26x Digital Nomad Apps We’ve Tried, Tested & Approved

Category Digital Nomad , Travel Updated on January 17, 2024

digital nomad apps

The digital nomad life is filled with a whole lot of “new” – new countries, new friends, new languages, new experiences. Living a life of full-time travel and working online means you’re in charge of trying to balance everything –

  • You’ve got to book your next flights.
  • You’ve got to book your next home.
  • You’ve got to manage your time well.
  • You’ve got to manage your finances (wisely).
  • You’ve got to make new friends.
  • You’ve got to plan your itinerary.
  • You’ve got to be productive at work.

That’s a lot of “you’ve got to” if you ask me.

It’s a constant challenge to balance work and all those travel plans. While you want to spend all your days playing tourist – you’ve got to spend days sitting in the coworking space with your head down.

And while nothing is done perfectly, there are some ways to make the digital nomad lifestyle easier.

Digital nomad apps! These apps are designed to help make your digital nomad life more organized, more structured and less stressful.

Since starting the digital nomad lifestyle in 2018, I’ve been testing, downloading and trying all kinds of digital nomad apps to see what can help us be more organized. This list continues to grow (as the movement grows) which is exciting because people are starting to create apps for digital nomads specifically!

The 26x Digital Nomad Apps You Need In Your Life

The digital nomad lifestyle can sometimes be portrayed wrong – people think it’s all about travel and visiting new places, but it’s also about simply living! it’s about trying to find the harmony between working hard, learning about new places/cultures and honestly just building a routine.

For this list of digital nomad apps, I’ve broken it down into 5 categories:

  • Budgeting and Banking
  • SIM Cards and Internet
  • Productivity

I’ll be honest: it’s difficult! I can’t even count how many different routines we’ve tried over the years and it can get discouraging when you’ve got to leave a city before you’ve had the opportunity to explore its main attractions.

If you’re a digital nomad, remote worker or full-time traveler – make like easier by downloading these apps!

We’ve tried and tested these digital nomad apps on the road and here’s our must-have list:

Digital Nomad Apps: Budgeting and Banking

These are the digital nomad travel apps we always use to book any accommodation, flights and anything else we need to travel well.

Wise (Formerly TransferWise)

Wise is our go-to app for transferring money internationally.

wise digital nomad app banking

It allows you to send money to 50 countries at the real exchange rate. You can also hold up to 40 different currencies in the one Wise account. They are really cheap, often up to 3x cheaper than using a regular bank. And because the exchange rate is at the real market rate, they end up being significantly cheaper than services like PayPal.

The app is very easy to use and only takes minutes to sign up. Direct deposits are also really fast, usually reaching the other person’s account within 24 hours. For some currencies – it’s instant!

wise business account banking

As a digital nomad, being able to pay in the local currency without paying huge exchange fees will save you a lot of money. And a Wise account is completely free, so it’s literally a no-brainer to sign up!

Looking for an international business account?

Wise also offers business accounts . We have saved a ton of money sending and receiving money internationally. You can open an account in up to 40 currencies and make international transfers up to 19 times cheaper than a normal bank.

Wise business accounts are also free and you can link them to your personal account!

No digital nomad likes paying international transaction fees when you just want to pay for a coffee or grab a bite to eat. Revolut is similar to Wise – but does so much more .

revolut banking digital nomad app

We use Revolut as our day-to-day debit card. Revolut also offers market-rate currencies and their fees are slightly less than Wise for smaller transactions. They also have some of the safest security settings of any finance app on the planet. Within the app, you have complete control of the level of security you want on your card, including location-based security. This blocks any transaction that is done when your phone isn’t within 20 meters.

This one feature saved our friend $300 once after his card was stolen!

With Revolut you also get free ATM withdrawals from 55,000 ATMs around the world. We all know how much ATM fees are these days.

Revolut has 3 account options:

  • Revolut Standard – Free
  • Revolut Premium – $9.99 USD per month
  • Revolut Metal – $16.99 USD per month

Each plan has its own benefits, but our personal choice is Metal because we use the card every day! Sign up for Revolut now and get a free $10 welcome bonus when you make your first transaction.

Want to learn more about Revolut? Read our complete Revolut review .

I came across Chime on Instagram and immediately fell in love…with a bank?! Wait, what? Yeah, I know right…But hear me out – they have great branding, a great user interface and honestly such a great purpose – to help people manage their money better. Something we digital nomads need.

chime bank app

Chime is an e-bank, which means there is no physical place you can sign up for a card, only through their app or website. Once approved, you can get a checking, spending and credit-builder account. Each account has different purposes and their app is so easy to use!

This is only available for US citizens and it’s super easy to sign up. If you want to join, my referral link ( chime.com/r/ashleyelliott94 ) gets you $100 when you sign up. Let me know if you have any questions and DM me on Insta . Chime has increased my credit score and improved my money habits and I’m a loyal customer now!

Trail Wallet

Trail Wallet is a simple budgeting app developed by digital nomads, for digital nomads. After looking through a bunch of travel apps for expense tracking, Trail Wallet was the clear winner.

Why? It’s so simple to use! You set your budget categories and choose a budget. Then just record all the expenses and how much you paid for them. Easy right?

trailwallet digital nomad budgeting app

And Trail Wallet supports every world currency. So you don’t have to bother converting the price you paid back to your home currency. Trail Wallet does it for you automatically. At the end of the month, you get a complete rundown of your finances that accurately shows where you spent all of your money. It really does make keeping a digital nomad budget  a breeze.

Trail Wallet allows you to record the first 25 transactions for free so you can get a feel for the app. After that, it’s just a one-time fee of $3.99 for unlimited use!

Digital Nomad Apps: Travel

Google flights/skyscanner.

When we first became digital nomads, we loved using Skyscanner because it gave us a great overview of the deals, airlines, flight times and prices to analyze. However…more recently we have been loving Google Flights.

google flights homepage

While it’s not an app per se (pls make it an app, Google!), it’s a website that is super easy to use and understand your flight options. The main reason we use Google Flights now is because of the ease of use and the deals seem to be better on there (weirdly enough).

google flights price prediction

Since COVID, we have decided to stop using third-party agents eg. Expedia, eDreams, Kiwi, etc because it is harder to negotiate things if you have to go through the middle man. We book directly on the airline’s site and while we might pay a couple of dollars more – we have peace of mind. Google Flights makes it easy to do just that!

Airbnb is our #1 app to book long-term stays as digital nomads. You get to see a wide variety of apartments, houses, private rooms and more. Since the pandemic, I feel their platform has become a little more digital nomad friendly, adding features like wifi speeds, monthly stays and being able to add +3,5,7 days to your dates helps a lot.

airbnb app

We understand there has been some negative backlash against Airbnb’s customer service etc., but you honestly can’t beat the convenience. When we were digital nomads in Asia, we usually booked a place for a week and then did an apartment hunt on the ground to get the best prices. Nowadays, we prefer to book around 6 weeks in advance and stay for at least a month which is why we book through them.

Airbnb gives us peace of mind that we’ve got a fully equipped apartment when we land in a new country. I’ve tried the other apps like VRBO and Anyplace, but it honestly doesn’t even compare. For some reason, VRBO is just waay more expensive than Airbnb, so it’s not worth it to us to make the switch!

Traveling as a digital nomad without insurance ?

Two words: Please don’t! You never know what can happen, especially if you’re constantly traveling to new countries. Figuring out how to get medical help alone can be difficult – imagine if you didn’t have insurance to help you pay for it. It’s easy for hospital bills to get higher and if you don’t know the language your doctors are speaking? It’s just scarier.

For us, we use and recommend Safetywing .

safetywing digital nomad insurance

Safetywing Nomad Health Insurance was created with people like us in mind. That’s why it’s priced so well at only $40 per month no matter where you travel (except the USA :P). It used to cost a little less but they have since raised the price (but only so they can also cover COVID). Totally worth the extra dollars!

Safetywing is our number 1 digital nomad app for insurance and it’s so easy to get started. An alternative to Safetwing is the popular WorldNomads . It’s much more expensive but I believe it covers more than Safetywing does. It’s up to you to decide what’s best for you!

Want to learn more about insurance? Check out our SafetyWing review or our review of the 10 best travel insurance options.

Google Translate

I can’t tell you how many times Google Translate has saved us! We use this app everywhere we go, from being able to converse to simply reading a menu at a restaurant. Download the Google Translate app and keep it handy.

google translate app

The best function of the Google Translate app is the ability to use the camera to read signs, menus and more. When we were  digital nomads in Mexico , we used the app almost every day because our Spanish just wasn’t there yet. But when we were  digital nomads in Asia , we actually didn’t use it as often as it seemed a good amount of people could speak English compared to Latin America .

Hotwire is a platform that gets you the best last-minute deals. How?

When you choose a location to book a hotel, they will give you a mystery hotel before you book. Sometimes, they will say ‘We guarantee it’s between 1 of these 2 hotels’. This allows you to get more dollars shaved off the price!

We’ve used Hotwire in places like Miami, San Francisco and Los Angeles and they always had the lowest prices for the same hotels you see on Booking.com . We can sometimes tell which of the 2 we would get just by doing a little research and it’s worked out great *almost* every time!

hotwire travel app

It’s not just for booking hotels either – you can rent cars on Hotwire! We did this in LA and again it was easily the cheapest option. We paid $160 USD for 5 days and it was using the company Thrifty. Just insane value for money!

Are you a planner? Then you’ll love Hopper !

They claim to save travelers up to 40% off of hotels and flights. The best feature I think Hopper offers is their price prediction graphs. Whenever we plan our travels, I have a look at Hopper to see when are the cheapest dates to fly and more.

hopper app

This digital nomad app is really simple to use and it’s a great alternative to Hotwire, Booking.com and more. Even if you don’t ever book anything via Hopper, their user interface makes understanding and planning your travels so much easier.

Rideshare Apps – Grab/Uber/Lyft

Need a ride? Rideshare apps, like Uber , Grab or Lyft have made life so much easier for us. You can easily order a car (or motorbike in some countries) and it arrives to pick you up and drop you off at your destination. The best part? A fixed price you agree to before you even book!

grab rideshare app

If you’re like me, I just hate haggling with taxi drivers in a new country I’m not familiar with. Here are some of the best rideshare apps digital nomads need:

Uber: The OG of all rideshare apps. Highly recommend keeping this app on your phone because you never know where it’s available. For example, Uber is available in Antigua, Guatemala – who knew? Always check to see if you can use it (some places have forbidden Uber, ahem, we see you Canggu, Bali!).

Grab:  Grab is the Uber of Asia. Uber may or may not be available in certain places, but chances are high that Grab is! It’s popular in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and more. With Grab, you can ride in cars or on the back of a motorbike which can be pretty fun (depending on how you look at that lol). When we were Chiang Mai digital nomads, we used Grab pretty often and the prices were very competitive (often cheaper than a Tuk Tuk!).

Obi: This isn’t a rideshare app but rather an app that tells you which rideshare app (Uber or Lyft) has the cheapest prices. You can then open the app with the cheapest price and book that ride. It’s great if you don’t want to flip through the apps to see the best deal.

Digital Nomad Apps: SIM Cards and Internet

There’s a couple of hidden gems in this digital nomad app section. If you’ve ever struggled with figuring out what to do about your phone number or what to do if you don’t have access to the internet – keep reading below.

