of people while in the bay.

Unfortunately, there is no limit on the number of boats and visitors at the moment, so you need to be very careful when in the water. Try staying with your group and keep your distance from the boats.

Manta ray swims through a group of snorkelers

Sightings Are Not Guaranteed

Manta rays are present in the area year-round, but you will never be guaranteed to see them. They are wild animals that migrate freely wherever they feel like following the plankton.

Boat captions always do their best to find them for you; they keep contact with other boats and inform each other about signings, so you may stop at a different spot than you originally wanted. Even if you don’t find them, don’t be sad; come back another day!

Our Manta Trip Experience – Personal Thoughts

As I mentioned in the introduction, the manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trip was the one we waited for the most in Bali. We came to the island with the decision that we wouldn’t leave until we managed to swim with manta rays, but we were not 100% happy after the experience.

Don’t get me wrong, of course, we felt extremely lucky to be able to swim with these peaceful creatures! But seeing that there is no restriction on the number of boats and snorkelers in Manta Bay makes us worried.

There is no designated area where boats should stop, leaving space for the mantas, meaning they always chase them. Moreover, the leaking oil from the boat engines makes the water that mantas filter even more polluted.

Snorkeler with manta rays

It was also sad to see how disrespectful some people are and keep touching the mantas. I know there is little we can do to change this situation except warn people who do so, but we hope that authorities will realize that they have to act to protect manta rays and preserve their feeding grounds.

This, of course, does not mean that it was a bad experience; we made unforgettable memories while swimming among these unique creatures, but the experience could have been improved if both visitors and locals practiced responsible snorkeling techniques .

When looking for a manta snorkeling trip, try to find an eco-tour operator that takes care of the environment! Educate your environment about respecting marine life and creatures. Take only pictures and leave a small footprint!

Thank u for this article and for dedicating a section to the environmental factors and swimming etiquette as these thoughts were a major concern when debating whether to travel to nusa penida. It’s always important to educate where possible.

I will keep a look out for Discover Nusa Penida or any other eco tour group to arrange my manta ray experience if we decide to go.

Hi Chelsea, Thanks for your comment, we’re happy if the information helped you. Nusa Penida is becoming extremely popular but hopefully won’t be ruined by mass tourism. It is definitely the visitor’s and tour organizers’ responsibility how they take care of the environment, so we hope that the people started to understand that the choices (where to stay, what to buy, what to eat, what tour to choose) do matter. If you have time, I recommend spending a few days on the island so you can fully explore it and enjoy the places when the the day-trippers leave. Have a nice holiday, BR, Anett

Thank you for this article. You mentioned that you found a 2 hours long snorkel trip with 2 stops that costs around 150.000-200.000 IDR. Can you tell me what company it was with? Thanks for your answer in advance.

Hi David, Sorry I don’t remember the company name, but it was in Crystal Bay so I’m sure you’ll find them, there is a small desk on the left. Have a nice holiday, BR, Anett

Thanks for a very informative post.

Do you think snorkelling in Nusa Penida is safe for a 9 year old kid? The kid does not know swimming yet

Hi Suresh, Thanks for your kind comment. Personally I don’t think that Nusa Penida is a good place to snorkel for a kid who does not know how to swim yet because the currents can be really strong and tricky around the island (especially in Manta Bay, but also Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay can have strong currents). I would recommend going to Amed instead where the water is calmer (depending on the tide, the sea is often completely flat) but still, there is a lot of things to see, even turtles (you can find it in my ‘Amed snorkel spots’ post where to snorkel). Hope this helps, BR, Anett

Snorkeling Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a small island located near Bali and it is by far the highlight of snorkeling packed with the best of the underwater life and coral reefs for Snorkeling Nusa Penida.

Table of Contents

Things to know when snorkeling in nusa penida, the best 5 nusa penida snorkeling spots, nusa penida marine life, nusa penida travel tips, how many days to spend in nusa penida, snorkeling nusa penida tour, frequently asked questions about snorkeling nusa penida.

Nusa Penida is located approximately 45 minutes away from Bali using a speedboat. The island is only reachable by speedboat due to the distance but also because of the occasional waves which make the traditional boats unable to be used.

Nusa Penida is home to quite an extensive list of dive sites, each different from the other, and each with their own advantages for what snorkelers can see.

Ideally, for Nusa Penida snorkelers should opt for the 3 spots trip to maximise their visit for snorkeling Nusa Penida. Particularly the 3rd spot is almost always in the north part of the island where the best coral reefs are.

Manta Point

Manta Point is definitely the most popular of the Nusa Penida snorkeling spots and of course because that is where people can swim with the majestic Manta Rays.

The Manta Rays seen in Manta Point are the mature ones compared to the other snorkeling site Manta Bay where smaller Mantas can be seen. Wing span of the mature reef Manta Rays can be up to 4 meters.

Manta Point is a small rocky bay with no beach located on the south-west corner of the Nusa Penida island. Coral reef is not great here so the highlight for snorkeling is of course spotting the Manta Rays. Often though snorkelers can also see baby Eagle Ray as well as Bamboo or Nurse sharks.

