The Salzburg Card

Practical - contactless - digital.

The Salzburg Card is an all-inclusive card in the true sense of the word!

With the Salzburg Card and all its benefits, visitors and locals alike can get to know the  Mozart city of Salzburg and its neighbouring communities easily and conveniently. One-time free admission to all  sights and museums , free use of public transport and numerous discounts are offered by many Salzburg for little money.

We make it easy for you ...

Pay once and enjoy everything - not many cities have such a simple and uncomplicated system as the Salzburg Card offers. Like a key in your pocket, it opens doors and gates both in the city centre and in the surrounding sights on the outskirts of the city. A total of 32 experiences are free of charge and almost 40 are included at reduced rates. At important hotspots such as the Festungsbahn, it guarantees fast access and thus also saves time. And as a digital version, the card can be used immediately after booking.

Three good reasons for the Salzburg Card

  • Experience culture and interesting facts in the heart of the old town!
  • Discover history and fun also in the countryside outside the city!
  • One prize, thousands of possible combinations.

A stay in Salzburg is inseparably linked with a trip to the Mozart museums, a visit to the Hellbrunn water features and a trip to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the most visited attraction in Austria outside Vienna. Some guests and many locals would also like to take a look at the less well-known and not so central sights. The Salzburg Card is the ideal companion for this, as it includes admission and thus guarantees risk-free enjoyment. It is just as easy to explore the Folklore Museum as the Toy Museum for the little ones (and grown-ups) and the Salzburg Christmas Museum on Mozartplatz. Explore the surrounding nature free of charge

The beauty of Salzburg is the natural backdrop for its baroque architecture. This green side can be experienced very well in the open-air museum Großgmain or during a ride with the cable car up the Untersberg. The Salzburg Card not only includes fast access to the Untersberg cable car - the journey to these sights just outside the city gates is also part of the card"s benefits.

It pays off. An example.

Suppose an adult person wants to discover the classic highlights of Salzburg and visits the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the fountains in Hellbrunn and the DomQuartier. The regular cost for this is 39.40 EUR. The Salzburg Card, which also includes a ticket for public transport worth at least 4.20 EUR, costs only 29.00 EUR. The advantage: if there is still time and energy left over, you could continue on with the zoo or the Mozart museums virtually free of charge.

All advantages of the Salzburg Card at a glance Unique FREE admission to all sights and museums Free travel on public transport (incl. Old Town Shuttle in July and August, except for the S-Bahn) Attractive discounts for cultural events and concerts Additional discounts for many destinations Partial fast access without queuing at the cash desk Arrival to the hotel from airport or train station included

The card is available for 24, 48 or 72 hours. The digital Salzburg Card can be conveniently booked online and immediately used on the smartphone. The card is also available at hotel receptions, tourist information offices at the main station and Mozartplatz, in ticket offices and at the airport.

Is the Salzburg Card worth it?

The Salzburg Card is already worthwhile from the use of just a few sights and has a very good price-performance ratio. Especially with a validity of 48 or 72 hours, the card pays off quickly, as many of Salzburg's most popular attractions are included in the services.

The following table shows how much you can save, using the 72-hour ticket during peak season as an example:

Especially in summer, the purchase price of the Salzburg Card is quickly recouped. The card is especially worthwhile if you also want to use the Untersbergbahn, as the ticket price for this is particularly expensive.

Basically, the more often you use your City Card, the more you benefit from it!

Gerhard Reus and the 24 hour Salzburg Card

The Salzburg Card allows you admission to most of the attractions in Salzburg at a fixed price. There are 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hour Salzburg cards, allowing you free admission within those timeframes. You can visit all the museums, head out to Hellbrunn Palace where the trick fountains are, and take a river cruise and a cable car to the peak of Untersberg.

It also includes buses to these places and public transport in the city center.

The city center, however, is walkable and you will only need bus number 25 for the Cable Car and Hellbrunn.

Is the Salzburg Card worth buying?

Provided you have time, and you want to visit at least two attractions that otherwise require an entrance fee, it is worth buying the card. It is the best deal you can get and by far the best city card I have seen anywhere. Right now it’s €29,- for a 24-hour card from May till November and €26,- in winter. If you only visit the fortress and Mozart‘s birthplace, you are almost there. So you get lots of entrances as a free extra if you get the card instead of paying single tickets. Furthermore, you can often skip the lines by just scanning your card.

Is the Salzburg Card really worth buying?

Well, the Untersberg Cable Car, for example, is €25,- for a return ticket. It’s included in a €29,- Card and it includes bus number 25 to get there. Meaning even if you only do the Cable Car, it’s cheaper to get the Card. With the Card, however, you also visit Hellbrunn palace, the trick fountains and the Salzburg Zoo if you wish to. It’s on the way of bus number 25.

Then you get back to the city and take the funicular to the fortress, visit Mozarts birthplace and Mozart’s residence, the Salzburg Museum and Domquartier, take a tour in the concert hall, take an elevator up to the museum of Modern art and a cruise ship along the Salzach river. All for the same price, the Cable Car would cost without the Card.

Sounds too good to be true, right? It sounds like I Am advertising the card, right? I am not. I am just a fan of it and would recommend it to everyone. I could sell them and get a 10% commission, but that’s not the reason I want you to buy one. I want you to buy a Salzburg card to make the most out of your stay in Salzburg.

When not to buy the Salzburg card?

If you don’t have time because you already have other plans, if you only spend a few hours in the city or if you don’t want to spend any money at all. It is fine to walk Salzburg for a few hours to see the main sights, and even if you stay for days, you can still find things you can do for free. The city is small, and there is enough to see entering none of the paid sights.

If you only do one thing in Salzburg, make it the fortress! And if you only do the fortress, you don’t need the card. If you don’t want to pay for the fortress either, go after closing time. Read our guide on things to do for free for more information on that. But if you do pay for the fortress and one more activity and you have a little extra time, it is again already worth getting the card. Think about it!

What does the Salzburg Card include?

The Salzburg Card includes all the highlights of the city. I will provide you with a list of things to do with the Salzburg Card from the most recommended to the least recommended. This list changes according to interests, and with a 72-hour card, you have more time even to do things I am not mentioning in this list.

In this article, I assume that your time is limited, and I don’t include all that there is. If you’re going to make your plan, you will get an informative brochure when you purchase the Salzburg Card. This list reflects my preferences and expertise.

#1 Hohensalzburg Fortress

Hoher Stock Festung Hohensalzburg Audio Guided Tour

If you only visit one sight, make it this one. The view is spectacular. From the old town of Salzburg, you can’t see the alps because there is Mönchsberg, one of the house mountains, in between. From the fortress, however, you see not only the city from above, but on the southern side, you have an impressive panoramic view.

There are museums like a string puppet museum, the fortress museum and the Rainer museum, an audio-guided tour up a tower, a church, a restaurant, and several viewpoints. You can spend a while at the fortress and should visit the museums, especially the audio-guided one, because that’s the only way to get up one of the towers.

However, it is mainly about the view, in my opinion. If you want to get into the fortress without visiting the museums and without a Salzburg card, read this post to find out how. The staterooms require an extra fee if you arrive after 11 am. My recommendation is to skip them, but if you want to see them, go before 11 am or pay the extra few euros.

With the Salzburg Card, you can skip the line at the funicular by scanning your card. The audio-guided tour to the tower is included in the card.

#2 Untersberg Cable Car

The final stop of bus number 25

This activity alone makes it worth getting the Salzburg card. The Cable car would cost you €25,- without the card. Bus number 25 from Mirabellplatz takes you to the cable car, it’s included in the card, and its last stop is in front of the cable car. Buses run every 20 minutes and stop right in front of the cable car, so it is as easy as it could be.

The cable car takes you up to 1776 meters/5826 feet above sea level. If the conditions are right, you can see to the other side of the lake district and far into Germany. There are two restaurants with good Austrian food, and there is an easy 30 minutes hike to the top of the mountain on the Austrian side, the Salzburger Hochthron, with 1852 meters.

Even if not required because it’s straightforward, here is a detailed guide on how to get to the Untersberg Cable Car.

With the Salzburg Card, you can skip the line at the cable car by scanning your card. Know that there is maintenance work twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn, and that the Cable Car is closed during these times. Check beforehand if it is operating while you are in Salzburg!

#3 Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains (Zoo and folklore museum optional)

Hellbrunn Trick Fountain Tour

Hellbrunn Palace and the trick fountains  are on the same bus as the cable car, bus number 25. For efficiency, I would recommend you visit Hellbrunn on your way back from the cable car. More on the efficient use of the Salzburg card below. The trick fountains are only open in summer. A visit to Hellbrunn is recommended anyway, but I only consider it a must if the trick fountains are operating.

The card includes the guided tour you need to access the trick fountains.