One of the best and most underrated digital nomad apps you need on your phone! Nomad eSIM is an eSIM app that allows you to use data in several countries.

nomad esim digital nomad app

We always get a local SIM around day 2-3 of arriving in a new digital nomad destination. But sometimes, having data right after you arrive at the airport is important. Simply log in to the Nomad eSIM app, choose the country you’re in and select your plan.

We have used this to get from the airport to our Airbnb which makes us feel safer since we have data/connection to the world in some way. Also, sometimes we’re just lazy and can’t be bothered to find the SIM Card stalls so it gives us that extra time to figure all that out. I can’t emphasize how much of a MUST this digital nomad app is!! If you never even use it, just download it still in case of emergencies!

If you want to join, download Nomad eSIM and add the referral promo code (MATT84DO). It gets you $3 off your first plan purchase. If you have any questions you can DM me on Insta .

Make sure that you also check out our complete guide to the 5 best eSIM providers for travel.

Skype Number

“How do I receive my bank pins/authentication messages?”

Your Skype number is how! I can’t tell you the countless times I’ve seen a post on a digital nomad group asking this exact question. A lot of people (especially Americans) have recommended Google Fi as the solution – but we didn’t think it was a great deal to be honest (more on that below). This was a constant struggle for us during the first couple of years as digital nomads – we even used Matt’s parents’ number at times to authenticate things. But we finally found the solution.

skype number

We pay $7.99 per month for a Skype number (mine is American) – this way we can always get any pins and authenticators within a minute or so. We have never had a text arrive too late – it’s worked every time for us!

Why We Don’t Recommend Google Fi

Simply: it costs way too much!

Most digital nomads will pick up a local SIM card and buy a pre-paid plan. It works out to be significantly cheaper than using Google Fi’s international coverage. Plus you get the benefits of a local SIM card. The only time we recommend Google Fi is if you *absolutely* need to keep your current mobile number and you can’t port your old number to Skype.

If you need a home number for bank authorizations then a Skype number  is the way to go.

Every digital nomad should use a VPN (virtual private network).

As digital nomads, you work from tons of different places and use lots of different wifi networks. These networks open you up to the risk of being hacked, spied on or picking up some nasty malware. VPNs are an easy layer of protection from all of these things. But VPNs are more than just security. What if you want to watch HBO Max or Hulu from another country? Use a good VPN and you can.

nordvpn for digital nomads

Our personal choice is Nord VPN . Matthew has done a ton of research on which digital nomad VPN is the best and Nord VPN wins out every time you compare value for money vs. features.

They have a super-fast VPN which is extremely secure, offering military-grade encryption. And if you sign up using this link it will cost you just $99 USD for 2 years (65% off).

Whether it’s for streaming or security, Nord VPN is an easy recommendation as a top digital nomad app.

For more info about VPNs, check out our blog on the best digital nomad VPN .

Wish you could take your wifi with you wherever you go? Now you can!

Digital Nomad Apps: Productivity

Productivity is such a struggle when you’re a digital nomad. Your work environment is constantly changing and you need to find some sense of routine and stability. Here’s the best digital nomad apps to stay productive:

The most simple, user-friendly time/task management app. To be honest, we didn’t really like Notion when it first came out so we decided to go with ClickUp. While ClickUp is one of the best apps for digital nomads with sizeable teams – it became too complicated and unnecessary for 2 people like us.

notion productivity app

Notion is a great digital nomad app because it is simple, clean and helps you stay organized. Whether you need to plan your trip, organize your business or just journal – Notion is as good as it gets! I downloaded a free template from @JulesAcree and I’ve modified it to make it mine but it’s a great foundation for your Notion. Above is a peek inside my personal Notion and how I’ve organized it to suit my style of work/life management.

The hardest thing to nail down as a digital nomad is…

…how you spend your time! We have struggled with this since we started in 2018 and while we aren’t amazing at it yet – we have improved thanks to Toggl ! I’m actually using it right now to write this blog 😛

toggl pomodoro method app

Toggl is a task/project management tool that allows you to track your time, use the Pomodoro method and more. For the 1st week, we suggest just turning it on and seeing what you spend your time on. From here, you get a deeper analysis of what’s sucking time or where you are productive. Afterwards, you can use it to track your time when you work/do a task. You’d honestly be surprised at the results – we were!

Timeshifter

If you’re big on sleep, it’s probably because you read the book “Why We Sleep”. Matthew has done quite a bit of research on sleep and prioritizes it now. As we are digital nomads traveling full-time, our sleep patterns get interrupted quite a bit and if you add jet lag to that? Pshhh – talk about a couple of wasted days.

timeshifter jetlag app

We tested the Timeshifter app on our journey from Greece to Mexico. This was a 16-hour journey with a huge time difference. Simply add your trip to the app and it will give you notification throughout the trip on whether you should sleep, nap, eat, or drink coffee at certain times to beat jet lag. It worked pretty well and we were off to a great start as Merida digital nomads. Highly recommend this digital nomad app if you’re struggling with jet lag.

Calculate My Sleep

As we travel around our routine is constantly changing.

The truth is that we need to reset our bedtime in almost every digital nomad destination we visit.

That’s why we use this free sleep calculator to see what time we should be going to bed and make sure we are getting enough sleep cycles in each night.

calculate my sleep

The best part is that it’s super easy to use!

Simply add the time you want to wake up and your age. Calculate My Sleep instantly tells you what time you should go to bed to feel refreshed and energized the next morning.

It’s also perfect if you have an early morning flight. Just choose the time you need to wake up to catch your flight and Calculate Mh Sleep will tell you when to go to bed. It’s a feature we use all the time!

Going to sleep now?

Calculate My Sleep has a cool feature that allows you to see what time you should wake up if you go to bed right now. it doesn’t get much simpler than that.

Got too many time zones to keep track of? We know the feeling! My immediate family is spread out across Alaska, France and the Philippines so TimeBuddy has literally become my best friend whenever we need to set up a family call.

time buddy time zone apps

There’s a desktop version too but that app is pretty simple to use. You can add up to 4 different time zones for free. The best part of the app is how easy it is to understand the times for each country – it lines it all up for me (as seen in the photo above). An underrated MUST on your digital nomad apps.

How do I read books while I’m a digital nomad?

That’s actually a pretty common question that we get! If you’ve only got 50lbs of digital nomad luggage to work with…you can’t carry books with you, right? Sadly, that’s right. I love reading physical books, but it just doesn’t work with this lifestyle. So we made a conscious compromise to switch to Audible .

 audible book app

Simply sign up for Audible , download the app and you can immediately begin to *listen* to books. We’ve come to love reading this way and find we actually read more because it’s so easy to listen!

Worried about cyber security hacks as you travel? You should be! If you’re constantly connecting to public wifis like ones from cafes – you need to make your passwords hack-proof.

Use a password management app like LastPass . Keep all of your passwords in one place and ensure your account doesn’t get hacked! They have dark web security, password generators (to make it hard for hackers :P) and an easy-to-use design.

lastpass password manager app

You can even do cool things like add your cards to LastPass and it auto-fills for you when you make a purchase (if you trust it with your card lol).

Digital Nomad Apps: Community

One of the hardest things about being a digital nomad is loneliness. That’s why finding digital nomad communities is so important! Here are some of the best digital nomad apps to help you find a community wherever you are.

TrustedHousesitters

We love TrustedHousesitters ! We think it’s such a great way to live like a ‘local’ wherever you are but…

…the biggest bonus is having a pet by your side. Let me try to explain TrustedHousesitters in one sentence: a platform to find house/pet sits anywhere in the world. You do NOT get paid to housesit – this is a mutual exchange! The owners give you free accommodation (usually shoulder the utility cost) and in exchange, you carry out the responsibilities for taking care of their pet (walking 2x times a day for 30+ minutes, etc).

trustedhousesitters app

Matthew and I have done over 7 sits now across the USA, England and Australia. We have been pretty lucky with our owners because they have all been so nice and welcoming to us. The pets have been the best especially since I love dogs – they fill that void for me while we continue to travel full-time. For some sits, we were given access to a car which makes everything easier, especially if you choose a sit that doesn’t have easy access to public transport.

If you really want to visit a certain country (like England where it costs an insane amount for rent!), check out TrustedHousesitters for any sits first! We stayed in England for 8 weeks rent-free thanks to housesitting and we got to explore the countryside.

WorkFrom is a very cool and much-needed digital nomad app. Maybe you’re not a fan of coworking spaces and love to work from (see what I did there?!) cafes?

workfrom digital nomad app

WorkFrom allows you to discover the best cafes to work from and gives you valuable information like whether there are plugs, wifi and good seating available. While it’s not the most accurate and doesn’t have every single cafe in the world – it works pretty well when you’ve got zero clue where to go!

Want to make new friends? Meetup is a platform where you can find events, excursions and workshops to meet new people wherever you are located.

meetup community app

Simply type in your current digital nomad city then a list of upcoming events will appear for you to join. Joining an event is free but if you want to create your own events, it’s around $10 a month (kinda steep if you ask me).

Good ole Reddit – you gotta love it! Reddit is a community forum platform and one of the best digital nomad apps to get valuable information.

reddit app

Most people post their real experiences and ask questions to form discussions on various topics. A great place to hang out if you want the latest news on first-hand experience of how to get into Thailand in 2022 (a repetitive search for us lol) or simply to ask “ how to become a digital nomad “.

The Ultimate List of Travel Apps & Tools for Nomads

Updated: Jan 24, 2023 • by Thomas K. Running

As more and more people decide to become location-independent we are finally seeing a lot of tools, apps and gear making it easier to manage and excel at a life on the road.

Having moved around and traveled a lot over the past seven years, over time I have found, tested, and even helped make some of the best tools out there for digital nomads and long-term travelers.

A couple years ago I started collecting and curating my top picks in a range of categories. What they all have in common is that they will greatly simplify and improve your life, business, relationships or happiness.

This list is a living document, so if know another useful tool or resource that I should include, please let me know (if you’re logged in, you can use the live chat).

This article kept getting longer and longer, nearing the volume of a mid-length e-book. So I decided to split it up in multiple parts that will be published over the next few months. To be notified of the next parts, make sure you’re subscribed to Nomad Gate .

Part One: Travel

Nomads tend to travel a lot. Perhaps not as much as some hardcore business travelers, but more than almost anyone else. Personally I step on a plane somewhere between 50 and a 100 times every year.

And traveling can be painful. Especially if you do several medium-term moves throughout a year. It’s not just the physical travel that causes “pain,” but also planning the travel and getting to know your new “home town”.

In this chapter of the series, I’m bringing you the best tools and services to simplify pre-travel planning , the actual act of traveling , and the post-arrival research and discovery .

Pre-travel planning

Before you ever set foot in the airport, you have to sort out a few things:

  • Choose your destination
  • Book flights and accommodation
  • Apply for visas, if required
  • Make sure you have valid travel and health insurance coverage

Let’s go through the steps one by one.

Choosing your destination

Nomad list (free to search, community features $30/mo, $99/yr, $150 lifetime).

The de facto nomad home page. Pieter Levels has created an immensely useful directory of popular nomads destinations. You can filter for all sorts of things, such as cost of living, climate, internet speeds and LGBT safety.

