friends on a road trip

What are some good road trip ideas?

If you’re looking for a fun way to spend some quality time with your family, a road trip is the perfect option. Not only does it allow you to explore new places, but it also provides the opportunity for some great bonding experiences.

To make sure your road trip is as enjoyable as possible, be sure to bring along some fun games and activities. Whether you’re looking for something to keep the kids busy or something that will get everyone laughing, we’ve got you covered.

So, grab some of the ideas we mentioned in the article above and hit the road! You’re in for a memorable adventure.

What is the most important thing you should consider before taking a road trip?

Arguably, the most important thing a person should consider before taking a road trip is if they have enough money. Make sure you have enough cash for gas, food, lodging, and any other emergencies that may come up.

That being said, a detailed budget for your trip is critical:

  • What is the average price of gas on your route?
  • How much are you budgeting for food each day?
  • How much will lodging cost each night?
  • What about “fun money” to spend on entertainment and extras?
  • How much are you setting aside in case of an emergency?

Spend time forming an in-depth budget for your trip so that you have a dependable estimation of what the total cost will be.

Nothing ruins a good road trip like running out of money!

If you happen to be traveling with kids who can’t get into some of the road trip questions, then try a road trip scavenger hunt. Use the scavenger hunt to spark conversations with younger kids.

Here are some ideas on how to use this road trip printable depending on age:

  • Laminate and simply use a dry erase marker to cross off each item you see.
  • Keep a tally of each item as you see it. First person to ten tally marks wins.
  • Play BINGO- first person to get three across or four vertically wins.
  • Divide the rows amongst players. First person to see all their items wins.

60 Road Trip Questions To Spark Conversations

Road trips with friends or family can be fun and exciting. One of the best parts of any road trip are the conversations, it helps everyone feel more connected.

However, there will be times where it becomes boring if you don’t have any conversation starters to keep it lively. Luckily (and sometimes unlucky), I have a husband who has an endless amount of random road trip questions to keep the conversation going.

This summer our family is planning on hitting the open road once more. We have already tackled a West Coast Road Trip and a Southern Coast trip , so this year we are planning on heading to the mountains. So, I decided to tap into my husband’s endless list of questions to give you some great ones to keep your road trip rolling along.

Going on a road trip is a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones. Whether you’re traveling with your partner, family, or friends, it’s important to have some interesting and engaging questions to keep the conversation flowing. Below we listed some road trip questions for couples, kids and families and other fun car ride questions to make your long road trip more enjoyable.

Technology is a major must have when on a two-week road trip with kids in tow.

Get-To-Know-Each Other Questions

Sometimes you go on a road trip and it has been a while since you have been around these people for long periods of time, so I like to use these thought-provoking road trip questions to get the conversation started.

  • Where do you want to be in 10 years?
  • Do you have any hobbies? What are they?
  • If you could live in any TV show home, which one would it be? (For example, The Simpsons or The Brady Bunch ?)
  • What superhero name would you pick for yourself?
  • What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been to?
  • What’s your favorite moment from your childhood?
  • Do you have any phobias?
  • What actor would you want to play you in a movie?
  • What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve done?
  • If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? This question can spark some interesting travel-related conversations and maybe even inspire your next adventure.
  • What’s the best camping experience you’ve had?
  • Have you ever cheated on a test? (My kids were way too honest on this question)
  • Where would you go for your dream vacation?
  • What are your top three favorite movies, and why?
  • Do you have a favorite family tradition?
  • What’s the most fun road trip you’ve ever been on? This question can lead to some great stories and memories.
  • Did you go outdoors often as a kid, or did you stay inside and play games instead?
  • Are you an early bird kind of person or a night owl?
  • What’s the best road trip you’ve had (besides this one)?

60 Fun Road Trip Questions

My husband and I travel a great deal for work and/or pleasure, so we are always on the look out for new and fun ways to entertain ourselves on those long road trips.  We live in deep south Texas, so any trip we make is a long one.  Traveling to San Antonio, Houston, Austin, or Dallas alone can range between 3 to 8 hrs on the road. Now those are just our Texas trips. We’ve also traveled to New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Louisiana by car, so any distraction whether it be a game, conversion, or music is welcomed in the hopes of  helping pass the time more painlessly.

In the Fall we will be making our way to Marathon, Texas (about an 8 hour trip) and this motivated me to create 60 FUN ROAD TRIP QUESTIONS.  Answering silly and light hearted questions is the perfect way to spend that time together. I have included questions like: Is there anything you would not do for a million dollars? What language do you wish you could speak fluently? If you could be any character in a TV sitcom, who would it be?

I know that these 60 questions won’t keep us entertained for all 8 hours, but it is a start.  I hope to add to this list, so be sure to keep an eye out for additional pages.

These are also a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night. Grab a glass of wine and start answering.

I do want to stress these question should be read out loud by the person NOT driving and please be safe on the road.

Liberals mock nightmare 'summertime fun' road trips as Tories propose vacation from carbon tax

What's the cost of this plan, asked Liberal Health Minister Mark Holland: 'Give up the future of the planet'

OTTAWA — A House of Commons debate Thursday featured the nightmare story of a 10-day, non-stop summer road trip (with no bathroom breaks) as Liberals and the Conservatives argued over how much money families could save with a vacation-season holiday from gas taxes.

Liberals mock nightmare 'summertime fun' road trips as Tories propose vacation from carbon tax Back to video

The House of Commons debated a Conservatives motion that the government scrap  the carbon tax, gas tax and GST on fuel until Labour Day, arguing it would give a break to Canadians who can’t afford anything more than a road trip in the current economy. The House will vote on the motion Monday.

In a press release, the Conservatives argued that given their proposed tax break, the average Canadian family could save $670 this summer with people in Alberta saving the most at $955 per family. The Liberals say the Conservatives have been promoting the savings by using exaggerated estimates for road-trip distances.

“Good news, kids. You could take a summer fun-time vacation, where you’re locked in a car for 10 consecutive days, non-stop with no bathroom breaks,” said Liberal Health Minister Mark Holland to shouts in the House . “And the Conservatives have a plan for you to have that summertime fun. And the cost? Give up the future of the planet.”

“Don’t worry about taking action on the planet,” he said. “Enjoy your 10 hours in the car and let the planet burn.”

Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer asked the Liberals to support the proposal.

“For many families, the best hope for a summer vacation will be a modest road trip. Parents will sketch out a budget based on meals and hotels, and a big expense will be fuel,” he said during question period. “Conservatives have proposed taking the tax off of gas and diesel for the summer, saving Canadians $0.35 a litre. “Will the Prime Minister vote for our motion, or will he force more Canadians to stay home this summer?”

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault responded to Scheer by mocking the Conservatives’ savings estimates.

“Mr. Speaker, this is a prime cut of Conservative baloney. I know what I am talking about; my dad was a butcher,” he said. “The savings that the Conservative Party of Canada claims for Albertans is based on people travelling 37,000 kilometres during their holidays.”

Guilbeault noted that 37,000 kilometres would be enough to travel from the North Pole to the South Pole, with Holland adding his depiction of a nightmarishly long road trip.

Scheer said the Liberals resistance to the proposed savings is further sign the prime minister is out of touch.

“To the prime minister’s wealthy friends, that might not seem like a lot of money, but to struggling Canadians, that can make the difference in saying yes to kids when they ask for some summertime fun,” he said. “Will the prime minister have an ounce of compassion and help more Canadian families afford a vacation?”

The Liberals came to their 37,000-kilometre figure this way: The cost of the carbon tax, GST and federal exercise tax adds up to $0.29 per litre of gas. If you removed all those taxes, as the Conservatives call for, an Albertan famlily would need 3,293 litres of fuel to save $955.

The Liberals then assumed an average gas mileage of 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres and came up with 37,000 kilometres on the road. Enough for four round trips between Mexico City and Alberta or twice the distance of the world’s longest flight between New York and Singapore.

But the Conservatives came to their figure a different way, using not just the cost of filling up, but all the other ways the carbon tax impacts Canadians wallets.

They relied on figures from the parliamentary budget officer (PBO) on the overall cost of the carbon tax to Canadians. PBO Yves Giroux has done several reports on the carbon tax and found that the overall cost of the carbon tax is higher than the rebates Canadians receive back.

