From Interstate 5 (Orange County, Los Angeles), take the State Route 78 East exit at Oceanside, proceed east to Interstate 15 South, exit at Via Rancho Parkway (Exit 27) and follow the signs to the Park. From Interstate 15 (Riverside), exit at Via Rancho Parkway (Exit 27) and follow the signs east to the Park.

From State Route 163 (downtown San Diego, Mission Valley) proceed to Interstate 15 North to the Via Rancho Parkway exit (Exit 27). Go east and follow signs to the Park. From Interstate 5 or 805 (Mexico), proceed to State Route 163, then to Interstate 15 North, and then exit at Via Rancho Parkway (Exit 27). Follow signs east.

From Interstate 8 (Imperial County, Arizona) take Interstate 15 North to the Via Rancho Parkway exit (Exit 27). Follow the signs east to the Park.

General parking (automobiles and motorcycles): $20 per vehicle. RV parking: starting at $38. Preferred parking: starting at $38. First come, first served; there are no in and out privileges.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomes all guests. We have several services to help guests with disabilities enjoy their visit. The Safari Park provides special parking, restrooms, and access to shows, tour buses, and exhibits for guests with disabilities. Please note there are steep grades in parts of the Safari Park. A complimentary ADA shuttle service operates inside the Safari Park for guests with mobility-related disabilities. Guests who use mobility assistive devices may also refer to the map for ADA pathways and elevators.

Welcome to Bandipur Tiger Reserve Park!

This National Park was formed by including most of the forest areas of the then Venugopala Wildlife Park established under Govt. Notification dated 19th February 1941 and the area was enlarged in 1985 extending over an area of 874.20 Sq.Km and named as Bandipur National Park.

This reserve was brought under Project Tiger in 1973. Subsequently some adjacent reserve forest areas were added to the reserve and extending to 880.02 Sq. Km. The present area under the control of Bandipur Tiger Reserve is 912.04 Sq. Km.

An area of 39.80 Sq. Km of KFDC plantation area was handed over to this division during 2007-08. During 2010-11 the Nugu Wildlife Sanctuary was handed over to Wildlife Division, Mysore.

To reduce the disturbance from tourism in the main sanctuary area, and to facilitate tourists to understand the importance of Gir and its wildlife, an interpretation zone has been created at Devalia. This comprises 412 ha of chain-link fenced area which is ‘Gir in a nutshell’, covering all habitat types and all major representatives of wildlife of Gir. The basic aim of creating this facility is to provide an opportunity to view lions and other animals in their natural habitat within a short period and reduce tourist pressure on the sanctuary. The area has a good quantity of prey base in the form of Spotted Deers, Blue Bulls, Wild Boars, Blackbucks, Sambars, and Chinkaras. Spotting a Lion in its savanna habitat is a treat to the eyes for a wildlife. A good variety of grassland, as well as forest avifauna, is also spotted in the area. 20-30 Indian Vultures are regular visitors here.

Advance booking starts 90 days before the safari date, so kindly book your gypsy as early as possible.
Devalia bus safari will be conducted in a closed bus.
Safari Price: Rs. 250 per person (Indian) / Rs. 4000 per person (Foreigner)
This cost does not include the guide charges i.e. Rs. 400
Camera Fee: Rs. 200 (Indians) & Rs. 1400 (Foreigners) has to be paid before the safari starts.
To ensure the safety of visitors, seating capacity in the vehicle is reduced to half.
Guest Details required for booking: Full name, age, gender, ID Proof (Passport/VoterID/Driving License/Aadhar Card) number of all the visitors. (Pan Card is not allowed)
Visitors need to compulsorily carry the same identity proof given at the time of booking, the forest officer will check before your safari. In case of any mismatch, your safari will not be conducted and no refunds will be given.
Visitors are requested to reach Sasan Gir Reception Center (Sinh Sadan) at least before 30 minutes of your scheduled safari time.
Devalia Bus Safari remains closed every Wednesday.

What We Do?

Sasan Gir National Park was a part of the princely state of Junagarh back in the 19th century and a hunting ground for the royal household and the British officers. However, the sudden drop in the lion population encouraged the Nawab of Junagarh to establish the sanctuary in 1965. Today, Gir Forest is the only place in Asia where Asiatic lions can roam freely. Ecotourism is a major attraction and a source of revenue to keep the place up and running.

Forest & Safari Booking

The landscape.

The Gir Lion Reserve, aka Sasan Gir, is part of a huge stretch of Kathiawr-Gir deciduous forest and home to the majestic Asiatic lions. The park, spreading over an area of 1413 square Kilometres is ideal for a weekend gateway, offering guests great accommodation options near the park. You can spend your days exploring the Gir jungle trail safaris, spotting lion cubs roaming about the area, and learn more about the amazing wildlife conservation work that is done by the officers here.

Water Resources

Other than the rich biodiversity and tourism, the Sasan Gir forest is also known for its elaborate water conservation systems. Gir is the meeting point of seven major perennial rivers- Hiran, Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Godavari, and Raval. There are four water reservoirs constructed on four of these rivers Hiran, Machhundri, Raval, and Shingoda. The Kamleshwar Dam, dubbed, ‘the lifeline of Gir’ is the biggest dam in the area. Plus, there are water points or small lakes constructed all over the landscape for animals to gather during the scorching summer months to quench their thirst.

