Whitsunday Islands travel FAQs

When is the best time to visit the whitsundays.

Any time of year is a good time to visit the Whitsundays. As a tropical destination, the archipelago experiences hot, rainy summers and warm, dry winters. Average high temperatures linger between 74°F and 88°F, while lows average a mild 63°F to 77°F. The water temperature averages a pleasant 73°F to 82°F throughout the year.

If you want to go snorkeling or diving, you may be better off planning your trip in the winter (dry) season. Rainfall in the summer tends to come in the form of brief tropical downpours, but it can impact water visibility. Whales can also be spotted in winter from May to October during their annual migration from Antarctica.

If you visit between October and May, AKA stinger season, take extra caution when swimming in the ocean by wearing a stinger suit to protect yourself from possible jellyfish stings.

How to get to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays can be accessed via one of the coastal towns on the mainland, with the most popular jumping off point being Airlie Beach. There are two main airports in the Whitsundays: Great Barrier Reef Airport located on Hamilton Island, and Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine which is the closest airport to Airlie Beach.

If you fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport, you'll need to drive or take a transfer to Airlie Beach. This is easy to arrange with buses meeting all incoming flights. The transfer from Whitsunday Coast Airport to Airlie Beach takes around 25 minutes.

How do I get around the Whitsundays?

Passenger ferries operate a regular daily service between the mainland and the major Whitsunday islands. You can also do a sailing day tour to explore the archipelago's many highlights.

What should I pack for the Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays tend to be a casual place so you can leave your fancy clothes at home. As a top destination for water-based adventures, swimwear is a must. The same goes for sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat (even in winter) as the sun reflects off the water and white sand. Bring all the essentials, including basic medications, as shops are few and far between on the islands.

Can I use my cell phone in the Whitsundays?

You'll pick up cell phone signal in and around major tourist hubs such as Airlie Beach, but there's limited or no coverage in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're out at sea or on more remote islands.

What is the internet access like in the Whitsundays?

You'll find wi-fi in bars, cafes and restaurants in major tourist hubs like Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island. There's limited or no wi-fi available in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're sailing or exploring more remote islands.

What should I wear in the Whitsundays?

There's no need to get dressed up, even if you're staying at one of the resorts in the Whitsundays. Casual clothes or active wear are fine during the day. Smart casual (think jeans and a t-shirt) is the norm for restaurants at the resorts.

Is it safe to swim in the Whitsundays?

The short answer is yes. That being said, there are some no-swimming zones. You should also listen to local advice and stay alert at all times.

Some of the top things to be aware of when swimming in the Whitsundays include stingers, crocs and sharks.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Itinerary: One week in Queensland from Whitsundays to Cairns

Queensland’s tropical north is home to some of the most spectacular natural wonders in Australia, making it the perfect place to discover the tropics. This itinerary for 1 week in Queensland from Whitsundays to Cairns includes the Great Barrier Reef , the Daintree Rainforest , Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation , to name just a few! I travelled with my best friend Chloe on this trip, and we stayed in Airlie Beach, Townsville and Cairns.

The Great Barrier Reef may be this region’s major draw, but don’t let your adventures stop there. There is so much to do in Queensland’s tropics and it’s worth at least a week of your time. It was a busy week but we had enough island time to unwind in between our many day trips and excursions.

Queensland Trip Highlights

Day 1: brisbane to airlie beach, hamilton island, whitehaven beach, bus from airlie beach to townsville, magnetic island, townsville accommodation, cairns night markets, cairns accommodation, kuranda skyrail, australian butterfly sanctuary, kuranda scenic railway, day 6: day trip from cairns to green island, daintree rainforest, port douglas, daintree treehouse, daintree river cruise, cape tribulation, day 8: cairns to brisbane, travel tips for queensland’s tropics, stinger season, crocodiles in queensland, travel pace.

