Jūrmala (pronounced yoor-muh-lah) is a long string of townships with Prussian-style villas, each unique in shape and decor. Even during the height of communism, Jūrmala was always a place to 'sea' and be seen. These days, on summer weekends, vehicles clog the roads when jetsetters and day-tripping Rīgans flock to the resort town for some serious fun in the sun.

If you’re spending a few days in Riga , then planning a day trip to Jurmala and nearby Kemeri is something that should be on every visitor’s itinerary. As one of the premier seaside destinations in Latvia, there are lots of things to do in Jurmala and Kemeri that make it worth spending a day (or more!) if your trip to Riga allows.

Located within easy reach of the Latvian capital, Jurmala has been famed for its beautiful beaches and spas for decades. In fact, it is an incredibly popular destination in its own right despite its proximity to Riga.

A little bit further to the west of Jurmala lies Kemeri National Park and the town of Kemeri. This town is well-known for its sulphuric waters and is home to a (now defunct) sanitorium. The National Park is set atop a bog that is absolutely fascinating to explore – provided you remember some insect repellent!

So if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of Riga, then follow this one-day itinerary and enjoy a little piece of the gorgeous Latvian coast.

Table of Contents

Getting to Jurmala & Kemeri from Riga

Getting to Jurmala and Kemeri is quite straightforward and you have the option to go by car, public transport or an organised tour.

By Organised Tour

If you’re really interested in visiting Kemeri National Park and don’t want to hire a car, the easiest way to do this is going to be by organised tour. There are plenty of tours to choose from that include guided walks along the Kemeri Bog Boardwalk and stops at the beautiful beaches of Jurmala.

For instance, this full-day tour will pick you up at your accommodation in Riga and take you to Kemeri Bog Boardwalk. After the walk, you’ll head to the beautiful Lake Kaņieris before heading to a beautiful beach.

Another great option is this small-group tour which also includes stops at the Kemeri Bog, Kemeri Town, Lake Kaņieris, and in Jurmala itself.

And if you’d like to have a guide all to yourself, consider booking this private tour which will take you to the same places as the other tours. Your guide will explain the history of the bog, the native flora, and give you some insight into Kemeri town and Jurmala, as well.

For a unique experience, this sunrise tour of Kemeri could be a good option. Keep in mind that, if you decide to go on this tour in the summer, the start time will be at about 3:30am as Latvia is located so far north geographically.

View of Kemeri National Park

If you want to travel independently, see as much of the area as possible and have limited inconveniences, then visiting Jurmala and Kemeri by car is going to be the easiest option.

Driving out to this area is quick and easy and will give you the most flexibility to do and see what you want on your own timetable. Going by car is also the easiest way to get from Riga to Kemeri National Park if you don’t want to go on an organised tour.

The drive from central Riga to the Kemeri bog walk trailhead is about one hour. Unlike if you take public transit, you can drive and park directly at the trailhead, knocking about four kilometres off of your total walk. Keep in mind that the car park has a €2 (cash only) fee.

From the bog walk, you can drive to the town of Kemeri in about ten minutes where there is ample free parking. Once you enter the major Jurmala area, you will need to pay a €3 fee.

After that, you can park in public areas at no additional cost. The easiest way to pay this fee is through the EuroPark app, where you can enter your license information and the fee is tied to that. You can also pay the fee in advance through the Visit Jurmala website .

If you’ve decided that hiring a car is the route for you, then we suggest browsing Rentalcars.com to find great deals across several major and local car hire companies.

Majori Beach in Jurmala

One of the quickest and easiest ways to reach Jurmala and the town of Kemeri is by train.

Trains to Jurmala leave from Riga’s central station every thirty minutes or so and if you plan to only visit the seaside area of Dubulti or Majori, the train journey will only take about half an hour. You can purchase tickets at the station and the journey is quite affordable.

If you want to go all the way to Kemeri, then you can also opt to take the train. Trains from Riga Central Station to Kemeri leave about every hour and will take about an hour to get there. Keep in mind that, if you’re planning on doing the Kemeri Bog Walk, there isn’t an easy public transit method that will take you to the trailhead.

The trailhead (you can put “ start of the Kemeri bog walk ” into Google maps to direct you there) is about four kilometres from the Kemeri train station and it will take about forty minutes to walk there.

Alternatively, it may be possible to arrange a taxi or Bolt that will take you to the trailhead, however, you may struggle to find a ride that will take you back to the town.

