15 Best Things to Do in Matlock (Derbyshire, England)

At the eastern flank of the Peak District National Park, Matlock is a town famed for its Victorian spa and the spinning industry launched by Sir Richard Arkwright in the 18th century.

The Derwent Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and within minutes you’ll be at the Cromford Mills, where Arkwright invented the modern factory system in the 1770s.

Thermal springs had been discovered near Matlock in 1689, and in the 19th century a spa resort flourished just downriver.

Matlock Bath hugs the Derwent in the steep valley and has family destinations like the Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park, and the fantastic Heights of Abraham, a country park posted on the crest of a hill.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Matlock :

1. Heights of Abraham

Heights of Abraham

In 60 acres, this Victorian country park even has a name that evokes a bygone era.

The “Heights of Abraham” comes from the Plains of Abraham in Quebec, scene of a pivotal battle in 1759 during the Seven Years’ War.

There’s a cable-car lifting you up to the hilltop park where you’ll be awed by the panoramas of the Derwent Valley from the Victoria Prospect Tower and an amphitheatre below.

The park also has two caves, the Great Masson Cavern and the Great Rutland Cavern, both mined for lead since Roman times.

Kids can burn off energy on two adventure play areas, while there’s a cafe and an exhibition hall covering the history of the estate and showcasing an amazing fossil collection.

2. Lumsdale Valley

Lumsdale Valley

On the east side of Matlock this steep wooded gorge blends striking natural beauty with the ghosts of water-powered industry.

Cromford Mills has set up a mile-long self-guided walking trail through the valley, on which you’ll pass the evocative ruins of mills, as well as mill ponds, waterfalls and cascades.

The trail is a photographer’s dream and takes around 90 minutes, descending 500 metres as you go.

You can download a leaflet that points out the history behind the buildings on the route.

It’s a good idea to wear walking shoes and to go carefully, as some of the rocks can be slippery in wet weather.

3. Peak District Lead Mining Museum

Peak District Lead Mining Museum

The local lead mining industry has been consigned to the past, but was once one of the region’s main sources of income.

The museum in Matlock Bath’s Grand Pavilion has three mock mine tunnels, in which you’ll taste the conditions miners including children were expected to work in.

Kids will get to crawl through tunnels and play with interactive stations.

You’ll also get to marvel at the immense Wills Founder Water Pressure Engine, built in Coalbrookdale in Shropshire in 1819 and using hydraulic power to pump water from deep underground.

There are detailed exhibitions about the geology that made these mines so lucrative, and a collection of more than 3,000 mineral specimens collected by the eminent petrologist Professor A. Howie.

4. Gulliver’s Kingdom

 Gulliver's Kingdom

In Matlock Bath, Gulliver’s Kingdom is a theme park marketed towards families with children aged between two and thirteen.

It opened in 1978 and was the first of three Gulliver’s Travels-themed attractions in England.

There are rollercoasters, including the steel-built Swtichback, as well as a cycle monorail, fairground-style amusements and water rides.

The attraction is perched on a sharp hill, and has distant views of over the Heights of Abraham and Starkholmes.

The rides adapt to the contours of the hill, while there’s a chairlift ferrying visitors up and down the slope.

Kids can be active too, at the Crows Nest Quest, a high ropes course that opened in 2017 and has a maximum height of 17 metres, looking across the valley.

5. Matlock Bath Aquarium and Arcade

Matlock Bath Aquarium and Arcade

The building where Victorians would “take the waters” has been turned into a peculiar but likeable visitor attraction.

The original thermal pool is replenished by more than 2,271,000 litres of water each day.

Victorian bathers have long since been replaced by common, mirror and koi carp, some as heavy as 13 kg.

You can also see a “petrifying well” once believed to turn objects into stone (rather than coating them with mineral deposits!), as well as an assortment of gemstones and fossils, a collection of holograms and more than 1,700 pieces of Goss and Crested china.

6. National Tramway Museum

National Tramway Museum

Ten minutes on the road from the centre of Matlock is a museum devoted to the vehicles that were a linchpin of cities in the UK in the early 20th century.

The museum has more than 60 trams, built between 1900 and 1930, many of which are in working order.

These run for a mile through the surrounding Crich Tramway Village, a nostalgic street scene, and out into the open countryside.

You can take unlimited rides, and explore indoor spaces like the Century of Trams exhibition in a huge shed.

Some of the trams have been adopted from systems in other countries, and you can see them being restored at the Workshop Viewing Gallery.

7. Cromford Mills

Cromford Mills

A first stop on your trip through the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site, Cromford Mills was Sir Richard Arkwright’s first spinning mill complex.

Constructed in the 1770s this site changed the course of industrial and world history, as the place where the modern factory system was born.

Cromford Mills is the centrepiece of the World Heritage Site and has a multimedia gallery where you can meet a hologram of Arkwright, check out interactive displays and watch a film about the mills narrated by actor Brian Blessed.

This sprawling site also has shops, cafes and more galleries, and you can also take a guided narrowboat ride along the Cromford Canal for deeper insights about the complex and the Derwent Valley.

8. Cromford Canal

Cromford Canal

Starting out at the Cromford Mill you could take a memorable walk along the 18th-century Cromford Canal for a few miles.

In summer there’s plenty of cover from the trees next to the towpath, and some beautiful old features, like wharf warehouses, the Gregory Tunnel, railway brake cars, a functioning swing bridge and a pumphouse, which we’ll bring up next.

June is a lovely time to walk by the water, when you’re sure to see goslings, ducklings and cygnets in the water.

The canal used to run for 15 miles from Cromford to the Erewash Canal, and so far five miles have been restored as far as Ambergate.

9. Leawood Pump House

Leawood Pump House

A charming piece of industrial heritage, the Leawood Pump House is just over a mile along the Cromford Canal and dates to 1849. This facility was built to draw water from the River Derwent, which travels along a 140-metre tunnel and is then lifted nine metres to be pumped into the Cromford Canal.

