Murree tourism police launched to facilitate visitors.

punjab tourism police

RAWALPINDI: Murree Tourism Police was on Saturday launchedto facilitate and protect tourists in the resort station on the instructions of the inspector general of police (IGP), Punjab.

Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi Ashfaq Ahmad Khan and City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Omar Saeed Malik inaugurated the tourism police at Lower Topa.

The tourism police initially included 150 officers and personnel, a special tourist van, three specially prepared vehicles, 25 motorcycles and a horse riding squad.

Police officials said the tourism police was launched after the Murree tragedy of January 8, 2022. The police will initially be deployed at places in Murree where there is an unusual rush of tourists and snowfall creates difficulties for them.

In the next phase, the police would be stationed at tourist spots in Kotli Sattian.

Force initially includes 150 police officers, personnel

“Following the success of the pilot project, tourism police will also be launched in other tourist destinations of Punjab such as Katas Raj, Nankana and Fort Monroe,” said RPO Khan while addressing the function.

He said the basic aim of the tourism police was to facilitate tourists and protect them.

Speaking on the occasion, CPO Malik said the tourism police had been launched for the convenience of tourists.

He said safety and convenience of tourists was top priority of the Rawalpindi police and the tourism police would perform duties round the clock.

In case of an emergency, the tourism police could be approached through its helpline of 1757, he said.

“A campaign will also be launched for awareness and guidance of tourists. Implementation of the SOPs will be ensured in all cases to ensure smooth flow of traffic during holidays,” he said.

Police officers, local administration officers, bar officials, civil society and mediapersons attended the inauguration of the tourism police.

SP Kohsar Haider Ali and SHOs of Murree, Patriata and Pahguari were awarded certificates of appreciation for their outstanding performance in setting up the tourist force.

After the Murree tragedy when 22 people died in vehicles trapped in snow, an investigation committee recommended formation of the tourism force to protect and facilitate the tourists.

It recommended that a joint management committee under the co-convenorship of the deputy commissioner and station commander, Pakistan Army, may be set up for Murree to implement upgradation and master plan. Safe city infrastructure may also be established in Murree.

However, the former government failed to implement the recommendations about the Safe City infrastructure in Murree.

A senior official of the district administration said the newly-formed government under the leadership of Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz would soon launch a new project to install security cameras on all the main roads of the hill station.

Pakistan deploys special Tourism Police Force for security of Kartarpur pilgrims

Pakistan's Punjab police on Thursday deployed a 100-member strong special 'Tourism Police Force' for the security of the Indian pilgrims visiting the Kartarpur corridor on a daily basis from Saturday when it will be opened by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"A batch of 100 Tourism Police Force has been deployed to look after Sikh pilgrims and their security," Punjab police spokesperson Niyab Haider Naqvi told PTI on Thursday. He said more policemen are undergoing training and they will also join the first batch in coming days.

Similarly, the Pakistan Rangers have increased the number of personnel deployed at the corridor for security reasons.

"The Rangers have deployed more personnel at the corridor ahead of its formal opening on Saturday to ensure fool-proof security," an official told PTI. He said the visiting Sikh pilgrims will be restricted to the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib and the rangers and police will ensure a complete security in and around the corridor and the gurdwara.

Pakistan army spokesman Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor also said that no Indian pilgrims visiting Darbar Sahib through the corridor will be allowed to move an inch from the restricted area.

Meanwhile, different departments of the Pakistan government held a meeting here on Thursday to finalise arrangements for the historic opening of the corridor on Saturday afternoon. The Gurdwara Darbar Sahib was also cleaned on Thursday for the occasion.

"All arrangements to greet the Sikh pilgrims and other guests coming here on the opening of the corridor have been finalised. We have made sure that the visiting pilgrims face no problem rather they cherish it as their memorable visit," Amir Hashmi, spokesperson of the Evacuee Trust Property Board which looks after the minority holy places in the country, told PTI.

"On Thursday we took a good number of Sikhs arrived here on visa to the Kartarpur Sahib where they performed their religious rituals, he added. Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee pardhan (president) Sardar Sarojeet Singh was also among the visiting pilgrims.

"On the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak the opening of the Kartarpur Sahib is the most beautiful thing for the Sikhs," Singh said. He said the visiting Sikhs cannot explain their happiness in words.

The Inter-Services Public Relations - the media wing of the army - and the Press Information Department have made arrangements for transporting the local and Indian journalists to the corridor on Saturday morning.

On Prime Minister Khan's statement about waiving USD 20 service charge from Indian pilgrims using the corridor and passport condition, the Pakistan Foreign Office on Thursday clarified the government's position.

"Pakistan government has waived off three requirements for Sikh pilgrims coming to Kartarpur on Baba Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary," Foreign Office spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said.

"The Indian Sikh pilgrims will no longer have to carry their passports till one year, no registration is required 10 days prior to their arrival, the USD 20 service charge per pilgrim per visit on November 9 and 12 will also be waived, he added.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh is part of a jatha (delegation) that will pay obeisance at the gurudwara in Pakistan.

Set up tourist police, Union tourism ministry tells states & UTs

In 2019, about 11 million tourists came to India, which dipped to a mere 1. 5 million in 2021; the outbreak playing a major role in the slump. Many are pestered, harassed and cheated during their travels and don’t know whom to approach immediately for remedy. A tourist police, located in all important tourist spots, can make them feel safer and better. When a happy tourist returns home, he or she serves as the most reliable publicist for a country. All states should emulate the Rajasthan model. They will benefit individually and India collectively.
