The best train rides in the USA for seriously gorgeous views

From coastal routes to journeys through the mountains, these train rides spotlight all of America's most stunning scenery.

Clara Hogan

From redwood groves to sprawling desert landscapes to miles of picturesque countryside, America has no shortage of stunning scenery across its 50 states. One of the best ways to take in all the beauty is by hopping aboard a train.

While a road trip through America is always a great choice to see the country's sights, we'd argue train travel is even better. Not only is riding  on a train a timeless experience with notes of romance and nostalgia, but there's no airport stress or need to be at attention behind the wheel. Instead,  you can sit back, relax and simply stare out the window as you take it all in.

Below, you'll find the best and most scenic train rides across the country. On the West Coast, take in ocean views aboard the Coast Starlight (from Los Angeles to Seattle ) or the Surfliner, which hugs the California coast for miles. On the East Coast, the Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you through the Mount Washington area in New Hampshire. Looking for something even more adventurous? Head to Alaska  to catch the Denali Star’s 350-mile trek from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

Whether you're looking for a multi-day adventure or a route that only lasts a few hours, these train rides won't disappoint.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Best train rides in the USA

1.  rockies to the red rocks.

Rockies to the Red Rocks

Denver, CO to Moab, UT

Trip length: Two days

The first U.S. offering from luxury Canadian company Rocky Mountaineer, the ' Rockies to the Red Rocks ' trip takes passengers on a two-day ride from Denver to Moab—passing through stunning Rocky Mountains and southwest scenery along the way. Best of all? Passengers will witness all that gorgeous nature from the train's glass-dome top! That's right, we're talking about unobstructed views of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the USA . The 2024 season runs from April 14 through October 9.

2.  Coast Starlight

Coast Starlight

Los Angeles, CA to Seattle, WA

Trip length: 36 hours

Traveling by train instead puts a spin on the classic left-coast road trip. The advantages? There are zero wrong-turn fights and way more photo ops. The 1,377-mile Coast Starlight route hits the best of the West: Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and more. On the 36-hour trip, bounce from your seat to the dining car and the 'sightseer lounge car,' where all the seats face the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows.

3.  Pacific Surfliner

Pacific Surfliner

San Diego, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA

Trip length: 8-9 hours

If you're looking for a train ride with ocean views, you can't beat Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner , which travels along a 351-mile route, many of the trip is directly along the California coast. The route starts out in San Diego before meandering up through Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other stops before ending in San Luis Obispo in the central part of the state.

4.  The Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon Railway

Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon, AZ

Trip length: 2 hours 15 minutes

Sure, you may have been to the Grand Canyon already, but have you ever admired Grand Canyon country by train? On The Grand Canyon Railway , you’ll depart from Williams, Arizona, and roll through pine forests and prairies, spotting pronghorn and bald eagles, before arriving two hours and 15 minutes later at the epic South Rim. All of the historic cars of the Grand Canyon Railway have fascinating former lives and some have glass-dome ceilings for unstoppable panoramas.

5.  The Empire Builder

The Empire Builder

Chicago, IL to Portland, OR

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight.

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

The Alaska Denali Star

Anchorage, AK to Fairbanks, AK

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild.

7.  Skunk Train

Skunk Train

Willits, CA

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Bryson City, NC

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Bretton Woods, NH

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day.

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa Valley, CA

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

11.  California Zephyr

California Zephyr

Emeryville, CA to Reno, NV

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train.

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, CO to Silverton, CO

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

The Ethan Allen Express

New York City, NY to Burlington, VT

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

The Most Beautiful Winter Train Rides in North America

Experience winter landscapes in a brand new way.

road trip train scene

When traveling long distances across North America, the scenic route is always worth taking, especially in the winter when those wild and majestic landscapes get covered in a fresh blanket of snow. And while wintry conditions rarely favor drivers, train riders get to enjoy the frosty scenery without any of the stress of icy roads.

A winter train ride in North America can sometimes feel like riding in a snow globe, as you get to watch lakes, mountains, rivers, and forests rush by while sitting warm and cozy in your railcar. Whether you choose an Amtrak route from the Midwest to the Grand Canyon , a ski train between downtown Denver and the slopes, or a California wine train that embraces the holiday spirit, trains and winter fun go together like hot chocolate and marshmallows. Here are some of the best winter train rides in North America, where you can truly appreciate the diverse natural beauty of the continent.

Aurora Winter Train: Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Alaska Railroad can get you from Anchorage to Fairbanks in about 12 hours — providing spectacular views of the Alaskan wilderness along the way. From pristine lakes and snow-capped mountains to wildlife like moose, caribou, and bears, the route immerses you in the natural beauty of the country's largest state. This includes an up close and personal view of Denali, the highest peak in North America.

Between December and January, you can only make this trip on Saturdays, but starting in mid-February until April there are two to three departures a week from Anchorage.

Empire Builder: Chicago to Portland, Oregon

This 46-hour Amtrak route runs every day of the year, allowing wintertime riders to see the splendor of the American West under a blanket of snow. Starting in Chicago and finishing in Seattle, via Minneapolis/St. Paul, Spokane, and Portland, the Empire Builder route passes through the majesty of Glacier National Park dressed in its winter best. Other highlights include views of Seattle's Columbia River Gorge and the snowcapped peaks of Washington's Beacon Rock and Oregon's Mount Hood.

Cascade Canyon Winter Train: Durango, Colorado

Cascade Canyon in San Juan National Forest is a popular hiking trail in the summer, but in the winter, you can also enjoy the natural beauty of the area without having to get off the train. Starting in Durango, the Cascade Canyon Winter Train takes you 26 miles around the edge of the gorge during the 5.25-hour round trip. The canyon itself was once mined for silver and gold and although the resource dried up years ago, there are still plenty of precious photo ops to be had when there's snow on the ground. The train runs on select dates from November to May.

Seattle and Canadian Rockies Winter Discovery: Seattle to Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

Amtrak's Seattle and the Canadian Rockies Discovery trip begins in Washington and takes you over the border on a nine-day Canadian adventure. With stops in Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, and Calgary, you’re sure to see all the best views the Canadian Rockies have to offer. The itinerary also includes a ski gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain for epic vistas of the snow-covered peaks, and a winter wildlife tour in Jasper National Park.

Colorado Ski Train: Denver to Winter Park, Colorado

The Winter Park Express is an Amtrak train that delivers you from Denver Union Station to the doorstep of the Winter Park Resort. The ski train only runs from Friday to Sunday between January and March, so it's up to you if you want to stay for just the weekend or a whole week. Tickets go on sale in December and tend to sell out fast, so get them early if you can. If you're flying into Denver, you can take public transportation to Union Station and hop on right from there — no cab or rental car necessary. Try to snag a seat in the sightseer lounge so you can enjoy the best views as the train climbs up into the mountains and passes through impressively constructed tunnels to get you to your destination.

