milos 3 day itinerary sarakiniko inland aerial

Having decided to forego Mykonos when planning the  14 day Greek island hopping trip , I was seeking out an island that was popular but perhaps not quite as busy.  Milos popped up on my radar when I saw a photo of Kleftiko Beach and the bizarrely smooth rock of Sarakiniko.  I added it to the itinerary and it worked out really well.

Milos is an island that has a bit more pace to it compared to Folegandros and coming from there, we were recharged and ready to explore.  What you’ll find with this island is that there are so many unique pockets of areas to discover that are all so diverse and not at all what you’d expect in Greece.

The goals of this Greek Island itinerary is to supplement the high level breakdown of how we did our trip Greek island hopping across 14 days .  Use the full itinerary as the larger guide for how we went about going from island to island.  Also, don’t miss the comprehensive Greek Island travel guide  which will have an incredible amount of detail on everything you won’t find in a guide book or “top things to do” type of blog post.

Let’s jump into how to do Milos in 3 day including what to do in Milos, where to stay, where to eat, and more.

milos greece 3 day itinerary map

From your previous island, you’ll catch a ferry .  If like us where you’re coming from Folegandros, the ride will only take an hour.  Before you know it, you’ll be disembarking on Milos , an island blessed with astonishingly diverse beaches, otherworldly geology, wealth of good food, historical castles, and colourful fishing villages.

giannoulis hotel in adamas milos

The first step is to get settled into your hotel and for that I highly recommend staying in the harbour town of Adamas for convenience and proximity to restaurants and groceries.  Check into Giannoulis Hotel in what has to be one of our favourite properties of the entire trip.  As a heads up, this property is managed by a travel agency called Milos Accommodations so they’ll ask you to check-in there first.  I’ve marked this on the map as their instructions were extremely confusing.

I mention Milos Accommodations because they can also book anything else you need.  Since we didn’t have a specific car rental in mind, we asked about cars vs ATV’s.  Ultimately, ATV’s were the cheapest option and recommended by the local.  We also felt pretty comfortable at this point with all of the experience we gained in Folegandros.  The 170CC quad cost $75 EUR over 3 days (25 EUR a day).  We later learned that this was actually through Moto Christos if you’d like to work with them directly.  They offered drop off at Milos Accommodations and pick up from the hotel on our last day which is super convenient.

Your first day in Milos is all about the old city and its surrounding attractions.

You’ll no doubt be hungry so drive down to Klima .  On this road where Waze seemed to take us through a ton of narrow streets of Trypiti, I remember so glad we had an ATV because navigating those tight turns and side mirror to mirror alleyways were quite harrowing.

astakas restaurant in klima milos

When you arrive at the seaside fishing village of Klima, have lunch at Astakas which has one of the most picturesque views where the other side of Milos can be seen across the water and the pastel paint of the boat garage doors can be seen as well.

fishing village of klima

Take some time to walk over to the houses where fishermen keep their boats and some have even been converted to B&B’s and souvenir shops.  This is one of many villages where colours of the rainbow are splashed on these boathouse doors.  Klima is by far the easiest to explore, largest in terms of number of houses, and most approachable so definitely go nuts with the photos.

Up the hill are two attractions of archeological significance – the Catacombs and the Ancient Theatre.  Getting there is a bit tricky from Klima because there isn’t a direct road so you’ll have to drive back up to Trypiti and cut through local alleys before descending down the other side of the valley.

milos catacombs chamber

The Catacombs date back to the 1st and 5th century and are a well-preserved example of a communal burial site and Christian place of worship that is possibly larger than the one in Rome.  Currently Gallery Chamber A and B are available for visitors through periodic guided tours.  This is truly one of the most unique catacombs and has been ranked as one of the top three in the world .

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Address:  Trypiti, Milos 84800

Hours: Mon to Sun: 9AM — 6:45PM.  Closed on Tuesdays.

Price: 4 EUR for adults, 2 EUR for seniors, and free for EU students.

milos catacombs cost sign

Do they accept credit card?: Yes

Tips:

  • The tour is actually conducted by the staff that man the ticket booth who double as “security guards” and so when you’re guided into the burial chambers, you don’t get any official commentary.  That said, they are quite knowledgable and are willing to answer questions in English.

milos ancient theatre

From the parking lot for the Catacombs, you can walk up to the entrance of the trail that takes you down to the Ancient Theatre.  Along your walk, you’ll pass by ruins of what’s speculated to be the gates to the city that used to be here.  Eventually you’ll arrive at the theatre which is open access but you may see a set up for a local production.  This is a miniature version of the large Roman theatres you’ll see later in Athens.

Best of Milos Island Tour

If you’re looking for a guided tour of the island that includes a visit to Papafragas, Plaka, Klima, the catacombs, and more, take a look at this affordable full day (8 hour) experience.

BOOK THE TOUR

Ride around the villages of Trypiti , Pera Triovassalos , and Triovasalos to get a glimpse of where locals live and the practicality of the tightly woven neighbourhoods.

Eventually make your way to Plaka, the current capital of Milos.  Founded in 1800, this village spreads on all sides of the conical hill and is beautifully covered with traditional Cycladic whitewashed houses, coloured doors, balconies, narrow and winding stone streets, and lush flowers.

path from plaka to kastro castle

Plaka village is a bit of a tale of two sides as there are parts of the town that’s gentrified and made to be tourist friendly with shops, restaurants, lots of lighting, and that welcoming atmosphere but you’ll also find other areas that aren’t on the typical path and this is where you have real locals, abandoned homes, and structures that are in disrepair.  In that way, I love the collision of authentic living with the glossy finishes.

PARKING:  When coming to Plaka, look for the big lot labelled with the “P” sign.  This is your best bet for stress-free parking.  From here, you’ll be walking upwards.

plaka kastro aerial sunset

Start making your way up to the Kastro or “Venetian Castle”.  There are signs in place to guide you up there.  Eventually you’ll see the church standing above and it’s at this juncture that you’ll make a right towards the church.  Keep heading up and in no time you’ll be at the very top of Plaka.

There are very few ruins up here except a few stone walls.  It gets the name Venetian Castle from the 1204 to 1566 period when the Venetian Dukes of Naxos ruled the island.  While the ruins aren’t necessarily impressive, it’s the view from the top of this lava done that everyone comes for.

sunset view from kastro in plaka milos 3 day itinerary

From here, you get magnificent views of the Gulf of Milos and all the land below.  Sunset is a particular magical time here as you get a great shot of the white-domed church and Antimilos in the distance.

If you’re feeling the vibes here, you can certainly have in Plaka and I’d recommend Avli-Mil o s or Phatses .

Alternatively, for us since it was the off-season I made the call to actually head out of Plaka and make a beeline to Oh Hamos .

oh hamos gourounopoulo petimezato

Now Oh Hamos is something special.  Locals in Folegandros told us we had to come here and practically every review of Milos mentions it as well.  Located by the seaside and only 5 minutes from Adamas, this is a Greek taverna in the very traditional sense that is incredibly inviting, the setting warm and homely, the energy abuzz, the staff super friendly, and above all else, the food is created from homemade recipe and that extra ounce of love.

Coined Aegean cuisine, all of their menus are facsimiles of the original hand-written menu that was further hand-translated into many languages.  Their must-order items include their baked cheese and zucchini appetizer, Greek salads, and Melitzana “Boulouka” (stuffed aubergine), and especially their Gourounopoulo Petimezato (baked piglet).

Another thing to know is that their meats, cheeses, and vegetables are source from either their own farm or other locals.  They also local beers.

Lastly, if there is anything in the menu that really stands out, they also have recipes printed out to take home!

walking on sarakiniko beach

When I think about Milos, I think about how the landscape of the island is a rocky garden oasis.  As you move from corner to corner of Milos, you never see the same thing twice.

On the north-east corner of the island is the seaside village of Pollonia and another prominent area for visitors because of its calm waters, community built around the pretty inlet from the sea, an active fishing industry, tons of hotels, and excellent harbour-side restaurants.

pollonia pedestrian street

Once you park in the community lot, take a stroll along the beach and over to the pedestrian street which is flanked by restaurants on both sides.  You almost can’t go wrong with any of them but one to check out is called Enalion which has fresh local fish and seafood, vegetables from the family garden, an extensive wine list, and great service.

One thing you will notice here though is that it’s not quite like Naoussa in Paros.  It doesn’t have build up of a town with grids of shops and restaurants.  Instead, it’s much more chilled out and beyond that beach and the restaurants that surround it, there is not that much more to see since I’d say there are better and more dramatic beaches elsewhere.

kivotos ton gefseon shop

Before you go though, you have to visit Kivotos ton Gefseon .  You would have passed by it on your drive in but this is actually a bakery and restaurant.  You’ll be full from lunch but I urge you to head inside and check out their shop that’s a pantry full of goodies such as thyme honey, special olive oil, cheeses, spreads, and other herbs.  You also can’t leave without trying their homemade ice cream and Galaktoboureko (pastry with custard cream and vanilla).

Starting with Pollonia, you can now start to make your way back and hit some of the stellar highlights of Milos, some of which you won’t even believe.

papafragas beach channel

One is a place called Papafragas .  From what I understand, this refers to a general area of rocky coastline but what makes it incredibly unique are the two narrow inlets that exist here that make for a very different beaching experience.  Again, I’ve marked the two clearly on the trip planning map so you know where to find them.

The first is a very narrow channel of water that comes in.  The path to get down to the beach is a bit harrowing and is marked with all sorts of warning signs but we saw many make the attempt.  It’s walk hugs the cliff walls and then you have to take a spiral staircase carved out of rock down.  It’s not ridiculously dangerous but erosion and lack of handrails is something you have to be hyper-aware of.  Most of the water is shoulder high.  I wouldn’t say it’s a beach you’d want to spend all day in but it’s a fun to play in for 30 minutes.  If you walk around, you’ll also find a few caves carved out of the rock and also an awesome view of the Aegean.

second papafragas beach

The second Papafragas also has a narrow channel of water that comes in but is a bit larger and isn’t walled in like the first one.  There are considerably more people beaching out here since there’s more space and there’s no dangerous hike to get down.

Follow the north coast and you’ll start seeing a startling shift in the natural geology.  Jagged piercing rock give way to smoothed bone-white rock that undulate in mysterious ways.  Many have likened Sarakiniko Beach to the surface of the moon and in a very 70’s James Bond kind of way, I can see that.

milos tour ukraine

Sarakiniko Beach is unlike any one you’ve ever been to because of some of the obvious and not-obvious reasons.  Very apparent is the rocks’ smooth surface that takes over the landscape and sticks out like a sore thumb.  Some of it is very much like chalk.  Walk further in to where the beach is and you have similar features of Papafragas with the narrow channel of water coming in but the beach part seems to be more of an accessory because most beach-goers end up setting up on the rock and jumping off different platforms.  Lastly, you walk further inland on the sand and you find a full network of pirates’ chambers land tunnel systems cut out of stone.

On a calm and sunny day, the beach is a great spot to be and many locals’ and visitors’ favourite on the island but if it gets windy like how it did for us, it’s really hard to enjoy because the sand kicks up and gets all over the place.  Still, it’s worth it to take photos from here with so many different angles to play with.

firopatamos fishing village sunset

Before heading for sunset and dinner, there’s one more thing you can squeeze in.  Hop on your ATV or car and head over to the seaside fishing village of Firopatamos .  It’s a very small village but what you come here for are the colourful boathouses, its beach, picture perfect church, and ancient ruins that has a doorway that looks out to the water.

DRIVING TO FOURKOVOUNI:  After Firapatamos, we thought we could drive to Fourkovouni to see another fishing village and according to Google Maps it looked like there was a road but in reality, once you’re out there, the route takes you through roads that eventually disappear or are reshaped in a different path that made things really confusing.  Passing through large do-not-enter open-pit mines also made us a bit nervous so we ended up turning back.

mandrakia milos fishing village in milos greece

As the sun starts to set, ride over to the village of Mandrakia which I argue is the most beautiful of the rainbow coloured fishing villages.  The mini-harbour is protected the larger currents of the sea and surrounding it are the the docks of fishermen and their equally small watercraft to match the scene.  At sunset, this spot was one of my favourites.

medusa mandrakia milos

For dinner, eat at the highly rated Medusa, a seaside restaurant touted for its seafood and views of the turquoise waters and volcanic coastline.  Every visit here is a culinary adventure with crisp salads, classics like fried zucchini, freshly caught swordfish, and blackened calamari.  During low-season it is easy to walk in but during high season expect a crowded scene so come here early for dinner.

tsigrado beach sail boats

One of the things that you might notice is missing is the standard boat tour around Milos that most have on their itinerary.  This is a popular way to see the island because the left half of Milos is mostly protected lands and not driveable.  As a result, many of the nicer beaches and the Kleftiko Caves can only be reached by water.

The reason for this is that in the month of June, there’s a high chance of wind and choppy waters and so many boat cruises were either cancelled or on standby.  Instead of risking seasickness, we opted for a more chill route where we could still see an interesting beach.

adamas town in milos

To start off your day, spend some time in the town that you’re living in which in our case was Adamas .  This thriving port city is the centre of commerce and where you’ll find souvenir shops, boutiques, tons of restaurants and a great harbour view.  Walk around and use the morning to explore.  Along the way, grab yummy bread and pastries at Artemis Bakery .

For the afternoon, drive down to a new part of the island you haven’t seen yet, the south.

entrance to tsigrado beach

Tsigrado Beach is a small sandy cove surrounded by rocky cliffs that really makes you work for it.  When you get to the entrance, you’ll see rope tied to a metal pole, a wooden ladder, and a long and narrow red rock canyon that heads downwards.  This one is more challenging than others because there are no instructions and just figuring out how to get down is a bit of a puzzle.

climb down to tsigrado beach

I recommend that you watch a few folks head down first.  To go down, the key is to leverage the right slot to head down without using the rope.  When coming back up, you’ll want to use the rope to pull yourself up and you’ll come up from the left slot if you’re referencing the photo above.

Even once you’re down the first ladder, there’s a passage way you have to squeeze through before there’s the final big ladder to make it down to the beach.

WARNING:   This is not recommended for anyone that isn’t physically fit.  Good footwear is recommended and be careful of scraping against the rock.  Also, you’ll be peppered with sand throughout the passageway so be prepared.

tsigrado beach ladder

Once you get down, you’ll realize why it’s so popular and what makes it so awesome.  First, the setting that Tsigrado is in is just something you can’t make up.  The challenge of getting down plus the beautiful exposed rock cliffs that you’re flanked with set the scene.  From there you have the caves that you can swim to and through on both sides.  There’s a small rock that sticks out of the super clear water that you can swim to and jump off of if you want. Then you have the sand which is surprisingly clean for a beach that isn’t maintained.

tsigrado beach milos looking in

Periodically yachts and catamarans will anchor just out of reach in the water but generally they don’t really swim all the way to the beach.  One thing to note is that the beach does fill up so it’s not like Folegandros where you’ll have this all to yourself but this is really the case for most beaches in Milos.

climb back up from tsigrado beach

When you’ve had your fill of Tsigrado and want to move on or just had enough of the sand that does fall down from above, make your way back up which is much easier than on the way down.  The final step will take a bit of strength though as you’ll be using the rope to pull yourself up while pushing off on the rock face on either side to you.

