Will use it again.

This is the first time I have used a travel agency and was a little skeptical of how well it would go. Alexandria went over and beyond my expectations! Our Northern Lights trip to Sweden was fantastic. She scheduled private tours, transfers, train and plane tickets, and excursions. Nothing was missed and it was a fantastic trip that we will talk for years to come! Will use it again.

Experience the magical splendour of the Northern Lights amidst our Supertrees

Get to experience the Northern Lights in Singapore with Borealis , a new immersive light and sound installation at Gardens by the Bay’s Supertree Grove!

Created by Switzerland-based artist Dan Acher, Borealis is an outdoor art installation that combines layers of light and cloud particles where the magical splendour of the Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, is recreated to illuminate the night skies of Supertree Grove. Accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack by French composer Guillaume Desbois, variations in wind, humidity and temperature make this installation a fascinating blend of art and technology, an ever-changing experience, where each encounter is unique and where nature holds the final say.

Borealis  has travelled to more than 40 cities across Europe, Australia, Asia and the US, and the experience at Gardens by the Bay will mark its first time in Singapore.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS

For tips on viewing the northern lights, read on. We’ve answered the most commonly asked questions about Nordic aurora borealis tours here to help you make your dream trip a reality.

Alternatively, find out how to make a booking , have a look at our FAQs , or learn about our Book With Confidence travel plan.

1. ARE THE NORDICS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO?

Yes, the Nordics are widely regarded as safe for visitors. Actually, the Nordic nations – Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – continually rank among the top 10 safest places in the world . This is because they have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety.

2. WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon. You can see them illuminating the sky when charged particles from solar flares collide with atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, near the North Pole. This collision creates varied shapes and colours that ripple, flash or glow in the sky.

3. WHAT MONTHS CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS?

You have the best chance of spotting the aurora borealis in the winter months – October to April. To make out the colours of the aurora, you need dark winter nights. In the summer, daylight hours are so long that you’ll find the sky is too bright to see the glowing lights.

As it is a natural occurrence, spotting the northern lights is not guaranteed. But you can increase your chances of witnessing them by visiting the Arctic Circle in winter.

4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

As you need a dark sky to distinguish the aurora, the best time to see the northern lights is at night. The peak hours tend to be between 11 PM and 2 AM, which is why your guided tour will likely depart after 9 PM.

You could also stay at a hotel with an aurora wake-up service. The staff will let you know if the lights come out late in the night, so you don’t have to stay up waiting for them!

The best time of year to see the northern lights is winter, between October and April. This is when Nordic nights are the longest and darkest, which means you have higher chances of catching sight of the aurora.

Winter is a great time to visit the Nordics for other reasons too. Check out these guides to the top winter activities you can enjoy:

Things to do in Norway in winter

Things to do in Iceland in winter

Things to do in Lapland in winter

5. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

You can see the aurora borealis at high northern latitudes, especially around the Arctic Circle, as this is where solar activity is strongest. That’s why the Nordic region is the best place to see the northern lights. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Svalbard all lie within or near the Arctic Circle.

In fact, Iceland and the northern regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland are located within the “aurora zone”. Also known as the “northern lights belt”, this is a latitudinal band between 65-72°N where high auroral frequency and intensity occurs. Visit this zone for the best chance of seeing the aurora.

Learn more about where and when to see the northern lights with these expert guides:

Best times and places to see the northern lights in Europe

Best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland

Best times and places to see the northern lights in Norway

6. WHERE CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS IN SCANDINAVIA?

Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the countries that make up Scandinavia. If you want to go to Scandinavia to hunt for the aurora borealis, your best bet is to visit the northern parts of this region – Swedish Lapland and Northern Norway. It is unlikely you’ll see the aurora in Denmark.

You can witness the northern lights in the neighbouring Nordic nations of Finland and Iceland too. Although these countries aren’t technically part of Scandinavia, they have many similarities and also happen to be great places to catch the aurora borealis!

Lapland – an area covering northern Sweden and Finland – is a fantastic destination for aurora chasing. You could head to Rovaniemi and Kemi in Finnish Lapland, or Abisko National Park near Kiruna in Swedish Lapland.