It is also easy to hop on a train from Kemeri back to Jurmala (for this itinerary, get off at either Dubulti or Majori station) and that will only take about thirty minutes.

Kemeri Bog Walk

Though the train is the most comfortable and the preferred method of reaching Jurmala and Kemeri, it is also possible to take a minibus to Jurmala. From Riga’s Central Bus Station, you can grab a minibus to Majori or Dubulti about once every hour. The journey time will take about forty minutes.

To get to Kemeri, buses leave a little less frequently, however, in the morning, they leave every hour or so from the central bus station. Keep in mind that buses don’t terminate in Kemeri, so make sure you pay attention to the stops along the route.

Things To Do In Jurmala & Kemeri: A One-Day Itinerary

The itinerary listed below can easily be executed in one day, however, it is easiest if you do have your own car. It is possible to do it by public transport, just note that it may make for a long day.

Kemeri Bog Walk

Begin your Jurmala day trip at one of the highlights (in my opinion, at least) of the area – Kemeri National Park and, more specifically, the Kemeri Bog Walk.

As mentioned in the “Getting to” section above, to get to the trailhead, simply enter “ start of the Kemeri bog walk ” into your GPS and you will be directed to the car park.

The trail is incredibly well marked and there is a short dirt trail (there are also outhouse-style toilets at the beginning of the trailhead) before you will arrive at the boardwalk and the beginning of the bog walk.

There are two options when it comes to doing the walk – the first is a 1.5km loop that will only take you to the beginning of the ponds and really boggy area. The second is a 3.5km loop that winds you all along the bog on a well-maintained boardwalk. I would recommend the longer loop if you would like to get the best experience of the bog.

There are plenty of benches and places to stop off and relax along the trail. There is also an observation tower that you can climb to gain excellent views over the bog. The trail is also lined with plenty of plaques (written in both Latvian and English) that explain some of the history of the bog along with the interesting flora and fauna that can be found here.

Plan for the 3.5km walk to take about an hour – especially if you make multiple stops.

Benches in Kemeri National Park

Kemeri Town

After enjoying the peaceful nature of Kemeri National Park, it’s time to head over to the town of Kemeri itself. This small town on the western edge of Jurmala was once a famous spa destination and you can even visit a (now closed) Kemeri sanatorium dating back to the early 20th Century.

Kemeri sits up geothermal, sulphuric waters that run from the bog. You can actually wander through the lovely park in the centre of the town to a tap, where it is popular to bathe or rinse in smelly water.

The park also boasts a beautiful gazebo (known as the Islet of Love) and plenty of peaceful walking paths. You can also view the Kemeri Water Tower and, should you wish, pay the fee to climb to the top.

Kemeri Sanatorium

Dubulti Beach

From Kemeri, it’s time to head to Jurmala proper and one of the most popular areas to visit here is Dubulti. Located to the west of the most popular and lively beach of Majori, Dubulti is a good place to explore for something a little bit more laid back.

Obviously, the main draw of this area is the expansive, white sand beach. Like most beaches in the Baltic states, the sand is incredibly fine and the water is quite shallow.

If you want to go for a swim, you may have to walk out for 100 metres or more before you’re able to fully submerge yourselves. Because of how shallow and calm the water is, these beaches are very popular with families with younger children.

The beaches of Jurmala have plenty of changing areas and Dubulti is no different. You will also find volleyball areas and a few cafes where you can get a drink and some snacks.

There is also a boardwalk that you can stroll along to the other beaches of Jurmala, including Vaivari to the west and Majori, Dzintari and Bulduri to the east.

If you’re looking for a place to have a good lunch, then consider heading away from the beach to Kinza House , an excellent Georgian restaurant serving up favourites from this beautiful Caucasian country.

Church in Dubulti

Majori Beach

While Dubulti is perfect for those looking for a laid-back beach to relax on, no Jurmala day trip would be complete without visiting Majori – the main neighbourhood in Jurmala.

Majori is home to, obviously, a beautiful beach where you can also take a photo with the “Jurmala” sign. While in Majori, make sure to find the massive turtle statue, as well.

This is also where the majority of the big hotels and spas are located and there are quite a few restaurants and bars to visit. Majori is more of a “proper town” rather than a sleepy seaside suburb that you are more likely to find in the other Jurmala neighbourhoods.

