There again but if there is a free shuttle to Tynemouth would this be a great option for me to explore for the day, would therebe enough to do there for the day. As I haven't decided which way to go would appreciate advice on both questions please. Thanking you in advance.

The ships dock near the Royal Quays Outlet Centre on the north side of the Tyne, nearest Metro station is Meadowell

The 17 / 17A bus runs from Royal Quays passing several Metro stations.

Sorry, I caused a lot of that confusion!

You can buy a Metro ticket at the station. Ticket machines have a list of stations with the type of ticket you need to buy to go there next to it. I believe for your journey it will be £3.90, yes.

royal quays cruise ship

Hello I was involved in that earlier discussion as well!

What has happened in the past is that free shuttle buses have been laid on to take passengers to Tynemouth metro station. From there it's a straightforward journey into Newcastle.

Although there are nearer metro stations they are in less nice areas (though not unsafe) than Tynemouth. So forget about the other metro stations. If the weather is in your favour Tynemouth is a lovely area to spend a few hours.

Also, taxis will be waiting for all the "high-rolling" passengers, ready to whisk them off to the bright lights of Newcastle - if there's two or three of you that would be an option too.

I, too, was involved in that thread and I would direct attention to the final post, written after my own journey.

" ... a lot of discussion was on Percy Main, what is this and why are they talking about ..."

Just a bit of friendly chat between those familiar with Percy Main - ignore it.

" I googled the port and it says North Shields"

Yes, the postal address is North Shields but there are closer Metro stations to the International Ferry Terminal than that of North Shields town itself - Percy Main and Meadow Well.

" If i was going to city of Newcastle I just walk to North Shields metro stop and hop on metro to central"

No, it is too far - look at the Google map of the area.

" cost day tripper £3.90. Would this be correct?"

From North Shields, Meadow Well or Percy Main - yes. But from Tynemouth it is £4.80.

" if there is a free shuttle to Tynemouth would this be a great option for me to explore for the day, would therebe enough to do there for the day"

It depends on how you would prefer to spend your time. Newcastle is a city with typical "city things" to see and do, Tynemouth has a main street (choice of eating-places, one supermarket and a few shops) with a ruined priory and castle and walks along the sea front (the Longsands).

Another thought ...

When Googling - for maps and/or information - do not confuse the International Ferry Terminal (where the Royal Quays Outlet Centre is located) with the North Shields Ferry Terminal, at the foot of the town, which serves the shuttle ferry to and from South Shields).

From Meadow Well Tynemouth and Newcastle are on the same line, just in different directions. By city centre we mean Newcastle city centre. So, you can go Tynemouth and then just hop back on the Metro and it'll take you to Newcastle - the station you'll want to get off at is called Monument

Monument station is right in the heart of Newcastle city centre. That's the place to head for if you want to explore the wonderful architecture of Grainger Town, and take the walk down Grey St to Quayside.

The cruise berths are located adjacent to Royal Quays Marina, where there is not much to explore. There is no cruise terminal building in Newcastle yet.

Newcastle International Airport lies 15 miles to the north of the Cruise Terminal and passengers can be there in 30 minutes. Newcastle is well connected with the rest of the UK by the A1(M) (north/south) and A69 (east/west). Newcastle's Central Station is nine miles or 20 minutes from the Cruise Terminal, with intercity services serving Edinburgh, York and London. (London can be reached in under three hours). Hourly services operate across the Pennines to the UK's west coast and Lake District.

The Metro from Newcastle Central Station to Percy Main takes approximately 15-20 minutes with a further 20 min walk to the terminal.

Taxi to city center is only 12 pounds, fixed rate, slightly more expensive coming back.

Cruise lines often offer shuttles for 16 Euros p.p. and do only so the night before as not to jeopardize their excursion sales.

So if more than one person is in your party consider a taxi.

Sightseeing:

Newcastle-upon-Tyne , or Newcastle as it is more commonly known, has worked hard to throw off its image as a dreary, industrial city and to develop a thriving tourism industry. Clearly successful in its attempts at regeneration, Newcastle has now become a highly popular UK weekend destination, particularly with the younger crowd who flock to its bars, restaurants and nightclubs, intent on having a good time.

Situated on the River Tyne's north bank, the city boasts a 2,000-year-old history and a treasure-trove of architecture, with the most classical buildings listed in the UK. Although the city really only reached prominence in the Industrial Revolution, it has long been a capital and defensive point of the north of England for the Romans and Saxons respectively. The city's origins as a Roman town are still evident in Hadrian's Wall, whose ruins can be seen stretching eastwards to Wallsend.

Today, these Roman ruins and the grand elegance of areas such as the neoclassical Grainger Town in the city center contrast with the ultra modern buildings of the city's new Quayside development. Newcastle's waterfront glitters with chic boutiques, excellent restaurants, stylish hotels and modern art. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge , a work of art in itself, arches across the River Tyne to link Newcastle to Gateshead Quays. Normally the bridge will tilt only once a day at noon.

The city's modern amenities lie comfortably alongside a myriad of historic sites, parks, traditional markets, galleries and museums, and although it may not yet be on everybody's list of top destinations, Newcastle is a thriving, vibrant city with plenty to offer the visitor.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

CitySightseeing bus tours depart from Newcastle Central Station.  The tour consists of many stops including St James' Park, Quayside, BALTIC center for Contemporary Art, The Sage Gateshead, Gateshead Quays and Castle Keep...you are free to hop on and off as often as you like.   The partly open and partly covered top deck buses ensure you get a top deck view whatever the weather. The tour has a pre-recorded commentary in English and lasts between 30 - 60 minutes depending on which tour you take.

Shopping and Food

The main shopping street in the city is Northumberland Street. In a 2004 report, it was ranked as the most expensive shopping street in the UK for rent, outside of London. Other shopping centers in Newcastle include the relatively modern Eldon Garden and Monument Mall complexes, the Newgate center, Central Arcade and the traditional Grainger Market all within easy walking distance from each other. Outside the city, the largest suburban shopping areas are Gosforth and Byker. The largest indoor shopping center in Europe, The Metrocenter , is located in Gateshead.

If you have some time to kill visit Royal Quays outlet center , about 10 minutes walk from where you are docked.

The currency throughout the UK is the pound (£). You may also hear the slang term quid for pounds. Scottish bank notes are frowned upon in other parts of the UK, so change the notes before leaving Scotland.

Cash machines (ATM) or less formally 'holes in the wall' are very widely available and usually dispense £10 and £20 notes.

Visa, Mastercard and Maestro, are accepted by most shops and restaurants.

139 passengers, crew sickened during gastrointestinal illness outbreak on Queen Victoria cruise: CDC

The Cunard Cruise Line ship departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Jan. 22.

Nearly 140 people have fallen sick during a gastrointestinal illness outbreak on a three-week Queen Victoria cruise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Overall, 123 passengers and 16 crew members have reported being ill during the voyage as of Thursday, according to the CDC . The cases are for the entire voyage and do not represent the number of active cases, the agency said.

The predominant symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting, the CDC said. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, according to the CDC.

There are 1,824 passengers and 967 crew members on the ship in total, according to the CDC.

In response to the outbreak, the cruise line and crew have isolated ill passengers and crew and increased cleaning and disinfection procedures "according to the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan," the CDC said.

PHOTO: MS Queen Victoria cruise ship, operated by Cunard Line, is moored at the Royal Quays Marina in North Shields, after returning from Barbados, April 19, 2022.

"Cunard confirmed that a small number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria," Cunard said in a statement. "They immediately activated their enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all guests and crew on board."

"Measures have been effective," the statement continued.

The cruise is scheduled to go to San Francisco before ending in Honolulu on Feb. 12.

The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program is monitoring the situation remotely, including "reviewing the ship’s outbreak response and sanitation procedures," the agency said.

This is the second cruise outbreak reported by the CDC so far this year. Last month, 100 people -- including 92 passengers and eight crew members -- were reported ill during a Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Constellation cruise that sailed from Jan. 3 to Jan. 12. The cause was norovirus, the CDC said.

The CDC logged 14 outbreaks on cruise ships in 2023, mostly caused by norovirus.

Medical staff on cruise ships under U.S. jurisdiction must report gastrointestinal illness cases to the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program when at least 2% of passengers or crew have a gastrointestinal illness.

AIDA Cruises fleet

Review of aida cruises.

AIDA Cruises (aida.de) is a German cruise line brand, British-American owned and based in Rostock Germany . Founded originally as Deutsche Seereederei, in the 1960s the company entered the cruise industry.

Note: In January 2022 was sold AIDAmira to Ambassador Cruise Line . In June 2022 was sold AIDAvita . In January 2023 was sold AIDAaura (left the fleet in October 2023).

Company History and Changes

In 2000, AIDA Kreuzfahrten was purchased by "P&O Princess Cruises". After 2003's merger of Carnival Corporation and P&O Princess (forming Carnival Corporation ), AIDA's executive control was transferred to Costa Group (responsible for Carnival Group's European brands). On June 7, 2015 ( AIDAcara 's birthday), AIDA celebrated the company's 20th anniversary. AIDA was the first to offer year-round cruises leaving from Germany.

The company's current President is Felix Eichhorn.

Until 2023, Costa Group's and Carnival Asia's CEO was Michael Thamm. As his position was not filled, AIDA's and Costa's presidents now report directly to Josh Weinstein (Carnival Corporation's CEO).

AIDA Cruises logo

AIDA continued its long-standing partnership with the shipbuilder Meyer Werft ( Papenburg Germany ) and ordered two new large-sized vessels (AIDAnova 2019, AIDAcosma 2021), each with 2500 staterooms and max pax capacity 5200.

As a pioneer in the ship cruising industry, AIDA also sets an example for environmental protection through its technology upgrades and innovations. By initiating the "Green Cruising" concept, AIDA became the world's first cruise company to operate a new generation of LNG-powered ships using 100% LNG (liquefied natural gas), thus eliminating emissions of sulfur oxides and soot particles.

AIDA Cruises Hyperion class ship (AIDAprima, AIDAperla)

AIDA ships cater to German-speaking cruisers and are renowned for their casual service and youthful style. German is the language that is the primary spoken on all AIDA boats, because most pf the company's customers are German-speaking (germans, Swiss, Austrians). They tend to be young and active, as AIDA's seagoing "club resorts" offer many amenities and facilities attracting younger vacationers.

On all AIDA vessels. dining is entirely open-seating and takes place in two or three complementary self-service restaurants. Being without MDRs (main dining rooms), the ship's buffet is the conceptual substitute. Passengers tired of the buffet meals can alternatively try the a-la-carte-priced restaurants pampering with high-quality gourmet cuisine and an elegant atmosphere.

On June 24, 2023, on three ships (Nova, Perla, Prima) AIDA introduced the Soulkitchen. The a-la-carte-priced restaurant has a 3-course menu with plant-based vegan dishes (including meat and seafood alternatives) and organic beverages (coffee, tea, fresh juices) as well as non-alcoholic wines and spirits.

AIDA emphasizes the ultra-casual travel experience. AIDA aims also on fitness and wellness activities in the popular AIDA Fit & Fun and Spa, and on the expansive decks. There is lively entertainment at night in the theatre. The well-patronized lounges and bars create an easygoing, festive atmosphere.

AIDA Cruises Hyperion class ship (AIDAprima, AIDAperla)

All AIDA liners have on their top-deck Freikorperkultur (FKK Bereich) - a fore-located Nudist Deck. This is a generously-sized outdoor area where naked passengers can enjoy sunbathing protected from the gaze of curious suitors. The special FKK deck area is located forward on the ship's top-deck. In most cruise ports, and especially in countries where the local culture doesn't allow nudism in public spaces (for example, Muslim countries), the ship's FKK deck can be accessed only in swimwear. On most AIDA liners, the FKK deck has 1 (or 2) whirlpools / hot tubs.

HELIOS-Class ships (newest)

AIDA's newest class of cruise vessels (succeeding the Hyperion-Class ships AIDAprima and AIDAperla) is called "Helios-class".

AIDA Cruises Helios class ship (AIDAnova, AIDAcosma)

These are LNG-powered ships produced by Meyer Turku , with GT-tonnage 183,900 tons and passenger capacity 5200 (lower berths / 6600 max). The first of the newbuilds ( AIDAnova ) was delivered in December 2018, the second ( AIDAcosma ) in April 2022.

On February 27, 2018, Carnival Corporation signed a shipbuilding contract for a 3rd unit for AIDA (delivery in 2023). This was the 98th cruise ship order for the industry's global fleet (order book 2018-2026). However, in June 2021 was announced that the newbuild ( Carnival Jubilee ) will be assigned to the CCL-Carnival fleet .

Each vessel has 21 cabin categories (including Penthouse Suite, Family and Single-occupancy staterooms), 17 restaurants (including self-serve, a-la-carte priced, 5x specialty), sports deck / deck 16 (water park with 1 slide, mini-golf course, ropes course), pool deck (will retractable glass roof and beach-club complex), 2-deck / 2-level Promenade Deck (connected via stairs).

In July 2015, Carnival Corporation signed a shipbuilding agreement with Meyer Werft for the construction of all 4 new class vessels. Of these 4 new cruise liners , 2 are for Costa Cruises and the other 2 for AIDA. The 4-vessel contract was part of a previously announced larger shipbuilding order with Fincantieri (Italy) and Meyer Werft for all 9 new vessels with scheduled deliveries between 2019 and 2022. Costa ships were built in Turku Finland , AIDA ships - in Papenburg Germany .

Managed by Costa Group, the combined Costa-AIDA fleet became Europe's largest. In 2014, one out of every two cruise ship tourists in Europe sailed on either AIDA or Costa ship. In 2015, Costa Group had 20 offices in 14 countries, around 27,000 shipboard employees and total passenger capacity of 68000+ berths (fleetwide).

AIDA Evolution (fleet modernization program 2025-2026)

In February 2024 was announced the company's largest fleet modernization) drydock upgrade and refurbishment program "AIDA Evolution".

The project was for the 3x SPHINX-class units (Diva, Bella, Luna) with each drydocking taking ~6 weeks. AIDAdiva is scheduled for drydocking in 2025-Q2, AIDAbella - in 2025-Q3, and AIDAluna - in 2026-Q2.

By this project, the three vessels will be completely overhauled, refitted and upgraded with new technologies and equipment and systems. Interior upgrades include refurbishment (complete redecoration) of all passenger staterooms, new Suites, revamped public spaces (carpeting, walling, artworks) more dining options/new restaurants and bars, new fun-themed activity and lounge zones catering to families with children, exclusive areas and services catering to Suite guests. The Theatrium will be enhanced with new seating arrangements and a color scheme.

AIDA cruise ship robots

An innovative AIDA and Costa program implemented the latest cyborg technology in both fleets. Humanoid robots (named Pepper) greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the voyage by providing information and tips on shipboard dining, entertainment, pre-scheduled daily events, shore excursions/tours.

Peper robots communicate in 3 different languages (English, German, Italian), to move fluidly and even to interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

The new technology was first tested on AIDAstella where Pepper learned to engage with passengers and crew. The first set of robots were introduced on Costa Diadema and AIDAprima in April 2016. By the end of summer 2016, Pepper robots were added on all AIDA and Costa liners.

Unlike other ships, AIDA's off-duty (human) crew are allowed to mingle with passengers.

AIDA's LNG-powered liners

The AIDAprima ship's first successful test run for LNG supply was in Hamburg Germany on May 7, 2016. While berthed, the ship was successfully provided with LNG at all the itinerary's ports of call (Hamburg, Rotterdam, Le Havre, Southampton, Zeebrugge).

LNG cruise ship propulsion scheme (Rolls-Royce design)

The company's statistics show that an AIDA vessel spends ~40% of its operating time in ports. Compared to using conventional marine diesel (0,1% sulfur content), by using LNG the vessel's emissions are considerably reduced even further - Sulfur oxides (SOx) and soot particles are eliminated (while in port), nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were reduced by up to 80%, carbon (CO2) emissions were lowered by 20%.

The AIDA ships (produced by Meyer Papenburg ) are 100% LNG-powered. AIDA invested in research and testing of LNG technologies since 2015.

In 2013, AIDA collaborated on LNG hybrid barges with Becker Marine Systems. The innovative and flexible solution is used on ships moored in Port Hamburg. Since May 30, 2015, AIDA's ships (starting with AIDAsol) have been regularly bunkered/supplied with LNG at Hamburg's Hafencity Terminal.

