Yale users: enter your yale.edu email address and then authenticate through CAS.

You may already be familiar with Safari Books Online - but we now have access via a new source.   Safari   is now available on a new platform.  How do these platforms differ?

• Unlimited use across the platform - formerly 100 users across the OhioLINK system.
• Now contains videos and tutorials!
• Note: We're working to get the titles uploaded into the OSU Library Catalog.
• If you are teaching a course and want to use one of the titles in your class, check your subject librarian so the items can be cataloged to best insure off-campus access.
• You must  provide your email  address for access. Use your OSU name.# email to access Safari.   This will get you into Safari. 
• To use advanced features, set-up an account.  Once you set up an account, you will need to sign in each time you use the database.
• Set up an account on the regular Safari site.
• Download the app from Google Play or Apple App Store
• Log in with the account you created

Take the following steps to access items in Safari Books Online if you have problems with access:

• Go to the Library Home Page, and Under Recommended Links, use the Research Database List link and type Safari in the search box.
• If you have an account, sign in to Safari
• If you DO NOT have an account, simply supply your osu.edu email address.  Make sure to use your name.# address.    If you have another department supplied email address , that email may not allow access to Safari. 
• Setting up an account is not required – but it gives you additional options and allows for accessing  a mobile app .

​ If you have problems connecting to the book you need : 

• This usually happens with the system had you as already logged in from your last visit.

If the above steps do not work, please email  Reference   with the following information:

This guide is a starting point on how to use O'Reilly Safari books through the WVC Library.

What Is Included In This Database?

Coverage:  Mostly 2004 to present

Users:  Unlimited simultaneous users

Source Types:  Tech books, manuals, videos, learning paths, case studies, interactive tutorials, and subject playlists on programming languages, applications, systems, networking, web design and development, and more. Over 48,000 titles; very current.

Subjects:  Computer science, web development, data science, applications, and increasing in resources on other subjects like Entrepreneurial , Real Estate, Fashion Design

How Can I Access This Database?

Accessing o'reilly tech books through wvc library.

O'Reilly Safari ebooks require a different login process compared to many online resources available through WVC Library. Your initial access O'Reilly Safari ebooks you will need to start from the WVC Library database collection page .

From the Subscription Database page you can either narrow down your results to "eBooks" from the Source Types dropdown, or click on O to retrieve all databases beginning an O.

WVC is not listed under the "Select your institution" drop-down menu. Click on "Not Listed? to continue.

(1)  If you  do not  have O'Reilly account you can enter your westvalley.edu email to gain temporary access.  After doing so, O'Reilly will send you a confirmation email with a link to create a password-protected account. (2)    If you already have an O'Reilly account you must use the link that reads "Already a user? Click here."  and log in. (3) Once you have a verified O'Reilly account you can bookmark the homepage you do not need to use the WVC Library link to access again.

Accessing O'Reilly Ebooks/Safari Books Online

Always access the database through uc.

The database  must  be accessed via the UC Libraries website or UC LibGuides (like this one).

Accessing the database independent of UC and creating an account  does not  grant you UC-provided access and in two weeks Safari will ask you to begin paying.

Only accessing through UC gives you free, unlimited access to the database.

Directions to Access the Database

• Go to the library homepage: libraries.uc.edu
• Click the red " Databases " tab above the search bar
• The database is also linked below
• Open the database
• In the Institution drop-down list click  "Unlisted? Click here."
• Enter your UC email address and click "Let's Go"
• When it loads, click  "Got it"
• Use the search bar to locate the resource you need.

O'Reilly Ebooks (formerly Safari Ebooks Online) provides electronic books and videos in computer science, information technology, business and related fields from O'Reilly and other IT and business publishers.  NOTE: First time users (authorized UC users) need to register for an account at O'Reilly with their UC email address to access the site.

The Problem with Copy/Paste

If you copy and paste a link to a O'Reilly Ebooks resource, the link will bring the next user to a paywall.

This page gives you options for how to give your students access to these resources and avoid paywalls.

Safari Books via the Catalog

In many cases, the e-book will be listed in the UC Libraries Catalog .

Give your students the link to the catalog record which includes an access link to the resource. You can see in this catalog record , a grey box titled "Click on the following to:". Within that grey box is a link to the e-book.

What is it?

Safari Books Online is an ebook collection containing thousands of books and videos on web design, software development, graphic design, and software programs.It is recommended that Reed students, faculty, and staff set up accounts to access the entire collection from on- and off-campus. For off-line viewing, there are  Android/iOS apps available.

Setting Up An Account

Creating an account allows you to save your viewing history of ebooks, videos, and learning paths found in Safari Books Online. To initiate making an account, click on a Safari ebook in the Library catalog or visit this link:  https://www.safaribooksonline. com/library/view/temporary- access/.

To initiate an account:

1. Enter your Reed email address. Accounts are free for Reed students, faculty, and staff.

2. Though you can immediately begin using Safari Books Online, it is recommended that you finish creating your account. Look for the “Welcome to Safari” email that includes a unique link and prompt for you to set up your personal Safari account. (This email could take 20-30 minutes.)

3. Follow the link, then choose a password (Pro Tip: Do not use your kerberos password.) This new password and your Reed email address will become your Safari Books Online login. 

4. Once you account is complete you can sign in to browse and search Safari Books Online from anywhere...no proxy required!  At the main Safari Books Online screen, use the Sign In button in the upper right hand corner.

After entering your email address, you will receive an email from O’Reilly to confirm your account.

Select “Finish Creating Your Free Account” and choose a password. You now have complete access to the platform.

Use Sign in with Apple on Mac

Sign in with Apple is an easy and private way to sign into apps and websites. It uses your Apple ID to securely create an account with an app or website—no need to fill out a form, verify your email address, or choose a new password—and simplifies signing in each time.

Create an account for an app or website

On your Mac, when you’re asked to create an account for an app or a website, click the button to sign in or continue with Apple, if available.

Follow the onscreen instructions, keeping the following in mind:

If you don’t want to use your real name, click the Name field, then enter a different name.

If you have more than one email address associated with your Apple ID in Apple ID settings, choose which email to use for the app or website.

If you prefer to keep your email address private, click Hide My Email. Apple generates a random and unique email address that’s used to forward emails from the app or website to your real email address.

Sign in to your account for an app or website

On your Mac, click the button to sign in or continue with Apple.

Enter your login password on your Mac (you may need to enter your Apple ID password instead) or, if your Mac or Magic Keyboard has Touch ID , use Touch ID.

You can also sign in from your other devices—iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV—where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID .

Change Sign in with Apple settings for an app or website

Open Apple ID settings for me

Click Sign-In & Security on the right, then click Edit next to Apps Using Apple ID.

Click an app or website in the sidebar, then do any of the following:

Turn off forwarding email: Turn off Forward To. You won’t receive any further emails from the app or website.

Stop using Sign in with Apple: Click Stop Using Apple ID. You may be asked to create a new account the next time you try to sign in with the app or website.

Change the address used to forward email from apps and websites

If you chose to hide your email when you created an account for an app or website, and you have more than one email address associated with your Apple ID in Apple ID settings, you can change the address that receives forwarded email. See Use Hide My Email .
