Marillion are a progressive rock band hailing from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, UK, who rose to prominence along with several other bands as part of the 80s neo-prog revival.

Taking their name from a J.R.R. Tolkien novel, the band came together in 1979, but it took them until 1984 to form their core lineup, featuring Steve Rothery (lead guitar), Pete Trewavas (bass), Mark Kelly (Keyboards) and Ian Mosley (drums), having had their frontman, Fish (Derek Dick) leave the band in 1988, being replaced with Steve Hogarth.

Their debut album, "Script for a Jester's Tear" was released in 1983, gaining a loyal fan base through their album and commitment to touring. In 1984, their second, "Fugazi" was unleashed, featuring a more straight-up hard rock approach, with singles "Assassin" and "Punch and Judy" becoming hits in the UK. But it was with their third record, the more progressive concept album Misplaced Childhood" (1985) that Marillion had their biggest success, with the single "Kayleigh" reaching number two in the UK charts and doing well in the US.

After vocalist Fish left the band, Marillion took a stylistic change, moving to a more accessible, mainstream rock sound, although still incorporating progressive elements, such as in "Brave," (1992) which whilst being straightforward rock, it incorporated a dark and complex symphonic sound reminiscent of classic prog acts.

The band moved to a softer sound in 1998, incorporating influences from The Beatles, U2 and Radiohead, especially the kraut-rock prog of Radiohead's "OK Computer." "Radiation" (1998), "Anoraknophobia" (2001) and "Marbles" (2004) all followed in this same vein, continuing the band's popularity into the new millennium. Marillion continued to be progressive and ambitious in their sound, culminating in their 2012 record, "Sounds That Can't Be Made," a politically motivated album that featured a 17-minute epic titled "Gaza."

Marillion were one of the first bands to use crowd-funding in order to support their activities, setting up a fund in order to raise money to support them upon a US tour in 1997, following their record label's refusal to offer adequate money for the tour. They have had a hugely successful career, selling over 15 million albums worldwide.

Live reviews

Awesome. As a long time fan of the Fish Era of the band (in fact, the last time I saw Marillion was at the Glenn Miller Ballroom in Boulder, Colorado in 1987, and my hero Fish was still the vocalist), finally after nearly 30 years I am able to give Steve Hogarth his due props. What sealed the deal for me was finally getting the chance to see him fronting the band last night, a first for me. He sounded better live than on their studio recordings, and he had a great stage presence and aura about him. I was very impressed. As any sensible fan knows, Marillion has been a very different band for a very long time since Fish left and H joined. Their work as a band should be appreciated for what they were then and are now. If you are a fan you probably lean towardd one era over the other, as I definitely do, but sides dont have to be taken and you can love both eras. I have alot of catching up to do with their back catalog since H joined now that I haveca new appreciation for his talent amd place in the Marillion world. I will love and respect Fish forever and will never forget that show back in '87. That was definitely a different time for all. By the way, 'Sugar Mice' sounded great last night. Thanks to the band for being able to still play those old tracks without any ill feelings.

So anyway, great show, the whole band was great, the venue and staff were great, and I have to add that even the process of buying a tour shirt was great, thanks to the friend of the band manning the merch booth. She was so awesome and so nice and she really helped me out by being accomodating when what I wanted was not available in my size anymore. Just wanted to say that as I'm sure she does not get the thanks and appreciation that she should get as a very important part of the touring entourage.

