Columbus, Ohio, Launches Distillery Tour

Craft Spirits Magazine

Experience Columbus has announced the launch of its new Columbus Distillery Trail , a carefully curated experience co-sponsored by Destination Grandview that welcomes locals and visitors alike to the city’s world-class spirits maker experiences. Columbus’ skilled artisans win international accolades and have led the national craft distilling movement for more than 10 years. In fact, Columbus distilleries are defining one of the most exciting spirits and cocktail scenes in the country, placing the city on the map as a must-visit destination for booze buffs.

Each stop on the trail offers tours and tastings, many with full bar service, while continuing to take great care to ensure guest and staff safety via social distancing, masking and sanitary protocols. This new trail joins Columbus’ existing curated guides to experiencing the best the city has to offer, including the  Short North Art  Trail (curated by the Short North Alliance) and  Columbus Coffee  Trail. Anyone 21 or over can download the Distillery Trail’s digital passport to get started  here . After making  any  purchase at four of the stops, visitors earn a custom Simple Times mixer (featuring a delicious Blackberry Lemonade flavor). After visiting all seven, they earn a “The Proof is in the Proof” Columbus Distillery Trail t-shirt. The Distillery Trail passport covers the following stops:

  • Upstart  Echo Spirits Distilling Co . launched in 2020 against all odds in Grandview, crafting high-end spirits made to be accessible. The distillery aims to echo a time when we got to know the folks making the things we buy, and a laid-back bar offers great cocktails and food deliveries from nearby restaurants.
  • One of the country’s fastest growing distillers,  Middle West Spirits  was named U.S. Distillery of the Year in the Berlin International Spirits Competition and nearly every one of its 15 spirits, including gin, whiskies, bourbons, vodkas and bourbon cream, have brought home double gold, gold and silver awards in key international spirits competitions.
  • Endeavor Brewing and Spirits  launched as a brewery in 2017 in Grandview and began releasing the results of its distilling operations in 2019. Endeavor’s liquor lineup includes craft brews, vodka, rum, dry gin, and a botanical gin. They also host rotating food trucks.
  • Watershed Distillery  started up in Grandview in 2010, then opened the state’s first restaurant connected to a distillery,  Watershed Kitchen & Bar , in 2017. Its gin and other spirits garner solid reviews, and include seasonal nocino made from spiced local black walnuts and apple brandy.
  • Quirky  451 Spirits  is tucked into an alley next to a neighborhood dive bar in Columbus’ hip residential neighborhood of Clintonville. Something of a mad scientists’ den for spirits, 451’s interesting riffs on rum, whiskey, mezcal and absinthe start with unusual mash bills and end with remarkable results, like Pizza Pie’Chuga, distiller Chad Kessler’s play on Pechuga mezcal infused with local favorite pizza Mikey’s Late Night Slice. While it sounds like a wholly crazy notion, it makes magic in a Bloody Mary.
  • Its bread and butter is distilling vodka and whiskey, but  Noble Cut Distillery  in Gahanna gets high marks for twisted takes on limoncello, the Italian citrus-and vodka-based aperitif or digestif. Distiller and co-owner Tony Guilfoy also makes his ‘cello in tart and tasty orange and grapefruit versions.
  • High Bank Distillery  in Grandview Heights has a buzzy full-service bar and restaurant which feature elevated, casual food offerings with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and a balance of both indulgent and healthy options. Its cocktail menu features both classic cocktails and in-house creations. High Bank’s Whiskey War Barrel Proof Blend recently received the Best of Class in American Blended Whiskey Award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

From Tiki-themed mini golf to a distillery, 3 projects opening in Butchertown this year

distillery tours ohio

Just to the east of downtown and near the quickly developing NuLu district, the Butchertown neighborhood is continuing to evolve from its industrial and manufacturing roots.

Stretching from the Ohio River to Main Street and from Interstate 65 to Mellwood Avenue and Beargrass Creek, Butchertown has long been known for the meatpacking industry that set up shop there in the 1800s.

A slew of new projects are in the works for the neighborhood, some slated to debut this year. Here are some developments, in alphabetical order, to watch in 2024.

Brough Brothers Distillery River Road location

1250 River Road, broughbrothers.com

More than a year in the planning stages, a new venture from Brough Brothers Distillery along River Road is aiming for an April opening.

The Louisville-based, Black-owned distillery plans to start construction in January on its second Louisville location, a distillery "very focused on the public" near Waterfront Park, said Victor Yarbrough, chief executive officer.

“It’s going to be something that people in the park … can come by and get a drink or enjoy some outdoor music as well as many types of events.”

With his brothers Chris and Bryson, Victor Yarbrough opened to the public the first Black-owned distillery in Louisville, Brough Brothers Distillery, in the summer of 2020 at 1460 Dixie Highway.

Unlike its Dixie Highway facility, which is largely production-focused, the River Road location will be geared toward the public.

Yarbrough is taking a warehouse building at 1250 River Road — owned by public agency Waterfront Development Corporation — and building out various rooms for both production and public-facing uses.

“We needed to expand, and this is a way to expand production capacity seven-fold,” he said, adding that “the full gamut of distilling” will be done on one-third of the new site.

