3-night Baja cruise on Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance gets the nod for having a year-round schedule of short escapes to Mexico.

Carnival Cruise Line 's west coast Mexico cruises sail from the port of Long Beach, which is a fun destination in its own right, with beaches, water sports and the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Carnival Radiance (formerly Carnival Victory) underwent a complete refit in 2021, adding a dedicated comedy club, top-deck water attractions and the first-ever chicken joint from Shaquille O'Neal, aptly named Big Chicken .

The ship goes to Ensenada and back with one fun day at sea. Water sports and whale watching in winter are among the top activities in Ensenada for Carnival cruisers. For a local lunch in port, order fish tacos; Ensenada claims to have invented the dish. Some also claim Ensenada is the original home of the margarita. Drink enough of those, and it won't matter if it's true or not. If margaritas aren't your thing, there are popular wineries in port worth checking out.

Who should go : It's no secret that Carnival's Fun Ships are known as party ships. This short hop to Mexico is ideal for residents of the Western states looking for an escape any time of year. The ship's atmosphere is enthusiastic and fun, which spills into Ensenada on the single port day of the cruise.

4-night Baja cruise with Catalina Island on Disney Wonder

Disney Wonder is one of Disney Cruise Line 's oldest and smallest ships, carrying only 2,700 passengers. However, it's packed with Disney adventures, including a musical stage production of "Frozen," character meet-ups and the most family-friendly cabins at sea. Wonder sails to Mexico from San Diego during the fall and winter.

Not every four-night cruise on Wonder includes Catalina Island, but if you can snag one that does, it's a huge bonus of family fun. Activities in the port of Avalon on Catalina include an amazing zip-line course of five lines. Soaring along the island's hillsides 600 feet above the beaches below, the adventure course takes over two hours to complete.

If your crew isn't into highspeed zipping, try a backcountry bison expedition or a relaxing day at the beach. Catalina is a charming island with a European feel, memorable food and a fascinating history. The second port on the itinerary is Ensenada, where the wildlife-watching or beach fun can continue.

Who should go: Disney Wonder is an ideal ship for family cruise travel from the West Coast. Features include the Marvel Superhero Academy inside the Disney Oceaneer Club, the activity space for kids. You'll have family-friendly accommodations on board, most with split bathrooms (one with toilet and sink, the other with bath-shower combo and sink). Parents have plenty of opportunities to enjoy a night out without the kids, dining at the adults-only Palo specialty restaurant or sampling an adult beverage at the After Hours entertainment district.

5-night Mexico cruise with Cabo overnight on Majestic Princess

Princess Cruises ' Majestic Princess is one of the largest ships that seasonally visits Mexico from Los Angeles. The vessel, which was originally built for the Chinese market, has been Americanized, but it still features some nods that include upscale onboard shopping boutiques like Coach and Bulgari, plus a relaxing enclosed top-deck lounge with gathering spaces and faux topiaries.

The ship sails five-night voyages that offer overnights in Cabo San Lucas. There are also some sea days mixed in.

After all those other cruise ships say adios to Cabo, cruisers on board Majestic Princess can explore the city's nightlife. Street taco tour, anyone? Tequila flights? How else can you enjoy late-night freshly fried churros on a street corner?

Who should go: This cruise is for anyone who enjoys exploring port cities more in-depth than what's offered by a standard port call and who appreciates less of a party atmosphere. Daytime activities in Cabo include sport fishing, wildlife watching, boat rides, camel rides, kayaking, parasailing and snorkeling. Add in evening tasting tours, and you're set.

6- and 7-night Mexico cruises plus Roatan on Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean' s Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest vessels ever to sail from Galveston, and there's a shiny new terminal designed to handle the behemoth.

Part of the line's Oasis Class , which includes the world's largest cruise ships, Harmony of the Seas carries 5,479 passengers at double occupancy. The ship features an open-air AquaTheater at its aft for high-diving and acrobatic shows, an ice skating rink, some of the most extravagant Royal Caribbean suites across the fleet and a park with live plants in the center of the ship.