To be honest, I thought the fountains are for children until I visited them for the first time. They have a fascinating history and are a lot of fun. You have to join a guided tour to access the trick fountains. Their guides are knowledgeable and entertaining. Be prepared to get wet. There is no way to predict where the water comes from.

The museum in the castle is good. You get an audio guide and get to understand what the castle was. Don’t miss that. The museum is also open in winter. Furthermore, there is a park you should look at. In the park, there is a folklore museum, the yellow building on the hill, and on the other side of the hill, there is the Salzburg Zoo. The Zoo and the folklore museum are a preference, I would say. If you go to the folklore museum, you can take some stairs a little further up to get a view to the city.

#4 Concert Hall Tour

Herbert von Karajan by Anna Chromy

There is only one tour to the Concert Halls at 2 pm every day.  The Salzburg Festival is one of the main topics in Salzburg; however, without explanation, you won’t notice it. The tour is included, and the guides are fantastic. You get to see the old summer horse riding school from the inside. One scene from the sound of music. You also get to see either the big or the small concert hall and learn a lot in those 50 minutes. Everyone should join one of these tours when it is anyway included in the card.

The card includes the guided tour, the only way to see the concert hall without attending a concert.

#5 Mozart Birthplace

Mozart Birthplace

The birthplace is one of the main sights in Salzburg. Seeing it from the outside while strolling through Getreidegasse is enough if you are not interested in Mozart’s history. It’s information, no original furniture. Some paintings and some leftovers and in the high season many people visiting. But. You already know the deal. It’s all included, so you want to do everything you can.

If you would like to know more about the Birthplace, here is an  article about Mozart’s birth .

#6 Mozart Residence

The Main Entrance of Mozarts Residence

The same goes for Mozarts Residence. The history of the house is fascinating. Half of it got damaged during World War II and rebuilt in 1996. A Japanese insurance company mainly financed the reconstruction. Between the “Mozart Wohnhaus” sign and the Austrian flag, you can see a white line. That’s where the original house ends and the reconstruction starts. Otherwise, there are letters the Mozart family wrote, pieces of Mozart, instruments, and other legacies. Go there. It’s free with the card.

#7 Domquartier

Domquartier Herkules

Domquartier is my favorite history museum in Salzburg. It opened in 2014. Together with the Salzburg Museum, it’s the main place to learn about Salzburg’s history. With Domquartier, it’s worth visiting even if you are not into museums. Your walk begins in the old residence but leads from the staterooms to parts of the cathedral that would otherwise not be accessible. It leads you to the western gallery where the big organ is and from there to parts of Saint Peters monastery before you get back to the old residence. So even if you are not into museums, go there and walk the building!

The audio guide in Domquartier is included in the Salzburg Card. It’s especially nice to explore the staterooms and learn about the art on the ceiling.

#8 Salzburg Museum and Panorama Museum

The Salzburg Museum is equally worth visiting as Domquartier. There is an audio guide, and if you want to go deep, borrow it, and take your time.

One more thing is the Panorama. It has a separate entrance, so make sure not to miss it! The panorama painting shows you Salzburg and its surrounding from 1829 in a 25-meter long and 5-meter high 360-degree painting with the view from the fortress. What‘s fascinating about this painting is its history. There were no photographs yet, and the painter, after finishing, took his art in a horse carriage and toured Europe for ten years to introduce Salzburg to the world.

#9 Sound of Music World

This is for loyal fans. The Sound of Music world only opened in 2018. When I heard that there is a museum about the movie, I didn’t expect much. I thought someone wanted to make a quick buck, but after visiting, I can tell you it’s nice. There are interviews to watch and listen to and things to learn about our favorite movie and the real Trapp family. If you are into the Sound of Music, I would recommend going there.

#10 Catacombs

Salzburg Saint Peters Catacombs

The catacombs are at Saint Peter’s cemetery. I would recommend them for the view from the windows and for the experience of being in these caves. I would also recommend them because you will want to visit the cemetery at some point, anyway. And again. The catacombs are free with the card.

#11 River Cruise

River Cruise Boat in Salzburg

The river cruise is fun. The captain is engaging and entertaining. When you get back to the old town, the boat dances to a waltz. During the ride, you get some information. However, Salzburg is small, and you are out of the old town in no time. There is not a lot to see along the river. But again. It’s free with the card, it’s fun and if you don’t have other plans, go for it!

The card includes the ticket for the cruise. You should get it sometime before you go on the boat. More about the best timing to get the ticket in the guide on efficient use below.

#12 Mönchsberglift and Museum of Modern Art

Museum of Modern Art in Salzburg

I don’t consider the museum a must, but the elevator is terrific because of the stunning view from the top. If you like modern art, visit the museum. If you want to take a picture or enjoy the night view, just take the elevator! The viewpoint is one of the best in the city, and the way to get there couldn’t be easier.

Here is an article, if you would really like to know  about Modern Art in Salzburg .

#13 Haus der Natur

The house of nature, the natural science museum, is especially nice for children. It’s also nice because it’s old and has a long tradition. When I was a child, some parts of the museum already were the way they are nowadays, but they also added modern elements like the science center. I wouldn’t consider the museum a must, but if you are traveling with children or if you have enough time in the city and with the Salzburg card, it’s certainly recommended.

When can I skip the line? Where are the tours included?

Whenever you have to take a tour to enter a place like Hellbrunn or the concert halls, the tour is included. Fast-track entry is included in all the places where it’s necessary. The funicular to the fortress is the only place that gets crowded enough to wait in line for and there you just scan your card and go. Don’t worry about these things too much. Once you have a schedule, you can go on autopilot.

The Discounts

There are 20% discounts for tours and other activities. You can find them on the backside of the brochure. However, they are not worth considering. They are also only valid during the time the Salzburg card is valid, and you have a lot of things to do for free, so I would recommend sticking to those.

Another possibility would be to try to purchase the ticket for whatever activity you are up to while your Salzburg card is valid even if the time of the activity is later. And it’s worth mentioning that it is up to the service provider if they accept your card for discounts after expiration. Just don’t use it for discounted activities during the time you have all these free activities.

Which public transport is included in the Salzburg card?

The Salzburg Card includes no trains and doesn’t include buses for day trips. It includes buses in the city center, but you do not need them. The only bus that is included and necessary is number 25 to the Untersberg cable car and Hellbrunn Palace. The cable car is a must if it’s open and if you have a card and Hellbrunn is on the way so you should visit as well.

Obus in Salzburg

Other recommended sights included in the card are within walking distance. There are exceptions like the Stiegl Brewery and Hangar 7, which you might want to check out, but they are not my favorites and are therefore not mentioned in this list. For more information, read our  Salzburg public transport guide !

How much does a Salzburg Card cost?

There are 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours of Salzburg cards available. As of now, 2020, the price for the 24-hour card is €29,- in summer and €26,- in winter. The prices increase by a euro or two every year. The 48-hour card is €38,- which is not a lot more and the 72-hour card is €44,-. More on which one to get in the next chapter. Now let‘s do the math. How much money can you save on a 24-hour Salzburg card in summer 2020?

Untersberg Cable car: €25,-

Day ticket for the bus: €6,-

Hohensalzburg Fortress: €12,90

Hellbrunn Palace and fountains: €12,50

Domquartier: €13,-

Festival Halls Tour: €7,-

Mozart houses combi ticket: €18,-

Mönchsberg Elevator: €3,80

Salzach Cruise: €15,-

Salzburg Museum: €9,-

Total: €122,20 if you can manage to do all these things. In these calculations, I only included the things I consider essential to do with a Salzburg Card. Not the Museum of Modern Art, not the natural science museum and no Sound of Music world. With a 48 hour card, you can include these other sights and save even more.

There is no student discount on Salzburg cards, but tickets for children up to the age of 15 years are half price. You might have to go to the tourist information to purchase the children’s card. Children under the age of 6 get free admission to the museums anyway.

Where to buy a Salzburg Card?

If you are joining one of our free walking tours in Salzburg, you can ask your guide for a card. If it’s me, I have 24-hour cards in my backpack, but we are all independent, and others might not, but they are happy to point you to the next place where you can purchase one.

Don’t buy the Salzburg card online. There is no need to. Your hotel probably has Salzburg cards at the reception. They are the same price everywhere, so it doesn’t matter if you get them from the hotel or the tourist information. Also, they activate when you use them the first time, so it doesn’t matter when you buy them.

Some hotels only have 24-hour cards. In that case, go to the tourist information either at Mozart square or the train station. If you already know you will get the card, buy it when you arrive at the station. This way, you can use it early in the morning the next day when going to the cable car.

Should I get a 24h or a 48h Salzburg Card?

If you have the time to go for the 48-hour card, you should take it. 24 hour Salzburg Cards are fine if you don’t have more time, but you will have to skip some sights, and you will have to plan better. The 48-hour cards only cost €9,- more than the 24-hour card, so it is worth it if you have two days and you have planned nothing for your second day.

