The Similan Islands is a continental archipelago in the Andaman Sea off the coast of, and part of, Phang Nga Province in southern Thailand.

With a rich marine life consisting of hard and soft coral reefs, crystal clear waters and white beaches, Similan Islands are considered to be one of the best diving sites in the world. The main characteristics of the islands are the rock formations which consist of huge boulders, shallow waters and dense tropical forests.

Most of the Southeast Asia's impressive oceanic marine species can be found in Similan Islands.

Different species of Sea Turtles, Morays, Tunas, Lion fishes, Parrot fishes, Puffer fishes, big school of Barracudas  and more are waiting you.

 Surin Islands

The Surin Islands is a continental archipelago of five islands in the Andaman Sea, 55 kilometres (34 nm) from the Thai mainland.

More than 260 species of reef fish, 68 species of coral, 48 species of nudibranch, and 31 species of shrimp were recorded in the national park.

About the Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are an archipelago of nine islands. They are part of the Similan National Park and are protected islands, meaning they are uninhabited and quite strictly controlled.

In 2018 they capped the number of people that can visit the National Park per day, as the islands were suffering from over tourism. Make sure you book your Similan Islands day trip online beforehand so you don’t miss out!

Besides their stunning natural beauty, the Similan Islands are particularly famous for their epic diving and snorkelling opportunities .

They’re one of the most popular spots in Thailand, and a must-see if you love the underwater world.

Similan Islands day trip options

To get to the Similan Islands you need to take a boat from the harbour in Khao Lak, on mainland Thailand. Even if you’re staying in Khao Lak most Similan Islands day trips will include transfer to the harbour.

There are a lot of different companies doing day trips to the Similan Islands. Generally speaking, they all offer very similar experiences. I have listed below some of the most popular tours with great reviews online.

The only thing you want to make sure of is that you chose a tour with a speedboat. Since you only have one day in the Similan Islands, you want to make the most of it! Not spend it cruising on the way there.

Our Similan Islands day trip from Phuket

I visited the Similan Islands on my first trip to Thailand, when I spent 10 days in Thailand . We were mostly based in Phuket and did day trips to the surrounding islands, as well as then travelling on to Koh Lanta.

Most people tend to visit the Similan Islands on a day trip from Phuket. While the Similan Islands are undoubtedly beautiful, it is quite the trip from Phuket.

We woke up at 4:30AM and were picked up at our hotel in Karon Beach at 5AM. We drove for around 1.5 hours in a minibus, picking up other travellers on the way and eventually reaching the harbour.

Here we were served a light breakfast before embarking on another 1.5 hour speedboat trip. I’ve been sailing my whole life and I’m used to being at sea, however there were a lot of people on the speedboat that felt sick.

However once you arrive at the first Similan Island you will forget about the last three rocky hours. The water is such a bright turquoise that you can’t help but marvel at its beauty.

We visited three different islands and spent most of our time snorkelling in the clear water, we even spotted turtles!

The first island stop was a purely snorkelling stop, a little bit far from the beach. At the second island we all disembarked on the beach and had a lovely rice and seafood lunch, served directly on the beach.

The final stop was at the main beach of Koh Similan, the biggest island of the archipelago. This is the beach you always see pictures of taken from the viewpoint overlooking it.

Even on a rainy day when the colours aren’t as bright, it was amongst the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. If you’re visiting during the dry season, be prepared for it to be very busy.

We then got back on our boat and thus began our journey home, which ended up lasting forever. The waves were bigger so our speedboat was much slower, it took us at least 2 hours to get back to Khao Lak.

The drive back to Phuket was also never-ending. It was raining really heavily and the traffic was slow, meaning we didn’t get back to our hotel till around midnight.

This doesn’t obviously happen every day, however if you’re travelling to Thailand during the rainy season, it’s worth bearing in mind.

Is it worth doing a day trip to the Similan Islands?

Yes and no. I found the Similan Islands absolutely beautiful, but if I were to go back, I wouldn’t visit them on a day trip from Phuket.

The early morning start and the journey back that went on until midnight were just too much for me. If I were to go back I would do one of the following options.

Do a day trip from Khao Lak – On my second trip to Thailand I spent a night in Khao Lak and loved it. The town is much smaller and has a more relaxed vibe than Phuket.