The Pump House was in constant use from its construction until 1944, and was restored by the Cromford Canal Society in 1979. It’s a sight to admire at any time, but even better on the days when the steam-powered Watt-type beam engine is up and running.

On these days you can go in to feel the heat radiating from the boilers and see the wave caused by tons of water being discharged into the canal.

10. Hall Leys Park

Hall Leys Park

In 2017 Hall Leys Park picked up its tenth consecutive Green Flag award, which places it among the best parks in the country.

South of the town centre, on the Derwent and facing the hilltop Riber Castle, the park has lots to keep children stimulated in summer.

There’s a boating lake with vintage motorised boats, a miniature railway and an interactive wet play area.

There’s also a cafe, a pretty Victorian bandstand where local brass bands give summer concerts, and a cute fountain at the centre of formal flowerbeds.

11. Peak Rail

Peak Rail

On Platform 2 at Matlock Railway Station you can step aboard a steam train for a four-mile steam train ride.

Peak Rail runs between Matlock and Rowsely South, a short way up the Derwent.

This used to be on the Midland Railway Line that ran from Manchester to London up to 1968. This piece of the line has been restored since 1987, and was only extended to Matlock in 2011. The locomotives operating on heritage lines can vary because of repairs, but in summer 2018 all services were pulled by a mid-20th-century Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST steam engine.

All trains have a buffet coach for drinks and snacks, while there’s also a less frequent Pullman-style Palatine Dining Restaurant train if you want to have a Sunday lunch in style.

12. Matlock Meadows

Matlock Meadows

High on Matlock’s western shoulder is a dairy farm that has become a fun summer day out, especially if you love ice cream.

The farm is free to visit, and generates income through its ice cream, made using milk from the farm’s own dairy herd.

You can buy some to take with you or try it at the cafe, which serves 15 different flavours, as well as a choice of sorbets, sundaes and snacks.

There’s a shop selling arts and crafts handmade on the farm, and a small play area outside.

You’re also welcome to visit the field and barn next door, which have cows, chickens, sheep and a micro pig.

13. Black Rocks

Black Rocks

Soaring over Cromford to the south is a sudden natural gritstone outcrop.

You can navigate the waymarked trails on Cromford Moor, climbing to Sheep Pasture Top for a stirring panorama encompassing the Cromford, the Matlock Gorge to the north and parts of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

The Black Rocks were mined for lead, and growing in cracks are unusual plants that can tolerate the high lead content in the rocks.

This wall has been a climbing destination for more than 100 years and on a sunny day you’re sure to see people clambering up the sheer rock faces.

Close by you can get onto the High Peak Trail, following the course of the defunct Cromford and High Peak Railway.

14. Matlock Farm Park

Matlock Farm Park

On a working farm covering 600 acres, this child-oriented attraction has a host of domestic animals like lambs, llamas, goats, sheep, turkeys, ponies and cattle, but also wallabies and meerkats.

There are seasonal animal encounters for kids, like holding rabbits, guinea pigs and chicks, and feeding lambs in spring.

At the meerkat enclosure little ones can watch live talks and demonstrations, while also picking up facts about the countryside and finding out about life on a farm.

There are also pony rides and ferret races, as well as indoor and outdoor play areas and go-karts.

The Farm Park is also attached to a riding school and trekking centre for horseback rides and pony trekking.

15. Matlock Bath Illuminations

Matlock Bath Illuminations

Between early September and late October there’s a light display on the River Derwent that inspired a lot of local affection.

Matlock Bath Illuminations are now more than 120 years old, and are produced by the Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders Association.

Mounted on their boats are models made with plenty of love, following a different theme each year.

Recent subject have been Chinese dragons, transport, Dr Who and Star Wars.

You can watch the displays on the displays on Saturday and Sunday nights just off Derby Road beside the Derwent.

18 Amazing Things to Do in Matlock, Derbyshire

' src=

Whether you are visiting Matlock for a holiday or have lived here for years, here are my favourite amazing things to do in Matlock.

Matlock is my hometown and where I grew up, as a kid my mum had a delicatessen in Matlock, so I would be in town after school every day. My dad lived at the top of the big steep hill and I went to ‘Brownies’ in Matlock every Tuesday night! Though I moved away for a few years, I returned 5 years ago and have always called Matlock and its surrounding areas home.

There are always more things for me to try and see, but I think you will agree I am quite well placed to share my favourite and best things to do in Matlock. I am focusing on Matlock and this post includes things to do with kids, with friends, with family and everyone in between. I will write another post on Matlock Bath, a very different, but also amazing place.

Matlock has my heart and honestly feel it is on the up and up. I wrote a post about why Matlock is a great place to live and from that blog was recently asked to be the Matlock expert on ‘Escape to the Country’! On my fun BBC1 debut I shared just why Matlock is such a brilliant place with their millions of watchers! Do you agree?

Nestled on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Matlock is an old spa town in the Derbyshire Dales. Set in a valley it is surrounded by beautiful Derbyshire countryside and lots of steep hills! It’s ok though, much of the town is flat at the bottom of the valley.

It is a small town with a population of about 9500 and home to an award winning park, waterfalls and many independent shops.

Pssst… If it’s food and drink specifically you’re after I have a blog just about the best places to eat and drink in Matlock!

18 Amazing Things to Do in Matlock

If you’re visiting Matlock or looking for something new to do here are some of my favourite things to do in Matlock.

Visit Deception Escape Rooms

If you like escape rooms then make sure you visit Deception. It is at the top of Firs Parade in the centre of town. They have four different themed escape rooms including the scary room and a special Christmas themed room.

They also have an online escape room and escape board games to play. It really is a magical mystery place once you walk inside the door and definitely worth a visit with friends or family.

