Description

Launched at the Paris motor show in 1955, the Citroen DS shocked the world with its aerodynamic design and innovative technology. A symbol of French ingenuity, the DS was a spaceship by the standards of the time. DS pronounced “Dee Esse” roughly translates to Goddess and was manufactured from 1955 to 1975 The Citroen DS featured many innovative features such as Hydro pneumatic suspension, Power steering, Disc brakes (first for a production car), A fiberglass roof which lowered the centre of gravity, Independent suspension New radial tyre technology which the engineers exploited through its parent company Michelin

There are very few cars manufactured today that can match the ride and comfort of a Citroen DS and it was an unlikely winner of the Monte Carlo Rally in 1959 and 1966 due to the hydro pneumatic suspension coping so well over rough terrain. The South African produced Citroen DS’s were initially built in Johannesburg, but production moved to Port Elizabeth in 1970 South African differences were mainly the seats which were Vinyl over foam cushions and other minor locally sourced items

This Example: This example is a South African model manufactured in 1969. Crossley & Webb purchased it in 2014 and used it for running errands as well as for various events including the Pink Polo Charity Event at Val de Vie. It was then sold to the current owner who commissioned a restoration to his specifications at great expense which included modern upgrades such as an air conditioning system and a retro modern sound system (Bluetooth and USB connectivity) Details of restoration: Rust removal from chassis (right rear corner and right-side A pillar) Full respray Refurbish and spray all rims white Retrim interior (red leather seats and door cards, new carpets and seatbelts Radiator refurbishment and new cap Custom audio system fitted – Rockford Fosgate rear speaker and Retrosound head unit (Bluetooth and USB) Retrofit aircon system Yellow (French style) headlight bulbs Fit period correct rear sunblind Side chrome strips fitted New wiring loom Major service Oil and filters LHM fluid New spark plugs New condenser and contact sets New rotor New ignition coil

The French automaker was founded by French industrialist André-Gustave Citroën in 1919. The first vehicle produced was the Type A and launched in the same year. The Type A was fitted with a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine that was able to reach a top speed of 65 km/h. After a market presence of just one year, Citroën had already sold 10,000 cars by 1920. By February 1921, Citroën assisted with road signage by creating a line of enamel road boards so the Frenchmen were able to direct themselves correctly. By year end, December 1921, Citroën revealed their second car – the Citroën B2. It was a more advanced version of the Type A along with having more power. When January 1922 approached, a world preview of the 5HP was made at the Paris Motor Show. The 5HP was a more compact version of the Type A. At the opening of the next Paris Motor Show, which took place in December 1922, Citroën had their name written in the sky. In efforts of displaying the qualities of Citroën’s half-track cars launched in 1922, they sent them on a journey across the Sahara Desert. The journey began in Touggourt and ended in Timbuktu with the travels made by Georges-Marie Haardt and Louis Audouin-Dubreuil. They travelled from the 17th December 1922 to the 7th March 1923. By 1923, Andre Citroën than branched out into the manufacturing of smaller cars, toy cars. The idea was to be “miniature replicas of dad’s car” with the first model being an open-tourer and named the Torpedo B2 10HP. Within the first ten years more than 30,000 models were sold. In 1924, Citroën produced their first all-steel body car which replaced the previous combination of wood and metal structures. Two years after their first expedition across the Sahara, Citroën organised the Croisière Noire expedition across Africa. It started out in Colomb-Béchar in October 1924 and ended in Cape Town in June 1925. In order to gain more international reach, a big merge between the Michelin and Peugeot group to merge Automobiles Citroën and Automobiles Peugeot took place in 1974. Year on year, even after the passing of founder André Citroën in 1935, and the bombing of the Citroën Javel Factory twice in the 1940’s, Citroën continued to excel with continuous launches of new projects and cars. Citroen has been responsible for many automotive technological advancements such as unibody design, self-leveling suspension, disc brakes and swiveling headlights. Citroën will soon be celebrating their 100-year anniversary come 2019.