AIDA ships use just 3 liters (0,8 US gallons) of fuel on average per person on board for a 100 km (62 ml) trip. This was confirmed by an independent expert study in 2012. Thanks to the use of new technologies and the economical handling of resources, additional progress was made.

The company's statistics for 2016 (over 2012) showed 9% less energy used per person on board, reduced water consumption per person on board (by 7,2%) and reduced CO2 emissions (by 7,7%).

In August 2019, AIDA contracted the Candian stock-listed company Corvus Energy for delivery and installation fleetwide of the world's largest ship battery-package ESS (Energy Storage System / air-cooled system with patented single-cell thermal isolation). Orca ESS (Corvus Energy's biggest battery pack) has capacity 6100 kW per hour - or double the capacity of currently largest battery-packed ( electric ) ferries . Battery power is combined with the vessel's powerplant and propulsion. AIDA's other partners for this project are ABB Marine & Ports (producer of Azipods/electric propulsion units) and Siemens AG (Europe's largest industrial manufacturing company).

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, AIDA suspended its entire fleet's passenger shipping operations (all liners) canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 14, 2020, through late-April 2021. Operations temporarily resumed on October 17 with AIDAblu (7-day Mediterranean from Civitavecchia-Rome, through Nov 28) and fleetwide on November 1. However, on Oct 29, due to Germany's imposed public life and travel restrictions, AIDA canceled all voyages through Nov 30. AIDAperla and AIDAmar were scheduled for 7-day ex-Gran Canaria roundtrips (in the Canaries) starting December 5, but the program was canceled. AIDAprima's Dubai 2021 winter program was canceled.

Initially, as exceptions were announced the ships Perla (Aug 12, from Hamburg), Diva (Aug 15, from Warnemunde-Rostock) and Prima (Aug 15, from Kiel). However, these departures were canceled as the flag-state (Italy) delayed its approval for the restart. Eventually, AIDA extended its passenger shipping pause through August 2021 (fleetwide thru August).

Next are listed all AIDA shps and their first departure dates/regions - AIDAperla (Mar 20, 2021/Canaries), AIDAnova (Aug 7, 2021/Baltic from Kiel), AIDAsol (May 22, 2021/ cruises to nowhere from Kiel), AIDAmar (July 31, 2021/Baltic from Hamburg), AIDAblu (May 30, 2021/Greece from Corfu), AIDAluna (Sept 4, 2021/Iceland-Norway from Kiel), AIDAstella (July 29, 2021/Mediterranean from Palma de Majorca), AIDAprima (July 31, 2021/Baltic from Kiel), AIDAbella (Sept 5, 2021/Baltic from Kiel), AIDAdiva (Oct 16, 2021/Baltic from Warnemunde), AIDAaura (May 7, 2022/UK from Hamburg), AIDAvita (Mar 31, 2022/Norway from Hamburg), AIDAmira (April 15, 2022/Eastern Mediterranean from Heraklion Crete/ canceled ), AIDAcosma (February 26, 2022/ Maiden Voyage from Hamburg).

  • On July 9, 2020, AIDA announced that will restart operations with three liners and cruises to nowhere (portless itineraries with roundtrips from Germany). AIDA's "nowhere ships" were AIDAperla (August 12 / 3-nights from Hamburg), AIDAmar (August 12, from Warnemunde) and AIDAblu (August 16 / 4-nights from Kiel). Bookings were opened on July 9.
  • In June 2021 was canceled AIDAcosma's 2021 program (Arabian season from Dubai and Abu Dhabi) and the Canary Islands deployment (7-day roundtrips from Tenerife and Gran Canaria).
  • In July 2021 were canceled the winter 2021-2022 programs of AIDAaura (South Africa from Cape Town), AIDAvita (including 2x 43-day roundtrips from Hamburg to the Caribbean and Bermuda), AIDAmira (Aegean Islands from Heraklion Crete).
  • IMPORTANT: On June 23, 2021, Carnival Corporation (shipowner) announced that AIDAcara has been sold (to a Russian buyer). The 1996-built (as Clubschiff) boat left the fleet after 25 years of service. Cara was AIDA's first-ever vessel.
  • IMPORTANT: On June 14, 2022, was announced that the 20-year-old AIDAvita (2002-built) will not resume operations, being sold (to an undisclosed buyer) and leaving the fleet.

All affected bookings received full refunds, including on prepurchased through AIDA packages and services. For the period, all the company's employees had the options to either remain onboard or leave the vessel and return home (without terminating the job contract with AIDA Kreuzfahrten). All affected bookings received 110% refund in FCC (future cruise credit). The FCC can be used for rebooking on any cruise ship/itinerary (fleetwide) with departure through December 31, 2021. The FCC is redeemable for MyAIDA (pre-purchasing shore excursions, onboard specialty dining and wellness services) or can be transferred to OBC (onboard credit).

(animal cruelty) The Faroe Islands cruise boycott

In mid-July 2016, AIDA became one of the three cruise ship companies (together with Disney and Hapag-Lloyd ) that banned Faroe Islands (a Danish territory) as a destination part of their North European itineraries.

The boycott is due to the island nation's traditional mass slaughter of pilot whales each year. The protected by Denmark gruesome practice of killing whales is called “Grindadrap Grind". Locals use motorboats to drive a pod of whales into a harbor. The defenseless animals are dragged to the shallow water and brutally slaughtered by locals armed with knives (16-19 cm / 6-8 inch long) while their families cheer them on. The killing party even rip out baby whales from their mothers.

The Faroe Islands have a population of about 50,000 and kill each year over 1,000 pilot whales. You can see the cruise ship schedule of Torshavn - Faroes most visited port. All cruise lines with scheduled visits to the Faroes are accused of supporting the brutal whaling practices. Whaling is still officially approved and carried out by the "civilized" countries Japan, Norway, and Iceland, killing over 2000 whales each year and trading in whale products.

AIDA's response was to the new "Faroese Pilot Whaling Act" by the local government, which continues to allow pilot whales to be culled or massacred. It also empowers local authorities to imprison (for up to 2 years) people found guilty of impeding these whaling activities - despite all the international condemnations.

Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace are among the largest organizations taking direct actions against the "Faroese Pilot Whaling Act". Most of the available online haunting images of slaughtered whales lying in a sea of blood are released by these organizations.

AIDA was the first of the major cruise companies to ban the Faroe Islands as a cruise destination. The move was a serious blow to the local tourism industry.

The 7 classes of Royal Caribbean cruise ships, explained

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Even if you're a newcomer to cruising, you've probably heard of Royal Caribbean 's giant Icon Class and Oasis Class ships. With the exception of a single MSC Cruises vessel , they're far bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat and like nothing else you'll find at sea.

Indeed, when you hear people talking about the wow factor of Royal Caribbean's "floating megaresorts," it's likely they're referring to the six ships in these two sets of vessels. This includes the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas — the world's biggest cruise ship.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

That said, not all Royal Caribbean ships are similarly supersized. While the line is perhaps best known for giant vessels — it operates six of the 10 biggest cruise ships in the world — it also markets some relatively smaller, more intimate ships.

In fact, Royal Caribbean has eight vessels that are less than half the size of the Oasis Class ships.

If you're thinking about booking a Royal Caribbean cruise, you'll find the line offers a wide range of ship styles and designs.

With the relatively recent removal of two older ships from its fleet, Royal Caribbean — the world's largest cruise line by passenger capacity — now has 27 oceangoing vessels in all. That's more than any other major cruise line, and it means that you have a lot of choices when it comes to picking the perfect Royal Caribbean ship for you.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options is that the 27 ships can easily be bunched into just seven groups of vessels that have similar amenities. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

These seven groups are made up of ships constructed around the same time with the same basic design. They're known in cruise industry lingo as "classes," and each has its own look and feel.

An introduction to Royal Caribbean ships

royal quays cruise ship

For the most part, Royal Caribbean operates big, bustling megaships that will appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. The company has built its brand around offering vacationers a ton of diversions on its ships, whether for dining (some vessels have more than 20 distinct places to grab a bite) or entertainment. Its vessels are lively and fun.

The over-the-top megaresort experience on a Royal Caribbean ship varies from class to class, though.

The line's one Icon Class and five Oasis Class ships are unlike anything else you'll find at sea when it comes to size, amenities and capacity. They each can hold more than 6,600 passengers, with every berth full.

