How to Get Here

National Park Brijuni Pula is easily accessible and offers an adventurous journey to its visitors. Located off the coast of Pula and overlooking the small fishing village of Fažana, the National Park is reachable by a quick and scenic ferry ride.

• Ferry from Fažana: The most common way to reach the National Park Brijuni is by ferry from the port of Fažana. Ferries operate several times a day and take around 15 minutes to reach the main island of the Brijuni archipelago, Veliki Brijun. Keep in mind, the ferry schedule can change depending on the season, so make sure to check the latest schedule before your trip.
• By Car to Fažana: If you’re staying in Pula or nearby, driving to Fažana is an easy option. The drive is around 8 km and takes approximately 15 minutes. There’s a large car park in Fažana where you can leave your vehicle before boarding the ferry.
• Public Transport to Fažana: From Pula’s city center, you can take a local bus to Fažana. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes. Once in Fažana, the ferry port is just a short walk away.

Fažana offers several parking options for visitors to Brijuni:

Croatia is full of  natural beauty , but perhaps none like Brijuni National Park (NP Brijuni). This is a true gem somewhere you should put on your visit list this summer. There is plenty you need to know so you can plan your visit correctly, and that is what we have in this guide for you.

NP Brijuni is part of the Brijuni Archipelago. This is a series of stunning islands situated close to the coast of Istria . The island of Veliki Brijuni is the main island visitors can head to, packed with things to see and do. There is also a lot of history to explore. There’s plenty to keep you occupied!

About Brijuni Croatia

The Brijuni archipelago is a very short distance from the mainland , making it extremely easy to visit. The stretch of water between the main island and the mainland called the Fazana Channel, is only two miles long.

However, the whole archipelago is quite large, covering around 736 hectares. You’ll find more than 150 different bird species here, so remember those binoculars! The lush green land and plentiful summer sun mean it’s also a hotspot for flora, fauna, and abundant wildlife.

But it’s not all about wildlife either. The park has plenty of history, as it has been passed from pillar to post over the years. The archipelago is full of ruins and architecture to explore, with links to an ancient Neolithic settlement, Byzantine settlements, and Austro-Hungarian rule. Brijuni Minor Fortress is a must-visit, serving as the main Pula naval base during Austro-Hungarian rule.

The archipelago has 12 small islands and two large ones. The large ones are Veli Brijun and Mali Brijun.

The island has been visited by some very famous people, including Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Richard Burton.

Island Sightseeing Tour

Most people arrive by boat from Fazana, which will drop you off at the main pier on the largest island. At this point, you can join the island sightseeing tour, which is one of the best ways to give yourself an overview of the island. You’ll be able to check out the remains of the Roman Villa Rustica in Verige Bay, and there are also several other stop-off points, including small churches, dinosaur footprints, a museum, and a golf course.

The island isn’t huge, and finding your way around is very easy. If you want to venture off and explore the island on your own steam, you can rent a golf cart or a bicycle. This can be done after the island sightseeing tour, or you can venture off on your own without any instruction.

There are countless beaches where you can enjoy the summer sun, and you can also swim around the entire coastline if you feel active enough! Head to Saluga Bay and Sveti Jerolim Beach for the best beach days with facilities to make your time more enjoyable.

Wildlife & Nature Spotting

There are countless types of flora and fauna to enjoy in the park, as well as wildlife and plentiful kinds of birds. There are many walking trails to enjoy, so you can quickly head off and explore the local nature without too many crowds. Remember to take your litter with you as you go, and don’t leave any trace of your presence.

Ulysses Theatre

During the summer months, there are regular live performances at Ulysses Theatre. This is located on Mali Brijun island, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to enjoy modern and classical theatre performances in the open air.

Where To Stay On Brijuni Islands

There are two hotels on the main island of Veli Brijun: Hotel Neptun and Hotel Karmen. However, it’s advisable to book ahead of time to avoid disappointment. Camping is prohibited, so these are your only accommodation options. However, you could also choose to stay in private accommodation in Fazana and use the ferry to go to the park daily.

As far as facilities are concerned, the two main beaches we mentioned have cafes and restaurants, although don’t expect a huge choice. The hotels also have good-quality restaurants. It may be a good idea to take your own refreshments or picnic and remember to take your litter with you when you leave.