Final details are still being worked out, but Yarbrough said the new location will have rentable rooms for events, retail space, an outdoor game yard, and a full bar open throughout the week. Distillery tours will be offered on-site, as well.

He anticipates opening before the Kentucky Derby , likely sometime in April.

“We feel very enthusiastic about the location,” he said, noting momentum in the immediate area with the 2023 opening of Pig Beach BBQ nearby in Waterfront Park. “Waterfront Development Corporation has been a great partner and we look forward to being able to grow that relationship."

Miniature golf at South Seas restaurant

1301 Story Ave., loutiki.com

A bar and restaurant along Story Avenue is set to expand into the full version its owner originally intended this year.

South Seas , a tiki- and Southern California-inspired bar and restaurant, opened in May 2022. Shawn Cantley, a primary owner of the business along with Richard Rigney, owner of Clarendon Flavors, said he was keen to snag the Butchertown property when it became available after the closure of Hog Father Pizza.

Though he first opened the business with its food and drink components, he always wanted the concept to include miniature golf.

Having more than 8,000 square feet of space, combined with its location further away from a density of NuLu and Butchertown businesses, Cantley knew he wanted to more fully activate his space to be a draw for customers.

“If there’s a soccer game, we’re rocking,” he said, referencing the nearby Lynn Family Stadium . “But if there isn’t a soccer game, you kind of need a pull to come to that part of Butchertown at night, and this will definitely be that.”

A nine-hole golf course contained within the existing two-story building is set to open in February.

“It’s essentially boozy mini golf,” Cantley said. “It’s a super bespoke custom nine-hole golf course that looks like it was made by artisans because it was.”

Weber Group in Sellersburg, Indiana, crafted and brought the course to life. Each hole is themed around a popular tiki drink on the menu, including the Zombie and Mai Tai. The course will reflect the restaurant’s overall mid-century modern Los Angeles aesthetic.

“Think more The Beverly Hilton circa 1960 rather than Disney’s 'Jungle Cruise',” he said.

The downstairs level of the business has been open while the upper level, home to seven of the nine holes, was remodeled last year. A large room on the first floor will hold the final two holes.

“I wanted it to be fun to play, and I wanted it to be challenging,” he said. “Every hole has a makable hole-in-one, but it’s a super challenging hole-in-one, and usually going for the hole-in-one is super risk-reward.”

Cantley is also planning a second phase that would expand the course with nine more holes. This addition would be an enclosable outdoor course in the South Seas parking lot.

Unnamed bar/restaurant concept on Butcher Block

111 N. Wenzel St.

A new business is slated to join an increasingly developed block along Main Street this summer.

Since 2015, Local developer Andy Blieden has transformed multiple buildings on the 100 block of North Wenzel Street and 1000 blocks of East Washington and East Main streets, referred to as Butcher Block. The latest property set to see a big change is 111 N. Wenzel St., which Blieden’s Butcher Block Properties LLC bought in late 2022 for $300,000, deed records show.

He successfully rezoned the 1,350-square-foot single-family home from residential to commercial use last year.

Blieden said a bar and restaurant is soon coming to the space from a new tenant, joining a block that includes Big Nita’s Cheesecakes , Cultured , and Pho Ba Luu , among others.

“The concept will be announced in the next couple of months,” he said, adding he anticipates a summer 2024 opening.

  • 7 Coolest Towns in Kentucky for a Summer Vacation in 2024

Every year is a great year to visit Kentucky , but 2024 is especially good timing. This year, Kentucky State Parks celebrates its 100th anniversary with a series of events that showcase the incredible (and very cool) beauty of the bluegrass state. It’s also the 25th anniversary of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a legendary route covering historic sites, country towns, inviting eateries, and — of course — award-winning distilleries. Even in a quiet year, Kentucky is one of America’s coolest states. The home of blues, BBQ, and Bluegrass is bound to have a little swagger. Whether riding horseback on rustic trails, sipping Kentucky moonshine, or watching steamboats drift down the Ohio River , this is a vacation you’ll remember long after you've unpacked your suitcase.

Augusta is a charming river town on the banks of the Ohio River. The town was first given its charter in 1797, making it one of the oldest in Kentucky. You can see echoes of Augusta’s long history almost everywhere you look in town, but sites of particular interest include the 1811 jail, Underground Railroad safehouses Payne House and White Hall, and Cemetery Hill, the site of the 1862 Battle of Augusta. Augusta is also home to one of the oldest ferry services on the Ohio River, operating since 1798. You can ride the Jenny Ann daily throughout the summer to catch the river’s cool breezes and gorgeous views. Augusta has plenty of Kentucky charm, but the town claims some Hollywood stardust, too. You can learn about its famous residents at the Rosemary Clooney Museum, the former home of the singer and movie star.

Mill Creek Lake, part of Daniel Boone National Forest in Slade, Kentucky. The lake leads into an underground cavern for exploration.

Mill Creek Lake, part of Daniel Boone National Forest in Slade, Kentucky.