Somewhat smaller in size but still giant by any measure, each of the line's five Quantum Class and three Freedom Class vessels has a total capacity ranging from around 4,500 to 5,600 passengers. With space for around 3,800 passengers at maximum occupancy, the line's five Voyager Class vessels are relatively large, too.

Together, the 19 vessels of these five classes — Icon, Oasis, Quantum, Freedom and Voyager — make up Royal Caribbean's big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at around 2,500 passengers.

While no longer the focus at Royal Caribbean, the smaller ships (which are generally the line's older ships) allow it to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail per day.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

As you might expect, the biggest Royal Caribbean ships have the most amenities. With each step down in size, you'll find fewer restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and attractions. Even the smallest Royal Caribbean ships still have quite a bit to offer, though.

If you're sailing with the line for the first time, it's important to understand that not all of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions and venues are present on all its ships. For instance, while every Royal Caribbean vessel now has one of the line's iconic climbing walls (some have two), only the 19 ships of the line's big-ship classes have a FlowRider surfing simulator. Only the 14 ships of the Icon, Oasis, Freedom and Voyager classes have ice skating rinks.

Here is a look at the seven classes of Royal Caribbean ships in more detail.

Ships in class: Icon of the Seas (2024), Star of the Seas (coming in 2025); unnamed vessel (coming in 2026)

Size: 250,800 tons

royal quays cruise ship

Is your idea of a great vacation a trip to a megaresort loaded with more restaurants, bars, theaters and watery amusements than you can imagine? Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class is the ship class for you.

As mentioned above, Icon of the Seas — the only Icon Class ship currently in operation — is bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat at 250,800 tons, and for big-ship lovers, there's really nothing quite like it. The two more Icon Class ships debuting soon will be equally over-the-top in size and venues.

Each of the Icon Class vessels that are operating or soon to debut has been designed with seven separate pools (a new record for a cruise ship), a water park with six waterslides (also a record), a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks.

Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks, just in case you want to get your Michelle Kwan on.

What you won't find on the Icon Class ships is intimacy. These are vessels that can carry as many as 7,600 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,300 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with nearly 10,000 people.

If the above sounds downright outrageous to you, it is. Keep in mind, though, that the biggest megaresorts on land are even bigger. The biggest resort in the U.S. — The Venetian in Las Vegas — has 7,092 rooms. That means it can hold more than 14,000 guests, assuming there are two people per room.

By that measure, Icon Class ships are almost small.

royal quays cruise ship

Icon Class ships also don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean's designers are masters at creating vessels that can carry thousands and thousands of people but still feel relatively uncrowded — at least in some areas. You can have a quiet afternoon reading a book on a bench in the sometimes nearly empty, tree-lined Central Park area of Icon of the Seas while, just a few decks above, thousands of vacationers are frolicking about at the ship's pools.

Related: Why Royal Caribbean's new Icon of the Seas won't feel as crowded as you think

Only one ship in this series (Icon of the Seas) is currently operating, but the second vessel in the series (Star of the Seas) is already open for bookings. Its maiden voyage is set for Aug. 17, 2025.

Quantum Class

Ships in class: Quantum of the Seas (2014), Anthem of the Seas (2015), Ovation of the Seas (2016), Spectrum of the Seas (2019) and Odyssey of the Seas (2021)

Size: 168,666 to 169,379 tons

royal quays cruise ship

Unveiled in 2014, the Quantum Class may be Royal Caribbean's most innovative class ever.

In addition to a wide range of restaurants, bars and showrooms, the five ships in the class feature some of the most unusual new attractions you'll find at sea. This includes bumper car pavilions (yes, somehow they found room for these) and skydiving simulators.

The ships also have glass-enclosed capsules mounted on mechanical arms that will take you soaring into the sky for bird's-eye views. They're called the North Star rides, and they may be the oddest attractions ever added to the top of a cruise ship.

Quantum Class ships also feature unusual, multilevel entertainment spaces with floor-to-ceiling glass walls called Two70. The spaces are home to innovative shows that often feature aerial performers, singers and dancers who emerge from openings in the floor or the ceiling. At certain times of the day, the glass walls transform into an expansive ambient surface called Vistarama that projects real and imagined scenes.

Related: The 10 wildest attractions you'll find on a cruise ship

All the above come in addition to many of the core Royal Caribbean attractions you'll find on most of the brand's ships, including pools, rock climbing walls, casinos, spas and Broadway-style shows. But don't expect all the classic Royal Caribbean features on Quantum Class ships. For instance, you won't find ice skating rinks on the vessels even though they're a staple of all other big Royal Caribbean ships. Quantum Class ships also don't have water parks.

The Quantum Class ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels (and thus don't have quite as much room for things like ice skating rinks). At around 169,000 tons, though, they're still among the biggest ships at sea, with a significant number of venues.

royal quays cruise ship

They also can carry a lot of people. Most of the ships in the class hold 4,180 passengers at double occupancy — 4,905 if every berth is filled. One exception is Spectrum of the Seas, which was specifically built for the China market with some design differences. It can hold up to 5,622 passengers. Additionally, the newest ship in the series, Odyssey of the Seas, can hold up to 5,498 passengers.

Related: 4 things you'll love about Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas

One more big difference between the ships of the Quantum Class and other big Royal Caribbean ships: The Quantum Class ships are designed to be more versatile.

If you look closely at their deck plans, you'll notice that more of their main attractions are indoors and protected from the elements than the ships of the Icon, Oasis or Freedom classes, for example.

One of the two main pool areas on each Quantum Class ship (except Odyssey of the Seas) is enclosed. The bumper car pavilions are, too, doubling as roller skating rinks or indoor basketball courts. This allows Royal Caribbean to send the ships to cooler regions of the world, such as Alaska and Northern Europe, where the temperatures aren't always conducive to outdoor activity.

Royal Caribbean has also used some Quantum Class ships for sailings out of China.

Oasis Class

Ships in class: Oasis of the Seas (2009), Allure of the Seas (2010), Harmony of the Seas (2016), Symphony of the Seas (2018), Wonder of the Seas (2022) and Utopia of the Seas (coming 2024)

Size: 226,838 to 236,857 tons

royal quays cruise ship

Until this year's debut of Icon of the Seas, these were the world's biggest and most venue-packed cruise ships. Although they're not quite as big as the new vessel, they remain among the very best options for vacationers who love nothing more than a big, bustling resort with every sort of amusement known to humans.

Each of the Oasis Class vessels has three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and a zip line on their top decks — a nearly as wide array of features as the new Icon of the Seas. Inside the vessels, as on Icon of the Seas, you'll find a seemingly endless number of lounges, bars, restaurants and shops, as well as large casinos, spas and showrooms. Like Icon of the Seas, each ship has an indoor ice skating rink.

As is the case for Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class ships, which have many similarities with the Oasis Class ships, these vessels carry a huge number of people. They can carry as many as 6,988 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,200 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with more than 9,000 people — not quite as many as the nearly 10,000 you could find on an Icon Class ship but still a huge number.

The good news for those of you worried about excessive crowds is that, as is the case with the Icon Class ships, the Oasis Class ships don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean designed them with a "neighborhood" concept that spreads passengers out in seven or eight (depending on the ship) distinct areas, such as the Pool and Sports Zone and the Boardwalk amusement zone. A lot of thought went into how passengers move between these neighborhoods, too.

royal quays cruise ship

Note that there are a few differences from ship to ship in the Oasis Class series. For starters, the three newest and largest ships in the series — Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas — have a few additional attractions and venues. Among them is the Ultimate Abyss, a terrifying slide that drops nine decks. (Royal Caribbean says it drops 10 decks, but don't be fooled; the line counts a nonexistent Deck 13.)

There are also giant waterslides on four of the five ships. Only Allure of the Seas is missing them. There are plans to add waterslides to Allure of the Seas, but they were put on hold after COVID-19 shut down cruising in 2020.

Related: The 6 most spectacular waterslides and watery fun zones at sea

A handful of restaurants also differ from ship to ship in the series.

The newest and largest ship in the series, Wonder of the Seas, has the most differences from the other Oasis Class vessels. At 236,857 tons, it's about 4% bigger than the next biggest ship in the series; the extra space is devoted to such additions as a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, a restaurant and a sun deck.

