Scenic driving on Oahu

This is an abbreviated version of things to do in Oahu  for your Oahu tour.

If you won’t be renting a car, here’s one of the best circle island tours on Oahu .

All the planning is done for you, and you will learn a lot!

Island driving = slow driving

Keep in mind that driving around the island takes time.

The time can be due to traffic, and it can also just generally be due to maximum speed on the island.

The highest speed limit you’ll find anywhere on Oahu is 55mph, and often you will be going below that.

So take it slow and take it all in!

And the earlier in the day you start, the more you can experience!

Your GPS device can also be cause for delay.

You can use the GPS on your phone as a guide, but it’s not definitive. Sometimes it might get confused and send you in the wrong direction.

But don’t get stressed!

You’re in Hawaii!

It’s all in the experience!

Just another reason to make sure you aren’t on a specific time table when you’re planning for an island road trip!

Now here first is a quick list.

TOUR PHOTOS

Waimea Bay Oahu

I broke my ankle while on vacation and rented a mobility scooter the rest of the trip. This company is ADA compliant on their Grand Circle Island Tour of Oahu. The driver was great! He told us about the history of where we were going and kept us entertained the entire trip. He also never acted annoyed that he had to use the bus lift to lift me down at each stop which was nice. I do not believe the normal tour is on a huge bus unless you need the ADA complaint. I've been to Oahu 4 times in the past and never really did a Circle Island Tour. This was one of my favorite days I had (despite it raining the entire trip). I enjoyed all the stops!

Recently did two different tours with this company during my vacation with my husband in Oahu. The Grand Circle Island Tour with Cousin Koko was the best. Not only was he professional and fun-spirited, he was patient and very informative. Learned so much about the different places we visited on the tour. Treated everyone on the motorcoach like ohana! The Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial Tour with Cousin Wes was great as well. Our tour through downtown Honolulu was great; definitely appreciated the history lesson! It’s imperative that while on vacation, one should learn about the history and culture about the place you’re visiting! Thank you Roberts Hawaii for making our tours memorable!

The guide we had was excellent. He had a keen knowledge and deep understanding of the history and culture of Oahu and all the places we visited. And he brought us to a great local spot for lunch.

Circle Island Oahu Tour

Oahu Circle Island Tour Itinerary

Popular Route 🌴

This route is the backbone for most Oahu island tours, whether they cater to mixed groups or offer private experiences.

Although specific stops, times, and directions may vary among tour operators, about 90% follow this primary route.

You might notice that the yellow line on the map cuts through the middle of the island, instead of completing a full circle. This is because the roads don't connect at the northwestern tip of Oahu.

Completing the loop would require a beautiful four-hour walk through an albatross sanctuary.

Generally, 8-12 stops are ideal for a day tour, allowing you to see the sights without feeling rushed.

oahu circle island tour map

O’ahu: The ultimate circle island tour in one day

Just FYI, this itinerary is for sight-seeing only. Since we are jam-packing all the “sights” in one day, there will not be any planned excursions for this day trip.

Now that you’ve booked your trip, I’m sure you’re looking to get ideas to pack as many activities in the short time you have available. For those of you who don’t have a whole lot of time on the island, or maybe you’re renting a car for 1-2 days, this itinerary is for you. I will outline the best way to enjoy what O’ahu has to offer in a one-day circle island drive. Make sure you’re well rested, because you will be exhausted by the end of the day.

Most of you will be staying in Waikiki, or somewhere in Honolulu. If you aren’t, make sure to use some sort of map app to gauge how long the drive is from your accommodation to the starting point. It also goes without saying that this itinerary is specific for those of you renting a car.

This day drive is one I’ve done many many times. It is my husband’s favorite, and everyone I bring along with me. For those of you who are planning their very first trip to Hawaii-this is a MUST-DO so that you can see much of O’ahu’s natural beauty. Another note, if you are not on track with the timeline-you may need to skip the Pali lookout towards the end of the drive…so keep each stop to a minimum, bring snacks with you, and keep it moving.