It’s the perfect discovery site, especially for people that somehow work remotely.

Teleport Cities (Free)

Teleport Cities is also a powerful search tool to find “your best city to live and work”. That might on the surface sound a lot like Nomad List, but there are some core differences.

Although you can select “working remotely” in your preferences, Teleport Cities can take into account how your income might change by moving to a new city, if you decide to find a job locally. It can also take into account levels of personal and corporate taxation, how well established the startup and venture capital scenes are, quality of healthcare and education, and hundreds of other variables.

All in all, I think the two products are very complementary. Nomad List has a stronger focus on “ live ” and Teleport Cities also focus on “ work ”. Nomad List is perfect for short to medium term stays (less than three months), while Teleport Cities is good for medium to longer term stays (more than 3 months). I personally use both when deciding on my upcoming destinations.

A little bit less traditional way of scoping out your next destinations is to look at a foreign exchange rate map. Select the currency you are making most of your income in, and see which currencies have become cheaper or more expensive of late.

Why pay full price for a country when you can get it on sale? It’s like Groupon for countries.

Is Norway on your bucket list, but you think it’s too expensive to visit? Are you mostly earning US dollars? Right now Norway is on sale! It’s 30% cheaper than just a few years ago, thanks to a weakened currency. It’s still not cheap, but a much better deal than it normally is.

Booking flights and accommodation

Google flights.

Over the last couple years, Google has built what is perhaps the world’s best search engine for flights. It has a very clean and intuitive interface. It’s based on the tech behind ITA Matrix, a product Google acquired to build Google Flights .

Instead of overwhelming you with options, it will highlight the best few options according to your preferences, and even suggest slightly different travel dates or airports if it can save you a significant chunk of cash. It is also very snappy, and shows tickets other engines does not show. For example, if you can only get a fare by calling the airline directly, Google Flights will tell you how to do so. It also factors in the fees for ordering over the phone. If you’re not sure where to go, it will show you a map with the prices to different destinations.

It’s powerful, easy to use, and currently where I start any flight search.

Let’s not forget the most powerful publicly available flight search, Matrix by ITA Software . It’s what powers the above mentioned Google Flights. But unlike Google’s flight search, Matrix allows you to fine-tune everything. Want to geek out with advanced routing codes, force certain layovers, or look at a ton of different airports at one time? Matrix has got you covered.

The main drawback of Matrix is that you cannot actually book the flights through them. They won’t send you to a partner site to buy tickets either. After finding the perfect flights, you will have to manually find the flights again using Google Flights, Orbitz, or the airline’s website.

If price is your number one concern, then Kiwi.com (formerly Skypicker) is your friend. While most online travel agents will only show itineraries where all flights are on the same carrier, alliance or at least partner airlines, Kiwi doesn’t limit its search in that way. Instead they use smart algorithms to find the cheapest way from A to B, even if that means flying two competing airlines on separate tickets.

You can actually save a lot of money this way but it comes at the cost of flexibility. All flights booked through Kiwi are non-refundable. Changes might be possible for a fee. But if you just want the cheapest possible flights, Kiwi is the way to go.

The product also has a lot of features for flexible travelers. For example you can use radius search both for departure and arrival airport, as well as being as flexible as you’d like for departure dates and so forth.

The main issue I have with Kiwi is that their airline filter is not always available. Do you really want to subject yourself to the torture that is Ryanair or Spirit? I know I don’t. But currently you can’t filter out those itineraries for multi-city searches or searches using a more flexible destination or departure location (like radius search or entire countries).

If you are both quite flexible (as many of us nomads are) and value cheap flight, then PanFlights is for you. It’s especially helpful when planning a multi-destination trip. When planning such trips, the order of the destinations and exact dates are often not so important. Often you just have a vague idea of what places you’d like to include in your itinerary, and some approximate start and end dates.

PanFlights makes it easy to find potential journeys within the constraints you set. Just input the cities or areas (it supports radius search) you’d like to visit, and the minimum length at each destination (or specific dates if that’s needed). Try the “Optimized tour” search, and experiment with clicking the “stopover” and “customize” buttons on the result page for smart stopover suggestions. It has a slight learning curve, but makes up for it by a large margin in usefulness.

For complex itineraries it relies on Kiwi.com’s data and offers, which is a good thing as that is already Kiwi’s strengths. But PanFlights takes it even further.

Together with Momondo , Skyscanner is sometimes able to find some significantly cheaper fares than their competitors. It might not be the most user-friendly of the bunch, but I usually check the price on Skyscanner after finding flights I like on a different site.

Just note that many of the online travel agents featured on Skyscanner add lots and lots of fees for using most credit and even debit cards, making changes or selecting seats (on top of airline fees), and so on. Personally I prefer booking directly with airlines, unless I save at least $50-100 or more and know there’s just a very slim chance I need to make any changes.

Note : Jen from Skyscanner reached out to me to let me know that every travel agent featured in their results will need to at least provide one free payment option, which usually is the most popular card in the country.

Expert Flyer ($5 to $10 per month)

When ITA Matrix doesn’t do it for you anymore, you know you’ve become a travel geek. The logical next step is Expert Flyer. I’ve personally used it to choose transatlantic flights where I was likely to get upgraded to business class (and it worked!). And for many airlines it’s the best place to search for award availability. You can even set up alerts. Not only for award tickets but even when your favorite seat opens up. Or if there’s an aircraft change.

There’s a 5-day trial with no credit card required , so feel free to give it a try. If you decide to subscribe, it’s $5 or $10 per month. It can be well worth it if you fly a lot.

Skiplagged is one of the most innovative flight search engines. So innovative, in fact, that United Airlines sued them. What made them deserving of a lawsuit? Well, they help you find “hidden city” tickets. Say you are going from New York to Paris, and a one-way ticket is $800. Skiplagged might be able to find a ticket from New York to Dublin for $550, but with a layover in Paris. Buy the ticket to Dublin, but just get off in Paris. $250 saved just like that. Don’t try this if you have checked in luggage, but if you travel light it can save you some dough.

Hopper (Free to use, $5 per booking)

While the options above will help you find the cheapest flights available right now , Hopper will actually tell you when to book to get the best deal. Just enter your destination and preferred dates, then leave it to Hopper. The app will not only monitor the price of the itinerary, but also give you advice along the lines of “your flight price will probably increase with $70 or more on or around March 20” or “the current price is $450, but you can likely save about $125 if you wait”.

It’s really useful when you know roughly when and where you want to go. I wish there would be some more flexibility built in (e.g. allowing a date range rather than specific dates), but even without that it is likely to save you some money and provide some additional assurance that you’re booking at the right time.

A final limitation is that Hopper relies on sufficient historical price data being available for a particular route in order to provide accurate predictions, meaning that less frequented routes will have limited or no helpful information. It will definitely be helpful for San Francisco to New York or London, probably less so for Riga to Chiang Mai.

This website is great for finding cheap tickets on multiple low cost carriers. It offers lots of customization options and work with over 100 LCCs and over 1000 airports. There’s no need to enter exact travel dates, which makes it easy to find good deals if you’re a bit flexible.

The one big drawback I’ve found is that it only works with LCCs, no full-service carriers will show up in the results. Personally I prefer flying full-service, and only fly LCCs when that’s by far the most convenient option. Still, this is a great website to check in addition to e.g. Google Flights.

Thanks to Nomad Gate member Ivan-Lazar Bundalo for this tip!

This is a unique take on the good old travel hack of adding a stopover (stop of more than 24 hours) to both save a few bucks and at the same time get to experience a “bonus” city that you wouldn’t otherwise have visited.

Start by entering your travel dates and destination, then you have the option of adding a layover of X number of days in a specific city. An approximate savings amount (or additional cost) is also shown.

What the product is currently missing is added flexibility, both in terms of dates and destinations. But it definitely has potential, so give it a try!

Flightfox (From $49)

A few years ago, Flightfox turned flight booking on its head. You would describe your perfect trip and a bunch of “flight hackers” (both professionals and more amateurish) would compete to find the lowest price for that specific itinerary. The winner would receive a bounty set by the traveler.

That didn’t last forever, probably due to the extra friction of turning your simple flight booking into a call for tender with all the overhead that entails. After a while, they pivoted to only have really great flight hackers on the platform. And it’s no longer a competition between experts to find the best itinerary. You now pay a fixed price depending on the complexity of your trip, and work with an assigned expert to find the best itinerary for your needs. If you use their “beat my price” service, you will only pay the “search fee” if they can save you more money compared to what you found on your own.

Flystein (From $29)

Some people might enjoy planning their flights, and that’s fine. But it gets repetitive rather quickly when moving around all the time. Flystein is a younger startup, doing very similar things to Flightfox.

They are comparatively cheaper, however. Flystein’s pricing starts at $29 for a one-way domestic trip and $49 for a return or international trip. Flightfox starts at $49. Both services charge more for added complexity, but Flightfox is consistently a bit more expensive. E.g. the additional fee for finding a ticket using your frequent flier miles is $74 with Flightfox, versus $30 for Flystein.

Personally, I’ve used Flystein a handful times, usually by using their “beat my price” system, where you don’t pay anything unless they beat the price you found on your own by more than their service fee. About half the time they have been able to find better flights for me than what I found myself (sometimes using obscure techniques such as the mythical “fuel dump”), and half the time I’ve found equally good flights on my own. In the latter cases I of course didn’t pay them any fee.

A limitation of both Flightfox and Flystein is that, unlike Hopper, they won’t tell you when to book your flights, and the deals they find might not stick around for long—so you should only reach out to them once you’re ready to pull the trigger.

Flightconnections.com

H/T to Paul Stefan Bohm for sharing this useful tool with me. With Flightconnections.com you can find the best routes between any airports in the world. Wonder how you can get to Timor-Leste from Berlin? Well, with a couple clicks you will know.

You might even find a cheaper route by splitting the journey up between multiple airlines.

I am not sure how often they update their database of flight connections. There have been times where I’ve found a connection not listed there elsewhere, or failed to find a connection they claimed existed. But it is still a great starting point for further research, so give it a try!

Flight deal sites and newsletters

One of the best ways to come by good deals on flights is to subscribe to various flight deal sites and mailing lists.

Here are some of the best, covering large parts of the globe.

They generally come in two varieties, paid/freemium and affiliate-based. Since the affiliate based sites earn commissions when you book through them some of them seem to publish a lot of fares—even if the deals are only okay , not great . Personally I like the paid/freemium sites better. They tend to share better deals that last longer (due to fewer people trying to get the same tickets).

Jack’s Flight Club (Europe & US*—Freemium)

*Jack has local newsletters for the UK 🇬🇧, Ireland 🇮🇪, Germany 🇩🇪 Netherlands 🇳🇱 Belgium 🇧🇪 Denmark 🇩🇰 Norway 🇳🇴 & Sweden 🇸🇪. Now also from Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, & Washington D.C. in the US 🇺🇸

JFC has only been around for a couple of years, but Jack and his team regularly finds some great deals. I recently booked an around the world trip they found on the fantastic airlines Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand for just over $1000!

The premium subscription is £39/€39/$49 per year and will give you access to about four times as many deals as the free newsletter, plus it allows you to select exactly which airports you want deals from.

