Five things on no. 16 at tpc scottsdale: the details, the party and more, share this article.

pga tour players that live in scottsdale

A party. A par-3. The loudest scene in golf. A chance to cut loose and show a very different side of golf, where pros can interact with fans in ways not seen anywhere else. A chance to elicit wild cheers, or maybe lose a tournament to the sound of boos late in the final round.

Called the Coliseum, No. 16 at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course is many things to different people. What the atmosphere is most of all, especially to those who attend, is unforgettable – assuming they haven’t been overserved.

Dubbed the People’s Open, the WM Phoenix Open – rebranded this year to condense Waste Management to WM – has been played at the Stadium Course since 1987. And it has become for many the can’t-miss event on the PGA Tour calendar.

And the 16 th is the star of a show that can host more than 200,000 fans in a day. The event no longer offers up statistics on fan attendance since the 2019 event, but on Saturday in 2018, more than 216,000 fans attended the event.

Not to be lost in all the noise and revelry is that the Thunderbirds, the charitable organization that operates the event, has raised more than $160 million and counting for Arizona charities – No. 16 is great and all, but the numbers 1 and 6 look even better when followed by all those zeroes, in this case.

Also worth noting: The Stadium Course, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and opened in 1986, ranks No. 5 in Arizona on Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play list for public-access layouts. It will play at 7,261 yards with a par of 71. And with those details taken care of, check out several of the more-interesting themes of No. 16 – and what comes after.

No. 16, the golf hole

Waste Management Phoenix Open

No. 16 at the Stadium Course is listed as 163 yards on the tournament media guide’s scorecard, but it can be stretched past 170 depending on hole location and tee position.

In 2021 it played to a perfect 3.00 scoring average, giving up 68 birdies, 267 pars, 54 bogeys and seven double bogeys. It ranked as the seventh-hardest hole on the course.

Thanks to the yardage book  provided by StrackaLine  – the maker of detailed yardage books for thousands of courses around the world – we can see exactly the challenges the pros face this week, at least as far as the actual golf swings go. Check out the map of No. 16’s as a whole and another for the green below, and take a peek at the rest of the holes on the Stadium Course here .

No. 16, the scene

No. 16 is, of course, much more than a golf hole during tournament week. Think of it as a medium-length par 3, a corporate outing, the loudest spectacle in golf and a raging kegger all in one.

pga tour players that live in scottsdale

Fans gather behind the 16th hole at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. (Rob Schumacher/Arizona Republic)

The party atmosphere is legendary. Booze, cheers, long lines for the plastic outhouses, players goading on fans and vice-versa: There’s nothing else like it in golf, more concert than staid golf event. As a matter of fact, there was an actual concert on the fairway last week .

Some fans have made it an annual reunion, gathering to cheer and taunt. If a player hits the green, he is applauded. If he misses the green, expect the boos. Stick one close or, even better, in the hole, and the crowd goes nuts. Really nuts.

The golfers also play it up for the fans, often throwing out souvenirs or donning sports jerseys – especially those of Arizona teams. Players with local ties are frequently cheered the loudest. But with all that energy, so rare in golf, comes a price: Players have to be ready to swing when their turn comes.

pga tour players that live in scottsdale

Tournament organizers cap the crowd around No. 16 to 17,000 fans, and that’s plenty. Many are in corporate skyboxes built into the three-tier arena that surrounds the hole, and there are 3,750 general-admission bleacher seats. Fans rush to No. 16 as soon as the gates open each morning, and the general admission lines to enter No. 16 can stretch to four hours later in the day, as one fan must leave the arena for another to enter.

The corporate skyboxes offer a different experience with guaranteed entry for those with the right badges, but admission isn’t exactly cheap. The Skybox 16 Package, for example, costs $55,000 and includes 34 credentials per day, breakfast and lunch each day plus an open bar, 20 general admission tickets per day and an assortment of valet parking passes. All of those skyboxes were sold out for 2022.

No. 16, the aces

The 16 th has been the site of nine holes-in-one over the decades. As a stock broker might tell you, past performance is not a great predictor of future success, but you might want to pay extra attention in Saturday’s third round, as five of those nine aces have come in third rounds.

Phoenix Open 1997

The 16th tee box is covered by beer cans and cups thrown by fans celebrating a hole-in-one by Tiger Woods at the 1997 Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. (The Arizona Republic)

Worth noting, of course, is Tiger Woods’ ace in 1997. It definitely led to one of the most raucous scenes in PGA Tour history, as detailed by Golfweek’s Steve DiMeglio in a story commemorating the 25 th anniversary of that shot heard round the world.

Here are all nine of the aces on 16:

  • 1988: Hal Sutton, third round
  • 1990: David Edwards, third round
  • 1990: Brad Bryant, first round
  • 1991: Jay Delsing, third round
  • 1997: Tiger Woods, third round
  • 1997: Steve Stricker, fourth round
  • 2002: Mike Sposa, second round
  • 2011: Jarrod Lyle, second round
  • 2015: Francisco Molinari, third round

No. 16, worth remembering

No. 16 is also home to one of our favorite stories in recent years. Amy Bockerstette, who has Down syndrome, played the 16th hole with professional Gary Woodland in a 2019 practice round leading up to the tournament.