Drive a short distance to the neighbouring Firiplaka Beach , the family-version of beaches in this area.  It’s easy to walk down to, quite expansive, and even has a toilet in the carpark area.  It’s a super relaxed beach where there’s plenty of space to go around for everyone that comes here.  At the same time, it’s not as boring as you might think it is.

firiplaka beach in milos

What makes it unique are the rocks that you’ll find there.  Let me explain.  First are the two rocks that lean on each other in water about halfway through which can be lots of fun for kids to play here because the water is so shallow at this beach.  If you go all the way to the back end of the beach, you’ll see pastel pink, yellow, and orange rock on the cliff which makes great for an impromptu photoshoot.  Lastly, if you’re into looking for interesting rocks of all colours, the beach is littered with them.

o zygos tzaziki

To close out your last day in Milos and the Greek Islands, head back home to get cleaned up and have an enjoyable evening having dinner at a local restaurant such as O Zygos and one final stroll through of town.

You’ve had 12 incredible days on the Western Cyclades of the Greek Islands and alas its finally time to head back to the mainland.

With your bags packed, walk down to the port and if you’re hungry, grab something to eat at one of the restaurants across to the waiting area.  Otherwise, you can find something to eat on the boat.

From here, I hand it over to the final guide which is a 2 day itinerary of Athens  which we kick started once we arrived back in Athens from Milos.

Read the full Athens 2 day itinerary

This is the perfect itinerary for those that want to plan some time in the capital either before or after their island hopping and might not necessarily have too many days to work with.

2 Day Athens Itinerary

Milos has quite a number of accommodations that are spaced out on all corners of the island.  There are the beach areas to the south, fishing villages and small towns, the old town of Plaka, the chill area of Pollonia, and of course the port village of Adamas.

For us, the line of thinking was that we wanted to be central and since Adamas looked like a pretty decent place that would put us close to all of the stores and supplies, popular restaurants, and walking distance to our ferry, it just seemed to logistically make more sense

Review of Giannoulis Hotel

giannouls hotel milos living space with couch

Ultimately we landed on Giannoulis Hotel .  What was unique about this property is that it’s not really a hotel.  Yes they kind of have a reception desk on the main floor but it’s really more of an apartment rental than anything.  The other unique thing here is that they’re run by a property management company called Milos Accommodations.

As a result, the check-in process is a little confusing where you still have to go to their offices first, wait for the word that the room is ready, and then walk your way up to the property which is located near the end of the primary development along the main street that runs up and down through Adamas.

It was a bit of a jarring experience but we learned that in this particular case, many Greek owners just aren’t digitally savvy nor do they speak English so they act as an intermediary.

Throughout our entire trip to Greece, this was the largest and most spacious room we had.  With wood beams running above and traditional Cycladic white painted concrete, we loved how this was one open concept with a wall that separated the living space from the bed.

Inside is a mini-kitchen with fridge.  While we didn’t cook, it was nice to have cups, utensils, kettle, and plates for our breakfasts.

The living space was outfitted with a large couch, coffee table and desk for my laptop.  Again, the TV was a tiny one on the desk but we never turned it on.

The bathroom was large and clean, and it was nice that we didn’t have to worry about a hot water tank.

Wifi was ok but I did notice random drop-offs in the evening.  Each suite has its own router and so I often mitigated this by changing to other access points.

Lastly, there’s also a balcony here that overlooks the street so that was a great place to dry our clothes or have an impromptu meal.

The Location

Giannoulis Hotel is located in a super convenient place.  It’s in Adamas and walking distance to the village without being in the middle of it.

Being in Adamas means that you’re minutes away from good restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and services so you never really have to plan around going to Adamas during the day to restock because you know that you’ll always start and end your day there.

The property has its own parking spaces which is great if you plan on renting a car or ATV.

The Service

Being more of an apartment than a hotel, there’s no cleaning during your stay but I am sure that you can request it if you need it.

In terms of checking in, everything was done through the Milos Accommodations office which is also in Adamas.  When we arrived, we actually had to wait a little because our room wasn’t ready but they allowed us to leave our bags at the office and walk around.

Milos Accommodations also helped us book our ATV as well.  They called a few places to find out prices for us and we eventually landed on Moto Christos which had the cheapest price.

When we had a question for the front desk at Giannoulis Hotel, they couldn’t really understand our English and so they ended up calling Milos Accommodations where we spoke to their staff instead.

milos kleftiko sailing excursio

As you go through the itinerary, there’s a huge piece missing from it and that would be the sailing trip out to Kleftiko and the other beaches on the western side of the island.  That wasn’t our intention but because the days we were there were quite windy, many of the boat trips were cancelled or rescheduled.

I definitely would have loved to have seen the pirate cove that at certain angles almost looks like there’s a circular opening to the sky.  It’s a trip that would’ve exposed us to what the landscape is like on the protected side of Milos.

If we could, we would’ve done one of these sailing excursions:

  • Kleftiko Full Day Sailing Cruise with Snorkeling & Lunch – Perfect yacht sailing trip for those that want to leave from the Adamantas Port.  You’ll visit several beaches along the way and the hideout of Kleftiko.
  • Milos Sailing Tour with Snorkeling and Lunch – One of the most popular tours and a great way to see the coastline from a luxury catamaran.  Includes a snorkel safari, breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and snacks.  Ideal for families and leaves from Pollonia.
  • Poliegos, Firligos and Kleftiko Caves Full Day Cruise – This is a full day catamaran cruise that takes you two 3 beaches that are not easy to get to.  This leaves from Pollonia.

The below is a mini travel-guide for the island as a companion to this Milos 3 day itinerary.  It may not have all the details about travel through the Greek Islands so to make sure you don’t miss anything, read the comprehensive travel guide .

Money – In Milos and Greece in general, I always recommend carrying Euros in your pocket.  While there are many places that do take credit card (most restaurants, hotels, and larger stores), there are still many situations where it’s advantageous or necessary to have cash.  For us, we found that we were always trying to break change as well because you just never knew when you had to tip.  Even if you’re using a credit card machine at a restaurant, many don’t have the tip option enabled so you’ll still have to leave coins on the table.

Tipping –  The general rule of thumb for tipping in Greece is 10%.  In the case of taxis, don’t feel the need to tip extra because they’re handling your luggage, this is usually already added to your rate.  For hotels, 1 to 2 EUR per day is the norm.

Ferry – Milos is part of a cluster of islands in the Western Cyclades that falls under a very specific ferry route.  If you end up following my itinerary, your best bet would be with SeaJets and the NaxosJet  which covers a majority of the islands you’d want to go to.  The easiest way to find out what’s possible is to use FerryHopper to do a search and you’ll see exactly what works for your dates.

When it comes to making ferry reservations , I always recommend doing it as soon as possible even if you’re going during low-season.  This is one of those things you’d rather not let go to chance.

Use this Ferry Planning Tool

FerryHopper allows you to find out what ferry companies are operating to and from Santorini. We recommend using this to help with trip planning.

Car vs ATV:  When we arrived at Milos, we thought we’d go for a car rental but when we were comparing prices, the ATV was cheaper and since we had gained the confidence of driving in Milos, we felt pretty comfortable and the guy at Milos Accommodations said that the ATV would be more convenient.  That said, we did find that the roads were much busier here than in Folegandros so the extra experience definitely helped especially in a couple instances we had to drive at night.  When we were driving through the tiny streets of Trypiti and navigating really sharp turns, we understood why Milos Accommodations recommended having an ATV instead of a car.

Zones of no insurance coverage for cars:  A unique thing about Milos is that half of the island is protected and off-limits cars despite having dirt roads.  This is strictly enforced by car rental companies because there are drawn lines of where the car is covered by insurance and where it isn’t and effectively “drive at your own risk”.  Most rental companies will warn you against driving to the west where there’s no insurance coverage if your car breaks down.  Some also have areas of the far east covered off as “no service” which means going to the Old Sulfur Mines at Paliorema are also considered to be off-limits.  If you plan on doing any of these areas, a 4×4 is almost mandatory because of the off-road and presence of large rocks.

Taxi:  If you need to take a taxi when you arrive in Milos, there is a small fleet of them on the island.  To give you an idea of the fare, it costs 15 EUR from Adamas to Pollonia.

Bus:  Come to think of it, we didn’t see any buses during our time in Milos but I am sure they were around.  With how expansive Milos is, I am not sure I would recommend this mode of transportation but if you are looking to take the bus, you can find out more information about them here .

When is the best time? – This applies to all of the Greek Islands.  The best time to go is in the summer season since a lot of things closed in the off-season and the weather isn’t the best.  Best months are May – June and September – October.

Beaches:   Milos has over 75 beaches, some of which are difficult to access on the west and others that you can drive to.  They vary from golden sandy to rocky and raw.  What makes Milos a great place is that you can have a completely different beach experience day to day.  One thing to note is the wind direction for the day because that can have an impact on where you want to be.

Getting here – Milos has an airport with code MLO and is located 5KM southeast of Adamas and is primarily serviced by the region carriers Olympia Air and Sky Express.  The tried and true way to get here is by ferry.  Again, use FerryHopper to check which ferries fit your schedule.

Where should I stay? – We did almost all of our hotel reservations through  Booking.com and it’s because they have such a good inventory of properties that range from hotels, hostels, guesthouses, and resorts.  I love that cancellation is easy for most properties and the booking management is seamless.  Plus, if you get up to Genius Level 2, you can save up to 15% off on top.  As an alternative, there’s also Agoda and Airbnb .

Do I need travel insurance? – As always, travel insurance is highly recommended.  My philosophy is that you want to make sure you’re covered in case the unknown happens.  Make sure to read our guide on choosing the right travel insurance for you. Overall, World Nomads has the best balance of price and coverage.

Depending on the time of year you go, this may impact you or more or less.  What we learned is that high winds can very well change whether boat excursions will leave from certain harbours and ports.  In addition, high wind conditions can affect your beach experience as well.  This was the case for us when we were at Sarakiniko where the fine powder of the rock became very disruptive.

If you’re strategic, find out the direction of the wind and go to the side of the island that will be affected the least.

#2 You have to eat at Medusa

If you want to have amazing seafood and have a view while doing it, plan to have lunch or dinner at Medusa in Mandrakia.  They don’t take reservations here so come here during off-hours or expect to wait in line during high-season.

#3 There’s a lot of mining here

There are quite a few active open-pit mining sites on the island and as a result you have to be careful driving here because you’ll pass through zones where there could be large construction trucks carrying equipment or mining products back and forth.

Since it can get pretty windy on Milos and with the open pits, sand gets kicked up.  I was thankful to have my buff when a lot of sand was blasting at our faces while driving the ATV.

#4 Buy honey

While this isn’t exclusive to Milos, we discovered the thyme homemade honey at Kivotos ton Gefseon  in Pollonia which has made a great souvenir and for us to use at home.

#5 Consider staying in a quiet part of the island

Okay I know this totally contradicts my recommendation to stay near Adamas but if you’re looking for more of a getaway property, we met a lovely couple in Mandrakia that raved about their stay at Seadscape Mandrakia .  I can totally see the appeal of a property like this where there aren’t many neighbours in the area, you’re walking distance to the restaurant, Medusa, and the beach is right in front of you.

Where to book your hotels, car rental, ferries, flights, activities

  • Hotels – Booking.com has the best inventory of properties and with their Genius tier, you can save even more money.
  • Car Rental – If you’ve read our guide, you can book with the big brands combined with car rental coupon codes or you can use RentalCars to do a search of most companies. Make sure to also read the guide on how to rent a car in Santorini .
  • Ferries – My go-to booking platform is FerryHopper .
  • Flights – Use Skyscanner to look for cheap flights using the Everywhere feature and also setting price alerts.
  • Activities – Always compare between Viator and GetYourGuide to get the best price.

Third to Santorini and Mykonos is Milos in terms of being the most well-known of the Western Cyclades but you wouldn’t know it from how you can find your own pockets of paradise on the island.

As the birthplace to Aphrodite and coined “island of Venus” for being the place where the Venus de Milo statue was rediscovered, there’s a sense of mystery and wonder that I could connect with.

With a vast area to explore from small settlements, crazy-looking beaches, active and ruins of mining operations, sparkling waters, and amazing Greek food, it’s the kind of place where I felt like I needed at least another 3 days to see it all.

Milos to me was the perfect in-between island that wasn’t overwhelmingly busy like Santorini but not as quiet as a Folegandros.  The main port of Adamas was a hive of activity and you were never alone in any of the beaches but it was nice that you didn’t have to fight for a spot to catch the sunset or walk through large crowds.

There’s more than enough of Milos for everyone to enjoy.  More than that, I loved that Milos was just a little different from the others.

I would love to hear from you.  Are you having trouble planning your Greek Island itinerary like I was?  Drop a line here if you have any specific questions or just want to share your favourite spots in Milos.

Credit cards: Don’t get burned by hidden fees on top of terrible exchange rates. When we travel now, we use the Wise Card . Simply load it with the currency you need before you go and use it as a regular VISA or their digital wallet card. Use their free app to track how much you have and top up when you need to.

Flights: Of all the booking search engines, Skyscanner is the most helpful and easy to use thanks to their Everywhere feature . Kayak is also another that’s we will often check as well.

Car Rental: If you’re looking to save money, these car rental coupon codes will be a true game-changer. Otherwise, DiscoverCars and RentalCars are great places to start.

park sleep fly airport parking discount code

Airport Parking: You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

Data: We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices like PokeFi (use code GAP24300) because their rates are so good and you can use it globally but recently, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. The best one is Airalo . Save money by getting region-specific eSIMs and use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase. Ubigi is another one that we’ve had success with where they uniquely offer 5G coverage. Use code AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order.

Hotels: Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts . The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. TripAdvisor is also useful for reviews and bookings.

Vacation Rentals: Your first instinct will be to check Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental.

Tours: When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

Travel Insurance: Learn how to buy the best travel insurance for you. This isn’t something you want to travel without.

  • Insured Nomads – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks.
  • RATESDOTCA – Search engine Canadians looking for the cheapest insurance including multi-trip annual policies.

3. Milos Full-Day Sailboat Cruise with Food and Open Bar

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure:  Adamantas 848 01
  • Departure Time: 8:45 AM
  • Includes: Captain + 1 or 2 crew, tour guide English/Greek, fuel, meal, open bar, speakers, snorkeling gear, lifejackets, goods and taxes fees

The Mediterranean gem of Milos is filled with tourist sites and hidden treasures to explore, but you can’t visit without having seen it from the water.

The Milos Full-Day Sailboat Cruise with Food and Open Bar Tour starts off in the morning so you have the entire day for fun and gallivanting over the crystal-clear waters.

This tour is definitely one of the most exciting of its kind, with the captain and crew playing music on board to set a lighthearted mood. Setting off first thing in the morning, you’ll avoid the crowds and have the electric blue waters all to yourselves.

