Plettenberg Bay, or "Plett" to the locals, is a stunning beach town that sits along South Africa's Garden Route . The Garden Route is a scenic drive that runs for hundreds of kilometers along the southwestern coast of the country. Plett is one of its crown jewels.
It's difficult to not be completely enchanted by Plettenberg Bay. Upon arrival, you'll be treated to a charming, hilly seaside town with white sandy beaches, shimmering turquoise water, rolling green mountains, and things to do for all kinds of travelers.

You can't come to Plettenberg Bay and not visit the Robberg Nature Reserve . A World Heritage Site (and rightly so), Robberg Nature Preserve is a national monument of South Africa thanks to its geological history, wildlife, and gorgeous views.
Robberg Nature Reserve sits on a peninsula just outside Plettenberg Bay and is a popular spot for hiking, thanks to the different trails that web throughout the park. The trails vary in difficulty, but each has its own unique beauty and vistas.
As far as natural history goes, the peninsula is known for its prehistoric rocks and Stone Age artifacts. In fact, rocks here date back more than 120 million years. Evidence of inhabitants from the Stone Age has been found in some of the caves around the Robberg peninsula, as well.
You can get your safari fix when visiting Plettenberg Bay by stopping by the Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre . One of the top attractions along the Garden Route , Tenikwa is home to a wide variety of birds, mammals, and marine life. It's more than just a home, actually. Tenikwa is also a wildlife rehabilitation center that treats up to 400 animals every year.
Visitors can take a guided sightseeing tour of the facility to learn about the conservation efforts being carried out. One of the most popular tours is the Wild Cat Experience , which teaches guests about the indigenous wild cats of South Africa, from cheetahs and lions to caracals and leopards.
You can even spend the night at Tenikwa, surrounded by the gorgeous Garden Route scenery. Tenikwa has a variety of accommodation styles, from cabins to suites and a homestead nature lodge.
Address: The Crags, Plettenberg Bay, 6602, South Africa
Stretching out like an arm between the Keurbooms River and the Indian Ocean, Lookout Beach is one of the most popular spots in Plettenberg Bay, and one of the most beautiful. The expansive stretch of white sand unfolds for what seems like forever, with spectacular views of the mountains in every direction.
Lookout Beach sits at the bottom of a winding hill, a quick drive from downtown. You'll find plenty of restaurants near the beach where you can sit back for a refreshing drink or something to eat. The beach is also a wonderful place to see humpback whales right from the shore . You may also be able to see dolphins.
Surfers love to visit this Blue Flag beach because of its exposed beach break. It's a fun place to visit for families, as well. Essentially everyone can find something they love about Lookout Beach.
It's easy to get your wildlife fix when visiting Plettenberg Bay. All you have to do is head about 10 minutes outside town towards Knysna to the Knysna Elephant Park . This incredible experience brings visitors up close and personal with these gentle giants, who roam freely around the park.
The Knysna Elephant Park is the first place in South Africa to take in and care for orphaned elephants. Since the 1990s, the park has helped to raise more than 40 elephants.
The park features a bunch of experiences that bring visitors right up alongside the elephants. Guests are taken to the fields where they can feed and walk alongside the elephant herd. Visitors can even opt for an elephant sleepover at the Extraordinary Elephant Lodge on the property. The lodge overlooks the boma, where the elephants sleep at night, giving guests a unique way to have an animal encounter.
Address: Just off the N2 between Knysna and, Plettenberg Bay, 6600, South Africa
South of Plettenberg Bay, just before you reach Robberg Nature Reserve, you will come to The Wreck Beach. The long stretch of coastline is popular among surfers for its sheltered beach break. But the real draw to the beach is its diving , particularly because of the beach's namesake, The Wreck.
The Wreck is the skeleton of the Athina vessel, which sank in the 1960s just off the coast. Today the sunken ship has become a popular spot for snorkelers and divers to explore the flora and fauna that have since created a habitat out of the bones of the ship.
Exploring sunken treasures aside, The Wreck Beach (also called Robberg Beach) is quite beautiful, thanks to the stark white stretch of sand, teal water, and carpet of green forest that stretches out to the sets of mountains in the distance.
If you're looking for the perfect souvenir from your Garden Route trip , head to Old Nick Village . This buzzing shopping location is designed like a picturesque village of beautiful homes surrounded by lush gardens. The original village dates back to the 19th century, and shoppers have been coming here ever since.
The modern-day village has a mix of vendors selling everything from handmade art and pottery to artisan bread, textiles, plants, and clothing. If you visit on a Wednesday, be sure to check out the Mid Week Market , which is essentially a farmers market selling meat, dairy, produce, and other ethically farmed items.
A popular spot in the village is the Mungo Mill , where you can watch textiles being woven and learn the ins and outs of the weaving process. The village even has spots to pamper yourself with manicures, pedicures, and massages.