Kentucky is home to over 2,000 natural arches — the most of any state east of the Mississippi River. See the most famous at the Natural Bridge State Park near the tiny town of Slade. The Natural Bridge is a jaw-dropping sandstone arch stretching more than 75 feet long and 65 feet high. Explore the arch from the sky courtesy of the Sky Lift which floats above the forest canopy to give incredible views of the ridge below. There’s another natural wonder near Slade that attracts outdoor adventurers to the town. The Red River Gorge is known for its world-class climbing, biking, and hiking. With zip lines, kayaking tours, and bird-watching, there’s something for everyone in the family at this hidden gem. You can even stay in a treehouse for the ultimate cool vacation. These aren’t your typical backwoods huts either. Choose from the Observatory treehouse, with sweeping views over the gorge and a hammock lounge, or the Tradewinds Treehouse, which boasts a slide to the ground and a hot tub.

Cave City, Kentucky, USA. Dinosaur World offers life-size dinosaur replicas and interactive activities for kids.

As you can probably guess from the name, the action in Cave City happens underground. This small town is the gateway to Mammoth Cave National Park, the world’s longest-known cave system. There are over 400 miles of underground passageways in the park which you can explore by bike, kayak, hiking, or on a ranger-led tour. Stay after dark for stunning stargazing. On a clear night, you might just see the International Space Station! There’s more to Cave City than caves, however. Take the kids to Dinosaur World for a very cool vacation experience — wandering among life-sized dinosaurs, riding mammoths, and panning for gemstones.

Historic buildings in Maysville, Kentucky.

Historic buildings in Maysville, Kentucky.

Maysville is a picturesque town in Northern Kentucky known for its history and hospitality. The town has two historic districts, downtown and a 1780s frontier village on the outskirts of town known as Old Washington. The latter traces the history of Kentucky from its rural beginnings in pioneer log cabins to grandiose brick homes and Georgian townhouses. Downtown Maysville is a hub of arts and entertainment with funky boutique shops, galleries, and charming eateries where you can sample the local specialty, goetta — a dish of sausage and steel-cut oats. While in town, be sure to visit the Old Pogue Distillery, one of the stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The distillery is housed in the 1845 Pogue family home along with a gift shop and bourbon museum. Tours are available by appointment so you’ll need to reserve in advance.

View from Jim Beam Bourbon Distillery and Homestead, a historic landmark in Clermont, Kentucky along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Clermont, south of Louisville , is the only place in Kentucky where you can spend the day hanging out with forest giants. The Bernheim Arboretum and Forest near town contains three massive human-like structures made from repurposed and natural materials. The striking sculptures, named Mama Loumari, Little Nis, and Little Elina, are within walking distance of each other on a two-mile roundtrip loop through the forest. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the forest with a canopy tree walk, 75 feet above the forest floor. Visit Bernheim in August for the annual CONNECT festival, a stunning evening show of interactive art exhibits that light up the forest. After a day in the forest, slake your thirst at the Jim Beam American Stillhouse, where seven generations of the Beam family have honed their craft. Not a whiskey drinker? No worries! The Forest Edge Winery is also well worth a visit with regular tasting events of its award-winning vintages.

Mil's Dairy Drive In in Rosine, Kentucky, via Facebook.

Rosine is a tiny community famous for being the birthplace of ‘the father of bluegrass,’ legendary musician Bill Munroe. Every summer, the Rosine Barn Jamboree plays tribute to this local icon with unforgettable evenings under the stars as the historic barn comes alive every Friday night with jumping bluegrass, country, and gospel music. True fans can also make the pilgrimage to Bill Munroe’s Home Place and Museum, which dives into the history of the bluegrass genre, Rosine, and the musician himself. Nearby is Uncle Pen’s Cabin. Now a small museum, this rustic cabin was once home to Pendleton Vandiver, one of Kentucky’s best fiddle players and Munroe’s uncle and playing partner.

Dawson Springs

Buildings at the Main Street intersection on the northern side of Railroad Avenue in Dawson Springs, Kentucky, USA.

Dawson Springs in Western Kentucky is the state’s first certified Trail Town. This designation is given to communities with an abundance of natural trails and scenic features, perfect for outdoor adventurers. Located in the Pennyrile region, the town is close to Pennyrile State Forest, where you’ll find some of Kentucky’s best equine trails winding over sandstone bluffs and alongside glittering streams. This area also boasts the Tradewater River, one of the largest in the state, and beautiful Lake Beshear, both of which are perfect spots for lazy summer boating or a fun canoe trip. Back in town, learn the history of this scenic area, known as a wellness resort since the early 1900s, at the Dawson Springs Museum and Art Centre, which is housed in the Old Commercial Bank, built in 1907.

Cool Kentucky Communities

The Kentucky Heritage Council celebrates a landmark this year, the 45th anniversary of their Main Street program, an initiative launched to preserve the history and heritage of the state’s vibrant downtowns. Kentucky knows it has something special, and this is a state that’s happy to share, showing off its many natural and historic attractions to visitors. A blend of southern charm and midwestern grit, Kentucky contains plenty of cool small towns to match its cool landscape — places where you can soak up the spirit and style of this unique state.