There are several variations for sailings of both durations, but both offer ample beach time at Cozumel and Costa Maya, plus a third stop in Roatan, Honduras. The rest of the trip is all about fun on the ship as you cruise the Gulf waters for two to three sea days, depending on itinerary length.

Who should go: A Mexico cruise on Harmony of the Seas is ideal for big-ship lovers. Inexpensive flights into Houston's two airports make it accessible to at least a dozen central U.S. states. And for Texans who can drive to the port in less than a day, the fun of a beach day on Galveston Island before or after the cruise makes this sailing an easy choice.

7-night Mexican Riviera cruise on Carnival Panorama

Carnival Panorama is loaded with Carnival-style fun. From a jaw-dropping, nail-biting ropes course high above the decks to waterslides and an indoor trampoline park, this ship is a crash course in playtime. The seven-night itineraries sail from Long Beach and include all the main western Mexico ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, where the ship stays into the evening hours.

With three sea days, cruisers have plenty of time to enjoy the ship. The best part is that this floating thrill ride cruises this itinerary year-round.

Who should go: It's a great choice for families with tweens and teens because so many of the onboard activities are geared to them. Couples sailing without kiddos can enjoy adults-only areas like the Serenity sun deck retreat, a plush Cloud 9 Spa and Havana staterooms with their exclusive pool deck.

7-Night Expedition to Baja California with UnCruise

UnCruise Adventures does Mexico with an entirely different approach to cruising.

Leave the party ships and the thrill rides behind for an expedition adventure aboard the 66-passenger Safari Voyager. The ship sails from La Paz, Mexico, between January and June, taking passengers in search of gray whales, whale sharks, rays and an amazing variety of sea life, as well as wildlife on dry land.

Activities include kayaking, Zodiac boat rides, snorkeling, hiking and, of course, downtime at the beach. Safari Explorer is somewhat basic in its amenities. You can expect cabins that are quite cozy, but ample public space on deck to watch for sealife and meet your fellow passengers.

UnCruise fares include all meals, excursions, equipment, beverages (including alcohol) and airport transfers, leaving you free to enjoy the adventure.

Who should go: This cruise is for physically fit adults and families with kids ages 8-17 seeking adventure in the wilds and waters of Baja, California.

7-night Mexican Riviera cruise on Discovery Princess

When Princess Cruises' newest ship isn't in Alaskan waters, it can be found cruising to the Mexican Riviera from the Los Angeles port at San Pedro.

The seven-night itinerary includes Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, plus three sea days to enjoy the ship, which carries 3,660 guests. Discovery Princess brings a bit of elegance to the Riviera, with afternoon tea and the ability to order the Ultimate Balcony Breakfast to your cabin's private veranda (for an additional charge).

While Discovery Princess is similar to most Princess ships in design and decor, it has something no other ship in the fleet has — two Sky Suites. Each suite has two bedrooms and a luxurious 1,000-square-foot balcony for unrivaled views.

Who should go: This is the best Mexico cruise for those seeking Princess' relaxed upscale mode of cruising. Children are always welcome on Princess, and there are plenty of connecting rooms and cabin options with third and fourth bunks. Though the ship offers a youth program, don't expect waterslides and thrill rides. The vibe on board is low-key, and the average age is a bit older when compared to Royal Caribbean or Carnival.

Disney Magic

The 2,713-passenger Disney Magic is the oldest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet (it first launched in 1998). It was last refurbished in May 2023, when it received updates like a "Soul"-themed lounge, concierge-level upgrades and a new "Encanto" live show. The ship also features family favorites such as the AquaDuck waterslide, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique dress-up shop and Edge, an interactive game center for tweens.

Disney Magic features diverse entertainment, including live shows, an open-air Wide World of Sports deck, three pools and a splash area for children younger than 3. Unique to the Magic is the teens-only Chill Spa. When it comes to dining, the ship offers eight eateries, including an adults-only specialty restaurant and buffet options. Recent cruisers gave the food quality mixed reviews.

In terms of lodging, 70% of cabins offer ocean views or verandas. All cabins are outfitted with flat-screen TVs, sitting areas and bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Suites include extra perks such as concierge service and media libraries. Past cruisers noted that the service on this ship is up to Disney's standards, but so is the price tag.