Flora Of Gir Jungle

Gir National Park is a very dry teak forest. Here, teak occurs mixed with dry deciduous species. More than 507 plant species have been recorded comprising 132 tree species, 48 shrub species, 232 herb species, 64 climber species and 26 grass species. The Gir national park is part of the Kathiawar-Gir deciduous forest, replete with semi-evergreen trees and thorny shrubs, and rolling plains of grasslands. The area features mixed forest with teak trees, Zizyphas, dhak, Jamun, tendu, babool, banyan and acacia that can be used for fuelwood and other purposes.

Other than that, there are also plants like Dhavdo, timru, umro, simai, Simal, khakro, Kalam, Vad, Amla, Bamboo, Ber, and Saliacan here. The forest is shady with broad-leaved deciduous trees like casuarinas and Prosopsis that add on to the aesthetics of the place. Scientists and biologists are also conducting research in and around the area, discovering new species, harvesting methods, and actionable environmental conservation techniques.

Fauna Of Gir Forest

The endless stretch of deciduous forest in the Gir National Park is the only place in Asia where you can find Asiatic lions roaming around freely in all their glory. However, the dense forest is not just home to these majestic carnivores but a host of other species and insects that make the place vibrant and diverse.

Established in 1965, this wildlife sanctuary was earlier a hunting ground for royal families and British officers. Today the area is one of the most extensive wildlife conservation sites in the country. Back in 1913, there were but 20 lions in the forest, the 2015 consensus shows a vast improvement in the situation with the population rising to 523 lions. Here are some of the animals that you can come across on your trip to the Sasan Gir Forest:

Other than lions, you can also find herds of deer, leopards, hyenas, jackals, elephants, mongoose, and other mammals on land. There are two types of deer species found here- the popular Sambar and Chowsingha, the four-horned antelope. Striped Hyena, jackals, and India Fox are other common predators.

The Gir National Park is house of over 200 species of birds- ranging from common swallows to majestic peacocks. The national park also functions as a bird reserve, a title that was declared by the Bird Conservative Network. Bird watchers from across the world come over to the forest to spot species like the greenish yellow-footed pigeons, Griffon Eurasian vulture, hawk, eagle, Indian Pitta, Oriole to name a few.

As soon as you enter the forest, the chirruping of crickets greets you, piercing the stillness of the jungle. As you move on, you might come across other small creatures like worms, butterflies, bugs, grasshoppers among other things. There are over 2000 species of insects that were discovered by scientists in the past few decades. We would recommend that you carry a bug spray, carry jackets, and other medication with you to protect yourself from allergic reactions and skin inflammation.

Other than insects and birds, the Gir national reserve has a decent population of reptiles as well. There are roughly 37 new species of reptiles, ranging from frogs to snakes and scorpions and bees that researchers have discovered in the area. However, it is the marsh crocodile that steals the show, attracting tourists in large numbers. Snake lovers would be thrilled to discover species like the King Cobra, Russel’s viper, Krait, and saw-scaled vipers in the forest.

Gir has a tropical monsoon climate, with three distinct seasons – summer, monsoon and winter. Late November to early March is cool and dry, followed by a hot dry summer. Mid-June to September is the monsoon period. The bulk of the precipitation is during July and August.

Gir National Park Entry Fee and Timetable

A visit to Gir National Park, the most celebrated Wildlife sanctuary of the country is indeed a fulfillment of all the wildlife fantasies one could have. The forests of Gir offer a perfect natural habitat for the world famed Asiatic Lion species, the only one of its kind in India. This sanctuary was founded in the year 1965 and covers a sprawling area of 1412sqkms. Visitors to Gir pick the most unparalleled experience as they get to visualize those most unique Asiatic lions along with other rare wild animals and birds such as black buck, hyenas, wild foxes, brown fish, pygmy woodpeckers etc. The park falls in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. Gir Entry Fees

There are certain charges you need to pay if you wish to explore the Gir National Park. For Indian visitors, the entry fee is Rs 75 whereas for foreign visitors, it is Rs 100. The vehicle fee for safari is Rs 35, photography fee is Rs 100 and fee for 4 hours of guide service is Rs 50. If tickets to Gir and safari booking are done online, then one has to pay additional payment gateway charges. If one is putting up in famed luxurious resorts like Vanvaso resort, Asiatic Lion lodge, Club Mahindra resort, charges may go up to INR 5000 per jeep safari with 6 persons in a jeep.

Gir Timetable

The safari timings at Gir may be categorized into morning safari timing and evening safari timing. Morning safari timings again can be categorized into early morning safari timing and mid day safari timing. Early morning safari starts at 6am and continues till 9am while midday safari starts from 9.00am and continues up till 12.00 noon. It is best to avail the morning safari time as during that time the chances of spotting the wild animals remains pretty high. Evening safari starts from 3pm and continues till 6pm.

The park has a monsoon break and during that time the park is closed and no safari is allowed though the Devaliya Safari zone remains open year round. The monsoon break starts from mid June to mid October. Each Wednesday of each week the Devaliya safari park is closed and no safari is allowed.

Mudumalai Safari

Mudumalai van safari and jeep safari.

Safari is a major attraction at Mudumalai National Park. Mudumalai safari office is located at Thepakadu junction about 10km from Deep jungle home campus. The road that leads to the safari office runs through the jungle making the 10 km drive like a safari by itself. There is no advance safari booking option available at Mudumlai. They choose to operate on first come first serve basis. It is always advisable to reach the Mudumalai safari office at least 30 Mins before the safari start time to avoid any last moment disappointment.

1. Elephant Camp:

Located opposite to the mudumalai safari office, the elephant camp is worth visiting. Camp hosts elephants maintained by the forest department. These elephants help in controlling wild elephants that enter human habitation. They are called kumki elephants. They are looked after at the camp.
