Cruise kids clubs: All your questions answered about camps at sea

Erica Silverstein

Quality time together is a hallmark of a great family vacation, but sometimes kids just want to play with their peers — and adults need a break. Cruise lines understand these dual needs deeply and have designed ships accordingly, with amazing, expansive cruise kids clubs.

Kids clubs give families more choices in daytime and evening activities because they have options to hang out together or spend time apart. The clubs take the pressure off parents to find fun, age-appropriate activities for their kids all day long while suppressing their own needs for R&R and couples time. Also, kids who need video game time or social interaction with new friends can escape their siblings and "boring" adults for an hour or two ... or more.

What is a kids club on a cruise ship?

norwegian cruise line vegan food

Cruise kids clubs are a combination of daycare, camp and a super-cool clubhouse. Families can drop off their kids and teens for as little as an hour to as long as nearly a full day for supervised play with other cruisers their age. The spaces for kids on a cruise ship are often clustered together, though tween and teen clubs might be separate.

Kids are not required to visit the kids clubs and can spend as much or as little time in the facilities as they and their families choose. Younger kids must be signed in and out by an adult caregiver; older children and teens can sign themselves in and out.

The kids clubs are run by the ship's youth staff, who are trained and experienced in childcare. For example, Royal Caribbean requires a four-year university degree in education or a related field (or an international equivalent) and three to five years of work experience in childcare. Youth staff on all lines take more of an active role in activities with younger kids and serve more as cool facilitators with the teens.

What are the ages for kids clubs on cruise ships?

Each cruise line divides up its kids clubs differently, but you can expect that the littlest kids and oldest teens will not be together.

The main kids club typically accepts children as young as 3 (and toilet trained) and goes up to 10, 11 or 12, depending on whether the ship has a separate tween club. Tween clubs are often for kids ages 11 or 12 to 14, and teen clubs take 13- or 14-year-olds through 17-year-olds.

Your 18-year-old high schooler will not be able to visit the teen club, so keep that in mind if you're planning to take a family cruise during spring break of your child's senior year, for example.

Some lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line , will accept kids in the club as young as 2 years old. Other lines, like Disney Cruise Line , have nurseries for babies and toddlers younger than 3.

The younger kids club might also divide attendees into smaller age groups for certain activities. For example, MSC Cruises offers a Mini Club for kids ages 3 to 6 and a Junior Club for kids ages 7 to 11. Carnival divides its Camp Ocean into Penguins (2 to 5 years old), Stingrays (6 to 8 years old) and Sharks (9 to 11 years old).

Are kids clubs on cruises free?

Yes! All kids club activities during the day and early evening for kids and teens are included in your cruise fare.

However, you might have to pay extra to drop off babies and toddlers at onboard nurseries. Also, late-night childcare for kids in the main club — usually starting at 10 or 11 p.m. — might cost extra on your ship. Both are often charged at an hourly rate for the time you use, with the occasional sibling discount.

What are the kids club spaces like?

norwegian cruise line vegan food

Kids clubs for 3- to 12-year-olds are often multipurpose spaces that the ship's youth staff can set up with tables and chairs or clear out for group games. They all come equipped with video game areas, with stations set up with monitors and game consoles, and some might have other high-tech games on the walls, floors or tables, or other games like air hockey or foosball. The spaces often have colorful decor, perhaps themed to the ocean or nature.

On Royal Caribbean 's larger ships, you'll find multiroom play areas with separate spaces for art workshops, science experiments, sports and active games, and theatrical productions. Disney's kids clubs have rooms themed to different movies and characters, including a replica of the Millennium Falcon from "Star Wars," a play area done up like Andy's room from "Toy Story" and Tinkerbell's Pixie Hollow. MSC Cruises' kids clubs have dedicated areas for building with Lego bricks.

Tween and teen lounges are cool hangouts with lots of comfy seating areas for chatting with newfound friends, checking social media accounts, playing games and watching movies. Some have dance floors with DJ booths and mocktail or soda bars. A few even have outdoor patio space for sunbathing, occasionally with a hot tub, splash pool or lawn games.

Related: The 5 best cruises for teens

Nurseries and play spaces for younger cruisers have age-appropriate toys and soft flooring, perhaps even a small climbing structure or slide. Nurseries will have a quiet area with cribs and cots in the back for naptime, as well as diaper changing stations.

Kids clubs all have bathrooms in them, often with kid-height facilities.

What activities can my child do in a cruise kids club?

Cruise ship kids clubs offer a mix of free play and guided group activities, so there's something for every child to enjoy.

Kids can enjoy traditional camp activities like arts and crafts, silly group games and scavenger hunts around the ship. They can also get active with sports competitions in the club or up on the ship's sports courts. When it's screen time, kids can challenge each other to video games or gather together to watch a movie on a big screen. Science experiments and puppet shows are also popular activities.

Tween and teen activities lean more toward parties, foosball tournaments, sports and group games, with lots of unstructured time for hanging out. Events might take place around the ship, not just in the tween or teen club.

The youngest cruisers can enjoy story time, song sessions and other toddler games.

Are the kids clubs open all day?

norwegian cruise line vegan food

Open hours for cruise kids clubs will vary by ship and itinerary. On one sailing, you might find different opening times for sea days versus port days.

Generally, kids clubs are open from 9 or 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Some will be open until midnight or 1 a.m., and some will charge an hourly rate to watch your kids after 10 or 11 p.m. Some kids clubs might close for lunch or dinner, so be sure to check when you drop off your kids the time you need to pick them up.

On port days, cruise kids clubs often open an hour before disembarkation time, especially clubs that allow parents to drop off their kids and explore in port without them.

Tween and teen clubs might not open until the afternoon to accommodate late sleepers. On the flip side, these clubs will run programming later in the evening without additional fees.

Is there food at cruise kids clubs?

Cruise kids clubs don't generally serve food due to the number and variety of food allergies found in the hundreds of kids who could be on board a ship at any time.

Some cruise ship kids clubs might offer special group lunches or dinners in the buffet or even offer a cooking class. Clubs that offer port day care while parents are ashore will, of course, make sure kids get lunch.

Can kids clubs accommodate children with disabilities?

Cruise lines try to be as accommodating as possible of travelers with disabilities, and the youth staff is happy to work with families to welcome kids with special needs into the kids clubs. However, do not expect one-on-one care or highly trained special needs professionals.

Several lines, such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises, require youth staff members to undergo autism awareness training. Carnival has partnered with KultureCity to become "sensory inclusive" certified to work with guests with autism, ADHD and Down syndrome. Its kids clubs are stocked with helpful items, such as weighted vests, sensory games and conversation cards.

Families should notify a cruise line's special needs department ahead of sailing to alert them to their child's needs. Once on board, you might be able to move your child to a different age group to be with a sibling or to accommodate developmental differences. Most youth staff cannot help with toileting but might be willing to give caregivers a pager so they can come and help when required.

Alternatively, ship staff might allow a parent or caregiver to accompany a child with special needs to certain kids club activities.

How do cruise kids clubs handle safety?

norwegian cruise line vegan food

Youth staff are all carefully vetted; they're required to be first aid-certified and undergo reference and background checks.

Ships have protocols for what to do in case of an emergency if children are in the cruise kids clubs. Youth staff will either bring them to their muster stations or to a central pickup point, and at no time will leave children unattended.

Additionally, kids clubs have rules for fire safety, including a maximum occupancy. During peak family travel times, you might find that you can't drop off your child at the kids club when you wish because it has reached full occupancy, and you'll need to wait for someone to leave before your kid can enter.

Which cruise lines have kids clubs?

All of the big-ship cruise lines have kids clubs. Cruise lines with a greater family focus will often devote more onboard space to youth facilities, though newer, bigger ships will typically have larger kids clubs. Lines like Holland America and Celebrity Cruises are more adult-focused and still have kids clubs, but they might not have the same wow factor.

Here's an overview of the major cruise lines' kids clubs:

Carnival Cruise Line

The Carnival cruise kids club is called Camp Ocean, and its tween and teen clubs are Circle C and Club O2. Camp Ocean takes kids as young as 2 and is divided into three age groups: Penguins (2 to 5 years old), Stingrays (6 to 8 years old) and Sharks (9 to 11 years old).

Celebrity Cruises

Camp at Sea is Celebrity's cruise kids club. Younger cruisers are divided into Shipmates (3 to 5), Cadets (6 to 9) and Captains (10 to 12), and teens (13 to 17) get their own Teen Club. Some ships have a special STEM at Sea program in partnership with the Frost Science Museum.

Disney Cruise Line

The Disney cruise kids club is called the Oceaneer Club, sometimes with a second space called the Oceaneer Lab. Its tween and teen clubs are Edge and Vibe, and it offers the It's a Small World Nursery for babies and tots under 3. The Oceaneer Club is open to kids ages 3 to 10; they can choose from a number of simultaneous activities in the Disney-themed spaces.

Holland America

Holland America's aptly named Kids Club is divided into the Kids Program (ages 3 to 6), Tweens Program (ages 7 to 12) and Teens Program (ages 13 to 17). The kids club does not operate on 25-night or longer cruises, though the line will put on some activities for children sailing on these grand and world voyages.

Norwegian Cruise Line

The Norwegian Cruise Line kids club is named Splash Academy (ages 3 to 12), and its teen club is Entourage (13 to 17). The line also has a Guppies open play program for kids ages 6 months to 3 years, but an adult is required to accompany each child; it's not a drop-off service like the other kids clubs. Additionally, NCL does not offer kids programming when the ship is docked in port.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises' kids club, Doremiland, is divided into five clubs based on age: Baby Club (up to 3 years old), Mini Club (ages 3 to 6), Junior Club (7 to 11), Young Club (12 to 14) and Teen Club (15 to 17). MSC Cruises is an outlier in that it offers free drop-off childcare for kids under 3, as well as spaces for parents and their babies and toddlers to play together.

Princess Cruises

The kids club on Princess Cruises is Camp Discovery. Kids ages 3 to 7 hang out in The Treehouse, kids ages 8 to 12 play in The Lodge and teens 13 to 17 hang out in the Beach House. Many activities are inspired by the cruise line's partnership with media company Discovery.

Royal Caribbean

The Royal Caribbean cruise kids club is Adventure Ocean. On newer ships, AO Juniors (kids ages 3 to 5) are separate from AO Kids (ages 6 to 12), while on older ships, they might be divided into separate spaces for Aquanauts (3 to 5 years old), Explorers (6 to 8 years old) and Voyagers (9 to 12 years old). Teens ages 13 to 17 are together in the teen club, and all but a few ships have nurseries for kids ages 6 to 36 months.

Do small ships or luxury lines offer kids clubs?

norwegian cruise line vegan food

Some luxury lines embrace children, while others ban them from their decks. In general, most luxury lines will offer some kind of programming during school holidays when more kids than usual are on board.

Luxury cruise lines such as Crystal , Explora Journeys and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection actually have small kids clubs on board with programming either all the time or when enough kids are present. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships do not have youth facilities, but the line runs its Club Mariner Youth Program with age-appropriate activities when enough children are on board.

