Reviews of our travelers

03 Apr 2023

I went on a trip to the Jewish Savanna. We went by speedboat, which saved a lot of time and was very pleasant. Furthermore, at one point it started to rain heavily, which was a shame, but fortunately this did not spoil the day because of the nice guides. We ended up having dinner at Over Bridge, where we were able to order ourselves at a nice restaurant where we wanted to eat, which was very tasty. All in all it was a very successful trip, partly thanks to the good service before and during the trip.

Super satisfied, hats off to the staff, the tour guide and the manager. The meals were fantastic, varied and beautifully presented. Coffee and soft drinks were also plentifully available. With a special treat on the occasion of my birthday. The tour guide, also a boatswain, was very talented, a good storyteller and very pleasant to listen to. I would recommend this resort to everyone.

Group Travel Insurance: A Comprehensive Guide

  • Group travel insurance is a single policy that covers groups of 10 or more.
  • Everyone in the group must have the same itinerary and travel to the same destination.
  • Shop early and compare quotes to get the best deal.

Whether preparing for a large family reunion in another state, booking a business trip with colleagues, or traveling with your college crew to a new country, you might consider group travel insurance. Group travel insurance provides financial protection for trips of 10 or more groups. But apart from the party size requirements, it functions the same as other travel insurance policies.

Here's what you need to know about group travel insurance — how to determine if you need it, different options, and tips to secure the best deal.

Group travel insurance is a single travel insurance policy that protects everyone on a trip. The policies are available for groups of 10 or more. Unlike other insurance policies that only cover one person or family travel insurance that only covers related travelers, group travel insurance can cover any group traveling together. You do not have to be related.

Group travel insurance policies usually offer comprehensive coverage, including standard protections against lost luggage, legal fees, medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and more.

Key Benefits of Group Travel Insurance

Cost-effectiveness.

Group travel insurance may be cheaper than buying separate policies for each individual traveler. Insurance companies may provide discounts for insuring multiple people, as this lowers administrative overhead per person. This is similar to how auto insurers offer rate reductions for consumers who insure multiple people under one policy.

It's worth noting that group travel insurance costs depend on the insurer and your trip details. Comparing quotes can help you find the best rates on the coverages you need.

You can find our guide on the best cheap travel insurance here.

Simplified management

Group travel insurance might make sense if everyone in your group has the same itinerary and travels to the same destination. The main perk of group travel insurance versus separate policies for each person is that it streamlines the purchasing process. You can buy one policy instead of multiple.

But to make it work, your group needs to be organized. This is especially true if group members intend to split the cost of the policy. It's crucial to communicate well with the people in your group and ensure everyone is on the same page.

Coverage Options

Common coverage features.

Most group travel insurance policies offer comprehensive coverage, which usually covers common travel issues like cancellations and medical emergencies.

Here's what comprehensive group travel insurance covers :

  • Trip cancellation insurance: If you need to cancel your trip, this coverage reimburses you for the cost of travel. Each policy includes a list of cancellation reasons that are covered.
  • Travel insurance for baggage: This covers the cost of stolen or missing luggage.
  • Emergency medical evacuation insurance : Covers the cost of transportation from one location to another due to an emergency medical situation.
  • Travel medical insurance: If you need medical care due to illness or injury while traveling, this part of the policy covers the cost.
  • Trip interruption travel insurance: If you have to cut your trip short due to an unforeseen emergency, this helps pay for travel plan changes.
  • Trip delay travel insurance: If there are delays to your flight or another aspect of your trip, this covers extra costs associated with the delay. It might include reimbursement for meals or hotel expenses.

Additional coverage options

You can customize your travel insurance policy with coverage options at an additional premium. These add-ons can be helpful to provide adequate coverage for your group's specific needs. Some examples include:

  • Adventure and sports coverage: For planned activities that involved increased risk (e.g., hiking, scuba diving, skiing, etc.)
  • Special events coverage: For cancellations, interruptions, or other losses that occur during planned events (e.g., weddings, corporate events, excursions, etc.)
  • Equipment coverage: For damage, loss, or theft of equipment or gear brought on the trip (e.g., sports equipment, tech, etc.)
  • Pre-existing condition waiver : For those with pre-existing conditions to receive travel medical coverage while traveling

Choosing the right group travel insurance

Assessing group needs.

Assessing your group's needs can help you choose the right group travel insurance. Some factors to consider include but aren't limited to the duration and destination of your trip, the type of travelers and their needs (including their ages and any pre-existing conditions), planned activities, and the group's budget.

Comparing insurance providers

Depending on the details of your trip, group travel insurance might be cheaper than purchasing individual policies for each traveler. But that is not always the case. As you shop for group travel insurance, there are steps you can take to ensure you get the best deal.

Get multiple quotes

It's smart to compare quotes from several providers. Multiple quotes allow you to compare coverage options and pricing. You can use a travel insurance comparison site like SquareMouth or TravelInsurance.com . Or you contact providers directly. Once you know the price range for protection, you can select the provider that seems like the best fit.

The best time to buy travel insurance is right after you make your first trip deposit. Your policy kicks in right away, which is helpful if an event occurs that forces you to cancel your trip. Additionally, an early purchase can be necessary to qualify for certain riders, such as pre-existing condition coverage and CFAR travel insurance .

Application and enrollment process

You should be prepared to provide the following information about your group when fielding quotes from travel insurance companies.

  • Trip dates
  • Travelers' names and date of birth
  • Destination
  • Initial trip deposit date
  • Cost of trip per traveler (prepaid and nonrefundable expenses)

Your insurance company may ask for additional information, such as pre-existing medical conditions and planned activities.

Policy management and claims

The coverage you select applies to everyone in the group. Each group member can make individual claims, which is helpful if only one or two people need to make a claim. But if everyone is involved, the entire group can file claims.

Special Considerations for Group Travel Insurance

Tailoring policies to group type.

It's important to tailor your insurance policy based on the type of group and the trip to ensure adequate protection. For example, if you're traveling with senior members, you want your policy's medical coverage to include pre-existing conditions. If your trip has physical or outdoor activities, adventure and sports coverage is additional protection worth considering.

A travel insurance agent can help you identify which coverages are necessary for your group's trip and find a policy that works for your group's budget.

Handling diverse member needs

Handling the diverse needs of group members within a single policy requires careful attention to policy details, including coverage specifics and deductibles. Start by thoroughly reviewing the policy to understand the included coverages and associated deductibles. If certain coverages are unnecessary for your group, ask your insurer whether they can be removed to reduce costs.

You may want to look for a policy with add-ons or customizable options. This allows you to tailor the coverage to meet the specific needs of different group members. Additionally, consider raising the deductible to lower the premium. However, ensure the deductible amount is affordable for all members in case a claim needs to be filed. This ensures your group has adequate protection while accommodating the diverse financial needs of the group.

Group travel insurance final recommendations and tips

Best practices for group leaders.

Before your trip, communicate insurance details like coverage inclusions, exclusions, deductibles, and how to file a claim with your group. It also helps to maintain policy documents in case an unexpected event arises.

You and your group should also establish a contingency plan and save your insurance's emergency hotline contact number for medical emergencies, natural disasters, or other travel disruptions.

Resources for further information

For further information on group travel insurance, check out:

  • Insurance companies' websites for information about coverage options, exclusions, and getting a quote.
  • Travel insurance comparison sites allow users to compare policies from multiple providers at once based on coverage, price, and other factors. Some examples of comparison websites include InsureMyTrip , Squaremouth, and VisitorsCoverage .
  • Travel agencies to help you book your trip and pick group travel insurance based on your itinerary.
  • Consumer review sites like Trustpilot and ConsumerAffairs to read first-hand testimonials by real users on their experience with a company.

Group travel insurance FAQs

Group travel insurance typically requires a minimum of 10 travelers to qualify for group travel insurance, but this varies by provider.

Yes, many group travel insurance policies offer options for various activities specific to the group's needs and travel itinerary, such as adventure and sports, special events, and equipment coverage.

Group travel insurance can be more cost-effective per person than individual policies, especially for larger groups. Compare quotes from various insurance providers to get the best deal on the coverages you need.

If one member  of a group travel insurance plan has an issue, that member can file a claim with the travel insurance company individually. That's why it's important for every member to be familiar with the claims process in case an issue arises.

A group leader should consider the group's specific needs, planned activities, destination-specific risks, and the group's budget when choosing a travel insurance policy.

Group managing the Headlands pushes back on Dana Point’s daily trail use hours

A n environmental group with a mission to preserve the endangered Pacific pocket mouse and manage lands on the Dana Point Headlands is appealing a recent decision by Dana Point’s Planning Commission to allow daily trail use on its land.

In May, the commission approved a development permit setting hours for the Bluff Top Trail, which runs across the large rock outcropping covered with coastal sage and other native plants. The land is home to the mice — in 2022, there were 77 — and the threatened California gnatcatcher.

The permit allows the public to enjoy the natural lands and scenic outlooks over the Pacific Ocean daily from dawn to dusk.

Now, officials with the Center for Natural Lands Management — who want the trail used fewer days with more limited hours — have appealed the city’s permit for access to the California Coastal Commission, citing their concerns over protecting the pocket mouse, which is found in only two other locations (Camp Pendleton and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park).

In their appeal, they contend that the city’s granting of the permit is inconsistent with local coastal programs for development and public access.

The Coastal Commission — with support from two commissioners — is expected to take up the issue in July to determine if there are substantive issues with what the city’s commission approved.

If they find there is, said Sarah Mueller, an attorney for CNLM, then the “Coastal Commission starts with a new permit that is consistent with the coastal programs for use and access per the Coastal Act.”

Disagreement over the trail use between Dana Point and CNLM has gone on for years. A court order in 2022 allowed for the daily use; the Planning Commission’s recent decision made it official.

“We believe this is such an important visitor-serving coastal amenity that daily access needs to be maintained as the baseline,” said Dana Point Mayor Jamey Federico. “We understand adaptive management and that the trail needs to be closed from time to time based on data. But, we believe CNLM needs to be taking every possible action to improve the pocket mouse population before they consider trail closures.”

CNLM, with a grant from the Steel Foundation, bought the land from developer Sanford Edward in 2005 for $11.9 million with the purpose of preserving the two endangered animals, among other species and plants. The money is invested and is expected to last in perpetuity, Mueller said.

The group also received $800,000 from the Department of Defense “to mitigate for what they’re doing at Camp Pendleton” to help the mice population.

As the Headlands Development and Conservation Plan requires, CNLM is responsible for the preservation and day-to-day management, and the public trail, for which the city has an easement, must also be accessible.

The trail, which opened in 2009, had the same public hours until early in the coronavirus pandemic when CNLM closed it. Once it reopened, access was limited until 2022.

Since then, the Coastal Commission has said a conditional use permit must be obtained to establish hours for public use on the trail, which is what the Planning Commission did in May.

But Mueller said the commission’s action overstepped its authority. She said the trail’s “amount of use” has doubled since it first opened and the “presence of people alone has an impact on the species and interferes with their reproduction and foraging.”

The group keeps track of the mice by gathering data that helps them understand how the population is doing, said Mueller. They also collect the number of people that come through the gates to the Headlands preserve and trail. By looking at this data, they’ve determined more use shows impacts to the mouse population, Mueller said.

Dana Point officials have criticized the group for not doing enough to support the mice’s habitat and for not being receptive to cross-breeding it with other species from the base.

Mueller said CNLM isn’t responsible for breeding but that it is done with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. The latter has bred some of the mouse population, with offspring freed at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park several years ago.

“I’m not sure the program at the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park has been that successful,” she said, adding that the center’s preferred public-use hours would be four days a week, including Saturday and Sunday. In the summer, the group’s suggested hours would be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and in the winter, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“That would allow for less traffic during the low-light hours when the mice are more active,” she said.

But Federico said the city isn’t interested in setting the “arbitrary hours” until the area is managed correctly and the mice born are “genetically viable.”

“This should all be required before a trail closure is considered,” he said.

“We hope the Coastal Commission will understand the importance of this low-cost, visitor-serving coastal amenity,” he added. “We hope an adaptive plan that defaults to the trail being open is something the commission appreciates.”

Expect the cost of your airfare to continue to rise, an aviation trade group warns

The cost of your next flight is likely to go up

AP logo

DUBAI -- The cost of your next flight is likely to go up.

That's the word from the International Air Transport Association, which held its annual meeting Monday in Dubai, home to the long-haul carrier Emirates.

While carriers recover from the groundings worldwide from the coronavirus pandemic, industry leaders told journalists that there are several costs likely to push those ticket prices ever higher.

Part of that comes from worldwide inflation, an ongoing problem since the pandemic started. Jet fuel costs, roughly a third of all airline expenses, remain high. Meanwhile, a global push for the aviation industry to decarbonize has more carriers fighting for the little amount of so-called sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, available in the market.

"The airlines will continue to do everything they can to keep costs in control as much as possible for the benefit of consumers," said Willie Walsh, the director-general of the the International Air Transport Association, an industry-trade group. "But I think it's unrealistic to expect that airlines can continue to absorb all of the costs. ... It's not something we like to do, but it's something we have to do."

Also pressuring the industry is a pandemic hangover in aircraft production as well, they say. Carriers now keep older planes that burn more fuel flying longer. There also aren't enough new aircraft to expand routes and increase supply to bring down overall prices.

That warning comes as the IATA estimates globally, airline revenue will reach nearly $1 trillion in 2024, a record high. There will be 4.96 billion travelers on airplanes this year, with total expenses for carriers reaching $936 billion - another record high.

But industry profits also are expected to be nearly $60 billion this year.

In particular, Emirates, a main driver for Dubai's economy, saw record profits of $4.7 billion in 2023 off revenues of $33 billion.

The Emirates' results track with those for its base, Dubai International Airport. The world's busiest airport for international travelers had 86.9 million passengers last year, surpassing numbers for 2019 just before the coronavirus pandemic grounded global aviation.

The airport now plans to move to the city-state's second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches in the next 10 years in a project worth nearly $35 billion.

Tim Clark, the airline's president, obliquely acknowledged that Monday by saying that he didn't want people to "get boxes of tissues out and play the violins" when warning that the industry's profit margins sit in the low single digits. However, he contended that as airlines have grown larger and carriers consolidated, cost savings have quietly been passed onto consumers now able to book flights across the world.

"It is quite amazing that ticket prices are where they are today," Clark said. "I think the value-for-money proposition that the consumers have had the benefit from for many decades is something that is one of those hidden bits of the narrative."

Yvonne Manzi Makolo, the CEO of RwandAir, also highlighted the taxes and fees imposed on carriers by the countries they operate in. She specifically cited those paid by carriers flying out of African nations as "already ridiculous."

Trump Media shares swing wildly and then tumble a day after former president was convicted

orange travel group

Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group closed lower Friday after swinging wildly over the course of the day following the conviction of former President Donald Trump in his hush money trial.

After the U.S. stock markets closed Thursday, a New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

After rising more than 2% at the opening of trading Friday, the shares ended the day down 5.3%.

The stock, which trades under the ticker symbol “DJT,” has been extraordinarily volatile since its debut in late March, joining the group of meme stocks that are prone to ricochet from highs to lows as small-pocketed investors attempt to catch an upward momentum swing at the right time.

The stock has tripled this year, in the process frequently making double-digit percentage moves either higher or lower on a single day. It peaked at nearly $80 in intraday trading on March 26. For context, the S&P 500 is up almost 10% year to date.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission before going public, Trump Media warned investors of the potential pitfalls faced by the former president and the adverse affect it might have on the stock.

“President Donald J. Trump is the subject of numerous legal proceedings, the scope and scale of which are unprecedented for a former President of the United States and current candidate for that office. An adverse outcome in one or more of the ongoing legal proceedings in which President Donald J. Trump is involved could negatively impact TMTG and its Truth Social platform.”

Earlier this month, Trump Media reported that it lost more than $300 million last quarter , according to its first earnings report as a publicly traded company .

For the three-month period that ended March 31, the company posted a loss of $327.6 million, which it said included $311 million in non-cash expenses related to its merger with a company called Digital World Acquisition Corp. DWAC was an example of what’s known as a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, which can give young companies quicker and easier routes to getting their shares trading publicly, but with much less scrutiny.

Trump Media & Technology fired an auditor this month that federal regulators recently charged with “massive fraud.” The media company dismissed BF Borgers as its independent public accounting firm on May 3, delaying the filing of its quarterly earnings report.

Trump Media had previously cycled through at least two other auditors — one that resigned in July 2023, and another that was terminated by its board in March, just as it was rehiring BF Borgers.

Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records at his company in connection with an alleged scheme to hide potentially embarrassing stories about him during his 2016 Republican presidential election campaign.

The charge, a felony, arose from reimbursements paid to then-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen after he made a $130,000 hush money payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to silence her claims of an extramarital sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump was accused of misrepresenting Cohen’s reimbursements as legal expenses to hide that they were tied to a hush money payment.

Trump’s defense contended that the Cohen payments were for legitimate legal services.