Shrub-covered dunes roll gently down to a wide stretch of powdery sand. Sheltered by rocky peninsulas, Sanctuary Beach has all the elements to transform your vibe to "zen." It's quiet, safe for swimming, and easy on the eyes.
The beach is at one end of the famous Beachyhead Drive , right before you reach The Wreck Beach and the Robberg Nature Reserve. A wooden boardwalk will take you down to the beach, where you can sprawl out on a towel or sit on one of the many benches to enjoy the views.
Parking is available at this beach, too, but get there early in the summer months before the lot fills up.
Speaking of Beachyhead Drive, discover one of the most scenic coastal roadways along the Garden Route . Along the coast of Plettenberg Bay, Beachyhead Drive is a gorgeous oceanfront road lined with luxury villas that overlook spectacular sea views. It's affectionately known as "millionaire's drive," if that gives you any sense of the experience.
Beachyhead Drive is across the Piesang River from downtown just before you hit the Robberg Nature Reserve. Along the drive are many footpaths that lead directly down to the beaches.
Plettenberg Bay is not short on views, and you can drink in the best of them from the Whale Tail Lookout Point. This clifftop perch is recognizable by the blue whale tail that sticks up from the viewing platform.
The scenic overlook has views out over Lookout Beach and out to sea and is one of the top places to visit in Plett for spotting whales (of course!).
The charming oasis of St. Peter's Anglican Church sits atop a hillside overlooking Plettenberg Bay. The historic stone church dates back to 1878 and was built for the first bishop of the Church of England in the Cape of Good Hope region.
The lovely building is surrounded by beautiful gardens, stone archways, and fountains. Inside, the church is modest and subdued, save for a beautifully colorful floor that runs down the aisle between the pews. It's easy to see why this is one of the top spots in Plettenberg Bay for weddings, given its gorgeous views over the water and beautiful design.
Address: 24 Church Street, Plettenberg Bay, 6600, South Africa
With a broad stretch of sand, restaurants, and boat tours, it's no wonder this is the most popular beach in Plettenberg Bay. It's widely regarded as the best beach for families , too, as it has lifeguards year-round and is the safest beach in town.
All along the shoreline are tour companies and fishing charters that will take visitors out for sport fishing or to try to catch a glimpse of the many whales that swim offshore.
You can rent paddle boats to cruise up the Piesang River or test your skills in a pickup game of beach volleyball . One thing is for certain, you will never be bored on Central Beach.
Just down the sand is Hobie Beach , which is popular for Hobie cat rentals and jet skiing. Bodyboarding is one of the top activities here because the stretch is home to The Wedge, which is one of the best bodyboarding breaks in the country .
South Africa's southwestern coast has one of the world's most beautiful drives — the Garden Route. The 300-kilometer road trip runs between the towns of Mossel Bay and Storms River, passing through none other than Plettenberg Bay.
Plett makes a great home base from which to explore some of the top sites along the Garden Route . Take the 30-minute journey west to visit the village of Knysna , or continue northeast to drive through the wild mountains and forests of Tsitsikamma National Park .
Plettenberg Bay is almost as far east as you can go before you cross into Eastern Cape province .
Wildlife flourishes along the Garden Route, particularly in Plettenberg Bay. While in town, be sure to take a trip out to the Birds of Eden , a free-flight bird sanctuary. The facility features a dome that spans two hectares over a forested gorge. Inside, more than 3,500 birds swoop down and around, making for a kaleidoscope of color.
The birds are a mixture from around the planet, as well as African birds. Birds that arrive at the sanctuary go through rehabilitation before they are set free into the aviary and can fly around at ease. Most tours of the aviary are self-guided, though guests can request guides ahead of time if they prefer.
Birds are not the only species that are part of the Birds of Eden conservation family. The group has other sanctuaries, such as a primate sanctuary and an apex cat sanctuary. Both are just outside of Plettenberg Bay.
For those traveling with the entire family, the Plett Puzzle Park is the perfect place to do an activity together. The two main attractions here are the life-size 3D Maze, as well as the Forest Puzzle Walk, both of which are suitable for people of all ages.
The 3D Maze is the first of its kind in South Africa. It's a 40 x 40-meter timber maze with snaking passages and crisscrossing bridges that try to mess you up as you look for the four corners of the structure.
The Forest Puzzle Walk is a pathway that spans 350 meters through the forest and fynbos. Along the way, you'll have to solve timed puzzle challenges in order to work your way out of the forest.

Plettenberg Bay Itinerary Pre-travel Tips
Before you start planning your Plettenberg Bay itinerary, there are a few things you should consider before visiting this scenic hillside town. Here are my top pre-travel tips for visiting Plettenberg Bay:
- If you aren’t self-driving, the nearest airport is in George . There are frequent flights from Johannesburg , but you’ll need to book tickets well in advance if you’re traveling during peak season. Rent a car at the airport to travel effortlessly onwards.