Your tour guide/captain is super friendly, and makes everyone feel welcome, along with an either 1 or 2-person crew to help them (depending on party size). With an open bar and a fresh-cooked meal, you’re sure to feel relaxed and comfortable, too!

You’ll get to see and explore just about every inch of Milos – even venturing to places that most tourists don’t get to see! Skinopi and Klima fishing Villages are perfect for photo ops, and you’ll make your first stop at the dramatic Cape Vani for some snorkeling and splashing around!

Kalogries Beach is also a great spot for a relaxing swim, before exploring the uniquely uncapped Sykia Cave.

The secluded Kleftiko is the highlight for most, with its white volcanic rocks, elaborate caves, vibrant turquoise waters, and exclusivity.

After spending some time here, you’ll get to discover the pristine landscapes of Poliegos Island, as well aas Sarakiniko (if weather permits). This will undoubtedly be one of your favorite activities in Milos, just like it was for us!

4. Milos Small-Group Full-Day Cruise with Snorkelling and Lunch

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Departure:  PCFW+PH9 Adamantas, Greece
  • Includes: Snacks, lunch, alcoholic beverages, soda, bottled water, use of snorkeling gear, GoPro camera, wi-fi on board

This next tour I found to be very similar to the previous one, with more of a focus on music and a bit of a “party” vibe.

The Milos Small-Group Full-Day Cruise with Snorkelling and Lunch Tour kind of felt like one of the typical Croatian boat days, where everyone has access to alcoholic beverages, snacks, and loud music blasting on board.

Of course, if your party is looking for something more relaxing, there are plenty of other tours on this guide that are perfect for that, too.

Starting out at 10:00 am, you’ll meet the captain and crew where they’ll escort you on board your vessel for the day. Right from the very beginning it was obvious that the captain and skipper were serious about making sure we all had a great time, paying attention to the slightest detail.

Not only that, but the captain was fantastic at the helm, and kept us safe throughout. Pass by Klima, where the infamous Venus de Milo statue was first discovered, which currently is exhibited at the legendary Louvre Museum.

As you take photos and videos of the jaw-dropping colorful homes, while the crew tells you interesting facts and historical accounts of the area. After, you’ll have some time at Cape Vani for a guided tour of Adamas bay, where I was surprised to see a centuries-old iron and manganese mine!

Become refreshed at Kalogries Beach with a swim and snorkel, with the snorkeling gear that they provide you with. Refuel with a light brunch on board before a longer stop at Sikia where you’ll go for an exhilarating swim, then take a dinghy into a magnificent cave.

Kleftiko Beach is next, which is perfect for photo ops in and out of the water before doing a tour of Agio Dimitrios.

5. Full Day Sailing Cruise on the West Side of Milos Island

  • Departure: Kinigos Restaurant, Adamantas 848 01
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes: Breakfast, lunch, coffee and/or tea, soda/pop, alcoholic beverages, snacks, use of snorkeling gear

How would you like having one of your closest friends take you on a cruise around paradise for a day of fun and adventure? If that sounds interesting to you, the Full Day Sailing Cruise on the West Side of Milos Island Tour  is just the one for you!

If it’s your first time in the area, I highly recommend going on one of these comprehensive adventures that will take you to most of the best sites in just one day.

You’ll not only get to enjoy the more “typical” activities like snorkeling and swimming, but you’ll also get to learn a ton about the history and geology of the area, which is worth it on its own!

The company is incredibly well-organized, with every member of the staff incredibly friendly and welcoming. Start off early in the morning and meet them to hop on board and enjoy a delicious, homemade breakfast while you peer out over the turquoise waters.

This cruise perfectly balanced relaxation with excitement, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the island, villages, and natural formations from the water.

However, you’ll also have the chance to explore up close, exploring inside caves, under the water, and on beaches.

If you’re a history buff, you’ll absolutely love how much the crew shares about the island’s past and how it’s been inhabited since the Neolithic age!

We loved getting to see Milos’ oldest villages, as well as the distinctive architecture only found here along with the fishing houses. You’ll also have plenty of time to stop at various beaches, including the world-famous Kleftiko Beach with an optional cave tour on their dinghy.

When you come back on board, a freshly-cooked lunch will be waiting for you alongside plenty of drinks!

6. Kleftiko Half-Day Speedboat Cruise With Snorkeling From Adamas

  • Duration: 5 hours
  • Departure Time: 9:30 AM
  • Includes: Boat cruise, guided snorkeling activities, snacks and refreshments, underwater GoPro10, drone photos and videos

Cruising around Milos will transport you back to ancient Greece, where you’ll feel like some kind of Greek God or Goddess amongst the pristine turquoise waters.

With the Adamas: Kleftiko Half-Day Speedboat Cruise with Snorkeling Tour , you’ll get to see natural formations that look like they were carved by the likes of Michelangelo, himself – well, perhaps even more impressive.

Thanks to the fact that you’ll be cruising around on a speedboat, your tour will be much shorter without compromising any of the incredible sights.

This is another fantastic option if you’ve never gone snorkeling before, and are nervous to go about it yourself. This tour includes 2 guided snorkeling sessions with professionals to ensure you’re safe and comfortable the entire time in the crystal clear waters.

On board, the captain and crew are there to assist you and answer any questions you may have after performing a safety briefing. From Adamas Port, you’ll leisurely sail along while learning about the history, geology, art, and culture of this magnificent place.

Check out the emerald green waters of Sykia, where you’ll get to explore inside the sea cave without a roof. It kind of reminded me of a more unforgiving cenote, making it feel like you and your group are the only ones in the world.

I absolutely loved the homemade breakfast after our first stop, which gave me energy and made me supremely free of any hunger I may have had. Kleftiko Bay complex is quite impressive too, with its 3-million-year-old volcanic rocks emerging from the sea.

Learn how this made for the perfect pirate hideout spot, where they’d actually conceal their ships! Oh, and if that weren’t enough, the crew offers drone photos and videos, as well as media from their underwater GoPros to commemorate the experience!

7. Milos Sailing Tour with Snorkeling and Lunch

  • Departure: Pollonia 848 00
  • Includes: Beverages, bottled water, afternoon tea, lunch, snacks, tour escort/host, use of snorkeling equipment, brunch, coffee and/or tea, alcoholic beverages

If you’ve ever dreamt of exploring a Mediterranean paradise off the beaten path, Milos is the perfect option. What better way to experience it than on the Milos Sailing Tour with Snorkeling and Lunch on their top-notch yachts?

Forget the crowded beaches and cookie-cutter vacations and opt for this beautiful voyage through the pristine coastline that’s equally as breathtaking as it is exciting.

Start off in the charming port of Adamas or the picturesque fishing village of Pollonia, where you’ll take a trip around the island. There are plenty of opportunities to plunge into the perfectly blue waters and discover the secrets hidden beneath the surface.

Your tour escort/host is there to point out all kinds of interesting sights, such as “The Bears”: two massive rocks that resemble the furry critters.

Cruise down Milos’ protected west coast, which is a haven for rare flora and fauna under the Natura 2000 program. Here, you may get a glimpse of Kalogries, Agathia, and Amoudaraki beaches.

However, we all know that Kleftiko – the ancient pirate hideout – is the number one destination spot for many travelers. Its labyrinth of white limestone caves and tunnels are each illuminated in their own special way thanks to the dancing sun and sea.

You’ll have tons of time to use the snorkeling equipment on board and leisurely enjoy a refreshing journey underneath the clear waters.

When you get back on board, you’ll get to enjoy a Greek feast of freshly-prepared food and drinks with one of the most beautiful backdrops in the world.

15 Best Things to Do in Milos (Greece)

A volcanic island with a big natural harbour and rich geology, Milos has been mined for millennia for minerals and material like obsidian, sulphur, and gypsum.

The island’s geology gives rise to coastal sights that photos can’t do justice, like Sarakiniko and Kleftiko, and the kind of beaches that can make you gasp.

In the Bronze Age Milos was home to the city of Phylakopi on its north coast, the greatest port in the Aegean at the time.

Later Ancient Klima was the place where the Venus de Milo was found in 1820. This iconic work of art was produced in the 2nd century BC, and a copy cast from the original in the Louvre is on show at the Archaeological Museum.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Milos :

1. Kleftiko

Kleftiko, Milos

From the port in Adamas you can set sail for the southwestern corner of Milos, where one of Greece’s most photographed natural wonders awaits.

Kleftiko is an arena of white cliffs and outcrops that you can only reach on the water.

At the base of the cliffs and rocks are caves, and natural arches, and one has a cave that you’ll pass right through and look up at the captivating layered rock that forms the ceiling.

Like all of Milos these rocks have volcanic origins, and because of their pillar-like appearance they’re compared to the cliff-top monasteries at Metreora.

The name “Kleftiko” is rooted in the word “to steal”, and is from the time when pirates would hide out in these caves.

2. Sarakiniko

Sarakiniko, Milos

If you’ve looked at any tourism material for Milos you’ll have seen images of this alien environment on the north coast of the island.

But you have to go to Sarakiniko in person to gauge the full otherworldly beauty of the place.

The sea and wind have moulded Sarakiniko’s bone-white volcanic rocks into sinuous humps and columns.

With no sign of vegetation, Sarakiniko is like a moonscape, and you’ll want to explore for as long as possible, taking photos of the white rocks and crystalline, blue-green sea.

There’s a long, shallow inlet with a beach at one end and tiered white rocks along the edge where people sunbathe and dive into the water.

3. Firiplaka Beach

Firiplaka Beach, Milos

One of a chain of inviting beaches on the remote south coast, Firiplaka is hemmed by eye-catching cliffs that are streaked with red, brown and yellow.

The sand at their foot is pale and fine washed by surf that is mostly calm unless there’s a southerly wind blowing.

On all other days, kids will be perfectly safe playing in the water which is no more than thigh-deep for some distance.

On the east side is a beach bar with blocks of sun shades and loungers to rent.

In the middle the cliffs bulge out, dividing the beach in two.

At this point there’s a humungous rock with a crack in the middle that opens to a cave on the water.

4. Milos Mining Museum

Milos Mining Museum

The island has a mining heritage that is as old as the Neolithic Period, when it was a source of obsidian for the entire Mediterranean.

Later, Pliny the Elder wrote that Milos provided more sulphur than anywhere in the ancient world, while it was also highly valued for its rich alum deposits.

That mineral history is recorded at this museum in Adamas, offering a summary of all the rocks and minerals mined here down the ages, like gypsum, sulphur, baryte, perlite, bentonite, alum and millstones.

Also interesting is the set of prehistoric obsidian tools and weapons.

You can see the role that these substances still play in everyday life, and get up to speed on mining technology in the 21st century.

In the projection room you’ll hear accounts by miners from different eras.

5. Paliochori Beach

Paliochori Beach

Chances are you’ve never had a bathing experience like Paliochori before.

Some way southeast of Zefiria this beach has a mix of dark golden sand and shingle and is bounded by stratified rocks with red and yellow blotches.

These are laced with sulphur ore and there’s a light smell of sulphur on the air.

Stepping into the transparent water you may sense that it is unusually warm.

That’s because of the many hot springs that bubble up from just below the water’s edge.

At Paliochori you’re close to a dormant volcano, and at the restaurants on the beach you can order food cooked with volcanic heat.

6. Catacombs of Milos

Catacombs of Milos

Comparable to the catacombs of Rome and the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, this network of underground galleries near Trypiti is an early-Christian burial site.

The Catacombs date from the 1st century AD and were rediscovered in 1840 and excavated shortly after by the esteemed German archaeologist Ludwig Ross.

To date three sets of tunnels have been discovered totalling more than 180 metres where 2,000 Christians were interred in the cavities in the walls or in the ground in graves covered with makeshift rocks.

Only two short sections can be visited, but that’s more than enough to get a sense of the place and decipher inscriptions on the walls that go back 2,000 years.

7. Ancient Theatre of Milos

Ancient Theatre of Milos

No more than 200 metres from the Catacombs is a theatre with tiers of pristine Parian marble seats facing the natural harbour and the dark outline of the hills on the west side.

The location alone is enough reason to come.

Belonging to the ancient town of Klima, the theatre would have first been built in Hellenistic times in the 3rd century BC and had to be reconstructed after the city was razed by the Athenians in Roman times.

The theatre is hewn from the hill, and up to eight tiers have been excavated of a monument that could once seat 7,000 spectators (compared to 700 today). Don’t forget to test the acoustics, and search for the faint vestiges of ancient Klima’s walls and towers nearby.

8. Milos Archaeological Museum

Milos Archaeological Museum

From the 3rd millennium until the 12th century BC Milos had the most important harbour in the Aegean, at Phylakopi in the north of the island.

During excavations at the end of the 19th century this site yielded outstanding Early Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean artefacts, and many of these pieces are in Room 2 at the archaeological museum.

There’s patterned pottery, figurines, a bathtub and the compelling Lady of Phylakopi, a shrine from the 14th century BC. In the entrance hall stands a copy of the Venus de Milo, where there’s also a burial jar from the 6th century BC and obsidian tools made on the island.

Rooms 3 and 4 have later Geometric, Archaic, Classic, Hellenistic and Roman-era finds like tools, coins, statues, votive steles, tomb reliefs and tables with the island’s own “Melian alphabet”.

9. Plaka Castle

Plaka Castle, Milos

At the village of Plaka on the east flank of the harbour you’ll come to a narrow stairway trailing up the slope.

After a bit effort this will deposit you at the second-highest peak on Milos at the site of a 13th-century Venetian Castle.

Plaka castle was a refuge from pirate attacks, and even if not much is left today you have to go to the top for a panorama of the whole island.

As you climb you’ll pass two lovely whitewashed churches, Panagia Skiniotissa and Panagia Thalassitra.

The stairway gets crowded just before dusk when people scramble up to see one of the most magical sunsets in the whole Aegean.

10. Paliorema

Paliorema, Milos

This beach may not be easy to get to, as you have to take a dirt track through rugged hills for a few kilometres east of Zefiria, but you won’t regret the journey once you get there.

Paliorema is more than just a place to sunbathe and swim, because the beach is backed by the ghostly ruins of a sulphur mine.

This was in business for roughly a 100 years from the middle of the 19th century, and you can find out about the harrowing working conditions at the Milos Mining Museum.

Also at the museum are the tokens that the miners used to buy food from the shop at the mine.

As for the site, there are seams of sulphur in the rocks, and you can venture around rusting pieces of heavy machinery, rails with wagons, a waterfront loading crane, cave houses and the entrances to tunnels.

11. Tsigrado Beach

Tsigrado Beach, Milos

A small cove at the bottom of red and yellow cliffs, Tsigrado Beach is not for people afraid of heights or with impaired mobility.

Unless you arrive by water, the only way down on to this beach is via a steep and narrow crevasse in the rock.

There’s a rope to cling onto and then a ladder will get you down the final few metres.

A sign at the top of the cliff warns you to make the descent at your own risk.

And yet dozens of sun-seekers go down every day, and that’s because the beach is glorious.

There’s quite a large patch of sand, while the glistening water is an arresting shade of turquoise.

You can also wade around to a little cave, where the walls are illuminated by the sunlight in the water.