Or visit Northern Norway for your aurora borealis tour. Take your pick from Norwegian destinations such as Tromsø, Svalbard, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands and Nordkapp (North Cape).

Alternatively, go in search of the aurora borealis in Iceland. With its wide open skies and location near the Arctic Circle, you could see the lights from anywhere in the country. For your best chances though, head away from towns with street lights so you can spot the colours more easily.

In Scandinavia you could seek out the aurora borealis in the countryside or on the coast. Plus, not only can you enjoy northern lights tours, but also bucket list activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and staying in an ice hotel.

7. HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

To see the aurora borealis, you need to be in a northern country on a clear, dark night, away from artificial lights. Although the aurora don’t show up on demand, these top tips will give you the best chances of witnessing them.

Firstly, make sure you visit northern regions close to the Arctic Circle. Iceland, Northern Norway, Svalbard and Lapland are the best destinations to see the northern lights in Europe.

Secondly, time your aurora borealis tour for the European winter. The long, dark nights will help you spot the colours lighting up the sky.

Thirdly, avoid light pollution found in built-up areas. This means heading into the countryside where there is less artificial light compared to towns and cities. You could spend some days out in remote areas, or opt for guided evening tours from your city base instead.

Another thing you can do for northern light viewings is check the weather and aurora forecast . Although you can’t do this very far in advance, during your trip you’ll be able to find out if the evening will be clear of cloud or rain and if solar activity will be strong.

You’d also increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis by taking a guided tour. A local expert would accompany you and take you to all the best spots, sharing their insider knowledge with you.

Read our article on how to see the northern lights for more viewing tips.

8. HOW LONG DO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS LAST?

When the aurora borealis are treating you to their glorious light show, you might find they glow for a few minutes. The lights can show up several times in one night, or last for a couple of hours in one go.

There is no rule as to how long the aurora borealis last, of course, as they are a natural occurrence. If you see them for yourself, no doubt you’ll cherish every second of their beautiful magic.

9. HOW DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA BOREALIS?

The northern lights can be tricky to capture on camera, but with some preparation and the right equipment you can do it. Here are some top tips for photographing the northern lights:

  • Use an SLR camera with manual focus
  • Bring a tripod as you’ll need to do a long exposure shot
  • Get a remote shutter release so you don’t have to touch the camera at all
  • Use a slow shutter speed of between 15 and 30 seconds

For more tips on photographing the aurora, see our northern lights travel guide .

10. WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

It can get rather cold in the Nordic winter, especially if there’s a cool wind. The last thing you want is to feel the chill while you hunt for the aurora borealis at night. That’s why it’s important you pack the right clothing before your trip.

Many northern lights tours will provide you with thermal suits to help you stay warm while you’re out chasing the aurora. It’s also recommended that you wear warm layers underneath.

Here is an essential packing list:

  • Insulated jacket and trousers (windproof and waterproof)
  • Thermal wool underlayers
  • Warm hat, gloves and scarf
  • Warm and sturdy boots

Get more packing advice by reading our experts’ tips and tricks on dressing for northern lights viewing .

11. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can select your chosen arrival date online when reserving your Nordic Visitor tour. For northern lights packages, the arrival dates are between October and April as this is the aurora viewing season.

12. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Absolutely! If you’d like to spend more time in a particular destination, you can request this when booking your tour online. Your dedicated travel consultant will get in touch to confirm the extra days with you.

If you are taking a small group tour, you can add extra nights to the start or end of your trip. This is because the group tour itself is fixed as you will be exploring with fellow visitors on a fixed itinerary.

13. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

You should book your flights once your Nordic Visitor package is confirmed. We recommend you check flights beforehand to find appropriate dates and prices, but only purchase them after your travel consultant has secured your northern lights tour.

Your Nordic Visitor consultant will send you a confirmation email with all the details you need to buy suitable flights.

14. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

The weather is somewhat unpredictable in the Nordics, no matter the time of year you visit. In winter you should always come prepared for cold temperatures, which means bringing warm clothing. Here are the essential items that we recommend you pack for your trip:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Waterproof and thermal jackets
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Insulated, waterproof boots
  • Thermal underlayers
  • Waterproof trousers

For more detailed information on what to pack for your Nordic tour, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway and Lapland .