- For travelers extending a Cape Town itinerary , I highly recommend renting a car and driving down to Plett. It’s a very scenic drive taking you past gorgeous vistas, flourishing vineyards, and quaint towns. There are, however, flights from Cape Town, albeit less frequent and with much steeper price tags.
- While it’s pretty easy to navigate your way around town on foot, you’ll need a car to explore the rest of the area and the Garden Route hassle-free. This will allow you to plan your stops, get around quickly, and be more flexible.
- There is no shortage of incredible things to do in Plett. But if your schedule is flexible, there are a few other interesting stops worth adding to your Garden Route itinerary. These include exploring the Plett Wine Route and visiting the scenic little towns of Knysna, Wilderness, and George.
- Learn a few local phrases to help you get so much more out of your trip.
- Grab a Lonely Planet guidebook to help out during your South Africa travels .
- If it’s your first visit to South Africa, these South Africa travel tips will come in handy, while this South Africa Bucket List is a great source of inspo .
- If you’re considering travel insurance for your South Africa trip, World Nomads offers coverage for more than 150 adventure activities, emergency medical, lost luggage, trip cancellation, and more.

Incredible Things to do in Plettenberg Bay
This detailed guide stems from spending extended periods in Plett over the past few years. Since there are so many great things to do in Plettenberg Bay, here are all the must-dos when exploring South Africa’s premier beach destination.
Hit the beaches
Spending your days at the beach is arguably the best thing to do in Plettenberg Bay. Plett is revered for its gorgeous golden-sand beaches, and you won’t need to go far to enjoy terrific beach vibes.
There are three beaches in Plett, all equally jaw-dropping. However, your choice is likely to be influenced by your personal beach preferences. Let’s have a quick look at Plett’s beaches:
- Lookout beach near Hill street is the perfect spot to enjoy some beach time, swim safely with lifeguards nearby, and surf.
- Central beach near Beacon Island Resort is a popular spot among locals and families. Although it’s a nice beach, expect large crowds especially during the summer holidays. Come here if you like a bit of buzz on a beach. Central beach is also a popular spot to host events in Plett and during the December holidays there are a bunch of fun activities for the whole family.
- Those looking to escape the crowds can head to Robberg beach , which is also near Beacon Isle. This 5km stretch beach offers beachgoers a much more chilled vibe and is the perfect spot for long relaxing strolls. During peak seasons, you’ll see lifeguards at selected points along the beach.
Top Beach Tips
- Safety first : Although the Western Cape sees less crime than other parts of South Africa, please use the same caution you would while traveling anywhere else in the world. Always be aware of your surroundings and don’t bring valuables with you to the beach or leave your belongings unattended.
- Swimming : Plett’s waters have strong currents. Therefore it’s best to always stick to designated swimming areas with stationed lifeguards.
- Extra sun protection : Before hitting the beach, make sure you are protected against the sun. Besides your favorite shades and a hat, you’ll also want to cover up with a high-quality waterproof sunscreen .
- Stay hydrated : Always bring a water bottle when hitting the beach so that you can stay hydrated. Since it’s safe to drink the tap water in South Africa, it’s a good idea to invest in a reusable water bottle .
Hike Robberg Nature Reserve
If you’re looking to tick off hiking on your list of things to do in Plettenberg Bay, then Robberg Nature Reserve is the place for you.
Robberg Nature Reserve is only a short drive away from town and undeniable one of the best places to experience untouched nature. With rock formations dating back more than 120 million years, it’s n o surprise Robberg is also a World Heritage Site.
Besides its evident beauty and unique geological history, Robberg Nature Reserve is also home to a flourishing plant and animal life. Most notably, the rare blue duiker and a thriving seal colony.
Several scenic hiking trails along the peninsula also allow a chance to get close to nature and spot dolphins, seals, and whales frolicking nearby.
Hiking Trails
The three circular hiking trails vary in length and difficulty, allowing you to really experience the beauty of this area at your own pace and skill level.
Those just looking for a gentle walkabout can explore the plateau, before heading to the beach. Just past the Gap, you’ll spot the wooden stairway leading to a beautiful secluded beach.
More serious hikers, on the other hand, may consider trekking the Witsand or The Point hikes . Both of these hikes are not for the faint-hearted, so be prepared to break a sweat. The Point hike takes about four hours and is the most challenging hike to complete.
Tips for visiting Robberg Nature Reserve
- Entrance Fee: This is a protected area, so you’ll need to pay a small conservation fee to enter the reserve. These funds help maintain the park and ensure it’s safeguarded for future generations.
- Respect the Environment: I t’s not uncommon to spot snakes and other venomous animal life here. Therefore, please always remember to tread carefully wh ile visiting here. Littering and approaching t he wildlife is also strictly forbidden.
- Time your visit: Unless you’re staying overnight at Fountain Shack, know that the park closes at 20: 00 (Oct-Apr) and 18:00 (May-Sept) daily.