Napa Valley Wine Train: Napa, California

The Napa Valley Wine Train is one of the most glamorous ways to explore this famous California wine region. At any time of year, you can sip wine while watching the vineyards roll by outside the window. During the holidays however, you can buy a ticket for the Santa Train and instead of wine, enjoy a tasting of hot cocoa and freshly baked cookies, plus a visit from the red-suited man of the season. Or, upgrade your journey to include a three-course gourmet meal (with kid-friendly menus) in one of the luxury cars. The holiday-themed trips run between late November and December 23.

Winter Escape to the Grand Canyon: Chicago to Williams, Arizona

Vacation by Rail's Winter Escape to the Grand Canyon is a six-day round-trip journey that delivers you from the white-out winter scenery of the Great Lakes region and into the colorful Southwest. Leaving from Chicago , you’ll see plenty of snow-covered views before arriving in Flagstaff, where you can make the rest of the way to the Grand Canyon by transferring to the Grand Canyon Railway — a shuttle will connect you from Flagstaff to Williams, Arizona. After spending time exploring the natural wonder at your own pace, you can return to the Windy City the same way you came.

Coast Starlight Train: Seattle to Los Angeles

For a truly magical winter experience, don’t dismiss the beauty of the West Coast in winter. Get your ticket for the Coast Starlight , a 36-hour Amtrak route that runs year-round from Seattle to Los Angeles, making stops in Portland, Klamath Falls, San Luis Obispo, and Sacramento. The trip starts strong with dramatic Pacific Northwest scenery including forests, lakes, rivers, and the snow-capped Cascade mountains. Then, watch the snow melt away as you travel south through California to Los Angeles.

California Zephyr: Chicago to San Francisco

If you want to truly see the extent of America’s gorgeous and diverse scenery in wintertime, you can’t do better than Amtrak's California Zephyr . This roughly two-day winter train excursion takes you from Chicago to San Francisco, passing through the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, ensuring fantastic views all the way through. You can hop aboard any day of the year, but the Midwest's first snowfall typically happens in late November.

Adirondack Train: New York City to Montreal

Departing daily from New York City to Montreal, Amtrak's Adirondack train travels through New York State's expansive mountain range. Snow lovers can marvel at the icy peaks and white-dusted trees that cover the landscape. The trip takes about 10 hours, so it can be done in a day, or get off in Albany and check out the strikingly eclectic 1880s New York State Capitol building. You can also head to a nearby ski resort like Maple Ski Ridge , which is about a 30-minute drive from the city.

Ethan Allen Express Train: New York City to Burlington, Vermont

Alex Boudreaux/Getty Images

Vermont may be famous for its fall foliage, but come back in the winter and you're in for another beautiful spectacle. Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express goes from New York City to Burlington, Vermont, passing scenic winter views of the Hudson Valley and the Green Mountains. The trip takes about eight hours to complete, but you can break it up with stops to explore charming towns along the way, or maybe even find a cozy bed-and-breakfast with a wood-burning fireplace to spend the night on this leisurely journey north.

Winter in the Rockies: Vancouver to Banff, Alberta, Canada

Winter in the Rockies will take you from Vancouver to the real-life winter wonderland that is Banff, Alberta, cutting through both Jasper National Park and the iconic Lake Louise. Along the way, you'll have a front row seat to Canada's Rocky Mountain views and an opportunity to get out and explore the wintry landscapes. With this vacation package, you can disembark to ice skate on Lac Beauvert or take a horse-drawn sleigh ride across the frozen landscape. Once you arrive in Banff , hit the ski slopes or go for a well-deserved soak in the natural hot springs.

4 great scenic train rides across the US

Bill Fink

Want to truly immerse yourself in the vastness of the USA? There's no better way than to take a scenic cross-country train trip.

During these long-distance train rides, the journey is just as exciting as the destination itself. Relaxing in your seat as you watch the U.S. landscape out your train car window slowly change from cities to farmlands or from wide-open plains to towering mountains is an experience that's worth the extra transit time.

Amtrak offers many overnight and multiday scenic train rides across the U.S. from the East Coast, the West Coast and everywhere in between. Route names like the Empire Builder, the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr are enough to inspire wanderlust for any traveler.

Whether you're new to train travel or an avid rider of the rails, here are four bucket list-worthy U.S. train rides to take for stunning scenery, plus some tips on how best to book and enjoy them.

Tips for cross-country train travel

road trip train scene

While taking a cross-country train trip can be a rewarding experience, as it offers days to leisurely sit back and enjoy scenic landscapes, many people have worries about how best to book such a long trip and what to expect when it comes to sleeping arrangements. TPG has a few tips to help you get on board with the concept and easily plan your journey.

Browse routes by region

road trip train scene

A good first step to take when looking for a route that's right for you is to search Amtrak's "Browse by Region" menu. You can pick a large area of the country from which to start or finish your trip.

Once you click on an area, Amtrak will provide lists of highlighted long-distance routes, as well as shorter point-to-point trips. You can then select a route like the Capitol Corridor in California before being directed to ticket purchase menus.

Explore Amtrak Vacations

road trip train scene

Amtrak offers curated vacation packages to rail travelers via its Amtrak Vacations website. These tours can include side trips (via bus) to national parks , sightseeing tours in cities and hotel lodging on stopovers along the route. You can search for packages around vacation themes like "Fall Foliage" and "Multiple National Parks."

Amtrak's set of "Most Scenic Journeys" vacation packages include trips lasting up to two weeks that combine rail travel and additional tours. Think of these trips like cruises with shore excursions . Some of the scenic journey-designated options focus on national parks, while others are big-city oriented.

You can click on each option's details to find itineraries, dates and prices. Then, all that's left to do is book your rail vacation.

Consider famous routes

road trip train scene

A shortcut to finding scenic cross-country rail routes on Amtrak is to visit its Amtrak Vacations website and click on "Famous Rail Routes." This set of approximately 20 different overnight train routes gives you a great set of suggestions for your own potential cross-country journeys.

For more details on the fixed routes, click on any of the tabs. Once you've chosen a route, you can either book a package tour with Amtrak Vacations or go to the regular Amtrak website and book a point-to-point trip.

Weigh your accommodation options

Taking an overnight or a multiday train trip means you'll need to sleep aboard the train. All of Amtrak's long-distance train trips provide a variety of seating and room arrangments.