Lines like Silversea , Seabourn , Oceania and Azamara allow children on board but do not run special programs for them, though you might find an exception during Christmas week or another cruise with a greater-than-usual number of kids on board.

Some lines have age minimums. You must be 18 years old to cruise with Viking and 8 years old on Windstar Cruises .

Bottom line

Cruise ship kids clubs provide a safe space for young travelers to meet and hang out with peers and enjoy age-appropriate activities in inviting spaces. The drop-off programming allows parents and caregivers to get some alone time to enjoy the ship's spa, upscale dining venue or adults-only spaces. Kids can join in the fun for as much of the day and evening as they want; many families will spend time on the ship together and only go their separate ways for a few hours per day.

Note that some young cruisers love the kids club and want to spend whole afternoons there, and others go once and refuse to go back. Your child's love or dislike of the kids club might even change over time or with different ships.

My best advice is to send your kid on the first evening to meet the counselors and the other children and to check out the activities when there is no expectation that they stay a certain amount of time. The more they feel that they can control when they go (and not that you are ditching them to have fun without them), the more likely they are to have a good experience.

Complete Guide To Eating Vegan Or Vegetarian On NCL

by Prof. Cruise · Published September 24, 2019 · Updated July 16, 2021

norwegian cruise line vegan food

Years ago, upon checking in for my first cruise aboard NCL, I was heartened to see the following signage:

norwegian cruise line vegan food

“Oh good,” I thought, “NCL is vegetarian friendly!” And since then, I’ve cruised once on the Bliss, twice on the Breakaway, once on the Jewel, and twice on the Pearl (including a 21-day sailing). In fact, I’ve spent so many days on NCL as a vegetarian (sometimes vegan – what can I say, I’m wishy-washy) I could dress up like a carrot and serve as the official spokesperson.

But because I suffer from claustrophobia and faulty temperature control causing me to overheat creating a fire hazard, the costume is out. So instead, I’ll elaborate here on my experience, offer you my best tips for eating vegetarian or vegan on NCL, and provide you with sample menus and photos. I’ll also provide you with some general tips for cruising as a vegetarian or vegan that apply across cruise lines.

Eating Vegetarian In The Main Dining Room (MDR) On NCL

norwegian cruise line vegan food

As a vegetarian you’ll be able to order from the regular breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus in the main dining rooms on NCL. While your selection will be more limited, there are always vegetarian appetizers and entrees offered and items are clearly labeled as vegetarian. As a vegan, this won’t be possible, but we’ll get to that later.

Below, find sample breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. The breakfast and lunch menus are pretty standard fleet-wide, but the dinner menus may vary some (these were from a 7-day sailing to Alaska on the Bliss in late summer 2019). I have highlighted vegetarian choices with a carrot and provided photos of all the vegetarian items we ordered. I didn’t include dessert menus as all desserts are vegetarian, but if you want to take a look at them, they can be found here .

Vegetarian Items On The NCL Breakfast Menu

I love eating breakfast in the main dining room on NCL. The menu is among the best of any line, in my opinion.

Vegetarian Items On The NCL Lunch Menu

There’s only one vegetarian entree offered on the lunch menu on NCL, the Spanish frittata. And while it’s okay, it’s not my favorite and, as such, I generally only choose to eat lunch in the dining room once per cruise, mainly for the desserts. I wish NCL would offer rotating lunch menus like many other lines. This lunch menu has been the same literally every single day I’ve ever sailed NCL. If variety is the spice of life, this lunch menu is a soggy low-sodium french fry (especially for vegetarians).

Vegetarian Items On The NCL Dinner Menus

On my more recent cruises aboard NCL I was happy to see a vegetarian pasta, the 3-cheese baked ziti, added to the “classic entrees” available every day. It’s hard to go wrong with pasta covered in baked cheese and this serves as a nice backup in the event the other vegetarian entree has something no human should ever be expected to consume under any circumstances, but especially on vacation: olives. The bruschetta was also on the menu as an appetizer every night and is one of my favorites.

Eating Vegan In The MDR On Your NCL Cruise

While this really ticks off certain vegans (and I get that, I really do – it’s just one of my many failures, second only to my formal night fashion choices as the most obvious and offensive), I consider myself a “weekday vegan” or an “aspirational vegan” now. But I’ve gone through stretches where I’ve been fully committed, going so far as to voluntarily eat fruit for dessert (back before the days of Chocolate Covered Katie ). I’ve even cruised a number of times as a vegan, two of which were on NCL. So how does eating vegan in the MDR on NCL work exactly (this also applies to any other dietary restrictions – gluten free, sugar free, low salt, dairy free, etc.)?

Contact NCL in advance.

When you make your cruise reservation, be sure to indicate that you have a diet restriction. There’s a place to do this online, if you’re booking that way. If you’re booking over the phone either direct with NCL or through a travel agent, be sure to mention it to them so they can include it on your reservation. I’ve never been convinced that doing this makes any difference at all, but I always do it anyway. Can’t hurt, right?

Meet with the maître d’.

Stop by the main dining room on embarkation day and request to speak with the maître d’. Mention to them that you have special dietary needs and make sure it’s noted in their system. Ask them what you should do in order for your diet to be accommodated in the MDR for the first night.

Mention it again as you’re checking in with the host and again to your wait team.

While I love the concept of Freestyle Dining (as opposed to a set dining time) on NCL, it can make eating in the MDR with a special diet more challenging initially. Persistence is the key. As you’re checking in with the host, be sure to let him/her know that you’re a vegan and require a special order. This may or may not get passed along to whomever seats you and may or may not get passed along to your wait team. To be safe, expect that it won’t and mention it to your wait team once they’ve introduced themselves.

Expect the first night to be more challenging, but for it to go smoothly from there.

In order to get a decent vegan meal in the MDR, you need to order it the night before with the Special Diets Coordinator (that may not be their exact title, but it’s something like that). On the first night, that will not have been possible, so generally you’ll get a simple vegetable plate or a modified version of whatever the vegetarian item on the menu is that night. You’ll usually order this with your regular wait team.

Meet with the Special Diets Coordinator.

However, your wait team will contact the Special Diets Coordinator who will meet with you toward the end of that first meal. They will ask you about your restrictions and preferences and will help you settle on a menu for the following evening. They will record your cabin number and tie that to your order.

On both occasions when I dined vegan on NCL, the Special Diets Coordinators were outstanding, going above and beyond to make sure I had satisfactory meals. Each time I tipped them extra on the last day to communicate my appreciation and to counter any negative stereotypes that may be out there about vegans (the only remotely radical thing about me is my penchant to forget deodorant. And while that makes me smell like a hippy, it’s entirely unintentional – you won’t find any flowers in my hair).

Mention to your wait team that you have a special order.

From the second night forward, you’ll need to mention to your wait team that you have a dietary restriction and already placed your order with the Special Diet Coordinator. They will ask for your cabin number and will deliver your order.

Rinse and repeat.

Each night during your dessert course, the Special Diets Coordinator (or sometimes your waiter if the coordinator is busy) will come over and discuss your menu for the next evening. You’ll do this for the duration of your cruise until the last sad night when you slip him a $20 and say, “there’s more where that came from,” as you beg him to accompany you back to Seattle. He will giggle uncomfortably and attempt to match your solemn tone, “I wish I could – I’ll miss you so much too,” but with crossed fingers hiding behind his back.

Is it really that simple?

Mostly, yes. But be aware that it may take some persistence in the beginning (if no one approaches you on that first evening to take your order for the following night, be sure to remind your wait staff) and some extra time. Sometimes my items took a bit longer to arrive and occasionally I had to wait a few minutes after finishing my dessert for the Special Diets Coordinator to come around to take my order (be patient, they are really busy). But all-in-all I’ve had generally positive experiences eating vegan in the main dining room on NCL. The food is nothing like what you would get at a land-based restaurant specializing in vegan cuisine (understandable), but it’s still pretty good. The chef even prepared me a few vegan cakes, which was a really nice surprise.

Is The Buffet On NCL Vegetarian Friendly?

norwegian cruise line vegan food

As a vegetarian, my relationship with the buffet on NCL is sort of like shacking up with Lennie Kravitz after he finally, after fifteen years of sending them, answered one of my fan letters, only to find he leaves his wet towels on the carpet. Okay, maybe no one besides me sends fan letters anymore (I like to support the post office), but the point is that the buffets on NCL are nearly perfect for a vegetarian, with one exceedingly irritating flaw. Is it a deal breaker? Of course not. Can it be rectified? Sure. But you’ll have to pick up the towels yourself. Or track down a member of the buffet staff to tell you if certain items are vegetarian, because nothing is labeled as such.

Certain items are obviously vegetarian, but other items such as pre-made soups, sauces, and rice, bean, and pasta dishes aren’t. Other lines, like Celebrity, have a label on each item identifying it as vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, or sugar free, saving both those with special diets and buffet staff tremendous time and hassle. This has not been my experience on NCL (please note in the comments if you’ve sailed on an NCL ship with labels).

Things vegetarians will love about the buffet on NCL.

But don’t fret, there’s so much for vegetarians to love on NCL buffets! I was thrilled to see vegetable broth offered as an option at the made-to-order soup station on the Bliss (another recent sailing on Princess didn’t offer a vegetarian broth option). And the pasta station is another great choice for vegetarians, with a variety of pastas, sauces, and toppings to mix it up.

norwegian cruise line vegan food

But my absolute favorite option at the buffet, and one of the things that keeps me coming back to NCL (my next sailing is booked for February), is the Indian food. If you’re an Indian food lover, NCL is your line (and I’ve tried the Indian food on many other lines). There are multiple delicious vegetarian options available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’m also a huge fan of the Chinese offerings available at breakfast, with the garlic rice my favorite.

norwegian cruise line vegan food

What about vegans? Are NCL buffets vegan friendly?

Rest assured, you won’t starve. But unless you’re satisfied with salad, fruit, and pasta with marinara sauce for the length of your sailing, the buffet will be more challenging if you’re a vegan. There may be other vegan items available, but nothing is labeled, so you’ll have to ask. This can be a hassle and you’re probably better off eating in the dining room for as many meals as you can. There is soy milk available, but you have to request it and it can be hard to find the appropriate person to ask (ask any buffet staff person and they will try to direct you to the correct person).

Eating At Alternative and Specialty Restaurants As A Vegetarian On NCL

norwegian cruise line vegan food

As a vegetarian, I don’t generally eat at specialty restaurants requiring an extra charge because I don’t find them a good value and the choices for vegetarians are usually quite limited, but you can find all the menus here . There are, however, some complimentary alternative restaurants I would recommend for vegetarians, if you’re on a ship that has them.

Complimentary Asian restaurants

Many NCL ships have a complimentary Asian restaurant and, although the names differ and the menus may vary slightly, generally there will be vegetable spring rolls and vegetarian fried rice available. I’ve also received a vegetable stir fry upon request (I assume this is also vegan, but double check to be sure). Maybe if we all keep begging they’ll eventually add a vegetarian noodle dish!

