South Africa Tours & Vacations
The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliche
But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside Europe and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much Africa into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your safari with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.
South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn, but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs
South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from Europe and Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.
The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavors and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident, and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travelers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Foods to try in South Africa
South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.
With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.
Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.
4. Boerewors
Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavored with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment
South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment.
Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.
History and government
Early history.
The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.
The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.
Recent history
More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

Journey Type
Cities and landmarks.
Cape Town. Cape Winelands, Kruger, Kalahari
The South Africa Signature Itinerary presents the discerning traveler with the opportunity to experience a sophisticated glimpse of the country’s diverse heritage.
The adventure allows sojourns in 4 distinctive regions – each carefully selected to reflect something of the Rainbow Nations’ proud cultural and natural diversity.
The entrée in this mouth-watering extravaganza is Cape Town – rated by Fodors, Forbes, and Conde Nast, along with countless international visitors, as one of the top destinations worldwide. And we have no doubt that your first impressions of the city, resplendent at the foot of Table Mountain will concur.
You will then find yourself transported to the Cape Winelands – a region where French refugees, among them accomplished vintners, settled in the late 1600s, finding the climate and soils conducive to the production of world-class wines.
Across this vast land, you’ll next be brought to the renowned Greater Kruger wilderness, to visit a land touched by visionaries, both in their approach to conservation and their contemporary interpretation of safari.
Next, you will journey to the arid interior, to a desert environment as old as time – the Kalahari. The stark contrast of this surprisingly vibrant habitat, juxtaposed with the opulent comforts of the Tswalu Motse Lodge is a feast for the senses.
Throughout an all too short fortnight, you will join the ranks of those who’ve come to love and celebrate Africa. It is a land of parallels – both stark and beautiful. A land of diversity – in culture and wildlife. And yet, it has a signature all of its’ own.
- Explore Explore Cape Town's diverse neighborhoods, rich history, and iconic landmarks.
- Savor a taste of France in Africa amidst the scenic beauty of the Cape Winelands.
- Embark on a lavish South Africa safari tour, exploring two diverse habitats teeming with abundant wildlife.
Arrive in Cape Town South Africa
On arrival in Cape Town, you will be chauffeured to Ellerman House, which will serve as your base for the duration of your time in the Mother City.
Regal on the slopes of the Cape mountains, Ellerman House commands sweeping views of the Atlantic ocean and adjacent seaboard. This exclusive destination offers guests a refined home away from home experience, which despite the abundant nearby attractions, might prove difficult to leave.
A family-owned establishment – the emphasis is on understated and personalized service, in a relaxed ambience. Embracing the grandeur of eras past, while offering every imaginable amenity, your stay is sure to be as memorable as it is luxuriantly comfortable.
With sweeping views of the sea, each of the rooms has been individually styled and is elegantly furnished with all the creature comforts and modern amenities you could wish for.
The facilities and services abound with everything from spa treatments to concierge assistance, all provided. Be sure to visit the Wine and Art galleries. An Ellermans’ highlight is the celebrated and exclusive restaurant, where you will be thrilled by the delectable diversity to tempt your palate.
Ellerman House
Refreshed and ready to explore one of the worlds’ most celebrated city destinations, the next two full days will be spent in the care of experienced local guides. Cape Town is the gateway to the greater Cape Peninsula, arcing south into the Atlantic. To orient you, you will visit the level plateau of Table Mountain, reached by cable car.
European settlers first arrived in the 1600s and established a replenishment station to replenish passing ships. Over time it was populated by a diverse array of nationalities, from the Dutch, French and English, to the Malay, each of which influenced its evolving culture. This is still in evidence today, and your guide will take you to many of the landmarks that reflect this past – from the menacing castle to the flamboyantly painted houses of Bo-Kaap.
You will have the opportunity to browse the market in historic Greenmarket Square, stroll the cool acreage of the Company Gardens. You might find yourself captivated too, by the varied languages, accents and dialects that abound – each reflecting a hue of Mandela’s Rainbow Nation.
The Cape Peninsula is essentially a mountain range that extends south from the city. Your guide will collect you from the hotel, and circumnavigate its entirety over a day. The cosmopolitan and trendy hangouts of Camps Bay and Clifton, soon give way to some of the most majestic roads and mountain passes, carved into the daunting landscape.