Before you embark on this drive, make sure you have the following:

  • Full tank of gas
  • Carry some cash-$40/per person (for tips, side-of-the-road shopping, food trucks, etc.)
  • Have a couple of extra towels
  • Pack a small bag of extra clothes (just in case)
  • Bring a hat
  • Portable battery pack
  • Slippers (flip-flops)
  • Reusable bag

*Tip: I suggest you start by wearing comfortable shoes, comfortable shorts and tank over your bathing suit-ladies, and for the guys I suggest you wear comfy shoes, board shorts or basketball shorts-whatever is comfortable with a t-shirt. Do not get dressed up, you’re gonna be outdoors or in a car all day-so be realistic. Also, if you need packing advice-read my Essential Hawaii packing list .

And so the adventure begins…

The idea is to get to the starting point by 0700, so leave in a timely manner to get there on time to start.

Use my time stamps as a guideline-of course your times will vary depending on traffic, time spent at each location, and the parking situation.

Things to note: I used Waikiki as a starting point since it is centrally located, and near the starting point. If this doesn’t apply to you, that’s okay because the route will still remain the same.

This drive is mostly scenic-meaning there will be many beautiful sights along the way. Below each description I will include sights to see along your way to the next stop. If some of those additional sights interest you, please make some time to visit them! Lastly, some parts of the drive will not have pull-off areas, so please be careful.

0700 – Our tour begins at Diamond Head lookout, or Black point

The starting point is located @ 3483 Diamond Head Rd, Honolulu, HI 96816 .

This stop will be a perfect starting location to stare out unto the horizon just after sunrise. Be sure to pull over where there are designated pull off, parking spots. Take some photos, cheer on the bikers that frequent this scenic road, and get ready to hit the road.

Continue along Kahala Ave, then take a left on Kealaolu Ave. You will be taking the H1 Eastbound towards Hawaii Kai, keep in mind that the H1 turns into Kalaniana’ole Hwy.

0730 – Maunalua Bay Beach Park

Located @ the intersection of Kalaniana’ole Hwy and Hawaii Kai Dr. this small beach park has a large parking lot. Maunalua bay will give you views of the bay, Portlock and the coast down to Kahala. Depending on the time of year, you can catch views of local canoe paddlers out on the water.

  • Hawai’i Kai Lookout This lookout point will give you views of Koko Head, Koko Marina, and views all the way to Diamond Head.
  • Lanai Lookout I would only stop here if there is parking in the parking lot. If there isn’t, no worries-the next stop will not disappoint, and the views are similar if not better.

0800 – Halona Blowhole Lookout

This is one of the most photographed stops along this drive. This is a popular film location (Pirates of the Caribbean & 50 First Dates).

Note: There are no restrooms; be careful when turning into the parking lot driveway, because the roads on this part of the island are windy and often have blind spots. Many tour buses also stop here, as well as other visitors.

0830 – Sandy Beach Park

You can either drive through the parking lot, as it exits on the far side of the park, or you can park and take in the sights. Whichever you choose, this iconic beach is frequented by surfers and boogie-boarders alike. The grassy area of the park often attracts locals with elaborate kites. If you’re lucky perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of both. You may also see a Hawaiian monk seal laying out on the sand…feel free to take photos from afar, if you get too close or even touch one of these endangered animals, be prepared for a hefty fine! The people of Hawaii do all they can to protect all native plants and animals, so please show some respect.

Please be careful if you decide to dip your toes in the water, the shore break here can be harsh. Many visitors who aren’t accustomed to the strength of the break here find themselves in the Emergency Room. Take extreme caution-especially when there are warning signs posted along the beach.

Note: There are restrooms and showers; free parking; lifeguards on staff

0850 – Makapu’u Lookout

This is by far my favorite lookout on O’ahu. Okay, perhaps I’m biased because Waimanalo is my home town and where this picturesque lookout is located. When you visit this spot and see it for yourself, please let me know what you think of this sight. On a clear day you can see Makapu’u bay, Makai pier, Waimanalo Bay, Rabbit island and Flat island, Kailua, Kane’ohe and further up the coast. The beautiful mountain backdrop on this end of O’ahu is Ko’olaupoko.