Grab Sundowners at The Lookout Deck
Lookout Beach is home to gorgeous o cean views , great surf, and one of the best restaurants in town – The Lookout Deck. With a tantalizing food and cocktail menu, it’s the perfect spot to watch the waves come and go. While the menu caters to all kinds of tastebuds, you can’t go wrong with any of their seafood options!
The Lookout Deck can get crowded, so reserving a table during peak season is highly encouraged.
Enjoy the views at Whale Tail Lookout Point
For jaw-dropping ocean views and a chance to spot dolphins and whales (in season) frolicking in the bay, be sure to head over to Whale Tail Lookout Point . It’s also one of the best things to do in Plettenberg Bay!
There are a couple of benches where you can sit back, watch the waves come and go, spot surfers, or even enjoy a picnic. Although it’s pretty amazing all day long, I highly recommend visiting at sunset.
To get here, you can either drive to the end of Formosa Street, where you’ll find the parking lot. Alternatively, access the viewpoint from the footpath which runs behind The Lookout Deck.
Take a drive on Beachyhead Drive
Beachyhead Drive, also locally known as ‘ millionaire’s drive ’, offers a scenic drive along the Robberg beach peninsula. Here you’ll find the crème de la crème of luxury homes .
Along the way, you’ll also find many quick footpaths leading down to the beach, where you’re likely to have the beach all to yourself!
Browse the quirky s hops
Within town and along the N2 between Knysna and Keurbooms, you’ll find quite a few quirky stalls to drop by. Whether you’re shopping for cute art pieces, home decor, designer clothing or delicious deli snacks – there’s something for everyone in Plett.
Some of my favorite road stalls to drop by include Thyme and Again , The Potter and Global Village .
Relax at Old Nick’s Village
One of the best places in Plettenberg Bay to experience the town’s laidback vibes is at Old Nick Village .
Although the village might be best known for its beautiful gardens, galleries and artisan shops, it has quite a unique history too. The main building complex dates back to 1880, and once served as a general dealer in the area.
Today, however, you can enjoy the stunning grounds, visit the artsy shops and even learn more about the weaving process at Mungo Mill – a newly constructed space offering visitors a unique glimpse into the textile industry.
After browsing the cute shops and learning a bit more about textile manufacturing, head over to The Roost . The restaurant has a lovely garden seating area where you can sit under massive trees and soak up the chilled vibes. In addition to the tantalizing menu, you’ll also find some of the best baked goods on offer in Plett here! Don’t miss the avocado sandwich, it’s delish!
Get up close with wildlife
Near Plett, there are several great wildlife sanctuaries where efforts are being made to protect South Africa’s unique animal life. Some of the most notable and ethical sanctuaries to add to your list of things to do in Plettenberg Bay include Monkeyland , Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary , Birds of Eden and the Elephant Sanctuary .
By joining one of their tours, you’ll have the chance to spot animals in their natural habitat and gain a wealth of knowledge. You’ll also be helping these establishments continue their efforts to protect wildlife.
When to visit Plettenberg Bay
While Plett is an excellent destination to visit year-round, it is not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day! Here’s a quick look at the best time to visit Plettenberg Bay.
During summer (Dec-Feb), expect gorgeous sunny days with some occasional rain. Temperatures may rise as high as 37°C, so remember to put on extra sun protection and stay hydrated. Summer is peak season in Plett, so expect the town to be brimming with tourists and higher accommodation prices, especially during the festive holidays. If you still want to enjoy gorgeous beach days sans the crowds, it’s best to come before the schools close (end Nov) or after the schools reopen (Jan).
In winter (Jun – Aug), you might still see some winter sun, but for most parts, it can be quite gloomy and cold. Rain isn’t uncommon during winter either. If you are visiting Plettenberg Bay during winter, pack plenty of layers and a warm coat. Temperatures generally range between 9 – 22°C.
Spring (Sep-Nov) or autumn (March-May) are excellent times to visit Plettenberg Bay. Expect fewer tourists, lower accommodation prices (excl. Easter holidays), and pleasant temperatures ranging from low to mid twenties. The evenings can, however, still be chilly, so remember to pack a light jacket.
Whale season runs from June to November, and chances are high to spot Humpback and Southern Right whales during this time. However, Bryde’s whales, and (if you’re fortunate), orcas, can be spotted year-round.
Where to stay in Plettenberg Bay
There is no shortage of fantastic accommodation options in Plettenberg Bay. Whether you’re looking to rent a house, traveling on a shoestring, or seeking luxury accommodation, Plett has something for everyone. Here are my top picks on Plettenberg Bay accommodation:
- Treat yourself: The Plettenberg Hotel offers visitors amazing food, excellent seaside views, and is a short stroll to the beach.
- Mid-Range: Beacon Island Resort offers quality accommodation and great service with easy access to the beach.
- Budget: Nothando Backpackers Lodge is right in the heart of town. All rooms have garden views and it’s only a 15-minute walk from Central beach.