Snorkel Green Island Great Barrier Reef

  • Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef
  • Swimming in Mossman Gorge in the Daintree Rainforest
  • Visiting the only place in the world where two UNESCO World Heritage Sites collide, at the beautiful  Cape Tribulation
  • Kicking back on the best beach in Australia, on  Whitehaven Beach   in the Whitsundays
  • The scenic journeys to and from the mountain-top rainforest village of Kuranda, via the  Kuranda Skyrail and the Scenic Railway .
  • T aking the scenic route along the Great Tropical Drive – one of Australia’s prettiest driving routes.
  • The view over Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas
  • Seeing a baby crocodile in the wild in the Daintree River
  • Visiting the biggest butterfly sanctuary in the world in Kuranda
  • Sailing through the Whitsundays archipelago
  • Swimming in the calm clear waters on Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island Whitsundays Australia

The first leg of our trip was in the Whitsundays, an archipelago of 74 islands off the coast of Queensland. It’s one of the dreamiest travel destinations in Australia!

You can stay on one of the luxurious islands, like Hamilton Island , Hayman Island or Daydream Island, or you can stay at Airlie Beach on the mainland. We stayed in Airlie Beach, but next time I’d stay on Hamilton or Hayman Island to enjoy more island time.

Airlie Beach doesn’t have an airport, so we flew to Prosperine and pre-booked a seat on a transfer bus to Airlie Beach. Pre-booking is essential, I can’t stress this enough.  The transfer was $36 with Whitsunday Transit – it would be a $100+ cab ride!

We spent the first afternoon relaxing in Airlie Beach, which is a very pretty coastal town with vivid turquoise waters.

Accommodation:  This was my first stay in a hostel! These days I’d stay somewhere different, but we were very happy with our private double room at Airlie Beach Magnums .

Day 2: Day Trip to Hamilton Island & Whitehaven Beach

Our first full day was spent visiting two of the most beautiful islands in the Whitsundays. Since we weren’t staying on any of the islands, we decided to take a tour with Cruise Whitsundays that would give us four hours on Hamilton Island and two hours on Whitehaven Beach.

Hamilton Island is a very popular island with a number of accommodation options, ranging from luxury resorts to relaxed family friendly accommodation

Hamilton Island has a picturesque marina, with sparkling turquoise water and a village of cafes, restaurants and shops. We went swimming at Catseye Beach, which is one of the most popular beaches on the island. I’d love to come back to Hamilton Island for a few days of uninterrupted beach time!

Hamilton Island Whitsundays Queensland

The most famous beach in the Whitsundays is Whitehaven Beach , which is considered to be the best beach in Australia for its bright white sand. Located on the resort-free Whitsundays Island, Whitehaven is uninhabited and is only accessible only as a day trip. .

Unlike the other islands in the Whitsundays, Whitehaven has blindingly bright, white sand. Unusual tidal patterns over millions of years have made waves crash onto the beach, crushing white silica rock onto the island. The result is the softest, whitest sand you’ll find! We didn’t have to do the hot potato dance across the beach for a change because silica sand stays cool, even in the blazing Queensland sunshine.

When we reached the shore, we walked far enough away from the rest of the tour group so that we had a big chunk of beach all to ourselves. All that there was left to do for the next two hours was sit back and relax!

I didn’t realise this when booking, but the half-day trip to Whitehaven doesn’t include walking up to Hill Inlet for the famous view over the island. This was disappointing, and I definitely recommend booking a tour that includes this, as it’s one of the most spectacular views in the Whitsundays.

Whitehaven Beach Whitsundays Australia

Day 3: Airlie Beach to Townsville and Magnetic Island

We could have flown from Prosperine to Townsville , but at the time I was a bit nervous about flying on a very small plane – these days, I’d just take the flight! We took a Greyhound bus instead. It was my first time travelling with Greyhound and I was really impressed. Comfortable leather seats that recline, great air conditioning, a bathroom onboard, free WiFi and a USB charger for every seat.

We took an early Greyhound Bus from Airlie Beach to Townsville. The trip took five hours including a lunch break at a service station in the middle of nowhere. There was basic food for purchase but I’m glad I brought my own lunch.

We were only in Townsville for one night. It broke up the journey between Airlie Beach and Cairns but I’m glad we went because it is a pretty waterfront town in its own right.

We arrived later in the evening than I expected, so we didn’t have time to visit the Reef HQ Aquarium before catching the ferry to Magnetic Island . I’ve visited Townsville since this trip, and found so many beautiful things to do there when you have a bit more time!