12. Cave of Sykia

Cave of Sykia, Milos

Like Kleftiko, Sykia can only be approached by boat and you will normally make a stop here on the way round to its more famous neighbour.

Sykia is a collapsed sea cave with a small shingle beach in a breathtaking cauldron of textured white rock.

The light created by the water and this white stone is a joy to behold.

Normally your tour boat will wait outside the entrance to the cave and you’ll go inside on an RIB to take a dip in the sparkling blue water and take snaps of the beach.

13. Trypiti Village

Trypiti Village, Milos, Greece

Walking distance from Plaka and the Catacombs, Trypiti is a traditional village arranged in tiers on the hillside and commanded by the Church of Agios Nikolaos.

These houses were built on the ruins of Ancient Klima, and is where the Venus de Milo came to light in 1820. Along the ridge in the upper part of the village is a line of historic windmills, built in this elevated position to catch the breeze but now converted to accommodation with awesome vistas of the harbour.

Like Plaka Trypiti is a gorgeous place to watch the sun setting over the island’s natural harbour.

14. Adamas World War Two Bomb Shelter

In 1941, Milos was a foothold for the Wehrmacht to launch their Invasion of Crete, and a few bunkers like this one in Adamas were excavated to offer protection for personnel and store resources and equipment.

Adamas has the largest of all, and was used as a shelter by many of the island’s inhabitants during an Allied bombardment 1944. For just €2 you can negotiate the bunker’s long tunnels and 12 chambers.

Taking advantage of the atmospheric setting, the bunker is a kind of art gallery, with graffiti, paintings and imaginative installations.

15. Firopotamos Beach

Firopotamos Beach

Quite unlike any other beach on the island, Firopotamos is both a beach and a tiny fishing port.

This adds another layer of charm to the scene, as the whitewashed fisherman’s houses come right down to the water and on the ground floors have blue-painted doors for their “syrmata”, where the boats are stored.

The beach has a blend of pebbles and white sand, and being in a cove away from the open sea the water is perfectly clear and a dreamy shade of light blue.

At the tip of the headland on the eastern entrance to the cove are some ruins for share-worthy photos.

Useful Info for Spending 3 Days in Milos

How to get to milos, flying to milos.

The easiest and quickest way to reach Milos is to take a flight from Athens. This is the only way you can reach Milos by air, as it’s the only airport that offers flights to the island.

The journey takes around 40 minutes, and several flights run each week. Milos airport is also just 5-minutes from the main town which is handy!

If you want to get to Milos this way, you’ll have to pre-book your flights well in advance, especially in the peak summer season.

Taking the ferry to Milos

Getting the ferry to Milos is much more scenic, although the journey is definitely longer.

Ferries from Piraeus Port in Athens run regularly, and during the summer months, there are up to seven ferry crossings a day.

The journey will take at least 3.5 hours, and that’s if you choose a high-speed vessel. Otherwise, you’re looking at a journey time of at least 6 hours.

You can also catch the ferry to Milos from other islands, including the famous Santorini, Mykonos, and Paros among others.

During the summer months, ferries run from plenty of other Greek Islands too including Crete, Ios, and Rhodes.

Usually, there are more ferry operator companies on the same route with various prices and duration. You can use the below search box to compare ferries and check the schedules.

Best time to visit Milos

Milos’s peak season runs from June to mid-September, and this is when the island will be at its busiest.

This is when temperatures are also at their highest, and you’ll have plenty of sunshine too. Temperatures during these months range from 24-30°C (75-86°F).

However, as this is the peak tourist season, accommodation prices will be high and the island can get pretty crowded.

If you’d prefer a cooler and quieter experience, then heading to Milos during the shoulder season may be best. Temperatures range from 19-26°C (66-78°F) during May and late September/October so it’s still a great time to visit.

Although ferries may be less frequent during the shoulder season, you’ll have a much more peaceful experience and hotel prices will be cheaper too.

You can also visit Milos in winter but be prepared for milder temperatures, and for a lot of the restaurants/tour operators to be closed.

Plaka, Milos

How to get around in Milos

There are plenty of ways to get around Milos, so traveling around the island is easy.

Milos has a pretty good public bus system that visits all the central spots on the island, and tickets are very cheap. The central bus station is located in Adamas, but there are other bus terminals located across the island too.

If you don’t fancy getting around by bus, you can travel by taxi but expect prices to be much higher.

However, if you want to make the most out of this 3-day Milos itinerary, I’d recommend hiring a car. You can literally drive from one end of Milos to the other in less than an hour, which is very convenient.

This way you don ’t have to rely on public transport timetables and can visit the more hidden spots along the way. Generally, Milos has two main pick-up locations, the airport, and the ferry port in Adamas, so no matter how you get to the island, you ’ll be able to get a car right away.

It’s important to note that the western part of the island doesn’t have properly paved roads so you’ll need a 4×4 if you want to explore that part of the island.

However, the main tourist spots are all in the eastern part of the island so it ’s enough to rent a normal car for exploring unless you want to go off-roading.

Where to stay in Milos

Deciding where to stay in Milos isn’t easy – especially for first-timers. That ’s why I wrote a complete guide about the best areas to stay in Milos so if you want to get familiar with each area in more detail, you can refer to that article.

It’s entirely up to you where you decide to stay on the island but generally, Adamas, Pollinia, and Plaka are the three most popular areas.

They are all set in a great location with good transport links and plenty of amenities including tavernas and bars.

We personally stayed at Cave Suites Milos and I can only recommend this amazing hotel. I ’m not exaggerating when I say that we enjoyed every minute of our stay!

The hotel has a bit of a remote location which means you can enjoy the peaceful scenery but it ’s still central enough that basically every attraction is located within a 10-20 minute drive from the hotel. Moreover, the famous Sarakiniko Beach is only a 4-minute drive away!

However, the true highlight was the staff – they treated us like family and made us feel at home from the first minute we arrived.

Map for your Milos itinerary

Below you can find a customized map that includes all the locations you’re going to visit on this Milos itinerary.

I marked your 3 days in Milos with different colors – I used blue for the first day, green for the second day, and red for the third day, so you can easily see which places you’re going to visit each day.

If you open up this post on your phone and you click on the bracket in the upper right corner of the map, it will open up in your Google Maps app so you can always have it with you. Super convenient, right?

Day 1 of Your Milos Itinerary

Being the capital village of the island, Plaka is one of the must-visit places on every 3 day Milos itinerary.

Since it can get pretty busy during the day, I ’d recommend getting there first thing in the morning to be able to explore while it ’s still quiet.

To start your day off right, head to Kokkino for breakfast. This is without a doubt one of the best places to grab something to start your day!

You’ll have endless choices of pancakes, crepes, waffles, and English breakfasts here, as well as a good coffee. What more do you need?

Breakfast at Kokkino in Plaka, Milos

Afterward, you’ll want to explore the streets of Plaka while it’s still free of tourists. These charming, cobble-stone alleyways are home to plenty of hidden gems, ranging from stunning churches to awesome viewpoints.

One of the most stunning places is the Church of Panagia Korfiatissa as it provides an amazing view of its surroundings. You can even see Plathiena Beach in the distance!

Another unmissable sight in Plaka is the Venetian Castle perched above the village. However, since it ’s an amazing place to catch the sunset, I would actually recommend visiting it another time.

That doesn ’t mean that you can ’t climb up this morning though! So if you have some extra energy, feel free to check it out (but don ’t skip coming back for sunset).

Typical Greek streets in Plaka, Milos

Firopotamos

Located on the northern coastline of Milos, the charming fishing village of Firopotamos is just a 10-minute drive from Plaka, so I recommend going there next.

With a golden sand beach, quaint boathouses, and crystal clear waters – it’s no wonder this place is so popular.

There aren ’t too many things to do here, but the beauty of the place is unrivaled. You’ll want to allow yourself at least a half an hour to explore, or even more if you ’re planning to include some beach time.

During your visit to Firopotomas make sure you visit the Church of Agios Nikolaos and spend some time relaxing on the beach. Although only small, this beach is stunning and is surrounded by a scenic backdrop of blue waters and cliffs.

Firopotamos is a must-visit during your 3 days in Milos, so don’t miss this place!

Firopotamos, Milos

Mandrakia

If you loved Firopotamos, wait until you see Mandrakia! It’s another scenic fishing village less than a 10-minute drive from Firopotamos, where you’ll find colorful houses lining the bay.

You won’t need a lot of time to explore Mandrakia as it’s super small but trust me, you don ’t want to leave this place out of your Milos itinerary.

If you happen to be visiting during lunchtime and you ’ve worked up an appetite, you can stop for lunch at Medusa , one of the best restaurants in Milos .

The restaurant overlooks the Aegean Sea, so you can listen to the splashing waves while you dine. The food here is simply delicious and is Mediterranean food at its best. You’ll get to sample tasty seafood and Greek specialties, and sip a variety of Ouzo and wines.

With delicious food, breathtaking views, and a charming feel, Mandrakia has to be included in your 3 days in Milos itinerary!

Mandrakia, Milos

Fyriplaka Beach

Fyriplaka Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Milos , and it’s not hard to see why! With glistening white sands, crystal clear waters, and dramatic landscapes, this beach is the perfect place to relax and head out for a swim.

It’s also a great place to sunbathe and snorkel, but the highlight has to be the rocky outcrop that’s found about halfway down the beach. The outcrop is huge and there’s even an archway within the rock, so you can swim right through it.

As the beach is so popular, you’ll find that it can get pretty busy. Parking spots are very limited so if you ’re traveling in high season, you might find it hard to secure a spot in the middle of the afternoon.

In case you ’re traveling without a car, there is a bus stop close to the beach so you can get there easily without any hassle.

milos tour ukraine

Tsigrado Beach

If you’re looking for a breathtaking beach that’s a little off the beaten path, Tsigrado Beach is the perfect place for you. This secluded beach can only be accessed by climbing down a ladder, so it’s definitely not for everyone.

However, if you don’t mind a little bit of a climb, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in Milos. The beach is only a few meters wide but it’s over 100 meters long, so there’s plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the stunning views.

The water is crystal clear and the perfect temperature for swimming, so you can cool off after your hike down to the beach. Just be sure to wear appropriate shoes as the ladder can be a bit slippery!

As Tsigrado Beach is located right next to Fyriplaka, it makes sense to visit them both on the same day. However, since getting down to Tsigrado is quite challenging, feel free to skip it – you will see it from the boat tomorrow anyways!

milos tour ukraine

Paleochori Beach

Paleochori Beach is another spot that just had to be included on this 3 day Milos itinerary. It’s situated on the south coast of Milos and is one of the island’s most colorful beaches.

Instead of a pristine white, the sand is mixed with colorful pebbles giving it a unique shade. The beach is also surrounded by vivid red rock cliffs, due to the volcanic origin of the area.

Paleochori is the perfect spot to relax, sunbathe, and head for a swim. The water is crystal clear and is extremely inviting on a hot summer’s day. If you’d prefer something a bit more adventurous than sunbathing, there are also plenty of watersports on offer here.

There are also plenty of tavernas and bars lining the beach, so you’ll have plenty of choices when it comes to dining and beverages.

Paleochori Beach, Milos

Dinner at Sirocco

If you’re looking for somewhere to dine in the evening at Paleochori, then Sirocco is the place to be. The restaurant is set right on the beach, with chairs and umbrellas readily available.

Sirocco is well known for its traditional Greek dishes, fresh seafood, and luscious desserts.

However, that’s not all! It’s famously known as the ‘Volcanic all-day restaurant’ due to its unique cooking methods. If you decide to dine here, you have the chance to sample volcanic dishes which usually consist of fish or lamb.

These dishes are cooked under the sand by using the area’s geothermal energy, which is incredibly ecological. The taste of these dishes is truly unique, and something you just have to try to know!

Not only is the food delicious, but there is also a wide variety of drinks available, and you can even try shisha if you’d like to.

Day 2 of Your Milos Itinerary

Half-day boat tour to kleftiko.

You might remember that at the beginning of this Milos itinerary I mentioned that the western part of the island can ’t be visited with a normal car due to the bad roads.

If you rent a 4×4 you ’ll be able to drive around, however, since there are no roads leading down to the beaches, you won ’t be able to visit them.

So what ’s the solution? Well, you need to go on a boat tour!

No Milos itinerary is complete without seeing the island from the sea. Trust me, you won ’t want to miss this experience!

milos tour ukraine

Known as an old pirates ’ hangout, Kleftiko is one of the most iconic places on the island and it ’s also the number one destination when it comes to a boat tour. This stunning place can only be accessed by boat, and it’s well worth the effort to get there.

The beach at Kleftiko is surrounded by towering cliffs and crystal clear waters. There are plenty of caves and small coves to explore, and the snorkeling is some of the best in Milos.

Most tours take a full day which eats up quite a big chunk of your 3 days in Milos. However, this half-day Kleftiko boat tour gives you plenty of time to enjoy this part of the island without having to sacrifice the whole day.

milos tour ukraine

The tour starts at 9 am and departs from Adamas port. First, you will pass by several fishing villages as you leave Milos Bay behind. The first swimming stop will be the bay of the Kalogries before you move on to Siki Cave.

Afterward, you will be able to spend a few hours at Kleftiko where you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the nearby caves. By the time you get back to the boat, a delicious lunch will be waiting for you.

The last stop will be Gerakas Beach, which is completely inaccessible by land. The boat tour ends at Agia Kiriaki, from where you ’ll be taken back to Adamas with a minivan.

Caves at Kleftiko, Milos

As the picturesque fishing village of Klima is located only a 10-minute drive from Adamas, it ’s a great place to continue your day after the boat tour.

The highlight of the village has to be its traditional fishing houses lining the shore. Each of these houses has a different color, making this spot incredibly photogenic.

You’ll want to leave yourself a good 30 minutes at least to explore these fishing houses, and take some photographs.

If you want to take a little break or you ’re feeling hungry (although I doubt that after having lunch on the boat), you can stop by Astakas Cafe Restaurant which is located right on the waterfront.

milos tour ukraine

Ancient Theater & Catacombs

The Ancient Theater and the Catacombs are two of the most historic sites on the island. There is just a 10-minute walk between them so it’s a great idea to visit these two sites at the same time.

The Ancient Theater was built by the Romans during the Hellenistic period which was during the 3rd century BC. Considering its age, it’s incredibly well-preserved and offers stunning views of Milos Bay. As a bonus, it ’s entirely free to visit!

After visiting the theater, you can pay a short visit to the Catacombs of Milos . These catacombs date back to the 1st century but they were only discovered in the 1800s.

There are three catacombs in total, interconnected underground. It’s believed that these catacombs were first used as a burial site by early Christians before they turned into a place of worship and refuge.

The catacombs can only be visited with a local guide who will be appointed at the ticket counter. The tour costs € 4 per person and only lasts 5-10 minutes.

If you ’re visiting with a car, there is a large parking lot close to the catacombs from where you can walk to the Ancient Theater as well. Otherwise, if you ’re looking looking for a workout, you can climb the stairs from Klima too!

Venetian Castle for sunset

The Venetian Castle is situated in the charming town of Plaka and is a must for any 3 day Milos itinerary. It’s the only remnant left of the island’s Venetian rule and is situated on the second-highest point of the island.

