Who are the Tour de France commentators? – Rouleur

David Millar

July 05, 2022

Find out who’s behind the mic and reporting on the ground for the respective Tour de France broadcasters

The Tour de France is cycling’s biggest event and transcends the everyday fans of the sport to reach millions of people around the world.

Because of the level of interest, TV channels up their coverage and provide wall-to-wall live broadcast of the race as well as in-depth highlights programmes and analysis.

That enhancement of coverage includes recruiting the sport’s top commentators and pundits to scrutinise the goings on in the race, but who are the people behind the voices we hear every day on television?

ITV Tour de France commentators

ITV has been a long-time broadcaster of the Tour de France on free-to-air television in the UK, and their line-up of commentators has been set for some time.

–  Tour de France 2022 route: everything you need to know about the 109th edition – Tour de France standings: the latest results from the race – Tour de France favourites: who will win this year’s yellow jersey?

Commentary veteran Phil Liggett and the late Paul Sherwen provided commentary from a US feed up until 2016, when ITV brought in their own commentators. Journalist (and Rouleur columnist) Ned Boulting took over the mic along with former British pro and four-time Tour de France stage winner David Millar, and the pair have been working on the Tour for ITV ever since.

Two-time British champion Peter Kennaugh works as a pundit on ITV, analysing the racing alongside another former pro and three-time Tour stage winner Chris Boardman and host Gary Imlach.

ITV also send reporters to work on the ground at the Tour. Author and journalist Daniel Friebe provides colour segments for the highlights programme as well interviewing riders pre- and post-stage. Another author and journalist Matt Rendall provides interviews and on the ground from the Tour as well.

Eurosport/GCN Tour de France commentators

In the UK, Global Cycling Network have upped the ante after launching their online race streaming platform in 2020. Since being acquired by Discovery, subsequently part of  Warner Bros. Discovery, the GCN and Eurosport coverage has converged and now holds pre-race and post-race shows every day, as well as start-to-finish coverage without adverts (on streaming).

In the commentary box is a mix of Eurosport veterans…

Inside the life of a Tour de France team doctor

Inside the life of a Tour de France team doctor

Long hours, emergency post-crash assessments and making snap decisions about a rider’s racing fate: all in a day’s work for EF Education-EasyPost’s director of medicine and sports science, Dr Kevin Sprouse

The Tour de France is intense. The pinnacle of many pro cyclists’ careers, let alone seasons, the race attracts the world’s attention unlike any other event in the WorldTour calendar. This pressure isn’t solely felt amongst the riders, though. Behind each eight-strong team lies a group of support staff whose job is to make sure they’re able to get to Paris in one piece, while also juggling sponsors, media and fans.

“We've got staff members who don't like it – it's too high-strung. But I kind of like it,” says EF Education-EasyPost’s director of medicine and sports science, Dr Kevin Sprouse. “I'm board-certified and practice both emergency and sports medicine, so compared to my time in the ER, the Tour de France seems pretty benign in terms of stress load.”

He has “between 15-20” Grand Tours and nine Tours de France under his belt during his 12 years with the team, proving it’s clearly a situation he thrives in. But aside from the obvious (responding to a crash), what does a team race doctor actually fill their days with? From assessing rider’s metrics before the racing has even got underway to being on hand at all hours if they have any niggles or queries, Dr Sprouse shares the average Tour de France for a team doctor…

Pre-race assessment

EF Education-EasyPost have two team doctors during a Grand Tour; each will do a two-week stint, swapping positions and trading notes on the first rest day. In addition to the first nine stages of racing, the first block includes the week before the first stage is even underway and is used by the doctors to assess the health of the riders.

“There's a lot of catching up with the riders on how they're doing – How do they feel? Are they fresh? Are they tired? We'll then use metrics from the laboratory, [wearable fitness tracker] Whoop, and training files to get a combination of subjective and objective assessments that we can compare. We want to see that there's concordance between the two – they say they're fresh, they look fresh, the metrics are there. If they're diametrically opposed, then we have to step back.”