9 Of The Best Things to Do in Townsville

Magnetic Island Townsville Queensland

Magnetic Island is a stunning tropical island just off the coast of Townsville. Visiting “Maggie” as locals call it is one of the best things to do in Townsville. The ferry from Townsville to Magnetic Island only takes 20 minutes, so it’s an easy addition.

There is an island bus which departs from the ferry terminal at Magnetic Island, so we hopped straight on and went to Horseshoe Bay. There are plenty of beaches on Magnetic Island, but Horseshoe Bay was easy to get to by bus and it was lovely and quiet when we got there. We chilled out on the beach for a couple of  hours, watched a magnificent sunset and had fish and chips for dinner by the water.

We stayed at Yongala Historic Lodge , Townsville. The room was simple but huge and we had our own private bathroom. We were on the third floor and there was was no elevator.

Day 4: Townsville to Cairns

We travelled with Greyhound from Townsville to Cairns , for  another five-hour drive. We had a much nicer lunch stop, in the pretty seaside town of Cardwell. This drive is part of one of Australia’s most scenic driving routes, The Great Tropical Drive, so the scenery was lovely for most of the trip.

Cafe in Cardwell Queesland

We were pretty tired by the time we got to Cairns, so we spent the afternoon wandering around the shops, finding the Cairns Night Markets and checking out the beautiful Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, which is a popular spot to cool down.

We were pretty tired by the time we got to Cairns, so we spent the afternoon wandering around the shops, finding the Cairns Night Markets and checking out the manmade lagoon.

Lagoon Cairns Queensland

We stayed at Queens Court on Sheridan St. We got a great deal but it was around a fifteen-minute walk into town. In the thick tropical humidity, I would have really appreciated staying even five minutes closer to the action.

Day 5: Day Trip from Cairns to Kuranda

Kuranda is a rainforest village on a mountain just outside Cairns. The journeys to and from Kuranda are a big part of the attraction. We went up on the award-winning Kuranda Skyrai l and took the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway back down the mountain at the end of the day.

Kuranda Skyrail

My heart was racing the entire time on the Skyrail, but even my fear of heights couldn’t ruin it for me. The views are an absolute knockout and I’ve never felt smaller than when I was floating above the endless sea of the ancient rainforest canopy.

Kuranda Skyrail View

We visited the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary , which is the biggest butterfly sanctuary in the world . A few butterflies landed on us, but we missed getting a photo of the elusive blue Ulysses butterfly landing on me – it waited until we had packed up our cameras and were leaving!

Kuranda Butterfly Sanctuary Queensland

After the butterfly sanctuary, we took a tour of the rainforest at the Rainforestation Nature Park . The 45-minute tour is hosted on a restored WWII Aquaduck, by a guide had lived and worked in the rainforest for decades. It was fascinating to hear his stories from the beautiful but potentially lethal rainforest as he introduced us to the tropical plants and wildlife.

Our return journey was on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, a historic train. The Scenic Railway return trip gave us beautiful views over the range as we descended the mountain. The journey itself is one of the world’s most scenic railway trips and the train is an engineering marvel, completed in the late 19th century.

Unfortunately, everyone was distracted from the views by how sticky and sweaty it was inside the train – just a part of travelling in the tropics.

When we got back to our hotel, I walked straight into the pool in my clothes – I could not wait another second to cool down!

The best way to see the Great Barrier Reef is to visit the Outer Reef Station on a day trip. In hindsight, I’m not sure why we didn’t book that, but I’m happy we visited beautiful Green Island.

Green Island is a coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef, covered in rainforest and fringed by white sandy beaches and brilliant blue water. This means that you can technically snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, right off the beach!

However, because the water around the island is very shallow, the coral has been bleached by the sun and there isn’t a great deal to see. This was my first time snorkelling, and now that I’ve since snorkelled in the vibrant reefs of Vanuatu and Fiji, I’m very keen to return to the Great Barrier Reef and go snorkelling on the outer reef.

There is a resort on Green Island, so you can use the resort pool, cafe and kiosks, but the sublime beaches feel a world away from modern life.

Day 7: Day Trip to Cape Tribulation, Port Douglas & The Daintree

Our final full day was full of pristine natural landscapes. We took a full day tour with Daintree Discovery Tours which included the Daintree Rainforest, Port Douglas, a Daintree River Cruise & Cape Tribulation.

