Amtrak Pacific Surfliner

The best train rides in the USA for seriously gorgeous views

From coastal routes to journeys through the mountains, these train rides spotlight all of America's most stunning scenery.

Clara Hogan

From redwood groves to sprawling desert landscapes to miles of picturesque countryside, America has no shortage of stunning scenery across its 50 states. One of the best ways to take in all the beauty is by hopping aboard a train.

While a road trip through America is always a great choice to see the country's sights, we'd argue train travel is even better. Not only is riding  on a train a timeless experience with notes of romance and nostalgia, but there's no airport stress or need to be at attention behind the wheel. Instead,  you can sit back, relax and simply stare out the window as you take it all in.

Below, you'll find the best and most scenic train rides across the country. On the West Coast, take in ocean views aboard the Coast Starlight (from Los Angeles to Seattle ) or the Surfliner, which hugs the California coast for miles. On the East Coast, the Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you through the Mount Washington area in New Hampshire. Looking for something even more adventurous? Head to Alaska  to catch the Denali Star’s 350-mile trek from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

Whether you're looking for a multi-day adventure or a route that only lasts a few hours, these train rides won't disappoint.

Best train rides in the USA

Rockies to the Red Rocks

1.  Rockies to the Red Rocks

Denver, co to moab, ut.

Trip length: Two days

The first U.S. offering from luxury Canadian company Rocky Mountaineer, the ' Rockies to the Red Rocks ' trip takes passengers on a two-day ride from Denver to Moab—passing through stunning Rocky Mountains and southwest scenery along the way. Best of all? Passengers will witness all that gorgeous nature from the train's glass-dome top! That's right, we're talking about unobstructed views of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the USA . The 2024 season runs from April 14 through October 9.

Coast Starlight

2.  Coast Starlight

Los angeles, ca to seattle, wa.

Trip length: 36 hours

Traveling by train instead puts a spin on the classic left-coast road trip. The advantages? There are zero wrong-turn fights and way more photo ops. The 1,377-mile Coast Starlight route hits the best of the West: Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and more. On the 36-hour trip, bounce from your seat to the dining car and the 'sightseer lounge car,' where all the seats face the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows.

Pacific Surfliner

3.  Pacific Surfliner

San diego, ca to san luis obispo, ca.

Trip length: 8-9 hours

If you're looking for a train ride with ocean views, you can't beat Amrak's Pacific Surfliner , which travels along a 351-mile route, many of the trip is directly along the California coast. The route starts out in San Diego before meandering up through Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other stops before ending in San Luis Obispo in the central part of the state.

The Grand Canyon Railway

4.  The Grand Canyon Railway

Williams, az to the grand canyon, az.

Trip length: 2 hours 15 minutes

Sure, you may have been to the Grand Canyon already, but have you ever admired Grand Canyon country by train? On The Grand Canyon Railway , you’ll depart from Williams, Arizona, and roll through pine forests and prairies, spotting pronghorn and bald eagles, before arriving two hours and 15 minutes later at the epic South Rim. All of the historic cars of the Grand Canyon Railway have fascinating former lives and some have glass-dome ceilings for unstoppable panoramas.

The Empire Builder

5.  The Empire Builder

Chicago, il to portland, or.

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight.

The Alaska Denali Star

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

Anchorage, ak to fairbanks, ak.

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild.

Skunk Train

7.  Skunk Train

Willits, ca.

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Bryson city, nc.

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Bretton woods, nh.

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day.

The Napa Valley Wine Train

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa valley, ca.

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

California Zephyr

11.  California Zephyr

Emeryville, ca to reno, nv.

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.

The Hawaiian Railway Society

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train.

Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, co to silverton, co.

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

The Ethan Allen Express

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

New york city, ny to burlington, vt.

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

road trip train scene

8 of the best scenic train routes to ride in the U.S.

The White Pass & Yukon Route train climbs the White Pass railway with many passenger rail cars in tow.

By AAA staff

December 28, 2021

Seeing America's great natural scenery is a must, and rail travel can offer an even more immersive experience than road tripping.

Without your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, it's easier to take in the sights—many of which are untouched by roads. We look at some of the most scenic train routes in the U.S.

Railroad tracks by the sea near Lompoc, California

The Coast Starlight runs by the sea in much of Southern California.

1. Coast Starlight , Amtrak

Los Angeles, CA — Seattle, WA

This overnight route winds north from Los Angeles Union Station along the coast in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and San Francisco Bay before turning inland. From there, the scenery switches to the beauty of the Cascade Range, heralded by the appearance of Mount Shasta early on the second morning of the trip. The rest of the second day sees the beauty of the Cascades on full display, with snow-capped peaks and pristine pine forests, before arriving in Seattle that night.

A train passes through a mountain gorge with pine trees and snow-capped mountains.

The White Pass & Yukon Route travels through mountain gorges in Alaska.

2. White Pass & Yukon Route

Skagway, AK – Whitehorse, YT, Canada

The Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s brought thousands of prospectors to Alaska, many of whom disembarked in Skagway and hiked through the White Pass on their way to the gold fields in the Canadian Yukon. The hiking trail was replaced by the White Pass & Yukon Route railway when it was completed in 1900, and while the gold and the prospectors are gone, the railway remains.

White Pass is on the U.S. side of the border and is arguably the most scenic portion of the route. The White Pass Summit Excursion is about 2.5 hours round-trip and features vintage passenger coaches, as well as a chance to see the original Klondike Trail of 1898 cut into the rocks. The railway is planning to resume excursions to the Canadian portion of its route in summer 2022.

3. Grand Canyon Railway

Williams, AZ – Grand Canyon National Park Williams, AZ – The North Pole (seasonal)

All year round, the 64-mile trip from the Williams train station to the Grand Canyon passes through multiple ecosystems, and the train gives you a front-row seat to all of them. Start off among the ponderosa pines and junipers near Route 66 before transitioning to sweeping vistas of scrub prairie. As you approach the canyon, the scene transitions again to lush pinyon pine forests.

During the holiday season, the railway also adds trips to a different destination: Santa's Village. The 90-minute round trip visits the "North Pole" on select nights in November, December, and January, with hot chocolate, cookies, and storytelling from Santa Claus himself.

Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, is famous for its dramatic scenery.

4. The Pennsylvanian , Amtrak

Pittsburgh, PA – New York, NY

This aptly named train connecting Pittsburgh and Philadelphia gives riders a cross-section of the state in just a day's ride. It departs from the junction of 3 rivers in downtown Pittsburgh and climbs into the Allegheny Mountains. Reaching the eastern edge of the Alleghenies, it makes a dramatic descent down the famous Horseshoe Curve, completed in 1854. (Sit on the right side of the train when heading east, or the left side if heading west for the best view here.)

After winding through more beautiful Appalachian scenery, the train descends into the rolling fields of Pennsylvania Dutch Country before arriving in Philadelphia.

5. California Zephyr , Amtrak

Chicago, IL – San Francisco, CA

If you're a fan of mountain sightseeing, the  California Zephyr  offers a feast for the eyes. The main event is the crossing of Rockies, which sees the train climb above 9,200 feet to pass through the historic Moffat Tunnel. Along the way, passengers are treated to views of the Colorado River and snow-capped mountains, some of which are only visible on this route.

The Zephyr passes through the beautiful rock formations of the Utah and Nevada badlands before climbing once more into the Sierras in California. It traverses the infamous Donner Pass and passes several scenic lakes before descending into the Central Valley and, eventually, San Francisco Bay.

6. Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, CO – Silverton, CO

On the Durango & Silverton, the man-made sights are just as compelling as the natural ones. It's one of the few lines in the U.S. that still operates steam locomotives, and many of the route's passenger coaches are more than a century old. Trips depart from Durango Depot, built in 1882 and preserved in its historical form. (If you can't get enough of historic steam trains, plan to visit the nearby Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway, too.)