Salzburg card backside with details filled in

In case of time doesn’t matter for you, in case you are staying for many days, you can also get the 72-hour card. If time matters, however, rather than getting the 72-hour card, I would plan to see as much as you can within the 48-hour timeframe. Instead of spending three days with the Salzburg card, have a look at this article and plan a day trip for the third day.

How to activate the Salzburg card?

To validate the Salzburg Card, you have to fill in the fields on the back and use it. It activates once the museum scans the card. The reason you need to write your name, the date, and the time is that the buses don’t have a scanner, and the card is not transferable. Now there is a way to get free transport even with an expired card, but I will not point that out.

How long is the Salzburg Card valid?

The card is valid for 24, 48, or 72 hours from the moment you activate it to the same time the next day, the day after tomorrow, or even the day after that. So it doesn’t matter when you activate the card. It will not expire at the end of the day.

Can I use a Salzburg card for Hallstatt?

No! However, you get a 20% discount for the Salt Mines in Hallstatt, but it’s still not worth getting the card because it takes an entire day to go to Hallstatt. Don’t get a Salzburg card if you are planning to go to Hallstatt!  Read this instead to  find out how to best go to Hallstatt !

Does the Salzburg Card include the Sound of Music Tour?

The Salzburg Card doesn’t include the Sound of Music Tour.

Find out about the Salzburg Land Card!

For those of you staying in Salzburg and its surroundings for at least a week, the Salzburg Land card is interesting. “Land” meaning the state of Salzburg, the Salzburg Land card covers attractions all over the state of Salzburg. Attractions like spas, cable cars, and fortresses that would otherwise be expensive for a fixed price. You can get that card for either 6 or 12 days and save lots of money if you plan well.

Furthermore, you can choose if you want a 24-hour Salzburg card included in the Salzburg Land card or the toll for the Großglockner alpine street. I would go for the 24-hour Salzburg card. The toll is €36,50 per car at the moment, so if you are at least two persons, the toll is cheaper than the Salzburg card, and you will want to explore the city and its sights on one day during your stay anyway. More on that topic on the Salzburg Land Card website.

How to use the 24 hour Salzburg card most efficiently?

If you have a 48-hour or even a 72-hour card and enough time, you are not on a tight schedule, and you can roam. With the 24-hour card and only one or two nights in Salzburg, however, you might want to make the most out of it. Here I Am giving you instructions, a strategy, on how to do that.

Step 1 – Heading out to the Cable Car

Get bus number 25 before 8 am to catch the first cable car at 8.30 am in summer or at 9 am in winter. Most of the museums open at 9 am, but the buses already run early, that’s why the cable car is the first activity you want to do. It saves time.

Step 2 – Layover in Hellbrunn

On the way back from the Cable Car, get off at the stop called “Salzburg Schloss Hellbrunn” to go to the castle and the trick fountains.

Optional: If you visit the Zoo, which I only recommend with a 48h, a 72h card, with kids or because you are interested in Zoos, get off one stop earlier at “Zoo Salzburg”. It’s the same place as the castle so from the zoo you walk to the castle. After leaving the zoo, you can also check out the Monatsschlössel, the yellow building on the hill which houses the Folklore museum, before going to the castle.

Step 3 – Comeback and the Right Side of the River

When you are done in Hellbrunn, it’s time to retake bus 25 and come back to the city. Get off at the stop called “Theatergasse” to visit Mozart’s residence. The bus stops right in front of it. Mozarts residence is the only place included in the Salzburg card you visit on this side of the river.

Step 4 – Buy the Ticket, don’t take the Ride

Cross the river via Makartsteg, the “lock bridge”. On the other side of Makartsteg, there is the river cruise harbor on the right side. You  don’t take the boat yet,  but you reserve a ticket. In summer, you want to make sure you have a place booked. Pick the latest time possible. The museums are going to be closed after 5 pm, but the boat is still going.

Step 5 – The actual Oldtown

Depending on the time, you either visit Mozart’s birthplace in Getreidegasse or head straight to the concert hall to catch the 2 pm guided tour. If you need to take the 2 pm tour before, come back afterward to check out the birthplace.

Step 6 – Decisions

You can’t do it all with the 24-hour card. After the concert hall and Mozarts birthplace, you have the choice between the Salzburg museum and Domquartier, the two main historical museums which I like very much or you could visit some smaller places like the Sound of Music world, the catacombs or the Christmas museum. I would go with the two first mentioned museums. You can also try to spend minimum time in each of them and do them all.

Step 7 – The best for Last

The fortress is a must-do. I said it before. If there is only one sight you visit, make it the fortress. I would do it last, probably before the river cruise. Also because it stays open longer than other museums and even if it closes you can stay. Only the museums close, not the fortress itself. This last part very much depends on the season. In winter the museums inside the fortress also close at 5 pm so it doesn’t make much of a difference but in summer they close at 7 pm and you can go there after everything else is closed.

Step 8 – Finishing

Museum der Moderne Viewpoint

The last river cruise in summer runs at 8 pm so ideally you have a ticket for the 8 pm river cruise and enjoy the ride. After that, you could still go to the Mönchsberglift, the elevator up to the Museum of Modern Art. The museum will be closed, but the elevator operates until 9 pm or 11 pm depending on the time of the year. The top of Mönchsberg is one of the best places to enjoy the night view so give it a try if you still have energy left. It only takes 30 seconds by elevator.

Is there a difference between using the Salzburg Card in high or in low season?

As mentioned before. The plan, in particular the end of your busy Salzburg card day, depends very much on the season. In summer you can fit in more places than in winter because the fortress and the cruise are possible later in the day. This list also doesn’t include all the sights included in the card. It only consists of the sights I love the most. It might vary from person to person.

What if I arrive in Salzburg at noon and want to start right away?

That is even better. The cards are valid for 24 hours from the moment you activate them. It will be less exhausting for you to start at noon and make it for two half days. But the plan for most efficient use doesn’t change. You still take the bus to the cable car early in the morning.

I hope this guide is helpful to you. If you have any further questions, if anything is unclear or you have feedback that I could use to improve the information provided, please send me a message. I am happy to help, and you would help others because I will implement your question in this article.

This is salzburg - a unique city.

Centuries-old traditions, top-class music and cultural events, culinary delights and international art: Salzburg , known as the home of Mozart and a UNESCO heritage site for more than 25 years, celebrates both its prince-archbishop roots and the spirit of creative freedom and continuous renewal that already existed back then.

Take a stroll through the cobblestoned historic centre and you'll instantly feel the town's elegance, with the prince-archbishops' architectural, artistic and social heritage visible on every corner. Explore the old town's five squares Residenzplatz, Domplatz, Mozartplatz, Kapitelplatz and Alter Markt, considered the most beautiful in Salzburg, then pop into the traditional shops in famous Getreidegasse on the way to Mozart's birthplace. Or how about a play or a concert at the famous Salzburg Festival ?

Salzburg's charm also lies in the small moments. Wander through the perfectly manicured Mirabell Gardens, or watch the Salzach River wind its way through the city from Hohensalzburg Fortress or one of the surrounding mountains – that's how the locals enjoy their city, that's Salzburg's unique "Lebensgefühl".

Getting to Salzburg is a breeze with daily flights from London and multiple flights per week from other UK airports (check the schedule here ) as well as train connections from European cities.

'Lebensgefühl' in Salzburg means ...

... living for the city.

Salzburg owes its world-wide fame to the incomparable city charm, the scenic beauty of its surroundings and the fact that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here in 1756.

... enjoying music and theatre all night long

During the Salzburg Festival, music and theatre can be found in every concert hall, every garden, square and street in the city.

... snacking the real deal

The original "Salzburger Mozartkugel" (German for "Mozart ball") was invented at Cafe Fürst in Salzburg and is still hand-made today. Taste the difference!

... walking through signs of the times

Experience Salzburg's historic centre on a leisurely stroll. The locals are especially fond of their "Durchhäuser", narrow lanes often used as short cuts, e.g. along Getreidegasse.

Salzburg Card Attractions: What’s included in the Salzburg Card

The Salzburg Card arguably is the best deal you can get on sightseeing in Salzburg. What is a Salzburg Card? Salzburg Cards include almost all the paid attractions in Salzburg for a fixed price. If you would like to go all-in on sightseeing in Salzburg, the Card is a must. In this article, I will introduce all the Salzburg Card attractions to you and will give you tips on how to best use your Salzburg Card.

What’s included in the Salzburg Card?

  • FREE ADMISSION to all tourist attractions and museums
  • Free PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION in the city center
  • DISCOUNTS at numerous excursion destinations
  • Some sights offer FAST TRACK ENTRANCE so you don’t have to wait in line

Salzburg Card Attractions in the City Center

The Salzburg Card basically includes all of the paid attractions in the city of Salzburg for a fixed price. That makes it an incredible deal, as soon as you are planning to visit two or more paid attractions and have a day to make the most of your Salzburg Card. Check out this article if you’re not sure yet whether or not a Salzburg Card is right for you . Here are all the Salzburg Card attractions in the city.