Our first stop was the  Mossman Gorge Centre in the Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree is the oldest living rainforest in the world – 80 million years older than the Amazon!

We had morning tea at the centre before going on a walk through the rainforest. Our guide, Jean, took us to the  only  body of water in Tropical North Queensland that he’d let us swim in.

The water is too cold for crocodiles – and for most of our tour group – but I couldn’t resist! It was such a sticky, humid day that I could not just sit on the gravelly riverbanks and look at the refreshing, clear water.

Swimming at beaches and in rivers is not advised in Tropical North Queensland because you won’t see a crocodile until it is too late. I was glad that we found an exception to the rule, but I can’t stress enough not to choose your swimming spots without a guide.

Mossman Gorge Daintree Rainforest

After walking through the rainforest, we hopped back in the van and drove to Port Douglas, which is one of the loveliest small towns in the region. We drove to the top of a hill in Port Douglas to get the perfect view of Four Mile Beach before stopping in by the famous St Mary’s By The Sea Chapel for some more photos.

Four Mile Beach Lookout Port Douglas Queensland

We ate a very tropical lunch at Daintree Teahouse . I had barramundi, one of Queensland’s most popular fish, and tried all of the exotic tropical fruits that were artfully arranged on our plates. Some were delicious and others were a bit unusual but they were all interesting!

After lunch, we went on a crocodile cruise of the Daintree River, which was fascinating! Our guide, a local tracker, reckons that one of the stretches of water we went through was one of the most dangerous in the world – it’s infested with bull sharks  and  crocodiles.

Daintree River Crocodile Cruise Queensland

In the afternoon, we visited Cape Tribulation . It’s a pretty spectacular sight because it is the only place in the world where two World Heritage Listed Sites collide, where the Great Barrier Reef meets the Daintree.

We went on a longer walk through the rainforest and stopped at a few lookouts for some great photo opportunities.

Cape Tribulation Lookout Queensland

We had a slow morning before our flight home from Cairns. Fresh juices & dangling our feet in the Cairns Lagoon was a nice way to spend the morning before leaving the tropics.

We travelled through three regions of northern Queensland. This trip took us through The Whitsundays, Townsville and Cairns Great Barrier Reef regions. The tropics are beautiful, humid and have a hell of a wet season. We travelled in mid-November, pre-school holidays and pre-wet season.

When to visit Cairns & Whitsundays

The best time of year to visit is Dry Season, when you’ll enjoy milder, warm weather and clear days. Dry Season runs from May to October. This is the most popular time to visit, especially around the Easter long weekend and school holidays. Daytime temps are 26-28 °C and at night it’s 16-17 °C. Humidity is low and there’s lots of great weather, with little chance of rain.

Wet season is November to April, with an average temperate of 31 °C that feels more like 35 °C thanks to the 75% humidity. We went in mid November and had perfect weather every day, but if you travel in January or February the chances of tropical thunderstorms, lots of rainy days and potentially cyclones and floods is much higher. The plus side is, there are less tourists!

Expect high humidity, high temperatures and lots of rain, which can bring gushing waterfalls and lush, vibrant greenery, but also can bring wild storms and even cyclones (hurricanes) near the end of the season.

North Queensland’s waters are home to two kinds of poisonous jellyfish, Box Jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish, which have extremely potent venom that is fatal to humans. They are are especially prevalent during “Stinger season” from November – March. You can hire stinger suits on most islands or with most tours.

You’re unlikely to encounter them in the deep waters of the Great Barrier Reef, but most tour operators will have stinger suits available for hire anyway.

Every destination on this trip is in crocodile territory. As a result, you should not swim in creeks, lakes or rivers in North Queensland, even if you can’t see any signs of a crocodile.

We made one exception on this tour, under the direct guidance of a tour guide, but I would definitely not chance it on my own, without expert guidance.

Crocodiles are the ultimate predator, and their scales create countercurrents underwater, which means a five-metre croc can be in knee deep water right beside you and you won’t see the water’s surface move. Be smart.

Saltwater crocodiles can also live in the ocean. Even though this is rare, you should not swim at  unpatrolled beaches. When we visited, the beach at Cape Tribulation was closed because of a crocodile sighting.  This doesn’t apply to the Great Barrier Reef, so you can swim on the reef from Green Island or on a tour to the Outer Reef Station.