The scenery is no slouch, either. The route closely follows the Animas River through the Rockies, with beautiful views of foliage, peaks, and canyons. A highlight is the Highline, a stretch of track where the train slowly edges along a narrow cliff. The route continues running in winter with a slightly shorter itinerary and a lot more snow.

A view of the Huey P. Long Bridge over the Mississippi River at sunset

7. Sunset Limited , Amtrak

New Orleans, LA – Los Angeles, CA

There are few routes that traverse a more diverse landscape than Sunset Limited . Departing from New Orleans, it begins by crossing the mighty Mississippi River on the Huey P. Long Bridge. (Before it was built, trains crossed the river on boats.) It weaves through the flooded fields and Spanish moss of Bayou Country before night falls near Houston.

The next day, the train runs right up to the Mexican border, where orchards grow along the Rio Grande. From there, the scenery steadily becomes more barren as Texas gives way to New Mexico and Arizona, culminating in the Sonoran Desert near Tucson with its massive saguaro cacti. The route crosses the Colorado River at Yuma and enters California, passing the Salton Sea before reaching Palm Springs and, eventually, Los Angeles.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway climbing the mountainside among trees

8. Mount Washington Cog Railway

Mount Washington, NH

The forested scenery on Mount Washington is marvelous, and no less marvelous is the steep railway that lets visitors take it all in. Built in the 1860s, the Mount Washington Cog Railway is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, using toothed gears to climb the mountain's steep grades (an average of 25% and almost 38% in some places). Near the summit, the train traverses Jacob's Ladder, the steepest railway trestle in the world.

The train's itinerary varies by season. In warmer weather, it climbs all the way to the summit, where travelers can see the historic Tip Top House. In winter, heavy snow limits the train to the lower Waumbek and Skyline stations, which still offer great views.

Cass Scenic Railroad

An 11-mile ride through Cass Scenic Railroad State Park features incredible greenery, and the trains used for the trip are the very ones that brought lumber to mining outposts centuries ago . The ride passes the Bald Knob summit, and peaks (literally) at Whittaker Station, which is a former logging camp. The 4 1/2-hour trip is offered Tuesday through Sunday, with special offerings throughout the year.

Scenic train rides in the US you won’t want to miss

These all sound amazing.

road trip train scene

  • Brittany Anas
  • July 25, 2023

Road trips are great, but if you’re in the driver’s seat you don’t really get to sit back, relax and take in the scenery. Enter train travel. This nostalgic mode of transportation is an ideal way to leisurely enjoy the changing landscape — and also lets you access more remote locations.

You can experience Grand Canyon beauty, ride a train that rolls through Napa Valley’s vine-striped landscape, or hop aboard a steam-powered locomotive in Southern Colorado that glides 200 feet above the bluish-green Animas River. Here are three of the most scenic train trips you can take across the U.S.

Napa Valley Wine Train, California

Why not let the conductor of a restored antique railcar be your designated driver during your next trip to Wine Country? The Napa Valley Wine Train is one of the few active passenger railroads in the United States, featuring vintage Pullman rail cars restored with Honduran mahogany paneling, brass accents and luxury armchairs, all reminiscent of the glory days of train travel at the beginning of the 20th century. And that’s just what you experience with the train’s interior!

Enjoy a gourmet meal and sip some vino while the train takes a 36-mile round-trip journey from downtown Napa to St. Helena and back, rolling through the country’s most famous wine region and charming towns like Oak Knoll, Yountville, Oakville and Rutherford.

Passengers can have their pick of trips, from a full-day experience that includes wine tasting to an afternoon tea trip and a murder mystery dinner.

Here’s a post from the @winetrain official Twitter account showing what’s in store:

Grand Canyon Railway And Hotel, Arizona

Departing from Williams, Arizona, passengers aboard the historic Grand Canyon Railway will see a series of beautiful scenes as they travel to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, where the Historic Village sits. they can explore for three hours, then take the train back to Williams for the evening.

As Bob Baker, the general manager of the Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel, says, the experience includes certain highlights, like “the high plains desert, largest ponderosa grove in northern Arizona, the fact that we’re part of one of the biggest natural volcano areas in northern Arizona,” he told The List .

The ride comes with plenty of entertainment, too, with musicians playing Western tunes on instruments like fiddles, guitars and banjos. Cowboy actors even ride alongside for a portion of the expedition.

Durango And Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Colorado

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad takes passengers through a scenic wilderness journey in the San Juan National Forest, and wildlife like deer, elk, bears and sometimes even moose make cameos. The railroad snakes along the river banks and shows off views of canyons and peaks as well as the river below.

“I would say about an hour into the trip we’re treated to a view of the high line which is probably one of the most iconic sections of our railroad,” said Dakotah Andreatta, a car attendant on the train who also notes you may be able to encounter wildlife along the route, such as “deer, elk, bears, sometimes a moose. We can’t guarantee it but sometimes they’re out there.”

The railroad has all kinds of special events, too, including a Polar Express-inspired train ride during the holidays that feels especially magical when the area is blanketed in snow. Other themed excursions include a ghost crawl, cowboy poetry ride and one that’s geared toward photographers.

4 great scenic train rides across the US

Bill Fink

Want to truly immerse yourself in the vastness of the USA? There's no better way than to take a scenic cross-country train trip.

During these long-distance train rides, the journey is just as exciting as the destination itself. Relaxing in your seat as you watch the U.S. landscape out your train car window slowly change from cities to farmlands or from wide-open plains to towering mountains is an experience that's worth the extra transit time.

Amtrak offers many overnight and multiday scenic train rides across the U.S. from the East Coast, the West Coast and everywhere in between. Route names like the Empire Builder, the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr are enough to inspire wanderlust for any traveler.

Whether you're new to train travel or an avid rider of the rails, here are four bucket list-worthy U.S. train rides to take for stunning scenery, plus some tips on how best to book and enjoy them.

Tips for cross-country train travel

road trip train scene

While taking a cross-country train trip can be a rewarding experience, as it offers days to leisurely sit back and enjoy scenic landscapes, many people have worries about how best to book such a long trip and what to expect when it comes to sleeping arrangements. TPG has a few tips to help you get on board with the concept and easily plan your journey.

Browse routes by region

road trip train scene

A good first step to take when looking for a route that's right for you is to search Amtrak's "Browse by Region" menu. You can pick a large area of the country from which to start or finish your trip.

Once you click on an area, Amtrak will provide lists of highlighted long-distance routes, as well as shorter point-to-point trips. You can then select a route like the Capitol Corridor in California before being directed to ticket purchase menus.

Explore Amtrak Vacations

road trip train scene

Amtrak offers curated vacation packages to rail travelers via its Amtrak Vacations website. These tours can include side trips (via bus) to national parks , sightseeing tours in cities and hotel lodging on stopovers along the route. You can search for packages around vacation themes like "Fall Foliage" and "Multiple National Parks."

Amtrak's set of "Most Scenic Journeys" vacation packages include trips lasting up to two weeks that combine rail travel and additional tours. Think of these trips like cruises with shore excursions . Some of the scenic journey-designated options focus on national parks, while others are big-city oriented.

You can click on each option's details to find itineraries, dates and prices. Then, all that's left to do is book your rail vacation.

Consider famous routes

road trip train scene

A shortcut to finding scenic cross-country rail routes on Amtrak is to visit its Amtrak Vacations website and click on "Famous Rail Routes." This set of approximately 20 different overnight train routes gives you a great set of suggestions for your own potential cross-country journeys.

For more details on the fixed routes, click on any of the tabs. Once you've chosen a route, you can either book a package tour with Amtrak Vacations or go to the regular Amtrak website and book a point-to-point trip.

Weigh your accommodation options

Taking an overnight or a multiday train trip means you'll need to sleep aboard the train. All of Amtrak's long-distance train trips provide a variety of seating and room arrangments.