Take the time to enjoy the delightful white sand beach, but make sure you go for a stroll in the town itself. There are plenty of beautiful, traditional houses to take in and a great seaside vibe to enjoy.

Boardwalk on Majori Beach

This 2-kilometre-long pedestrian street winds its way from the centre of Majori all the way to the neighbourhood of Dzintari.

Jomas Iela is a lively thoroughfare that is lined with countless bars, shops, restaurants and hotels and is really the main artery in Jurmala.

Make sure to take the time to stroll down this pedestrian street, stop at some of the souvenir stands, grab a drink somewhere and just enjoy the energy of this lovely street. Walking down Jomas Iela is absolutely one of the best things to do in Jurmala.

Juras Iela

Our Lady of Kazan Church

At the end of Jomas Iela lies a beautiful orthodox church known as the Our Lady of Kazan Church. Especially for those who are not from countries where Eastern Orthodox is a dominant religion, this church will be striking to see.

Complete with beautiful colours, numerous onion domes and a cacophonous bell symphony on the hour, this church is very much worth seeing.

Our Lady of Kazan Church

Dzintari Forest Park

If you didn’t get your fill of forest scenery while on the Kemeri Bog Walk (or you have decided to forgo that particular part of this day trip), make the final stop on this Jurmala day trip be the Dzintari Forest Park.

This is a vast park lined with pathways and tranquil forest vibes that is the perfect place to relax away from the sun and sand of the beach. It is also one of the main attractions in Jurmala.

Where to Stay in Jurmala

If you’ve determined that you’d rather have more than a day in Jurmala, then there are plenty of accommodation options in this seaside area of Latvia. Ranging from swish hotels to comfortable apartments, you’re sure to find something that suits.

Kurshi Hotel & Spa – This hotel is an excellent choice for those looking for a comfortable but affordable place to stay in Jurmala. They have a range of clean and modern rooms available, a location within a few minutes walking from the beach and a lovely spa to relax in should you choose.

Hotel Jurmala Spa – One of the most popular Jurmala hotels, this is a great luxury option if you really want to take advantage of this famed spa destination. They have several rooms on offer, a full-service spa on-site and a great bar and restaurant on site.

Greenhouse Apartments – If you’d like to have your own place to stay in Jurmala, then this studio apartment can be a great option. Located within easy walking distance from the beach, this place is perfect for couples looking for a comfortable stay in Jurmala.

Jūrmala of Latvia

Jūrmala, Latvia: What to See, Where to Go, What to Know

Jūrmala is a peninsula between a famous wide sandy beach of the Riga Gulf and Lielupe river. It was the popularity of this location for summertime rest which transformed former fishing villages into a swimming resort over 100 years ago. Boulevards were laid and picturesque wooden towered villas constructed to become summer residences of Riga’s rich.

A former spa in Jūrmala beach

A lot has changed, and the calm “elite seaside rest” of the old times has been joined by the mass chill of gigs and nightclubs in summer, while the buildings once built by German nobility and businessmen were supplemented with apartment blocks for the new Latvian and Russian middle class.

However, Jūrmala is simply massive, spanning some 20 km of prime Latvian seaside. This means that there is a Jūrmala for everybody: it still possible to find both an atmosphere of 19th century resort and the one of 21st century Riga suburb.

People enjoying summer in a main street of Majori village

Majori village is the heart of Jūrmala, its Jomas street the main street for shopping and expensive restaurants, while Turaidas street the main sea access route, famous for interwar concert hall that still hosts the Jūrmala’s best events. Many other key pre-WW2 buildings are also located here.

Eastern villages of Dzintari and Bulduri are calmer, their pretty historical edifices and some modern buildings lining the boulevards that run parallel to the sea. The number of restaurants and hotels is more limited. Some half of the area is left as pristine forests, giving the feeling of a forest city. In the east Jūrmala is limited by the mouths of Lielupe.

Western villages of Pumpuri and Melluži seem to be like a mirror image of Dzintari and Bulduri, although they have less historic buildings and less greenery.

Main Jomas street out of season

As the Latvian climate can be chilling in winter, the holiday season of Jūrmala is effectively summer-only (May-to-September with a noticeable July-August peak). However, Jūrmala still has much more activities in winter than any other Latvian city of comparable size. Some restaurants remain open year-round and gigs are offered. There is also a year-round indoor water theme park.

