How is it came to be…

Our aim is to provide our guests with something different – simple homey comforts at a reasonable price. We’ve created a small sanctuary on the edge of Karatu town where safari travellers can take a break from the dusty roads and enjoy fresh country cuisine, a cool garden environment and stellar Tanzanian hospitality.

All of our staff live in the nearby town and surrounding villages and you’ll find they are eager to please and about as friendly as anyone you’ll find anywhere. Your comfort and pleasure whilst you’re staying with us is our main concern.

• Accommodation

We have thirty-two cottages set throughout our lushly landscaped property. Ten rooms in five double cottages are located in our coffee garden. The rest of the rooms are located surrounding the pool area.

Our approach to food is simple and uncomplicated; we serve family favourites and recipes created by Reggie and his team. We source our fruit, vegetables, dairy products, eggs and meats locally to ensure that our ingredients are as fresh as possible. Our executive chef, Reggie Bayo is legendary in the area and has been doing what he does best for over twenty-seven years. If you have any dietary restrictions, requests or requirements, be sure to give us ample notice so that we can accommodate you.

Breakfast ~ Cereal, a selection of seasonal fruits, tea and coffee are on the buffet table. A waitperson will take your order for eggs, bacon and sausage. If you’d like to try some of our local porridge, just let us know.

Lunch ~ We serve our famous buffet lunch daily and once a week we feature African specialities. If you’ll be out on safari for lunchtime, you’ll depart with a specially prepared lunch box.

Dinner ~ Is served at the table. This is a five-course event starting with a starter followed by soup. You’ll then enjoy your main course, which could be pork medallions, roast chicken, beef fillet etc. accompanied by potatoes and at least two fresh vegetables. A fresh garden salad comes next followed by dessert with tea or coffee. Vegetarian entrées are prepared on request.

A popular stop on Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit, Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and the centerpiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). In addition to being a spectacular scenic phenomenon, the crater supports astonishing quantities of wildlife, including all the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino).

Accommodation at Ngorongoro is plentiful and it mostly falls into one of two broad geographic categories. Pride of place goes to a select handful of lodges and camps set right on the forested crater rim, but an increasingly varied choice can also be found around the town of Karatu, just outside the NCA’s eastern boundary.

Lodges on the crater rim offer the best views and are most convenient for morning game drives, but their counterparts around Karatu tend to be more affordable. Here are 10 of the best Ngorongoro safari lodges and camps, in approximate order of closeness to the crater floor.

Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp

Ideal for those who don’t want to retreat behind brick and mortar at the end of a day on safari, this luxurious Ngorongoro camp has an enchanted setting in an umbrella-thorn forest on the eastern crater rim. It’s a chilly location, true, but this is countered by a roaring campfire and the provision of gas heaters and electric blankets in the spacious tents. The location, a couple of kilometers inside the easterly Lemala Gate, is perfect for early morning game drives.

Like Sanctuary Ngorongoro, Lemala is an exclusive Ngorongoro camp set in a fairy-tale forest inside Lemala Gate. The nine tents here are truly massive (each one contains two queen-size beds) and they’re also fitted with gas heaters and 24-hour solar power. You’ll love the dining tent, which evokes safaris of old with its beautiful wood and leather furnishings.

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

Serena Hotels operates six different properties on Tanzania’s Northern circuit, and all deliver when it comes to location, quality and relative affordability. The Ngorongoro Serena is no exception, with its spacious, centrally heated rooms and memorable setting in a forested valley overlooking the crater. Logistically, this is the closest accommodation to the main western descent road to the crater floor, which gives it a definite edge when it comes to early morning game drives.

&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

The most striking feature of most lodges on Ngorongoro’s rim is the view over the crater floor. Not so at &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. True, this perfectly sited property, which started life as a hunting lodge in the 1930s, offers utterly unforgettable views. But it’s the playful Maasai-meets-Versailles architecture and decor, with its mix of baroque, classical, African and colonial touches, that makes it absolutely unique. What’s more, the crater is a constant visual presence throughout the lodge, at least when the highland mist permits, and game drives are led by some of Tanzania’s most knowledgeable guides.

