Loretta at Secret Escapes has been amazing and so supportive to reschedule our booking with hotel. We unfortunately could not use the booking due to my husband having heart attack on holiday in Cornwall and had to stay in Truro Hospital for 10 days, so we had to cancel our booking for hotel we were going to stay as a halfway stop over travelling back to Hertfordhshire. Booking experience good, hotel disappointing

No problem at all booking with Secret Escapes, used them for many years and always deliver. Only downside was the hotel which appeared needed maintenance. Big stain on bedroom carpet, shower water didn't run away, exterior needed painting.

Wonderful customer service/booking teams

Saw a hotel stay on Secret Escapes which sounded ideal for us but we needed a different type of room from that shown. I sent an enquiry to customer service who replied next day saying they would contact the hotel and within another 24 hours, they had contacted the hotel to make our request and confirmed their OK back to us. Now really looking forward to our stay at Battlesteads Hotel. I cannot fault the whole booking process as payment was easy to make and confirmation prompt. All contact from Secret Escapes was made in a friendly and efficient manner.

Found a great last minute escape to…

Found a great last minute escape to north Wales. The deal included dinner, b n b in a lovely lagoon view room. We did call the hotel upfront and they could not match the deal themselves- the same cost was room b n b only. Will use again

When we wanted a weekend away to celebrate our anniversary l have chosen to stay at the Thornburg castle hotel , after we selected the date and proceed to payment all is good upto that point when you need the code from the card company to complete l was slow to remember the code from text messages and l have to go back to message to look again and when l tried to back to the website l have to start all over again, but this time the date we selected was not available but 3 days later l got a email from Secret escape to say it is available so as l eager to book it l just completed the reservation without noticing the price have changed from the original of 1441.60 pounds to 1696.00 which is 250.00 more , l feel being cheated .

I have booked three different trips this year with secret escapes. Easy to use and great deals. When checked with other sites secret escapes had good deals with extras ie dinner for no cost compared to other sites.

Whilst Secret Escapes offer the…

Whilst Secret Escapes offer the package, the booking fulfilment was performed by their partner. What was offered by Secret Escapes was not what we were able to book. As I added excursions to the trip this apparently changed the package and moved us to an older, smaller cruise vessel with no option to alter this. I also had to pay a supplement to have direct flights. Although I had to pay when I booked I am still unsure on what we will actually get as the agent was very evasive on this. We have paid for an upper or middle cabin and were told that this would have a Juliette balcony, but the vessel we are booked on does not appear to have this type of cabin. We will have to wait until November to see what we get but at present I feel that there may be a noticeable difference between what was offered by Secret Escapes and what we will actually get.

Bad experience at Old Quay House, Fowey

Secret Escapes need to be certain that the description of the hotel given in their offer is accurate. Our bad experience at the hotel was only in part the fault of Secret Escapes - far more disappointing was the totally inadequate service at the hotel. Secret Escapes described the parking as 'nearby'; in fact it was 800 yds away - hardly nearby. Furthermore they described the room, which was on the second floor up very steep stairs, as 'superior'; by no stretch of the imagination could the room be described as superior. It was very small, hardly room to walk round the small double bed; the furniture was tacky and to visit the en suite shower room it was necessary to go to the floor below. We had paid in advance for three nights DB and B. When we arrived, the toilet in our ensuite would not flush; we reported it to a manager (in the absence of anyone at reception until the following morning), who was serving dinner, but he did nothing until the following morning when he told the receptionist, who by 10am had not bothered to call a plumber. When we visited the toilet in the common parts of the hotel, the Gents had faeces on the wall just below the toilet roll holder. So we left and ended up considerably out of pocket. Dinner was unappetising and accompanied by loud tinny music.

Booking with jetline could not be simpler

Booking was simple and efficient. As son as I expressed an interest in a particular holiday package I was contacted I was contacted by an agent of jetline cruises, who explained everything very clearly. Within a period of 20 minutes he sent me all the flights/hotels and cruises details with the corresponding price. He went through every details of the package and what was included and also checking with me personal details. Making the deposit was also easy. Once confirmed within a few days all the booking details were confirmed by Jetline cruises with further attachments including invoice/ ATOL Certificate/Booking Companion and Terms and conditions.