Disney Magic sails from Galveston, Texas ;  San Diego ;  Miami ; Fort Lauderdale, Florida ;  New Orleans ; and  San Juan, Puerto Rico . It visits destinations across the Bahamas , the Caribbean, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip : Once per sailing, guests are invited to watch Tangled: The Musical in the Walt Disney Theater. This Broadway-style show retells the story of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider with three new original songs, puppets, and beautiful costumes. Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.

Sailing from Los Angeles , the ship cruises to destinations in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . It also departs from Singapore for transpacific voyages. 

Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance (previously Carnival Victory) set sail in December 2021 after a full transformation. The ship, which holds 2,984 guests and 1,108 crew members, boasts plenty of fun indoors and outdoors for cruisers of all ages.

Carnival Radiance features a ropes course, waterslides, a mini-golf course, dive-in movies in the evening and a sports area for activities like soccer, basketball, volleyball and boxing. The ship also offers a kids club for youths ages 2 to 17. The pool is surrounded by lounge chairs – perfect for relaxing – and those seeking additional quiet space can spend some time at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. Inside, the spa, the piano bar, the comedy club and the performance event venue, which features musicals, concerts and more, round out some of Carnival Radiance's most popular offerings. Dining options (14 eateries in total, including a Chef's Table experience) abound on this ship as well: Cruisers can enjoy casual fare at Big Chicken or Guy's Burger Joint, or sit down for a more upscale meal at Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi or the Steakhouse.

Staterooms aboard the ship include Interior (porthole and picture window choices are available), Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category options. Carnival Radiance sets sail from Los Angeles to destinations in Hawaii and Mexico .

Celebrity Eclipse

Launched in 2010 and scheduled for refurbishment in spring 2025, the 2,852-passenger Eclipse is one of Celebrity's largest vessels. About 85% of Eclipse's accommodations include verandas, and cruisers who splurge on suites and AquaClass staterooms receive butler service and access to exclusive specialty dining. All cabins offer interactive flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service.

As far as activities go, travelers can stay active at the Lawn Club, lounge by three pools, participate in hot glass classes and shop at a variety of upscale boutiques. In the evenings, cruisers can enjoy theme parties, comedy acts and Broadway-style shows. Meanwhile, kids programming (geared toward guests ages 3 to 17) is available through Camp at Sea. 

When it comes to dining, past cruisers praised the variety of casual and formal choices. The ship offers 10 eateries, including four specialty venues where reservations are required and additional charges apply. From the room stewards to the restaurant servers, Celebrity Eclipse's staff was also a point of praise among recent guests.

Celebrity Eclipse offers itineraries in the Caribbean, South America, the Pacific, Bermuda and more. 

Launched in 2016, the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam is one of Holland America's newer ships and the first in the more contemporary Pinnacle Class. Passengers can participate in everything from cooking classes to duty-free shopping, or simply relax by the pool or at the spa.

Holland America now features an exclusive amenities program, Club Orange. Members can receive benefits such as a complimentary stateroom upgrade, a dedicated concierge hotline and skip-the-line priority access.

Members of Club Orange will also receive additional benefits when onboard Koningsdam including a premium in-room breakfast menu and a private dining venue with an expanded menu.

Guests can spend their evenings playing casino games or watching stage shows and musical acts through a partnership with "Rolling Stone" magazine. While the ship does offer youth clubs for children ages 3 to 17, most of the entertainment and activities are geared toward adults.

When hunger strikes, passengers can choose between 11 dining venues, ranging from the casual New York Pizza & Deli to the more formal Pinnacle Grill steakhouse.

The ship's cabin categories are also diverse. Staterooms range from Interior and Ocean View cabins to Verandah rooms and three Suite categories.

Koningsdam departs from ports like San Diego , Seattle ,  Vancouver  and Anchorage , Alaska, for sailings through Mexico, Hawaii , Alaska and California.

Disney Wonder

The 2,713-passenger Disney Wonder debuted in 1999. It was most recently updated in 2019; the refurbishment rolled out new family-oriented amenities and entertainment offerings, like Tiana's Place with live music and southern cuisine inspired by the Disney movie, "The Princess and the Frog." 