Note: No restrooms; free parking

  • Waimanalo Lighthouse Hike If you have the time during your trip, I suggest doing this hike. The starting point is just below the Makapu’u Lookout. It is an easy hike and paved all the way to the top. It is approximately 2.3 miles roundtrip, with a gradual incline of about 520 feet.
  • Makapu’u Beach Park Pull into this beach park and take a quick dip in the water if you like. This beach can sometimes have rough shore break depending on weather conditions. Again, keep an eye out for warning signs that are posted along the shore. (Note: There are restrooms and showers; free parking; lifeguards on staff)
  • Makai Pier Sometimes the gate is open, and if it is you can walk out onto the pier and look down into the water and see fish, or other sea life. If you want, you can also hike down the small hill beneath the pier for a cool photo.
  • Sherwood Beach Park This is where most locals come for family gatherings, beach days, or for camping. (Note: There are restrooms and showers; free parking)

0945 – Kailua Beach Park

Kailua beach park is frequently by many locals who live on this side of the island. You can see flat island right off the coast, and many people kayaking when the water is calm. This beach is great for kids and adults alike. This is also a great spot for get togethers or picnics. In summer months you can expect to find canoe paddlers, as Kailua is location to a number of canoe clubs, and a Regatta location.

Note: There are restrooms and showers; free parking; No lifeguards

  • Kailua Town I’m sure you’re hungry now, so I suggest you grab a light lunch, and some snacks while here in Kailua. Kailua is one of the best small towns to visit for food, boutiques, and beaches. You’ll be able to find souvenirs here and great food.
  • The Byodo-In Temple This temple is located at Valley of the Temples just outside of Kane’ohe. There is a small gravel parking lot that requires a small fee (a few years ago it was $5/adult, $4/seniors, $2/child cash-only).
  • He’eia Fishpond Keep an eye out for this traditional Hawaiian fishpond off the coastal roadway. This ancient Hawaiian fishpond is being tended to by a group of locals who work to preserve and care for this precious resource and treasure.

1145 – Kualoa Regional Park

This is one of my favorite parks to bring lunch and enjoy the views. Many local divers, spear fishermen, canoe paddlers, free divers come here often. When the water is at low tide, the current is mild and if you’re daring, you can make the swim to the small island. My brothers and I have made this swim, but only attempt it if you are a strong swimmer, and you are mindful of the tides and current. Otherwise, enjoy the view from Kualoa. If you have the extra time and money, I suggest arranging activities and excursions at Kualoa Ranch (a fun tour is the Movie tour).

Note: There are restrooms; showers; picnic tables; free parking

  • Hukilau Beach This is a popular beach for the La’ie locals. It is a nice swimmable beach, though windy most of the time.
  • Mormon Temple If you’re interested in architecture, religion, or just curious, drive by the La’ie Mormon temple. It is a magnificent view.

1230 – Banzai Pipeline

Banzai’s or Pipeline, either name works. If you happen to be visiting during the winter months (particularly December or January) you’ll be in awe by the waves that make this spot world-famous. Numerous surf competitions are held here annually. The most notable Banzai Pipeline surf competition is the Billabong Pipe Masters Competition.

  • Shark’s Cove A snorkeler and scuba divers’ paradise. This cove is known for its underwater rock formations and teeming with sea life. If you have the time to dive in, make sure you have your snorkel. Also, you will want to keep in mind that it is very rocky, so wear the appropriate footwear.

1300 – Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay is another popular beach destination, either to jump off the rock or to view The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational or simply known as “The Eddie.” Either way, this is a beautiful picturesque bay for anyone and any time of year.

Note: There is a small parking lot and often gets full quickly. There are also restrooms and showers. There isn’t much shade, so be sure to wear sunscreen and appropriate clothing.

  • Note: There isn’t much roadside parking, so be wary about where you park. It is prohibited by Federal law to touch, provoke, or get too close to these animals-be careful and be mindful of your distance. There aren’t any public restrooms or water here. The closest Lifeguard station is about 100 yards down the beach at Chun’s Reef Beach.

1400 – Hale’iwa Town

Hale’iwa is O’ahu’s quintessential surf town. When you drive through this cute town, you’ll notice surf boards everywhere, surf shops, and signs for surf lessons. Hale’iwa also has many local boutiques that sell home goods (perfect for authentic gifts and souvenirs), and many bikini and swimsuit shops. I’m sure you’ll find something to buy here in this quaint town. Before you head out, make a stop at Matsumoto’s Shave Ice for Hawaii’s iconic dessert.