&Beyond Ngorongoro Tours

Entamanu Ngorongoro

Nomad Tanzania operates some of the country’s most remote, luxurious and exclusive bush lodges. Entamanu Ngorongoro, the only accommodation situated on the northern crater rim, is a great example. The cottages here, newly built in 2023 and spread across two camps, are the last word in bush chic and also offer splendid views over the crater rim. But it is the isolated location, in an exclusive Maasai concession, that really sets this camp apart and allows it to provide the closest thing there is to a genuinely exclusive Ngorongoro safari experience.

The Highlands

There’s nothing formulaic about The Highlands. Built and managed by Asilia Africa, this exclusive Ngorongoro lodge has a wonderfully isolated location on the rim of the scenic Olmoti Crater, which lies in the northern NCA about an hour’s drive from Ngorongoro Crater. Accommodation is in eight stilted canvas-and-glass domed suites that offer sensational views over the forested walls of Olmoti Crater and are well insulated to offset the chilly highland climate.

This stately lodge bordering the NCA is notable for its gabled facades and whitewashed exteriors, which recall the Cape Dutch architectural style associated with South Africa’s Winelands. It has a commanding hilltop setting on a coffee estate and the characterful split-level cottages come with king-size beds, roaring fireplaces and old-fashioned bathtubs.

Set on a century-old coffee estate, Gibb’s Farm first opened its doors to tourists in the 1970s and has since evolved into the most luxurious lodge near Karatu. There’s a big focus on community involvement: activities and services include locally guided cultural tours, forest hikes and bird walks, while the spa offers traditional massages by a Maasai elder.

Although chain-owned lodges now dominate the Northern safari circuit, a few individually run holdouts still survive. A favorite among these is The Plantation Lodge, which has been owned and managed by the same welcoming German couple since the 1990s. Situated on the hills outside Karatu, this lodge absolutely oozes quality, from the stylish classic-contemporary decor to the swimming pool set in large flowering gardens. The exceptional cuisine is made from fresh produce grown on-site or sourced from local suppliers.

About Bougainvillea Safari Lodge

Retreat from the bump and trundle of a 4x4 at this fetching lodge, shielded by a lush tropical garden and full of locally-flavoured amenities. Built at a handy midway point between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, there is an impressive catalogue of wildlife to spot and culture to experience. The colourful, musical and often comical birdlife is on full display as you wander the well-groomed lawns and sip on iced cocktails by the pool. Not a bad place for a siesta, eh?

10 of the rooms are in double cottages so you might find they lack the same levels of privacy.

The property

The main hub is a large, stone-walled structure with a rustic bar and well-stocked 'house' of drinks. Just next door is a lounge full of leopard-print armchairs, and a dining room decorated with pots filled with signature bougainvillea bouquets. Whipped up by legendary Chef Reggie and his team, meals are a medley of family favourites and reinventions of the classics. Dinner is always a five-course affair and a lunchbox can easily be packed for a picnic under the trees. Across the lawns, there is a large and inviting pool, and for those tired feet, a massage room.

Tucked amongst the fan palms, there is a collection of 32 cottages with ochre-hued floors, fireplaces and enormous beds draped in heavy, plum comforters and mosquito netting. The bathrooms are functional more than anything, but they have a large shower and plenty of shelf space. Inside, the sitting area is decked out with rustic, rattan furniture and woven rugs, whilst the veranda has slouchy chairs for taking in the view over a morning cup of Tanzania's best beans.

Pick your preferred direction and drive. Choose from the epic wilds of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where there are incredible numbers of black rhino, black-maned lion and elephant, or the great, shimmering Lake Manyara. You could even make it a nighttime excursion to catch the more elusive cats and critters. Revel in the chance to meet members of the Hadzabe tribe and pick up hand-stitched items at the village of Mto wa Mbo, or truly keep it local with a wander across a coffee plantation or through the eye-catching markets of Karatu.