The ship offers plenty of onboard activities, with 10 designated family areas, five youth clubs and seven adults-only spaces. While younger passengers play at age-appropriate clubs, grown-ups can relax at the adults-only Quiet Cove Pool. When hunger strikes, Wonder offers six dining options, including one adults-only specialty restaurant.

Like the majority of the ship, staterooms are designed with families in mind. Interior cabins can accommodate up to four passengers, while larger suites can sleep up to seven. All cabins come equipped with flat-screen TVs, seating areas and classic Disney designs. Recent cruisers noted the expensive cost of a trip on the Disney Wonder, but most felt the quality of service was top-notch. 

Disney Wonder departs from a range of ports throughout Australia and New Zealand, as well as  Vancouver , for sailings around the South Pacific, Mexico and Alaska.

Discovery Princess

The newest ship in the Princess fleet, Discovery Princess launched in March 2022. The ship is equipped with Princess Cruises' signature MedallionClass technology, which allows cruisers access to Wi-Fi, touchless experiences (such as contactless payment) and food and beverage delivery anywhere on the ship. Discovery Princess holds 3,660 passengers and 1,346 crew members. Overall, the new ship gets positive reviews from recent cruisers, with many complimenting the staff and the modern, clean spaces.

Cabins range from interior rooms and ocean view accommodations (158 to 172 square feet) to balcony cabins and suites (214 to 1,873 square feet). There are a variety of dining options on board as well, serving everything from pizza and American classics to sushi and seafood. Specialty dining venues include the French Bistro Sur La Mer, Sabatini's Italian Trattoria, The Salty Dog Gastropub and Crown Grill steakhouse. Or, for an extra special experience, enjoy a meal on your balcony or snag a reservation for a multicourse dinner at the Chef's Table Lumiere. (Note: Specialty venues incur an additional fee and some require reservations.) When it comes to entertainment, Discovery Princess boasts a casino, a show lounge, a jazz club and a theater that puts on Broadway-style shows.

Other amenities cruisers can enjoy on this ship include several pools, movies under the stars, a spa and an art gallery. Meanwhile, traveling families will appreciate the kids clubs, which offer programming and activities for youths ages 3 to 17.

The only major complaint from recent cruisers was that the internet connection was fairly slow and sporadic.

Discovery Princess sails mostly in California, Mexico and Alaska, with stops at ports like Cabo San Lucas, Mexico , and Juneau, Alaska .

Norwegian Bliss

Launched in April 2018 and refurbished in 2021, Norwegian Bliss carries 4,004 passengers and 1,716 crew members. Cabin layouts range from one-person Studios to The Haven villas, penthouses and suites, which offer private sun decks, king-sized beds and 24-hour butler service. The ship also features staterooms and suites with complimentary access to the Thermal Spa Suites.

Onboard entertainment options are plentiful on Norwegian Bliss. In addition to enjoying standard ship amenities like pools, a miniature golf course and kids clubs, cruisers of all ages can spend days at sea zipping around the race car track, playing laser tag, riding the arcade's virtual rollercoaster and more. Meanwhile, adults will love gambling in the casino, catching a performance at the theater, and sipping cocktails in the ship's 19 bars, nightclubs and lounges.

When it's time to eat, cruisers can order room service or grab a complimentary bite in one of three Main Dining Rooms, the buffet restaurant or the 24-hour pub. Guests staying in The Haven accommodations can also dine in The Haven Restaurant. An additional 13 coffee shops, quick-service eateries and a la carte restaurants that serve specialty cuisines like Mexican, Italian and Texas-style barbecue are available as well.

Norwegian Bliss departs from ports in Los Angeles , Miami  and  Seattle for sailings throughout Alaska, the Caribbean, Panama, Mexico and the Pacific Coast.

Carnival Miracle

Like other Carnival ships, the 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle boasts activities and entertainment geared toward travelers of all ages. Thanks to a renovation in 2020, the ship features upgrades like Guy's Burger Joint, WaterWorks, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Cantina and more. The ship also received a minor refresh to interior and exterior spaces in 2022. 