A sixth ship in the Oasis Class series, Utopia of the Seas , is scheduled to debut in July. Construction of the vessel began in April 2022 at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France — the same shipyard that built Wonder of the Seas.

Radiance Class

Ships in class: Radiance of the Seas (2001), Brilliance of the Seas (2002), Serenade of the Seas (2003) and Jewel of the Seas (2004)

Size: 90,090 tons

royal quays cruise ship

Not sure you want to sail on a megaship with 6,000 people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? The Radiance Class ships may be the perfect solution.

At 90,090 tons, the four vessels in the series are less than half the size of Royal Caribbean's massive Icon Class and Oasis Class ships, but still big enough that they have a lot to offer.

Each vessel has more than a half-dozen places to eat, including the main restaurant, a casual buffet, a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant and an Asian venue.

You'll also find three pools on each ship, whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, a sports court and an adults-only solarium. Each ship has a theater, a spa, a casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

What you won't find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions — such as ice skating rinks, surfing simulators, giant waterslides and bumper car pavilions — that Royal Caribbean has put on its bigger vessels. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, the Radiance class probably isn't for you.

Each Radiance Class ship holds more than 2,100 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled). That's less than half the number of passengers on the biggest Royal Caribbean ships.

That makes them perfect for cruisers who want to get away from the sort of crowds on the biggest megaships without giving up many of the amenities that big ships offer.

Freedom Class

Ships in class: Freedom of the Seas (2006), Liberty of the Seas (2007) and Independence of the Seas (2008)

Size: 154,407 to 156,271 tons

royal quays cruise ship

As recently as 2009, these were the biggest cruise ships in the world, and they're still quite big compared to almost all other cruise vessels afloat.

While no longer on the list of the top 25 biggest cruise ships — they've been displaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon, Oasis and Quantum Class vessels, as well as several ships from other lines — the Freedom Class vessels offer a classic big-ship experience with lots of restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top attractions.

The Freedom Class ships, notably, were the first Royal Caribbean ships to feature a FlowRider surfing simulator on their top decks — now a signature attraction for the line. The vessels also have multiple pool areas, a water park, a miniature golf course and a rock climbing wall on their top decks (which are among the most activity-packed at sea).

Indeed, the top decks of Freedom Class ships are more loaded with attractions than any other Royal Caribbean vessels except the Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels. You just won't find several of the most over-the-top attractions, such as zip lines, that Icon Class and Oasis Class ships have.

royal quays cruise ship

In their interiors, Freedom Class vessels have the mall-like Royal Promenade spaces filled with eateries, bars and shops that have become standard on bigger Royal Caribbean ships. They also have large casinos and spas.

Related: Royal Caribbean just fixed the worst part of cruising

At around 156,000 tons, the Freedom Class ships are about 38% smaller than the Icon Class ships and 31% smaller than the Oasis Class ships, a significant step down in size. They're nearly 8% smaller than the Quantum Class ships.

They also carry significantly fewer passengers than the Oasis Class ships. Freedom of the Seas and Independence of the Seas carry about 3,900 passengers at double occupancy (closer to 4,600 with every berth filled). Liberty of the Seas can carry several hundred more.

Voyager Class

Ships in class: Voyager of the Seas (1999), Explorer of the Seas (2000), Adventure of the Seas (2001), Navigator of the Seas (2002) and Mariner of the Seas (2003)

Size: 137,276 to 139,999 tons

royal quays cruise ship

The Voyager Class ships are similar to Freedom Class ships but shorter in length. In other words, the Freedom Class was a stretched version of the Voyager Class.

Like the Freedom Class vessels, the Voyager Class ships have many of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions, including rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks. In fact, the ships were the first at Royal Caribbean to have those attractions.

Voyager Class ships were also the first to feature a Royal Promenade with bars, cafes and shops in their interior. Each also has several specialty restaurants in addition to the main dining room and casual buffet; specialty restaurants include a version of Royal Caribbean's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and an Italian restaurant.

One of the main differences between the Voyager Class and the Freedom Class is that the Royal Promenades on Voyager Class ships are shorter. The top-deck areas of the Voyager Class ships are also more truncated than the Freedom Class vessels.

There are also fewer cabins on the Voyager Class ships, resulting in fewer passengers on board a typical sailing. Most of the ships carry around 3,100 passengers at double occupancy — about 800 fewer than the typical Freedom Class ship.

At around 139,000 tons, the ships are about 11% smaller than the Freedom Class ships.

There are also some variations in attractions among the five Voyager Class vessels. Navigator of the Seas has a relatively new waterslide zone that's home to The Blaster, the longest waterslide at sea . You won't find that on the other ships, though most of them have different waterslides. Only three of the five ships — Voyager of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas — have laser tag courses. Adventure of the Seas is the only vessel in the class with a kiddie splash zone.

Vision Class

Ships in class: Grandeur of the Seas (1996), Rhapsody of the Seas (1997), Enchantment of the Seas (1997) and Vision of the Seas (1998)

Size: 73,817 to 82,910 tons

royal quays cruise ship

Dating to the 1990s, the Vision Class ships are the smallest at Royal Caribbean, and they offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels.

In general, they appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise ship as well as those who care more about the destinations they visit than the onboard attractions.

Along those lines, Royal Caribbean often sends some of its Vision Class ships to Europe in the summer to operate port call-intensive itineraries. The vessels also often sail longer trips in the Caribbean that include less-visited southerly islands. In both cases, the allure of the cruises has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience.

Vision Class ships are also sometimes based in secondary ports such as Baltimore or San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the size of the local cruise market might not warrant a larger vessel.

Except for rock climbing walls, the Vision Class ships have none of the signature Royal Caribbean deck-top attractions such as surfing and skydiving simulators. For the most part, their top decks are lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s. All have at least two pools and six whirlpools, except for Enchantment of the Seas, which has three pools and six whirlpools.

In addition to main restaurants and casual buffets, each ship has at least one (and often several) additional specialty restaurants. The line's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and Italian eatery Giovanni's Table are two of them. Rhapsody of the Seas has the biggest selection of dining; Enchantment of the Seas has the smallest. Three of the four vessels — all but Enchantment of the Seas — have an Izumi Asian restaurant.

Each of the ships varies slightly in size. Grandeur of the Seas is the smallest of the four vessels, measuring around 74,000 tons. Enchantment of the Seas is the biggest, measuring around 83,000 tons (it was, notably, lengthened by 73 feet in 2005).

royal quays cruise ship

These are my 4 favorite spots on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship

Royal Caribbean has been a massive innovator when it comes to pushing what a cruise ship can be.

Its newest ship, Icon of the Seas, has countless first-of-its-kind attractions.  When you board Icon, for example, you can't miss The Pearl, a stunning giant stairway covered by a pearl-like structure that leads from the Royal Promenade to the Pearl Cafe, a new take on the classic Promenade Cafe.

Related: Carnival follows Royal Caribbean in making a major cruise change

It's a visual marvel, but the best part isn't The Pearl itself. It's that the structure is weight-bearing, enabling the cruise line to offer floor-to-ceiling windows in the Pearl Cafe. This in turn makes that one of the best spots to have a cup of coffee, work, visit with friends or simply stare at the sea.

For now the Pearl is on only one Royal Caribbean ship, although it will likely be on Star of the Seas, the second Icon-Class ship, when it launches in 2025.

New features, of course, are amazing, and Central Park, an outdoor area on Icon and Oasis-Class ships, may be my favorite place on any ship. It's simply amazing to be outdoors in a park with quiet and stillness on a cruise ship holding 8,000 or so people.

And many features are on most, if not all, Royal Caribbean ships. There's something comforting to be able to enjoy them whether you're on the newest ships or one of the fleet's older members.

1. The Royal Caribbean English pub

Nearly every Royal Caribbean ship has a pub that uses a something & something naming structure. On Utopia of the Seas, for example, the English Pub will be called Bell & Barley while the one on Allure of the Seas is the Bow & Stern.

All the pubs, however, share a unique beverage menu — by the end of the cruise, the bartenders usually have my Buffalo Manhattan ready not long after I sit down — and an acoustic guitarist.

Nearly every guitarist I have ever seen play in a Royal Caribbean pub is quite talented with most mixing old favorites with more contemporary tunes. The best of them, like my friend Sam Ensuque, pictured above, create an atmosphere that feels like a true British pub where between sets and songs people talk to the people sitting near them, and friendships are built.