None of them are more than 5 minutes walking apart.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Funicular

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is the landmark of Salzburg. If there is only one attraction you pay for in Salzburg, make it the Hohensalzburg fortress! It’s not only historically relevant as the namesake of Salzburg and as the best-preserved fortress in Europe but the best part about the fortress is actually the views. Furthermore, there are several museums telling the history of the fortress and of Salzburg itself. One of which takes you up to a tower, the highest point on the fortress and therefore one of the best views. If you have a Salzburg Card, the fortress is an absolute must.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the Salzburg Card Attractions

The Salzburg Card does not only include the entrance fee to the fortress but also the funicular which enables you to reach the attraction in less than a minute without any effort and even without waiting in line. The funicular to the fortress is one of the fast track attractions What’s not included in the card are the staterooms. For a while, there was an early bird ticket available which included the staterooms before 11 am but I think that doesn’t exist anymore. I would not bother paying extra for the staterooms , except if you are an art history buff, since you have many free Salzburg Card attractions anyway.

Salzburg and Panorama Museum

The Salzburg Museum is the oldest history museum in Salzburg . If you have even a hint of interest in the history of Salzburg and are in possession of a Salzburg Card, the Salzburg Museum is one more must-see Salzburg Card attraction. Located on the main square, Residence square, the museum is housed in the new archiepiscopal residence. On several floors, you get to learn about different chapters of the history of Salzburg. Besides the Salzburg Museum, the Panorama Museum is also included in the Salzburg Card. The Panorama Museum is always part of a ticket to the Salzburg museum but, for €4,50, can also be visited separately and has a separate entrance. Make sure, therefore, not to miss the Panorama museum when you visit the Salzburg Museum with the Salzburg Card. Both attractions are included in the Card.

Domquartier Museum

Domquartier is another history museum but while the Salzburg Museum dates back to the 19th century, Domquartier opened in 2013. Domquartier is located in the old archiepiscopal residence and includes the residence gallery, the archbishop’s stateroom, and parts of the cathedral and saint peters monastery that would otherwise not be accessible.

The latter two are the reason you should visit Domquartier with a Salzburg Card, no matter if you care about history or museums. When walking from the old residence into the Salzburg Cathedral you walk on the balconies, on the arches that connect these buildings, and that alone offers a unique viewpoint. From those arches, you enter the west gallery of the cathedral which provides a stunning view of the church.

salzburg tourist card

In 2021 the archdiocese of Salzburg, unfortunately, introduced an entrance fee to the cathedral. Sadly, the cathedral now is one of the only sights that is not included in the Salzburg Card attractions but with the Salzburg Card, you can get a free glimpse of the interior of the cathedral from the Domquartier museum.

Mozart’s Birthplace

Besides the fortress, Mozart’s Birthplace is the most popular sight in Salzburg. Everyone has to take a look at the birthplace, at least from the outside. Inside the birthplace, you find information about Mozart on three floors. There is no original furniture but there are some original souvenirs. Now, if you would not have the Salzburg Card, I would tell you only to visit the birthplace, if you are genuinely interested in Mozart. With a Salzburg Card, the interior of the birthplace is of course a must-see attraction as well.

Here is an article, if you would like to know more about Mozart’s birthplace in Salzburg .

salzburg tourist card

Mozart’s Residence

The residence of Mozart is, same as the birthplace, a must with a Salzburg Card.  The residence is where Mozart moved from his birthplace when he was 17 years old before he moved on to Vienna at the age of 35. Without a Salzburg Card, I wouldn’t recommend paying the €12,- entrance fee unless you are a real fan of Mozart but with a Salzburg Card you already know the deal. The Mozart residence is one of the Salzburg Card attractions.

Haus der Natur (Natural Science Museum)

Haus der Natur, the natural science museum is a must, if you are traveling with children but even if you are not traveling with children and have the time and a Salzburg card, you should probably have a look at Haus der Natur. Parts of Haus der Natur were exactly like they were 30 years ago when I was a child. I have vivid memories of the dinosaur at the entrance, the crocodile, the astronaut section, and many other fascinating things.

Mönchsberg Elevator and Museum of Modern Art

In a decade working in tourism, I have not met many travelers who liked their experience at the modern art museum. It might be interesting if you are really into modern art, but most people are not and there are better modern art pieces in public space and free of charge as a part of the Salzburg Foundation. Here you find an article on the Free Walking Tour blog explaining all of the modern art pieces by the Salzburg Foundation .

But even if the modern art museum is not a must, it’s included in the Salzburg and what is also included in the Salzburg Card is the elevator to the museum of modern art. The museum is located on Mönchsberg mountain, about 200 meters above the old town. Inside the museum, there is also a restaurant. That’s why the elevator often runs late in the evening and offers an effortless way to get a fantastic night view but also during the day it’s worth taking the elevator to admire the view.

Catacombs at Saint Peter’s Cemetery

It is believed that early Christians hid in the catacombs of Saint Peter’s cemetery. Saint Peters Cemetery is free of charge anyway, but the catacombs at Saint Peter’s Cemetery would cost a few euros without a Salzburg Card. The catacombs are a Salzburg Card attraction and the cemetery is a must-see sight, which also makes the catacombs a must-see sight, in case you have a Salzburg Card.

Guided Tour at the Concert Hall

The only way to see the inside of the concert hall without attending a concert during the Salzburg Festival is the guided afternoon tour. Luckily the guided tour at the concert hall is another Salzburg Card attraction. With the Salzburg Card, you can join the tours free of charge instead of paying €7,-. If it fits your schedule  (in 2022 they usually happen at 2 pm) I would highly recommend taking the tour. They take about 50 minutes are conducted in English and German and show you at least 2 of the 3 concert halls. Here is an article on the Free Walking Tour Blog in case you want to know more about the Salzburg Festival .

Salzburg City Boat Cruise

Salzburg is not London or Budapest. Taking the sightseeing boat is slightly pointless but still fun. The ride takes about 40 minutes but after about 5 minutes you are outside of the old town area. There are no attractions, just trees to the left and to the right but the captain usually has great humor, and before the boat docks again, it dances the Waltz on the river. Since the boat is included in the Salzburg Card, I would recommend taking it. Note that you should get the ticket beforehand. Here you find another article that helps you perfect your plan to make the most of your Salzburg Card .

If you are traveling with children, the toy museum is a must-see Salzburg Card attraction, just like Haus der Natur, the natural science museum. Besides featuring their famous collection of toys, the museum also encourages kids to participate and try out a variety of toys.

Christmas Museum

The Christmas Museum is a private collection of Christmas decorations. They were collected by one single person over a period of 40 years. The museum is small but it’s right in the heart of the old town in front of the Mozart statue, so you will pass by anyway and it offers an authentic idea of what Christmas in Austria is like, even in the middle of summer.

Salzburg Card Attractions in the Surroundings of Salzburg

Most of the attractions included in the Salzburg Card are within walking distance in the old town but some of them are in the surroundings of Salzburg. Most of them are on the same bus line, bus number 25.

Untersberg Cable Car

The last stop of bus number 25 is probably the best attraction of all the attractions that are included in the Salzburg Card. The Untersberg Cable Car is a cable car that takes you up to 1800 meters. The Cable Car alone makes the Salzburg Card worth it since the Cable Car costs €26,50 in 2022 and the Salzburg Card includes the bus and the cable car for €30,-. If you are still not convinced about the value of a Salzburg Card, here you can figure out, if a Salzburg Card is worth it for you .

salzburg tourist card

Hellbrunn Palace and the Trick Fountains

Hellbrunn Palace and the trick fountains are on the same bus line as the Untersberg Cable Car, bus number 25, about halfway to the Cable Car. You can, therefore, take the cable car first, and on your way back to the city, hop off the bus and visit Hellbrunn Palace. Hellbrunn palace houses an interesting museum but the highlight of Hellbrunn are the trick fountains.

salzburg tourist card

The trick fountains consist of attractions powered by water . In particular, the archbishop’s table seats unexpectedly splash water, but of course, water does not come out of the archbishop’s seat, but only from his guests’ seats. In addition, there is a crown that floats on water, fountains and statues, and the mechanical theatre. The mechanical theater features 200 water-driven figures representing society from the 1600s and performing different tasks. Here is an article, if you would like to know more about Hellbrunn .

Salzburg Zoo Hellbrunn

The Salzburg Zoo is also located in Hellbrunn and one more of the Salzburg Card attractions. The Zoo is of course not a must, but it’s nice, if you are traveling with children, if you like Zoos or if you have plenty of time. The Zoo is one bus stop after Hellbrunn when coming from the city and one-stop before the palace when coming from the cable car but you could also just walk from the Zoo to the Palace or from the Palace to the zoo. Bus number 25 by the way runs every 20 minutes.