Even with the added venues, a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio ensures service is a priority. And compared to other Carnival ships, Miracle offers a higher percentage of cabins with ocean views. While Interior staterooms provide more wallet-friendly digs, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category cabins offer more space and scenery. All cabins come equipped with flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service.

During days at sea, grown-ups can enjoy poolside lounging or the adults-only Serenity Retreat, while kids ages 2 to 17 can play at age-specific programs.  There are also entertainment options like the Punchliner Comedy Club, the SkyBox Sports Bar and the Seuss at Sea program. Once the family works up an appetite, they'll have their pick of the main dining room, the Lido buffet, a specialty steakhouse (for an extra fee) and more.

Carnival Miracle departs from Galveston, Texas ;  Los Angeles  and  San Francisco  to destinations in the Caribbean, the Panama Canal,  Hawaii , Mexico , and Alaska . 

Navigator of the Seas

The 3,968-passenger Navigator of the Seas was most recently refurbished in February 2019. The ship now features the longest waterslide at sea, a revamped pool area, new nightlife venues and updated dining options. Prior to that, a major upgrade in 2014 added innovative amenities, such as virtual balconies in Interior staterooms. Aside from this virtual scenery, Interior rooms span 160 square feet, while balcony-equipped Suite category cabins range from 277 square feet to 1,260 square feet and include extras like whirlpool bathtubs.

When it's time to eat, guests can grab grub in the three-level main dining room, the buffet, a number of specialty restaurants and several casual eateries. When it's time to burn off those calories, you'll find a myriad of amenities and activities to keep you busy. The ship offers a spa, three pools and six whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, an ice skating rink and a surf simulator.

Evening entertainment includes Broadway-style shows, casino games and multiple bars and lounges. However, some past passengers warned of extra fees across the ship.

Best small ship cruise to Mexico

You could cruise to Mexico on a mega-ship. Or you could opt for a calmer, quieter, more yacht-like experience on Windstar Cruises’  Star Legend . Best cruise to the Yucatan Peninsula 

Mega ships aren’t the only vessels that cruise to Mexico . American Queen Voyages’  Ocean Navigator is less than one-tenth of the size of the behemoth ships sailing the region. The ship can accommodate just over 200 passengers and feels more like a river cruise ship than an ocean-going vessel. Restaurant and bar choices are limited, but that might not matter much when you’re sipping margaritas and snacking on molletes at the beach. The  Ocean Navigator ’s Mexico itineraries visit seven ports in 10 days, giving passengers the chance to dive into Cozumel’s deep blue water, explore Chichen Itza’s Mayan ruins, and sip on margaritas in Cancun. This isn’t the kind of ship that parties all night, but that should make it easier to wake up for gorgeous sunrises. There may be few more luxurious ways to arrive in Cabo San Lucas than on board Regent’s new  Seven Seas Grandeur . Holland America Mexican Riviera Cruise Review

On the first morning of our Holland America Mexican Riviera cruise husband Rob and I were thrilled as our ship slowly cruised within sight of the famous Land’s End rock formations near Cabo San Lucas at the southern point of the Baja Peninsula.

We wanted a North American destination close to our Arizona home. Holland America Line ’s Mexican Riviera round trip from San Diego fit the bill.

The Mexican Riviera cruise season runs October through April when temperatures are moderate. The 7-night cruise on the Oosterdam called on Cabo San Lucas as well as Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta on the Mexican mainland.

Cabo San Lucas lies where the Pacific Ocean meets Sea of Cortes. Massive granite arches beckon cruise ships to this colorful port.

In Cabo, we rode an excursion boat for a closer view of Land’s End arch rocks, followed by a bus ride to a scenic location for photo ops. The local tour guide shared interesting history and area information.

At Mazatlan, Rob thoroughly enjoyed the estuaries and bird watching expedition down mangrove and palm waterways to see brown pelicans, sea hawks, blue heron and other exotic waterfowl.

Mazatlan celebrates its Aztec culture. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception’s majestic twin towers dominates the narrow cobblestone streets that are typical of Mexican cities. In contrast, the more contemporary section of this city of 500,000 has wider streets, plus breweries, a casino and resorts. Newer hotels, chain stores and fast-food restaurants welcome tourists and winter residents.