P.S. When Marillion played in Boulder in 1987, the campus radio station (I think it was them) simulcast the entire show live. My friend who did not go to the show recorded it for me since obviously i was not at home to work my cassette recorder. I re-lived the show through this recording for many years, but when I thought about it about a year ago I searched my cluttered house for it but could not find it anywhere. I do have my personal cassette collection all stored in three dresser drawers, and it was not there. So I wanted to take this opportunity of reaching out to Colorado Marillion fans since they just played in Colorado again to ask if anyone might have a recording of the 1987 Boulder CO show simulcast. If so I would love to hear from you and somehow get a copy as long as the band is okay with it. I guess the best way is to email me at the addrress i provided below if im allowed to list it here. If not, i guess just comment here like I did and if so I will contact people running the website and see what the best course of action would be. Its a very long shot but hey, it was an amazing recording and i can't think of any other way to replace it. Thanks! [email protected]

A lot of people still regard Marillion as a band that had a few hits in the 80s with a singer called Fish. Well, since those commercially successful days, Marillion have ploughed a very different field with a very different singer. Steve Hogarth has been with the band since 1989 and has steadily led the band away from their Genesis inspired roots into a more diverse and sustainable path.

One of Marillion's attributes is the special relationship they have with their fans and consequently their live shows retain an intimate feel despite several thousand people being in attendance. As a result, you can generally see people singing every word as the audience lap up every song from their now huge back catalogue. Behind the theatrical Hogarth there's four splendid musicians quietly going about their business and brimming with the confidence that comes from having played together as a unit for 30 years. From Steve Rothery's distinctive and soaring guitar sound through to Mark Kelly's atmospheric keyboard flourishes, this is band still at the top of their game, despite essentially disappearing from the eyes of the general public over a quarter of a century ago.

Marilion's tenacity coupled with their huge ability makes for a passionate and inclusive live experience and I heartily recommend them to lovers of quality, well constructed music that touches the emotions both in a live and studio setting.

I've been waiting for this gig for 35 years and the anticipation amongst the fans was palpable; fans who had came from all corners of the world to see the best band in the world.

Looking down from up with the pigeons in the gallery I could see that almost every seat was taken and it was a wondrous sight to behold.

The moment the band hit the stage with the opening guitar lines from The Long Shadowed Sun I knew we were going to be just fine and the love from the audience to the band grew with every note they played. The whole of F E A R passed in what seemed an instant and then same the break.

The second half ushered the all girl orchestra, augmented by flute and French horn for a meander through classics from the back catalogue. The Space, Afraid of Sunlight and then in to Go! when the lights went off and 5,000 people waived their finger lights in the air. A truly magnificent sight and I for one shed a tear.

The band were fantastic and h's voice was in brilliant shape, especially on The Space which is so hard to sing.

Special mention to the extra musicians who added another dimension to the songs and the lighting guys who did a fantastic job too.

The fans were, as ever, utterly brilliant and I'm proud to be a member of the great 'Marillion family'.

The opening night gremlins were apparent, with Mark Kelly being hit hardest, but the gig flowed smoothly and the sound was excellent.

An unusual set list (H said as much) saw a few old favourite of the H era aired, the best of these a stunning Seasons End, alongside half of the latest album.

The light show and projection screen was entertaining but it was the band interaction that captivated. In contrast to many other groups, it's clear by the smiles, jokes and story telling, just how much these guys love performing. When, in the middle of 'This Strange Engine', the keyboards didn't arrive as planned, H kept ringing his forlorn little bell while Mark Kelly scuttled around trying to get things working and the rest of the band had bemused little grins. No tantrums, just good humour.

The 2 and a bit hours flew by and as the last guitar notes of set closer 'Neverland' faded I was left in awe once more at the emotional journey these 5 people take me on every time I see them live.

The crowd were respectful but lacking a little enthusiasm (often the way with seated concerts).

As always, a great evening. See them while you can.

Fantastic show as always. The passion that H and the whole band put into every song is truly enlightening....

The Vic Theater however needs improvements. Almost slipped going down the narrow winding staircase to the men's restroom. Steel stairs?? Oh, $5 for a coke???

I stood behind the crew that ran the lights and sound board and the video showing in that space was nothing like what was appearing on the "screen" behind the band. You basically couldn't even see what was behind the band most of the time which is a shame, because if would had made the show much better if that's even possible.