The cheapest way to travel is to simply book a seat on the route. While Amtrak's seating is comfortable, with more legroom than you'll find in an airline's business class, it may not be the way you want to travel for many hours. You can get up, walk the train and stop in the cafe car, but this can still be a tough way to travel during a multiday journey.

Fortunately, Amtrak provides several classes of accommodations on cross-country trips, ranging from shared roomettes with fold-out bunks to bedrooms, larger family bedrooms and suites complete with private bathrooms and showers. Should you book one of these rooms on a cross-country itinerary, you'll enjoy access to a separate dining car.

Prices for the various ticket classes vary widely between routes and dates, so check potential itineraries to find the best option for you.

4 scenic train trips to take in the US

Now that you know the basics when it comes to picking a long-distance train route, you'll want to narrow down your options. Although there are many scenic routes in the U.S., here are our four favorites.

California Zephyr: San Francisco to Chicago

road trip train scene

Amtrak's California Zephyr route travels between San Francisco and Chicago on a three-day journey. The 51-hour trip (on the west-to-east path) begins in nearby Emeryville, California, then travels through central California farmlands up into the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Along this part of the route, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramas from glassed-in viewing cars.

The train continues through Reno and the Nevada deserts into Salt Lake City before traveling up into the Rocky Mountains to reach Denver . You'll descend into the wide-open plains of Nebraska and eventually wind your way into the Windy City.

This trip is a great way to immerse yourself in the American West, as you'll get a true feeling of the vastness of the region and the variety of terrain that makes up the country.

One-way prices start at $141 per person for a seat in coach and $688 for a room.

Empire Builder: Seattle to Chicago

road trip train scene

The Empire Builder train route connects Chicago and Seattle on a 46-hour journey connecting the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. The train loosely follows the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, the route the explorers took to map out the region acquired during the Louisiana Purchase.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark would have appreciated sitting back in the train's viewing cars to enjoy eyefuls of Montana 's Big Sky Country, Glacier National Park , the Cascade Range and the vast plains of North Dakota. Additionally, the explorers would have marveled at the metalwork of North Dakota's towering Gassman Coulee Trestle bridge.

Should you wish to depart or arrive in Portland, Oregon, instead of Seattle, know that there's an alternate route of the Empire Builder from this Pacific Northwest city, so you can plan your itinerary based on your preferences.

One-way train fares from Chicago to Seattle begin at $150 per person, while rooms cost at least $651.

Southwest Chief: Los Angeles to Chicago

road trip train scene

Traverse the American Southwest on a southern route between Los Angeles and Chicago. The Southwest Chief route departs daily and takes roughly 40 hours to cross eight states.

For some of the journey, the train follows the classic American road trip thoroughfare of historic Route 66 . However, unlike its car-friendly neighbor, the train route offers views you won't find while driving the highway, as it winds on twisting tracks that travel through narrow red-rock canyon passages before offering wide-open vistas of mountains and deserts.

The train's main stops include Kansas City, Missouri; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Flagstaff, Arizona. You can also take advantage of excursions from the train when you purchase one of Amtrak's vacation packages. For example, you can visit the Grand Canyon (by train or bus) while the train is stopped in Williams, Arizona.

Even if you never leave the train, the views along the way are enough to create lasting memories.

Expect to pay at least $146 per person for a coach seat on this one-way route or a minimum of $899 for a room.

Crescent: New York City to New Orleans

road trip train scene

See the American South on this 30-hour journey between New York City and New Orleans . Departing the urban landscape of the Big Apple, this route will take you through the Northeastern cityscapes of Philadelphia , Baltimore and Washington, D.C. , among other destinations.

Once it exits the urban corridor, the train winds through the countryside of Virginia and the Carolinas, offering stops in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina. Then, it continues through the Deep South states of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi before reaching its final stop in New Orleans.

Tickets for this one-way route start at $139 for a seat in coach and $580 for a room.

Bottom line

Traveling by train across the U.S. gives you a unique perspective of the scale and scope of the American landscape. While it may be slower than flying across the country, rail travel gives you the opportunity to sit back and savor the journey, appreciating the changing views as the hours roll by.

The four scenic cross-country train trips highlighted here are only some of Amtrak's many long-distance journeys available to book. By exploring Amtrak's website, you can find many different rail journeys in nearly every part of the U.S. Best of all, most offer an array of seating options, so you can choose the ticket that best suits your travel preferences and budget.

For those looking to get even more in touch with nature, the company also offer the Tarzan Train package , a combination railway trip and zipline canopy tour.

Amtrak Empire Builder

2,206 miles and the Great Plains await passengers on Amtrak’s Empire Builder , a 46-hour ride stretching between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, ending in Seattle. Amtrak Sunset Limited

Other sights include Arizona’s Saguaro National Park, the historic Wild West town of Yuma, California’s desolate Salton Sea, and the windmills of the Coachella Valley, before running parallel to the mountains surrounding the City of Angels. Stops between NOLA and L.A. include San Antonio, El Paso, Tuscon, Phoenix, and Palm Springs.

White Pass and Yukon Route Railway

Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, Alaska’s White Pass and Yukon Route Railway offers travelers a 40-mile, two-and-a-half hour round trip journey from Skagway Alaska to the Summit of the White Pass. Considered a marvel of engineering and an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, the railway travels up to an elevation of 2,885 feet in just 20 miles, navigating two tunnels and passing such breathtaking sights as waterfalls, dizzying cliff drops, and towering trestles. From vintage train cars traveling the vertiginous route, passengers will see Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point and Dead Horse Gulch, as well as the original Klondike Trail of ’98, which is etched into the rocks. Riders get a sense of what it must have been like for gold rushers searching for their own gilded piece of the American Dream.

Amtrak California Zephyr

Since its inaugural run in 1949, the Amtrak California Zephyr has ferried passengers across the Continental Divide on a 51-hour journey through the heart of America, beginning in Chicago and ending just outside San Francisco Bay in Emeryville, California. The route includes a trip through the Rocky Mountains outside Denver, passing through the Sierra Nevadas, along the Colorado River, and up close views of Utah’s majestic red rocks before eventually steaming past Reno and into San Francisco Bay with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. To accommodate the exceptionally long journey, the train includes a dining car, lounge/cafe car, and sleeping car, with bedroom suites than can accommodate up to six .

Amtrak Southwest Chief

A 40+ hour ride from Chicago to Los Angeles, Amtrak’s Southwest Chief is an ideal way to experience the majesty and sprawl of the American West—a journey that practically takes you back in time. Spanning eight states and crossing the Mississippi River, the train allows passengers to take in vistas not visible from the highway, including stretches of wheat fields, adobe pueblos, jutting mountain peaks and great swaths of desert. Major cities along the way include Chicago, Kansas City, and Albuquerque—with stops at many smaller towns along the famed Route 66, including Flagstaff, Kingman, Barstow, and San Bernardino—ending at historic Union Station in Los Angeles.