As the Oosterdam docked in Puerto Vallarta, we immediately noticed a different look. This thriving tourist town has spiffed up the port area to spur tourism development with familiar American stores and eateries. Crew members appreciate the nearby Walmart.

Shore excursions in the three ports include city, shopping, cultural and whale-watching tours. Beach excursions, as well as tequila and beer tastings, are popular options. Adventuresome guests can ride horses, snorkel, zip line, parasail, or go sport fishing.

My Mazatlan city tour did a quick take on cliff divers in an area surrounded by vendors. We spent about 15 minutes visiting the Cathedral. The main attraction was a professionally choreographed Mexican Folkloric show. The tour ended with free time for lunch or shopping.

After a short shared cab ride in Puerto Vallarta, we climbed the steep steps to Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral. The beautiful interior was worth the effort. After browsing the vendors in front of the church, we strolled along the malecón, an oceanfront promenade with sculptures, street performers, shops and cantinas.

Despite news reports of violence in some parts of Mexico, we felt secure on the ship’s organized tours as well as on our own. Tour guides, bus/cab drivers and merchants were polite and treated us with respect in all three ports. Taxis were plentiful and affordable.

Fabulous food – dining aboard Oosterdam

Holland America is known for great food, and this voyage raised the bar. At the upscale Pinnacle Grill ($35 dinner, $10 lunch on sea days) our tender, juicy steaks and vegetables were cooked to perfection. A subtle light show that played on the jellyfish shapes on the ceiling enhanced the elegant atmosphere.

The bi-level main dining room offers fixed times or open dining. It boasts an extensive menu with five-course meals elegantly presented. The maître’s deftly orchestrate seating guests quickly to avoid a long entrance line. Guests also can order room service. Our complimentary room service breakfasts arrived hot and on time.

In the Lido buffet, the smiling and eager-to-please crew created a happy dining environment for guests to meet and mingle. This carried through the entire ship. The Lido buffet salad bar boasts an extensive array of fresh greens chosen by guests and served by a gloved crew member. We enjoyed starting lunch with a large bowl of our favorite healthy greens.

Holland America ships consistently receive high health inspection scores, and hand sanitation stations throughout the ship facilitate staying healthy.

On the third day of the cruise guests received simple survey forms asking what they liked, what they disliked, and what would they wanted to change. Management listed and took appropriate action.

Ample onboard activities

Formal nights—now called gala nights–have a more relaxed dress code. Wall-mounted TVs enable guests to get ship and shore excursion information in their cabins. Guests can get Internet help by taking their device to the front desk.

During the cruise guests had ample opportunities to learn about Mexican culture, heritage and cuisine. A lively Mariachi band played Mexican music, and colorful Folkloric dancers created a fiesta atmosphere.

In addition to typical spa treatments, Evergreen Spa offered a 7-day pass to its relaxing warm hydro pool with many jets to sooth aching joints and tired muscles. Spa guests in the thermal suite could also use a steam room and relax on a heated ceramic lounger with soft music and an ocean view ($149).

A Microsoft instructor taught software classes in the Digital Workshop. Guests attended exercise and craft classes, improved their cooking skills in America’s test kitchen and worshiped at daily Catholic Mass. Bridge, bingo, trivia and other games were popular pastimes. Throughout the cruise observant guests saw numerous migrating whales and playful porpoises.

Live music venues.

The Oosterdam offered a plethora of music from a string quartet playing recognizable classical pieces to show tunes and contemporary sounds. B.B. King’s Blues Club was a popular venue and packed for each of their three performances. Arrive early for the dueling pianos and sing-along. Aside from music, comedians, dancers and other entertainers performed every night.

Today’s cruise lines want to attract younger guests, singles and families while retaining veteran cruisers. During our voyage, generations from all backgrounds blended together. Congenial, well-trained smiling international crew members were eager to serve.

In an era of mass shootings and abrasive discourse, this cruise was a model of civility and respect. The congenial mix of guests and crew was as beautiful as the warm sunny weather.

