Version 8 is a step back

Why mess with what works... I used 1Password 7 for a long time and loved it. Version 8 was released and broke so many things, it's a case study in frustrating your users by not leaving good enough alone. Since the version 8 upgrade the Safari extension is constantly asking me to enter my password (version 7 was happy with my touch ID). I get random errors I have never seen before, like "Unable to save" when trying to save a new login, clicking the "Use suggested password" item but it is unresponsive and nothing happens... They also removed a feature I LOVED and used daily: holding alt/option while looking at an item revealed the password - gone in version 8. I wish I could go back to version 7, and I am not the type of person who wants thing to stay the same, I love changes and improvements but from where I stand, I gained nothing from version 8 but lost reliability and functionality I used to love about 1PW. I am only not looking to switch because their successful vendor lock-in. I am too deep into the 1PW ecosystem (installed everywhere) and leaving it behind would cause even more pain than this miserable downgrade they call "version 8".

Terribly unreliable on Safari

The Chrome version of 1Password works fairly well, but I have daily issues with 1Password in Safari. This usually manifests itself as a disconnection from the desktop app, where you try to fill a user/password, 1Password asks you to unlock, and then the Safari extension hangs. Sometimes it will say that it needs to reload to reconnect. At this point it does seem like it reconnects to the 1Password desktop app, but the dropdown in user/password fields won't show without restarting Safari. But there are other annoying persistent bugs as well. Any kind of form autocomplete will battle it out with 1Password. So if the extension thinks that it should try to populate an address field that wants to autocomplete your address (i.e. you start typing your address and it uses Google to try to autocomplete for you), then the 1Password drop-downs will compete for this spot. That's annoying. The most annoying one, though, is competition with Safari's built-in SMS/email OTP autocomplete or just generic email fields. I want to retain the option in Safari to generate a unique email address for a site, so I need that function enabled, but 1Password steps on the Safari drop-downs every time. 1Password team, please, fix this extension. I love 1Password. When I spun up a company, I chose 1Password for our org of 30 people. You can do better.
Thanks for your detailed feedback. We're sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with 1Password in Safari. Rest assured, our team is actively working on resolving these bugs. In the meantime, we'd love to gather more information about your specific devices and configurations. If you could reach out to us at [email protected], our team will reach out to help.

I like the new version

I have been using 1Password since 2014 and just upgraded from version 6, so the new version, though somewhat different, has been a much smoother experience for me. I resisted upgrading, especially after reading some of the negativity here, but I liked that I didn't have to dump my old version 6 app and data to upgrade, so I felt confident I could go back if something went wrong or I was simply unhappy with the new version. To my surprise, the migration process from 6 was easy (though I did have to download version 7 first, but still not a big deal). I realized that Dropbox was having a hard time connecting to my devices regularly, so consequently, I often was missing new passwords if they hadn't been synced. That no longer is the case since everything just syncs flawlessly! Plus, I love that y'all are taking the time to respond to all of the comments. I'm sure the complications will get worked out, but if you aren't coming from version 7 directly, 8 is a no-brainer!
Thanks for this great 5-star review. It's great to hear the upgrade process was easy for you, and that you're enjoying 1Password 8 - we appreciate you letting us know!

1Password for Safari is here for iOS 15, and it's life-changing

1password in the browser.

Everything you love about 1Password is now available in Safari on iPhone and iPad. And it’s as incredible as you could possibly imagine.

Ever since we first released 1Password X for desktop web browsers, we’ve dreamed of bringing its power to iPhone and iPad. With today’s release of iOS 15, we’ve done just that! 😍

You have immediate access to all of 1Password directly in Safari. Fill with a tap, search all items, generate Smart Passwords, or even view your favorite shortbread recipe. Having your entire digital life available directly within Safari is life-changing.

And that’s just the beginning. We brought in-page suggestions over from the desktop as well.

In-page suggestions allow you to access your items exactly where you need them. For sites that have complicated sign-in forms, we use our on-device machine learning to detect what’s happening and automatically fill the password for you.

And if you use two-factor authentication, we automatically fill the codes, so you don’t need to copy them to your clipboard.

Using the web on iPhone has never been faster or more secure. 🔒

iPad: Mighty and Magical

iPad has a wonderful desktop-class browsing experience. Now it has the entire desktop 1Password experience as well.

If you’ve used 1Password in a desktop web browser, the iPad experience will be immediately familiar to you. Everything is where you expect it, and it works great with your finger, Apple Pencil, or your Magic Keyboard.

1Password turbocharges any iPad, even that cute mini one! 💜

And so much more…

With today’s iOS and iPadOS releases, we brought a ton of features to these platforms we’ve only ever dreamed about.

  • Get contextual in-page filling suggestions as you browse the web
  • Fill logins, credit cards, identities, emails, and addresses
  • Automatically fill credentials across multiple pages
  • Autofill two-factor authentication codes
  • Scan QR codes for easy setup of two-factor authentication
  • Use suggested Smart Passwords that meet the requirements of any page
  • Save logins and credit cards to 1Password straight from the page

1Password works everywhere

How-To Geek

1password for iphone and ipad just got a lot more powerful.

Safari on iPhone and iPad has a new feature that makes it more like a desktop browser.

Quick Links

1password's mobile safari extension, future mobile safari extensions.

There's plenty of good stuff in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. One of the most exciting aspects of the OS that isn't getting enough hype is mobile Safari extensions . 1Password has kicked things off by releasing a desktop-like extension for its password manager that users will love.

The 1Password Safari extension looks very similar to the desktop version, as shown off by 1Password . While Apple made it so you can autofill passwords from an app like 1Password a while ago, having it integrated directly into the browser creates a more desktop-like experience that'll make dealing with your passwords more pleasant.

In the app's description, 1Password describes its extension as "our desktop-class Safari extension for 1Password members using the latest version of iOS and iPadOS!"

Based on early impressions, it really looks like a desktop experience. It makes us rather excited for what other app developers could do with desktop-like extensions on iPhone and iPad.

Some of the features offered by the extension include contextual inline filling suggestions, the ability to fill in logins, credit cards, identities, email addresses, and addresses, auto-filling  two-factor authentication codes, QR code scanning for easy setup of two-factor authentication, and plenty of other stuff.

The release of 1Password for mobile Safari is just the first step in what we hope will be a long line of Safari extensions. There's already been a Honey extension release, and we expect plenty of other popular desktop extensions to make their way to mobile Safari.

It feels like this could be the start of mobile browsers genuinely competing with their desktop counterparts in ways they never could before. Just imagine what your mobile browser could doo with full extensions and how much better it would be.

1Password 8 and Safari Extension are not talking to each other.

Has the time come to delete 1Password and its files and start over. Safari Extension and 1Pw8 are not synching?

Greetings mlangfur,

1Password is a 3rd party app, so support offered here in the Apple Support Communities may be limited. However, there are a few steps we can recommend that you follow to help with the sync issues you're experiencing.

First, restart your device. Often this simple step will refresh the apps and software on the device to solve numerous problems you may encounter. Steps for how to restart will vary by device.

  • Restart your iPhone - Apple Support
  • Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support
  • Restart your iPad - Apple Support

If this does not help to correct the issue, you'll want to make sure the software on your device is up-to-date. Here are some steps that can help you out:

  • Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
  • Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

If the issue remains, open the App Store on your device, and check to make sure that the all your apps are up-to-date. If not, update the apps. If they are already up-to-date, you can follow these steps to reach out to the app developer for 1Password: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support .

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!

So, TIL about this (after trying to figure out why mobile Safari wasn't letting me authenticate 1P via biometrics): https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-7-9-9-released-after-ios-16-arrival.2358589/ Any chance this has been figured out? I'm not seeing any solution. Maybe I just wanted to complain for a minute.

Huh, same on 1Password 8.9.6. And I thought it was just a very annoying bug, because I've had the same issue in the past (which usually resolved itself after a day or two) and because their Safari extension on macOS sometimes breaks for me since 1P 8 and above

Yup. 1Password has really screwed up their latest release. Between this and the UI regressions it's pretty poor. Their support, while normally excellent, has been taking a turn for the worse lately too. Several days go by without a reply.

Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius

Working for me on 8.9.6, iOS 16.0.3. FWIW I have found 1Password 8 to be more stable and reliable than 1Password 7, although the interface is a regression and on the desktop it uses more RAM.

I'm also getting 1password fatigue, and that's due to the browser extension popping up even when not needed...it's just good at getting in the way these days. Also, I have iOS/MacOS, google, microsoft, AND 1password trying to remember my passwords these days. I'm beginning to suffer more and more when trying to access infrequently accessed things where I may not even be sure I have an account (something 1password used to be excellent for). I'm not sure what the solution is, but at some point the solution may be to stop subscribing to 1password. I have not tried v8 yet, usually just way to busy/in a hurry when 1password tries to nudge me to upgrade from 7.

I haven't gotten around to doing it yet, but I'm tempted to turn their browser extension off on iOS-- Face ID was clunky in the old extension (because the Webauthn UX is clunky in Safari; nothing that was 1Password's fault), but it wasn't bad enough to merit ditching the feature entirely. I don't see why it's gone now, especially since the browser extension seems to be more-or-less the same as the one they were shipping with 7 otherwise. Thankfully, their OS-wide password integration still supports Face ID and works well. And you need to turn that on anyways if you want to be able to use 1P to sign into native apps.

Huh. 1Password 8 UI is weird but I’ve found it to work better/more reliably otherwise. Including with FaceID.

I didn't even realize you all were talking about the iOS browser extension because I"ve never used it. I use 1P8 via systemwide integration only on iOS, and it works pretty well, all things considered.

Perhaps off-topic, but has anyone else been frustrated by the interaction/interference of the Apple Hide My Email popup with the 1Password popup? On some sites where I have several logins, I can't access the first 1P selection because the Apple HME "suggestion" is on top of it. I'm still using 1P 7, does 1P 8 deal with this at all? This is all on macOS.

PSA: Face ID and Touch ID are back in 1Password 8's iOS Safari extension as of today's update (8.9.7). Actually works a bit better than it did before, since it doesn't have the interstitial "tap to allow this extension to use Face ID" popup that 1P7 on iOS 15 had.

I can't get Touch ID to work for 1password in the safari extension. The 1password icon is there in the sharing menu, but when I tap on it the only option is to input my password. Touch ID works fine with the 1password app itself, so I assume I am missing something in the settings, but I can't figure it out. I have been messing with it for the last hour or so. (Running iOS 8 of course with iPhone 5s). Thanks.

AGKyle said: Oh boy, this should be fun I am sorry in advance if this doesn't work. I do not yet have a TouchID enabled device so I am not able to test things personally before relaying this information. What I've heard (from TouchID enabled coworkers) is that you need to goto 1Password -> Settings -> Advanced -> Use iOS Keychain and make sure that is enabled. Basically, what happens is that to unlock 1Password we need to store the master password in the iOS keychain. TouchID only provides us with a "Yes/No" style response, so, we store the master password in the iOS keychain with a few parameters. 1. It can only be read by 1Password, not other applications 2. It will never leave your iOS device 3. It requires the unlock code for the device, OR TouchID to validate and gain access So, it's pretty secure, so long as you use a strong passcode for your iOS device (I suggest using more than the 4 digit pin unlock). Once this is enabled, we store the master password in the keychain. Then when 1Password asks you to unlock it'll throw up the TouchID screen. You confirm with your finger(s) that you are who you say you are, TouchID tells us you are the person you claim to be, we use that to get the master password, and unlock the application (or extension). Let me know how it turns out! Click to expand...

Details here: https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac/4/en/topic/importing-data Also, a user contribution may do an even better job of importing: https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/import Both should get you up and running with the data in the Mac app, of which you can get free for 30 days ( http://www.agilebits.com/downloads ) Then you can sync this data, either via Dropbox or Wifi (iCloud won't work unless you're on Yosemite and using the latest 1Password for Mac beta) along with iOS 8 and 1Password 5 for iOS. Maybe something got corrupted during the update or I had a default setting off causing it not to work right. Either way, I am happy. It is one of my favorite apps, especially now with Touch ID. I noticed one other problem which needs an immediate fix...Touch ID "timeouts" meaning that although Touch ID is enabled in stops working after a few minutes and no longer allow log-ins via touch but only via password...after / once the password is entered then the Touch ID starts working again for a few minutes and then, the cylce continues.

JoelBC said: Appreciate the link as well as the explanation which I think I understand as it appears that there are two timers i) time between opening with the master password and ii) time before asking for a finger print again...to maximize the amount of time that one can use touch ID the first needs to be set to 30 days (longest available) while the second can be set to a shorter interval for security (say, two days)... AGKyle said: This is an iOS issue. Almost everyone on our team has filed a bug report with Apple, hopefully it gets fixed soon... It also existed in the betas. There's no super simple way to do this. TouchID does not give us anything other than a "Yes/No" type of response. It's hard to replace the master password with Yes/No and still be secure What we do is store the Master Password in the iOS keychain with a few important flags: 1) It can only be accessed by 1Password 2) It never leaves the device (no iCloud Keychain sync) 3) It requires the device's passcode (we suggest a longer non-digit only passcode) or TouchID to gain access to the item in the iOS keychain We can then use that to unlock the application. Given that though, we felt limiting the time it was made available before typing in the master password served a few great functions: 1) Basing it on time means that the user can use it for fast app switching purposes only if they wish, or have it on for a longer period of time 2) Basing it on time means they do have to type their master password in at some point, otherwise they may forget it. Nothing hurts worse than telling a person we cannot recover their master password because they forgot it. Happens often enough to give me nightmare's. We cannot reset a user's password so if it's forgotten it's forgotten and so is the data contained within. If we allowed resets that would mean there was a way for a malicious user to try to gain access. We made these choices to provide the best set of options for you, our users. They may not always be exactly what you want, but they're usually a pretty good middle ground between being secure and convenient. ---------- Agreed. It's just hard to explain in limited amounts of space I'm sure we'll reword it over time in an attempt to improve it. Sometimes you have to get feedback from users about what is confusing and seeing it in support before you know what is unclear or needs alteration. Click to expand...