The beach isn’t beautiful but from here you can go on a day trip to the Similan Islands, and cut out the long driving times to and from Phuket.

Do an overnight liveaboard trip – There are also a few companies that offer overnight trips to the Similan Islands.

You’re not allowed to sleep on the islands since they’re a protect national park, however you can sleep on a boat anchored off the shore.

These are pricier than doing a day trip, but you will live a much more magical experience! Imagine waking up in the morning to the sound of the waves and looking out of your window over the turquoise sea.

You will also able to appreciate the beauty of the Similan Islands all to yourself for a few hours before the crowds of tourists arrive.

Visit the Surin Islands instead – On my second trip to Thailand I visited the Surin Islands instead, and enjoyed them much better. These beautiful islands aren’t far from the Similan Islands, and offer a similar experience.

You can also camp on the beach in the Surin Islands, so if you want a longer experience but don’t feel like sleeping on a boat, it’s a great alternative. The Surin Islands are also still under the main tourist radar, and not as busy.

Besides the Similan and Surin Islands, there are towns of other beautiful island beach destinations in Thailand. Some of my favourite include Railay Beach , Koh Lipe , Phi Phi (and not only because of Maya Bay ) and the 4 Islands in Krabi .

Enjoying the beautiful beaches of the Surin Islands in Thailand

However all these options involve spending more than one night away from Phuket. If you don’t have long in Thailand, then a day trip to the Similan Islands is the easiest option.

You have to decide for yourself whether pristine white sand beaches, clear turquoise water and rich marine wildlife are worth 6+ hours of travel time in one day.

Where to stay for a Similan Islands day trip

I’ve listed below a couple accommodation options for every budget in both Phuket and Khao Lak, as these are the main spots from which you would usually start your Similan Islands day trip.

Budget – Phuket is one of the biggest backpacker destinations in Thailand. You will find lots of hostels for all moods. I’ve heard good things about Bodega Phuket Party Hostel if you’re in a party mood, and BearPacker Patong Hostel , if you’re looking for something more relaxed.

Mid-range: The Crib Patong – On my second trip to Phuket I stayed at the Crib Patong. This lovely hotel is located just minutes away from Bangla Road, the main road in Patong. It’s far enough that you don’t get all the noise but close enough that you can just walk over if you fancy joining the party.

What to pack for a day trip to Similan Islands

I have a whole article about what to pack for Thailand if you want a full item-by-item breakdown about what to put in your suitcase.

I wanted to keep this guide brief so I’ve listed below a couple essentials you would need specifically for the Similan Islands.

A waterproof bag – The waves can get pretty big during the boat journey and it’s not uncommon for splashes to come overboard, make sure your essentials are safe and dry in a waterproof bag!

A GoPro or similar underwater camera – You are about to snorkel in one of the most beautiful seas in the world, don’t forget to capture it!

Seasickness tablets – Hopefully you don’t need these, but better safe than sorry!

A fast drying towel – Bring something to dry yourself with and that you can use to lie on the beach. I love these because they don’t take up much space and dry quickly.

Final thoughts on doing a Similan Islands day trip from Phuket

If you’re looking for a beautiful island escape then look no further, the Similan Islands can give you just that. However be aware that visiting the Similan Islands on a day trip can be pretty intense.

I suggest you plan a longer Thailand itinerary, spending a few days in Bangkok , then travelling over to the islands and being ready to travel them slowly, without rushing.

Similan Islands Tour: Everything You Need to Know {Thailand}

If you are considering a Thailand excursion or snorkeling tour, then you MUST add a Similan Islands tour to your list! A Similan Islands snorkeling tour was the highlight of our Thailand vacation, and an absolute must do excursion for visitors to Thailand.

The Similan Islands are a group of 11 islands located in a protected national park in Thailand’s Andaman Sea. These islands are located within a protected national marine park, where you’ll fine soft sand beaches, crystal clear blue waters, and amazing snorkeling and dive sites.

Several tour providers offer full-day excursions to the Similan Islands, which are easily accessible from the Phuket area. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about the Similan Islands!

How to Get to Similan Islands

Wondering how to get to Similan Islands? The only way to visit the Similan Islands is through a Similan Islands day trip tour. You will not be able to visit the national park unless you are part of a tour group.