Moreover, Jūrmala has effectively became a suburb of Riga, its homes inhabited year-round by people who commute every day by a 25 km long 6 lane highway (interestingly, from Eastern Jūrmala Riga downtown is closer than the other end of Jūrmala itself). The popularity among the rich has rejuvenated Majori and the seaside, but numerous old wooden villas further on are now abandoned.

Train stattion near Lielupe in Majori

Public transport access is easy from Riga, with nearly every of Jūrmala’s villages having its own station for frequent Riga-bound trains. The railway spans the entire city, together with its main street that is used for driving.

Downtown Jūrmala (Majori and Dubulti)

Pedestrianized Jomas street is Majori’s main artery, famous for its upscale restaurants and shopping. In summers it is full of holidaymakers. Jomas street connects the Majori train station to Turaidas street.

Main Jomas street

At the station square stands the famous towered Majori hotel (now closed).

Turaidas street is the Jūrmala’s main gala beach access route. It has numerous elaborate historic hotels and the famous Dzintari concert hall . Built in 1938 it has remained the heart of Jūrmala’s cultural life ever since, offering regular summer gigs and some winter events. The old wooden building has been extended by an open-air “summer estrada” in the Soviet occupation era. On the corner of Turaidas and Jomas streets, a Russian Orthodox church destroyed by the Soviets in the 1960s is being reconstructed (in a different style).

Dzintari Concert Hall

Out of all parts of Jūrmala, Majori is the one most closely intertwined to the sea. Some of its buildings have been constructed right on the beach , serving as hotels and restaurants. That is something extremely rare in the Baltic region. Marienbade spa (constructed 1870 at the narrowest point of “Jūrmala peninsula”) was among the area’s first tourist buildings that have effectivelly launched Jūrmala as a seaside destination. However, it was partly rebuilt by the Soviets. Another, more authentic wooden spa stands where Pilsonu street meets the sea.

Old villa at Majori

Like in the rest of Jūrmala, the through traffic largely uses a wide avenue further from the sea. Alongside this road one may find two museums. The Jūrmala city museum is free and offers a nice selection of memorabilia from the era the resort was born and developed. Another museum is dedicated to Aspazija , who was a famous Jūrmala-born interwar poetess.

Aspazija museum in Dubulti

Jūrmala Downtown also has the city hall (a boring Soviet building) and Latvian president’s summer residence (invisible to passers-by).

A diorama of beachgoers in Jūrmala museum

Being the downtown, Majori has also expanded south of the railroad . These areas are less impressive and more derelict however, as they are further from the sea and thus have fewer tourism opportunities. Even the old Majori manor is now abandoned.

Eastern Jūrmala (Dzintari and Bulduri)

Historic brick villa

Both districts have been developed in the early 20th century. With seaside holidays getting more popular, more and more Rigans sought to have a summer residence in Jūrmala. Thus, the regular grid of Dzintari (then known as Edinburgh) and Bulduri boulevards was laid.

A villa in Bulduri

The area is vast, spanning 6 km from its east end at Lielupe mouths forests to the west end at Majori (Jūrmala downtown). A walk to traverse the entire Dzintari and Bulduri would be long, and bike may be preferable.

There are few actual wonders, but most of many turn-of-the-century towered wooden villas are interesting to look at. There are also restaurants and shops, although they are relatively few and far between. Bulduri is the newer and more regular of the two eastern areas. Two parallel boulevards there are bisected by numbered streets. At the time no new community (even that of summer homes) would have been imagined without a church, so a small but lovely Bulduri Lutheran church has been built in 1889.

Bulduri Lutheran church, surrounded by a forest park

Still, many pre-WW1 buildings remain even there, while pristine lands are not built up. One example is the Dzintari forest park , which has an observation tower offering very green vistas. In fact, Jūrmala city is almost invisible from there, so small are the buildings and so dense are the high surrounding trees.

Dzintari as it is visible from the observation tower

Less impressively, some abandoned large Soviet spas and hotels stand amidst these natural areas. Even the ones that are still used arguably ruin the landscape with their megalomaniac forms.

Soviet sanitarium Belarus, one of the renovated ones

Southern Bulduri is the main access point of Jūrmala as cars and trains arrive from Riga across two bridges. A rest area that includes a major indoor water theme park as well as gas station and a supermarket serves the arriving visitors near the car bridge.

Indoor water theme park in Jūrmala

The area is served by train stops (from east to west) Lielupe, Bulduri and Dzintari. Lielupe train stop is actually located in southern Bulduri as the mouths of Lielupe area lack a railroad.

