Colne is a former cotton town which is fortunate enough to be located in a very attractive semi-rural area. The town is dominated by Pendle Hill, which is famous for the Pendle Witches.
The town was originally a Roman settlement called Colunio and there are remains of a Roman fort on the outskirts of the town at Tum Hill.
Colne is known as the "Bonnie town on the hill" built as it is at the top of a hill. Over the years it prospered and spread out down both sides of the hill into what is called the North and South Valleys.
The town is centred upon a long straddling road which runs along the ridge of this hill.
The town centre has a good range of shops and a small covered market hall.
There is also a retail park at North Valley and a large outlet shopping centre called Boundary Mill on the border with Nelson.
The town has lost most of its traditional industry but is now emerging as a perhaps unlikely tourist attraction.
The main tourist attraction in the town is Wycollar Country Park. It is based on the area around the small hamlet of Wycollar which lies in a narrow valley.
At one time the local water board planned to flood the valley and turn it into a reservoir. Local protests stopped this and ever since, the village has been preserved and is now a very popular tourist attraction.
The centrepiece of the village is the ruins of Wycollar Hall, which has links to the Bronte sisters from the neighbouring town of Haworth. There is a small heritage centre attached to the library in the town centre.
The main event which brings crowds into the town is a music festival which is held every August bank holiday.
The town has 3 theatres, including the Municipal Hall which regularly hosts shows by well-known entertainers. Colne was also the place where Britains first purpose-built cinema was.
The towns most famous son is Wallace Hartley. Although not a household name, he is the conductor who famously made the Titanic's orchestra carry on playing whilst the ship sank.
His funeral in the town attracted a crowd of 50,000 for the procession.
Colne's football team reached Wembley in 1988 and won the FA Vase. The team enjoyed a dramatic rise through the leagues in the 1980s and were only refused promotion to the highest non-league division because the ground was not passed as satisfactory.
Unfortunately, the team disbanded but another team now plays in the regional league at Holt House Stadium.
Colne is certainly worth a visit, for its beautiful scenery and its tourist attractions. It is also a great base for a touring holiday, with the Yorkshire Dales being only 12 miles away.
The important tourist towns of Skipton , Harrogate , Blackpool and Morecambe are close by, as is Manchester with all its attractions.

As Bonnie Colne sits on a ridge, you can’t walk very far at all without taking in some spectacular views of the upland Pennine countryside all around. Similarly, there is no need to drive to the magnificent landscape when you can walk to it, because it is right on our doorstep. Take a look at our fabulous range of walks, many of which are circular. Some, like the Pendle Three Peaks, require oodles of stamina and grit, but we have even more that are pleasing rambles, such as The East Colne Way, the Canal Walks or the Castercliffe Circular Walk. There is simply no excuse not to get out, fill your lungs with lots of lovely fresh air and commune with the glorious nature that is all around us! Do remember to listen out for the haunting cry of the curlew in spring and summer.
Pendle's Three Peaks
Gloriously varied and unspoilt countryside awaits those who walk Pendle’s Three Peaks. The Three Peaks in question are Pendle Hill, Boulsworth Hill, and Weets Hill and all have their own very unique character. Pendle Hill is magnificent and brooding, and at 1,838 feet its almost a mountain. The picturesque villages in the lea of the hill all have stories of the Pendle Witches to tell. Weets Hill at 1,310 feet tall has great views of the Yorkshire Dales, and Boulsworth Hill at 1,706 feet has dramtaic crags and moorland. There is a “Pendle’s Three Peaks” booklet available for a small charge at Pendle’s Tourist Information Centres which gives the routes for all three peaks or dowload the route on this website….so what’s stopping you! Come and walk our three peaks, and make a weekend of it!
East Colne Way
The East Colne Way is a 5 mile circular walk starting from Lakeside Cafe, Ball Grove Park, just outside Colne. Described as a walk through the green lungs of Colne, you are not far from the end of the M65, but could be miles from anywhere in beautiful countryside on this walk.
Castercliffe Circular Walk
“Our walk starts from the Admiral Lord Rodney pub (01282 870083) and sets off running alongside Pendle Water. We soon take a path over the hills towards Trawden and take a route back towards Colne through this attractive area of Pennine Lancashire. We walk across the site of an iron age Hill Fort with its spectacular 360° views of the surrounding hills before dropping back into Colne.”
Brontes Circular Walk
This lovely 6 mile circular walk takes you around Trawden and Wycoller. The Bronte Sisters, famous for their literary work, gathered inspiration for their books from the people and countryside around them. They often walked to Wycoller in Pendle, with its beautiful countryside, and colouful local characters. One such character was Squire Cunliffe and his family who lived in Wycoller Hall, which was “Ferndean Manor” in Charlotte Bronte’s novel “Jane Eyre”.