My lasting memory was returning from the Cabo San Lucas shore excursion. Just as the tender moved in position to transfer guests back onto the ship, wave intensity increased quickly. Four skilled crew members lifted a woman in a wheelchair safely to the ship platform from the bobbing tender. We all applauded the heroic crew.

It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter. Everything was wonderful!

We did the Loreto to La Paz cruise aboard the Westward in December 2018 - January 2019, with a 2-day rock art trip before the cruise. It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. A local resident in Loreto recommended the ship. Everything was wonderful!

[I most enjoyed the] rock art: the great mural site is gorgeous, both the hike to it and the images. Swimming with whale sharks: we had an unusually good experience, the sharks are really impressive; snorkeling over schools of sardines and colorful fish; some gorgeous hikes. We did a number of hikes, three or four kayak trips, and three snorkel excursions (fish watching; swim with young sea lions; swim with whale sharks in the La Paz harbor). Hike lengths were up to about 2 miles, on good trails. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter. 

The boat has snorkel gear and shorty wet suits (with shoulders; if you buy your own, shoulders help keep you warm). You typically spend 2 to 4 hours off the ship during a day; the Westward has an excellent library of several hundred books (field guides, natural history, history, adventure, travel, fiction) covering Baja, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest (if you like to read, you'll find lots to choose from).

Accommodations Review

Staterooms on the Westward are comfortable; choice does not matter much (we spent little time in them except for sleeping or resting). The enclosed fantail is a great place to watch the scenery. The mid-ship parlor is also very comfortable. 

Meals Review

Tracie does an excellent job accommodating dietary needs (we had one pescatarian; most dinners had fish appetizer or soup and main course), but needs details in advance.  Portions are moderate and satisfying (not huge). Excellent use of fresh produce and fish. We tend to eat much more simply; I enjoyed the fine cuisine, but my wife would have preferred a simpler cuisine.

There is no wi-fi availability for almost the entire trip, so be prepared to enjoy not being connected! We liked the north-to-south trip, as highlights of the trip (swim with sea lions and whale sharks) came at the end.

Crew & Guides Review

Captain Bill is warm, friendly, interesting, and does everything he can to ensure that passengers have a great experience. Chef Tracie is a talented cook, with many years of experience (some in outstanding restaurants), who prepares excellent food, including 3-course dinners, nicely presented, with wine pairings. Our naturalist guide Carlos was born and raised in La Paz, speaks excellent English, and knows the fauna and flora very well. He was exceptionally helpful to my wife, who is less mobile than were the other guests. He also prepared a video with highlights of still photos and videos, distributed to guests as we left. Carlos is exceptionally knowledgeable, good humored, helpful. The thumb drive he gave us has a really wonderful selection of photos and videos (he uses an underwater go-pro, so there are great videos of schools of fish, seal lions, whale sharks).

• Westward Voyages in the Sea of Cortez

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. Plenty of relaxation, wonderful food immaculately presented, not to mention the exciting activities. I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

This trip was exactly as advertised – among the great whales, so close you could literally touch them. The ship and food were excellent with a superb, very attentive staff.

The room onboard was small but very comfortable.

We really enjoyed the local and organic produce, fresh pastries, and great wine list.

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew.

I thought our cabin was in the perfect location. We had a gorgeous view and no one could walk past our window. We were also close to the lounge and dining room.

Snacks at 4 pm instead of 5 pm or 6 pm would have been nice.

Jeremy did a terrific job of organizing our activities. Getting small groups into snorkeling, or kayaking, or hiking, or scenic boating was amazing! We felt very safe snorkeling.

Your packing list was fine but the boat provided binoculars and water bottles so we didn't need to pack them. [Our Adventure Specialist] was very helpful in choosing a cabin.

Tamales are a steamed masa, or a corn-based dough filled with meats, cheeses, vegetables, chili peppers or fruits. The masa is wrapped inside of a leaf and steamed. Discard the leaf and chow down on the stuffed dough for a traditional treat.

Fried tortillas take a swim in spicy red salsa or refreshing green salsa for a savory dish commonly enjoyed during breakfast.