The pub, at its best, makes a huge cruise ship feel cozy as people sing along to "Sweet Caroline," "Wagon Wheel," and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" over a pint, a cocktail, or even just a glass of water.

2. The Solarium

Every Royal Caribbean ship has a Solarium, an adults-only area that in most cases offers a pool, hot tubs, lounge chairs and a bar. Because it's 18-plus, the Solarium, which is a covered indoor/outdoor space at the front of each ship, offers a pool experience that's a bit quieter.

There are no bands, contests or movies in the Solarium and while getting a chair can be hard, there's usually plenty of space in the pool and the bar is usually not as crowded as the regular pool bars.

It's also much easier to talk to your fellow passengers in the Solarium pool or hot tubs as the overall noise level is much lower than the one in the all-ages pool area.

3. Playmakers sports bar

The oldest ships in the fleet, and Allure of the Seas, an Oasis-Class ship that will be updated later this year, don't have Playmakers, but the sports bar is on many of Royal Caribbean's ships. The location varies, but the venue is always a large sports bar with a beer-heavy drink menu along with bar food like buffalo wings, nachos and a much-loved "Campfire Cookie."

My favorite time to visit Playmakers is when there's a playoff game or some other sporting event that makes it a destination.

On Navigator of the Seas, where the Playmakers is on the Royal Promenade, or on an Oasis-Class ship (except Allure) where it's located on the Boardwalk, the entire surrounding area gets filled with people watching the game, rooting for their team, and politely jeering their rivals.

It's a wonderful communal experience that brings great energy to the ship.

4. Casino Royale

Don't gamble on a cruise if you're not a gambler on land.

Many people hear that you can earn free cruises or even get unexpected free cruise offers just for playing a little in Royal Caribbean's onboard casino. You can, but free is relative as the cruise line is not going to regularly lose money to give out free cruises.

If you like to gamble, however, Casino Royale offers a room full of like-minded people, Yes, it's fun to play slots, video poker and table games, but it's also a good time to sit at the casino bar to watch a game or chat with fellow gamblers.

Some of the best bartenders in the fleet seem to work at the Casino Royale bar, and many will make you something special if you share the flavors you like with them.

And late at night, when the rest of the ship has gotten quiet, the casino remains open (often past 2 a.m.).

Aida Diva: A baltic cruise onboard a truly german ship

When it comes to naming a typical German cruise operator, most people refer to Aida Cruises . With 12 ships carrying between 1,200 and 5,400 passengers each, the Rostock-based company, part of the American Carnival Corporation, indeed boasts a large and diverse fleet.

But what is it like to cruise with Aida ? Cruising Journal embarked on the AIDADIVA  for a 7-day Baltic cruise .

Aida Diva

As so many of Aida ’s summer cruises, the one I’m about to embark starts in Warnemünde , the picturesque coast-side outpost of Rostock which is conveniently accessible by both road and rail. I’m onboard together with my grown-up son with whom I share an inside cabin (no. 4344) down on deck 4. The cabin is amazingly spacious and features shelves without doors which makes unpacking easy. Coloured in cheerful orange and yellow colours, the decoration is a welcome break from today’s abundance of “nordic“ grey, black and brown tones.

AIDADIVA was built in the mid-2000s when the latter trend was still a few years away and when the Aida Cruises ships were still known in Germany as “Clubschiffe“ (club vessels), imitating the popular style of Mediterranean beach club resorts.

All you can eat

Overlooking Rostock’s sea channel with its busy ferry traffic to Scandinavia, the two of us have our first lunch in the “ Weite Welt ” restaurant on deck 10, one of seven restaurants on board, three of which are large buffet outlets. In focussing on buffet options, Aida Cruises ever since its start in 1996 breaks away from most of its competitors, enabling its guests to dine in a more relaxed surrounding, but still offering a great variety of food.

Weite Welt restaurant

Weite Welt restaurant terrasse

At least this is my impression on that first day onboard. The selection of food options is large indeed, all of them are well seasoned, and unlike those strange months when strict anti-Covid rules applied, self-service has returned, salt and pepper are disposable at each table as is Aida ’s famous “cutlery carousel“. Furthermore, Aida includes all non-alcoholic drinks as well as beer and table wine in the ticket price, so it’s basically ‘all you can eat/drink’ with the ”German branch of Costa Cruises“ if that is what you’ re looking for with your cruise. This very policy also leads to the complete and welcome absence of waitresses and waiters trying to sell you beverage packages at every possible or impossible opportunity.

AIDA

Upon the departure of the AIDADIVA in the evening, nearly all of Warnemünde’s fleet of excursion vessels hover around our ship to see us off. One might think that this was the first or last time the ship would ever depart from the port, but it’s just the familiarity and fondness the people of Rostock and Warnemünde have developed for “their“ company in the 26 years that have passed since the first Aida ship (the recently sold AIDACARA ) started the Aida story off.

After reaching the open sea, we retreat to the “ Aida Bar “ and “ Aida Lounge “ on deck 10 forward. In that prime location onboard, one would expect a lot of passengers and, inevitably, noise, but on the contrary: Both spaces prove to be rather reclusive, allowing for a quiet drink and some chatter. The Aida Lounge with its pink sofas and splendid view forward even has a small library attached and quite astonishingly serves as some kind of card room where families and couples regularly play games. One cannot praise Aida high enough for not having turned this lounge into another posh bar where easy listening music foremost causes potential guests to turn away and look for a different spot to spend the evening hours undisturbed.

For dinner no. 1 onboard the AIDADIVA , my son and I turn to the “ Bella Vista ” restaurant on deck 11. With no real “formal“ dinner option available (apart from the “ Buffalo Steakhouse “), there is no need to dress up for dinner, adding to a very easy-going onboard atmosphere. (However, long trousers are mandatory – a rule that is enforced at each respective restaurant’s entrance.) There are also no fixed seats, so you’re not only welcome, but outright required to occupy any free seat wherever one is available (which can be tricky for families travelling with two or more children).

Aida Diva BellaVista Restaurant

Aida Diva BellaVista Restaurant

But just like with lunch in the afternoon, I’m impressed. The quality of the buffet food is better than much of what is served in other companies’ vessels a la carte restaurants, and the portion size of course is just as you want it to be. The “ Bella Vista “ is loosely Mediterranean-themed, and although it’s all buffet-style, don’t expect fast food or crossover kitchen. All dishes are marked with a sign that explains its ingredients and country of origin, so you can basically go on a culinary “world cruise“ onboard – Aida changes its culinary motto not only from day to day, but also from restaurant to restaurant.

Back at my table, the wine is perfectly tempered and the waiters are on high alert to refill whenever your glass risks of running empty. Full marks on that first day of the cruise what the restaurants and service onboard concerns.

Pool disco and laser show

Up on the pool deck (deck 12), Aida celebrates embarkation day with the first (one of many a) open air party. Not that the pools themselves or the weather would encourage passengers to swim or bath until well past 10 p.m. But after more than two years full of Covid-19 restrictions, renunciations and lockdowns, the summer of 2022 at last feels like the first in a post-pandemic era – and onboard the Aida ships it’s going to be celebrated accordingly.

AidaDiva Pool Deck

AidaDiva Pool Deck

The thing is you need to appreciate (or at least have come to tolerate) what is called “Techno Schlager“, heavily computerized versions of German-language hits that remain mostly (and justifiably) unknown outside of German “Dorfdiskos“ (village discotheques). These songs are not even everyone’s taste on dry land, but seem to suit Aida ’s main clientele perfectly. The pool deck party , which comes along with a laser show, feels like an explosion of senses that transcends all boundaries – be it generation, origin or other. And to allow its guests to fully enjoy the party onboard, the following day, in the best cruise tradition, is a full day at sea.

AidaDiva Pool Deck

Lounges and Bars

The best way to start such a day is to sleep long (until 8 a.m. in my case) and have a leisurely (which means extensive) breakfast. In typical German fashion, freshly baked rolls are available and unlike other ships you don’t have to search for butter or margarine at the opposite end of the restaurant, but find it just next to where it logically belongs. The same also goes for others items of the buffets, so the ways are conveniently short. Aida also offers a full tea bar that leaves no flavour to be desired and fresh juices as well.