1445 – Dole Plantation

Although Dole Plantation will probably be closed by the time you reach it, it’s still a significant place to stop. The colorful Dole sign cannot be missed, and even from the parking lot you can see fields of pineapples. Now, if you want to visit and do the Dole Plantation Tour, check out their site for more information.

The next hour or so will consist of straight driving, so hopefully you have someone with you so they can be the designated photographer. There aren’t any safe areas to pull over for photos.

You will continue your drive by taking the H2 southbound to Pearl City, then onto H1 eastbound, then you will take the H3 eastbound. Now, once you are on the H3 this is the ultimate scenic drive . You will take in the views of the Ko’olau mountains and if you catch the drive right after some rain, as soon as you emerge from the tunnel-you will see countless waterfalls. It is absolutely breathtaking. On the other hand, even if it doesn’t rain it is still stunning.

You will make what seems like a U-turn, by getting onto the Pali Hwy next.

1545 – Pali Lookout

When you are on the Pali Hwy, keep an eye out for the signs for the Pali Lookout. The Pali lookout hours are from 0900-1600. If you’re behind on the timeline, you may need to skip the lookout. This place plays an important part in O’ahu’s history. This is where the famed Battle of Nu’uanu happened, and Kamehameha the Great conquered O’ahu.

  • ‘Iolani Palace (Left) By the time you head back through downtown, the palace will be closed. But, keep an eye out for it as you’re driving by. This is where Hawaiian royalty reigned, up until the overthrow of Queen Lili’uokalani. If you have time to visit this historic and culturally enriching place, please do so! There is so much to see and learn here.
  • Kamehameha Statue (Right) Directly across the street, you’ll be able to view the Kamehameha statue of our great Hawaiian King.

1715 – Ala Moana Shopping Center

You survived the circle island drive of O’ahu! I’ve ended the tour here at Ala Moana Shopping Center because there are a number of restaurants and shops for you to visit. If it isn’t too dark, you can drive through the Ala Moana park right across the street along the coast.

I hope you enjoye d this one-day circle island tour drive. For those of you who were behind the time guideline, that’s okay. Depending on where you decided to end your journey, you can pick up where you left off the next day. Perhaps, you’ll be able to do the Dole Plantation Tour, ‘Iolani Palace Tour, and something else. Remember, this is just a suggestion so alter the list to better suit you and your family. Enjoy!

Weather and best time to visit Oahu

Oahu, known as “The Gathering Place” in Hawaii, has a pleasant tropical climate that makes it a year-round destination. However, the best time to visit Oahu largely depends on your preferences and what you want to do on the island.

  • Dry Season (April to October): This period is the most popular for tourists. Oahu experiences less rainfall, and the weather is warm and sunny. It’s an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking, surfing, and snorkeling. The summer months (June to August) tend to be the busiest with more visitors.
  • Wet Season (November to March): Oahu’s wet season sees more rain, but it’s still a viable time to visit. Rainfall is usually brief and scattered, and the island becomes lush and green. This can be a great time for budget-conscious travelers as accommodations may be more affordable. The surf is also better during these months, attracting surf enthusiasts.
  • Shoulder Seasons (April, May, September, and October): These months offer a balance between good weather and fewer crowds. The shoulder seasons provide comfortable temperatures and slightly lower visitor numbers, making it an excellent time to visit if you want to avoid peak crowds.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Oahu depends on your preferences. If you prefer dry, sunny weather and don’t mind the crowds, the dry season is ideal. However, if you want to save money and explore a quieter side of the island, consider the shoulder seasons or even the wet season. No matter when you visit, Oahu has something to offer for everyone, from stunning beaches to vibrant cultural experiences.

Preview the Tour

Your tour around this island begins in Honolulu, near Pearl Harbor. You’ll hear about the “day that will live in infamy” as well as the unexpected history of Honolulu.

Next is Aloha Tower, one of the city’s most iconic attractions. Continuing, you’ll see Iolani Palace, the luxurious former home of Hawaii’s monarchs, as well as a statue of King Kamehameha the Great.

The first beach on the Oahu tour is Ala Moana Beach, a pristine stretch of sand that was once used to dump garbage! But don’t worry, it’s almost impossibly clean these days. Waikiki Beach follows it. This is where surfing superstar Duke Kanahamoku started before he transformed the world of surfing forever.