“I don't think there's often a conscious decision to hide an illness but typically there's a bit of a pressure to say, ‘I feel great, I'm riding great’, and what happens is they downplay.” Riders would occasionally turn up with head colds or sniffles, but “in the Covid world, people take that a bit more seriously so we haven't seen as much of that in the last two years.”

sprecher tour de france

Ultimately, the decision of whether a rider will start the Tour is taken by the team’s head director, Charlie Wegelius, but “he’s very good at seeking input from everyone involved”.

Life on the road

While the Tour coverage only lasts for between four-to-five hours a day, the shift of the team doctor often extends beyond three times that.

After waking at 6am, Dr Sprouse makes a coffee, reads and goes for a run “so that I can have a little time to myself”. From 7:30am, he’s on hand in case anti-doping testers arrive at the hotel unannounced: “Having done it for years, you know that's when they're coming so they can get the cortisol levels at a certain time. I want to be there because that's one of my roles is to chaperone the rider through that process, even though they're perfectly comfortable doing it.”

Assuming there’s no random control, he’ll have breakfast with the other staff and linger as the riders come down so he can check in with how they’re feeling. He’ll collect urine samples from outside their rooms to check hydration status to see if they need to drink a little extra. He also goes through each rider’s Whoop dashboard to make sure they’re getting enough sleep and not “staying up too late watching Netflix or calling friends on WhatsApp” before gathering up his bags and medical kit.

Dr Sprouse carries two medical bags – a big case on the bus and a smaller one in the car – and is prepared for anything that can come up. “In [my small bag], I’ve got a little bit of everything – electrolytes, an inhaler for any rider that has asthma, medication in case somebody’s got a sour stomach, paracetamol, stuff to clean and bandage a wound, even stuff to do stitches and staples.”

sprecher tour de france

After dinner, it’s a case of making the rounds – ”stopping by rider’s rooms and seeing if any concerns came up during the day” – before bedding down himself between 10-11pm. “My family is usually back home in the US, so that's the time I get back and do face time with kids and talk to my wife.”

Even if there isn’t a serious incident that requires a hospital visit, his days are long and require him to always be on call. While he’s not riding 160km-plus stages day after day, there’s still a build-up of fatigue that could affect his performance. How does he cope?

“I've been very big on the idea that, as staff, we have to take care of ourselves to be able to give our best to the riders and the job that we have to do. You now see more of the staff taking personal time during the day. If we're in a beautiful mountain town, I may go for a hike or sit by a river. Sometimes we're in an industrial park on the outskirts of some industrial city, so then I maybe go for a run or sit and read a book. It sounds very zen but it's just getting outside and being away for a minute and it's really worthwhile.”

First responder

When there is a crash in the peloton, riders will often brush themselves down and continue, albeit with the loss of some lycra and the addition of some road rash. But on more serious falls, Dr Sprouse will be on hand to provide medical attention.

“If it occurs in the peloton, and we're right behind them [in a team car] then [we’ll be at the scene in] 30 seconds or a minute depending on our location. I'll quickly assess them and figure out if they're good to get back on the bike – frequently they are.”

The initial distinction he makes on the road is “is this injury dangerous?”. “A lot of injuries are just painful and if they want to ride through it. We'll support them with appropriate pain medications – some paracetamol, some Advil [ibuprofen] – and tape it appropriately and do everything we can to keep them in the game.”

He believes that road cyclists inherently “have probably the highest suffer threshold of any sport”. He points to Lawson Craddock’s 2018 ride as a case in point. “On the first day, he crashed pretty badly, fractured his [shoulder blade], and rode the entire Tour. It was a good injury – he was pretty beat up.”

But what if he determines that the injury is dangerous? “There’s no discussion – that’s it, they’re out”. Concussion is a common example but “can be a bit of a hard sell” because it’s not that visible, while other, smaller injuries that affect bike handling can spell the end of a rider’s Tour. “There may be an injury to a hand that’s not that impressive, but we determine that the rider couldn’t break if he needed to, so we’re not putting him in the peloton with everyone else.”