Cape Cod Central Railroad Coastal Excursion

Offering scenic two- and three-hour New England journeys from the Cape Cod, Massachusetts towns of Hyannis and West Barnstable, the Cape Cod Central Railroad’s Coastal excursion trains are an ideal way to see the windswept beauty of the Cape, passing through local terrain such as cranberry bogs, sand dunes, and salt marshes, with a one-hour stop at the Cape Cod Canal. Passengers can expect both an informative sightseeing tour and fine dining service while viewing hidden areas of Cape Cod only accessible by train. A Christmas train with elf-led sing-a-longs also runs during the holiday season.

Amtrak Capital Corridor

Transporting Bay Area residents to the Golden State’s capitol of Sacramento, this 168-mile train ride takes 3 hours and 15 minutes, going through the southwestern tip of San Francisco Bay—a protected wetland home to birds and wildlife—through the region's only ghost town Drawbridge , the rolling hills of Northern California, and finishing in the El Dorado foothills. Trains are comfortable, with wi-fi and a nice café car, and while commuters may rule, scenery junkies will love the views, too.

Amtrak Crescent

This 30-hour journey begins in New York City, cuts through Atlanta, and leaves passengers in New Orleans. It emphasizes southern scenery, with stops in towns like Charlottesville, where riders can experience Shenandoah National Park and the grand views, waterfalls, and hiking paths of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

Operational since 1880, this southwestern trip bills itself as "America's most historic scenic railroad." The diversity of flora and fauna is on display from the train, which glides past 600-foot gorges, snowy mountaintops, and plenty of wildlife. The route proceeds through the Cumbres Pass in the San Juan Mountains at more than 10,000 feet, making it the highest mountain pass reached by train in the entire country.

Cass Scenic Railroad

An 11-mile ride through Cass Scenic Railroad State Park features incredible greenery, and the trains used for the trip are the very ones that brought lumber to mining outposts centuries ago . The ride passes the Bald Knob summit, and peaks (literally) at Whittaker Station, which is a former logging camp. The 4 1/2-hour trip is offered Tuesday through Sunday, with special offerings throughout the year.

11 Amtrak routes with the most breathtaking views

The Pacific Surfliner travels along the coastline in Del Mar, California. The Pacific Surfliner offers a unique vantage on the Southern California seascape connecting San Luis Obispo and San Diego through Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

As someone who was raised on Amtrak and has taken dozens of their cross-country trips over the past 20+ years, I’m a big advocate of train travel. Aside from amazing scenery, you get to detox from your usual hustle-and-bustle life; in fact, you have no choice: the WiFi is often spotty at best. Once you decide to take a train trip, you definitely have some R&R to look forward to. Which means your biggest issue will be answering one question – which route should you take?

It all comes down to what types of landscapes you want to see. The vast rolling low country of the Gulf? The California coast? The Rockies further north? The rivers and lakes of Middle America? The dramatic greenery of the Pacific Northwest? The options are endless – and you can always do a partial journey instead of a full one or train-hop from one route to another.

It’s also recommended to take trips a few times a year during different seasons – the Colorado River looks a lot different with glistening snow around it versus colorful spring flowers or fall foliage. But, no matter what time of year you take an Amtrak trip, as you take in the scenery from your seat or the observation car – complete with floor-to-ceiling windows ideal for sightseeing – you’ll quickly see how the journey truly is the destination.

California Zepher

Start – Chicago; End – Emeryville (San Francisco) For a true cross-country train ride experience that goes right through the middle of America – from Chicago to San Francisco (via a bus from Emeryville) – the California Zephyr is the one. For almost 2,500 miles and a bit more than 51 hours, you’ll have a first-row seat to some of the nation’s best scenery. As farmlands transform to mountains before your very eyes, you’ll go through the Rockies , Glenwood Canyon and Moffat Tunnel as the train winds itself through the Continental Divide.

The postcard-perfect views will continue as the route soars through the High Sierra. Near the historic Donner Pass, the train will reach its highest point, approximately 7000ft above sea level, and you’ll see Donner Lake below, a freshwater lake within the California state line. You may also see various wildlife, like bald eagles flying overhead as the train continues on to the Pacific.

Las Vegas, New Mexico, United States. Train ride on the Amtrak Southwest Super Chief

Southwest Chief

Start – Chicago; End – Los Angeles Now’s your time to see the American West up-close-and-personal as you ride through it on the Southwest Chief. Unlike the fairly horizontal route of the California Zephyr, the Southwest Chief does more of a diagonal as it passes plains, rivers, mountains and deserts. Be sure to keep an eye on the scenery as it changes from Midwestern prairies to snow-capped Colorado mountains to sun-baked pueblos to the Sedona Red Cliffs , taking routes and switchbacks only fit for a train.

Steins, New Mexico - The Amtrak Texas Eagle, eastbound from Los Angeles to Chicago, in western New Mexico.

Texas Eagle

Start – Chicago; End – Los Angeles If you cannot get enough of the train and want to take a longer route from Chicago to Los Angeles , the Texas Eagle fits the bill. Although 65 hours may sound long, with all the scenery competing for your attention, time will fly by and next thing you know, you'll arrive at your final destination. Along the way, you will see all types of topography, from the raging waters of the Mississippi River to the mountainous Ozarks. And in addition to seeing sprawling southern landscapes, you can also see how many historical towns and tiny train depots you can spot – a hint at how the west was won by rail. If you want to cut your journey in half, you can always get off at a Texan stop that catches your eye and spend more time there. Chicago to San Antonio , for example, is about a 32-hour journey.

Coast Starlight

Start – Seattle; End – Los Angeles If you want to follow the length of the US west coast (well, minus San Diego),  the Coast Starlight will provide you with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean for almost 350 miles of California coastline as you head south to Los Angeles – or north to Seattle. In addition to watching waves of crystal-blue water, you can take in the rich, dripping forests and snowy peaks of the Pacific Northwest. Just past the California border, the train curves around the base of Mount Shasta, giving you panoramic views of one of the southernmost of the Cascades Range's stratovolcanoes.

From there, the landscape begins to change remarkably as you leave verdant, foggy NorCal behind for the golden hues of the state's farmland, wine country , and eventually SoCal's dusky, scrubb-strewn hills. The southern terminus is Los Angeles' handsome Arts and Crafts train station, all dark wood and generous leather club chairs, from which you can easily catch a bus elsewhere – including LAX – or pick up another train route.