Western Jūrmala (Pumpuri and Melluži)

In Jaundubulti and Pumpuri, the main street becomes a boulevard with buildings and a park in-between.

One side of the Western Jūrmala boulevard, with the other side beyond the home pictured

Western Jūrmala has a multitude of historic buildings, although the most impressive ones stand elsewhere. Many of the homes here are new, built during the Soviet occupation or by the modern elite.

The beaches there are emptier. They lack the Blue flag status but are nonetheless clean and sandy.

Western Jūrmala beach

Ķemeri spa resort

While the legend of Ķemeri may have appeared back then, it was in the interwar period when the town reached its zenith. One of the Latvia’s top interwar projects – the Ķemeri spa alongside a massive park – has been constructed here.

Ķemeri spa

Getting to and around Jūrmala

An alternative is going to Jūrmala the traditional way – by train . It takes from 20 to 40 minutes from Riga depending on at which of many Jūrmala train stops you will exit. While the trains stop at every station, some of them turn around earlier than the Western reaches of Jūrmala so if you go somewhere beyond the center see if your train goes there. The trains are fequent (at least 1 in 30 minutes ar Central Jūrmala, save for nights) and may also be used for local transportation. However, vans also traverse Jūrmala.

=

Jūrmala is narrow, so basically everything revolves around rail and the main street. However, Jūrmala is unusually long for a city with size, a whooping 31 km in length, making walking and even biking often impractical (if the goal is beyond district). Bike rent , is, however, readily available.

E.g. distance from Majori to Ķemeri spa is 21 km, and from Majori to the skansen at Lielupe – 9 km.

Cinevilla movie studio

The original “Cinevilla town” is a collection of World War 1 era building facades, bridges over “Daugava river” (actually a grassland), old trains and cobbled streets. Everything was built to film “Defenders of Riga” (2007), the most expensive Latvian movie ever.

Old Latvian street in Cinevilla

After filming ended the area opened as a kind of laid-back theme park with temporary art exhibits, a cafe and various additional forms of pre-ordered entertainment among the fake buildings.

Furthermore, Cinevilla is continuously expanded as props for new Latvian films are being built. More often than not these “props” are actually real buildings, built with the intention to be reused as wedding halls, hotels and otherwise.

History of Jūrmala

Jūrmala, the riga’s seaside (1870-1918).

=

All that changed after the railway line from Riga to Tukums was completed in 1877. Each village received its own station where every warm summer day many holidaymakers from Riga would disembark, heading for the beaches. The villages closer to Riga then became known as “Rigas Jūrmala”, which means “Riga’s Seaside” in Latvian.

=

First major seaside buildings for tourists have been built, such as the Marienbade spa. The atmosphere of Jūrmala was more conservative then, with men and women swimming at separate hours until the 1890s, when the town became the first in Russian Empire to end segregated swimming.

=

Jūrmala expanded swiftly, with new straight streets laid amidst trees, all lined up by impressively decorated towered villas (mostly wooden) owned by the Riga’s elite (mainly ethnic Germans) as their “summer homes”. Small churches of various denominations, hotels, and restaurants were also built to cater for the tourists. The number of local inhabitants increased rapidly from 2000 in 1897 to 11000 in 1925.

=

Jūrmala, the Interwar Latvia’s top resort (1918-1940)

After Latvia became independent in 1918 Jūrmala became its top resort. The government attempted to promote the area abroad as the “Baltic Riviera” with some success.

=

Ķemeri received a massive spa, one of the biggest interwar Latvia’s building projects. Dzintari concert hall has been built in 1936, becoming the hub of summer concerts ever since. Latvian names have been adopted for resorts that had German ones: Edinburg became Dzintari, Karlsbade became Melluži.

=

The population stood at 13000 in 1935 and 86% were ethnic Latvians.

Jūrmala, the Soviet Union’s Baltic Riviera (1940-1990)

People rushing for a reopened Riga-Jūrmala train line in the 1950s

In 1959 the string of “villages” (including Ķemeri) was officially unified as Jūrmala city, becoming the Baltic Sea’s largest resort. “Riga” was dropped from its name, as the “Seaside” was not just Riga’s, but also entire Latvia’s or even Soviet Union’s. Despite its size, Soviet Union lacked year-round tropical resorts, so Jūrmala, imbibed in a more Western-feeling Latvian culture, became popular among Russians and Belarusians as well (260000 spent their holidays there in 1980). The local population was exploding as the Soviet Union would send in thousands of mostly Russian permanent inhabitants. Jūrmala had 14000 people in 1935, 38000 in 1959, 61000 in 1989. Latvian share declined from 86% in 1939 to 44% by 1989, nearly surpassed by Russians (42%).

