Welcome to the Virtual Model Room & Workshop Tour!

We are delighted to share an ongoing project to make the Nathanael Greene Herreshoff Model Room & Workshop Exhibit more accessible to our visitors, both in-person and online. Today we invite you to join us for a (virtual) guided tour of the Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection with HMM founder, naval architect, America's Cup Hall of Fame member, and grandson of Captain Nat, Halsey C. Herreshoff. You can start exploring right away by clicking on the model below, or scroll down for more information about the project and some tips on navigating.

About this Project

The tour includes almost 70 stops with more than 80 minutes of audio illustrated by more than 700 photos, plans and archival documents. There is no set order for the tour stops, but a "Welcome," "Conclusion," and introduction to each room can be found in the middle of the floor. If you are short on time, the stops highlighted in gold will take you through in about 20 minutes. If you are navigating with a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, be sure to click the "full screen" button in the lower right hand corner of the model for the best viewing experience.

This guided tour is both an oral history project and an exhibit overview. It does not, however, describe each of the more than 400 models in the Model Room and Workshop individually. If you would like to look up specific models, you can do so through the Herreshoff Catalogue Raisonné by clicking on individual models in the image on the left-hand side of the screen.

Why should you come see us in person?

• It’s a chance to be on campus and immerse yourself in the experience of what it’s like to be a Bridgewater student.  
• You’ll hear about college life directly from a current student, your tour guide.  
• You’ll see our classrooms , dining halls , library and a first-year residence hall room .

• A BSU tour gives you access to students , admissions staff , financial aid and other campus resources.

Student-Guided Tours

Join us for a student-guided tour, Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. or 3 p.m. The duration of the tour is about 90 minutes, spanning over 1.7 miles. You will have the opportunity to enter various academic buildings, as well as a residence hall with a model room.

Undergraduate Information Session and Tour

Undergraduate information sessions and tours, offered weekly on Friday mornings at 10 a.m. include a 30-minute information session presented by the Associate Dean of Admissions, followed by a 90-minute walking tour of campus with a student tour guide. The information session will provide insight on how BSU delivers an exceptional value as well as the admission application and review process.

Twilight Tours

Join us for an evening tour of campus. Campus walking tours are led by our student tour guides and give visitors an opportunity to see our entire campus and hear about BSU from a student's perspective. A tour takes approximately 90 minutes and will depart from the Welcome Center, 45 Plymouth Street.

Saturday and Holiday Campus Tours

We offer 90-minute student-guided tours on select Saturdays throughout the fall and spring semesters. These tours begin at 10 a.m. We also continue to provide tours on the majority of holidays throughout the academic year, times vary depending on the holiday.

Group Tours

We welcome requests for group visits of 10 or more students that are arranged by school counselors, community-based organizations, or college access/readiness programs. If you have less than 10 students, we ask that you register each student under a regular campus tour, instead of a group visit.

Group visits feature a 90-minute student-guided walking tour of campus that can be tailored to showcase the interests of the visiting students. We can also enhance your itinerary by arranging for an information session from admissions and/or a special department, and/or campus dining experience.

Once a request for a group visit is received, a representative from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will respond to confirm availability and discuss the details of your visit.

Visitors may be photographed or videoed for marketing purposes while on campus. If we are taking photos/videos during your visit and you don’t want to be involved, please tell our staff that you choose to opt out.

Residence Hall Tours

Our students provide walking tours of our residence hall and apartment communities to potential Aggies, their families, and visitors. Tours are accessible to wheel chair users.

Summer Residence Life Tours will take place from Monday May 20th - Friday August 2nd. Tour operations will close in respect to summer holidays on Wednesday June 19th and Thursday - Friday of July 4th - 5th.

You can register for Housing Tours NOW when creating your campus visit itinerary! Residence Hall Tours resume with the limited hours during the first week of classes. Normal hours of operation resume starting the second week of classes.

For Northside Residence Hall Tour , the balcony style model room space will not be shown due to summer renovations,. Our tour guides and staff are happy to answer any questions you may have to help you understand what the style is like if you are moving into one of these spaces.

Northside Residence Hall Tours 

Tours leave every hour on the hour, Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., with the last tour leaving at 4 p.m. Tours leave from the Tour Desk in Hullabaloo Hall, located across the courtyard from the Starbucks. You will see a model room of the following housing styles: Corridor, Modular, Ramp, Hullabaloo 4 person suite. Register for a Northside campus housing tour Tours will last approximately 1 hour.