If you were traveling north from LA to Seattle, however, you have a choice to make. Once the train reaches Eugene, Oregon, some north bound train-goers opt for the Amtrak Cascades route to continue even further north than Seattle and on to Vancouver, British Columbia (see more below).

IMG_20180701_135115.jpg

Amtrak Cascades

Start – Eugene; End – Vancouver, BC Whether you take the Amtrak Cascades train route as an extension of your trip up the West Coast from LA on the Coast Starlight or just take the former on its own, one thing’s for sure: nothing encompasses the Pacific Northwest more than this voyage. On this 10-hour, 25-minute journey from Eugene to Vancouver, British Columbia, the picturesque views you’ll get on this include everything from waterfalls to the high peaks of Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood. And don’t forget about the Columbia River Gorge and Puget Sound, too.

If you want even more train travel when you get to Vancouver, you can hop off Amtrak and step aboard the  Rocky Mountaineer , which has three different rail options through the Canadian Rockies .

Empire Builder AMTRAK passenger train rolls into Whitefish, Montana, USA

Empire Builder

Start – Chicago; End – Portland/Seattle For an ideal trip through the northern part of the United States – particularly if you’re a Lewis and Clark fan and want to retrace some of their steps – Empire Builder is your train. Starting from Chicago, you’ll then go north through Wisconsin and Minnesota before making your way across several states until reaching Portland or Seattle.

From the vast, yet striking, prairies of North Dakota to charming mountain towns, there’s always something to see. Plus, don’t forget about renowned sights like the mighty Mississippi, Montana ’s Big Sky country and Glacier National Park – there’s even a train stop in East Glacier . In Spokane , the train heads either to Portland or Seattle. Hint: if you take the Portland route, you’ll see the stunning Columbia River Gorge, which you won’t soon – if ever – forget.

LPT1016_067.jpg

Sunset Limited

Start – New Orleans; End – Los Angeles The Sunset Limited travels from New Orleans to Los Angeles and is Amtrak’s southernmost route. If looking out at breathtaking bayous, deserts and mountainous landscapes is your thing, you’ll love this ride. Other highlights include crossing the Rio Grande and seeing more cacti than you can count. Of course, it’s not called the Sunset Limited for nothing – you can catch epic shades of yellow, orange, and pink blending together into unforgettable sunsets with stunning backdrops.

amtrak train pacific surfliner between los angeles and san diego

Pacific Surfliner

Start – San Luis Obispo; End – San Diego The Pacific Surfliner goes from San Luis Obispo – complete with plenty of small-town charm and views of wine country – to San Diego , or vice-versa. Since it’s a coastal train route, you’ll see plenty of surf, as well as surfers – the train even has racks for both bikes and surfboards. At just under six hours, this is also the perfect route to take if you’re new to long-distance train travel and want to start small before committing to a full-on cross-country journey just yet. Plus, it makes for an easy weekend away if you live in or near one of the many cities it goes through, like Los Angeles, Solvang or Santa Barbara.

Trains on the railroad tracks at Wolf Point leading into Union Station, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Lake Shore Limited

Start – New York/Boston; End – Chicago You don't have to head to the coasts to have beautiful journey along silver shorelines – not when the Lake Shore Limited has got you covered. Hugging the lip of the Great Lakes  and other famous bodies of water, including the Mohawk River, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and the Finger Lakes region of New York, the aquatic scenery makes for a pretty and peaceful journey. And when you throw a colorful sunset into the mix, it makes the landscape that much more captivating as you roll from the first to second cities through what was once the frontier.

shutterstockRF_20802574.jpg

Start – New York, NY; End – Montreal, QC What better a way to go visit Montreal than hopping on the train in New York and heading up north to Canada. This 10-hour journey offers a perfect escape from big-city life while passing through tranquil areas like the Hudson Valley, Saratoga Springs and Adirondack Mountains . It’s a lovely trip to take any time of year, but especially during the fall foliage. You’ll also ride by some beautiful bodies of water, including Lake Champlain and Lake George. And if you take the route from Montreal to New York instead of vice-versa, there will be plenty of train connection options once you arrive, from Philadelphia to Washington, DC, and beyond.

Harpers Ferry. Amtrak Train 29, the Cap, the westbound Capitol Limited at Potomac railroad bridge, waiting to enter Harper's Ferry station.

Capitol Limited

Start – Washington, D.C.; End – Chicago Whether you start your journey in the Midwest or from the East Coast, this 18-hour train ride will take you through some key scenic places, including the Potomac Valley, Harpers Ferry and the Allegheny Mountains . You might capture a stunning sunset along the way, too. No matter which city you start in, you can continue your trip in one of the vibrant cities the train ends in. You can also bring along your bike, as the Capitol Limited allows for bike storage, and continue your travel adventure that way.

The Most Scenic Train Rides Across the US

The Most Scenic Train Rides Across the US

This past June, I took a nine-hour train ride from Santa Barbara to San Francisco on board the Amtrak Coast Starlight, considered one of the country’s most scenic rail routes. The views proved so absorbing that I never actually made it to my assigned seat—sitting instead in the communal observation car for the entirety of the ride.

From the car’s glass-dome windows, California’s rugged coastline and golden hills revealed themselves to me. America’s West Coast fluctuated between the breathtaking and the dire—from endless ocean and cliff-top mansions to drought-ridden fields and cottages sinking between collapsed roofs. Peering out at the vast spectrum of life unfold before me, I enjoyed that slightly detached “from above” perspective rail travel affords you; through the journey, I observed both heartwarming humanity (lone fishermen and packs of surfers, a young girl wearing a pink tutu playing in a creek, an old man collecting driftwood at a campsite) as well as breathtaking nature (a flock of pelicans, meadows of yellow wildflowers, rolling sets of whitecap waves).

As the sun set on the second half of my journey, fellow passengers in the observation car formed an impromptu band complete with an acoustic guitar and mandolin. Word slowly spread and travelers trickled in from other parts of the train to take turns singing songs from cultures around the world.

While it would've been more efficient to fly between the two Californian cities, the meditative romance of slow-paced train travel lends truth to the cliché that the journey is just as important as the destination. And in a country as diverse as this one, there’s truly no better way to witness its beauty—and complexity—than by train.

With over a dozen long distance Amtrak routes and even more private rail operators in states like Alaska and Hawaii, the challenge then becomes picking which train trips to take. Here, we’ve selected 13 of the most scenic train rides in the US that are worth booking for the views alone.