The castle itself is split into two different sections, the highest uphill section where nobility lived, and the lower section. Both sections of the castle were separated by a wall built in the middle.

From the top, you’ll get beautiful views of Plaka, Milos Bay, and the island’s scenic beaches. The walk up to the castle takes less than half an hour but allow yourself plenty of time to get up there as most likely you ’ll stop quite frequently to appreciate the views.

Although the views from the castle are spectacular in themselves, they’ll truly take your breath away if you head up there to watch the sun go down. In case you’re visiting in high season, you might want to go up earlier to secure yourself a spot for sunset.

Have dinner in Plaka or Adamas

To finish off the second day of your Milos itinerary, head down to either Plaka or back to Adamas for dinner. Whichever one you choose, you ’ll be spoilt for choices.

Avli-Milos is one of the highest-rated restaurants in Plaka, or you can head to Archontoula which is known for its delicious Mediterranean dishes.  Phatses is another great choice as it’s lit up beautifully in the evening.

If you decide to go back to Adamas, I’d recommend heading to Nostos Seafood Experience . This was hands-down one of the best meals I’ve had on the island, and the views from the restaurant are stunning.

However, this experience doesn ’t come cheap so if you ’re looking for a budget option, you can try Gyros of Milos which serves delicious gyros and kebabs.

Day 3 of Your Milos Itinerary

Sarakiniko beach.

Sarakiniko Beach is one of the most unique beaches in Greece. The beach is covered in white limestone, which gives it an otherworldly feel.

The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming, but the highlight of the beach is definitely the landscape. With endless white rock, distinctive formations, and huge hollows – you’ll honestly feel like you’ve stepped on the moon.

This beach is one of the most photographed locations in Greece, and you’ll want to allow yourself at least an hour to explore it. If you want to do some swimming or cliff jumping, you can easily budget a couple of hours.

Although the beach feels like it’s a world away from everything, it ’s a very popular place and it gets pretty crowded during the day. That ’s why I recommend heading there first thing in the morning so you can enjoy it without the crowds and secure a parking spot easily.

Papafragas Caves

After Sarakinino Beach, jump back in your car for a 10-minute drive to reach another unique place in Milos.

Papafragas Caves & Beach is a true natural wonder – the beach is surrounded by towering cliffs and crystal clear waters and it truly looks spectacular.

However, getting down is quite tricky. The parking lot is located on the top of the cliff from where you have to climb down a steep set of stairs.

There is even a warning sign at the beginning of the path so in case you do want to climb down, be very careful! In case it ’s been raining or the weather is too windy, it ’s advisable to skip it.

If you don ’t want to risk the climb, you can simply admire the views from the cliff tops instead before heading to the next destination on your 3 day Milos itinerary.

Pollonia is one of the most beautiful fishing villages on the island with small whitewashed houses lining the bay and a pristine beach.

You’ll find plenty of tavernas along the waterfront, and they all offer stunning views of the Aegean Sea. You can also visit two beautiful churches in the village – Agia Paraskevi and the Church of Saint Nicholas.

The next activity on your Milos itinerary will be another boat tour that leaves from Pollonia so it ’s worth arriving a bit earlier and taking a walk around the village.

Pollonia, Milos

Half-day boat tour to Kimolos & Poliegos

A boat tour to the nearby islands of Kimolos & Poliegos is a great way to spend your last afternoon in Milos.

These two uninhabited islands are home to the bluest waters you ’ll ever see! The waters are crystal clear and perfect for swimming, and the beaches are completely untouched.

Although it ’s possible to visit these islands on a group tour, since this is your last day in Milos, I would recommend treating yourself to a private tour. We booked a private boat tour with Salty Rides and it was definitely the highlight of our Milos trip.

Their boats are spectacular and provide everything you could possibly need on a boat trip, including snorkeling gear, towels, windproof jackets, and even SUPs.

Moreover, you are welcome to use the action camera and the drone on board so you can document your experiences even if you don ’t have your own equipment.

Snacks and refreshments are also included so you literally only need to bring your swimsuits to enjoy a fantastic afternoon.

If you’re looking for a day of relaxation and breathtaking scenery, booking a private boat tour to Kimolos & Poliegos is the perfect activity for you.

Moreover, they also provide private tours to Kleftiko and Sykia Cave as well so if you want to make your trip even more memorable, you can opt for this instead of going on a group tour.

Girl in a boat at Poliegos Island

Dinner in Pollonia

After the boat tour, you must have worked up quite the appetite so I recommend staying in Pollonia for dinner.

We personally ate at Yialos which serves delicious seafood, traditional Greek food, and tasty salads. They also have seafront tables which are perfect for watching the sunset.

However, you’ll also find plenty of other food choices in Pollonia.  Akrotiri Seafood Obsession and Armenaki are two other popular choices that both serve fresh fish.

If you’ve had your fill of seafood during your stay on Milos, you can head to Enalion Restaurant instead. They have a variety of other options including marinated lemon chicken, meatballs, and eggplant.

If you’re looking for a place for afters, then this cafe has amazing desserts and coffee! You could even head here before the boat tour if you wanted to.

The Perfect 3 Days in Milos Itinerary for First-Timers

6 thoughts on “The Perfect 3 Days in Milos Itinerary for First-Timers”

hello! this is amazing thank you! i want to go to some greek islands in Sept, and Milos is a definite and will use this itinerary for sure! have you visited any other islands perhaps slightly more lively as would like to do another one along with Milos with a bit of a different vibe – maybe mykonos, Naxos? just wondered if you had any recommendations what could tie in nicely with Milos. thanks!

Hey! Actually, I just came from Greece after spending one month there so I still have many articles to write about my experience 🙂 On this trip, we visited Athens, Milos, Santorini, Paros, and Naxos, and a few years ago I’ve also been to Mykonos so these are the islands I’m familiar with. If you’re looking for a livelier island, I would pick either Mykonos or Santorini. Naxos is pretty chill, it’s more about beaches and good restaurants but still pretty nonetheless. I also have a few articles for Mykonos, you are welcome to check them out! https://shewandersabroad.com/tag/mykonos

Thanks for this article! You helped me plan out my 3 day itinerary. Do you think it is doable to see Milos without a car, with only a bus? (I’m going in early October for 3 days).

I’m so happy to hear that! I think it’s doable but it will be a lot more stressful. Also, there are many parts of the island that are not covered by buses so most likely you’ll have to skip a few places.

Are you able to share how much the private boat tour costs? The website doesn’t list it. Thanks!

Hey, I’ve included links to the specific tours where you can see the prices and availability.

How to Choose the Perfect Cruise in Greece for Your Needs and Budget?

If you are thinking about coming to Greece this summer, there is a great chance that you will spend some time on a boat, whether it is for some hours only or for a full week of sailing! The Greek Islands are the perfect destination for your sailing vacations where you will be rewarded with great weather, beautiful scenery, yummy food and so much more. But there are different ways to enjoy them from the sea, and there is a solution for each budget and for everyone’s dream. Among the 6 000+ islands of the country, you will find different ambiance, activities and things to see and do so you should prepare and select the ones that corresponds you the most beforehand. We have highlighted our favourite ones for sailing on our previous article so let’s focus here on what cruising mode you should opt for according to the money you want to spend and the things you want to do. Think about how you behave at sea and how many days you imagine you can spend on board of a boat and let’s see what options are better fitted to you need.   Bareboat Charter for a week on a sailboat or a catamaran Chartering a boat without skipper nor crew is the option that will give you the most freedom. This is the best suited solution if you are going on vacation among friends and if one or more of you already have a sailing license valid in Greece and feel comfortable skipping. It also comes of course with responsibility as you will have to manage the boat on your own at all times. So if it has been a long time that your designated skipper has sailed or if the rest of the group has no experience at all in sailing, maybe you should hire a crew and not take the risk of wasting your holidays with a bad itinerary or bad decision at sea. Keep in mind that the Aegean Sea can be quite rough during summer, with the meltemi blowing almost all the time. In terms of budget, a bareboat charter can be affordable if you are maximizing the number of passengers and the cabins available on board. Make sure you really know your friends as you will be 24 hours a day with them on a small space. A catamaran will give you more space while still living the sailing experience you might have been dreaming of, but will of course costs more than a monohull. Crewed Charter for a week on a sailboat or a catamaran For more relaxing holidays, hire a crewed monohull or catamaran. This is the most common option in Greece, as you will not need to worry about anything else than your tan. You skipper will suggest an itinerary based on the weather forecast and you can make together a decision about the islands and beaches you can visit without problem during your week. If you also chose to hire an host/hostess, he/she will take care of the cleaning and the cooking for you, giving you more time to discover the bays you will stop at or going on land adventures once moored on an island. This is of course a luxurious option that might not be accessible to everyone. If you still want to experience it with your friends or family but don’t want to spend a fortune, think about coming to Greece at the lower season, in May or in September/October for example, where the prices are more reasonable and the islands as well as the seas are less crowded.   A few days on a sailboat You want to have your sailing holidays but do not feel comfortable spending a full week on board? Think about chartering a sailboat for one night or 2. This will give you the chance to experience sailing life but still gives you time to discover the country by land as well on the rest of your holidays. This is the perfect option for a couple, to spend a few days literally floating on a dream. A great opportunity to spend a bit of your honeymoon or celebrate an occasion with your loved one on a surprising setting. In Greece, you will find possibility to do so directly on some islands, some sailing boat offering this service, where you will be sailing around the island itself and probably one or more islands as well during your stay on board. Milos is of course a great destination to do so, the island coastline being absolutely breathtaking and having also few islands very close by, such as Poliegos or Kimolos, which makes for a great sailing trip of several days. In terms of costs, the company will most likely offer you a package price, that includes everything, from the crew to the fuel and staying fees. Some prices might include as well as the provisions for your whole stay or at least the costs for breakfast and lunch, giving you the opportunity to discover local taverns for dinners at the port you will stay. Check out our offer and suggested itinerary for a 3 days/2 nights stay on board of our sailboat La Pomme Bleue!   Private Day cruise around an island If your holidays are too short for a multiday adventure or you don’t feel like spending a might on a moving boat, a private full day cruise might be the solution for you! Imagine spending one day just sailing from beach to beach, swimming in crystal-clear water, admiring gorgeous landscape from the deck of a sailboat and taking all the sun you can on deck. This experience is perfectly suited for a couple wanted a quick get away from the civilisation, or a group of friends or a family wishing to spend a good times all together for one day. This cruise usually comes all inclusive, from the crew that will be at your service all day, to the food, drinks

Best Sailing Destinations in Greece

Discovering Greece by boat is probably one of the best decisions you can take this summer. Sailing holidays hopping between islands and exploring beaches, undiscovered bays and stunning nature is an amazing way to travel and can be more accessible than you might have imagined. Greece is an increasing popular destination for yachting and sailing is the best way to do it. Most of Greece’s seabed is sandy so it gives you excellent anchorages, giving you the possibility to not be limited to marinas. Because waking up anchored on a secluded bay and taking a dive in transparent water in the morning is just the best way to start the day! So, here is our choice of best sailing destinations in Greece for your next holidays. Where to start your charter from? The most popular and practical departure point is Piraeus port and its different marinas on the south coast of Athens: Zea, Flisvos and Alimos. Lavrio, on the eastern coast of Greece is also a sailing departure for many sailboats and is the ideal port if you want to cruise around the Cyclades islands. Where to sail? Greece is surrounded by the Aegean and the Ionian seas. The former is a very popular destination among sailors, thanks to the sunny and mostly stable weather, the lack of tides or strong currents. Here you will find the perfect picture of Greece: crystal clear water, picturesque ports and countless islands and bays as magnificent one from the other. The main thing you will have to count with here is the Meltemi, this northern wind that blows during summer, from May to September, and can get pretty strong, up to force 9 on the Beaufort scale. The Ionian sea is not as famous as the Aegean sea but offers beautiful locations, which makes it a great reason to go explore it. June to September are the best months for sailing there, with a sea usually calm and a gentle wind blowing steadily, with occasional gusts. While the water is generally very calm in the south, sailing can be a bit rougher in the north. Let’s take a closer look at the different islands that you should explore during your sailing holidays. The Cyclades This archipelago is made up of thirty larger islands and approximately another 190 islets with a total area spanning over 2,500 km2. As the islands are not too far apart, the Cyclades offer an amazing diversity of experiences. In a week, you can already explore many ports and bays, visiting a different island everyday if you wish. As it is a popular destination, we advise you to stay away from the busiest islands, Mykonos or Santorini as the archipelago has so much more to offer. Milos If you decide to go sailing in the Cyclades, Milos will probably be your favourite destination (and maybe we are not so objective here …). The island has everything you can wish for and you can easily spend 2 to 3 days sailing around and explore its numerous secluded beaches. You will also find here very unusual rock formations and high cliffs that plunge into the sea, making it a breathtaking landscape. Milos has the largest number of beaches of all the Cyclades islands so it will be easy to have some privacy, even in the middle of August as there will always be a bay where you will be alone. Spending the night in the famous bay of Kleftiko and its white rock formations and its caves, exploring the West side of the island and its wild beaches, arriving by sea to the famous Sarakiniko bay, these are some of the best things to do around Milos. It is also very easy to take a look at the nearby non-inhabited island of Poliegos, with it crystal-clear waters and its hidden little bays. Paros and Naxos Paros is situated in the heart of the Cyclades and is famous for its many sandy beaches, beautiful countryside and traditional villages. Discover hidden alleyways in Parikia, leisure in the afternoon in Naoussa or immerse yourself in Kolymbithres Beach, the seawater sculptures of golden sand around granite rocks.  This is also the perfect spot for kitesurfing or windsurfing, the strong winds blowing regularly around there. Naxos, located on its opposite side is the largest island in the Cyclades. You can enjoy the many beautiful beaches here and discover mountain villages off the beaten track when you take a trip by land. You can also enjoy the sunset, heading North of the capital to Palatia islet and its unfinished Temple of Apollo. The 2500-year-old marble doorway, named Portara, faces the island of Delos and is the most famous picture of the island, when the sun sets over this mythical gate of the god Apollo. Koufonisia The islands of Koufonisia in the Small Cyclades archipelago are probably the most beautiful tourist destination for those who are looking for idyllic, tranquil evenings. In modern Greek slang, the word “Koufo” means “unbelievable” and when you arrive, you’ll see why. These small, unspoilt islands have surprisingly good sailing infrastructure, so disembarking won’t be a problem and we recommend exploring the whole archipelago, Kato Koufonisia, where you’ll find only a few fishermen’s houses and a picturesque church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Koufonisia itself, the smallest but most densely populated island of the Cyclades with a population of around 350. The main occupation here is fishing, making the island a genuine fishing village, where visitors can enjoy fresh fish and seafood. It’s also worth mentioning the village of Chora on the southwest coast of the island as a typical example of Cycladic architecture. Delos and Rineia Not far from Naxos and Mykonos lies the small uninhabited island of Delos, which is way quieter option than its neighbours.  You can only reach the island by boat and no one is allowed to stay for the night here as a big part of the island is ancient archaeological sites and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is here that Apollo and Artemis are considered to have been born and as the