Identify your NCL ship’s Asian restaurant below:

Orchid Garden, Norwegian Gem Lotus Garden, Norwegian Pearl Chin Chin, Norwegian Jewel Jasmine Garden, Norwegian Jade Shanghai’s Noodle Bar, Norwegian Breakaway, Epic, and Getaway East Meets West, Pride of America Shogun, Norwegian Spirit Bamboo, Norwegian Dawn Ginza, Norwegian Star

Available on the Breakaway, Dawn, Epic, Escape, Gem, Getaway, Jewel, Pearl, and Star, O’Sheehan’s Bar and Grill has two vegetarian items listed on the menu, the spinach and artichoke dip and the chopped salad. Although not listed on the menu, you can also request a veggie burger.

Vegetarian items at The Local Bar and Grill on NCL

Available on the Bliss, Encore, and Joy, The Local Bar and Grill has more vegetarian options than O’Sheehan’s. My favorites were the watermelon Greek salad (this can also be prepared vegan – just ask) and the tortilla bowl (order it with no meat).

A Reality Check If You’re A Vegetarian Or Vegan Cruising For The First Time

Vegetarian and vegan on NCL

While it’s much easier to eat out as a vegetarian or even vegan now days, especially in urban areas – I can feast on vegan fare mimicking approximately 3,000 different meat preparations from every culture on earth as well as freeze-dried vegan ice cream suitable for space travel within a block of my apartment in downtown Seattle – the cruise industry is still lagging behind in terms of being vegetarian and vegan friendly.

And while I encourage my fellow vegetarians and vegans to continue to advocate for more and better options and fill out comment cards and surveys, as I always do, expressing specific needs and areas for improvement (“label buffet items as vegetarian”), there are realities that make catering to particular dietary requirements challenging on cruise ships.

Crowds make catering to vegetarians on a cruise harder

It’s hard enough to feed a family of four composed of a weekday vegan, a vegetarian six-year-old limited to one color (orange), an omnivore amateur weight lifter who obsessively counts grams of protein like a teacher tracking his preschoolers on a field trip to the aquarium, “1,2,3,4…OMG Jessica is submerged up to her knees in the middle of the touch pool!” and a dog so elderly he can’t get into the bed unassisted but manages a five foot vertical leap when it’s time for his carnivorous kibble.

Now imagine having to cook for and serve 2-4 thousand cruisers three (or six to eight if they’re Prof. Cruise) vacation-worthy meals a day with limited provisions in tight kitchens and dining rooms swaying and bobbing and sometimes jerking violently about.  With each guest having different standards and tastes and expectations.  It’s a challenge!  And they don’t always get it right, even for those without dietary restrictions.

2) The business of cruising

Cruise lines don't cater to vegans

Don’t forget that cruise lines are giant corporations in the business of maximizing profits for their owners and shareholders.  No corporate NCL employee is tasked with figuring out how they can better my individual cruise experience, they’re looking for ways to fill ships, cut expenses, and separate passengers from more of their dollars.

And because vegetarians, and especially vegans, make up such a small percentage of cruisers, our needs are not a high priority.  Which is not to say that cruise lines don’t make an effort, they do, but they don’t have to be great in order to remain profitable like a small, land-based restaurant does.

3) Language and cultural barriers

Very few cruise ship employees are native English speakers.  This is one of the things I love about cruising – meeting and getting to know people from all over the world. And, despite now having a Ph.D., I almost didn’t graduate from college due to a pesky language requirement.  So I know firsthand that learning another language as an adult is HARD and I have tremendous respect and admiration for those who work grueling jobs at sea, far away from home, in a second language, in order to provide for their families.

Cruise waiters will help you with your special dietary requests

But language and cultural differences can make it harder to communicate your questions and needs as a vegetarian or vegan.  A word for “vegetarian” doesn’t even exist in some languages.

My travels to China, where you’re more likely to see chicken feet on a menu than salad, have taught me to be very specific about my dietary needs.  When you tell people who aren’t very familiar with vegetarianism or veganism or may not have even heard those words in English before that you “don’t eat meat” or that you “don’t eat animal products” they may read the title of a menu item that doesn’t sound like it has meat and tell you it’s fine, when it’s actually made with chicken or beef or fish stock or flavored with other meat products.  This has happened to me many times on cruises, especially with soups and sauces.  They aren’t trying to mislead you, they just don’t fully understand what you’re asking.  Which brings me to my top tips for eating vegetarian or vegan on a cruise.

Top Tips For Eating Vegetarian Or Vegan On A Cruise

1) communicate, communicate, communicate.

Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus and vegetarians are from Neptune because it’s “far out” as in “rad” to fellow vegetarians, but “far out” as in furthest away and most alien to non vegetarians. That’s okay, we can still lose our money in the casino together and attend an art auction for the free champagne and gaze out at the water and mistaken every bloody seagull for something more interesting: “I see a whale spout at 4 o’clock! Oh wait, it’s another darn seagull diving for fish.”

And, like a relationship, when it comes to getting your dietary needs met on a cruise, communication is key. And also much harder than a simple platitude would suggest. Here are my tips:

Notify the cruise line in advance of your dietary restrictions.

Don’t expect it to make much of a difference, but do it anyway. Normally there’s a place in your online reservation where you can do this. If you can’t find it, call the cruise line or your travel agent. This will become part of your reservation and will be communicated to the ship. Although know that you will still need to alert and meet with the appropriate ship staff when you board. The ship may also stock more soy milk and such if they know in advance there are going to be vegan passengers.

Write it down.

Write down your special diet for your cruise.

I’ve found it helpful to make a detailed list of ingredients I can’t eat and another list of suitable substitutes and things I enjoy (keep them simple and present them as ideas not requirements) for my initial conversation with the head waiter in the main dining room (this is more relevant for vegans – vegetarians can usually order off the regular menu).

Ask specific questions.

Instead of asking “is this soup vegetarian?” ask “can you tell me what kind of broth this soup is prepared with?” Then you can follow up with, “I’m a vegetarian and don’t eat any meat, chicken, fish or beef/chicken broth.”

2) Be patient

Patience is required to eat vegan on a cruise.

Because you read this post in advance, you know that eating vegetarian or vegan on a cruise ship is going to require a bit of extra effort. Be patient with staff and know they are doing their best to help you. While I haven’t always had my question answered by the first person I asked or have had to wait for a time for a special request, I’ve found cruise ship staff exceedingly gracious, kind, and patient with me . So the least I can do is be patient with them , knowing they are doing the best they can considering the circumstances – most of which are out of their control.

I would use that old adage “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar” here, but vegetarians generally frown upon killing other sentient beings and vegans don’t eat honey. But, you get the picture.

3) Be content

This is not going to be the best food you’ve had. That’s true even for those without diet restrictions. But approach it with an attitude of good enough . And don’t get me wrong, I’ve always found a number of things I’ve LOVED on every cruise I’ve been on. Never have I returned home weighing anything less than 5 pounds over what I weighed at embarkation. #goals

4) Be flexible

Flexibility is required to eat vegan on a cruise.

Thankfully, if your entree in the main dining room contained olives or rotten grapes (who deceptively go by the name “raisins” to mislead the public), there are other options. Hit the buffet or the Asian restaurant or pub. With a little flexibility, no one, no matter how limiting their diet is, should ever go hungry on a cruise! And remember, cruise calories don’t count! I mean, it says so on this shirt (available from Amazon here ), so it must be true!

Must Know Tips For Enjoying Vegan Dining Options On A Norwegian Cruise Line Voyage

by Judith Eve | Jun 13, 2023 | Cruise Travel Tips

norwegian cruise line vegan food

Introduction

Setting sail on the Norwegian Cruise Line is a thrilling adventure that can quickly turn into a gastronomical extravaganza. While their world-renowned dining experience is one of the best, what about passengers with specific dietary needs? Fear not, vegans! Here's your comprehensive guide to finding delicious and satisfying vegan options on Norwegian Cruise Line.

Catering to Vegans Onboard Norwegian Cruise Line

There’s a common misconception that cruising isn’t suitable for those adhering to a vegan diet. However, that’s far from the truth, particularly when you're sailing with the Norwegian Cruise Line. As one of the most progressive cruise lines when it comes to food allergies and dietary restrictions, Norwegian offers a wide variety of scrumptious vegan choices that are guaranteed to tantalize your taste buds.

Decoding the Main Dining Menu

Navigating the main dining menu onboard Norwegian Cruise Line as a vegan might seem overwhelming at first. But rest assured, the crew is always ready to help you identify the vegan options available. On your first night, let the restaurant staff know about your dietary restrictions. They’ll happily guide you through the menu or even arrange for special meals to be prepared.

Every evening, the main dining room presents a different menu, with at least one vegan or easily modified vegan option. You'll find dishes such as the Mediterranean Vegetable and Bean Stew, Thai Vegetable Tofu Curry, and the wholesome Vegan Power Bowl.

Buffet Aboard: A Vegan's Paradise

The buffet aboard Norwegian Cruise Line is nothing short of a vegan's paradise. With an array of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes at your disposal, you can create your own delicious vegan dishes. Don’t miss out on the Indian section, which often serves vegetable curries, lentil dals, and rice – all entirely vegan and full of flavor.

Moreover, at breakfast, you can enjoy fruits, cereals, breads, and even plant-based milk options for your coffee. Just be sure to confirm with the staff about vegan-friendly cereals and bread options.

Specialty Restaurants: A Gourmet Vegan Experience

Looking for a more gourmet vegan experience onboard Norwegian Cruise Line? Specialty restaurants are your answer. Although not all items are explicitly marked as vegan, most menus can be modified upon request.

At 'Teppanyaki,' you can savor an entirely vegan meal with edamame, miso soup, garlic fried rice, and stir-fried vegetables. Over at 'Cagney’s Steakhouse,' the grilled Portobello mushrooms and vegetable medley are a must-try. Similarly, 'La Cucina' offers a variety of pasta dishes that can be veganized by replacing regular pasta with gluten-free pasta and skipping the cheese.

Plant-based Delights at the Garden Café

A little-known secret for vegans aboard Norwegian Cruise Line is the 'Garden Café.' Known for its comprehensive vegan section, it offers a rotating menu of plant-based delights such as lentil soup, vegetable stir fry, veggie burgers, and a variety of salads.

Delectable Vegan Desserts

Who says vegans can't indulge in desserts? Norwegian Cruise Line's dessert offerings include delightful sorbets in various flavors. Additionally, upon request, you can enjoy specially crafted vegan desserts such as apple crumble, chocolate avocado mousse, and even vegan ice cream.

Don’t Forget to Pre-Order

One of the best tips for enjoying vegan options on Norwegian Cruise Line is to pre-order your meals. By doing so, you ensure that the kitchen staff has ample time to prepare your vegan dishes to perfection. It also allows you to enjoy a seamless dining experience without having to worry about your next meal.