This story has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Departing from the new Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, the 10-hour train travels along the Hudson River up until Albany, then passes through Saratoga Springs and the dazzling Lake Champlain before arriving in Canada. Take this route in the fall during peak foliage season to watch New England’s changing autumnal colors glide by your window.

The 5 Most Scenic Amtrak Train Routes for Unparalleled Views of the United States

One of the great advantages of American rail travel — what makes the length and expense of a long train journey worth it — is the opportunity to see the breathtaking beauty and sweep of the land as you pass through it. An airplane may afford a bird’s-eye views of city grids, patches of rotating crops, or the occasional canyon or mountain, but for appreciating the sheer scale and diversity in climate, topology, and more of the continental United States, nothing compares to a long-distance train. It’s true that on a road trip by automobile a person can stop where they choose and pick their own routes, but with the exception of noted scenic highways , the interstate system can be a soul-sucking tangle of concrete ribbons alleviated by characterless rest stops and an endless cavalcade of the same dozen-odd fast-food restaurants.

California Zephyr

Texas eagle, heartland flyer, sunset limited.

I’ve spent days on trains crisscrossing this country, occasionally on rail lines following some of the oldest known overland routes on the continent — in some cases, trails first worn into the earth by ancient herds of buffalo — and I can think of no better way to traverse the plains, mountains, prairies, deserts, forests, and even a few national parks from city to town to village and all points in between. Some lines even have “Trails & Rails” programs where National Parks Service employees give information about the sights. So buy yourself a ticket and park yourself in one of Amtrak’s long-distance glass-domed Sightseer Lounge observation cars for the most scenic views of America you’ve ever seen.

Departing from Chicago and arriving outside San Francisco in Emeryville, California, via Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah, (or reverse, if heading east,) the Zephyr is famous for being Amtrak’s most scenic train. It’s more than a two-day trip (51 hours without delay,) and the first day (heading west) takes you across Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. If you’re picturing lots of corn, you’re right. That first day is a dive right into the deep end of just how much corn is grown in this country, occasionally punctuated by ruminating cattle and horses.

But if corn to the horizon isn’t your notion of the ideal vista, don’t fret. The next morning, after an hour or so at Denver’s gorgeous Union Station — complete with a luxury hotel, dining, and shopping, as well as light rail and bus connections throughout the city and to local ski spots if you decide to stay — the Zephyr heads off up into the beautiful Rocky Mountains .

You ascend into the mountains along a series of gloriously-engineered tunnels, embankments, and cuttings carved out of the Earth that take the train ever higher, curving through valleys and rounding peaks to reveal the vast sweeps of plain you’ve just left behind. The vegetation changes as you rise, as does the fauna; you’ll definitely see deer, and sightings of mountain lions and bears aren’t unheard of either. There’s a brief stop at the beautiful historic Glenwood Springs , a hot springs resort town favored by Teddy Roosevelt, where you can stretch your legs and get a lungful of mountain air.

I’ve heard the Texas Eagle described as “the pride of the fleet” by Amtrak announcers. I’m unsure whether this is merely an example of typical Texan boasting or a genuine claim, but either way, this train deserves mention as one of the prettiest rides in America. The Eagle flies daily from Chicago to San Antonio, with three trains a week making a hook turn to continue on to Los Angeles. The first leg of the trip down through Missouri and Arkansas is only really spectacular if you manage to get a near-full moon shining at night when you’re going through the swamps — it’s a picture of haunting serenity. The next day, when the sun is high, you should be able to revel in that incredible unmatched capacity for distance that the Texas landscape affords. One particular highlight is crossing the Brazos river, its arms stretching out on either side seemingly to infinity. True to its name, I have actually seen eagles soaring overhead while riding this train.

Connecting to the Texas Eagle route at Fort Worth is the little-known and often-overlooked Heartland Flier. This line, subsidized by the State of Oklahoma, provides service to Oklahoma City, and although it isn’t an exceptionally long trip, it boasts some lovely views, especially if you catch some of that inimitable tornado-alley electric weather; I once saw a discrete thundercloud waltz from one end of the horizon to the other, passing over our observation car hurling jagged lighting and sleet the whole time while the rest of the sky stayed clear blue and calm around it. The old Southwest Railroad station in Oklahoma City is also one of the prettiest small stations I’ve ever seen, decorated in a Native American-chic Art Deco style.

The Sunset Limited travels between Los Angeles and New Orleans, skirting the Mexican Border, with major stops in Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston. As the name implies, one of the great attractions on this trip is the sun. Whether you’re riding towards or away from it as it sets or rises, the light you’ll see on this trip — especially during the portions in the Arizona, New Mexico, and West Texas deserts — gives the dusty land the purple-and-orange cast for which the West is so famous. The large desert clouds in their dawn and twilight hues soaring over the rocky landscapes only add to the extraterrestrial feeling of this ride.

The Crescent, which swings between New York and New Orleans via Atlanta, isn’t an especially picturesque train (it doesn’t even have an observation car) except for one very special part: on the ride in or out of New Orleans, the train goes across big and beautiful Lake Pontchartrain. This all-too-brief segment of the journey approaches the truly sublime. Picture the Crescent, speeding across a narrow causeway, with water as far as the eye can see on either side and waterfowl flocking overhead. You feel like a stone skipping across the ocean. If you board the train headed north, this indescribable scene is made even more beautiful by taking place early in the morning with the sun, low in the sky, still nearly kissing the brim of the lake.

There are some amenities we all like to see when we fly — and some secret ways to get them. Delta Air Lines is already an industry leader in free WiFi on domestic flights. Now, the company is looking to roll out the service internationally. Beginning this summer, the carrier will introduce free WiFi presented by T-Mobile on specific long-haul international flights. The move takes the airline closer to its eventual goal — free WiFi on every flight. Delta Air Lines’ free WiFi: A valuable perk, now on international flights

Delta already features complimentary, streaming-quality connectivity on almost 700 aircraft — about 90% of the company’s domestic fleet. The airline looks to take that further, with most passengers having access before the end of 2023. To do that, the carrier will gradually roll out the service on Viasat-equipped widebody airplanes, to ensure quality and reliability.

The Most Iconic Train Scenes In Movies

Hogwarts Express

All aboard! Since the early silent films, trains have been a staple in practically every movie genre imaginable. People often go to the movies as a way to escape their everyday lives, and what better metaphor is there for travel than the exotic and often luxurious world of trains?

Depending on the type of movie you're watching, however, a train scene can evoke a wide range of emotions. Romantic movies offer tearful farewell scenes at train stations. Action-adventure films provide exciting fight sequences in (and sometimes on ) a high-speed train. And then there are the fantasy films that allow trains to literally soar off the tracks and fly past the boundaries of imagination.