Leaving the beaches behind for a moment, you’ll see Diamond Head State Park, an enormous volcanic crater, and Hawaii’s most famous park. You’ve got to see this one up close to appreciate it truly!

Continuing toward the volcanic China Walls, you’ll hear the dramatic tale of Kamehameha’s rise to power, and his rival, Kalanikūpule, who was even willing to kill his own family to take control for himself.

Next, at the Hanauma Bay Lookout, you’ll find some of the most spectacular views on O’ahu. Be sure to have your camera at the ready! For a less crowded spot, follow the route to the next lookout, which most visitors miss.

After passing some seriously scenic shoreline, you’ll see Rabbit Island just off the coast and learn about the utterly failed rabbit farm that once operated here. Then you’ll come to Waimānalo Beach, the perfect stop for anyone seeking a little seclusion.

As you approach the town of Kailua, where former President Obama spent his winter vacations, you’ll hear a dramatic account of the Battle of Nu’uanu, which earned Kamehameha the title of King of Hawaii once and for all. And if you’re a kayaker, you won’t want to miss Kailua’s beach!

Up next, you’ll catch a glimpse of the last remaining Heiau on O’ahu. These ancient temples were deeply sacred to the Hawaiians and still hold a great deal of significance today.

After that, you’ll find a trail to one of Oahu Tours’ famous waterfalls. If you’re craving more nature, the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden will be just ahead, offering a staggering 400 acres of carefully cultivated flora.

You might not expect a vast Buddhist temple in Hawaii, but that’s the next stop! After checking out the Byodo-In Temple, you’ll reach the Kualoa Ranch. A show biz favorite, this ranch has appeared in everything from Jurassic Park to Hawaii Five-O and much more!

Feeling peckish? You’ll soon arrive at Hukilau Marketplace, a quaint cluster of restaurants and gift shops that retains its original 1950s charm.

Wildlife enthusiasts will love what comes next: a colossal wildlife refuge and Turtle Beach, frequented by the enormous Hawaiian green sea turtles. Then it’s on to Sunset Beach, the perfect spot to catch the day’s final rays of light. You’ll then head to the historic Dole Plantation, where the tour concludes.

What You'll See

Welcome to o'ahu.

Get ready for a totally comprehensive tour of Hawaii's most populous island: O'ahu. Home to the city of Honolulu, this island is chock full of culture, natural beauty, and fascinating history--all of which you'll experience during your drive!

Pearl Harbor

The tour begins in Pearl Harbor, where a surprise attack on December 7th, 1941 changed the course of history.

As you drive through Honolulu, you'll learn about the city's unexpectedly humble origins, and how it became the hub it is today.

Bishop Museum

One of the first landmarks you'll pass is the Bishop Museum. This isn't just the largest museum in Hawaii, but also has a surprisingly sweet love story behind it!

Aloha Tower

Get a good look at the Aloha Tower next. This iconic waterside tower once greeted all travelers arriving in Honolulu, because everyone arrived by boat.

Iolani Palace/King Kamehameha Statue

Next, you'll pass the impressive Iolani Palace, once home to Hawaiian royalty, as well as a statue of King Kamahamaha, a hero you'll hear plenty about along the way.

Ala Moana Beach/ Regional Park

The first beach you'll see is Ala Moana Beach, a pristine stretch of sand which, believe it or not, used to be a garbage dump! But don't worry, it's perfectly clean now, and great for swimming.

King David Kal?kaua Statue

Next, you'll pass a statue of King David Kalakaua, Hawaii's last king.

Waikiki Beach and Duke Kahanamoku

The next beach you'll reach is Waikiki Beach, made famous by the legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku. Duke is responsible for bringing surfing to the world at large and bringing major recognition to this beach.

Kapi’olani Park

Your route takes you next past Kapi'olani Park, another beautiful space which was once little more than a soggy bit of marshland.

Diamond Head State Monument

After that, you'll come to Diamond Head State Monument, an immense crater left by a volcanic explosion. It's now become Hawaii's most popular park!

Diamond Head Beach Park

You'll also see Diamond Head Beach, which sparkles unlike any other beach around. Back in the 1800s, explorers actually thought the calcite crystals in the sand here were diamonds!

China Walls

As you continue, you'll reach the China Walls, an impressive formation of natural walls which some say rival the Great Wall of China!