They also do corporate escape rooms for a different kind of away day too.

Walk to Lumsdale Falls

People seem to drive from far away to visit the beautiful Lumsdale Falls and Bentley Brook . It is a beautiful walk along a steep sided gorge, previously used as a form of power and water for Arkwright’s Mill. Much of the falls were closed and fenced off during lockdown due to overuse, but most of the area has been reopened now.

It is worth the trip to the top of the falls to see the ponds and you can do a circular walk from Matlock Green and back down the big steep hill. All in all it takes about 1hour and 15 minutes. There are various different routes you can take, including a fairly easy walk along a path and then the road to get to the falls.

Make sure you make a visit to Bentley Brewery if you’re visiting at the weekend for a pie and a pint!

Best things to do in Matlock

Take a boat or train trip on Matlock Boats and Trains

If you’ve been to Matlock before you will probably know about Matlock Boats and Trains. Something you have to do if you have kids and maybe give it a go if you don’t too!

They recently converted the boats and train to electric, so they are more environmentally friendly too. The train is only £1 and goes up and down the park, lots of fun for the little ones.

The boats are great and is a go to when I have friend’s kids visiting. They are both closed in the winter though and often the pond is emptied out, so don’t be disappointed if you are visiting off season.

Go on a steam train on the Heritage Railway

This is one thing in Matlock I still haven’t done! I regularly see the steam train at the station in Matlock. It goes up the heritage railway track to Rowsley and back. You can get a regular seat or include food and drinks too.

They have some ‘kids go free’ days and also special trips for occasions such as Mother’s Day or Christmas. They have evening do’s too, including Pie and mash evening and a murder mystery evening! What fun!

Visit our award winning Hall Leys Park

Hall Leys Park is award winning. Multi Award winning! Every year for over 12 years it has won the Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy and continues to add to its vast array of things to do.

You can play tennis, play in a skate boarding area or even have a game of table tennis on one of the tables in the park. There is a bowls lawn with a friendly league you can join or watch on a summer’s day.

There is the previously mentioned train and boats and a fully equipped kids playground too. Not to mention the cafe, amazing flower display, bandstand and big expanse of grass for picnics and ball sports. It really is a park that has everything and it is bang smack in the centre of town too. I feel so lucky and proud to have such a beautiful and well kept park in my home town.

There are also toilets! Very important.

Best things to do in Matlock

Take a walk to Pic Tor and High Tor

I found so many new walks around Matlock and Derbyshire during lockdown and will be writing some more detailed posts about the circular walking routes around Matlock soon.

Pic Tor is a short walk that takes around 30 minutes or less for a round trip. It has great views across the town and you can come back down through the churchyard and down Stoney Way, a steep cobbled street. I regularly do this loop for a reasonable dog walk .

High Tor is a longer and higher loop. You can include Pic Tor at the start and end, but you need to go slightly back down to go up again the other side. The views from High Tor are incredible. You can see down into Matlock bath or across the whole valley. If you want to make the walk longer you can come down through the woods and into Matlock Bath by the cable cars and walk back along the road. The top of High Tor is a great place to let the dog of the lead too for a run around. Cookie loves it!

Best things to do in Matlock

Visit Matlock Farm Park and bounce on the giant pillow

I wish I hadn’t waited until I had friend’s with kids visiting because I had SO much fun on the giant bouncy pillow at Matlock Farm Park. It is literally exactly that, like a giant pillow and bouncy castle rolled into one and somehow you don’t easily fall off the edge.

There is much more to do at the farm park other than the pillow. A whole range of farm animals to pet and feed, small tractors to race on, a regular bouncy castle and a couple of cafes and drinks stall to keep your belly full too.

The farm park is a drive out of the town and costs around £10 for adults and under 2s go free.

Find out more about Matlock Farm Park .

Best things to do in Matlock

Have a cocktail at Monk Bar

If you’re here for the drinking then Matlock doesn’t disappoint. There are lots of cocktail bars and pubs for a drink with lots of locally brewed ales on offer.

My favourite though is Monk Bar, who do the absolute best Porn Star Martinis! They used to do 241 cocktails from 5-7pm every day, but that has ended so it’s just 242!

You don’t need to book and can see the full Monk Bar Cocktail menu here .

Best things to do in Matlock

Treat yourself to cake from Butterfingers

Oh Butterfingers! Beware the cakes here are amazing and you will definitely want to go more than once to give a few different ones a try. Don’t worry they do takeaway too.

Butterfingers is on Dale Road and has a couple of outside seats and a few inside. They are dog friendly and offer some lunch options alongside the cakes too. The waffles are yum!

More about Butterfingers .

Get an ice cream and pet the cows at Matlock Meadows

We have not one, but two farm parks in Matlock. Matlock Meadows is a bit smaller and includes a lovely cafe with homemade ice cream. They have a cafe, kids playground and farm animals to pet too.

It is is just a short walk up the hill from Sainsbury’s. They close in the winter, but open from February half term.

Matlock Meadows

Shop at some of the independent shops

Matlock has so many lovely independent shops, Dale Road in Matlock is full of independent shops and a great place to busy yourself for an hour or more with some retail therapy.

There are antique shops, clothes shops, interior shops and more. I love that there are a mix of gift shops that are perfect for present buying to shops with all the random things you might need at home.

My favourites are Toy Stories for beautiful children’s books and presents, to Matlock Antiques and Collectables which you can get lost in for hours.

Best things to do in Matlock

Walk up the big hill for micro pubs and beer gardens

Make sure you save some time to head up the big steep hill (Bank Road) too. There are quite a few independent pubs and micro pubs that are worth the trek up and also a beautiful clothes shop called Bella Figura .

I would definitely recommend visiting The ThornTree Inn which has incredible views across the valley. Same with The Laburnum Inn , which has the best beer garden in Matlock. Especially if you want some early evening sun in the summer. Nowhere at the bottom of town gets any evening sunshine.