=

Modern Jūrmala in free Latvia (1990-)

After Latvia restored its independence in 1990 the economic transition back to capitalism has changed the face of Jūrmala once again. New small private hotels and restaurants sprung up, often outcompeting the massive Soviet edifices, which in turn became abandoned. Tourism from the East declined both due to a difficult economic situation there and the visa regime. At the same time, Latvians were now allowed to spend holidays abroad – and the warm climate of Egypt or Turkey made it easy for these destinations to outcompete Jūrmala.

By the 2000s, however, Jūrmala regained some of what it had lost. While Latvians would continue to spend their holiday weeks abroad, many would visit Jūrmala on summer weekends. Tourists from ex-Soviet countries slowly returned, driven both by nostalgia, few cultural/linguistic barriers (Russian is still the most common second language) and Latvia’s economic miracle that made Jūrmala feel more advanced than whatever was available in Russia or Ukraine. In order to attract “Eastern tourists”, Jūrmala also hosted regular events such as the “New Wave” Russian pop music festival (2001-2014). In 2006 the city attracted 125000 longer-term holidaymakers.

=

After Latvia joined the European Union in 2004 it began giving right of abode to everybody who owned an expensive real estate in Latvia. As the right of abode automatically allowed visa-free travel within the European Union, many rich Russians used up the opportunity to buy second homes in Jūrmala, thereby gaining both a place for summer vacations and a right to freely travel to Europe. This practice encouraged construction boom in Jūrmala and real estate prices skyrocketed.

Moreover, it offers relaxing spa experiences , opportunities for outdoor activities in the lush pine forests, and a vibrant cultural scene with art galleries and summer festivals .

However, what’s the most special part about Jurmala is the town’s unique charm which lies in its well-preserved wooden architecture from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

There are many awesome things to see and do on a day in Jurmala and in this blog post, I’m sharing the best ones you shouldn’t miss. And, of course, the most important thing: How to reach Jurmala !

(This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a certain percentage of a sale if you purchase after clicking.)

How to Get to Jurmala, Latvia

To reach Jurmala, you have several options to choose from.

Visit Jurmala by Train

Taking the train is one of the most convenient and cheapest ways to get to Jurmala from Riga. The train departs from Riga Central Station, and there are regular services throughout the day .

The journey usually takes around 30-40 minutes , and the train stations in Jurmala are conveniently located near the city center, especially if you get off at Majori Station.

I also took the train and found the journey to be quite relaxing and I loved watching the Latvian landscape pass by !

TIP : Use Omio to find the best connections from Riga to Jurmala.

Visit Jurmala by Bus

Another option is to use the public bus service. Riga and Jurmala are well-connected by bus routes, and there are various bus stops throughout the city where you can catch a bus to Jurmala.

The journey typically takes around 40-50 minutes , depending on traffic conditions. While it may take slightly longer than the train, buses offer more flexibility in terms of departure points and timings.

So if you’re not staying close to the central train station, you might want to check out the bus schedule!

Other Transport Options

If you prefer the freedom and flexibility of traveling by car , renting one is a good choice. The drive from Riga to Jurmala is straightforward and takes approximately 30 minutes , depending on traffic.

You can follow the A10 highway , which is well-maintained and signposted, making it easy to find your way to the resort city. Keep in mind that parking might be limited , especially during peak tourist seasons.

For the more adventurous and eco-conscious travelers, biking to Jurmala can be a fun experience! Dedicated bike paths connect Riga to Jurmala, offering scenic views of the Latvian countryside and the beach.

The journey may take around 1.5-2 hours , depending on your cycling pace and starting point in Riga.

Last but not least, if you want you can also take a guided half-day tour to Jurmala which already includes transportation.

Top 5 Best Things to See & Do in Jurmala

As already mentioned, there’s a lot to do in Jurmala. To avoid putting too much on your agenda and possibly even getting stressed out as a result, I put together a list of the top 5 things to see & do.

These things guarantee that you’ll get the full experience without rushing from one spot to another.