The cheapest way to travel is to simply book a seat on the route. While Amtrak's seating is comfortable, with more legroom than you'll find in an airline's business class, it may not be the way you want to travel for many hours. You can get up, walk the train and stop in the cafe car, but this can still be a tough way to travel during a multiday journey.

Fortunately, Amtrak provides several classes of accommodations on cross-country trips, ranging from shared roomettes with fold-out bunks to bedrooms, larger family bedrooms and suites complete with private bathrooms and showers. Should you book one of these rooms on a cross-country itinerary, you'll enjoy access to a separate dining car.

Prices for the various ticket classes vary widely between routes and dates, so check potential itineraries to find the best option for you.

4 scenic train trips to take in the US

Now that you know the basics when it comes to picking a long-distance train route, you'll want to narrow down your options. Although there are many scenic routes in the U.S., here are our four favorites.

California Zephyr: San Francisco to Chicago

road trip train scene

Amtrak's California Zephyr route travels between San Francisco and Chicago on a three-day journey. The 51-hour trip (on the west-to-east path) begins in nearby Emeryville, California, then travels through central California farmlands up into the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Along this part of the route, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramas from glassed-in viewing cars.

The train continues through Reno and the Nevada deserts into Salt Lake City before traveling up into the Rocky Mountains to reach Denver . You'll descend into the wide-open plains of Nebraska and eventually wind your way into the Windy City.

This trip is a great way to immerse yourself in the American West, as you'll get a true feeling of the vastness of the region and the variety of terrain that makes up the country.

One-way prices start at $141 per person for a seat in coach and $688 for a room.

Empire Builder: Seattle to Chicago

road trip train scene

The Empire Builder train route connects Chicago and Seattle on a 46-hour journey connecting the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. The train loosely follows the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, the route the explorers took to map out the region acquired during the Louisiana Purchase.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark would have appreciated sitting back in the train's viewing cars to enjoy eyefuls of Montana 's Big Sky Country, Glacier National Park , the Cascade Range and the vast plains of North Dakota. Additionally, the explorers would have marveled at the metalwork of North Dakota's towering Gassman Coulee Trestle bridge.

Should you wish to depart or arrive in Portland, Oregon, instead of Seattle, know that there's an alternate route of the Empire Builder from this Pacific Northwest city, so you can plan your itinerary based on your preferences.

One-way train fares from Chicago to Seattle begin at $150 per person, while rooms cost at least $651.

Southwest Chief: Los Angeles to Chicago

road trip train scene

Traverse the American Southwest on a southern route between Los Angeles and Chicago. The Southwest Chief route departs daily and takes roughly 40 hours to cross eight states.

For some of the journey, the train follows the classic American road trip thoroughfare of historic Route 66 . However, unlike its car-friendly neighbor, the train route offers views you won't find while driving the highway, as it winds on twisting tracks that travel through narrow red-rock canyon passages before offering wide-open vistas of mountains and deserts.

The train's main stops include Kansas City, Missouri; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Flagstaff, Arizona. You can also take advantage of excursions from the train when you purchase one of Amtrak's vacation packages. For example, you can visit the Grand Canyon (by train or bus) while the train is stopped in Williams, Arizona.

Even if you never leave the train, the views along the way are enough to create lasting memories.

Expect to pay at least $146 per person for a coach seat on this one-way route or a minimum of $899 for a room.

Crescent: New York City to New Orleans

road trip train scene

See the American South on this 30-hour journey between New York City and New Orleans . Departing the urban landscape of the Big Apple, this route will take you through the Northeastern cityscapes of Philadelphia , Baltimore and Washington, D.C. , among other destinations.

Once it exits the urban corridor, the train winds through the countryside of Virginia and the Carolinas, offering stops in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina. Then, it continues through the Deep South states of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi before reaching its final stop in New Orleans.

Tickets for this one-way route start at $139 for a seat in coach and $580 for a room.

Bottom line

Traveling by train across the U.S. gives you a unique perspective of the scale and scope of the American landscape. While it may be slower than flying across the country, rail travel gives you the opportunity to sit back and savor the journey, appreciating the changing views as the hours roll by.

The four scenic cross-country train trips highlighted here are only some of Amtrak's many long-distance journeys available to book. By exploring Amtrak's website, you can find many different rail journeys in nearly every part of the U.S. Best of all, most offer an array of seating options, so you can choose the ticket that best suits your travel preferences and budget.

What is the most scenic train journey in the world? We’ve chosen some of the most amazing routes in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australasia for an epic adventure by train

From one-day sightseeing trips to spectacular, week-long rides that cross entire continents, we’ve found ten train journeys that are crying out for a window seat. Castles, mountains, rivers, plains, and even rainforests can be seen on your way as you ride the rails on these ten beautiful routes.

North America

Rocky mountaineer’s first passage to the west, canada.

The Rocky Mountaineer company provides a number of trips and holidays by train, and the First Passage to the West is the most well-known. From Vancouver , the routes take you high into the Canadian Rockies, through mountain passes and vast canyons, and across the wilds of British Columbia. Into Alberta and onto Banff, you’ll see some of the most jaw-dropping scenery anywhere in the Americas.

There are curated packages depending on what you’re looking for. From the basic two-day trip from Vancouver to Banff, you can also opt for extra sightseeing tours, or to do a four to five-day round trip. Their Rainforest to Gold Rush route is even longer, again starting in Vancouver, but winding its way north and east for three days, traveling via Whistler and ending in the town of Jasper, surrounded by snow-capped alpine peaks.

A US road trip without having to do any driving? Sounds good, right? Well, that’s pretty much what’s going on here: 560 kilometers of Southern California coast between San Diego and San Luis Obispo, with Los Angeles being the rough halfway point.

It follows the coast almost continuously, the line being mere feet from the ocean at points. The inland sections cross farmland and wide open spaces, as well as wild contrasts such as industrial areas on the outskirts of the cities. It’s not the longest journey on this list — end-to-end is around eight and a half hours — but it’s a great way of traveling from place to place over a longer time at a scenic, relaxed pace.

Linha do Douro, Portugal

The Linha do Douro route takes its name from the Douro River — Shutterstock

The Linha do Douro takes its name from the Douro River which, for much of this route’s 160-kilometer length, runs alongside. The Douro Valley is one of Europe’s most well-known regions of vineyards , with thousands of acres covering the landscape all around.

The route connects two very different places: the village of Pocinho, high up in the Alto Douro, and the city of Porto on the Atlantic coast. The whole journey takes around three and a half hours, but the trains are nicely regular, so there are plenty of chances to hop off and explore some of the towns en route, or even do a part of the route by boat.

Flåmsbana, Norway

The higher the train climbs, the more spectacular the scenery of Norway becomes — Shutterstock

This isn’t much of an adventure, but it certainly is a pretty route. In 20 kilometers and about an hour, the train takes you from sea level at the Aurlandsfjord in Flåm to Myrdal mountain station. The Flåm Valley is home to beautiful villages, meadows and flowers; the higher the train climbs, the more spectacular the scenery becomes.

Following a sparkling blue river that crashes and flows down the valley, the line teeters on the edge of seemingly impassable cliffs, heading through 20 tunnels cut into the rock, and emerging at the Kjosfossen waterfall where the train stops for passengers to take photos.

Glacier Express, Switzerland

One of the most beautiful countries in Europe in terms of scenery, Switzerland is also famous for its railways, which are clean, punctual, and — through sheer luck of being in such a mountainous country — spectacular. Wandering for eight hours across the south of the country between St. Moritz and Zermatt, the line winds its way through dazzling Alpine scenery, across narrow bridges crossing heart-stopping ravines, through tunnels, and alongside burbling rivers.

It’s a thoroughly modern service, with excellent food available on board, and views enhanced by the fact that the carriages have huge windows and glass ceilings, meaning an even more panoramic experience. You’ll rarely have rolled into any destination more stylishly.