If you're a dedicated trainspotter like Sheldon Cooper of " The Big Bang Theory ," or just love the romance that comes from riding the rails, get ready to revisit some amazing journeys. These are the most iconic train scenes in movies.

The General

The General

Let's start with one of the very first iconic train movies — now regarded as one of the greatest American films ever made. In 1926, United Artists released "The General," a silent comedy film starring the legendary Buster Keaton. Taking place during the American Civil War, we follow the adventures of Western & Atlantic Railroad Confederate train engineer Johnnie Gray (Keaton) and his beloved locomotive "The General."

In the film, The General is stolen by Union spies and Johnnie pursues it into Union territory. At one point, Johnnie crosses a bridge and sets it on fire to prevent The General from following. When the Union officer in pursuit orders the train to cross anyway, The General chugs across the bridge which collapses beneath its weight and sends it falling into the river.

What's truly remarkable about this scene is that the train that falls into the river really is a full working steam locomotive and cars and not a model. This made  the train scene the most expensive scene ever filmed in the silent era with an estimated cost of $42,000 (about half a million dollars today). The train wreckage actually stayed at the bottom of Oregon's Row River until it was salvaged for iron during World War II ...  although you can still see bits of it today .

Mission: Impossible

Mission Impossible train scene

Tom Cruise's " Mission: Impossible " movie franchise seems intent on topping their stunt sequences with each film. Over the years, we've seen Cruise, as secret agent Ethan Hunt, hang from the outside of a plane, scale the tallest building on Earth, and perform a high-altitude halo jump. The fact that  these stunts are real and not achieved with green screens speaks volumes about the lengths the filmmakers and Cruise will go for their fans.

But it's Ethan's  epic battle atop a speeding TGV train in the original "Mission Impossible" (1996) that first made audiences sit up and take notice. Having secured a top-secret "NOC List" containing the true identities of covert Impossible Mission Force operatives, Ethan attempts to flush out a traitor in the IMF by delivering the list to arms dealer Max (Vanessa Redgrave) in return for the identity of the mole ... who turns out to be none other than Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), Ethan's former mentor.

But Jim won't go down easily. After stealing millions of dollars from Ethan, he makes his way to the roof of the speeding train to rendezvous with his getaway helicopter. Ethan follows and, against insane wind resistance, tethers the helicopter to the train so that it flies into the Channel Tunnel. He then climbs onto the helicopter, blows it up with a stick of exploding gum, and rides the explosion back to the train. Impossible? Absolutely. But then, that's his job description.

Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2

Sam Raimi's " Spider-Man " did an amazing job of telling the webslinger's origin, but it's " Spider-Man 2 " that many fans consider the best film in the trilogy — and it's easy to see why. No other Spider-Man movie has depicted Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire)'s terrible "Parker Luck" so well. In the first hour, Peter loses his job, his spider-powers, and any chance of being with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), the woman he loves.

Fortunately, Peter recovers his powers for the film's climax — just in time to face off against Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), on top of a high-speed train. From there, things get crazier. Doc Octopus snatches passengers out of the train with his mechanical arms and hurls them at Spider-Man — only for Spidey to weave web hammocks and save them. Undaunted, Doctor Ock sabotages the train's brakes, and Peter is forced to slow down the train with his webbing and superhuman strength as the train hurls toward an unfinished bridge.

Spider-Man triumphs — but his road to victory is one of the  most painful and exciting sequences ever filmed in a superhero movie . The scene of Spider-Man holding back a massive train with nothing but a few strands of webbing and his body is so excruciating you'll swear you'll pull a muscle watching it. Heroes like Superman can stop runaway trains with minimal difficulty, but Spidey really has to work for this win. And we love him for that.

Ant-Man

Not all train scenes need to be giant epic sequences to be memorable. Sometimes, what makes a good train scene is all a matter of perspective. While other superheroes end up battling on the Bifrost or in Wakanda, Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has his most memorable battle on a toy train set in " Ant-Man ."

After gaining size-altering powers from Doctor Hank Pym's Ant-Man suit, Scott Lang secretly uses his abilities to watch over his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson). But when Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll), another size-shifting villain, threatens Cassie, Scott rushes to her defense. Shrinking to the size of insects, the two take the fight to Cassie's bedroom table — and  nearly get flattened by her Thomas the Tank Engine toy train .

It's a hilarious yet still exciting fight depending on what angle you're watching it from. Seen up close, the battle takes on epic proportions as Ant-Man lifts entire box cars and flings them at his enemy. Seen from far away, it looks ridiculous since all of those superhero moves amount to a toy train falling off its tracks. Yet by the end, everyone gets to see just how dangerous Thomas the Tank Engine can be when one of Ant-Man's growth discs accidentally lands on the toy, expanding it to the size of a real train that smashes through the house of Scott's ex-wife and crushes a police car. Think that'll come out of his alimony payments?

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is one archeologist with plenty of fun quirks. During "Raiders of the Last Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," we learn Indy has a pathological fear of snakes, is proficient with a bullwhip, wears a trademark hat, and has a distinctive scar on his chin (actually a  real-life scar Ford sustained in a car crash ).

As it turns out, every single one of these character quirks were acquired by Indy during a train ride. In the opening scene of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," we discover that a teenage Indiana (River Phoenix) witnessed some grave robbers steal a golden crucifix from a cave back in 1912. Feeling the artifact belongs in a museum, Indy takes the crucifix, causing the robbers to chase him onto a circus train.

As he moves from one car to another, Indy falls into a snake pit, giving him a crippling new phobia. He fends off a lion with a bullwhip that gives him his facial scar. And while he loses the crucifix thanks to a corrupt sheriff, he gains the admiration of the leader of the robbers who gifts Indy with his hat.

The Indiana Jones movie franchise has always been a love letter to the adventure serials from the 1930s, and this scene celebrates this by explaining Indy's entire backstory in  one wonderfully traumatic train ride .

Since You Went Away

Since You Went Away

So far, we've placed the spotlight on action sequences involving trains. But train scenes can deal with more somber material, as the 1944 classic "Since You Went Away" reveals. The film follows a family traveling by train to reunite with their husband and father before he ships off to fight in World War II. Over the course of the trip, teenager Jane (Jennifer Jones) fall in love with Bill (Robert Walker), a corporal in the U.S. Army. They get engaged, but Bill asks Jane to wait until after the war to get married, leading to a  crying Jane running after his departing train to tell him goodbye as he throws her his watch as a parting gift.

Sadly, this marks the last time Bill and Jane get to be together since Bill dies in the war. Although considered cliché by audiences today, and even parodied in films like "Airplane!" (1980), the scene is very poignant in "Since You Went Away." Train stations are often associated with romance, and you couldn't ask for a more romantic goodbye scene than seeing your lover off at a train.