I no longer want to travel. Can I cancel my trip? What if the country I'm planning to visit suddenly requires me to get extra documentation (visas etc)? Where a country changes its entry requirements and asks for extra documentation, we or your travel provider will be in touch to advise on how to do this. I have booked a hotel, but not flights, in a country subject to restrictions from COVID-19. What are my options? Where you have only booked a hotel through Secret Escapes, your contract is with the hotel directly and unfortunately we cannot offer a refund. We recommend you contact them as they may be able to offer you the option to re-book your stay. Alternatively, your travel insurance may be able to cover the costs of cancellation. I bought Roomer to protect my trip and have had an email cancelling my policy. What is happening? We were not made aware of this change by Roomer and have learned about this on 13 March from members. Our contracting team works hard hand-picking some fabulous deals, and our flash sale offers beat the best price you will find on the open market during our period of sale. We scour the internet far and wide to make sure we offer the lowest rates available. You shouldn't have to shop around - we guarantee our exclusive rates are not bettered elsewhere.

If we were to ever see a lower price for one of our flash sales, we'd immediately cancel the sale and either push for better discounts and extras for our members (like champagne on arrival, a room upgrade or a three-course meal) if we were to feature that hotel or holiday again, or just drop the deal altogether.

Flash sales is what we do, and we hope you agree we do it well. We'll do our best to inspire you to try something, or somewhere, different. But, we also know that you may come to our site already with an idea of where and when to go away. If you search for a specific destination, with dates, and we have none – or a limited number – of flash sales available, we may show you hotels from our collection – these hotels are marked in teal colour displayed underneath our flash sales, and are price-matched against the best price online. They're not flash sales, but recommended hotels that we don't have a flash sale for right now. These hotels – though displayed at the best online price, are not as discounted as our flash sales, which are better than the best online price. What happens if I find one of your flash sales cheaper elsewhere?

How do you calculate the price and the discounts?

All of our flash sales are sold at exclusive members-only rates, cheaper than anywhere else online. The top rate advertised is the highest possible saving you can achieve with a particular offer and usually - but not always - represents the lowest price you could pay. Sometimes you may end up paying even less than the rate advertised, but there may only be a few available dates at these super low prices. The 'up to' price reductions are valid when the sale is set live.

We advertise the price after checking and re-checking the rates numerous times before setting a sale live. When a sale is set live on our site, we always ensure that our 'lead-in' rate - the price advertised at the top of the offer page - constitutes at least 10% of our total number of available dates for that sale.

Are Smart Stays hotels guaranteed to be rated four and five-star? No, but they're still hand-picked by us with the same level of care and consideration that we pay to our core hotels and holidays. How do I buy?

You can buy just as you would on any other travel website, or you can pay S$50 to hold a room while you decide.

What’s a ‘hold’?

Our members can ‘hold’ a date until the end of the sale by paying  S$50 . Organising a holiday takes time, we know that. Especially when you’re travelling with others, organising several trips or just need time to plan - we understand that you may not be able to commit to a booking straight away.

To give you a bit more time to ponder, you can pay  S$50  to reserve a date in the calendar while you decide, meaning that no-one else will be able to book the date you hold (which will remain held until the offer expires). If you decide to book your trip, the  S$50  will automatically come off the total price and, if not, no problem - we'll credit the money back to your Secret Escapes account.

Important - a hold is NOT a deposit on a booking and is not a guaranteed, completed or confirmed booking. It's just a handy feature to prevent other members from pipping you to the post and booking this date.

Unfortunately, because the hotels and holidays that we feature are available to buy elsewhere (albeit not at the exclusive rates our members enjoy), the supplier may occasionally sell out while you're deciding. If that does happen, the date will be closed to sale and all holds will automatically be cancelled and the money refunded as credit on your Secret Escapes account. We will, of course, notify you if this should happen.

How do i share secret escapes with my friends.

We love it when people share - in fact, we’ve total incentivised it. You receive credit when the friends you invite (using your very own referral link) join Secret Escapes. S$10 when five of your friends join,  S$50  when 25 join and S$100 when 50 of your friends have joined using your link. You also get  S$50  credit for each purchase your friends make with us.

What happens if more than one person recommends Secret Escapes to someone, who gets the S$50 credit?

The person eligible for the  S$50  credit would be the one whose email the user clicked on.

Will there be a cash alternative to S$50 credit for recommending a friend?

No. The  S$50  credit can only be used against purchases on Secret Escapes.

What is my relationship as a customer with secret escapes once i’ve booked.