Tour packages to see Northern Lights, European Christmas markets hot tickets as Natas fair returns

northern light tour singapore

SINGAPORE - The Natas travel fair is back and so are the crowds, snapping up tour packages to destinations like Hokkaido, Finland for the Northern Lights, and Christmas markets in Europe.

The three-day National Association of Travel Agents Singapore fair, last held in August 2019, kicked off on Friday (Aug 12) at the Singapore Expo Hall 5 with more than 40 exhibitors. They include travel agencies, national tourist organisations and travel insurance providers.

The organisers are expecting 80,000 to 100,000 visitors this year, on a par with pre-pandemic attendance figures.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan noted at the fair's opening ceremony that outbound travel has picked up pace, with more than 311,000 departures in May this year, a tenfold increase from the previous year.

Natas president Steven Ler said: "Thanks to the pent-up demand over the last two years, we're expecting the surge of holidaymakers to gain momentum as we go through the rest of the year."

Travel agencies The Straits Times spoke to said they are expecting strong demand at the fair this year after a three-year hiatus.

"After Covid-19, people are willing to spend more on travel... For many, seeing the Northern Lights is a bucket list item," said EU Holidays director Ong Han Jie.

The Northern Lights are typically visible only from November to March.

Besides European destinations like Switzerland and Italy, Japan is also highly sought-after , despite the country allowing only package tours for now.

"From now until December, we have 60 groups departing for Japan, but we're going to add 10 to 20 more," said Mr Ong.

Chan Brothers Travel has also seen a "red hot" take-up rate for similar destinations, according to its senior marketing communications manager Jeremiah Wong.

Besides Japan and Western Europe, Turkey has also been popular with its customers.

New travel trends have also emerged, with more customers willing to take tour packages instead of making travel arrangements on their own.

"Besides repeat and new customers, there has been a substantial shift this time round, where people who might not have considered taking group tours in the past have switched over from free-and-easy travel," he noted.

"Many of them are younger customers who are travelling with their parents, and who want peace of mind about (country-specific) pandemic restrictions."

Another major player, Trafalgar, is seeing plenty of interest in trips to see the Northern Lights, as well as multi-city trips to see the Christmas markets around Europe.

northern light tour singapore

"People have been saving up, so they don't mind spending more now... They are also looking for longer and more meaningful trips," said Ms Celest Quek, marketing communications director for Asia at The Travel Corporation, whose brands include Trafalgar and Uniworld River Cruises.

Among travellers who were scouting for deals at the Natas fair on Friday was university student Alan Tan.

The 21-year-old is planning to head to Finland in December for about two weeks to see the Northern Lights with his family.

His family's budget for the trip is up to $10,000 for everything, including the tour package, airfare and food.

"I haven't been on any trips since Covid-19 hit, so I'm really looking forward to this one," said Mr Tan, who was specifically looking for packages that included a visit to the Santa Claus Village in Lapland, and to see huskies.

Others like Mr Yeo Jia Wei, 26, who works in logistics, is looking at a destination closer to home - a week-long trip to South Korea with his friends.

For his first holiday overseas in more than 2½ years, he said he is willing to spend $1,500 on the trip, which is $500 more than what he used to spend on trips pre-pandemic.

"Plane ticket prices increased a lot when countries opened up their borders, but even though travelling is more expensive now, I believe it is well worth splurging on," said Mr Yeo, who is planning to head to the fair this weekend.

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

Northern lights travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are at their peak from late September to late March.

Where can I see the Northern Lights?

The best places to see the Northern Lights are all located in the “Auroral zone” – an area that stretches around the Northern Hemisphere at a latitude of about 66 to 69 degrees north – including parts of:

What causes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with elements in our atmosphere (such as nitrogen and oxygen), creating brightly coloured dancing displays of light.

Am I guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, our local leaders do their best to ensure you get to see nature’s greatest spectacle.

Can the Northern Lights be predicted?

Yes, the Northern Lights can be predicted to some extent.

The activity level of the Northern Lights depends on many things (of which some are predictable and some are somewhat random), including sunspots, coronal holes, solar flares and geomagnetic activity.

If you’re not an astronomer, your best bet is to check the local Aurora forecast – a KP-index number of 3 or higher means you have a good chance of seeing the Lights.

Can I see the Northern Lights with the naked eye?

Yes, you can see the Northern Lights with the naked eye. Humans can most easily see the green and white of the lights at night. A camera, however, does not have the same limitations as the human eye, so the colours may appear brighter and more brilliant in photos.

Can I photograph the Northern Lights?

Of course! There is no magic recipe for capturing the Northern Lights. Still, you’ll want to set your camera on a tripod and ensure it has a manual mode functionality, so you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed to capture the spectacular display best.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS

Witnessing the magical spectacle of the Northern Lights is often described as a magical and once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we can help you make the most out of it. As your tour specialist, Port and Porters offers unforgettable Northern Lights Tours on board our luxurious international cruises. Our Northern Lights Tour is far from just looking for the Aurora Borealis, as it has so much more to offer. Below are some interesting details about the Northern Lights and what our itinerary has for you.

About the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are caused by collisions between charged particles from the sun’s atmosphere with gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere. The different types of gas particles colliding cause variations of coloured lights, which appears in various forms of dramatic displays, from shooting rays to streamers that light up the dark sky with a bright glow. Below are some additional details you may want to know about the Northern Lights.

When to Catch the Northern Lights

January, February and March are the most popular months for Aurora hunting. These three months are usually the mid-winter period in the north. The frequency of clear nights and long durations of darkness provide many great opportunities to catch the Northern Lights. The best time of the night to watch the auroral displays is usually during local midnight, subject to a clear sky.

Reasons Why Being at Sea is the Best Way to Catch the Northern Lights

  • The lights are more vivid and brighter when the skies are darker. However, there are few places that allow darker skies. Thus, by being onboard a cruise, it provides the perfect environment to see the lights with skies at its darkest.
  • In addition, our cruises will conveniently sail you into the auroral oval, which may not be easily accessible by car. This increases the probability of witnessing the gorgeous display of glowing lights, without the disruption of artificial light.
  • Our cruise provides an outdoor observation deck that offers an unobstructed view of the of the Northern Lights, allow you to fully experience the dancing the lights directly above you.
  • An onboard announcement will be made whenever the lights appear to ensure you do not miss a single sight

Port and Porters Northern Lights Cruises offer many attractions at the various ports during the 13 days cruise. Each port offers a different touch of culture and activities that will keep you excited during every stop.

Here are some attractions that should not be missed:

  • Stavanger’s most entertaining museum, housed in an old cannery. This city was once home to more than half of Norway’s canning factories, which provided more than 50% of the town’s employment in 1922. The museum brings you on a journey through the whole 12-stage process from salting to threading, smoking, decapitating, and packing.
  • Also known as Tromsdalen Church, was dedicated on November 19, 1965. This eye-catching architecture was designed by architect Jan Inge Hovig. It is visible from the Tromso Bridge, Tromso Sound, and even by aircraft when landing in Tromso. The glass mosaic created by artist Victor Sparre is one of his most prominent works, consisting of many symbols that generated much attention from visitors.
  • This beautiful and magnificent hotel has a total of 20 rooms beautifully decorated with snow and ice. It may sound and looks cold, but warm, thick, and comfortable sleeping bags will be provided to keep you well and make the stay an incredible and unforgettable experience. The hotel also offers a wide variety of winter activities, such as ice fishing and a trip with the husky dog team.
  • Alta has the largest concentration of rock art in Northern Europe, created by people who were part of the hunting-fishing economy. Rock art comprises paintings and cravings made between 2,000 to 7,000 years ago. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 1985 as the only pre-historic cultural heritage monument in Norway.
  • The very first buildings in Bergen were located in Bryggen. The city has faced many spells of fire, the great fire in 1702 in particular. It was then rebuilt on the foundations that have existed since the 12th century. This means Bryggen is technically still the same despite the passing centuries. The city has been given a place on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List, which consists of the old Hanseatic buildings and wharf, as well as best known designed urban areas from the Middle Ages in all of Norway.

Our Northern Lights itinerary is expertly and specially designed with guest experiences in mind. We often hear people talking about the mesmerizing Northern Lights, or coming across them on the Internet, but there is no better way to experience their ethereal beauty than from the deck of our luxurious cruises. Norway is renowned for its dreamlike mountain ranges, the boundless stretch of glacier landscapes and its amazing Northern Lights tours. While this stunning environment is put in the limelight, let’s not neglect the food that Norway has to offer. For you to really experience a country, it is essential that you taste their local food and authentic Norwegian food is something you do not want to miss out.

Here are some food highlights in Norway that you might want to check out during your Northern Lights cruise.

Brown cheese Brunost or “Brown Cheese” can be found all over Norway in fairly large portions, especially in breakfast buffets. It looks distinctive as it looks like cheese but its brown in color. So why is it brown? Brunost is produced through thorough boiling of a combination of milk, cream, and whey to ensure that the water evaporates. The milk is caramelized during the heating process which gives the cheese its sweet taste and its unique brown look that never fails to entice Norwegians. Brunost can be used as toppings for sandwiches, bread or even waffles, so give it a try during your Northern Lights tour!

King crabs During the course of your Northern Lights tour, you should definitely try out the King Crabs in Norway. Who doesn’t love king crabs? Their spectacularly juicy claw meat ranked them as one of the best Norwegian delicacies by the locals. In restaurants, these high-protein crabs are often served in many variations with delicious sauces and spices that will entice your taste buds. Indulging in the king crab like this is an absolute joy that you should not miss out on in Norway!

Reindeer steak Reindeer steak became one of the most exciting food in Norway because the meat is so lean and delicious that it will not disappoint you. During the 13-Day Northern Lights tour, the cruise will be harbored at the port of Bergen. At Bergen, it is an absolute must to visit Bryggen Tracteausted which is situated in the historical area of Bryggen. The restaurant has a rich history that goes back to 1708 and its ambiance makes you feel like you are in one of those days. You definitely can’t go to Norway without trying the Reindeer steaks their menu!

Packing Tips

northern light tour singapore

To ensure that you are well prepared for the 12-Day Northern Lights tour, we created some packing tips that will come in handy when packing your baggage.

Appreciating the northern lights demands a lot of patience and quality clothing to stay warm during the process. Besides all the clothing required to keep warm, it is recommended to have additional outfits like winter boots and waterproof trousers that will aid you in your walking during the Northern Lights tour. Accessories like Sunglasses is also essential during the tour because it helps to protect your eyes from the snow glare which are harmful to your eyes.

While the Northern Lights blaze across the night sky, it would be a waste if that mystical moment is left unphotographed.

Thus, it is important to pack your camera, along with a tripod or monopod and multiple SD memory cards to record down moments that you can revisit them several years later. As the cold environment depletes batteries at a fast pace, it is advisable to pack an extra charged camera battery so that your camera doesn’t fail on you during the Northern Lights tour. Lastly, it is also good to pack your camera equipment in a plastic bag so that they are kept dry and warm for optimal functionality. The packing list shown below is suitable for all seasons and you can add them to your basics:

  • Camera, SD memory card and Extra Charged Batteries
  • Tripod/Monopod
  • Comfortable everyday shoes
  • Wool sweater or fleece
  • Passport and/or ID card
  • Sun protection
  • Credit cards
  • Wind and waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Mid layer jacket
  • Woolen underwear
  • Winter boots with good grip
  • Thick winter jacket
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Woolen socks
  • Fleece sweater
  • Light jacket (water-resistant)
  • Light woolen socks
  • Hiking shoes
  • Light scarf
  • Thin hat and gloves

Northern Lights Photography Tips

northern light tour singapore

Not being able to take nice pictures of the Northern Lights using a smartphone is a myth. You absolutely can, and here is what you need to know:

  • Dark images need a longer exposure, where even the slightest movement can leave you with a blur picture.
  • Inexpensive smartphone stands work equally well too. Recommended to get one with bendable legs that allows you to prop up on a backpack, rock, or wrap it around a fence.
  • Auto mode for this kind of photography is not ideal. Try setting to manual mode instead.
  • Some smartphones do not have pre-installed manual mode in the native camera app. Thus, for such situation, it is recommended to download apps like ProCam that offers manual controls.
  • Set your ISO to 800. If the ISO is too high, you may get graininess in your pictures.
  • Set the exposure to 15 seconds to allow more time to capture the Northern Lights when it flickers across the sky.
  • Download picture editing apps to improve the quality of the picture. Basic adjustments like brightness, tone, contrast can make a huge difference

6 Common Mistakes People Who Want to See the Northern Lights Make

So, you want to view the northern lights? We don’t blame you!