While the PBO has acknowledged most people pay less directly in carbon taxes than they receive in rebates, he has argued the tax has indirect costs that filter through the economy, lowering incomes of people who work in carbon-heavy industries and adding costs to groceries and other bills. He recently said some of his figures are in need of a correction, due to an inadvertent error, but he yet to provide new figures and has said they won’t change his overall conclusions.

The Conservatives’ carbon tax summer holiday proposal relies on the PBO’s findings. The PBO found the complete cost, including the direct taxes and the broader costs of the carbon tax cost the average Albertan household $911 this year, after including the Canada Carbon Rebates payments that average $2,032 per family this year.

The Conservatives left the rebates out of the equation entirely and found the overall cost to an Albertan family this year would be $2,943, they then prorated that for their 106 days of carbon tax holiday and found Albertans would save $853 this summer.

They also added in prorated savings for removing gas taxes and GST to achieve their $955 figure.

Another billionaire plans to visit the Titanic in a submersible to prove it can be done safely, reports say

(Gray News) – Another billionaire is planning a trip to the Titanic wreckage in a submersible after five people were killed in the OceanGate Titan disaster last June.

Billionaire real estate mogul Larry Connor is teaming up with Patrick Lahey, co-founder and president of Triton Submarines , for the next trip to the Titanic, according to multiple outlets.

Lahey has spent years working to make submersibles safe for deep dives and has visited the deepest parts of the ocean.

Lahey told the Wall Street Journal that a few days after the OceanGate tragedy, he got a call from Connor, who was determined to create another expedition to the Titanic that would prove it could be done safely.

Connor, who is worth about $2 billion according to Forbes , is the head of The Connor Group , a luxury apartment building investor. He has also previously visited deep parts of the ocean and outer space.

According to BBC , Connor and Lahey plan to use a two-person submersible made of acrylic that can safely reach 13,000 feet. The Titanic wreckage sits 12,500 feet under the ocean. The OceanGate Titan submersible only had a range of just under 4,300 feet, according to CBS News .

Connor and Lahey have not said when they plan to take their trip to the Titanic.

Notre Dame mailbag: Will Irish be ready for this SEC road trip? Riley Leonard’s stats?

EL PASO, TEXAS - DECEMBER 29: Head coach Marcus Freeman of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish looks on during warmups before the start of the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game between the Fighting Irish and the Oregon State Beavers at Sun Bowl Stadium on December 29, 2023 in El Paso, Texas. (Photo by Sam Wasson/Getty Images)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — With the college football season less than 100 days out, the Notre Dame mailbag returns to assess road venues, Riley Leonard statistics and if the sport’s changes have dented enthusiasm for it.

Let’s get started.

(Note: Submitted questions have been lightly edited for clarity and length.)

The last time Notre Dame played an SEC team on the road, Brian Kelly underestimated the task and the team racked up six false-start penalties. What are Marcus Freeman and company doing to prepare for the atmosphere in College Station on Aug. 31? I’ll go out on a limb and predict it will be loud and unfriendly to quarterback clap cadences. — Lamine H.

As raucous as Texas A&M’s Kyle Field might be, Freeman took Notre Dame to Ohio Stadium two years ago and managed the environment just fine. The offense didn’t produce much, but it wasn’t because Tyler Buchner couldn’t get snaps off because of crowd noise. The Irish committed just two offensive penalties all game, both on wide receivers. Lorenzo Styles had a 1-yard false start close to Notre Dame’s goal line and Matt Salerno got flagged for pass interference, hauling down a defensive back on an overthrown pass. That’s it.

Buchner had little issue running the offense pre-snap, and the staff praised him publicly and privately afterward for handling the moment. As much as his career took detours from there, how Buchner managed Ohio State in his first career start looked just fine. The Buckeyes were just miles better.