Give the free newsletter a try today , then upgrade to Premium once you realize how much you can save.

Scott’s Cheap Flights (US only*—Freemium)

The premium subscription is $49 per year and will give you access to three times as many deals as the free newsletters.

As a paid subscriber you can also pick exactly what airports you want to receive deals for, making sure you only get deals that are relevant for you.

HolidayPirates / Urlaubspiraten (Germany, Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US—Free)

This is a very popular free site in Germany (I have friends there who use it a lot), and in the last few years they have also expanded to lots of other countries: Austria, France, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the United States.

In addition to flight deals, they also feature a lot of flight + hotel packages. These are generally for shorter stays (a few days to a week or two), so not ideal for most nomads.

I Want That Flight (Australia—Free)

A decent curated newsletter featuring great flight deals from Australia. They also offer flight and hotel search. Not as active as some of the other newsletters on this list.

I’m pretty sure (the paid) Australian newsletter from Scott will get you more deals, but since this one’s free it doesn’t really hurt to try.

The Flight Deal / Fare Deal Alert (US—Free)

The Flight Deal and Fare Deal Alert are sister flight deal curation sites, providing a near identical service, but for a different selection of cities. The sites are even more useful for non-nomadic people that are mostly based near one particular US airport, since the deals are organized based on departure airport. Also, the deals are almost exclusively return flights.

Can someone please build The Nomad Deal, featuring super cheap one-way flights around the world? TheNomadDeal.com is available. Just sayin’.

Still, even with their shortcomings from a nomad perspective, both sites can be useful if you’re traveling near or in the US. For example, if I’m staying in San Francisco for a couple months, I’ll set up an IFTTT recipe that will text me when they post new deals departing from SFO (they provide RSS feeds per city!) to destinations that I’m interested in. Return flight to Panama for $200? Sounds like a cool weekend trip to me.

Book directly with an airline

As a digital nomad, I would assume that you enjoy flexibility and value for money. If that’s the case, I would recommend looking closer at a handful of airlines the next time you’re planning a trip.

Check out the best airlines for nomads and long-term travelers .

Accommodation:

As a nomad, renting a furnished apartment is a must. And Airbnb is the most comprehensive listing and booking site for short to medium term apartment rentals in the world. Prices tend to be a little higher than what you could find in the local rental market due to their service fees and target market. But not having to learn the ins and outs of the rental market in a city where you’ll only stay for a month or three is totally worth it in most cases.

You can also get heavily discounted prices by booking monthly or sometimes even weekly. And it also doesn’t hurt to negotiate a bit on the price, especially if you are staying for a while.

(Written from a hammock on the rooftop terrace of my Airbnb rental in Medelliín.)

Booking.com

If you are booking more traditional accommodations, i.e. hotels, hostels or holiday apartments, Booking.com should be your first stop. They have by far the most inventory worldwide, and hotels listed on the site are not allowed to sell rooms at a lower price elsewhere. They are being sued in a few countries over this practice, but it does generally give you the best deal as a consumer.

It’s not only their low prices that make them a good place to book your hotel stays. Unlike many other OTAs they actually have useful and user-friendly apps. And the website is good too.

In addition to Booking.com I usually check Trivago for hotel prices. It’s quick and easy to do a sanity check, to make sure I’m not overpaying. They compare the prices of all major (and not so major) booking sites. In the past I’ve saved around 30% by doing a quick search on Trivago. It primarily features hotels, but there are also some hostels and similar on there.

Couchsurfing (Free)

The best things in life are free… Right? Well, Couchsurfing is pretty cool. And free. You probably know CS already, but let me briefly explain how it works for those who don’t. It’s a platform where people invite other people into their homes, for free. But forget about the “free” part. The reason why I really enjoy Couchsurfing is the people you meet. And their local knowledge. If your goal is to experience the local culture, Couchsurfing is a lot better than staying in hotels or hostels.

Then again, most CS hosts would be reluctant to host someone for more than a few days, so it’s better for short stays. And from a financial perspective I would rather pay $15–20 for a hostel, guest house or Airbnb than spending hours contacting CS hosts over and over again. But when I have a couple days to experience a city, it is well worth the effort.

You can also use the Couchsurfing platform to find locals to hang out with (without staying with them), and even join local meet-ups.

TrustedHousesitters.com ($119 per year)

Housesitting is another way to travel for “free”, while staying in comfortable apartments, villas, or all sorts of other homes. Usually a housesit involves taking care of the owner’s pet(s) while they are away. Dog and cats are the most common, but in some cases it seems to be a small farm that needs taking care of. Personally I do housesitting not primarily to save on rent, but rather because I love dogs. But having a dog as a nomad would be really challenging. So I housesit instead. So far I’ve taken care of a terrier in a beautiful West Berlin apartment, and some amazing chihuahuas in a lovely house with panorama view over the San Francisco Bay Area.

There is a handful of pretty decent housesitting platforms out there, and they are all paid. You pay for access to the platform, not for the actual house sit. And it makes sense to spend a few dollars on a membership. The paywall contributes to keeping bad apples away, increasing the overall trust on the platform.

TrustedHousesitters.com is probably the best housesitting platform, primarily because it has the largest and most active user base. It has some nice features, like email notifications when a housesit opens up in a country you’re interested in. Like other platforms, most listings are in North America and Europe.

If you sign up via my referral link you get 20% off your membership fee!

If you are traveling in South-East Asia, you should be using Agoda. They have established direct relationships for more hotels, hostels and guest houses than any other booking site in the area.

You can save some serious cash by booking hotels, rental cars and flight tickets via Hotwire. Their Hot Rate® Hotel, Car, and Flight bookings work a quite different from what you might be used to. E.g. for Hot Rate® Hotels you can see the star rating, the neighborhood, the list of amenities, the retail price, the Tripadvisor rating, and the percentage of Hotwire users that recommend the particular hotel. What you cannot see is the exact location or name of the hotel.

Personally I’ve used Hotwire for a minivan we rented for Burning Man, which turned out to be ridiculously cheap. You might also have success with Priceline, which has a similar concept.

Co-living spaces and retreats

There are now more and more co-living, co-working and retreats tailored to digital nomads and remote workers. I am currently writing an article comparing the best ones. It should be ready in the next few weeks. Make sure to join Nomad Gate to be notified when it is published.

Make sure you have the right visa

For a while I relied primarily on Wikivoyage for visa information when traveling. But after I nearly made a huge blunder when traveling to Myanmar a few years ago I always check 2–3 sources to be safe.

Wikipedia’s Visa Requirement pages

I have found Wikipedia’s Visa Requirement pages to be very accurate and easy to use. It’s super quick to get an overview over how many days you can stay in a country visa-free.

You should look for a Wikipedia article named “Visa requirements for [INSERT YOUR NATIONALITY] citizens”. You can find the link to the relevant page for your nationality here .

Timatic / TravelDoc

In addition to Wikipedia, I also check either TravelDoc or Timatic.

Timatic is normally an expensive yearly subscription aimed at airlines and travel agents, but it is also provided for free to the public by the IATA Travel Centre . This is the same database most airlines use when they decide to let you board or not, so it is very accurate.

Another player in this space is TravelDoc , which is also used by a lot of airlines. Their UI is a bit better than Timatic, and you can even add a multi-city trip with all your stops and layovers, and they will tell you what visas you need to get.

VisaHQ is another user-friendly option and has the information you need at a glance. For residents of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, UAE, India, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland and Singapore they can also help you with the visa process for a fee.

Note: I’ve heard some not so great feedback on their customer service level and pricing, so due your due diligence prior to using them for your visa application.

Verify your travel and health insurance coverage

Much can be said about insurance, particularly travel and health insurance . Most people should have some sort of health insurance with coverage in the countries where they live and travel. By setting a high deductible you get fairly affordable coverage for worst case scenarios, but for more inexpensive treatment you’ll normally be better off by paying out of pocket instead of relying on insurance.

I have a lot more to say about global primary health insurance , as well as travel and accident insurance . In fact I’m currently writing an in-depth article on the topic, so make sure to join Nomad Gate to be notified when it is ready.

Getting there…with your sanity intact

Planning and booking your travel is one thing, but many people find the actual act of traveling much more stressful.

I’m luckily not one of those people, in large part thanks to the apps and services I use to stay organized and up to date.

TripIt (Free / $49 per year for Pro)

The app used and loved by nearly all serious travelers. If you have yet to try it out, your life is about to change!

By forwarding your confirmation emails to TripIt ( [email protected] ), all your flights, hotels, train rides, restaurant bookings, tours and more will be automatically organized for your trips. Or you can give TripIt access to your inbox, and it will detect whenever you get booking confirmations, and organize it all in your trip itinerary.

Their pro version can also be well worth it. I’ve been using it now for the better part of a decade. And although the extra perks aren’t that significant, the Pro features have saved my ass more than once. The check-in notifications 24 hours before a flight, especially.

“Holy shit, I’m flying across the world tomorrow. How could I forget??” –Me, on multiple occasions

For example, I was on my way out for the second dive of the day outside Maafushi in the Maldives when I get a check-in notification. In my mind I thought my flight was 48 hours later, but I had mixed up the days. And as all divers know, you cannot fly until after at least 24 hours have passed since your last dive. And even longer if you have done multiple dives. You can literally die. Rescheduling one flight wouldn’t have been a big deal. But I actually had four flights the next day, on mostly separate tickets, and mostly different airlines. Thank you TripIt for saving my butt. Or at least a significant chunk of money.

Other pro features include real-time alerts, alternate flight search (in case of delays, missed connections), seat tracker, point tracker, flight refund alerts (e.g. if a price you booked dropped in price by more than the change fee), extra sharing features, as well as VIP benefits with a range of partners. Currently those benefits include $25 Lounge Buddy credit and 4 months free CLEAR membership. In the past it has included Hertz #1 Club Gold and Regus Gold memberships.

Priority Pass ($99-$399/year, or free with credit cards)

If you fly a lot—especially if you don’t have status with Star Alliance, One World, or Sky Team—you need Priority Pass.

Nothing has changed travel as much for me as discovering airport lounges. My old self would absolutely dread the idea of having a five hour layover at some random airport. Now I seek out mid to long layovers—as long as I have lounge access, that is.

Lounges of course vary a lot from airport to airport, and lounge to lounge. But some things are generally quite similar.

Most lounges include:

  • Fast, free wifi
  • Buffet with free food and beverages (usually including alcoholic beverages, although sometimes only beer & wine)
  • Comfortable seating with lots of outlets to charge all your devices
  • Printer/scanner/copier
  • TVs, newspapers, magazines
  • Comfortable desks for working—often also with some PCs/Macs in case you don’t have your laptop with you

Although not universal, many lounges also offer:

  • On demand, made to order food and drinks
  • Spa and massage facilities (sometimes paid)
  • Meeting rooms (sometimes paid)
  • Resting rooms (small private rooms to rest when on long layovers)
  • Lockers with charging points inside
  • Outdoor terrace, occasionally with smoking area

Pretty sweet, right?

Priority Pass is the world’s largest network of lounges, and a membership will give you access to more than 1000 lounges worldwide.

One option is to buy a membership outright, but many times it will be more affordable to get a membership included in a credit card.