Hanauma Bay Lookout

Get some unbeatable views up next at Hanauma Bay Lookout, and don't forget to snap a few pictures while you're there!

Lanai Lookout

Lanai Lookout is next, and it's especially good if you're trying to get away from the crowd.

Halona Blowhole Lookout

The next lookout, Halona Blowhole Lookout, offers views of a peculiar rock formation which shoots water into the air when waves crash against it.

Pele's Chair

If you trek along the shore a bit, you'll come to Pele's Chair, a natural formation which some believe to be the chair of Pele, a volcanic goddess.

Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline and Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail

Up next is Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, which is exactly what it sounds like. If you're a fan of ocean views, this makes for a wonderful stroll.

Rabbit Island

As you drive, you'll catch sight of Rabbit Island. Once home to a rabbit farm, this island is now mostly untouched by humans.

Waimānalo Beach

Travelers seeking a pristine beach that doesn't see the same crowds as others will love Waimanalo Beach, a stretch of white sand sheltered by a wall of ironwood trees.

Up next is the unassuming town of Kailua. Unassuming, that is, except for the fact that former president Barack Obama spent his winters here!

Kailua Beach

Your route takes you next to Kailua Beach, a favorite spot among kayakers and swimmers alike.

Ulupō Heiau State Historic Site

Next, you'll pass the Ulupo Heiau State Historic Site. This increidble archaeological site is home to an ancient Hawaiian temple called a Heiau, which is almost 500 years old!

Golf on O’ahu

You'll also pass the Pali Golf Course and hear all about the plentiful offerings for golfers on O'ahu.

Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout/Likeke Falls/Likeke Falls Trailhead

After that, you'll arrive at Nu'uanu Pali Lookout, a splendid vista which is also right near a trail leading to some sparkling waterfalls.

Lulumahu Falls

Looking for more waterfalls? You'll find one at the end of a trail up ahead, which leads to the gorgeous, secluded Lulumahu Falls.

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

Up next is the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, home to a staggering 400 acres of tropical flora from all over the world. There's even a campground within the garden!

Continuing on, you'll reach the town of He'eia and hear the wild legend behind its name.

The Byodo-In Temple

You won't want to miss the next stop, an elaborate Buddhist temple called the Byodo-In Temple. It was built as an exact to-scale replica of the temples one would find in Japan!

Kualoa Ranch

As you drive, you'll pass Kualoa Ranch, a sprawling jungle ranch which has been the filming location for countless Hollywood hits, including Jurassic Park, Hawaii Five-O, and Lost!

Kualoa Rock Beach

Kualoa Rock Beach, up next, offers some great lounging opportunities, though swimmers will find the rocky shore a bit uncomfortable to wade along.

Kahana Bay Beach Park

The next beach, Kahana Bay Beach, isn't just a great stretch of sand, but is also packed with history! Archaeologists have found all sorts of pre-contact relics buried in the sand here.

Ahupua'a ‘O Kahana State Park

Ahupua'a 'O Kahana State Park is next, offering plenty of lush greenery and stunning hikes for those looking to stretch their legs.

Maunawila Heiau

Continuing on, you'll pass the remnants of another Heiau, though this one hasn't held up to the ravages of time quite as well as the last one.

Hukilau Marketplace

Those looking to stop for a snack or a souvenir will want to stop at the next landmark: Hukilau Marketplace. This iconic market styles itself just like a classic 1950s Hawaiian market would.

Mālaekahana State Recreation

Beach campers will absolutely want to stop at the next spot, Malaekahana State Recreation Area. This shoreline camping area makes for some seriously memorable mornings!

Gunstock Ranch

After that, you'll pass Gunstock Ranch, where you can take a ride on horseback if you want to change up your travels a bit!

James Campbell Wildlife Refuge

Next is the James Campbell Wildlife Refuge, where you'll learn the legend of how some of O'ahu's most recognizable birds got their iconic plumage.

Turtle Beach

After that is Turtle Beach, which is exactly what you'd expect. If you're here at the right time, you're bound to see some sea turtles!

Kawela Bay Beach Park

Continue driving to Kawela Bay Beach, home to some of the calmest waters on the island thanks to an offshore reef.