Spin that forward to Leonard, who will make his 22nd career start when Notre Dame heads to Texas A&M. Notre Dame may have issues at tackle, although it’s not like Joe Alt and Blake Fisher were ultra-experienced in Columbus two years ago. Regardless, the Irish should have no reason to repeat the screwup against Georgia in Athens five years earlier. That was an operational failure, something Freeman has already avoided in a huge spot. The Irish will swallow a couple of false starts versus the Aggies . It shouldn’t be go beyond that.

Ditch the clap, stick with the leg lift for the quarterback, don’t make this more complicated than it needs to be. And that’s on top of the addition of helmet communication for Leonard with offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, another layer that should help road teams in big environments.

Over/under for Riley Leonard’s stats this season: Completion rate: 63.5 percent Yards per attempt: 8.9 Passing yardage: 2,689 Passing touchdowns: 24 Interceptions: 8

Those just happen to be Sam Hartman ’s stats last year. — James R.

New quarterback, new playbook, new offensive coordinator … it all makes it hard to compare Leonard this year to Hartman last year. But Notre Dame should hit over on completion percentage, passing yardage and passing touchdowns* at a minimum. Yards per attempt might be hard to beat. Throwing fewer interceptions shouldn’t be too high a hurdle.

Maybe the more applicable comparison for Leonard’s first year in Denbrock’s offense is to Jayden Daniels’ first year in Denbrock’s offense at LSU . Yes, the personnel is much different at wide receiver. But it’s not like Daniels flashed a ton of Heisman Trophy potential in 2022. In these same categories, Daniels completed 68.6 percent of his passes for 7.5 yards/attempt, 2,913 yards, 17 passing touchdowns and three interceptions.

The category that misses the bigger picture is passing touchdowns, hence the asterisk above, because it doesn’t include Leonard’s threat on the ground, something Hartman didn’t have. Leonard rushed for 13 touchdowns in his full season as a starter. Hartman put up three last season. And Daniels had 11 rushing touchdowns in his first season with Denbrock before becoming Audric Estime with an arm last fall.

Put it another way, Leonard doesn’t need to throw for 30 touchdowns this season, but Notre Dame needs him to post at least that many total touchdowns. In the past 10 years, Notre Dame’s starting quarterback (or its combination of starting quarterbacks) has hit 30 total touchdowns six times, topped by Everett Golson’s 37 total touchdowns in 2014.

Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator that season?

Mike Denbrock.

It’s the offseason, so when Notre Dame has a road game, what is your process in preparing for that trip? Do you stay in or near the team hotel? How far ahead of time do you scout the restaurant/bars that you may hit? I would assume your free time is pretty limited, but do you have go-to places to visit for the cities Notre Dame travels to on the regular? — Kenny G.

This is a very important question!

I’ve already booked Texas A&M and will be staying in College Station. First time there, two nights, all recommendations welcome. Everything else will get booked later.

In terms of staying at the team hotel or close by, I almost never do. The football program sees enough of me as is without wandering around the lobby of a nondescript Marriott outside Greenville or Syracuse, which were the last two road trips where I overlapped with Notre Dame in location. You get a few “what are you doing here?” looks when that happens.

As for scouting restaurants for the night before games, this is serious business among a few beat reporters. It requires intense summer research. Sometimes you end up at 610 Magnolia in Louisville for an all-time dinner out. Sometimes you find an old standby at the Angus Barn before NC State or Duke. Staying in the Westdrift hotel in Manhattan Beach has been a standard during the past five trips to USC. It should be six this November.

You’re correct that time is limited while covering Notre Dame road games, unless it’s a primetime kickoff. So those Friday nights are meticulously planned to make sure the other great part about covering road games (the best part is still the game, obviously) goes well. No false starts.

Will Notre Dame land Derek Meadows? — Tim B.

Yes. The Irish have the five-star receiver’s attention in spite of the passing game the past few seasons. This year Notre Dame should be able to close on Meadows because of it

A lot of changes to the sport and to Notre Dame. I have heard older generations say things like it’s ruining the game and they’re less interested. On the other hand, I hear college kids finally getting a small sliver of the overall financial value they bring to a university/TV network.

I’m wondering from the 20-year seat you sit in … do you think college football and Notre Dame are more or less likable now or before? Likely different answers for both, but I’m curious if the overall connection and endearment to the sport and Notre Dame is better or worse. — Jonathan G.