Your Similan Islands excursion typically will include transportation from your hotel to a ferry dock in the Khao Lak area, which is about an hour and a half north of Phuket. From the pier, it is about an hour and a half long speedboat ride to reach the Similan Islands.

How to Get to Similan Islands:

• Khao Lak to Similan Islands – The Similan Islands are very convienent from Khao Lak. You will depart from a pier located right in Khao Lak.
• Phuket to Similan Islands – To get to the Similan Islands from Phuket, you will need to drive an hour and a half north to get to the Khao Lak area.
• Krabi to Similan Islands – The Similan Islands is not a recommended day trip from Krabi due to the 3+ hour distance. If you are staying in Krabi, check out a Phi Phi Islands day trip instead.
• Koh Samui to Similan Islands – The Similan Islands is not a recommended day trip from Koh Samui due to the 3.5+ hour distance plus ferry ride. If you are staying in Koh Samui, check out a these Ko Samui day trips instead.

The Similan Islands are only open for visits from mid-October to mid-May, so make sure your Thailand trip falls during these dates!

Similan Islands Day Tour Price

How much does a Similan Islands tour cost? A Similan Islands day tour price will vary based on which tour operator you use. Our full-day excursion, which included transportation and lunch, cost us 3,781 THB ($107 USD) per person.

Overall, most Similan Islands tours range from $80 – $140 USD per person.

It is also the norm to tip your tour guide team at the end of the trip in Thai Baht. We tipped the crew of three 1000 THB ($28 USD).

The Best Similan Islands Tour

We booked the Early Bird Similan Islands Snorkel Tour with Siam Adventure World. This is a full-day Similan Islands tour that departs in the early morning in order to avoid the crowds.

Our tour with Siam Adventure World included complimentary round-trip transportation via a shared van with direct pick up at our resort in the north end of Phuket to their private pier in Khao Lak. It also included some small breakfast items as well as a very delicious and filling picnic lunch, plus soft drinks and water.

We were lucky enough to be in the tour group of an amazing operator named Nurse. Nurse was one of the nicest people we have met and absolutely hilarious. We had seen many positive reviews of Nurse online before booking and we felt very lucky to be part of her group.

Overall, Siam Adventure World’s Similan Islands tours receive excellent ratings and reviews online and we would highly recommend them.

Donald Duck Bay

The iconic “Donald Duck Bay” is located on the largest of the Similan Islands, Similan Island #8. This island gets its nickname from a large pile of rocks that resemble Donald Duck’s head. You can see these rocks as you approach the island as you are sailing in.

Due to the location this is usually the first stop for most tours. While you can spend time here swimming and enjoying the water, we recommend using this stop to hike to the view point at Sail Rock instead.

Sail Rock View Point

The Sail Rock view point is also located at Donald Duck Bay, on Island #8. To reach the view point, you will hike up a series of stairs and rocks. It is not difficult, but it will get your heart pumping – especially in the humidity and heat.

You do need to be very careful as there are no fences. One wrong move could lead to a terrible fall. I absolutely would not recommend doing this climb if it is rainy or muddy.

Also note that there is a clearly marked path up and a separate path to head down. We saw many tourists that were going the wrong way. This made it quite difficult to easily make the hike.

Once at the top, you will be treated to a stunning 180 degree views of the Bay. There are multiple photo op spots, including large boulders you can sit on and a flat standing area at the very top of the hike.

We were glad that we wore water shoes, as they were invaluable on the climb. The vast majority of the tourists were climbing in bare feet and I can’t imagine how uncomfortable that must have been.

Honeymoon Bay Similan Islands

One of the other island stops on our tour was Honeymoon Bay on Similan Island #4. Honeymoon Bay has an gorgeous stretch of beach and warm, clear water to swim in.

Our tour operator provided a picnic lunch at this island. There are plenty of picnic tables as well as restroom facilities. We had a delicious and extremely filling lunch.

We chose to spend our time on this island swimming in the gorgeous blue water. For those who are more active you have the option of walking about ten minutes across the island to visit Princess Bay and see the area where she stayed.

Similan Island Snorkeling

Our tour provided two snorkeling stops on our tour of the Similan Islands. They provided snorkels, masks, and fins. Life jackets were available if needed, though many find snorkeling to be very easy without one, even if you are not a strong swimmer.

During our trip we were very lucky to have calm, clear waters due to excellent weather. We had great visibility and saw many finish, including Nemos aka Clownfish.

I will note that the snorkeling at Similan Islands is probably more exciting for beginner or casual snorkelers. There is quite a bit of dead coral and there wasn’t an insane array of sea-life. The Similan Islands are beginning to see the effects of over tourism and you can see that in the condition of the reefs.

Either way, we enjoyed every moment out snorkeling in sea, and felt we had ample snorkel time during our trip.

Watch out for trigger fish! These large fish are very territorial and can serve a painful bite if you get too close. Trigger fish are very common, and we saw many during our snorkel stops.

Similan Islands Diving

While we are not certified divers, diving is an extremely popular activity in the islands. The Similan Islands has some of Thailand’s very best dive sites, including Koh Tachai, Koh Bon, and Richelieu Rock. Diving is also very popular during whaleshark season, February to April.

It can be difficult to find organized tours for diving online, as most day excursions focus on visiting the islands and snorkeling the shallow reefs. Serious divers may want to consider a multi-day liveaboard diving excursion.

What to Pack for a Similan Islands Excursion

If you are wondering what to pack for a Similan Islands Excursion, look no further!

Reef Safe Sunscreen: Sunscreen in a high SPF is a must due to the intense sun in Thailand. Make sure you choose a reef friendly sunscreen to help protect the delicate marine environment.

Motion Sickness Relief: Conditions will vary during your hour plus speedboat ride to the Similan Islands, and sea sickness is a real possibility! Even if you aren’t prone to motion sickness, you may want to pack a remedy just in case.

Sun Hat : Most Similan Islands excursions are full day adventures. That is a lot of time in the sun! I recommend a sun hat to keep your face protected. Bonus points for packable hats the fold up into your suitcase!.

Water Shoes: Water shoes are a must! They look and feel just like sneakers, but are designed for wearing in the water. We were so glad we had water shoes when we hiked up to the top of the Donald Duck Bay look out point. We felt so bad for the people hiking barefooted!

Dry Bag : Instead of bringing a beach bag on your tour, bring a dry bag. Dry bags are waterproof and will keep your belongings safe both on the boat and when you disembark and go on shore.

Fast Dry Towel: You will need to pack your own towel for this excursion. A small quick dry towel is perfect for drying yourself off quickly once you get back on the boat. Plus, it takes up very little space in your luggage compared to a traditional beach towel.

Go Pro: You will definitely want to capture videos and photos of the amazing underwater sights with a Go Pro! We love the value of the slightly older model GoPro Hero 9. We also highly recommend a GoPro dome, which assists in taking those iconic half in, half out shots on Instagram.

In October 2020, the Government reduced the number of visitors to the island, – Visitors have to purchase a Marine Park ticket to enter the national park … we do this for you after we receive your payment.

Marine park tickets are not transferable for 1-day access the day you choose to go, tickets are issued and sold first come first served, meaning your trip is not transferable and cannot be rescheduled by the marine park rangers under any circumstances.

NOTE: This tour only operates during the High Season (from 16 Oct to 12 May). Similans tend to be busy between Thai National public holidays  – as well as Christmas and New Year. Tours are not recommended for pregnant ladies, infants or people with back or neck problems.

This Similan Islands day trip speed boat trip is suitable for ages 4 years up to 60 years. However, this trip is not available for a child under 1 year, pregnant women, or women who may be trying to become pregnant. This trip is not suitable for any person with spinal, back, or neck problems. The highlights of the trip are Snorkeling and swimming and we must recommend that you wear a life jacket at all times while you are in the water , the trip also involves walking on the island and sightseeing. The tour itineraries can be changed depending on the local weather conditions It will be decided by the tour leader and boat captain on your trip. We may also incorporate this trip with other snorkeling & tour operators/companies running similar trips to the same locations due to demand for the Trip.

A convenient elektrichka route (in fact, the first elektrichka route in Russia) runs frequently all day between Mytishchi and Moscow's Yaroslavsky Train Station. Rapid trains (Sputniks) bound to Pushkino and Bolshevo also stop here.

You can also get here pretty easily by taking the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya metro line to the end at Medvedkovo and there catch a bus or marshrutka to the Mytishchi center from the metro station.