Preparing For Your Vegan Cruise Experience

A few key preparations can significantly enhance your vegan cruise experience on Norwegian Cruise Line. Before setting sail, contact Norwegian’s special dietary department. They'll guide you on the proper channels for informing the crew about your dietary restrictions. The more they're aware, the better they can accommodate your vegan dietary needs.

Moreover, you can also join online vegan cruise communities. Here, you can connect with fellow vegan cruisers, share experiences, tips, and gain insights into what to expect from your vegan cruise adventure.

Sustainable and Conscious Cruising

Choosing vegan options on Norwegian Cruise Line isn't just great for your health, but it's a step towards more sustainable and conscious cruising. Plant-based meals have a lower environmental footprint, aligning your cruise experience with the global efforts towards sustainability.

Norwegian Cruise Line also has a strong focus on sustainable practices, including waste reduction and energy efficiency. Thus, by choosing vegan, you're aligning with Norwegian's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Concluding Remarks

So there you have it, your complete guide to navigating dietary restrictions with vegan options on Norwegian Cruise Line. With a myriad of choices and a willingness to accommodate, you can rest assured that you'll have an incredible culinary experience at sea, without compromising your dietary preferences.

With the cruise line’s vegan-friendly approach, you’re guaranteed to have a hassle-free, enjoyable, and memorable cruising adventure. So go ahead, set sail on your next cruise vacation with Norwegian Cruise Line, and make your dining experience an exciting voyage of vegan discovery!

So, whether you're an experienced vegan cruiser or embarking on your first ever cruise, don't let dietary restrictions deter you. The Norwegian Cruise Line is not just vegan-friendly; it's a culinary haven for anyone looking to enjoy delectable plant-based meals at sea. With a wide variety of vegan options and a crew dedicated to accommodating your dietary needs, you're all set for a carefree and delicious cruising adventure.

Remember to communicate your dietary restrictions, ask for menu guidance, and pre-order when you can. Rest assured, you will not only survive but thrive with the vegan options on Norwegian Cruise Line!

My personal experience on th Norwegian Gem several years back was memorable as I requested vegan meals several times. The vegan Indian food offered was delicious, Chana Masala, and a few other dishes. And the vegan desserts were tasty and satisfying. Especially the vegan chocolate cake!

Lunch was easy at the buffet with so many vegan choices including salads, hummus, and veggie burgers.

Breakfast was fantastic with so many topping options for my oatmeal. Happy Cruising!

Tips for Cruising with a Special Diet

Tips for Cruising with a Special Diet

If you have allergies, a gluten sensitivity, keep a kosher diet, or have any other dietary restriction, you probably find it hard enough to stick to your diet while at home. So the thought of traveling while on a special diet might feel overwhelming, especially since experiencing new food is often one of the most exciting parts of travel. However, managing dietary restrictions while cruising shouldn’t keep you from enjoying your vacation. A restricted diet should not mean a restricted trip.

A cruise vacation is one of the best trips for someone with a dietary restriction. When you cruise with Norwegian, you won't have to worry that your nutritional limitations will keep you from having the vacation of your life.

Norwegian Cruise Line Onboard Dining

Norwegian's chefs are trained to prepare food for a variety of diets - vegetarian, sugar-free, gluten-free and more. Norwegian makes an effort to accommodate all passenger dietary needs and to provide suitable alternatives on request for those with food allergies or other special needs.

Norwegian also offers a variety of vegetarian meals on most menus. You do not need to make a special request for these meals. The menu will indicate whether or not a dish is vegetarian.

Here are some more tips to help you cruise with a special diet.

Notify the Cruise Line When You Book

Let your travel agent or your cruise reservations agent know about your dietary needs as soon as you book your cruise. Norwegian requires notice 30 days before sailing. Advance notice allows the cruise line to fulfill your request. However, the earlier you inform your reservations or travel agent, the better.

Contact Accessible Travel

Norwegian Cruise Line has a special toll-free phone number for accessible travel . The number is 00800 0310 21 21. In addition to notifying your reservation or travel agent of your special diet, it is also best to talk with an Access Coordinator. They can help ensure that your needs are met to the extent possible so that you have a wonderful cruising experience.

Talk to the Restaurant Manager

When you board the cruise ship , make sure that the restaurant manager or person in charge of onboard dining is aware of your dietary needs. Norwegian offers Freestyle Dining , which means that there are no fixed dining times or tables. You can dine where and when you want. Since you won’t likely have the same dining staff every night, talking to the dining manager will ensure that your dietary needs are taken care of — no matter where you choose to dine.

Book A “Behind The Scenes Ship Tour”

A Behind the Scenes Ship Tour gives you an up-close look at the inner workings of the ship. You'll have the opportunity to access areas that are usually off-limits, including the galley, which is where the food is prepared. You'll also get the chance to ask the crew members questions. You can inquire about how they accommodate allergies and other dietary restrictions. It can give you peace-of-mind knowing what steps Norwegian's crew takes to accommodate special diets. The Behind the Scenes Tour is an exclusive tour offered only once during the cruise. It usually fills up quickly, so it is best to book the tour on the first day of your trip.

Norwegian Cruise Line Onboard Dining

When you cruise with Norwegian , you’ll find that a dietary restriction won’t stop you from enjoying flavorful, mouth-watering foods on your vacation.

The Plant-Based Guide to Cruise Vacations

By Lindsay Morris ,

Healthy eating might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you consider taking a cruise. But as demand grows for more healthful vegan options, several seafaring companies are getting on board with special menus and themed voyages that celebrate a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. We’ve rounded up a list of the top cruise lines that cater to WFPB eaters as well as mealtime tips for smooth sailing on any ship.

Cruises That Cater to Vegan and Plant-Based Diets

vegan-cruise-dinner

Windstar Cruises

Big news over at Windstar : In partnership with the National Health Association, this line of boutique cruise ships is launching luxury whole-food, plant-based menus aboard all their vessels starting in June 2023. Windstar sails small groups of passengers (less than 350 people per trip) through the most beautiful water passages in the world, including the Caribbean, European rivers, and the coasts of Alaska. The menus feature dishes with no added salt, oil, or sugar, and they’re also gluten-free to accommodate as many guests as possible. Think veggie enchiladas with black bean and cilantro sauce, roasted butternut squash velouté with baked pumpkin seeds, and tahini brownies with fresh strawberries. If you want to travel with other WFPB eaters, the NHA also organizes plant-based group cruises so you can bond with like-minded travelers, embark on incredible on-shore excursions, and experience life at sea like never before.

Holistic Holiday at Sea

The 100% plant-based Holistic Holiday at Sea , offered by MSC Cruises, is a seven-day retreat for those looking for delicious food, fun, fitness, and vegan inspiration and insight. HHS offers ample opportunity to rub shoulders and attend presentations from some of the biggest names in the plant-based lifestyle community, including physicians, nutritionists, chefs, and athletes. But there’s also plenty of downtime to relax and enjoy island life, whether that means shopping in Nassau, bicycling and kayaking in St. Maarten, or snorkeling Antigua's Deep Bay. Meals are prepared from scratch using whole foods, maple and rice syrups replace white sugar and artificial sweeteners, and oil-free and gluten-free options are offered. Menu highlights include sweet rice and millet porridge topped with hazelnuts and watercress; lentil-walnut pâté with Belgian endive; vegetable paella; and chocolate-orange cake with chocolate-orange sauce.

Vegan Cruise Risotto

VeganTravel

The Germany-based VeganTravel offers fully vegan cruises throughout Europe and has slowly expanded their list of destinations around the world. Upcoming voyages include the Danube river, France and Normandy, and India via the Ganges River. Complete with daily yoga classes and an on-deck spa, these cruises are a luxurious way to indulge in the plant-based lifestyle. Vegan meal offerings include a daily breakfast buffet and fine-dining sit-down dinners in the evenings.

Oceania Cruises

While it isn't a strictly vegan cruise, Oceania offers a total of 250 thoughtfully-created vegan dishes aboard all six of its cruise liners. Developed in collaboration with vegan chef Christophe Berg and inspired by Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and Mexican cuisines, the offerings have been integrated into menus on the ships’ Grand Dining Rooms and Terrace Cafes. Dishes include green apple müesli with pistachios, pecans, and yellow raisins; penne au pistou with broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes; and green papaya kelp noodle salad. For travelers aspiring to a serious spa experience on the high seas, the plant-based menu is a key feature of the luxe Aquamar culinary and wellness spa programs on Oceania ships.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises , a luxury, all-inclusive cruiseline, offers 200-plus vegan dishes across its four-ship fleet serving more than 450 ports of call. The selections—also developed by vegan chef Christophe Berg—are fully integrated into daily menus. Highlights include chickpea pancakes, chia-cashew yogurt breakfast bowls, falafel fritters, plant-based power and poke bowls, and basil-scented fruit minestrone. Regent Seven Seas tours include excursions to Tasmania, the Arctic, the Mediterranean, Bali, and Cape Horn, among other stunning destinations.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

Windjammer Cafe, a buffet-dining option aboard Royal Caribbean ships, offers plenty of options for plant-based guests. In addition, the Main Dining Room features a nightly vegan menu that provides WFPB guests with several scrumptious options for starters, entrees, and desserts . Highlights include edamame-stuffed portobello mushrooms, vegan spaghetti Bolognese, and toffee "cheesecake" with dark chocolate and a peanut-butter crust. Royal Caribbean Cruise destinations include Bermuda, the Bahamas, Mexico, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Belize, and Cozumel.

Princess Cruises

Fusing gourmet cuisine with eco-conscious ethics, Princess Cruises is now offering an expansive vegan menu across their fleet of 15 ships. And while it can often be slim pickings for plant-based travelers, Princess Cruises has cooked up extensice offerings to satisfy every palate. From soups and starters to pastas and main dishes, you can expect to have just as much choice as the omnivorous guests. A few options include Baja-style cauliflower tacos, green goddess salad with tofu and endive, fettuccine with walnut sauce, and plant-based shepherd's pie. Set sail and take your taste buds on the trip of a lifetime!

SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream Yacht Club makes a point to pamper discerning and health-conscious travelers with gourmet vegan food that rivals Michelin star restaurants. Whether you're set to tour the polar regions, island-hop the Caribbean, or sample wines on a Mediterranean voyage, you can expect to find pumpkin and zucchini lasagna, tofu cakes on sautéed zucchini with mint and basil sauce, and pumpkin-carrot mousse with roasted pumpkin seeds as standard fare. A DIY salad area for lunch and a cold-pressed raw and vegan juice smoothie bar offers refreshing beverages.

Costa Cruises

Costa offers special vegetarian and vegan menus upon request and also allows passengers to bring their own food products and have ship chefs prepare meals out of them . The company offers tours of the Caribbean, South America, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean, among other fantastic destinations.

Tips for Eating Whole-Food, Plant-Based on a Cruise

Booked your cruise with another company? No sweat; there are many ways to “work the system,” says Steve Lawenda , a family physician at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clarita, California. Lawenda recently put his whole-food, plant-based diet to the test on a cruise. Here are his best tips for navigating uncharted waters.