Less likable but more interesting is probably a good way to put it for now.

The combination of unfettered player movement and unfettered school movement among conferences has been a disaster for a sport that does best leaning into nostalgia. The reason Notre Dame and plenty of other programs hold prestige today has nothing to do with what happened last season and everything to do with what happened 20, 30 and 40 years ago. That history is a collective memory. And the sport’s upheaval severs so much of connective tissue. Even if the changes are good for the individuals, they’re bad for a sport built on tradition. No one wins when the Pac-12 dies, other than television networks.

Side note, none of this has anything to do with name, image and likeness (NIL). Players being compensated shouldn’t impact the enjoyment in watching them on Saturdays. Kyle Hamilton ’s second interception at Florida State , Benjamin Morrison ’s pick six against Clemson , Xavier Watts’ humbling of Caleb Williams — did you really enjoy those any less because the players were getting paid? Hope not, even if you’re not in love with NIL. Same will soon apply to revenue sharing after news this week of the House settlement that may allow Notre Dame (and other schools) to share roughly $20 million per year with athletes.

go-deeper

NCAA, Power 5 approve settlement making way for players to be directly paid

I’m interested to see how the 12-team College Football Playoff ages as it likely expands to 14 teams. How long does the novelty last? Does college football get lost in the NFL ’s postseason calendar? Do more teams simply judge their seasons as successes by making the CFP or as failures when they don’t? And how quickly does just making the CFP become not enough for schools outside Georgia, Ohio State and Alabama?

In my 24 years on the beat, college football has never been more interesting than it is right now. And I’m not sure I’ve ever liked it less during that same timeframe. These are strange times for a sport that could have mitigated so many of these problems. Instead, it’s living with them. And paying for them.

There is a good-old-days-aren’t-coming-back vibe about college football, which makes you long for the sport you grew up watching. There’s no cognitive dissonance required to be excited for Ohio State at Oregon being a Big Ten game and Alabama at Oklahoma being an SEC game, never mind NBC potentially picking up Notre Dame at USC because it’s in the Big Ten package. You can enjoy those games, even if you wish they weren’t played under these circumstances.

Do you think Notre Dame’s current NIL operation and team chemistry under Freeman makes it effectively transfer-proof for top-line starters?

Beyond losing some depth pieces, Notre Dame retained all key players. I had some concern that teams with a lot of turnover this offseason (Alabama, Michigan, Washington) might make a run at some key starters, but that never panned out. — Jonathan T.

For starters, I wouldn’t assume one of the teams you mentioned didn’t make a run at one of Notre Dame’s frontline players. Just because the Irish didn’t lose anybody doesn’t mean another program wasn’t interested.

But to your point, you’re mostly correct. Notre Dame’s NIL operation has been focused primarily on retention, i.e. not only keeping the roster together among the players who could transfer out, but also almost keeping the roster together among the players who could have declared for the draft. Losing Alt and Fisher hurt, but retaining mid- or late-round picks like Howard Cross III , Jack Kiser , Rylie Mills and Watts is NIL in action. If you’re going to get paid to play football, Notre Dame should invest in players who want to play at Notre Dame and can help Notre Dame win now. If Notre Dame (let’s consider “Notre Dame” as the school, athletic department, football program and collective together) can offer a package that’s in line with what a mid-round or late-round pick (or a practice squad player) would make in the NFL, it should do it. And based on the return from last year’s roster, that’s what Notre Dame is doing.

Culture has a say here too, because NIL money takes you only so far. Ultimately, the players have to want to play in college for this roster maneuver to make sense. A player returning to school with one foot out the door won’t yield the ROI a team thinks it’s getting. To put a face on it, if Fisher was convinced to come back to Notre Dame purely by NIL but wanted to be in the NFL, the Irish wouldn’t get a full return on that. Fisher probably wouldn’t either.

There’s a lot of talk about “what NIL was supposed to be” or “true NIL” in the media spaces. It’s usually coded language for the idealistic idea of NIL as players running summer camps or putting out a merch line. But your true NIL is simply what the market will bear. And Notre Dame is paying market value to keep its roster together.