Meet at Hullabaloo Hall’s Tour Desk in Building A of the hall. Please park in the University Center Parking Garage and walk approximately 15 minutes to Hullabaloo. 

Southside Residence Hall Tours 

Tours leave every 30 minutes from the Commons Office 102 next to the Community Learning Center. Monday – Friday, from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., with the last tour leaving at 4:30 p.m. You will see the Commons style that represents our four commons buildings connected to the community lobby, and a Southside Modular style model room.

Register for a Southside campus housing tour   Tours will last approximately 30 minutes.

Meet at the Common’s Lobby Tour Desk. Park in the University Center Parking or Central Garage, walk approximately 5-10 minutes to the Commons.

White Creek Apartment Tours

Tours leave every hour on the hour, Monday – Friday, from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., with the last tour leaving at 4 p.m. You will have a chance to go into a 2bedroom/1bath model unit, our tour guide will share more on other layouts. Register for a White Creek housing tour Tours will take approximately  30 minutes .

Visitors can park on the main campus and park in a public garage , take Aggie Spirit Bus #3 to White Creek stop #2. 

Pay-by-the-hour parking is available across the street from White Creek Community Center in Lot 122A, located east of the White Creek Apartments complex.

The Gardens Apartments Tours

The Gardens Apartments is one of our on-campus communities available to Texas A&M University students. To schedule a tour of the Gardens Apartments, please contact the Gardens Apartments Office at 979.845.2261.

Approximately 30 minutes. Meet at the Gardens Apartments Community Center. There is 30 minute parking available at The Gardens Community Center.

One of Sir John Soane’s final additions to his Museum, the Model Room contains a display of cork and plaster architectural models depicting some of the most famous monuments of the ancient world, as well as Soane’s own building projects.

Located in the Private Apartments, the Model Room is only accessible by joining one of our tours, either a Highlights and Private Apartments Tour , which covers the entire Museum, or one of our volunteer-led Private Apartments Tours.

A Grand Tour in Miniature Back to top

In 1776, the 23-year-old Soane, an architecture student at the Royal Academy, won the Royal Academy gold medal for his design for a Classical Triumphal Bridge. This would prove a pivotal moment in his life, leading to him receiving a bursary to embark on a Grand Tour, a trip across Europe that was something of a rite of passage amongst the British elite. Soane’s visits to the ruins of opulent Classical temples across Italy – Rome, Pompeii, and Paestum, to name a few – would provide inspirations for his designs throughout his career.

Later in life, Soane amassed a collection of architectural models of sites he visited on his Grand Tour, for the benefit of the pupils training as architects in his office, and for the students of architecture he taught at the Royal Academy. These models were assembled first in the attic of the Museum, before in 1834, just three years before his death, he arranged some of these models in the old bedroom of his late wife Elizabeth.

Cork Model of Pompeii Back to top

This sprawling topographic model, covering just under 8 square feet, depicts a section of the excavations at the Roman city of Pompeii. Famously buried beneath volcanic ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 72, Pompeii was a source of fascination to British architects seeking to revive the architecture of the Classical world.

Made by the model-maker Domenico Padiglione, the model depicts the southernmost segment of the Roman city as it was whilst still being excavated in the 19th century – the area covered by the model is only a small piece of the area excavated today. Visible on the model are the Grand Theatre, and the Quadriporticus, a large monumental structure thought to have been an exercise field. 

Temples at Paestum Back to top

Though an important source of Classical culture, Greece, then part of the Ottoman Empire, was largely off the map to Grand Tourists during Soane’s era. Architects such as Soane experienced the Greek-style Doric Temple primarily through Greek colonial settlements in Italy, such as the temples of Paestum. Paestum clearly fascinated Soane, who discussed the site in his lectures as a Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy, and owned a number of drawings of the site by Giovanni Battista Piranesi.  These cork models, again by Domenico Padiglione, uses the naturally weathered surface of cork to evoke the crumbling stone of the ancient ruins.

Plaster of Paris models by François Fouquet Back to top

In stark contrast to the crumbling cork of Padiglione’s models, these delicate and incredibly finely-detailed plaster of Paris models were constructed by the French master model-maker François Fouquet.

Where the cork models depict Classical ruins as they were in Soane’s day, the Fouquet models imagine how they may have looked in the ancient past. One of the models depicts a temple at Paestum, allowing direct contrast with the cork Padiglione models; a number of other famous buildings are also present, notably the Temple of Vesta at Tivoli, one of Soane’s favourite Roman buildings, topped with a rather fanciful pine cone.