During the fore- and afternoon, my son and I explore the AIDADIVA and what she has to offer. One of Aida ’s trademarks is the “ Theatrium “, a combination of theatre and atrium where during the day rehearsals take place for what in the evening hours turns into a show or performance. Which means that there’s always something going on there, only the “wow“ factor varies, depending on the time of day you stroll by.

Theatrium AidaDiva

Theatrium AidaDiva

A somewhat peculiar invention on Aida ’s seven-strong “Sphinx” class (of which AIDADIVA is the lead vessel) is the “ Wellness Oase “, the ship’s large spa area situated forward on deck 12 and 14. (There is no deck 13 onboard.) In order to gain access to it, you need to book a form of treatment, otherwise you can only get a glimpse of the area through windows from the outside decks. Judging from the relatively few people spending time there, the whole area appears to be a giant waste of space which on the subsequent “Hyperion“ class ( AIDAPRIMA and AIDAPERLA ) has turned into a much better utilized indoor pool area called “ Beach club “.

Aida Diva Wellness Oase

Aida Diva Wellness Oase

Aida Diva Wellness Oase

The public rooms onboard the AIDADIVA spread over three decks (9, 10 and 11) with all three accommodating a buffet restaurant aft and converging in the middle of the ship into a level of the vessel’s Theatrium . Orientation therefore is simple although the walkways are different on all three decks. On deck 11 for instance, the “ Pizzeria Mare “ connects the Bella Vista restaurant aft with the central pool deck, but the pizzeria basically being a restaurant too, one is never sure if it’s okay to use it as a mere passage or not.

Aida Diva PizzeriaMare

Aida Diva PizzeriaMare

Things are different with the “ Almhütte “, a Bavarian/Alp-themed restaurant on deck 10 which due to its popularity on other Aida vessels has been incorporated on the older ship as recently as in spring 2022. The venue is very spacious and can be converted into a sports bar when necessary. Nevertheless, it is kind of a “hybrid“ restaurant where the meals are included, but the drinks are not and where your orders are taken at the tables (which actually are wooden benches) although the meals themselves are prepared only a few metres away behind a glass counter.

Almhutte AidaDiva

Almhutte AidaDiva

While the AIDADIVA sails at modest speed towards Stockholm, her passengers are spoilt with splendid summer sunshine outside. And although by no means comparable to the liners of old, the 2007-built ship offers a fair amount of open deck spaces on which to enjoy passages in nicer weather.

Her main sun deck is situated amidships on deck 11 and 12 with the two connected with one another via pyramid stairs. And while deck 11 features a stage for animation, dancing and film screenings, deck 12 has two rows of deckchairs arranged in a half circle around the central skylight dome that illuminates the Theatrium beneath it. There are three albeit small pools spread over these two decks, but the most clever solution probably is a neat little water ditch that runs around the skylight dome – ideal for little toddlers or to just cool off your feet for a moment when you’re not in the mood to frequent the pools themselves.

The outside decks

Passengers on the outside decks have the choice between the Pool Bar (deck 12) and Beach Bar (deck 11) to retreat for a drink, but can also turn aft where the Anytime Bar and Ocean Bar are situated on deck 12. Both the Weite Welt restaurant on deck 10 and the Bella Vista restaurant on deck 11 have an outdoor terrace as well if you seek a quieter place. These terrace-shaped decks at the stern are usually less frequented, and when it gets chilly there are even blankets available in the Anytime Bar to enjoy some fresh sea air without being cold.

AidaDiva PoolBar

But inside as well, Aida provides sofas and comfortable chairs in hidden corners where you normally wouldn’t expect any. Not only is no space wasted that way, but it seems that some clever thought has been given to those passengers who prefer a quiet minute to the hustle and bustle one would normally associate with mass-market cruise operators like Aida .

During a lovely summer’s day like this, the AIDADIVA ’s crew also makes multiple use of the ship’s sun and pool decks. In the afternoon, a “ Poolgarten “ event is hosted on the pool deck stage – a combination of open-air interviews with some of the ship’s senior officers and live music acts in between. And after sunset, a TV film is shown “ under the stars “, again with pool towels and blankets being distributed for the passengers to enjoy the film until its end in the chilly midnight hour. But here again – you need to understand German. All interviews are held in German language only as is the film shown. During the cruise, I hear some Dutch voices here and there but apart from that, AIDADIVA is more or less completely in German hands. Passenger-wise, that is, of course.

Pizza and barbecue

Stockholm greets us with an overcast sky the next morning. Nevertheless, the first passengers are up on deck and in the Aida Lounge at 6 a.m. to watch the scenic passage through the archipelago. Nevertheless, the captain’s public announcement upon arrival at first highlights the free WiFi network in the Swedish capital. An interesting detail hinting at how important it has become for passengers to post images and memories of their cruise experience on social media – and for cruise operators to benefit from that means of (free) publicity.

AidaDiva in Stockholm

AidaDiva in Stockholm

After twelve hours of sightseeing mainly on Stockholm ’s water taxis and archipelago ferries, my son and I opt for the AIDADIVA’s pizzeria upon our return onboard. The concept is well thought – by having passengers order their pizza seated, the venue averts the impression of a mere fast food station. On the other hand, the pizza just as the meals elsewhere onboard is free of charge (only drinks are charged) – a clear difference to Aida ’s sister company Costa Crociere where Italy’s national food is only available at a premium.

However, the service even with the pizzeria being only half-full is slow and if the result was really the “Best Pizza at Sea“ (as promoted by Aida ), may be questioned. However, Aida Cruises like so many operators in 2022 suffers from a shortage of service staff, a result of Covid-19-related disruptions in work and travel patterns. For the same reason, the AIDADIVA ’s only real a la carte restaurant “ Rossini “ remains closed for the whole duration of the cruise.

AidaDiva Vinothek

AidaDiva Vinothek

AIDADIVA remains in Stockholm overnight , giving her passengers the rare chance to experience the city until late in the evening and/or for another (half) day the next morning. We grasp the latter opportunity and return back to the ship in time to head straight to that unique spot forward above the bridge on deck 14 which gives an unobstructed view ahead on the ship’s course through the archipelago.

Meanwhile on the sun deck, Aida serves a barbeque by the pool, musically accompanied by the songs of Genesis and Pur, the latter again a band known to German guests only. Apart from that, the daily program comes along refreshingly short – a sign indicating that Aida passengers on a destination-intensive Baltic cruise as the one we’ve booked are well able to entertain and to care for themselves.

Aida Diva indoor

Aida Diva indoor

To underline this, an amazing lot of them gather along the ship’s railings as long as AIDADIVA sails through the Stockholm archipelago. The passenger load on this cruise is a bit above 2,000, so the ship is more or less fully booked. Her overall capacity at full occupancy is for 2,500, though, taking in account families travelling with children in 3rd and 4th (upper) berths. The latter by the way are especially cared for when it comes to dining: Aida opens the buffet restaurants for families with children at 5:30 p.m. – half an hour prior to the official entry time for the “regular” passengers. Even if there are amazingly few children or teenagers onboard who stand out by loud or wild behaviour, this is a clever move to separate from one another groups of passengers seeking different ways to dine in, necessarily, the same restaurant. One wonders why other mass-market cruise operators haven’t had (or followed) the same policy, too.

Football and beer

The next stop on our Baltic cruise is Visby , the capital of the Swedish island of Gotland and world-famous for its medieval architecture or what remains of it. We share the berth with TUI Cruises’ MEIN SCHIFF 6 , and although this means more than 4,000 cruise tourists ashore at once, the picturesque UNESCO world heritage town rarely feels overcrowded. Aida ’s competitor even pays an acoustic farewell salute upon our departure which is again being watched by hundreds of passengers along the railings and on the outside decks.

Aida Diva in Visby

Aida Diva in Visby

During dinner in the Markt Restaurant on deck 9, the last of AIDADIVA ’s three main buffet restaurants, the pattern remains the same as in the two other venues: The choice of meals is wide, and if you don’t stop the waiters from refilling your glasses of beer and wine, you risk being drunk within 30 minutes. My son and I therefore don’t stay longer than necessary and have our “real” dinner in the Almhütte , also to secure a table with a view of the TV screen on the wall.