Where to eat in Plettenberg Bay
For its size, Plettenberg Bay surprisingly has a lot of choice when it comes to food. Seeing that Plett is a seaside village, expect to find seafood to be the star on most menus. Most restaurants in South Africa do, however, offer vegetarian options. If you are vegan, it’s still pretty easy to find excellent vegan-friendly restaurants in Plett.
- The Roost Café ( see map here ) has beautiful outdoor seating and serves earthy classics, freshly baked bread and glorious sweet treats. I highly recommend the avo toast and lemon meringue! Oh and just a tip – you might spot a few cheeky monkeys while visiting here. Please remember that they are wild animals, so trying to approach or feed them is highly discouraged.
- The beautiful interior and mind blowing views from The Grand’s terrace make it a must-visit. Added to that, the food is simply amazing! The Grand Café is open for breakfast , lunch and dinner, and there’s a neat little bar where you can enjoy their extensive wine list. Make reservations well in advance, especially during peak season.
- The Lookout Deck ( see the map here ) is the perfect spot for sundowners, excellent fresh seafood, and terrific seaside views.
- Off the Hook ( see map here ) – Expect high-quality food with an authentic Lebanese twist. It’s a great spot, especially for lunch. We always enjoy sitting outside, but watching the traffic come and go might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
- The Table ( see the map here ) on Main Street is a popular spot among pizza lovers. It’s a lively restaurant and the pizzas are to die for!
- A stones-throw from town, you’ll find one of the most romantic eateries in Plett – Emily Moon ( see on the map here ). Here you can enjoy a mouthwatering home-style menu with magnificent views overlooking the river, wetlands, and mountains.
Best Day Trips from Plettenberg Bay
While Plettenberg Bay is a fantastic destination to visit, it’s also a great place to base yourself for several day trips.
There are so many beautiful places to visit on the Garden Route . Some of the most popular day trips from Plettenberg Bay include stopping by Wilderness and the lovely town of Knysna with its beautiful beaches . However, if you’re looking for laidback vibes, Keurbooms is an excellent alternative. The village is a stone-throw from Plett and has gorgeous stretched out white-sandy beaches.
Nature seekers, on the other hand, shouldn’t miss spending a day at the Garden Route’s best-kept secret, Nature’s Valley . While more adventurous travelers looking for the perfect mix of nature and outdoor thrills should definitely visit Storms River Mouth .

I found a really cool eBike tour company at the ELEVEN Coffee shop in the Main Street. They took us on a tour of the coast line, forests and surrounds. You should mention them here….it was a highlight of our trip.

Epic Things to Do in Plettenberg Bay
Robberg Nature Reserve is home to one of the best day hikes in South Africa .
Hugging the peninsula, you’ll trek past ridiculously good-looking seascapes, honking (smelly) seals, massive dunes, and (if you’re lucky) you might see a Great White or two lurking in the waters below.
There are three circular hiking trails to choose from:

- Point (9.2 km)
And if the hiking scenery isn’t enough to lure you here for a day out, maybe this will:
- Robberg has rock formations more than 120 million years old.
- Robberg is a World Heritage Site and a National Monument.
- And yes, there are braai facilities. 😜
Cost: Free (if you have a Wild Card ) otherwise, it’s only R50 for South Africans, making it one of the top things to do in Plettenberg Bay on a budget.
Want to stay INSIDE Robberg? Book a night at the Fountain Shack through Cape Nature and soak up the views of the spectacular Robberg Peninsula without another human in sight.

Birds of Eden is one of my favourite things to do in Plettenberg Bay. Whether I’m by myself or dragging a friend around the Garden Route with me, I ways make a pit stop here.
So what is it? Birds of Eden is a free-flight sanctuary. It’s a two-hectare dome (the largest in the world) and houses over 3,500 birds.
I highly recommend coming here first thing in the morning. As soon as those doors open, you want to be there with your camera out.
The birds are busy eating their breakfast, no kids are around to disturb the peace, and the wildlife is mostly relaxed.
Meaning, you’re going to see a lot more birds, and the light here in the mornings is pure magic *chef kiss* .
Birds of Eden is also one of the best things to do in Plettenberg Bay when it rains . As long as it’s not a heavy downpour (and you have a light rain jacket), you’ll still be able to wander around and see some of the wildlife.
Monkeyland is only a hop, skip, and a twirl away from Birds of Eden. It’s the world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary and is a must-visit if you like to “move it, move it.”
None of the monkeys here are “collected”. All the primates are rescues, and the sanctuary does a fantastic job of giving them a forever home and creating a natural life.
Some of the wild animals you can see on one of the guided walks include:
- The Black and White Ruffed Lemur
- The Ringtail Lemur
- The Black Howler Monkey
- The Bolivian Squirrel Monkey
- The Geoffroy’s Spider Monkey
- The Tufter or Brown Capuchin
- The Red-backed Bearded Saki
- The Vervet Monkey
- The White-Handed or Lar Gibbon
And just like its sister sanctuary, it has a few awards under its belt.