This trip was about seeing some of Australia’s best beaches and most beautiful islands, experiencing the great tropical outdoors and of course, the reef. Because we only had a week, for work-related and budget-related reasons, the trip had a relatively fast pace and it was a relief to settle in Cairns for four nights at the end.

However, because most of the day’s activities involved swimming and beaches, once we plonked ourselves on a beach we had a lot of downtime. If you can, I’d recommend adding a few days and taking it slower. I’d stay an extra night in Townsville and on one of the Whitsundays islands. Hamilton, Daydream, Green Island or Magnetic would be perfect.

Amazing! I’m going to Australia for the first time January 3rd and plan on staying for one year on the work and holiday visa. I’ll be living in Gold Coast and absolutely LOVE this itinerary, you got to do so much in just one week! I see you travel a lot through Oz, I’ll be using your blog to help plan my trip, thanks!!

Awesome how exciting! I hope this all helps 😊 I have done a few other little trips that I haven’t uploaded here yet too, so if you have any questions at all about living or travelling in Australia please get in touch! 🙂 Gold Coast is great!

Heaven!!! I want to dive there so bad 😀 Its a paradise, lucky you to have it as your doorstep 😀 Amazing! Have a great day!

Back in September not Sunday oops!

Great post! We went to Airlie Beach/Whitsundays for a weekend back in Sunday and fell in love with Whithaven and the Great Barrier Reef. Now I am adding Green Island to my list!

You definitely should! It’s hard to believe it is real! 🙂

Wow, you did so much in that time! It’s such a beautiful area though, isn’t it. Completely agree with you about the Kuranda markets, I was expecting a lot more considering the amount of advertising in Cairns, but the views nearby do make up for it!

Whitsundays Day Tour – The Best Whitsunday Islands Tours From Airlie Beach

Posted on Last updated: December 9, 2020

Found in the very heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Eastern Australia, lies a group of 74 tropical paradisal isles that make up the Whitsundays Islands.

The islands boast sweeping expanses of lush rainforests, glistening beaches, and jewel-coloured waters sheltering the colourful, life-filled reefs.

The Whitsundays are a ‘must-see’ on everyone’s Australia bucket list . The Whitsundays Islands is where the delights of the Great Barrier Reef and multifarious lifestyles, from resorts and hotels, all meet.

When I first saw photos of the Whitsundays I knew I had to add them to my ultimate travel bucket list . Most travellers choose to visit the Whitsundays on a day trip from mainland Australia.

If you’re among them, you’ve come to the right place!

In this guide I’ve outlined everything you need to know about doing a day tour to the Whitsundays, including departure points, prices, what to expect, and even alternative tours.

So what are you waiting for? The crystal clear waters of the Whitsundays are waiting, let’s dive in!

About the Whitsundays

Whitsundays forms part of the Cumberland Group of islands – the largest offshore chain of islands along the Australian coastline in the Coral Sea.

The majority of these isles are uninhabited (only eight are inhabited) and form part of the national parks . Several of the islands offer resort accommodation.

Airlie Beach is the main town on the mainland that is used as an entry point to the islands. Other big cities closeby include Cairns, 630km north, and Townsville, around 900km north of Brisbane.

The region provides a warm subtropical climate, with average temperatures around 27.4°C.

It has a well-defined dry season during winter (June – August), with average temperatures reaching 24°C, making it the perfect beachside holiday destination year-round.

The Whitsundays Islands are home to the world-renowned Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach ( rated the second-best beach in the world ). The perfect place to relax on the pristine beaches or stroll through the lush rainforests.

How to get to the Whitsundays from Airlie Beach

The Whitsundays Islands aren’t connected to the mainland. So unless you fly to Hamilton Island, you’ll need to take a ferry regardless of which mode of transportation you take along the mainland.

The easiest way to get to the Whitsunday Islands is by plane . The largest inhabited island, Hamilton Island, is serviced by its own airport, The Great Barrier Reef Airport.

It has direct flights from Melbourne, Cairns , Sydney and Brisbane. Another airport servicing the Whitsundays is Whitsunday Coast Airport, at Proserpine, 20km from Airlie Beach.