Restoring the Model Room Back to top

Outside of the spaces protected by the Act of Parliament that created the Museum, and lived in by early Curators, the Private Apartments including the Model Room were gradually lost, converted into offices over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

From 2011 to 2016, a major conservation project restored the Private Apartments, including the Model Room, to how they were upon Soane’s death in 1837. Read more about the Opening up the Soane project.

Kids and adults gather at a Memorial Day parade to honor and celebrate veterans in South Portland. Sofia Aldinio/ Staff Photographer

BATH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at 200 Congress Ave. and concludes at Library Park and will be followed by a wreath-laying service at 11 a.m.

BERWICK 11 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at Berwick Town Hall/Sullivan Square and proceeds to Lord’s Cemetery by way of Wilson and Allen streets. After a ceremony there, the parade will continue down Saw Mill Hill Street with a pause at the Somersworth-Berwick Bridge for a brief memorial service for those lost at sea. The parade ends at Sullivan Square with a memorial service honoring area veterans.

BIDDEFORD-SACO Opening ceremony at 9:55 a.m. Monday at Saco City Hall. Parade starts at 10 a.m. from Saco City Hall and proceeds along Main Street and down York Hill into Biddeford, continues along Main Street, onto Alfred Street and finishes at Veteran’s Memorial Park with a closing ceremony at 10:45 a.m.

BRUNSWICK-TOPSHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Topsham Town Hall, pauses for observances while crossing the Brunswick-Topsham bridge, and concludes at the Brunswick Mall.

CAPE ELIZABETH 9 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at the middle school parking lot, turns right on Scott Dyer Road, right onto Route 77 and ends at the village green adjacent to the town hall. A brief ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the Village Green after the parade.

CUMBERLAND 8 a.m. Monday. Kids run at Greely High School followed by 5K Run and Remember race at 8:30 a.m. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at Mabel I. Wilson School and ends at the veterans’ monument in Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland Center, where a ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. Advertisement

FALMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from 65 Depot Road (Falmouth American Legion) to Pine Grove Park, where a ceremony will be held.

FREEPORT 9:30 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Holbrook Street, heads north on Main and makes a right onto School Street, then right onto Park Street, ending in Memorial Park. There will be a small ceremony in Memorial Park starting at 10 a.m.

GORHAM 11 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Village School (12 Robie St.) and ends at Eastern Cemetery on Johnson Road.

GRAY 11:30 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves the Russell School (8 Gray Park), proceeds to Shaker Road and continues to the Soldiers Monument at the intersection of Routes 26 and 3 for a wreath-laying ceremony. Parade continues north to the American Legion Post (15 Lewiston Road) for a closing ceremony.

LYMAN 1 p.m. Monday. Parade starts at Waterhouse Road/Mill Pond in Goodwins Mills and ends at the Lyman Town Hall on South Waterboro Road.

NEW GLOUCESTER 9 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves from Memorial Elementary School (86 Intervale Road) and heads down Intervale Road to Route 100/202 to Veterans Park for a memorial service. The parade will reconvene and go down Peacock Hill Road, then take a left on Gilmore Road. Advertisement

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 1 p.m. Monday. Parade starts at the corner of Ballpark Way and E. Emerson Cumming Boulevard and proceeds down Saco Avenue, Old Orchard Beach Street to First Street and ends at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

PORTLAND 2 p.m. Monday. The procession starts at Longfellow School (432 Stevens Ave.) and ends at Evergreen Cemetery for a commemoration ceremony.

SANFORD 10 a.m. Monday. The parade starts at the Sanford Armory (88 William Oscar Emery Drive), proceeds up Gowen Park Drive and ends at Central Park.

SCARBOROUGH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Scarborough High School, turns onto Route 114 and then Route 1, past town offices to the Maine Veterans Home and concludes with a ceremony there.

SOUTH PORTLAND 10:30 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Southern Maine Community College parking lot, proceeds down Broadway to the Veterans Monument for a short Memorial Day recognition service.

WELLS 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Wells High School (200 Sanford Road) and proceeds to Ocean View Cemetery for a ceremony and musical performances. Advertisement

WESTBROOK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds down Main Street and will be followed by a ceremony in Riverbank Park.

WINDHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Windham Town Hall and proceeds onto Route 202 toward Windham High School. At 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony in front of Windham’s Veterans Memorial Flagpole at Windham High School.

YARMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves from Yarmouth High School (286 West Elm St.) and proceeds to the Memorial Green at Town Hall for a ceremony.

YORK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts near St. Christopher’s Church (4 Barrell Lane) and proceeds down York Street to York Town Hall.