This is a little oasis right in the middle of town. The food service was wonderful and the room was beautiful. They also had a pool and lovely garden for relaxing.

The room was far better than I expected, plenty of food was offered, and it was good. Staff decent. The thing I didn’t like was we didn’t eat with our guide. I did pack up my plate at breakfast and went to where he was eating, but he should have been allowed to join us at the dinner table. I would have felt differently if I had my wife our girlfriend with me, but I felt Mosha was part of my team, and I would have liked him to join my son and I at dinner.

Bougainvillea Safari Lodge is located on the outskirts of Karatu town about midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater.

There are 32 cottages set throughout our lushly landscaped property. 10 rooms in five double cottages are located in the coffee garden. The rest of the rooms are located surrounding the pool area.

Each cozy room has mosquito-netted king or twin beds, dressing area, a fireplace, large bathroom with shower and a veranda from which one can enjoy the views of the lush tropical gardens. Triples are possible with prior notice and two of the cottages can be used as family suites, with connecting rooms.

AndBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge boasts three intimate camps. Two of the camps have 12 Suites and the other has 6 Suites.

Steeped in romance, each stilted, handcrafted banana thatch suite at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is adorned with graceful antiques and unforgettable opulence. Each Suite features include an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and huge shower, floor-to-ceiling windows, hairdryer, minibar, lounge area with fireplace, in-room safe, Wi-Fi, and verandah.

Bougainvillea Safari Lodge is located on the outskirts of Karatu town about midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. The lodge was started by  a local farmer and a chef  who saw the potential for budget-friendly accommodation in Karatu. The Lodge is ideal for  Guests on Budget  planning to Visit Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara.

Lodge Amenities

Bougainvillea Safari Lodge has 32 beautiful bungalows with beautiful gardens in the open landscape. In the middle of the garden is a sparkling blue swimming pool. There is also a smaller pool for children. The lodge has reception, small curio shop, bar, dining room and conference room (which can double as a second dining room when the lodge is busy) is all contained within the main building.

It is an exquisite retreat nestled in the heart of the African wilderness. Our aim is to provide our guests with something different – simple homey comforts at a reasonable price. We’ve created a small sanctuary on the edge of Karatu town where safari travellers can take a break from the dusty roads and enjoy fresh country cuisine, a cool garden environment and stellar Tanzanian hospitality.

We have thirty-two cottages set throughout our lushly landscaped property. Ten rooms in five double cottages are located in our coffee garden. The rest of the rooms are located surrounding the pool area.

Wildlife Viewing

We’re located near to some of the most amazing wildlife areas on the planet. The gate to the World Heritage Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about a 15-minute drive from the lodge. To the east and south lies Lake Manyara National Park, a jewel of a park lying on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Both areas are equally accessible for day trips.

Relax or Swim

Sometimes its best just to stay put! Our gorgeous gardens are a balm to the senses and the pool is just a few steps away if you fancy a dip.

Hiking and Walking

You can easily walk into town from the lodge to experience a bustling African community. There are plenty of shops and a local market to explore. If you fancy a stroll into the countryside that’s another possibility. One of the staff can escort you to a neighbouring coffee plantation or you can hike in the Ngorongoro Conservation area for a more strenuous outing.

We offer therapeutic massages (adjacent to the pool bar) to work out the kinks after a long day on the safari circuit.

Bird Watching

With about 1200 species of birds, Tanzania is one of the best places to watch our feathered friends. Even if you’re not a keen “twitcher” you’ll find it hard to resist marvelling at the colourful and sometimes comical avian visitors and residents at the lodge.

Cultural Activities

There is ample opportunity to visit some of the fascinating tribes nearby. You can visit the Iraqw, Hadzabe or Datogo communities. The interesting agricultural village of Mto wa Mbo is nearby too.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