Winewall Circular Walk
“On this walk we take an attractive circuit through the farmed landscape in the very east of the County of Lancashire. On the walk you can enjoy the rich pattern of old farm houses and traditional drystone walls which make this landscape so distinctive. We take you to the villages of Laneshaw Bridge and Winewall which each developed from their strong links with the surrounding countryside”
Ferndean Way
The Ferndean Way is a lovely route from historic Waterside in Colne, visiting not one, but two beautiful country parks.
Foulridge Beating the Bounds
The custom has taken place in Britain in a variety of forms for 2,000 years. Maps were rare and the position of boundaries was passed on by word of mouth. It became usual to make a formal perambulation or walk of the boundaries to check that no one had moved any of the marker stones or laid claim to your land. This walk covers the parish of Foulridge and takes in a wide variety of landscapes; from the gentle, flat setting around the Leeds & Liverpool Canal reservoirs, to the remote higher ground, offering spectacular views of the magnificent Pendle countryside. There are numerous pubs and eating establishments in the centre of the village close to the start and end point of this walk. These include three village pubs, a chip shop and café.
Giz a follow.

In case it was unclear, we bloomin' love Lancashire here at LancsLive. The clue is in the name, after all.
There's few places in the United Kingdom or world, as far as we're concerned, where you can enjoy a vibrant, bustling city life with the tranquillity and calm of the open countryside a five minute drive away.
READ MORE: Life on Lancashire's cheapest street where houses sell for £25,000 - and residents can't believe it
It really does have it all, including dozens of great attractions blessing us every single day. We all know the usual ones. We're talking Pendle Hill, the Fulwood Barracks and Towneley Park. But what about the lesser known attractions?
Here are the nine hidden gems to visit and enjoy in and around Lancashire. We've included historical Lancashire on the list, because if it was once ours we're claim it for life. Go out there and breathe it in.
Turbary Woods Owl and Birds of Prey Sanctuary
Set in the beautiful Ribble Valley countryside near Lostock Hall is a volunteer run sanctuary for birds of prey. It's a little know fact that England is home to many eagles, owls and kites and this sanctuary has more than 80 for you to admire. If you visit you will have the chance to participate in a flying display, with the birds landing on your gloved hand.
It costs just £22 for a whole family (two adults and two children) to go along for the day.
Wycoller Village and Country Park
Lancashire is home to many beautiful parks and this one is no exception.
Set between Colne and Barnoldswick, the park is still home to the fantastic ruins of Wycoller Hall and the old bridges across the nearby beck, both of which have stood for more than 1,000 years. The hall is meant to be the inspiration for Jane Eyre's Ferndean Manor and is set amongst beautiful rolling hills.
Animal Quackers
Everyone loves animals and this farm located just south of Bacup near Stacksteads is the perfect place to visit more of them. The farm features all the usual favourites including pigs, sheep and cows but also includes donkeys, several birds of prey, deer and even snakes.
This is an ideal place to take the kids, who can enjoy donkey rides, animal feedings and a petting zoo. It's also got a brilliant café and a guided tour.
Stone circle walk near Duddon Estuary
Duddon Estuary is one of most idyllic spots in the whole county, giving you a beautiful view of Morecambe Bay and miles of craggy landscape. This stone circle walk, which follows an ancient path, follows the Lacra Bank over acres of stunning countryside overlooking the bay and the Irish Sea.
It's still relatively unknown to locals and could be one of the best walks you go on this year.
The village of Pilling, north of Poulton-le-Fylde, may be a well known place for locals but is relatively unknown across the rest of Lancashire.
Pilling is full of beautiful houses, bursting with history and features two stunning churches.
As well as the beauty and the nearby coastline, it has two well known pubs and an old windmill. It's the perfect place to go if you want to get away for the day.
Sizergh Castle
Did you know Kendal had its own castle? Set amongst acres of fabulous countryside is Sizergh Castle, which could have been built as far back as the 12th Century.
It is still home to the Hornyold-Strickland family whilst its grounds and vast estate are under he care of the national trust.
It is a breathtaking place, certainly not one to miss.
Piel Island
Yes we've included a whole island on this list. Just off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness in Morecambe Bay you will find an island that is about 0.8 square miles, in other words, tiny.
It's home to a beautiful arcane castle, a famous pub called the Ship Inn and a place where you can camp. There is nothing else but ocean and fields.
It is bliss.
Browsholme Hall
Lancashire is full of stunning country houses but Browsholme is one of the lesser known ones.
Sat in the middle of nowhere near Cow Ark in Clitheroe , Browsholme was once of the home of ancient Parker family who used to act as park keepers for Bowland Forest, ensuring that wild boar there were ready to be hunted by Medieval kings.
Much of the amazing 14th Century house still stands today, an amazing beacon to a huge part of Lancashire's history.
Yarrow Valley Country Park
On Big Lodge Water in Chorley you will find Yarrow Valley Country Park.
The park is a little off the beaten track and so remains somewhat illusive to residents. Despite this it is still one of the best places to explore the local wildlife and take freshing walks. If you want to take time to relax in an idyllic setting away in a place that is relatively unknown.