Secret Escapes is a travel agent, hand-picking and showcasing unbeatable and exclusive deals for its members. Once a customer has made a booking on Secret Escapes, the customer has effectively entered a contract with the hotel or supplier with which the booking was made. Why? Well, Secret Escapes is selling the hotel or tour operator’s product, and therefore it is up to the hotel, tour operator or supplier in question to ensure the customer gets what they paid for.

Where do you get your star ratings from?

We hand-pick the hotels and holidays we offer to you guys - our members. The star rating is a useful classification of the accommodation and reflects the standard of the establishment in its own country. A five-star London hotel may feel different to a five-star hotel in Athens or Istanbul, but we go to great lengths to ensure that each hotel we sell reaches and exceeds OUR standards, which we feel are far more important than an arbitrary star rating.

What if I have a complaint while I’m away?

If you’re unhappy with any aspect of your hotel or holiday and you feel the experience you bought is/was not up to scratch - be it your room, the service, the food or the cleanliness - please take this issue up with the hotel management, your tour operator or resort representative. They will be able to deal with any issue you may have there and then, and we will assist you as much as possible in getting a resolution.

In massively rare cases, a customer may feel that the hotel or holiday is/was not as advertised by us - essentially, you didn’t feel you received what you bought - again, immediately notify the hotel management, your tour operator or resort representative in the first instance for a speedy resolution. However, please also contact us on [email protected] We’re here to make booking luxury travel a truly enjoyable experience, but we also need to know if things aren’t as they should be. Your feedback is incredibly important to us.

What if my booking is changed or cancelled?

We take immense care in making sure all details, prices and information we provide is correct. Very occasionally, we may have to correct an error in a deal we’ve advertised - this may take place before you book or just after. If we have to make a change to your booking after it has been made, we will do so having informed you as soon as possible, in line with our terms and conditions. Again - this is very rare.

Booking experience good, hotel disappointing

No problem at all booking with Secret Escapes, used them for many years and always deliver. Only downside was the hotel which appeared needed maintenance. Big stain on bedroom carpet, shower water didn't run away, exterior needed painting.

Wonderful customer service/booking teams

Saw a hotel stay on Secret Escapes which sounded ideal for us but we needed a different type of room from that shown. I sent an enquiry to customer service who replied next day saying they would contact the hotel and within another 24 hours, they had contacted the hotel to make our request and confirmed their OK back to us. Now really looking forward to our stay at Battlesteads Hotel. I cannot fault the whole booking process as payment was easy to make and confirmation prompt. Found a great last minute escape to north Wales. The deal included dinner, b n b in a lovely lagoon view room. We did call the hotel upfront and they could not match the deal themselves- the same cost was room b n b only. Will use again

When we wanted a weekend away to celebrate our anniversary l have chosen to stay at the Thornburg castle hotel , after we selected the date and proceed to payment all is good upto that point when you need the code from the card company to complete l was slow to remember the code from text messages and l have to go back to message to look again and when l tried to back to the website l have to start all over again, but this time the date we selected was not available but 3 days later l got a email from Secret escape to say it is available so as l eager to book it l just completed the reservation without noticing the price have changed from the original of 1441.60 pounds to 1696.00 which is 250.00 more , l feel being cheated .

Whilst Secret Escapes offer the…

Whilst Secret Escapes offer the package, the booking fulfilment was performed by their partner. What was offered by Secret Escapes was not what we were able to book. As I added excursions to the trip this apparently changed the package and moved us to an older, smaller cruise vessel with no option to alter this. I also had to pay a supplement to have direct flights. Although I had to pay when I booked I am still unsure on what we will actually get as the agent was very evasive on this. We have paid for an upper or middle cabin and were told that this would have a Juliette balcony, but the vessel we are booked on does not appear to have this type of cabin. We will have to wait until November to see what we get but at present I feel that there may be a noticeable difference between what was offered by Secret Escapes and what we will actually get.

Bad experience at Old Quay House, Fowey

Secret Escapes need to be certain that the description of the hotel given in their offer is accurate. Our bad experience at the hotel was only in part the fault of Secret Escapes - far more disappointing was the totally inadequate service at the hotel. Secret Escapes described the parking as 'nearby'; in fact it was 800 yds away - hardly nearby. Furthermore they described the room, which was on the second floor up very steep stairs, as 'superior'; by no stretch of the imagination could the room be described as superior. It was very small, hardly room to walk round the small double bed; the furniture was tacky and to visit the en suite shower room it was necessary to go to the floor below. We had paid in advance for three nights DB and B. When we arrived, the toilet in our ensuite would not flush; we reported it to a manager (in the absence of anyone at reception until the following morning), who was serving dinner, but he did nothing until the following morning when he told the receptionist, who by 10am had not bothered to call a plumber. When we visited the toilet in the common parts of the hotel, the Gents had faeces on the wall just below the toilet roll holder. So we left and ended up considerably out of pocket. Dinner was unappetising and accompanied by loud tinny music.