Folklore Museum

The folklore museum is also located in Hellbrunn, between the zoo and the palace on a hill. It featured traditional Austrian costumes, Krampus masks, antique furniture, and more. The folklore museum is included in the Salzburg Card, the hike to the castle is worth it, since there is a great viewpoint right next to it, but if you want to take the effort and the time, is up to you. The Folklore Museum is certainly not a must-see Salzburg Card attraction.

Stiegl beer brewery and Museum

The Stiegl beer brewery is the only Salzburg Card attraction in the surroundings of Salzburg that is not reached by bus number 25. Bus lines 1 and 10 will take you to the bus stop “Bräuhausstraße” and these buses are included in the Salzburg Card since the Stieglbrauwelt is still within the boundaries of the city.

I’m not a typical Austrian. I dislike beer. The Stiegl brewery would not be of much interest to me. Consequently, it would depend on what you are interested in. Since you must take the bus, take a guided tour, and taste the beer, a Stiegl Brauwelt visit requires about half a day. The guided tours take about 1,5 hours and there are three beers included in your visit and in the Salzburg Card.

What is not included in the Salzburg Card?

Sadly, the Salzburg Card is not an attraction that’s included in the Salzburg Card. The Salzburg Cathedral was free of charge, since a church and in my opinion, should remain free of charge. But in addition to charging for entering a church, the Cathedral is the only paid attraction in the old town, that is not included in the Salzburg Card. Maybe that’s gonna change but for now, I recommend getting the Salzburg Card and having a look at the Cathedral from the west gallery that you can only access by accessing Domquartier museum.

What else is not included in the card? Most tours, for example, the popular Sound of Music tours are not included in the card. Mirabell Palace is also not included in the Card but that’s because there is no entrance fee for the garden and not much to see at the Palace. I also need to mention, that if you don’t want to spend any money on sightseeing, there is enough to in Salzburg for free. Here is an article. if you are looking for free things to do in Salzburg.

What discounts does the Salzburg Card offer?

The Salzburg Card includes discounts, for example on the Residence Concerts, on the original Sound of Music Tour, the Hohenwerfen Fortress, the hop on hop off bus, the salt mines in Berchtesgaden, and various other tours and attractions in and around the city. Most of these discounts are 20%. However, these discounts are officially only valid during the validity of your Salzburg Card.

During the validity of your Salzburg Card, however, you have plenty of free things to do. Attending a concert might be an option since other attractions are closed in the evening but a visit to the salt mines would be a day trip and even something like a Sound of Music tour would take half a day. In my opinion, the discounts you get with the Salzburg Card are, therefore, not really worth considering.

What you might want to consider is asking nicely, if the discount can be applied, even if your Salzburg Card is expired or has not yet started or you could just show the card and see what happens.

What public transport is included in the Salzburg Card?

Public transport is included in the Salzburg Card in the center of Salzburg and to the Untersberg Cable Car. In the center of Salzburg, you don’t need public transport. As mentioned before, none of the attractions in the city are more than 5 minutes walking apart. You most likely need bus number 25 to the Untersbergs Cable Car since the cable car is one of the best Salzburg Card attractions. Maybe you also need bus number 1 or bus number 10 to get to the Stiegl Brauwelt.

Day trips, such as the bus to Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden, or Werfen Ice Caves, are not included in the Salzburg Card and the tickets to these destinations must be purchased separately. However, if you already have a Salzburg Card, taking a day trip at the same time doesn’t make much sense anyway.

How to buy a Salzburg Card?

The Salzburg Card used to look like a bank card and you got it at the tourist information or at every hotel and hostel front desk. That was convenient and still is but nowadays you can also purchase the Salzburg Card online and use it on your phone, like here on Get your Guide. Getting an online Salzburg Card saves you 3 euros and showing your phone instead of an actual card, might be more convenient.

Travel Tyrol

Austria travel blog, salzburg card review and proposed itineraries, why it's not a rip-off.

Salzburg has a lot more to offer than a few Sound of Music filming locations. The Salzburg Card provides the proof with free access to 24 world class attractions including the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Hellbrunn Palace and the birthplace of Mozart.

The view over Salzburg from the Hohensalzburg Fortress included in the Salzburg Card.

We’ve used the Salzburg Card on two occasions and each time got more than our money’s worth. The first time was on a family day trip from Innsbruck, the second on a 3-day visit with a friend and the third to follow in The Sound of Music in Salzburg .

Table of Contents

Why consider the Salzburg Card?

The Salzburg old town is a UNESCO world heritage site. As such, there are plenty of historical sites to explore in quite a small geographical area. One of these is the Hohensalzburg Fortress that watches over the city. Even if you’re not interested in the history, you would want to get up there for the excellent views it offers over Salzburg and surroundings.

However, the Salzburg Card doesn’t only include historical sites and museums. It also takes you on a river cruise, gives you a taste of famous Austrian beer, introduces you to the animals in the Salzburg Zoo, ferries you up a mountain, and lets you get wet in the gardens of Hellbrunn Palace .

A cruise on the Salzach River is included in the Salzburg Card.

What’s more is that the Salzburg Card includes the public transport that takes you to the included attractions. AND it is valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours from the time you first use it and not only on specific calendar days. In addition, you receive a discount on some other attractions and activities like the hop on hop off bus tours.

The Salzburg Card Price

*Winter price from 1 November to 30 April

How do you know the intention is not to rip you off? The Salzburg Card Price is reduced in winter when some of the attractions are closed. But don’t worry, there are still a lot of really nice things to see and do in Salzburg in winter .

Where to buy the Salzburg Card

Buy the Salzburg Card at any Salzburg information and ticket office. In addition, most hotels sell the Salzburg Card. If you buy it online, you must exchange your voucher for the actual card at the main tourist information office on Mozart Square in the Salzburg old town or the one at the main station. Remember to grab a Salzburg Card booklet, listing all the attractions with their opening times, when you get your card.

The tourist information office where you buy the Salzburg Card is on Mozart Square where the horse carriages depart from.

How we made the most of our salzburg card.

Our day trip to Salzburg from Innsbruck started at the tourist information office where we bought our tickets. As we already had an idea what we wanted to see and do, the tourism official helped us by marking everything on a map. She also gave us valuable advice on how to get to Hellbrun Palace with the help of the free public transport included in the Salzburg Card.

The excavations at the Salzburg Cathedral is included in the Salzburg Card.

We started our tour at the Salzburg Cathedral and had a look at the cathedral excavations (€3,50). From here, we took a leisurely stroll through the Salzburg old town to Mozart’s birthplace (€11). After learning some fascinating facts about the musical wunderkind we grabbed some brunch-on-the-go at the little Spar supermarket in the same building.

The Hellbrunn Palace trick fountains are included in the Salzburg Card

Brunch in hand, we made our way along the Salzach River to the docking station for a leisurely cruise (€15). A bus trip (€4,80 return) to Hellbrunn Palace followed where we had lots of fun getting wet under Archbishop Markus Sittikus’ trick fountains (€12.50).

Back in Salzburg, we used the Salzburg Card for the last time to explore the Hohensalzburg Fortress (€12.90). Our day was rounded off perfectly with a beer and some traditional food at a local festival on Mozart square before heading back to Innsbruck.

Salzburg Card Price = €29

Normal Attraction Prices = €59.70

Total Savings = €30.70

This time, I had a day and a half to explore Salzburg with a good friend from South Africa. Irma and I bought the 48-hour Salzburg Card at the Altstadt Hotel Hofwirt where we stayed. Since our room wasn’t ready yet when we arrived around noon, we set off immediately for the Salzburg old town with our cards in hand.

Read more: An honest review of the Altstadt Hotel Hofwirt Salzburg

Our first stop was the Domquartier Salzburg (€13), the cathedral museum complex. We were quite disappointed to find some areas closed with no reasons given. However, we marvelled at Rembrandt’s Old Woman Praying in the art gallery and took in the views of Mozart Square from the terrace above the cathedral arcade.

When it was time to go inside the cathedral, entry was denied. It was only when we stepped outside that we found out why we couldn’t access so many areas. The reason was a very important meeting of the Order of the Holy Grail to Jerusalem. I kid you not. It was like a scene from a Dan Brown novel, and the arrival of the knights and other very important guests kept us intrigued and entertained for a long time.

Knights arrive at the Salzburg Cathedral which is included in the Salzburg Card.

After all the excitement, we took the funicular to the nearby Hohensalzburg Fortress (€12,90) before heading back to our hotel.

Our first stop on day 2 was the Mozart Residence (€11). From here, we walked across the street to Mirabell Gardens before taking the bus (€4,80 return) to Hellbrunn Palace (€12.50). It was our best intention to go to the Stiegl-Brauwelt and taste some beer from here, but we got side-tracked by a flea market on the banks of the Salzach River.

Hellbrunn Palace is included in the Salzburg Card.

We attended the Mozart Dinner Concert in the evening for which we could have received a 5% discount if we bought the tickets after buying the Salzburg Card.

Salzburg Card Price = €38

Normal Attraction Prices = €54.20

Total Savings = €16.20

The bottom line: We saved money with the Salzburg Card even on a very relaxed 48-hour schedule. The 72-hour card gives you even more flexibility.

When not to consider the Salzburg Card

Obviously, if your time is limited or you just want to visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress and otherwise walk through the Salzburg old town and Mirabell Gardens, you might be better off buying individual tickets.

  • This article is only meant to illustrate that the Salzburg Card is indeed good value for money. Visit the  official website  for a complete list of all the attractions and services as well as the opening times and other relevant information.

The Salzburg Card sounds like a good deal and a great way to see the city’s highlights. I’d love to visit, and I would definitely take advantage of this. Those trick fountains look awesome!

I will be there next month and I can’t wait. I will most likely be doing a day trip. Looks like that there is so much to see and do.

Absolutely stunning views of the castle from boat on the Salzach River. Amazing picture! Having heard the pros of the Salzburg card, guess its worth it when in Salzburg:)

Bob R

I second your vote – like similar cards in other cities, it’s a terrific deal. I used one last year on a whim, deciding to spend about 20 hrs in the city while in transit. Mostly museums I hadn’t been to you yet but also another trip up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Koen

Awesome to read this post with a clear overview of what’s included in the Card, and, what you can save. We are budget travellers, so this is very useful if we would visit Salzburg.

Carolina Colborn

I will visit 4 in 48 hours and save the same amount as I pay for the card. Great value!

Nick Wheatley

The Salzburg card does sound like a great deal. We often wonder if we should buy these city cards as we’re worried we’ll spend so much time rushing from one attraction to the next trying to fit everything in within the allotted time that we won’t stop to enjoy ourselves.

Salzburg seems so compact and filled with cools sites that it would be easy to get your money’s worth with this card though. Especially if you get a river cruise and a chance to sample some beer!

Jenna

Thanks for the great breakdown! I always wonder if these cards are a good value for their money. Salzburg looks like such a wonderful city and I will definitely get the Salzburg Card when we visit next summer. Looks like so many great things are included with the card! I’d love to visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress, take the Cable Car and take a river cruise. Can never resist trying some local beer, too!

Haze Tolentino

I am a lover of UNESCO sites. I’ve never been there but I will include it on my list! And I think, based on the photos, Salzburg Card is really not a rip-off. Were you able to explore everything in the area?

Travelling Dany

I’ve been musing over a trip to Salzburg for their Christmas markets and thus this article has been particularly useful to me. I think that the Salzburg Card might be a great option to save some money, as we’re not going to rent a car. Thank you very much for the info!

sabrina

Great post! I always enjoy insights of this kind of “tourist options”.. I’m always like “naaah, not worth it”. But when you look deep into what’s included (as you’ve done here) it’s actually very convenient!! Especially for weekend getaways, I gues. Safe travels!

Anisa

I have done cards like this in other cities and I agree the thing that determines if they are a good value or not is what you are planning on doing! I usually want to see as much as possible so these cards are a great deal. Looks like you did a good job of making the most of them too.

Anya Carion

I adore Salzburg! I visited about two years ago and fell in love! I had no idea about the Salzburg card, I probably wasted so much money ahhh 🙁 Next time I’ll be sure to get it!

Ariana del rio

There are two things I love in the world, and both are mentioned in this article, Sound of music and Mozart! The card is the way to go, and we did something similar for 3 days in Copenhagen. Was totally worth it. So many places to visit when I finally make it over to Austria. Waiting for a spring or Summer trip though

This Epic World

This is a fab idea! I love these cards that allow you to explore a place by yourself rather than going with a tour agency

yasmin

Salzburg seems like a cool city! I’ve never been there and usually i’m not much of a planner, so i wouldn’t even think about this haha. So thanks for the tip! It will definately safe some money!

Nathalie Salcedo

I love this <3 very detailed and informative. The card seems to be a very good deal as well I supposed. So much things to see and do here.

Sarah

Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate all the prices you put in the post. It make it so helpful when planning a trip and this Salzburg Card sounds great!

Lizzie

Amazing – I did not know there was so much to do in Salzburg! The city card sounds like a really good deal, normally I find them a bit of a rip-off! You’ve placed Salzburg firmly on my to-do list, thanks for sharing!

Josephine

I’ll definitely remember the Salzburg card next time I go to visit. Great post and thank you for the tip!

AUSTRIA , DESTINATIONS , EUROPE

Is the salzburg card worth it in 2024 my honest review.

Salzburg is one of Austria’s most enticing cities, looking much like it did when Mozart lived there 250 years ago. It is not a cheap destination but there is one way you may be able to save money in Salzburg.

Its city pass gives you free entry to many of the top attractions and activities. But is the Salzburg Card worth it?

In my view, it would be difficult not to save money using the Salzburg Card. It is worth it even if you only visit two or three attractions in a day. Choosing higher-priced attractions such as the Untersberg cable car will maximise these savings.

Get the lowdown in my Salzburg Card review. Discover what is included, how much it costs and where to buy it.

All information and prices are taken from the Salzburg Card official website and are correct as of March 2024.

aerial view of rooftops of salzburg with river in background

The Salzburg Card provides free access to the city’s top attractions and free use of public transport

Types of pass: 24, 48 or 72 hours

Cost: From €28 – 46 (pricing is seasonal)

What are the Advantages of the Salzburg Card?

The Salzburg Card gives you free access to the city’s top attractions. Some of these include fast-track admission, meaning you can enter without queuing.

The pass also offers free public transport (except S-railways / S-Bahn) plus discounts on cultural events, concerts and excursions.

How it Works

Similar to the London Pass , the Salzburg Card works as a sightseeing pass.

You choose the duration of your city pass –  24, 48 or 72 hours – and then download this to your smartphone. For the duration of your pass’s validity, you can visit as many of the included attractions as you can fit in.

Alternatively, you can choose a physical credit card-size card.

What is Included in the Salzburg Card?

At the last count, close on 30 attractions and tours were included in the Salzburg Card. Here are some of the most popular museums and attractions that you can see for free:

interior of birthplace of mozart in salzburg with period furniture

The pass includes discounts on the wonderfully kitsch Mozart Dinner Concert and Salzburg Cathedral.

You can check the full list of attractions and activities that are free with the Salzburg Card on the official website .

City buses are included in the Salzburg Card. However, this is of limited value. Salzburg is a walkable city and you are only likely to need a bus if you are heading out to the Untersberg cable car and Hellbrunn Palace.

The Salzburg Card is not valid on S-railways (S-Bahn).

Which Attractions Are Not Included in the Salzburg Card?

Even to my critical eye, the Salzburg Card is pretty comprehensive. A notable exclusion is the ever-popular Sound of Music tour

Do You Have to Use It on Consecutive Days?

The Salzburg Card has to be used on consecutive days. For example, if you have a 72-hour pass and start using it at 3 pm on a Thursday, it will be valid for that day, Friday and Saturday until 2:59 pm.

pretty square in salzburg with white and yellow stucco buildings and central fountain

Prices in 2024

The cost of your Salzburg Card is determined by the duration you select and the time of year you visit.

It comes in three flavours: 24, 48 or 72 hours. The longer the duration, the cheaper it is on a Euro per day basis.

Adult prices apply to those aged 16 and over. Child prices are for those aged 6 to 15.

January 1 – April 30; November 1 – December 31 24 hour pass – Adult €28 | Child €14 48 hour pass – Adult €36 | Child €18 72 hour pass – Adult €41 | Child €20.50 May 1 – October 31 24 hour pass – Adult €31| Child €15.5 48 hour pass – Adult €40 | Child €20 72 hour pass – Adult €46 | Child €23

You can buy your Salzburg Card online here , or pick one up at your hotel reception, at tourist information offices in and around the city, at ticket bureaus or the airport.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Salzburg Card

1. Plan your itinerary

A little research can go a long way. Identify which attractions you would like to visit and whether they are included in the pass. This will help you decide if the Salzburg Card is worth it for you.

2. Consider transit times

Don’t just look at a list of Salzburg attractions in isolation. If you are short on time, consider how long it will take to travel between the places on your draft Salzburg itinerary, clustering them by locality if possible.

3. Don’t try to squeeze too much in

This is the biggest danger of city cards. By trying to visit as many of the included attractions as possible, you risk becoming completely frazzled.

4. Prioritise high-value attractions

You get the most bang for your buck by using your Salzburg Card for entry into the more expensive Salzburg attractions. Using the pass for attractions like Salzburg’s Mozart sites or the Untersberg cable car will help you maximise its benefits.

5. Check opening hours in advance

Some Salzburg attractions are closed on certain days of the week.

Is the Salzburg Card Worth it?

The Salzburg Card will save most travellers money. That said, there are some types of travellers for whom this Salzburg city pass will be better than others.