Yacht Chartering

Yacht Chartering: What to Expect, How to Plan and What to Bring

Cruising the seas on a private yacht is many people’s idea of a dream vacation. But, when that dream finally comes true, what exactly should you expect onboard? Discover how to perfectly plan your holiday week on board and tips on what to bring with you. 3 Different Types of Charter Yacht The first thing you need to decide before chartering a boat is what type of package you want. These different types of charter dictate the atmosphere and ambience during your trip. Here are a quick description of your 3 options: Bareboat charter Bareboat Charter is an agreement between a Yacht Owner or a Fleet Operator (chartering the boat on the owner’s behalf) that gives the charterer full utility of the charter yacht, together with responsibility, for the boat, in return for payment. As you can imagine, this option is ideal for guests looking for a little extra privacy during their trip, or groups with experienced sailors who would relish a hands-on holiday, giving you freedom and letting you self explore at maximum. Crewed charter On a crewed yacht charter, you simply rent a yacht complete with a crew. This usually includes a skipper, a host or hostess who takes care of the cleaning, cooking and making sure everybody is comfortable, and any other personnel needed to complete your journey in maximum comfort, including a chef in the most luxurious options. Crewed charters allow guests to simply sit back and enjoy the ride, without having to actually get involved in running the yacht. It is all about customer service, personalised attention and your skipper will make sure the itinerary is expertly-organised. Each of these two charter types are more common in different parts of the world. Yacht charters in Greece, for example, is usually done with a skipper and a hostess, ensuring you have a good and worry less time on board. All-inclusive charter A crewed charter is not all inclusive as any other activity you would like to do during your week will be at extra costs, such as the use of water sport equipment or any on-land activity. This is something that an all-inclusive charter will integrate. Think scuba diving, jet ski, paddle board, hiking tours on the different islands you will visit but also premium drinks or other luxuries. If you’re looking for the complete luxury charter yacht experience, an all-inclusive itinerary might be right for you.   What should you bring with you? When chartering a boat, you should keep in mind that most of the equipment you will need are already provided, so no need to over-pack. In most cases, kitchen appliances and utensils, bed and linens, TVs or projectors and also water sport equipment are included. Keep also in mind that on board, space is usually reduced so whatever you bring should be essential to your week. Moreover, a good charter experience is all about simplicity and you will probably be sailing through warm water and where the sun is shining. That will most likely be the case if you charter your boat in Greece. Therefore, bring casual and breezy beach attire and swimsuits of course. Nevertheless, you never know how the sea will behave during your week so make sure to also have some warmer and waterproof clothes, such as a windbreaker jacket. Regarding shoes, bring a pair with rubber soles to be able to wear them on deck as well as during excursions on land. Adequate sun protection is vital aboard your charter yacht trip, ensuring you can spend as much time as possible above deck, enjoying the surrounding ocean and spectacular scenery under the Greek summer sun. So bring a good sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hats and a light and loose-fitting cover-ups if your skin is fragile. Plenty of reef-safe sunscreen is a must, as well as sunglasses, sun hats and breezy, loose-fitting cover-ups. While simplicity is key, if you’re planning on participating in any activities, such as scuba diving or surfing, you may need to pack your own equipment, depending on the vessel’s facilities. What to do during your week on board? While direct access to the ocean and sun-soaked decks with stunning vistas should be plenty to keep you entertained, most charter boats come equipped with facilities to pass the time. Complimentary stand-up paddleboards or kayaks are often included in the price, allowing for some exploration whenever the boat is moored. Usually, snorkelling equipment including masks, snorkels and fins are also offered so make sure you explore the blue and transparent waters around you. Some boats will also have equipment for fishing if you want to feel like you have earned your dinner! Except for water activities, in case of a crewed charter, your skipper and crew will generally suggest some excursions on land to take during your trip and will most likely have the right contacts on the different islands you will visit to ensure you have a quality time. Whether it is treks through natural ad stunning areas, visits of villages, cultural tours, etc. Your crew will also most probably have some secrets spots to share with you and you should definitely follow their advice!

Day 1 Milos Itinerary

Morning / midday.

On your first day, you will either arrive at the Adamas Port or Airport. You will need to get checked into your accommodations and acquainted with your incredible surroundings.

The main towns in Milos are Pollonia, Adamas, and Plaka.

If you arrive by ferry before you can check into your hotel, you can explore Adamas. There aren’t many exciting things to explore in the main port of Adamas, but here you will find shops, cafes, and restaurants.

On day one, the ferry port could be a great place to eat traditional Greek food and people-watch while you wait for check-in. I recommend Restaurant Volta Milos Island.

If you are renting a car in Milos , most of the dealers are here in the port.

The main bus stop is also here if you are not renting a car in Milos. Milos Bus Schedule .

Early Evening

An incredible place for your first night in Milos is dinner at O! Hamos! Tavern . There is also a beach right across from the restaurant where you can watch your first sunset!

O! Hamas! Tavern is within a 20-minute walk from Port Adamas. This restaurant DOES NOT take reservations, and it is one of the most popular.

I waited about an hour for a table. Worth it, but do yourself a favor and get there early!

Bean Dish at O! Hamas in Milos

Late Evening

After dinner, if you are looking to have a few cocktails, a great place near O! Hamos Tavern and on the way to Adamas Port is Mangata Milos.

Why not try a traditional Greek Liquior and ask for Mastika ! This cocktail bar is open till 2 am!

Day 2 Milos Itinerary

Visit sarakiniko beach.

milos tour ukraine

On the second day of 4 days on Milos’s itinerary; let’s go to the most famous beach in Milos! I tend to do my most anticipated activities at the start of my trips to ensure it happens.

Most people are attracted to Milos to see the crystal clear waters at Sarakiniko Beach , AKA Moon Beach! I will admit visiting this beach was high on my bucket list!

milos tour ukraine

There are 75 beautiful beaches with turquoise water in Milos, all incredible, but nothing like Sarakiniko!

Located on the island’s north shore, it is reachable by bus but with limited availability. Check Milos Bus Schdule here.

This beach is unique due to the white volcanic rocks resulting from volcanic activity that molded into lunar-like rock formations.

The locals often refer to Sarakiniko Beach as the “lunar” beach. This is where the term moon beach steamed from! Plan to arrive early, around 8am and beat the crowds!

Best Lunch Spot Near Sarakiniko Beach

Tables and chairs set for lunch with the background of the ocean. A perfect place for lunch on your Milos itinerary.

I highly recommend the restaurant Medusa and the colorful fishing village Mandrakia which is close to Sarakiniko Beach! It is only a short drive of 10 minutes away by car!

Unfortunately, the bus won’t go to this area of the island. It is a 55-minute walk, which could be doable, but there are a lot of hills to consider.

You will need a taxi to go there without a car. Alternatively, you could bring your own lunch to the beach.

Medusa does not take reservations , sigh. I arrived 10 minutes before they opened to ensure I wouldn’t have to wait!

You will find the restaurant through the small village perched on the side of the rocks overlooking the ocean. Medusa serves traditional Greek cuisine.

After lunch or before, check out the colorful fishing village at Mandrakia Beach! Marvel at the turquoise waters and get a few photos. The village is small, and you won’t need more than an hour or so to explore.

Wine Tasting in a Cave

Sunset in Pollonia | 4 Days in Milos Itinerary

After a day at the beach and an afternoon exploring Mandrakia this evening, get yourself to Pollonia for some wine tasting in a cave!

Pollonia is located 20 minutes by car from Mandrakia. You can reach Pollonia from the Adamas port if you need the bus. I would recommend staying in Pollonia when visiting Milos, especially if you are not renting a car.

Wine Tasting in the Cave Winery

Sunset Seaside Dining in Pollonia

After an early evening of wine tasting, end the evening in Pollonia with dinner at Yialos ! This restaurant is along the seaside on the main strip in Pollonia.

It is my favorite spot to watch the sunset, eat traditional Greek cuisine, and people-watch. You will be greeted by a friendly staff and a few local cats.

I highly recommend the sardines, taramasalata, and zucchini dish. Next to O! Hamos! Tavern, it was my favorite place.

Day 3 Milos Itinerary

Top things to do in plaka.

For your third day on the Greek Island of Milos, head over to the main town & Plaka Castle! It is the capital of Milos, packed with history and lots to do!

Travel to Plaka from Adamas is easy by bus but is best if you have a rental car.

Some of the best things to do in Plaka is to first visit the Venetian Castle of Milos !

📍 There is a free parking lot that I saved on the map of Milos !

Venetian Castle Milos

The next stop after the castle can be to wander the village and shops of Plaka. Spend as much time here as you want before making your way to the Archaeological Museum of Milos .

Best Lunch Spot in Plaka

For a great lunch spot in Plaka, head over to Avli- Milos . Here you will find a variety of traditional Greek dishes with a twist. Flavorful and creative, I would highly recommend checking this place out!

Avli-Milos does not take reservations , so as a backup, you can always check out Macros Xoiros !

Late Afternoon

After lunch take your car or walk downhill to wander the Catacombs of Milos! For reference, it is open daily (except Tuesdays) from 9:00 AM — 6:45 PM.

The entrance fee is 4 euros for those under 65 years old, and 2 for those over. EU students visit FREE.

Next, make your way from the Catacombs of Milos to the Town of Trypiti and visit the Ancient Theater of Milos !

DAY TRIP IDEA: Rather spend your day on an organized tour? Check out the Electric Bike Tour of Plaka and Pollonia + Sarakinko Beach!

Visit Colorful Fishing Village – Klima

Colorful Fishing Village Klima in Milos Greece

Once you have exhausted yourself all day in Plaka, a great place for downtime is in Klima! This picturesque fishing village is the most colorful on the island. Situated at the end of a long winding road from the village of Trypiti.

The bus does not take you to Klima but will take you to Trypiti. If you did rent a car, then I would drive there.

If you wanted to walk down from Trypiti, you could. Going back might not be as easy with the inclines.

Once you are in Klima, you can get pictures of the village or relax at the beach. It is a great place to soak up those vacation vibes.

Best Dinner Restaurant in Klima

The most highly-rated restaurant in the tiny fishing village of Klima, with good reason, is Astakas Cafe Restaurant .

It is seaside with incredible views of the ocean. This restaurant actually DOES take reservations, so get one!

How Many Days Do You Need in Milos?

How many days do you really need in Milos? I suggest 3 nights at minimum, but 5 nights if you have time to spare.

The boutique hotels in Milos are next level. Take my advice on this and book early! Milos is really on the map this year.

The island is pretty big with over 75 beaches, so there is plenty to do. In other smaller islands, such as Symi, you really only need a day.

Milos Island is different, I needed more time here and plan to return someday soon!

When is the Best Time to Visit Milos?

The best time to visit Milos is September! The season will start to come to a close so the prices will be better than in the high season.

Also if you don’t want to battle a lot of people I recommend coming to Milos in September.

If visiting in the summer months of July & August is your only option, you will still have a fabulous time, it is just better in September from my experience.

Pro Tip:  Even though I found solo travel to be super safe, I ALWAYS recommend getting   travel insurance  to avoid any mishaps. Lost luggage or getting sick can happen at any time.

Milos FAQ’s

If you are traveling solo in Milos and don’t rent a car, I recommend staying in Apollonia or Adamas Port. These two options will give you the best access to public transportation in Milos.

The main attractions in Milos are Sarakiniko Beach, the colorful fishing village of Klima, and the ancient town of Plaka. Milos offers many beautiful beaches of crystal blue waters and opportunities to relax.

The most popular way to travel to Milos from Athens is by ferry. In the peak summer season, there are several weekly ferry crossings. Another way to reach Milos from Athens is to fly into the Milos airport.

I would recommend staying in Milos for a minimum of 3 nights. To see everything the island offers, I recommend staying 5 nights.

The best way to get around Milos is by renting a car. Milos does have a public transit bus system, but the schedule is very limited and will not take you to every attraction on the island.

If you travel by ferry between Milos and Athens, it is around 3 hours, but it could be as long as 6 hours.

The best restaurant in Milos is O! Hamos! Tavern, followed by Medusa. For more information on the best restaurants in Milos, continue reading.

Milos is arguably the Greek island with the most diverse landscape with picture-perfect fishing villages, moon-like cliffs, and turquoise hidden coves. It might not be as famous as Mykonos or Santorini, but it’s certainly getting more and more popular. This was the most anticipated stop on our Greece island hopping trip, and we managed to spend 4 days here with only 1 day of driving and saw most of the major attractions. Here are the top things to do + some essential information:

How to Get to Milos Greece

around sarakiniko beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

Milos is part of the Cyclades Islands, which are not too far from Athens . Depending on your preference, you can get a ferry from Piraeus port or take a domestic flight to Milos:

Athens Milos Boat

There are 5 different companies that offer ferry services from Athens to Milos. The average duration is around 3 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes, with slower ferries that can take up to 7 or 15 hours.

We took the Knossos Palace from the Minoan Lines at 10am, arriving in Milos at 2:30pm.

I use Ferry Hopper to book all my ferry tickets!

Flying to Milos

There are daily flights from Athens to Milos. The flight takes 40-45 minutes, and the airport is 5km from the Adamas Port.

Should I fly to Milos or take a ferry?

Personally, I prefer the ferry as the price remains the same even when I booked last minute. Also, it’s more comfortable and people who have a car can take it onboard as well. That said, don’t expect to have good data signal throughout the ride and the WiFi was not free on the one we took.

Another consideration is that there is no luggage limit for the ferry and it’s easy to reach your accommodation if it’s by the port.

Milos Essential Information

A short history of milos.

Milos has been inhabited since antiquity, its volcanic rocks and obsidian deposit attracting settlers who use the latter to make tools. It is also the center of the Cycladic culture in the Bronze age and was inhabited by Mycenaean, Dorians (from Sparta), was caught in the Peloponnesian War, and eventually under Roman times.

streets of plaka milos greece - laugh travel eat

The capital changed from where Pollonia is now to the fishing village of Klima by the time medieval time rolls around. It was subjected to many pirates raid during Byzantine time with Venetian taking over after the fall of Constantinople in 1204.

Between the 16th to 18th centuries, it was ruled by the Ottoman until the revolution in the 1820s, becoming a part of Greece in 1830. It was used as a naval base during WWII by the British and French.

Is Milos Worth Visiting?

sunrise at sarakiniko beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

Yes, Milos is worth visiting because of the dreamy landscape and also for its history. Did you know that this is the birthplace of the famous Venice of Milos? Several luxury brands also shot their promotional campaign on the island because of its surreal landscape, which really says something about its beauty.

How many days do you need on Milos?

Milos might not be very big, but to see it properly, you would need to drive around and that takes time. I’d say a minimum of 3 days and up to a week if you want to hit everything or relax on a beach.

We did the highlight of Milos in 4 days, although I wish we have one more day to see all the cultural sights as well.

Is Milos too touristy?

Milos is definitely a little touristy but I would not say it’s anywhere near Mykonos or Santorini. If you are looking to rent a vehicle, pre-booking especially during the summer high season is the best policy.