Also, even if many of the concert attendees aren't baseball fans, a TV or two showing the World Series would had been a nice perk. Ultimately, everyone would be watching the band, but c'mon, the Cubs are playing in the World Series and you don't have a single TV??? How about even showing the game on the "screen" before the concert and between John Wesley and Marillion?

Hopefully when Marillion returns to Chicsgo, they'll go back to the Park West.

Loved the concert, hated the venue.

It's been a while since I last saw Marillion and as they soared through the openong of El Dorado I realised what a big big mistake that was.

Cruising apparently effortlessly between complex arrangements and rhythms they deftly create a swirling sonic landscape in which the listener is lost, transcended to a place of beauty and light. Lyrics and themes witj passion and intensity fill out the canvas and the production adds to the atmosphere with artful and clever use of lighting and a moving kaleidoscope of imagery spread out behind the band.

The set was heavy on the new album (Fuck Everyone And Run) but that's no bad thing as it is a real tour de force and has plenty of scope for all members to flex their musical muscles yet at the same time deliver a harmonious almost symphonic whole. Interspersed between the three sides of FEAR that the band played were highlights from a catalogue stretching back over 35 years.

This is a band very much for today and with something to say. And they are absolutely killer live. Go see them. Now.

Marillion are known as pioneers of the British progressive rock scene and remain one of the most successful exports selling over 15 million albums globally. Progressive is a genre born from technical abilities and instrumental prowess so therefore the live show is a celebration of the musicianship of the five member onstage this evening.

Fans old and new gather as one to pay homage to one of the UK's most prolific rock acts. It really does not make any difference when you discovered them, it is all the enjoyment of the music and the celebration of the albums. They take music from across their back catalogue tonight as opposed to simply relying on the popularity of 'Misplaced Childhood'. The fans remain enthusiastic to everything played and cheer on intently during huge instrumentals which resonate around the venue. They say their thank yous and close on 'King' before returning for a well selected encore of 'The Release' and 'Cannibal Surf Babe'.

It's been 35 years since i saw the band for the first time and one thing is certain time is on their side.

They're getting better and better. The show of yesterday night was even better than the one they gave one year ago in Paris.

Yeasterday night they invite on stage some classical musicians to sustain their music.

Lightshow and soundstage were awesome.

Marillion will undertake a nine-date UK tour in September 2022. The band said, “We are once again looking forward to our shows in September in conjunction with Kilimanjaro and we can't wait to get out there and play the new album to the fans”.

The tour follows the release of the brand new Marillion album, ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ which has received rave reviews. ‘An Hour Before It's Dark’ - Whether it's the last hour you were allowed to play outside as a child before you had to go home, a reference to the fight against time in relation to the climate crisis or the last minutes in a person's life, Marillion once again put their finger on the pulse of time.

Be it social, political, or personal issues, Marillion has never minced words and have always found a way to combine them with their own unique sound. The band are known for incredible songwriting, melodies and top-notch musicianship, while swimming against the tide, not bending to norms and limitations.  The first single ‘Be Hard On Yourself’ couldn't be a better example.   Like its predecessor, 2016's critically acclaimed and chart-topping album ‘F*** Everyone And Run (F E A R)’, ‘An Hour Before It's Dark’ was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, which also provided the perfect backdrop for the carefully chosen selection of behind-the-scenes footage in form of a documentary on the making of the album and a performance of ‘Murder Machines’ from Real World that has been released together with the album.    Founded in 1979, Marillion has, over the course of 20 studio albums, become one of the most commercially successful progressive rock bands. Marillion embraced the internet for both their commercial approach and to interact with their audience, long before most of their peers.

The band are welcoming Luke Jackson as the support.

Marillion announce September 2022 UK tour

They play nine shows later this year

Marillion have announced a new headline UK tour for September 2022.

The progressive rockers’ nine-date trek opens at Blackburn King Georges Hall on Sunday 18th September and calls in at Glasgow, York, Southampton, Aylesbury, Stoke, Sheffield and Brighton before culminating at London Eventim Apollo Hammersmith on Friday 30th September.

Marillion said: “We are once again looking forward to our shows in September in conjunction with Kilimanjaro and we can't wait to get out there and play the new album to the fans."

The dates follow Marillion’s rapturously received Light At The End Of The Tunnel Tour , which took place in November 2021.

Marillion UK tour tickets:

Tickets to Marillion’s September 2022 UK tour go on sale from Planet Rock Tickets at 10am on Friday 11th March.

Marillion released their 20th studio album ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ last Friday (4th March), and it’s the follow-up to their critically acclaimed and chart-denting album ‘F--- Everyone And Run (F E A R).’

Singer Steve ‘h’ Hogarth says that contrary to some of the heavy-hitting lyrical themes, ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ is actually an upbeat record.

“Despite the seemingly bleak contemplations across this album - the virus, our mortality, medical science, care, AND Leonard Cohen (ha ha) - the overall feeling of the music is surprisingly upbeat,” h says.

“I think the band are as on form as they ever were really, and the addition of Choir Noir has added another new soul and colour to things”

To celebrate the release of ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’, last week Marillion emblazoned the artwork over a number of London black cabs.

Any lucky Marillion fan who spots and flags down one of the taxis can ask the cabbie to take them anywhere in London for free by saying the password "An Hour Before It’s Dark.” They will be asked to take a photo of themselves (or let the driver take a photo), to post on socials, whether inside or next to the car.

These special taxis will be on the streets of the capital for the first two weeks of release (Friday 4th March to Monday 14th March).

Rock stars' jobs before they were famous:, bon scott – postman.

The AC/DC legend was a postman in Fremantle, Western Australia in his late teens. Tenuously linked, postmen now deliver mail to Bon Scott Crescent in Moncrieff, which was named in the late singer's honour earlier this year. Other notable people who were postmen include Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney and Steve Carell. (© Getty/iStock)

Mick Jagger - Porter in psychiatric hospital

While he was a student at the London School of Economics in his teens, Sir Mick worked part time as a porter at the Bexley Mental Hospital. Brought up in the nearby Wilmington, Mick (who is worth an estimated £260million) was paid a reported four pounds and ten shillings a week.

Malcolm Young – Sewing machine mechanic in bra factory

After leaving school aged 15, late AC/DC founder Malcolm Young worked as a sewing machine mechanic at a Hestia bra factory in Sydney, Australia. Malcolm was in a band called the Velvet Underground at the time (not to be confused with the Lou Reed band) but went on to form AC/DC with his younger brother Angus in 1973. Incidentally, Malcolm and Angus came up with the AC/DC band name when they saw the letters – literally meaning alternating current/direct current - on their sister Margaret's sewing machine.

Josh Homme - Farm worker

While still a member of pioneering and highly influential desert rockers Kyuss, Josh Homme still worked on his grandad's farm and only quit when he launched Queens of the Stone Age in 1996 aged 25. "I didn't want to lose my grip on reality," Homme told Red Bull. "I knew the world of rock music is one that it's all too easy to get lost in, and one where you can turn into an arrogant, decadent a--hole if you're not careful." Asked if he'd recommend working the fields to fellow rock stars, Homme replied: "Hard work and a bit of humility never hurt anyone. In that sense, I think it would definitely do a lot of musicians some good!"

Ozzy Osbourne - Slaughterhouse worker

Before Black Sabbath, Ozzy was a jack-of-all-trades working as a construction site labourer, trainee plumber, apprentice toolmaker and car factory horn-tuner. However, it was his job in an abattoir that left a lasting impression on Ozzy. "I had to slice open the cow carcasses and get all the gunk out of their stomachs," he said. "I used to vomit every day; the smell was something else."