There are also two other light plane airports, Whitsunday Airport at the Shute harbour just 5km from Airlie Beach and an airport on Lindeman Island.

Lindeman Island has domestic and international connections via Sydney , Cairns, and Brisbane airports.

The majority of ferries travel between Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, though some also run from Shute Harbour, 10km east. The crossing takes around an hour.

Keep in mind, these are passenger-only ferries, so if you are driving by car , you’ll need to leave it at the ‘long-stay’ parking lot. However, many travellers choose to stay in Airlie Beach and take a Whitsundays day trip.

Most people drive to Airlie Beach as part of a longer Australia East Coast road trip . Whether you go from Cairns to Brisbane or viceversa, you’re guaranteed an epic Aussie road trip !

With an organised tour

If you prefer to have everything organised, you can also visit the Whitsunday Islands with an organised tour.

These usually set off from Airlie Beach, take you to explore the islands and then return either the same day or the following day, depending on what tour you choose.

These are great if you’re travelling on a tight schedule, or don’t want to have to organise an overnight stay at the resorts of Hamilton Island.

Our experience doing an Airlie Beach Tours to Whitsundays

We only did a day trip to the Whitsundays since we had a tight itinerary, and didn’t have time to spend longer at the islands.

If you’re up for an adventure, embark on a thrilling Whitsundays ocean rafting tour from Airlie Beach.

The duration of the tour is around 6.5 hours to a full day. You have two options to choose from with this trip – the North or the South Whitehaven option.

We opted for the Airlie Beach day trip to the North Whitehaven side and visited two different snorkelling stops. First on Hook Island and then to Whitehaven Beach.

It’s the perfect option for anyone looking to do a lot of snorkelling. It’s an amazing tour, but you won’t be spending much time on the actual islands with this choice.

We enjoyed lunch at the north end of Whitehaven beach, and then took a guided walk through the National Park and the Hill Inlet lookout point.

Snorkelling in the Whitsunday Islands with a Maori Wrasse

Snorkelling in the Whitsunday Islands with a Maori Wrasse

There you’ll see breathtaking views of blue and white strips, where the turquoise waters, reefs and sands meet. This was a really phenomenal day trip, and I wish we had stayed longer and explored a bit more of the islands.

The second option is the South Whitehaven tour and is ideal if you’re looking to do more relaxing on the beach.

You’ll explore one snorkel destination at Border or Dumbell Islands, and visit both the northern and southern ends of the pristine Whitehaven Beach.

You’ll get to relax on the world-renowned white silica sands or frolic in the waters for around 2-hours. Doing a day trip on a speed boat is ideal since the travel time is usually reduced.

Big sailing boats or catamarans are comfier to cruise on, but will take much longer to reach the islands. We also had a bit of an adventurous captain who did some speed tricks out at sea, which were pretty exhilarating!

The islands were so stunning that I wish we had been able to spend longer there. However as far as day trips go, the one we did was pretty awesome.

What to Bring on Your Whitsundays Island Day Tour

Although we all know how to pack for exciting tours, here are some of the general trip essentials and must-haves for a Whitsundays day tour.

Sunscreen – is your absolute trusty steed if you’re travelling in Australia. You’ll want to get a lotion that will protect you from the sun and to also be reef friendly.

Sun hat – it’s always good to have a sun hat when spending a day at the beach. The Australian sun can be really harsh, so having some shade to protect your face is essential.

Flip flops – you’ll want a pair of light shoes/flops to easily pack into your bag for exploring the shores.

Light waterproof jacket – is an essential item I like to take along with me, wherever I go. Although Whitsundays provides a subtropical climate, you may find it getting chilly if it rains or in the late afternoons. Taking a light waterproof jacket doesn’t need much space, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Reusable water bottle – not only provides you with water, but you also help conserve the environment when on tours. Most tour operators provide water and snacks, but it is always great to keep your own reusable water bottle at hand.

Fast-drying towel – is perfect for all purposes – camping, travel, beach, backpacking, swimming. It’s lightweight, absorbent and dries quickly. It’s certainly a popular travel accessory and one of my ‘must-have’ items.

Is doing a Whitsunday day Tour worth it?

To put it shortly, absolutely! With a subtropical climate and stunning tropical islands, you’ll certainly want to take a visit and see the paradise for yourself.