Seven key French expressions to help you understand Le Tour de France

The 100-year-old annual bicycle race has long-standing traditions and even its own vocabulary.

sprecher tour de france

The Tour de France - la Grande Boucle - has returned!

The world-famous bicycle race crossed from Italy on July 2, bringing along with it a complex terminology developed across a century of races.  We look at seven French terms to help you understand it.

Read more: Tour de France 2024: day-by-day route tracker

We will start with le peloton , the main pack of riders. This dates back to the 1600s when it was used to refer to a small body of soldiers.

By the 1850s it had developed into a group of sporting competitors and shortly after it became exclusively used for cyclists.

Rouler en chasse-patate

If you are riding between two groups, the breakaway leaders and the peloton , you are on a potato hunt, rouler en chasse-patate .

La danseuse

If you are trying to gain ground while on a steep ascent then the chances are you are doing la danseuse -  pedalling standing up.

Les domestiques

While team captains might be the stars of the show, their team-mates are described as mere servants, domestiques , support riders whose main aim is to protect their leader from the competition and help him conserve energy for vital moments in the race.

À bloc / une échappée

If you are riding all out, as hard and fast as possible, you are going à bloc , presumably to break away from the rest of the group, une échappée (literally an escape).

Maillot jaune / vert / blanc / à pois

Then there are the jerseys with the most coveted being the maillot jaune (worn by the overall tour leader).

The maillot vert belongs to the best sprinter, the maillot blanc for the best rider under 25 and the stand-out fashion item on any race, the very fetching maillot à pois (polka dots) for best climber.

La lanterne rouge

However, there is also recognition for the rider who comes last. He is la lanterne rouge , followed not too far behind by the broom car.

The tour is about 45 minutes, and there are no stairs on the tour route. The tour includes 4 free beer samples for adults 21+ with ID, and unlimited soda samples for all. Why cant we bring our beverages on tour? And why are we wearing these crazy hair nets? Great questions! First, because you look cool. No but really, while beer is NOT considered a food product by the FDA, soda is a food product. That means we adhere to the same safety protocols that a factory producing your food does. This is great for all, employees as well as our guests and customers. This ensures a high-quality product that is safe and regulated for quality, safety and consistency. SQF Certification: The highest level of this standard. While the FDA requires a certain level of safety standards, we have the highest level you can receive. SQF. Many big box stores require that the products they sell come from an SQF facility. We employ people that JUST focus on this certification. READ MORE ABOUT SQF HERE.  Fun Facts: Average amount of full semi’s leaving Sprecher Daily: 10 Employees 1985 – 5 2019 – 55 2023 – 140 2024 - 175 This includes brewers, biologists, food scientists, safety experts, semi drivers, bartenders, designers and more! How many hours a day do the canning and bottling lines run? 5am-Midnight 19 hours a day/4 Days a week  (Monday-Thursday). That means the canning and bottling lines DO NOT run on weekends - but they sure are fun to look at. **Want to see the bottling line in action? Thursday is your day - but be warned, 365 bottles a minute can be loud.  You may book day-of at the brewery, but tour spots are first come, first served, so we recommend reserving ahead of time. Children aged 5 and under are free. Adults $12.00 ($15 on Saturdays), minors (under 21) $5.00 ($7 on Saturdays). Your online reservation can be cancelled or changed up to 48 hours in advance of your tour. No refunds are available within 48 hours prior to tour time. While you may not be planning to drink alcohol, pricing will not change for adults. The ticket price is based on the experience and capacity and the sampling is complimentary. Didn’t use all your sample tickets? Trade in two (2) wristband tabs for a drink token to use on your next visit. Good for one (1) free draft beverage in the Taproom. No cash value. Please be aware that Saturdays are our busiest day of the week. If you prefer more room and less noise, we suggest Friday or Sunday tours for weekend dates. Our production does not run in the factory Friday-Sunday.  All tables are first come first served and no reservations are taken. If you have a group of 12 or more, please reach out to [email protected] to make any special arr angements after booking your tour online. FAQ Q: Do I have to purchase a ticket for very young children? A: Children that will be sitting on a lap DO NOT need a ticket. All other minors will require a ticket. Q: Do my unused sample tickets have cash value? A: Unused sample tickets cannot be used another day, in exchange for product, or refunded.  Q: Can minors drink at Sprecher with adult / parent supervision? A: Sprecher will not serve alcohol to minors under any circumstances. Parents and guardians cannot give permission. Any person or persons supplying alcohol to a minor will be asked to leave without refund.  Q: Can I bring outside food or drink? Can I eat or drink on the tour? A: Sprecher does NOT allow outside food. We have a functioning snack kitchen on site! There is no eating or drinking on the tour (not to worry, you have plenty of time for both)