Do Your Homework

Check your cruise line’s website for menu options or give them a call, recommends Lawenda. “Consider a Google search for your cruise line and/or specific ship and include the term ‘vegan’ or ‘plant-based.’ There are many useful third-party sites with tips, some sites of which consist of consumer/traveler reviews that also may be helpful.” Lawenda recommends perusing the message boards on CruiseCritic.com .

Don’t be shy, says Lawenda. “Once you board your ship, it’s most helpful to acquaint yourself with the dining room’s head waiter or maître d' and explain your specific dietary needs. I have found they will either recommend items on the menu that are already compatible with your needs, or they will ask their chefs to create custom dishes for you.”

Hit the Buffet

Most cruises boast a large all-you-can-eat buffet. Use this to your advantage; it’s a great place to assemble a tasty meal from the vast array of side dishes and salad fixings. “The challenge was sometimes knowing which dishes were vegan, which had oil and/or refined sugar, or other added sweeteners,” says Lawenda. “In my experience, the head chefs will be more than happy to walk the buffet with you, pointing out existing options that fit your criteria, and in many cases, they will also be happy to make something custom for you.”

Remember: You’re the Customer

Cruises want you to enjoy yourself, write rave reviews, and recommend your experience to your friends, says Lawenda. “This typically means they will do whatever they can to not only accommodate your dietary requests [but also] make your food as delicious as possible. There seems to be a decent amount of competition in the cruise industry these days, and customer satisfaction, especially when it comes to the dining and culinary experience, is a top priority.”

Vegan Cruise: A Comprehensive Guide for the Plant-Based Seafarer

Imagine gliding across the ocean, soaking in the beauty of the sea, and savoring delicious, gourmet vegan dishes. Sounds like a dream, right?

Welcome to the captivating world of vegan cruising. A world where you can feast on culinary delights without compromising your vegan lifestyle. Ready to sail into the sunset while maintaining your plant-based diet? Stick around as we set sail into the exploration of vegan-friendly cruise lines.

vegan cruise

In recent years, the cruise industry has seen a significant surge in vegan-friendly options on board their ships. This shift can be attributed to a combination of factors such as a growing global trend towards plant-based diets, heightened awareness of animal welfare issues, and an increasing number of health-conscious travelers.

Gone are the days when vegans were limited to basic salads and fruit platters. Cruise lines are now recognizing the need to cater to vegan passengers by introducing creative and diverse plant-based menus. From luxury cruise lines like Oceania and Viking Cruises , which offer a wide range of vegan dishes in their dining venues, to mainstream operators like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, which ensure that vegan options are available at each meal, the industry is steadily adapting to meet this demand.

The introduction of special vegan menus, vegan cooking classes, and even completely vegan cruises are among the developments seen in recent years. Cruise lines are not only offering vegan alternatives but are going above and beyond to ensure these options are as varied, flavorful, and satisfying as their non-vegan counterparts.

This change has resulted in a win-win situation, with cruise lines attracting a wider range of passengers and vegan travelers being able to enjoy the convenience and luxury of a cruise without compromising their dietary principles. The trend towards more vegan-friendly options in the cruise industry looks set to continue, with more lines likely to increase their plant-based offerings in the future.

Choosing a Vegan-Friendly Cruise Line

When planning a cruise as a vegan, the choice of the cruise line can make a significant difference in your overall experience. Here we’ll delve into the offerings of various cruise lines, exploring their vegan options, special features, and even some personal experiences and testimonials to guide you in your choice.

  • Oceania Cruises : Known for their culinary excellence, Oceania Cruises launched a comprehensive vegan menu in 2019 with more than 200 dishes. These options span their entire dining venues, providing a diverse array of delicious, gourmet, plant-based cuisine. Whether it’s a nutritious breakfast smoothie bowl or a four-course vegan dinner, Oceania has it covered. One passenger raved about their truffle-flavored parsnip soup and praised the staff’s knowledge of vegan food.
  • Viking Cruises : Viking may not have a specific vegan menu, but they have a strong reputation for accommodating various dietary preferences. Their vegetarian menu boasts several vegan dishes, and the chefs are more than willing to adapt other dishes. A past guest recalled a delightful experience where the chef prepared a special vegan dessert just for her.
  • Holland America Line : While Holland America may not have a designated vegan menu, they provide an assortment of plant-based options throughout their dining venues. The line is known for its high-quality cuisine, and their staff is generally very willing to tailor dishes to meet your needs. One vegan traveler spoke highly of their vegan sushi and the crew’s eagerness to ensure she had a wide variety of foods to choose from.
  • Royal Caribbean : With vegan options available at each meal, Royal Caribbean makes an effort to cater to their vegan guests. Their chefs are usually able to adjust dishes to suit dietary needs. An enthusiastic review from a recent vegan cruiser praised the line’s vast array of fruit and vegetable options and loved the specially-prepared vegan meals in the main dining room.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line : Norwegian Cruise Line offers separate menus for different dietary preferences, including vegetarian and vegan options. Testimonials speak highly of the cruise line’s ability to cater to different dietary needs, with one vegan passenger recounting their enjoyable dining experience with the extensive range of plant-based meals offered.
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises : This cruise line offers an assortment of gourmet vegan options throughout their dining venues. They’re known for their commitment to meet various dietary needs. One guest praised their vegan meals as some of the most delicious and creative they’d ever had.

Remember, while these cruise lines are leading the way in vegan-friendly options, it’s still crucial to inform them of your dietary needs before booking and once onboard. It’s also a good idea to check the most recent reviews and experiences from other vegan travelers, as offerings can change.

Doing Your Research of Vegan Cruises

Before setting sail on your cruise adventure, it’s crucial to invest some time in research. The importance of researching vegan options before booking cannot be overstated – it ensures a smoother, more enjoyable voyage where your dietary needs are met with ease.

Importance of Researching Vegan Options Before Booking

The world of cruising has evolved significantly, with many cruise lines now catering to a variety of dietary preferences and restrictions. However, not all cruise lines are created equal when it comes to vegan options. Some lines have extensive plant-based menus, while others might only offer basic vegan dishes. By doing your research beforehand, you can identify which cruise lines align best with your dietary needs and expectations.

Contacting the Cruise Line or Travel Agent for Specific Information

Once you have a shortlist of potential cruise lines, reach out to them directly or speak with your travel agent to ask specific questions about their vegan offerings. Inquire about their plant-based menus, whether chefs can customize dishes, and if they provide vegan options across all dining venues, including main dining rooms, specialty restaurants, and room service. These inquiries can help ensure you’re choosing a cruise line that will provide a satisfying culinary experience throughout your voyage .

Checking for Recent Updates or Changes in Menus

Cruise lines often update their menus and dining options to keep up with culinary trends and passenger feedback. So, before making a final decision, check their official websites or reach out to the cruise lines to get the most current information. Reviewing the latest updates and changes in menus can provide a clear picture of the current vegan dining scene on the ship.

Additionally, consider looking at online forums, blogs, and social media for recent reviews from other vegan cruisers. Their experiences can offer valuable insights into the quality, variety, and presentation of vegan dishes onboard different cruise lines.

Your voyage should be a stress-free experience where you can enjoy delicious meals without worrying about dietary restrictions. Therefore, doing comprehensive research before booking is essential to ensure your cruise is a delectable adventure on the high seas.

Booking Your Vegan Cruise

Once you have completed your research and chosen a cruise line that meets your vegan dietary needs, the next step is to book your cruise. This process involves communicating your dietary restrictions to the cruise line and confirming that your needs can be met onboard. Here’s how to go about it:

Informing the Cruise Line of Your Dietary Restrictions at the Time of Booking

As you’re making your booking, it’s crucial to inform the cruise line about your vegan dietary requirements. This can typically be done online when booking your cruise, or you can call the cruise line’s customer service directly. This step ensures your needs are communicated clearly and are known from the start.

Some cruise lines have a section in their online booking system where you can specify dietary requirements. If this option is not available, reach out via phone or email to relay your needs. Be as specific as possible about your diet – state clearly that you are vegan and avoid all animal-derived products.

Confirming That Your Dietary Needs Can Be Met Onboard

Once you’ve informed the cruise line of your dietary restrictions, the next step is to confirm that they can indeed meet your needs onboard. While most modern cruise lines are equipped to handle a variety of diets, it’s always wise to double-check.

Reaching out to the cruise line or your travel agent a week or two before your departure date is a good idea. Confirm that your dietary restrictions have been noted and ask any additional questions you might have about the vegan options available. For example, you may want to find out if there will be vegan options at every meal and in every dining venue, or if there will be vegan snacks available throughout the day.

Remember, your comfort and enjoyment of the cruise depend on your needs being met. By informing the cruise line about your dietary restrictions at the time of booking and confirming that they can accommodate you, you’re setting the stage for a carefree, delicious journey.

Onboard: Navigating Dining Options

Stepping aboard a cruise ship can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially when it comes to navigating the vast array of dining options. Here’s a guide to help vegan travelers make the most of their culinary experiences onboard:

Tips for Communicating with Dining Staff

Effective communication with the dining staff can significantly enhance your cruise experience. On the first day of your cruise, make a point of meeting the maitre d’hotel or dining room manager to discuss your vegan requirements. Dining staff are typically trained to accommodate dietary needs, and they’ll relay this information to the chefs.

When ordering your meals, don’t hesitate to ask questions about the dishes. The more the staff understands your needs, the better they can serve you. If language is a barrier, consider bringing a dietary needs card in multiple languages, clearly stating that you’re vegan and the kinds of foods you avoid.

Overview of Typical Onboard Dining Venues and Their Vegan Options

Cruise ships offer a variety of dining venues, each providing unique culinary experiences. Let’s navigate through them:

  • Main Dining Room: This is where you’ll likely have most of your meals. While the majority of dishes are typically omnivorous, many cruise lines include vegetarian and vegan options in their menus. If a vegan option isn’t explicitly listed, the chef can often prepare a vegan dish upon request.
  • Specialty Restaurants: These venues often focus on a specific type of cuisine, like Italian or Asian. Vegan options might vary, so it’s good to inquire ahead of time.
  • Buffets: Buffets usually offer a wide array of fruits, salads, vegetables, grains, and sometimes even dedicated vegan sections. However, watch out for cross-contamination and don’t hesitate to ask staff about the ingredients.
  • Room Service: Many cruise lines offer room service menus that cater to various dietary restrictions. It’s worthwhile checking if vegan options are available.

Insights on Requesting Custom Vegan Dishes

If the menu doesn’t have a vegan option, or if you want something a bit different, don’t hesitate to request a custom vegan dish. Chefs onboard are often quite accommodating and can whip up a meal that suits your taste. This might be easier in the main dining room or specialty restaurants, where chefs typically have more flexibility with ingredients and preparation methods.