Trans-Siberian Railway

The grandfather of them all — almost 10,000 kilometers of railway stretching between Moscow and Vladivostok. Commissioned on the whim of Emperor Alexander III, it was already being written about in awed terms before it was even completed, as adventurers and railway enthusiasts rode sections of the journey in anticipation.

Time hasn’t dulled its appeal, although the current political situation has made things more difficult. What hasn’t changed is the sheer scale of it. The journey takes eight days and spans eight time zones , navigating mountain passes, crossing steppe, and skirting rivers and lakes. The ever-changing landscape is a different planet depending on the season as well, so a glorious, colorful summer journey is a completely different experience from a winter trip across ice fields and past frozen bodies of water. If you choose to do it, it remains one of the world’s great adventures.

Kandy — Ella, Sri Lanka

Girl leaning out of train window in Sri Lanka to take a photo of scenery on her phone — Shutterstock

Taking anywhere from eight and a half to 10 hours, Kandy to Ella is in fact just one section of a longer line that runs from Colombo to Badulla. Initially built by the colonial British to transport goods such as tea, the line is now a vital transport link for locals.

It’s dusty, it’s hot, it’s exhausting, but it’s also exhilarating as carriages fill with people singing songs, selling delicious homemade food and drinks, laughing and smiling. The train heads through the hills, and through the open windows, you can see dots of people in brightly-colored saris working on the tea farms. You can, if you want, ride this route in a first-class carriage, but why would you do that? This is one route where the stiff, stuffy world of first class goes against the whole point of the journey.

Australasia

Kuranda scenic railway, australia.

Similar to the Flåmsbana above, this is a short pleasure trip more than a grand adventure, with a one-way trip taking just under two hours. It’s absolutely worth it, though, as the train winds its way from the city of Cairns on the coast up and across the Great Dividing Range to the rural town of Kuranda, situated deep in the Wet Tropics rainforest.

The sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest pour in through the train windows into the period carriages as you snake your way through lush forests, across precipitous bridges and past crashing waterfalls. There’s a commentary as the journey continues, letting you know what you’re seeing, and teaching you about the history of the rainforest and the railway.

TranzAlpine, New Zealand

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Great Journeys New Zealand (@greatjourneysnz)

Not only an example of New Zealand ’s love of a deliberately misplaced letter Z (see also: Split Enz ), the TranzAlpine is also one of the southern hemisphere’s most scenic train journeys. The route crosses the country’s South Island, between Christchurch and Greymouth, and takes around five hours to complete its 223 kilometers.

Beginning by crossing the patchwork fields of Canterbury Plains, the train rumbles towards Springfield, the gateway to the Southern Alps. Previously, the line had ended here, before planning, engineering and bravery constructed a track through the mighty mountains. Via the township of Arthur’s Pass, the train climbs along the cliffs of the Waimakariri River, through 15 tunnels and over four dizzying viaducts. Once over the mountains, the landscape turns lush and green as you pass rivers, lakes and forests before finally arriving at Greymouth.

Serra verde express, brazil.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Serra Verde Express (@serraverde_oficial)

Running from the city of Curitiba almost a kilometer above sea level, the Serra Verde is a route that began in the 19th century through the Belgian-French company Chemin de Fer Bresilien acquiring permission to build a railway to open up trade routes. It now exists as a train carrying tourists for three hours down to the town of Morretes.

It begins in the heavily-forested mountains and heads into the Pico do Marumbi State Park. A tropical wilderness of crashing waterfalls and cloud forests, make sure you get a seat by an open window to experience the full sensation of the breeze, the smells of vegetation and water, and the thrill of flying over viaducts with seemingly nothing beneath you. That, by the way, means getting a cheaper ticket — the only class that’s air-conditioned (and therefore has sealed windows) is the top Litorina de Luxo class, so get anything but that. What’s the point in being sealed in on a trip like this?!

Pennsylvania Scenic Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

Last revised: October 13, 2023

By:  Adam Burns

With such a diverse history, Pennsylvania scenic train rides offer everything imaginable. The state features one of the most prolific collection of railroad attractions throughout the country with numerous museums and rides available.

  • One can enjoy fine dining on the Tioga Central Railroad.
  • Walk among exquisitely preserved rolling stock at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania Railroad.
  • Take a trip back in time to the 19th century aboard the Strasburg Railroad (the second most popular scenic train ride in the country, witnessing more than 400,000 riders annually).

Pennsylvania also boasts a vast collection of operational steam locomotives at such places as Steamtown in Scranton and the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad in New Hope.

Finally, you can catch trolley rides at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, Electric City Trolley Museum, and the Rockhill Trolley Museum.

Please note!   This guide information covers Pennsylvania scenic train rides related to vacation/tourism destinations-only.  If you are interested in long-distance rail travel please visit  Amtrak's website , our nation's passenger rail carrier.

State Rail History

Pennsylvania's rail history dates back to the Baltimore & Ohio's chartering (America's first common-carrier).  In 1827 the tiny Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad was built to haul coal from a mine near Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe).

According to an in-depth article  Trains Magazine  published in its January, 2007 issue entitled, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," this operation is also believed to be America's first tourist railroad.

After coal movements ceased in 1872, the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) acquired the railroad in 1874 and subsequently leased it to brothers Theodore and H. L. Mumford who converted the line into a tourist attraction.

It proved quite popular and carried on under this arrangement for more than a half-century.  On May 24, 1929 the CNJ sold the property where it became the stand-alone Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway Company.

Alas, this enterprise proved short-lived; a victim of the Great Depression, it closed in 1932.

For Pennsylvania, its involvement with modern railroads began with the construction of a canal (officially known as the Pennsylvania Canal) on February 25, 1826 to connect Harrisburg with Pittsburgh.

A few years later plans were finalized for an extension to Philadelphia.

In an interesting design, engineers came up with an interlinking railroad/canal system, collectively known as the Main Line of Public Works.

While successful, officials quickly realized an all-rail route was the most efficient.  It could operate at greater speeds and in all types of weather.

Fearful their port of Philadelphia would fall behind rivals New York, Charleston, and Baltimore, they decided on just such an arrangement and, according to Mike Schafer and Brian Solomon's book, " Pennsylvania Railroad ," chartered the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1846.

The PRR became the most powerful and successful railroad in America, carrying an impeccable credit rating and unimaginable cash reserves.

By the early 20th century it operated more than 10,000 route miles, track mileage totaling 28,000, and served 11 states.

It confidently (and arrogantly) proclaimed itself, " The Standard Railroad Of The World ."  But the PRR was not Pennsylvania's only railroad.

Several other widely recognized names also served it some fashion including the Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central, Lehigh Valley, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Reading Railroad, Lehigh & New England, Erie Railroad, and Delaware, Lackawanna & Western.

Pennsylvania's importance to the industry even transcended railroads:

  • The country's largest (and nearly oldest) steam locomotive manufacturer was located in Eddystone (Baldwin Locomotive Works).
  • General Electric's plant in Erie has produced locomotives since the early 20th century.
  • J. G. Brill Company out-shopped streetcar and interurban equipment at its Philadelphia facility from 1869 until 1954 (then under the name, ACF-Brill Motors Company).

Finally, don't miss the Keystone State's numerous engineering landmarks; Tunkhannock Viaduct (Nicholson), Starrucca Viaduct (Lanesboro), remains of the Kinzua Viaduct (McKean County), Horseshoe Curve (near Altoona), and the 48-arch Rockville Bridge spanning the Susquehanna River.

In his book, " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads ," historian John F. Stover points out Pennsylvania's rail mileage peaked at 11,551 in 1920, ranking 3rd among all 50 states.

Unfortunately, for many reasons, ranging from market loss to government regulation, a staggering 55.5% of this rail infrastructure has since been abandoned (6,421 miles).

The Association of American Railroads notes that today, just 5,130 miles remain in service.

  • Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, highlighting the first railroad built through the Allegheny Mountains in central Pennsylvania.

  • Allentown & Auburn Railroad

This short line began in 2015 and operates just over 4 miles of a former Reading Railroad branch between Kutztown and an interchange with Norfolk Southern at Topton.

The railroad also offers public excursions, utilizing a restored, early SW locomotive that was originally built for the Philadelphia, Bethlehem & New England in March, 1937.  The trips are hosted with three cabooses, one coach, and an open flatcar.

  • Bellefonte Historical Railroad

This organization tells the history of railroading in Bellefonte and Centre County, Pennsylvania. They are housed inside the restored Bald Eagle Valley/Pennsylvania Railroad's brick depot, which originally opened on February 11, 1889.

The organization also hosts several public excursions throughout the year using a collection of equipment on-hand.

  • Catawissa Railroad Company

The Catawissa Railroad Company, located in Catawissa, is actually a collection of restored cabooses painted in their original company colors, some of which can be rented for overnight  stays. Also be sure to see the town's preserved Catawissa Railroad (a component of the Reading Railroad) depot.

  • Connellsville Canteen Museum

This museum, a non-profit organization operated by the Fayette County Cultural Trust, is located in the once-busy railroad town of Connellsville.

Their overall mission is to preserve the history of Fayette County's World War II soldiers and veterans, and the sacrifices they made during that conflict.

In addition, they also feature a very nice model train layout known as the Great Indian Creek Valley Railroad, designed and built by Harry Clark.

If you're hungry be sure and stop by their café for either breakfast or lunch.  To learn more, plan a visit, and see all of their displays please visit their website.

  • Train Rides In PA At A Glance

As mentioned above, while the state's involvement with railroads, even in their most rudimentary form, can be traced back to the 1820's, it was the Pennsylvania Railroad's (PRR) opening of its main line from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh in late 1852 that truly brought Pennsylvania into the modern age.

The PRR would eventually grow into a Goliath system as the most powerful railroad in the country with more than 10,000 miles stretching from New York to Chicago with its trackage was heavily concentrated in its home state.

In January, 2007 Trains Magazine published a nearly cover-to-cover piece on all the 50 states' histories with railroads.  It was entitled  " Great Railroading: State-By-State ."

There was considerable coverage given to Pennsylvania, which spoke about its far-reaching operations from magnificent steam locomotives grinding up Horseshoe Curve to small 3-foot, narrow-gauge systems.

The state was also home to substantial streetcar and interurban operations.

road trip train scene

As a whole, scenic train rides in PA do a fine job of highlighting the memory of these transportation companies.

In few other states can you ride behind, or peruse, rail equipment which includes steam locomotives, diesels, and trolleys.

No other attraction provides quite the level of authenticity as the Strasburg Railroad .  It features a fine collection of preserved steam locomotives which take passengers on a 4.5-mile journey through beautiful Lancaster County.

Trips are enjoyed within restored, wooden cars which range from simple coach class to a full-service dining experience.

The charm is only furthered by Pennsylvania's popular Amish Country setting.  If you're after more than just a train, however, consider visiting one of the premier museums in the country right nearby, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania just outside of Lancaster.

There is also the Steamtown National Historic in Scranton which maintains an impressive collection of steam locomotives.  In all, train rides in PA offer a little of everything and definitely are worth considering!

  • The Choo Choo Barn ("Traintown")

Located in Boyertown in Lancaster County this attraction is very near the Strasburg Railroad.  It features a 1,700-foot train layout display for visitors to enjoy.  This is certainly worth a visit if you are planning a trip to ride the Strasburg!

  • Colebrookdale Railroad

A relatively new tourist attraction, the Colebrookdale Railroad, also known as the  Secret Valley Line , began hosting trips in 2014, operating 8.6 miles between Boyertown and Pottstown.

The trackage was originally built by a company carrying the same name, later operated by the Reading Railroad. For more information please visit their website.

  • East Broad Top Railroad

The East Broad Top Railroad, chartered in 1856, was built as a coal hauler, via a line that connected Mt. Union with Woodvale.

After freight operations ended it became a tourist attraction for decades, blossoming into one of Pennsylvania's most popular and successful train rides.  Alas, these trips were discontinued in 2011.

The railroad is currently under a major restoration by new owners East Broad Top Foundation, which began in February, 2020.  Limited excursions resumed in 2021 with a full schedule hopefully available in 2022.

The EBT is a National Historic Landmark.  Long terms plans include reopening as much of the original 33-mile system as possible, much of which has been out of service since 1956.

  • Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train

The Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train, located in Ashland, serves a dual purpose of preserving Pennsylvania's rich mining heritage and offering guests a chance to experience what it was like to ride behind steam-powered trains.  A historic 0-4-0T steam locomotive pulls retrofitted mine cars on about a 1-mile section of track.

  • Portage Station Museum

This museum is located inside the Pennsylvania Railroad's restored depot at Portage. It is operated by the Portage Area Historical Society and houses artifacts as well as an operating model layout. The facility is also not far from the Gallitzin Tunnels and Horseshoe Curve.

My family had a wonderful time. We're so happy Santa came to visit! What a kind, patient Santa! I would've loved to be abe to crack the window for some fresh air, but thats okay. Such a magical ride for my little one. Thank you!

Candy canes, Christmas cookies, hot chocolate, writing letters to santa with a fun train ride and a visit with Santa! Fun, fun, fun! Very friendly staff, this was a really nice experience. Will do again!

Fun time! Rockaway and Garibaldi are beautiful and not as "touristy" as several other coastal towns. Best to get there a bit early to ride in the outdoor cars where all the action is. On the way back we got stuck in the covered car and you can't hear any of the tour info back there.

This is a very scenic ride. The staff are awesome and are very knowledgeable. The history is very interesting and I highly recommend riding this train, I will do this again.

6 beautiful road trips in Italy: drive the country's best routes

road trip train scene

The drive along Italy 's Amalfi Coast, preferably in a vintage Alfa Romeo Spider, is the stuff of travel legend.

And it's just one of dozens of epic road trip routes in this fascinating, richly layered country. Don't be put off by stories of impatient local drivers – the countryside here was made for exploring by road (and stopping every few hundred yards to take another photo).

With an extensive network of well-maintained roads that weave between snow-capped peaks, trace plunging coastlines, and meander through rolling farmland and vineyards to scenic lakes and historic towns, pretty much every journey in Italy is a scenic odyssey, but some road trips stand out as being particularly memorable.

To set the scene, we've chosen six classic road trips ranging from gentle Tuscan jaunts to hair-raising mountain adventures. Some are a little challenging, but they all make for unforgettable experiences! Here are the best road trip routes in Italy.

Positano is a cliffside village on southern Italy's Amalfi Coast. It's a well-known holiday destination with a pebble beachfront and steep, narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafes.

1. The Amalfi Coast

Best classic Italian coastal road trip Salerno–Sorrento; approx 75km/46 miles, 1 day

Experience Italy's most spectacular coastal scenery on this white-knuckle drive along the Amalfi Coast . From Salerno , the main southern gateway to the coast, strike west to Vietri sul Mare , a small town famous for its ceramics and the start point of the coastal road proper. From here, the driving becomes more challenging as the road narrows, the curves become tighter, and the views become ever more dramatic.

After about 20km (12 miles), you'll arrive in Amalfi , the coast's main hub. Stop here to look around the landmark Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea and then head up to Ravello in the hills above. Pause for lunch here, perhaps at the Ristorante Pizzeria Vittoria , and enjoy heady panoramas from the town's lush gardens.

Next, push on to Positano , a chic, near-vertical town where colorful, steeply-stacked houses cascade down the precipitous hillsides. Beyond Positano, the route leads inland, up and across the hilly interior to Sorrento , a lively tourist hot spot overlooked by the dark, brooding bulk of Mount Vesuvius.