How To Get To Brijuni National Park

Brijuni National Park is only a short ferry ride away from the mainland. The easiest way is to get the boat from Fazana in Istria .

Brijuni National Park from Pula: If you’re staying in Pula , you can take the number 21 bus and travel the short 8km to get the boat.

The ferry regularly sails throughout the day during the summer months.

Alternatively, you can make life a little easier by booking an excursion to Brijuni National Park. These are available from Porec, Rovinj , and Pula.

There is an entrance fee to get into the park, which changes depending on the time of year. You can expect to pay between 17 and 28 euros, depending on when you’re visiting.

Brijuni Islands National Park is situated in the northern Adriatic Sea off the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. It is separated from the peninsula by the Fažana strait, which is only 3 kilometers wide.

One of the oldest olive trees in the Mediterranean is located on the island of Veliki Brijun. This famous olive tree is more than 1.600 years old, and its olives are still used for olive oil production.

When to visit Brijuni National Park, Croatia

The Brijuni Islands are a gorgeous piece of nature throughout the whole year. However, the national park is easiest to reach during summer when boats and ferries are plentiful.

In summertime, you can go swimming and diving and enjoy the sun and the perfect Mediterranean climate. In July and August, you can enjoy cultural programs such as the music festival called Podium Festival and the Ulysses Theater.

How to visit Brijuni National Park in Croatia

To get to Brijuni National Park, you first need to travel to Fažana, a small town located on the southwest coast of Istria. The only transport to Brijuni is boats, and they do not transport cars. If you don’t take public transport to Fažana, you will have to park your car somewhere in Fažana and then take a boat to Brijuni.

The boat travels from Fažana to the island of Veliki Brijun, which takes around 20 minutes. The departure schedules from Fažana to Brijuni and Brijuni to Fažana are available here .

How to reach brijuni.

The Brijuni Islands are located in the south of the Istrian peninsula, north of the entrance to Pula Port. 

By car it is possible to go all the way to Fažana, near Pula, while very good traffic connections enable comfortable driving on the Istrian Y highway (“Istarski ipsilon”). There are traffic signs on this road which clearly indicate the direction and the distance from the Brijuni Islands. 

For those planning a trip by one of the direct flight connections, there are several options: Pula Airport is 15 km away, the airport on the island of Krk is 120 km away, while the airport of Trieste is 150 km away.   

How to visit the Brijuni National Park?

To visit the National Park, you have to board a boat in the small town of Fažana. In the center of the town, there is a jetty from which the ship departs, and before boarding it is necessary to buy tickets at our office in Fažana, while the possibility of online ticket purchase is new for our visitors. 

Arrival by boat

The ride lasts about 15 minutes, and during that time you can enjoy on the deck with a beautiful view of Brijuni, Fažana Channel and the south-west of the Istrian peninsula.

After docking in the Veliki Brijun port, you will be welcomed by a tourist train and a guide with whom you will take a peek into the world of Brijuni Islands.

The Brijuni (or, in Italian, Brioni )  Islands National Park is only 6km from Pula , off the Istrian coast. There are two main islands (Mali Brijun and Veli Brijun)and about a dozen islets but only the largest island, Veli Brijun can be visited (unless you have your own boat). It's an extraordinarily beautiful island, carpeted with ancient pines and olive trees, surrounded by a sparkling sea.

The other islands are Vanga, Sveti Marko, Gaz, Obiljak, Supin, Galija, Grunj, Pusti, Vrsar, Jerolim and Kotez.

One of the reasons to visit the Brijuni islands is its connection with antiquity. The islands were inhabited in the neolithic era, and then fell under Roman rule in 177AD. Upon the collapse of the Roman Empire, the islands first were ruled by the Ostrogoths and then came within the Byzantine Empire until 776AD. The Franks and the Aquilean patriarchs were the next rulers and in 1331 fell under the rule of the Venetian Empire. They were allowed to deteriorate into malarial swamps until the late 19th century when the were purchased by an industrialist and turned into a swanky resort. It was at this point that the hotels on Veli Brijuni were built, waterworks were built and the island was groomed for swimming and strolling. After WWII, the Brijuni islands became the summer residence of Marshal Tito.