The South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA), which consists of Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani, are all winners of:
- Lilizela Service Excellence Awards
- Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award
- World Responsible Tourism Award
Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary
Out of all three ethical sanctuaries, Jukani was the one that made me ugly cry.
I’m a massive cat person, and the stories of the cats who live here break my heart every. damn. time.
All the lions, leopards, jaguars, tigers, puma, cheetahs, caracals are rescues from people’s homes (it’s illegal to have them as pets) or circuses from around the world.
The animals are all on birth control, and the facility doesn’t support breeding at all. Its main aim is to give these large cats who have never experienced life in the wild some semblance of a normal life.
As I mentioned earlier, all three sanctuaries are part of the same company. If you want to visit all three, you can buy a combo ticket from R560.00, which works out far cheaper than buying single tickets for each place (R320.00 each).
You don’t need to see all three places in one day. The combo tickets are valid for a couple of days, giving you the time to slot each one into your schedule without having to rush.
Plus, if the weather isn’t on your side, you have time to wait out the rain.
You want whales? Plettenberg Bay has plenty.
From June to November, dozens of Humpback and Southern Right whales pass the coastal town to breed and nurse their young.
It’s one of the best things to do in Plettenberg Bay in winter . You can spot the migrating giants from the shore or book a whale watching tour to see these amazing animals up close.
But whales aren’t the only creatures you’ll see in the ocean. On your way, you might spot bottlenose dolphins and orcas swimming in the bay.
If there is one thing you’ll NEVER catch doing, it’s bungee jumping. You couldn’t pay me enough money to willingly walk to the edge of a bridge and gooi myself off it into the abyss.
But I know there are a few of you that get a kick out of adrenaline and seek it out like a moth to a flame.
Sound like you? Then the Bloukrans bungee jump will test the steel of your nerves. It’s the world’s highest commercial Bungy , and you’ll free fall off the highest bridge in Africa !
If you do it, not only will you have my awe and respect, but you’ll join the ranks of Prince Harry, who has ticked Bloukrans off his bucket list.
Old Nick Village is another Plettenberg Bay attraction that’s firmly on my “need to visit every single time” list.
The main drawcard for me?
In between the galleries and artisan shops is a small crystal store, Moonstone. It’s been a fixture at Old Nick for 14-years, and I could spend hours admiring all the beautiful stones.
But besides my crystal addiction, Old Nick Village is one of the best things to do in Plettenberg Bay on a rainy day. You can visit the Mungo Weaving Mill, a pottery studio, and shop locally made art, chocolate, and more!
There’s nothing better than a lazy day at the beach during the hot summer months.
Luckily, Plettenberg Bay has some gorgeous golden sand in pristine condition. With six beaches boasting Blue Flag Status (along a coastline that’s only 35 km), you’re spoilt for choice!
- Lookout Beach: One of the most popular Plettenberg Bay beaches, especially for surfers. Stop by the Lookout Deck for a drink.
- Central Beach: The go-to beach in Plettenberg Bay. Over the summer months, expect huge crowds and the constant buzz of something going on. Central Beach is also the stage for one of the biggest events of the year, Plett Rage.
- Robberg Beach: You’ll need to go on a short hike to get here, but the gorgeous ocean views (and lack of crowds are worth it!). Located inside Robberg Nature Reserve , it’s a 5km Blue Flag Beach and is the best way to cool off from the summer heat.
- Keurboomstrand Beach: If the current at Lookout Beach is too strong for you, head to Keurboom Beach. It’s close to the Keurboomstrand Lagoon, which is perfect for all swimming levels. Come here for sunset (the views are a 12/10) and see if you can see Robberg in the distance.
- The Singing Kettle Beach: Close to the Keurbooms River, Singing Kettle is a wonderful spot to watch whales, try SUPing or wander around. Keep an eye out for Plett’s Cathedral Rock and have a drink at Enrico’s Restaurant for sundowners.
Heading to Plettenberg Bay in the winter? But don’t want to spend your days at sea whale watching?
Take to the skies!
Plett has one of the busiest skydiving drop zones in South Africa (and it’s not hard to see why).
You’re free-falling for 35-seconds at 200kph over a gorgeous coastline that’s a breeding ground for hundreds of dolphins, migrating whales, and orcas.
Explore the Plett Wine Route
The Plett Wine Route is the newest wine region in South Africa . In 2000, the first vines planted were planted by Bramon Wine Estate and their success led to a slew of new vineyards popping up.
What wines will you find in Plettenberg Bay?
The region’s cool climate makes it ideal for producing Sauvignon Blanc, Methode Cap Classique (MCC), Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.
If you can, plan your trip around Plett’s annual Wine and Bubbly Festival.
- Bramon Wine Estate
- Anderson Vineyards
- Lodestone Wine & Olives
- Newstead Lund Family Vineyards
- Kay and Monty Vineyards
- Redford Lane Wines
Need to fill a few more gaps on your itinerary? Here are some extra activities to do in Plettenberg Bay:
Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve: Home to the Big 5, it’s one of the top Plettenberg Bay attractions. Stay here or book a 2-hour game drive or 2-hour horseback game reserve safari.