The peninsula is home to the most diverse family of plants on the planet – fynbos – and you will sense their fragrant tones as you stop off in the fishing village of Hout Bay, traverse the spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive. Feel the power of the southern ocean at Cape Point and hear the cacophony of a noisy penguin colony, en-route back to the hotel.
Cape Winelands Franschhoek
Next, you are transported to the verdant Franschhoek valley, where you will be welcomed to the opulent La Residence – a 30-acre vineyard and benchmark of local accommodation. Embracing both the French influence prevalent in the area, and the homely warmth of Africa, La Residence is the ideal departure point from which to explore the surrounding landscape.
With just eleven rooms and 5 individually curated suites, you are assured of every luxury and amenity you could wish for. Surrounded by beautiful artworks and antique furnishings, you will feel cocooned in a tranquil sanctuary.
Add to this an obvious commitment and passion for the culinary arts, and you will feel assured that your every comfort has been thought of and intuitively catered to. The on-site Terrace Restaurant is renowned for the creativity that wafts from the kitchen in glorious scents. The presentation is impeccable and the flavors are heavenly. Guests are encouraged to visit, either as observers, or to discuss personalized menus.
Naturally, there is a strong theme devoted to wines and wine-making, and there is plentiful guidance on hand to navigate the multitude of varieties available.
A shimmering pool, expansive gardens, a glamorous spa, cycling routes, and browsing the various shops, restaurants, galleries and wine cellars are but a few of the ways one can enjoy the sedate pleasures of the estate and the nearby village.
A wine tour in the company of an experienced oenologist is an opportunity not to be missed. You will visit many of the historic wineries of the region, some dating back as far as the late 1600s when the vineyards were first laid out in the rich soils.
The surprising presence of a rich wine culture in South Africa is thanks to the fortuitous arrival of French Huguenot refugees hundreds of years ago, who settled the land when they discovered the right mix of climate, terrain and soil conducive to wine-making. Today the industry is ever-evolving; bringing the latest pioneering biodynamic and organic practices to bear while staying true to the essence of this ancient tradition. You’ll be pleased to know most of the products you will see can be shipped directly to your doorstep.
La Residence
Kruger National Park
Immerse yourself in South Africa’s rich culture, blending contemporary influences, and set off to explore the abundant fauna and flora. Fly to the Greater Kruger National Park gateway, where a private charter awaits to transport you to Singita Game Reserve’s elegant Boulders Lodge. The lodge represented a turning point in the luxury South Africa safari tour sector in the mid-90s when traditional safari and ultra-luxurious travel combined to welcome the sophisticated traveler.
From its dramatic setting amid ancient boulders clustered along a river’s course, you will soon feel part of the scenery as giraffes sway gently by and skittish antelope scatter in alarm. Renowned in particular for intimate leopard sightings, this land oozes Africa.
This is reflected in the 12 suites – spacious, comfortable, cool – each offering privacy and a front-row seat to the ever-changing vistas.
An epicurean extravaganza is interspersed with excursions led by seasoned Ranger/Tracker teams, walks that highlight natures’ intricate design, curated wellness and pampering, and moments of wonder as you contemplate the vast dome of stars that envelopes the night.
The day starts before sunrise when you depart on the first of two open-vehicle game drives during which the Ranger and Tracker team up to interpret the overnight evidence of passing wildlife.
Like a broker scanning financial indicators before markets open, they read the land for signs of its iconic residents – the Big 5; lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Their tracks and other signs vie for attention in an exciting trade-off – and it is up to the skill of your guides to “close the deal” by interpreting them; perhaps tracking down a pride of lion, lying scattered in the spreading shade of an acacia. Or you might hit the jackpot witnessing a leopards’ raw power dragging prey up a tree, or the organized chaos of Painted Wolves on the prowl.
The excitement starts over in the late afternoon, and in the intervening hours, while many take a siesta, you might choose to accompany your ranger on foot through the bush, learning about its hidden secrets.
Others choose to relax alongside their private pools. Wellness practitioners are available to take your relaxation and comfort to even loftier extremes. And if you can’t go a day with a little retail therapy, why not visit the exclusive gallery and cellar.
Singita Boulders Lodge
Kalahari Tswalu Reserve
Replete after breakfast, you are flown to Tswalu Private Game reserve. A total of 110,000 hectares of privately owned wilderness awaits you in the southern Kalahari desert. Tswalu offers guests an intimate South Africa safari tour experience – one that truly aspires to do away with time constraints and pressures for the duration of your three-night stay.