Sunset Beach Park

If the day is winding down, one of the best spots to be is your next stop: Sunset Beach. This is, hands down, one of the best spots on the island to catch a proper Hawaiian sunset.

Banzai Pipeline

As you drive, you'll pass the infamous Banzai Pipeline. This death-defying surf break has challenged some of the most famous surfers around for years, and not all of them survive it.

Shark’s Cove

After that is Shark's Cove. Don't worry though, it gets its name not because sharks infest the waters, but instead because it looks a little bit like a shark when viewed from above.

Waimea Bay/Waimea Bay Beach Park/Waimea Valley

One of the last beaches on your tour is Waimea Bay. This isn't just any beach, but has been featured in high-octane Hollywood adventures like Point Break!

Haleʻiwa Beach Park

The final beach you'll see is Hale'iwa Beach, which has some BBQs and picnic tables for folks looking to wind down with a picturesque picnic.

Dole Plantation

Your final stop is at the historic Dole Plantation, a window back in time which also features a train ride and the world's largest maze for some fun family activities. The tour concludes here.

Bonus Tour Stop 1: Jackass Ginger Pool

About a half-mile down the hiking trail to your left is one of Oahu’s most popular and idyllic swimming holes. In Hawaiian, this place is called Kahuailanawai - “site of tranquil water”. But it was renamed Jackass Ginger Pool about a hundred years ago by local youths who spotted a donkey tied up in a patch of ginger next to the pond itself.

Bonus Tour Stop 2: Queen Emma Summer Palace

To your left, the big white building with columns out front is Hānaiakamalama, the favorite retreat of Hawaii’s Queen Emma and her family. Born in 1836 to a native Hawaiian father and a white mother, she married King Kamehameha IV and reigned as his queen until his death in 1863. During her time as queen, she and her son Albert spent time here at the summer palace, where she organized many of her humanitarian efforts.

Bonus Tour Stop 3: Kapena Falls

Coming up on your right is the trailhead for Kapena Falls, the island’s most accessible waterfall. It’s only a half-mile round trip to the falls and back, so it’s a nice quick stop if you’d like to see it for yourself. Just don’t go in the water - there are some nasty bacteria that live in this particular stream.

Bonus Tour Stop 4: Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden

To your right is Lili’uokalani Botanical Garden, the smallest of Honolulu’s five famous botanical gardens. This particular garden was gifted to the city by its namesake, Queen Lili’uokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii.

Bonus Tour Stop 5: Foster Botanical Garden

Across the street from the Lili’uokalani Garden is a similar park, called the Foster Botanical Garden. In the 1850s, this land was leased to a German botanist named William Hillebrand, who planted a wide variety of unique trees and plants on the property.

Bonus Tour Stop 6: Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa State Wayside

Just up ahead is the entrance to Pu’u ‘Ualaka’a State Park, located on the sides of Mount Tantalus, an extinct cinder cone leftover from volcanic explosions about 50,000 years ago, long before there was anybody living on the islands. Here you’ll see some of the gorgeous natural forests that Hawaii is so famous for.

Bonus Tour Stop 7: Viewpoint

This viewing area to your right is well worth stopping at. From here, you can look out over the whole city of Honolulu, which is especially beautiful at night.

Bonus Tour Stop 8: Round Top Forest Reserve

Mount Tantalus is just one part of the Round Top Forest Reserve, which holds 99 acres of protected forest land here on Oahu. If you go walking along some of the trails here in the reserve, you’ll see plenty of plants and animals native to Hawaii.

Bonus Tour Stop 9: Tantalus Lookout - Puu Ualakaa State Park

You’ve reached the top of Mount Tantalus, the best sunset lookout on the whole island. This grassy hill on top of the cinder cone offers incredible panoramic views of Waikiki, Diamond Head, and the rest of the surrounding area. Feel free to take some time and enjoy the view.

Bonus Tour Stop 10: Mānoa Falls Trail

If you park here, you can reach the trailhead for the Manoa Falls Trail, one of the oldest and most popular hiking spots on Oahu. The trails out here date back to the ancient Hawaiians, who would follow these paths through the forest to hunt and gather plants. At the end of this trail is Manoa Falls, a 150 foot waterfall that the indigenous Hawaiians used as a natural shower.