Who is the pass good for?

If you want to see as much of Salzburg as possible – Then the Salzburg Card is for you. The more you use it, the more money you will save.

If you are spending longer in Salzburg – Although you are likely to save money using a Salzburg Card if you are in town for a day, these savings will be magnified if you stay longer.

If you want to set your budget in advance – No one likes a nasty shock when they check their credit card statement at the end of a holiday. This Salzburg city pass allows you to control a chunk of your vacation budget.

If you are looking for convenience – There’s a lot to be said for not having to purchase individual tickets and fast-track entry.

Who should skip the pass?

If you are on a budget – It can be challenging to stretch your travel budget to paid-for attractions.

I f you have already visited the big-ticket items – Perhaps you have already taken the Unterberg cable car or visited the DomQuartier? The more expensive Salzburg Card attractions generate the biggest savings.

If you are looking for a relaxed itinerary – The Salzburg Card is most cost-effective if you squeeze as much into your sightseeing day as possible.

How I Saved Money with the Salzburg Card

I spent two days in Salzburg as part of an Interrail itinerary between Feldkirch and Brno in Czechia .

I bought the 48-hour Salzburg Card to visit Mozart’s Birthplace, the Mozart Residence, Salzburg Cathedral, St. Peter’s Abbey, the DomQuartier and Hohensalzburg Fortress. This saved me around €15.

Riding the Untersberg cable car and visiting Hellbrun would have resulted in further savings but I had been to these places on a previous city break to Salzburg.

Salzburg is the birthplace of W. A. Mozart. The narrow streets and wide squares of the old town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The world-famous Salzburg Festival, the magnificent panorama and numerous temptations at Christmas time make Salzburg an incomparable synthesis of the arts. Salzburg is unique. The harmonious interplay of landscape and architecture, art and culture as well as tradition and modernity in the smallest of spaces is what makes it so appealing.

Salzburg Card: Discount Card for Tourists

Like in many towns, several major tourist attractions of Salzburg have formed an association that issues a discount card : The so-called Salzburg Card . Tourists can buy this discount card to get free entrance or significant discounts at a wide range of sights and attractions. In addition, the Salzburg Card allows holders to use all public means of transport in Salzburg for free.

Sightseeing attractions that can be accessed for free include the big ones , such as the cable cars to the castle and Mount Untersberg ; entrance in most museums; cruises on the Salzach Schiff (river cruises in the city) and discounts in most theatres, concerts and day-trip destinations in the surroundings of Salzburg.

Visitors can buy the Salzburg Card at the airport , at almost all hotel receptions , at tourist information centres and ticket offices . Together with the Salzburg Card you get a brochure that will include a list of all attractions that are covered by the card. Note that every included sight can be visited only once.

How useful is the Salzburg Card really?

Now some honest piece of advice : The Salzburg Card is pretty expensive (see below), so it really depends on your sightseeing habits if it is a well-worth investment. If you are in Salzburg only for a day or so, you would probably go for the 24-hour Salzburg Card, which is the most expensive one. In this case, you will probably go to the castle, maybe one or two museums (such as Hellbrunn and the Salzburg Museum or the Residenz ) and otherwise, stroll around and enjoy the general beauty of the city.

In this case, you will be better off without the Salzburg Card by paying your entrance fees individually. Unless you hop on and off city busses, you won′t even need a day ticket for the public means of transport - single rides (under 2 Euros for one) will be cheaper. However, if you are staying for several days and want to do various museums and some touristy things such as the cruises, palaces and other attractions covered by the Salzburg Cards - and you need public transport, for example, because your hotel is not perfectly central - you might find the Salzburg Card a good deal.

The Salzburg Card is offered for 24, 48 and 72 hours. If you are in Salzburg for more than three days, we suggest you take the 48-hour version and spend the time from mid-day 1 to mid-day 3 with intense sightseeing. Fill the remaining time with "free" attractions, such as churches, monasteries and hikes on the hills of Salzburg.

Frequently Asked Questions by Travelers about the Salzburg Card

Most travelers heading to Salzburg for the first time have numerous questions pertaining to sightseeing and transport options when it comes to using the Salzburg Card.

Let me address the commonly raised concerns for you in my current blog, one by one.

Now that you have a rough idea about the card and its uses, let me elaborate more on the details pertaining to all of the questions stated above.

Salzburg Card

Since Salzburg is geographically located at the base of the magnificent Alps, the entire locale is enchanting. This holds true not just for first-time visitors but even travelers who have been here before. In addition to natural wonders like these, there are a number of monuments worth exploring in Salzburg. Purchasing a Salzburg card will make your explorations budget-friendly.

What Exactly is the Salzburg Card?

A Salzburg Card is basically a travel pass for the most popular sightseeing places around Salzburg.

It also covers numerous transport options.

Lastly, it provided discounts at a number of activities and events around the city.

Where to Buy an Authentic Salzburg Card?

Once you reach Salzburg, you can book your card online.

You are also free to pick it up from your hotel reception or at any tourist information office in and around the city of Salzburg.

Lastly, the card can also be bought at ticket bureaus or at the airport.

Remember that if you buy the card online, exchange your voucher for the actual card at the main tourist information office at Mozart Square in Old Town or at the main station.

What is the Validity of the Card?

The Salzburg Card is available in three variants 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours.

The number of hours here is calculated from the time of entry into the first attraction. So, for example, if you entered Mozart’s Residence at 11 am today, then your 24-hour Salzburg Card will expire on the next day at 11 am.

Therefore, the validity is not counted as per specific calendar days.

Salzburg Card

If you’re the kind of traveler who loves exploring on a minimal budget, do buy the Salzburg Card. Not only will it allow you to visit various places and use public transportation for free, but also save you the trouble of standing in long queues for hours.

What is the Cost of Buying the Card?

The price of the Salzburg Card depends on the season you are visiting.

Peak season is usually the summer and spring, and lean season refers to the winter season.

The price of the Salzburg Card is lower in winter when some of the Salzburg attractions are closed.

Peak Season: May-Oct

Peak season in Salzburg lasts from 1st May to 31st October. The price of the card is relatively high during this period.

Off Season:   Jan – April and Nov – Dec

Off-season in Salzburg lasts from 1st January to 30th October and from 1st November to 31st December. The price of the card is relatively cheaper during this period.

Salzburg Card

Although the best time to visit here in terms of weather is from September to October, December and January are great if you have a particular affinity with low temperatures and snowfall. Also, during this time, the Salzburg card is relatively cheaper.

Is the Salzburg Card Worth the Money Spent?

If you are travelling to Salzburg for the first time and you are keen to cover most of the city attractions, you should probably get the card. This is because most places you would like to visit will be covered by the card.

Make sure you don’t forget the guidebook and map that are given along with the Salzburg Card.

It will provide details of all the main attractions, and also give you an idea of the sequence in which you can cover them.

Salzburg Card

Salzburg is a beautiful city with a serene landscape, baroque-style buildings, cobbled streets and lovely people. Make every moment of yours in the city count. I wish you my best on your Salzburg trip. Visit this Austrian city to find a refreshed you.

Best Sightseeing Places in Salzburg

When you have the Salzburg Card with you, don’t resist all the exploration around the city. After all, it offers beautiful locales for you to visit and keep them in your memory forever.

Some of the most sought-after places in Salzburg that you most certainly should visit are mentioned below.

Mirabell Gardens

Situated in the epicentre of the town, Mirabell Gardens should be the first place to visit in Salzburg.

These gardens have a soul pleasing arrangement of a myriad of flower species in an ocean of colours.

Mirabell Palace

The picturesque Mirabell Gardens of Salzburg. The word ‘Mirabell’ is a compilation of two words from the Italian language – Mirabile meaning “admirable” and Bella meaning “beautiful.” These gardens are open throughout the week and entrance is free.

Mozart’s Residence

If you are in Salzburg, you have got to pay homage to the music maestro – Mozart. Therefore, visit his original residence. It’s just is a lane away from the Mirabell Garden.

Mozart’s residence has been converted into a museum. It displays all the relics used by the great Bard himself.

A little way down the road, you start hearing the sound of flowing water, gently caressing the rocks as it flows over them. This is when you know you’re close to the Makartsteg – the bridge of love.

The bridge on the river Salzach is lively with fresher air and pretty locks.

Linzergasse

This street is just a short walk from the lock bridge. It houses all the best eateries and shopping havens while decorated in Baroque architecture.

Also not to miss is Mozart’s birthplace (Geburtshaus) which is conspicuously located on this street – this house looks like sunflowers were let loose on this building to celebrate the birth of the Maestro.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

The Hohensalzburg Fortress has a view so pure, so untouched that you can’t help but want to stop time to admire it. The best part is that you get to reach here for that view in a funicular ride.

This place gives you a sense of serenity. A mild wind blowing, along with the view, is just the lullaby you need to teleport into a world with no problems.