Planning tip:  It's a popular drive, so try to come out of season to avoid the traffic. With another day to spare, you can continue north to Naples via the ruins of Pompeii .

A male and female couple ride on the back of a motorbike through the Tuscan countryside as the sun sets

2. The Tuscan tour

Best road trip for art and architecture  Florence–Orvieto; approx 210km/130 miles , 2–3 days

Taking in two of Italy's great medieval cities, the wine treasures of Chianti  and swathes of classic Tuscan scenery, this two-day route leads from Florence to Orvieto in the neighboring region of Umbria . Whet your appetite for the road ahead by feasting on fine art and Renaissance architecture in Florence before striking south to Chianti wine country.

Stop for a tasting at the Enoteca Falorni in Greve and to sample the region's celebrated bistecca (steak) at L'Antica Macelleria Cecchini in Panzano. From here, follow the backroads to Siena , a stunning medieval city centered on an awe-inspiring Duomo and a 12th-century square, the famous Piazza del Campo . Recommended overnight options here include the Pensione Palazzo Ravizza .

In the morning, head to Montalcino to stock up on Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's most revered red wines. A short drive to the east, the Val d'Orcia provides quintessential Tuscan landscapes with its billowing green hills, cypress trees and hilltop towns. Lunch in Pienza, then continue through Montepulciano to Orvieto, a striking hilltop town famous for its remarkable Gothic Duomo .

Planning tip:  While you could easily do this route in two days, consider adding an extra overnight stop to explore the region in more depth.

Surrounded by Alpine peaks and wooded hills, Lake Como (Lago di Como) is the most picturesque of Italy's northern lakes. This leisurely one-day drive takes in elegant art nouveau villas and lush waterfront gardens along the lake's southern shoreline.

The obvious starting point is the town of Como itself. Once you've explored the charming historic center and the nearby Villa Olmo , take the swooping road up to Bellagio . 6. Highlights of Abruzzo

Best road trip for unspoiled landscapes Rome–Sulmona; approx 240km/150 miles, one day

Just over an hour's drive east of Rome , the little-known region of Abruzzo is a world apart from the big city, with wild, empty valleys and unspoiled mountain landscapes. From the capital take the A24 autostrada to Fonte Cerreto, from where it's a twisting climb up to Campo Imperatore, a highland plain overlooked by the Apennines' highest peak, Corno Grande (2,912m/9,553ft).

Continue on to Santo Stefano di Sessanio, a remote, semi-abandoned village high in the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. If you're traveling during the weekend you can lunch at the Locanda Sotto gli Archi ; otherwise, pick up picnic supplies in the village.

In the afternoon, push on to Sulmona, a graceful town set in the shadow of the Morrone massif. Famous for its delicacy confetti (sugar-coated almonds), Sulmona makes a good base for exploring the region's rugged southern reaches, offering good accommodation at the Legacy Casa Residencia and filling food at local restaurants such as Il Vecchio Muro .

Planning tip:  We strongly recommend spending a day or more in Sulmona, exploring the surrounding hills by car or on foot away from the tourist crowds.

The Most Iconic Train Scenes In Movies

Hogwarts Express

All aboard! Since the early silent films, trains have been a staple in practically every movie genre imaginable. People often go to the movies as a way to escape their everyday lives, and what better metaphor is there for travel than the exotic and often luxurious world of trains?

Depending on the type of movie you're watching, however, a train scene can evoke a wide range of emotions. Romantic movies offer tearful farewell scenes at train stations. Action-adventure films provide exciting fight sequences in (and sometimes on ) a high-speed train. And then there are the fantasy films that allow trains to literally soar off the tracks and fly past the boundaries of imagination.

If you're a dedicated trainspotter like Sheldon Cooper of " The Big Bang Theory ," or just love the romance that comes from riding the rails, get ready to revisit some amazing journeys. These are the most iconic train scenes in movies.

The General

Let's start with one of the very first iconic train movies — now regarded as one of the greatest American films ever made. In 1926, United Artists released "The General," a silent comedy film starring the legendary Buster Keaton. Taking place during the American Civil War, we follow the adventures of Western & Atlantic Railroad Confederate train engineer Johnnie Gray (Keaton) and his beloved locomotive "The General."

In the film, The General is stolen by Union spies and Johnnie pursues it into Union territory. At one point, Johnnie crosses a bridge and sets it on fire to prevent The General from following. When the Union officer in pursuit orders the train to cross anyway, The General chugs across the bridge which collapses beneath its weight and sends it falling into the river.

What's truly remarkable about this scene is that the train that falls into the river really is a full working steam locomotive and cars and not a model. This made  the train scene the most expensive scene ever filmed in the silent era with an estimated cost of $42,000 (about half a million dollars today). The train wreckage actually stayed at the bottom of Oregon's Row River until it was salvaged for iron during World War II ...  although you can still see bits of it today .

Mission: Impossible

Tom Cruise's " Mission: Impossible " movie franchise seems intent on topping their stunt sequences with each film. Over the years, we've seen Cruise, as secret agent Ethan Hunt, hang from the outside of a plane, scale the tallest building on Earth, and perform a high-altitude halo jump. The fact that  these stunts are real and not achieved with green screens speaks volumes about the lengths the filmmakers and Cruise will go for their fans.

But it's Ethan's  epic battle atop a speeding TGV train in the original "Mission Impossible" (1996) that first made audiences sit up and take notice. Having secured a top-secret "NOC List" containing the true identities of covert Impossible Mission Force operatives, Ethan attempts to flush out a traitor in the IMF by delivering the list to arms dealer Max (Vanessa Redgrave) in return for the identity of the mole ... who turns out to be none other than Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), Ethan's former mentor.

But Jim won't go down easily. After stealing millions of dollars from Ethan, he makes his way to the roof of the speeding train to rendezvous with his getaway helicopter. Ethan follows and, against insane wind resistance, tethers the helicopter to the train so that it flies into the Channel Tunnel. He then climbs onto the helicopter, blows it up with a stick of exploding gum, and rides the explosion back to the train. Impossible? Absolutely. But then, that's his job description.

Spider-Man 2

Sam Raimi's " Spider-Man " did an amazing job of telling the webslinger's origin, but it's " Spider-Man 2 " that many fans consider the best film in the trilogy — and it's easy to see why. No other Spider-Man movie has depicted Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire)'s terrible "Parker Luck" so well. In the first hour, Peter loses his job, his spider-powers, and any chance of being with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), the woman he loves.

Fortunately, Peter recovers his powers for the film's climax — just in time to face off against Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), on top of a high-speed train. From there, things get crazier. Doc Octopus snatches passengers out of the train with his mechanical arms and hurls them at Spider-Man — only for Spidey to weave web hammocks and save them. Undaunted, Doctor Ock sabotages the train's brakes, and Peter is forced to slow down the train with his webbing and superhuman strength as the train hurls toward an unfinished bridge.

Spider-Man triumphs — but his road to victory is one of the  most painful and exciting sequences ever filmed in a superhero movie . The scene of Spider-Man holding back a massive train with nothing but a few strands of webbing and his body is so excruciating you'll swear you'll pull a muscle watching it. Heroes like Superman can stop runaway trains with minimal difficulty, but Spidey really has to work for this win. And we love him for that.

Not all train scenes need to be giant epic sequences to be memorable. Sometimes, what makes a good train scene is all a matter of perspective. While other superheroes end up battling on the Bifrost or in Wakanda, Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has his most memorable battle on a toy train set in " Ant-Man ."

After gaining size-altering powers from Doctor Hank Pym's Ant-Man suit, Scott Lang secretly uses his abilities to watch over his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson). But when Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll), another size-shifting villain, threatens Cassie, Scott rushes to her defense. Shrinking to the size of insects, the two take the fight to Cassie's bedroom table — and  nearly get flattened by her Thomas the Tank Engine toy train .