If you buy your membership directly from Priority Pass, you’ll pay $99 per year and $27 per visit and guest. The top tier costs $399 per year and will give you unlimited visits for free, but you’ll still pay $27 per guest.

But personally I prefer the credit card route. I currently have unlimited visits for free, even including unlimited number of guests, courtesy of my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card . To me the Priority Pass perk alone is worth the price of card (effectively $150 per year after the $300 travel credit). That’s what I call a steal!

LoungeBuddy (Free)

If I have sold you on the benefit of airport lounges, you also need this app.

The first step is to enter any lounge memberships (like Priority Pass), credit cards, and frequent flier statuses you have.

Then LoungeBuddy can pull your flight plans from TripIt (or you can enter it manually), and you can easily see which lounges you have free or paid access to, where they are, what they offer, when they are open, and reviews from other users.

You can also purchase access to over 200 lounges through the app if you don’t already have complimentary access.

If I have multiple layover options when booking flights I’ll also use LoungeBuddy to help me decide where to have my connection, based on the lounges I would have access to there.

Best Onward Ticket (From $12 per trip)

Planning sucks. Spontaneity is king. Sadly, many countries require you to have an onward ticket booked before they will let you pass immigration. Actually, airlines will often deny you boarding without one.

So what’s the solution? Well, people are using different tactics:

  • Hope for the best … but you might end up having to buy an expensive ticket at the airport or be denied boarding.
  • Book a 100% refundable flight … which is often expensive, and will block funds in your account for a while.
  • Book a cheap flight that you might or might not use … but often plans change and it’s not worth paying the change fees.
  • Print a fake ticket … easy enough to do and it might work. But if they decide to check the validity of your ticket (which is really easy to do), you’re in trouble.
  • Use Best Onward Ticket … they will issue a ticket that stays valid for at least 48 hours. Then they will cancel it. Peace of mind and more flexibility, starting at only $12.

FlightTrack (Free/$4.99)

This is by far my favorite flight tracking app. It’s so good in fact that Tripit cut off their API access, as they felt it competed with some of their Pro features. I don’t use this app as often now that they lost the possibility to automatically fetch my flights from Tripit. But I still use it whenever I am picking someone up from an airport, or if I have a longer trip with layovers, etc.

Update: The developer was acquired by Expedia a while back and they recently decided to shut down the app. I’m still looking for a good alternative, so let me know if you find anything that’s both good and affordable. I’ve seen some people recommend the My Flights app, but it’s a bit pricy for the paid versions, and it’s iOS/web only.

TripMode ($7.99)

Occasionally, especially on long-haul flights, you might have quite a limited data allowance when connecting to the onboard WiFi. Caps of 20 MB or so are not uncommon.

But what often happens when you connect your laptop to the WiFi, all sorts of applications start using data in the background. New emails might be downloaded. Dropbox or Google Drive might start syncing changes. And then POOF ! In less than a minute, the data allowance you spent $20 on is gone before you can even load Gmail or Facebook.

Well, that’s where TripMode comes in. It’s a nifty little app for Mac and Windows that lives in the menu bar and allows you to choose which applications can access the internet. Simply toggle the applications you need to use, and the rest will be blocked for as long TripMode is running.

This can come in handy when you’re sharing your phone’s internet connection with your Mac as well, so your data plan isn’t used up by all sorts of background tasks that can wait until you’re on a regular WiFi network.

You can also save different “profiles” based on the network you’re connecting to, so you won’t have to select which apps to use every time you connect to your phone’s hotspot. The profiles can also enforce selected data caps, with the possibility to set different caps for each profile.

In other words, TripMode will pay for itself in a short time.

OpenFlights.org (Free, or donate up to $50 per year)

One of the potential side-effects of Digital Nomad life is increased affection towards air travel. And in severe cases you might even feel an urge to log all your flights, and show them off on a map for the world to see. That’s what OpenFlights does. And it connects to Tripit so it’s pain and hassle free to keep your flight list up to date. I won’t blame you if you get a little turned on by playing with all those stats. I know I do .

If you want an even nicer map, you can import your OF flights to myFlightradar24 .

Pana Concierge ($99 per month)

Update: Pana is no longer offering their concierge service

Some people enjoy spending hours and hours researching flights, accommodation, or local bus schedules in the mountains of Montenegro. I prefer to hand those task over to Pana (previously called Native), my trusty travel concierge. That leaves me with more time to explore my current location.

You can also have your concierge check in for flights, deal with any delays, rebooking, and other issues that might pop up during a trip.

They offer a 7-day free trial, then it’s $25 $99 per month. It’s not the cheapest service, but it’s still a pretty good deal for frequent travelers with more money than time. I personally cancelled my account when they increased their pricing, but it might be worth it to you.

SkyGuru (~$4.99 per flight)

Many of us have some kind of fear of flying. Even though I take around 100 flights yearly, I still have moments during flight when (I completely irrationally) get a very uneasy feeling.

One app that I initially tested out just for fun, but has actually nearly rid me of any hint of fear when flying, is SkyGuru.

Throughout the flight the app will tell you if and when you can expect turbulence, and explain what the sounds the plane makes and other sensations you’re experiencing actually are and why it’s not anything to be worried about.

There are reviews on the App Store where users say the app has completely changed their life. So if you’re an anxious flyer or just want to learn more about how airplanes work, I recommend giving the app a try!

SkyGuru is currently only available on iOS now available on both iOS and Android. Although the “Pro” version costs $19.99 (iOS only) there’s a light version of the app that you can download for free and instead pay $3.99 per flight with full features.

Update: I was contacted by a representative from SkyGuru who told me the Pro version won’t be updated any longer (but will still work), so if you want access to the newest features it’s best to get the Lite version and purchase individual flights or flight packs.

Offline entertainment apps

For me, one of the best ways of spending my time in the air is to read or listen to audio content. Sometimes I listen to podcasts, sometimes to audiobooks ( Audible , Hoopla ). Other times I’m catching up on articles I’ve saved for later in Pocket (which are available offline, and you can even listen to them).

Whatever you prefer, just make sure to have your content downloaded offline before departure.

On Arrival: Getting to know a new city

When you move from city to city, country to country, many times every year, it really helps having a good routine for how to get to know your new location. If you follow the tips in this section you’ll be up and running and productive in no time!

Wikivoyage (Free)

Wikipedia meets Lonely Planet. It’s the best and most comprehensive collaborative online travel guide.

Whenever I visit a new city I always consult Wikivoyage to find the best ways of getting into the city from the airport and get a general overview over the city. You can download articles as PDFs or even build and download your own custom guide book. I usually do this and read through the PDF while I’m on the plane to get an idea of what there is to do and see in the city I’m about to visit.

Attaché (Free)

If you prefer travel guides in a video format, Attaché is a good option. As they say, it’s the travel show that will get you “in, out, and around some of the world’s greatest cities” in 10-20 minutes. In a typical episode you’ll learn how to get to and from the airport, get around the city, and get a few highlights of what to do, where to eat and drink.

Prepaid Data Sim Wikia (Free)

When staying in a country for a while it’s usually best to get a cheap local prepaid SIM card with plenty of data rather than roaming on your home SIM card.

This website will tell you everything your need to know to get the best prepaid SIM card to suit your needs: Plans & prices, where to buy, ID requirements (if any), etc. It’s all there.

Foursquare (Free)

While most tourists seem to rely on TripAdvisor for finding things to see, do, eat and drink, my preferred way is using Foursquare.

It’s niche enough to not be gamed by most establishments, large enough to have great recommendations in most cities worldwide.

I’ve never had a bad experience at a place rated at least 8.0 or higher on Foursquare.

Swarm (Free)

Another app from Foursquare, centered around checking in to places. What’s the point of that, you may ask?

I think it’s great for keeping track of your travels and finding the names of places you’ve visited and loved when your friends ask you for recommendations down the line. Or when you go back and try to retrace your steps.

As a bonus you can choose to be notified when your Swarm friends “ check in ” in the same city as you. I’ve met up with many friends that happened to be in the same city as me this way. If it wasn’t for Swarm I would have never known they were even on the same continent.

Untappd (Free)

While Foursquare and Swarm help you discover and keep track of amazing places, Untappd does the same for beer.

You check in and rate the beers you drink, and can even use the app to discover bars nearby that have beer you like or want to try.

Vivino (Free)

If wine is more your thing, then Vivino is a similar app centered around tracking, rating, and discovering great wine.

They even have a marketplace that will help you find fantastic wines at a reasonable price that can be delivered to your doorstep.

Meetup.com (Free)

When arriving in a new city, it’s always a challenge to meet likeminded people. One reliable place to start is Meetup.com. You’ll find groups of people centered around various interests, lifestyles, professions, and other general social or expat groups.

Facebook Groups (Free)

More often than not there are some quite active Facebook groups organizing meetups and facilitating connections with likeminded people in whatever city or country you find yourself in. You’ll have to start searching to find what you’re looking for. Try phrases like “ Expats in X ”, “ Nomads in X ”, “ X social ”, “ Meetup X ”, “ [your interest] X ”.

Teleport Ask A Local (Free)

It’s not everything that’s easy to find an answer to on Google, especially if you’re getting to know a new city and keep running into language and other cultural barriers.

What if you had a knowledgeable local you could ask for advice?

With Ask A Local you’ll have access to hundreds or even thousands in each of over 250 cities worldwide. Just select your city, ask your question, and wait for the answers to roll in.

And did I mention it’s all for free?

WHA by Work Hard Anywhere (Free)

When landing in a new city, a frequent challenge is to find a good place to work from. Of course, you could work from your apartment or hotel room, but where is the fun in that?

If you want to get out, get a great cup of Joe, and maybe even meet some people—then coffee shops and coworking spaces are your friends.

The best app for finding places to work from that I’ve found is WHA by Work Hard Anywhere. The only drawback is that it’s iOS only (at least for now). An Android version has been “in the works” for the last couple years—so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for it.

There are a few alternatives that work on web as well as mobile, such as Workfrom and Café Wifi . They work best in larger cities, but can be worth checking out in addition to WHA.

Atlas Obscura (Free)

Tired of following the flow of tourists all flocking to the same handful sights? Atlas Obscura is here to save the day. It’s a collaborative project for discovering and sharing hidden spots and curious places around the world.

This is the first of many…

Being a digital nomad means that technology is a massive part of your lifestyle. Digital nomad apps can help you stay in touch with people, organize travel and work, and generally make your life easier. Check out the following list of some of the best apps for digital nomads to support your nomadic lifestyle:

Digital Nomad Community Apps

Being constantly on the move means that you always need to make new connections, stay in touch with the old ones, be available for your clients, and be organized. To easily organize your trips and keep track of your work, numerous apps can help you, some free and some paid, but well worth it.

Citizen Remote

Citizen Remote is not only the ultimate digital nomad app for community but also for keeping your busy life organized. From help with visas to a simple place to remember your Journey, the Citizen Remote app is designed for the digital nomad lifestyle by those living it themselves. The app also uses connectivity technology to make it even easier for you to find other remote workers, whether you need collaborators for work or companions for your next journey.

The app is available in beta form on both the Google Play and Apple App Store. Stay tuned to follow the progress as we continue to update the app’s features and tune it into the best tool a digital nomad has. Play store App store

Citizen Remote

Meetup, as the name suggests, is an app that will help you connect with a local community of like-minded people and other digital nomads. The app is easy to sign up for and navigate, and you can select your interests and favorite activities, so that algorithm can better suggest events for you.