Don’t forget, it’s always best to make your request well in advance, ideally at the start of the day or even the day before. This gives the kitchen staff time to plan and prepare your meal.

Navigating the dining options as a vegan on a cruise can seem daunting, but with effective communication, knowledge about the available venues, and a bit of planning, you can enjoy a wide variety of delicious vegan meals throughout your journey.

Vegan Options on Shore Excursions

When your cruise ship docks at various ports, it’s time to explore new sights, sounds, and flavors. Navigating vegan dining options during shore excursions can be a new adventure. Here are some tips and resources to help you discover vegan options during your shore excursions .

Tips for Finding Vegan Options During Shore Excursions

  • Research Ahead : Before leaving the ship, do some research on the port city you’re visiting. Look for vegan-friendly restaurants, health food stores, and markets where you could find fresh fruits and vegetables. This research not only saves you time but also ensures you know where to head once you disembark.
  • Carry Snacks : Regardless of your research, there might be times when vegan options are scarce or if a restaurant is unexpectedly closed. In such situations, having some vegan snacks on hand can be a lifesaver. Pack some trail mix, granola bars, or fruit for quick and easy nourishment.
  • Communicate : If you’re dining out, communicate your dietary needs clearly to the restaurant staff. Some local cuisines might have vegan dishes or ones that can be easily adjusted to suit a vegan diet.
  • Join a Vegan Tour : Some ports of call might offer vegan food tours, where a local guide takes you to the best vegan-friendly restaurants, cafes, and stores in the city. This can be a great way to sample a variety of local vegan foods without the hassle of researching and planning.

Recommendations for Apps or Resources to Find Vegan Restaurants in Various Ports of Call

In the digital age, there are numerous apps and online resources that make finding vegan options in a foreign city easier than ever. Here are a few recommendations:

  • HappyCow : This is a comprehensive resource for finding vegan and vegetarian restaurants worldwide. The app features user reviews and allows you to filter options based on location and dietary preferences.
  • Vegan Maps : This app specifically focuses on vegan dining options and can help you locate vegan restaurants or food stores near you.
  • TripAdvisor : While not specifically vegan, this popular travel app allows you to filter restaurant searches for ‘vegan options,’ making it a useful resource.
  • Local Vegan Blogs : Don’t overlook local vegan blogs or food bloggers from the cities you’re visiting. They often provide updated information about the best vegan spots in town.

Exploring vegan options during shore excursions is part of the fun of your cruise journey. With a little planning and some helpful digital resources, you can enjoy a variety of delicious, plant-based meals wherever you dock.

The Joy of Cruising as a Vegan

As our journey draws to a close, it’s clear that cruising as a vegan is not just feasible but also increasingly enjoyable. With an array of vegan-friendly options springing up onboard cruise lines and in ports worldwide, the horizon has never looked more promising for vegan cruisers.

Encouragement about the Increasing Ease of Vegan Cruising

Veganism is on the rise, and the travel industry, including the cruise sector, is catching up. More cruise lines are recognizing the need to cater to a broader range of dietary requirements, with vegan options becoming more widespread. Today, it’s not uncommon to find specially curated vegan menus, custom meal options, and even cooking classes onboard.

Furthermore, the global rise of veganism means more restaurants and food outlets in ports of call are offering vegan options, making your shore excursions a delight.

In short, the world of vegan cruising has evolved drastically, ensuring a delicious journey across the seas. So, whether you’re a seasoned vegan traveler or embarking on your first vegan cruise adventure, you can set sail with confidence, knowing that your dietary preferences are acknowledged and catered to.

Closing Thoughts and Advice

Cruising as a vegan undoubtedly requires a bit of planning, but the rewards are plentiful. From exploring diverse vegan dishes onboard to sampling local vegan cuisine in various ports, the experiences are worth the preparation.

Remember, clear communication is key—inform the cruise line of your dietary needs as early as possible and reiterate them to the dining staff onboard. Don’t shy away from asking questions or requesting custom vegan dishes. After all, this is your vacation, and you should be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

As the cruise industry continues to embrace veganism, your options will only increase. So, set your worries aside and look forward to the delight of exploring the high seas and indulging in culinary adventures while adhering to a vegan lifestyle.

  • Eating Vegan on a Cruise Ship (or Any Special Diet)

Eating as a vegan on a cruise ship is a breeze! I’ve followed a vegan diet for many years and I’m always able to find plant-based meals when I travel. I’ve sailed with several different cruise lines, both ocean liners and river cruises (Princess Cruises, Carnival, MSC, Royal Caribbean, European Waterways, Holland America Line) and I’ve always managed to find delicious vegan meals.

Even though many cruise ships don’t have vegan restaurants or vegan menus on board, it’s still very easy to dine as a vegan on a cruise ship. From exclusive luxury barge sailings to giant ocean cruisers, I’m going to show you how to eat vegan on a cruise.

Vegan on Cruise Ship: Before You Leave

You might not have to worry about this if you’re going on a 100% all vegan cruise , but it’s best to give the cruise line a heads up about your diet in advance. Whether you follow a vegan diet, a gluten-free diet, a low sugar diet, or if you have any allergies or food restrictions, letting the cruise staff know ahead of time will assure the best food experience.

Sailing in Norway with Holland America

It’s very important to fill out the appropriate forms online before you leave for your trip. If your cruise line doesn’t have any paperwork regarding food choices, send an email to their customer care staff with your booking number. Explain your situation. Arranging vegan food on a cruise ship is an easy process. While you can certainly sail as a vegan without letting anyone know in advance, they might decide to keep some extra tofu, eggless pasta, and soy milk on hand if they know that some vegans will be on board.

In our experiences, we get in touch with someone at customer service, and they’ll always reach out in advance. We usually receive some sort of confirmation that our request has been received. If for some reason you are unable to do this, I’m sure that if you speak to the Head Waiter of our dining room that they will still be able to accommodate your needs as best as they can.

Eating Vegan on a Cruise: When You Arrive

norwegian cruise line vegan food

When you initially embark on a cruise, you’ll usually dine at the buffet for lunch. I’ve always found tons of options at cruise buffets for vegetarians and vegans. It’s actually getting a lot easier as time goes on. On our last cruise with Holland America Line, their “buffet” is actually many different stations where everything is prepared individually for you.

In the case of salads, sushi, a stir fry, pasta dishes, and so much more, it’s easy to customize them to be plant-based. If you have any questions, you can always ask a staff member if it’s vegan.

In the evening, you’ll likely have dinner at the main dining room, whether you choose a traditional dining time or “anytime dining”. We always opt for anytime dining because we love the flexibility of choosing the meal time of our choice each night. Once you arrive, speak to the Head Waiter and inform him or her of your dietary request.

On the first evening, they’ll customize anything from the regular menu and make it vegan. There are usually a few vegetarian choices that they can make vegan. If you’re fortunate enough to dine on a ship that has a plant-based menu, they’ll bring out the vegan menu and you can choose what you like.

Towards the end of your meal, the wait staff will bring out the next evening’s menu. You can order your meal in advance with the kitchen and make any alterations that you’d like. Even if you don’t see something that you fancy on the menu, you can usually make a special request, like a tofu stir fry or Indian food. It’s never a problem.

If there’s a vegan menu, they might ask that you still request your meal ahead of time. The kitchen staff strive to prepare food at a rapid pace for thousands of passengers, and it’s very helpful to know any special meals in advance.

Coffee and Cafes on Cruise Ships

Cruise ship cafes - Grand Dutch Cafe on HAL

For all of the coffee and tea lovers out there, you’ll be able to get your fix at the cruise ship’s coffee shop. Typically, each cruise will have at least one cafe or coffee shop on board. You should always be able to find soy milk or almond milk for your coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and more.

Cruise ship coffee shops

I find that cruise ships generally lack vegan treats and desserts. At the coffee shops, there are generally an assortment of baked goods, and rarely will you find one that’s vegan-friendly. Eating vegan on a cruise ship would be far more enjoyable if we had more sweet treats. In the dining room, you’ll likely be served a sorbet or bowl of fruit unless the cruise line has a specific vegan menu.

Vegan Cruises

There are a few vegan cruises that you can take nowadays, if you prefer an entirely plant-based holiday. We’ve taken the Holistic Holiday at Sea vegan cruise . This one happens annually, and it generally sails in the Caribbean. The food is completely vegan and there are lots of special events with yummy treats. There are also many talks by proclaimed doctors and experts in the vegan community. Eating vegan on a cruise ship has never been easier when everything is plant-based!

There’s also a company that has entirely vegan river cruises , and they’ve even expanded beyond Europe. Vegan Culinary Cruises is a new luxury vegan cruising experience with a company that’s planned high end culinary sailings for over 30 years.

How to Eat Vegan on a Cruise: Our Experiences

We’ve sailed on several different cruises as a vegan, and I’d love to show you a sample of everything that we ate. Our favourite cruise line for vegan food is a tie between Holland America Line and Royal Caribbean, although I’m a massive fan of Princess Cruises, too.

Of course, I have to mention the luxury barge cruises that we’ve taken with European Waterways. The chef on board specifically prepared vegan meals every day just for me, and they were divine.

Vegan on Princess Cruises

Pad Thai made vegan - Eating vegan on a cruise ship

Out of every cruise line, I’ve sailed with Princess Cruises the most over the years. I’ve always been such a fan of their itineraries, their customer service, and the ships themselves. I even sailed on the Ruby Princess for an old co-workers wedding! I’ve also covered my sailings on the Caribbean Princess and the Emerald Princess on this blog.

Vegan buffet foods on Princess Cruises - Eating vegan on a cruise ship

While Princess Cruises offered some of the best vegan food a long time ago, I find that they’re lagging a bit behind when it comes to plant-based menus. You will have absolutely no problem requesting vegan meals, and they’ll be really yummy.

I would love to see a vegan menu on Princess ships. It seems like most cruise lines have a vegan menu now. Hopefully, Princess will catch up and start offering one, too.

Vegan on Holland America Line

Holland America Vegan Menu - Tofu stir fry - Eating vegan on a cruise ship

Justin and I were really impressed with the vegan meals on Holland America Line. We sailed to Norway on Nieuw Statendam . HAL has its own menu for special diets containing mostly vegan food, some gluten-free offerings, and some vegetarian food. If you’re sailing for a week with HAL, you can eat something different every night from that menu alone. It’s also possible to request vegan meals at some of the specialty restaurants or from the standard dining room menu.

Holland America vegan menu - Tempeh and vegetable kabobs - Eating vegan on a cruise ship

You can check out our Holland America Line vegan cruise guide . It lists all of our meals and everywhere we dined on board, from quick serve options to specialty restaurants.

Vegan on MSC

Vegan Cruise of the Caribbean: The Best Vegan Vacation

Eating vegan on a cruise ship has never been easier when you’ve booked a vegan sailing! When we cruised aboard the MSC Divina, Justin and I were taking the Holistic Holiday at Sea vegan cruise . While about half of the passengers were taking the plant-based sailing, there were another half that had booked a typical cruise vacation. We stuck to eating the specially prepared vegan food for most of the time. But, there were also a number of vegan options at the regular buffet on board.