Salzburg Card

Hohensalzburg Fortress has a view so beautiful that you can’t help but want to stop time to admire it. It is the largest fully-preserved castle in Central Europe, and that’s a matter of sheer pride for Austrians. You’ll see that this fort is a true eye-catcher.

Sound of Music Set Tour

A Salzburg trip cannot be deemed complete unless you take the Sound of Music tour. It will be once in a lifetime experience especially if you’re a fan of the classic movie.

On this tour, original shooting locations can be visited. The tour can be undertaken via bus, bicycle or even by foot.

Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus)

While the other sights and attractions are not very far from each other and can all be covered in a day, the Fuhrer’s ambitious holiday home would require half a day. Believe me, it is worth it.

Perched atop a rocky mountain, it is named befittingly. Tour buses are regularly available to take you to the elevator that then takes you upwards.

Salzburg is the place to be if you want the perfect blend of sightseeing and peace. The Salzburg Card will ensure the best possible use of your money. Go for it if you are in the city to explore.

Happy wayfaring 🙂

Beside the city of Salzburg, SalzburgerLand has a lot to offer, too. Enjoy its cultural highlights with jazz, classical music, theatre, literature and art.

Austria may not be a budget destination, but with some savvy planning there are many ways to make your euros go further © Patrick Daxenbichler / Getty Images

Despite its monarchically lavished cities, alpine villages at the foot of gondola-gliding peaks, and enchanting lakeside hangouts, you don’t need pockets as deep as an emperor to enjoy Austria .

Much like its Western European neighbours, Austria is a far stretch from being a shoestring destination. But public transportation is inexpensive, guest cards bundle together a staggering stack of discounts, you can wander the grounds of grandiose sites and climb every mountain without spending a cent, and street food balances out the splurge on schnitzel.

Here’s how to make your budget stretch further on your visit to Austria.

Daily costs

  • Dorm bed in a hostel: €30
  • Basic hotel room for two: €100
  • Daily travel card on public transport: €8
  • City card, 24 hours: €70
  • Museum entry: €15
  • Cup of coffee: €4.50
  • Three-course restaurant dinner for two: €80
  • A glass of Austrian wine: €4
  • A pint of beer at the bar: €4
  • Average daily cost: €150

Fly into Vienna for the best choice of budget air fares

While Salzburg , Innsbruck , Klagenfurt and Graz have airports, Vienna International Airport is Austria’s biggest, serving more flights from budget airlines such as Ryanair, Wizz Air and Eurowings.

Travel in the shoulder seasons for cheaper room rates

The winter ski season (December to April) and summer (June to August) are the busiest times to visit Austria. In the spring and autumn shoulder seasons (May, and September to November), you’ll be more likely to snag better-priced rooms, score tickets on popular transport routes and find fewer crowds to make the most of your time at museums and other major sights.

Book train tickets in advance to get around for less

The cheapest way to get around Austria is by purchasing advance train tickets. Save half or more on the cost of a standard ticket by booking a bargain fixed-departure-time Sparschiene ticket with national rail operator  ÖBB . But before you book, compare prices with private rail operator WESTbahn , which connects Vienna to Salzburg, Innsbruck and Bregenz with supersaver and flexible tickets. And, depending on your plans, consider whether a  Eurail Austria pass  – which starts at €144 for three days – might be more cost-effective.

Get a 24-hour pass for unlimited public transportation

In big cities, a single ride on public transport might cost as little as €2.40, but don’t pay as you go if you plan to travel several times over the course of a day; you’ll save money with a 24-hour pass, which costs less than €10.

Plan your days – a city tourist pass could save you money

Palaces, museum complexes and tempting day trips – traveling on a budget shouldn’t mean having to max out on one highlight per day. Depending on your plans, you could save money with city tourist passes in 24-, 48-, or 72-hour variations, which include public transportation and discounts for attractions.

The  Vienna City Card includes a 20% discount on participating hotels and restaurants.

You’ll get the Innsbruck Welcome Card with a stay of two nights at partner hotels and it includes weekly guided hiking and e-biking tours

The  Graz Card adds on free travel on the Schlossbergbahn and the Schlossberglift, as well as an old town tour.

The Linz Card grants free museum entry, a €10 voucher redeemable on concerts and river cruises and throws in a trundle on the mountain tramway Pöstlingbergbahn.

The Salzburg Card  represents the best value for money. It offers one night of accommodation and free admission to every city tourist attraction and museum that you can squeeze in.

Book at partner hotels with regional discount cards

If you're roaming a region you can look out for guest cards offering unlimited transport, entry discounts and access to outdoor activities.

If you book a room at a partner hotel in Tyrol , Vorarlberg,  Salzburgerland , Upper Austria and Burgenland and you’ll get a card for free at check-in.

In areas without partner hotel links you can buy regional money-saving cards, such as Carinthia ( Kärnten Card ), Styria ( Steiermark-Card ) and Lower Austria ( Niederösterreich-CARD ),

An elevated view over the carefully landscaped Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg, with the historic Hohensalzburg Fortress atop a hill in the background

Seek out attractions that cost nothing (nature is free)

UNESCO-protected old towns are open-air museums, and the landscaped gardens of opulent abodes – including those at Schönbrunn and Belvedere  in Vienna and Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg – are public-access enchantments. Beyond the gilded halls, several film and music events across the country don’t require a ticket, including Vienna’s Summer Night Concert in Schönbrunn Palace (June), the Vienna Film Festival (June to September) and Salzburg’s Mirabell Gardens Sunday Promenade Concerts  (May until August).

For the pinnacle of budget exploration, skip the cable car ticket and pick a hiking route for valley and vineyard highs. And if you don’t find yourself scrambling for a deck-side spot at one of Austria’s bathing lakes, swim in Vienna’s Alte Donau or Salzburg’s Almkanal, instead of pay-for-entry lidos.

Visit museums for free

Ticket costs to see Vienna’s assemblage of art and heritage quickly stack up, but more than one million objects are showcased for free at the Wien Museum Karlsplatz , giving you a taster of the city’s millennium of history. There’s also free admission every first Sunday of the month at Hermesvilla  (former escape of Empress Elisabeth, the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I) in the  Lainzer Tiergarten , the artifact-loaded Römermuseum (Roman Museum) and six houses that were once home to the composers Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, and Strauss.

Max out the value of your ticket on late-night open days – Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien and Leopold Museum are open until 9pm on Thursdays; the Naturhistorisches Museum until 8pm on Wednesdays; and Salzburg’s Museum der Moderne  stays open until 8pm on Thursdays.

Across Austria for one night in October, the Long Night of the Museums offers the chance to culture-cram as many museums as you like from 6pm until 1am for the cost of a single €15 ticket.

Look out for discounts for children, students and over-60s

From transport to theatre shows, museums to mountain lift passes, showing the relevant ID can get you free or discounted admission.

Join free walking tours and greeter programmes

Join walking tours with locals who will introduce you to their city on a “for-tips” basis. Vienna has nine free tours  to choose from. Check out the first free walking tour in Salzburg and Innsbruck’s greeter network . Or guide yourself through Austria's splendor with apps like GPSMYCITY , which currently covers 13 destinations in the country.

Eat breakfast at a bakery and not your hotel

Swap pricey continental breakfasts for bakeries with flavorful bread, pastries and coffee. Ströck, Anker, and Der Mann are fresh-out-of-the-oven chains, and neighborhoods are dotted with independent bake shops.

Scour supermarkets for end-of-day deals

Whether in a Dorf (village) or a Stadt (city), you'll find a supermarket like Billa, Spar, Hofer or MPREIS for a quick, on-the-road fill-up or a budget-friendly at-home feast. For farm-fresh produce, meander mouthwatering markets like Naschmarkt and Brunnenmarkt in Vienna, Kaiser Josef Markt in Graz, and the Market Hall in Innsbruck.

Download the Too Good to Go app and grab last-minute food bundles from grocery stores, supermarkets, bakeries and take-outs. Some generous goodie bags are under €5.

A group of three friends are standing beside a "Würstelstand" (sausage stand) in Vienna

Snack on street food

A rite of passage in Vienna, but found in other cities too, the typically late-night snack stop of a  Würstelstand (sausage stand), is where you can pick up a  Käsekrainer (a sausage stuffed with tiny cheese cubes)   and a beer for less than €10. Thanks to the multicultural crossover, kebab and shawarma vendors abound, as well as Balkan street food like the bosna (hot dog) and ćevapčići (grilled meat).

Bring a reusable water bottle

Stay hydrated with the purest water straight from the mountains. Vienna’s 1300 drinking fountains bring fresh mountain spring water from the Lower Austrian Styrian Alps to the streets, and 27 of Salzburg’s 49 water fountains flow with the mountain spring elixir dubbed the “ Untersberg Champagne .” All tap water in Austria is safe to drink, thanks to its alpine freshness. This is why the coffee and Spritzer (wine and sparking water) taste so good here.