Transport in Milos

To see Milos, the best way is to rent a vehicle and drive yourself around. There are buses on the island, but they don’t reach all corners of the island and the schedule can be sparse.

public bus adamas milos greece - laugh travel eat

Milos’ main town and port is Adamas, and I’d recommend staying there for ease of travel. Other popular places to stay are Plaka with is a short drive (uphill) to the northwest) and the beach town on the northeastern tip Pollonia.

We ended up renting an ATV for a day to drive around the island. While a lot of the important attractions are on the north coast of the island, there are also some that are in the south and remote. This means you either have to drive all the time or join tours. The best way is to take a boat trip! See more on what we do under Milos itinerary.

Renting a vehicle on Milos

You can rent a car, scooter, or ATV on Milos. The roads can be steep and narrow on Milos, so parking can be difficult with a car. The steep roads also make driving a scooter dangerous, especially for those who are not familiar with riding one.

driving in milos greece - laugh travel eat

ATV is arguably the best option, but do be careful on the bends and drive slowly! Alternatively, you can join a tour take would take you around the island

The average price for rental is around 50 Euros, but expect it to basically double during the summer season. We walked around Adamas, the main port, to shop for prices and availabilities. Most of the reputable ones are booked out, and we ended up renting a 150cc ATV for one day for 95 Euros from Safari – Rent Motorbikes . You’d need:

  • International driving license

There is no young driver’s charge as long as you are over 18.

Here are some rental place recommendations:

  • Apollonas Sunshine
  • MelianCars – Rent a Car
  • Enterprise Rent-A-Car – Milos

Driving on Milos

Driving on Milos is are along occasionally steep and windy roads, especially when you need to go up the hills and down to the beach. There are some fairly windy roads, so it is a little dangerous.

If you’re not an experienced driver, I’d advise against driving here!

Buses on Milos

Milos have 6 bus lines that connect the Adamas port to various villages and attractions:

  • Adamas – Triovasalos – Plaka – Tripiti – Katakomves
  • Adamas – Pachena – Papafragas – Flakopi – Pollonia
  • Adamas – Zefiria – Paliochori
  • Adamas – Hivadolimni – Provatas – Camping – Airport
  • Adamas – Sarakiniko
  • Adamas – Firiplaka – Tsigrado

public bus adamas milos greece - laugh travel eat

This is the bus schedule from August 2022. The buses are more frequent in the summer season:

How is the WiFi/Signal on Milos?

The WiFi signal and data work pretty well on Milos. It works better than in Athens and there’s no problem on the Adamas port. Don’t expect the signal to last when you’re on the road or on the sea as it does get spotty.

The important thing is to pre-plan your driving and navigation route.

Things to do in Milos

There are three main types of things to do in Milos: seeing the natural sights, the fishing villages, and the cultural attraction. But I’ll group the attractions into locations:

view of adamas milos greece - laugh travel eat

Adamas is the main port and therefore the largest town in Milos. There are a few museums and most amenities are clustered around here:

Agia Triada

The Church of the Holy Trinity looks like a typical church in this corner of Greece with its white walls and bell tower. But it dates back one thousand years and was renovated several times. The current iteration is 600 years old from Frankish time. Don’t miss the courtyard’s mosaics even if you don’t have time to go in the church.

Ecclesiastical Museum

The Agia Triada (Holy Trinity Church) is also home to the Ecclesiastical Museum in Milos. The museum houses some rare icons, paintings, and epitaphios (wood-carved lecterns and stands).

Milos Mining Museum

The Milos Mining Museum was built in the late 90s to educate the public on both the mining and geological history of the island. It consists of two floors and a basement with a rich collection of obsidian artefacts as well. They have some geo walk maps if you’re looking for recommendations.

World War II Refuge Museum

The World War II Refuge Museum is also just known as the bomb shelter. It’s a former bomb shelter turn art gallery. Although it’s a short and interesting visit, many note that it remains unopen during its advertised opening time.

Entry fee: 2 euros

Plaka is the other main town on Milos and it’s actually the capital of the island! It’s high on the hill and only a short drive from Adamas (it’s not walkable though).

plaka from afar milos greece - laugh travel eat

The town is arguably most famous for the Venetian Castle ruin. But if you take the time to explore the hilly settlement you’ll find its charms as well despite being lost in its meandering streets. There are several museums for history buffs as well:

Note: the town has no-driving hours. The best thing to do is to park at the designated parking lot (well signposted) by the foot of the town and walk around.

Plaka Castle (Kastro/Castello)

The Plaka Castle is also the Venetian castle, which is atop the hill at the highest point of the island. It was indeed built by the Venetians during their rule to fortify the village. There is a church on the hill just below the ruin which is the most popular photo spot for sunset.

hiking up to plaka castle plaka milos greece - laugh travel eat

The way to get up is a little confusing, which is typical of Plaka. There are two paths from the village to go up to the stairs. Neither of them is marked, but one is by a pretty archway-like house with a potted plant, and the other is at the very end of the street.

plaka castle plaka milos greece - laugh travel eat

The stairs also split up here and there, but there is an arrow that vaguely points you up!

Panagia Thalassitra

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nam | Traveller Hiker Foodie (@laughtraveleat)

Panagia Thalassitra is the name of the church that is just below the castle. What is most interesting about it aside from the location is that the bell tower frame is made from pumice, which is most likely mined locally.

Archeaological Museum Plaka

The Archaeological Museum in Plaka is the perfect place to learn about the history of Milos. It was established in 1985 in a neo-classical building in the town square. It’s especially famous for the collection of Cycladic art and artefacts from the Bronze Age. There are 4 rooms in total and you can find a copy of the famous Venus of Milos statue here!

Address: Plaka 848 00, Greece

Opening times:  Sun – Mon, Weds – Thurs 8:30 – 15:30; Fri 14:00 – 22:00; Sat 9:00 – 22:00

Admission fee: 2 Euros

Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum in Plaka is a small museum established in the 60s to showcase life on Milos. It covers the way of life, traditional costumes, and household life from the 17th century until now. It’s next to the Panagia Korfiatissa Church, which means you can see both in one go!

Note: it’s temporarily closed as of Nov 2022

Panagia Korfiatissa

Aside from Panagia Thalassitra, there is also another church in Plaka. Panagia Thalassitra is along the main street of town along the cliffside with an intricate mosaic and the classic plaka pavement in front.

Sarakiniko Beach

sunrise at sarakiniko beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

Sarakiniko Beach does not only sound pretty, it is the most beautiful beach on Milos on the north coast. Calling it a beach might be weird because the area is made from limestone cliffs that formed during a period of volcanism on the island.

iconic archsarakiniko beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

The erosion has formed strange arches and pillars on the beach and the lack of vegetation gives it a moon-like quality. The area is huge and the most famous spot is an archway that guards a small rock pool where people like to cliff jump and swim back up.

around sarakiniko beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

But if you walk further, you’ll be rewarded with a crowdless cliff. There are quite a few people waiting for sunrise, but a lot of them leave immediately after and we got the place to ourselves until after 8 am for an hour or so.

bus station sarakiniko beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

Note: the rocks are smooth to walk on for the most part, but if you plan on cliff jumping, wearing wetshoes is a must.

Papafragkas

Papafragkas milos greece - laugh travel eat

Papafragkas is a narrow cove on the northern coastline of Milos known for its turquoise water. To get there on land, you’ll have to look out for the small parking lot entrance on the way from Adamas to Pollonia and then hike down a steep path.

going down Papafragkas milos greece - laugh travel eat

There is a little beach at the base of the cliff but it’s more dirt-sand than sand. But the cove itself is beautiful with shallow water, perfect for photos and swimming!

car park going in Papafragkas milos greece - laugh travel eat

Here is what the car park would look like so you can find it!

Sikia Cave is an open-roof cave on the east coast of Milos Island. It’s famous for the narrow entrance that’s only 5m high and 20m wide. Only half day or full day boat trip to Sikia and Kleftiko would take you inside on a small boat.the other boat trips all only stop at the entrance.

sikia cove milos greece - laugh travel eat

It is most famous for its open roof view with a small beach on one corner.

Even if you can’t go in, you can admire the Santorini lava as well as chalk and tuff layers.

Kleftiko milos greece - laugh travel eat-2

Kleftiko is also known as Bandits’ Lair and is a cove with numerous limestone and chalk pillars and crystal clear water. You can only get there by boat, which is why it made for a great place for pirates to hide.

Kleftiko milos greece - laugh travel eat

It’s a great place for swimming and snorkeling!

gerakas Beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

Gerakas might be referred to as a beach, but it’s more of a dramatic limestone cliff with several small landslide trails that collects into a small bank of sand. It contrasts beautifully with the turquoise water, which seems more green here and looked like molten glass.

Again, this is not accessible by road and only via the sea route.

Tsigrado Beach

Tsigrado Beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

Tsigrado Beach is most famous for its inaccessibility on the south coast of Milos. The way down is only possible on a long ladder and the beach itself is relatively small. The drive there is not too short from Adamas, so we only saw it from afar on a full day boat trip.

Thiorichia Beach (Old Sulfur Mines)

old sulfur mines milos greece - laugh travel eat-3

The Thiorichia Beach is home to the old sulfur mine of Milos on the island’s east coast. While sulfur has been mined around the region since antiquity, this mine started in the mid-19th century and stopped in the 60s.

old sulfur mines milos greece - laugh travel eat

Now, the mine has been abandoned and you can see the abandoned building and the telltale red and yellow tint to the cliff. Given that the buildings were not protected or preserved, it’s best to just to look at it and not attempt to climb it.

Note: driving there is along a small dirt road, so it’s only accessible on ATV or a jeep.

Poliegos is an island on the northeast side of Milos and an uninhabited island known for its unbelievably blue water. Interestingly, the name of the island means many goats, as it is where farmers leave their goats for pasture.

poliegos milos greece - laugh travel eat

The blue water is surrounded by white cliffs making it a perfect stop for boat trips, which is the only way to visit the island.

Explore Fishing Villages

There are some picture-perfect fishing villages around Milos and it’s worth visiting to get a sense of the local life and also for some amazing photos. In fact, some of them remind me of Cinque Terre with their colourful houses, except they are even smaller!

Klima is a small village most known for the stripe of white houses with colourful doors right by the sea. But did you know that this was the ancient harbour of Milos during antiquity?

klima milos greece - laugh travel eat

Do note that the pavement in front of the houses is narrow with concrete jetties jutting out. It can get very slippery and crowded.

Personally, I was fairly okay with taking photos of it from our boat trip.

Mandrakia milos greece - laugh travel eat

Mandrakia reminds me of Vernazza of Cinque Terre. It’s a bigger fishing village than Klima that is spread over a headland with a small nature harbour. From the car park, you get the perfect view of the ring of houses and fishing boat.

Mandrakia milos greece - laugh travel eat

It is also famous for the Medusa Restaurant which is often crowded and it’s best to make a reservation when visiting during high season. We didn’t get to eat there but we saw the octopus drying on washing lines. It’s not too far from the church in the small town square, so you’ll be sure to see it.

medusa restaurant mandrakia milos greece - laugh travel eat

Across from the village is the Tourkothalassa Beach, which has the signature turquoise water of Greece.

Firopotamos

Firopotamos milos greece - laugh travel eat-2

We visited Firopotamos on a friend’s recommendation and it was a gorgeous village and the biggest of the three. It’s towards the northwest corner of Milos and the road to get down is very steep and parking difficult.

Firopotamos milos greece - laugh travel eat

That said, I do enjoy the village the most because not only is there a beach, the church across on the far end is surrounded by dramatic volcanic rock!

Don’t miss the Agios Nikolaos, which is the best place to look back at the village and the dramatic mountain.

Catacombs of Milos

The catacombs of Milos is right by the Trypiti village and an early-Christian monument that dates back to sometime between the 1st to the 5th century. It is not only a burial site but also a place of worship and a safe refuge from Roman prosecution.

Three sections have been uncovered, but visitors can only access section B.

Opening times: Weds – Mon 9:00 – 18:45

Admission fee: 4 euros, 65+ 2 euros, Free to EU student

The Ancient Theatre

The Ancient Theater is near the catacombs and makes for a good combined trip. It’s an open-air structure that hosts summer theater festivals. It is not kept in good condition, but it’s worth a stop if you’re already nearby.

Have some amazing seafood

Since we’re on an island, seafood is definitely a must. Since we had a tight schedule, we didn’t eat in as many places as we’d like, but here are the places we like in Adamas:

  • Volta Restaurant
  • Yankos cafe restaurant
  • Barko Restaurant

Milos Itinerary

While we didn’t do everything on the list, we tried our best and here is a 4-day Milos itinerary that is part of our Greek island hopping trip:

Day 1 in Milos

milos tour ukraine

We arrived in Milos at 2pm, so we walked straight to our Tilomachos Studios to check in.

Lunch and pick up rental car

gyros of milos adamas milos greece - laugh travel eat

After checking in, we went into town for some gyros at Gyros of Milos by the port. It took us a while to find a decent rental place, but if you have pre-booked, head straight to Plaka.

Alternatively, you can get a bus or even a taxi to Plaka.

Plaka: Museums and Castle sunset

Plaka gets increasingly busier as the time approaches sunset, but not so much before that at 3-4pm. You can see one of the museums (or two) before heading up to the castle for a sunset view.

Dinner at Volta Restaurant

Day 2 in milos.

Day 2 is a jam packed day for us because we drove around chasing photospots. You can take it easy but if you on’y want to rent a car for a short time, then it’s a good one to follow:

Sarakiniko sunrise

sunrise at sarakiniko beach milos greece - laugh travel eat

We got up early and drove to Sarakiniko for sunrise. It’s absolutely beautiful and worth it if you want to see the colours.

From Sarakiniko we headed to Papafragkas. I wouldn’t say it’s a good place to suntan, and it got really hot, so we headed back to Adamas.

Lunch at Yankos cafe restaurant

Yankos cafe restaurant adamas milos greece - laugh travel eat

If you can, head straight to Mandrakia and eat lunch at Madusa restaurant. We needed a nap and a siesta, so we had lunch at Yankos Cafe back in Adamas. But the shrimp sanganaki pasta was good.

If you’re visiting during the summer, I recommend taking a siesta because it can get incredibly hot. You can always pop by a beach if you prefer!

Fishing village hop: Mandrakia and Firopotamos

Explore the two fishing villages before returning the car rental – we only used ours for one day and returned it at 6:30pm.

Dinner at Barko Restaurant

Barko Restaurant milos greece - laugh travel eat

Barko restaurant was recommended by a local friend and a nice little place with outdoor seatings. The portion sizes are generous and there are also lots of cute cats.

Day 3 in Milos Full Day Boat Trip in Milos

We decided on booking a full day boat trip in Milos which would take us past all the major attraction on the coastline, even if it doesn’t stop everywhere.

boat companies adamas milos greece - laugh travel eat

After shopping around (which does take up valuable time), we settled on Aquattica. All of them are similar in itinerary and offering, but Aquattica had the cheapest price and also cater to dietary restrictions.