Flora and Fauna

Veli Brijuni is an extremely well-manicured park. The native Mediterranean plants and trees have been supplemented with imported species such as stone pine, pine, cedar, sequoia, eucalyptus and bamboo. When Tito was in residence during the summer he invited high-profile celebrities and politicians to come visit. Many brought exotic animals as gifts (!) who were then housed in a fenced-in portion of the island.

Visiting the Brijuni Islands National Park

If you stay in a hotel on Veliki Brijun , you have the run of the island. There are no cars but you can easily rent a bike or a golf cart to tool around.

Otherwise, the best way is to arrange an excursion through the Brijuni National Park service, based in Fazana. You can reserve by telephone but you should do it at least a day in advance. Your visit includes the services of an English-speaking guide and a mini-train to take you around. The price depends on the season but note that you pay the same price whether or not you take the tour.

There are a number of daily boats back and forth between Fazana and the National Park. Nothing stops you from staying on after the tour and exploring on your own or lolling on the beach. In fact, it's highly advisable! The water is unbelievably clear and the fish life is abundant. It's a great place for snorkelling.

The Brijuni National Park Tour

The tour begins at the harbour in front of the Hotel Neptun . The order may vary, but you're sure to see:

Tito Museum with photos and memorabilia of the former Yugoslav leader's time on the island. It's a good way to connect with a part of Croatia's history. Former quarries, now a pretty and restful space Olive tree about 1600 years old Tito's former cadillac in which he tried to seduce Gina Lollobrigida St Mary's Church from the 13th century Swamp left as an example of the swamps which once covered the island Safari Park with zebras and an elephant. There are also native Istrian fauna such as Istrian bulls and goats. Roman ruins

Accommodation in the Brijuni Islands

There are three hotels on Veli Brijun but no private accommodation. Try the Hotel Neptun or the Hotel Istra . Many people choose to stay in Fazana.

The Brijuni Tourist Service (tel 052-525 883) is in Fazana , on the coast, and sells tickets to the park which include the boat and guided tour.

Day trip to National park Brijuni

How to get to Brijuni:

The “ entrance point ” to national park Brijuni can be found in Fazana , from where there is a boat connection to the main island Veli Brijuni, the boat departure times you can see here. Some of the departures included a guided tour on the island , so check with the park administration, if you wish to join a guided tour. If you want to see the park on your own hand, your entrance ticket ( which by the way cost the same in either case ) still grants you access to the museum, the safari park, and all the other interesting stuff you find on Brijuni, and you may of course also use the “ island train ”, to get around on the island.

• With Car , from Pula centre there is about 10 km to Fazana , parking (paid) can be found close to the waterside, which is just a few hundred meters from where the boat leaves to Fazana. The ticket office is less than 100 meter from the pier .
• With bus , from Pula it takes about 30 minutes with bus number 21 to Fazana , you can see departure times here , please not that the departure times during weekends are limited.

In addition to the tours to Veli Brijuni , there are also several excursions to other parts of the Brijuni islands, ask the park administration about the options available.

If you are not too tired, when you get back from the island, we can recommend that you spend an hour or more on seeing Fazana , which is a quite need small town.

Pula Croatia – Holidays in Pula

Pula is the largest town and the administrative centre of Istria, but today Pula is also a modern tourist destination. In the summer months tourist are offered an extensive program of cultural events, among the most famous events is the Pula Film festival and the Histria Festival . The latter is a music festival which takes place in the 2000 years old Roman Amphitheatre, the Arena. Normally the Histria festival has real world stars like e.g. Elton John on the program, so it is for sure something to consider if you plan to spend your holidays in Pula.

In terms of overnight there is plenty of private accommodation in Pula . As Pula is relatively big in terms of surface, I recommend you to check in which city part you will be staying. I also recommend checking out how often the city buses run from the specific city part. In the suburb called Verudela a large number of Hotels can be found, but of course it is also possible to find hotels in the centre of Pula. The campsite offer inside city border of Pula is limited but in the larger areas of Pula there are plenty of great campsites .

In terms of restaurants Pula has more or less everything to offer. The highlight is a restaurant run by two chefs who used to work for the world famous restaurant El Bulli in Spain . Restaurants can be found in all parts of the town. Of course, the majority of restaurants is concentrated around the centre of the city.