Best things to do in Matlock

Wine tasting at Bradman’s

So I am not actually sure if Bradman’s do wine tasting yet, but I know they have talked about doing it soon. You can also just do your own wine tasting from the extensive menu of tasty wines.

They have a great balcony on the river which is a perfect spot to enjoy an afternoon glass of wine.

Bradman’s wine bar

Eat a Stone Baked Pizza at D’alessandro’s

Honestly, D’alessandro’s pizzas are incredible! They are only open Thursday to Saturday, but oh my goodness when they are I want one every night.

They make their own cheese and honey and honestly they are baked to perfection. You can even order a pizza and they will deliver it to the micropub next door for you!

More about D’alessandro’s

Best things to do in Matlock

Walk along the river

We are so lucky to have the River Derwent running through the centre of town. You can walk along parts of the river in the park or continue round and back towards the road towards Matlock Bath .

You can also head down to the river across the road from the train station and walk all the way along to Darley Dale. The footpath goes up and over a small bridge that crosses the train track about ten minutes down from town and then turns into the walking and cycling path that goes all the way to Rowsley. The first part is beside the river and then it moves to being beside the train track. It’s super flat (except for crossing the bridge) so a really easy walk.

Best things to do in Matlock

Go swimming or do some sport at The Arc

If you’re looking to to get in some exercise while you’re in town or wanting to tire out the kids then visit The Arc sports centre and swimming pool. It’s a brilliant pool with views of the trees through the big windows and a kids pool too. The changing rooms are spacious and clean and there are lots of classes to enjoy, a gym and other sports facilities.

Arc Leisure

Go Wild swimming!

I am yet to write about wild swimming in Matlock, but I will be doing this soon. If you fancy a short drive there are a couple of excellent wild swimming spots in Youlgreave I have a detailed blog about .

I’ve been told about the Matlock Swoosh in the river, only suitable during low rainfall that is a lot of fun so I am going to give that a try soon. Plus there is a pond towards Darley Dale I need to try. Watch this space for more info.

Best things to do in Matlock

Get some work done at Coworking Corner

OK so maybe you didn’t come to Matlock to work, but workations are definitely the new way to travel, so perhaps you did?! Coworking Corner is a new(ish) friendly and cosy coworking space in Matlock. You can book just for the day, for a week, a month or whatever you need.

We have a friendly dog, unlimited hot drinks and homemade cookies, not to mention fast wifi!

Find out more about Coworking Corner or follow all their fun reels on Instagram .

20 things to do in Matlock and Matlock Bath

On the south-eastern edge of the Peak District National Park lies the tourist hub of Matlock and Matlock Bath. These two towns are only a mile apart from each other, connected by the River Derwent and the A6, and are a popular base for families visiting the Peak District as there are so many things to do in Matlock and Matlock Bath with kids. Indeed a visit to Matlock is one of the best days out if you’re visiting the Peak District, even though it’s just outside the National Park boundary.

This article contains affiliate links. Should you click to purchase, it is at no additional cost to you, but I receive a small commission.

Whilst Matlock, which originated as a spa town, retains a typical urban feel with shops, cafes and transport links, it is neighbouring Matlock Bath has taken on a very different guise. When you arrive at its main promenade lined with gift shops, amusement arcades and fish-and-chip cafes, overlooking the canoes and boats playing on the river, and with a cable car precariously crossing the gorge, you can immediately see why landlocked Matlock Bath is often referred to as ‘Derbyshire-on-Sea’. There’s a distinct holiday vibe to this town, and it is also very popular with the motorbike fraternity.

So if you’re planning a visit to the area, these are the top things to do in Matlock, Matlock Bath, and also the things to do near Matlock.

1. Heights of Abraham

READ: Heights of Abraham REVIEW

Heights of Abraham  is perhaps the top reason to visit Matlock. A cable car takes you up to Heights of Abraham for some stunning views, and your ticket also gives you entry to two caverns where you venture deep under ground and learn about the history of lead mining in the area.

You can also hunt for fossils and there are two adventure playgrounds. Plan to spend a full day if visiting with young kids.

Heights of Abraham

Check the  website  for opening times and ticket prices. Heights of Abraham closes for winter. You can buy tickets in advance online, but you still have to queue in the same queue on entry, so you don’t really save any time.

Also, note that the only parking is at  Matlock Bath Station . You have to pay extra to park here and it does get busy at peak season, so get there early.

2. Gulliver’s Kingdom

READ: T ips for visiting Gulliver’s Kingdom Matlock

Gulliver’s Kingdom Matlock is a theme park aimed at children aged 2 to 13 just outside Matlock. There are 17 rides across 6 themed areas, including a log flume, a Drop Tower, Dino Explorer Cars, and a Cycle Mono Rail. Gulliver Kingdom Matlock

There is also themed accommodation available within Gulliver’s Kingdom Resort at The Explorers Retreat and Fairytale Retreat, which include pirate, princess and wizard themes. Family cabins can sleep up to five people and packages include access to the main theme park.

Opening times are seasonal, so check the  website  for up to date information.

3. Peak Rail

Ride an old steam train on this preserved railway line between Rowsley South Station and Matlock Platform 2.

There are special events running through the year from dining experiences to Santa Specials and an Easter Treasure Hunt, and they also have Kids Go Free Days throughout the year.

Award-winning Hall Leys Park lies in the centre of Matlock. With its boating lake, riverside walks, tennis courts and skateboard park, it makes for a perfect afternoon stroll or picnic spot.

Hall Leys Park

There’s even a playground with a splash area , and miniature railway; perfect if you’re visiting Matlock with kids. Do note that whilst the park stays open all year round, some facilities such as the café and miniature railway are seasonal.

An outdoor market is also held every Wednesday in the park from April to October selling local produce and crafts.