Swim with Seals: Searching for adventure activities in Plettenberg Bay? Go swimming with seals! Meet your divemaster on Central Beach and spend a few hours in the water around Robberg Nature Reserve swimming with Cape fur seals.
Go Canyoning: Canyoning is one of those things to do around Plettenberg Bay that you’ll sign up for in an instant once the summer heat hits. Spend an entire day jumping off cliffs, zip-lining, and swimming in mountain pools.
Whale Tail Lookout Point: Looking for things to do in Plettenberg bay for free? Come here for sunrise or sunset and see if you can spot dolphins or whales frolicking in the bay.
Explore on Beachy Head Drive: Known as “millionaire’s drive”, it’s a scenic stretch of road along the Robberg peninsula. The scenic drive takes you past some of the most beautiful (and expensive) homes in Plett.
Best Day Trips from Plettenberg Bay
Don’t only stay in the Bay during your stay. Use Plett as your launch point to explore more of the Garden Route.
Here are some of the best day trips from Plettenberg Bay to bulk up your itinerary.
Only a 30-minute drive from Plett, you can explore one of the best towns along the Garden Route.
Here are some of the best things to do in Knysna :
- Drive to the top of Knysna Heads and get a breathtaking view of Knysna and the ocean.
- Go snorkelling in the Knysna Lagoon and keep an eye out for the seahorses.
- Spend an afternoon beach hopping

Nature’s Valley is a must-see if you love hiking as much as Keenan loves orange soda (if you get the reference, we are BFFS now).
- Swim with gully sharks
- Hit Nature Valley’s beach
- Rent a canoe from Nature’s Valley Rest Camp
- Hike a portion of the Otter Trail
- Tackle the Salt River Mouth or Tsitsikamma hikes
If I had to choose my favourite place along the Garden Route , it would be Tsitsikamma.
After returning to South Africa from teaching English in Thailand for six months, Tsitsikamma National Park was at the top of my one-month South Africa backpacking rout e.
The suspension bridges took over thoughts, and the wise words of Liz Lemon kept replaying in my head, “I want to go to there.”
Only an hour from Plettenberg Bay, you spend your day trip:
- Hiking the first 6km of the Otter Trail and picnicking by a waterfall.
- Booking the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour.
- Exploring the suspension bridges.
- Kayaking up Storms River Mouth
- Signing up for a scuba diving trip

Plett has something for every budget, whether you’re looking to splurge on a boutique hotel or meet other travellers at a backpackers.
Here are my top picks for accommodation in Plettenberg Bay:
- Emily Moon River Lodge: She is pricey, but she is gorgeous! Emily Moon is a four-star boutique hotel set on the banks of the Bitou River. The decor is quirky with an African flair, the views are stunning, and the food is delectable. Top tip: Take one of the kayaks out on the river for sunset!
- Sky Villa Boutique Hotel: Sky Villa is the perfect choice for travelling families or groups of friends who want an entire house. If it’s just the two of you, there are hotel rooms on the main property. Chill out in the two on-site pools, order room service from the downstairs restaurant, and plan a romantic night for two in the downstairs wine cellar.
- Wild Spirit Backpackers: There are backpackers in Plettenberg Bay (like Nothando Backpackers Lodge ), but I’d urge you to travel further out and stay at Wild Spirit . It’s only a short 20-minute drive away and is a wonderful Garden Route gem. There are hiking trails from the property, and you can fall asleep to the sounds of nature rather than traffic.
Plett is a small coastal town, but that doesn’t mean you have slim pickings for places to eat.
After spending so much time in the bay, these are my favourites I keep returning to every time I visit.
- Simon’s Bar at Emily Moon: Hands down one of the best places in Plettenberg Bay to watch the sunset. While you won’t have a view of the ocean, the light setting over the marshlands is spectacular. Order a pizza and Mojito from Simon’s Bar, or book a table and stay for dinner at the restaurant.
- Roost Cafe: Located in Old Nick’s Village, Roost Cafe is a delicious brunch spot in Plettenberg Bay. With decent WiFi and plug points, it’s a good choice for digital nomads or anyone who needs to catch up on emails before exploring Plett. Vegan and vegetarian options are available.
- Golden Palm: Golden Palm is the restaurant locals recommend to me in droves. If you love your Asian-inspired meals, come here for dinner and feast! Try the dim sum, poke bowls, and teriyaki.
- The Bungalow: Want an ocean view? Drive down to the Bungalow. Situated in mere footsteps from Hobie Beach, you can watch dolphins play in the surf while chowing down on some of the best sushi in Plettenberg Bay.
- Down to Earth: With no WiFi, but incredible views, Down to Earth is a reprieve from the bustling attractions in Plettenberg Bay. Located along the Bitou River and part of the Plett River Lodge, the restaurant serves up a side of tranquillity alongside a delicious cup of coffee and healthy mains.