Vegan Cruise of the Caribbean: The Best Vegan Vacation

In addition, MSC Divina has an incredible pizzeria. You can order a freshly made marinara pizza until late at night. We ended up at this pizzeria almost every night because it was so good. You can add vegetables to the pizza, too. We also enjoyed pizza by the slice at the buffet, and they started serving some slices with vegan cheese (only available during the vegan cruise).

Vegan on Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean vegan food

Royal Caribbean introduced a vegan menu in their main dining room a few years ago, and now those vegan meals are a mainstay on their regular menu. You can always find a vegan starter, main course and dessert on every main dining room dinner menu.

Royal Caribbean as a vegan

The buffets, the Windjammer and Solarium Bistro, both offered excellent vegan options. Though nothing in the buffet is labeled as vegan (there is a vegetarian section at the Windjammer), it’s easy to figure out which dishes are vegan. Plus, you can always ask if you are unsure.

Royal Caribbean as a vegan

Out of all the cruise ships, it was easiest to dine on Royal Caribbean as a vegan, with Holland America Line coming in at a close second. Read more about the vegan food I ate on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas.

Vegan on European Waterways

Vegan meals on the Athos du Midi luxury hotel barge in the South of France

When you’re sailing on a luxury barge with European Waterways, there’s likely only a handful of passengers on your small boat. When I sailed on the Athos Barge , there were only seven passengers in total. Knowing that I followed a vegan diet, the chef on the barge was able to prepare all vegan meals just for me. He even came up with vegan desserts every night, too!

Vegan dishes prepared by Chef Lee on the Athos du Midi

Taking a barge cruise on the Canal du Midi in France was such a memorable and special experience. Even though the chef claimed to not have much knowledge of vegan cuisine, he prepared some very yummy meals throughout my weeklong holiday. You can see all of the meals that I ate by reading my full review of Athos .

Last year, we took another barge cruise aboard La Bella Vita, cruising between Venice and Mantua in Italy. The chef totally outdid himself, even making his own vegan cheese from scratch. It was probably the best vegan food I’ve ever had on a ship, even though this was an intimate barge cruising experience. You can read more about our La Bella Vita sailing with European Waterways .

I just got off of the NCL Escape (Dec. 2023) and felt very accommodated, as a vegan. The standard, complentary dining rooms had a nightly dedicated vegan menu. I only used this menu on the last night (we ate at many specialty upcharge restaurants) and saw that the top of the menu said vegan #7. I was told that each evening, there is a different menu offered. I was told that I should give each restaurant 24 hours notice to have a vegan option prepared. I enjoyed the offerings at the full service restaurants. My favorite was surprisingly the Brazilian Steakhouse Moderno (I believe that that is the name). They had an extensive salad bar with many vegan options and the chef prepared a vegan entree for me. Separately the buffet always had plenty of vegetarian option that are indicated with a green swipe (next to the title of the dish). You can further clarify with the kind staff if you have concerns that the dish may be vegetarian but not vegan. There were many Indian and Medeteranian influenced options with a green swipe on the buffet. There were plenty of fresh vegetables and beans on the salad bar. The fruit was always ripe and tasty. Sorbet is also usually an option at the buffet. None of the baked goods nor the soups at the buffet ever had a green swipe, however I did find these types of selections in the complentary evening dining rooms. Almond milk was always available for my morning coffee in the dining room. Overall I felt very pleased and accomdated by NCL.

Thank you so much for sharing, Jacqueline! I really appreciate it. We've yet to sail with NCL but would love to try it! This info is really helpful to our readers so thanks again!

i am a a recent transfer into veganism and i am going on the cruise “Princess Ruby” to alaska and i am very nervous about being able to get the right nutrition on this cruise. any tips you have that would be helpful for traveling? and if i contacted the cruise line just like you did do you think i would be able to do the same dietary request even though it’s a different ship? i need all the help i can get lol

Monday 11th of March 2019

Elizabeth, don't worry at all! I've sailed on a bunch of Princess ships, including the Ruby last year to California. Just talk to the staff when you arrive like I suggested, and mention it on the first dinner, and you'll be good to go! I'm always so impressed with the cruise staff when helping someone following a special diet. Have fun!

Wednesday 28th of November 2018

The answer is defiantly NO !!! We just got back from a 28 night cruise on the Emerald Princess that was like being in prison. At first I thought the plumbing was OK but that too went down hill. In short the food, and not just for us but many said it was the worst, to the TP was just terrible !!! The wate staff, who were very attentive were embarrass by the poor food quality. If there was a Capt. on board you wouldn't know it by ever seeing him. On good cruises we have been on, we saw the Capt. daily inspecting every thing he is responsible for, the whole ship and every one on board. Though we are elite static on Princess, they will never see my face again. They even caused cancelations of ppls excursions because of road closures on Maui known years in advance. During the voyage many staff members lied to us but the mate die was the worst.

Thursday 29th of November 2018

Ron, Sorry to hear you had a bad cruise! I think you need to take your grievances up with customer service and not in the comments of my blog. I'm not affiliated with Princess in any way. Thanks!

Monday 8th of October 2018

Just contacted princess cruises and was told they did not cater for vegans gutted as I have booked for February. Asked what vegan wines they had not helpful said did not have any shocking. Went previously on P&O cruise they were amazing over and beyond choices and sweets galore and vegan spread

Tuesday 9th of October 2018

They 100% cater to vegans! I've sailed on numerous sailings with Princess as a vegan, no problem. As for wines, you'll have to track down a Princess wine menu ahead of time if possible and do a little research on Barnivore.com.

I've seen recent photos from the Crown Princess with buffet items labeled vegan, so it also depends on the ship. You'll have no problem having vegan food prepared for you though. Perhaps the person on the phone wasn't familiar.

Tuesday 3rd of April 2018

Glad to hear that Princess had good vegan options. I’m vegan and sailed on Royal Caribbean in 2016 and the food was awful. They attempted to offer vegan options in the dining room, but the food was neither fresh or inventive. Lots of stir frys, but the sauces were very salty and tasted like bottled sweet & sour. And the desserts were terrible (sugar free, gluten free, dairy free “cake”). We’ll have to try Princess for our next one!

Norwegian Jade NCL Vegan and Plant Based Food

Norwegian Jade NCL Vegan and Plant Based Food

Over the last couple of years, we have seen a big change, with the demand for plant based and vegan foods increasing. Having been used to a menu offering one vegan option, we are now delighted to see two or three choices in many more restaurants abroad. What was once seen as a trend is beginning to feel more mainstream, with vegan only restaurants and businesses opening and offering food to satisfy even the carnivores in the group. Because of this many companies such as NCL are having to adapt their food and drink options, but what exactly do they have to offer?

Vegan Food on Cruise Ships

We must admit we’re not cruising experts although we have done four or five short ones prior to this cruise, and each time food has been a struggle. The set evening meals were much easier than the daytime buffet options. Most of the time we lived off salad, because everything else was laced with meat, fish, or dairy. There was no information on the food labels indicating what was in each dish and basics like vegetables were cooked in butter.

Even a sandwich was a no go because the bread had milk in it and most of the snack options were meat based. Life revolved around salads in the day, snacking on fries and then most nights the meal was a curry. Now we love a good curry, but to have that every night for a week was a little much.

Thankfully as we went on more cruises our knowledge grew, and we knew to take wraps with us to make lunches a little more exciting. Also sauces such as siracha, BBQ and a salad dressing, to add flavour to dishes. Even having a few nibbles like vegan chocolate and biscuits for those times when you just want to have something a little naughty as a treat, because it is a holiday after all.

Cruise line knowledge of dietary requirements has also improved slightly, we’ve seen a notable increase Carnival vegan menu options on our latest cruises.

Norwegian Jade Vegan and Plant Based Food Options

We booked the Norwegian Jade NCL within two weeks of us arriving on the ship, so it was all a little last minute with very little research. If you look online there isn’t a lot of information about vegan and plant based on the cruise, but you can find plenty about vegetarianism.

Norwegian Jade NCL Vegan Burrito

The Norwegian Jade NCL route started at the port of Piraeus in Athens and went to Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion, Olympia/Katakolon and Santorini. It is the ideal option for those of you who like to get off the ship and wander, without paying for the excursions. But if you prefer to book in something specific, then there were plenty of options to choose from, whether it was discovering musical culture in Rhodes or wine tasting in Santorini.

Back to the food, we have to admit we were floored by the number of options available to us and the assistance given by the staff onboard. We became known as the ‘Vegan Couple’ and in all honesty we didn’t mind, in fact we wore the badge proudly.

We’ll work through the day and give you an idea of what was on offer, but this will change most days and possibly it will adapt over time. The more people ask for vegan food, then companies will be open to increase the options available.

This is a list of the restaurants available on the ship, and as you can imagine we didn’t get to visit them all.

  • Moderno Churrascaria – Brazilian food
  • Cagney’s Steakhouse
  • Garden Café – Buffet Restaurant
  • The Great Outdoors – Buffet Restaurant
  • La Cucina – Italian Restaurant
  • Topsiders Bar and Grill – Pool Side Snacks
  • Jasmine Garden – Asian Resturant
  • Atrium Café – Cakes and Pastries
  • Alizar – Main Dining Restaurant
  • Grand Pacific – Main Dining Restaurant
  • Le Bistro – French Cuisine
  • O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill

vegan breakfast Norwegian Jade NCL

In general, there wasn’t loads for us at breakfast, but it completely depends on the kind of things you like. If you’re a fruit fan then you will love it, but sadly we’re not big fruit eaters. Also there were cereals and soy milk available upon request.

Again, most of the time we went back to the Garden Café/the Great Outdoors. This is when things got tasty, and our plates were ridiculously full.

Norwegian Jade Garden Cafe Plant Based Lunch

If you’re looking for something warmer than a salad, then don’t worry because NCL have you covered. Every day after we finished our salad, we were greeted by one of the chefs, who would walk around, and show us which dishes were vegan. This happened because on the first day we specifically asked if one of the curries had milk in it. The chef went to check and each day after that he had a list of everything that we could eat. Sadly, none of the labels provide any of this information, they literally just tell you what the dish is i.e., five bean chilli. But having someone point out everything available to us meant we could walk around and choose what we wanted to have, which was such a treat. Most days we had steamed vegetables, different flavoured curries, tomato sauce-based options, poppadom’s and even sandwiches made with pretzel rolls. If you’re a curry lover, then you are in for a treat!

Because we’re huge fans of vegetables we were delighted to see so much available, even okra. All of the veggies were well cooked but not mushy, which was perfect for us.

The chef on occasion pointed out the soup (there were normally two options), but again just ask and make sure in case they use fish or animal stock.

Norwegian Jade Plant Based Bang Bang Tofu

That night we were given the menu and told what could be converted into vegan. We had a couple of options on both starters and mains, but for dessert it was always a fruit plate.