Steve Harris – Architectural draughtsman

After studying architectural drawing at Leyton Sixth Form College, the 19-year-old Steve Harris founded Iron Maiden in 1975 but earnt a wage working as an architectural draughtsman in the East End of London. Steve told Nights with Alice Cooper in 2020: "Straight after school, went straight into that job. I did my college stuff and on the weekends, two nights a week, and I made sure I got qualified to a certain degree because I thought, if the band don't work, then I'll have something to fall back on." Steve briefly became a street sweeper after losing his job, but fortunately Iron Maiden's career took off at the turn of the 1980s.

Gene Simmons – Assistant to Vogue magazine editor

The young Chaim Witz (who later renamed himself Gene Klein) was a self-certified "excellent typist" and in the mid-sixties landed himself a job as an assistant to an editor at fashion bible Vogue Magazine. Fortunately he downed the typewriter and a few years later started KISS with Paul Stanley. The rest, they say, is history.

Kurt Cobain – Janitor

During Nirvana's embryonic stages, the teenage Kurt worked as a janitor to help fund the band. Bassist Krist Novoselic said: "Here was a man who would never clean his kitchen or take out the garbage, or do those kind of chores, but Kurt Cobain was not a lazy person. Basically he cleaned toilets – that's how he paid for (our first) demo."

Chris Cornell – Fish handler

Long before his Soundgarden days, the late-great Chris Cornell earned a crust working for his seafood wholesaler. A far cry from his eventual lifestyle as a rock star, Chris told Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 2010: "My job was to wipe up the slime and throw away the fish guts. I met pretty much every sous-chef in town because they would come in and look around at what we had. I think we had the best wholesale seafood in town. The owner was impeccable about it."

Eddie Vedder – Security guard

In the early nineties, Eddie worked a variety of jobs including as a contracted security guard at La Valencia Hotel in San Diego. After the demise of his first band Bad Radio in 1990, Eddie worked as a night attendant at a petrol station. Fortunately his fortunes changed when friend and ex-Red Hot Chilli Peppers member Jack Irons handed him a demo from a band looking for a new frontman…

David Bowie – Butcher’s delivery boy

After discovering the life-changing music of Little Richard, the 10-year-old David Jones quickly decided he wanted to be a saxophone player for his musical idol. Determined, David got a job as a butcher's delivery boy to fund the purchase of his first instrument and took his first tentative step on his glittering music career.

Freddie Mercury – Market stall trader

Freddie and Roger Taylor both had separate stalls on the top floor of the now demolished Kensington Market in London in the early seventies. Alongside clothing items, Freddie sold many of his own paintings and drawings on the stall and even continued to work there when Queen released their self-titled debut album in 1973.

Patti Smith – Toy factory worker

Although it sounds like a harmless enough job on paper, Patti's job in a toy factory testing toys and packing boxes was a traumatic experience for her. Speaking about her colleagues, Patti said: "The stuff those women did to me in that factory was horrible. They'd gang up on me and stick my head in a toilet full of p***."

Joe Strummer – Gravedigger

In his early 20s Joe decamped from London to Newport, South Wales, where, alongside being the part-time frontman of band The Vultures, he worked as a gravedigger at St Woolos Cemetery. When the band split in 1974, Joe packed in his job and moved back to London and formed new rockabilly outfit The 101ers.

Keith Richards – Tennis ball boy

The legendary Rolling Stones axeman worked as a ball boy at a tennis club as a young lad – predominately for his mum and dad Doris and Herbert! He says: "My parents played tennis and I was dragged every weekend to the court as their ball boy, so I got to know the ins and outs of the game!"

Jonathan Davis – Embalmer

After studying at the San Francisco School of Mortuary Science, Jonathan became a professional embalmer. Speaking to The Guardian in 2015, Jonathan said mortuary college was an intriguing experience: "I've pulled so many dead bodies out of cars. It's like a puzzle. Trying to figure out how someone died. It gave me attention too. It was f***ing weird. I got into it for attention and ended up liking it."