Booking with jetline could not be simpler

Booking was simple and efficient. As son as I expressed an interest in a particular holiday package I was contacted I was contacted by an agent of jetline cruises, who explained everything very clearly. Within a period of 20 minutes he sent me all the flights/hotels and cruises details with the corresponding price. He went through every details of the package and what was included and also checking with me personal details. Making the deposit was also easy. Once confirmed within a few days all the booking details were confirmed by Jetline cruises with further attachments including invoice/ ATOL Certificate/Booking Companion and Terms and conditions.

U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich, jailed in Russia on espionage charges, to stand trial

U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich , who has been jailed for over a year in Russia on espionage charges, will stand trial in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, authorities said Thursday.

An indictment of the Wall Street Journal reporter has been finalized and his case was filed to the Sverdlovsky Regional Court in the city about 870 miles east of Moscow, according to Russia’s Prosecutor General’s office.

Gershkovich is accused of “gathering secret information” on orders from the CIA about Uralvagonzavod, a facility in the Sverdlovsk region that produces and repairs military equipment, the Prosecutor General’s office said in a statement, revealing for the first time the details of the accusations against him.

The officials didn’t provide any evidence to back up the accusations. There was no word on when the trial would begin.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich marks a year behind bars Friday following his arrest by Russian authorities who accuse him of espionage.

Gershkovich was detained while on a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg in March 2023 and accused of spying for the United States. The reporter, his employer and the U.S. government denied the allegations, and Washington designated him as wrongfully detained.

The Federal Security Service, or FSB, alleged at the time he was acting on U.S. orders to collect state secrets but also provided no evidence.

Uralvagonzavod, a state tank and railroad car factory in the city of Nizhny Tagil about 60 miles north of Yekaterinburg, became known in 2011-12 as a bedrock of support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Plant foreman Igor Kholmanskikh appeared on Putin’s annual phone-in program in December 2011 and denounced mass protests occurring in Moscow at the time as a threat to “stability,” proposing that he and his colleagues travel to the capital to help suppress the unrest. A week later, Putin appointed Kholmanskikh to be his envoy in the region.

Putin has said he believed a deal could be reached to free Gershkovich, hinting he would be open to swapping him for a Russian national imprisoned in Germany. That appeared to be Vadim Krasikov, who is serving a life sentence for the 2019 killing in Berlin of a Georgian citizen of Chechen descent.

A Moscow court has ordered Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich to remain in jail on espionage charges until at least late June.

Asked last week by the Associated Press about Gershkovich, Putin said the U.S. is “taking energetic steps” to secure his release. He told international news agencies in St. Petersburg that any such releases “aren’t decided via mass media” but through a “discreet, calm and professional approach.”

“And they certainly should be decided only on the basis of reciprocity,” he added in an allusion to a potential prisoner swap.

Gershkovich faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

He was the first U.S. journalist taken into custody on espionage charges since Nicholas Daniloff in 1986 at the height of the Cold War. Gershkovich’s arrest shocked foreign journalists in Russia, even though the country had enacted increasingly repressive laws on freedom of speech after sending troops into Ukraine.

The son of Soviet emigres who settled in New Jersey, Gershkovich was fluent in Russian and moved to the country in 2017 to work for the Moscow Times newspaper before being hired by the Journal in 2022.

Since his arrest, Gershkovich has been held at Moscow’s Lefortovo Prison, a notorious czarist-era prison used during Josef Stalin’s purges, when executions were carried out in its basement.

The Biden administration has sought to negotiate his release, but Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it would consider a prisoner swap only after a verdict in his trial.

U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy, who has regularly visited Gershkovich in prison and attended his court hearings, has called the charges against him “fiction” and said that Russia is “using American citizens as pawns to achieve political ends.”

Since sending troops to Ukraine, Russian authorities have detained several U.S. nationals and other Westerners, seemingly bolstering that idea.