Here is how the day out looked:

red rocks milos greece - laugh travel eat

  • We met in front of the company’s office at 8:40 am, then leaves at 9am on the boat.
  • Klima village – we headed out and saw the famous village first, we also got close to the volcanic red rocks
  • Sikia cave – didn’t go in but saw the Santorini lava as well as chalk and tuff layer
  • 10:30 we had breakfast – which was chicken wrap with ham. Because my friend can’t have that, she got a salad
  • Kleftiko – we arrived at 11 for some swimming
  • Gerakas – also where we had lunch. It was a delightful chicken dish with a couscous salad side.
  • Sulfur mine and Tsigrado Beach – view from the sea!
  • Poliegos – it was surreal to swim in the blue water!

We also saw Sarakiniko from afar – and the sailing boat was nice although it is a little more crowded than I’d like.

Dinner and pack

We had gyros again and spent the night packing and relaxing!

Day 4 in Milos

Our ferry for Ios left at 6:20am, so it was a very early checkout for us.

Best place to stay in Milos 590/22

Where to stay in Milo? I recommend staying at the Adamas Port unless you’ve planned in advance to rent a car and drive for the whole trip. The other suggestions would be Plaka or some boutique hotels on the island:

Adamas Accommodation

Budget: We stayed at Tilomachos and were very happy with the room and location. Christina Rooms are further from town but have really lovely rooms.

Midrange: Milos Inn is in the center of Adamas with well-appointed bedrooms. If you prefer studios, Moschoula Studio and Eris Studios are both great.

Splurge: Casa Aiora is an entire apartment with a garden and terrace, suitable for friends and family. Acro Solium Suite is one of the best reviewed option in the port town.

Plaka Accommodation

Splurge: Sunset Nest is a one bedroom apartment in the heart of Plaka with a rooftop terrace.

Unique Milos Hotels

Budget: Panorama Hotel in Klima makes for a great stay in a small fishing town.

Midrange: Villa Windmill is a unique option with windmill in the center of the island.

Splurge: Hotel Milos Sea Resort has a private balcony and pool villa rooms, but you’ll have to drive to get around. Volcano Luxury Suites Milos is by the south coast with great staff and near the beach.

milos tour ukraine

Located in the heart of the Cycladic islands , planning a 2, 3 or 4 days in Milos itinerary is an excellent way to see this up-and-coming, dreamy, volcanic island.

Neighboring Santorini is easily the most popular fan destination for Greek island enthusiasts, but Milos Island is coming up quickly in popularity. From its picturesque beaches to unique geology, the island of Milos deserves a spot on your trip to the Greek islands.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Milos?

Wondering how many days to spend in Milos? The island itself is quite small, taking just around an hour to reach one end to the other. Although it is small, there are a wide array of things to do.

From unique beaches to spectacular views and more cultural exploration, you’ll definitely find a spot that steals your heart. I’d recommend an ideal 4 days to get the most out of your time on the island.

With that being said, 1 day in Milos is enough if you’re island hopping and want to see multiple islands during your trip. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the main town, Plaka, as well as soak up some sun at one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

With 2 days in Milos, you’ll explore more of the history of the island, wander one of the most unique rock formations in the Cyclades, and experience local village life on the island.

For those spending 3 days, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a tour and spend more time at the beach. And finally, if you’re spending 4 days, you’ll get to dive even deeper into this unique island.

Beautiful Milos

Getting To & Around Milos

Getting to milos.

Chances are if you’re visiting the Milos, you’ll be arriving by ferry. There is an airport on the island but it only services routes to and from Athens and flight costs are much higher than ferry tickets whether you’re coming from another island or the Greek capital.

There are different ferry options depending on where you’re coming from, and costs can range from around €40-100 for a ferry ticket depending on the speed of the ferry. You can check ferry prices here .

If you’re interested in flying from Athens, expect to pay at least double that round trip for your flight to Milos.

For those arriving by ferry, you’ll arrive at the port, in the town of Adamantas. Adamantas (also called Adamas) is a small town located in the northern part of the island and is conveniently located close to popular destinations for accommodation and sightseeing.

From here, there are plenty of bus options making it possible to easily continue onward to your destination.

The Milos airport is located in the central part of the island and has bus transport connections with the rest of the island.

Getting Around Milos

When planning your trip to Milos, you’ll likely wonder what the best way to get around the island is. My recommendation for the most flexibility during your trip is to either rent a car (you can browse Rentalcars.com for options) or another vehicle during your stay.

Driving on the Greek islands is quite laid back, the area is very open, and drivers tend to be more forgiving than in big cities.

You can either rent a car, motorcycle, or 4-wheel (ATV). ATVs tend to be the most popular on the islands as you don’t need a motorcycle license, they’re easy to drive and are the most cost-efficient option of the three.

With a motorcycle or ATV, you’ll also be able to go to more off-road destinations on the island which is ideal if you’re an adventure seeker.

Regardless of the vehicle, I highly recommend reserving in advance as prices go higher and higher leading up to the summer season, and are steep if you rent once arriving at the island.

If, for whatever reason, renting a vehicle isn’t in the cards for your Milos itinerary, the island does have a great bus system. Buses are going throughout the island to the most popular destinations as well as less popular destinations, so you won’t be left behind if you need to take a bus.

Tickets range from €1.60 – €2.00 depending on the route you take and can be purchased on the bus. Bus schedules can be found here .

2, 3 or 4-Day Milos Itinerary

Whether you’re spending 2 days or 4 days, the Milos is a Greek island destination rich in breathtaking sunsets, crystalline water, friendly people, and rejuvenating air.

The good thing is that the island is quite small, so most things can easily be rearranged on this itinerary depending on the length of your stay and interests.

This itinerary offers something for every kind of traveler, and afterwards, you’ll be waiting to return next summer.

Day 1 –  Fyriplaka Beach & Plaka

Fyriplaka beach.

Upon arrival on the island of Milos, one of the first things you’ll likely be keen to do is to head to the beach. Like most of the beaches on this itinerary, your first stop, Fyriplaka Beach is located on the southern part of the island as this is where you’ll find the most idyllic beaches.

Fyriplaka Beach is a key part of any Milos itinerary due to its wondrous views, water depths at different levels depending on your comfort level, and volcanic rock surrounding you.

This beach is great for families due to the shallow water areas and has a beach cafe by the water. Either bring your own chairs/towel/umbrella or rent from the beach cafe.

Keep in mind that renting chairs on the islands can be quite costly, especially at the popular beaches (expect to pay on average €30 for a pair of chairs and one umbrella on Milos.)

Fyriplaka beach is located around 22 km. away from Adamantas (the port) and also has nearby bus connections.

Fyriplaka Beach

Almost every Greek island has its main town, usually with winding steps up to a peak where you’ll find a church and breathtaking sunsets. Milos’ main town is Plaka, stunningly placed on top of a high hill on the island.

Here you’ll find lovely artisanal shops (clothing, jewelry, pottery, etc.), bars of all sorts, restaurants, and idyllic views from every corner. Keep in mind that cars cannot enter the village due to the narrow streets. But this only adds to the picturesque atmosphere, making Plaka a great destination in Milos to start your trip.

After spending the morning/afternoon at Fyriplaka beach, head to Plaka to wander the town, visit the Venetian Castle, enjoy a local Milos dinner, and be taken to a dream world by witnessing a Cycladic sunset.

For dinner, I recommend heading to the restaurant Mavros Xoiros . Mavros Xoiros or black pigs is a wonderful restaurant in Plaka offering local dishes. The veggie dishes are fresh and vibrant, and the meat dishes are typical to the island with locally sourced meat.

After dinner, make your way to the Church of Panagia Korfiatissa and maybe grab a takeaway cocktail from nearby to watch the sunset. The sunset from the church viewpoint perched above the cliff makes you feel like you’re in a painting, and quite simply, nothing beats it. Be sure to arrive early enough as it can become extremely busy!

Plaka on Milos island

Day 2 – Sarakiniko, Ancient Theater of Milos, Catacombs & Pollonia Fishing Village

Sarakiniko beach.

Easily one of the most identifiable and recognizable landmarks on Milos is Sarakiniko.

Sarakiniko Beach is located on the northeastern part of the island and looks like pieces of the moon have been picked up and placed on Earth. Milos is one of the most volcanic islands in Greece, and this lunar landscape proudly represents this. If you visit any beach in Milos, make it this one.

From its long, white, smooth rocks encapsulating the sea, to watching brave divers jump the cliffs, Sarakiniko is a must-see and visit for anyone planning to visit Milos.

I only recommend cliff jumping from the small cliffs (the higher ones are extremely high and dangerous) and swimming around the surrounding areas for a swim made of aquatic dreams.

For those with 2 days or more, your day will begin at Sarakiniko, as it’s easily one of the most popular spots to visit on the island. As the day goes on, it gets busier and busier, so the morning is the best time to visit. If you’re feeling awake and adventurous, try heading there for sunrise for a real treat.

Sarakiniko beach

Ancient Theater of Milos & Catacombs

What’s a Greek Island itinerary without ancient archaeological sightseeing? After spending the morning at Milos’ moon, Sarakiniko, you’ll make your way to the Ancient Theater of Milos.

The Ancient Theater of Milos is quite literally its name, an ancient theater built-in the 5th century BCE during the Hellenistic period that once hosted festivals.

Located about 5 km away from the town of Adamantas and completely constructed in marble, the Ancient Theater is an ideal spot to learn more about the history of the island as well as the role Milos played in Ancient Greek history.

The theater is free to visit and wander and is usually quite quiet, making it a wonderful place to surround yourself with the history of Milos.

About 500 meters away from the theater you’ll find the Catacombs en route to the little town of Klima. The Catacombs of Milos date back to the 1st – 5th century and are easily some of the most important discovered worldwide.

If interested, the Catacombs are a great spot to head to after exploring the ancient theater to further explore Milos’ history.

Ancient Theater of Milos

Pollonia Fishing Village

A great way to wind down after exploring ancient Milos is to head to the small fishing village of Pollonia, about 13 km away.

Pollonia is easily one of the prettiest fishing villages on the island, small enough to get around but also big enough to have a good amount of area to explore.

With colorful fishing boats by the sea, waterfront taverns, and classic white Cycladic architecture, Pollonia is a solid choice to have a wander and some dinner before heading back to your accommodation. And if you haven’t seen enough of beautiful natural wonders, the Papafragas Beach and Caves are an interesting place to stop at along the way.

Pollonia Fishing Village

Day 3 – Tour of Choice & Provotas Beach

Geological tour or kleftiko boat tour.

With 3 days in Milos, you’ll have the ideal amount of time to explore the island further by doing a tour. My recommendation for tours on the island is a geological tour or tour of Kleftiko Cove.

A geological tour such as this half-day tour is a great option for those wanting to learn more about the island’s rich geology, as it’s the most volcanic island of the Cyclades.

Milos has a very distinct type of geology due to the way it was formed and a geological tour is a really unique way to learn more about this as well as get more of a particular experience during your stay. Expect to spend around 2-4 hours on a geological tour.

A tour of Kleftiko Cove such as on this half-day tour or this full-day cruise is a great option for those interested in the popular spot Kleftiko. Kleftiko is one of the most popular spots to visit on the island but unfortunately can only be visited by boat.

Herein lies the Kleftiko Cove tour, where you’ll be taken around the standing rock formations surrounded by turquoise Agean waters as well as given the opportunity to swim and maybe snorkel.

Tours usually leave around Adamantas, can last for half a day or a full day, and end with time to swim on a nearby beach.

Kleftiko

Provatas Beach

If you took part in the geological tour and have a keen interest in spending time at a beach every day of your trip or would like to explore further after you Kleftiko day trip, head to Provotas Beach.

Provotas Beach is located on the southwestern side of Milos and is an incredibly calm beach to wind down from the day and have a swim.

The sand is soft, the water is shallow and there are a few restaurants nearby, making it another great option for a beach if you’re visiting with children.

Alternatively, spend your evening exploring the idyllic village of Mandrakia – perfect for watching a gorgeous Cycladic sunset which is, obviously, one of the best things to do in Milos.

Provatas Beach

Day 4 – Greek Breakfast, Paleochori Beach & Sirocco Restaurant

Breakfast at kivotos ton gefseon.

If you’re spending 4 days in Milos, this will be your final day on this peaceful Cycladic island and you’ll begin it by heading back to the village of Pollonia. Pollonia has Kivotos ton Gefseon , one of the best cafes and breakfast spots on the island and is a must-visit during your trip.

From savory and sweet pies to cooked breakfast and local groceries for purchase, the coffee and food are just as good as the surroundings to enjoy it. With a small garden area with plenty of room to sit, Kivotos ton Gefseon is an ideal spot to start your morning and plan the day.

Paleochori Beach

The 4th and final day of this Milos itinerary will be spent at the volcanic Paleochori Beach. Easily the biggest and most colorful beach on the island, Paleochori is probably the best beach on Milos to head to if you’re looking to stay for the day.

The main part of the beach is long and developed with multiple restaurant options (one of which you will head to for dinner on this itinerary), and is conveniently located to shelter from the northern winds that most of the island experiences.

With red and yellow rocks surrounding the area, Paleochori Beach is likely one you’ll be talking about for months to come (until you return!).

If you’re feeling adventurous during your visit, head past Sirroco restaurant, through the caves, and keep feeling around the depth of the sand by the shore. If you’re lucky, you’ll find natural hot springs, and you’re in for a treat.

Palepchori beach

Sirocco for Dinner

One of the things that Paleochori Beach is most known for, is that it’s the home to the restaurant Sirroco .  Sirocco is located directly on the beach and offers unique local dishes, fresh seafood, and its name to fame, dishes cooked in a volcanic oven underneath the sand.

Not too far below ground level, a large amount of the menu at Sirroco is cooked using geothermal energy from within the sandpit.

A lot of dishes on the menus throughout restaurants on Milos are quite typical and easy to find throughout Greece, but it’s an easy guess that you haven’t had them cooked using geothermal energy!

The atmosphere is also quite lovely and makes for the perfect place to spend your last evening in Milo watching the sunset, and reminiscing on memories that will likely last a lifetime.

I also recommend making a reservation for Sirroco in advance as it’s incredibly popular and books up very quickly during the summer months that it’s open.

Where to Stay on Milos

Kapetan Tasos Suites – This aparthotel on Milos is an excellent option for those who want their own space on the island while still having the amenities of a hotel. They have a number of apartments available (ranging from studios to multiple bedrooms) that can suit all kinds of group sizes.

Milos Breeze Boutique Hotel – This boutique hotel in the town of Pollonia is a great option for those looking for a luxury escape on Milos. They have a number of beautiful rooms available, a wonderful swimming pool for guests to enjoy and some rooms even include a terrace with sea views.

Semiramis Guesthouse – This quaint guesthouse is an excellent choice for budget travellers looking for their own space on Milos. It’s well-located for exploring the island and all rooms have a private bathroom, air-conditioning and a mini fridge.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Milos hotels!

If you’re searching for a unique Greek island experience and yearning to head to an island off the beaten path, Milos is without a doubt the island for you. Its healing sunsets and peaceful landscape are an ideal place to get away and rejuvenate, and its pristine beaches and exciting culture make it the perfect place to let go.