1. Jurmala Beach

Probably the most famous part of Jurmala is its beach, which stretches along the Gulf of Riga for about 33 kilometers, making it one of the longest beaches in Northern Europe .

The most popular area at Jurmala Beach is the central part, which is often referred to as the “Majori Beach.” There you can bask in the sun, swim in the refreshing waters of the Baltic Sea, or take long leisurely walks along the shoreline

Things to do in Riga

If you’re seeking more adventurous activities , Majori Beach offers opportunities for water sports. Jet skiing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding are popular options, and equipment rentals are available along the beach.

If you decided to stay in Jurmala until the evening, don’t miss the opportunity to witness the breathtaking Baltic sunset from Majori Beach ! it’s one of the best in all of Latvia!

2. Jomas Street

Not only is a section of Jurmala Beach named Majori, but the entire neighborhood. Of course, the main attraction of Majori is its stunning sandy beach, but there is one part of the area that is just as worthy of being seen !

Jomas Street is the vibrant and lively heart of Majori. This pedestrian street stretches for about 1.3 kilometers and is a must-visit destination for tourists and locals alike.

The street has a long history dating back to the 19th century when it served as a connecting route between the train station and the beach.

Jomas Street in Majori

Thanks to its cobblestone pavement and colorful wooden buildings it kept its enchanting and nostalgic atmosphere.

Jomas Street is also a culinary paradise , offering a wide array of cafes, restaurants, and other eateries. From traditional Latvian cuisine to international flavors, you can savor a diverse range of dishes while enjoying the picturesque surroundings.

One place I can recommend is Cafe 53 . I tried their Lobio , a traditional Georgian bean stew and it was absolutely delicious! Plus the prices are very fair .

Make sure to check out the many charming boutiques and shops selling souvenirs, unique gifts, and local handicrafts.

3. Our Lady of Kazan Church

At the end of Jomas Street, you can find a beautiful Orthodox church called Our Lady of Kazan Church. For people who are not used to seeing Orthodox churches, this one will be especially striking .

The church is very beautiful with lots of bright colors , tall onion-shaped domes on top, and bells that play a lovely melody every hour. It was constructed in 2010 and is therefore a rather new addition to the city’s architectural landscape.

Despite its recent construction, the church follows traditional Russian Orthodox design principles , reflecting the influence of the religion in this area.

Our Lady of Kazan Church

Although it’s most striking from the outside, it’s worth going inside as well. The interior is adorned with religious pictures, murals showing biblical scenes , and fancy decorations that make the place look very grand.

4. Historic Wooden Houses

Another thing you’ll find in Jurmala is a great number of historic wooden houses that add to the neighborhood’s unique charm and character .

These well-preserved architectural gems date back to the 19th century when Jurmala was a popular resort destination – which, of course, it is still today.

Many of them feature intricate woodwork , decorative carvings, and colorful facades , making each house a unique and captivating piece of art.

Simply take a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood and enjoy the sight of the charming old wooden houses along the way!

Jurmala Wooden Houses

5. Dzintari Forest Park

Last but not least, plan a short visit to Dzintari Forest Park, a lush green space that offers a refreshing getaway in nature. The park has well-marked walking paths , perfect for leisurely strolls and enjoyable hikes.

One of the park’s highlights is its rich variety of plants and animals , providing a home to various bird species and wildlife.

Throughout the park, you’ll find charming spots for picnics , cozy benches, and open areas to relax, read, or simply enjoy the serene surroundings.

If you prefer to be more active, the park provides many opportunities for cycling and jogging along designated paths.

It’s a wrap!

As you see, Jurmala is truly a place worth seeing and undoubtedly the perfect address if you want to escape city life and spend a relaxing day at the beach or in nature .

Like it? Pin it!

What makes J ūrmala’s 25.6-kilometre -long beach unique is not only its fine, sugar-like white quartz sand, but also its spacio-usness. In the city centre, the sandy area measures from 25 to 50 metres wide from the water to the first line of dunes. This means plenty of sun and sea, and plenty of room for everyone. The nearby pines provide shade and natural aromatherapy for sunbathers, and the comparatively low salinity (5.5 per mille, or 0.55%) of the Baltic Sea decreases their need to search for for a shower after every swim. The water becomes deeper very gradually and evenly, almost meditatively, allowing one to wade towards the horizon for almost a hundred metres in some places...to the accompaniment of splashing footsteps and the mild breeze.