Bonus Tour Stop 11: Manoa Falls Trail 2

As you walk through the forest here, it’s easy to feel like you’re in a whole other world from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. The trail you’re walking on now has been in use for over a thousand years, so allow yourself to be transported back.

Bonus Tour Stop 12: Manoa Falls

Just up ahead are the Manoa Falls, the last stop on the tour. With a height of 150 ft, it’s easy to see why so many people come here to check out the waterfall. Fans of blockbuster movies might also recognize Manoa Falls from a scene in Jurassic World where the two child stars leap from the top of the falls to escape the deadly Indominus Rex.

Circle Island

Follow the coast all the way to the North Shore and return back to town through the center of the island

The circle island ride is a must do experience for experienced riders who have a motorcycle license*. Follow the coast around Diamond Head, past Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach, Waimanalo, Kailua, through Kaneohe and along the Windward Side past the Polynesian Cultural Center and see the Seven Mile miracle from Sunset Beach to Haleiwa. Then head back down through the center of the island, past the Dole Plantation, Pearl Harbor, and into Honolulu to complete your epic trip through Downtown, Ala Moana and into Waikiki. Make sure to take your swimwear and sunscreen, because some of the world’s most beautiful beaches are along this route.

*Please note that you can do this ride on a moped, without a motorcycle license. It is a very long ride for a moped with a 49cc engine. The riding can become difficult at times and you may need to ride along the shoulder, since your rental won’t keep up with traffic. You will also have to avoid all of the major highways (We’ve included directions for mopeds below to help you navigate safely.). The ride is unforgettable, but also not for everybody, so please make your best judgement. Also, if you decide not to complete the Circle Island ride, you’ll already have completed the East Side ride, which is a must-see for all visitors to Oahu.

Circle Island Tour Route

DIRECTIONS:

  • Head towards the ocean on Kapahulu Ave.
  • Turn Left on Kalakaua Ave.

(Ride past the Waikiki Aquarium and the War Memorial on the right, and Kapiolani Park on the left. After the water fountain, continue straight and explore the historic homes on Coconut Ave. until it intersects Diamond Head Road)

  • Turn Right on Diamond Head Road

(Climb to the top of Diamond Head Road where views of local surfers and the Diamond Head Lighthouse await. Enjoy driving through the “Beverly Hills of Oahu” as Diamond Head Road becomes Kahala Ave.)

  • Turn Left onto the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) at the Stop Sign

(Stay on the bike path on the highway and be prepared to ride with some pretty fast traffic against strong winds. Please be aware of cars making right turns from the far right lane)

  • Continue on the 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) for approximately 13 miles
  • Turn Left onto the 61 (Pali) Highway at the fork in the highway. You’ll see Castle Medical Center on the right as you turn onto the Pali
  • Turn Right onto the 83 (Kahekili) Highway towards Kaneohe
  • Continue onto the 830 and then back onto the 83 (Kamehameha) Highway to enjoy the scenic drive around the Northeastern coast of Oahu

( This 35 mile stretch of highway takes you out of mountainous, green Kaneohe and onto the oceanside stretch of the ride. You’ll ride through the picturesque towns of Hauula, Laie, Kahuku, and Pupukea. Please use caution as the 830 (Kahekili) Highway is largely a 2-lane road, so be aware of fast-moving traffic and pull over if there are cars waiting behind you. Enjoy the gorgeous views and drive with aloha!)

  • Turn Right at the Haleiwa North Shore sign to ride through Historic Haleiwa Town
  • As you exit Haleiwa at the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit to continue onto the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway

(You’ll pass the famous Dole Pineapple Plantation on the left as you ride into central Oahu)

  • Turn Left onto Wilikina Dr. to remain on the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway
  • At the H2 Junction, remain on Wilikina Dr. and then turn right to continue on the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway through Waipio and Mililani

(If you’re riding a scooter and have a motorcycle license, merge onto H2 to head back into Honolulu)

  • At the H1 Junction in Pearl City, turn left to continue on the 99 (Kamehameha) Highway and pass the Pearl Harbor Memorial as you head towards Honolulu
  • Take the exit for the 92 (Nimitz) Highway and continue onto Ala Moana Blvd.
  • Turn Right onto Kalakaua Ave. and follow it through the main Waikiki Strip
  • Turn Left onto Kapahulu Ave.
  • Turn Left onto Lemon Road to return to the shop