There is no registration fee for this app. For groups with three organizers and up to 50 members, Meetup charges $14.99 per month or $19.99 per month with no limits. This is one of the apps for digital nomads that makes your life easier, especially if you are not comfortable making friends.

Play store App store

Meetup

WorkFrom is your personal cafe recommendation app, which will suggest remote workers-friendly coffee shops in your area. This is one of the best apps for digital nomads searching for a community, and our favorite feature is a virtual cafe, so you can stay connected even if you are working from your bedroom or another city.

You can sign up for free, but if you want to create virtual cafes for more people, there is a fee of $15 per month for a personal plan and $50 per month for a business plan. If you want a simple solution and a suggestion of where to go when you don’t know the area, this app is for you, available on the Apple store and Play store.

WorkFrom

Reddit is a unique place where you can find community online or connect to people in real life. Here you can find out anything by simply asking a question, and this is why so many digital nomads are using it to find the best cafes, coworking places, apartments, and more.

Gold membership costs $5.99 per month, which differs from a free account by eliminating the ads, although this app doesn’t have aggressive ads. Use this app to laugh at memes or find the best digital nomads communities.

Best Travel Apps

With travel apps, you can keep all the information, bookings, tickets, and more in one place. You can also search for the cheapest flights or monthly stays. These are necessary apps for digital nomads.

Airbnb is among the best apps for digital nomads when it comes to finding places to stay. This is because the stays offered are not hotels, but local apartments, usually owned by the locals. The best opinion you can use on this is to search for monthly stays, which makes listings cheaper.

Often this is the best way to find stays in cities where housing is an issue or if you need to stay for a short period and don’t want to have a lease. Use this app for more accessible findings of places to stay at affordable pricing.

Airbnb

Finding deals on flights is necessary for everyone traveling frequently. Flights can often be the most expensive part of your trip, but apps like Skyscanner are here to help us fight that battle. Skyscanner allows you to enter exact dates or choose to search per month, or even select the cheapest month if you want to see the best deals.

It doesn’t cost anything to sign up and use the app, even though payments are not processed through the app. Once you select the flight you want, it will redirect you to the airline website where you will book the flight. It allows you to search and find the best deals quickly and securely.

Skyscanner

Uber, like the other ride-sharing apps, is available in many countries. It is the most commonly used app for affordable rides and is easy to use even if you don’t speak the language.

There is no fee to sign up for the app, but you will be paying for rides in local currency. You can use your credit card or cash, but the rides will always be cheaper than if you take a taxi. Using Uber is an affordable and safe way to get around foreign cities.

Uber

Productivity Apps for Digital Nomads

When you change workspaces often, it is hard to concentrate. Having a routine works better for some people than constant changes; this is why productivity apps will help you.

With this excellent app, you will block distractions and focus better on your work. You can set a time when all your social media apps and websites are blocked or anything else that belongs to an online distraction, in your case. It helps you reset your focus when it goes to something else.

You can try this app for free and decide whether it works for you. You will get to choose monthly, yearly, or forever packages, which are $6.99 on a month-to-month basis, $2.42 a month if you choose the yearly package (paid at once for 12 months), or $129 for a forever package. Get this if you are willing to maximize your productivity hours and minimize distractions.

Freedom

Trello enables more efficient teamwork and increased productivity. Trello’s boards, lists, and cards give you a flexible, enjoyable method to organize and prioritize your projects. Trello cards can hold a lot of details and they are easily accessible by the entire team, making it easier and more efficient for everyone to be on the same page and perform their assigned tasks.

Although you can use Trello completely free as an individual or a small team in need of an organizational tool, some packages offer more options. The standard package is $5 per month, the premium is $10, and the enterprise is $17.50. Use this app if you want to boost the productivity and organization of your team.

Trello

This is one of the best apps for digital nomads you can use to organize your work, keep notes, and stay on top of your to-do list for the day. The best feature of this app is that it is easy to use and it syncs your devices.

If you want to connect more than two devices or include your family or coworkers in a plan you have options for $6.99 per month for a personal plan or $8.99 per month for a professional plan. If you need planning and good organization to stay productive, this app is for you.

Evernote

Money & Financial Planning Apps

Money and financial planning apps are crucial for digital nomads, not only because of currency exchange but also because many digital nomads are freelancers and need great tools to manage their money.

PayPal has long been the industry standard for digital nomads’ payment alternatives. You could convert your deposits into any currency you desired to cash them out. PayPal has a business account available as well and you can accept payments as a business too.

It is useful if you need to accept payments or issue invoices to clients from different countries. But there is a small fee that applies, approximately 1% to every withdrawal you make. However, there is no fee for having an account, so if you are not using it you are not getting charged. PayPal is excellent to have for international payments and safe shopping online.

PayPal

Wise, previously known as TransferWise, is long known as the cheapest way to send money abroad. It is used in over 60 countries, and the fees are minimal. You can also use their debit card when you travel, and not only will your withdrawals from the ATM be cheaper, but also your currency conversion.

When you order a debit card, you will be charged $9; for wire transfers, you will pay a $4.14 flat rate. Use Wise if you need a trusted, safe, affordable, and widely accepted card.

Wise

Similar to Wise, Revolut is one of the favorite digital nomad apps for money transfers, payments abroad, and online shopping. What is different is that with Revolut, you can also buy and sell cryptocurrency and stocks or open a savings account.

The standard plan is free and includes a free Revolut card, while the premium is $9.99, and the metal is $16.99. This is an excellent app if you are planning to use over 140 currencies and travel often or if you need to make international transfers.

Revolut

Health & Safety Apps

Often, health is suffering when we travel a lot, and apps dedicated to health are handy to digital nomads. Safety is also essential to be taken care of, especially if you are using WiFi in various locations.

Keep your passwords safe and secure with LastPass. The best features of this app are convenient because you don’t have to remember your passwords, instant online logging, and lengthier passwords that provide better security.

You can use LastPass as a browser extension or an app, which is covered with a free account. However, if you need more options and better command of your account, you can start a premium at $3 a month. Don’t ever forget your passwords again and lose time resetting them.

LastPass

This is one of the best-rated VPNs because it offers over 3000 servers in more than 94 countries. The pricing starts at only $6.67 per month, and also, when you sign up, they usually offer the first three months free.

It allows up to five accounts simultaneously to use it across your devices. Stay safe while surfing worldwide; you don’t want your trip ruined by hacks and stolen passwords.

ExpressVPN

Nike Training Club

It is easy to stop your routine workouts when you are on the move but to stay healthy and toned, you must exercise regularly. With NTC, you can target your abs, arms, shoulders, glutes, and legs with more than 200 free strength, endurance, yoga, and mobility exercises.

You can see and feel improvements during sessions that last 5 to 50 minutes. Free accounts offer a lot, but if you want to try premium, you can do it at $14.99 a month or $119,99 a year. Even if you are waiting at the airport or in your new Airbnb, you can squeeze in a short exercise to stay healthy on the go.

Nike Training Club

Apps for Content Creation on the Go

Content creation is a big part of digital nomad lives. You will appreciate some valuable tools even if you are creating content only for your page. But if you are creating content for the business, it will be even more helpful to you to discover these apps for digital nomads.

Canva is the best app you can use if you don’t know about graphic design. Choose a template, stock photos, and even what type of post you want to create, and within minutes your posts will be finished and look professional.

It is entirely customizable, and if you need it for work, the premium plan will be better than the free one, lacking in some high-quality stock shots and designs. Monthly you can pay $12.99 or opt for a yearly subscription of $119.99. You can use Canva for fun or work to create excellent designs quickly.

Canva

If you love using video, this app is for you. InShot is ideal for scaling your content to meet the size of social media and allowing you to speed up, add filters, and edit your video clip.

Although you can do a lot with a free account, you can take your editing to the next level with the paid plan. Choose $3.99 monthly, $14.99 yearly, or a one-time charge of $34.99 which will grant you lifetime access. This is a leading video editing app for mobile phones.

Digital Nomad Apps to Work Better On the Go

Duet - for an instant 2nd screen.

If you travel with a tablet and wish you had a second screen, this one is for you.

Duet lets you transform an iPad or an Android tablet into a second monitor, latency free and with the same native retina resolution of the device.

This is one of those apps for digital nomads that will make you reconsider owning a tablet . Even though we use our iPad for many things such as offline Netflix, mobile photo editing or music apps, it has made working so much easier for us with a second screen.

TripMode - For when you have a limited mobile data allowance

Some countries come with free wifi and unlimited data plans. Some just don’t. For the latter, TripMode allows you to monitor how much data you tether from your phone to your laptop when your allowance is limited . Yes, you can now prevent that unwanted iCloud sync to use all of your gigabytes , truly the best of the apps for digital nomads who have limited data allowance.

Speedify - For when internet sucks

While it’s also a VPN, Speedify is already worth purchasing for its channel bonding technology: it will merge two connections into a steady, reliable one . You won’t drop off in the middle of a call or an important file transfer if one of your connections fail. This digital nomad app lets you combine two or more connections such as wifi and tethered phone, two wifi hotspots and a wired connections or even two phones with different carriers for extreme remote settings.

Time Buddy - To setup online meeting and convert time zones

Quickly converting timezones is a skill you learn over time. Before you master this, Time Buddy is an app that makes life easier when it comes to visualize time zones and schedule meetings with different people across the globe . It’s available on both Apple and Android.

Workfrom - When in need of work friendly cafés

While we mostly work from home or an apartment rental, we occasionally find ourselves at cafés for an hour or two with our laptops.

In order to find these places, an app like Workfrom can be really useful, given that it’s being used in your area. It’s one of the best apps for digital nomads when looking for a good place to work in .

Some metropolitan areas have an abundance of cafés where it’s ok to bring your laptop (Ho Chi Minh City, Taipei, Paris or Seoul for instance). In other places, it might be more complicated to find a hidden gem and an app like Workfrom could come in handy and make your life easier.

The Must-Have Travel Apps for Digital Nomads

Google maps.

If we could only have 3 apps for digital nomads on our phone, Google Maps would certainly be one of them. While you may already know it as a GPS app, it’s a goldmine of information to discover new places such as parks, restaurants, sights, parking and more ! It really makes life easier!

We use it based on user ratings to find new spots when we can’t ask locals directly . The two best features: we can save offline maps and create our own maps and lists to share with others.

It is also a safety app as you are less likely to get scammed or harassed by showing that you know where you are going, be it on the street or in a cab.

XE Currency

Travelling often means having to deal with different currencies. One of the best apps for digital nomads to know that the airport conversion rate sucks is by having a conversion app such as XE Currency . You can instantly view up to 5 currencies for free. It’s a quick and easy way to have an idea of the relative value of goods and services in a new country.

Uber / Grab - Transportation on demand

When public transport is unreliable, non-existent or not convenient, transportation apps for digital nomads are the way to go. They have certain advantages compared to regular cabs, especially when travelling or living somewhere new.