5. Matlock Farm Park

READ: Matlock Farm Park REVIEW

With so many farms dotted around the Peak District, you’d be surprised to learn that the only place where you can actually feed farm animals is Matlock Farm Park . Technically, it is situated just outside the National Park boundary, but it’s a fantastic day out if you’re visiting the Peak District or staying near Matlock, especially for younger kids.

pony rides at Matlock Farm Park

But there’s more to Matlock Farm Park than just feeding the farm animals. There are no less than three outdoor play areas, pony rides and horse riding lessons, go karts, an indoor play area, as well as meerkats and wallabies to meet!

Check out their website for opening times and ticket prices.

6. Matlock Meadows

READ: Matlock Meadows REVIEW

Matlock Meadows is a working farm open to visitors to eat in the café, meet the local residents and go wild in the play area.

There is both an outdoor and indoor play area. The outdoor play area can get rather muddy, so bring wellies. But the indoor play area makes for a good  rainy day option , and is inside the barn and there are small ride on tractors to play on, as well as coin-operated go-carts.

Matlock Meadows indoor play

You must try the award-winning Italian style gelato, which is made on site. There are 15 flavours to choose from and each and every one is absolutely delicious (not that I’ve tried them all… yet)! There are also dairy free and gluten fee ice-creams available.

7. Matlock Bath Aquarium and Exhibitions

Located in a stunning Victorian building in the centre of Matlock Bath, Matlock Bath Aquarium houses over 50 species of fish as well as one of the largest public displays of holograms in Europe.

A large Victorian pool inside the building has been transformed into a thermal pool for Mirror, Common and Koi Carp. This water is at a constant 20°C and comes from a spring believed to be 2000 ft below ground. Poolside vending machines sell food that you can feed to the carp.

It is also the site of the only remaining petrifying well in Matlock Bath. This is where thermal water was sprayed on to objects to turn them in to stone during the Victorian era. You can see almost 100 objects that have been petrified in the well including a bowler hat and pint glass, which are originals from the old Victorian wells.

Other exhibitions here include a worldwide gemstone and fossil display, the ‘Past Times in Matlock Bath’ Exhibition, and a private collection of Goss and Crested China.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour for your visit. It’s a good idea to combine this with a visit to Bonkers Illumination Golf.

Do note that there are no toilets or baby changing facilities.

8. Bonkers Illumination Golf

READ: Bonkers Illumination Golf REVIEW

Bonkers Illumination Golf  is a fun-filled venue, with nine holes of mini-golf, neon-lights, and challenging holes for adults and kids alike. Each hole has a separate theme, requirement a different technique. In the past, some courses we’ve played became a bit ‘samey’ after a couple of holes, but we had no such trouble here.

Bonkers Illumination Golf, Matlock

At the end, you’ll find a licensed bar and café for tasty snacks, giving you the chance to count up the scores and celebrate the winner.

Allow at least 30 minutes for a family of four to complete the crazy-golf course.

9. Peak District Mining Museum

Galena, lead ore, has been mined in the Peak District since before Roman times. Until the 20th century many families in the area earned a basic living from this mineral. Situated in the Grand Pavilion of Matlock Bath, at the Peak District Mining Musuem you can learn more about this industry and how it shaped the landscape, and experience underground conditions at the authentic 1920s Temple Mine.

Take a guided tour underground into the Temple Mine to see mine workings from the 1920s, 1950s, and some from over 200 years ago, as well as the tools that were used. There are some low ceilings here and uneven floors, so hard hats are provided. This tour last for about one hour. After the mine tour you will have the opportunity to try your hand at ‘gold panning’. Using a traditional style pan in water, you can find fool’s gold, galena and a variety of crystals which you can take home with you, although don’t expect to find any real gold!

The museum section houses thousands relics from the lost lead industry, displayed in a thought-provoking and interactive exhibition. These include hundreds of rock and mineral specimens from around the world. Kids will love the three mock mine tunnels in the museum.

Check the website for ticket pricing. You can pay to go in the mine or museum separately, or you can do both .

10. Eat fish ‘n’ chips

Even though it’s a very long way to any actual seaside (and no, there is no beach at Matlock Bath!), there are no less than 8 fish ‘n’ chip cafes along it’s 800 metre ‘promenade’!

They’re all pretty much of a muchness, so pick whichever one you fancy. Question is, mushy peas or no mushy peas?

Hidden on the outskirts of Matlock, not many visitors to the area know that this place exists. Although this is a 15 minute drive from Matlock Bath, it didn’t feel right not including Crich Tramway Museum in our top things to do in Matlock, as it is one of the best attractions in the area. Enjoy unlimited rides on the electric vintage trams, woodland walks with kid-friendly activities, and an indoor and outdoor playground.

There is also a large exhibition hall of old trams, although you’re only allowed inside a couple of these, and a stroll along the recreated period street is a must. Many of the buildings along the street have been rescued from towns and cities across the UK, such as the Derby Assembly Rooms façade which came to Crich after a tragic fire, and the Red Lion Pub and Restaurant came all the way from Stoke and was re-built brick by brick.

Let’s start exploring the area with Matlock Bath, my favourite town.

Fun things to do in Matlock Bath

Matlock Bath was developed as one of the country’s first tourist attractions after the local spa waters were discovered in the 17th century.

places to visit in matlock

It still retains a lot of the charm of the time and, despite being 100 miles from the sea, it has a British seaside holiday resort feel. The amusement arcades, the rock and candy shops, and the fish and chips shops line up the parade along the river.

Here are the best things to do in Matlock Bath.

Heights of Abraham

The Heights of Abraham is undoubtedly the most exciting thing to do in Matlock Bath.

places to visit in matlock

A fun ride on the cable car takes you to the top of the hill where you have plenty of viewpoints over the Derwent Valley. My favourite was the panoramic views from the top of Victoria Prospect Tower, a folly that reminded me of Broadway Tower in the Cotswolds .