After Bockerstette, 20, hit her tee shot into a bunker, she confidently said “I got this” and proceeded to blast out to about 10 feet. She drained the putt for a par and went on to become a sensation.

"Amy … you're our hero." How a superstar named Amy teamed up with @GaryWoodland to win the hearts of the 16th hole crowd @WMPhoenixOpen . #LiveUnderPar pic.twitter.com/iRhZbvdjuP — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) January 30, 2019

Later that year, she told Woodland “You got this” before he went on to win the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Hollywood screenwriters couldn’t make this stuff up. Hearts melted for the inspirational golfer, who played college golf at Paradise Valley Community College and became the first athlete with Down syndrome to compete in a national collegiate athletic championship.

It’s a few moments worth remembering, and Golfweek even named Amy’s dad, Joe, as Father of the Year in 2019.

Following No. 16

As cool as No. 16 is, the 17 th might be even better for those as interested in the golf as in the party. The 332-yard par 4 is within reach off the tee for Tour pros, but a lake just left of the green presents all kinds of headaches.

pga tour players that live in scottsdale

While the par-3 16 th is fairly straightforward – a short or mid-iron onto the green, or not – despite the crowds and all the noise, the 17 th presents options. After the commotion on No. 16, players better have a game plan in place before tackling 17, especially on Sunday with the tournament title on the line.

Many players will hit driver, which can bound over the green and into a bunker or even the lake. Other players will try to run up a 3-wood onto the front, avoiding a centerline bunker and the water short left. Others might lay well back and take their chances with a wedge approach shot, but the fans aren’t gathered to watch layups.

The scores are all over the place on 17, which is great fun to watch. The hole played to a 3.737 scoring average in 2021 with eight eagles, 157 birdies, 174 pars, 47 bogeys, eight double bogeys and two triple bogeys. It ranked as the fourth easiest hole on the course.

No. 17 was also the site of the only hole-in-one on a par 4 in PGA Tour history. Andrew Magee did it in the first round in 2001, using driver to knock his ball into the jar and himself into the history book.

Again thanks to StrackaLine, check out the details for No. 17 below.

Four things to know about the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale

Pat Ralph

The PGA Tour continues its West Coast swing this week when it heads to Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open . The event, which is also known as ”The Greatest Show on Grass”, has been held at the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale since 1987. Here’s everything you need to know about one of the most fan-friendly courses on the Tour schedule .

pga tour players that live in scottsdale

The origin of the course:  The PGA Tour commissioned course designers Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish to build a new course to host the Phoenix Open that was similar to that of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the home of the Players Championship . The goal was that every spectator at the event could have a good view of the tournament. Thus, in 1986, the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale opened for business. The following year, it began hosting the Phoenix Open and has so for over 30 years.

The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale has played host to the Waste Management Phoenix Open since 1987.

The design of the course: The par-71, desert-style course runs 7,266 yards from the championship tees and offers golfers four different tees to use. The championship black tees, the players blue tees, the resort white tees, and the forward red tees are all available to players at the Stadium Course, which has three  par-5’s and four par-3’s . The course features forgiving fairways, considerably large greens which run fast, and over 70 bunkers that are strategically placed in the fairways and around the greens. The fairways and greens are both made from TiffDwarf grass. Another intriguing component to the course is the role of water, which comes into play on six of the course’s holes.

Longest holes on the course: T he par-5 third and 13th holes both run 558 yards from the championship tees.

Shortest hole on the course:  T he iconic par-3 16th hole runs 163 yards from the championship tees . We’ll have more on this famous hole later this week.

Get your vocal cords ready. It’s time for the rowdiest and wildest event on the PGA Tour. The WM Phoenix Open is back with an impressive field and beer-balls ready to go . As we head into Super Bowl weekend, this is the perfect way to gear up for the big game.

This year’s event will see Scottie Scheffler looking for a third straight win at TPC Scottsdale after a closing six-under 65 gave him a two-shot victory over Nick Taylor in 2023. It was Scheffler’s fifth PGA Tour title and lifted him back to World No. 1. He became the seventh golfer in tournament history to back-to-back.

Some top-ranked players looking to stop Scheffler’s winning ways include Wyndham Clark (last week’s winner at Pebble), Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Brian Harman, Jordan Spieth, Tom Kim, Justin Thomas and Sam Burns. JT is coming off of two top-10 finishes and could be gearing up for his first win since the 2022 PGA Championship.

The WM Phoenix Open will also be the last chance for pros to qualify into next week’s Genesis Invitational, a PGA Tour signature event, via the Aon Swing 5 in which the top five FedEx Cup points earners not already exempt can forge their own path to Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles. Matthieu Pavon, Grayson Murray, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Kevin Yu and Stephan Jaeger are the current top five, while Jake Knapp trails Jaeger by just 48 points.