  • Communication : The app does the translation for you, there is no need to worry about communicating with the driver and struggle with the destination or the payment . It doesn’t mean that you can’t be friendly and maybe leave a tip. A smile, a “hello” and “thank you” goes a long way!
  • Safety : Payment is usually handled by credit card or app balance and the amount is known in advance . The GPS shows you exactly where you go, which you can cross check with another navigation app if you want. The mutual rating system also lessens the risk of incidents. In short, you are more likely to have a pleasant ride.
  • Cost and features : Ride hailing apps are often (but not always) cheaper and more flexible than traditional cabs . They sometimes offer different options of vehicles according to your needs or even shared rides . Typically, you’ll need a car from the airport but a motorbike taxi (where available) will be enough to get around afterwards, given that you are a solo traveler. These apps also have additional features such as re-routing or adding multiple stops .

Depending on the country you are in, these transportation apps will be different. In Europe and the US, it would be Uber , while South East Asia is mostly using Grab , (or Go-Jek ). Some countries don’t allow ride hailing apps at all, other than the official registered taxis. Of course, countries with a developed public transport system rely way less on ride hailing apps.

Other Useful Apps for Digital Nomads

Alfred camera - never too careful.

Alfred Camera is a free surveillance camera app . We originally used it to monitor cats while we were away, but realized it could be helpful to keep an apartment rental or a hotel room safe . You simply need a spare phone plugged and connected to wifi to act as a free home security camera. One of those apps for digital nomads that you didn’t know you needed for that added security !

Tripcoin / Splitwise - Tracking expenses made easy

By living somewhere new, you want to make sure you don’t live beyond your means. It also makes it quite interesting to see in which place you spent the most and why.

Tripcoin lets you track expenses by category and you can set a currency depending on the “trip” sheet you create . Its geo-location feature helps you break down the cost of every country you were in .

If you travel with friends or your partner, we would suggest using Splitwise instead, which is what we have been using for the last 2 years. It functions similarly as Tripcoin but works better for bigger groups .

Conclusion: Best Apps for Digital Nomads

So there you have it! Our favorite apps for digital nomads, which are simply apps that make your life easier when you combine work and travel.

We hope they made you realize of certain issues that could arise before you embark on the nomadic journey, or maybe simply found new app additions to your existing lifestyle.

If you know of any other digital nomad apps that can help you work and travel better which we haven’t mentioned in this guide, don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below!

Taipei digital nomad: what you need to know + free maps, digital nomad philippines: makati is the best city for digital nomads, 14 thoughts on “10 best apps for digital nomads to work and travel better”.

This is super useful – so many apps that I did not even know of. I like the sound of Tripmode. That is something that most of us really need. And Duet as a second screen can even be useful when you are working from home. Alfred Camera – that seems like a complete safety booster. Am gonna try some of these out.

' data-src=

We are so glad this is useful to you! We don’t know about India, but we once rented an apartment without broadband in the Philippines. Since we relied on mobile data even at home, it was a must to not burn our data package within days!

' data-src=

I only use UBER and Google Maps on this list. I have used XE currency in the past but for the last 18 months, havent even touched a currency app as I am stuck on my island of the UK. Havent heard of the other apps so going to look into them, they sound like they can be pretty useful once travel resumes.

Thanks, Danik! We hope you’ll find a few of them useful when the time comes. While the travel apps can’t be used right now, the productivity apps are worth a shot, as many of us can work from home nowadays.

' data-src=

This was SO helpful, I had no idea these apps existed! Especially Duet, I’m going to use that nonstop now for my tablet. Definitely keeping this list!

Amazing, Chloe! It looks like you found a new purpose for your tablet that was laying around. You can really set up a mobile office anywhere with that 🙂

' data-src=

Duet and Workfrom seem very useful to me. This is actually a very effective list for digital nomads. I already use Uber for booking taxis and sometimes bikes in some countries, and also always Splitwise when traveling with friends as it helps me manage the accounts for all of us.

' data-src=

I’m not a digital nomad, and I guess that’s why I haven’t heard most of these apps. But I’m sure they are really useful. Your post made me smile a bit as you mentioned about Go-Jek. I’m originally from Indonesia so I heard a lot about it. Save a lot of lives.

' data-src=

This is such a great list!! I had no idea that there was something like Duet – so convenient! I would use that even at home. TripMode would also be useful. I tend to have my phone in airplane mode and only turn it on when I’m around wifi. Love this list!

' data-src=

Some of these apps I’ve been using for a long time, but with some of them I’m not acquainted at all. Like for instance Duet. I had no idea you can use an app for an instant second screen, so I’m glad I found out about it. Tripcoin I’ve heard about, but to be honest, I don’t really like to keep track of my expense when I travel. I breaks all the fun, doesn’t it?

' data-src=

This is such a useful list!! I haven’t used a lot of these apps to be frank and had not even heard of Workfrom – it sounds really cool and helpful even for consultants. I can totally vouch for Speedify, I used it during my trip in NZ (where network was pretty patchy in a lot of areas) and it was a life saver!

We are so glad you found Speedify so useful on your trip! So far we’ve only used it at home to merge different cell carriers but can’t wait to test it on the go. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

' data-src=

Wow thank you for this list. It is very useful especially now that I am looking for being a digital nomad. I already use some of the apps like currency exchanger, google maps and now I will download some of the other apps straight away and see how they work.

' data-src=

You should add https://www.punta.app/ to the list of top apps for digital nomads! It’s a great app to meet digital nomads that overlap with your travel plans before arriving.

Nomad review

Nomad is a digital eSIM marketplace that provides affordable prepaid data plans for travelers in over 170 countries worldwide.

Founded in 2020, Nomad has quickly become a popular eSIM provider thanks to its easy-to-use app, wide coverage, and competitive pricing.

Users praise the simplicity of purchasing and activating eSIMs through the Nomad app, the variety of data plans available for different countries and regions, and the affordable prices compared to roaming with domestic carriers. However, a few customers complain of occasional speed and setup issues.

Nomad: Plans and pricing

Nomad’s pricing structure is based on the amount of data and duration of the plan, with rates starting from as low as $1.20/GB in some regions. Here’s an overview of the most popular ones:

A wide range of country-specific and regional plans caters to various travel needs and budgets. However, purchasing a local SIM can sometimes be a cheaper solution than Nomad for some regions.

Nomad: Features

Our experience with Nomad eSIM has been largely positive, with several standout features that set it apart from other providers.

Nomad Passport

Nomad's Passport feature allows users to purchase a bundle of eSIMs for multiple countries at a discounted price. This is useful for travelers visiting several destinations on a single trip, as it eliminates the need to purchase individual plans for each country.

Multi-device Support

Nomad enables users to share their eSIM data plans across multiple devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. This feature is especially convenient for travelers who rely on various devices to stay connected and productive on the go.

Nomad Perks

Nomad offers exclusive perks and discounts to its users, including deals on travel services, accommodation, and tours. These perks add value to the eSIM plans, enhancing the overall travel experience for customers.

Nomad: Installation

Purchasing and activating a Nomad eSIM is a straightforward process. Users can buy eSIM plans directly from Nomad's website or through their user-friendly iOS and Android apps. Upon purchase, an email containing a QR code with installation details is sent to the user.

Users scan the provided QR code with their eSIM-compatible device, which automatically downloads and installs the carrier profile. Once installed, eSIMs can be activated with a few taps in the device's settings.

Once the eSIM has been installed, you can activate the data plan whenever you’re ready to begin using the eSIM, which is usually after you’ve entered the region which you purchased the data plan for. Note that premature activation can cause data loss, so it’s best to activate the plan very close to the travel date.

First-time users will appreciate the step-by-step onboarding guidance provided by Nomad. Plus, the company's responsive customer support is available round the clock to assist with any issues.

Nomad: Coverage and speed

Nomad eSIMs offer extensive coverage in over 170 countries worldwide, making them a reliable choice for frequent travelers. Users report generally good connectivity and network reliability across various regions, including Asia, Europe, and North America. A few popular travel destinations it covers include:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • South Korea

In terms of data speeds, Nomad typically provides 4G/LTE or even 5G speeds, depending on the destination and local network conditions. However, some users have reported occasional slowdowns or throttling issues in certain areas, such as during peak hours in Tokyo. However, these instances seem to be relatively rare, with most users experiencing satisfactory speeds throughout.

Overall, Nomad stacks up well against competitors, offering a balance of coverage, speed, and affordability that caters to the needs of international travelers.

Nomad: Support

Nomad offers customer support primarily through emails, plus a ticketing system accessible via their website and mobile app.

While there’s no phone support, users can submit detailed requests and receive prompt assistance from the support team. Nomad's customer support is generally responsive and helpful. Many users praise the quick response times, often within minutes, especially when using their ticketing platform.

Even the few negative reviews we found mention that despite the technical hiccups, Nomad's customer service was prompt and accommodating in finding a solution. It's also worth noting that Nomad's support is available 24/7 across all time zones.

Based on our own experience and user reviews, the support team seems to know the product well, with enough experience to guide users through setup, troubleshooting, and pricing queries.

Nomad: Final verdict

After thoroughly analyzing its offerings, coverage, pricing, and user reviews, we can confidently say that Nomad is a strong contender in the eSIM market.

Nomad's eSIM plans are particularly well-suited for frequent travelers, digital nomads, and those visiting multiple countries on a single trip. The Nomad Passport, which allows users to purchase a bundle of eSIMs for different countries at a discounted price, is a highlight we loved.

While some users have reported occasional issues with speeds or connectivity, these are relatively infrequent and often resolved quickly by the support team.

Nomad: FAQs

Is nomad esim good for usa.

Yes, Nomad is a good option for travelers visiting the US. It offers affordable data plans for the US starting at $1.40/GB. Plus, it operates on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks, which offer reliable coverage throughout the United States.

Is Nomad better than Airalo?

Nomad and Airalo both offer eSIM plans for a wide range of countries worldwide. Nomad provides better individual country plans compared to Airalo, but the price differences are usually negligible. Since experiences can differ by region, there’s no one answer for whether one provider is better than the other.

Who is behind Nomad eSIM?

Nomad has been developed by a company called LotusFlare. In fact, the entire eSIM marketplace rests on the SaaS component of the LotusFlare DNO Cloud.

HONEST Review Nomad eSim – Is It Any Good (UPDATED 2024)

It may not seem that long ago, but when we first started travelling just over one decade ago, we didn’t really use our mobile phones that much.

Instead, we used (digital) cameras for taking pictures, paper maps for navigation and moronic gestures for communicating across language barriers… Ok, so some things we still do from time to time! But wow how times have changed!

Flash forward 12 years and smartphones are an integral part of our, and your travel reality. Whether you like it or not, the fact is that modern travellers often  need  their phones for things like boarding passes, travel banking and making bookings.

However, using your phone overseas can be, erm, complicated. Roaming charges can be seriously expensive and there are plenty of anecdotes of unwitting travellers racking up hundreds of dollars in bills! Ouch! Then there is nothing on earth more annoying than losing your internet connection just as your Uber or Grab is approaching.

Thankfully though, a new, innovative and rather brilliant solution is upon us. In this post, we are going to take a look at how an  eSim  works and how an exciting app called  Nomad  can help you to get the most out of it.

Pssst!! – If you decide you want to try Nomad for yourself, then use the special discount code of BACKPACKNOMAD at the checkout stage to save money on your first Nomad purchase.