Back to the Future Part III

Back to the Future Part III

Train heists are a popular cinema trope, but according to Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), hijacking an 1885 steam train in " Back to the Future Part III " wasn't a stick-up but " a science experiment ." Regardless, this train scene ranks as one of the tensest action sequences in the trilogy. Needing to get the train up to 88 miles per hour so it can push the DeLorean time machine into the future, Doc develops his version of "Presto Logs" to provide the engine with enough power. Unfortunately, this means the engine will overheat and blow up in minutes.

That's not the only problem Doc and Marty (Michael J. Fox) need to deal with. After powering up the furnace, they make their way back to the DeLorean by climbing onto the roof of the  speeding train as it hurls toward an unfinished bridge . Unfortunately, Doc's girlfriend Clara (Mary Steenburgen) unknowingly boards the doomed train, forcing Doc to go back for her just as the furnace explodes.

Fortunately, Marty provides Doc with a last-second save by passing him a hoverboard, allowing Doc and Clara to fly to safety seconds before the train falls off the side of a ravine. That's not the last we see of Doc though. In the final scene, we learn Doc built a new  steam-powered locomotive time machine with the ability to fly. Where they're going, they won't need ... tracks.

Inception

Christopher Nolan's mind-bending film " Inception " delighted in playing with audience's minds. Taking place largely within a lucid dream where the normal rules of physics no longer apply, the film allowed the FX artists and set designers to truly test the limits of imagination.

After accepting a risky job to plant an idea deep within a powerful man's subconscious, professional dream thief Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his team of specialists craft a complex con involving military-developed shared dream technology. Unfortunately, Cobb has a bizarre problem — the guilt he feels over his wife's death causes a mental construct of her to manifest in his dreams and sabotage his missions. To the team's horror, "Dream Mal" (Marion Cotillard) makes her presence felt almost immediately after they arrive in their target's mind — by creating a  massive dream train smashes through a city street and rams their tax cab , nearly killing them all.

This isn't the only time we see a train scene in "Inception." Turns out the reason "Mal" used a train is because the real Mal and Cobb had once been trapped inside a dream world for the mental equivalent of decades. When Mal began seeing their dream as reality,  Cobb planted the idea that their world was an illusion — and woke them both up by allowing a train to run over them. Sadly, the idea of the world's unreality continued to infect Mal, and she later killed herself in real life, believing she was returning to her dream reality.

The Incredibles

The Incredibles

" The Incredibles " gave us one of animation's best superhero families — but it all started with a massive train accident that completely destroyed the superhero community. When Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) meets up with his old enemy Bomb Voyage (Dominique Louis), it looks like the start of another one of their usual battles. But when Buddy Pine, an overzealous fan boy, gets in the way, an errant bomb winds up destroying a huge section of the city's elevated train tracks.

Mr. Incredible manages to stop the train from falling , but the resulting bad press from all the injured passengers forces all the public superheroes to go undercover. The fallout proves particularly devastating to Mr. Incredible who falls into depression and becomes an overweight shadow of his former self. Maybe he should have taken some lessons from Spider-Man. Everyone loved the webslinger after he saved a New York train from Doctor Octopus in "Spider-Man 2."

The Polar Express

The Polar Express

Most of the films on this list only feature a train in one or two key sequences. " The Polar Express ," however, builds the entire premise of its movie around a train. Based off of the celebrated picture book by Chris Van Allsburg, "The Polar Express" follows a boy (Daryl Sabara) struggling to hold onto his belief in magic and Christmas. When a mysterious magic train appears in front of his house one night, the boy takes a leap of faith and climbs onboard, joining a bunch of children on their way to the North Pole.

What follows is a magical journey that's equal parts heartwarming movie and roller coaster ride. Those audiences lucky enough to see the film as it was meant to be seen in IMAX 3-D know the film is filled with scenes showing the train careening over icy hills,  sliding across frozen lakes , and generally executing feats only Santa Claus' train could perform. Then there are all the musical numbers being performed inside the diner cars as dancing waiters serve hot chocolate to the kids.

With the "Hero Boy" and "Hero Girl" as our viewpoint characters, we even get a peek at the inner workings of the train, including the engine and a spooky section occupied by a creepy (but friendly) ghost. If Christmas is defined by "scary ghost stories" and "tales of the glory," then it's no surprise that "The Polar Express" has become a regular Christmas movie for some families.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Hogwarts Express

Let's be honest — if you could choose only one fantasy train to ride in, the Hogwarts Express would easily top the list. Originally only found in the pages of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books, audiences got to see the train on the big screen in " Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ."

Practically everything about the train is memorable, from the way young Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) manages to find his way to the hidden " Platform 9 ¾ " at London King's Cross Station to his first meeting with future best friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). Then there's the Trolley Witch (Jean Southern) who arrives mid-journey to offer magical confections like Chocolate Frogs and Cauldron Cakes to the young witches and wizards.

Still, the Wizarding World is dangerous, and Harry's encountered numerous dangers during his train rides. In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," he nearly gets the life sucked out of him by a dementor. Then in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," rival Draco Malfoy petrifies Potter when he spies on the Slytherin carriage.

Dangers aside, riding on the Hogwarts Express ranks high on the wish lists of many fans. This is why many travel to Scotland to board The Jacobite, the actual train used in the "Harry Potter" films , which journeys through many familiar sights from the movies. Just stay clear of the dementors.

The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger

" The Lone Ranger " (2013) was a box office bomb and disappointed audiences. However, even the harshest critics couldn't help but admire the final chase scene where the Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) and Tonto (Johnny Depp) engage in one of the most  epic train battles in movie history .

The scene sees the Lone Ranger confront corrupt railroad tycoon Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson) and his henchman Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) during Cole's railroad union ceremony. Realizing Cole will use the mined silver on one of the trains to gain more power, Tonto steals the train. Simultaneously, the Lone Ranger pursues another train holding his love interest and her son captive.

What follows is an insanely over-the-top fight scene accompanied by the Lone Ranger's theme song, "The William Tell Overture." Highlights include the Lone Ranger's unusually intelligent horse Silver galloping over rooftops and leaping onto the top of the train to chase the bad guys. At one point, the hero catches a bullet thrown to him from a moving train, reloads his gun, and shoots the gun out of Cole's hand from half a mile away.

And just when it looks like Cole will get away, Tonto gleefully reveals they blew up a railroad bridge, causing the train to fall into the river and drown Cole beneath all his silver. Box office flop or not, this scene holds up remarkably well in repeat viewings.