It's a hilarious yet still exciting fight depending on what angle you're watching it from. Seen up close, the battle takes on epic proportions as Ant-Man lifts entire box cars and flings them at his enemy. Seen from far away, it looks ridiculous since all of those superhero moves amount to a toy train falling off its tracks. Yet by the end, everyone gets to see just how dangerous Thomas the Tank Engine can be when one of Ant-Man's growth discs accidentally lands on the toy, expanding it to the size of a real train that smashes through the house of Scott's ex-wife and crushes a police car. Think that'll come out of his alimony payments?

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is one archeologist with plenty of fun quirks. During "Raiders of the Last Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," we learn Indy has a pathological fear of snakes, is proficient with a bullwhip, wears a trademark hat, and has a distinctive scar on his chin (actually a  real-life scar Ford sustained in a car crash ).

As it turns out, every single one of these character quirks were acquired by Indy during a train ride. In the opening scene of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," we discover that a teenage Indiana (River Phoenix) witnessed some grave robbers steal a golden crucifix from a cave back in 1912. Feeling the artifact belongs in a museum, Indy takes the crucifix, causing the robbers to chase him onto a circus train.

As he moves from one car to another, Indy falls into a snake pit, giving him a crippling new phobia. He fends off a lion with a bullwhip that gives him his facial scar. And while he loses the crucifix thanks to a corrupt sheriff, he gains the admiration of the leader of the robbers who gifts Indy with his hat.

The Indiana Jones movie franchise has always been a love letter to the adventure serials from the 1930s, and this scene celebrates this by explaining Indy's entire backstory in  one wonderfully traumatic train ride .

Since You Went Away

So far, we've placed the spotlight on action sequences involving trains. But train scenes can deal with more somber material, as the 1944 classic "Since You Went Away" reveals. The film follows a family traveling by train to reunite with their husband and father before he ships off to fight in World War II. Over the course of the trip, teenager Jane (Jennifer Jones) fall in love with Bill (Robert Walker), a corporal in the U.S. Army. They get engaged, but Bill asks Jane to wait until after the war to get married, leading to a  crying Jane running after his departing train to tell him goodbye as he throws her his watch as a parting gift.

Sadly, this marks the last time Bill and Jane get to be together since Bill dies in the war. Although considered cliché by audiences today, and even parodied in films like "Airplane!" (1980), the scene is very poignant in "Since You Went Away." Train stations are often associated with romance, and you couldn't ask for a more romantic goodbye scene than seeing your lover off at a train.

Back to the Future Part III

Train heists are a popular cinema trope, but according to Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), hijacking an 1885 steam train in " Back to the Future Part III " wasn't a stick-up but " a science experiment ." Regardless, this train scene ranks as one of the tensest action sequences in the trilogy. Needing to get the train up to 88 miles per hour so it can push the DeLorean time machine into the future, Doc develops his version of "Presto Logs" to provide the engine with enough power. Unfortunately, this means the engine will overheat and blow up in minutes.

That's not the only problem Doc and Marty (Michael J. Fox) need to deal with. After powering up the furnace, they make their way back to the DeLorean by climbing onto the roof of the  speeding train as it hurls toward an unfinished bridge . Unfortunately, Doc's girlfriend Clara (Mary Steenburgen) unknowingly boards the doomed train, forcing Doc to go back for her just as the furnace explodes.

Fortunately, Marty provides Doc with a last-second save by passing him a hoverboard, allowing Doc and Clara to fly to safety seconds before the train falls off the side of a ravine. That's not the last we see of Doc though. In the final scene, we learn Doc built a new  steam-powered locomotive time machine with the ability to fly. Where they're going, they won't need ... tracks.

Christopher Nolan's mind-bending film " Inception " delighted in playing with audience's minds. Taking place largely within a lucid dream where the normal rules of physics no longer apply, the film allowed the FX artists and set designers to truly test the limits of imagination.

After accepting a risky job to plant an idea deep within a powerful man's subconscious, professional dream thief Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his team of specialists craft a complex con involving military-developed shared dream technology. Unfortunately, Cobb has a bizarre problem — the guilt he feels over his wife's death causes a mental construct of her to manifest in his dreams and sabotage his missions. To the team's horror, "Dream Mal" (Marion Cotillard) makes her presence felt almost immediately after they arrive in their target's mind — by creating a  massive dream train smashes through a city street and rams their tax cab , nearly killing them all.

This isn't the only time we see a train scene in "Inception." Turns out the reason "Mal" used a train is because the real Mal and Cobb had once been trapped inside a dream world for the mental equivalent of decades. When Mal began seeing their dream as reality,  Cobb planted the idea that their world was an illusion — and woke them both up by allowing a train to run over them. Sadly, the idea of the world's unreality continued to infect Mal, and she later killed herself in real life, believing she was returning to her dream reality.

The Incredibles

" The Incredibles " gave us one of animation's best superhero families — but it all started with a massive train accident that completely destroyed the superhero community. When Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) meets up with his old enemy Bomb Voyage (Dominique Louis), it looks like the start of another one of their usual battles. But when Buddy Pine, an overzealous fan boy, gets in the way, an errant bomb winds up destroying a huge section of the city's elevated train tracks.

Mr. Incredible manages to stop the train from falling , but the resulting bad press from all the injured passengers forces all the public superheroes to go undercover. The fallout proves particularly devastating to Mr. Incredible who falls into depression and becomes an overweight shadow of his former self. Maybe he should have taken some lessons from Spider-Man. Everyone loved the webslinger after he saved a New York train from Doctor Octopus in "Spider-Man 2."

The Polar Express

Most of the films on this list only feature a train in one or two key sequences. " The Polar Express ," however, builds the entire premise of its movie around a train. Based off of the celebrated picture book by Chris Van Allsburg, "The Polar Express" follows a boy (Daryl Sabara) struggling to hold onto his belief in magic and Christmas. When a mysterious magic train appears in front of his house one night, the boy takes a leap of faith and climbs onboard, joining a bunch of children on their way to the North Pole.

What follows is a magical journey that's equal parts heartwarming movie and roller coaster ride. Those audiences lucky enough to see the film as it was meant to be seen in IMAX 3-D know the film is filled with scenes showing the train careening over icy hills,  sliding across frozen lakes , and generally executing feats only Santa Claus' train could perform. Then there are all the musical numbers being performed inside the diner cars as dancing waiters serve hot chocolate to the kids.

With the "Hero Boy" and "Hero Girl" as our viewpoint characters, we even get a peek at the inner workings of the train, including the engine and a spooky section occupied by a creepy (but friendly) ghost. If Christmas is defined by "scary ghost stories" and "tales of the glory," then it's no surprise that "The Polar Express" has become a regular Christmas movie for some families.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Let's be honest — if you could choose only one fantasy train to ride in, the Hogwarts Express would easily top the list. Originally only found in the pages of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books, audiences got to see the train on the big screen in " Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ."

Practically everything about the train is memorable, from the way young Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) manages to find his way to the hidden " Platform 9 ¾ " at London King's Cross Station to his first meeting with future best friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). Then there's the Trolley Witch (Jean Southern) who arrives mid-journey to offer magical confections like Chocolate Frogs and Cauldron Cakes to the young witches and wizards.

Still, the Wizarding World is dangerous, and Harry's encountered numerous dangers during his train rides. In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," he nearly gets the life sucked out of him by a dementor. Then in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," rival Draco Malfoy petrifies Potter when he spies on the Slytherin carriage.

Dangers aside, riding on the Hogwarts Express ranks high on the wish lists of many fans. This is why many travel to Scotland to board The Jacobite, the actual train used in the "Harry Potter" films , which journeys through many familiar sights from the movies. Just stay clear of the dementors.

The Lone Ranger

" The Lone Ranger " (2013) was a box office bomb and disappointed audiences. However, even the harshest critics couldn't help but admire the final chase scene where the Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) and Tonto (Johnny Depp) engage in one of the most  epic train battles in movie history .