Manta Point is generally an easy spot for snorkeling with the bottom found at 15 meters deep. Visibility is fair at approximately 10-15 meters and slightly might seem cloudy which is because of the plankton. As a general rule, when the visibility is really good it is hard to spot any Manta Rays because the Mantas they feed on the plankton and that’s when snorkelers see them swimming with their mouths wide open.

Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay is the second most popular Nusa Penida snorkeling spot. It’s the place where snorkelers compensate for what they don’t see in Manta Point: beautiful coral reefs, diverse tropical marine life and a stunning beach view on the surface.

Crystal Bay earned it’s name from the generally crystal clear waters here with visibility most often as far as 30 meters.

In Crystal Bay snorkelers can swim with turtles, spot octopus and all the other tropical marine life people can imagine. When the sun is shining strong, the colours of the coral stand out, the small schools of fish provide the entertainment and the snorkeling experience is complete.

Crystal Bay is an easy snorkeling Nusa Penida, swimming on the side of the bay just on top of the coral reef with a depth of approximately 5-8 meters.

This spot is perhaps the highlight of snorkeling Nusa Penida, and mainly because the coral reef is simply stunning. The people visiting SD Point often say it is better than The Great Barrier Reef at this time and this is not overselling it.

SD Point provides a continuous never-ending coral reef that is packed with schools of fish, pelagic life everywhere and turtles at every stop. Vibrant, rich, these are two of the keywords to describe SD Point.

SD Point is located on the north coast of Nusa Penida and it’s signature feature is that it’s a drift dive meaning that generally there is a unidirectional current which most often gentle helps you swim above the coral reef. We call it a lazy dive.

This snorkeling spot in Nusa Penida is neighbour to SD Point on the north coast of the island. Being located just near SD Point it also means that everything snorkelers love about one, will find in the other. The same amazing coral reef, the same amazing underwater life, the same type of drift.

Both SD Point and PED are visited typically on the 3 spots trip of snorkeling Nusa Penida.

Arguably that Mangrove is not located at Nusa Penida, instead at Nusa Lembongan, this snorkeling spot is in the top 3 together with SD Point and Mangrove, and for the right reasons. The coral reef at Mangrove is out of this world and most likely you have never seen a coral reef like this. It is hard to explain in words but once you see it, you will want to come back guaranteed.

Compared to the other snorkeling spots, Mangrove sometimes displays strong currents which makes it unsafe but when the water conditions are normal, it is the chosen site for all snorkelers visiting Nusa Penida island.

The marine life in Nusa Penida is the most diverse that you will find anywhere in and around Bali. The coral reefs are second to none, spotting the Manta Rays is a unique and memorable experience. Dolphins are almost always passing by which allows both snorkelers and divers to be lucky spotting them on many days.

Turtles are in abundance and different types of camouflage fish specifies are seen here such as the Stone Fish, Devil Scorpion Fish, or Frog Fish.

Although mostly reserved for divers, during the months of June to October, snorkelers sometimes can see the elusive Sun Fish also known as Mola Mola, especially in Crystal Bay and sometimes in Manta Point.

Nusa Penida is an island located just off the south coast of Bali, reachable by speedboat in approximately 30-45 minutes. There are daily ferries moving between Bali and Nusa Penida, the earliest starting at 7AM while the last ferry back to Bali is generally sailing off at approximately 4PM.

The main harbour for traveling to Nusa Penida is from Sanur but there is also the possibility to travel to Nusa Penida from Padang Bai.

For snorkeling Nusa Penida people can start from Bali as a day tour, visiting 2 or 3 of the popular snorkeling spots. Most of the dive centers and operators start the day at approximately 8AM and finish back in Bali at approximately 2 to 4PM depending on the number of stops.

Ideally if travellers would like to stay on the island of Nusa Penida, 2 to maximum 3 days is sufficient as the island is still largely undeveloped.

Accommodation options are sufficient and for all types of travellers but the island does not provide a lot of entertainment options.

The most popular things to do in Nusa Penida are:

  • Sightseeing

With Neptune Scuba Diving, as always we start the day in the morning at approximately 7AM with the hotel transfer. We will be meeting at the dive center for preparations, snorkeling gear check and the daily briefing to set the tone for the day. Return time is scheduled for approximately 2PM after 2 spots snorkeling and 4PM after 3 spots snorkeling.

The first stop on our snorkeling Nusa Penida tour is almost always Manta Point. This spot is named after the reef Manta Rays that can be spotted here. The Manta rays seen here are the mature ones with a wing span of approximately 3-4 meters. The Mantas in Manta Point are coming close to people so snorkeling here brings you up close and personal to these gentle giants.

The second stop on our tour is Crystal Bay which is known for crystal clear waters and stunning coral reefs . The coral reefs are beautiful, some of the best and filled with diverse marine life, including sea turtles, octopus, stone fish, frog fish, etc. When snorkeling at Crystal Bay, often we can spot dolphins passing by closely to us.

For the 3rd and last stop of the day we visit one of the drift spots on the north coast of the Nusa Penida island where the best coral reefs are. By far the highlight of the trip, packed with beautiful colourful fish and reefs that compete even with the Great Barrier Reef.