And if you take a ferry, it’s a short 1h 5m to get there, which is not bad at all.

You can explore these idyllic islands by snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing and swimming from the many beaches or the tour boat.

The day tour we took in Whitsundays is ideal if you want to do more snorkelling. It’s a lovely day trip, but you’ll spend a lot of time at sea and not actually on the islands.

More Whitsundays Tours Options

The Whitsundays day tour is a spectacular excursion, but for the next time, I will certainly opt for the overnight option to explore the surrounding areas more.

If you have more time, I’d suggest doing an overnight tour around the Whitsunday Islands. You’ll get the most out of your trip sailing, snorkelling, hiking and kayaking in these magical gem clear waters.

Not only that, but you’ll also get to embark on an eco-friendly exploration of hidden bays hugging around the reefs.

You’ll also get to visit the famous Whitehaven Beach, the Hill Inlet, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and other Whitsundays Islands.

Book your overnight sailing, snorkelling and kayaking tour here!

Relaxing at Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsunday Islands - a must-see on any Whitsunday Islands day trip

Chilling at the beach

Another excellent option is the 2-day combo tour to the outer Great Barrier Reef and some of the best locations in the Whitsundays.

Your first day is a 10-hour trip to explore the outer Great Barrier Reef on a cruise and pontoon, passing by Whitsunday islands. There you’re able to snorkel and enjoy a buffet lunch in paradise.

On your second day, you’ll embark on a 10-hour Catamaran Sailing tour to Whitehaven, the Hill Inlet and enjoy snorkelling in the crystal clear waters.

Jump onboard and prepare for a peaceful holiday surrounded by beauty. Head over to the islands in time for sunset over the water as you enjoy a glass of your favourite wine and meet the others whom you’ll be spending time with. Have your dinner served under the stars before tucking in for the night in your cabin.

Wake up in the morning to the stunning island scenery surrounding the boat and enjoy a leisurely breakfast on board. Sail down to tongue bay to make your way up to Hill Inlet Lookout and take in the stunning vista of the world-famous Whitehaven Beach. Spend some time exploring the beach itself before coming back on board for lunch on the go. Watching the beautiful scenery change as you sail north.

Jump into the delightful water for a swim and snorkel over the beautiful coral reefs teeming with bright colourful fish. If you’re lucky, spot a turtle or meet George the Maori-Wrasse! If there’s time, possibly go for another beach visit or snorkel before sharing an antipasto platter while you watch the sunset.

Dinner under the stars once again as you wind down for the evening. In the morning enjoy another stunning vista with breakfast on the deck. Maybe jump in for a cheeky swim before setting sail for the mainland.

For our three-day and three-night trip, you will have a whole extra day to mosey on through the secluded bays and coves around the Whitsunday Islands. Take everything a little slower and come back with more knowledge of the islands than some of the locals,

Please pack in a small soft sided bag. No hard/suitcases or large backpacks. We do not have luggage storage. Cabins on our Whitsundays sailing boats are pretty compact- so take as little as you possibly can on board. You can store luggage at your hotel or hostel in Airlie Beach. Check in by 7.00pm the day prior day of departure at Shop 1, 4 Airlie Esplanade, Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia. Tour departs the Coral Sea Marina Resort at 3pm.

We provide a mask, snorkel and stinger suit for every person on the trip included in the price. We do not provide fins. We do provide life jackets, and other flotation devices on request if needed. All our tours are eco-certified, and for us to keep in line with the regulations set out by this certification, we do everything we can to limit the amount of damage to the coral. We found, through years of experience, that giving people fins drastically increased the damage occurring to the coral. A stinger suit is a thin wetsuit appropriate for the warmer water here in the Whitsundays. They are designed to help protect you against stingers and from the sun while you snorkel.

All meals and snacks are included for the duration of your trip. Our crew freshly prepares each meal for you to enjoy using locally sourced, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Usually served buffet style; you can choose to eat anywhere onboard. Meals are a great communal time to get to know your fellow travellers.

A typical menu includes continental-style breakfasts, a filling lunch made up of build-your-own rolls, and two different salads plus accompaniments. Two delicious and hearty dinners, usually home-cooked style meals with salads and side dishes.

There will be snacks and afternoon nibbles, and tea and coffee available throughout the trip.