The winner this week in the Arizona desert will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.584 million share of the $8.8 million purse.

Scottsdale, Arizona: World’s Finest Golf Destination

Posted by Nina Africano | Jun 5, 2016 | Events , Featured , Golf , Travel |

Scottsdale, Arizona: World’s Finest Golf Destination

Scottsdale calls itself the world’s finest golf destination – and the numbers seem to back up the claim. More than 330 days of sunshine each year and almost 200 public golf courses add up to a golfer’s paradise.

The fact that more than 40 current and former PGA and LPGA TOUR professionals live here attests to the quality of the courses.

A recently conducted market study found the number of rounds played in Scottsdale was up approximately three percent in 2014 compared to 2013. (This comes at a time when participation in golf across North America has been generally flat.)

Over the past few months three of Scottsdale’s most popular courses have undergone significant transformations.

At the iconic Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club , three of the final four holes will be remodeled to enhance playability and ensure an exceptional golf experience well into the future. Designer Tom Fazio reworks his original design by recounting holes 15, 16 and 17, bringing them in closer proximity to the rest of the course and giving golfers more options as they head into the home stretch.

SunRidge Canyon Golf Club , considered among the “Top 20 Best Courses You Can Play” in Arizona by GOLF Magazine , embarked on a summer-long project to further bolster the course’s status. Primarily, this work consisted of rebuilding and resurfacing the putting greens with Champion Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass, while softening undulations to give SunRidge Canyon some of the fastest, best-rolling greens in the state. A number of bunkers were redesigned and the fairway landing areas were expanded on holes 2, 3 and 11. The practice area was expanded to accommodate a new home for Hot Stix Golf, a leader in technology-based golf club fitting.

The former Tegavah Golf Club in northeast Scottsdale has a new name and new ownership to go along with an ongoing redesign by PGA TOUR star and former Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman. The club was purchased by Shea Homes of Arizona and renamed Verde River Golf & Social Club . Though eventually it will be a private club, Verde River will welcome daily-fee guests for the next several years. Lehman is enhancing the golf course, focusing his efforts on rebuilding green complexes and bunkers, as well as modifying the sequencing and routing of several holes to enhance the overall golf experience. The finished product, as well as a new clubhouse by award-winning designer Bing Hu, will be unveiled November 2016.

Upcoming Tournaments

The Champions Tour concludes its season on Scottsdale’s Desert Mountain Golf Club’s Cochise Course during the The Charles Schwab Cup Championship November 5-8. The top 30 players on the Tour’s official money list – and some of the most accomplished players in PGA TOUR history – compete for the title, as well as their shares of the $2.5 million purse.

Entry into the championship event is based on points earned throughout the Champions Tour season at all official Charles Schwab Cup events. Among those expected to compete are Jeff Maggert, Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, Marco Dawson and Esteban Toledo.

Also beginning in November, the Thunderbirds and the PGA TOUR will begin work to prepare the TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course for the Greatest Party on Grass, the 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Work will commence to build the grandstands and stadium style seating necessary to accommodate the largest galleries of any golf event in the world. During this time, the course will remain open for public play, giving visitors to Scottsdale a unique opportunity to play a true TOUR-quality venue leading into the main event February 1-7, 2016.

Building Better Golfers

Scottsdale remains a hotbed for game improvement. Long-time stalwarts such as the Fore-Max Golf Fitness program at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, as well as technology-based testing, diagnostic and club-fitting services like Cool Clubs, remain as popular and effective as ever.

Among the new additions is the EXOS Golf Experience Powered by Troon. This three-day immersive program tailors EXOS’ elite training program (clients include San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and PGA TOUR professionals Graham DeLaet, Ricky Barnes and James Hahn) to meet the individual needs of amateur players. Training and evaluations are done both at EXOS’ training facilities and Troon North Golf Club.

Participants receive highly individualized instruction by EXOS’s integrated team of golf instructors, performance specialists, registered dietitians and physical therapists. This results in a fitness program designed to optimize individual performance and health for years to come.

Another high-tech option is the Robo Golf Pro Boot Camp at Scottsdale’s Boccieri Golf. Boccieri’s Research and Performance Center offers an intense, three-day program of golf instruction and analysis. Its centerpiece is an 800-pound technical marvel:the Robo Golf Instructor. This behemoth and its custom-designed computer program allows Boccieri’s team to program physically correct golf swings based upon physique and ability.

As a result, participants are able to feel the proper positioning and sequence of their perfect swing. With repetition and personalized coaching, the new swing becomes ingrained through muscle memory. Limited to four players per session, the Boot Camp aims to provide immediate improvement and includes Titleist Performance evaluation, daily session on the Robo Golf Pro, one round of golf at Desert Mountain with Boccieri teaching professionals and a complimentary custom-fit Heavy Putter.