A bird flying in the sky.

We had some ideas of what we wanted to see in Latvia, but we were not sure how. We were lucky to have the chance to see some off-the-beaten path spots near the Jūrmala resort town on the Latvian coast, with a guided tour!

Interesting places to see in Latvia

It can be a little overwhelming to get to a new country, settle down for a few days in the biggest city and then figure out what more you can see. For us, we had some ideas of what we wanted to see in Latvia, but we were not sure how. A guided tour with Traveller Tours brought us to some spots that surprised us, and they were all pretty close to Riga.

Jūrmala and hidden local spots

From Riga, the coastal town of Jūrmala is well-known, and not far at all. It’s 23 miles (38 km) from the city! We could have visited on our own, going by train, minibus or taxi, but we put these ideas on the back burner until we found the Exploring the Jurmala Hidden Wonders Tour . This day trip with a local guide shows visitors to places in addition to Jūrmala itself. We weren’t familiar with any of the places on the itinerary, but we set out for a day of adventure!

We met up with Anna, our local Latvian guide, in the Riga downtown area and left for a drive to the coastal region. Our first stop was through a wooded back road that led to the shores of a river. Anna said we were going to a giant sand dune. A sand dune? In Latvia?

Climbing the Priedaines Baltā Kāpa (White Dune)

Sure enough, after walking along a path, we saw a huge white sand dune, the Priedaines Baltā Kāpa (White Dune). Did you know that “balta” means white in Latvian?

Two girls surfing down a big white sand dune

We all climbed the sand dune, which is so interestingly located right next to the forest that covers so much of Latvia, and we had to climb with both our hands and feet because it was so steep. This was a cool natural landmark to see, and we had no idea that it existed.

Fisherman homes at Jurmala Open Air Museum

Next, we took a short drive to the Jurmala Open Air Museum, which is like a peek into old fisherman houses from the past. The fisherman livelihood is a significant part of Latvian heritage and culture, so we were glad to have a glimpse into this side of Latvia’s coastal region.

Historic wooden interior of a Latvian log home

Jūrmala’s historic wooden homes

Our third stop was the Jūrmala town itself, which is home to many beautiful wooden Victorian-era homes. These quaint houses came to be during the mid-nineteenth century, when people from across the Baltic region started coming to Jūrmala to spend their summer vacations.

Historic wooden Victorian home with a large tree

The collection of homes is recognized as a heritage site and serve as the main attraction of Jūrmala in addition to its beach. No visit to Jūrmala would be complete without a stroll on the commercial strip of Jomas Street, so we made sure to take a walk there and see what it was all about.

Latvian brass band playing in a gazebo

A Soviet sanatorium?

Our tour went further into the off-the-beaten track locations that we never could have found on our own. We stopped by the semi-deserted former sanatorium (and now rehabilitation facility) complex called Jantarnij Bereg, which was like a blast to a rather-Soviet past.

Soviet style building with rows of windows

The building is straight out of the 1960s and felt like a movie set. We took a walk through a small forest area to the water, which Anna said used to be fenced off so that people could not escape the Soviet Union to Scandinavia.

Beach scene near Jurmala Latvia

For lunch, we went back to the beach area to eat at an authentic Latvian restaurant called Kūriņš, where we had Latvian food like skewered chicken shashlik, which is served with pickles (yum!), boiled potatoes and crinkle cut fries.

Wooden interior of a Latvian family restaurant

A sulfuric stroll

The other semi-deserted location that we visited was the holy sulfide springs at Kemeri Park and the Mīlestības saliņa, or ‘Island of Love.’

In this quiet park, there were some deserted buildings having to do with the springs. We climbed up the spiral staircase (be careful - no banister to hold on to!) to the roof of the pavilion.

Historic stone tower in a park

Bog walking in Ķemeri National Park

Our favorite part of the day was taking a relaxing walk through the forest and bogs in the Ķemeri National Park. This was a pretty flat hike, through a forest first, and then through bog and swampland. It was surprising that the colors were so pretty and varied.

Mini ice cream cones for sale at a food truck

We walked for a while over a small boardwalk that goes over the marshy land. The grand finale was the viewpoint platform, three stories up (note: this viewpoint is part of the longer route around the national park and may not be a part of all tours, depending on time).

This was a memorable day for us spent in these diverse locations, all not too far from Riga, but seemingly, worlds away. To book this tour, visit Traveller Tours and check availability first!