Instructions for your Brewery Tour

When you arrive for your brewery tour, park in the lot on the West side of the main building, 701 W Glendale Avenue, Glendale WI. Check in for the tour at the gift shop front desk to receive your tour wristbands and FREE commemorative tour glass, then wait in the beer garden for the tour guide to announce the beginning of your tour. Enjoy your brewery tour, take photos and tag us on social media @sprecherbrewery with hashtag #BrewGoodThings! Sprecher Brewing Company has been manufacturing hand-crafted top quality craft beverages for nearly forty years. To keep our manufacturing processes aligned with our food safety and quality standards consumers have come to expect, we recently have made some changes to our tours. Given the nature, size, and shape of our facilities, only service animals trained or in training to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability are permitted on tours. We cannot allow other dogs, pets, or animals, including those whose sole function is to provide comfort, emotional support, companionship, or therapy. In order to protect the livelihood or our employees and to keep the manufacturing process fully functional, tour areas will be limited in nature and there will be no interactive participation in manufacturing. Rest assured, there are plenty of interactive exhibits and games in the taproom and guests will still receive the Sprecher tour experience. In addition, guests will be able to view high quality video showing an up and close never seen before soda manufacturing point of view. Sprecher is also asking that all guests comply with the following precautions:  1. Do not visit if you are feeling ill or have recently tested positive for COVID-19, flu, or any other communicable disease.  2. Food and drinks are not allowed on tours. Please enjoy all snacks and beverages in the tap room.  3. Please do not touch anything in the production facility.  4. Hair restraints must be worn during the tour.  5. Dogs are not allowed. 6. Smoking or tobacco is not allowed. 7. Pictures and videos inside the production facility are not allowed.

Tour de France 2024: How to Watch a Free Livestream

Your guide to watching the 111th edition of the world's most iconic bike race, including all the teams, stages and full schedule.

sprecher tour de france

Get set for three intense weeks of calf-shredding climbs and nail-biting sprints as the world's best riders take on the 111th Tour de France.

The first four stages of this year's race all begin in Italy, while there's a huge break with tradition with the final stage taking place in Nice rather than Paris for the first time ever due to the Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in the French capital.

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is joined by fellow yellow jersey frontrunners Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, Remco Evenepoel, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel on one of the strongest start lists of recent years.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  to use to watch the the Tour de France live wherever you are in the world.

Tour de France 2024: Where and when is it?

The Tour de France begins with Stage 1 in Florence on Saturday, June 29, and ends with a tradition-breaking passage from Monaco to Nice on Sunday, July 21.

A full schedule for this year's event can be found below.

How to watch the Tour de France online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the Tour locally, you may need a different way to watch the world's greatest cyclists -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on race day by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Looking for other options? Be sure to check out some of the other great  VPN deals  taking place right now.

That's the equivalent of $6.67 a month with code  SPECIALDEAL , which should be automatically applied.

Quick tips for streaming Tour de France 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the Tour de France live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the game after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .
