Racing Through Time: A 2024 Mille Miglia Adventure in an Alfa Romeo Spider

Day 1: driving chiantishire.

We eagerly await your arrival at Florence Airport, ready to guide you to your hotel where a shared lunch marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey. After, you'll be intimately introduced to the soul of Nostalgic's classic Alfa Romeo Spider and the magic of navigating with a roadbook. Imagine yourself winding through the scenic vistas of Chianti, Italy's storied wine heartland, with the top down and the breeze in your hair. The day's highlight? An evocative visit to a historic monastery, a sanctuary of winemaking since the medieval era, where you'll taste the legacy of centuries. As dusk falls, the evening unfolds at your leisure, offering a canvas for your own explorations or serene relaxation.

Day 2: Mille Miglia comes to town

With Nostalgic, you are once again 'up, close and personal' when the Mille Miglia cohorts drive across Tuscany. More than 400 vintage cars from the earliest days of automotive construction are able to take part . Only selected cars built before 1957 are allowed, the year when the original Mille Miglia had been halted following a terrible accident. As with the original Mille Miglia, the participants drive on country roads that have not been cordoned off, and pass through medieval villages and little towns. You'll be very welcome at the wheel of our Alfa Romeo Spiders when driving in the main body of the event. No other vehicle manufacturer in the world was able to win the Mille Miglia as often as Alfa Romeo. After a great driving day we will enjoy a group dinner.

Day 3: Pienza and the Crete Senesi

This impressive stage leads, partly on the ancient Roman Via Cassia, southwest to Siena, past Val d'Orcia. Most of today’s itinerary is identical to the legendary Italian automobile race 'Mille Miglia'. At Lunch you will have the choice of local restaurants in the old Papal town of Pienza. The highlight of the afternoon is the Crete Senesi: steep loamy slopes which resemble the moon and a onesome road running along the ridge. Dinner will be served in nearby village of Volpaia.

Day 4: San Gimignano

The last day will still be spent driving west in the direction of San Gimignano. The winding, old Siena-Firenze country road leads you from Castellina on to Poggibonsi, and from there along side roads with little traffic to San Gimignano. The small town lies in the upper Elsa Valley and is rich in art and culture. San Gimignano is world-famous for the large number of its preserved family towers, which are mere stumps in other towns, and for its almost unchanged medieval appearance. Slender, towering spires dominate the townscape, a fact that has earned the town the nickname "Manhattan of the Middle Ages". In 1990 the historic old town a UNESCO World Heritage Site appointed. Following the guided tour of the city, we recommend a few old town pubs for an individual lunch break before you set off on the last leg towards the Citadel of Monteriggioni set off. There, nearby, you will say goodbye to "your" Alfa Romeos and we will accompany you back to Florence airport or to the hotel if you are arriving by car.

Want to find out even more about this special trip? You will get a great insight into the Mille Miglia adventure from our tour guide Ludwig. In his Travelogue to the Mille Miglia  he shares his impressions and emotions: This is how Ludwig experienced the classic car trip to the Mille Miglia.

You can find more destinations & dates at a glance in our  free travel catalogue

The Mille Miglia  experience it up close and personal in the most beautiful section of the “Corsa più bella del Mondo” race in the  Tuscany. This is one of the most attractive regions in Italy. It impresses with its unique, multi-faceted landscape. Vineyards mix with olive groves and alternate with the original open space of the landscape. This barreness is interrupted by avenues of cypress trees, which rise slim into the sky. Little-traveled roads meander in many curves up the gentle hills and lead you through small sleepy villages. A setting like from an Italian film from the fifties.

It has also attracted culture lovers with cities like Siena and San Gimignano , as well as sights such as the Monteriggioni Fortress has a lot to offer. Already in the weeks before the world-famous horse race, the “Palio” in Siena , you may see the teams rehearsing and preparing for the big race. They parade through the city in their historical costumes and practise on their drums for the perfect entry into Piazza Il Campo.

With its impressive medieval skyline San Gimignano ranks high on Tuscany's must-see list. The picturesque town, located at 324m above sea level, is characterized by the economic boom in the Middle Ages, which made the remarkable architecture and art development possible. It is therefore no coincidence that the historic city center is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vineyards bordering the city walls round off the perfect Tuscan flair and give an idea of the flourishing viticulture.

Mille Miglia im Alfa Spider - auch beim 2. Mal genial!

You got a beatuful car"...

Next stop: Targa Florio 2024

About vintage car rental in Italy

Taking the necessary length of time ... you decide..

Rediscover the authentic sensations of vintage driving in Italy : hear the roar of the engine, feel each vibration through the steering wheel and pedals through your entire body, knowing that no two curves are the same. Rent a Vintage Car and discover the tastes of the landscape you are driving through, with the wind in your hair. Getting lost, going down the wrong road, is not so bad; sometimes only destiny can show us things we had not planned to see.

Slow Drive, embrace the slow driving.

"Slow Drive" signifies the numerous actions one needs to put together in harmony in order to take as much out of the experience as there is on offer, a great deal. Actions which involve our feelings, sensations and emotions. The Vintage Driver captures the pleasure of each instant behind the wheel; never choosing the fast busy route, instead he goes for the longer, less busy route, more curves and more emotions. At the same time the Vintage Driver leaves behind all time measuring instruments, the chaos of the city. Appreciating each moment of his driving experience and dealing with any unexpected events with a smile. A Vintage Driver lives the encounter with his vintage car as an opportunity to appreciate all that surrounds him on his journey, a scenic view, a monument, a sunset… not satisfied with the things everyone can see from a main road but venturing onto the secondary route to see hidden gems.

sell 15 Day Italy North Classic Thursday Departure 2024

15 Days / 13 Nights   Starting at $5875 PP (Land Rate)

Perillo's Italy North Classic is the largest selling Italy tour in history. Developed in 1975 by Mario Perillo and Lucio Massari, it remains our most popular itinerary today. This departure will be staying in superior/deluxe  hotels.

Boarding your overnight flight, you’re off on the adventure of a lifetime.

Benvenuti a Roma ! Your Perillo representative will be at the airport to greet you. We are pleased to offer complimentary transfers from the Rome airport to your hotel at scheduled times.

You’ll have some time to settle into your hotel with the remainder of the day at leisure to discover this magical city.

Tonight, we’ll meet our tour leader for a brief orientation and welcome drink. After orientation, you’ll be free for the remainder of the evening. Be sure to ask your tour leader for restaurant recommendations – so many wonderful places to eat in this amazing city!

This morning, it’s a five-minute drive to another country—Vatican City! With our expert local guide we’ll tour the Vatican Museums, a massive collection of ancient Greek sculptures, medieval tapestries and Renaissance paintings.

Our visit culminates in the Sistine Chapel, the room where the Pope is elected.

Next we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in Christendom. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pietà, sculpted when he was just 24, as well as Bernini’s seven-story bronze canopy located above the main altar.

(Please note that the visit of St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to availability based on the events planned by the Pope.)

You’ll have lunch on your own followed by a free afternoon in Rome.

Tonight we thought you’d enjoy a dinner on your own. Ask your tour guide for a recommendation!

Hail Caesar! All aboard our chariot for a relaxing, panoramic driving tour of Imperial Rome including the Roman Forum, downtown ancient Rome, the Circus Maximus, and the Great Synagogue, built in the heart of the Jewish quarter.

Then we’ll enter the Colosseum, reliving the brutal entertainment of the gladiators and the lions, refereed by the Emperor himself.

Tonight, we’ll recount our explorations with good food, fine wine and new friends at a local restaurant.

*Colosseum entrance subject to ticket availability*

This morning we head to Pompeii, approaching the view of the Bay of Naples on the way.

Imagine... a city perfectly preserved as it was on that fateful day 2,000-years-ago, when ash and lava literally stopped it in its tracks. You’ll see the tragic fossils of people attempting to escape along with children and dogs.

Tonight we enjoy dinner in our hotel with fine wines from Campania region.

This morning you’ll be taken to Capri, the world’s most enchanting island. Upon arrival, we take a private boat for a tour of the island (weather permitting). We cruise around the magnificent Faraglioni, Capri’s most iconic sight. These mythical towering rock formations, which juts out from the Mediterranean just off the island’s coast, were formed over the years by erosion from ocean waves.

Next, we visit one of the lesser-known but equally beautiful sea caves, the Grotta Bianca. Once we arrive back on Capri, we have free time to explore the island on our own or take advantage of a special optional excursion with your tour leader.

Later this afternoon, we sail back and have some time to relax before heading out to a great Neapolitan restaurant for dinner.

Naples is the most authentic Italian city and certainly a world of its own. To enjoy and better understand this wonderful, yet complex, city you will be accompanied by a local guide, born and raised in Napoli.

Your guide will lead you to the main places of interest such as Piazza del Gesù and the famous Spaccanapoli street, full of excellent pizza places and pastry shops, but will also introduce you to this multicultural and lively city through the eyes of a true Neapolitan.

This afternoon, we will visit Sorrento, known for its beautiful coastline, good weather, and stunning views of Mount Vesuvius. You’ll have some free time to sightsee or shop before returning to Naples.

The remainder of the evening is yours to enjoy as you please. Be sure to ask your tour leader for restaurant recommendations.

Departing Sorrento, our deluxe motorcoach navigates the rolling hills, scenic vineyards and postcard perfect vistas of Umbria and Tuscany. Along the way, we’ll travel by the beautiful Tiber River Valley and the medieval villages of Orvieto and Orte.

This evening’s dinner features fine local wines at our hotel.

Florence—the fountainhead of the Renaissance, awaits us! Our day of sightseeing includes the majestic Duomo Complex built in 1296, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its renowned Gates of Paradise doors.

We follow the medieval streets to the most striking square in Florence, Piazza della Signoria.

“Breathtaking” is the only word to describe one’s first view of Michelangelo’s David. Yes, it’s quite large and detailed. But the real magic is in how Michelangelo transformed a lifeless rock into a man—full of pride, wary of his adversary, yet quietly confident. All with just a hammer and chisel!

Tonight, we’ll take you to our favorite local restaurant for a typical Tuscan dinner.

The bell tower of Pisa is among the most instantly recognizable structures on earth. Architects say it would be world famous even if it were perfectly straight. This morning we’ll see for ourselves, along with the beautiful Cathedral and Baptistery.

This afternoon we’ll visit a typical Tuscan winery to learn about the grape, the nose, food pairings and, most importantly—which glass to use! We’ll enjoy a wine tasting with these special wines along with an early light dinner. Cin-Cin !

Visitors to Padua are often surprised by a sense of deep spirituality. St. Anthony ( patron Saint of lost objects ) is interred here in the serene Basilica, which dates back to the 1200s. We’ll have some time to visit the Basilica and then some free time to explore ourselves and get some lunch.

Venice arrives to us as in a dream. Gondolas glide past us with their gondoliers singing. Our arrival is by bus and then switching into water taxis to reach our hotel. We’ll have some time to settle into our hotel and relax or go for a walk in this magical city.

Tonight we’ll recount our explorations over dinner in our hotel. Good food, good wine, and great friends! Now that’s Italian!

This morning we’ll meet our expert local guide for a walking tour of St. Mark’s Square, the great Byzantine Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs and an inside visit of the Doge’s Palace. Next, we’ll board our mostoscafi to the beautiful island of Murano, where we will visit one of the oldest glass-blowing factories. Our glass masters will show us two different glass blowing techniques: the handblown glass technique creating a small vase and the carved glass technique, creating a small sculpture like a glass horse, fish or cat.

This afternoon you’ll have a chance to get lost in the city’s labyrinth of canals, bridges and tiny piazzas. Being a small island, it’s impossible to stray very far. But it won’t hurt to master the phrase Dov’è Piazza San Marco ?

Dinner is on your own tonight. When in Venice, do as the Venetians do! Enjoy Cicchetti, Venetian style tapas, served in various pubs all over Venice.

On the way to Milan, we stop at one of the most popular sights on Lake Garda – the peninsula of Sirmione. Crossing the drawbridge, we enter a peaceful world of hot springs, the Medieval castles and phenomenal views of the Dolomites.

Soon we’re in fashionable Milan where we begin with a panoramic drive around the city. Next, we visit the Piazza del Duomo (“Cathedral Square”), the main piazza of Milan named after, and dominated by the impressive Milan Cathedral.

We’ll stroll through the spectacular glass-topped Galleria, the world’s first shopping mall and on to the famed La Scala Opera House.

Tonight, we enjoy a Milanese dinner at our hotel.

This morning’s visit to Lugano is actually in Switzerland, but this Alpine paradise clings to its Italian roots. The natural beauty is accompanied by great shops filled with Swiss specialties— like clocks, watches and, of course, chocolate!

Next we visit Como, the charming town and pristine lake, lined with lovely villas.

Our last night together will be at a fine Milanese restaurant.

No tears! You’ll exchange email addresses with your new friends and make plans for the future. How about we all meet again on another Perillo tour—to Hawaii or Spain!

This morning you board your flight home, arriving in the USA the same day. Unless, of course, you have decided to extend your stay and let this unforgettable journey continue a little longer! While we say arrivederci to Italy, we realize we’re taking a little piece of it back home with us.

Thanks for traveling with the Perillo family, and please return soon.

format_quote Testimonials

We have recommend Perillo Tours to all of our friends and family and anyone we hear about who is thinking of going to Italy. We certainly intend on going back.

I could not have picked a better trip for my first international tour than the 14-day North Classic Italy tour with Perillo! I am a retired teacher, limited in funds, so it was important for me to get it right the first time. And with Perillo, I did! A trip of a lifetime! Despite the inherent crowds and time constraints, Perillo made sure we did not have long waits anywhere at all. Our time was optimized, and we were able to see so many amazing sights and places. My favorite? Pompeii! Experience the Roman life without “dressing it up”. Least favorite? Capri. It was too heavy in shopping and too light in history. The meals were amazing, and you’ll have to pace yourself as you will have 4-course meals every night. The hotels were excellent! I felt positively pampered. The bus was modern and very comfortable and clean. The local guides were some of the best- extremely knowledgeable and efficient. Our tour director, Nadia, worked constantly to smooth our way every day. As a retired teacher who had to plan field trips, I know how challenging all that coordination can be. She was a seasoned professional! And I cannot say enough about the entire group- friendly, cooperative, and kind. I returned feeling that I was able to get a full Italian historical immersion to relive in my memory every day. I highly recommend Perillo!

What is the best time to travel to italy.

The best time of year to go to Italy depends on what you prefer from your vacation:

  • Visit in the summer (between July and September) for the warmest weather.
  • Visit in spring (April – June), or fall (late September – October) for milder weather and less crowds.
  • Visit in winter (November – February) for Christmas markets and quiet cities.

How many days do I need to see Italy?

It can take a lifetime to explore all of Italy, but we recommend a minimum of 7 days to see the best of one of Italy’s regions. To visit multiple regions all over Italy, consider a 2 or 3 week tour. Our itineraries can be booked back-to-back, or we can create a private tour around the amount of time you have, and the places you wish to see.

What should I pack for Italy?

  • We suggest clothes that can be worn in layers
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A cardigan or light jacket for the evenings
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • These are just a few helpful suggestions, but we are happy to provide a full recommended packing list in your booking confirmation.

I want to experience an authentic Italian tradition, can I plan my trip around this?

Absolutely, we love the different Italian traditions (read our blog on them here) and can arrange a trip to suit the location and dates of whichever tradition in Italy you want to experience!

Reisetag 5, Freitag, 29.09.2023 | 197km – 7.679hm

Unser Dolomiten-Day!

Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

Ferragamo museum & wine tasting, private classical recital in umbria, private classical music recital in a frescoed music room.

Between the late 16th century and the 1960s, a grand estate in the small Umbrian town of San Martino in Campo near Perugia was inhabited by members of the noble Donini family. What began as two 17th-century villas of the summer residence of the Donini counts became at the turn of the 21st century the hotel Alla Posta dei Donini, boasting many authentically restored features from centuries past. One of these is a sitting room that was primarily used for concerts, decorated with frescoed walls and ceilings painted by artists from the school of noted 18th-century painter Francesco Appiani. Fittingly, it's in this magnificent setting that you'll enjoy a private classical music recital for Tauck guests only!

Tauck Exclusive – Vatican Museums after hours

Explore the treasures of the vatican museums and the sistine chapel... without the crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

This was a trip of a lifetime and I chose it because I felt the itinerary allowed me to experience the best Italy had to offer. All my expectations were met and exceeded!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Classic Italy covers 1,270 mi (2,043 km) and, though paced to accommodate all our guests, is nonetheless an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Generally, spring and fall average high temperatures range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C) and summer high temperatures range from 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year in Venice, but more seasonally in Rome and Sorrento, where summers are dryer than winters. Venice experiences very high humidity, with hot weather in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which, particularly in spring and autumn, tend to cause flooding, known as the 'acqua alta'.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The climate of northern Italy ranges from Alpine near Switzerland to continental along the Po River to Venice. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer. You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to northern Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling
