Sincil Bank: Lincoln City

lincoln city fc stadium tour

Lincoln City was formed as an amateur side in 1884 on the back of the disbanded Lincoln Rovers. To begin with they played their games at John O’Gaunts Ground, but moved to Sincil Bank when it opened in 1895. As with most things in the city, Lincoln Cathedral dominates the stadium, which was sold by the club in 1982. It was bought back by the former chairman John Reames in 2000, after the club had escaped its first bout of financial problems.

The stadium – currently known as the LNER for sponsorship reasons – has undergone numerous changes and developments over the years. When it first opened there wasn’t much to speak of, but in 1896 an uncovered stand was built on the Southern side. At the same time a piece of rope that had run around the edge of the pitch was replaced by wire. The local Working Men’s Conservative Club helped them to develop it even further in the early part of the 1900s. Gradually the improvements meant that a record attendance of over 23,000 was set in 1967, though today’s capacity is closer to 10,000.

There are five distinct stands around Sincil Bank, with the East Stand the largest of them. The St Andrews Stand opened in 1987 and only runs along half the length of the pitch on the West side, but it includes the press box and Director’s section, with the other part taken up by the Family Stand. The Stacey-West Stand – named after lifelong supporters Bill Stacey and Jim West who were killed in the Bradford City stadium fire – was the main stand in the stadium before the St Andrews Stand opened and, is now where the away supporters sit. Finally, the South Stand is opposite the Stacey-West Stand behind the other goal.

Lincoln City Ticket Prices

If there is a simpler ticketing system in the EFL than at Sincil Bank then we are yet to find it. Your age will affect the price as it does everywhere else, and it is slightly cheaper if you are a Bronze member, but other than that ticket prices are only £1 apart depending on the stand you sit in:

  • Adults: £24.00-£25.00
  • Concession: £19.00-£20.00

How To Get Lincoln City Tickets

You will be able to get tickets from the stadium’s ticket office, but their official website is always the best place to start. If you’d like to speak to someone then calling the club directly is always an option.

Getting To Sincil Bank

Train – Lincoln Central Train Station is about a ten to fifteen minute walk from the ground.

Bus – If you get off the bus at South Park Roundabout then you’ll be a short walk from the stadium. Buses 1, 1D, 7, 7A, 13, 14, 24A, 27, 27A, 601, SB4 all stop there, so they’re the best ones to get.

Car – Sincil Bank is just off the A15, so that’s the main road you’ll want to watch out for.

By Air – Humberside International Airport is probably the closest to Lincoln if you’re coming in from abroad, located around thirty miles away. East Midlands Airport is another alternative, though that’s further away at around the fifty mile mark.

Taxi – A taxi from the centre of Lincoln to the football ground will take about ten minutes to complete its journey and shouldn’t cost much more than about £8.

Parking Near Sincil Bank

There’s a small car park at the ground, but you have to book in advance and there’s no unreserved spots on the day of a match. Public parking is located not far from the South Park Roundabout.

The facilities are what you might expect from a club of this size. The stadium is comfortable enough and you can buy a decent range of food and drinks from the stalls there too.

Hospitality

lincoln city fc stadium tour

There are two hospitality options available on a match by match basis. The SRP 200 Club is the slightly higher end option, including premium drink options, the dish of the day (whatever that means), and refreshments including luxury locally sourced snacks.

The Legends Lounge is much more relaxed and celebrates the club’s players past and present. You will witness the match sponsor presentation, have a room host to look after you, as well as the option for food and drinks.

Private Hire

There are plenty of different areas within the stadium that are available to be used for events such as wedding parties, birthdays, business meetings and other functions. They can cater for up to 150 guests and, again, offer to work with you to your specific requirements.

Stadium Tours & Museum

There are no traditional stadium tours available but the Imps do offer stadium tours sometimes, such as during half term, on an occasional basis. There is also sometimes a special tour unlike any other, that includes all of the usual access all area types of things but you can also watch a first team training session at the Soper of Lincoln Elite Performance Centre. It’s not cheap though – £50!

About Lincoln City

lincoln city fc stadium tour

There is a grotesque gargoyle on the wall inside Lincoln Cathedral called the Lincoln Imp. It has a fun story behind it and over the years it became a symbol for the city itself, and in many ways there are similar links to be made with the football club. Perhaps that is why the club’s nickname is ‘The Imps’. During its history the club has enjoyed numerous ups and downs. In the 1901-1902 campaign they climbed to fifth in the second-tier of English football, for example. They’ve also made the last sixteen of the FA Cup on three occasions, making it to the quarter-finals once.

That quarter-final match came in the 2016-2017 season when they beat Premier League side Burnley 1-0 in order to set up a huge match with top-tier giants Arsenal. They eventually lost 5-0 to the Gunners, but it was part of a brilliant season that culminated in their promotion back to the Football League. They had been relegated from League Two – and the Football League itself – on the final day of the 2010-2011 season, so their return six years later was a sweet experience for all concerned.

Sincil Bank History

lincoln city fc stadium tour

Sincil Bank was built in 1894, exactly ten years after the club’s formation, opening the following year. In the intervening years Lincoln City played their games at John O’Gaunts, a ground that only had a players’ dressing room and offered no facilities for spectators. Even so, 2000 people watched the side beat Sheffield United in their first Football League game against Sheffield United on the 1st of October in 1892.

The move to Sincil Bank, just 300 metres to the South-East of John O’Gaunts, came about because of the club’s desire to continue its growth. Known as The Bank to Imp supporters, it hasn’t only hosted Lincoln City matches during its time. In 2008 the England U16 side played Scotland’s U16s as part of the Victory Shield. It was also the location for a rock concert featuring the likes of The Who, The Kinks and The Small Faces in 1966.

Future Developments

lincoln city fc stadium tour

Lincoln City were hoping to move to a new 12,000 seater stadium with adjoining retail park and other useful facilities, but they now plan to start work increasing capacity on the Stacey West stand at Sincil Bank, so the big move seems to be stalled for the moment.

This would create a new tier and increase overall capacity to 11,500, costing £2 million which is partly being raised by offering supporters the chance to invest their own money for a 3% return over periods of up to 10 years.

FANS REVIEWS

lincoln city fc stadium tour

Jim Pedley, 16th February 2019 - Lincoln City v Stevenage

Travel: We went early, on the train. A 15 minute journey from Wakefield to Doncaster, then the 10.24 direct train to Lincoln, which took about 45 minutes. A lovely easy trip, then a 15 minute walk in the sun, to Sincil Bank.

Refreshments: We had hospitality tickets, so headed for the Legends Lounge, which we arrived at before 12.30. It was a nice bar with no queues. We then enjoyed a free tour of the stadium and then a fantastic two-course meal by 2pm. Then we took our padded seats in Co-op Stand and had a great view!

Impressions: The stadium tour was a bonus. The stadium looks lovely in the sun! Lincoln City doesn’t need a new stadium. They just need a new stand to replace the small Selenity Stand on one side.

Atmosphere: It was a very nice hospitality lounge. The fan zone outside looks good too but I didn’t visit it. No problems with staff and stewards. Great atmosphere but poor football, apart from some cracking goals! The match finished 2-2.

Exit: Being in hospitality means post-match beer and player interviews. We stayed until about 6pm so no trouble getting away!

Enjoy: Treat yourselves to hospitality! At only fifty quid per person, this was brilliant!

Garden State 'El Clasico': Real Madrid, FC Barcelona To Play At MetLife Stadium This Summer

Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona will play an edition of 'El Clasico' at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 3, the Spanish soccer clubs announced on Tuesday, Mar. 19. Two of La Liga's biggest powerhouses will hold the friendly match as part of a preseason summer U.S. tour.

This will be the fourth edition of Spain's most historic rivalry played in the U.S. The first was at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, with Lionel Messi and Barcelona defeating their Madrid rivals 3-2 on Monday, July 29, 2017.

Barcelona and Real Madrid also took part in a U.S. summer tour in 2023. They brought 'El Clasico' to the Lone Star State and Barça won 3-0 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Real Madrid last played at MetLife Stadium against their other major rival Atletico Madrid on Friday, July 26, 2019. Atleti dominated this edition of 'El Derbi Madrileño' (The Madrid Derby) in a high-scoring 7-3 match.

While not in East Rutherford, Barcelona last played in New Jersey against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena in Harrison on Saturday, July 30, 2022. The Major League Soccer side lost 2-0 to the powerful squad from Catalonia.

Fans, Detroit officials speak on plan for new Detroit City FC stadium

By Terell Bailey

Updated on: May 18, 2024 / 12:08 AM EDT / CBS Detroit

(CBS DETROIT) — The Detroit City Football Club announced it will have a soccer-specific stadium in Detroit. Fans and city officials said they are excited about the new plan.

"I want them to have a permanent home in the city, and we're going to be supportive, and they're going to reach out to the community to start those conversations," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

According to the organization, millions of dollars have impacted small businesses in the City of Hamtramck from the club.

John Mozena with the Center for Economic Accountability said he finds the previous statement plausible.

"These stadiums don't create any meaningful economic impact on the city. All they are doing is switching where they go?" he said.

Mozena is also a Detroit City FC fan. He wonders who will play to construct the stadium. According to him, the team's current stadium was renovated in 2016.

"I think it's a wonderful spot for a city stadium. I look forward to assuming it's built, cheering for them. It's solely the issue of public financing that I have the issue with," he said.

CBS News Detroit asked the organization how the stadium will be paid for. Officials did not release the specifics of the building plan.

"My only concern and the concern of our organization and any economists who looks at this stuff is it shouldn't be on the taxpayers to pay in whole or in part for any stadium," Mozena said.

Mozena believes the organization may opt for the community benefits ordinance through the city.

He doesn't want the community responsible for paying for something that he believes may have little effect.

"Look at Ford Field or Comerica Park. How much economic development is around those things?" he said.

Many residents of the Corktown community were thrilled about the latest announcement. Most mentioned that the move would boost the surrounding areas.

Parking is of concern to some, but the growth the community could see would prove sufficient.

"Good luck. With the train station coming in, the two hotels, the Godfrey and Perennial, the amount of investment coming to this town is unbelievable," said Corktown resident Ryan Satko.

Detroit City FC's new Corktown stadium aims to be 'forever home of soccer in Detroit'

Soccer will soon have a new permanent home in the city of Detroit.

Detroit City FC announced it will build its own soccer-specific stadium in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood after playing at Cass Tech High School and then Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck since the club was founded in 2012. The goal for the new stadium, which is still being planned from design to finances, is to open in 2027 to provide a permanent home for the club and sport in the city.

"Southwest Detroit will be where we are building this stadium, and it will be where the forever home of soccer in Detroit is," Detroit City FC chief commercial officer Alex Wright said.

DCFC held an owner's meeting at Supergeil, a restaurant blocks away from the new stadium site on Michigan, on Monday night to celebrate the announcement of the new stadium and answer questions from supporters who own an equity stake in the club. Wright, chief operating officer Todd Kropp and chief executive officer Sean Mann — three DCFC co-owners ― explained as much as they could about the pending move.

Detroit City announced last week the club would be building a new soccer stadium in Corktown on the site of the long-abandoned Southwest Detroit Hospital. The stadium would replace the abandoned building, swapping the "blight" in the neighborhood as Mann described it for something uplifting the community.

"It's a site where we are not popping down a UFO that's going to be out of place," Mann said. "We're approaching it together (with) established communities, and in that sense, it is the ultimate way for us to give back to the city we love."

More: How Detroit City FC achieved 'storybook ending' in historic win over MLS' Houston Dynamo

The idea of a stadium has been on the club's radars for years coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mann said. They looked at various spots throughout the city before narrowing in on Corktown in the last 18 months. The determining factors were the easily accessible location off of two major highways and Michigan, the new life in the area with new establishments and the re-opening of Michigan Central Station , and the proximity to home for the owners who have lived in the neighborhood for years.

"It is the perfect site in the sense that it compliments things that are already here," Mann told the Free Press. "We're not trying to create a new neighborhood, right? We're tying into Mexicantown, we're tying into Corktown. ... We want the matchday to be fun, special, unique. So people having a second place, whether they are coming (to Supergeil) or some of the Mexican restaurants on Bagley, wherever. It's an experience, that's what you're selling. That's what sports are, an experience."

The location in a neighborhood outside of downtown was another selling point. The rest of Detroit's established pro sports teams play downtown around Woodward. Detroit City FC, which is still a relatively new club trying to grow, wants to stand out in a new location where there is still sports history, just down the road from the site of Tiger Stadium.

"I think it's important not to be in the center of downtown," Mann said. "I love our other teams and other venues but I think for us, we are never going to stand out in this market if we don't do things slightly different than the other teams."

Detroit City will continue to play in Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, a site supporters are sad to leave, until the new stadium is complete. The club's goal was always to find a permanent home in Detroit while still supporting and preserving the fervent energy of the fanbase for each home game.

"It's been important to us to make inroads in the city from day one and this is the biggest effort we've ever made," Mann said, "One thing I love about Hamtramck is that it's the historic stadium district and you've got all those amazing bars within walking distance that make matchdays so special. And this site, one of the few sites in the city, where that was possible.

Funding and rendering

The old hospital land for the stadium was purchased by an LLC in March for $6.5 million according to land records. The club said the financing details are still being finalized and will announce them "when they are finalized."

"To date, those who contributed to the project; it's friends and family of the existing board, existing partners and some siblings and some coworkers," Mann said. "There'll be some more money raised but I think, obviously, there'll be some debt taken on as well."

Detroit City is also in conversations with the City of Detroit about the stadium plans and said any word of investment from the city would be finalized in the coming months. Mann told the crowd mayor Mike Duggan has been "very supportive" of the effort and believes DCFC's stadium ask is relatively benign compared to others.

Owners told supporters in attendance they will be civic with how they finance the stadium, alluding to not asking for a large sum of public money to fund it, then later promised they wouldn't ask the state government for $1.5 billion like what Indianapolis just approved for a new soccer stadium in April.

"I think we approach it as philosophical as well as pragmatic," Mann said. "We are very aware of the pushback on stadiums across the country and we recognize we don't have the clout of an NFL team. We're not the Chicago Bears, we're not proposing a $5 billion option. I think that's kind of rooted in what we're trying to do.

"The mantra is smaller, more executable and more authentically Detroit that complements existing neighborhoods, not trying to replace them."

Club investors asked during the meeting Q&A if crowdfunding would be involved and Mann said the club would be open to it if fans wanted to contribute in any way. DCFC will also have sessions with stakeholders over the summer to receive their input on the stadium.

One of the things there will be input on is the stadium's design. Mann said there have been early renderings drawn up by a firm based in England, but the club chose not to present anything yet because the design hasn't been finalized.

"The reality is they are changing, they are evolving, and we don't want to put something out there that we are going to be backtracking from," Mann said. "There's still an info process we need to go through."

Mann did confirm the stadium will be larger than Keyworth, which seats just under 7,000 fans, and will be a standalone stadium. DCFC is in talks with other entities who could use the space to make it a "365" venue, which will determine things like if the playing surface is grass or turf. Other than that, the details will come later.

"Things are going to change, which they will in this process," Mann said. "I think that's why we're conservative with the renderings and talking about financials. Hopefully, we've built that trust with our fans so they know that we're going in and execute on a vision I think they've all bought into."

'Greatest story in American sports'

Detroit City FC was founded in 2012 by a group of five Detroit residents, three of whom spoke at the meeting. The club started in the National Premier Soccer League before moving up to the National Independent Soccer Association in 2019 then the USL starting in the 2022 season.

The club originally played at Cass Tech, paying $125 a game to use the field, before moving to Keyworth stadium in 2016. Now the club, which has grown to include a women's team and leagues for all ages around Detroit, will have a home to themselves.

"It's one of the most remarkable stories in pro sports," Mann said. "It started with five guys each distributed 2,000 bucks. And I think we've created something that was relevant to people that was worth caring about really quickly and we've taken that fan base and brought other people on board who are bought into what we're doing."

The location is where the idea of the club was born. Mann has lived in the neighborhood on West Grand Blvd. for 16 years and Wright and Tropp live in Corktown. Now the team will return to replace a rundown building in the area where the modern version of Detroit soccer was conceived.

"This is really where it all started," Mann said.

The new stadium positions DCFC to be prepared for the next step of American soccer, which owners said couldn't be predicted 10 to 20 years in the future, while committing to winning on the USL level. It is the next step in the competition evolution for a team that's already proven their mettle against the top competition in U.S. soccer, knocking out the MLS' Houston Dynamo in the U.S. Open Cup and advancing to the Round of 16, on Wednesday against Indy, for the first time ever with a chance to win it all.

"The stadium is a way to financially put us in position to be the leaders in the league, which is a hard thing to do," Mann said, "Part of that is giving us more resources to build out the support system to be a dominant force in the league.

"We are in position to be a force in American soccer, no matter what league we are in."