Aside from enjoying the views from high up, you can also visit the depths of the Masson Cavern, a part lead mine, part natural cavern located in a fault line. A guide tells you the fascinating history of this unusual place.

This tradition has been going on since the 1897 Venetian Fete to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, and it’s a must see if you happen to be in the area at the right time of the year.

Stroll along the Lover’s Walks

The Lovers’ Walks are a series of footpaths along the riverside and all the way up to High Tor. They’re about three quarters of a mile long.

The original Lovers’ Walks are believed to be the oldest surviving example of a public pleasure ground and has been in continuous use since the 1740s.

Eat fish and chips

Believe it or not, Matlock Bath is considered a seaside resort, complete with amusement arcades, rock and candy shops, and, of course, plenty of fish and chips shops.

In fact, there are at least ten fish and chips shops along the promenade by the riverside, so to give you the full seaside experience, eating fish and chips is a must.

Gulliver’s Kingdom

If you are visiting Matlock Bath with kids, Gulliver’s Kingdom is an obligatory stop. A theme park designed for children aged 3 to 13, it has rides and attractions that include the Lost World, Western World, Lilliput Land and Smugglers’ Wharf.

About Matlock and Matlock Bath

Located just south-east of the Peak District, Matlock and Matlock Bath are the gateways to the Peaks. Matlock Bath is situated about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) to the south of Matlock along the A6. It is ideally set in the stunning gorge of the River Derwent so no wonder that the poet, Lord Byron, gave it the nickname of ‘Little Switzerland’.

When you first enter the village you might feel like you are in a seaside town, but in reality you’re as far from the sea as you can be here. Seaside towns generally attract a lot more tourists since the water and fresh air have many health benefits. So why is Matlock Bath so touristy you might wonder? Well, from the 17th Century it slowly became a tourist paradise thanks to the spa waters which were discovered in 1698. As the news about the spa water spread across the country it started to attract aristocrats who would seek it out to improve their health. Even Queen Victoria visited Matlock a few years before she became queen.

When Matlock Bath railway station was built in 1849, the place started to attract day trippers too, making the area the ultimate tourist destination.

How to get to Matlock and Matlock Bath

By Car:  Matlock and Matlock Bath are located approximately 9 miles (14 km) south-west of Chesterfield. They are located close to bigger cities such as Derby (19 miles), Sheffield (20 miles) and Nottingham (29 miles). Depending on your plans for the day you can park in either Matlock or Matlock Bath.

There are plenty of car parks in the area to choose from, but for reference I marked the one we parked at in Matlock on the map below. The majority of these car parks are pay and display ones. The one we stopped at cost £6 for the day.

If you don’t have your own car but would like to enjoy the freedom of a private vehicle, then you can always  hire a car  to get to Matlock.

Top Tip  – Even though there are many options for parking, watch out for long or short stay parking options. If you’re planning on exploring all day then I recommend parking at a long stay car park.

By Public Transport:  Luckily, public transport options to reach Matlock and Matlock Bath are excellent. If you’re from the area, you can arrive by bus. There are bus services to places such as Bakewell, Wirksworth and Derby.

You can also arrive to Matlock and Matlock Bath by train. Hourly services run to destinations such as Newark Castle, Derby and Nottingham. If you’re coming from further afield, I suggest you travel to one of these destinations first. Make sure to plan your journey with  Trainline  which also provides information on bus fares.

Top Tip  – If you’re planning on travelling across the UK by train a lot, then  check out s o me Railcard options   which allow you to save some pennies on your train fares.

Matlock and Matlock Bath Sightseeing Trail

Length of the route.

The great thing about Matlock and Matlock Bath isn’t just the fact that you can see and do a lot. It has an excellent walking trail option for those who love the outdoors as much as I do. You can easily see everything along a 10 km (6-7 miles) ‘sightseeing trail’.

Depending on your speed and how long you are spending at each feature or stopping for lunch, this route could take at least 5 hours to complete.

We started from a car park in Matlock and headed straight up to Pic Tor before heading towards High Tor. After descending High Tor we walked along Starkholmes Road/Willersley Lane for a while before taking Mill Road to Cromford Mill. After a short stopover at Cromford Mill we took the footpath that heads towards Matlock Bath. There’s plenty to do in Matlock Bath so we spent a little longer here exploring the place and stopping for some chips and gravy. From here there’s a footpath that takes you all the way to Matlock through the Heights of Abraham, before returning to your starting point.

Since many attractions were closed for the winter season plus additional places had limited visitor capacities due to restrictions, it was easy to complete this trail. However, I highly recommend spending a little longer in the area if you can truly explore it.

Level of Difficulty

The ‘sightseeing trail’ that we did is an easy to moderate route but you can complete it with a basic level of fitness. The paths are generally relatively easy to find and follow. However, you’ll be walking uphill and downhill constantly. After rain the paths can get very muddy and slippery too. Therefore, I recommend wearing the right footwear like trainers or boots. You’ll also have to cross and/or walk along the road and cross some fields.

Facilities Within Matlock and Matlock Bath

You’ll be spoilt by the number of facilities along this route. Since both Matlock and Matlock Bath are very touristy towns you’ll find everything you need along the way.

There are plenty of public toilets, picnic spots, restaurants, takeaways and other retail options like supermarkets and clothes shops.

After descending into Matlock Bath we were immediately hit by the well known smell of fish & chips. We couldn’t resist the inviting smell so grabbed some chips and gravy from one of the chippies. I bet you won’t be able to resist the great mixture of smells along the high street either.

What to Wear and Bring With You?

You are in the north of England so weather conditions can change quickly. If you just walk around Matlock and Matlock Bath you can even wear a dress if you wish. However if you decide to do the ‘sightseeing trail’, I highly recommend wearing proper walking shoes and more appropriate clothing.