There are specific bread rolls you can have which are vegan, if you ask the server to check, but we had white crusty ones. Obviously, you wouldn’t use the butter on the table, but a member of staff can get some olive oil and balsamic for you. We tended to just eat the bread and we really enjoyed it.

For starters we had a few options through the week, including spring rolls, minestrone soup and we loved the bruschetta topped with tomato.

Mains again changed most days which added to the enjoyment. We had a beautifully pesto pasta, spicy stir-fry’s, crispy tofu and veggies, and even bean burritos.  Every meal tasted incredible, and we left the restaurant so full we chose not to bother with dessert which again was simply a fruit plate. Admittedly we’re not big fruit fans, so after the first night we were more than happy to leave it at starters and main.

During the meal a waitress would come over to us with the menu for the following day and we’d decide on what we wanted. It gave the chefs time to prepare it for us and we were excited for the meal the next day.

Regarding wine and drinks you would need to ask the staff to look at the labels, but if you have roaming data available on your phone then check on Barnivore . This is a site that lists which alcoholic drinks are vegan, including beers, wines, and spirits.

Snacks and Evening Nibbles

NCL Dinner Pesto Pasta

Speciality Restaurants

The likelihood is you’re not going to head to the Brazilian and French restaurant, or even the steakhouse; we didn’t even attempt it. But we did enjoy a meal at the teppanyaki, which can be adapted to suit your preferences, because it is predominantly vegetables anyway.

We didn’t go to the Italian restaurant or Jasmine Garden, but we have been told that dishes can be modified to vegan if you tell them when booking. That we could see there were no options for Vegans at the sushi bar and we couldn’t find any cakes or desserts apart from fruit to suit our diet.

At Topsiders Bar and Grill which is on the pool deck, you only really had items such as fries and salads. In general, it was a burger bar and sadly no one is offering the Beyond Burger quite yet; fingers crossed for the future.

So What Did We Think?

Overall, we found that the staff and chefs had a good idea of what vegan and plant based is. We have been to restaurants before and offered fish and butter, but everyone on the ship was pretty clued up, which made life a million times easier.

Fruit Plate - Dessert Option NCL

Because there was so much on offer, we hardly ate any of the snacks we brought, but again if you’re like us and you love to eat then take some of your favourites with you.

You will find that every day brings a new menu and new food options, which can be difficult if you have a restricted diet. Normally that creates fear in us, but we found it quite refreshing during this trip and we’d definitely cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) again.

The key is ensuring you have spoken to the ships dietary specialist when you arrive and getting to know the chefs in the buffet restaurant. If you’ve done that then you’re sorted and can relax and enjoy the many many incredible experiences, you will have on the ship and when you port.

If you have booked your trip, then we hope you have the best time ever. If it’s anything like our experience, then we know you will! If you need any help with planning then head to our guide to Athens.

Vegan/Vegetarian Diet

New here.  😀

I am primarily vegan but willing to be a little flexible on vacation. However, I will not eat anything that is not at least vegetarian.

Does anyone know if I will be okay on the NCL Escape? I do not plan on using the specialty dining. Just the main dining room and any other complimentary dining.

Thank you!

We sailed on Getaway in October last year, and they had a separate veggie/vegan menu you could ask for. They were quite samey, but it was nice to have some different options. Don't know if they're doing this across the fleet, but worth an ask.

They generally have at least one veggie option on the main menu, if not a couple. However, if you're struggling, you can always ask at dinner to see the menus for the next day to see if there is anything suitable. If there isn't, you can make a pre-order via the maitre d, and they will either adapt something to make it vegan or veggie, or you can ask for something else entirely.

The buffet always has veggie options, especially the section that has curries in it.

You should be absolutely fine if you're able to eat veggie rather than vegan, and I suspect with my tips above you'll be able to eat a lot of vegan dishes too.

Like

Not the same ship, but should be similar fleet-wide, here's a recent previous thread (just entered vegan or vegetarian in the helpful search box) with similar discussion

I sailed on the Escape in October, 2023. A friend of mine is vegan and she received wonderful attention from the manager/waitstaff of the Savor restaurant. From what I understand, she spoke with the manager (Julie) at lunch on embarkation day and ate in Savor for almost all of her meals. I was mega-impressed by the consideration she was given and she said the food was excellent.

I believe the buffet always has salad, some vegetarian Indian options, and pasta. As for all the other restaurants, including the MDR, updated sample menus are here for you to plan ahead:  https://profcruise.com/ncl-menus-2024/

I researched this before my recent cruise on the Getaway since my son had shifted to a vegetarian diet

(sometimes pescatarian) since our last cruise on NCL.

Here is some info I found helpful: Check out this blog post from profcruise:

https://profcruise.com/complete-guide-to-eating-vegan-or-vegetarian-on-ncl/

And this CC thread:

Since my son is 10 and a rather picky vegetarian (i.e., will try new things, but doesn’t actually like a lot of complex vegetarian cuisine) we didn’t arrange anything special with the dining staff. However at every single served meal the wait staff begin by asking about food allergies and requirements, and were very open to adapting dishes as much as possible - I pretty much got a yes to every request to hold this, sub that, etc.

We really enjoyed the vegetarian Indian offerings from the buffet. There was also a small section of the lunch & dinner buffet labeled as vegetarian. They offered rotating vegetarian spreads (hummus - very good!, baba ganoush, muhammara, etc). There were also grilled veggie salads with varying dressings, some grain salads - I really enjoyed one with barley and dried cranberries, it didn’t look like much but was really delicious. We also tried a roasted tomato soup that was really tasty. It was on the MDR menu occasionally, but can also be ordered for lunch & dinner from the kids menu. There is also a vegetarian grilled avocado taco on the kids menu. My son liked the soup but not the tacos. But the tacos are already vegan or can easily be adapted as vegan without the cilantro lime sauce (which may already be vegan, I didn’t ask). Adults can order from the kids menu, it is not limited, just featured for kids.

While the fast casual burger offerings do not include a standard veggie burger option, I’m pretty sure you can pre-order one through the dining manager. They’ll also make you one to order at “the grill” section of the buffet - only takes a couple of minutes. It is a veggie & grain patty rather than a faux meat version. I thought it was tasty, my son wasn’t a huge fan. But he’d be happy to “eat vegetarian” by attempting to eat his weight in French fries, so not a reliable arbiter!

We found the veggie burgers to be sufficient for protein, plenty of vegetarian choices in the buffet.  We found slightly better choices on Royal Caribbean, as every dinner has at least one vegan starter, main course and dessert.  But our 20 days on Sky fed us well enough without getting boring.

The original poster of the above-referenced topic is currently on Breakaway. She always does a great job highlighting the yummy options she receives...and what doesn't really jive with her. I'd highly recommend you check it out and follow along:

If you want to see some recent ish menus, I've just written up our cruise on Norwegian Dawn from August last year (see my signature for how to access it). It has photos of all the menus from that cruise.

There wasn't a separate veggie/vegan menu on there, but it will give you an idea of menus in the main dining room, and there are also photos of the speciality restaurants too.

At some point I'll be writing up our Getaway cruise from October, which did have the additional veggie/vegan menus. I am quite behind in write ups though for various reasons, so might be a while!

Best Cruise Lines for Vegan and Vegetarian Cruises

Best Cruises for Vegans

It’s no secret that many cruise lines love carnivores. You just have to look at the menu of various cruise ship restaurants to see what we mean. There’s a plethora of meat-focused restaurants, grills, barbecue places and burger joints onboard. From surf ‘n’ turf at night, to piles of bacon in the morning, meat-lovers certainly won’t lack any choices on any cruise. That, however, does not mean that vegans and vegetarians are completely left out. In fact, there are several vegan and vegetarian cruises you can choose from nowadays.

Cruise Lines Offering Vegan and Vegetarian Options

Basically, all major cruise lines serve vegetarian food in their restaurants, including vegetarian appetizers, starters and entrees. As cuisine has become an integral part of the cruising experience , most menus feature at the very least one vegetarian option, while pasta and pizza places are abundant as well. Vegans can also be accommodated on cruises, but might have to do some more research in advance. And that’s exactly why we’re here to help you!

The following companies are where you can find some of the absolute best vegan and vegetarian cruises .

Vegetarian rice dish - Best Vegan and Vegetarian Cruises

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises is a great example of what vegan and vegetarian cruises should be like. With the much-praised French master chef Jacques Pepin in its ranks, Oceania Cruises could rightly claim to offer the “finest cuisine at sea”. And while there are of course plenty of meat options on their ships’ numerous restaurants, Oceania did launch a brand-new vegan menu in 2017, which consists of no fewer than 250 vegan dishes. On the Marina and Riviera ships, there are morning vegan juice bars next to the pools, while all six of its ships’ Grand Dining Rooms offers vegan and vegetarian options.

Norwegian Cruises

With its huge ships, Norwegian is all about variety and choice—also in terms of food. There are a large number of dining venues, most of which offer vegetarian options on their menu. And even if you’re dining in a place like a steakhouse, the chef can usually accommodate vegetarians simply by bringing in dishes from neighboring restaurants. The main dining rooms, however, always have at least one vegetarian option. Vegans can be catered too as well, but must notify the maître d’ when they get on the ship.

Celebrity Cruises

The main dining room on the Celebrity Cruises ships has a separate vegetarian menu, while other menus clearly show vegetarian dishes (as well as lactose-free meals) with colored symbols. If your server doesn’t offer the vegetarian menu the first time you visit the dining area, you can simply ask for it and they’ll get it for you. Vegans, on the other hand, might have a more difficult time finding a suitable dish in the main dining room, as many of their entrees are centered on pasta and/or cheese

Carnival Cruises

Carnival Cruises  is without question one of the best vegan and vegetarian cruises available right now. Their various onboard eating venues are usually free—as in, included in the cruise price. In the main dining room, you’ll always find a couple of vegetarian starters and entrees. Even the less-obvious restaurants can surprise you with their vegetarian options. The burger joint, for example, serves a great veggie burger and the cantina offers a delicious bean burrito. There’s also plenty of choices at the buffet in terms of pizzas, pastas and salads. Especially vegans can create their own dish easily at that buffet.

Examples of Vegan and Vegetarian Options on Cruises

There’s an extremely wide variety in vegan and especially vegetarian options on cruises. This is just a very limited list, just to give you a sense of what you can expect:

  • Vegetable pad thai
  • Spinach and ricotta ravioli
  • Vegetable cassoulet
  • Italian chocolate vegan-ricotta pie with raspberry sauce
  • Truffle-flavored parsnip soup
  • Cold-pressed raw juice and vegan smoothies
  • Roasted carrot cumin salad

So if you’re wondering how to eat vegan or vegetarian on a cruise, we hope that this post offered some answers. We suggest checking it each individual cruise line, for more detailed information on their menus and food offering. Overall, though, these are the best vegan and vegetarian cruises.

Not the same ship, but should be similar fleet-wide, here's a recent previous thread (just entered vegan or vegetarian in the helpful search box) with similar discussion

You might find more threads by using the search.