- Le Fournil Bakery: If you’re in a rush and looking for a good cup of coffee and a quick breakfast, visit Le Fournil Bakery. With freshly-made croissants and decent WiFi, start your day here before jumping into your Plettenberg Bay itinerary.
Plettenberg Bay is a fantastic all-year-round destination.
But each season comes with its pros and cons for your itinerary and wallet.
- Summer: December to February is peak season for Plett. The matrics descend upon the small coastal town for Plett Rage, followed by the rest of South Africa for the end-of-year holidays. The result? High accommodation prices, full beaches, and excellent hot summer weather . If you want to avoid the festive rush, plan your trip to Plett after the kids go back to school in January.
- Winter: Technically, winter (June to August) is a low or shoulder season for Plett. The coastal town is in hydration, and you won’t find the huge crowds of the summer months. But if you can handle the cold temperatures and rain, you can catch the migrating whales !
- Spring: September to November is your last chance to see the whales until next year. You’ll have lower accommodation prices , and the temperatures are slowly warming up. However, rain is still a problem this time of year. Make sure you have a few rainy day activities in mind for a backup plan.
- Autumn: Autumn is a wonderful shoulder season for hikers. The day temperatures are cooler from March to May, making it perfect for those long walks through Robberg. With the summer crowds fizzling out, you can pick up good accommodation deals , as long as you avoid the busy Easter holidays.

Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay, or ‘Plett’ as it’s more commonly known, is a resort town through and through, with mountains, white sand and crystal-blue water making it one of the country’s top local tourist spots. As a result, things can get very busy, but the town retains a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and does have excellent hostels. The scenery to the east in particular is superb, with some of the best coast and indigenous forest in South Africa.

Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route
The town of Plettenberg Bay lies almost on the border of the Western and Eastern Cape . Built on the hillside, most of the town is on a steep slope leading down to the sea, which means that regardless of where you find yourself accommodated, you will be treated to spectacular views of the bay and surrounding hills and mountains.
For holiday-makers, accommodation in Plettenberg Bay is plentiful. From upmarket resorts and hotels to budget Bed & Breakfasts and self catering , accommodation is offered in varying price ranges from budget to over the top luxury. You are sure to find a great place to stay.
Plettenberg Bay has a relatively long history for a South African town, having been regularly visited by Portuguese explorers during the 15th and 16th centuries. Signs of their visits abound, and history enthusiasts can view artifacts such as the remains of the Gonzales Wreck in the town. Early European settlers to the area arrived in the late 1700s, and have also left behind many fascinating historical relics, for example the Old Rectory, built by the Dutch East India Trading company in 1776, and Forest Hall, a privately owned stately home, built in 1864 by William Henry Newdgate.
In modern times, Plettenberg Bay has gained somewhat of a reputation as a pleasure seeker hotspot, and has many leisure activities on offer. From polo at Kurland, to yachting at the Keurbooms River mouth and marina, to less high brow activities like swimming and water sports in the warm, gentle waters. In fact, when you enter the town proper, a monument to one of the symbols of this lush, almost tropical bay greets you: a bronze statue of the dolphins that play in the warm waters just off the coast.
With miles of pristine beaches to choose from, its no wonder that lazing on the beach is so popular with visitors, but, for those that manage to pry themselves away, there are charter boat cruises, hiking, canoeing and abseiling to choose from, to name but a few.Another attraction well worth a visit is the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary; the worlds only multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary, located a few minutes outside of town.
For the adventurous palate, trips to the Mampoer and Witblits distillery are available, where one can view the making of, and sample, these very strong locally produced alcoholic beverages.
While on the topic of culinary and other indulgences, and while there are many fine restaurants, cafés and other eateries to choose from in the town, one of the most memorable must surely be the restaurant at the Beacon Isle Hotel. Built literally straddling a small strip of land between a lagoon and the sea, it almost seems when seated in the restaurant, that the hotel is floating on the water.
For those seeking a once in a lifetime experience, a short trip on the N2 towards Port Elizabeth , and over the border into the Eastern Cape, will bring you to the Bloukrans Bridge. Itself an engineering marvel, this bridge holds another claim to fame. It is the site of the worlds highest commercial bungee jump. At 216 meters, or the equivalent of almost 70 storeys, it is definitely not for the faint (or weak hearted) and many may prefer to view the seemingly endless plunge from the purpose built observing platform on the edge of the gorge.
While at the bridge, whether or not you decide to take the plunge, it is worth visiting the Khoisan Village, which offers insights into the lives of the native peoples of the area, as well as opportunities to buy local arts and crafts.

We love Plettenberg Bay and return every year. The garden route is in itself a must visit destination. I would say one of the worlds best kept secrets. Beautiful scenery, lovely country vibes, at the sea, beauty as far as the eye can see... and the people are still what you expect in the country. It always feels like a holiday Town.