Staying Connected When Travelling

As we touched upon in the intro, using your phone when travelling isn’t exactly straightforward, but, it is a necessary part of travel these days. Most of us have sim cards issued in our home countries and whether you are locked into a contract with a provider or on a pay-as-you-go model, most sim deals have one thing in common – they only work domestically. That is why we need to take the time to find a good travel sim .

nomad travel app

It is quite eerie how true this is. If you have ever visited Tijuana from San Diego, then you may note that your US sim card stops working the second you cross the border. Wild!

There are of course a few exceptions here and there. Sim cards issued in any EU country work seamlessly across the entire block and a few North American carriers work both sides of the US/Canada border.

However, for the most part, our sim cards stop working the minute we land in or step into a new country. If the sim does still work, then high roaming charges will burn through our credit in a matter of hours or rack up a bill high enough to ruin your trip and add insult to injury when you arrive back home!

  • International Sim Cards

There are some international sim card providers out there offering cards that work all over the world, or in certain regions (ie, all of Europe). However, these tend to be expensive and are only really suitable for frequent travellers.

  • Plastic Sims

With that in mind, for the last few years the ‘ done thing ’ has been to pick up a local sim upon arrival at our destination. In the case of getting a sim in Israel or Hong Kong, this was quick and painless but in India, it could take days of frustration to get sorted.

Buying local sim cards every time we travel to a new country was never an ideal solution. As I said, in a lot of destinations it was quite tricky to do, and of course, all of that disposable plastic took its toll on the environment .

REI is one of America’s biggest and most-loved outdoor gear retailers.

Now, for just $30, get a lifetime membership that entitles you to 10% OFF on most items, access to their trade-in scheme and discount rentals .

Thankfully, technology is coming to the rescue to save the day. Most current-generation phones are built with eSim capacity installed in a step to move away from plastic sim cards once and for all.

You might be wondering what is an eSim ? Or how do I use one? Well, you’ve come to the right place. A phone user simply has to download and install the relevant package on their device and activate it (like they would with any other sim) and then it works like any other sim.

Smartphone camera comparison

This innovation is particularly exciting for travellers as it means we can now download the best eSim packages from pretty much all over the world from the comfort of our handsets before we travel.

This means we can compare packages and can get our foreign sim set up and ready to use before we even leave home meaning we can start using our phones the second we land at the airport! For example, if you’re looking for a sim in Italy , there is no more queuing at the phone kiosk in the airport, no more plastic and no more stress!

However, note that relatively few devices in circulation are not eSim ready. Whilst Apple models from the iPhone 11 onwards are eSim capable, the 8 and the 10 are not.

Choosing an eSim Package

There is still a debate about whether you should buy local vs an international sim card . Most network providers are now muscling into the eSim market. However, when you are visiting a strange new country, the chances are that you don’t know much about the local carriers and as such won’t know where to start when looking for a sim.

This is where Nomad comes in, they are one of the best eSIMs for travel right now.

Introducing Nomad

nomad travel app

Nomad is a digital eSIM marketplace that connects global travellers with affordable data plans anywhere in the world, without the need for a plastic SIM.

In order to use Nomad, users can simply browse the Nomad website’s eStore and look for suitable eSim packages. However, users will get a better browsing experience if they download the Nomad app onto their device instead and this is exactly what we did when using Nomad.

Just remember that either way, Nomad will only work on devices that are eSim compatible.

For us, the main advantage of Nomad is that they offer a number of different sim packages for pretty much every country on earth. In short, whether you need an eSim in Mexico to search for those golden sand beaches or to hunt down the best Pad Thai in Thailand, Nomad has you covered.

This makes it ideal for frequent travellers and backpackers who visit a large number of countries – you just need to download Nomad once then you are good to go wherever you’re headed.

Note: Nomad doesn’t actually provide the sim package – they merely facilitate it.

The main drawback that I experienced with Nomad is that a lot of packages are data only and do not come with a local number – this may or may not be an issue for you but it’s something you should bear in mind.

Using Nomad in India – An Honest Review

We recently tested Nomad for ourselves on a trip to Goa in South India. Now, let me tell you that getting a Sim card in India is a colossal pain in the arse and takes multiple visits to the phone store over the course of a few days and so I was delighted to learn that there is an easier way to get connected. However, I have an iPhone 8 and so cannot use eSim so instead, I got my girlfriend to test it on her iPhone 11.

Finding the Nomad app on the iTunes store was easy and it was downloaded and ready to roll within minutes. From the app, we searched for eSim packages for India.

Ganesh festival in india

Nomads Packages

The Nomad app showed us 3 different eSim packages all provided by Bharti Airtel, which is a popular and high-quality Indian network.

The packages ranged from 1GB for 7 days to 15GB for 30 days which should cover most trips to India.

The prices of the packages range from $5 to $30 which I have to say, is VERY expensive for data in India. By comparison, my sim package costs me about $5 per month for 2GB of data per day plus calls.

Still, for anybody who is not willing or able to get to an Indian phone store and spend 2- 3 days waiting for sim activation, it’s an option and for an isolated trip isn’t too bad.

No Numero?!

I also noted that the package does not come with a phone number – it is a data-only package.

Normally, this would not be a huge problem but in India, a lot of people and businesses still rely on traditional telecommunications such as phone calls and texts – for example, our landlord does not have WhatsApp and the only way to call them is using a proper phone.

This is of course less of an issue compared with getting a sim card in Europe and more developed, tech-savvy countries. It’s also probably not as much of an issue if you’re just on holiday rather than spending a few months here like we are.

We also understand that Nomad is working on this and it is quite possible that by the time you are reading this, Nomad packages do come with phone numbers, call minutes and SMS text allowances.

Nomads Coverage

Once we’d downloaded and activated the eSim we hit a bit of an anticlimax as the eSim struggled to find any network and could not connect. To be fair, we live out in the sticks in Goa and a lot of carriers don’t cover the area at all.

By comparison, my plastic VI Sim usually gets about a measly 1 bar of signal out here (we have Wi-Fi in the house). Still, 1 bar is infinitely better than 0, and as such Nomad was not making a positive initial impression.

When we left the house and went through town towards the beach in Ashvem, things did improve a bit and my girlfriend was able to get online, tune into WhatsApp and download her daily fix of pornography!

Other Nomad Packages

Whilst inside the Nomad app we also decided to take a look at a few other packages to get a feel for what else is on offer.

My home country is the United Kingdom and with my sim card provider, I pay around £10 ($15) per month for a 5GB monthly allowance with unlimited texts and minutes. Therefore I was quite impressed to note that the Nomad app was showing 30 days, 3GB plans for $9.99; again this is a data-only package though.

Therefore whilst the Nomad offering for India was quite expensive, some of its packages are clearly much better value for money. So obviously it just depends on what deal Nomad can get with carriers in each country.

It’s not always plain sailing getting those golden bars of connection when you land in a new country. For example, getting a sim in China or Kazakstan can prove pretty challenging, trust me. So I was impressed to see that Nomad can offer packages in over 100+ countries.

Nomad Alternatives

As more travellers embrace the eSim phenomenon, competitors like Yesim and Airalo race to cater to for our need for global connectivity.

It’s smart to shop around, especially when it comes to finding the best eSIM plans . Right now, Nomad is still leading the pack, but there are some other big players and up-and-comers ready to shake things up. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Gigsky-branded

Founded in 2010, GigSky is a Palo Alto, California-based mobile technology company that provides e-SIM and SIM card data services to international travellers. Unlike many (maybe even most) other eSIM companies, GigSky are actually a Network Operator in their own right, and partners with over 400 other carriers worldwide. This means they have access to a lot more transistors than most other competitors ensuring stronger service and letter outage.

As well as offering excellent, well-priced data packages in over 190+ countries, they also offer a global sim package, a number of different regional sim packages and a one of a kind “Land + Sea” package making it one of the best sims for cruises .

While they don’t offer local phone numbers, you can still make and receive calls via WhatsApp, Signal, Skype or whatever using the general data allowances that come as part of their eSim packages.

We have tried a LOT of different sim companies and after a thorough review of GigSky , it is our top pick on account of their excellent coverage, fair prices and easy-to-use app. Of course, if they did offer local numbers that would be even better.

Looking to find your Digital Nomad Tribe?

Being surrounded by like-minded people is essential for Digital Nomads. Luckily there are places like Tribal Bali – a literal hub for remote workers, laptop lovers and entrepreneurs…

Staying at a digital nomad-friendly hostel is a really smart way to get more done whilst still enjoying the social life of backpacking… Mingle, share ideas, brainstorm, make connections and find your tribe – We highly recommend checking out Bali’s first purpose-built co-working hostel, Tribal Bali.

Final Thoughts on Nomad eSim

On balance, there are pros and cons to using Nomad.

It is a very efficient way to access a whole load of data packages for a large number of countries. I also truly love the fact that travellers can now download a package before they leave home and be connected the second they land. Something that from personal experience is so helpful, especially if you arrive too late for public transport.

Some of the packages are very reasonably priced, although others are certainly not.

The current lack of a phone number is an annoyance but not necessarily a deal-breaker – it all depends on your personal needs and I imagine for most people just spending a week or two in each country and then moving on, it’s probably not a huge deal.

Scotland mountain Bothy

The biggest downside we found with Nomad was that network coverage was quite limited compared to local sim providers. This is kinda to be expected considering that most packages are offered by Truphone which doesn’t have any on-the-ground presence or infrastructure and is presumably relying on partnerships with local carriers. This will hopefully improve over time as Nomad and Truphone make new partnerships but for now, users may be taking a bit of a gamble by putting their faith into the app.

Still, the app can be downloaded for free and is a very valuable addition to any self-respecting traveller’s smartphone. Those going out into the deep backcountry should instead consider something like a satellite phone .

Just remember to use the special discount code BACKPACKNOMAD at the checkout stage to get money off your first Nomad purchase.

So, have you used Nomad or an eSim before? What was your experience?

Not quite sure if Nomad is right for you? Check out the Spanish-based HolaFly which offers great deals not only in their home country but in over 100 other nations too.

Another option to consider is getting to use YeSim , one of the most established providers and use the discount code “International24” at check-out.

Great speed and lowest latency as they claim

I have been happy coustumer of Nomad from last four months. They provide 2 types of internet modem. I used both, both are good. Keep rising and serving us.

SCAM WIFI FAKE HOME INTERNET

The app doesn’t do anything but show you your locked you into payments They use Verizon 5G towers and TRIPLE(X3) THE COST before I changed to Verizon I had a router and it was nothing like they say It was extremely throttled, lost connection, no communication from the people in the app I’m 95% sure they’re Bots, it originally said it was 130 A MONTH! when I started it they charged me 150 MONTHLY and Only was able to use it for about a week before everything shut down they sent me a new Verizon 5G sim to try to fix it and I received 4 different SIM cards and none of which were even activated after that no communication was achieved. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SERVICE

Only worth it if there’s no other option

Customer service is awful, they cut my service in December but kept charging me even after they said it was cancelled. I got a new SIM card in the mail last month and was told it was a fix to get my Legacy account working again, which it did with a surprise 300 gb cap. Was told I needed to buy a new modem for unlimited which took 3 weeks to ship. If there was literally any other unlimited option you should choose that regardless of price