AidaDiva Markt Restaurant

AidaDiva Markt Restaurant

The burger menu called “ Gletscherschmelze ” (glacial melt) is nothing but brilliant as is the dessert: flaming apple pie with raisins, vanilla ice and a shot of rum. But the main reason to show up in the Almhütte tonight is Aida ’s announcement to live-screen the women’s European football championship semi-finale Germany vs. France which today draws a lot more than the usual crowd seen in this restaurant. During the match, the Almhütte’s service team enjoys a steady stream of beer orders which includes the famous “Maß”, Bavaria’s one-litre jug prominently (but not solely) served during Munich’s Oktoberfest season.

Almhutte AidaDiva football

Almhutte AidaDiva football

When seeing that the Almhütte gets overcrowded due to high demand during the second half of the match, the latter is also being screened in the Theatrium once the evening show there has ended – a stark contrast again to other operators that stick to their daily routines irrespective of obvious customers demands.

With Germany winning the match in extra time, the AIDADIVA more than anyhow sails into the night as a cruise ship full of happy (German) passengers. Only the singers, dancers and animators had a very calm workday today, all sun deck or other parties and activities onboard being overshadowed by the high demand for what many think Germans like most – football and beer.

German music

AIDADIVA continues her course south along the Swedish Baltic coast during the night to call at Karlskrona the next morning, a port purpose-built in the late 17th century to accommodate Sweden’s navy fleet. Being too large to dock at the city’s historic quays, our vessel anchors in the bay instead and tenders her passengers ashore in her own lifeboats.

Karlskrona is rich both in terms of maritime history and picturesque old-town streets and buildings, so the day ashore passes quickly. And the sun continues to shine too which means that on departure by 5 p.m. the open decks are all but deserted. And although there is no classic division between a first and second restaurant seating onboard, all performances in the vessel’s Theatrium are shown twice each night. This is in order to accommodate as many passengers as possible since not all 2,000 fit into the rows of banks between deck 9 and 11 at once, no matter how close people sit next to one another.

Aida Diva Theatrium

Aida Diva Theatrium

For tonight’s show “ Rock – the Concert ”, all three levels of the Theatrium are fully packed. The show is great and, to many a guest, could well last longer than 45 minutes. In fact, all shows we have seen so far have been highly entertaining. The only downfall is that in summertime, many shows take place with daylight shining into the Theatrium since neither the side windows of the ship nor the vessel’s sky dome can be darkened. And again, “Rock” means a song mix that includes concessions to Aida’s core German clientele – “Tage wie dieser” by the Toten Hosen, “Winds of Change” by the Scorpions and, most bizarrely, “Hey, wir woll’n die Eisbärn sehn” by the Puhdys. But these are songs everyone can connect with, singing along the choruses happily.

Aida Diva Theatrium show

Aida Diva Theatrium show

Even the voice of cruise director Malte after five days into the cruise sounds alarmingly hoarse. Nevertheless, the cruise director shows up on the pool deck again at 11 p.m. when another laser show starts tonight’s disco under the stars. The laser show is called “ Achterbahn ”, and is, inevitably, shown to the song of the same name by the German singer Helene Fischer. Techno versions of songs by Wolfgang Petry, Pur and other German “Schlager” stars follow which for me at least is a sign to finish the day as far away as possible from that – with a book in the deserted and dimly lit Aida Lounge .

Copenhagen and back to Warnemünde

After three Swedish ports in a row, it’s the Danish capital Copenhagen for the last day of the cruise before AIDADIVA returns to Warnemünde tomorrow. Our ship docks behind the SILVER MOON at the city’s long Langelinie quay which lays in convenient proximity to the “Little Mermaid” and “Nyhavn”, two of Copenhagen’s most-visited attractions. Another day ashore passes all too quickly when at 6 p.m. the gangway which is aptly greeting returning passengers with the slogan “Willkommen zuhause” (“Welcome home”) is hauled inboards for the last time.

In keeping in line with another maritime tradition, the last evening onboard gives the crew the chance to show off their talents, be it by dancing, singing or other. On the Aida ships, this is called “ Crew meets band ” and although some talents are more pronounced than others, every crew member gets a big round of applause before the cruise director introduces the senior officers, department heads and crew members not on duty to the passengers assembled for that occasion on the pool deck once more.

AidaDiva Beach Bar

AidaDiva Beach Bar

After some more German pop music and a last laser show, the farewell party starts off to the sound of a number of hard rock classics which to some is a welcome break from the “Volksmusik” (traditional German folk music) playing continuously in the Almhütte restaurant and the “Schlager” hits heard on too many occasions elsewhere onboard.

AidaDiva laser show

AidaDiva laser show

After a full week onboard, we leave the AIDADIVA positively surprised and quite impressed. Although the Aida ships lack the splendour of main dining rooms with fixed sittings and passengers dining in classic evening attire, the meals in the ship’s three buffet restaurants have been fantastic both in terms of diversity and quality. The service onboard has been most attentive and the vessel’s 2,000 passengers were a well-behaved mix of families with children/teenagers and couples in their 40s and 50s.

And despite being smaller than the AIDAPRIMA and AIDANOVA and their sisters, there is plenty to see and do onboard during a 7-day cruise, whether you’re seeking party and animation or a quiet corner to read a book or play games with your travelling companions. The AIDADIVA is a ship in her best years and is decorated in cheerful orange, red, yellow and green colours – be it in the cabins, the bars or her public lounges. The 2007-built vessel is a colourful ship in the best sense.

Aida Cruises

After more than 25 years in the business, Aida Cruises does a lot of things right and caters perfectly to the needs and demands of its German-speaking core clientele. But it does so only to the latter. Without speaking or understanding German or admiring some German peculiarities (the nudist deck or silent parties, being only two), it may be hard to enjoy this particular product. Alas, in 2019 Aida Cruises alone carried 1,3 million passengers on its ships, a number which impressively proves that Aida knows exactly what “ Cruising German style ” should be like.

Royal Caribbean, Carnival will cruise out of Baltimore for first time since Key Bridge collapse. Here's when.

By Adam Thompson

Updated on: May 17, 2024 / 7:56 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE - Royal Caribbean and Carnival are getting ready to set sail out of the Port of Baltimore as the first cruise departures from the port since the March 26 Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

The Port of Baltimore announced that the Vision of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean, will embark on a five-night voyage on May 25 from Baltimore to Bermuda.

The Carnival Legend will depart out of Baltimore on May 26.

"Baltimore is back," the Port of Baltimore posted on social media.

"We are extremely grateful to the officials and incredible first responders in Baltimore, who've shown great leadership and resolve in this difficult time, as well as our supportive partners in Norfolk, whose rapid response allowed us to continue to deliver our scheduled sailings for our guests," said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. "It's been our goal to resume operations in Baltimore as soon as possible, and after working closely with local, state and federal agencies, we look forward to a successful return."

The cargo ship Dali crashed into Baltimore's bridge in late March, killing six construction workers, halting access to and from the Port of Baltimore and knocking down the entire bridge.

The Port of Baltimore services cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian.

A Carnival spokesperson told CBS News the company expects a less than $10 million impact on both adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization as well as its adjusted net income for the full year 2024.

In April, a Carnival cruise ship was expected to return to Baltimore, but after the Key Bridge collapse, it ported in Norfolk, Virginia.

Regina Ali, a spokesperson for AAA, was on that Carnival ship when the cargo ship caused the bridge collapse.

"I'm looking and I'm like, 'Wait a minute, this is in Maryland and it was so surreal,'" Ali said.

Since then, cruise ships originally slated for Baltimore took off and  returned in Norfolk.

Fun on cruise ships: royal caribbean presents a train-inspired restaurant, ‘we want you to believe that you are on a train’.

Trent Kelly , Reporter

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Royal Caribbean presented The Royal Railway, a restaurant concept inspired by the turn-of-the-century rail journeys.

The two 24-seat train cars will be on board the Utopia of the Seas, the sixth ship of the Oasis Class set to start service in July out of Port Canaveral.

“We want you to believe that you are on a train,” said Jay Schneider, Royal Caribbean’s chief product innovation officer.

To enhance the illusion, the interior has LED screens dressed by window frames and a team of actors will play their roles. The chef’s menu will match the destinations.

The experiences may vary from the family-friendly Old Wild West adventure, a romantic Silk Road journey through Asia, hot chocolate time at the North Pole, and wine tastings in Napa Valley.
