Wine Tasting in Budapest: 10 Places You Have to Try

budapest wine tour

Hungary was one of Europe’s most important wine producers, with Hungarian reds and whites lauded throughout the continent. But after the efflorescence in Medieval times, the phylloxera epidemic, and World Wars, Hungarian wine production experienced severe damage and traumas. Thankfully, the country’s wine industry is bouncing back, with 22 Hungarian wine regions producing a multitude of premium wines.

If you’re looking for a destination to start your wine journey in Hungary, there’s no better place to go than the country’s capital, Budapest. While the city doesn’t have vineyards, it’s easy to find wine shops, bars, and restaurants offering wine tasting in Budapest. It’s also a popular base for thrilling wine-tasting tours, where you can sample top local wines and explore wine regions, such as Eger, Tokaj, and the Etyek-Buda wine district, located at the city border.

There are plenty of other exciting things to do at night in Budapest if you’re only available after work hours. Besides wine tastings in wine bars, you can enjoy sightseeing tours or an evening cruise while sipping a glass of Tokaj wine and admiring spectacular sights along the Danube River.

Don’t forget to drop off your bags at a Budapest luggage locker . This way, you can make the most of your wine adventures, going on wine tours and visiting wine bars and cellars without burden.

Dobló Wine Bar

Established in 2010, Dobló is one of the first wine bars that opened in Budapest. It is stationed in the heart of the Jewish Quarter with its colorful and lively streets and between Kazinczy Street Synagogue and Rumbach Street Synagogue.

The building of this charming lovely bar was a former shop, with exposed bricks and arched ceilings adding more character to the interior. Thanks to its cozy and dim interior, it’s one of the warmest and most atmospheric wine bars you can find in the city. There’s also live music, including DJs and jazz, so what else could be more welcoming than this place?

Dobló Wine Bar offers two dozen Hungarian wines by the glass. Although the wine menu isn’t extensive, it changes weekly, offering visitors something new and delightful every time. You can also pre-order themed guided wine tastings.

Charcuterie plates, cheese plates, and fresh pickles are also available to accompany your wine. Plus, you can get craft beer, premium palinka, or wine spritzers if you want to try something else.

Location: Budapest, Dob u. 20, 1072

Faust Wine Cellar

Faust Wine Cellar is one of Budapest’s best places to sample Hungarian wines. It’s part of the labyrinth system that winds beneath the historic Buda Castle, a castle and palace complex that dominates the city from the Várhegy hill. Also known as the Royal Palace, the Buda Castle is home to the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Library, and the National Széchényi Library. This makes Faust Wine Cellar an obligatory stop during your tour to one of the country’s most significant symbols.

The medieval atmosphere inside the cellar perfectly matches your Budapest wine tasting experience. It provides an exceptional backdrop as guests learn the history of Hungarian wines, the wine regions, and the country’s main wineries. A friendly wine expert will be your guide, introducing you to the Hungarian specialties.

The cellar is undoubtedly the most authentic setting to broaden your knowledge about pálinka and Hungarian wines close to downtown. You can also approach it via Hotel Hilton through the Dominican Cloister. Groups and individual guests are welcome, but a reservation is highly recommended.

A Brief History of the Etyek Wine Region

a long cherry stained wooden bench with chairs inside a vaulted stone cellar

Etyek village is part of the Etyek-Buda wine region of Hungary where mainly white grape varieties are grown, with more and more experiements with red varieties.

Viticulture in the area dates back to the Romans , but roots of current wine making can be traced back tot he early 1700s. German families settled down in the area between 1720-1770 who started cultivating vineyards and making wine.

By the second half of the 19. century Etyek became the vineyard of the Hungarian capital. At the time hundreds of stone cellars were built out of which many still stand and are thriving.

You can see and experience their historic, romantic atmosphere on the tour.

Wines made from grapes of the Etyek region provide very good base for making champagne. After the II. WW the wine region went to decline due to the large-scale socialization of wine making during the Communist era.

Luckily viticulture started to revive in the late 1990ies early 2000ies and the trend is continuing, making Etyek a very popular wine and culinary centre in the vicinity of Budapest.

China's Xi in Hungary to celebrate 'new era' with Orban

P resident Xi Jinping received a warm welcome in Hungary on Thursday as he held talks aimed at bolstering already flourishing ties with China's closest European Union ally, amid divisions with the West over the Ukraine war and global trade.

The state visit to Hungary is the final leg of Xi's first European tour since 2019.

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan were received with military honours by Hungary's President Tamas Sulyok in the lavish courtyard of Budapest's presidential palace.

According to a statement issued after the meeting between the heads of state, Xi said that the bilateral "relationship is now at its best in history".

The Chinese leader was to meet Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for talks at the premier's residence later Thursday before delivering a statement to the press at about 1530 GMT.