Lemmy – Jimi Hendrix’s roadie

A far cry from some of the humdrum jobs on this list, the late Motörhead legend became a roadie for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in his early twenties when he was sharing a flat with Noel Redding and the band's manager Neville Chesters. He was paid £10 a week to go on tour with Jimi plus the extra incentive of "handfuls of acid."

Lars Ulrich – Tennis player

The Metallica drummer has tennis in his blood; both his dad Torben Ulrich and granddad Einer Ulrich were professional tennis players for Denmark. Instilled with a love of the game and ranked in Denmark's top 10 for his age, at 16 Lars attended the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida but realised it wasn't for him: "At the academy, I realized that my ability wasn't enough to be a successful professional, far from it, and the discipline necessary was not in me."

Tony Iommi – Sheet metal worker

The heavy metal pioneer aptly worked with heavy metal pre-fame. The much-fabled story goes that aged 17, Tony lost the tips of his middle and ring finger on his right hand in an accident at the metal factory, however, inspired by jazz musician Django Reinhardt (whose fourth and fifth fingers were paralysed from burns) it did little to thwart his enthusiasm for guitar playing. With the aid of thimbles, over the ensuing years Tony honed his inimitable and influential metal sound.

Tom Araya – Respiratory therapist

The bassist/vocalist used his job as a certified respiratory therapist (dealing with air mixture ratios, drawing blood, asthma and more) at the Brotman Medical Centre in California to partially fund Slayer's debut album 'Show No Mercy'. Pleased he escaped the humdrum life, Tom told KNAC: "I'd get up in the morning and deal with traffic; and then leave at three and deal with traffic." He was at the hospital when Michael Jackson was treated for burns in 1984.

Eric Clapton – Bricklayer’s assistant

Kicked out of art school in 1961, Clapton was told he had to work for his granddad Jack Clapp if he was to carry on living under the same roof as him and wife Rose. Making £15 a week, Eric said working with a master bricklayer "was no laughing matter" due to the hard work but "I really did love it. (My grandfather's) legacy to me was that I should always do my best, and always finish what I started."

Jon Bon Jovi – Janitor

Aged 17 in 1979, the young John Francis Bongiovi Jr. landed a job as a janitor at his cousin Tony Bongiovi's Manhattan recording studio, Power Station. It was while sweeping the floors here that John made his first professional music recording by singing lead vocals on the festive Star Wars song 'R2D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas' from Meco's 1980 holiday album 'Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album'. Balancing his day job with his fledgling rock career, John laid down a number of songs at the studios. In 2001 the unearthed tracks were released as the album 'The Power Station Years: The Unreleased Recordings'.

Maynard James Keenan – Army soldier

The Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifier singer and esteemed winemaker joined the United States Army in 1982 after being partially inspired by the Bill Murray movie Stripes. Distinguished in basic and advanced training, Keenan spent two years in the army but turned down a four-year appointment to West Point (United States Military Academy) and opted to pursue a career in music insteam. The rest, they say, is history.

Tool's Adam Jones - Visual effects on movies

Prior to achieving global fame as the guitarist with Tool, 57-year-old Adam Jones worked in make-up, special effects and set design on a number of blockbuster Hollywood movies. Famous films Jones worked on included Batman Returns, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Dances with Wolves, Ghostbusters II and Jurassic Park. Jones also created the fearsome 'Freddy Krueger in the womb' make-up for 1989 horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and he worked on its predecessor A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Due to his work in the special effects industry, Adam Jones has used his stop motion camera techniques on a number of Tool videos including 'Sober', 'Prison Sex', 'Stinkfist',' Ænema', 'Schism', 'Parabola', and 'Vicarious'. His warped visual creations are a mainstay of Tool's live concerts with the videos often played alongside the live music.