The accommodation at The Motse Lodge was created with inspiration from the surrounding environment. As such, the Legae – the local word for home – that you will stay in is largely built from raw materials sustainably sourced from the area.
Each Legae is positioned to afford you both privacy and views of the panoramic vistas. It has a private deck, with adequate shade and day-beds from which to scan for wildlife or drift off on a lazy siesta. The tones and textures of the land are incorporated into the styling of the accommodation, and careful thought is evident in the comfortable furnishings and facilities.
The central lodge building acts as a gathering place for meals, leisure and retail. There is a library, a spa, gym and wine cellar – and outside you will find two swimming pools. The inclusive meals are an adventure in their own right, with the chef proudly unveiling a startling array of gastronomic delights over the course of the day – served al fresco, private or even remote desert settings.
Tswalu Reserve stands out among its peers for both the endemic species to be found and the rigorous devotion to preserving the environment through research-led land management. Your wildlife encounters will be wonderfully varied and the reserve is home to magnificent black-maned lion, cheetah, painted wolves, as well as myriads of antelope. Rarities include black rhinoceros, brown hyena and more.
There are few places left where the vast spaces are as uncluttered, where the sound of the breeze serves as a tonic, and the vast dome of stars each evening, evoke such a sense of wonder.
A further attraction of the safari activities at Tswalu is the flexibility. Dedicated safari vehicles allow you to curate a schedule entirely devoted to your interests and timeline. You will have the opportunity to walk in the wilderness, where your guides will emphasize the lesser-known fauna and flora of the reserve. You may participate in active conservation and research projects, while a sunrise visit to the den of habituated meerkats is a special treat.

South Africa Attractions & Landmarks Guide
Spanning nine provinces and eight UNESCO heritage sites, South Africa is a haven for adventure seekers, history buffs, naturalists, wine connoisseurs, and hikers, among many others.
The smallest province, Gauteng, is the most densely populated and hosts a powerhouse of attractions, including Johannesburg (the largest city) and the township of Soweto, site of the anti-apartheid 1976 uprisings. Johannesburg, which was built on the discovery of gold in 1886, hosts the Apartheid Museum, which documents South Africa’s freedom struggle. Just outside the city, the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site contains some of the most important paleo-anthropological discoveries in the world, with 14 excavated fossil sites and 200 unexplored caves.
What to see in Cape Town
Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities, sitting right off the Atlantic Ocean . For views of the city and the ocean, hike up Table Mountain . If hiking isn’t your thing, there is also a cable car that will take you to the top and back down.
Note, you’ll have to take the cable car back down Table Mountain, even if you hike. It’s too steep to hike back down. Another great options for unbeatable views is Signal Hill. Drive or walk to the top of the hill, to be met with views of the city, the ocean, and Table Mountain.
Watch the sunrise over Table Mountain, or the sun set over the Atlantic. You can even paraglide off of Signal Hill! This makes for a great alternative hike, because it isn’t as steep as Table Mountain.
There is plenty of outdoor activities in Cape Town , and opportunity to see wildlife and plants. Visit the Kirstenbosch Arboretum , sitting on the south side of the of the base of Table Mountain. Many travelers make this a single day trip, starting their morning at the Arboretum, and winding up the hiking trail to the top of Table Mountain.
The Kirstenbosch Arboretum is a botanical garden. Winning the “International Garden of the Year” award in 2015. Also at the garden is the treetop canopy walkway, known as the “Boomslang,” winning another title in 2015, the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa. Another must visit in Cape Town is the Cape of Good Hope and Boulder Beach, home of the “penguin beach.”
Check out the hundreds of penguins up close (the beach is closed off, but plenty of close viewing points) who like to chill out on the beach. You’ll even catch a few who like to wander over to the ocean, and be swept back by the waves onto the beach. Another great day trip is to Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was held captive for nearly two decades before being released.
A must visit is the Cape Winelands . Visit the Stellenbosch/Franschoek region for some relaxing time outside the city. Take the wine tram and visit multiple wineries throughout the region. Enjoy the small town filled with shops and restaurants, while taking in the views.
You may get to spot some wildlife! Up in the higher hills of the wineland, there are signs saying beware of the baboons. It’s not uncommon to come across baboons in the road while in South Africa. Make sure to stay on the lookout! Another highly recommended area nearby is Camps Bay, a neighborhood in Cape Town.
Sitting on the beach, this luxurious area (think Beverly Hills) is home to great shopping, plenty of restaurants, the beach, and awesome views. Stroll through the neighborhood and admire the fancy cars and beautiful homes that overlook the ocean.
What to see in Johannesburg
Johannesburg is one of the most popular cities in South Africa. Johannesburg is also intense, so it’s important to be aware of what areas you should and shouldn’t visit. Not to say this should dissuade you from the city, because there are some awesome spots.
Just be careful of your surroundings. A popular neighborhood is the Maboneng Precinct , filled with food, markets, trendy shopping and art. Another great neighborhood is the Sandton neighborhood. South Africa has had a rough past, and one way to learn about this is by visiting Soweto .
You can also find the Mandela House in Soweto. A visit to the Apartheid Museum allows visitors to learn about the apartheid era through exhibits (warning, some are graphic). A great option for families is Gold Reef City, an amusement park based on the gold mining industry.
Johannesburg has plenty of markets, that depend on the day of the week. One popular market, the Market on Main , happens on Sundays. Saturday offers the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein, filled with innovative foods. Food from across the globe is sold here, as well as different arts and souvenirs.
If you’re in Johannesburg, consider checking out the Administrative capital of South Africa, Pretoria. There is a botanical garden, a zoo, and numerous nature reserves.
The Western Cape
Many tours take in the Western Cape’s natural attractions, including Cape Point, home to scenic bays, beaches, rolling hills and valleys. Cape Point falls within the Cape Floral region, which harbors nearly 20 percent of Africa’s flora. Along the province's eastern coastline lies the picturesque Garden Route, which stretches from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The perfect end to a Garden Route tour is a visit to the Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth.
South Africa’s main beach scene runs north and south of Durban on the east coast. To the west sprawls the Cultural and Natural World Heritage Site uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, home to the Drakensberg, South Africa's largest mountain range and more than 600 rock-art sites, with paintings by the San people who once roamed here. The province is the heart of the Zulu Kingdom.
Game Drives in South Africa
Kruger National Park (Africa’s oldest) is one of the most well known safari destinations in the world. This is a great option for those looking to do a self-guided tour, since the paths are well-marked. Guided tours are also a smart option, because the guides know the park, and know what to look like. There are safari options for people who are on a budget, as well as those who are looking to splurge on this opportunity.
For wildlife spotting, including the Big Five, Kruger is the place. Tours typically include morning and evening game drives and bush walks -- and often add on scenic drives along the waterfall-and-mountain-laden Panorama Route as well as deep Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest canyons on earth.
Pilanesburg National Park
Sitting about 2.5-3 hours northwest of Johannesburg is Pilanesberg National Park. This is a great option for those who want a closer safari than Kruger, since drive time is about half of what it would take to get to Kruger. S
tride Travel Writer Brooke stayed at Bakubung Bush Lodge in March 2019 when she went to South Africa. She raved about the gorgeous views, the incredible brunch and dinner buffets, and her overall stay. The lodge offers sunrise and sunset drives, when the animals are most active and you get away from the sweltering heat.
Groups are usually capped off at 16 per vehicle, making for an intimate experience. Many people go to Kruger park because it’s so well known, but Brooke highly recommends considering a visit to Pilanesberg.
The Garden Route
A spectacular way to see the diverse landscapes of South Africa is the Garden Route . The Garden Route stretches from the Storms River to Mossel Bay, and can continue up to Cape Town.
See the gorgeous landscapes of South Africa, including beaches and rivers, forests and mountains, and potential for wildlife sightings (Travelstride Writer, Brooke, encountered baboons on the road twice!). If you’re looking to add the Garden Route to your route, here are some places that are worth a visit:
1. Marine Big 5 Safari in Hermanus – a different type of safari, observe the “big 5” wildlife of the region: whale sharks, seals, penguins, dolphins and seabirds.
2. Wilderness National Park – great for hiking, canoeing, and visiting the beach. Where else can you see forest, mountains, and the oceans within 30 minutes of each other!? If you’re seeking adventure, consider tandem paragliding or canyoning in Wilderness.
3. Knysna Elephant Park – Homing and housing for orphaned African Elephants. An ethical way to see wildlife up close!
4. Plettenberg Bay is a great stop for whale and dolphin watching.
5. Another noteworthy visit – if you’re heading from George to Cape Town, take a detour to visit Cape L’aghulas . Take a photo where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, which is also the most southern point of the African continent!