For the state visit, Budapest was decked out with Chinese flags and placed under tight security. The few flags held up by Tibetan demonstrators were hidden from Xi's sight.

Before his arrival late Wednesday, Xi had praised in an op-ed published in Hungary's Magyar Nemzet daily a "long-standing friendship" he described "as mellow and rich as Tokaji wine", referring to the renowned Hungarian vineyards region.

"We have gone through hardships together and defied power politics together amid volatile international situations.

"Our bilateral relationship... has embarked on a golden voyage... On the new journey of the new era, China looks forward to working closely with our Hungarian friends," he wrote.

- Deepening ties -

Frequently at loggerheads with Brussels, Orban has pursued an eastwards foreign policy since his return to power in 2010, seeking closer economic ties with Russia, China and other Asian countries.

The nationalist premier remained committed to his strategy even as tensions between Western nations and Beijing have increased over human rights, the Covid pandemic, trade and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Since Hungary began to promote itself as a global hub for electric car  manufacturing in 2022, new Chinese businesses have sprung up all over the country.

Xi's three-day visit to Hungary after passing through Paris "shows Hungary's growing importance in global politics," Orban's chief of staff Gergely Gulyas told a government briefing on Thursday.

According to the Hungarian government, at least 16 different agreements promoting cooperation with China in rail and road infrastructure, nuclear energy and the automotive industry are to be signed.

- 'Undermine EU unity' -

The Chinese leader kicked off his tour in France, a visit that was cordial but also highlighted tensions between Beijing and the EU over the Ukraine war and global trade.

While French President Emmanuel Macron pressed a message to Beijing not to support Russia's war against Ukraine and to accept fairer trade, Hungary would provide "a friendlier destination for Xi", said political scientist Ja Ian Chong of the University of Singapore.

In Hungary, a country with close ties to Moscow and Beijing, Xi will be able to "avoid tough conversations and awkward questions", he added.

Both countries have called for a peaceful settlement of Russia's war in Ukraine.

"Hungary provides a diplomatic win for Xi, showing his warm ties with an EU member state that will still roll out the red carpet for Chinese investment," said Xiaoxue Martin, a researcher at the Clingendael China Centre.

But analyst Claus Soong of the Mercator Institute for China Studies warned that "Xi aims to cultivate an image of China having a European ally and intends to exploit Hungary's position to undermine EU unity."

On the streets of Budapest, many tourists were astonished by the heavy security, with police blocking access to sites.

"The Prince of China is here," smiled an Israeli tourist, who was disappointed not to be able to take the funicular up to Buda Castle.

Chinese President Xi Jinping (L) is greeted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban (R) at the airport

Chinese President Xi’s trip to Europe: ‘Charm offensive’ or canny bid to divide the West?

Fine brandy, a Tour de France jersey and old grudges against NATO: On his first European tour in five years, Chinese President Xi Jinping is engaging in a diplomatic dance that is seen by some as a concerted Chinese bid to stress-test the transatlantic alliance.

With Washington watching warily from the sidelines, Xi’s whirlwind visit this week has taken him to France, Serbia and Hungary, with a very different tone and agenda at each stop, but with some overarching goals in common.

Taken as a whole, the Chinese leader’s European trip is seen as both a charm offensive and a hard-nosed display of realpolitik on matters such as trade and the war in Ukraine — at the expense of a united Western front on both.

During the visit, Xi has nodded to traditional European centers of power such as France and the European Union — but also laid heavy emphasis on deepening ties with autocratic allies on the continent’s fringe.

In the peaks of the cloud-shrouded Pyrenees, Xi accepted a jersey from France’s famed bicycle race and joined President Emmanuel Macron in calling for a truce in all global hostilities during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In Serbia’s capital, Xi’s arrival coincided with the 25th anniversary of NATO’s mistargeted bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade — an episode that still stirs anti-Western fury among Serbian nationalists.

And in Hungary, he offered warm praise for Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the illiberal leader who has been a thorn in the side of European allies in the more than two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine .

Trump and Biden both say they’re tough on China. But whom would Beijing prefer to deal with?

With growing mistrust between the the U.S. and China, an election between President Biden and Donald Trump looks like a lose-lose scenario for China.

April 25, 2024

Some analysts saw Xi’s trip as one meant to drive home the message that China will seek to counter U.S. influence wherever it can, and pointedly remind even close American allies to consider whether their own interests run counter to those of Washington.

“There’s lot of press commentary that the Chinese are engaged in a ‘charm offensive,’” Evan Medeiros, the former China director at the National Security Council, said in a video interview with Foreign Policy magazine.

While that may be so, he said, the three stops on the tour were specifically chosen in service of “advancing Chinese interests in ways meant to undermine the priorities of both the European Union and NATO.”

Other analysts also described the visit as a simultaneous act of wooing the West and seeking to divide it.

“It embodies Beijing’s skillful navigation of the delicate balance between aggressively advancing its economic imperatives and preserving amicable diplomatic relations, possibly even bolstering its sway in certain quarters of the continent,” political economist Sona Muzikarova, a political economist, wrote in a commentary for the Atlantic Council.

In Ukraine, relief over U.S. aid vote — and fear over what an angry Russia will do next

Amid worsening Ukraine war outlook, an infusion of American military aid is seen as crucial in the fight against Russian invaders. Will it be enough?

Xi’s visit came as Europe and the United States are presenting a largely united front in support for Ukraine . But there are some cracks, and China showed signs it might seek to exploit them.

budapest wine tour

Weeks before Russia launched its war in Ukraine, Beijing and Moscow declared themselves in a “no limits” relationship — widely seen as in effect greenlighting Russia’s February 2022 invasion . But since then, China has portrayed itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine war .

That has been met with skepticism in Western quarters, but during Xi’s stop in France, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, made a point of praising China for playing “an important role in de-escalating Russia’s irresponsible nuclear threats” in connection with the fighting in Ukraine .

But despite that gesture of conciliation, Von der Leyen and Macron made no visible headway in persuading Xi to use his influence with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the conflict.

Instead, Xi pushed back hard against assertions, primarily by the United States, that China has helped prop up Moscow’s war effort.

With Macron at his side, the Chinese leader declared that his government was “not at the origin of this crisis, nor a party to it, nor a participant.” And he said the Ukraine war should not be used as a pretext to “cast blame, smear a third country and incite a new Cold War.”

At the same time, Xi expressed broad support for peace, endorsing Macron’s call for an “Olympics truce” — a hiatus to hostilities in Ukraine and elsewhere during the Summer Games. But such a halt to fighting appeared unlikely to take hold in Ukraine anytime soon.

As summer approaches, Russia has been aggressively moving to try to pierce Ukraine’s defense along the front lines and has launched a near-nightly onslaught of missile and drone attacks meant to smash the country’s power grid .

Like most of Xi’s diplomatic forays, this one centered heavily on trade. Most countries have their own specific bilateral interests in dealings with China and use high-level meetings to try to advance them.

Macron brought up some particularly French concerns, including China’s threat of tariffs on cognacs. As a symbolic sweetener for his insistence, the French president’s gift offerings to Xi included an Armagnac from France’s southwest, one of the liqueurs at risk of the damaging Chinese sanctions. And in an equally symbolic move, the Chinese side said that for now, the brandies would have a reprieve.

Larger trade issues, though, are proving considerably more contentious.

China is upset about a European Union investigation, launched last year, of Chinese subsidies for its domestically produced electric vehicles for export. The EU considers the subsidies a threat to Europe’s auto industry, but some German carmakers have publicly objected to the investigation, fearing it could launch a trade war and harm joint ventures.

Macron and Von der Leyen teamed up during Xi‘s visit to argue the EU’s case on Chinese practices deemed predatory, but the talks did not include officials from Germany, Europe’s largest economy.

Muzikarova, the Atlantic Council political economist, said intra-EU trade disagreements gave China an opportunity to “deploy its signature ‘divide and conquer’ strategy,” noting that EU member Hungary “has been especially useful to this end.”

In Budapest, the last stop on Xi’s European tour, the Chinese leader was expected to finalize a number of agreements with Orban that will significantly deepen economic ties, even while the EU has taken a more protectionist stance.

As Orban has found himself increasingly on the outs with other European leaders — over Ukraine, his government’s antidemocratic moves and Hungary’s warmth toward Russia — Xi lavished praise on the Hungarian prime minister.

Orban, a darling of U.S. conservatives aligned with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, has worked to block both the NATO expansion and EU aid to Ukraine. In March, he made a pilgrimage to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and declared that the former president, if reelected, could instantly halt the war by cutting off Ukraine assistance.

In an ode that appeared in the pro-government outlet Magyar Nemzet on the eve of his visit, the Chinese leader praised Hungary’s “independent” foreign policy — comments seen as encouraging Hungary to continue defying the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the EU.

Serbia, for its part, used Xi’s visit to highlight its quarter-century-old grievance against NATO over the destruction of the Chinese Embassy in a U.S. airstrike, which came as the alliance moved against Serbia during the Kosovo war. Xi arrived in Belgrade on Tuesday night, coinciding with the bombing anniversary.

The two countries, which announced during the visit they are implementing a free-trade agreement beginning in the summer, also offered mutual support over the sensitive issue of territorial claims rejected by most of the rest of the world. Serbia backs China’s stance that Taiwan is not a sovereign country but a breakaway province, while Beijing supports the Belgrade government’s claim to Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008.