The scene sees the Lone Ranger confront corrupt railroad tycoon Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson) and his henchman Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) during Cole's railroad union ceremony. Realizing Cole will use the mined silver on one of the trains to gain more power, Tonto steals the train. Simultaneously, the Lone Ranger pursues another train holding his love interest and her son captive.

What follows is an insanely over-the-top fight scene accompanied by the Lone Ranger's theme song, "The William Tell Overture." Highlights include the Lone Ranger's unusually intelligent horse Silver galloping over rooftops and leaping onto the top of the train to chase the bad guys. At one point, the hero catches a bullet thrown to him from a moving train, reloads his gun, and shoots the gun out of Cole's hand from half a mile away.

And just when it looks like Cole will get away, Tonto gleefully reveals they blew up a railroad bridge, causing the train to fall into the river and drown Cole beneath all his silver. Box office flop or not, this scene holds up remarkably well in repeat viewings.

5 best road trip movies, ranked

Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in Thelma and Louise.

Taking a road trip is one of the most fun things you could do if you want to experience freedom, adventure, and discovery. If you want to relieve that thrill of going on a road trip, some movies have captured its exhilarating experience.

Thelma and Louise (1991)

Little miss sunshine (2006), paris, texas (1984).

  • Y tu mamá también (2001)

Easy Rider (1969)

These films shine a light on the ups and downs of going on a road trip with loved ones — or even complete strangers. They take a look into what makes road trips so fun, whether it’s the dramatic moments of self-discovery, the high-octane action sequences, or the hilarious mishaps that make us laugh out loud. So, buckle up and take a look at our list of best road trip movies, from the indie drama Paris, Texas to hysterically tragic Little Miss Sunshine .

Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise is a movie about the feminist awakening of two friends. In it, Thelma, a stifled housewife yearning for freedom, embarks on a fishing trip with her friend Louise. What starts as a carefree escape takes a dramatic turn when Louise intervenes in a violent act, forcing them both on a desperate run from the law.

The film builds to a truly unforgettable finale, where Thelma and Louise, cornered by the law, make a shocking yet powerful choice. This blend of humor, drama, and action keeps viewers glued to the screen, making it a must-see for adventure seekers. But Thelma and Louise transcends a simple road trip movie. Its exploration of female empowerment and friendship adds depth, making it an enriching and poignant road trip movie to watch.

Watch Thelma and Louise on Amazon Prime Video .

In Little Miss Sunshine , the Hoover family goes on a cross-country trip to make sure young Olive gets to join the titular beauty pageant. But along the way, they go through entertaining hijinks and realizations, such as when their bus breaks down and they’re forced to push-start it, as well as Dwayne’s shattering realization that he’s actually colorblind.

It has an ensemble cast that includes Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, and Alan Arkin — all of whom deliver incredible performances. It’s a must-watch road trip movie as it chronicles the hilarious and chaotic journey of a dysfunctional family — which, let’s be honest, is unavoidable if you’re going on a long-haul travel with your family.

Watch Little Miss Sunshine on Hulu .

It’s not hard to see why the indie movie Paris, Texas won the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. Highlighting a story about reconciliation and vindication, Paris, Texas follows Travis Henderson, a man who returns from the unforgiving Texas desert after a self-imposed exile lasting four years. His path to healing includes taking his son and estranged wife Jane on a trip across the breathtaking yet desolate landscapes of the American Southwest.

A powerful moment in the film is the peep-show booth scene, where Travis lays bare all his regrets to Jane, showcasing the strength in human vulnerability. Paris, Texas takes its time, and with good reason: The deliberate pace allows the characters to develop organically. We witness their struggles firsthand and not through rushed exposition, which elevates the watching experience.

Watch Paris, Texas on HBO Max .

Y tu mamá también (2001)

Life is a highway, and for Julio and Tenoch in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también , it’s a bumpy one filled with laughter and heartbreak. This coming-of-age odyssey throws these two teenagers alongside the enigmatic Luisa headfirst into a whirlwind road trip across Mexico. Viewers should brace themselves for a story about youthful abandon clashing with harsh realities, as the main characters navigate self-discovery, sexual awakening, and the lessons life throws their way.

Y tu mamá también’ s story is both raw and tender, as Julio, Tenoch, and Luisa navigate the intricate web of their relationships. The film doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of growing up, resulting in an ending that will leave you pondering the complexities of friendship and self-discovery long after the credits roll.

Y tu mamá también is streaming on YouTube .

Easy Rider is a road trip movie that highlights the 1960s counterculture movement. In the movie, two bikers named Wyatt and Billy are on a mission to chase freedom across America. But their journey becomes a social commentary as they encounter a microcosm of American society — a lost soul on the road, a suspicious rancher, and the alcoholic lawyer George Hanson, played by an unforgettable Jack Nicholson .

Easy Rider doesn’t shy away from showcasing the breathtaking diversity of the American landscape — from scorching deserts to the lush countryside — with each frame amplifying the sense of an epic adventure. The soundtrack is also a time machine straight to the 1960s with music from The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, and Steppenwolf, creating an immersive viewing experience. This is a film that will have you questioning societal norms and pondering the true meaning of freedom.

Can you believe we're entering June? Last week's two Memorial Day releases, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Garfield, both underperformed at the box office, making it a disappointing start to the summer movie season. However, help could be on the way, as Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Inside Out 2 have the potential to be big hits in June.

The theaters are not the only place to watch movies this weekend. FAST services offer thousands of movies for free in the comfort of your home. All you need to do is sign up and watch some ads. Then, you're good to go. This weekend, consider watching these free movies, including a raunchy teen adventure, a sci-fi classic, and a Danish black comedy. EuroTrip (2004)

This week, Netflix is all about the Cumberbatches. Surely,it's not a coincidence that two shows starring Benedict Cumberbatch debuted in the same week. Eric is a Netflix original featuring Cumberbatch as a father who may be losing his mind after his son goes missing. Cumberbatch also stars in Patrick Melrose as a vulnerable man whose struggles with his personal demons may cost him his family.

In two weeks, Bridgerton season 3 will also reach its conclusion, but it's far from the only new programing in June. So check back every Friday morning as we update the best shows on Netflix soyou'll always have something new to watch on the weekend.

There are better times coming for Netflix this summer, but the first weekend of June is pretty quiet by streaming standards. Jennifer Lopez's sci-fi flick Atlas remains on top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. Even Madame Web is hanging around in the top five, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie is once again showing its dominance by climbing up the charts nearly seven months after arriving on Netflix.

This week's newcomers include Security, an action thriller starring Antonio Banderas that went largely unnoticed in 2017. But as we've seen many times before, Netflix subscribers flock to films that never hit it big in theaters. Our second new addition of the week is Butterfly in the Sky, a 2022 documentary about Reading Rainbow.

1 dead, 5 injured after three vehicle hit-and-run crash in Philadelphia

The first vehicle, the Nissan SUV, fled the scene. Police are still looking for the driver.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One person is dead and five others are injured after a three-car hit-and-run crash in Philadelphia's Holmesburg section on Friday night.

It happened around 9 p.m. near the intersection of State Road and Ashburner Street.

According to police, a silver Nissan SUV was traveling northbound on State Road when it made a left turn onto Ashburner Street.

While making the turn, the Nissan reportedly struck a black Honda that was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed.

The impact caused the Honda to strike a third vehicle, a black Ford Escape, before crashing into a utility pole.

The black Honda had three occupants, investigators say. A passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later identified the victim as 17-year-old Shibin Sony from Philadelphia.

The driver and another passenger were taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Authorities say there were also three occupants inside the black Ford Escape.

The driver and two passengers of that vehicle were taken to the hospital where they are in stable condition.

This is an ongoing investigation with the Crash Investigation Division. Anyone with information on the hit-and-run should contact the police immediately.