Make sure to have some water with you if you’re doing the trail as you’ll be doing a lot of uphills. Have a few snacks with you, but there are plenty of opportunities to grab something to eat or drink so don’t forget your wallet/cards.

Also make sure to bring your facemask with you which you’ll need to use at indoor places. (It’s not mandatory, but I also prefer to wear my face cover in busy town centres!)

6 Things To Do in Matlock and Matlock Bath

There is plenty to do in the area, but I’ve collected 6 things you shouldn’t miss out on when you’re in Matlock or Matlock Bath. Many of these attractions are also along the ‘sightseeing trail’ so you can potentially do them all in one day.

1. Climb Pic Tor in Matlock

If you enjoy panoramic views but you don’t fancy climbing for hours, then I highly recommend visiting Pic Tor. In order to reach the summit, you’ll have to walk through Hall Leys Park which is considered one of the leading parks in the UK. From there continue towards Knowleston Gardens. Cross the footbridge over the River Derwent and carry on walking along the river. There will be a sign pointing towards Pic Tor, just before you reach Boat House Bridge. The path runs through the woodland and will lead you to the War Memorial which provides you with panoramic views of Matlock and beyond. You’ll also see Riber Castle from the summit. From here, if you’re following our ‘sightseeing trail’ you can carry on towards High Tor.

2. Climb High Tor in Matlock

Without doubt one of the main things to do when visiting Matlock or Matlock Bath is to climb up to High Tor.  High Tor is a limestone crag and at 300 feet (92 m) it’s one of the highest inland cliffs in England.

Since the cliff is full of minerals, mining took place here for centuries. Lead was mined here since Roman times. Therefore, it has many mines with Fern and the Roman Caves being the most well known ones. Due to health and safety concerns these have been closed to the public.

High Tor used to be owned by Peter Arkwright, the grandson of Sir Richard Arkwright who was founder of Cromford Mill, another attraction in the area. The number of visitors arriving to Matlock Bath grew significantly in the 18th and 19th century when the thermal waters were discovered. When the railway was introduced in 1849 day trippers started to appear too. Due to the pressure of growing tourism, High Tor was opened to the public.

When you reach the summit, you’ll be treated with some pretty amazing views of the area. You’ll be able to see Matlock and Matlock Bath and the Heights of Abraham which is another iconic feature in the area.

Giddy Ledge – The Scariest Footpath in Britain?

You have two options when descending from High Tor. There’s the ‘safe’ way and there’s the more adventurous way along the cliff ledge called ‘Giddy Ledge’ . Obviously, we chose to walk along Giddy Ledge, which I’ve seen referred to as ‘Britain’s scariest footpath’.

For me personally it wasn’t scary at all, but I can definitely see why many people choose to take the safer path. You are 300 ft up on a sheer cliff edge after all and will be walking along a path that is sometimes only a few inches wide. There’s a metal handrail though to help you keep your balance.

Please Note! – Please don’t attempt to walk along Giddy Ledge if you have a fear of heights, without wearing the right footwear, or if the weather conditions aren’t great. Whilst it wasn’t scary for me, I wouldn’t have done it if the path looked wet or icy and the wind had been stronger. Better to be safe than sorry!

3. Discover the Heights of Abraham

Another must-see feature along the trail is the Heights of Abraham . It is a 60 acre woodland estate on top of Masson Hill offering panoramic views of Matlock Bath and beyond. It is listed as grade II in the register of historic parks and gardens of special historic interest.

Originally the hill was a lead mining site until the 1700s. After mining activities had stopped the caverns became tourist attractions. You can now take a guided tour around the two show caverns called Great Masson and Rutland Cavern , watch some films about them and walk around the photography gallery.

You can also walk up to the top of The Victoria Prospect Tower which was built in 1844 providing 360 degree views of the Derbyshire Dales.

Access to the Heights of Abraham is either on foot or by cable car. The cable car was opened in 1984 and it’s definitely a fun way to reach the hill.

Since the site is privately run, you’ll need to purchase tickets  even if you decide to walk up to it on foot. The cable car fee includes the ride itself, the attractions and the cavern tours. Please note that the cable cars and the attractions are only open between March and November, and closed during the winter season.

4. Explore Matlock Bath

If you’re just passing by, I highly recommend at least to walk along Lovers’ Walk and grab a bite to eat. Lovers’ Walk was created around 1742 and many people think that the trail is the oldest surviving example of a public pleasure ground. The 3/4-mile route contains a series of footpaths running along the River Derwent all the way up to High Tor. Since the walk is connected to Derwent Gardens I highly recommend combining your walk with a visit to the garden.

However, if you have a bit longer then there are a few more attractions to check out, depending on the kind of adventure you seek.

One of the coolest things Matlock Bath offers is the ‘Matlock Bath Illuminations’ event which has been taking place annually for over 120 years. It features the decorated and illuminated boats produced by the members of the Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders Association. The illuminations run every weekend between the months of September and October at Derwent Gardens.

Many families come to enjoy Gulliver’s Kingdom which is a theme park founded by Ray Phillips in 1978. He created the park as a model village for his children and today it is aimed at children between the age of 3 and 13. The theme park is still owned by the family and now has a couple of sister theme parks in Warrington, Milton Keynes and Rotherham.

Visiting Matlock Bath Aquarium and Exhibitions is another fun activity you can do in Matlock Bath. In the beautiful Victorian building you can discover 50 species of fish, a collection of fossils and gemstones and the largest public display of Holograms in Europe.

5. Learn About the History of Cromford Mills

Located in Cromford, just over 1 mile (2 km) to the south of Matlock Bath is Cromford Mills. It was built by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1771 and it’s considered the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill.