The Northern Lights, or the aurora borealis, is arguably mother nature’s most spectacular show.

A trip to view these lights is a long journey from Singapore, and there are no guarantees that they will reveal themselves at any specific time.

This is why we have put together the following article based on our very own experience giving you tips and advice to make the most of this trip of a lifetime and not to make the mistakes many before you have made.

Expecting to see them

This may sound bit silly but hear us out. Many people visit a spectacular country like Norway, Sweden, Finland or Iceland with their only goal to see the Northern Lights dancing prettily above their heads.

Whilst you, of course, want to see this, we would go as far as saying this is the biggest mistake you can make!

If these countries didn’t provide you with a chance at viewing the northern lights, they are still exceptional, beautiful countries to visit, with activities and views you cannot see anywhere else in the world.

The northern lights are never guaranteed to appear, anywhere in the world. So, if you visited one of these countries simply to see the lights and for them not to appear, it would ruin your whole experience of that country.

Visit these counties to experience them, make the most of it, and if you get to see the northern lights, well, that’s an epic bonus!

Not researching where is best to see them

  • Norway, Sweden and Finland are great countries to visit to get a chance to see the northern lights.
  • However, they are big countries, and staying too south will lower your chances of seeing them, if not, make it impossible!
  • The northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, and the whole of Iceland is best for seeing the lights.
  • Do a little bit of research before you book, just to make sure you are visiting the right parts.

The regions that are best for viewing the northern lights also have long summer days, including the midnight sun, and long dark winter days. It is in these long, dark, winter days that will give you the best chance of seeing the northern lights. These are the months from September to March.

Depending on which country you are visiting, it is best to check what the weather conditions are usually like in the middle of winter, from November to January, as this could stop your chances from viewing them should the weather usually be treacherous or overcast at this time.

northern lights beach

Not visiting the area for long enough

Visiting for just a couple of days could limit your chances of seeing the northern lights. The lights can be visible for many days in a row, but they could equally be absent for the same.

We would recommend visiting for 4 nights or more to give yourself the best possible chance of seeing them. You never know, you might be able to see them every single night of your tip!

winter girl

Not packing the right clothing

We are very lucky here in Singapore that we are blessed with such warm weather so the weather in the arctic circle might surprise you!

There are few things worse than being too cold. When you head out to view the northern lights, you don’t know how long you are going to be out there, braving the elements in the arctic circle! It will most likely be 4 hours or more, so you must make sure you have the right clothing on to stop yourself being so cold that it ruins your overall experience.

Base layers will be your best friend. Get yourself some natural fibre base layers for both your legs and your top half. Next, you need some proper socks, followed by waterproof, comfy and well-soled boots. It is likely to be snowy, so if those socks get wet you will be in for a cold and miserable night!

We also recommend investing in a down or feather coat. These types of coats do an amazing job at keeping you warm thanks to the natural fibres.

Also, do not forget warm gloves, a hat and a scarf!

Not booking a tour

When you want to view the northern lights, there are two things you can do; head out yourself to try and find them, or book onto one of many tours that are offered.

Whilst going out on your own is still a great option, we would recommend that you go for the latter option to give yourself the best chance of seeing the lights.

Our reason behind this is that these tours will actively seek out the best viewing spots for viewing the lights based on a number of conditions, including the weather and other predictions. If they are having no luck in one area, they will head out to another.

Many of the guides also help each other out, so if one finds a particularly good spot, they will share this info with others.

Many of these tours will also show you how to take photos of the lights, so you may even come back with a lovely snap of yourself under the lights to show your friends!

What’s more, snowy weather can cause for hazardous driving on the roads. We would rather leave that up to the professionals!