Accommodation
The family owned 3 star Hotel La Pace in Forte dei Marmi is typical of the 3 star hotels we use on this holiday. The hotel is set in its own grounds and is close to the seafront. You will be warmly welcomed in this family-owned hotel and enjoy comfortable, well appointed accommodation with all bedrooms having an en-suite bathroom, TV and telephone. The hotel has a cosy bar and the continental buffet breakfasts and three course evening dinners are taken in the hotel's restaurant, which serves both Italian and international cuisine.
For a small supplement of £175 per person you can upgrade to a 4 star hotel such as the Hotel Zen in Marina di Pietrasanta, which have additional facilities for your comfort and enjoyment.
Please note that on certain peak dates or with high demand, we may use alternative hotels of the same 3 and 4 star category in our featured resorts of Lido di Camaiore, Marina de Pietrasanta or Forte dei Marmi on this delightful coast.
Not all 4 star hotels have a pool.
Excursions & Itinerary
On arrival at Pisa airport you will be met and transferred to our hotel on the Mediterranean Riviera, where we stay for seven nights with dinner and breakfast included every day.
During our stay we have arranged a programme of four fabulous full day excursions, all taken at a leisurely pace. There are also two days at leisure when you can relax in the comfortable surroundings of our hotel or explore our resort and nearby attractions.
The cradle of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is recognised as the art capital of the world. Built along the banks of the River Arno and surrounded by the Tuscan hills, it is here where you will find some of the finest sculptures, works of art and architecture including the magnificent Cathedral and Baptistry with its ‘Gates of Paradise’, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Ponte Vecchio. We have arranged a sightseeing tour of the city as soon as we arrive, conducted by a local guide, to enable you to get the most from your visit. The afternoon is then at leisure. Florence has an excellent shopping centre with a large range of Italian fashion, leather goods and shoes in the shops and boutiques.
Pisa is world famous for its instantly recognisable landmark, the Leaning Tower, which stands at a seemingly impossible angle in the Square of Miracles. No matter how many pictures you have seen of the tower, the reality will take you by suprise and will leave you wondering why it hasn’t toppled over! Next to the leaning tower is the Cathedral and the Baptistry, which are built out of the white Carrara marble. Lucca, birthplace of Puccini, is a perfectly preserved medieval town, hidden behind its splendid Renaissance ramparts. It is a small, graceful town which makes it ideal for exploring on foot and a walk along the ramparts will reward you with lovely views of the narrow streets, elegant Palaces and Romanesque churches. The town is also noted for its medieval squares, particularly the unusual oval shaped main Piazza, which was originally a Roman amphitheatre.
A highlight of any holiday to Italy's Mediterranean Riviera is a visit to the Cinque Terre - one of the best-kept secrets of the Riviera and one of the most unspoiled areas of the Mediterranean. The Cinque Terre is about as beautiful a coastline as you’re likely to find anywhere in Europe. In medieval times the name “terra” (land) meant village and today Cinque Terre refers to the five colourful fishing villages which are perched precariously above the sea along this stunning stretch of coast, with their hidden coves nestling at the foot of dramatic cliffs. Inaccessible by road, the villages are linked together both by rail and via a hillside footpath which winds through Mediterranean lemon groves, olive trees, orchards and terraced vineyards, with spectacular vistas every step of the way. If you prefer a more relaxing visit, we have included a ticket for the local train, which stops at each village. Whichever way you choose to visit the Cinque Terre, you will see some of Italy’s most inspiring scenery.
Portofino, once a tiny fishing village, now the Italian Riviera’s most exclusive resort, needs little introduction. Portofino’s harbour is filled with the yachts of the rich and famous and its pedestrianised streets are lined with stylish restaurants and chic designer boutiques. Not to be missed is a walk up to St. George’s church and on to the lighthouse, from which there are some fabulous views. Neighbouring Santa Margherita dates back to Roman times and is another old fishing village turned seaside resort. In the latter half of the 19th century Santa Margherita drew visitors from all over Europe, who stayed in the elegant hotels and villas which line the promenade.
Its "arrivederci" to Italy today, returning to Pisa airport to catch your flight back home after a fabulous week on Italy's Mediterranean Riviera.