Sir Richard Arkwright was developing the mill up until 1790. Later, in 1840, the water supply put a limitation on the textile production. As a result, the buildings within the mill complex were put to other uses such as cheese warehousing, laundry facilities and a brewery. Nearly 100 years later, in 1922, it was used as a colour works, producing colour pigments for paints and dyes. The buildings were in bad condition after the colour works stopped production. Even the Local Authorities believed that Cromford Mills had lost its historical significance.

However, new archeological research has been conducted since then which revealed the true value of Cromford Mills. As a result, the site is now listed as Grade I and is also part of  Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can take a tour around Cromford Mills to learn more about its history. Of course, due to restrictions, the tours aren’t running but you can keep up-to-date on the website.  Luckily, we could still enter the outdoor part of the complex for free where we could look around, use the toilet facilities and grab a hot drink.

6. Stroll Along Cromford Canal

After exploring Cromford Mills, another great activity is to walk along Cromford Canal. It is designated as a Biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. The canal walk starts just across from Cromford Mills at Wheatcroft’s Wharf where you can grab some refreshments.

The 5-mile (8 km) long path runs along Derwent Valley, between Ambergate and Cromford. It passes through High Peak Junction , the village of  Whatstandwell and  Leawood Pump House which was built in 1849 to supply water.

You’ll also pass Shining Cliff Woods which is an ancient woodland with many unique features such as Betty Kenny’s ancient oak tree.

Our initial plan was to explore Shining Cliff Woods and walk through Cromford Canal, but we soon realised that it was a way too ambitious plan, especially considering the amount of daylight we had in December. Therefore, we decided to cut our walk short and only visit Cromford Mills before heading over to Matlock Bath.

Final Thoughts on Matlock and Matlock Bath

Although not everything was operating during the winter months, Matlock Bath still managed to steal my heart. Since I personally prefer visiting places during the off season, I probably enjoyed my visit even more than I would’ve in the heights of summer. There are just so many interesting and unique things to do there, that I’m not surprised that this place becomes a tourist paradise in summer.

Since we could only do so much in one day, we’re already planning our return trip in early spring when more attractions will reopen again, so stay tuned for a second part to this blog post.

Have you ever been to Matlock and Matlock Bath before? If so, which season did you visit in and how much of the area did you manage to explore? Let me know in the comments below.

Lovely post Kitti! Despite the cold, it looks like you had an amaaazing weather for this. It looks like a great mix of touristy areas and pretty countryside. Mostly, I just like the look of Giddy Ledge!

Thank you Josy, yes we had a great time. Just love mixing the outdoors with some touristy bits. And I agree Giddy Ledge was my favourite part too.

Wow, I feel pretty stupid saying it but I didn’t even know where Matlock was, let alone how beautiful the area is! I’ve driven up and down the M1 many a time and seen the signs for the Heights of Abraham without much of a thought…I’ve been missing out! It definitely looks like an area I’d love to explore more! High Tor looks like an incredible hike! Thanks for the great guide!

Don’t worry Hannah, I’ve been exploring the Peaks for 5 years now and this was my first time in Matlock too. And had no idea about all of these amazing things you can do there. I hope you’ll be able to visit it too very soon 🙂

I’ve been hiking in this area and loved it! The village is so cute too.

So happy to hear that you loved it as much as I did. There’s just too much to do so I’ll definitely return once the restrictions are eased.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I am always looking for more places to go in the UK and now this is at the top of my list 🙂 such stunning pictures!

I’m so happy that my post inspired you to visit this area. I’m sure you’ll love it too 🙂

Oh my Giddy Aunt!! That Giddy ledge looks amazing! Thanks for this excellent post. I have driven through this area many times, but never done the walking/exploring, which looks and sounds great. I have been to Cromford Mills, really interesting site, and we did have a trip to Gullivers Kingdom many years ago! As you say, so much to do and see! Will definatley be revisiting in the future.

Thank you for your comment Karan, I’m so happy to hear that you visited some parts of the area already. I really enjoyed mixing the touristy and outdoorsy elements on this route and will definitely need to return for more. And yes, Giddy Ledge was definitely the highlight on this trail 🙂

Szia Kitti! Very good review and cannot wait to read more of your blog. Bw,Flora from Derbyshire 😀

Koszonom Flora, I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed my post. Hope you find my other posts just as useful 🙂

Dr. Matlock and his staff are the absolute BEST for family dental care! My family and I have been patients of Dr. Matlock for almost 20 years, and I would highly recommend this dental office if you are looking for the best dental service in the KC area!

I have been going to Dr Matlock for over twenty years, and I can't imagine having anyone else as a dentist. Not only is he an excellent and professional dentist, his office uses all the latest equipment and dental procedures. The entire office staff, including the dental hygienists and administrative personnel, makes for a great experience. I can't recommend any dentist higher than Dr Matlock.

Photo of Bree C.

I accidentally arrived 40min before my 1st appointment, & what I noticed waiting in the lobby was: the people who had appointments before me were genuinely happy to see the hygienists that called them back for their appointment. The 1st time I thought it had to be an anomaly, but I watched multiple folks go in & witnessed the same genuine happiness. I originally picked this new dental provider because I'm an art lover and could tell the office valued art & lighting of art from website pics--for me I thought if I have to go to the dentist I might as go to a place that will sooth, inspire or at least provide a beautiful distraction. The art did NOT disappoint & I was even offered a tour to see the stunning, early work of Susie Ford! By the end of my appointment I understood why folks were smiling & genuinely happy. My hygienist was patient, kind, gentle, thorough, & explained dental stuff & my xrays in a clear & expert way. It literally was the best 'customer service' & vibe that I've ever experienced in a dental office. To top it off: when I left my mouth felt cleaner than it has in a decade (my previous dentist only used a water pic deal & polish deal.). For me, the 5 stars was a hands down, no-brained. I'd give 10 stars if the option was there.
